  1. Are y'all excited? I'm excited. We're starting a brand new series today on the life of Joseph.

  2. How many of y'all have read the life of Joseph in the Bible before? Many of you. How many of you

  3. have heard the life of Joseph taught in Sunday school or maybe preached in a service before?

  4. You're familiar with it? Yeah, many of you. That is one of my favorite Bible stories. Kind of

  5. growing up, it was always what I said was my favorite Bible story from the Old Testament.

  6. It's also my middle name, so maybe that had something to do with it. But I love Joseph.

  7. It was always my favorite. And so I've never actually preached a sermon series on Joseph

  8. before. This was a first for me. And diving into it, I quickly realized this is an epic saga in the

  9. Old Testament, and there is so much there. And condensing it into a five-sermon series is going

  10. to be very challenging. So here we go. All right. Number one, Joseph, part one. Here we go. Would

  11. you take your Bibles with me and go to Genesis chapter 37? Genesis chapter 37. Week one, our theme

Genesis 37 chapter mention Genesis 37 chapter mention

  12. here is favored but fallen. Favored but fallen. Let me give you a little brief introduction into

  13. the story of Genesis. The story of this part of Genesis of Joseph. All right. The overarching

  14. biblical theme here that I believe we can take away from the life of Joseph is that man meant

  15. this for evil, but God used it for good. Man meant this for evil, but God used it for good.

  16. The theme of Genesis, much of it can be traced to the family of Abraham. Abraham's family leading

  17. up to the story of Joseph would be a good background if we were going to study through the book of

  18. Genesis. And I tried to do as much study through Genesis as I could leading up to chapter 37 here

  19. in preparation for preaching this morning. And my takeaway here is that we live in God's good world

  20. gone bad. And that was the situation in which they found themselves in Genesis 37. They were living in

  21. God's good world gone bad. And through so much sin and failure, God kept giving his people chances.

  22. His chosen people, the Israelites. And of course, nowadays through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ,

  23. we get to be part of God's chosen people. It's no longer just the Hebrew people. Now he has opened

  24. it up to the Gentiles and all of us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now there's

  25. no longer Jew and Gentile. There's no longer Jew and Greek. There's no longer male and female. All are now

  26. one Ephesians teaches us through the blood of Jesus. Thank God for his sacrifice, right?

  27. So now through so much sin and failure, God keeps giving us a chance to, and we thank God for his

  28. continued grace. He extends toward us. We also see this thing, that God's ways are not man's ways.

  29. Isaiah chapter 55 verses eight and nine reminds us that God's ways are higher than ours. God's ways are

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  30. not man's ways. So the overarching biblical theme is that God continues to extend grace in spite of

  31. failure. And while man's evil conspires to throw God's plan off track, somehow through God's divine

  32. sovereign power, his good always wins the day. So let's see how this happens. Let's look at Genesis chapter 37,

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  33. beginning in verse two, before we dive into the text, I'd like you to look at the screen with me. Would you real quick

  34. throughout the life of Joseph, we are going to see different types of Christ. How many of you have heard

  35. the phrase? If you've been in church for a little while, type of Christ, you ever heard that before?

  36. Type of Christ. Don't be afraid. You can raise your hand. It's okay. Yeah, there you go. I got a couple

  37. of you out there. A type of Christ is someone who is not Jesus. The Christ is generally who we would call

  38. Jesus, right? That is Jesus, the Christ child. So Christ is another name for Jesus, God himself.

  39. But a type of Christ is someone who is not God, who we see in scripture, who portrays a character

  40. trait of God, someone who is not God, and we should not confuse them for God, but someone who is a

  41. forerunner, someone who would portray part of the story of who Jesus would become. And so we see part of

  42. who Jesus would become in the life of Joseph. And arguably, Joseph might be our most accurate,

  43. our best type of Christ that we see in the scriptures. You could certainly make an argument

  44. for that as we go through the life of Joseph. When we see the first type of Christ right here

  45. in Genesis 37, the favored son. Anybody know that Jesus was the favored son?

  46. Up in heaven, God's son. He was the favored son. John 3, 16, the only one, only begotten son, right?

  47. Jesus was the favored son. So let's get into the text here. I've got some of it on the screen for

  48. you today. Genesis 37, verse 2. I'm reading from the New Living Translation. This is the account

    Genesis 37:2

  49. of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was 17 years old, he often tended his father's flocks.

  50. He worked for his half-brothers, the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah.

  51. We're going to have all kinds of fun with the names in the Old Testament during this book, okay?

  52. Have you noticed that I've primarily preached from the New Testament since I got here?

  53. There's a reason for that. The names are a whole lot easier, okay? That's not the real reason.

  54. But Joseph, now I did go through Jonah. Did y'all have fun in Jonah? I had so much fun in Jonah.

  55. We're going back to the Old Testament. We're going to go through Joseph. Here we go.

  56. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing. Anybody ever done

  57. that? Anybody ever reported to your dad some of the bad things your brothers were doing?

