  1. Well, amen. Have you been blessed by the service so far this morning? I know I have as well.

  2. Look down in the seat next to you. You might be blessed a little bit more. There's candy, okay?

  3. The GA is the Girls in Action on Wednesday night. It's part of our kids' ministry.

  4. Just left that as a little treat for you. So anybody like sour gummy worms?

  5. Right there. First one up. There you go.

  6. I don't have any more. It's not that kind of service, all right? I'm not Santa Claus.

  7. Let's go to the Book of Acts, please. We're continuing on with our sermon series on community,

  8. talking about how we can learn some lessons from the early church back in the Book of Acts.

  9. By the way, if your kids haven't gone back to Children's Church, you can do that.

  10. Slip out any time here. They're ready for them back there.

  11. This is our third sermon in this series, and we kind of started out a couple weeks ago

  12. talking about how we study truth together.

  13. Four primary ingredients we've been starting out.

  14. Two weeks ago, we covered the first one. Last week, the second one.

  15. We're looking at the third one today. We'll conclude it next Sunday.

  16. And these are four key ingredients we find from Acts chapter 2 in our study of how the early church,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  17. kind of the first church that was established by Jesus, how it thrived, how it took off,

  18. how it really grew into the missional organization and almost organism

  19. that was alive, living, breathing, and powerfully moving across the world.

  20. How did all of that happen? And how many centuries later can our church be the same kind of church

  21. as those early churches in the Book of Acts?

  22. So, we study truth together. That's one of the key ingredients that they did.

  23. And our takeaway from that Sunday was,

  24. will I commit to grow with my church community in studying truth together?

  25. Together. Our dGroups are launching this week.

  26. All right? Today's the day that we've been looking forward to for quite some time

  27. in the launch of our discipleship groups that are meeting throughout the week.

  28. And that's going to be one of the key ingredients of our groups is studying truth together.

  29. Last Sunday, we talked about koinonia,

  30. that fascinating Greek word that means fellowship.

  31. All right? And we talked about what that looks like in Christian community.

  32. What does fellowship look like? And our takeaway last Sunday was,

  33. will I commit to partner with my church community in fellowship together?

  34. Today, we are going to look at the third ingredient.

  35. And I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag yet,

  36. but we'll get there in just a moment.

  37. Reminds you of this quote,

  38. the church is the church only when it exists for others.

  39. Let's try to read it together, can we?

  40. The church is the church only when it exists for others.

  41. Because the church is not about us.

  42. It's about God.

  43. And God's heart is for those who are not yet in his kingdom.

  44. He wants all of his children brought in.

  45. So the church is for, it's not about me.

  46. It's about my brothers and sisters in Christ.

  47. And it's about those outside these walls who God wants to bring in to our fellowship,

  48. bring in to our community.

  49. So we have to remember that that is a principle that God wants us to understand.

  50. Acts 2.42, can I trouble you to stand one more time?

  51. I'll promise I'll leave you seated after that.

  52. Let's stand together as we read God's word together.

  53. Acts 2.42, I'm reading from the New Living Translation.

  54. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching,

  55. to fellowship, to sharing in meals, including the Lord's Supper,

  56. and to prayer.

  57. A deep sense of awe came over them all.

  58. And the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.

  59. All the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.

  60. Amazing picture, isn't it?

  61. They sold their properties and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

  62. They worshiped together at the temple each day,

  63. met in homes for the Lord's Supper,

  64. and shared their meals with great joy and generosity.

