  1. Well, good morning, church family.

  2. This is Pastor Sam checking in with you from vacation.

  3. My family and I very much look forward to being back with you next Sunday worshiping

  4. together.

  5. But until then, let me introduce to you a very special guest.

  6. Ed Upton is the Senior Director of the Church Ambassador Network of Texas.

  7. He is an elder at Redemption City Church in Fort Worth.

  8. He's also served as Vice President at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth.

  9. He has served on the staff of the Executive Committee of our Southern Baptist Convention.

  10. He has served on the staff of two of our largest SBC churches, Cross Church in Arkansas

  11. under Pastor Ronnie Floyd, as well as Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas.

  12. Ed pastored in a smaller town, Neosho, Missouri.

  13. He holds his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southern Seminary in

  14. Louisville, Kentucky.

  15. Ed is a man of the church.

  16. He's a man of God, and he's one of my closest friends on this earth, one of my favorite people.

  17. I believe his family is here with him today.

  18. I hope he's a blessing to y'all.

  19. I know he will be.

  20. Please welcome my friend, Ed Upton.

  21. What a sweet boy.

  22. How we doing?

  23. We good?

  24. He's a liar.

  25. He was not filming that on vacation.

  26. That was in his office.

  27. So we're going to talk to him about that when he gets home, okay?

  28. My goodness gracious.

  29. Are we good?

  30. I need to know, before we start, I need to know how responsive y'all are, because I got

  31. some questions about the sermon, and I want y'all to, will y'all speak back to me if I

  32. ask you questions?

  33. This is yes.

  34. This is yes.

  35. Okay, cool.

  36. All right.

  37. Just making sure.

  38. It's a privilege to be here.

  39. I bring you greetings from Fort Worth.

  40. I bring you greetings from Redemption City Church, which is a church plant that Sam and

  41. Holly helped us plant a few years ago in Fort Worth.

  42. And that we still, we consider First Baptist Henry at a great partner with us in the gospel

  43. work that's going on all across North Texas.

  44. I have known Sam for a few years.

  45. Like he said, we worked together.

  46. And Sam and Holly, I think Eleanor and I would tell you, are some of our closest friends.

  47. And so it is an honor to be here with you.

  48. I like to think that everything good that Sam knows about the church, I taught him.

  49. All the bad, I'm sure he learned somewhere else.

  50. But it wasn't for me.

  51. So you're going to find that out today, hopefully.

  52. So grab your Bibles.

  53. Turn with me to John chapter number 21.

  54. So if you brought a copy, it's a paper Bible.

  55. I've got a paper Bible.

  56. If you got it on your phone, you're not going to bother me if you get your phone out.

  57. John, you're going to bother me if you're scrolling on Facebook, but you're not going

  58. to bother me if you get your phone out and look at scripture.

  59. John chapter number 21 is where we're going to be today.

  60. And while you're turning there, I want to tell you a story.

  61. You guys like stories?

  62. I'll tell you a little bit of a story.

  63. The year 1514, so going way back.

  64. In the year 1514, a middle class farming family in southern Scotland named Knox welcomed a

  65. new baby into their family, a little boy that they named John.

  66. John Knox grew up and when it was time to go off to college, although his family wasn't

  67. super well off, they scraped up the money and they sent him to the University of St.

  68. Andrews.

  69. Sometime after his graduation from the University of St. Andrews, Knox was introduced to a preacher

  70. by the name of George Weissart.

  71. Weissart was, in fact, instrumental in Knox's conversion to Christ.

  72. Knox began preaching after Weissart was martyred by the local cardinal in Scotland.

  73. In fact, when Mary I, first came to power, she was known as Bloody Mary, you might have heard

  74. of her in history.

  75. Knox fled to Geneva where he studied under a man named John Calvin.

  76. After the death of Mary in 1558, amidst a renewed Protestant insurgency in Scotland,

  77. Knox returned to Edinburgh in 1559 and began preaching, despite a price that was thrown at

  78. his head.

  79. Throughout the years following, God used John Knox to see hundreds, even thousands of Scots

  80. professed faith in Christ, Knox was known throughout Scotland as a man who feared God more than

  81. he feared anything or anyone else.

  82. He was known also as a man of prayer.

  83. Another Mary, Mary Queen of Scots, who came to power later in John's life, is reported to

  84. have said that she fears the prayers of John Knox more than all the assembled armies of Europe.

  85. One of John Knox's more famous prayers that he prayed was simply this, God, give me Scotland

  86. or I die.

  87. He was known for that, God, give me Scotland or I die.

  88. And God granted his request.

  89. God used John Knox.

  90. He used his insatiable desire for his country to rejuvenate the preachers in Scotland and

  91. to start God's churches throughout the nations, thus in turn reforming the church in Scotland.

  92. Through God's providence, John's legacy includes some 750,000 believers in Scotland, over 3 million

  93. in the United States, and countless more worldwide, all starting with someone who simply had the

  94. desire to see his country come to Christ.

  95. Praying the prayer, God, give me Scotland or I die.

  96. I think that John's life and his prayer carries implications for us today as we look at John

    John 21 chapter mention

  97. chapter 21.

  98. And so what I want to do is I'm going to read the passage.

  99. I'm a big believer.

  100. Let's read the whole passage we're going to look at together.

  101. Then we're going to come back and let's kind of chop it up and walk through it as we go.

  102. Good?

  103. Yes?

  104. All right.

  105. So John 21, starting in verse number one, and I'm going to read.

  106. I think it's on the screens, but I don't have the clicker.

  107. So if it's not, just follow along in the Bible.

  108. We've all got Bibles, right?

  109. John 21, verse one.

  110. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he

  111. revealed himself in this way.

  112. Simon Peter, Thomas called the twin, Nathaniel of Canaan and Galilee, the sons of Zebedee,

  113. and two others of his disciples were together.

