  1. Let's try it again.

  2. Let's try it again.

  3. How about that?

  4. Does that make a difference?

  5. There we go.

  6. Oh, this is fun.

  7. Normally I do this behind closed doors, but y'all get to see it all.

  8. That's okay.

  9. There's no secrets.

  10. Okay.

  11. Here we go.

  12. Is that better?

  13. All right.

  14. So we're talking about a definition of what it means to be a disciple.

  15. Let's see if this thing is working yet.

  16. Yes.

  17. Hey, we're all there.

  18. Okay.

  19. I like this one.

  20. It was not original to me, but I found it and I found about 45 of them and I really like

  21. this one.

  22. So I wanted to share this with y'all.

  23. A disciple is someone who is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and is committed to

  24. the mission of Jesus.

  25. How about that?

  26. I think that's pretty good.

  27. It's someone who is following Jesus.

  28. It's someone who is following Jesus.

  29. I say it that way because different than was following Jesus, or maybe wants to be following

  30. Jesus, or thinks following Jesus is a good idea.

  31. But an actual disciple is someone who is following Jesus.

  32. Jesus is being changed by Jesus.

  33. Jesus is being changed by Jesus.

  34. Jesus is being changed by Jesus.

  35. And is committed to the mission of Jesus.

  36. Jesus is being changed by Jesus.

  37. Jesus is being changed by Jesus.

  38. So, if we keep that definition of what it is to be a disciple in our minds, then let's

  39. look at our text.

  40. Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  41. Would you mind standing with me as we read it together?

  42. And then you can be seated as we go on a recap of the previous weeks.

  43. Let's read Luke chapter 9 and verse 23 together.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  44. I'm reading from the New Living Translation.

  45. Then he said to them all, if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take

  46. up his cross daily, and follow me.

  47. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it.

  48. But whoever loses his life because of me will save it.

  49. For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world and yet loses or forfeits himself?

  50. Let's take one more look at verse 23.

  51. Then he said to them all, if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take

  52. up his cross daily, and follow me.

  53. Would you be seated?

  54. God, I pray that you would speak to us deeply from this verse.

  55. We've been breaking it down.

  56. We've been diving into it, taking a deep look at this verse, at your definition of what it

  57. looks like to follow you.

  58. I pray that you would let it take strong, deep roots within us.

  59. Change us into a church of Jesus followers.

  60. We'll give you the glory for it.

  61. In Jesus' name we pray.

  62. Amen.

  63. By way of review, three weeks ago, we looked at this first part of the verse that we highlighted

  64. just a moment ago.

  65. If anyone wants to follow after me, and we talked about the Jesus way.

  66. Our choir sang that powerful song, I choose the Jesus way.

  67. Well, that's a wonderful thing to choose.

  68. It's a wonderful thing to say and to sing.

  69. But what does it mean?

  70. Well, we accepted the challenge.

  71. If we commit to the Jesus way, then we can watch God transform us from the inside out

  72. into becoming his disciple.

  73. Then we moved on just a couple of weeks ago into the next part of the verse.

  74. Jesus said, if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself and then take up his

  75. cross daily.

  76. And so what does it mean to live in denial the Jesus way?

  77. And our takeaway that Sunday was denying myself starts on the inside as God transforms me again

  78. from the inside out into becoming his disciple.

  79. Man, our man focus is so often from the outside in, right?

  80. As long as we've got the outside looking good, we're not so much worried about what's going

  81. on on the inside.

  82. But Jesus is completely the opposite.

  83. You start on the inside.

  84. He challenges us that the inside is so often rotten.

  85. And then he will change what's on the outside starting from within.

  86. And then we moved on last Sunday as we observed the Lord's Supper into taking up our cross.

  87. We read the final commandment here to take up his cross daily right before he reminded us

  88. to follow him.

  89. So what does it look like to take up his cross daily?

  90. There was a cost involved, wasn't there?

  91. And so what is the daily cost?

  92. Our takeaway last Sunday, following Jesus means daily following him to the cross.

  93. It was a one-way journey to the cross that would result in death.

  94. There was a daily death to ourselves, to our ambitions, to our goals, to our preferences,

  95. to our desires, and embracing the life of Christ, dying to ourselves and embracing his life.

