  1. enjoyed the service so far. That was a new song for many of us that Jared just let us in, but I

  2. think I'd heard it a couple times maybe on Christian radio, but I appreciate the atmosphere

  3. that it helped set for our service, the remainder of it. He really is worth it all, isn't he?

  4. All the getting up on Sunday morning, all the trying to not respond to one another in the flesh

  5. how we want to, trying to be led by the Spirit. He is worth all of it. We are in our final installment

  6. of our series on Christian community, the body of Christ, the family of God coming together

  7. in fellowship, and let's look by way of review back at some of these lessons from the early church

  8. that we have learned to be in community with one another. So I want to remind us before we dive into

  9. it of this quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the church is the church only when it exists for others.

  10. God did not establish his mighty, powerful, Spirit-filled church on earth to be a social club.

  11. We are not just to exist for ourselves and our own enjoyment. We are to exist for the glory of God,

  12. for God's purposes, and he has made his purposes very, very plain. We are to be a missional body,

  13. going back to the previous series that we finished a few weeks ago, being on mission for God to the

  14. community around us and to one another. So the church is the church when it exists for others.

  15. Acts chapter 2 and verse 42. Would you mind turning in the Word of God there with me? Acts chapter 2

Acts 2 chapter mention Acts 2 chapter mention

  16. and verse 42. We'll read it and then kind of recap what we have looked at the past few weeks.

  17. When you've arrived there in your Bible, would you mind joining us in standing if you're able to,

  18. if you're physically able, and we'll read this together out of Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  19. and verses 42 down through 47.

  20. I'm reading this one from the New Living Translation. It should be similar to what you have

  21. in front of you. Acts chapter 2 verses 42 through 47. Let's read it.

    Acts 2:42–47

  22. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship

  23. and to sharing in meals, including the Lord's Supper

  24. and to prayer. That's kind of been the keynote verse there

  25. for us as we've been looking, breaking down what exactly was this church like?

  26. What exactly did they do?

  27. What are the very practical ways that God moved in their community?

  28. And then we get to see the results of that in verses 43 through 47.

  29. A deep sense of awe came over them all and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.

  30. Man, we want to see God work in miraculous ways, don't we?

  31. Well, we've got to follow His recipe for that kind of success.

  32. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.

  33. What an evidence of community.

  34. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

  35. They worshiped together at the temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper

  36. and shared their meals with great joy and generosity,

  37. all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.

  38. And each day, the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

  39. What a picture.

  40. No wonder that movement lasted.

  41. No wonder that still in 2024, there are thousands and thousands of churches scattered around this globe

  42. still trying to follow what this movement started, what Jesus instituted.

  43. We follow Jesus, don't we?

  44. We've chosen the Jesus way.

  45. And that's what we're looking at here in Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47.

    Acts 2:42–47

  46. So a couple of weeks ago, we looked at this truth.

  47. We study truth together.

  48. Kind of factor number one or ingredient number one in this recipe for how to have Christian community

  49. is we must study truth together.

  50. And our takeaway from that sermon was,

  51. will I commit to grow together?

  52. Grow together with my church community by studying truth together.

  53. And as we launched our discipleship groups that are now a weekend,

  54. we all kind of kicked them off last Sunday.

  55. And Sunday night, Monday night, Tuesday night, a couple different groups meeting.

  56. And then Wednesday night, we had five different groups going on studying truth together last week,

  57. as well as our Sunday school classes,

  58. as well as right here in the morning service and the things that we've already had going.

  59. Grow group that meets Sunday afternoon.

  60. There's a lot of different ways that we've already been trying to study truth together.

  61. And we're continuing to add to that.

  62. We fellowship together.

  63. A couple of weeks ago, we looked at this.

  64. We fellowship together.

  65. It's that word koinonia that we find in the Bible that means fellowship.

  66. And we broke that down.

  67. And our takeaway was, will I commit to partnering,

  68. partnership with my church community in fellowship together?

  69. Y'all please be seated.

  70. I'm so sorry.

  71. Sorry.

  72. We're a little bit out of order.

  73. Usually I read the Bible, I pray, and then you sit down.

  74. I understand that.

  75. I left the prayer part off because we're going to get to that in just a moment.

  76. And yeah, sorry about that.

  77. I just wanted to see what your all cardio levels are right now.

  78. Kidding with you.

  79. All right.

  80. So partnering with our church community together.

  81. Hey, I am amazed by the partnership that y'all just displayed by,

  82. well, they're still standing, so I guess I'll still stand.

  83. It's amazing.

  84. Somebody had to take the lead and say, okay.

  85. But fellowship together is a powerful, powerful force.

  86. And y'all, that's something that we cannot manufacture.

  87. You can't just create fellowship and see it happen.

  88. It has to really be born out of hearts coming together for the purpose of tearing down walls,

  89. learning more about each other, opening ourselves up.

  90. There's a layer of intimacy there.

  91. There's a layer of being willing to be hurt, being willing to be let down,

  92. or maybe even letting down someone else.