  58. How did that work out for you with your brothers? Did they appreciate that? Were you very popular with

  59. your brothers after you did that? Did that win you favor with your siblings after you went and told

  60. on them to your dad? No? Can't imagine why. Here we go. Verse 3. Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his

  61. other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So number one, we've got Joseph

  62. telling on his brothers. Number two, we've got the dad loving Joseph more than all the other brothers.

  63. Let's keep reading. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph. What was it?

  64. Coat of many colors. I've got up here a beautiful robe. Your Bible probably has something very similar

  65. staring back at you.

  66. So it should be no surprise to us to read in verse 4,

  67. but his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them.

  68. They couldn't say a kind word to him.

  69. Why do you think that was?

  70. Y'all talk back to me.

  71. Jealousy because Joseph was the?

  72. The favorite.

  73. Yes.

  74. I mean, this isn't too hard to understand, right?

  75. Let's look at this coat.

  76. Now, is this exactly what the coat looks like?

  77. Who knows, right?

  78. But somebody made a pretty good attempt here.

  79. So I was reading John MacArthur.

  80. He's a famous Bible teacher out in California and pastor.

  81. And he did a lot of study on this and a lot of others have done a lot of study on this.

  82. And the best that they've come up with is this coat seemingly could have signified

  83. that this coat was kind of who the family would pass on to.

  84. So the coat should have gone to the oldest son because whoever got the coat got the family,

  85. got the inheritance, all the family wealth, riches, land, everything would go on.

  86. So the coat was more than just a pretty piece of material.

  87. It was very important.

  88. If that was indeed the case, then this was more than just,

  89. oh, he went out and bought me a new pair of Nikes,

  90. or he went out and bought me a new pair of cowboy boots, you know?

  91. This was more than just, dad had a nice coat made for Joseph.

  92. This was a massive, massive blow.

  93. And do you realize where Joseph was in the line of the sons?

  94. He was the youngest.

  95. Now, if you've read ahead in the story, you know there was going to come another one later, right?

  96. But at this moment, he was the youngest of how many?

  97. At the time, it was 11.

  98. At the time, it was 11.

  99. So he was 11th.

  100. So there's 10 angry brothers who are saying,

  101. well, I understand if he's mad at the oldest,

  102. and I understand if he's mad at the second oldest,

  103. but he should have given it to me.

  104. And he's like, forget you, he should have given it to number 4,

  105. or number 5, or number 6.

  106. For sure number 8.

  107. What about number 9 or 10?

  108. But unbelievable, he gave it to number 11?

  109. How in the world can he justify that?

  110. So, we've got a highly dysfunctional family on our hands.

  111. And his brothers hated him for it.

  112. They absolutely hated him for it.

  113. Please don't raise your hands right now.

  114. But how many of you come from a dysfunctional family?

  115. Don't raise your hands right now.

  116. They might be sitting next to you.

  117. Look, we can identify with that to a certain extent.

  118. All of our families have a level of dysfunction

  119. because we are all sinful people.

  120. We all struggle.

  121. Every one of us, none of us come from a perfect family.

  122. We all struggle a little bit.

  123. We all have our fights.

  124. We all have our disagreements.

  125. We're all plagued by sin.

  126. So, we can all relate to a degree

  127. with what Joseph is going through.

  128. What's going on with the favoritism shown here, right?

  129. So, let's take a warning.

  130. Warning number 1.

  131. Promotion can lead to pride.

  132. What are we talking about?

  133. Promotion can lead to pride.

  134. We're about to see it unfold in this story.

  135. The 11th son got the family coat that should have gone to the oldest,

  136. meaning that he would be in charge of the family when Jacob died.

  137. It's a big deal.

  138. And now you've got all these seeds of anger.

  139. And anger can lead to bitterness.

  140. And bitterness can lead to hatred.

  141. And then hatred can lead to all kinds of tragedy.

  142. And if you know the story, you know that that's about to happen.

  143. So, this is the account of Jacob and his family.

  144. And we read on and we see what happened.

  145. But promotion can lead to pride.

  146. Proverbs 16 and verse 18.

  147. Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  148. So, let's see what happens.

  149. Back in Genesis 37 and verse 5.

  150. One night, Joseph had a dream.

  151. And when he told his brothers about it,

  152. they hated him more than ever.

  153. You ever had a dream and told somebody about it?

  154. Have you ever had a dream that you were going to rule over somebody else

  155. and then told them about it?

  156. Was that just Joseph?

  157. I can't say I've ever had that kind of dream ever.

  158. Verse 6.

  159. Listen to this dream.

  160. He said, we were out in the field tying up bundles of grain.

  161. Suddenly, my bundle stood up.

  162. And your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine.

  163. Now, y'all look.

  164. I could be reading this wrong.

  165. And I'm not going to say that every theologian who has studied this passage

  166. agrees that Joseph was giving in to the sin of pride here.