  96. So we're on to the last part now.

  97. Follow me.

  98. Before we get there, I want to take a little pivot, a little about face, and take you somewhere unexpected.

  99. Does anybody know who these guys are?

  100. I know he does.

  101. Austin, why don't you come up here and tell everybody real loud.

  102. I mean, you've got to use your outside voice.

  103. Why don't you come up here and tell everybody who they are?

  104. Seriously, you've got to use your outside voice.

  105. Tell them who they are.

  106. Dude, perfect.

  107. Everybody hear that?

  108. For the people in the back?

  109. Dude, perfect.

  110. There you go.

  111. All right.

  112. Dude, perfect.

  113. Yep, that's who they are.

  114. Now, I am a fan of dude, perfect.

  115. Do you know why I'm a fan of dude, perfect?

  116. Anybody want to take a guess?

  117. Just take a guess.

  118. They're not perfect.

  119. Trust me, they're not perfect.

  120. Because they're funny.

  121. That's actually not why I'm a fan of dude, perfect.

  122. Christian.

  123. I like that.

  124. Athletes.

  125. Yes.

  126. We're hitting all around it.

  127. Yes, because they're unique.

  128. Disciples.

  129. That's good.

  130. That's good.

  131. Do you think I would care at all about them if my kids, that's it.

  132. Because my kids like them.

  133. That's why.

  134. They were not even on my radar until my kids started watching them.

  135. Well, then, obviously, I'm going to check them out.

  136. You know, what are these guys about?

  137. Well, I found out they are very bold Christians.

  138. I mean, they don't hide their faith at all.

  139. And they produce clean content.

  140. Absolute clean content.

  141. And I really am very grateful for that.

  142. Because it's really hard to find clean content that you can just let your kids watch and not worry about what they're watching.

  143. So, that's why I'm a fan of Dude Perfect.

  144. It's really nice to have that in today's world.

  145. So, I'm a fan.

  146. My kids are more than fans.

  147. They're followers of Dude Perfect.

  148. Right?

  149. I took Austin.

  150. We drove up to Oklahoma City.

  151. And we attended one of their shows.

  152. Because he is a follower of Dude Perfect.

  153. They clicked the follow button on YouTube.

  154. And they, if anything else is going on, they're playing with toys.

  155. Or they're playing in the backyard.

  156. Or they're, you know, doing something else.

  157. And all of a sudden, they hear that there's a new Dude Perfect video on YouTube.

  158. Everything else stops.

  159. And they're going to run over and watch the new Dude Perfect video on YouTube.

  160. Whatever it is.

  161. And it's usually some death-defying stunt or something ridiculous.

  162. But it's entertaining.

  163. Right?

  164. And these guys are some of the most popular people on YouTube.

  165. Which I'm kind of glad about in today's world.

  166. With all the crazy stuff that's out there.

  167. So, I'm a fan of Dude Perfect.

  168. My kids are followers.

  169. There's a difference there.

  170. Right?

  171. Here's the question.

  172. I used that particular example.

  173. We could use anything.

  174. We could go to football.

  175. I don't want to get into football right now.

  176. Because, you know, there's the Texas OU game that happened yesterday.

  177. And, you know, I'm a Texas fan.

  178. And we had a good time.

  179. Anyway, I want to have class in victory.

  180. So, anyway.

  181. Man, when we're talking about football for a minute.

  182. Now, I was raised in Texas.

  183. But I have not met people so devoted to high school football until I came up here.

  184. I mean, I met guys that will travel to the Metroplex to watch teams play that they're not even connected to.

  185. And I'm like, wow.

  186. Those guys are followers of Texas high school football.

  187. That's amazing.

  188. There's a difference between a fan and a follower.

  189. My question for you is, are you a fan of Jesus or are you a follower of Jesus?

  190. Let me take another turn for a moment.

  191. Let's go back to the passage that we read just a moment ago.

  192. Look back at your text for a moment, would you?

  193. Luke chapter 9 and verse 23.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  194. Then he said to them all,

  195. If anyone wants to follow after me,

  196. let him deny himself,

  197. take up his cross daily,

  198. and follow me.

  199. Jesus never asked for fans.

  200. I don't think Jesus wants fans.

  201. I don't think he's interested in fans.

  202. But do you think there's a lot of fans of Jesus in the world today?

  203. Do you think...

  204. Whoa.

  205. Apologies, y'all.

  206. Do you think that the majority of people

  207. who would identify as Christians in the world today

  208. are more fans or followers?

  209. Y'all talk back to me.

  210. I would agree with you.

  211. I think that's absolutely true.

  212. I read a book a long time ago,

  213. many, many years ago now,

  214. that kind of struck a difference between these two things,

  215. fans and followers.

