  1. Thank you, Jared.

  2. Go back with me to Luke, would you?

  3. And let's go to Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  4. Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  5. Jesus said, if you're going to follow me, you've got to take up your cross daily.

  6. Take up your cross daily.

  7. Folks, what that means is you've got to take up your cross daily.

  8. What's that?

  9. You can do that for the 5K?

  10. I don't think so.

  11. My goal is to not knock over this computer right now.

  12. That means it's going to be cumbersome sometimes and inconvenient and it might be painful.

  13. And you're going to wish you could set it down.

  14. Because it would be a whole lot easier to go through your day without it.

  15. Huh?

  16. I know I could set it down.

  17. And yeah, that's what the world says.

  18. Why are you carrying that around?

  19. Why don't you set it down?

  20. It would be a whole lot easier.

  21. So, Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  22. Let's look at it.

  23. Verse 57.

  24. As they were walking along, someone said to Jesus, I will follow you wherever you go.

  25. How many people have said to Jesus, I'll follow you?

  26. How many of us have sung along, I'll follow Jesus.

  27. I'll follow him.

  28. Jesus replied, foxes have dens to live in.

  29. Birds have nests.

  30. But the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.

  31. He said to another person, come, follow me.

  32. And the man agreed.

  33. But then he said, Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.

  34. But Jesus told him, let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.

  35. Your duty is to go and preach about the kingdom of God.

  36. Another said, yes, Lord, I will follow you.

  37. But first let me say goodbye to my family.

  38. But Jesus told him, anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God.

  39. My challenge, folks, is to take a one-way journey.

  40. Take a one-way journey.

  41. This thing is cumbersome, isn't it?

  42. It's annoying.

  43. I'm going to pick it up again later.

  44. I'm going to pick it up again later.

  45. I've done that a lot in my life.

  46. I've picked up my cross and then I've set it back now.

  47. Jesus said three things here.

  48. Do you understand the message he's sending to these people?

  49. Does it sound harsh?

  50. Does it sound cruel?

  51. Are you sure you want to follow Jesus?

  52. You sure he's the one you want to follow?

  53. Or would you rather follow man-made religion?

  54. Would you rather follow traditional church?

  55. Because I'll be honest with you.

  56. Traditional church is nicer.

  57. It's comfortable.

  58. It's nice.

  59. We get to have nice things.

  60. And it's pleasant.

  61. And we get to have a nice social club.

  62. And we get to, you know, have nice beautiful things.

  63. And we get to have a nice long tradition of doing things one way.

  64. And everybody gets to be comfortable.

  65. And we get to have a nice pleasant world that we live in for a long time.

  66. Everybody gets to know everybody.

  67. And everybody gets to be comfortable.

  68. And everybody gets to have a nice us four and no more way of doing things.

  69. And that's comfortable.

  70. And it's pleasant.

  71. And everybody knows what to expect.

  72. But when Jesus comes in and shakes things up, it gets uncomfortable.

  73. And then it's like, now slow down here.

  74. Jesus, what are you doing?

  75. This isn't about you.

  76. This is about what we have going on.

  77. And if we aren't careful, we find ourselves doing that.

  78. We find ourselves, the church of Jesus, telling him it's not about him.

  79. And he says, you're not my followers.

  80. And we talked about that last week.

  81. And instead, his challenge is, pick up your cross.

  82. You haven't picked up your cross in a long time.

  83. You've got to give something up.

  84. You haven't given something up in a long time.

  85. You haven't lain something down in a long time.

  86. You haven't sacrificed anything in a long time.

  87. You haven't put anything to death in a long time.

  88. The Jesus way is a way of death.

  89. You haven't died in a long time.

  90. The Jesus way is a way of death.

  91. You haven't died in a long time.

  92. The Jesus way is a one-way journey to death.

  93. Do you realize what the Emmaus Road was?

  94. They called it the Via Dolorosa.

  95. Do you realize what the journey to the cross was?

  96. It was a journey to death.

  97. It was a one-way journey to the cross.

  98. He wasn't getting out of that.

  99. It was a one-way, no looking back, the cross before me, the world behind me, no turning back.

  100. I'm going to die.

  101. And Jesus said, if you want to follow me, you must go and die.

  102. It was a one-way journey to death.

  103. Turn over five chapters, would you?

  104. Turn over five chapters to Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  105. Take a one-way journey with me.

