  1. All right, so we are continuing on in our series today on the life of Joseph, meant for good.

  2. And just by way of reminder, our series text is Genesis chapter 50 and verse 20.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  3. You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good to save many people.

  4. You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good to save many people.

  5. A few weeks ago, we covered Genesis chapter 37, and that was the beginning of the story of Joseph, favored but fallen.

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  6. And our takeaway was pride and envy are warning signs, but the start of Joseph's story points us to Jesus.

  7. He is a type of Christ, someone in the Old Testament that points us to the future coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  8. And we see that throughout his story.

  9. And then in week two, we talked about Joseph tempted and tried.

  10. Tempted and tried as he was sold to Potiphar's house as a slave and rose up through the ranks.

  11. And then the boss's wife tried to seduce him, and he stood firm in his faith in God and would not sin in that way.

  12. And so the trials that God allows us to endure are always designed to draw us into closer relationship with him.

  13. And then last Sunday, we talked about Joseph faithful but forgotten.

  14. Faithful but forgotten.

  15. Finding himself in prison, in Pharaoh's prison, after being falsely accused.

  16. And our takeaway last Sunday was to let your season of divine delay make a discernible difference in how you live your faith.

  17. Not just giving lip service to your faith, saying this is what I believe, but actually how does that affect your life?

  18. We saw Joseph continue to grow throughout this season of delay, this in the meantime season for Joseph.

  19. So now we're on to week four, and that is filled and fruitful.

  20. Joseph, filled and fruitful.

  21. Would you turn to Genesis chapter 41 with me?

    Genesis 41 chapter mention

  22. And just because you've been sitting a little while, if you're able to join us in standing,

  23. would you mind joining us in standing as we read Genesis chapter 41?

    Genesis 41 chapter mention

  24. Just the first eight verses, and we'll continue on following that.

  25. Genesis 41, verse 1.

    Genesis 41:1

  26. I'm reading from the New Living Translation this morning.

  27. Two full years later, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing on the bank of the Nile River.

  28. In his dream, he saw seven fat, healthy cows come up out of the river and begin grazing in the marsh grass.

  29. Then he saw seven more cows come up from behind them from the Nile, but these were scrawny and thin.

  30. These cows stood beside the fat cows on the river bank.

  31. Then the scrawny, thin cows ate the seven healthy, fat cows.

  32. At this point in the dream, Pharaoh woke up.

  33. But he fell asleep again and had a second dream.

  34. This time he saw seven heads of grain, plump and beautiful, growing on a single stalk.

  35. Then appeared seven more heads of grain, and these were shriveled and withered by the east wind.

  36. These thin heads swallowed up the seven plump, well-formed heads.

  37. Then Pharaoh woke up again and realized it was a dream.

  38. The next morning, Pharaoh was very disturbed by the dreams.

  39. So he called for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt.

  40. And when Pharaoh told them his dreams, not one of them could tell him what they meant.

  41. Let's pray together now.

  42. God, please give us insight to the reading of your word.

  43. Let your spirit transform the text to apply individually to our lives

  44. and teach us what we need to learn from this morning.

  45. I pray that you would call each of us into a season of fruitfulness by your Holy Spirit.

  46. We'll give you the glory for it.

  47. It's in your name we pray.

  48. Amen.

  49. You may be seated.

  50. Thanks for standing.

  51. So the introduction here to our passage is that a full two years have passed

  52. since Joseph had this amazing victory where God gave him the interpretation of the dreams

  53. for the two VIP prisoners, Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker.

  54. God used him so powerfully, growing him through this time, giving him this wisdom and insight

  55. like he does to all of us as he grows us often in difficult seasons of life.

  56. But then two years passed.

  57. Can you imagine after Joseph had had this breakthrough moment

  58. where God gave him the interpretation of these dreams,

  59. he shared it with these guys,

  60. and then perhaps he had received word that they got out of jail

  61. and it happened exactly as God had said it would.

  62. like it always does.

  63. But can you imagine every day for two years waiting,

  64. wondering if that cupbearer would remember you?

  65. Would you ever get out?

  66. It all worked out great for him.

  67. Not so great for the baker,

  68. but it all worked out great for the cupbearer,

  69. but it hadn't yet worked out for Joseph.

  70. You ever been there?

  71. You ever been in a waiting season of life?

  72. Especially when someone else around you is thriving?

  73. They seem to be in a season of victory and you're just not there.

  74. You're just not experiencing it.

  75. You're thinking,

  76. what's wrong with me?

  77. God,

  78. why aren't you coming through?

  79. What am I not doing?

  80. I'm asking,

  81. I'm seeking,

  82. I'm knocking at the door,

  83. and you just don't seem to be answering.