  216. And that stuck with me all these years later.

  217. And every time I read this passage,

  218. Luke 9, 23,

  219. I'm reminded of the difference

  220. in being a fan and being a follower.

  221. In my study for this sermon,

  222. I came across the following paragraph,

  223. and I'd love to share it with you now.

  224. The ancient Jews had a saying

  225. that captures this idea of discipleship and transformation.

  226. Y'all stick with me through this.

  227. This is gonna be really, really cool

  228. and something that I really doubt you've ever heard before.

  229. I know I hadn't heard it before.

  230. The ancient Jews said that if you find a good rabbi,

  231. you know what a rabbi is?

  232. The teacher,

  233. kind of the great pastor leader for the ancient Jews.

  234. If you find a good rabbi,

  235. you should cover yourself in the dust of his feet

  236. and drink in his words thirstily.

  237. The expression probably draws on a well-known site

  238. for ancient Jews.

  239. Disciples were known for walking behind their rabbi,

  240. following him so closely

  241. that they would become covered with the dust

  242. kicked up from his sandals.

  243. This would have been a powerful image

  244. for what should happen

  245. in the disciples' life spiritually.

  246. Disciples were expected to follow the rabbi

  247. so closely

  248. that they would be covered

  249. with their master's whole way

  250. of thinking, living, and acting.

  251. Thousands of years later,

  252. you and I are called to do the same.

  253. Though you and I might travel more often

  254. on paved roads instead of dusty ones,

  255. although out here we have some dusty roads,

  256. don't we?

  257. We are still called to be disciples,

  258. to follow our rabbi,

  259. Jesus Christ,

  260. so closely

  261. that we are covered

  262. by the dust of his life.

  263. This is exactly the kind of disciple

  264. that Jesus is looking for.

  265. He calls us to imitate him.

  266. When I read that paragraph,

  267. that impacted me so powerfully.

  268. And I found this,

  269. and I wanted to share it with you.

  270. This was a first century Jewish blessing.

  271. May you be covered

  272. in the dust of your rabbi.

  273. Y'all,

  274. that is what

  275. I want our church to look like.

  276. Forget what I want.

  277. That is what God

  278. wants our church to look like.

  279. That we would be covered

  280. in the dust

  281. of Jesus' feet.

  282. That we would walk

  283. so closely behind him,

  284. following in his footsteps,

  285. that you and I

  286. would be covered

  287. in the dust

  288. of his feet.

  289. So my question to you is,

  290. how dusty are you?

  291. How dusty are you?

  292. How dusty am I?

  293. How dusty

  294. are we?

  295. Church,

  296. the truth is,

  297. we're all dusty.

  298. We're all covered

  299. in the dust

  300. of whomever

  301. or whatever

  302. we have been following.

  303. We've all been following something.

  304. We've all been following someone.

  305. So whose dust is on you?

  306. Is it the Lord's?

  307. Or something else?

  308. We all have a rabbi.

  309. We all have something

  310. that we follow.

  311. Something that we listen to.

  312. A voice

  313. that we give honor to.

  314. A voice that we heed.

  315. A person that we listen to.

  316. A passion

  317. that we prioritize.

  318. We all have something

  319. that we follow.

  320. Whose dust

  321. is on you.

  322. May you be covered

  323. in the dust

  324. of your rabbi.

  325. So what does it look like

  326. to follow

  327. our rabbi?

  328. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  329. Well, I believe

  330. it looks like

  331. serving him

  332. and going

  333. wherever he goes.

  334. I think that's

  335. what the disciples did.

  336. I think that's

  337. what our Lord

  338. wants us to do.

  339. We serve him

  340. and we follow him

  341. wherever he goes.

  342. Let's look at

  343. John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  344. and verse 27.

  345. My sheep

  346. listen to my voice.

  347. I know them

  348. and they follow me.

  349. Jesus wants us

  350. to follow him

  351. wherever he goes.

  352. He calls us sheep

  353. and we know

  354. that sheep are ignorant.

  355. And I don't think

  356. God wants to demean us

  357. but he wants us

  358. to remember

  359. who we are

  360. and who he is.

  361. That we are

  362. in desperate need

  363. of him.

  364. We are helpless

  365. without him.

  366. And we must lean

  367. on him

  368. and look to him

  369. for help.

  370. And so we follow him

  371. wherever he goes.