  65. All the while, praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.

  66. And each day, here's the result.

  67. The Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

  68. And we pray together.

  69. God, I pray right now that you would move mightily in our church.

  70. That you would turn our hearts.

  71. God, just a moment ago, we sang the words,

  72. Christ, be magnified in me.

  73. From the altar of my life, that means we've got to sacrifice it.

  74. We've got to lay it down on the altar and let you be magnified.

  75. Let you be preeminent.

  76. Let you be number one, first and foremost.

  77. And when we do that, God, we reap all that is you.

  78. We reap all your goodness.

  79. We get to enjoy all of your love and your mercy and your grace and your hope.

  80. And we unlock all the blessings that you so desperately want to give us.

  81. I pray that you would be magnified in our lives and in our church.

  82. It's in Jesus' name we pray.

  83. Amen.

  84. You may be seated.

  85. Thank you for standing.

  86. So, before we dive into this third ingredient of what healthy church community looks like,

  87. I want to wish all of you a happy National Date Nut Bread Day.

  88. And I'm a little offended that nobody wished me that before the service this morning.

  89. Thank you, Jackson.

  90. You're a good man.

  91. I don't care what they say about you.

  92. You're a good guy.

  93. I'm messing.

  94. But listen, I had to look that up, all right?

  95. I was looking up on the national food calendar.

  96. Yes, there is such a thing.

  97. What is Sunday, September 8th, going to be?

  98. And I don't know if you're aware, but there's a little bit of controversy

  99. because some people would say that December 22nd is National Date Nut Bread Day.

  100. I'm more of a September 8th guy.

  101. But if you're a September 22nd person, that's all right.

  102. We should still be able to get along, okay?

  103. But I'm right.

  104. And today is National Date Nut Bread Day.

  105. Do you think that our country is a little bit obsessed with food?

  106. Yeah, we are.

  107. We really are, man.

  108. America is the land of plenty.

  109. Let's look at this picture for a minute.

  110. Anybody know who these people are?

  111. Any of them?

  112. Yeah?

  113. Yeah.

  114. So you're obsessed with food too because it means you watch it on TV.

  115. You don't just eat it.

  116. It entertains you on the screen.

  117. That's right.

  118. You got Gordon Ramsay up there.

  119. You got the first celebrity.

  120. Okay.

  121. The first celebrity chef that I remember is down here in the right-hand corner.

  122. What's her name?

  123. Julia Child.

  124. Look at y'all.

  125. Anybody under the age of 30 didn't say that, but that's all right.

  126. Julia Child.

  127. You said it?

  128. Look at you.

  129. Good job.

  130. You've been educated well, son.

  131. All right.

  132. Julia Child kind of laid the pathway for these cooking shows on TV.

  133. You got Rachel Ray over there, and you got Reed Drummond right up here in Oklahoma.

  134. Of course, you got Gordon Ramsay, and he's probably my least favorite because he's kind of mean.

  135. But that's all right.

  136. And then you've got Emeril Lagasse.

  137. He was my favorite growing up.

  138. He always would throw seasoning on his food and say, bam, it was awesome.

  139. And then you've got Guy Fieri, who is now just, he is his own person.

  140. So he's a unique character.

  141. Listen, there are so many others we could have put up on that screen, but I was just trying

  142. to pull some up there and make the point that food is not just sustenance in our culture,

  143. right?

  144. We don't just eat to live more often than not.

  145. We live to eat.

  146. And it has become a world unto itself.

  147. That's right.

  148. It's a hobby.

  149. It's an occupation.

  150. Now it's not just I want to make food for my family or even I want to make food for a restaurant.

  151. It's, you know, I want to cook food on TV and entertain millions with my cooking.

  152. Truth is, there's power in food.

  153. There's power in a good meal.

  154. You don't believe that.

  155. Look at this quote by Oscar Wilde.

  156. After a good dinner, one can forgive anybody, even one's own relatives.

  157. Sometimes we see that around the holidays.

  158. When you're hungry and angry, it's a really bad combination.

  159. It comes out to being hangry, right?

  160. Nobody wants to be there.

  161. There is a lot of power in food.

  162. There's a lot of ways to turn your mind around, ways to turn your emotions around, ways to help

  163. you think a little more clearly.

  164. I know there's a lot of science behind that.

  165. I don't know all the science behind it, but that's okay.

  166. We don't have to get bogged down in that.

  167. But I want to share this quote by you by a chef named Heston Blumenthal.

  168. It says, to me, food is as much about the moment, the occasion, the location, and the

  169. company as it is about the taste.

  170. That's an interesting thought.

  171. And the truth is, food has kind of always been that way.

  172. You go back throughout human history, back to the Romans and the Greeks, and all societies

  173. primarily have centered so much of their culture and their community around food.