  84. You don't seem to be coming through.

  85. Why?

  86. May I remind you

  87. that while we're waiting,

  88. God is working.

  89. While Joseph was waiting,

  90. God was working.

  91. And we see it happen.

  92. The Bible teaches us that one day,

  93. in God's eyes,

  94. is as a thousand years.

  95. Now that may not give a lot of encouragement to you,

  96. and you say,

  97. man,

  98. a thousand years seems like a long time,

  99. and

  100. that's just one day in God's eyes.

  101. Not sure if I can wait that long, God.

  102. Need you to come through a little faster than that.

  103. I can't imagine what that two years was like for Joseph.

  104. Thinking,

  105. God,

  106. I stayed faithful to you.

  107. I did what you required of me.

  108. I did not give in to the temptation.

  109. I gave the accurate interpretation that your spirit gave to me,

  110. to these two guys,

  111. and now,

  112. I'm paying this price

  113. that I don't believe I deserve.

  114. Let's look back at verse 1 of Genesis 41.

  115. Two full years later,

  116. Pharaoh dreams a dream.

  117. These dreams are very similar.

  118. The fat, healthy cows

  119. versus the scrawny, thin cows.

  120. And then he has the second dream,

  121. the seven heads of grain,

  122. plump and beautiful,

  123. and then the seven heads of grain

  124. that were shriveled and withered.

  125. And of course,

  126. the shriveled and withered

  127. and the thin and scrawny

  128. ate that which was healthy and plump.

  129. And so what does this mean?

  130. Well, Joseph is going to get his chance.

  131. But first,

  132. Pharaoh turned to those that he thought

  133. could interpret it.

  134. He turned to those

  135. that in the system of ancient Egypt

  136. Egypt were set up

  137. to interpret these dreams.

  138. His wise men,

  139. his magicians,

  140. he called them

  141. and he told them his dreams

  142. and not one of them

  143. could tell him what they meant.

  144. Surprise, surprise.

  145. When it comes down to it,

  146. the world will always fail.

  147. Worldly wisdom

  148. will always ultimately fail you.

  149. So may I remind you, church,

  150. as people of God,

  151. why would we then turn

  152. to that which will ultimately fail?

  153. But we find ourselves doing it

  154. like Pharaoh

  155. time and time again.

  156. The difference is

  157. Pharaoh didn't know better.

  158. That's all he knew to do.

  159. But we as the people of God

  160. should know better

  161. than to turn ourselves

  162. to worldly wisdom.

  163. But we do it.

  164. We do it continually.

  165. We do it when it comes

  166. to the areas of life

  167. that we're not sure about.

  168. And our trust in God

  169. starts to fade

  170. and we turn to the wisdom

  171. of this world

  172. and we find ourselves

  173. making decisions

  174. based on the wisdom

  175. of this world

  176. rather than the wisdom

  177. that comes from God.

  178. And that always

  179. will ultimately lead us

  180. to failure.

  181. At some point,

  182. you're going to run out

  183. of human answers.

  184. At some point,

  185. we will always run out

  186. of answers or explanations

  187. for the season

  188. we're going through.

  189. I'm sure Joseph

  190. ran out of reasons

  191. for why God

  192. was allowing him

  193. to sit in that prison.

  194. And Pharaoh certainly

  195. had no answers

  196. for the interpretation

  197. of his dream.

  198. Have you ever been

  199. at a point where you

  200. tried to figure out

  201. why God was doing something?

  202. You ever tried to do that?

  203. Maybe even in hindsight

  204. looking back,

  205. well, maybe God

  206. was doing this.

  207. Guys,

  208. we don't know

  209. why God does

  210. what he does.

  211. But we can trust

  212. that what he does

  213. is good

  214. and what he does

  215. is right.

  216. And what he does

  217. is best.

  218. So worldly wisdom

  219. will always ultimately

  220. fail.

  221. I had it on the screen.

  222. There it is.

  223. Worldly wisdom

  224. will always

  225. ultimately fail.

  226. Romans 1.22

  227. gives us a great text

  228. about that.

  229. They claim to be wise

  230. but they are fools.

  231. You ever run into somebody

  232. that claimed to be wise

  233. and they thought

  234. they had all the answers

  235. but after they taught

  236. for a while

  237. you realize

  238. he's a fool.

  239. She's a fool.

  240. Nothing but foolishness

  241. ends up coming out

  242. although in their own minds

  243. they are so wise.

  244. Y'all,

  245. ultimately

  246. the wisdom of the world

  247. will always lead.

  248. Those wisest

  249. in all of its pursuits

  250. will ultimately

  251. reveal themselves

  252. to be fools

  253. apart from God

  254. and his wisdom

  255. because human answers

  256. are eventually

  257. going to run out.

