  1. Are you in service so far this morning?

  2. Amen. I have too.

  3. I'm grateful to see all of you who were able to join us in person here this morning,

  4. as well as I want to welcome you, those who are joining online,

  5. and thank you for participating.

  6. We know many watch every Sunday who can't be here in person.

  7. Would you take the Word of God with me and turn to the book of Luke, chapter 9?

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  8. We'll read verse 23 together.

  9. Luke, chapter 9, and verse 23.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  10. Have you ever heard somebody say, what would Jesus do?

  11. You ever had a little WWJD bracelet?

  12. Yeah? Seen something like that? That was a fad for a while.

  13. And it was really based on a book by Charles Sheldon called In His Steps.

  14. And it was interesting that many, many years ago, back in the 1800s,

  15. through the ministry of William Booth and the Salvation Army,

  16. there really became a groundswell of people who were commonly asking themselves and each other the question,

  17. what would Jesus do?

  18. We need to be more like Jesus.

  19. Well, last Sunday morning and then again in the evening,

  20. our choir sang a song called The Jesus Way.

  21. How many of y'all were here for that?

  22. How many of y'all, that song blessed you?

  23. Me too.

  24. That's a song that's been around just a couple of years now,

  25. and it is a powerful song.

  26. It says, I choose the Jesus Way.

  27. So as we start a brand new series here in the life of our church on Sunday mornings called Be a Disciple,

  28. the first part of that that I would like to draw our attention to is choosing the Jesus Way.

  29. Have you ever heard somebody say,

  30. well, that's not the Christian thing to do.

  31. That's not the Jesus Way.

  32. That's true.

  33. It's a phrase we often hear, but what does it really mean?

  34. Today we're going to explore what the Jesus Way is,

  35. what that pathway looks like that Christ, the Son of God, laid out for us to follow.

  36. It is a way that leads to a fulfilling and abundant life.

  37. Would you stand with me if you're able to,

  38. and let's read Luke chapter 9, verses 23 through 25.

    Luke 9:23–25

  39. Luke chapter 9, verses 23 through 25.

    Luke 9:23–25

  40. Then he said to them all,

  41. If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself.

  42. Take up his cross daily and follow me.

  43. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it.

  44. But whoever loses his life because of me will save it.

  45. For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world and yet loses or forfeits himself?

  46. Would you pray with me?

  47. God, I pray that you would speak to us from your word this morning.

  48. Let no one leave this house today having missed something that the Holy Spirit had for them.

  49. God, if there's someone here who has not yet chosen the Jesus Way,

  50. giving their life to you,

  51. let them make that life-changing decision this morning before they leave.

  52. God, for so many of us in this room who have made that decision of turning from sin and turning to Jesus,

  53. we've become your children.

  54. I pray that we would once again recommit ourselves to the Jesus Way and walk in it.

  55. It's in your name we pray.

  56. Amen.

  57. You may be seated.

  58. Thank you for standing.

  59. How many of you go back to English literature, American literature?

  60. How many of you all remember back in school when you studied literature?

  61. Anybody?

  62. Anybody?

  63. That few.

  64. Wow.

  65. Chiquita Graves is very disappointed in the rest of you

  66. because she had so many of you in class, all right?

  67. Well, how many of you would recognize this name?

  68. Robert Frost.

  69. There.

  70. Okay, good.

  71. We had more hands up.

  72. Don't worry.

  73. They remember.

  74. Robert Frost, one of the foremost American poets,

  75. and he wrote a very, very famous poem,

  76. and part of it goes like this.

  77. Two roads diverged in a wood,

  78. and I, I took the one less traveled by,

  79. and that has made all the difference.

  80. I bring that to you because we can often learn

  81. from all kinds of different things in the world.

  82. We can learn from history.

  83. We can learn from science.

  84. We can certainly learn from literature,

  85. and I want to draw the attention to that phrase,

  86. the road less traveled.

  87. The road less traveled.

  88. Can I assure you that the Jesus way is the road less traveled?

  89. High school students, junior high students,

  90. college students, even elementary students,

  91. the Jesus way in your school is the road less traveled.

  92. You will often feel like you are alone

  93. in walking the Jesus way,

  94. but it will make all the difference.

  95. So I'm challenging us this morning from the word of God

  96. to be a disciple,

  97. and step number one according to Luke chapter nine

  98. in being a disciple is following Jesus,

  99. choosing the Jesus way.

  100. So let's look back at Luke chapter nine and verse 23.

  101. He said to all of them,

  102. if anyone wants to follow after me,

  103. and then he gives the steps to do so.