  174. So it's interesting that God created mankind in his image.

  175. And throughout human history, for as long as we've been around, we have been a people that

  176. would like to feast, would like to gather around food.

  177. When we have meetings, we usually make something for the meeting.

  178. And Jesus did not fight that.

  179. Fact is, he embraced it.

  180. He modeled it.

  181. We get to learn a lot from how Jesus was with food.

  182. So let's look back at our text verse this morning.

  183. Acts 2 42.

  184. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching.

  185. Two weeks ago, we studied truth together, right?

  186. And to fellowship.

  187. Last week, we fellowshiped together.

  188. And to sharing in meals.

  189. So today, we eat together.

  190. Now, I don't mean we're going to eat together right now, okay?

  191. I'm sorry.

  192. I didn't provide snacks.

  193. The GAs were looking out for y'all, and they put food out there for you, okay?

  194. So if you need to get a little snack while we're eating, I won't judge you.

  195. While we're studying here, I won't judge you.

  196. That's all right.

  197. Yeah, we can eat together right now.

  198. But listen to this.

  199. Eating together unites us in our common need.

  200. Eating together unites us in our common need.

  201. The funny thing is, no matter where we are around the world, people eat.

  202. People need to eat.

  203. No matter what side of life you're from, the wrong side of the tracks or the right side

  204. of the tracks.

  205. No matter what your socioeconomic background is or how much money you have in your bank

  206. account.

  207. No matter what race you are or how you're looked at or who your friends are.

  208. We all have this common need to eat.

  209. So eating together unites us in our common need.

  210. That this is something that we all share in common, this need for physical sustenance.

  211. So truth is, people like oftentimes the same foods.

  212. I watched this thing on Food Network TV about chefs, famous celebrity chefs and their favorite

  213. foods they like to eat.

  214. And you know what most of them said?

  215. I don't want to go home and cook a gourmet meal because I do that for work.

  216. I want to pull through McDonald's and get a Big Mac.

  217. I want to go through Taco Bell and get a whatever thing is going to give you indigestion later.

  218. But rich and poor alike eat oftentimes the same foods because they like the same foods.

  219. You go to cultures all around this world.

  220. I've had the opportunity to travel to all 50 states and even 20-something countries around

  221. the world growing up.

  222. And I saw that street foods in all these different countries are enjoyed and prized and prioritized

  223. by everyone.

  224. It's like, man, no matter who you are, if you're visiting someone rich or someone poor, they

  225. all say, oh, you got to go down to this food stand over here and try this delicacy.

  226. They love it.

  227. They take pride in it.

  228. We may have little else in common, but here in Texas, we like our Tex-Mex.

  229. We like our barbecue.

  230. We like our steak.

  231. We like our burgers, our chili, basically any other way that mankind has invented to digest

  232. red meat.

  233. If there's any vegans in here, I apologize for that, okay?

  234. You know you're in the minority.

  235. You live in Texas, all right?

  236. That's all right.

  237. Nothing against you.

  238. But we are bound together by this.

  239. And we're bound together by our common need for food.

  240. So let's look at what the scriptures have to say.

  241. Isaiah 55, verses 1 and 2.

    Isaiah 55:1

  242. Is anyone thirsty?

  243. Come and drink, even if you have no money.

  244. Take your choice of wine and milk.

  245. It's all free.

  246. Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength?

  247. Why pay for food that does you no good?

  248. Listen to me, and you will eat what is good.

  249. You will enjoy the finest food.

  250. Isn't that interesting that he's casting it in these terms of our physical need for food?

  251. Of course, the prophet Isaiah is talking about the words of God.

  252. He's talking about going to God for our strength.

  253. But he's appealing to our need and our sense of hunger and filling that need inside us physically.

  254. And he's saying, just like you can fill this need, you can come and drink of the well of God, even if you have no money.