  93. But when we break down those walls, we can have Christian community by fellowshipping together.

  94. And then last Sunday, we talked about food.

  95. Talked about eating together.

  96. It was a lot of fun.

  97. And I can't tell you how many times later that week I had people from our church mentioning to me,

  98. hey, we're eating together.

  99. I just wanted to let you know at our D group on Wednesday night,

  100. we ate together and went to lunch with a family in our church right after the morning service.

  101. Said, you know, we talked about eating together.

  102. We should probably eat together.

  103. So it was great to talk about all the different instances in the Bible

  104. where Jesus would eat together with his disciples or with other people that were Jesus followers

  105. or even just in the community, publicans and sinners, the Bible calls them sometimes.

  106. But he knew that that fellowship is created when you eat together or break bread together.

  107. So the takeaway was, will I commit to unite with my church community by eating together?

  108. We do that in homes, gathering together with friends outside of our morning services,

  109. actually reaching across the aisle and saying, hey, would you like to come to dinner with me?

  110. Hey, I'd like to get to know you better.

  111. Hey, I'd like to become closer to you, my brother or sister in Christ.

  112. We also do that at our D groups.

  113. We have at least a snack.

  114. Sometimes I feel like what we had in our group on Wednesday night was a full meal.

  115. That was amazing.

  116. People brought stuff.

  117. The Clarks provided sandwiches.

  118. It was awesome.

  119. But we embrace that difficulty and that chore of providing food because it's worth it to eat together

  120. and the unity that comes from that.

  121. So today, the last one, we pray together.

  122. In some ways, you could say we saved the best for last.

  123. Back in Acts chapter 2 and verse 42,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  124. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship and to sharing in meals and to,

  125. what's that word?

  126. Oh, y'all can do better than that.

  127. What's that word?

  128. Prayer.

  129. That's right.

  130. They devoted themselves to prayer.

  131. So let's pray right now.

  132. Our good, kind, loving God.

  133. We're able to come to you in the name of Jesus and we're able to cry out to you to teach us because we need it, God.

  134. We crave your truth.

  135. We crave your teaching.

  136. We crave your Holy Spirit's guidance.

  137. Because without it, we wander off.

  138. We go astray.

  139. We are led by our own desires.

  140. We're led by our own thinking, our own priorities.

  141. And we always end up somewhere you don't want us to be.

  142. And we find out that's somewhere we don't want to be either.

  143. So God, pull us back.

  144. Throughout the morning, throughout the afternoon, throughout the evening, even in the middle of the night when we're awakened by thoughts,

  145. I pray that you would pull us back to your side, your presence in prayer.

  146. Make us aware of you as we go throughout our day.

  147. We see the fruit of it.

  148. We know the promises that await us when we turn to you in prayer.

  149. So God, individually and together as a church, make us a community of prayer.

  150. In Jesus' name, amen.

  151. I want to share this quote from you from Bible teacher John Bloom.

  152. He said,

  153. We don't pray enough because we don't really believe it will do much good.

  154. Now, if I took a poll of the room, y'all would probably unanimously, I'm guessing, there might be a couple folks who would vote otherwise,

  155. but more than likely, we would get a unanimous vote that says,

  156. We believe prayer works.

  157. We believe God answers prayer.

  158. We believe that prayer can do a lot of good.

  159. But unfortunately, you and I don't live as though we believe that.

  160. Because if we did, then we would follow Paul's teaching that says,

  161. Pray without ceasing.

  162. But we cease, don't we?

  163. For those of you who are wondering what ceasing means, it just means stop, okay?

  164. It's okay, don't feel bad.

  165. Nobody uses that word a lot anymore.

  166. But pray without stopping.

  167. We stop, don't we?

  168. We hang up the phone, so to speak.

  169. People are like, what does this mean?

  170. It's the old kind of telephone, alright?

  171. They had a receiver here and a receiver here.

  172. Yeah, there you go.

  173. Got it.

  174. So yeah, we hang up the phone with God sometimes.

  175. Frequently.

  176. And oftentimes, we don't go to Him when we feel like things are okay.

  177. We go to Him when there's trouble.

  178. When there's problems.

  179. When all of a sudden, we're made aware of our need for God.

  180. It isn't that we suddenly needed God.

  181. We needed Him the whole time, didn't we?

  182. But sometimes, we become more aware, like flashing lights in front of us.

  183. Hey, you can't handle this.

  184. You need God.

  185. Well, you needed Him five minutes ago, but you still need Him now.

  186. Now you're just more aware of it.

  187. So the truth is, you and I live so much of the time as though prayer doesn't really do that much good.

  188. And even sometimes when we pray, doubt chokes that prayer.

  189. We'll say the words.

  190. Because somewhere in our brains, we believe that, yes, I do have faith that God is there.

  191. I do have faith that God loves me.

  192. I did give my life to Him.

  193. I do believe I'm His child.

  194. And so in my head, I know that I should pray, so I'm going to.

  195. But is it really going to make a difference?

  196. Is He really going to do what I need Him to do?

  197. Thankfully, He never promises to do what you believe you need Him to do.

  198. Thankfully, He promises to act for your good.

  199. Thankfully, He promises to bring all things together for your good and for His glory.

  200. So we have that promise.

  201. So number one, prayer is the key ingredient.

  202. When we're trying to live a life that's honoring to God,

  203. when we're trying to have healthy community in our church,

  204. healthy unity in our church,

  205. getting together because we all believe in the same God,

  206. in the same way of salvation,

  207. there is no other name under heaven

  208. whereby we can be saved

  209. except the name of Jesus.

