  1. All right, how many of you have been blessed by the service already?

  2. Yeah, I have too.

  3. That worship was powerful, and I'm grateful to the choir and our musicians and Jared for

  4. leading us to the throne of God already this morning.

  5. Let's go to the Gospel of Luke chapter 9 and verse 23 if we can.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  6. Is this any better?

  7. It's not working.

  8. It's weird.

  9. Can you all hear me okay?

  10. I'm not sure what's working.

  11. Sorry.

  12. Luke chapter 9 and verse 23.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  13. We're continuing in our series this morning on be a disciple.

  14. Be a disciple.

  15. Last Sunday, we talked about choosing the Jesus way.

  16. Choosing the Jesus way.

  17. Back during Pioneer Union, our choir blessed us on Sunday morning and again at the Power

  18. and Praise event at the Cowboy Church with the song entitled, The Jesus Way.

  19. We talked about that last Sunday morning, choosing the Jesus way.

  20. What does that look like?

  21. Our takeaway was commit to the Jesus way and watch God transform you into becoming his disciple.

  22. So all of our sermons are available on our YouTube channel at FBC Henrietta on YouTube.

  23. So you can get caught up if you'd ever like to do that.

  24. But that is our challenge from last Sunday.

  25. Watch God transform you into becoming his disciple by choosing the Jesus way.

  26. If you wouldn't mind, if you're there in Luke chapter 9 with us, would you mind joining me in standing

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  27. as we read this opening text, Luke chapter 9 and verse 23.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  28. Let's read down through verse 25 together and it's on the screen as well.

  29. Then he said to them all,

  30. God, I pray that you would teach us this life transforming lesson from your words that you spoke to your disciples.

  31. I pray that it would change us from the inside out, that we would give you the glory for it.

  32. In Jesus' name we pray.

  33. Amen.

  34. You may be seated.

  35. Thank you for standing.

  36. The title this morning is Living in Denial.

  37. Living in Denial.

  38. Now, I want to go back to Luke chapter 9 and verse 23 so you know what kind of denial we're talking about.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  39. He said, if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself.

  40. Just so we're clear, Mark Twain said denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

  41. We're not talking about the kind of denial you might be thinking of, okay?

  42. We're not talking about denial river either.

  43. We're talking about denying ourselves.

  44. I want to pivot and go a place that you probably didn't wake up and your mind wandered to this place this morning.

  45. I want to go to the concept of asceticism.

  46. Did anybody start thinking about asceticism when you woke up this morning?

  47. Just me?

  48. Okay.

  49. Only me because I had been studying for this passage.

  50. So that was the only reason.

  51. I want to talk to you about Simeon the Elder.

  52. All right?

  53. Simeon the Elder was a monk from Aleppo, Syria.

  54. He was a stylite.

  55. A stylite is someone who believes that physical suffering is necessary to be right with God.

  56. An ascetic, a stylite is a form of an ascetic.

  57. Someone who ascribes to asceticism.

  58. So an ascetic is someone who is characterized by or suggests the practice of severe self-discipline

  59. and abstaining from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.

  60. So it's someone who takes self-denial to the extreme, usually for the reasons of faith.

  61. This is an early painting of Simeon the Elder.

  62. Simeon the Elder became a monk, like we said, only over in Syria.

  63. He joined a monastery in Aleppo.

  64. And his views and his ideas were so extreme, they kicked him out of his monastery.

  65. How extreme do you have to be to get kicked out of a monastery?

  66. Because they think you're too strict, you're too rigid.

  67. He moved to a tiny little hut.

  68. But people wouldn't leave him alone in his hut.

  69. So he built a nine-foot pillar and a little three-by-three-foot platform on top of the pillar

  70. and refused to come down.

  71. Problem was, people would still come talk to him on top of his nine-foot pillar

  72. and they would seek his wisdom and his advice

  73. because they thought this guy must have found the better way.

  74. We've got to come find out how he's cracked the code to this higher way of life.

  75. See what I said, this higher way of life?

  76. Problem was, he was still too accessible to people for his liking.

  77. So he kept building his pillar higher and higher until it was 50 feet high.

  78. And he stayed on that pillar, true story, for 37 years until he died.

  79. And you don't want to know what physical condition he was in when he died.

  80. This guy took self-denial to another level.

  81. Did anybody get that?

  82. Thank you.

  83. It just wasn't that funny, was it?

  84. I thought it was pretty funny, personally.

  85. He took self-denial to a level 50 feet high, all right?

  86. Sorry for another bad joke.

  87. The most ironic thing is this guy was trying to get closer to God.

  88. He was trying to set himself apart.

  89. In reality, by his own writings and teaching,

  90. he was trying to deny himself.

  91. But the irony in it is that he was living in actual denial.

  92. Because he was denying the actual fact.

  93. He was completely oblivious to the fact that God calls us not to self-absorption,

  94. not to isolation.