  255. And he will give you the satisfaction that you crave.

  256. Once again, he's appealing to their physical hunger, their desire for sustenance.

  257. You know, man, they didn't have it great in Egypt, did they?

  258. The children of Israel, they were under oppression, and then God liberated from that.

  259. And he took them on this 40-year wandering in the desert.

  260. But all the while, he kept this promised land in front of them and said, hey, listen, just hang with me.

  261. I'm going to take you on the journey you've got to go on.

  262. But the promised land is going to hold for you the sustenance you desire, the satisfaction you desire.

  263. And he cast it in the terms of food.

  264. Because that's where we live.

  265. It's the world we live in.

  266. Some of us have lived there a little too much.

  267. Okay?

  268. I'm one to talk.

  269. I'm right there with you.

  270. But I will have you know that since I started training for my 5K, I'm down 25 pounds.

  271. Okay?

  272. Yes.

  273. Sorry.

  274. That was blatantly asking for a clap.

  275. And I apologize.

  276. But I had to let you know how I'm doing.

  277. All right?

  278. I haven't forgotten it.

  279. I haven't quit training.

  280. I actually went out and ran outside this morning.

  281. I've done a little more in the gym while the weather's been so hot.

  282. But, yeah, I actually went outside.

  283. Wasn't it nice this morning?

  284. Like 50-something degrees when we woke up?

  285. Okay.

  286. I'll do with that any September in Texas.

  287. That'll work.

  288. Eating together lowers our defenses.

  289. Eating together unites us in our common need, but it also lowers our defenses.

  290. Isn't that interesting?

  291. Think about that for a minute.

  292. Sometimes you can be in maybe a little bit of an argument with your husband or wife or something,

  293. and you're both hungry, and you know that's probably part of it.

  294. And then you go eat.

  295. And then afterwards, what were we fighting about?

  296. Why does it matter so much?

  297. Whether it's a really good night's sleep you crave or a really good meal you crave,

  298. sometimes it's just a physical need that makes everything seem worse.

  299. But once you're fed, once you're satisfied, it lowers some of those defenses,

  300. and it's like, hey, we can probably work this out.

  301. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together.

  302. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people eat together.

  303. One of those chefs from that picture just a minute ago, Guy Fieri, said that.

  304. And I thought it was really applicable to what we're learning today.

  305. Food is the universal language.

  306. It is this force that can bring us together,

  307. because one of the reasons for that is it does lower our defenses.

  308. It reminds us we all need this.

  309. We all want this.

  310. And this can help us.

  311. And it helps us to lay down our weapons and eat together.

  312. So, Jesus practiced eating together.

  313. We're not just here to look on the screen and see what chefs had to say about food, all right?

  314. They're kind of in the business, so you think they're going to be slanted a little bit toward that.

  315. But Jesus himself practiced this.

  316. And this is what we're going to study this morning.

  317. Jesus specifically is recorded eating together with others no fewer than 14 times throughout the New Testament.

  318. Many other times, it's probably implied that he ate together.

  319. For instance, when he went to Zacchaeus' house, it's probably understood that they ate together,

  320. but I'm not counting that in the 14 times.

  321. But we see specific instances of Jesus breaking bread and eating with others no fewer than 14 times.

  322. Some of his most astonishing miracles and meaningful instruction came around the table, around food.

  323. So, Jesus didn't do that accidentally.

  324. And that information is not included in our holy scriptures accidentally.

  325. God could have just told us the instruction.

  326. He could have just told us about the miracles without including the fact that they were eating together.

  327. But he wanted us to know that.

  328. Because there's something special about sharing food, isn't there?

  329. In our discipleship groups that are about to start,

  330. first one starts tonight.

  331. And we've got two on Tuesday.

  332. We've got one on Wednesday.

  333. We've got one on Monday night, tomorrow night.

  334. Throughout the week, we have discipleship groups that are going to be gathering together.

  335. And we've prioritized eating together.

  336. Doesn't have to be a full meal.

  337. Could just be a snack.

  338. But we will eat together every time.

  339. Listen, that can be difficult to coordinate.

  340. But we think it's worth it.

  341. Think it's worth it because, number one, Jesus did it.

  342. And number two, it unites us together.

  343. And number three, it lowers our defenses.

  344. And as we eat, we talk about our week.

  345. The week that passed.

  346. The week that's coming up.

  347. Time after time.

  348. Meeting after meeting.

  349. We're beginning to grow together as we eat together.

  350. So, Jesus practiced this with his disciples.

  351. With others.

  352. The Bible says with publicans and sinners.

  353. Those who were the least of society.

  354. Those who were looked down on by others.

  355. Jesus put his reputation on the line.

  356. And went and not only spoke to them.

  357. He sat with them.

  358. He went in their homes.

  359. He ate with them.

  360. He fellowshiped with them.

  361. He practiced community with them.

  362. Luke chapter 9 and verse 16.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  363. It's just one of those instances.