  114. Simon Peter said to them, I'm going fishing.

  115. They said to him, we will go with you.

  116. And they went out and got into the boat.

  117. But that night they caught nothing.

  118. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not know that

  119. it was Jesus.

  120. Jesus said to them, children, do you have any fish?

  121. And they answered him, no.

  122. He said to them, cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.

  123. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because of the quantity

  124. of fish.

  125. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  126. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped

  127. for work, and threw himself into the sea.

  128. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far

  129. from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

  130. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place with fish laid out on it and bread.

  131. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  132. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, 153 of them.

  133. And although there were many, the net was not torn.

  134. Jesus then said to them, come and have breakfast.

  135. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  136. They knew it was the Lord.

  137. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.

  138. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised

  139. from the dead.

  140. Verse 15.

  141. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you

  142. love me more than these?

  143. And he said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  144. He said to him, feed my lambs.

  145. He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  146. He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  147. He said to him, tend my sheep.

  148. Verse 17.

  149. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  150. And Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, do you love me?

  151. And he said to him, Lord, you know everything.

  152. You know that I love you.

  153. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

  154. Would you pray with me this morning as we get started?

  155. Father, we declare to you this morning that there is none like you.

  156. There is none greater than you in the heavens or on the earth.

  157. And so, Father, it is with that attitude that we come before you this morning,

  158. and we ask very humbly that you would speak to us, that you would teach us.

  159. Father, we pray that you would use this time to deepen our affections for your word,

  160. to deepen our affections for you.

  161. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  162. All right, so John 21, right?

  163. I want to give you some background on kind of what we're looking at in John 21,

  164. and we're going to work through it together. You with me?

  165. So as we get into John 21, right before we come to these men,

  166. they're gathered by the Sea of Tiberias.

  167. We kind of see in the chapters leading up to this the death and the resurrection of Jesus,

  168. as well as him appearing to the disciples a couple of times.

  169. You with me, right?

  170. The most recent being in the chapter before this,

  171. you see Jesus appear to Thomas, right?

  172. Doubting Thomas.

  173. You can, you know, put your fingers, see my wounds, put your fingers in my wounds,

  174. and you can see that I'm real and that I'm really here.

  175. So if you keep in mind that there's only about 40 days between the resurrection of Christ

  176. and his ascension into heaven, which is what we see in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  177. you've got to believe that these guys who are gathered here by the Sea of Tiberias

  178. are probably a little shell-shocked over the events of the last month, right?

  179. Just a little bit shell-shocked over what's going on.

  180. I mean, they've spent the last three years of their lives living with Jesus every day.

  181. They gave up everything they had.

  182. They followed him.

  183. When he first called these men, you remember,

  184. Jesus instructed them to leave everything behind,

  185. their families, their livelihoods, everything, and follow him.

  186. In fact, you see Matthew and Mark in the Gospels,

  187. you see in Matthew and Mark, excuse me, in the Gospels,

  188. two of the disciples leave their father, right?

  189. They left everything.

  190. James and John left their father to go be with Jesus,

  191. three years with Jesus, spent watching him heal the sick and raise the dead

  192. and comfort and encourage people,

  193. preach to the masses about the glory of God,

  194. all culminating in his murder at the hands of the Jews and the Romans.

  195. Okay, so I've got to believe there's some shell-shockedness going on here.

  196. Their heads are no doubt spinning at the events of the last 40 days.

  197. But truthfully, if we're looking at kind of the life of these men

  198. and what they've been through the last three years,

  199. this should not have been a surprise to them, right?

  200. We know that Jesus had been talking to them about his death for a while.

  201. In Mark chapter 14, you see Jesus tell the disciples,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  202. you will all fall away for it is written,

  203. I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.

  204. But after I am raised up, he says, I will go before you to Galilee.

  205. Then in Mark chapter 16, verse 7,

    Mark 16:7

  206. the angel at the tomb instructs Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James,

  207. to go tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee.

  208. There you will see him just as he told you.

  209. So he's telling them that he was going to meet them in Galilee.

  210. He's giving them instruction about what is coming

  211. and what they are to do when it happens.

  212. So when we get into John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  213. it really should be of no surprise that we see these men gathered by the Sea of Tiberias

  214. or more commonly known as the Sea of Galilee.

  215. What is surprising here, though,

  216. about this entire episode that you see in John 21

  217. is the picture that's being painted for us here by John.

  218. There is some surprise at what's going on within John 21

  219. and within the picture that we are seeing.

  220. So if you look back with me to John 21, verses 1 and 2,

    John 21:1

  221. I want to take a moment and we're going to walk through the passage

  222. and we want to make some notes along the way as we go

  223. concerning this specific picture.

  224. There's an illustration, there's some imagery here

  225. that John wants to make sure that we don't miss.

  226. This verbiage that John uses to give us a very vivid picture

  227. of what is happening with these guys.

  228. And as we look at this, I want you to remember something else

  229. as we walk through this passage for the next few minutes.

  230. And this is the statement.

  231. Words mean things.

  232. Okay?

  233. Words mean things.

  234. Words that you say, words that you don't say,

  235. words that you see in Scripture.

  236. Words mean things.

  237. And many times, a singular word can make the difference

  238. when you're reading Scripture between us making up our own mind

  239. about whatever we're interpreting going on here

  240. versus how the Scripture was intended to be understood.

  241. And so I want to take note of the very specific language

  242. that John is using here to describe this scene

  243. because I think it helps us get a clearer picture

  244. of this little interchange that we see take place

  245. between John and Peter.

  246. So John 21, verses 1 and 2.

    John 21:1

  247. After this, look back with me.

  248. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples

  249. by the Sea of Tiberias.

  250. He revealed himself in this way.

  251. Simon Peter, Thomas called the twin,

  252. Nathaniel of Canaan, Galilee, the sons of Zebedee,

  253. and two others of his disciples were together.

  254. So here's what we have.

  255. Peter, six other guys are together.

  256. Maybe experiencing a little bit of trepidation

  257. over what they'd seen the last few weeks.

