  1. All right, church, we are considering on in our series about life on mission, the ultimate

  2. walk with Christ.

  3. That's a big statement.

  4. Thank you, buddy.

  5. You're doing your job because I'm not doing mine, so got to have that little thing.

  6. There we go.

  7. Yep, it's working.

  8. All right, that's good.

  9. We are going to be in Philippians chapter one, so if you'd like to start making your

  10. way in the Bible over to Philippians one, we'll read from it in just a moment.

  11. But before we get there, let's do a little recap of what we learned last week.

  12. So last week, we talked about a call to minister.

  13. The ultimate walk with Christ, that's kind of a lofty goal, right?

  14. That's setting the bar pretty high.

  15. Say, this is the ultimate walk with Christ.

  16. Well, you better have something pretty strong to back that up with.

  17. Well, I can truly tell you that life on God's mission is the ultimate way to walk with Jesus.

  18. So if we are believing that we're walking with Jesus, but we're not on mission for him,

  19. part of his mission in this world, actively engaging in that mission, then our walk with

  20. Jesus isn't as close as we might think it is.

  21. So last Sunday, we tried to break that down a little bit and said we see a call to minister

  22. in Philippians chapter one, a call to minister.

  23. Our takeaway was, am I willing to go on mission for God by preaching the gospel and by praying

  24. for the lost around me?

  25. When we said a call to minister, we said a call, the call to minister specifically was a call

  26. to preach.

  27. All of you are called to preach.

  28. So anybody else want to come up here and preach this morning?

  29. We're all called to preach.

  30. That doesn't mean God has placed a call on every one of us to get up here on the stage

  31. in a local church and preach the sermon, but we are all called to preach the gospel that

  32. is actively with our mouths and passively through our lifestyle, both and not either or.

  33. We don't get an option of just saying, well, I just try to live nice and that's how people

  34. know I'm a Christian.

  35. Or we don't get the option of saying, well, I'll tell people about Jesus, but I'm not going

  36. to live in a holy way.

  37. We have to do both.

  38. And we preach the gospel both actively and passively.

  39. And that is our call to minister.

  40. We also have the call to pray.

  41. And that's specifically about praying for the lost, praying for those without God.

  42. That is something God commanded us to do, urged us to do time and time again.

  43. And it makes a difference.

  44. When we pray, when God, when God's children pray, God shows up.

  45. God works.

  46. God acts.

  47. We can move the hand of God through prayer.

  48. So our call to minister is a call to preach the gospel and pray for the lost around us.

  49. So let's look at today.

  50. You never know what pictures you're going to see on the screen when you come to church.

  51. All right.

  52. Now, anybody want to guess who is the guy in the lower left hand corner?

  53. Y'all can do better than that.

  54. Michael Jordan.

  55. He hadn't been played in years and we still know who he is.

  56. How about the guy in the lower right hand corner?

  57. Kobe Bryant.

  58. We heard some more younger voices in there.

  59. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

  60. Two of the greatest basketball players who ever lived.

  61. Now, who is the tall guy in the middle?

  62. What's that?

  63. Phil Jackson.

  64. I heard some older male voices saying that.

  65. Not being discriminatory, I guarantee you there were some women in here who knew who that was too.

  66. But, you know, you're starting to get a little more niche in your basketball knowledge when you know who the guy in the middle is.

  67. He was the what for both of those guys?

  68. He was the coach, right?

  69. Phil Jackson is the most championship winningest coach that there ever was.

  70. He holds the most NBA championships as a head coach of anybody else.

  71. How many does he have?

  72. Anybody?

  73. Very close.

  74. 11.

  75. Somebody said 10.

  76. He has 11.

  77. Six of them.

  78. He won with Michael Jordan and the Bulls.

  79. And five of them he won with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

  80. So, the guy could take superstars and he could turn those teams into championship winning teams time and time and time and time again.

  81. So, Phil Jackson knows something about bringing a team together.

  82. Because you know what the funny thing is?

  83. There have been a lot of superstars in the history of the NBA and all these other sports.

  84. And you know what they haven't all done?

  85. They haven't all won championships.

  86. And very few of them have won multiple championships.

  87. So, how did Phil Jackson take a team of stars, maybe one big star, one or two big stars, and then just a bunch of other guys who weren't stars,

  88. and build a team that it was really, really hard to beat.