  104. But first we must make a decision that we choose to follow.

  105. We choose to be a disciple.

  106. We choose the Jesus way,

  107. and then we can see what all that entails.

  108. But let's look at what the Jesus way is.

  109. Number one, if you're taking notes in your bulletin this morning,

  110. the Jesus way is a way of love.

  111. The Jesus way is a way of love.

  112. Have you ever heard people say,

  113. man, I don't like those kind of churches

  114. that just talk about God's love all the time,

  115. and they never talk about sin.

  116. Anybody ever heard that?

  117. All you ever do is focus on the love of God,

  118. and that's it.

  119. Can I tell you something?

  120. If there is a church

  121. that is focusing on the love of God,

  122. and you come away feeling like that,

  123. then that church is not accurately preaching on the love of God.

  124. Because the love of God should be the most convicting,

  125. challenging, exposing attribute of God to us.

  126. It should convict us of how little love we show.

  127. It should call us to sacrifice.

  128. It should call us to lay down our lives.

  129. It should call us to turn from sin,

  130. turn from self,

  131. and turn to Jesus for the sake of others.

  132. That is the way of love.

  133. That is the Jesus way.

  134. The Jesus way is a way of love,

  135. and that love will make you turn from sin.

  136. That love will make you turn from self.

  137. John chapter 13 says this,

    John 13 chapter mention

  138. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples

  139. if you love one another.

  140. You know what the main problem

  141. with why Christianity or the church in America

  142. isn't as effective as it should be?

  143. It's not God's fault.

  144. Funny thing is,

  145. it's not even the lost world around us' fault.

  146. It's Christians' fault.

  147. It's our fault.

  148. Just realized I hadn't turned that on.

  149. I'm so sorry.

  150. Y'all, we have a,

  151. how old is your mother?

  152. 97.

  153. We have a 97-year-old lady

  154. who's just started coming recently,

  155. and she comes because she's,

  156. we've got a hearing device that helps her hear,

  157. and I've got this little thing

  158. that I hook up and turn on,

  159. and it helps her hear,

  160. and she's just so happy to be back in worship,

  161. hearing church and worship music and all that.

  162. So, yeah, that is something to get excited about.

  163. All right, let me go back and start over, okay?

  164. I'm just kidding.

  165. You didn't miss that much.

  166. Hopefully you were able to hear some.

  167. By this, everyone will know

  168. that you are my disciples

  169. if you love one another.

  170. There are all kinds of ways of showing love.

  171. Sometimes it might be wearing a little microphone

  172. when you preach.

  173. Sometimes it might be going out

  174. at Pioneer Union on Saturday

  175. and handing out water bottles

  176. before the parade starts.

  177. Sometimes it might be sacrificing something

  178. for the good of someone else.

  179. Sometimes it might be putting yourself

  180. into an uncomfortable situation

  181. and bringing up that big no-no,

  182. because we don't talk about politics

  183. and we don't talk about religion with people, right?

  184. Because that just gets into arguments and fights.

  185. But bringing up the love of God to people

  186. and what God has done in your life,

  187. that might be one of the best ways

  188. that you can show love.

  189. And if we show love,

  190. then they'll know

  191. that we're His disciples.

  192. Because the world around us

  193. tries to show love, don't they?

  194. They think they've got love figured out.

  195. They think they've cornered the market on love,

  196. but their love is so self-centered.

  197. Their love is either lust,

  198. it's either ego,

  199. it's either wanting to make myself

  200. feel good about myself.

  201. Whatever their love is,

  202. it is not an accurate picture

  203. of God's love to us.

  204. So if we show the Jesus way of love,

  205. then they'll know

  206. that there's something different.

  207. We are His disciples.

  208. The Jesus way is a way of love.

  209. Matthew 22 and verse 39 says,

  210. this is the cornerstone

  211. of the Jesus way.

  212. He says this,

  213. love your neighbor as yourself.

  214. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  215. On this hangs all the other commandments.

  216. You must love God.

  217. And if you love God,

  218. then you will love your neighbor as yourself.

  219. If you find yourself not loving your neighbor

  220. like you should,

  221. then you may want to back up and see,

  222. huh,

  223. probably not loving God like I should either.

  224. Because if I did,

  225. then I wouldn't have such a hard time loving my neighbor.

  226. Even when your neighbor mistreats you.

  227. Even when your neighbor doesn't deserve it.

  228. Even when your neighbor has crossed you,

  229. has hurt you,

  230. time and time again,

  231. you still show love.

  232. The disciples asked Jesus,

  233. how many times are we supposed to forgive?

  234. How many times are we supposed to give people another chance?

  235. And Jesus made the point,

  236. 70 times 7,

  237. but y'all,

  238. when you hit 70 times 7,

  239. you're supposed to keep forgiving.