  258. They decide to go fishing.

  259. So the first kind of two words of this passage

  260. set the stage for what we're going to see.

  261. It says, after this, well, after what?

  262. After the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

  263. After he's appeared to the guys a few times.

  264. But here in particular,

  265. it's after the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

  266. The disciples had returned to Galilee from Jerusalem

  267. as instructed by Jesus.

  268. And Jesus appears to them by the Sea of Tiberias.

  269. And so here's where we begin to see this specific language

  270. that will give us kind of this mental illustration

  271. of the scene taking place.

  272. John names when this is taking place.

  273. He gives you specifically when this is taking place.

  274. And he gives you names, right?

  275. He names names of who is there.

  276. Okay?

  277. And so we may mention this earlier.

  278. Sea of Tiberias is also known as the Sea of Galilee.

  279. If you look back at John 6,

  280. you would see this is not the first time

  281. that John has called the Sea of Galilee

  282. the Sea of Tiberias.

  283. So we see they're here,

  284. where so much of the time that Jesus had spent.

  285. Anybody ever been to Israel?

  286. The Sea of Galilee is,

  287. I mean, if you ever get to go,

  288. the Sea of Galilee was my favorite spot

  289. because it hasn't changed in thousands of years.

  290. It's the same as it was when Jesus walked on it.

  291. And this is where so much of Jesus' ministry

  292. had taken place,

  293. so much time that he spent with them.

  294. And it's important to note also,

  295. this is their home.

  296. Okay?

  297. This is where these guys are from.

  298. It's their home.

  299. And so if you've ever been,

  300. it's awesome.

  301. You should go.

  302. So Jesus reveals himself in this way.

  303. And then John tells us specifically who's there.

  304. Simon Peter,

  305. Thomas called the Twin,

  306. who we refer to as Doubting Thomas.

  307. Read about it in the previous chapter.

  308. Nathaniel of Canaan and Galilee,

  309. the sons of Zebedee,

  310. who were James and John.

  311. You remember the name that they were given,

  312. the sons of thunder?

  313. If you ever want to call me,

  314. I want to be a son of thunder.

  315. Okay?

  316. I think it's a great name.

  317. Call me.

  318. I want to be a son of thunder.

  319. And then two others of his disciples

  320. who are nameless in John 21

  321. that John tells us.

  322. So you've got this picture in your mind.

  323. They're by the sea.

  324. There's seven of them together.

  325. They're hanging out.

  326. They're back home.

  327. And I want to,

  328. as you move into verse three,

  329. you see this phrase,

  330. Peter tells them,

  331. I am going fishing,

  332. right?

  333. And they say to him,

  334. we will go with you.

  335. Now,

  336. I want to take a second

  337. and I want to ask you to think with me

  338. as we kind of move forward.

  339. What does this phrase,

  340. I am going fishing here mean?

  341. Okay?

  342. What does the phrase mean

  343. when Peter says,

  344. I am going fishing

  345. and they said,

  346. we will go with you?

  347. Is this the guys out fishing,

  348. blowing off some steam?

  349. Or is there something else

  350. taking place here

  351. that we need to notice

  352. and that we need to know about?

  353. Well,

  354. as we keep reading,

  355. John answers this question

  356. as we move through the story.

  357. Verse three,

  358. they went out into the boat that night

  359. and they caught nothing.

  360. So notice the specificity

  361. that John uses.

  362. How many fish did they catch?

  363. None,

  364. right?

  365. They caught nothing.

  366. There was no fish.

  367. There was nothing going on.

  368. Verse number four

  369. sets the scene

  370. for where this particular,

  371. the time this particular scene

  372. is happening.

  373. So when did this happen?

  374. Verse number four,

  375. what time of day?

  376. Right?

  377. In the morning time.

  378. So just as day was breaking,

  379. so verse four,

  380. just as day was breaking,

  381. early in the morning,

  382. notice the specificity

  383. that John uses,

  384. just as day was breaking,

  385. Jesus stood on the shore,

  386. yet the disciples

  387. did not know

  388. that it was Jesus.

  389. Jesus said to them,

  390. do you have any fish?

  391. They said no.

  392. And he said,

  393. cast the net where?

  394. Keep working through.

  395. On the right side of the boat.

  396. This is oddly specific,

  397. right?

  398. This is oddly specific

  399. for what you would normally

  400. see in scripture.

  401. Okay,

  402. on the right side of the boat,

  403. that's great.

  404. And you will find some.

  405. So they cast it

  406. and the scripture says

  407. they were not able

  408. to haul it in

  409. because of the quantity of fish.

  410. Then verse number seven,

  411. you see John

  412. names another disciple.

  413. He names himself,

  414. right?

  415. That disciple whom Jesus loved,

  416. that's John,

  417. the disciple whom Jesus loved

  418. therefore said to Peter,

  419. it is the Lord.

  420. So when Simon Peter

  421. heard that it was Lord,

  422. he put on his outer garment

  423. for he was stripped for work

  424. and threw himself

  425. into the sea.

  426. And there in verse number seven

  427. is where I think we get

  428. our first really clear glimpse

  429. at what is actually taking place

  430. in this picture

  431. that John is painting for us.

  432. He begins to answer

  433. the question that we asked earlier

  434. of what does it mean

  435. when Peter says,

  436. I am going fishing.

  437. John isn't really hiding

  438. the fact here

  439. that Peter is working,

  440. right?

  441. Peter's gone fishing.

  442. He's gone back to work.

  443. In fact,

  444. if you remember

  445. back in Matthew chapter number four,

  446. when Jesus first crosses paths

  447. with Andrew and Peter,

  448. they were fishing,

  449. right?

  450. Jesus said to them,

  451. put down your nets

  452. and follow me.