  89. And year after year, they would win it all.

  90. He said, he taught the principle, give up the me for the we.

  91. Give up the me for the we.

  92. It's nice and cute.

  93. You can remember that.

  94. It'll stick in your head.

  95. But what does it mean?

  96. Well, he said this.

  97. The strength of the team is each individual member.

  98. The strength of each member is the team.

  99. Michael Jordan was great.

  100. How many of y'all remember watching Michael Jordan play basketball?

  101. Now, we can have a LeBron discussion at another time.

  102. But if y'all are right with God, then you know Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player who ever lived.

  103. All right?

  104. Thank you.

  105. I don't want to hear from you young people down here, all right?

  106. Just kidding.

  107. It's LeBron, man.

  108. And if there's anybody else's name, you just don't know what you're talking about.

  109. You can take these guys who seem to be one-man teams.

  110. They are transcendent athletes.

  111. You can take these.

  112. We're watching the Olympics right now.

  113. And if you've watched any of that, you know, you've seen some incredible individual performances as they win their gold medal,

  114. sometimes blowing away the field.

  115. You watch Katie Ledecky in the pool and she's just, you know, there's nobody even on the screen with her as you watch her winning.

  116. It's like, wow, how is she so much better than everybody else?

  117. But when you're playing team sports, even a guy like Michael Jordan, who is as close as probably will ever come to saying he was the greatest who ever lived in his field,

  118. even he could not win the championship by himself.

  119. He needed the team.

  120. He never won a championship until Phil Jackson came on board and brought his philosophy of the strength of each member is the team.

  121. The strength of Michael Jordan was the team around him.

  122. Was he the best player?

  123. Undisputably.

  124. But he couldn't have done it without the team.

  125. He needed his partners.

  126. He needed the partnerships.

  127. And that's what we're going to talk about today is a call to partner.

  128. So last Sunday, we talked about a call to minister.

  129. Today, we're talking about a call to partner.

  130. Let's look back at Philippians chapter one.

  131. Philippians chapter one.

  132. If you are able to join us in standing, would you do it one more time?

  133. I know it feels like we've been up and down a little bit during the service, but we're just trying to wake you up and get you some exercise.

  134. All right.

  135. In Philippians chapter one, let's look down in verse three.

  136. Philippians one in verse three.

  137. I'm reading from the Christian Standard Bible.

  138. I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you.

  139. Skip down to verse five.

  140. Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it out, carry it on.

  141. So to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

  142. Verse seven.

  143. Indeed, it is right for me to think of this way about all of you because I have you in my heart and you are all.

  144. What's that word?

  145. Partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.

  146. Would you pray with me?

  147. God, I pray that you would show us what it means to be partners in the gospel.

  148. What it means to be partners together with you and your mission in this world.

  149. Give us wisdom from your word today.

  150. In Jesus name we pray.

  151. Amen.

  152. You may be seated.

  153. Thanks for standing.

  154. We're going to talk about two different kinds of partnerships, two different ways to partner with God and his mission and our local church.

  155. All right.

  156. So let's clear that up real quick.

  157. We have God.

  158. We have his kingdom or his mission on this earth.

  159. He is building his kingdom through his mission on this earth.

  160. And then we have his chosen tools.

  161. The things he's using to build his mission and his kingdom on this earth.

  162. And that's you and me.

  163. That's us.

  164. Okay.

  165. And he has organized us into churches around this world.

  166. I've had the opportunity and advantage of traveling all over this globe.

  167. Been in different continents in Asia and Europe and Central America, South America, different places.

  168. And I have seen churches, different, way different kinds of churches from each other.

  169. But they're all doing the same thing.

  170. They're all trying to advance the mission of God, build the kingdom of God with the word of God, by the power of God.

  171. Okay.

  172. So that's what they're all trying to do.

  173. It's the same thing.

  174. Their music might sound different.

  175. The way the pastor dresses might be different.

  176. The buildings in which they meet, if they have a building, might look different.

  177. The color of the people sitting there might look different.

  178. The language they're speaking might sound different.

  179. But they're all preaching the same Jesus, the same message, with the same mission.

  180. So we are partners in this mission.

  181. So what does it look like to be a good partner?

  182. Number one, we partner through giving.

  183. We partner through giving.

  184. Paul repeatedly, throughout his letters to the early church, praised people for their financial investment in his ministry.