  106. If you don't, it's okay.

  107. It's okay, guys.

  108. It's okay if you don't want to do it.

  109. Just don't call yourself a disciple yet.

  110. It's okay if you're not there on your journey.

  111. It's okay.

  112. Hey, Jesus is so patient with you.

  113. He's so kind.

  114. He's so patient with you.

  115. You're not there yet on your journey.

  116. Just don't try to say that you're a disciple yet if you're not ready to take a one-way journey to the cross.

  117. Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  118. Luke chapter 14 and verse 25.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  119. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  120. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  121. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  122. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  123. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  124. Jesus said, if you will be my disciple.

  125. After the fact, we get to read about these guys, and he calls them his disciples.

  126. but before then they were disciples in training now we can all be disciples in training right

  127. jesus is teaching them how to be his disciples so if you want to be this if you want to be a

  128. jesus follower this is how it has to look so luke chapter 14 let's skip down to verse 25 verse 25

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  129. a large crowd was following jesus

  130. this is the cost of being a disciple cannot be my disciple are y'all sure that you want to be

  131. jesus followers are you sure you want to be disciples of jesus

  132. if you don't it's okay a lot of people don't there's billions of people in this world

  133. a lot of them don't want to be jesus followers

  134. jesus says otherwise you can't be my disciples if you don't carry your own cross and follow me

  135. you can't be my disciple here we go again

  136. if you don't carry your own cross and follow me you cannot be my disciple verse 28 but don't begin

  137. until you do what count the cost so that's number two count the cost for who would begin construction

  138. of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it

  139. otherwise you might complete only the foundation before running out of money and then everyone

  140. would laugh at you they would say there's the person who started that building and couldn't afford to

  141. finish it or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his

  142. counselors to discuss whether his army of 10 000 could defeat the 20 000 soldiers marching against

  143. him and if he can't he will send a delegation to discuss the terms of peace while the enemy is still

  144. far away so you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own

  145. salt is good for seasoning but if it loses its flavor how do you make it salty again flavorless salt

  146. is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile it is thrown away anyone with ears to hear

  147. should listen and understand have you become flavorless salt have you become the king who goes to war

  148. without enough soldiers to get the job done have you become the building with only the foundation