  240. You're supposed to keep giving

  241. more and more chances

  242. out of a heart of love.

  243. Love is not just a feeling.

  244. It's so easy when you're in a dating relationship,

  245. you're engaged,

  246. you're newly married,

  247. it's so easy to identify love

  248. as that warm, fuzzy feeling.

  249. But it's so much more than that.

  250. Love is a decision

  251. that you renew

  252. moment by moment,

  253. day after day.

  254. I will continue to love

  255. in spite of whether it's earned,

  256. whether it's deserved,

  257. because God loved me

  258. when I didn't earn it.

  259. I didn't deserve it.

  260. It's not just a feeling.

  261. It's an action.

  262. It's a decision.

  263. It's putting others before yourself.

  264. The Jesus way is a way of love.

  265. Number two,

  266. the Jesus way is a way of sacrifice.

  267. The Jesus way is a way of sacrifice.

  268. Y'all, you can't have love

  269. without sacrifice.

  270. The minute you're in a relationship

  271. and you get to the point

  272. where you have to sacrifice,

  273. and all of a sudden

  274. you start growing

  275. less engaged

  276. with that relationship,

  277. feeling like,

  278. huh, I'm not sure

  279. it's worth it.

  280. You can take it to the bank

  281. that that wasn't really love.

  282. That wasn't love.

  283. Because real love

  284. puts others

  285. before ourselves.

  286. Real love says,

  287. I will lay down

  288. whatever I need to lay down.

  289. I will give up

  290. whatever I need to give up

  291. for the good

  292. of the person I love.

  293. The Jesus way

  294. is a way of sacrifice.

  295. Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  296. and verse 45,

  297. the New International Reader's Version

  298. says it this way.

  299. It's kind of a paraphrase.

  300. I like how it phrases it here.

  301. He did not come

  302. to be served.

  303. Talking about Jesus.

  304. Jesus did not come

  305. to be served.

  306. Instead,

  307. He came to serve others.

  308. He came to give His life.

  309. Your Bible might say ransom.

  310. And I love how it kind of

  311. portrays what ransom is.

  312. He came to give His life

  313. as the price

  314. for setting many people free.

  315. What is the price

  316. of your love?

  317. What is the cost

  318. of your love?

  319. And if your love for God

  320. hasn't cost you something,

  321. then maybe it's not real love.

  322. If your love for God

  323. has not sacrificed

  324. something in your life,

  325. then maybe it's not real love.

  326. Maybe it's very shallow.

  327. Jesus came to give it all

  328. as the price

  329. for setting you free,

  330. setting me free.

  331. So,

  332. the Jesus way

  333. is a way of sacrifice.

  334. Matthew 20 and verse 28

  335. said,

  336. Jesus came not to be served,

  337. but to serve.

  338. Jesus washed His disciples' feet.

  339. We read that He humbled Himself,

  340. took upon Him the form of a servant,

  341. was made in the likeness of men,

  342. and being found in fashion as a man,

  343. He humbled Himself,

  344. He laid down His life,

  345. He was obedient to the Father,

  346. and then He was raised from the dead.

  347. And now God has highly exalted Him

  348. and has given Him a name

  349. above every other name

  350. because He took upon Him

  351. the form of a servant,

  352. because He laid down His life,

  353. because He sacrificed,

  354. because He humbled Himself,

  355. because He made Himself

  356. as less than.

  357. But we don't like doing that,

  358. do we?

  359. We like to lift ourselves up

  360. as high as we possibly can.

  361. Jesus is calling you

  362. to sacrifice that.

  363. If you want to choose

  364. the Jesus way,

  365. then it's a way of sacrifice.

  366. He came to give His life

  367. as the price.

  368. Number three,

  369. the Jesus way is a way of love,

  370. it's a way of sacrifice,

  371. and it's a way of transformation.

  372. The Jesus way

  373. is a way of transformation.

  374. Would you look over

  375. in Romans chapter 9 with me?

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  376. Romans chapter 9,

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  377. let's look at verse 19.

  378. Romans chapter 9,

    Romans 9:19

  379. verse 19.

  380. We just got done reading

  381. in verse 18.

  382. He has mercy on whom God,

  383. God has mercy on whom

  384. He wants to have mercy.

  385. He hardens whom He wants to harden.

  386. God is sovereign.

  387. He's in charge of it all.

  388. You might think you've figured out

  389. how to have one up on God

  390. and you don't.

  391. Okay?

  392. God's in charge of it all.

  393. You might think that

  394. you're living your life

  395. apart from God's power and will,

  396. but you are not.