  95. He calls us not to lift ourselves up on a pedestal,

  96. not to ignore the world around us,

  97. but to come down from our self-erected high place,

  98. to deny our inner pride and self-righteous attitude,

  99. and to follow Jesus himself as he leads us on mission

  100. among those all around us who need him so desperately.

  101. That's what a disciple is.

  102. It's not Simeon the Elder.

  103. It's not asceticism.

  104. It's not being a stylite.

  105. It's not lifting ourselves up.

  106. That's what denying self actually looks like.

  107. In trying to deny himself,

  108. he actually prioritized himself above everyone else.

  109. So when Jesus calls us to deny ourselves,

  110. we have to be very careful to look at what he actually means.

  111. I found a very accurate,

  112. I believe,

  113. I believe description at what Jesus actually means from the Bible teacher,

  114. Kylie Dunn.

  115. She wrote this,

  116. Jesus does not have broad generic ideas about self-denial.

  117. He has something very specific in mind.

  118. From Luke's writing and elsewhere in scripture,

  119. components of self-denial start to take shape.

  120. Self-denial is not about you,

  121. but it's submission to a very particular person.

  122. Because of that person,

  123. when properly motivated,

  124. self-denial is not asceticism.

  125. That's why I wanted to give you that definition a minute ago.

  126. It's not asceticism.

  127. It's not Simeon the Elder.

  128. It's not being a stylite.

  129. It's not this extreme form of rejecting all indulgences

  130. and lifting yourself up and being a hermit.

  131. It's not any of that.

  132. It's worship.

  133. It's worship of Jesus Christ himself.

  134. That is self-denial.

  135. So let's go back to the word of God.

  136. Colossians chapter 2 and verse 8.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  137. Would you turn with me over to Colossians chapter 2 and verse 8?

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  138. We're going to look at Colossians 2 and verse 8.

  139. Then we're going to skip down to verse 16

  140. and read down through the end of the chapter

  141. and into chapter 3.

  142. Colossians 2 and verse 8.

  143. Be careful that no one takes you captive

  144. through philosophy and empty deceit

  145. based on human tradition,

  146. based on the elements of the world

  147. rather than Christ.

  148. Let's read that again.

  149. Be careful that no one takes you captive

  150. through philosophy,

  151. through empty deceit,

  152. based on human tradition.

  153. Did you catch that?

  154. Based on the elements of the world

  155. rather than Christ.

  156. So what's the lesson here?

  157. Human tradition rarely comes from God.

  158. Simeon's tradition here

  159. became something that became a tradition.

  160. It's still actually practiced today.

  161. In modern day Turkey,

  162. there's a guy on a pillar,

  163. there's a monk on a pillar

  164. who's been up there for,

  165. I want to say 12 years.

  166. You'd have to fact check me on that.

  167. But he's trying to be the modern day Simeon.

  168. He's over there right now.

  169. You can go visit Turkey if you want

  170. and go see him up on his pillar.

  171. It's a tradition still alive today.

  172. He thinks he's closer to God

  173. because he's being a stylite.

  174. That's a tradition that's nowhere commanded in the Bible.

  175. It's not getting him one ounce closer to God.

  176. He's actually disobeying God's commands

  177. rather than obeying something

  178. that God commanded his people to do.

  179. So human tradition rarely gets us closer to God.

  180. Now that's an extreme example,

  181. but let's bring it a little bit closer to home.

  182. Are there things that we have incorporated into our lives

  183. that feel like maybe that's something that came from God,

  184. but when we break them down,

  185. it really never came from God.

  186. And it might actually be leading us

  187. a little bit further from God

  188. than closer to God.

  189. Or it might be distracting us

  190. from what God actually wants for us

  191. rather than helping us accomplish the mission

  192. that God actually has for us.

  193. Let's look at our home lives.

  194. Are there things that have become

  195. so important to us in our home lives,

  196. we can't think of our life without them,

  197. but they're actually keeping us

  198. from the best that God has for us and our families?

  199. How about our church?

  200. Are there things that have become so important

  201. that we're used to seeing in our church,

  202. but it's keeping us from the best?

  203. That God has for our church

  204. and accomplishing the mission that he has for our church.

  205. The questions that we've got to ask,

  206. tradition not only doesn't always come from God,

  207. rarely comes from God,

  208. sometimes it can keep us from the best

  209. that God has for us.

  210. Matthew 15, verses six through nine,

  211. Jesus was, man, really laying it down for him,

  212. and he said, you cancel the word of God

  213. for the sake of your own tradition.

  214. He was calling out the Pharisees.

  215. And he said, you cancel the word of God

  216. for the sake of your own tradition,

  217. you hypocrites.

  218. Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you,

  219. for he wrote,

  220. these people honor me with their lips,

  221. but their hearts are far from me.