  210. And if you and I believe that,

  211. then we can have unity.

  212. We can have community.

  213. We can disagree on other things.

  214. But if we all have chosen the Jesus way

  215. and we are asking God to lead us another step down that path,

  216. then you and I can come together in this community

  217. and worship and follow Jesus together.

  218. So the number one key ingredient to be able to do that is prayer.

  219. You and I have to be prayed up.

  220. We have to be protected by prayer.

  221. We have to be guided by prayer.

  222. We have to be led by prayer.

  223. We have to be motivated by prayer.

  224. We have to be tethered to prayer.

  225. We have to be founded in prayer,

  226. grounded in prayer,

  227. surrounded by prayer.

  228. So prayer is the key ingredient.

  229. Let's look at a couple different ideas about prayer.

  230. Luke emphasized the likely writer of the book of Acts,

  231. although there have been some other theologians

  232. that believe maybe somebody else wrote Acts,

  233. maybe it was Paul,

  234. maybe wrote part of it,

  235. maybe somebody else contributed others.

  236. We know that it was inspired by God

  237. and provided and preserved in our word of God

  238. for our benefit.

  239. So the author of Acts emphasized

  240. that this was a community of prayer.

  241. They did not act by gut feelings or intuition,

  242. but by Holy Spirit guidance,

  243. actively submitting to the Lord's direction in their lives.

  244. So prayer is the key ingredient.

  245. Throughout the book of Acts,

  246. throughout the book of Acts,

  247. we see different kind of prayer.

  248. We see both free and formal prayer.

  249. Sometimes this was a gathering of prayer.

  250. Sometimes it was formalized in a prayer,

  251. like we see the Lord's Prayer.

  252. We did a study on the Lord's Prayer a long time ago,

  253. earlier in this year.

  254. Feels like a long time ago.

  255. It wasn't that long ago in actuality.

  256. But the Lord's Prayer is this formal prayer

  257. that is laid out in Scripture.

  258. Is it wrong to pray the Lord's Prayer to God?

  259. Of course not.

  260. Jesus gave us those words as a model prayer

  261. for how to pray,

  262. a guideline for how to pray,

  263. not selfishly, not self-serving,

  264. but a prayer that's honoring to God.

  265. So there are formal prayers.

  266. There are also free prayers.

  267. There are prayers that we can just,

  268. when we don't know what to say,

  269. God helps us.

  270. The Bible even says sometimes

  271. that when we don't know the words to say,

  272. Jesus will step in

  273. and take over and pray on our behalf.

  274. Isn't it amazing to think

  275. that Jesus is praying for you?

  276. But that is a promise in the Word of God,

  277. that Jesus is praying for you.

  278. How many times have you asked somebody else

  279. to pray for me?

  280. Say, pray for me.

  281. I'm going through something right now.

  282. Anybody or am I the only one?

  283. Anybody?

  284. Yeah, right?

  285. We ask for prayer.

  286. Have you ever asked God for prayer?

  287. God, would you pray for me?

  288. Well, we know He is.

  289. Jesus is actively praying or interceding,

  290. interceding, just a kind of a fancy term

  291. for stepping in and praying for someone

  292. in a powerful way for a specific reason,

  293. interceding on their behalf.

  294. So there are free prayers

  295. and there are formal prayers.

  296. There are also public prayers

  297. and private prayers.

  298. There's an example of this

  299. back in one of the parables

  300. Jesus was talking about

  301. how there was the Pharisee

  302. standing there in the temple

  303. in the full view of everyone

  304. and He's giving this big flowery prayer

  305. and He's wanting all the attention

  306. to come on Him.

  307. Now that's not the only way

  308. to pray in public.

  309. And if you're praying in public

  310. to impress somebody else

  311. with your grasp of the English language

  312. or your grasp of the Bible or theology,

  313. then you're not really praying,

  314. you're just spouting off words.

  315. And that's not doing anything.

  316. It's not getting any higher than the ceiling,

  317. you know, just kind of bouncing right there.

  318. But then, by contrast,

  319. there was the sinner

  320. who didn't pray in public.

  321. In that moment,

  322. he didn't feel like he even could.

  323. He got alone by himself

  324. and quietly,

  325. where no one could hear,

  326. muttered the words,

  327. God, be merciful to me,

  328. a sinner.

  329. Sometimes those are the moments

  330. we need in private.

  331. It's just, God,

  332. I'm a mess.

  333. I know I'm a mess.

  334. Maybe my spouse has reminded me

  335. that I'm a mess,

  336. but I know I'm a mess, you know.