  185. He told them that is how God set it up.

  186. To support what God is doing on this earth through God's people, through God's church.

  187. So how do we partner financially?

  188. I don't know why that.

  189. Yeah, that's weird how that ended up.

  190. But y'all just forgive me on that.

  191. Okay.

  192. Got the financial and then the colon underneath it.

  193. Wasn't supposed to look like that.

  194. That's okay.

  195. All right.

  196. So we get past that.

  197. We'll look at the actual ways.

  198. Very practical ways.

  199. How do we partner through giving to First Baptist Henrietta?

  200. That's our church, right?

  201. We tithe.

  202. In the Bible, the tithe meant 10%.

  203. We are in the New Testament age.

  204. If you want to continue that on, I do that with my family.

  205. We try to give 10% of our income to the ministry of this church back to God, right?

  206. If God leads you to do a different number, that's up to you.

  207. But it's setting aside before anything else.

  208. It's setting aside a portion of what God has given you to give back to him.

  209. Before we spend it on ourselves or anything else, we say, I'm going to give my first fruits,

  210. the Bible uses that term, back to God.

  211. So that's what I call the tithe.

  212. That's what the Bible calls the tithe.

  213. Offerings.

  214. Offerings would be something above and beyond that.

  215. We have our Texas offering that we support here in Texas.

  216. Our Mary Hill Davis.

  217. I couldn't remember the name.

  218. But we have the Mary Hill Davis offering that supports missions across the state of Texas.

  219. We have the Annie Armstrong offering that supports missions in North America, right here in our home country.

  220. And we have the Lottie Moon offering that we give around Christmastime that supports missions going on all around the world.