  453. And what does he say?

  454. I will make you fishers of men.

  455. Okay?

  456. So Peter then,

  457. after all this had gone on,

  458. spent three years with Jesus,

  459. the last 30 or 40 days

  460. trying to figure out

  461. what in the world

  462. is happening with my life,

  463. Peter leads these men

  464. back to fishing

  465. on the Sea of Galilee.

  466. And just to make sure

  467. that we know exactly

  468. what John was telling us,

  469. he continues chapter 21

  470. in this specific imagery,

  471. verse number eight.

  472. The disciples came in the boat,

  473. dragging the net full of fish,

  474. for they were not far

  475. from the land.

  476. How far were they

  477. from the land?

  478. About 100 yards,

  479. right?

  480. They got out on land,

  481. they saw what kind

  482. of a fire in place?

  483. A charcoal fire in place

  484. with fish laid out on it

  485. and bread.

  486. So Jesus said to them,

  487. bring some of the fish

  488. that you have just caught.

  489. So Simon Peter went aboard,

  490. hauled the net ashore,

  491. full of large fish.

  492. How many fish?

  493. Okay,

  494. what?

  495. Okay,

  496. so let's have a conversation.

  497. All right?

  498. So you gotta think to yourself,

  499. 153 fish.

  500. Are there fishermen in the room?

  501. Anybody like to fish?

  502. Man,

  503. we love to fish.

  504. If you'll,

  505. I'll be out in the lobby

  506. after it's over,

  507. I'll show you a picture

  508. of a fish my son caught

  509. two nights ago

  510. at this little pond.

  511. It was great.

  512. I mean,

  513. it's,

  514. you know,

  515. we're getting to the point

  516. in our fishing careers

  517. where they don't want to fish

  518. for bluegill anymore.

  519. They want to fish

  520. for largemouth bass

  521. and catfish,

  522. right?

  523. Because you,

  524. like,

  525. we were talking about

  526. this last year.

  527. We were out at this place

  528. over in Jacksboro fishing

  529. and they were just

  530. catching bluegill like crazy,

  531. right?

  532. And I'm just out there

  533. fishing for bass,

  534. you know,

  535. and my sons are like,

  536. don't you want to catch fish?

  537. And I was like,

  538. well,

  539. sure,

  540. but I don't want to catch

  541. bluegill.

  542. I want to catch big fish,

  543. right?

  544. And so,

  545. just get this in your mind

  546. if you're a fisherman.

  547. Are there lakes to fish around here?

  548. I'm sure there are,

  549. right?

  550. Texas,

  551. okay?

  552. Is there good fishing around here?

  553. I need to know this.

  554. This is good to know.

  555. Okay,

  556. good.

  557. All right.

  558. Anybody here have a boat?

  559. Let's just keep going down this.

  560. No?

  561. Okay.

  562. So,

  563. those of you that fish,

  564. okay,

  565. you need to get this picture

  566. in your mind.

  567. They haul this net ashore

  568. full of fish

  569. and it says 153 of them.

  570. Now,

  571. when you throw a net

  572. out into the water,

  573. it kind of goes down.

  574. Anybody ever,

  575. you guys net fish?

  576. Nobody really net fishes anymore,

  577. right?

  578. So,

  579. if you ever watch the video,

  580. they throw the net out

  581. and they kind of cast this wide net

  582. and it goes,

  583. sinks down

  584. and then they pull it up

  585. and it pulls in like everything,

  586. right?

  587. It's not just large fish,

  588. it's everything.

  589. You're going to have,

  590. you know,

  591. if you're fishing on,

  592. you know,

  593. you're fishing at a lake

  594. in Fort Worth,

  595. you're going to get bluegill

  596. and you're going to get bass

  597. and you're going to get

  598. probably carp

  599. and you're going to get,

  600. you know,

  601. just different kinds of,

  602. who knows,

  603. right?

  604. All this kind of fish,

  605. minnows and whatnot.

  606. And so,

  607. they're pulling it ashore

  608. and in the passage,

  609. it says that they couldn't

  610. put it on the boat

  611. so really what they did

  612. was they hauled it ashore.

  613. When I was a kid,

  614. we used to go carp fishing.

  615. You all have carp here?

  616. We used to go carp fishing.

  617. I grew up in Arkansas.

  618. We didn't eat the carp

  619. but we caught them

  620. because they're fun to catch,

  621. right?

  622. They're huge

  623. and they would fight

  624. and I remember

  625. when I was a kid,

  626. I caught one

  627. and I couldn't reel it in

  628. and so I turned around

  629. and put the pole

  630. over my shoulder

  631. and just walked up the bank,

  632. right?

  633. And just pulled the carp

  634. up on the bank.

  635. That's the idea.

  636. So they pull the net up

  637. and they're kind of

  638. dragging it up on the net

  639. and then when you let the net go,

  640. if you've got a net full of fish

  641. and you just let it go

  642. on the bank,

  643. what's going to happen

  644. to the fish?

  645. They're just scattered,

  646. right?

  647. They're all,

  648. they're flopping around,

  649. they're all over the place.

  650. So there's this imagery

  651. that John wants us to see here

  652. that is going on

  653. of this, right?

  654. It's kind of chaotic.

  655. There's fish everywhere.

  656. Obviously,

  657. they counted the fish,

  658. right?

  659. Oddly specific,

  660. 153 large fish

  661. that you see,

  662. okay?

  663. So this is

  664. kind of this scene

  665. with all this

  666. kind of fish everywhere.

  667. I mean,

  668. that would be the definition

  669. of slaying them,

  670. right guys?

  671. If you go fishing

  672. and you catch 153 fish

  673. in one setting

  674. and you don't invite me

  675. the next time you go,

  676. I'm going to be angry

  677. with all of you,

  678. okay?

  679. And I'm going to talk about you

  680. at Redemption City Church

  681. and we're just going to have

  682. a bad time in Fort Worth,

  683. okay?

  684. That is a lot of fish.

  685. There's something to be said here,

  686. though,

  687. about what's going on,

  688. right?