  222. Their worship is a farce,

  223. for they teach man-made ideas

  224. as commands from God.

  225. They teach man-made ideas

  226. as commands from God.

  227. Now y'all, I'm all about learning

  228. from the culture around us.

  229. I'm all about,

  230. you know, Jesus used a donkey

  231. and made it talk.

  232. You know, Jesus quoted different people.

  233. Paul quoted different people.

  234. On Mars Hill, Paul quoted philosophers

  235. that had nothing to do with God.

  236. It absolutely stood counter

  237. to what God believed.

  238. But, you cannot quote those man-made ideas

  239. as commands from God.

  240. You can't have a man say something

  241. and then put it in the mouth of Jesus.

  242. You can't come up with an idea

  243. and then force it on people

  244. as though it came from God.

  245. That's what the Pharisees tried to do.

  246. And then enforced those rules on people.

  247. And then legislated their commands

  248. as though they came from God.

  249. That's what Jesus called out.

  250. He said,

  251. you honor me with your lips,

  252. but your hearts are so far from me.

  253. That worship is a farce.

  254. That is not worship.

  255. You're not denying yourself.

  256. You're lifting yourself up

  257. so far above me.

  258. You're not my disciples.

  259. So when he calls you to be a disciple,

  260. he's calling you to deny yourself.

  261. We're starting up a Sunday school class.

  262. Can't really call it a Sunday school class,

  263. I guess,

  264. but it's a class that will meet

  265. for a period of Sundays

  266. during the Sunday school hour,

  267. but it's a discipleship class is what it is.

  268. For new believers,

  269. we've had a lot of baptisms recently.

  270. It's a discipleship class

  271. that'll meet up,

  272. meet during the Sunday school hour

  273. for just a few weeks

  274. called Starting Points.

  275. And it's for some of our new believers

  276. or people who maybe just never got discipled.

  277. Maybe were saved,

  278. maybe were baptized,

  279. maybe recently joined the church

  280. and just never went through

  281. those foundational level steps

  282. toward being a disciple and follower of Jesus.

  283. We're starting that up

  284. in just a couple of weeks.

  285. And that is going to be

  286. one of the key elements of that class

  287. is what Jesus says about being a disciple.

  288. And one of the key elements is denying yourself.

  289. It's saying,

  290. I don't run my life anymore.

  291. Jesus runs my life now.

  292. Because on the outside,

  293. you can follow one of two paths.

  294. This isn't in my notes,

  295. but this is free here, okay?

  296. There's two paths you can follow

  297. to be a Christian or a church person.

  298. You can say,

  299. I'm going to look like I am on the outside

  300. and then I'm just going to live

  301. like everybody else does

  302. the rest of the time.

  303. Or you can say,

  304. I'm going to let Jesus take over my life

  305. and even though I'm going to be imperfect

  306. and I'm going to fail a lot,

  307. God's going to transform me

  308. from the inside out.

  309. So it's going to be from the outside

  310. or it's going to be from the inside.

  311. The majority of people sitting in church

  312. will follow the first path.

  313. They're going to let God change their outside.

  314. They're not going to give Him much access

  315. to the inside.

  316. The choice you have to make

  317. is are you going to be part of that one

  318. or are you going to let God change the inside?

  319. And that's what I'm going to talk about

  320. with the discipleship class.

  321. Are you going to be part of the group

  322. that's going to let God change the inside?

  323. That's what Jesus is challenging us here

  324. in Matthew.

  325. So let's get back to Colossians 2.

  326. Colossians 2.

  327. First, human tradition rarely comes from God.

  328. Second, rules cannot conquer sin.

  329. Rules cannot conquer sin.

  330. Back in Colossians 2.

  331. Let's look down at verse 16.

  332. Verse 16.

  333. Therefore, don't let anyone judge you

  334. in regard to food and drink

  335. or in the matter of a festival

  336. or a new moon or a Sabbath day.

  337. These were all controversies back then.

  338. These are a shadow of what was to come.

  339. The substance is Christ.

  340. See what he's calling you here?

  341. He's not using these words lightly.

  342. He's saying shadow and substance.

  343. This stuff isn't real.

  344. It's not important.

  345. The substance, the real thing, is Jesus.

  346. Let no one condemn you

  347. by delighting in ascetic practices.

  348. There's that word again.

  349. That's why I gave you all the definition

  350. at the beginning

  351. because we were going to be using it, okay?

  352. Okay.

  353. Ascetic practices and the worship of angels

  354. claiming access to a visionary realm.

  355. Such people are inflated by empty notions

  356. of their unspiritual mind.

  357. You ever met anybody who was inflated

  358. by empty notions of their unspiritual mind?

  359. It's really harsh language, isn't it?

  360. Say, man, Christians are just supposed

  361. to be nice all the time.