  397. He is in charge.

  398. So verse 19,

  399. You will say to me,

  400. therefore,

  401. why then does God

  402. still find fault?

  403. For who can resist His will?

  404. But who are you,

  405. a mere man,

  406. to talk back to God?

  407. Will what is formed

  408. say to the one

  409. who formed it,

  410. why did you make me like this?

  411. Verse 21,

  412. Or the potter has no right

  413. over the clay

  414. to make from the same lump

  415. one piece of pottery

  416. for honor

  417. and another for dishonor.

  418. Don't forget that part

  419. we just read

  420. about the potter

  421. and the clay.

  422. And what if God,

  423. wanting to display His wrath

  424. and to make His power known,

  425. endured with much patience

  426. objects of wrath

  427. prepared for destruction?

  428. Verse 23,

  429. What if He did this

  430. to make known

  431. the riches of His glory

  432. on objects of mercy?

  433. That would be you and me

  434. as children of God.

  435. That He prepared beforehand

  436. for glory on us.

  437. Verse 24,

  438. The ones He also called

  439. not only from the Jews,

  440. but also from the Gentiles.

  441. Now there's a lot of theology

  442. in this passage.

  443. And if this was a seminary course,

  444. then I could take you through

  445. what I went through in seminary

  446. and Bible college

  447. and have studied since then.

  448. And we could dive into

  449. the rich soteriology

  450. or the doctrine of salvation.

  451. And what does God have to say

  452. in the Bible

  453. about how we're saved?

  454. We could dive into

  455. all these points

  456. in this passage

  457. about salvation.

  458. But for our purposes today,

  459. I want to draw your attention

  460. to the fact

  461. that we read from this

  462. that God is molding the clay.

  463. Some clay

  464. will be useful to Him

  465. and some will not.

  466. But He's molding all of us.

  467. Some will be vessels of honor.

  468. Some will be vessels of glory.

  469. Objects of mercy.

  470. And some will be objects

  471. for destruction.

  472. So,

  473. the ultimate goal

  474. of the Jesus way

  475. is not as much

  476. about what we do

  477. as it is

  478. about who we become.

  479. who God is making us to be.

  480. Now,

  481. I promise you,

  482. that concept

  483. is different

  484. than what you may have heard

  485. or believed

  486. for most of your life

  487. as a Christian.

  488. Because if there's one

  489. error

  490. that so many

  491. of our churches

  492. have made over the years,

  493. it's that

  494. not necessarily

  495. in our words,

  496. although sometimes

  497. in our words,

  498. but definitely

  499. in our practice

  500. as churches,

  501. we emphasize

  502. that God

  503. is more interested

  504. in what you do

  505. than who you are.

  506. And that is

  507. completely backwards.

  508. God is not impressed

  509. by our works.

  510. He never has been.

  511. He never will be.

  512. He is only impressed

  513. by how much

  514. of ourselves

  515. we give up

  516. to Him.

  517. And then

  518. He can do the works

  519. through us.

  520. And then

  521. He gets the glory,

  522. not us.

  523. When God

  524. does something

  525. in your life,

  526. it's transforming.

  527. That means

  528. you change

  529. from one form

  530. into another.

  531. How transformed

  532. are you

  533. after however

  534. many years

  535. you've been

  536. walking

  537. with Jesus.

  538. I love

  539. that we have

  540. many,

  541. let's say,

  542. veteran Christians

  543. in our church.

  544. People have been

  545. saved a while.

  546. Okay?

  547. I love

  548. the children

  549. that we have

  550. turning to Jesus

  551. at young ages.

  552. Jesus said,

  553. let the little children

  554. come to me.

  555. And so,

  556. by God's grace,

  557. 50 years from now,

  558. 60 years from now,

  559. 70 years from now,

  560. some of these kids

  561. will still be in churches

  562. and they'll be the

  563. veteran Christians.

  564. You know what I mean?

  565. But I'm not impressed

  566. by how long

  567. you've been

  568. a child of God.

  569. What amazes me

  570. is how much

  571. God has transformed

  572. you over that time.

  573. Are you the same

  574. person now

  575. as you were

  576. 10 years ago?

  577. 20 years ago?

  578. 30 years ago?

  579. 5 years ago?

  580. Last year?

  581. Or has God

  582. been transforming

  583. you along the way?

  584. Are you more

  585. like Jesus now?

  586. Are you more loving?

  587. Are you more kind?

  588. Do you sacrifice more?

  589. Are you more

  590. like Jesus

  591. now

  592. than when

  593. it first began?

  594. The Jesus way

  595. is a way

  596. of transformation.