  689. And John kind of alluded to it

  690. a minute ago.

  691. They're not just going fishing,

  692. are they?

  693. They went back to work.

  694. That's what these guys did.

  695. They fished for a living.

  696. They literally,

  697. they took their ball

  698. and they went home,

  699. right?

  700. Occasionally,

  701. my boys will be playing Xbox

  702. and one of them rage quits,

  703. right?

  704. You know what I mean

  705. when I say rage quits?

  706. Like,

  707. they'll be losing,

  708. like,

  709. you know,

  710. in a baseball game,

  711. 15 to nothing

  712. and they're just like,

  713. I'm done,

  714. I quit.

  715. Or like,

  716. when I was growing up,

  717. I would do that to Monopoly.

  718. I would just rage quit,

  719. right?

  720. I'm out.

  721. I don't want to,

  722. I'm losing,

  723. I don't want to do this anymore.

  724. That's what these guys did.

  725. They took their ball

  726. and they just went,

  727. I mean,

  728. they'd had enough.

  729. Jesus had been murdered.

  730. Peter cut the ear off of a dude.

  731. He denied Christ three times.

  732. And what's kind of crazy here

  733. is that we know

  734. this is now the third time,

  735. right?

  736. In verse 14

  737. that Jesus had appeared

  738. to the disciples

  739. after he was raised from the dead.

  740. We had already talked about the fact

  741. that Jesus told them what to do

  742. after all this happened.

  743. He told them he would meet them in Galilee,

  744. but I just have to wonder

  745. if these guys weren't at their wit's end.

  746. And they just throw their hands up in the air

  747. and they say,

  748. I'm out.

  749. It's too much.

  750. It's too hard.

  751. Jesus,

  752. I know that you said

  753. you would meet us in Galilee.

  754. I know that you told us

  755. who would be fishers of men.

  756. I know that we spent

  757. the last three years

  758. of our lives watching you

  759. and learning from you

  760. and being discipled from you,

  761. but bro,

  762. I'm out.

  763. Life is too hard.

  764. I have bills to pay.

  765. I got to make money

  766. so I can live.

  767. I'm tired of other people

  768. making fun of me.

  769. I've got Roman soldiers

  770. looking to kill me.

  771. I'm just tired.

  772. And I think to myself,

  773. my goodness,

  774. have I not been there

  775. in my own life?

  776. Right?

  777. My goodness,

  778. has my life not turned out

  779. the way that I had planned it out

  780. 15 years ago?

  781. Am I the only one in the room?

  782. I didn't think so.

  783. Life is hard.

  784. It is.

  785. I think it's hard

  786. to help us remember

  787. from time to time

  788. that this is not

  789. where we belong,

  790. right?

  791. But it's hard.

  792. It's not easy.

  793. You know,

  794. I had a pretty great life

  795. in Arkansas.

  796. I really did.

  797. It's hard.

  798. Following Christ

  799. is not supposed

  800. to necessarily be easy.

  801. Back to our verses

  802. for the day.

  803. Go to verse 15.

  804. It says,

  805. When they had finished breakfast,

  806. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  807. Simon, son of John,

  808. do you love me

  809. more than these?

  810. Simon, son of John,

  811. do you love me

  812. more than these?

  813. And I want to stop there

  814. just a moment.

  815. I'm going to go back

  816. to something I said

  817. at the very beginning

  818. of our time

  819. because so often

  820. when we're looking

  821. at a passage of Scripture

  822. or studying a passage

  823. of Scripture,

  824. just one word

  825. can make the difference

  826. in whether or not

  827. we understand a passage

  828. correctly or not.

  829. And here today,

  830. I want to submit to you

  831. that that one word

  832. I want to look at

  833. is the word these.

  834. You see it there?

  835. When they had finished breakfast,

  836. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  837. Simon, son of John,

  838. do you love me

  839. more than these?

  840. And I want to stop there

  841. and I want to stop there

  842. and I want to stop there

  843. and I want to stop there

  844. and I want to stop there

  845. and I want to stop there

  846. and I want to stop there

  847. and I want to stop there

  848. We've already answered

  849. one question today.

  850. These guys had quit

  851. what they were doing,

  852. they packed up

  853. and they went home.

  854. But the real question

  855. here in the passage

  856. that we need to answer

  857. is what is Jesus

  858. talking about

  859. when he asked Peter

  860. if he loves him

  861. more than these?

  862. Now,

  863. there are a couple

  864. possibilities

  865. that he could be

  866. talking about

  867. and my whole life

  868. I kind of thought

  869. as I was reading

  870. this passage

  871. and studying it

  872. that he was talking

  873. about the other disciples

  874. that were around the fire.

  875. Right?

  876. They had all gathered up,

  877. there's this fire,

  878. the charcoal fire

  879. with fish and bread on it

  880. and they were all together,

  881. it was breakfast time,

  882. they were probably eating,

  883. there's all these fish

  884. all over the shore

  885. and my whole life

  886. I thought,

  887. man,

  888. is Jesus saying,

  889. you know,

  890. Peter,

  891. do you love me

  892. more than your friends?

  893. Right?

  894. Do you love me

  895. more than these?

  896. Do you love me

  897. more than your friends?

  898. Until a few years ago

  899. I was in a doctoral seminar

  900. in Louisville, Kentucky

  901. and someone interjected

  902. another thought.

  903. So think about this

  904. with me for a moment.

  905. Why would John

  906. be so specific

  907. about the events

  908. of the evening

  909. and the events

  910. of the early morning

  911. only to flip the script

  912. on what he was talking about

  913. all of a sudden

  914. in verse 15

  915. and all of a sudden

  916. not be as specific

  917. as he was being earlier.

  918. The previous 14 verses

  919. that we looked at

  920. have all been about

  921. how these men went fishing,

  922. caught nothing,

  923. saw Jesus,

  924. caught a ton of fish,

  925. laid them out on the beach

  926. to count,

  927. and now are sitting around,

  928. maybe standing around

  929. a fire eating breakfast,

  930. the whole story

  931. revolving around fishing.

