  1. All right, y'all, we just sang, you are the same God.

  2. And there's no truer words than God is the same God now that he's ever been.

  3. God is capable of all of it.

  4. I think the only difference is how much you and I get in his way.

  5. So that's what we're going to talk about this Sunday

  6. as we conclude our series on new life,

  7. a fresh beginning with Jesus.

  8. I'm going to run back through the previous weeks

  9. in case you're a guest with us this morning,

  10. and you can get a very small summary of what we've covered in this week,

  11. beginning with the verse you just saw in the video a moment ago,

  12. 2 Corinthians 5, 17,

  13. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  14. The old has passed away, and see, the new has come.

  15. We began our series talking about how God is clearly doing a new thing in our church

  16. as we see the evidences of that all around us.

  17. And then we moved on to say we, you and I,

  18. have to have a change of mind in that we stop trying

  19. and start training and understanding that God is training us

  20. to be who he wants us to be.

  21. When we fail, it's part of the training,

  22. not us continually trying on our own strength.

  23. Then thirdly, we covered that we do what we do

  24. because of what we think of who we are.

  25. Our identity comes from who we think of ourselves,

  26. and our identity breeds our behavior.

  27. So we do what we do because of what we think of us.

  28. Then we jumped into Hebrews chapter 12 and Philippians chapter 3,

Hebrews 12 chapter mention Philippians 3 chapter mention

  29. and we had a three-part series that said,

  30. first of all, lay aside the weights,

  31. and the weights can slow us down.

  32. We had a very visual foot race

  33. that showed just how much the weights can slow us down.

  34. And we said, what are we holding on to?

  35. Is there something in our life that is slowing us down

  36. that we need to lay down, lay aside?

  37. Or is there something or someone that is holding on to us,

  38. and we need to forget what lies behind

  39. and reach forward to what lies ahead,

  40. which brought us into the next portion of that sub-series,

  41. which was let us run.

  42. First, lay aside the weights, and then let us run.

  43. We had these two statements.

  44. First, start moving.

  45. Reach forward to what lies ahead,

  46. to what God has for you.

  47. Reach forward to that.

  48. Sometimes we just have to start moving,

  49. and then secondly, run with endurance,

  50. so we have to keep going.

  51. Keep going.

  52. Don't quit.

  53. The only difference between a white belt in karate

  54. and a black belt in karate

  55. is the white belt never stopped training

  56. until he became a black belt.

  57. So we must keep going and run with endurance

  58. to see the fulfillment of who God is training us to be.

  59. Then, we got into the third part.

  60. Lay aside the weight.

  61. Let us run.

  62. And finally, look at Jesus.

  63. Look at Jesus.

  64. We simply have to put our eyes up.

  65. Eyes up.

  66. When we look all around us, we get distressed.

  67. But when we look at Christ, we are at rest.

  68. And then secondly, we press toward the prize.

  69. What is the prize?

  70. It is the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  71. Jesus is ever calling us upward.

  72. Someday, we'll all go home upward

  73. to be with him in heaven forever.

  74. But until that day, he's drawing us ever upward,

  75. closer to himself, more in the image of who he is.

  76. The world wants to drag you down.

  77. Jesus is calling you upward.

  78. And so we press toward that prize.

  79. Then, last week, we said that God is a God of continual change.

  80. And he has called us, you and me, to be agents of change.

  81. He is changing us from the inside out.

  82. If you and I are in the same place with our walk with God

  83. as we were last year or six months ago

  84. or five years ago or ten years ago,

  85. we're not walking closely with Jesus

  86. because God wants to change us

  87. ever upward, ever more into his image.

  88. So he's a God of continual change.

  89. And we must embrace the change that he brings to us,

  90. not push back against it,

  91. which brings us to where we are this morning.

  92. Now, let me ask you this question.

  93. How many of y'all have ever met a celebrity?

  94. Would you raise your hand?

  95. Anybody ever met a celebrity?

  96. There's quite a few.

  97. Like a bona fide, been-on-TV celebrity, right?

  98. Not just that one time they interviewed you

  99. on a news station or something.

  100. I'm saying like a real celebrity, you know?

  101. They got a Wikipedia page and everything, okay?

  102. I met a celebrity one time.

  103. There we go.

  104. That was downtown Nashville.

  105. Anybody have any idea who that is?

  106. Yeah.

  107. So, I mean, he's not like an A-list celebrity, all right?

  108. But, hey, there was a time when he was on TV a lot.

  109. His name is Marcus Limonis.

  110. And he was a celebrity for me

  111. because I used to really enjoy his show.

  112. So, here's a little thing about that.

  113. There's no way you're going to be able to read

  114. what those words are.

  115. But that's all right.

  116. It said,

  117. 40,000 businesses want him to come to their rescue.

  118. So this guy was a famous businessman.

  119. In short, he started Camping World,

  120. which is the nation's largest RV retailer.

  121. And became a billionaire doing that.

  122. And he got his own show on CNBC

  123. about coming in and rescuing failing businesses.