  364. Taking the five loaves and the two fish.

  365. Looking up to heaven.

  366. Jesus gave thanks and broke them.

  367. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

  368. Jesus understood that it was going to be difficult

  369. to teach the valuable gospel message of God's kingdom

  370. to these thousands of people gathered there

  371. without first meeting their physical need.

  372. Y'all, there is a principle there that you and I have to understand.

  373. You can't just beat people over the head with the Bible.

  374. You got to meet their physical needs first.

  375. Sometimes their physical needs may be too much for us to be able to meet.

  376. But that should never be an excuse for not meeting any need.

  377. There is a story that I heard a long time ago

  378. about an old man who went down to the beach

  379. and he saw a little boy out there picking up starfish

  380. that had washed ashore and throwing them back into the ocean.

  381. Very good.

  382. He's heard that one before. I like it.

  383. The old man was like,

  384. Son, you're never going to save all these starfish.

  385. He said, No, I'm not.

  386. But I can save this one.

  387. And I can save this one.

  388. And that is the point that we must carry through with us.

  389. I heard a preacher put it this way.

  390. Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone.

  391. Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone.

  392. We're not the Father in heaven.

  393. We can't meet every need.

  394. But God places people in our path

  395. that we may be able to meet their need.

  396. Jesus didn't feed the whole world

  397. while he was down here on this earth.

  398. But he fed these 5,000.

  399. And time and time again,

  400. he didn't heal all of the physical problems in the world.

  401. But he healed the ones who came to him.

  402. He met the needs of the ones who crossed his path.

  403. Can you and I honestly say that we meet the needs that we can?

  404. Whether they're physical or they're spiritual.

  405. Maybe they're emotional.

  406. Maybe they're mental.

  407. Maybe there are people with problems in your life

  408. that God could use you powerfully to help them.

  409. But we've got to open up our heart and be willing.

  410. Say, God, use me.

  411. Just like you helped people,

  412. I know that now I'm here on this earth

  413. as your hands and feet.

  414. And I want you to help me,

  415. work through me,

  416. and help others.

  417. So Jesus practiced this.

  418. Time and time again,

  419. we could show scripture after scripture

  420. of Jesus using food

  421. to help others,

  422. to open up their ears,

  423. to lower their defenses,

  424. to make them more receptive

  425. to what he had to say.

  426. And that's why we prioritize

  427. this way of fellowship,

  428. eating together.

  429. Plus, number two,

  430. heaven promises

  431. that someday we're going to be eating together.

  432. Someday we're going to be eating together.

  433. Anybody know what that's called?

  434. The marriage supper of the Lamb.

  435. You can read about it in the book of Revelation.

  436. We don't have to spend a lot of time

  437. diving into what that looks like

  438. or what's going to be served, okay?

  439. I know what's going to be served.

  440. But if I say what I want there,

  441. it probably won't be the same as what you want.

  442. But God promises

  443. that everything will be beyond anything

  444. that we can comprehend

  445. in its majesty,

  446. its glory,

  447. how wonderful and great it is

  448. in heaven someday.

  449. So whatever we're going to do in heaven,

  450. whatever we're going to eat in heaven,

  451. it's going to be the best, all right?

  452. I think personally it's going to be fajitas,

  453. but you may not want that.

  454. If you do,

  455. we all need to pray for you, all right?

  456. But that's okay.

  457. The reality is

  458. God promises us

  459. this wonderful supper in heaven.

  460. Why would he do that

  461. if he didn't know that food

  462. was so important to us

  463. and apparently important to him?

  464. So we're going to eat together.

  465. But the thing about that is

  466. Jesus is always the center.

  467. No matter what example

  468. you can find in the Bible

  469. of eating together,

  470. of Jesus using food,

  471. Jesus was always

  472. the main attraction.