  932. And I just wonder

  933. if Peter didn't look,

  934. if Jesus didn't look at Peter

  935. and say something

  936. like this, right?

  937. Remember that maybe

  938. they're sitting around

  939. the fire,

  940. maybe Peter and Jesus

  941. were walking together

  942. and maybe Jesus

  943. puts his arm around Peter

  944. and he says,

  945. hey Simon.

  946. And that right there

  947. would have caused

  948. Peter to pause.

  949. By calling him Simon,

  950. Jesus goes back

  951. to using his old name.

  952. You notice that?

  953. He goes back

  954. to using his old name.

  955. This must have been

  956. terribly defeating

  957. for Peter.

  958. Jesus had already

  959. changed his name

  960. to Cephas,

  961. which means stone or rock,

  962. right?

  963. And now,

  964. in the midst of all of this,

  965. Jesus is going back

  966. to his old name?

  967. Hear me church,

  968. never,

  969. when you are working

  970. and trying to heal

  971. a guilty conscience,

  972. should you minimize

  973. the seriousness

  974. of the offense

  975. or conceal the source

  976. of the old sin nature

  977. that we all have.

  978. Jesus didn't do that

  979. with Peter either.

  980. Hey Peter,

  981. the Simon is still in you.

  982. The Simon is still there.

  983. You have to fight

  984. against that.

  985. Right?

  986. Jesus didn't do that.

  987. His first word to Peter,

  988. Jesus calls him out.

  989. Simon,

  990. son of John,

  991. do you love me

  992. more than these?

  993. And I just wonder

  994. if he said that.

  995. He said,

  996. hey Simon,

  997. do you love me

  998. more than these?

  999. And maybe gesture

  1000. down at the fish.

  1001. All these fish,

  1002. 153 large fish

  1003. on the shore.

  1004. And Jesus says,

  1005. hey man,

  1006. do you love me

1007. more than you love fish?

  1008. Now,

  1009. why would Jesus

  1010. ask Peter this question?

  1011. I have to believe

  1012. a look of realization

  1013. came over Peter's face

  1014. when Peter concludes

  1015. that Jesus is asking

  1016. Peter this question

  1017. because,

  1018. bro,

1019. you sure did go back home

  1020. really quick.

  1021. It's been 40 days,

  1022. man.

  1023. 40 days.

1024. We spent all this time

  1025. together

1026. and you just went home.

  1027. Jesus says to Peter,

  1028. do you love me

  1029. more than these?

  1030. I submit to you

  1031. that the these,

  1032. they're the fish

  1033. that he's talking about.

  1034. Peter says,

  1035. yes Lord,

1036. you know that I love you.

  1037. Jesus says to him,

  1038. feed my lambs.

  1039. Verse 16,

  1040. he said to him

  1041. a second time,

  1042. Simon,

  1043. son of John,

  1044. do you love me?

  1045. He said to him,

  1046. yes Lord,

1047. do you know that I love you?

  1048. He said to him,

  1049. tend my sheep.

1050. Says it a third time

  1051. in verse 17,

  1052. right?

  1053. Simon,

  1054. son of John,

  1055. do you love me?

  1056. But this time,

  1057. Peter's reaction

  1058. is different,

  1059. isn't it?

  1060. What does the scripture

1061. say Peter is this time?

  1062. He's grieved.

  1063. I think if Jesus

1064. was talking about his friends,

  1065. I think that's

  1066. a harder conversation.

  1067. I think,

  1068. man,

  1069. are you really willing

1070. to give up your friends?

  1071. Are you really willing

  1072. to die for me?

  1073. Are you really willing

  1074. to give up,

  1075. you know,

  1076. your relationships

  1077. for me?

  1078. I think that's

  1079. a harder conversation.

  1080. If you're asking me

  1081. if I love you

1082. more than I love fish,

  1083. I'm upset.

  1084. It's fish,

  1085. man.

  1086. I'm upset.

  1087. I'm bothered by that.

  1088. And obviously,

1089. Peter is bothered by that.

  1090. It says,

  1091. Peter was heartbroken.

  1092. Peter was grieved

1093. because he said to them

  1094. this third time,

  1095. do you love me?

  1096. Peter responds to him.

  1097. He says,

  1098. Lord,

  1099. you know everything.

1100. You know that I love you.

  1101. Jesus said to him,

  1102. feed my sheep.

1103. And I have to wonder

  1104. here in this moment

  1105. if Peter didn't realize

  1106. that he had allowed

  1107. what was comfortable

  1108. to him,

  1109. what he knew,

  1110. to completely sidetrack him

  1111. from what God

1112. had called him to do,

  1113. which was to be

  1114. fishers of men,

  1115. right?

  1116. You remember.

  1117. Come follow me,

  1118. I'll make you

  1119. fishers of men.

1120. But then I think to myself,

1121. it's so easy to do that,

  1122. isn't it?

1123. It's so easy in my life

  1124. to get so sidetracked

  1125. with what I know

1126. God is telling me to do

  1127. or what I know

1128. God has called me to do

  1129. that I just completely

  1130. lose sight of what

1131. I'm supposed to be doing.

  1132. I'm focused here,

  1133. I'm focused here.

  1134. You don't understand.

  1135. God,

  1136. I've got a family

  1137. to take care of.

  1138. You don't understand

1139. I've got mouths to feed

1140. and my kids are getting bigger

1141. and they eat more than I do

  1142. and I don't really know

1143. what's going on with my life

  1144. and things are getting

  1145. more expensive

  1146. and gas is,

  1147. I don't know,

1148. three or four dollars a gallon

  1149. and I'm just,

  1150. I don't know what to do,

  1151. right?