  149. and not enough to finish the building do you understand what i'm saying

  150. have you become the christian who won't carry his cross

  151. have you become the christian who didn't count the cost

  152. of being the disciple

  153. this is a hard thing to think about

  154. but i think this is why jesus wanted us to stop and remember his sacrifice

  155. so often

  156. we do the lord's supper or communion four times a year

  157. why do you think jesus wanted us to do it so often

  158. so we wouldn't forget his sacrifice right

  159. why do you think he wanted us to remember his sacrifice

  160. because otherwise

  161. we just get caught up in life and we forget the dear cost

  162. of what it took

  163. to forgive us

  164. to buy us back

  165. from the jaws of death

  166. because we get wrapped up

  167. in what our kids are doing

  168. and we get wrapped up

  169. in what our next vacation is

  170. and we get wrapped up in how we're going to pay the next bill

  171. and we get wrapped up in just the cares and everyday life

  172. and we forget

  173. what jesus had to do

  174. and we forget

  175. what it cost

  176. and we forget

  177. the cost

  178. that he asks

  179. us to pay

  180. look if you don't want to pay the cost

  181. i understand

  182. most don't

  183. but i ask you

  184. to consider it

  185. forget what i ask

  186. jesus is asking you

  187. to consider it

  188. consider paying the cost

  189. he's asking you to be his disciple

  190. he's asking you to come following

  191. but he's telling you

  192. count the cost

  193. pick up the cross

  194. and carry it

  195. because it's worth it

  196. it's worth it

  197. but your priorities

  198. have to change

  199. the things that are important to you

  200. right now

  201. have to become less important

  202. and the things that are not as important to you

  203. right now

  204. have to become more important

  205. people getting saved

  206. have to become

  207. most important to you

  208. people getting baptized

  209. and lives being changed

  210. have to become most important to you

  211. what's important to god

  212. has to become most important to you

  213. if that changes

  214. then it all falls into place

  215. it all starts to make sense

  216. if that doesn't change

  217. then it won't ever make sense

  218. it'll all still steam out of order to you

  219. and you'll still be frustrated

  220. and you'll still be irritated

  221. and you'll still be mad

  222. and i won't be able to help you

  223. and nobody else will be able to help you

  224. i promise you

  225. last one

  226. romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  227. you don't have to turn it there