  167. They seem to be split on this.

  168. So, I'm just going to give it to you how I read it.

  169. And I'm going to say some of them agree with me

  170. and some of them say, no, Joseph wasn't being prideful here.

  171. Whether or not Joseph was being prideful here,

  172. we should probably take a warning from this, okay?

  173. His brothers responded,

  174. so you think you will be our king?

  175. Do you?

  176. Do you actually think you will reign over us?

  177. And they hated him all the more

  178. because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.

  179. And then what was actually included in the ancient Hebrew

  180. and then removed later were the words, no duh.

  181. Now, I'll catch up with you in just a second.

  182. Yeah.

  183. You think?

  184. Yeah, they're already mad at him.

  185. They're already hating him.

  186. And then he goes and tells them,

  187. I had a dream, guys.

  188. And the dream is that I'm going to rule over you someday.

  189. You think that was going to work out well for him?

  190. No, it didn't.

  191. And so then, verse 9,

  192. and soon Joseph had another dream.

  193. And again, again,

  194. no one was there to tell him,

  195. read the room, Joseph.

  196. Don't keep telling these guys about these dreams.

  197. Again, he told his brothers about it.

  198. Listen, I've had another dream.

  199. The sun, moon, and 11 stars bowed low before me.

  200. This time, he told the dream to his father

  201. as well as to his brothers.

  202. But his father scolded him.

  203. Remember, he was his father's favorite son.

  204. And even his father got a little upset at this one.

  205. He said, what kind of dream is that?

  206. He asked, will your mother and I

  207. and your brothers actually come

  208. and bow down to the ground before you?

  209. But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph,

  210. his father wondered what the dreams meant.

  211. Now, let me ask y'all,

  212. where do you think those dreams came from?

  213. God, right?

  214. Because did those dreams come to pass?

  215. Yes, they actually did.

  216. We know the end of the story

  217. if you've read ahead.

  218. And you know they actually did.

  219. Do we know that God told Joseph

  220. to go share those with his family?

  221. We don't know that.

  222. We don't know that he didn't.

  223. So we can't say with authority,

  224. Joseph, you were wrong in doing this.

  225. But we can take a warning

  226. to say that there could have been pride involved.

  227. I don't know.

  228. But I do know

  229. that it is certainly not wise

  230. for us to always tell all

  231. that even God tells us.

  232. Sometimes it's wise

  233. to hide it in our heart,

  234. ponder it in our heart,

  235. and wait for God

  236. to promote us,

  237. not try to promote ourselves.

  238. A haughty spirit

  239. will come before a fall.

  240. Did Joseph approach his brothers

  241. in a haughty spirit?

  242. I don't know.

  243. I wasn't there.

  244. But we can certainly

  245. take a warning from that

  246. and be careful

  247. in how we approach others.

  248. We do know

  249. that they were angry at him.

  250. We do know

  251. that they hated him.

  252. And that his interpretation

  253. of those dreams

  254. that God gave to him

  255. certainly did not help him

  256. win any favor

  257. with his brothers

  258. at that time.

  259. Now God is sovereign over all.

  260. God would protect him.

  261. And we know

  262. what happened up ahead.

  263. But the warning could be

  264. silence is often wisest.

  265. Silence is often wisest.

  266. There will be a time

  267. when God wants you

  268. to speak up.

  269. There will be a time

  270. when God wants you

  271. to say what is right,

  272. to say what is true,

  273. to speak the gospel,

  274. to speak the truth.

  275. But how are we

  276. to speak the truth?

  277. Speak the truth

  278. in love.

  279. Speak the truth

  280. in love.

  281. Did Joseph speak lovingly?

  282. I don't know.

  283. But certainly

  284. the Bible teaches us

  285. that a soft answer

  286. can turn away wrath.

  287. And wrath is how

  288. his brothers responded

  289. that day.

  290. So we must take a warning

  291. that silence

  292. can often be wisest.

  293. And then we can move on

  294. to our reminder

  295. that God knows

  296. his plan for you.

  297. So we're not just

  298. taking a negative lesson

  299. from these dreams.

  300. We can also

  301. take a positive

  302. that God knows

  303. his plan for us.

  304. Now God

  305. cryptically revealed

  306. his plan to Joseph.

  307. There's no way

  308. to believe that Joseph

  309. knew how this

  310. was going to unfold.

  311. He didn't get those dreams

  312. and then go share them

  313. with his family

  314. and predict that someday

  315. he knew how all this

  316. was going to play out.

  317. There's no way.

  318. And there's no way

  319. that you could possibly know

  320. what God's plan is for you

  321. and how it's going to play out

  322. with God's design.

  323. But you can rest

  324. that God knows

  325. his plan for you.

  326. And he's in control of it.

  327. And if you walk

  328. closely with him

  329. he'll make sure

  330. that you get

  331. where he wants you to go.