  473. He was always the center,

  474. the uniting host.

  475. That should characterize,

  476. that should describe

  477. our times of eating together

  478. as a body,

  479. as a community.

  480. Jesus should always be the center,

  481. the uniting host.

  482. Revelation 3.20 says this,

  483. look, I stand at the door

  484. and I knock.

  485. If you hear my voice

  486. and you open the door,

  487. I will come in

  488. and what does it say?

  489. We will share a meal together

  490. as friends.

  491. I love that paraphrase

  492. of what the Bible verse says

  493. because it really makes it clear

  494. for us what he's trying

  495. to get across here.

  496. He's saying,

  497. I'm knocking at the door,

  498. open the door,

  499. I will come in

  500. and we will fellowship.

  501. We will have community.

  502. We will be friends together.

  503. Y'all, I promise you,

  504. some of us,

  505. Jesus is knocking on the door

  506. of our heart right now.

  507. We've got to let him in.

  508. He wants to come in

  509. and share a meal with us,

  510. so to speak.

  511. He wants to be our friend.

  512. He wants to have a real

  513. meaningful relationship with you.

  514. What happens

  515. when you just see people

  516. from time to time

  517. around the community

  518. and you say hi to them

  519. and then maybe in conversation

  520. somebody brings up that person

  521. and you say,

  522. oh yeah,

  523. I know who you're talking about.

  524. They seem like a nice guy

  525. or she seems like a nice girl.

  526. Oh, do you know her?

  527. Well, I mean,

  528. I know her to say hi to,

  529. you know.

  530. We're not that close,

  531. but they seem like a nice person.

  532. But what happens

  533. when you have dinner

  534. with that person?

  535. Do you just sit there

  536. in stony silence

  537. and eat your food?

  538. Be awkward, right?

  539. If you do,

  540. there probably won't be

  541. a second invite to dinner,

  542. right?

  543. Wow, that was weird.

  544. They just looked at us

  545. the whole time

  546. as they ate their enchiladas.

  547. But no, you talk.

  548. You talk,

  549. you share stories.

  550. Where are you guys from originally?

  551. Oh, you're from around here?

  552. That's awesome.

  553. How'd you meet?

  554. Where'd you go to school?

  555. You find the things

  556. you have in common.

  557. Do you like the Cowboys?

  558. Good.

  559. Because if you didn't,

  560. you'd have to leave right now.

  561. By the way,

  562. for all those who are wondering,

  563. the Cowboys re-signed

  564. Dak Prescott.

  565. He is the quarterback

  566. once again.

  567. Trying to get that out.

  568. In case you were

  569. checking your phone,

  570. it happened.

  571. Just let it go.

  572. You can read about it

  573. after church.

  574. Look,

  575. there are so many things

  576. that you and I

  577. can have in common.

  578. But we find those out

  579. oftentimes over meals,

  580. sitting down and talking.

  581. That's the picture

  582. Jesus is painting.

  583. I'm standing at the door

  584. of your heart.

  585. Y'all,

  586. he's not talking

  587. to lost people here.

  588. Now,

  589. he wants them

  590. to invite him in as well.

  591. But the reality is,

  592. Jesus wants us,

  593. his children,

  594. to open the door to him.

  595. He said,

  596. I already know you.

  597. You need to get to know me.

  598. And I want to reveal myself to you.

  599. And he uses this example

  600. of sharing a meal together

  601. as friends.

  602. How powerful is that?

  603. We can't miss that.

  604. So,

  605. that's why we're

  606. emphasizing that

  607. in our discipleship groups.

  608. It's amazing to me

  609. sometimes

  610. how people evaluate

  611. groups,

  612. small groups,

  613. by

  614. kind of similarly

  615. to how they evaluate

  616. a lot of other things

  617. in life

  618. by what they personally

  619. get out of it.

  620. Now,

  621. careful,

  622. don't get offended here,

  623. okay?

  624. They'll say,

  625. well,

  626. you know,

  627. small groups

  628. just aren't really my thing.

  629. They don't really work for me.

  630. But you're kind of missing

  631. the point here.

  632. In a small group,

  633. you give yourself

  634. away.

  635. That's what Jesus

  636. is telling us.