  258. Genesis 41

    Genesis 41:9

  259. verse 9.

  260. Let's get down

  261. and continue our story.

  262. Finally,

  263. what Joseph

  264. had been waiting on

  265. happened.

  266. The king's chief

  267. cupbearer spoke up.

  268. Today I have been

  269. reminded of my failure

  270. he told Pharaoh.

  271. Some time ago

  272. you were angry

  273. with the chief baker

  274. and me

  275. and you imprisoned us

  276. in the palace

  277. of the captain of the guard.

  278. Boy,

  279. I wouldn't have wanted

  280. to bring that up again

  281. if I was the cupbearer.

  282. Remember that thing I did

  283. that made you so mad

  284. that you threw me

  285. in prison?

  286. Just kind of would have

  287. wanted Pharaoh

  288. to move on from that

  289. and not dredge that memory up,

  290. right?

  291. But he realized

  292. how critical

  293. this situation was

  294. and so he reminded

  295. Pharaoh

  296. of what

  297. had happened

  298. and he said

  299. one night

  300. the chief baker

  301. and I

  302. each had a dream

  303. and each dream

  304. had its own meaning

  305. and there was

  306. a young Hebrew man

  307. with us

  308. in the prison

  309. who was a slave

  310. of the captain

  311. of the guard

  312. Potiphar,

  313. right?

  314. We told him

  315. our dreams

  316. and he told us

  317. what each of our

  318. dreams meant.

  319. Wow!

  320. Pharaoh's got to be

  321. looking at him.

  322. You're just now

  323. telling me this?

  324. And everything

  325. that happened,

  326. everything happened

  327. just as he had

  328. predicted.

  329. I was restored

  330. to my position

  331. as cupbearer.

  332. The chief baker

  333. was executed

  334. and impaled

  335. on a pole.

  336. Yikes!

  337. Verse 14

  338. Pharaoh sent

  339. for Joseph

  340. at once

  341. and he was

  342. quickly brought

  343. from the prison.

  344. Well yeah,

  345. if all his wise men,

  346. if the system

  347. had failed Pharaoh,

  348. everyone who was

  349. supposed to be able

  350. to give him answers

  351. had no answers

  352. and now one of his

  353. most trusted advisors

  354. who he had gone

  355. through a trial

  356. with,

  357. a storm with,

  358. and he had

  359. doubted his loyalty

  360. and had to throw him

  361. into prison

  362. and then finally

  363. had it reconfirmed

  364. somehow

  365. and trusted the guy

  366. again and now

  367. he's telling him,

  368. by the way,

  369. there's a guy

  370. in that prison

  371. that I was in.

  372. Who can explain

  373. this to you?

  374. Then he said,

  375. get him here.

  376. Then he sent

  377. for Joseph,

  378. he was quickly brought

  379. and after he shaved

  380. and changed his clothes,

  381. Joseph went in

  382. and stood before Pharaoh.

  383. Verse 15,

  384. then Pharaoh

  385. said to Joseph,

  386. I had a dream

  387. last night

  388. and no one

  389. here can tell me

  390. what it means

  391. but I've heard

  392. that when you hear

  393. about a dream,

  394. you can interpret it.

  395. This was Joseph's

  396. big moment.

  397. Joseph could have said,

  398. yeah,

  399. listen, Pharaoh,

  400. I got this special gift,

  401. all right?

  402. I got this special ability.

  403. You tell me what you need,

  404. I'm your guy,

  405. okay?

  406. I'll tell you

  407. what it means

  408. but that's not

  409. how Joseph responded.

  410. This was his big moment

  411. to win the favor

  412. of the king,

  413. Pharaoh to impress him,

  414. to get high up

  415. in his regard.

  416. He could have let

  417. Pharaoh make him

  418. possibly the chief

  419. wise man

  420. in Egypt

  421. but instead he said,

  422. I'm sorry, Pharaoh.

  423. I can't do this.

  424. That's what he said.

  425. He said,

  426. it's beyond my power

  427. to do this.

  428. I can't help you.

  429. I can't tell you

  430. your dream.

  431. And in my playing

  432. out of this story,

  433. there's a dramatic

  434. pause right there.

  435. And Pharaoh's

  436. probably looking at him,

  437. well, that's not

  438. what I heard about you.

  439. That's disappointing.

  440. And then he's probably

  441. giving the side eye

  442. to the chief cupbearer

  443. saying,

  444. I thought this guy

  445. was supposed to be able

  446. to come through for me.

  447. But then Joseph

  448. kept talking.

  449. He said,

  450. but God

  451. can

  452. tell you

  453. what it means

  454. and set you

  455. at ease.

  456. I can't

  457. but God

  458. can.