  372. And we must listen

  373. to the words

  374. and learn

  375. to depend on them

  376. and crave his teaching.

  377. Because otherwise

  378. we tend to think

  379. that we can get

  380. through this life

  381. just fine

  382. without it.

  383. My sheep

  384. listen to my voice

  385. and they follow me.

  386. And then John 12, 26.

  387. Anyone who wants

  388. to serve me

  389. serve me

  390. must follow me

  391. because my servant

  392. must be

  393. where I am.

  394. Sounds like

  395. we got to get dusty.

  396. We got to stick

  397. pretty close to him.

  398. The father will honor

  399. anyone

  400. who serves me.

  401. We've got to stick

  402. close

  403. to our rabbi.

  404. So

  405. what does it look like

  406. to follow

  407. our rabbi?

  408. Well

  409. it looks like

  410. being an acolyte

  411. instead of a stylite.

  412. We're going way back

  413. to the beginning here

  414. okay?

  415. I got to remind you

  416. what was a stylite?

  417. Well a stylite

  418. way back in week one

  419. three weeks ago

  420. that was an extreme

  421. example of self-denial.

  422. Remember the guy

  423. who would erect

  424. a pillar

  425. and he would sit

  426. on top of it

  427. and he would

  428. shut himself off

  429. from society

  430. and he would stay there

  431. for weeks,

  432. months,

  433. or even years.

  434. Guy sat there

  435. on top of his pillar

  436. for 30 years

  437. and eventually died

  438. because that's what

  439. he thought God

  440. wanted him to do.

  441. That certainly

  442. wasn't what God

  443. wanted him to do.

  444. Well

  445. that of course

  446. is not

  447. what God

  448. calls us to do.

  449. That has no part

  450. of God's mission

  451. on this earth

  452. as according

  453. to scripture

  454. and what's revealed

  455. to us in the word

  456. of God.

  457. So instead

  458. of doing that

  459. how about

  460. being an acolyte?

  461. What is an acolyte?

  462. An acolyte

  463. is one

  464. who attends

  465. or assists

  466. a leader.

  467. I just thought

  468. the comparison

  469. of these two words

  470. was kind of cool.

  471. Okay?

  472. Since we introduced

  473. you to the word

  474. stylite,

  475. well let's compare

  476. it to this.

  477. And why did we

  478. choose this word

  479. acolyte?

  480. Because we get

  481. the word acolyte

  482. from the Greek

  483. word akalutheo.

  484. Why are we

  485. getting into

  486. the Greek word

  487. akalutheo?

  488. Do you know

  489. why?

  490. Because we

  491. just read

  492. Luke 9

  493. 23 a minute

  494. ago and the

  495. final words

  496. of Luke

  497. 9

  498. 23

  499. were

  500. do you remember

  501. two words?

  502. What was it?

  503. Follow me.

  504. Do you know

  505. what that Greek

  506. word is there?

  507. It's one word

  508. follow me.

  509. Akalutheo.

  510. Akalutheo.

  511. From that we

  512. get this word

  513. acolyte which

  514. means one who

  515. attends or

  516. assists a

  517. leader.

  518. It can also

  519. mean to

  520. become a

  521. disciple.

  522. So I challenge

  523. you don't be

  524. a stylite.

  525. Don't be

  526. someone who

  527. shuts yourself

  528. off from

  529. everybody else.

  530. says that's

  531. just who I

  532. am.

  533. Don't be

  534. someone who

  535. puts yourself

  536. up on a

  537. pillar and

  538. raises yourself

  539. up above

  540. everybody else.

  541. Says I'm

  542. too good for

  543. everybody.

  544. Be one who

  545. walks in the

  546. feet of

  547. Jesus.

  548. Be one who

  549. gets covered

  550. in the dust

  551. of Jesus'

  552. feet from

  553. following so

  554. closely.

  555. Be one who

  556. walks so closely

  557. you're there

  558. to serve

  559. Jesus.

  560. You're there

  561. to learn

  562. from his

  563. teaching.

  564. You're there

  565. to hang on

  566. his every

  567. word.

  568. I'm thinking

  569. of the

  570. difference in

  571. Mary and

  572. Martha,

  573. right?

  574. Martha was

  575. just there

  576. to impress

  577. Jesus.

  578. She was there

  579. to make sure

  580. everything was

  581. in order.

  582. Mary was

  583. just there

  584. to hang on

  585. the teaching

  586. of her

  587. rabbi.