  124. And he would come in.

  125. It was called The Profit.

  126. There's a little tagline,

  127. My Millions, My Rules.

  128. See, that was the thing.

  129. He would come in and put up a large amount of money

  130. by half of their business.

  131. But he would say,

  132. I am 100% in charge.

  133. And for the first week,

  134. you have to do everything I say

  135. because there's a reason you're failing.

  136. It's all these bad business practices that you've had.

  137. And so he would rescue business after business like this,

  138. except for some of the times,

  139. the owners just didn't want to give up control.

  140. And Marcus Limonis was non-negotiable about that.

  141. He would say,

  142. I am 100% in charge.

  143. Since I've bought half your company,

  144. technically we're 50-50 partners.

  145. But for this first week,

  146. it's not going to look like that.

  147. I'm going to be 100% in charge.

  148. That was the deal from the very beginning.

  149. But inevitably,

  150. there would be an occasional owner

  151. who would push back.

  152. And I literally watched an episode of this

  153. to get this back in my mind last night.

  154. And I literally heard this owner say,

  155. I don't care if he's a billionaire or not,

  156. doesn't mean he knows how to run a popcorn stand.

  157. I'm like, well,

  158. he might be able to wrap his head around that concept.

  159. I don't know.

  160. And sure enough,

  161. that business ended up not doing well.

  162. But what I realized is,

  163. none of us like to give up control.

  164. It's easy when you're watching that television show,

  165. and you know the background of the host,

  166. the star there,

  167. and you know what he's capable of

  168. and all that they're missing out on

  169. because you've seen how he's helped these other businesses.

  170. You know all they're missing out on

  171. by not listening to his way.

  172. But it's really hard to put yourself in their shoes

  173. when they started that business from scrap,

  174. built it from the ground up,

  175. have thrown their lifeblood,

  176. their savings, their retirement,

  177. borrowed money from family sometimes.

  178. They are completely all in to this business,

  179. and they're terrified that somebody else

  180. who is not as invested as they are,

  181. if it went under,

  182. it wouldn't hurt them at all.

  183. They're scared that that person is going to fail them.

  184. So they're scared to give up control.

  185. Right?

  186. When the money's on the table,

  187. and he says,

  188. I have to be 100% in charge,

  189. they might be willing to shake his hand

  190. and say,

  191. okay, we have a deal.

  192. But when it comes to,

  193. you've got to change this,

  194. you've got to fire this person,

  195. you've got to stop doing it this way,

  196. all of a sudden,

  197. they don't want him to be 100% in charge anymore.

  198. That's not the problem.

  199. The problem is,

  200. I just don't have enough resources.

  201. The problem's not with me.

  202. The problem's always with somebody else.

  203. So we never want to give up 100% control.

  204. In this scenario,

  205. First Baptist Church,

  206. Henrietta, Texas,

  207. you and me

  208. are the business owners.

  209. And I don't think God's ever been compared to Marcus Limonis,

  210. but in this scenario,

  211. God is the expert,

  212. the all-time expert,

  213. we'll never find anyone

  214. who knows more about what we ought to do

  215. than our Creator.

  216. And He's coming in saying,

  217. I have to be 100% in charge.

  218. Because if I'm not,

  219. I can't guarantee the success

  220. that I want for you so badly.

  221. It's more than just earthly success.

  222. Number one,

  223. it's forgiveness of sins.

  224. It's an eternal destiny in heaven.

  225. And if you're not willing to give up

  226. 100% control of that to God,

  227. and if you're still holding on to hope,

  228. saying,

  229. I think I can get there.

  230. I think I'm good enough.

  231. Nobody's perfect,

  232. but I think I've lived a pretty good life,

  233. and I think I can get there

  234. by my own strength.

  235. You'll never get there.

  236. You'll never win.

  237. You'll always end up falling short.

  238. Romans 3.23 reminds us.

  239. So,

  240. our topic for today

  241. is I surrender all.

  242. The business owner I watched last night

  243. desperately needed to give up.

  244. She didn't need to walk away from the business,

  245. but she needed to hand over control.

  246. She needed to wave the white flag

  247. and stop fighting

  248. against the man who was trying to help

  249. with all of her business acumen,

  250. all of her experience,

  251. all of her resources,

  252. saying,

  253. I'm invested in this as well.

  254. I've now invested a whole bunch of money into this.

  255. I want this to succeed,

  256. so I get a return on my investment,

  257. plus my TV show can look good.

  258. But she just wouldn't stop fighting.

  259. You and I

  260. might need to surrender something

  261. today.

  262. Today

  263. is the day

  264. of surrender.

  265. Throughout our history,

  266. surrender has never been looked at

  267. as a good thing.

  268. Surrender has always been failure.

  269. But oftentimes in life,

  270. especially the Christian life,

  271. surrender is not failure.

  272. Surrender is victory.

  273. Surrender is wisdom.

  274. Surrender is giving up

  275. to someone greater than you

  276. who in his goodness,

  277. in his righteousness,

  278. in his justice,

  279. and his grace and mercy

  280. says,

  281. I want to help you win

  282. the victory

  283. that you can't win yourself,

  284. but you've got to stop fighting me.