  332. And you reach

  333. that desired outcome

  334. that he has

  335. for you.

  336. So God knows

  337. his plan for you.

  338. We read that

  339. in Jeremiah 29.

  340. I love that.

  341. And I believe

  342. that even though

  343. this was written

  344. in the Old Testament

  345. to his people

  346. that we are now

  347. his people

  348. and we can claim

  349. these promises

  350. as he says

  351. I know the plans

  352. I have for you

  353. declares the Lord.

  354. Plans to prosper you

  355. and not to harm you.

  356. Plans to give you hope

  357. and a future.

  358. And so I believe

  359. that's what my God

  360. says to me

  361. and says to this church.

  362. That he knows

  363. the plans he has for us.

  364. He knows the plans

  365. he has for us individually.

  366. And God knows

  367. the plans he has

  368. for First Baptist Henrietta.

  369. Plans to prosper us

  370. and not to harm us.

  371. Plans to give us hope

  372. and a future.

  373. Man it's great

  374. to look back

  375. on the past.

  376. We've got a former

  377. pastor here today

  378. who served faithfully

  379. in this place

  380. for 15 years today.

  381. And we can look back

  382. and celebrate

  383. what he did

  384. for those 15 years.

  385. We can look back

  386. at Ron Gunner.

  387. We can look back

  388. at Ted Traylor.

  389. We can look back

  390. at the wonderful legacy

  391. that God has done.

  392. And then we can turn around

  393. and look forward

  394. and say we believe also

  395. that not only

  396. has God been faithful

  397. but God will continue

  398. to be faithful

  399. and give us a hope

  400. and a future.

  401. Because he promised it.

  402. He'll do it for me.

  403. He'll do it for my family.

  404. He'll do it

  405. for our church.

  406. If we

  407. walk closely

  408. with him.

  409. If we're faithful to him.

  410. Sometimes even when

  411. we aren't faithful to him.

  412. He's far more faithful to us.

  413. What a wonderful God

  414. we serve.

  415. So,

  416. God knows

  417. his plan

  418. for us.

  419. And then we move on

  420. to the second type

  421. of Christ.

  422. So,

  423. we've got this

  424. favored son

  425. and then he's betrayed

  426. by his own people.

  427. Let's go back

  428. to Genesis 2.

  429. Down in verse 12.

  430. Soon after this

  431. the brothers

  432. went to pasture

  433. their father's

  434. flocks

  435. at Shechem.

  436. They've been gone

  437. for some time.

  438. Jacob says to Joseph,

  439. your brothers are pasturing

  440. their sheep at Shechem.

  441. Get ready

  442. and I'll send you to them.

  443. I'm ready to go.

  444. Joseph replied.

  445. Anybody else remember

  446. another time

  447. this happened

  448. in scripture?

  449. Jesse sent David

  450. to go find his brothers.

  451. Remember that happened?

  452. That interesting parallel there.

  453. And in verse 14,

  454. Jacob says then

  455. to Joseph,

  456. go and see how your brothers

  457. and the flocks

  458. are getting along.

  459. Then come back

  460. and bring me a report.

  461. So,

  462. Jacob sent him on his way.

  463. Joseph travels to Shechem

  464. from their home

  465. in the valley of Hebron.

  466. When he arrives there,

  467. a man from the area

  468. notices him wandering

  469. around the countryside.

  470. What are you looking for?

  471. He says.

  472. And Joseph says,

  473. I'm looking for my brothers.

  474. Do you know where they are?

  475. You know where they're

  476. pasturing their sheep?

  477. And he says,

  478. yes,

  479. they've moved on from here.

  480. But I heard him say,

  481. let's go on to Dothan.

  482. So Joseph followed

  483. his brothers to Dothan

  484. and found them there.

  485. But they saw him coming.

  486. Verse 18.

  487. When Joseph's brothers

  488. saw him coming,

  489. they recognized him

  490. in the distance.

  491. And as he approached,

  492. they made plans

  493. to kill him.

  494. That escalated quickly.

  495. We go from,

  496. wow,

  497. they're jealous.

  498. They're mad about the coat.

  499. They're mad that he's

  500. the favorite.

  501. They're mad about the dreams.

  502. And now they want

  503. to kill the kid.

  504. Wow.

  505. Verse 19.

  506. Here comes the dreamer,

  507. they said.

  508. So now we learn

  509. Joseph's nickname

  510. among the brothers.

  511. Here comes the dreamer.

  512. Come on.

  513. Let's kill him

  514. and throw him

  515. in one of these cisterns.

  516. We can tell our father

  517. a wild animal

  518. has eaten him.

  519. Then we'll see

  520. what becomes

  521. of his dreams.

  522. Y'all,

  523. this path

  524. of anger

  525. and bitterness

  526. and hatred

  527. will lead you places

  528. that you never thought

  529. you would go.