  459. And that's a reminder

  460. that I believe

  461. every one of us

  462. needs to walk out of here

  463. with this morning.

  464. It's beyond my power

  465. but God

  466. can.

  467. Listen,

  468. you might come up

  469. up against something

  470. that you cannot

  471. figure out a way through.

  472. It's beyond your power

  473. but God

  474. can.

  475. As a child of God,

  476. you know that.

  477. You have full knowledge

  478. and understanding

  479. and belief

  480. and faith

  481. that God can.

  482. Otherwise,

  483. you never would have

  484. put your faith in him

  485. for the forgiveness

  486. of your sins.

  487. But if you believe

  488. that God

  489. can

  490. forgive your sin,

  491. conquer death,

  492. rise victoriously

  493. from the grave,

  494. then you believe

  495. also that God

  496. has power

  497. over whatever

  498. you're coming up

  499. against in your life.

  500. And that kind of power

  501. is available to you

  502. all day,

  503. every day.

  504. So when you come up

  505. against a problem,

  506. it's not,

  507. oh man,

  508. what are we going to do?

  509. It's not pulling out

  510. your hair

  511. and thinking

  512. this is it,

  513. this is the end.

  514. It's thinking

  515. I can't

  516. but God can.

  517. If there's a problem

  518. at work,

  519. if there's a problem

  520. with your finances,

  521. if there's a problem

  522. with a relationship,

  523. if there's a problem

  524. with your mind

  525. and your struggle

  526. and your own self

  527. and your own heart,

  528. I can't

  529. but God can.

  530. powerful words

  531. from Joseph

  532. spoken to this Pharaoh.

  533. It's beyond

  534. my power

  535. but God

  536. can.

  537. He had the opportunity

  538. to give himself

  539. the glory

  540. but he pointed

  541. all glory

  542. to God.

  543. How many times

  544. do you and I

  545. do that?

  546. Or do we

  547. instead

  548. try to give

  549. all the glory

  550. to ourselves

  551. and forget

  552. to give God

  553. the glory

  554. for what he's done?

  555. all the glory

  556. and the honor

  557. to the son.

  558. My sins are forgiven.

  559. My future is heaven.

  560. I thank God

  561. and I give him

  562. the glory

  563. for what he's done.

  564. Worldly wisdom

  565. had failed Pharaoh

  566. and now Joseph

  567. tells him

  568. I'm sorry

  569. I can't help you.

  570. I'm just like

  571. all your other wise men.

  572. I can't help you

  573. but there is

  574. a God in heaven.

  575. Just like Daniel said

  576. we talked about it

  577. last week

  578. when he was facing

  579. King Nebuchadnezzar

  580. in Babylon

  581. many years later

  582. he said

  583. there is a God

  584. in heaven

  585. who can help you

  586. with this

  587. and Joseph

  588. told him the same thing.

  589. God can tell you

  590. what it means.

  591. At some point

  592. folks

  593. we're going to run out

  594. of human answers

  595. and we've got to turn

  596. to that God in heaven

  597. and say God

  598. I know you can.

  599. Whatever it is

  600. I know you can.

  601. Back in King

  602. Jehoshaphat

  603. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 20 chapter mention

  604. chapter 20

  605. and verse 12

  606. King Jehoshaphat

  607. was leading God's people

  608. up against attacks

  609. from the armies of Moab

  610. and the armies of Ammon

  611. two of the most powerful

  612. armies of the day.

  613. They were certainly outnumbered.

  614. They certainly had no chance

  615. to win this victory

  616. and King Jehoshaphat

  617. turned to God

  618. as the leader of God's people

  619. and said

  620. our God

  621. we have no power

  622. to face this vast army

  623. that's attacking us.

  624. We do not know what to do

  625. but our eyes

  626. are on you.

  627. 2 Chronicles

  628. 2 Chronicles

  629. 20-12

  630. I think if there's a verse

  631. you can commit to memory

  632. that has to do

  633. with this theme

  634. this is one of the best ones

  635. you can find.

  636. Our eyes

  637. are fixed

  638. on you.

  639. Our eyes

  640. are turned

  641. toward you.

  642. We have no power

  643. against this enemy.

  644. We don't know

  645. what to do.

  646. Admitting that

  647. is hard for us.

  648. It's hard for American men

  649. but listen

  650. it's hard for any of us

  651. right

  652. to admit that

  653. we don't know

  654. what to do

  655. in this situation

  656. but sometimes

  657. that's what we have to do

  658. and just say

  659. God

  660. I don't know

  661. I don't know

  662. what to do.

  663. Boy it's hard

  664. for bosses

  665. to admit that.

  666. You're supposed

  667. to have all the answers.