  337. And you know most of all, God,

  338. that I'm a mess

  339. and yet you love me anyway

  340. and I stand forgiven in your sight.

  341. So thank you for forgiving me.

  342. I'm claiming your mercy right now.

  343. I'm claiming your grace right now.

  344. I don't know what else to do.

  345. Sometimes praying in public is okay.

  346. Throughout the book of Acts

  347. and even in the New Testament,

  348. we see instances of public prayer.

  349. Sometimes it's one person praying.

  350. Sometimes it's many people praying at once.

  351. But public and private prayer.

  352. Public prayer should never be self-serving.

  353. Should never be pointing all the attention to me.

  354. It should always be pointing the attention to God.

  355. And then there's personal and corporate prayer.

  356. You could say individual and corporate prayer.

  357. Sometimes you might be praying just by yourself.

  358. Sometimes you might be praying together

  359. as a body of believers.

  360. Oftentimes in our church,

  361. we are led by someone on stage

  362. at the microphone praying.

  363. And that's still corporate prayer.

  364. It's corporate public prayer.

  365. Corporate just means together.

  366. We're doing it together.

  367. So both personal, private, individual,

  368. and also corporate, together,

  369. joint, unified prayer.

  370. I think there's something powerful

  371. about a group of Christians

  372. gathered together

  373. and all praying

  374. at the same time.

  375. Now, this church

  376. is not an advocate of speaking in tongues.

  377. And sometimes,

  378. if everybody's in the room

  379. shouting different words

  380. all together at the same time,

  381. that's chaos.

  382. And God is not a God of chaos.

  383. He's not a God of disorder.

  384. He's a God of order.

  385. But regardless of your view

  386. on some of these issues,

  387. you must understand

  388. that praying together

  389. creates a bond of unity.

  390. And it doesn't all have to be

  391. one person praying at a time.

  392. Sometimes it can be.

  393. Because sometimes we want to all listen

  394. to what that person is praying

  395. on our behalf

  396. or the behalf of our community together.

  397. But sometimes,

  398. we just need to lift our voices

  399. quietly to God

  400. at the same time

  401. and pray to Him.

  402. He's capable of hearing it all.

  403. He's not going to get confused.

  404. He's able to single out

  405. and understand

  406. and process and answer.

  407. And He knows in advance

  408. what's on our heart.

  409. He knows in advance

  410. what our prayers

  411. are going to be about.

  412. They prayed together.

  413. They prayed corporately.

  414. They prayed on their own.

  415. And they prayed without ceasing.

  416. The book of Acts,

  417. this early church,

  418. these early Christians

  419. that were joined together

  420. as God is launching the church,

  421. getting prepared

  422. to spread it around the whole globe,

  423. and we are an individual

  424. example of that today.

  425. This church prayed in the temple.

  426. This church prayed in homes.

  427. This church prayed

  428. as they walked along the road.

  429. They prayed

  430. as they encountered sick people.

  431. And the Bible says

  432. the prayer of faith

  433. can heal the sick.

  434. They prayed

  435. before they preached sermons.

  436. They prayed

  437. while they heard sermons.

  438. They prayed

  439. before they heard sermons.

  440. They prayed

  441. after the preaching was over.

  442. They prayed

  443. while they were being persecuted.

  444. They prayed

  445. while the devil

  446. was attacking.

  447. They prayed

  448. while they were being harmed.

  449. Literally,

  450. while their bodies

  451. were physically being assaulted,

  452. they lifted up prayers

  453. to God.

  454. They were a community

  455. of prayer.

  456. They prayed

  457. for each other.

  458. They prayed

  459. before they ate their food

  460. to give thanks.

  461. They prayed

  462. and they thanked Jesus

  463. for forgiving

  464. their sins.

  465. They prayed

  466. for their daily needs.

  467. And they praised God

  468. through songs

  469. of prayer.

  470. we could go on.

  471. We could give

  472. far more examples

  473. of how this church

  474. prayed.

  475. You don't walk far

  476. in the book of Acts

  477. without stumbling

  478. over the church

  479. praying.

  480. Can I talk to our members

  481. and regular attenders

  482. just for a moment?

  483. If you're a guest with us,

  484. don't feel unwanted.

  485. I just want to talk

  486. to this group

  487. just for a second.

  488. If you're unhappy,

  489. with anything

  490. about our church,

  491. could it be traced back

  492. to the fact

  493. that we are not

  494. as praying a church

  495. as we could be?

  496. Could it be

  497. that we must be

  498. more of a community

  499. of prayer?

  500. If you've got something

  501. against another sister

  502. or brother in Christ,

  503. you say,

  504. man,

  505. I just wish

  506. we were better

  507. in this area.

  508. I wish our church

  509. was better in this area.

  510. What if we took

  511. that to God?

  512. What if we fought

  513. the battle

  514. from our knees?

  515. Just like the song

  516. we sang earlier

  517. said.

  518. Martin Luther,

  519. one of the great

  520. fathers of our faith

  521. said this.

  522. Let me get back up there.

  523. Prayer is a strong wall

  524. and a fortress

  525. of the church.