  530. Don't let anger

  531. fester

  532. in your heart.

  533. So,

  534. verse 21.

  535. Thankfully,

  536. somebody

  537. wasn't quite there.

  538. Reuben.

  539. One of the brothers,

  540. Reuben.

  541. When Reuben heard

  542. of their scheme,

  543. apparently he wasn't

  544. within earshot.

  545. So when he heard

  546. of the scheme,

  547. he came to Joseph's rescue.

  548. And he said,

  549. let's not kill him,

  550. guys.

  551. Maybe we don't want

  552. to go quite full murder

  553. at this moment.

  554. Goodness gracious.

  555. Why would we

  556. shed any blood?

  557. Let's just throw him

  558. into this empty cistern.

  559. And you can almost

  560. see Reuben's mind

  561. panicking.

  562. Like,

  563. can I come up

  564. with a scheme

  565. that's going to

  566. satisfy their blood lust

  567. and maybe save

  568. Joseph's life

  569. in the process?

  570. Like,

  571. I don't like the kid.

  572. He drives me nuts.

  573. Can't stand him.

  574. But I'm not ready

  575. to kill him,

  576. for goodness sakes.

  577. So,

  578. let's just throw him

  579. in this empty well

  580. out here in the wilderness.

  581. Then he'll die

  582. without our laying

  583. a hand on him.

  584. And Reuben was

  585. secretly planning

  586. to rescue Joseph

  587. and return him

  588. to his father.

  589. So,

  590. we've got one

  591. brother,

  592. Hussein,

  593. in this moment.

  594. Verse 23.

  595. So,

  596. when Joseph arrived,

  597. his brother

  598. ripped off

  599. the beautiful robe

  600. he was wearing.

  601. Then they grabbed him,

  602. threw him

  603. into the cistern.

  604. The cistern was empty,

  605. no water in it.

  606. Then just as they

  607. were sitting down

  608. to eat,

  609. they looked up

  610. and saw a caravan

  611. of camels,

  612. not caramels.

  613. Very different.

  614. Coming toward them,

  615. it was a group

  616. of Ishmaelite traders

  617. taking a load

  618. of gum,

  619. balm,

  620. aromatic resin

  621. from Gilead

  622. down to Egypt.

  623. Sometime later,

  624. the scene changes.

  625. Reuben returned.

  626. Where are we at?

  627. Sorry, guys.

  628. Just lost my place.

  629. Thank you.

  630. Here we go.

  631. Yep,

  632. there we go.

  633. Judah said to his brothers,

  634. here we go.

  635. Judah said to his brothers,

  636. what will we gain

  637. by killing our brother?

  638. We'd have to cover up

  639. the crime.

  640. So,

  641. we don't know exactly

  642. where Judah's heart

  643. is here.

  644. But,

  645. if you study

  646. a little bit

  647. further on,

  648. you see that

  649. there were kind of

  650. two brothers here,

  651. Reuben and Judah,

  652. who seemed to rise

  653. above the others

  654. as far as who

  655. God would

  656. use.

  657. One,

  658. Reuben saved

  659. Joseph's life.

  660. And then,

  661. two,

  662. anybody know anything

  663. about Judah?

  664. Judah?

  665. What was it?

  666. The line of Judah?

  667. Jesus came from it.

  668. Jesus was the lion

  669. of the tribe

  670. of Judah.

  671. Isn't that interesting?

  672. Jesus didn't come

  673. from the line

  674. of Joseph.

  675. Jesus came

  676. from the line

  677. of Judah.

  678. So,

  679. it's interesting

  680. that once again

  681. somebody else

  682. steps in here

  683. to save

  684. Joseph's life

  685. and it was

  686. Judah.

  687. So,

  688. he says,

  689. Judah says to his

  690. brothers,

  691. what will we gain

  692. by killing our

  693. brothers?

  694. We'd have to

  695. cover up the crime.

  696. Instead of hurting

  697. him,

  698. let's sell him

  699. to those

  700. Ishmaelite traitors.

  701. After all,

  702. he's our brother,

  703. our own flesh and

  704. blood and his

  705. brothers agreed.

  706. So,

  707. when the Ishmaelites

  708. who were Midianite

  709. traitors,

  710. back then that

  711. would have been

  712. a big deal

  713. in our world

  714. today.

  715. It's like,

  716. who are these

  717. people?

  718. Why do they

  719. matter?

  720. But,

  721. you know,

  722. it made sense.

  723. They would have

  724. made a tidy profit

  725. by selling him

  726. to these guys.

  727. They came by

  728. and Joseph's

  729. brothers pulled

  730. him out of the

  731. well and sold

  732. him to them

  733. for 20 pieces

  734. of silver

  735. and the traitors

  736. took him

  737. to Egypt.

  738. Sometime

  739. later,

  740. Reuben

  741. comes back

  742. to get

  743. Joseph

  744. out of the

  745. well

  746. and return

  747. him to his

  748. father.