  637. I want to give myself

  638. away.

  639. I want to open myself up

  640. to you.

  641. And that's what we do

  642. in the groups.

  643. We open ourselves up

  644. to each other

  645. because we

  646. love

  647. each other.

  648. or at least

  649. we say we do

  650. because we love

  651. God

  652. and we love

  653. God's people

  654. and we love

  655. the people

  656. outside this church,

  657. in this community.

  658. And so if we do,

  659. then we open

  660. ourselves up.

  661. In a small group,

  662. you got to give

  663. yourself

  664. away.

  665. The writer in Acts

  666. did not

  667. list

  668. what

  669. these groups

  670. got out of it.

  671. they listed

  672. what they gave.

  673. They listed

  674. how they served

  675. one another.

  676. How they opened

  677. themselves up

  678. to one another.

  679. That

  680. was the takeaway

  681. from these

  682. early

  683. D groups

  684. that became

  685. the most powerful

  686. church movement

  687. that we've ever seen.

  688. And we've been trying

  689. to get back to it

  690. ever since.

  691. So Acts

  692. goes on

  693. and on

  694. and on

  695. about how

  696. extensively

  697. how

  698. carefully

  699. the church

  700. cared

  701. for one another.

  702. How they gave

  703. to each other.

  704. Their generosity

  705. that they found

  706. in Jesus Christ

  707. was then

  708. modeled

  709. for each other.

  710. Should be a

  711. regular occurrence

  712. that you care

  713. for someone

  714. in this church.

  715. Should be a regular

  716. occurrence

  717. that we care

  718. for one another.

  719. That should be

  720. common

  721. in our community

  722. and it should be

  723. most common

  724. right here

  725. in this group

  726. of people.

  727. Isaiah 25

  728. Matthew 25

  729. Revelation 19

  730. all reference

  731. this coming

  732. feast in heaven

  733. where God

  734. will prepare

  735. this wonderful

  736. sumptuous meal

  737. for his people.

  738. So you and I

  739. are going

  740. to eat together.

  741. We're going

  742. to fellowship

  743. together.

  744. We're going

  745. to have community

  746. together

  747. whether you like

  748. it or not.

  749. Whether it's

  750. your thing

  751. or not

  752. it's gonna

  753. happen

  754. in heaven

  755. someday.

  756. So why not

  757. get into this

  758. heavenly habit

  759. right now.

  760. So it would

  761. have been really

  762. awesome if we'd

  763. had a big old

  764. meal ready for you

  765. in the fellowship

  766. hall as soon as

  767. this church was

  768. over.

  769. WSC before church

  770. said so we eating

  771. together today or

  772. what?

  773. And I was like

  774. well the GAs

  775. took care of that

  776. for us.

  777. here's the

  778. takeaway.

  779. Will I commit

  780. to unite

  781. with my church

  782. be part of

  783. this community

  784. by eating

  785. together?

  786. Two weeks ago

  787. we said will I

  788. commit to grow

  789. with my church

  790. by studying

  791. truth together?

  792. Last week

  793. we said will I

  794. commit to partner

  795. with my church

  796. in fellowship?

  797. This week

  798. we're saying will

  799. I commit to

  800. unite with

  801. my church

  802. community

  803. by eating

  804. together?

  805. We're going to

  806. do that in

  807. groups.

  808. We do that

  809. here at the

  810. Lord's Supper.

  811. We do that

  812. when we have

  813. our meals

  814. together sometimes

  815. in the

  816. fellowship hall

  817. back there.

  818. But beyond

  819. that y'all you

  820. can get together

  821. outside of those

  822. times.

  823. God wants us

  824. to do that.

  825. He wants you

  826. to invite people

  827. over to your

  828. house.

  829. Get to know

  830. them.

  831. Build strong

  832. bonds and

  833. relationships in

  834. this church and

  835. it doesn't always

  836. have to be the

  837. people in your

  838. Sunday school class.

  839. It doesn't

  840. always have to be

  841. the people that

  842. you already hang

  843. out with.

  844. Sometimes God

  845. wants you to reach

  846. across the aisle so

  847. to speak and find

  848. somebody that you

  849. don't know as well

  850. and say hey I want

  851. to get to know you

  852. better.