  588. she was

  589. there to

  590. sit at

  591. his feet

  592. and soak

  593. up every

  594. word she

  595. could.

  596. She was

  597. his disciple.

  598. So,

  599. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 13 chapter mention

  600. chapter 13

  601. and verse 4,

  602. it is the

  603. Lord your

  604. God you

  605. must follow

  606. and him

  607. you must

  608. revere.

  609. Keep his

  610. commands and

  611. obey him.

  612. Serve him

  613. and hold

  614. fast to

  615. him.

  616. Serve him

  617. and hold

  618. fast to

  619. him.

  620. So,

  621. where is

  622. Jesus

  623. leading?

  624. Before we

  625. get there,

  626. I want to

  627. share this

  628. quote with

  629. you.

  630. The victorious

  631. Christian

  632. neither exalts

  633. nor downgrades

  634. himself.

  635. This was

  636. J.C.

  637. Ryle,

  638. a great

  639. Christian

  640. author.

  641. He says,

  642. the victorious

  643. Christian

  644. neither exalts

  645. nor downgrades

  646. himself.

  647. His interests

  648. have shifted

  649. from self

  650. to Christ.

  651. There's your

  652. difference

  653. between a

  654. stylite and

  655. an acolyte.

  656. There's your

  657. difference between

  658. someone who

  659. exalts

  660. themselves

  661. or someone

  662. who even

  663. beats

  664. themselves

  665. down all

  666. the time.

  667. Someone

  668. whose problem

  669. is seemingly

  670. pride and

  671. self-exaltation

  672. or someone

  673. whose problem

  674. is seemingly

  675. depression

  676. and always

  677. down on

  678. themselves.

  679. Neither

  680. one is what

  681. Christ wants.

  682. what Christ

  683. wants is the

  684. attention not

  685. on you.

  686. What Christ

  687. wants is the

  688. attention on

  689. his will

  690. for you

  691. because he

  692. knows that

  693. that is what

  694. will be best

  695. for you.

  696. That is what

  697. will get you

  698. onto the path

  699. that he designed

  700. for you

  701. and he is

  702. your designer.

  703. He is your

  704. creator.

  705. He is who

  706. knows what

  707. is going to

  708. be best

  709. for you.

  710. So when

  711. your interests

  712. shift from

  713. ourself to

  714. Christ

  715. we've hit

  716. our sweet

  717. spot.

  718. Right?

  719. We've hit

  720. what we were

  721. made to be.

  722. That's why

  723. we can be

  724. then a

  725. victorious

  726. Christian.

  727. So,

  728. secondly,

  729. where is

  730. Jesus leading?

  731. Matthew 4

  732. 19 tells us

  733. where Jesus

  734. is leading.

  735. He says,

  736. follow me

  737. and I will

  738. make you

  739. fishers of

  740. men.

  741. Luke 19

  742. 10 shed

  743. some light

  744. on it.

  745. The son

  746. of man

  747. came to

  748. seek and

  749. to save

  750. the lost.

  751. John 10

  752. 10 says,

  753. Jesus came

  754. that they

  755. may have

  756. life and

  757. have it

  758. abundantly.

  759. Luke 15

  760. 7 says

  761. that there

  762. is more

  763. joy in

  764. heaven over

  765. one lost

  766. sinner who

  767. repents and

  768. returns to

  769. God than

  770. over 99

  771. others who

  772. are righteous

  773. and have it

  774. straight away.

  775. Jesus is

  776. leading us

  777. to the

  778. lost.

  779. Jesus is

  780. leading us

  781. to those

  782. who are

  783. without him.

  784. Fact is,

  785. let me share

  786. this with you.

  787. If you're

  788. following Jesus

  789. and he isn't

  790. leading you

  791. to people

  792. without him,

  793. then it isn't

  794. Jesus you're

  795. following.

  796. Can we look

  797. at that again?

  798. If you think

  799. you're following

  800. Jesus and he

  801. isn't leading

  802. you to people

  803. without him,

  804. then it's not

  805. really Jesus

  806. you're following.

  807. how many

  808. years has

  809. it been

  810. since you

  811. had an

  812. opportunity

  813. to share

  814. Jesus

  815. with somebody

  816. who needed

  817. to hear

  818. about him?

  819. And how

  820. much longer

  821. has it been

  822. since you

  823. took that

  824. opportunity?

  825. I'm not

  826. trying to

  827. shame you,

  828. I'm not

  829. trying to

  830. guilt trip

  831. you.