  285. I surrender all.

  286. I read this quote,

  287. choosing joy

  288. involves spiritual surrender

  289. and sometimes

  290. we would rather

  291. hold on to the pain

  292. than surrender

  293. our own egos.

  294. Isn't that true?

  295. We found ourselves there

  296. probably more times

  297. than we'd care to admit,

  298. but the truth is

  299. sometimes our ego

  300. just won't allow us

  301. to let go

  302. and let God.

  303. Now let go

  304. and let God

  305. is not in the Bible,

  306. but the concept

  307. of giving up control

  308. to God

  309. is absolutely there.

  310. And sometimes

  311. we fight,

  312. fight,

  313. fight

  314. to do it our own way.

  315. We'll justify it.

  316. We'll try to twist

  317. a verse of Scripture

  318. to fit what we want to do,

  319. but in reality,

  320. we know we're fighting

  321. against God Himself.

  322. And He says,

  323. just surrender.

  324. Spiritually surrender

  325. to me.

  326. And then you'll find

  327. that joy.

  328. You'll find that release.

  329. You'll find that freedom.

  330. And ironically,

  331. you'll win the victory

  332. that God so badly

  333. wants for you.

  334. One of the great heroes

  335. of our Christian faith,

  336. founder of the Salvation Army,

  337. William Booth,

  338. said,

  339. the greatness

  340. of a man's power

  341. is the measure

  342. of his surrender.

  343. Now if you went

  344. and polled the men

  345. of Clay County,

  346. I don't know

  347. how many times

  348. we would get that answer,

  349. right?

  350. What's the measure

  351. of a man's power?

  352. You'd find all sorts

  353. of answers,

  354. but probably not that one.

  355. But I believe

  356. that is absolutely true.

  357. And it's biblical.

  358. How much you and I,

  359. especially talking

  360. to you men right now,

  361. how much we surrender

  362. and bow before God

  363. and humble ourselves

  364. and admit

  365. that we are not enough

  366. to our God,

  367. then He can make us

  368. enough.

  369. Then He can remind us

  370. that He is enough.

  371. That His Spirit

  372. can lift us

  373. where we can't go.

  374. His Spirit

  375. can save a relationship

  376. that we can't seem

  377. to save.

  378. His Spirit

  379. can help us

  380. be the parents,

  381. the fathers,

  382. the dads

  383. that we can't figure out

  384. how to be.

  385. So the greatness

  386. of a man's power

  387. is the measure

  388. of his surrender

  389. to God.

  390. Let's look at Romans 12,

  391. 1 and 2.

  392. We're ending our series

  393. kind of with the verse

  394. that we've been going back

  395. to time and time again

  396. throughout this.

  397. And it's our text

  398. for today.

  399. Romans 12,

    Romans 12:1

  400. verses 1 and 2.

  401. Would you join me

  402. in standing

  403. if you're able to?

  404. If you need to keep

  405. your seat,

  406. that's fine.

  407. But Romans 12,

  408. 1 and 2,

  409. if you're able,

  410. let's join together

  411. and read this.

  412. You follow along

  413. as I read.

  414. I'm reading

  415. from the New Living Translation.

  416. And so,

  417. dear brothers and sisters,

  418. I plead with you

  419. to give your bodies

  420. to God.

  421. That's surrender

  422. right there,

  423. isn't it?

  424. Because of all

  425. he has done

  426. for you.

  427. Let them be a living

  428. and holy sacrifice.

  429. Don't miss that word.

  430. The kind he will find

  431. acceptable.

  432. This is truly

  433. the way to worship him.

  434. Don't copy the behavior

  435. and customs

  436. of this world.

  437. But let God

  438. transform you

  439. into a new person.

  440. Talked about that

  441. last week.

  442. By changing

  443. the way you think.

  444. Then you will learn

  445. to know

  446. God's will for you,

  447. which is good

  448. and pleasing

  449. and perfect.

  450. Let's pray together.

  451. God, I pray that you

  452. would show us

  453. how to surrender,

  454. how to sacrifice,

  455. what it means today

  456. and give men

  457. and women

  458. and children

  459. in this room

  460. the boldness

  461. to come forward

  462. and lay something

  463. down

  464. in Jesus' name.

  465. We'll give you

  466. the glory.

  467. And it's in your name

  468. we pray.

  469. Amen.

  470. You may be seated.

  471. Thank you for standing.

  472. A living sacrifice.

  473. In your bulletins,

  474. if you're filling in

  475. the blanks there,

  476. that is our first blank.

  477. A living sacrifice.

  478. This is what it comes

  479. down to for you

  480. and me.

  481. A long time ago,

  482. we're not going to

  483. spend a whole bunch

  484. of time on this,

  485. but God instituted

  486. animal sacrifices

  487. to cover the payment

  488. for the sin

  489. of his people

  490. many years ago.