  526. It is the godly

  527. Christian's weapon.

  528. Now,

  529. why would you call

  530. prayer a weapon?

  531. You're trying to harm

  532. somebody?

  533. No.

  534. But like it or not,

  535. you and I,

  536. as Jesus followers,

  537. are in a spiritual

  538. battle.

  539. And if you don't

  540. arm yourself

  541. for that battle,

  542. then you will suffer

  543. needless,

  544. not defeats,

  545. because God

  546. has already won

  547. the ultimate battle.

  548. He's already won

  549. the war.

  550. But you will take

  551. shots,

  552. you will take

  553. hits

  554. that you didn't

  555. have to take

  556. if you aren't

  557. armed for the battle.

  558. Earlier in the year,

  559. we went through Ephesians

  560. and we talked

  561. for a Sunday

  562. about the armor

  563. of God

  564. and putting on

  565. the full armor

  566. of God

  567. and arming yourself

  568. for that spiritual

  569. battle.

  570. Prayer

  571. is first

  572. and foremost

  573. when you're

  574. arming yourself

  575. for the battle.

  576. It is a strong

  577. wall.

  578. It's the fortress

  579. of the church.

  580. And if you need

  581. a weapon

  582. to fight back

  583. your own flesh,

  584. if you need

  585. a weapon

  586. to fight back

  587. the attacks

  588. of Satan,

  589. if you need

  590. a weapon

  591. to fight back

  592. those who seem

  593. to want nothing

  594. but your destruction,

  595. prayer

  596. is the godly

  597. Christian's

  598. weapon.

  599. Now,

  600. let's look at this.

  601. Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4:23–32

  602. verses 23

  603. through 32.

  604. Would you turn over

  605. two chapters

  606. from Acts 2?

  607. Two chapters

  608. from Acts 2.

  609. We're looking at

  610. Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4:23–32

  611. verses 23

  612. through 32.

  613. Y'all,

  614. we do not have time

  615. to show you

  616. all the texts,

  617. all the Bible passages

  618. from that list

  619. of examples

  620. of how the church

  621. prayed.

  622. There are so many,

  623. like we said before,

  624. you don't get very far

  625. in Acts

  626. before you encounter

  627. the church praying.

  628. So if we're looking

  629. at the book of Acts

  630. as a template

  631. for how God

  632. wanted this church

  633. to be

  634. and how he wants

  635. our church to be,

  636. then we've got

  637. to model ourselves

  638. after their community,

  639. how did they

  640. commit themselves

  641. to prayer?

  642. We see a huge

  643. example of that

  644. right here

  645. in Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  646. and verse 23.

  647. after they were released,

  648. talking about

  649. Peter and John,

  650. they had been

  651. arrested for

  652. preaching the name

  653. of Jesus

  654. and then

  655. because the

  656. authorities feared

  657. uprising from the people

  658. because the message

  659. was so popular

  660. and spreading

  661. so much,

  662. this saving message

  663. of Jesus,

  664. they released them

  665. and so after they

  666. released,

  667. Peter and John

  668. went to their own

  669. people and reported

  670. everything the chief

  671. priests and the elders

  672. had said to them.

  673. When they heard this,

  674. they raised their voices

  675. together to God.

  676. What did they do?

  677. They prayed.

  678. First thing they did

  679. was pray.

  680. Master,

  681. you are the one

  682. who made the heaven,

  683. the earth,

  684. and the sea

  685. and everything in them.

  686. You said

  687. through the Holy Spirit

  688. by the mouth

  689. of our father,

  690. David,

  691. your servant,

  692. why do the Gentiles

  693. rage and the people's

  694. plot futile things?

  695. Y'all,

  696. do you realize

  697. they went directly

  698. to the scripture?

  699. They prayed the scriptures

  700. back to God.

  701. What a powerful,

  702. effective way

  703. of praying.

  704. The kings of the earth

  705. take their stand

  706. and the rulers

  707. assemble together

  708. against the Lord

  709. and against his Messiah.

  710. For in fact,

  711. in this city,

  712. both Herod

  713. and Pontius Pilate

  714. with the Gentiles

  715. and the people of Israel

  716. assembled together

  717. against your holy servant,

  718. Jesus,

  719. whom you anointed

  720. to do whatever

  721. your hand

  722. and your will

  723. had predestined

  724. to take place.

  725. They acknowledged

  726. God's sovereignty

  727. over it all.

  728. Said,

  729. God,

  730. you weren't surprised

  731. by any of this.

  732. We know that you

  733. predestined for Jesus

  734. to be killed.

  735. We know you predestined

  736. for us to be persecuted.

  737. It was your will.

  738. You allowed it to happen

  739. for your greater purposes.

  740. Verse 29.

  741. You ready?

  742. And now,

  743. Lord,

  744. consider their threats

  745. and grant that your servants

  746. may speak your word

  747. with all boldness

  748. while you stretch out

  749. your hand for healing

  750. and signs and wonders

  751. are performed

  752. through the name

  753. of your holy servant,

  754. Jesus.

  755. You know what they

  756. didn't pray for?