  749. But Joseph

  750. isn't there,

  751. is he?

  752. He discovered

  753. that Joseph

  754. was missing

  755. and so he

  756. tore his

  757. clothes in

  758. grief and

  759. he went

  760. back to

  761. his brothers

  762. and lamented,

  763. the boy

  764. is gone,

  765. what will

  766. I do

  767. now?

  768. So the

  769. brothers

  770. killed a

  771. young goat

  772. and dipped

  773. Joseph's robe,

  774. that beautiful

  775. robe,

  776. the family

  777. coat that was

  778. going to be

  779. passed on

  780. and they

  781. dipped it

  782. in the goat's

  783. blood and

  784. they sent

  785. the beautiful

  786. robe to their

  787. father with

  788. this message.

  789. Look at

  790. what we

  791. found.

  792. Doesn't

  793. this robe

  794. belong to

  795. your son?

  796. Just a

  797. little side

  798. note here.

  799. Do you

  800. notice how

  801. they sent

  802. it on to

  803. their father

  804. with a

  805. message?

  806. They didn't

  807. even have the

  808. courage to

  809. face him

  810. themselves.

  811. Hey

  812. dad,

  813. Joseph

  814. got eaten

  815. by a wild

  816. animal.

  817. They like

  818. sent the

  819. message on.

  820. Guys had

  821. all kinds

  822. of courage

  823. there,

  824. didn't

  825. they?

  826. So,

  827. what

  828. happened?

  829. The father

  830. recognized it

  831. immediately,

  832. of course.

  833. Yes,

  834. it's my

  835. son's robe.

  836. A wild

  837. animal must

  838. have eaten

  839. him.

  840. Joseph

  841. has clearly

  842. been torn

  843. to pieces

  844. and Jacob

  845. tore his

  846. clothes,

  847. dressed himself

  848. in burlap

  849. and he

  850. mourned

  851. deeply for

  852. his son

  853. for a long

  854. time.

  855. His family

  856. all tried

  857. to comfort

  858. him,

  859. but he

  860. refused

  861. to be

  862. comforted.

  863. I will

  864. go to my

  865. grave,

  866. mourning for

  867. my son,

  868. he would

  869. say,

  870. and then

  871. he would

  872. weep.

  873. So,

  874. there's a

  875. warning here.

  876. Envy

  877. can start

  878. a spiral

  879. of evil.

  880. Envy

  881. can start

  882. a spiral

  883. of evil.

  884. James,

  885. the book

  886. of James,

    James 3 chapter mention

  887. chapter 3

  888. and verse

  889. 13.

  890. Let's go

  891. to verse

  892. 14.

  893. Would you

  894. turn over

  895. there with

  896. me quickly?

  897. We'll be

  898. done in

  899. just a

  900. moment.

  901. James,

    James 3 chapter mention

  902. chapter 3

  903. and verse

  904. 14.

  905. If you have

  906. bitter envy

  907. and selfish

  908. ambition in

  909. your heart,

  910. don't boast

  911. and deny

  912. the truth.

  913. Bitter

  914. envy

  915. and selfish

  916. ambition

  917. in your

  918. heart.

  919. Look over

  920. one more

  921. chapter at

  922. chapter 4.

  923. James,

    James 4:2

  924. chapter 4,

  925. verse 2.

  926. Back up to

  927. verse 1.

  928. Kind of the

  929. first three

  930. verses there.

  931. James 4,

    James 4:1

  932. verses 1,

  933. 2,

  934. and 3.

  935. What is the

  936. source of wars

  937. and fights

  938. among you?

  939. Don't they

  940. come from

  941. your passions

  942. that wage

  943. war within

  944. you?

  945. You desire

  946. and do

  947. not have.

  948. You murder

  949. and covet

  950. and cannot

  951. obtain.

  952. You fight

  953. and wage

  954. war.

  955. You do

  956. not have

  957. because you

  958. do not

  959. ask.

  960. You ask

  961. and don't

  962. receive

  963. because you

  964. ask with

  965. wrong motives

  966. so that you

  967. may spend

  968. it on your

  969. pleasures.

  970. We see

  971. what happens.

  972. We see

  973. the warning

  974. here in the

  975. book of James

  976. and we

  977. see it

  978. portrayed

  979. way back

  980. here in

  981. Genesis

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  982. chapter 37.

  983. Y'all,

  984. envy,

  985. greed,

  986. jealousy,

  987. these are

  988. not to be

  989. taken lightly.

  990. These are

  991. sins that

  992. can take

  993. root in

  994. your life

  995. and spiral

  996. out of

  997. control.

  998. They can

  999. actually start

  1000. to take

  1001. control of

  1002. you and

  1003. start to

  1004. affect your

  1005. mind,

  1006. your brain,

  1007. and make

  1008. you make

  1009. decisions

  1010. that you

  1011. would never

  1012. otherwise

  1013. make.