  668. You're supposed

  669. to have a plan.

  670. You're supposed

  671. to have a vision.

  672. The king himself

  673. had to stand

  674. before God

  675. and say

  676. God

  677. I don't know

  678. what to do.

  679. I don't know

  680. how to win this.

  681. We've got an army

  682. coming up against us.

  683. Two armies

  684. joined together.

  685. They knew

  686. they couldn't

  687. maybe defeat us

  688. single handedly

  689. against themselves

  690. because we have

  691. God fighting for us

  692. but now they've

  693. joined together.

  694. We have no might here.

  695. We have no power here.

  696. There's no military strategy

  697. that allows us

  698. to win this battle.

  699. Our eyes

  700. are on you.

  701. What are you

  702. going to do God?

  703. What did he do?

  704. God said

  705. stand still

  706. and see

  707. the salvation

  708. of the Lord.

  709. He said

  710. don't do anything.

  711. Let me fight

  712. this battle for you.

  713. Sit this one out.

  714. I'll fight it for you

  715. and God won

  716. one of those

  717. powerful battles

  718. that we have

  719. victories

  720. that we ever see

  721. recorded in scriptures

  722. or in history

  723. that day.

  724. That's not the only time

  725. we see this happening.

  726. 2 Corinthians 12

    2 Corinthians 12:5–10

  727. verses 5 through 10

  728. the apostle Paul

  729. you might think of him

  730. as one of the greatest

  731. Christians that we ever

  732. get to see in the Bible.

  733. He had a special

  734. relationship with God

  735. but he reveals

  736. his vulnerability

  737. here in 2 Corinthians.

  738. He said

  739. I will boast

  740. only about my weaknesses.

  741. If I wanted to boast

  742. I would be no fool

  743. in doing so

  744. because I would be

  745. telling the truth

  746. but I won't do it.

  747. He said

  748. I have a lot

  749. to boast about.

  750. Humanly speaking

  751. I've accomplished

  752. a lot

  753. both before Christ

  754. and after I was

  755. converted

  756. I have done

  757. a lot of great things

  758. I have a lot of things

  759. to boast about

  760. but you're not going to

  761. catch me boasting

  762. about them.

  763. I'm not going to

  764. give you

  765. all the records

  766. of my exploits

  767. and accomplishments.

  768. I'm not going to

  769. point it

  770. all the attention

  771. to myself.

  772. I'm going to be

  773. like Joseph

  774. and I'm going to say

  775. I can't

  776. but God can.

  777. He said

  778. I won't do it

  779. because I don't want

  780. anyone to give me

  781. credit

  782. credit

  783. beyond what

  784. they can see

  785. in my life

  786. or hear

  787. in my message.

  788. That's what it was

  789. about for Paul.

  790. It was about

  791. follow me

  792. as I follow Jesus.

  793. What you see me

  794. doing in my life

  795. and the message

  796. that you hear me

  797. proclaiming

  798. in our starting point

  799. course this morning

  800. the foundational

  801. discipleship truths

  802. that we're going through

  803. with some of our folks.

  804. We talked about

  805. the gospel message

  806. this morning.

  807. That is the mission

  808. of the church.

  809. That is the message

  810. of scripture

  811. from the Old Testament

  812. to the New Testament

  813. from Genesis

  814. to Revelation

  815. everything that we see

  816. in the Bible

  817. points to a single message

  818. salvation in Jesus.

  819. That's before you're saved

  820. and that's after you're saved.

  821. There's still salvation

  822. in Jesus.

  823. He's still the one

  824. we turn to

  825. and so Paul said

  826. I don't want them

  827. to see anything beyond

  828. what they hear

  829. in my message

  830. what they see

  831. in my life

  832. even though I've received

  833. wonderful revelations

  834. from God

  835. but to keep me

  836. from becoming proud

  837. I was given

  838. a thorn in my flesh

  839. a messenger from Satan

  840. to torment me

  841. and keep me

  842. from becoming proud.

  843. People have tried

  844. to figure out

  845. what that thorn

  846. in the flesh was

  847. that Paul was talking about.

  848. He never really told us

  849. but whatever it was

  850. it kept him humble.

  851. It was his weak spot.

  852. Was it a physical problem?

  853. Was it a sin problem?

  854. We don't know

  855. what it was for Paul

  856. but it was something

  857. that aggravated him

  858. like crazy.

  859. It bugged the fire

  860. out of him.

  861. He wished

  862. he could overcome it.

  863. He wished

  864. he could conquer it

  865. but he couldn't

  866. ever do it.

  867. You ever had something

  868. you just can't overcome?

  869. You just can't get past?

  870. Maybe it's a physical problem.

  871. Maybe it's a mental hang up.

  872. Something that you just

  873. can't seem

  874. to resolve.