  757. The destruction

  758. of their enemies.

  759. They prayed

  760. for God's

  761. mighty purposes

  762. to be accomplished

  763. on this earth.

  764. They prayed

  765. for God's word

  766. to have favor.

  767. They prayed

  768. for people

  769. to be turned

  770. to the name

  771. of Jesus.

  772. That's what

  773. they prayed for.

  774. Verse 31.

  775. And when they

  776. had prayed,

  777. the place

  778. where they were

  779. assembled

  780. was shaken

  781. and they were

  782. all filled

  783. with the Holy Spirit

  784. and began

  785. to speak

  786. the word

  787. of God

  788. boldly

  789. and the entire

  790. group of those

  791. who believed,

  792. verse 32,

  793. were of one heart

  794. and one mind

  795. and no one claimed

  796. that any of his possessions

  797. was his own.

  798. They held everything

  799. in common.

  800. They were united

  801. by prayer.

  802. If you feel like

  803. there's fracture

  804. between you

  805. and another brother

  806. and sister in Christ,

  807. prayer can heal it.

  808. Uniting together,

  809. not over petty squabbles.

  810. Uniting together,

  811. not because I disagree

  812. in this area,

  813. you see it this way,

  814. I see it this way,

  815. uniting together

  816. by calling out

  817. to God together

  818. and saying,

  819. God,

  820. your will be done.

  821. God,

  822. your word

  823. have its way

  824. in this church

  825. and in this community.

  826. God,

  827. turn people

  828. to yourself

  829. and use me

  830. to do it.

  831. That's

  832. the Christian's

  833. weapon.

  834. We sang it

  835. just a moment ago,

  836. so when I fight,

  837. I'll fight on my knees.

  838. My hands lifted high

  839. because the battle

  840. belongs to you,

  841. God.

  842. But we don't do that,

  843. do we?

  844. We fight through emails.

  845. We fight through letters.

  846. We fight through social media posts.

  847. We fight by private conversations

  848. running down one another.

  849. We fight through gossip.

  850. We fight through anger.

  851. We fight through bitterness.

  852. We fight through resentment.

  853. We fight sometimes physically.

  854. But instead,

  855. God is waiting

  856. for us

  857. to turn to him

  858. and say,

  859. I'm going to use the weapon

  860. that he gave me to use.

  861. I'm going to use prayer.

  862. Because,

  863. believe it or not,

  864. God's a lot better

  865. at fighting his battles

  866. than you are.

  867. God's a lot better

  868. at fighting your battles

  869. than you are.

  870. So,

  871. if we need God

  872. to fight for us,

  873. we fall to our knees

  874. and we turn to him

  875. in prayer.

  876. And what does he promise?

  877. Exodus 14, 14,

  878. the Lord will fight for you.

  879. You need only to be still.

  880. You need to be still.

  881. You need to be quiet

  882. and let God fight for you.

  883. Psalm 46, 10,

  884. be still and know.

  885. I almost believe

  886. that carries the idea

  887. of remember.

  888. Be still and be aware.

  889. Remember and know

  890. that I'm God,

  891. not you.

  892. Not Sam Bunnell.

  893. Not a deacon.

  894. Not a trustee.

  895. Not a Sunday school teacher.

  896. There's no one

  897. in this church

  898. that is God.

  899. He alone

  900. is God.

  901. So,

  902. we have to be still

  903. and let him fight

  904. for us.

  905. We're going to be done.

  906. Y'all give me

  907. two minutes.

  908. Two minutes,

  909. alright?

  910. I don't want you

  911. to miss this.

  912. It's kind of

  913. the wrap up,

  914. the conclusion

  915. to our whole series

  916. here on community.

  917. the results

  918. of healthy community.

  919. We've seen

  920. the ingredients.

  921. We had

  922. eating together.

  923. We had

  924. studying truth together.

  925. We had

  926. fellowshipping together.

  927. And we had

  928. praying together.

  929. The results,

  930. we read it

  931. at the end

  932. of Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  933. All

  934. generosity,

  935. joy,

  936. and daily

  937. salvations.

  938. Those were the results

  939. when you combine

  940. those four ingredients

  941. into healthy

  942. community.

  943. Billy Graham,

  944. one of the greatest

  945. preachers we've ever

  946. seen in our day,

  947. said this,

  948. don't forget,

  949. without fuel,

  950. a fire grows cold.

  951. Well,

  952. of course,

  953. right?

  954. If you don't add fuel

  955. to a fire,

  956. it's going to die.

  957. And without the fuel

  958. of the Bible,

  959. prayer,

  960. and Christian fellowship,

  961. our faith

  962. grows cold.

  963. Church,

  964. can I suggest

  965. something to you?

  966. If you feel

  967. like your faith

  968. might be growing cold,

  969. it could be

  970. because you're

  971. missing the Bible,

  972. prayer,

  973. or Christian fellowship.

  974. Or if you're not sure

  975. that your faith

  976. is growing cold,

  977. but you're missing

  978. one of those areas

  979. in your life,

  980. I challenge you,

  981. see how much hotter

  982. your faith could burn

  983. for God

  984. if you prioritize

  985. the Bible,

  986. prayer,

  987. and Christian fellowship.