  1014. They can

  1015. start to

  1016. make you

  1017. an angry

  1018. person.

  1019. They can

  1020. start to

  1021. make you

  1022. view people

  1023. a different

  1024. way.

  1025. People that

  1026. you used

  1027. to love,

  1028. people that

  1029. you used

  1030. to care

  1031. about,

  1032. you can

  1033. start to

  1034. see them

  1035. through a

  1036. different

  1037. lens.

  1038. You can

  1039. start to

  1040. tear families

  1041. apart,

  1042. start to

  1043. ruin

  1044. relationships,

  1045. and then

  1046. anger,

  1047. bitterness,

  1048. can take

  1049. over your

  1050. life,

  1051. and end

  1052. up with

  1053. you choosing

  1054. between killing

  1055. your brother

  1056. or selling

  1057. him off.

  1058. What a

  1059. wild conclusion

  1060. to this story

  1061. today.

  1062. Now is it the

  1063. end of the

  1064. story?

  1065. Oh no.

  1066. Thanks to our

  1067. sovereign God,

  1068. it's not the

  1069. end of the

  1070. story.

  1071. But that's

  1072. where we're

  1073. going to pause

  1074. today.

  1075. I want to

  1076. leave you

  1077. with this

  1078. quote.

  1079. Margaret

  1080. Thatcher,

  1081. the great

  1082. prime minister

  1083. of England,

  1084. the spirit

  1085. of envy

  1086. can destroy,

  1087. it can

  1088. never,

  1089. ever build.

  1090. The spirit

  1091. of envy

  1092. can destroy,

  1093. but it

  1094. can never

  1095. build.

  1096. Romans 12,

  1097. 24,

  1098. maybe puts

  1099. it,

  1100. well definitely

  1101. puts it

  1102. better than

  1103. that.

  1104. Do not

  1105. be overcome

  1106. with evil,

  1107. but overcome

  1108. evil with

  1109. good.

  1110. There is a

  1111. power greater

  1112. than envy.

  1113. There is a

  1114. power greater

  1115. than anger.

  1116. There is a

  1117. power greater

  1118. than jealousy

  1119. and greed

  1120. and bitterness

  1121. and all this

  1122. that could

  1123. drive these

  1124. brothers to

  1125. commit these

  1126. terrible crimes.

  1127. There's a

  1128. power greater

  1129. than all that.

  1130. And that is

  1131. the good that

  1132. comes from our

  1133. God.

  1134. It is our

  1135. good God

  1136. himself.

  1137. He can

  1138. triumph over

  1139. all that.

  1140. He can win

  1141. the day.

  1142. He can

  1143. restore

  1144. those families.

  1145. He can

  1146. mend those

  1147. broken

  1148. relationships.

  1149. So don't

  1150. be overcome

  1151. with the

  1152. evil,

  1153. but overcome

  1154. the evil

  1155. with good.

  1156. So what's

  1157. our takeaway

  1158. today?

  1159. Our takeaway

  1160. is this,

  1161. pride and

  1162. envy are

  1163. warning signs

  1164. in this

  1165. story,

  1166. but the

  1167. start of

  1168. Joseph's

  1169. story points

  1170. us to

  1171. Jesus.

  1172. Joseph is

  1173. the type

  1174. of Christ.

  1175. All

  1176. throughout

  1177. Joseph's

  1178. story,

  1179. he will be

  1180. pointing us

  1181. continually

  1182. back to

  1183. Jesus.

  1184. Always

  1185. back to

  1186. our Lord

  1187. Jesus Christ.

  1188. That's

  1189. where I

  1190. want to

  1191. point you

  1192. today.

  1193. I want

  1194. to point

  1195. you to

  1196. Jesus

  1197. Christ,

  1198. the favored

  1199. son who

  1200. laid down

  1201. his crown,

  1202. laid down

  1203. his throne,

  1204. allowed

  1205. himself to

  1206. come down

  1207. to this

  1208. earth,

  1209. be born

  1210. of the

  1211. virgin,

  1212. humbled

  1213. himself,

  1214. took upon

  1215. him the

  1216. form of

  1217. a servant,

  1218. and laid

  1219. down his

  1220. life

  1221. willingly,

  1222. was

  1223. betrayed

  1224. by his

  1225. own people,

  1226. suffered

  1227. greatly,

  1228. just like

  1229. we will

  1230. see that

  1231. Joseph

  1232. would,

  1233. but became

  1234. the sacrifice

  1235. for you

  1236. and for

  1237. me,

  1238. not for

  1239. his own

  1240. sins,

  1241. but for

  1242. your sin

  1243. and for

  1244. mine.

  1245. Would you

  1246. bow your

  1247. heads with

  1248. me?

  1249. God,

  1250. the sins

  1251. of pride

  1252. and envy

  1253. are sins

  1254. that many

  1255. of us,

  1256. if not

  1257. everyone in

  1258. this room,

  1259. have been

  1260. guilty of.