  832. Jesus

  833. doesn't

  834. do that.

  835. Just

  836. trying to

  837. remind you

  838. of what

  839. our mission

  840. is.

  841. Trying to

  842. remind you

  843. of what

  844. Jesus'

  845. priority

  846. is.

  847. Trying to

  848. remind you

  849. of what

  850. Jesus'

  851. heartbeat

  852. is.

  853. Of why

  854. he's got

  855. us here.

  856. Of where

  857. he's leading

  858. us.

  859. If we

  860. want to

  861. follow

  862. Jesus,

  863. that means

  864. we're

  865. walking

  866. where he's

  867. walking.

  868. What's

  869. his

  870. destination?

  871. His

  872. destination

  873. is to

  874. go to

  875. more people

  876. like you

  877. and me.

  878. because

  879. somebody

  880. came to

  881. us at

  882. some point

  883. and shared

  884. the gospel

  885. with us.

  886. Maybe he

  887. did it to

  888. your parents,

  889. maybe your

  890. grandparents,

  891. maybe an

  892. aunt or

  893. an uncle.

  894. Somebody in

  895. your family

  896. tree was

  897. reached by

  898. the saving

  899. power of

  900. Jesus.

  901. Maybe it

  902. was you.

  903. And because

  904. of that,

  905. you're sitting

  906. where you

  907. are today.

  908. Because of

  909. that,

  910. you got

  911. baptized,

  912. maybe in

  913. those waters.

  914. Because of

  915. that,

  916. maybe life

  917. change

  918. happened.

  919. Maybe you

  920. got set

  921. on a

  922. new road.

  923. Maybe

  924. transformation

  925. happened.

  926. Maybe you

  927. got saved

  928. from certain

  929. death.

  930. And

  931. Mabod wants

  932. to use

  933. you to

  934. do that

  935. for somebody

  936. else.

  937. And that's

  938. why he

  939. called you

  940. to follow

  941. him.

  942. How dusty

  943. are you?

  944. How close

  945. are you

  946. following?

  947. How closely

  948. are you

  949. walking

  950. behind him?

  951. If you're

  952. not walking

  953. closely,

  954. you may

  955. not see

  956. where he's

  957. walking.

  958. You may

  959. not end

  960. up at the

  961. same

  962. location.

  963. You might

  964. miss

  965. where he's

  966. leading you.

  967. And then

  968. that leads

  969. us into

  970. the final

  971. thought.

  972. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  973. chapter 10

  974. and verse

  975. 15.

  976. How beautiful

  977. are the feet

  978. of those

  979. who bring

  980. good news.

  981. how beautiful

  982. are the feet

  983. of those

  984. who bring

  985. good news.

  986. Y'all,

  987. we cannot

  988. go through

  989. a series

  990. on being

  991. a disciple

  992. without

  993. finishing

  994. here.

  995. This is

  996. what Jesus

  997. has called

  998. his disciples

  999. to do,

  1000. is bring

  1001. the good

  1002. news of

  1003. salvation

  1004. to those

  1005. who need

  1006. to hear

  1007. it.

  1008. So,

  1009. we must

  1010. have beautiful,

  1011. dusty feet.

  1012. These are

  1013. the feet

  1014. I'm talking

  1015. about.

  1016. beautiful,

  1017. dusty feet.

  1018. Okay?

  1019. I'm not

  1020. talking about

  1021. going and

  1022. getting a

  1023. pedicure.

  1024. I'm not

  1025. talking about

  1026. putting nice

  1027. socks and

  1028. fancy shoes

  1029. on.

  1030. I'm not

  1031. talking about

  1032. physical feet

  1033. at all.

  1034. I'm talking

  1035. about feet

  1036. shod with

  1037. the preparation

  1038. of the

  1039. gospel of

  1040. peace.

  1041. As we

  1042. talk about

  1043. the armor

  1044. of God

  1045. in Ephesians

  1046. earlier in

  1047. the start

  1048. of this

  1049. year,

  1050. I'm talking

  1051. about feet

  1052. that carry

  1053. the gospel

  1054. of Jesus

  1055. Christ.

  1056. Those are

  1057. the feet

  1058. that Jesus

  1059. says are

  1060. beautiful.