  597. If you're not

  598. ready for that,

  599. then you might

  600. want to hold off

  601. on calling yourself

  602. a disciple.

  603. But if you want

  604. to be my disciple,

  605. then you've got

  606. to choose

  607. to follow

  608. me.

  609. And he will

  610. lead you places

  611. that you could

  612. never dream of.

  613. He will lead you

  614. places that

  615. will transform you.

  616. He will show you

  617. things and teach

  618. you things

  619. that will change

  620. you from the

  621. inside out.

  622. So we read

  623. back in Romans

  624. 9

  625. about this

  626. fascinating

  627. description

  628. of the potter

  629. and the clay.

  630. And there's a couple

  631. things that jump

  632. out to me here.

  633. Number one,

  634. the clay has

  635. no rights

  636. of its own.

  637. The clay

  638. has no rights

  639. of its own.

  640. Do you see

  641. back in

  642. Romans 9

  643. and verse

  644. 19,

  645. who can resist

  646. his will?

  647. Verse 20,

  648. who are you,

  649. a mere man,

  650. to talk back

  651. to God?

  652. Will what is

  653. formed say

  654. to the one

  655. who formed

  656. it,

  657. why did you

  658. make me

  659. like this?

  660. Can you

  661. imagine a

  662. potter at his

  663. potter's wheel

  664. forming something,

  665. forming a jar,

  666. and then the jar

  667. says,

  668. man,

  669. I wanted to be

  670. a serving dish.

  671. I didn't want

  672. to be a jar.

  673. Well,

  674. the clay's not

  675. in charge,

  676. is it?

  677. It doesn't get

  678. to choose

  679. what it's going

  680. to be.

  681. It has to

  682. conform itself

  683. to the will

  684. of the potter.

  685. The clay has

  686. no rights

  687. of its own.

  688. But how often

  689. have you and I

  690. said to our

  691. potter,

  692. why did you

  693. do this to me?

  694. Why did you

  695. make me like this?

  696. Because he's

  697. got a grand

  698. and glorious

  699. will for you.

  700. And if you

  701. walk closely

  702. with him,

  703. you don't have

  704. to go out

  705. there and

  706. fight and

  707. scratch and

  708. figure out

  709. what exactly

  710. you're supposed

  711. to be and

  712. how your life's

  713. supposed to go.

  714. God will

  715. lead you

  716. by his

  717. spirit.

  718. You just

  719. have to

  720. concentrate

  721. on being

  722. close to

  723. him,

  724. being submissive

  725. to him,

  726. learning to

  727. love him

  728. and love

  729. like he

  730. loves.

  731. Romans

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  732. chapter 9

  733. and verse

  734. 20 through

  735. 24 gets

  736. a little bit

  737. further in

  738. to this

  739. clay.

  740. In this

  741. potter

  742. example,

  743. number one,

  744. the clay

  745. has no

  746. rights of

  747. its own.

  748. Number two,

  749. the clay

  750. has unseen

  751. potential.

  752. Unseen

  753. potential.

  754. You look

  755. at this

  756. lump of

  757. clay

  758. and to

  759. me,

  760. it looks

  761. like mud

  762. that should

  763. be discarded.

  764. To me,

  765. it looks

  766. like it

  767. has no

  768. use.

  769. But in

  770. the hands

  771. of a

  772. master

  773. potter,

  774. he sees

  775. what it

  776. could be.

  777. And that

  778. is the

  779. wonderful,

  780. reassuring

  781. hope that

  782. you and

  783. I have

  784. that even

  785. though some

  786. people might

  787. look down

  788. on us,

  789. even though

  790. some people

  791. might criticize,

  792. even though

  793. some people

  794. might ignore,

  795. they might

  796. marginalize,

  797. they might

  798. think that

  799. you have no

  800. potential,

  801. no future,

  802. God sees

  803. it all.

  804. He sees

  805. the truth.

  806. and the

  807. truth is

  808. stronger than

  809. those lies.

  810. You have

  811. unseen

  812. potential.

  813. Even your

  814. family might

  815. not see.

  816. Even your

  817. spouse might

  818. not see.

  819. Even yourself

  820. might not

  821. see.

  822. But God

  823. sees it.

  824. And out of

  825. his heart

  826. of love,

  827. he's just

  828. waiting for

  829. you to

  830. submit yourself

  831. to his

  832. hands so

  833. he can

  834. mold you

  835. into something

  836. beautiful.

  837. He calls

  838. it a

  839. vessel

  840. of

  841. glory,

  842. an object

  843. of mercy.