  362. Well, that's true,

  363. except Jesus was pretty hardcore over there,

  364. and Paul's kind of rude here.

  365. Man, he's calling them

  366. inflated by empty notions

  367. of their unspiritual mind.

  368. He doesn't hold on to the head

  369. from whom the whole body,

  370. nourished and held together

  371. by its ligaments and tendons,

  372. grows with growth from God.

  373. If you're not holding on to the head,

  374. where are you going?

  375. Well, you're not part of the body anymore.

  376. If Jesus is the head

  377. and you become disattached from the head,

  378. you're on your own.

  379. Where are you wandering off to?

  380. The mind, the thinking,

  381. isn't going to control you anymore.

  382. You're off on your own.

  383. If you died with Christ,

  384. verse 20,

  385. to the elements of this world,

  386. why do you live

  387. as if you still belong to the world?

  388. Why do you submit to regulations?

  389. Wow.

  390. Why do you submit yourself

  391. to regulations?

  392. Such as, quote-unquote,

  393. don't handle, don't taste,

  394. don't touch,

  395. verse 22.

  396. All these regulations refer

  397. to what is destined to perish

  398. by being used up.

  399. These are human commands

  400. and doctrines.

  401. These were made for the law.

  402. When the law controlled you,

  403. when you were subject to the law,

  404. when you belonged to Satan,

  405. when you belonged to sin,

  406. this is what controlled you.

  407. Verse 23.

  408. Although these have a reputation

  409. for wisdom,

  410. by promoting,

  411. what do they promote?

  412. Self-made religion.

  413. False humility.

  414. And severe treatment of the body,

  415. otherwise known as asceticism.

  416. They are not of any value

  417. in curbing self-indulgence.

  418. They won't help you

  419. with self-denial.

  420. These laws,

  421. these regulations

  422. will fail every time

  423. because you won't keep them.

  424. Time and time again,

  425. we see in the Bible

  426. people don't keep the laws.

  427. They can't.

  428. And you're no exception.

  429. And the minute you start thinking you do,

  430. like the rich young ruler

  431. who came to Jesus,

  432. I kept the law every day

  433. since I was a kid.

  434. And Jesus quickly shows him,

  435. you missed the whole point of it.

  436. Give up all you have.

  437. Sell it and give the money to the poor.

  438. Well, I can't do that.

  439. Well, you missed the whole point of it.

  440. You're never gonna measure up.

  441. You're never gonna be good enough.

  442. That's the whole point.

  443. The whole point is

  444. God is so much greater than we are.

  445. You're never going to be good enough.

  446. So then quit trying to do

  447. this self-promoting religion.

  448. Quit trying to do this man-made,

  449. I gotta keep the law

  450. and I gotta be good

  451. and I gotta keep all the regulations

  452. and I gotta do it myself.

  453. Fall into the arms of grace.

  454. Thank God that he's a God of love

  455. and compassion

  456. and he's willing to forgive you

  457. and let you start again

  458. every day with him.

  459. And then treat others that way.

  460. And quit holding yourself

  461. and everybody around you

  462. to a standard that you can never meet.

  463. That's what I gotta remind myself of every day.

  464. And that's what I gotta remind you of every Sunday.

  465. So, rules can't conquer sin.

  466. Sin will conquer rules every time.

  467. But Jesus can conquer sin.

  468. And Jesus can conquer the rules.

  469. He conquered the law.

  470. He instituted it

  471. and then he conquered it.

  472. Joel 2 verse 12.

    Joel 2:12

  473. Let's get back here.

  474. Sorry, I jumped ahead.

  475. Romans 8 first.

  476. Romans 8, here we go.

  477. What the law could not do

  478. since it was weakened by the flesh,

  479. God did.

  480. Man, I love that verse.

  481. One of my favorite in Romans 8.

  482. And that's like saying,

  483. which one of your kids do you like the best?

  484. I like them all, right?

  485. But Romans 8 verse 3,

    Romans 8:3

  486. just one of the best

  487. in an amazing chapter.

  488. What the law could not do,

  489. God did.

  490. God did.

  491. God did it.

  492. The rules couldn't do it,

  493. but God did it.

  494. So quit trusting the rules

  495. to make life better for you.

  496. Trust God.

  497. Y'all.

  498. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  499. Back at it now.

  500. We finished chapter 2.

  501. Let's jump into chapter 3.

  502. So if you have been raised with Christ,

  503. seek the things above.

  504. So now we've proven

  505. that the law,

  506. the rules,

  507. the regulations

  508. can't fix it for you.

  509. They can't make your life better.

  510. You have to rely on Jesus.

  511. When problems come,

  512. when your flesh fails you,

  513. when your kids' flesh fail you,

  514. when your wife's flesh fail you,

  515. when your husband's addictions

  516. and problems and lust fail you,

  517. you can't run back to the rules

  518. and say,

  519. why didn't you keep him

  520. on the straight and narrow?