  875. You're right there with Paul.

  876. He said it kept me

  877. from becoming proud

  878. because those of us

  879. who maybe have a blind spot

  880. toward our weaknesses

  881. maybe we've become

  882. a little proud.

  883. Maybe we feel like

  884. we've got it all figured out.

  885. We would never say

  886. that we're sinless

  887. but we kind of

  888. act like we are.

  889. We would never say

  890. that we can't be wrong

  891. but we kind of

  892. act that way.

  893. Paul didn't want

  894. that to happen.

  895. He said God

  896. three different times

  897. I begged God

  898. to take this thorn

  899. in my flesh

  900. away from me

  901. and each time

  902. he said

  903. my grace

  904. is all you need.

  905. Don't miss this.

  906. My power

  907. works best

  908. works best

  909. in weakness.

  910. So now I'm glad

  911. to boast about my weaknesses

  912. so the power of Christ

  913. can work

  914. through me.

  915. That was what it was about

  916. for Paul.

  917. He said

  918. that's why I take pleasure

  919. in these weaknesses.

  920. I've grown to the point

  921. in my Christian faith

  922. where I'm not trying

  923. to be perfect anymore.

  924. I'm thanking God

  925. for the weaknesses

  926. that he's given me

  927. because I realize

  928. that when I am weak

  929. then I am strong

  930. in his strength.

  931. I take pleasure

  932. in the weaknesses.

  933. I take pleasure

  934. in the insults.

  935. I take pleasure

  936. in the hardships.

  937. I take pleasure

  938. in the persecution.

  939. I take pleasure

  940. in the trouble

  941. that I suffer

  942. for Christ

  943. because when I am weak

  944. then I am strong.

  945. So

  946. it's beyond my power

  947. but God can.

  948. It's one of the biggest themes

  949. of Genesis 41 here.

  950. I don't want you to miss it.

  951. Let's look back

  952. at the text.

  953. Verse 17.

  954. So

  955. what happened?

  956. Pharaoh told Joseph

  957. his dream.

  958. Joseph said

  959. I can't do it.

  960. It's beyond my power

  961. but God can tell you

  962. what it means

  963. and set you at ease.

  964. Boy,

  965. Pharaoh was happy

  966. to hear

  967. that God

  968. this God of Joseph

  969. could set him at ease.

  970. So he said

  971. why not?

  972. Let's give it a try.

  973. In my dream

  974. he said

  975. I'm standing

  976. on the bank

  977. of the Nile River.

  978. I saw seven fat

  979. healthy cows

  980. come up out of the river

  981. began to grazing

  982. in the marsh grass

  983. but then I saw

  984. seven sick looking cows

  985. scrawny and thin

  986. coming up after them.

  987. I've never seen

  988. such sorry looking animals

  989. in all the land of Egypt.

  990. Pharaoh was kind of

  991. giving his commentary

  992. about his dream.

  993. These thin scrawny cows

  994. ate the seven fat cows

  995. but afterward

  996. you wouldn't have known it

  997. for they were still

  998. as thin and scrawny

  999. as before.

  1000. Then I woke up.

1001. Then he had another dream

  1002. and in my dream

  1003. I also saw

  1004. seven heads of grain

  1005. full beautiful

1006. growing on a single stalk

  1007. then seven more heads

  1008. of grain appeared

  1009. but these were blighted

  1010. shriveled and withered

  1011. by the east wind

  1012. and the shriveled heads

  1013. swallowed the seven

  1014. healthy heads

1015. and I told these dreams

  1016. to the magicians

1017. but no one could tell me

  1018. what they mean.

  1019. So Joseph responded

  1020. both of Pharaoh's dreams

  1021. mean the same thing.

  1022. God is telling Pharaoh

  1023. in advance

1024. what he is about to do.

  1025. The seven healthy cows

  1026. the seven healthy heads

  1027. of grain

  1028. both represent

  1029. seven years of prosperity.

  1030. Basically Pharaoh

1031. this was the same dream

1032. and you had it twice

  1033. using two different examples.

  1034. Alright?

1035. The seven thin scrawny cows

  1036. that came up later

  1037. the seven thin heads

  1038. of grain

1039. withered by the east wind

  1040. represent seven years

  1041. of famine.

  1042. This will happen

1043. just as I have described it

  1044. for God has revealed

  1045. to Pharaoh in advance

1046. what he is about to do.

  1047. Pharaoh you should

  1048. consider yourself blessed

  1049. because God has revealed

  1050. to you

1051. what he is about to do.

  1052. The next seven years

  1053. will be a period

  1054. of great prosperity

1055. throughout the land of Egypt

  1056. but afterward

  1057. there will be

  1058. seven years of famine

  1059. so great

  1060. that all the prosperity

  1061. will be forgotten

  1062. in Egypt.