  988. All.

  989. Verse 43,

  990. back in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  991. in verse 43,

  992. everyone was filled

  993. with awe,

  994. many wonders

  995. and signs

  996. were being performed

  997. through the apostles.

  998. This was truly awesome.

  999. We call all kinds

  1000. of things awesome.

  1001. We might say,

  1002. you know,

  1003. the Cowboys looked awesome

  1004. when they played.

  1005. I hope that happens

  1006. again today.

  1007. I'm not sure

  1008. if it will.

  1009. We'll see.

  1010. They inevitably

  1011. let you down

1012. by the end of the season.

  1013. But what's truly awesome,

  1014. we throw that word

  1015. around so much,

  1016. right?

  1017. But what's truly awesome

  1018. is our God.

  1019. What's truly awesome

  1020. is a community

  1021. of believers

  1022. from all different

  1023. backgrounds

  1024. and walks of life

  1025. and belief systems

  1026. and races

  1027. and financial situations

  1028. and all of this,

  1029. all these differences,

  1030. political opinions,

  1031. et cetera,

  1032. just coming together

  1033. and praying together

  1034. and uniting

  1035. around the study

1036. of the word of God

1037. and crying out to God

  1038. in prayer

  1039. and fellowshipping together.

  1040. That is awesome.

1041. And they were in awe

  1042. when they saw

  1043. how God moved.

  1044. And then generosity.

  1045. Right there

  1046. throughout the rest

  1047. of chapter two,

1048. we see all these instances

  1049. where they were generous

  1050. to one another.

1051. They didn't hold anything back.

  1052. They weren't stingy.

1053. They shared whatever they had

  1054. because that is how

  1055. the Spirit of God

  1056. led them.

1057. So there was great awe.

  1058. There was generosity.

1059. And then there was joy.

  1060. Now we have joy.

1061. She works in the office

  1062. Monday through Thursday.

1063. And she brings great joy

  1064. to all of us.

  1065. But y'all,

  1066. joy was permeating

  1067. throughout this assembly.

  1068. Verses 46 and 47.

1069. Every day they devoted themselves

  1070. to meeting together

  1071. in the temple,

1072. broke bread from house to house.

  1073. They ate their food

1074. with joyful and sincere hearts.

  1075. They enjoyed the favor

  1076. of all the people.

  1077. This was a community

  1078. that was happy

1079. to be around each other.

  1080. Do you think

1081. that for the first time

  1082. in human history

  1083. these people agreed

1084. on every single little issue

  1085. in their life?

  1086. Of course not.

  1087. They were people

1088. just like the rest of us.

  1089. They would have

  1090. their petty squabbles

1091. but they set them aside

  1092. because they were

  1093. a community committed

  1094. to being a community.

  1095. So there was joy.

  1096. And then there was

  1097. daily salvations.

  1098. Y'all,

  1099. we've been having

  1100. salvations in our church.

  1101. Was it daily

1102. like the book of Acts?

  1103. No.

  1104. But God's still been

  1105. giving us salvations

  1106. in our church.

1107. We have one this week.

1108. She's going to come forward

1109. at the end of the service

1110. and introduce herself to you

1111. as a candidate for baptism

  1112. in a few weeks.

  1113. But listen y'all,

1114. God is moving in our church.

  1115. We're seeing people saved.

  1116. We're seeing people baptized.

  1117. We're seeing people publicly

  1118. choose the Jesus way.

  1119. That's the fruit

  1120. of community.

  1121. That's the fruit

  1122. of the Holy Spirit.

  1123. And the more

  1124. we commit ourselves

  1125. to prayer,

  1126. to fellowship,

  1127. and to the study

1128. of the Word of God,

  1129. we'll see more

  1130. of that fruit.

1131. I wanted to show you this.

  1132. Anybody recognize that?

  1133. The old one there

1134. was have it your way

  1135. for Burger King

1136. and now it's you rule.

  1137. They're both kind of

  1138. saying the same thing,

  1139. aren't they?

  1140. You're in charge.

1141. You do what you think

  1142. is best for you.

  1143. Can I remind you

  1144. that that runs

  1145. completely opposite

  1146. to God's commandments.

  1147. That might work

  1148. at Burger King

  1149. and that's great

1150. if you want to customize

  1151. your hamburger.

1152. But in the kingdom of God,

  1153. you don't rule.

  1154. I don't rule.

  1155. God rules.

  1156. We must follow

  1157. His ingredients

1158. if we want to see

  1159. a healthy community

  1160. of believers

  1161. in this church.

  1162. We must recommit

  1163. ourselves

  1164. to His way.

  1165. If you cling

  1166. to your life,

  1167. you will lose it.

  1168. If you give up

  1169. your life for me,

  1170. you will find it.

  1171. So,

  1172. our takeaway

  1173. will be done.

  1174. My two minutes

  1175. turned into six.