  521. You must run to Jesus.

  522. Now we turn to Colossians 3,

  523. and it says,

  524. so if you have been raised with Christ,

  525. seek the things above,

  526. where Christ is seated

  527. at the right hand of God.

  528. Set your mind on things above,

  529. not on earthly things.

  530. For you died,

  531. and your life is now hidden

  532. with Christ in God.

  533. When Christ,

  534. who is your life,

  535. appears,

  536. then you also will appear

  537. with him in glory.

  538. Therefore,

  539. put to death

  540. what belongs

  541. to your earthly nature,

  542. sexual immorality,

  543. impurity,

  544. lust,

  545. evil desire,

  546. greed,

  547. which is actually idolatry.

  548. all these things

  549. that the law,

  550. the rules,

  551. the regulations

  552. tried to control

  553. and couldn't,

  554. Jesus can help you

  555. put them to death.

  556. Because of these things,

  557. God's wrath is coming

  558. on the disobedient,

  559. those that are still

  560. under the law.

  561. You once walked

  562. in these things

  563. when you were living in them,

  564. but now,

  565. put them away.

  566. put away all the following,

  567. anger,

  568. wrath,

  569. malice,

  570. slander,

  571. filthy language

  572. from your mouth.

  573. Now we're getting

  574. out of that

  575. immoral area

  576. and getting into

  577. the anger area.

  578. How about this one,

  579. verse 9,

  580. do not lie

  581. to one another

  582. since you've put off

  583. the old self

  584. with its practices

  585. and have put on

  586. the new self.

  587. You're being renewed

  588. in knowledge

  589. according to the image

  590. of your creator.

  591. In Christ,

  592. there is not

  593. Jew nor Greek.

  594. There is no more

  595. circumcision and uncircumcision,

  596. barbarian,

  597. Scythian,

  598. slave and free,

  599. all the dividing lines

  600. that separate us

  601. from one another,

  602. but now Christ is all

  603. and in all.

  604. Verse 12,

  605. therefore,

  606. as God's chosen ones,

  607. holy and dearly loved,

  608. here's what you put on.

  609. You put all this stuff on,

  610. but you gotta put,

  611. I'm sorry,

  612. you put all this stuff off,

  613. but you gotta put

  614. something on instead.

  615. Okay?

  616. That's a tale

  617. as old as time.

  618. You don't just stop something,

  619. you start something

  620. in its place.

  621. Alcoholics Anonymous

  622. and whatever other

  623. addiction recovery program

  624. will always tell you

  625. you don't just try

  626. to stop doing something,

  627. you have to start

  628. something in its place

  629. or eventually

  630. you'll go back

  631. to what you were doing

  632. before, right?

  633. So instead,

  634. this is what you put on.

  635. You put on compassion,

  636. kindness,

  637. humility,

  638. gentleness,

  639. and patience,

  640. bearing with one another,

  641. forgiving one another.

  642. Y'all,

  643. some of you,

  644. that is not in your nature.

  645. You're not naturally

  646. the kind of person

  647. who bears with one another.

  648. You're the kind of person

  649. who wants to pick a fight.

  650. That's your old flesh.

  651. Put it off

  652. and let God help you

  653. put on

  654. something new

  655. and different.

  656. God can do that

  657. through you.

  658. You can't.

  659. Your spouse can't

  660. make that change in you.

  661. But God can.

  662. Now if you believe

  663. God can do anything,

  664. then He can make

  665. a change in you.

  666. Trust me,

  667. He's made a change

  668. in me.

  669. And He can make

  670. a change in you.

  671. If anyone has a grievance

  672. against one another,

  673. we forgive one another

  674. just as the Lord

  675. has forgiven us.

  676. So we also

  677. are to forgive.

  678. Verse 14,

  679. Above all,

  680. put on love,

  681. which is the perfect

  682. bond of unity.

  683. And let the peace

  684. of Christ,

  685. to which you are also

  686. called in one body,

  687. rule your hearts

  688. and be thankful.

  689. Let the word of Christ

  690. dwell richly among you

  691. in all wisdom,

  692. teaching and admonishing

  693. one another

  694. through psalms,

  695. hymns,

  696. and spiritual songs,

  697. singing to God

  698. with gratitude

  699. in our hearts.

  700. Man, we had some of that

  701. this morning,

  702. didn't we?

  703. And whatever you do,

  704. in word or deed,

  705. do everything

  706. in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  707. giving thanks to God

  708. the Father

  709. through Him.

  710. Now,

  711. here's the last one.

  712. Godly self-denial

  713. transforms us

  714. from the inside out.

  715. Talked about it last week,

  716. how choosing the Jesus way

  717. will transform us.

  718. Well, that happens

  719. through godly self-denial.