  228. it's one verse

  229. i've got it on the screen for you

  230. if you live according to the flesh

  231. you're going to die

  232. but if you by the spirit

  233. put to death

  234. the deeds of the body

  235. you will live

  236. if you by the spirit

  237. put to death

  238. the deeds of the body

  239. you will live

  240. dietrich bonhoeffer

  241. had to have been referencing

  242. kind of that scripture verse

  243. when he said this quote

  244. when christ calls a man

  245. he bids him

  246. come and die

  247. jesus said

  248. if you follow me

  249. you got to pick up your cross

  250. what happened

  251. when jesus picked up his cross

  252. and walked that road

  253. he was carrying it

  254. to his death

  255. well

  256. he couldn't make it

  257. all the way

  258. could he

  259. somebody else had to come

  260. and carry his cross

  261. for the first time

  262. and now

  263. there was a man called simon

  264. and now

  265. every one of us

  266. is called to pick up

  267. our cross

  268. and carry it

  269. and now we're called

  270. to die

  271. daily

  272. not physically

  273. but spiritually

  274. every one of us

  275. is called

  276. to put ourselves

  277. and our desires

  278. and our flesh

  279. and our priorities

  280. and our motives

  281. and our wants

  282. and our needs

  283. to death

  284. and jesus said

  285. my way is better

  286. trust me

  287. you trusted me

  288. with salvation

  289. you trusted me

  290. to forgive you

  291. you trusted me

  292. to give you

  293. eternal life

  294. now trust me

  295. that my way

  296. is better

  297. and kill off you

  298. and let me

  299. live through you

  300. and if you're not

  301. willing to do that

  302. then you'll never

  303. taste my life

  304. because you'll never

  305. put yourself

  306. to death

  307. so the challenge

  308. is to die

  309. daily

  310. we've said it

  311. every week

  312. the jesus way

  313. is a way

  314. of transformation

  315. it's always

  316. a way

  317. of transformation

  318. but it always

  319. has to start

  320. with death

  321. first

  322. that's the little

  323. secret

  324. that's the

  325. uncomfortable part

  326. that's the hard

  327. part

  328. y'all

  329. carrying this

  330. thing around

  331. i'm glad

  332. it looked

  333. awkward

  334. i'm glad

  335. it looked

  336. uncomfortable

  337. because trust

  338. me

  339. it is

  340. that was

  341. not fun

  342. up here

  343. okay

  344. it was

  345. awkward

  346. and uncomfortable

  347. did it look

  348. awkward and

  349. uncomfortable

  350. it was

  351. and trust me

  352. in real life

  353. it is

  354. in church

  355. life

  356. it is

  357. in family

  358. life

  359. carrying your

  360. cross

  361. cross

  362. is

  363. in all

  364. your

  365. relationships

  366. carrying your

  367. cross

  368. is awkward

  369. difficult

  370. painful

  371. uncomfortable

  372. but it's

  373. worth it

  374. that's why

  375. he asks

  376. you to do

  377. it

  378. so our

  379. takeaway

  380. today

  381. and we're

  382. done

  383. following

  384. jesus

  385. means daily

  386. following him

  387. to the cross

  388. and dying

  389. to myself

  390. you gotta

  391. do it

  392. gotta follow

  393. him to that

  394. cross

  395. gotta pick

  396. it up

  397. follow him

  398. to that

  399. cross

  400. nail

  401. your flesh

  402. to that

  403. cross

  404. nail

  405. your

  406. priorities

  407. to that

  408. cross

  409. nail

  410. your

  411. lies

  412. your

  413. fear

  414. to that

  415. cross

  416. nail

  417. your

  418. worry to that cross. Nail your pain to that cross. Nail your cares to that cross. And

  419. then say, Jesus, replace it. I got nothing to carry now. Now give me your grace. Give

  420. me your hope. Give me your life. Give me your comfort. Give me your peace. Give me your

  421. kindness. Give me your joy. Give me all that you promise. That's what he fills you with.

  422. The fruit of the spirit. Now all the people in your life, brother, man, what happened

  423. to you? I picked up my cross. God did the rest. Let's pray together. God, right now,

  424. you're working on my heart. I pray that you're working on somebody else's too. You ask us

  425. to do difficult things and none more difficult than to pick up our cross and follow you.

  426. Every day you just bring things into our day that seem more than we can take on. But

  427. nothing is too hard for God. You said, is anything too hard for God? We know the answer is no.

  428. God, right? When you were facing your own cross, which is more than we'll ever have to face.

  429. You prayed to your father, let this cup pass from me and

  430. father, if it be your will, let this cup pass from me.

  431. But you knew that you were going to walk that road and you were going to lay down your life for us.

  432. And with everything that

  433. we have to give, we thank you for doing that.

  434. We would have no hope. We'd have no reason

  435. to gather. We'd have no reason to live

  436. without the forgiveness and the new life we have in you

  437. because of your salvation, because of your sacrifice.

  438. So as we remembered your death,

  439. your broken body and blood in the Lord's Supper today,

  440. we remember your sacrifice, we remember your cross,

  441. and we're challenged to take up our own.

  442. God, that means laying down some things.

  443. By your spirit, I pray that you would show us exactly what we need to lay down,

  444. what we need to put to death.

  445. Convict our hearts, God.

  446. If there is a spirit of discord, if there is a spirit of

  447. strife, if there is a

  448. unholy spirit,

  449. quench it, Lord.

  450. I pray that you would unite us together

  451. around your heart

  452. for the lost,

  453. around your mission.

  454. That is what would reign supreme.

  455. Let us be a people

  456. of love for you,

  457. for one another.

  458. Amen.

  459. Amen.

  460. Church, is there someone here in our house

  461. who would like to turn from their sins

  462. and turn to Jesus this morning?

  463. With our heads bowed and eyes closed,

  464. would you lift your hand and say,

  465. I'd like to do that?

  466. Thank you.

  467. With everyone's heads bowed,

  468. I'd just love for you to slip up here

  469. and sit on this front row,

  470. if that's you right now.

  471. If your hand's up,

  472. just come on up and sit on this front row

  473. and I'll come talk to you.

  474. Is there anybody else who would say,

  475. I just need prayer?

  476. Just slip your hand up

  477. and I'll pray for you.

  478. Thank you.

  479. I need prayer for something going on in my heart.

  480. Thank you.

  481. Thank you.

  482. Thank you.

  483. Thank you.

  484. Lord, you know what's going on in their hearts.

  485. I just pray that you would touch them right now.

  486. You'd work in their situation.

  487. You'd work in their life.

  488. God, just move in our church, Lord.

  489. This is your church.

  490. You founded it.

  491. You'll see it through.

  492. You work, God.

  493. It's in your name we pray.

  494. Amen.

  495. Amen.

  496. Amen.

  497. Amen.

  498. Amen.

  499. Amen.

  500. Amen.

  501. Amen.

  502. Amen.