  1061. And if

  1062. you walk

  1063. closely to

  1064. Jesus,

  1065. then your

  1066. feet will

  1067. get dusty

  1068. as he leads

  1069. you to

  1070. people who

  1071. need to

  1072. hear the

  1073. gospel of

  1074. Jesus.

  1075. The saving

  1076. message of

  1077. Jesus Christ

  1078. that a long

  1079. time ago

  1080. on a hill

  1081. far away,

  1082. Jesus

  1083. willingly laid

  1084. down his

  1085. life for

  1086. you and

  1087. for me.

  1088. Because once

  1089. you and I

  1090. were lost

  1091. and we had

  1092. no hope.

  1093. of saving

  1094. ourselves.

  1095. But Jesus

  1096. in his

  1097. kindness

  1098. laid down

  1099. his life

  1100. willingly

  1101. and said,

  1102. I will be

  1103. the sacrifice.

  1104. I will pay

  1105. the penalty

  1106. so that you

  1107. can be saved.

  1108. You can be

  1109. forgiven.

  1110. And as many

  1111. of us

  1112. in this room

  1113. have said,

  1114. Jesus,

  1115. I believe.

  1116. I believe that

  1117. you are the

  1118. Son of God.

  1119. I have faith

  1120. that you

  1121. not only

  1122. love me,

  1123. that you

  1124. are not

  1125. only willing,

  1126. but that you

  1127. are able

  1128. to forgive

  1129. me,

  1130. cleanse me,

  1131. make me

  1132. your child,

  1133. that we

  1134. are now

  1135. saved,

  1136. signed,

  1137. sealed,

  1138. and someday

  1139. will be

  1140. delivered

  1141. to heaven

  1142. to be

  1143. forever

  1144. with our

  1145. Lord.

  1146. God,

  1147. we have

  1148. that,

  1149. but so

  1150. many don't.

  1151. So that's

  1152. why he

  1153. wants us

  1154. to get

  1155. dusty.

  1156. It's not

  1157. all about

  1158. us being

  1159. a disciple.

  1160. It's not

  1161. at all

  1162. about us.

  1163. God

  1164. loves us

  1165. so much.

  1166. He loves

  1167. us so

  1168. dearly.

  1169. He treasures

  1170. us.

  1171. He looks

  1172. forward to

  1173. a joyous

  1174. reunion in

  1175. heaven someday

  1176. when all

  1177. the family,

  1178. all the

  1179. children are

  1180. gathered

  1181. home.

  1182. So why

  1183. would he

  1184. wait?

  1185. Why would

  1186. he delay

  1187. that?

  1188. Why don't

  1189. we just

  1190. all go

  1191. and get

  1192. it started

  1193. now?

  1194. Because not

  1195. all the

  1196. sheep are

  1197. yet in

  1198. the fold.

  1199. So it's

  1200. our job

  1201. to carry

  1202. the good

  1203. news.

  1204. It's our

  1205. job to

  1206. get our

  1207. feet dusty

  1208. and beautiful.

  1209. So

  1210. every week

  1211. we've said

  1212. this,

  1213. the Jesus

  1214. way is

  1215. always a

  1216. way of

  1217. transformation.

  1218. Becoming

  1219. a disciple

  1220. will change

  1221. you.

  1222. I can

  1223. promise you

  1224. that from

  1225. personal

  1226. testimony.

  1227. I know

  1228. many of

  1229. you would

  1230. agree.

  1231. Walking the

  1232. Jesus way

  1233. will change

  1234. you.

  1235. It will

  1236. transform

  1237. you.

  1238. If it

  1239. hasn't,

  1240. or if it

  1241. hasn't in a

  1242. long time,

  1243. then you

  1244. might need

  1245. to look

  1246. back and

  1247. see where

  1248. you strayed

  1249. from the

  1250. Jesus way.

  1251. Because you

  1252. haven't changed

  1253. in a while.

  1254. So here's

  1255. our takeaway.

  1256. How dusty

  1257. am I

  1258. from actually

  1259. following Jesus?

  1260. From listening

  1261. to His

  1262. voice?

  1263. From sharing

  1264. in His

  1265. work?

  1266. Not just

  1267. talking about

  1268. His work.

  1269. Not just

  1270. criticizing His

  1271. work.

  1272. But actually

  1273. sharing in

  1274. His work.

  1275. Actually doing

  1276. His work.

  1277. Somebody came

  1278. to the great

  1279. evangelist D.L.

  1280. Moody so

  1281. many years

  1282. ago.

  1283. Some of

  1284. you maybe

  1285. heard this

  1286. story.