  1152. Insurance is going up.

  1153. It's crazy.

1154. I've got all this stuff

  1155. going on

  1156. and it's so easy

  1157. in the hardness

  1158. of the life

  1159. that we live

  1160. to get completely sidetracked

1161. from what God's calling us to do.

  1162. Interestingly here though

  1163. in this passage,

1164. Jesus goes a step further

1165. as if he hasn't gone far enough.

  1166. He tells Peter

  1167. to feed his sheep,

  1168. right?

1169. You see that three times

  1170. Jesus said,

  1171. feed my sheep,

1172. starting in verse number 15.

  1173. What's the significance

  1174. of this question?

  1175. Well,

1176. it may be that Jesus

  1177. is restoring Peter,

  1178. right?

1179. Peter denied him three times,

1180. Jesus asked him three times,

  1181. feed my sheep,

  1182. or you know,

  1183. do you love me?

1184. It may be some restoration,

  1185. but there may be

  1186. another reason here.

  1187. When Jesus first called,

1188. we talked about this already,

1189. when Jesus first called Peter

  1190. as a disciple,

  1191. he was fishing.

1192. Jesus said he would make him

  1193. a fisher of men.

  1194. Here though,

1195. I want us to notice

1196. that Jesus doesn't tell Peter

  1197. to go fishing,

  1198. does he?

  1199. Jesus changes Peter's profession.

  1200. It's not,

  1201. come follow me

1202. and I will make you

  1203. fishers of men.

  1204. Jesus changes Peter's profession

  1205. from fisherman

  1206. to shepherd,

  1207. right?

1208. You are a shepherd now.

1209. You are never to go back.

1210. You are never to be this way.

1211. You are never to be this person again.

  1212. You're done.

1213. You will always be a shepherd.

1214. He changes his whole profession.

1215. Where you were a fisher,

1216. now you are a shepherd.

1217. And that's what I want you to do.

1218. It's this only move forward.

  1219. That's what Jesus said.

  1220. Only move forward.

1221. Forget what's in the past.

  1222. Right?

  1223. In fact,

1224. you see the Apostle Paul

1225. say the very same thing

  1226. a few years later

  1227. in his letter

  1228. to the Philippian Christians.

  1229. Brothers,

  1230. I do not consider

1231. that I have made it my own,

1232. but one thing I do,

  1233. forgetting what lies behind

  1234. and straining forward

  1235. to what lies ahead,

1236. I press on toward the goal

  1237. for the prize

  1238. of the upward call

1239. of God in Christ Jesus.

  1240. Move forward.

  1241. Pay attention

  1242. to the calling

  1243. on your life.

1244. Listen to me this morning

  1245. first about his church,

  1246. Henrietta, Texas.

  1247. In the same way

  1248. that Jesus called Peter

1249. from a life of fishing

1250. to a life of shepherding the sheep,

  1251. in the same way

  1252. that Jesus called Paul

  1253. from a life

  1254. as an unbelieving Pharisee

  1255. and persecutor of Christians

  1256. to a life

  1257. as a missionary,

  1258. preacher,

  1259. pastor,

  1260. and apologist,

  1261. in the same way

  1262. that he called

  1263. those two men,

  1264. Jesus has called

  1265. each of us

  1266. to live our life

  1267. not for ourself,

1268. but to live our lives

1269. for the kingdom of God.

  1270. He has called us

  1271. out of darkness

  1272. into light.

  1273. He has called us

1274. to share the good news

  1275. of Christ's death,

  1276. burial,

  1277. and resurrection

  1278. with a lost world

  1279. that desperately needs

  1280. that information,

  1281. that desperately needs

  1282. the saving power

  1283. that is found

1284. in the blood of Jesus Christ,

  1285. and the question

1286. you need to ask yourself today

  1287. is simply this.

  1288. What's keeping you

  1289. from doing just that?

  1290. I am positive

  1291. that there are people

  1292. all over Henrietta, Texas

  1293. that need to know

  1294. who Jesus is.

  1295. I'm positive.

  1296. I'm positive

  1297. there are people

  1298. all over Clay County

  1299. who need to know

  1300. who Jesus Christ is.

  1301. I'm positive

  1302. that there are people

  1303. all over Wichita Falls

  1304. who need to know

  1305. who Jesus is.

  1306. What's keeping us

  1307. from sharing the gospel?

  1308. What's keeping us

  1309. from going on mission?

  1310. What's holding us back?

1311. Or maybe a better question

  1312. is what's your fish?

1313. Maybe it's not actual fish.

  1314. What's your fish?

1315. I know what mine is.

  1316. Mine's comfort.

  1317. Mine's comfort.

  1318. I don't...

  1319. I just want peace

  1320. and quiet and comfort.

  1321. But that can turn

  1322. really, really bad

1323. for me really, really quickly.

  1324. Right?

  1325. What's your fish?

  1326. What is it?

  1327. What is keeping you

  1328. from doing

1329. what God has called you?

  1330. What's keeping you

  1331. from walking next door

  1332. and sharing the gospel

  1333. with your neighbor

  1334. who you know

  1335. desperately needs

  1336. the message

1337. of Christ on the cross?

  1338. What's keeping you

1339. from going to the school

  1340. and loving on teachers

  1341. and loving on students?

  1342. What's keeping you

  1343. from going out

  1344. into Clay County

  1345. and sharing the gospel

  1346. with people

  1347. all over this county

  1348. who needs to know

  1349. the beauty

  1350. and the grace

  1351. and the mercy

  1352. that is found

  1353. in the blood

  1354. of Jesus Christ?

  1355. What's your fish?

  1356. I was reminded

  1357. the other day,

  1358. continually reminded really,

1359. of how easy it is

  1360. to fake this life.

  1361. There's so many

  1362. other things going on,

  1363. so many other things

  1364. that are vying

  1365. for our attention,

  1366. for our thoughts.