  1063. Famine will destroy

  1064. the land.

  1065. This famine

  1066. will be so severe

  1067. that even the memory

  1068. of the good years

  1069. will be erased.

  1070. As for having

  1071. two similar dreams

  1072. it means that

  1073. these events

  1074. have been decreed

  1075. by God

  1076. and he will soon

  1077. make them happen.

  1078. Just in case

1079. you missed the first one

  1080. God gave you

  1081. another one

  1082. so you're sure

  1083. that this comes

  1084. from him

  1085. and this is going

  1086. to happen.

  1087. Therefore

  1088. Pharaoh should find

  1089. an intelligent

  1090. and wise man

1091. and put him in charge

  1092. of the entire land

  1093. of Egypt.

  1094. Then Pharaoh

  1095. should appoint

  1096. supervisors

  1097. over the land

  1098. and let them collect

  1099. one fifth

  1100. of all the crops

  1101. during the seven

  1102. good years.

  1103. Have them gather

  1104. all the food

1105. produced in the good years

  1106. that are just ahead

  1107. and bring it

  1108. to Pharaoh's storehouses.

  1109. Store it away

  1110. and guard it

  1111. so there will be

  1112. food in the cities.

1113. That way there will be

  1114. enough to eat

  1115. when the seven years

  1116. of famine

  1117. come to the land

  1118. of Egypt.

  1119. Otherwise

  1120. this famine

  1121. will destroy

  1122. the land.

  1123. Verse 37

  1124. Joseph's suggestions

  1125. were well received

  1126. by Pharaoh

  1127. and his officials.

  1128. So Pharaoh

  1129. asked his officials

  1130. can we find

  1131. anyone else

  1132. like this man

  1133. so obviously

  1134. filled

  1135. with the spirit

  1136. of God?

  1137. Did you catch that?

  1138. Can we find

  1139. anyone else

  1140. like this man

  1141. so obviously

  1142. filled

  1143. with the spirit

  1144. of God?

  1145. Here's my question.

  1146. Is it obvious

  1147. to those around you

  1148. that you're filled

  1149. with the spirit

  1150. of God?

  1151. Boy it was obvious

  1152. in that moment.

  1153. Pharaoh is sitting

  1154. here

  1155. as Joseph

  1156. starts to just

  1157. go off.

  1158. He's explaining

  1159. I feel like

  1160. a mile a minute

  1161. just how this

  1162. is going to go

  1163. and then God

  1164. gives him wisdom

  1165. in this moment

  1166. and not only

  1167. does he explain

  1168. what the dream

  1169. means

  1170. he gives Pharaoh

  1171. advice on what

  1172. to do.

  1173. Here's what it

  1174. means now here's

  1175. how you should

  1176. handle this.

  1177. And Pharaoh's

  1178. just sitting here

  1179. looking at him

  1180. like man I

  1181. haven't heard

  1182. anybody like

  1183. this.

  1184. All these wise

  1185. men all these

  1186. magicians that I

  1187. have surrounded

  1188. me they don't

  1189. hold a candle

  1190. to this guy.

  1191. this guy is

  1192. filled with the

  1193. spirit of a

  1194. real God.

  1195. A true God

  1196. that actually

  1197. gives him wisdom.

  1198. He didn't know

  1199. it was the one

  1200. true only God.

  1201. So is it obvious

  1202. to those around you

  1203. that you're filled

  1204. with the Holy Spirit?

  1205. Or is it more

  1206. obvious that you're

  1207. filled with another

  1208. spirit?

  1209. I'll be honest

  1210. with you I'm the

  1211. pastor and that

  1212. means pastors wake

1213. up and go to bed

  1214. and all the hours

  1215. in between we are

  1216. filled with the

  1217. spirit of God

  1218. right?

  1219. Why y'all laughing?

  1220. Course not.

  1221. We're human like

  1222. anybody else.

  1223. We have to be

  1224. filled moment by

  1225. moment with God's

  1226. spirit just the same

  1227. as you do.

  1228. Joseph needed

  1229. wisdom for that

  1230. moment.

  1231. God's spirit filled

1232. him and gave it to

1233. him and it was so

  1234. evident.

  1235. evidence.

  1236. When was the last

  1237. time that somebody

  1238. said wow you are

  1239. filled with the

  1240. spirit of God?

  1241. If not have you

  1242. got to spend a

  1243. little more time

  1244. with God?

  1245. Have you got to

  1246. intentionally carve

  1247. out time in your

  1248. day whenever that

  1249. is?