  1287. They said,

  1288. you know,

  1289. I don't like

  1290. how you do

  1291. evangelism.

  1292. I don't like

  1293. how you tell

  1294. other people

  1295. about Jesus.

  1296. And he said,

  1297. you know,

  1298. I don't like

  1299. it either.

  1300. But I like

  1301. my way of

  1302. doing it a

  1303. whole lot

  1304. better than

  1305. I like

  1306. your way

  1307. of not

  1308. doing it.

  1309. And I

  1310. think God's

  1311. probably good

  1312. with that.

  1313. You know,

  1314. we don't have

  1315. to be perfect

  1316. at it.

  1317. We just

  1318. got to stick

  1319. our ugly

  1320. mugs out

  1321. there and

  1322. do it,

  1323. right?

  1324. Would you

  1325. share in

  1326. the work?

  1327. Would you

  1328. do it?

  1329. Would you

  1330. get on

  1331. board?

  1332. Can we

  1333. be disciples

  1334. together?

  1335. Can we

  1336. walk

  1337. closely?

  1338. Can we

  1339. get dusty

  1340. together?

  1341. Can we

  1342. all get

  1343. covered in

  1344. the dust

  1345. of Jesus'

  1346. feet

  1347. together?

  1348. We'll see

  1349. more of that

  1350. happening.

  1351. We'll see

  1352. more of these

  1353. pews filled.

  1354. We'll see

  1355. more decisions

  1356. for Jesus

  1357. happening.

  1358. God promises

  1359. it.

  1360. Let's pray

  1361. together.

  1362. God,

  1363. we just want

  1364. to be your

  1365. disciples.

  1366. disciples.

  1367. We don't

  1368. have it all

  1369. figured out.

  1370. We're going

  1371. to make

  1372. mistakes.

  1373. We're going

  1374. to mess

  1375. up.

  1376. We're not

  1377. going to do

  1378. everything

  1379. right.

  1380. But we

  1381. want to get

  1382. covered in

  1383. your dust.

  1384. We want to

  1385. keep learning

  1386. from you.

  1387. This is a

  1388. lifelong walk.

  1389. This is a

  1390. lifelong journey.

  1391. We want to

  1392. keep growing.

  1393. We want to

  1394. keep changing.

  1395. We want to

  1396. keep transforming.

  1397. We don't

  1398. want to stay

  1399. the same year

  1400. after year

  1401. after year.

  1402. If we do,

  1403. then God,

  1404. just take us

  1405. on home to

  1406. heaven.

  1407. We've ceased

  1408. to be useful

  1409. to you here.

  1410. But instead

  1411. of doing that,

  1412. change us.

  1413. Soften our

  1414. hearts again.

  1415. Some of the

  1416. most encouraging

  1417. things I've

  1418. ever seen

  1419. in my life

  1420. is when

  1421. older saints

  1422. serve,

  1423. beyond what

  1424. you would

  1425. think their

  1426. stage of

  1427. life would

  1428. call for.

  1429. And we

  1430. see that

  1431. happen in

  1432. our church.

  1433. That's so

  1434. encouraging to

  1435. me.

  1436. Sometimes I

  1437. don't know

  1438. where they

  1439. get the

  1440. energy.

  1441. Well, I

  1442. do know

  1443. it comes

  1444. from you.

  1445. It's an

  1446. inspiration to

  1447. me.

  1448. Soldier up

  1449. and just

  1450. keep going.

  1451. They don't

  1452. want to be

  1453. useless to

  1454. you anymore.

  1455. Their

  1456. time's not

  1457. over.

  1458. God, I

  1459. ask that

  1460. every single

  1461. man, woman,

  1462. and child in

  1463. this church

  1464. would get

  1465. covered in

  1466. your dust

  1467. from walking

  1468. so closely

  1469. to you.

  1470. when we

  1471. stray, get

  1472. us back.

  1473. Help us to

  1474. hang on your

  1475. words, listen

  1476. closely to you.

  1477. Challenge each

  1478. other.

  1479. Hey, are you

  1480. still getting

  1481. dusty?

  1482. Convict us,

  1483. God.

  1484. show us

  1485. where we've

  1486. strayed.

  1487. Move

  1488. powerfully in

  1489. our church.

  1490. Make us a

  1491. church of

  1492. disciples of

  1493. Jesus' followers

  1494. and we'll give

  1495. you the glory

  1496. for it.

  1497. In Jesus'

  1498. name, amen.

  1499. Amen.