  491. Now that did not

  492. truly atone

  493. for their sin.

  494. That was simply

  495. looking forward

  496. to the one final

  497. atonement,

  498. which was the blood

  499. of his son,

  500. Jesus,

  501. the spotless

  502. lamb of God.

  503. So they would take

  504. a spotless lamb

  505. without blemish

  506. years ago

  507. and they would

  508. kill it

  509. to pay for the sin

  510. of all the people.

  511. The priest would do this.

  512. Well now,

  513. since Jesus died,

  514. no more sacrifices

  515. have to be made.

  516. He was the one sacrifice

  517. for all those

  518. who came before,

  519. all who were alive then,

  520. and all of us

  521. who have come after.

  522. He is the atonement

  523. or the sacrifice,

  524. the substitutionary

  525. replacement

  526. covering for

  527. our sin.

  528. So God is not asking

  529. for a dying sacrifice

  530. today.

  531. God is asking

  532. for a living sacrifice.

  533. Just like Jesus

  534. laid down his life

  535. unto death,

  536. God is simply asking

  537. you and me

  538. to lay down

  539. our lives

  540. as a sacrifice

  541. for him

  542. and say,

  543. God,

  544. my life is yours

  545. to control.

  546. I give you

  547. my body and soul.

  548. Do what you want

  549. with my life.

  550. That is the secret

  551. to victory.

  552. It is surrender

  553. through sacrifice.

  554. So,

  555. there are notes

  556. about this sacrifice

  557. right here

  558. in Romans 12.

  559. Give your bodies

  560. to God

  561. because of all

  562. he's done for you.

  563. Let him be a living

  564. and holy sacrifice,

  565. the kind

  566. that he will find

  567. acceptable.

  568. This is truly

  569. the way

  570. to worship him.

  571. So,

  572. I want to draw

  573. these key words

  574. from that verse

  575. to your attention.

  576. Acceptable

  577. to God.

  578. See,

  579. back in Genesis 4,

  580. Cain made

  581. a sacrifice.

  582. Y'all remember

  583. Adam and Eve

  584. and their sons,

  585. Cain and Abel,

  586. and Cain and Abel

  587. just couldn't get along,

  588. could they?

  589. Why was that?

  590. Because Cain

  591. wanted to do

  592. what God wanted

  593. his own way.

  594. Abel

  595. decided to do

  596. what God wanted

  597. the way God

  598. wanted it done.

  599. And so,

  600. Abel brought

  601. a sacrifice

  602. to God

  603. of the animal,

  604. exactly what

  605. God had asked for.

  606. Cain

  607. made up

  608. his own plan

  609. to sacrifice

  610. to God.

  611. Now,

  612. he certainly did.

  613. He didn't run away

  614. and say,

  615. forget God,

  616. I'm not going

  617. to sacrifice

  618. to him.

  619. No,

  620. he absolutely

  621. brought

  622. what appeared

  623. to be

  624. a sincere

  625. offering

  626. to God

  627. of his fruits

  628. and vegetables

  629. and all

  630. that he had

  631. labored

  632. and he brought

  633. it to God.

  634. But it wasn't

  635. acceptable to God

  636. because it wasn't

  637. what God

  638. had asked for.

  639. Church people,

  640. please listen to me.

  641. Church people,

  642. non-church people,

  643. whoever's in here

  644. right now,

  645. so many times

  646. we find ourselves

  647. doing things

  648. for God

  649. that God,

  650. got to be careful,

  651. doing things

  652. for God

  653. that God

  654. never wanted.

  655. We try

  656. to please

  657. God

  658. our way.

  659. God

  660. is very,

  661. very plain

  662. on how

  663. to please

  664. him.

  665. He's very,

  666. very plain

  667. on what

  668. the church

  669. should be.

  670. And often

  671. times,

  672. the church

  673. is not

  674. making the

  675. difference

  676. in the world,

  677. it's not

  678. being a light

  679. in the darkness

  680. because we're

  681. doing all the

  682. things that

  683. we think

  684. a church

  685. should do,

  686. not what

  687. the scripture

  688. tells us

  689. God wants

  690. the church

  691. to do.

  692. And God

  693. founded the

  694. church

  695. to do.

  696. I thank

  697. God

  698. that we're

  699. seeing

  700. fruits

  701. of the

  702. labors

  703. of this

  704. church

  705. through parents

  706. raising their

  707. kids

  708. to love

  709. and follow

  710. Jesus.

  711. Through

  712. children's workers,

  713. Sunday school

  714. class teachers,

  715. our children's

  716. minister,

  717. all throughout

  718. this church,

  719. people are

  720. working together

  721. to help

  722. instruct our

  723. younger generations

  724. of God's

  725. goodness,

  726. His salvation,

  727. His grace

  728. that's available

  729. for them.

  730. And as they

  731. come to this

  732. understanding,

  733. God opens

  734. their eyes,

  735. and we've been

  736. seeing them

  737. making the

  738. decision to

  739. follow Jesus

  740. for themselves,

  741. and then they

  742. come up here

  743. and they testify

  744. it through

  745. baptism.