  1176. Apologize.

  1177. This is it.

  1178. Last one.

  1179. And we're going to

1180. start a brand new series

  1181. next Sunday

  1182. on Be a Disciple.

  1183. Very excited about that.

  1184. Healthy community

1185. will only bear its fruit

  1186. in our church

  1187. if we individually

  1188. recommit ourselves

  1189. or maybe commit

  1190. for the first time

  1191. to what?

  1192. To prayer,

  1193. to God's word,

  1194. and to true fellowship

  1195. together.

  1196. Folks,

  1197. you might not

  1198. realize it,

  1199. but if you have

  1200. a spirit

  1201. of disunity

  1202. in your heart,

  1203. you might be

  1204. holding up

  1205. the work of God

  1206. from having its way

  1207. in our church.

  1208. I plead with you

1209. to get on your knees

  1210. before God

  1211. and humble yourself

  1212. before God

  1213. and say,

  1214. God,

  1215. I'm recommitting myself

  1216. to prayer,

  1217. to what your word

  1218. teaches,

  1219. and to our fellowship

  1220. together as a community

  1221. of believers.

  1222. And then I believe

  1223. God can move powerfully

  1224. like he's been doing.

1225. Don't you want to see

  1226. the floodgates of heaven

  1227. opened up?

1228. Don't you want to see

  1229. the walls torn down

  1230. and God's blessings

  1231. pour out

1232. and see what he could do

  1233. with our community?

1234. I want to see that.

1235. I want to be a part of it.

1236. So would you join me

  1237. in praying?

  1238. Let's bow our heads

  1239. right now.

  1240. Let's bow our heads

  1241. right now.

1242. And I want to ask this.

  1243. Right where you're seated,

  1244. Jared's going to play

1245. a little bit of music

  1246. right where you're seated.

  1247. If God leads you,

  1248. would you quietly

1249. lift up a prayer to God?

1250. I want to emphasize quietly.

  1251. If we're all speaking

  1252. at the same time,

  1253. it would be hard

  1254. to keep our minds

1255. focused on what we're saying

  1256. and thinking right now.

1257. But would you just quietly,

  1258. out loud,

1259. lift up a prayer to God?

  1260. Maybe for you,

  1261. for a situation

  1262. you're dealing with,

1263. maybe for our entire church.

  1264. just say,

  1265. God,

  1266. work in me.

  1267. Use me

  1268. right now

  1269. to bless someone else.

  1270. Use me.

  1271. Maybe my physical possessions.

  1272. Maybe God wants me

  1273. to share something

  1274. with someone else

  1275. and be generous.

  1276. maybe God wants me

  1277. to be more faithful

  1278. in building my walk

  1279. with Him in prayer.

  1280. Maybe God wants me

  1281. to take the plunge

1282. and unite with this church

  1283. and church membership.

  1284. Partner with us

1285. in what God's doing here.

  1286. Take on a

  1287. meaningful role

  1288. of service

  1289. in this church.

  1290. maybe God's

  1291. wanting me

  1292. to get baptized

  1293. publicly,

  1294. declare myself

  1295. as a Jesus follower

  1296. and be held accountable

  1297. to this church

  1298. for walking

  1299. the Jesus way.

  1300. Maybe God wants you

  1301. to recommit yourself

1302. to studying the Word of God

  1303. and turning to it

  1304. every day,

  1305. letting it teach us,

  1306. letting it change us

  1307. and transform us.

1308. Maybe He's talking to you

  1309. about turning to Him

  1310. more often in prayer,

1311. never hanging up the phone.

  1312. Maybe He's talking about

  1313. asking forgiveness

1314. for a brother or sister

  1315. in Christ.

  1316. Maybe you feel like

  1317. you were wronged

  1318. but you responded

  1319. in the wrong spirit

1320. and you've got to go

  1321. make that right,

1322. not for that person's benefit

  1323. but for God's benefit,

  1324. for your benefit,

  1325. for the benefit

  1326. of our community together

  1327. as brothers and sisters

  1328. in Christ.

  1329. God keeps a record.

  1330. He'll right all wrongs.

  1331. He'll have justice.

  1332. That belongs to Him.

  1333. Whatever God's working

  1334. on you about,

1335. I'm going to start praying

1336. up here at the front.

1337. If you'd turn my mic off

  1338. and anyone else

1339. who wants to join me

  1340. from where you're seated,

1341. would you just lift up

  1342. a prayer?

  1343. Amen.

  1344. Amen.

  1345. Amen.

  1346. Amen.

  1347. Amen.

  1348. Amen.

  1349. Amen.

  1350. Amen.

  1351. Amen.

  1352. Amen.

  1353. Amen.

  1354. Amen.

  1355. Amen.

  1356. Amen.

  1357. Amen.

  1358. Amen.

  1359. Amen.

  1360. Amen.

  1361. Amen.

  1362. Amen.

  1363. Amen.

  1364. Amen.

  1365. Amen.

  1366. Amen.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. Amen.

  1369. Amen.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Amen.

  1372. Amen.

  1373. Amen.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Amen.

  1379. Amen.

  1380. Amen.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.