  221. Those are all names for great women of faith that God used mightily in the area of missions.

  222. So these are additional to our regular tithe.

  223. We have opportunities to give offerings.

  224. Now you don't have to wait for those three times a year to give something extra to God.

  225. God can work in your heart and move you to say, you know what?

  226. There's a cause right now that God has placed dear on my heart.

  227. I'm going to give a little bit extra to that, to see that happen.

  228. And we'll talk about why in just a moment.

  229. But that's another way to invest financially, partner financially in what God's doing.

  230. Of course, we pass the plate on Sundays, right?

  231. There are people who still put money into the offering plate.

  232. And we're grateful for that.

  233. And God will bless you for that.

  234. Then we give, personally I give through the church app.

  235. That's a really handy way for me.

  236. Got my bank account linked to it.

  237. And I can just push those buttons and give right to the church through the app.

  238. There's a way to do that.

  239. There's another link on the church website when you go on there.

  240. So if you're not sure how to give, there's all these different ways to do that.

  241. There's also a couple of drop boxes, one in the lobby and then one back by the back entrance.

  242. So those are just very practical ways to partner with our church financially.

  243. But let's get to the why.

  244. Let's get to the why.

  245. Number one.

  246. Number one.

  247. This is the principle.

  248. These three principles that can help guide.

  249. Why should I give financially to God?

  250. Because you need to.

  251. God doesn't need it.

  252. But you do.

  253. God doesn't need my 10% of my income every month.

  254. But I need to give it to God.

  255. So that's why I wrote down, God doesn't need my money.

  256. But I need to give it to him.

  257. Oswald Chambers wrote one of the great devotionals that's ever been written on this earth.

  258. Morning and evening.

  259. I'm sorry.

  260. My utmost for his highest.

  261. It's one of the great, great books.

  262. And a lot of people turn it into devotional reading.

  263. He said, worship is giving God the best that he has given you.

  264. Now that should be across the board.

  265. Our emotions.

  266. Our talents.

  267. Whatever God has given us.

  268. But that includes our finances.

  269. We give to God the best that he has given us.

  270. We don't save for him the least.

  271. We give him the best.

  272. God doesn't need my money.

  273. Psalm 50 reminds us that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

  274. All the world is his.

  275. And he even says in Psalm 50 that he wouldn't come to us if he needed anything.

  276. Of course, God doesn't need anything.

  277. But the point he's making is if he had a need, we would not be able to fulfill it.

  278. If he needed a loan, he wouldn't be getting it from us.

  279. If he needed anything materially, he wouldn't be getting it from his created beings.

  280. He owns the world and all that is in it.

  281. God doesn't need our offerings.

  282. God doesn't need our tithe.

  283. But we need to give through worship to God.

  284. And say, God, I recognize that all I have received comes from you.

  285. And I recognize that you have a great and grand mission on this earth.

  286. And I recognize my role, my responsibility in investing in that mission, in being a part of it.

  287. Partnering with you in that mission.

  288. So I'm going to invest in it.

  289. So, worship is giving God the best that he has given you.

  290. God doesn't need my money.

  291. But I need to give it to God.

  292. Then secondly, God blesses a grateful sacrifice.

  293. God blesses a grateful sacrifice.

  294. 2 Samuel 24 teaches us, David wrote,

  295. I will not offer to God offerings that cost me nothing.

  296. Y'all, I think that is an incredible principle to live by.

  297. Something I had to learn as an adult in my own ministry.

  298. God called me to vocational ministry, serving him.

  299. And this wasn't an area that I was strong in.

  300. God had to teach me.

  301. You need to give sacrificially.

  302. Give in a way that costs you something.

  303. Every year when I do my taxes, I look back at all the donations that I gave to the church.

  304. And I think, what are the things I could have done with that money?

  305. Man, we could have gone on a vacation.

  306. We could have invested it.

  307. We could have saved up, built up our savings.

  308. There's all kinds of things that I could have done with the money that I gave back to God.

  309. But then I realize, the investment that I am making in what is eternal, not what is temporary,

  310. what is going to last forever, not what's going to vanish away or break,

  311. that is priceless.

  312. That investment is priceless.

  313. And God promises blessings on us for the sacrifices we make for him.

  314. In his world, that little bit of money that I gave means very little.

  315. In my world, it means a lot.

  316. It's a sacrifice.

  317. It costs me something.

  318. It costs you something when you choose to give.

  319. And I know that.

  320. Our financial committee, our financial staff, we know that it costs you when you give.

  321. We thank God for the sacrifice that you make when you choose to support the ministry of this church and this place.

  322. But more than our appreciation, God promises his blessings.

  323. Because he loves it.

  324. He appreciates it.

  325. It warms his heart.

  326. It fills him with joy.

  327. It puts a smile on his face when his children take their relationship with him so seriously,

  328. they're willing to give something back to him.

  329. Malachi chapter 3 and verse 10.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  330. Would you look at it real quickly with me?

  331. It's the last book of the Old Testament.

  332. You got Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  333. And right before Matthew is Malachi.

  334. Malachi chapter 3 and verse 8.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  335. For sake of time, I'm going to go ahead and read Malachi 3 and verse 8.

  336. Will a man rob God?

  337. Rhetorical question there.

  338. Kind of a deep philosophical question.

  339. Do we rob God sometimes?

  340. Will a man rob God, yet you are robbing me?

  341. This prophet Malachi is writing to God's people Israel.

  342. Will a man rob God, yet you are robbing me?

  343. Well, how do we rob you, you ask?

  344. They're asking back to God through the words of his prophet Malachi.

  345. How do we rob God?

  346. By not making the payments of the tenth.

  347. There's that tithe we talked about.

  348. Back then it was a tenth.

  349. The tenth and the contributions, the offerings on, above, and beyond just the tithe.

  350. Verse 9.

  351. You are suffering under a curse, yet you, the whole nation,

  352. are still robbing me.

  353. How many of you think this world is cursed?

  354. Anybody?

  355. I do.

  356. It's called sin.

  357. The curse is sin.

  358. It's going to destroy it eventually.

  359. Read about that in Revelation.

  360. Yet we still rob God.

  361. Verse 10.

  362. Bring the full tenth into the storehouse,

  363. so that there may be food in my house.

  364. Test me in this way, says the Lord of armies,

  365. and see if I will not open the floodgates of heaven

  366. and pour out a blessing for you without measure.

  367. Now there have been pastors who have read this passage and said,

  368. see, if you give a tenth of your money to me and my ministry,

  369. so I can go get my second private jet,

  370. then God will return that to you tenfold.

  371. If you give $100, he'll give you $1,000.

  372. Well, that was never said.

  373. And if you put those kinds of words in God's mouth,

  374. then you're speaking on God's behalf,

  375. and I would never want to do that except for what he says in his word.

  376. So certainly that can be abused.

  377. But the principle is strong, and it is there,

  378. and it's very applicable for you and for me to say,

  379. if we will set aside sacrificially for God,

  380. then God will bless us for that.

  381. I don't know how he's going to bless you,

  382. but I promise you he will.

  383. It might be in your bank account.

  384. It might be with health.

  385. It might be keeping you from something.

  386. It might be letting your children be reconciled to you.

  387. You never know how God is going to intervene on your behalf,

  388. but when the Lord of armies,

  389. when the God over heaven and earth says,

  390. I will pour out blessings on you,

  391. I want to be under that waterfall, right?

  392. I want to be under that spout where the blessings come out.

  393. You like that?

  394. Get under the spout where the blessings come out.

  395. Probably heard that from somewhere else, but I liked it.

  396. That's where I want to live.

  397. I want to live right there where the blessings come out.

  398. So, we are to give sacrificially,

  399. because that is what God blesses.