  746. That is what

  747. the church

  748. is called

  749. to do.

  750. The church

  751. is called

  752. to fulfill

  753. two commands.

  754. The great

  755. commission,

  756. which is go

  757. out everywhere

  758. and teach

  759. the gospel

  760. of Jesus

  761. to everyone

  762. who will

  763. listen,

  764. and then

  765. secondly,

  766. the great

  767. commandment,

  768. which is to

  769. love one

  770. another as

  771. God loved

  772. us.

  773. Those are

  774. the missions

  775. for the

  776. church.

  777. Those are

  778. the two

  779. things that

  780. God wants

  781. us to do.

  782. Sometimes,

  783. often,

  784. our church

  785. is no

  786. exception,

  787. those are

  788. the two

  789. things that

  790. churches find

  791. themselves doing

  792. the least.

  793. We'll do

  794. all kinds

  795. of other

  796. things.

  797. We'll have

  798. all sorts

  799. of committees.

  800. I'm not

  801. bashing

  802. committees.

  803. They can

  804. be valuable.

  805. We'll have

  806. all sorts

  807. of structure.

  808. We'll have

  809. all sorts

  810. of pageants

  811. and decorations,

  812. and we'll

  813. do all the

  814. things that

  815. we equate

  816. with church.

  817. In a reality,

  818. those things

  819. were always

  820. meant to

  821. enhance the

  822. mission,

  823. and not

  824. distract

  825. from it.

  826. So,

  827. is our

  828. sacrifice

  829. for God

  830. acceptable

  831. to Him?

  832. Or are we

  833. going to be

  834. like those

  835. who stand

  836. before God

  837. someday and

  838. say,

  839. God,

  840. I did all

  841. this in

  842. your name.

  843. I did all

  844. these things.

  845. Look at

  846. this.

  847. I kept

  848. a list.

  849. Look at

  850. all these

  851. things I

  852. did for

  853. you.

  854. And heaven

  855. forbid,

  856. God look at

  857. us and say,

  858. I never

  859. knew you.

  860. Or at

  861. the very

  862. least,

  863. do you

  864. look at

  865. us and

  866. say,

  867. it's not

  868. what I

  869. told you

  870. to do.

  871. It's not

  872. what I

  873. gave you

  874. to complete.

  875. That was

  876. never the

  877. task.

  878. The task

  879. was love

  880. your neighbor.

  881. The task

  882. was tell

  883. others about

  884. the only

  885. way of

  886. salvation.

  887. That is

  888. how we

  889. truly

  890. worship

  891. Him.

  892. We can

  893. come and

  894. sing the

  895. songs.

  896. We can

  897. set our

  898. radios in

  899. our car

  900. to Christian

  901. radio.

  902. We can

  903. worship Him

  904. on the

  905. surface as

  906. much as we

  907. possibly can,

  908. as often as

  909. we possibly

  910. can.

  911. However,

  912. John 4

  913. will not

  914. go away.

  915. John 4

  916. is still in

  917. the Bible and

  918. it says,

  919. true worshipers

  920. will worship

  921. the Father in

  922. spirit and

  923. in truth.

  924. The Father

  925. is looking

  926. for those

  927. who will

  928. worship Him

  929. that way.

  930. You know

  931. why He's

  932. looking?

  933. Because

  934. they're hard

  935. to find.

  936. True

  937. worshipers

  938. are hard

  939. to find.

  940. Y'all look

  941. around this

  942. church.

  943. So many

  944. of us

  945. struggle

  946. with true

  947. worship.

  948. What is

  949. true worship?

  950. God is

  951. spirit.

  952. So those

  953. that worship

  954. Him must

  955. worship Him

  956. in spirit

  957. and in

  958. truth.

  959. Spirit

  960. and in

  961. truth.

  962. What are

  963. we talking

  964. about when

  965. we say

  966. spirit and

  967. in truth?

  968. Worshiping

  969. God in

  970. spirit and

  971. in truth

  972. involves

  973. giving the

  974. heart over

  975. to God's

  976. spirit and

  977. then letting

  978. the light of

  979. His truth

  980. shine in the

  981. dark places

  982. of our life.

  983. That is

  984. worshiping in

  985. spirit and

  986. in truth.

  987. Spirit deals

  988. with the

  989. heart.

  990. And then

  991. light deals

  992. with truth.

  993. The truth of

  994. God's word will

  995. expose what's

  996. wrong with us.

  997. What we're

  998. doing wrong.

  999. That might mean

  1000. you need to quit

  1001. going out and

  1002. getting drunk.

  1003. that might mean

  1004. you need to quit

  1005. running around

  1006. on your wife.

  1007. That might mean

  1008. you need to get

  1009. off social media.

  1010. Or it might mean

  1011. you need to stop

  1012. being so grouchy.

  1013. It might mean

  1014. you need to stop

  1015. giving in to fear

  1016. so much and

  1017. rest in God's

  1018. power and His

  1019. goodness.