  720. Godly self-denial

  721. is not saying,

  722. well, I'm going to give up

  723. cokes for a year

  724. and I'm going to deny myself that.

  725. Now, maybe,

  726. maybe your doctor

  727. thinks you ought to give up

  728. cokes for a year.

  729. Maybe your waistline

  730. thinks you ought to give up

  731. cokes for a year.

  732. Right?

  733. But God is not

  734. in the scripture

  735. saying,

  736. you have to give up

  737. cokes for a year

  738. or you're not going to be

  739. close to me.

  740. That's not what

  741. godly self-denial

  742. is about.

  743. Godly self-denial

  744. is what we just read

  745. in Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  746. That is how it transforms us

  747. from the inside,

  748. not from the outside.

  749. The inside change

  750. will change the outside.

  751. Us Christians

  752. have got it backwards

  753. so much

  754. that if we change

  755. the outside,

  756. eventually the inside

  757. will catch up.

  758. It doesn't happen.

  759. It's a lie.

  760. It's a lie.

  761. The truth is,

  762. eventually,

  763. the outside

  764. will fail

  765. because the inside

  766. is rotten.

  767. Godly self-denial

  768. must begin

  769. on the inside.

  770. We deny

  771. our flesh

  772. because

  773. Jesus

  774. has shown us

  775. so much love,

  776. we fall in love

  777. with Him.

  778. When you love someone,

  779. you're happy

  780. to give something up

  781. for them.

  782. When you're in love

  783. with someone,

  784. you're happy

  785. to say,

  786. you know what?

  787. I love you so much,

  788. I'll do what you need.

  789. I'll do what's better

  790. for you.

  791. That's where

  792. transformation comes.

  793. Now we're going to go to Joel

  794. and we'll be done.

  795. The Lord says,

  796. turn to me now

  797. while there is time.

  798. Give me your hearts.

  799. Come with fasting,

  800. weeping,

  801. and mourning.

  802. Don't tear your clothing

  803. and your grief,

  804. but tear your hearts

  805. instead.

  806. Y'all,

  807. this is such

  808. a powerful concept here.

  809. Don't miss it.

  810. This is the last thing

  811. we're going to read

  812. before we're done.

  813. Please don't miss this.

  814. Do you see

  815. the last sentence here?

  816. Don't tear your clothing

  817. in your grief.

  818. Tear your hearts

  819. instead.

  820. Talk back to me

  821. for a minute.

  822. What do you think

  823. he means by that?

  824. When they would mourn,

  825. they would tear their clothes.

  826. And it was a regular practice.

  827. It was something

  828. they regularly did.

  829. Why do you think

  830. he's telling them

  831. not to do it?

  832. Superficial.

  833. Don't let this be

  834. like every other time.

  835. Let it be meaningful.

  836. Let it be real change.

  837. Let it be change

  838. on the inside,

  839. not the outside.

  840. Maybe they were

  841. doing it for show.

  842. They would tear their clothes

  843. when somebody would die.

  844. They would have their,

  845. in certain cultures,

  846. you go down to New Orleans,

  847. anybody ever

  848. been down to New Orleans,

  849. Louisiana,

  850. for a funeral?

  851. Seen the wailers

  852. walk through the streets?

  853. If you have a real

  854. New Orleans funeral,

  855. you'll see people

  856. walking down

  857. through the streets

  858. of the French Quarter,

  859. and you have the people

  860. that are wailing.

  861. Like literally,

  862. they'll be,

  863. whoo,

  864. oh,

  865. I mean,

  866. it's a thing.

  867. It is a cultural thing.

  868. And I'm not mocking it

  869. at all.

  870. It is just a part

  871. of their culture.

  872. You're just not used to it

  873. if you see it.

  874. You know,

  875. it's different.

  876. Sometimes you can hire

  877. some wailers

  878. if you don't have people

  879. that are equipped

  880. to do that.

  881. That's a little weird

  882. to me,

  883. but whatever.

  884. But back then,

  885. yeah,

  886. definitely a similar thing.

  887. You know,

  888. they would have

  889. their wailers.

  890. So,

  891. yeah,

  892. I mean,

  893. people are wailing

  894. in their grief

  895. and tearing their clothing,

  896. and it's an outward show.

  897. Maybe sometimes

  898. it was sincere.

  899. Maybe it wasn't.

  900. But the prophet

  901. is saying from the Lord,

  902. don't tear your clothing

  903. in your grief.

  904. Tear your hearts

  905. this time.

  906. Let it be on the inside.

  907. And that's what he says before.

  908. Turn to me now

  909. while there's still time.

  910. Give me your hearts.

  911. Give me your hearts.

  912. That's what Jesus

  913. is always saying to us.

  914. We'll give him our tithes.

  915. We'll give him

  916. our attendance on Sundays sometimes.

  917. We'll give him

  918. our membership.