  400. God doesn't need our money,

  401. but we need to give it to God.

  402. God blesses a grateful sacrifice.

  403. Don't give in a way that costs you nothing.

  404. Give in a way that costs you something.

  405. Costs you something meaningful.

  406. Give your best to God.

  407. James 1 teaches us that every good thing comes from God.

  408. So, why would we not give back the best to the one who gives us every good thing?

  409. The last reason.

  410. The last reason we partner through giving

  411. is because the Holy Spirit stirs us to give to God's mission.

  412. Apologize for how the slide's cut off there on the bottom.

  413. There's some kind of disconnect between how it looks on my computer

  414. and how it looks on the screen.

  415. So, we're going to figure that out, all right?

  416. Before next Sunday, we'll figure it out.

  417. But if you can bear with me here,

  418. the Holy Spirit stirs me to give to God's mission.

  419. Exodus 36 and 2 Corinthians 9, I believe it is.

  420. Double check on that.

  421. Yep, 2 Corinthians 9 and Exodus 36.

  422. They both show us instances where the Holy Spirit

  423. stirs up someone to partner, to give sacrificially, okay?

  424. I'm reminded of another instance

  425. where there was a woman with a box of expensive perfume

  426. and she came and she didn't, she was a poor woman.

  427. She didn't have much, but she came and broke it

  428. and poured the perfume over Jesus.

  429. She gave it all to him

  430. because the Holy Spirit of God moved her to do that

  431. and that was all she had.

  432. That was the best.

  433. That was everything she could do.

  434. So, she came and gave it to God.

  435. There's the story of the widow, the widow's mites.

  436. Anybody remember that story?

  437. The widow had mites, the two small coins.

  438. She had two small coins and she came and gave it

  439. and Jesus said that is so much more meaningful

  440. than the rich person who gives far much more money

  441. but they're not giving it in a sacrificial way

  442. because this woman was moved by the Spirit of God

  443. to do what she had.

  444. She hath done what she could, the Bible says.

  445. She has done what she could do.

  446. So, our question in giving is

  447. have we done what we could?

  448. Maybe there comes a point

  449. where God wants to move me

  450. from giving 10% of my income

  451. to giving more than 10%

  452. because I could do more.

  453. Maybe God wants to move you

  454. from not giving

  455. to giving something

  456. because you could give something.

  457. This poor, poor woman

  458. gave two coins

  459. because that's all she could do

  460. and God said

  461. she will be blessed for that.

  462. That is meaningful.

  463. That is sacrifice.

  464. God looks on the heart.

  465. Man looks on the outward appearance

  466. and the outward appearance

  467. means very little to God.

  468. It's the heart that matters

  469. because usually from the heart

  470. is what eventually will come out.

  471. What's on the inside

  472. will come out on the outside.

  473. So, God is always concerned

  474. with dealing with our hearts.

  475. He's dealt with my heart a lot over the years.

  476. He's brought me through some hard lessons

  477. that I had to take to heart.

  478. And now the Holy Spirit stirs me

  479. to act on God's mission.

  480. To partner with God.

  481. So I try to listen to the Holy Spirit.

  482. I'm not perfect in it.

  483. If any of y'all ever get perfect in it

  484. teach me your ways.

  485. But we all need to take our next step

  486. in partnering with God

  487. through giving.

  488. So,

  489. we partner through giving.

  490. And we partner through serving.

  491. We partner through serving.

  492. How do we partner

  493. through serving?

  494. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  495. gives us a wonderful

  496. illustration of that.

  497. Philippians 2

  498. it says

  499. let this mind be in you.

  500. Which was also in

  501. Jesus Christ.

  502. who being in the form of God

  503. did not think it robbery

  504. to be equal with God.

  505. But instead

  506. made himself

  507. of no reputation

  508. took upon him

  509. the form of a

  510. servant.

  511. And was made

  512. in the likeness

  513. of men.

  514. Talking about how Jesus

  515. laid down

  516. his throne in heaven

  517. stepped down

  518. to this earth

  519. keeping 100% God

  520. but also becoming

  521. 100% man.

  522. And he laid down

  523. his life

  524. as a servant

  525. for you

  526. and for me.