  1261. We see

  1262. warning signs

  1263. in Genesis

  1264. 37 of

  1265. pride and

  1266. envy.

  1267. We see

  1268. anger,

  1269. we see

  1270. murder,

  1271. we see

  1272. bloodlust,

  1273. we see

  1274. bitterness,

  1275. we see

  1276. so much

  1277. sin,

  1278. but we

  1279. also see

  1280. sacrifice.

  1281. We see

  1282. some

  1283. parallels

  1284. to Jesus

  1285. Christ,

  1286. and I

  1287. pray that

  1288. this morning

  1289. our hearts

  1290. and our

  1291. minds

  1292. would turn

  1293. toward

  1294. Jesus,

  1295. that we

  1296. would remember

  1297. that

  1298. 2,000

  1299. years ago,

  1300. you willingly

  1301. came and

  1302. sacrificed

  1303. yourself for

  1304. our sin.

  1305. It's easy

  1306. to look at

  1307. those brothers

  1308. and see

  1309. them as

  1310. bad people.

  1311. It's a

  1312. little bit

  1313. harder to

  1314. look at

  1315. ourselves and

  1316. see us as

  1317. capable of

  1318. the same.

  1319. I pray

  1320. that you

  1321. would convict

  1322. us of

  1323. our own

  1324. sin,

  1325. and if

  1326. there is

  1327. anyone here

  1328. who has

  1329. not turned

  1330. from our

  1331. sin and

  1332. turned to

  1333. Jesus,

  1334. I pray

  1335. that you

  1336. would let

  1337. today be

  1338. the day

  1339. that they

  1340. make that

  1341. most important

  1342. decision.

  1343. So church,

  1344. while our

  1345. heads are

  1346. bowed in

  1347. this moment

  1348. of privacy,

  1349. I'm going to

  1350. invite you to

  1351. slip your hand

  1352. up right now

  1353. if that's

  1354. you.

  1355. If you'd

  1356. like to

  1357. say today

  1358. is the

  1359. day and

  1360. I'd like

  1361. to turn

  1362. to Jesus

  1363. and make

  1364. him my

  1365. savior,

  1366. would you

  1367. slip your

  1368. hand up

  1369. now and

  1370. I'll pray

  1371. for you.

  1372. Thank you.

  1373. Thank you.

  1374. Thank you.

  1375. Thank you.

  1376. You see

  1377. those hands,

  1378. God.

  1379. If that's

  1380. you,

  1381. I'd like to

  1382. invite you

  1383. while our

  1384. heads are

  1385. bowed

  1386. to just

  1387. pray this

  1388. simple

  1389. prayer.

  1390. Jesus,

  1391. I know

  1392. that I

  1393. am a

  1394. sinner.

  1395. and I

  1396. heard your

  1397. gospel message

  1398. preached today

  1399. and as

  1400. best as I

  1401. know how,

  1402. I place

  1403. all my

  1404. faith in

  1405. you to

  1406. forgive me

  1407. of my

  1408. sin.

  1409. I don't

  1410. trust anyone

  1411. else,

  1412. not the

  1413. preacher,

  1414. not the

  1415. church,

  1416. just Jesus.

  1417. God,

  1418. I

  1419. want to

  1420. meet you

  1421. after the

  1422. service.

  1423. We can

  1424. talk more

  1425. about what

  1426. it means

  1427. to be a

  1428. follower of

  1429. Jesus and

  1430. put your

  1431. faith in

  1432. him.

  1433. You come

  1434. down in

  1435. just a

  1436. moment.

  1437. I'd love to

  1438. have a

  1439. conversation

  1440. with you.

  1441. Church,

  1442. for the

  1443. rest of

  1444. you,

  1445. if there

  1446. is

  1447. something

  1448. that God's

  1449. working on

  1450. your heart

  1451. about,

  1452. if you'd

  1453. like to

  1454. come

  1455. forward and

  1456. talk about

  1457. baptism,

  1458. placing your

  1459. membership in

  1460. this church,

  1461. anything at

  1462. all,

  1463. Jared's going

  1464. to lead us

  1465. in just a

  1466. brief verse

  1467. of a song.

  1468. Now would

  1469. be a great

  1470. time.

  1471. If you'd

  1472. just like to

  1473. come down

  1474. and use

  1475. these steps

  1476. here to

  1477. pray quietly,

  1478. this would

  1479. be the time

  1480. to do that.

  1481. Jared,

  1482. you go ahead

  1483. and lead us

  1484. in song.

  1485. And this is

  1486. a time for

  1487. you,

  1488. if you'd

  1489. like to

  1490. keep your

  1491. seats and

  1492. pray,

  1493. go ahead.

  1494. If you'd

  1495. like to

  1496. sing along,

  1497. this is a

  1498. quiet time

  1499. of reflection

  1500. at this

  1501. time.