  919. We'll give him

  920. lots of different things

  921. before we give him

  922. our hearts.

  923. We hold back our hearts.

  924. We guard him

  925. very closely.

  926. And all he really wants

  927. is our hearts.

  928. God bless you.

  929. He wants us.

  930. He wants us.

  931. He wants us.

  932. Because he can do

  933. so much

  934. better

  935. than we're doing.

  936. He can do so much

  937. with our families.

  938. He can do so much good

  939. through us.

  940. You underestimate

  941. the power

  942. that God can do

  943. through you.

  944. the good

  945. that God can accomplish

  946. through you.

  947. You give him

  948. your heart.

  949. So I ask you

  950. would you give God

  951. your heart

  952. today?

  953. The Jesus way

  954. is a way

  955. of transformation

  956. from the inside

  957. out.

  958. Our takeaway

  959. this morning

  960. is to deny yourself

  961. and that starts

  962. on the inside

  963. as God

  964. transforms you

  965. into becoming

  966. his disciple.

  967. Would you pray

  968. with me?

  969. God I pray

  970. that we would be

  971. a people

  972. who give you

  973. our hearts.

  974. That we would

  975. tear our hearts

  976. on the inside.

  977. That you would

  978. convict me.

  979. that you would

  980. convict the men

  981. in this room

  982. to man up,

  983. to step up,

  984. to take the lead.

  985. Say family,

  986. we're going to

  987. follow Jesus.

  988. We're going to

  989. choose the Jesus

  990. way.

  991. over sports,

  992. over work,

  993. over politics,

  994. over money,

  995. over comfort.

  996. We are going

  997. to choose Jesus.

  998. Over tradition,

  999. over reputation,

  1000. whatever idols

  1001. might be standing

  1002. in our way,

  1003. we're going

  1004. to deny

  1005. ourselves.

  1006. We're going

  1007. to choose

  1008. the Jesus

  1009. way.

  1010. God,

  1011. I call on

  1012. the women

  1013. in this room.

  1014. So many

  1015. times,

  1016. you've used

  1017. women to

  1018. stand up

  1019. and take

  1020. the lead.

  1021. And I call

  1022. on women

  1023. to

  1024. be women

  1025. of God

  1026. and if

  1027. that's

  1028. your will,

  1029. let them

  1030. say,

  1031. God,

  1032. make me

  1033. a woman

  1034. of faith

  1035. to be

  1036. a godly

  1037. mother,

  1038. a godly

  1039. wife,

  1040. a godly

  1041. single

  1042. woman who

  1043. would say,

  1044. I will

  1045. choose the

  1046. Jesus way.

  1047. I will

  1048. keep myself

  1049. pure.

  1050. I'll keep

  1051. myself right.

  1052. I'll be

  1053. an example

  1054. of

  1055. what a

  1056. holy woman

  1057. of faith

  1058. would look

  1059. like.

  1060. and I

  1061. will

  1062. choose

  1063. the

  1064. Jesus

  1065. way

  1066. above

  1067. all

  1068. else.

  1069. God,

  1070. I

  1071. give

  1072. you

  1073. my

  1074. heart.

  1075. I

  1076. pray for

  1077. the

  1078. teenagers

  1079. and for

  1080. the

  1081. children

  1082. in this

  1083. room.

  1084. They

  1085. are

  1086. growing

  1087. up

  1088. in an

  1089. age

  1090. when

  1091. the

  1092. outside

  1093. world

  1094. is

  1095. continually

  1096. coming

  1097. after

  1098. them,

  1099. trying

  1100. to get

  1101. their

  1102. attention,

  1103. trying

  1104. to pull

  1105. them

  1106. away

  1107. from

  1108. the

  1109. Jesus

  1110. way,

  1111. from

  1112. being

  1113. God's

  1114. disciple.

  1115. I

  1116. pray that

  1117. they

  1118. would

  1119. listen

  1120. to

  1121. the

  1122. voices

  1123. in

  1124. this

  1125. church,

  1126. in

  1127. godly

  1128. families,

  1129. in

  1130. their

  1131. youth

  1132. group,

  1133. in

  1134. their

  1135. Sunday

  1136. school

  1137. classes,

  1138. in

  1139. their

  1140. lives,

  1141. that

  1142. would

  1143. say,

  1144. don't

  1145. listen

  1146. to

  1147. that.

  1148. You

  1149. choose

  1150. the

  1151. Jesus

  1152. way.

  1153. You

  1154. listen

  1155. to

  1156. the

  1157. Lord

  1158. Jesus

  1159. in

  1160. your

  1161. life.