  527. So he is our example.

  528. We must follow

  529. in his steps

  530. and so we partner

  531. not just through giving

  532. but we also partner

  533. through serving.

  534. You see

  535. you might be the kind

  536. of person who says

  537. man

  538. I don't want to get out there

  539. and do anything

  540. in the church.

  541. I'll just sit back there

  542. and write the checks.

  543. I'll sit back there

  544. and pay the bills.

  545. Number one

  546. thank you for partnering

  547. and giving.

  548. God will bless you

  549. for that

  550. as long as your heart

  551. is to give

  552. sacrificially to God.

  553. But we need

  554. your service too.

  555. We need your service too.

  556. That doesn't mean

  557. you have to do

  558. the most physically

  559. strenuous thing

  560. if that's not

  561. the stage of life

  562. you're in

  563. where you can do that.

  564. But it means

  565. you can partner

  566. in prayer.

  567. It means you can partner

  568. in giving advice

  569. to those

  570. who have maybe

  571. not walked in those

  572. steps yet

  573. and you have.

  574. Maybe there's something

  575. you have to give

  576. a way you have to serve

  577. and God is keeping

  578. you in this church

  579. in this place

  580. for that reason

  581. don't miss it.

  582. Don't miss the blessing

  583. of doing God's work

  584. according to God's call.

  585. So we partner

  586. through serving

  587. and we do it

  588. by serving

  589. God

  590. and by serving

  591. people.

  592. Would you take me

  593. to the next slide

  594. because this just

  595. stopped working

  596. for some reason.

  597. There we go.

  598. Got it.

  599. Got it back.

  600. How to partner

  601. through serving

  602. we serve God

  603. and we serve people.

  604. The mission statement

  605. of this church says

  606. and we'll read it

  607. toward the end

  608. of the service here

  609. the mission statement

  610. of this church says

  611. we are here

  612. to love God

  613. to seek truth

  614. and to serve people.

  615. So we can summarize

  616. that by saying

  617. we serve God

  618. and we serve people

  619. and we do it

  620. because we love him

  621. because he first

  622. loved us.

  623. Right?

  624. So we do it

  625. from a heart

  626. out of love

  627. and appreciation

  628. for God

  629. and so if we love God

  630. we will then serve.

  631. You look at the story

  632. of Mary and Martha.

  633. Jesus came to Bethany

  634. to visit his friends

  635. Lazarus, Mary, and Martha

  636. and we watched them

  637. in The Chosen

  638. just a couple of weeks ago

  639. and you see

  640. that Mary

  641. just wanted to sit

  642. at Jesus' feet

  643. and listen to him

  644. soak in his teaching.

  645. She, Jesus

  646. was the most important thing

  647. to her in that moment.

  648. Martha,

  649. Jesus said

  650. was all worried

  651. about serving

  652. about doing all the things

  653. preparing the food

  654. for them

  655. getting everything ready

  656. cleaning the house

  657. fixing everything up.

  658. She was all worried

  659. about that kind of service.

  660. She wasn't serving God

  661. in that moment.

  662. It looked like she was

  663. but Jesus made it clear.

  664. He said,

  665. Martha, you

  666. are worried

  667. about many things.

  668. Mary, your sister,

  669. is worried about

  670. the most important thing

  671. and that's

  672. sitting at my feet.

  673. So you say,

  674. we're talking about serving.

  675. Why are you using

  676. Mary as an example?

  677. Because she's the one

  678. who didn't serve.

  679. Because she spent time

  680. with Jesus.

  681. You know what happens

  682. when you spend time

  683. with Jesus?

  684. Jesus,

  685. then you begin to think

  686. how he thinks.

  687. You begin to look

  688. where he looks.

  689. The things that are

  690. important to him

  691. become important to you.

  692. And we see a picture

  693. of that.

  694. When Jesus had talked

  695. to the woman

  696. at the well,

  697. this adulterous,

  698. wicked woman

  699. was at the well

  700. drawing water

  701. and Jesus stopped

  702. and talked to her

  703. and showed her the truth

  704. and she placed her faith

  705. in Jesus

  706. and she went back

  707. to tell her whole city

  708. about how God

  709. had changed her life.

  710. And the disciples

  711. came up

  712. and they said,

  713. what happened here?

  714. We went to find lunch

  715. and you talked

  716. to this woman

  717. and now she's back there

  718. telling everybody

  719. all about you.

  720. Jesus said,

  721. lift up your eyes

  722. and look on the fields

  723. around you.