  1020. Whatever it is,

  1021. the light of

  1022. God's truth will

  1023. reveal the dark

  1024. places in us

  1025. that He wants

  1026. to change.

  1027. And when we

  1028. turn that over

  1029. to Him,

  1030. when we shine

  1031. the light,

  1032. that is worship.

  1033. That is an act

  1034. of worship.

  1035. Saying,

  1036. God, I know

  1037. that I am not

  1038. there yet.

  1039. I know that

  1040. you're training

  1041. me.

  1042. So shine the

  1043. light in and

  1044. show me what

  1045. I need to

  1046. change.

  1047. What needs to

  1048. change in me.

  1049. So,

  1050. acceptable to

  1051. God,

  1052. that's our

  1053. true worship.

  1054. Number two,

  1055. a new person.

  1056. a living

  1057. sacrifice and

  1058. a new person.

  1059. Verse two

  1060. of Romans

  1061. 12.

  1062. Don't copy the

  1063. behavior and

  1064. customs of this

  1065. world, but let

  1066. God transform you

  1067. into a new

  1068. person by changing

  1069. the way you

  1070. think.

  1071. Y'all, do you

  1072. think that maybe

  1073. it's time for a

  1074. new you?

  1075. Maybe we should

  1076. ask your spouse

  1077. that question.

  1078. Ask your kids

  1079. that question.

  1080. Ask your friends

  1081. or coworkers

  1082. or boss

  1083. or employees

  1084. that question.

  1085. Maybe it's time

  1086. for a new you.

  1087. Maybe a less

  1088. selfish, maybe

  1089. less self-absorbed,

  1090. self-centered you.

  1091. Maybe God wants

  1092. you, he wants to

  1093. train you

  1094. to fit his plan

  1095. instead of you

  1096. trying to fit him

  1097. into yours.

  1098. God can change

  1099. you.

  1100. He's changed

  1101. way harder

  1102. cases than

  1103. you.

  1104. Case in point,

  1105. me.

  1106. God's changed

  1107. me and if he

  1108. can change me,

  1109. he can change

  1110. you too.

  1111. What does this

  1112. look like?

  1113. God's will

  1114. versus the

  1115. world's way.

  1116. That's described

  1117. right here in

  1118. Romans 12.

  1119. Don't copy the

  1120. behavior and

  1121. customs of this

  1122. world.

  1123. Now we do

  1124. that and maybe

  1125. that's going out

  1126. and just living

  1127. for yourself

  1128. and living all

  1129. wild and crazy

  1130. and you're the

  1131. talk of the

  1132. town because

  1133. you're such a

  1134. mess.

  1135. But more likely

  1136. it's not that

  1137. extreme.

  1138. More likely

  1139. it's internal

  1140. as opposed to

  1141. external.

  1142. What are we

  1143. talking about?

  1144. Sometimes

  1145. worldliness is

  1146. more inside,

  1147. hidden,

  1148. but the fruit

  1149. of it comes

  1150. out.

  1151. You might look

  1152. like you're all

  1153. cleaned up,

  1154. buttoned up,

  1155. you got it all

  1156. together and

  1157. you're a Jesus

  1158. person, you

  1159. know?

  1160. You're one of

  1161. them church

  1162. people.

  1163. You might look

  1164. like that, but

  1165. the reality is

  1166. you and I are

  1167. rotten to the

  1168. core.

  1169. The encouraging

  1170. message you came

  1171. to church to hear

  1172. today.

  1173. You're rotten to

  1174. the core and so

  1175. am I.

  1176. In our flesh there

  1177. is no good

  1178. thing.

  1179. The only good

  1180. that is in us

  1181. comes from our

  1182. Father.

  1183. So the closer

  1184. we fly to the

  1185. sun, the more

  1186. of his light we

  1187. reflect.

  1188. The closer we

  1189. walk with Jesus,

  1190. the more closely

  1191. to his will we

  1192. find ourselves.

  1193. So, Proverbs

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  1194. chapter 3.

  1195. My dad drilled

  1196. this verse into

  1197. me growing up.

  1198. My dad was a

  1199. pastor and this

  1200. was a verse that

  1201. he would just not

  1202. stop with over

  1203. and over again.

  1204. Trust in the

  1205. Lord with all

  1206. your heart.

  1207. Do not lean on

  1208. your own

  1209. understanding.

  1210. In all your

  1211. ways acknowledge

  1212. him and he will

  1213. direct or make

  1214. straight your

  1215. paths.

  1216. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  1217. 29 and verse

  1218. 11.

  1219. I know the

  1220. plans I have

  1221. for you declares

  1222. the Lord.

  1223. Plans to prosper

  1224. you, not to

  1225. harm you.

  1226. Plans to give

  1227. you hope and a

  1228. future.

  1229. So, if you

  1230. trusted the Lord

  1231. with all your

  1232. heart, if you

  1233. acknowledge him

  1234. and you don't

  1235. lean on your

  1236. own understanding

  1237. of things, then

  1238. he will make

  1239. your paths

  1240. straight.