  853. God's brought us

  854. into this church at

  855. the same time

  856. together so that

  857. must be for a

  858. reason.

  859. I want to break

  860. down any potential

  861. walls between us

  862. and understand life

  863. from your

  864. perspective.

  865. You understand life

  866. from my perspective

  867. and then we see

  868. what God has taught

  869. us and how God is

  870. growing us and man

  871. iron sharpens

  872. iron.

  873. Right?

  874. We grow together

  875. but sometimes it

  876. takes an invitation

  877. to dinner.

  878. Let's pray together.

  879. God I pray that

  880. right now we would

  881. extend that same

  882. invite to others.

  883. You have invited us

  884. to your dinner.

  885. You've invited us

  886. to learn everything

  887. about you.

  888. You've given us what

  889. you call the bread

  890. of life.

  891. You've given us what

  892. you call the water

  893. of life.

  894. You've promised us

  895. this sumptuous feast

  896. in heaven someday

  897. and you've encouraged

  898. us to fellowship

  899. together by eating

  900. together just like

  901. you did when you

  902. were here.

  903. I pray that you

  904. would use this to

  905. inspire us to take

  906. active steps toward

  907. building community

  908. with one another in

  909. this church and that

  910. the result of that

  911. the fruit of that

  912. would be people see

  913. a group of Christians

  914. united like never

  915. before.

  916. In community like

  917. never before and

  918. continually inviting

  919. others in to that

  920. community.

  921. And then maybe God

  922. can add to our

  923. number just like he

  924. did back in the book

  925. of Acts.

  926. Maybe more people

  927. will be drawn to a

  928. relationship with

  929. Jesus not just by how

  930. much scripture we can

  931. quote them.

  932. That's important.

  933. But following your

  934. example saying hey

  935. let's let's go for a

  936. meal.

  937. Let's get together for

  938. lunch.

  939. Let's have coffee.

  940. Let's sit down come

  941. over my house for

  942. dinner and make an

  943. effort to meet them

  944. where they are where

  945. God met us.

  946. And then maybe he'll

  947. use us to make a

  948. powerful impact in

  949. their life.

  950. But God first I want

  951. to extend an invitation

  952. to those who maybe

  953. have never yet invited

  954. you in.

  955. With our heads bowed

  956. is there anybody in

  957. the room that would

  958. say I need to start the

  959. relationship with Jesus

  960. today for myself.

  961. Not asking how long

  962. you've been in church.

  963. I'm not asking how

  964. much you put in the

  965. offering plate.

  966. That has nothing to do

  967. with anything.

  968. I'm not asking if you've

  969. been baptized or not.

  970. I'm asking if you have a

  971. personal relationship with

  972. Jesus.

  973. Jesus.

  974. And if you say I don't

  975. have that and I want to

  976. talk about it would you

  977. slip your hand up and I'll

  978. pray for you.

  979. Say I want to become God's

  980. child.

  981. I want to have a

  982. relationship with him.

  983. Thank you.

  984. What about the rest of us?

  985. Say maybe God has put

  986. something on my heart.

  987. Maybe somebody I could

  988. reach out to.

  989. Build a bridge to.

  990. Maybe have over for dinner

  991. or something like that.

  992. Say there's somebody that

  993. God wants me to reach out

  994. to and start a relationship

  995. with or strengthen a

  996. relationship with.

  997. Would you slip your hand

  998. up?

  999. I'll pray for you as well.

  1000. Thank you.

  1001. Thank you.

  1002. All over the room.

  1003. Thank you.

1004. God you know exactly who

  1005. those people are.

  1006. Those faces.

1007. You know what the needs

  1008. are.

  1009. The complications.

1010. I pray that you would

1011. work in our midst right

  1012. now.

  1013. Give people the boldness.

  1014. Sometimes if you're not a

  1015. naturally a people person

1016. it's hard to step out and

  1017. make the first move.

1018. But God by your spirit

  1019. draw us together.

  1020. Unite us.

  1021. Steve prayed earlier before

  1022. the offering.

  1023. Unite our church God.

  1024. Build this strong community.