  724. And they're looking around

  725. like,

  726. are you talking about

  727. the cornfield over there?

  728. Jesus said,

  729. no, no, I'm not

  730. talking about crops.

  731. I'm talking about people.

  732. Lift up your eyes

  733. and look on the fields

  734. of people.

  735. He said,

  736. they are white

  737. already unto harvest.

  738. Like they're showing signs

  739. that they're ready

  740. to be harvested.

  741. He said,

  742. my priorities

  743. is always going to be

  744. the people

  745. seeing them turn

  746. from darkness

  747. to light.

  748. Paul said,

  749. my heart's desire

  750. and my prayer to God

  751. is that the lost

  752. would be saved.

  753. He had spent enough time

  754. with Jesus

  755. to get Jesus' heart's desire,

  756. to get God's heart's desire.

  757. So when,

  758. like Mary,

  759. you sit at Jesus' feet,

  760. you will begin then

  761. to get up

  762. from your seated position

  763. and to go out

  764. with Jesus

  765. hand in hand

  766. following in his footsteps

  767. and carrying the gospel

  768. to the lost around you.

  769. And you'll do that

  770. through the ministry

  771. of your local church.

  772. church,

  773. this church

  774. has a mission

  775. to carry the gospel

  776. to those who need it.

  777. The good news of Jesus.

  778. And you can go on mission

  779. by serving

  780. in this church.

  781. That might be

  782. singing in the choir.

  783. That might be teaching

  784. a Sunday school class.

  785. That might be

  786. serving on a team.

  787. That might be greeting people

  788. when they walk in the door.

  789. That might be joining

  790. a prayer ministry.

  791. That might be

  792. whatever God

  793. lays on your heart

  794. to do.

  795. Might be going out

  796. and inviting somebody

  797. to come on Sunday

  798. and see what God's doing

  799. in this church.

  800. But you can partner

  801. through serving.

  802. And when we do that,

  803. we are serving God

  804. by serving people.

  805. 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  806. and verse 58.

  807. It will be done.

  808. Therefore,

  809. my beloved brothers,

  810. be steadfast,

  811. immovable,

  812. always abounding

  813. in the work

  814. of the Lord,

  815. knowing that in the Lord

  816. your labor

  817. is not in vain.

  818. We got two words

  819. in this verse.

  820. Work and labor.

  821. How many of you think

  822. you gotta work your way

  823. to heaven?

  824. You gotta work

  825. to pay for your sins?

  826. It's the labor

  827. that you do for God

  828. that earns you

  829. eternal life in heaven.

  830. Thankfully,

  831. no hands were raised.

  832. I'm glad

  833. because that is not

  834. the gospel, right?

  835. There's nothing we can do

  836. to get to God.

  837. The Bible says

  838. in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  839. there's not by works

  840. of righteousness

  841. that we have done.

  842. By His mercy,

  843. He saved us.

  844. So,

  845. we can't work our way

  846. into favor with God,

  847. but we can work

  848. to see God's mission

  849. accomplished

  850. on this earth

  851. to earn up crowns

  852. in heaven.

  853. And someday,

  854. when we stand before God,

  855. we'll be able to say,

  856. Jesus,

  857. this is what I did

  858. for you

  859. because you did

  860. everything for me.

  861. So,

  862. God is challenging us

  863. through this verse

  864. in 1 Corinthians

  865. to always abound

  866. in the work

  867. of the Lord.

  868. Keep growing.

  869. Keep overflowing.

  870. Not just a little bit,

  871. right?

  872. Maybe you start

  873. with just a little bit

  874. of service.

  875. Man,

  876. I showed up to church today.

  877. What more do you want

  878. from me, right?

  879. But then you take

  880. another step.

  881. Okay,

  882. now all of a sudden

  883. I'm coming down here

  884. and passing the plate

  885. during the offering time.

  886. I'm an usher.

  887. Now I'm on the greeting team.

  888. Now I'm helping out

  889. in the children's ministry

  890. or the youth ministry.

  891. Man,

  892. these youth workers

  893. have been in this

  894. youth ministry

  895. for a long time,

  896. some of them.

  897. Some of them might need

  898. a break

  899. and some of you

  900. might need to step

  901. into their place.

  902. So,

  903. what's the next step

  904. for you

  905. in service?

  906. What's the next step

  907. for you?

  908. Back in Philippians

    Philippians 1:3

  909. chapter 1,

  910. verse 3,

  911. I give thanks

  912. to my God

  913. for every remembrance

  914. of you

  915. because of your

  916. partnership

  917. in the gospel.