  1241. He will prosper

  1242. you, not harm

  1243. you.

  1244. He will give

  1245. you a hope and

  1246. a future.

  1247. That is God's

  1248. will versus the

  1249. world's way.

  1250. The world's way

  1251. never ends in a

  1252. straight path.

  1253. The world's way

  1254. never ends in

  1255. hope and a

  1256. future.

  1257. The world's way

  1258. always ends in

  1259. destruction.

  1260. It always ends

  1261. in grief.

  1262. It always ends

  1263. in heartbreak,

  1264. dissatisfaction,

  1265. bitterness.

  1266. God's will

  1267. always ends in

  1268. prosperity, hope,

  1269. and a future.

  1270. That doesn't

  1271. mean your bank

  1272. account's going

  1273. to look as

  1274. prosperous as you

  1275. want it to

  1276. look.

  1277. It means your

  1278. heart will be

  1279. filled with the

  1280. joy of God.

  1281. That's the

  1282. prosperity we're

  1283. talking about.

  1284. That's the

  1285. fulfillment that

  1286. nothing will be

  1287. able to rattle

  1288. you.

  1289. Nothing will be

  1290. able to come

  1291. between you and

  1292. God.

  1293. You might

  1294. experience sadness.

  1295. You might

  1296. experience grief.

  1297. You might

  1298. experience tears.

  1299. But Jesus

  1300. wipes those tears

  1301. away.

  1302. Joy comes in the

  1303. morning.

  1304. joy comes in the

  1305. world.

  1306. So, that's the

  1307. joy.

  1308. Let's turn over to

  1309. Luke chapter 9 and

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1310. we'll be done.

1311. For sake of time, I'm

1312. going to go ahead and

  1313. read.

  1314. Luke 9 and verse 23.

  1315. Jesus is speaking to

  1316. the crowd.

1317. He says, if any of

1318. you wants to be my

  1319. follower, just imagine

1320. him up here speaking to

  1321. this crowd today.

  1322. It's Father's Day.

  1323. we've got a good

  1324. crowd here.

  1325. Jesus is standing up

1326. here in place of me.

  1327. How great would that

  1328. be?

1329. And he says, if any

  1330. of you, First Baptist

  1331. Henrietta, whoever

1332. else is in the room

1333. today, if any of you

  1334. wants to be my

  1335. follower, you must turn

  1336. from your selfish

  1337. ways.

  1338. And you're looking at

  1339. my selfish ways?

  1340. You don't know me

  1341. very well.

1342. Oh, I dare say he

  1343. does.

  1344. You must turn from

  1345. your selfish ways,

  1346. Sam Bunnell.

  1347. Take up your cross

  1348. daily.

  1349. It wasn't just enough

1350. for me to take up my

  1351. cross and say, okay,

1352. God, you want me to be

  1353. a pastor?

  1354. I'll be a pastor.

1355. There, I took up my

  1356. cross.

1357. I've got to take up my

  1358. cross every day.

  1359. So do you.

  1360. Take up our cross

  1361. daily and follow him.

1362. What does it mean to

  1363. take up your cross?

1364. It means be willing to

  1365. endure whatever comes

  1366. your way just like

  1367. Jesus did on that

  1368. cross.

  1369. It means understanding

  1370. it's not always going

  1371. to be easy.

1372. There is going to be

  1373. hardship.

1374. But he said, take up

  1375. that cross daily and

1376. you'll be able to make

  1377. it through whatever I

1378. have for you and trust

1379. me, it's going to be

  1380. worth it all.

1381. Verse 24, because if you

1382. try to hang on to your

  1383. life, if you're not

  1384. willing to surrender,

  1385. you're not willing to

  1386. sacrifice, you're going

  1387. to lose it.

1388. But if you give up, if

1389. you give up your life

1390. for my sake, you'll save

  1391. it.

1392. Jesus said if you give

1393. up your life for his

  1394. sake, you'll find new

  1395. life.

  1396. You'll find better life.

  1397. You'll find that salvation.

  1398. salvation.

  1399. First, that means salvation

  1400. from your sins.

1401. But then after that day,

1402. it means finding that new

  1403. salvation in God that

1404. saves you from who you

  1405. will be without God.

  1406. Every day, we've got a

  1407. choice.

1408. Am I going to take up my

  1409. cross?

1410. Am I going to surrender

  1411. and sacrifice?

  1412. And then where's God

  1413. going to lead me?

  1414. Down that path today.

1415. Or am I going to run on

  1416. the much wider, much

  1417. more populated path with

  1418. everybody else out trying

  1419. to live for themselves?

1420. Too often, you and I as

  1421. followers of Jesus find

  1422. ourselves on the wrong

1423. path and Jesus is always

  1424. calling us back.

1425. He's saying, no, no, no.

1426. You left your cross over

  1427. here.

1428. Go pick up your cross and

1429. get back on that narrow

  1430. way because God has

  1431. something great for you,

  1432. for this church.