  1367. What's your fish?

  1368. What's your fish?

  1369. What's your fish?

  1370. What's your fish?

  1371. And if the question

  1372. that I would ask

1373. for you to ask yourself

  1374. is what's your fish,

1375. the question that I would

  1376. posit to you today

  1377. out of John 21

  1378. is how's your heart?

  1379. How's your heart?

  1380. How's your relationship

  1381. with Christ?

1382. What does that look like?

1383. Do you have a relationship

  1384. with Christ?

  1385. I'm not asking you

  1386. if you were saved

  1387. 30 years ago.

  1388. I'm asking you,

  1389. how's your relationship

  1390. with Christ today?

  1391. How are you doing

  1392. walking with Christ?

  1393. How are you doing

  1394. in that?

  1395. How are you doing

1396. in living in the calling

1397. that God has given to you?

  1398. I guarantee you

1399. that God wants to do

1400. a work here in Henrietta.

  1401. Matter of fact,

  1402. if you look back

  1403. over the history

  1404. of your church,

  1405. you've done it before.

1406. Continuing to do it now.

  1407. Look at the people

  1408. in the room.

  1409. God wants to do

1410. a work here in Henrietta

1411. through this body of believers.

  1412. Are we really

  1413. going to allow something

  1414. with zero eternal significance

1415. to get in the way of that?

  1416. And I'm not asking

  1417. that question to myself.

  1418. You're just,

  1419. you're here for a personal

  1420. counseling session,

  1421. so you're hearing

  1422. a personal counseling session

1423. that I'm having with myself.

  1424. Back to our story

  1425. about John Knox

1426. for a moment from earlier.

  1427. I just wonder

  1428. what would happen

  1429. if the rallying cry

1430. of this body of believers

  1431. became give us Henrietta

  1432. or kill us.

  1433. One or the other.

  1434. One or the other.

  1435. God, give me Henrietta

  1436. or I'd die.

1437. God, give me Clay County

  1438. or I'd die.

  1439. I wonder what,

1440. I wonder what this place

  1441. would look like,

  1442. this whole area

  1443. would look like

  1444. a year from now.

  1445. God, give us Henrietta

  1446. or kill us.

1447. So here's what I want to do.

1448. I want you to bow your heads.

1449. I want you to close your eyes

1450. with me for the next few

  1451. moments together.

1452. And I want to just

1453. ask you some questions, okay?

  1454. I want to,

  1455. I don't really know

  1456. how y'all normally

  1457. do an invitation,

1458. so I'm going to let you

  1459. just sit.

  1460. I think the band's

1461. going to come back up

  1462. and sing and play

1463. here in just a second,

1464. but I want you to sit,

1465. I want you to ask

  1466. some questions

  1467. and I want you

  1468. to take an inventory.

  1469. And here's my encouragement

1470. to you with your heads

1471. bowed and your eyes closed.

  1472. Here's my encouragement

  1473. to you this morning.

  1474. It's easier to lie

  1475. to yourself

1476. than it is to anybody else.

  1477. Okay?

  1478. It's easier to justify

  1479. to yourself

1480. than it is to anybody else.

  1481. So don't do that.

  1482. Okay?

  1483. Okay?

  1484. So don't do that.

  1485. Take an inventory.

  1486. And the first question

1487. that I want you to answer

  1488. is how's your relationship

  1489. with Christ today?

  1490. How's your relationship

  1491. with Christ today?

  1492. Okay?

1493. Do you have a relationship

  1494. with Christ?

  1495. If you don't,

1496. I would love the opportunity

  1497. to talk with you

  1498. in the lobby

1499. after the service is over.

  1500. Greg would too.

1501. And the other deacons here

1502. I'm sure would be out there

  1503. as well.

  1504. Would love to talk

  1505. with you about it.

  1506. Please,

  1507. I beg of you,

  1508. do not rest

  1509. on that you walked

1510. an aisle 30 years ago.

  1511. How's your relationship

  1512. with Christ today?

  1513. Second question.

  1514. From the passage

  1515. we read today,

  1516. what's your fish?

  1517. What is it

  1518. that you're allowing

1519. to keep you from doing

  1520. what God has called

  1521. you to do?

  1522. Y'all,

  1523. I am Peter.

  1524. I am.

1525. I let things get in the way.

1526. I let things dominate me

  1527. that shouldn't dominate me.

  1528. I have to continually

  1529. ask myself,

  1530. continually take

  1531. this inventory

1532. of what are the things

  1533. that I'm allowing

  1534. in my life

1535. to get in the way

  1536. of what I know

1537. God's called me to do.

1538. What is that for you?

1539. What is that for you?

1540. What is that for you?

1541. What would it be like

  1542. if the rallying cry

  1543. of First Baptist Church

  1544. Henrietta, Texas

  1545. was simply,

  1546. God, give us Henrietta

  1547. or we die.

  1548. Father, I pray

  1549. your blessing

  1550. over this church.

  1551. Father, I pray

  1552. your blessing

  1553. over them

  1554. as they

  1555. go out

  1556. and they reach

  1557. their community

  1558. for you.

  1559. Father, I pray

  1560. that you would

  1561. give them

  1562. vigor,

  1563. that you would

  1564. give them boldness

  1565. as they go.

  1566. Father, I pray

  1567. that you would

  1568. encourage them

  1569. along the way.

  1570. Father, I pray

  1571. that this area

  1572. would become known

  1573. throughout Texas,

  1574. throughout America,

  1575. throughout the world

1576. as a place of revival,

1577. as a place of awakening.

  1578. Father, I'm so

  1579. encouraged by

  1580. everything that Sam

  1581. says about

  1582. this great group

  1583. of people.

  1584. I'm so encouraged.

  1585. I'm so encouraged

  1586. of how they love

  1587. Sam and Holly.

  1588. I'm so encouraged

  1589. of how they love

  1590. their city.

  1591. Father, bless them.

  1592. Father, give us

  1593. Henrietta

  1594. or we die.

  1595. Amen.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.

  1601. Amen.