  844. Verse 22,

  845. what if he

  846. did this

  847. to make

  848. known the

  849. riches of

  850. his glory

  851. on objects

  852. of mercy

  853. that he

  854. prepared

  855. beforehand

  856. for glory?

  857. God is

  858. preparing you

  859. for glory.

  860. Don't

  861. exchange it

  862. for something

  863. less.

  864. Don't

  865. give up

  866. the glory

  867. that God

  868. has waiting

  869. for you

  870. for something

  871. temporary,

  872. something

  873. shallow,

  874. something so

  875. meaningless.

  876. The clay

  877. has unseen

  878. potential.

  879. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  880. chapter 2

  881. and verse 13

  882. puts it this

  883. way,

  884. it is God

  885. who works

  886. in you

  887. both to

  888. will and

  889. to work

  890. for his

  891. good pleasure.

  892. Submit

  893. yourself to

  894. God's good

  895. pleasure and

  896. he will work

  897. in you,

  898. he will work

  899. through you

  900. for your

  901. good and

  902. for his

  903. glory.

  904. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  905. chapter 3,

  906. we're almost

  907. done.

  908. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  909. chapter 3

  910. and verse

  911. 18.

  912. The Lord

  913. who is the

  914. spirit makes

  915. us more

  916. and more

  917. like him

  918. as we are

  919. changed into

  920. his glorious

  921. image.

  922. Do you see

  923. the transformation

  924. there?

  925. Choosing the

  926. Jesus way is a

  927. way of

  928. transformation.

  929. transformation.

  930. When you

  931. turn from

  932. your sin

  933. and you

  934. turn to

  935. Jesus

  936. and you

  937. hear the

  938. gospel preached,

  939. gospel,

  940. that's just

  941. the word

  942. that tells

  943. us the

  944. good news

  945. of Jesus

  946. that you

  947. and I

  948. were sinners.

  949. We still

  950. are by the

  951. way.

  952. We were

  953. born into

  954. sin.

  955. We had

  956. no hope

  957. to redeem

  958. ourselves,

  959. to fix

  960. ourselves.

  961. But Jesus

  962. in his

  963. goodness and

  964. his love

  965. laid down

  966. his throne

  967. and came

  968. to heaven

  969. humbled

  970. himself,

  971. took on

  972. human form,

  973. was born

  974. of the

  975. Virgin Mary.

  976. We got

  977. Christmas

  978. coming up

  979. before you

  980. know it.

  981. The whole

  982. world is going

  983. to be talking

  984. about Jesus'

  985. birth.

  986. And then

  987. he grew

  988. up and

  989. he performed

  990. many miracles,

  991. showed that

  992. he was God

  993. time and

  994. time again.

  995. And you

  996. know who

  997. hated him,

  998. right?

  999. The religious

  1000. people hated

  1001. him.

  1002. That's who

  1003. couldn't stand

  1004. Jesus.

  1005. But then

  1006. he willingly

  1007. laid down

  1008. his life

  1009. and allowed

  1010. himself to

  1011. be put

  1012. to death

  1013. because that

  1014. was the

  1015. plan from

  1016. the beginning.

  1017. All along

  1018. he laid

  1019. down his

  1020. life,

  1021. he was

  1022. crucified,

  1023. gave it

  1024. up,

  1025. but he

  1026. didn't stay

  1027. dead.

  1028. We're not

  1029. singing to

  1030. a dead

  1031. God on

  1032. Sundays.

  1033. We're not

  1034. praying to

  1035. a dead

  1036. God.

  1037. He's

  1038. alive,

  1039. he hears

  1040. us three

  1041. days and

  1042. three nights

  1043. later,

  1044. Jesus arose

  1045. from the

  1046. dead.

  1047. We talk

  1048. about it

  1049. at Easter

  1050. time,

  1051. right?

  1052. Two most

  1053. powerful,

  1054. momentous,

  1055. transformational

  1056. moments in

  1057. history.

  1058. Jesus' birth

  1059. and Jesus'

  1060. death,

  1061. resurrection.

  1062. So,

  1063. that's the

  1064. gospel.

  1065. And now

  1066. he says,

  1067. if you just

  1068. simply turn to

  1069. me,

  1070. say,

  1071. God,

  1072. I believe,

  1073. I put my

  1074. faith in

  1075. you,

  1076. I believe you

  1077. came,

  1078. I believe you

  1079. died,

  1080. I believe you

  1081. rose,

  1082. I believe you

  1083. love me,

  1084. I believe you

  1085. will forgive me,

  1086. then you can be

  1087. what we call

  1088. saved.

  1089. Saved from the

  1090. punishment of

  1091. sin.