1433. So, it's better to lose

1434. your life than to waste

  1435. it.

1436. John Piper, one of the

  1437. great pastors that our

  1438. country has right now,

1439. says it's better to lose

1440. your life than to waste

  1441. it.

1442. He even wrote this book

  1443. called Don't Waste

  1444. Your Life.

1445. It's so much better to

1446. lose your life for Jesus

1447. sake than to waste it on

1448. the pursuits of this world.

1449. Let's read it one final

  1450. time.

1451. Can we read it together?

  1452. Father, don't copy the

  1453. behavior and customs of

1454. this world, but let God

1455. transform you into a new

1456. person by changing the way

  1457. you think.

1458. Then you will learn to know

1459. God's will for you, which is

  1460. good and pleasing and

  1461. perfect.

1462. Now, this time, I'm going to

1463. have us read this verse

  1464. second.

1465. Dear brothers and sisters, I

1466. plead with you to give, let's

  1467. pause, up.

1468. I put that in parentheses

1469. there because up is not in

  1470. the text.

1471. So I looked up the Greek

1472. word for, you know, the

1473. Bible, the New Testament was

  1474. originally written in

1475. Greek, so I look back at

  1476. that Greek word.

1477. What's it talking about when

1478. it says give, or your

  1479. Bible might say present?

  1480. It's talking about giving

  1481. an offering, making an

  1482. offering, offering something

1483. up to someone who deserves

  1484. it.

1485. So I just took the liberty of

  1486. putting that in, saying

  1487. that's me, that's not the

  1488. Bible, but I think it's

  1489. consistent with what the

1490. message is trying to tell

  1491. us.

1492. I plead with you to give up

  1493. your bodies.

  1494. Give up yourselves.

1495. Give up your bank account

1496. to God and quit being so

  1497. stingy.

1498. Let God pass that money on

  1499. to bless somebody else.

1500. Quit being so stingy with

1501. your time, your energy, and

1502. let God use the breath that

1503. he gives you to bless

1504. somebody else and further his

  1505. kingdom on this earth.

1506. Give up, fill in the blank.

1507. Give up, fill in the blank.

  1508. Surrender, sacrifice it to

1509. God because of all he's done

  1510. for you.

1511. Let these things be a living

1512. and holy sacrifice, the kind

  1513. he will find acceptable.

1514. This is the way to worship God.

1515. So here's our takeaway for

  1516. today.

1517. God, teach me the joy of

  1518. surrender and sacrifice.

1519. God, teach me the joy of

  1520. surrender and sacrifice.

1521. Y'all, would you bow your

  1522. heads with me?

1523. I'm going to challenge you to

  1524. do something today.

1525. I'm not always going to push

1526. this hard, but today I

  1527. believe it's appropriate.

1528. If we have the front of this

1529. room filled with families who

1530. are praying for God to show

1531. them how to surrender and

  1532. sacrifice.

1533. Men, I'm going to challenge you

1534. on Father's Day to lead your

  1535. sons, daughters, even your

1536. wives down to the front and

1537. kneel down here before God

1538. and just say, God, I

1539. surrender and then you fill in

  1540. the blank.

1541. God, I sacrifice, then you

  1542. fill in the blank.

1543. A long time ago, God asked

  1544. Abraham to sacrifice Isaac.

1545. Of course, he didn't take

1546. Isaac's life, but he wanted to

1547. show Abraham, are you willing to

1548. give up everything in your

  1549. trust of me?

  1550. I believe that I will take

1551. better care of what you have,

1552. what I've given you, than you

  1553. can.

1554. How's your faith this morning?

1555. Are you willing to give up?

1556. Are you willing to surrender?

1557. Are you willing to sacrifice?

1558. I've got to ask myself that

1559. every day because you and I

  1560. always hold something back.

1561. So God, in this moment right

1562. now, when you've taught us from

1563. your word, God, this isn't the

1564. opinion of Sam Bunnell, this is

1565. the words of God, and I pray

1566. that you would instill those

  1567. deep in us.

1568. I'm going to ask just the organ

1569. to play right now, very

  1570. softly.

  1571. Y'all don't need to sing.

1572. We might join in in a little

1573. bit, but I'm going to sing the

1574. words to this song over you.

  1575. All to Jesus I surrender, I

  1576. surrender all.

1577. All to him I freely give.

1578. I will ever love and trust him.

1579. In his presence I will daily

  1580. live.

1581. Would you take this moment to

  1582. pray?

  1583. And I pray that there's somebody

1584. who would be the first to stand

1585. up and come down here.

  1586. There's nothing special or

1587. magical or holy about kneeling

1588. down here in the front, but I

1589. think getting up and leading

1590. your family down is an act of

1591. worship before God and instills in

1592. our younger generation what it

1593. means to humble yourself and bow

1594. down before God as a family and

  1595. pray.

1596. So I challenge you families

1597. across this room, make use of

1598. this open area at the front of

1599. the room as I begin to sing.

  1600. Thank you.

  1601. Thank you.