  918. And then down

  919. in verse 6,

  920. I'm sure of this,

  921. that he who started

  922. this good work

  923. in you,

  924. he's going to carry

  925. it on to completion.

  926. That's that

  927. always abounding.

  928. Okay?

  929. What's your next step

  930. in God carrying

  931. on to completion

  932. the good work

  933. he started

  934. in you?

  935. So,

  936. how do we abound?

  937. How do we carry

  938. it on to completion,

  939. this partnership

  940. with God

  941. through serving?

  942. God,

  943. what do you want me

  944. to give?

  945. How do you want me

  946. to serve?

  947. Two questions,

  948. I pray that

  949. every person

  950. in here,

  951. young,

  952. old,

  953. and everybody

  954. in between,

  955. would ask ourselves

  956. as we leave

  957. the church today.

  958. That God would

  959. bring it back

  960. to our minds

  961. tomorrow morning

  962. when we wake up.

  963. God,

  964. what do you want

  965. me to give?

  966. God,

  967. how do you want

  968. me to serve?

  969. You know,

  970. if you ask God

  971. those questions,

  972. he'll give you answers.

  973. He'll give you answers.

  974. And then it's our

  975. privilege

  976. to respond

  977. and say,

  978. God,

  979. I will give

  980. what you want me

  981. to give.

  982. Not what Pastor Sam

  983. thinks I should give.

  984. Not what my parents

  985. think I should give.

  986. Not what my,

  987. whoever thinks

  988. I should give.

  989. God,

  990. what you want me

  991. to give.

  992. Not what my financial

  993. advisor thinks

  994. I should give

  995. because he may

  996. want you to cut out

  997. that charitable giving.

  998. You don't have

  999. enough money for that.

  1000. It's not charitable

  1001. giving when you're

  1002. giving it to God.

1003. It is in the eyes

  1004. of the IRS,

  1005. but God doesn't

  1006. need our charity.

  1007. But we need

  1008. to give it

  1009. to God.

  1010. So God,

  1011. what do you want

  1012. me to give?

  1013. And then God,

  1014. how do you want

  1015. me to serve?

  1016. Maybe I've been

  1017. serving in a way

  1018. that's been draining

  1019. me.

  1020. God,

  1021. maybe you prepared

  1022. me or equipped

  1023. me to do

  1024. something else.

1025. Show me what it is

1026. you want me to do

  1027. at this moment

  1028. in my life

  1029. and then whatever

  1030. it is,

  1031. I will do it.

  1032. So our takeaway

  1033. for today,

  1034. what is my

  1035. next step?

  1036. What's my next

  1037. step to go

  1038. on mission

  1039. for God

  1040. by partnering

  1041. with his

  1042. church?

  1043. Can we pray

  1044. together?

  1045. God,

  1046. I ask that you

  1047. would show us

  1048. what that next

  1049. step is.

  1050. There are people

  1051. all across

  1052. this room

  1053. whose hearts

  1054. are willing.

  1055. I know it.

  1056. I believe it.

  1057. I've seen it.

  1058. Show us

  1059. what you want

  1060. us to give

  1061. to you

  1062. and then show

  1063. us

  1064. how you want

  1065. us to serve

  1066. you.

  1067. So many people

  1068. in this room

  1069. can point back

  1070. to a time

  1071. when they placed

  1072. their faith

  1073. in you

  1074. for the forgiveness

  1075. of their sins.

  1076. they repented

  1077. and they

  1078. turned to you

  1079. and said,

  1080. God,

  1081. I'm turning

  1082. from my sin

  1083. and I'm

  1084. turning to Jesus.

  1085. I believe

  1086. that he alone

  1087. can save me

  1088. because he died

  1089. for me.

  1090. He rose

  1095. Since that day,

  1096. many of the people

  1097. in this room

  1098. have been serving you.

  1099. They've been growing.

  1100. They've been trying

  1101. to do what

  1103. for their lives.

  1126. we will reap

  1127. a great harvest.

  1128. You'll do

  1129. something great.

  1130. We know

  1131. that your strength

  1132. is enough.

  1145. As they leave

  1146. here today,

  1147. this week,

  1148. that they would

  1149. taste how good

  1150. you are.

  1151. that your

  1152. goodness

  1153. would inspire

  1154. every one of us

  1155. to give a little

  1156. more back to you,

  1157. to do a little

  1158. more out of