  1092. Saved from that

  1093. terrible place that

  1094. God prepared for

  1095. Satan and all

  1096. those who

  1097. will die

  1098. without turning

  1099. to Jesus.

  1100. But if you

  1101. give your life

  1102. to Jesus,

  1103. then he will

  1104. save you.

  1105. We heard that

  1106. testimony of

  1107. Megan earlier in

  1108. the service,

  1109. it was powerful,

  1110. man.

  1111. So great to

  1112. hear that.

  1113. So that's when

  1114. it starts.

  1115. But then day

  1116. after day,

  1117. we're changed

  1118. into his image.

  1119. Day after day,

  1120. more and more,

  1121. by God's spirit,

  1122. his holy spirit

  1123. indwelling us,

  1124. going around with

  1125. us everywhere we

  1126. go.

  1127. He teaches us,

  1128. he corrects us,

  1129. we go two steps

  1130. forward and one

  1131. step back and

  1132. then he just

  1133. never gives up on

  1134. us and keeps

  1135. leading us on and

  1136. changing us more

  1137. and more into

  1138. his image.

  1139. So if you

  1140. aren't changed,

  1141. if you've been

  1142. changed less and

  1143. less instead of

  1144. more and more,

  1145. then maybe you

  1146. haven't been open

  1147. to God's holy

  1148. spirit and his

  1149. leading.

  1150. Well, it's time to

  1151. change that.

  1152. It's time to be

  1153. transformed.

  1154. It's time to get

  1155. back on the

  1156. transformation train,

  1157. okay?

  1158. Maybe it took a

  1159. stop and you got

  1160. off the train for

  1161. a little while.

  1162. It's time to get

  1163. back on and let

  1164. God start transforming

  1165. you again.

  1166. I want to share

  1167. this verse with

  1168. you, part of the

  1169. song that the

  1170. choir sang last

  1171. week.

  1172. I choose surrender.

  1173. I choose to

  1174. love.

  1175. Oh God, my

  1176. Savior, you'll

  1177. always be enough.

  1178. I choose forgiveness.

  1179. I choose grace.

  1180. I choose to

  1181. worship no matter

  1182. what I face.

  1183. What is he doing?

  1184. He's choosing

  1185. the Jesus way.

  1186. He's choosing

  1187. transformation.

  1188. He's choosing

  1189. sacrifice.

  1190. He's choosing

  1191. real love.

  1192. It's not a

  1193. feeling.

  1194. It's not an

  1195. environment.

  1196. It's not an

  1197. atmosphere.

  1198. It's not something

  1199. you get just by

  1200. being around it.

  1201. Did you ever

  1202. sleep on top of

  1203. your book at night

  1204. before you had a

  1205. test?

  1206. Because you were

  1207. hoping by osmosis

  1208. it would get in

  1209. there?

  1210. It doesn't work

  1211. with the Jesus way

  1212. either, okay?

  1213. You can't just hang

  1214. around Jesus.

  1215. You can't just hang

  1216. around the church house

  1217. and hang around

  1218. Christians and all

  1219. of a sudden you

  1220. become more like

  1221. Jesus.

  1222. No, it's a choice.

  1223. Now you should hang

  1224. around the church.

  1225. You should hang

  1226. around other people

  1227. like Jesus because

  1228. maybe they'll start

  1229. to convince you to

  1230. be like that too.

1231. But you have to make

  1232. the choice for

  1233. yourself.

  1234. Children, teenagers,

  1235. it's not enough to

1236. grow up in a God

  1237. fearing, Christ

  1238. honoring home.

  1239. You have to choose

  1240. yourself.

  1241. Say, I choose

  1242. surrender.

  1243. I choose love.

  1244. I choose God, my

  1245. Savior.

  1246. He will be enough

  1247. for me.

  1248. I choose forgiveness.

  1249. That's hard.

  1250. Choosing forgiveness.

  1251. I choose to give

  1252. grace like God's

  1253. given me.

  1254. I choose to worship

  1255. no matter what I

  1256. face.

  1257. It's easy to sing

  1258. that.

  1259. It's really hard to

  1260. live that.

  1261. I choose the Jesus

  1262. way.

  1263. So our takeaway

  1264. this morning is

  1265. commit to the Jesus

  1266. way and then

  1267. sit back and watch

  1268. God transform you

  1269. into becoming his

  1270. disciple.

  1271. This morning,

  1272. choose the Jesus

  1273. way before you walk

  1274. out those doors.

  1275. Say, man, I chose

1276. the Jesus way a long

  1277. time ago.

  1278. What are you talking

  1279. about?

  1280. You might need to

  1281. choose it again.