  1162. That

  1163. they

  1164. would

  1165. come

  1166. to

  1167. faith

  1168. in

  1169. you

  1170. at

  1171. an

  1172. early

  1173. age,

  1174. that

  1175. they

  1176. would

  1177. follow

  1178. you

  1179. in

  1180. baptism,

  1181. that

  1182. they

  1183. would

  1184. publicly

  1185. name

  1186. your

  1187. name

  1188. and

  1189. choose

  1190. to

  1191. be

  1192. your

  1193. disciple.

  1194. That

  1195. we

  1196. would

  1197. rally

  1198. around

  1199. them

  1200. as

  1201. a

  1202. church

  1203. and

  1204. lift

  1205. them

  1206. up

  1207. in

  1208. prayer

  1209. and

  1210. participate

  1211. in

  1212. their

  1213. discipleship

  1214. journey.

  1215. Thank

  1216. you for

  1217. what you're

  1218. doing in

  1219. our

  1220. church.

  1221. We

  1222. ask

  1223. you

  1224. to

  1225. multiply

  1226. it,

  1227. continue

  1228. to

  1229. bless

  1230. it and

  1231. move

  1232. it

  1233. forward.

  1234. Church,

  1235. right

  1236. now,

  1237. with our

  1238. heads

  1239. bowed,

  1240. I ask

  1241. it every

  1242. Sunday,

  1243. I'm

  1244. going to

  1245. ask

  1246. this

  1247. question,

  1248. is there

  1249. anybody

  1250. here

  1251. who

  1252. needs

  1253. to

  1254. give

  1255. your

  1256. life

  1257. to

  1258. Jesus

  1259. for

  1260. the

  1261. first

  1262. time?

  1263. Say,

  1264. I'm

  1265. going to

  1266. turn

  1267. from my

  1268. sin

  1269. and turn

  1270. to

  1271. Jesus.

  1272. I

  1273. believe

  1274. that

  1275. I'm

  1276. a

  1277. sinner

  1278. and

  1279. that

  1280. Jesus

  1281. died

  1282. on

  1283. the

  1284. cross

  1285. for

  1286. me.

  1287. He

  1288. rose

  1289. from

  1290. the

  1291. dead

  1292. and

  1293. I

  1294. want

  1295. to

  1296. ask

  1297. him

  1298. forgive

  1299. me

  1300. of

  1301. my

  1302. sins

  1303. and

  1304. become

  1305. my

  1306. Savior

  1307. today.

  1308. Would

  1309. you

  1310. slip

  1311. your

  1312. hand

  1313. up

  1314. if

  1315. that's

  1316. you?

  1317. Say,

  1318. I'd like

  1319. to do

  1320. that

  1321. today

  1322. before

  1323. I

  1324. leave.

  1325. Thank

  1326. you.

  1327. What

  1328. about

  1329. the

  1330. rest

  1331. of

  1332. you?

  1333. Is

  1334. there

  1335. someone

  1336. who

  1337. says,

  1338. God

  1339. convicted

  1340. me

  1341. about

  1342. something

  1343. this

  1344. morning

  1345. and

  1346. I

  1347. need

  1348. prayer?

  1349. Would

  1350. you

  1351. slip

  1352. your

  1353. hand

  1354. up

  1355. and

  1356. I'll

  1357. pray

  1358. for

  1359. you?

  1360. Anybody?

  1361. I

  1362. need

  1363. prayer.

  1364. Thank

  1365. you.

  1366. Thank

  1367. you.

  1368. Thank

  1369. you.

  1370. Thank

  1371. you.

  1372. Thank

  1373. you.

  1374. Thank

  1375. you.

  1376. God,

  1377. you

  1378. just

  1379. move

  1380. in

  1381. the

  1382. hearts

  1383. this

  1384. morning.

  1385. Church,

  1386. if

  1387. there's

  1388. anybody

  1389. who

  1390. needs

  1391. to

  1392. come

  1393. down

  1394. in

  1395. front

  1396. and

  1397. pray

  1398. with

  1399. me,

  1400. I'm

  1401. here

  1402. and

  1403. available

  1404. for

  1405. that.

  1406. Jared's

  1407. going

  1408. to

  1409. lead

  1410. us

  1411. in

  1412. a

  1413. song.

  1414. If

  1415. you'd

  1416. like

  1417. to

  1418. stand

  1419. and

  1420. sing,

  1421. you're

  1422. welcome

  1423. to.

  1424. If

  1425. you'd

  1426. like

  1427. to

  1428. keep

  1429. your

  1430. seat

  1431. and

  1432. pray,

  1433. that's

  1434. up

  1435. to

  1436. you.

  1437. We're

  1438. just

  1439. going

  1440. to

  1441. have

  1442. a

  1443. couple

  1444. of

  1445. minutes

  1446. where

  1447. God

  1448. has

  1449. the

  1450. liberty

  1451. and

  1452. freedom

  1453. to

  1454. move

  1455. in

  1456. our

  1457. hearts.

  1458. Let's

  1459. enter

  1460. into

  1461. that

  1462. now.