  1282. I don't know about

1283. you, but I need to

  1284. choose it every

  1285. morning.

  1286. Sometimes multiple

  1287. times throughout the

  1288. day, I've got to

  1289. sit back and say,

  1290. you know what?

  1291. I've gotten off the

  1292. track.

  1293. I've gotten off the

  1294. path.

1295. I got off at the

  1296. train stop.

1297. I got to get back

  1298. on.

  1299. I got to choose

  1300. the Jesus way again

  1301. and then watch God

  1302. start transforming me

  1303. again into being his

  1304. disciple.

  1305. Can you imagine what

  1306. that would look like

1307. if our church was full

  1308. of transforming Jesus'

  1309. disciples?

  1310. And we showed each

1311. other the kind of love

  1312. he showed to his

  1313. disciples and his

  1314. friends and those

  1315. outside the lost.

1316. Can you imagine if we

  1317. became his disciples?

1318. Would you pray with me

  1319. now?

1320. God, I pray that we

  1321. would be your disciples,

1322. that we would choose to

1323. follow you, that we would

  1324. be a church, not a church

1325. that names the name of

  1326. Jesus and says, oh,

1327. yeah, man, I'd go to

  1328. First Baptist.

  1329. I'm a Christian.

  1330. I love God.

  1331. God, I love you.

  1332. I love you.

1333. But a church that chooses

  1334. moment by moment

  1335. to rest in your

  1336. forgiveness, to lean into

1337. your grace, a church that

1338. is powerful, not because of

1339. how angry we can get or how

1340. much might we show or how

1341. impressive we are, a church

1342. that is powerful because of

  1343. our forgiveness, because of

1344. our love, because of our

  1345. sacrifice, because God is

  1346. transforming us.

1347. And then we're right where

1348. you want us to be.

1349. We're the kind of church

1350. you want us to be.

1351. Jared's going to lead us in

  1352. a song.

1353. Before he does, let me ask

1354. you a couple of questions.

1355. I'd love for you to keep

1356. your seats as he sings.

1357. Just enter into a time of

  1358. prayer.

  1359. We've got a few minutes

  1360. before we dismiss.

1361. Would you just section off

1362. this time to be a time of

  1363. quiet reflection on your

  1364. heart?

1365. Not talking about what you

  1366. do.

  1367. Maybe there's something that

  1368. God's convicting you about

1369. what you do, and you need to

1370. answer him and listen to the

  1371. Holy Spirit and obey.

1372. But right now I'm really

1373. focusing on those who aren't

  1374. necessarily going out and

1375. doing all the things that we

1376. know bring dishonor to God.

1377. You're not living that kind of

  1378. lifestyle.

1379. But inwardly, you might have

  1380. stopped being transformed

  1381. along the way.

  1382. I'm talking to myself, I'm

1383. talking to my family, and I'm

1384. talking to my church family.

1385. I believe the Holy Spirit

1386. needs some room to work within

  1387. our church.

1388. And I pray that right now we

1389. would open up our hearts and

1390. say, God, transform me once

  1391. again.

  1392. I don't know what it's going to

  1393. take.

  1394. I don't know what it's going to

  1395. look like for you.

1396. It's hard enough to figure out

1397. what it looks like for me.

1398. But I pray that we would make a

1399. commitment to the Jesus way.

1400. And then we watch God transform

  1401. us.

1402. That means every morning, every

1403. night, moment by moment, when we

1404. mess up, we stop and we step back

1405. and say, God, forgive me.

1406. I know you already forgive me.

1407. I know your grace never leaves.

  1408. I know I messed up.

  1409. I know I spoke in anger.

  1410. I know I was selfish.

  1411. I know I was self-centered.

  1412. I know I was greedy.

  1413. I know I was fearful.

1414. Whatever it is, God, I know.

1415. And I just got to get back on the

  1416. Jesus way.

1417. Get back on the transformation

  1418. train.

1419. Let you change me again.

1420. All right, let me ask you these

  1421. questions.

1422. Is there anybody in here, I

  1423. shared the gospel earlier.

1424. And you say, I need to turn from

1425. my sin and turn to Jesus.

1426. Would you slip your hand up now?

1427. I'd love to pray for you.

1428. Anybody in here, I've never been

  1429. saved.

1430. I want to do that today.

  1431. Thank you.

1432. For the rest of us, I'm not going

1433. to ask you to raise your hand.

1434. I'm just going to ask you to listen

1435. to the Holy Spirit right now.

1436. Jared, would you lead us in this

  1437. song?

1438. You can let him sing over you.

1439. You can join in singing.

  1440. It's up to you.

1441. Let's keep our seats and let God

  1442. speak to us.