  1250. Whether it's waking

  1251. up earlier or

  1252. staying up a little

  1253. later or carving

  1254. out some of your

  1255. lunch break or

  1256. whatever it is

  1257. finding time

  1258. throughout your day

  1259. to intentionally

  1260. stop and turn

  1261. your eyes back to

  1262. Jesus.

  1263. Get in the word.

  1264. Man it's never been

  1265. easier.

  1266. The Bible gets to

  1267. go around with us

  1268. on our phones now.

  1269. We always have

  1270. access to God's

  1271. word and we

  1272. always everywhere we

  1273. go have access to

  1274. prayer.

  1275. Talking to our

  1276. Lord.

  1277. Anytime, any

  1278. place we can stop

  1279. and be filled again

  1280. with the spirit of

  1281. God.

  1282. He's always

  1283. present.

  1284. He's always with

  1285. us.

  1286. We believe that if

  1287. you place your

  1288. faith in Jesus

  1289. Christ then his

  1290. spirit comes and

  1291. lives inside and

  1292. goes around with you

  1293. everywhere.

1294. But if you want to

  1295. be filled with the

  1296. fullness, with the

  1297. goodness, with the

  1298. power, with the

  1299. transforming grace,

  1300. love, the attributes

1301. of the spirit of God,

  1302. the fruit of the

  1303. spirit of God, you

  1304. want to be filled

  1305. with that and see

  1306. that make a

  1307. difference in your

  1308. life?

  1309. You got to stop

  1310. and make time for

  1311. him.

1312. See what he has to

  1313. say.

  1314. Listen to him.

  1315. Let him speak to

  1316. you.

1317. So is it obvious that

  1318. you're filled with the

1319. spirit of God like it

  1320. was for Joseph?

  1321. And then in verse

  1322. 39, we're picking it

  1323. up and we're almost

  1324. finished.

  1325. Then Pharaoh said to

  1326. Joseph, first he looks

1327. at the guys around him,

  1328. can you believe this

  1329. guy?

  1330. We've never seen

  1331. anything like him.

  1332. This guy is filled

1333. with the spirit of God.

1334. And then he said to

  1335. Joseph, since God has

  1336. revealed the meaning

1337. of the dreams to you,

1338. clearly no one else is

  1339. as intelligent or wise

  1340. as you are.

  1341. Something that no one's

  1342. ever said to me.

1343. No one else is as

  1344. intelligent or wise as

  1345. you are.

  1346. That's all right.

1347. You will be in charge.

1348. If y'all come up after

1349. church and say that to

1350. me, I'm going to know

  1351. that you're not being

  1352. sincere, okay?

1353. You will be in charge

1354. of my court and all my

  1355. people will take orders

  1356. from you.

1357. Only I sitting on my

1358. throne will have a rank

  1359. higher than you.

  1360. Wow!

  1361. Joseph went from zero

1362. to hero in no time

  1363. at all.

  1364. This guy was promoted

1365. in the blink of an eye.

  1366. I have to question

  1367. maybe Pharaoh's methods

  1368. of promoting staff here,

  1369. but elected officials,

  1370. there was no elected

  1371. officials, was there?

1372. This guy is now second

1373. in command of all of

  1374. Egypt just because

  1375. Pharaoh was amazed at

  1376. the way he interpreted

  1377. his dream.

  1378. But Pharaoh sensed

  1379. something about this

  1380. guy.

1381. He knew that there was

  1382. something different.

1383. He knew that it was

  1384. God's spirit and I

  1385. believe God maybe

  1386. prompted him to do

  1387. this.

  1388. So he said,

  1389. now you only answer

  1390. to me.

1391. You are in charge of

  1392. everything else in my

  1393. nation.

  1394. Pharaoh said to Joseph,

1395. I hereby put you in

  1396. charge of the entire

  1397. land of Egypt.

1398. Can y'all just stop and

  1399. realize what's happening

  1400. here?

  1401. Joseph's ship finally came

  1402. in.

  1403. Anybody know what that

  1404. means when your ship

  1405. comes in?

1406. I heard that growing up.

1407. It's like the big great

  1408. thing that you've been

  1409. waiting for finally

  1410. happens.

  1411. Everything had been

  1412. going bad for Joseph

1413. time and time and time

1414. and time again and then

  1415. finally, boom, it all

  1416. came together.

  1417. And Pharaoh says,

1418. now I place you in

  1419. charge of the entire

  1420. land of Egypt.

  1421. Last night you slept

  1422. in a jail cell.

  1423. Tonight you're sleeping

  1424. in the palace.

  1425. Then Pharaoh removed

1426. his signet ring from his

1427. hand and placed it on

  1428. Joseph's finger.

1429. He dressed him in fine

  1430. linen clothing and hung

1431. a gold chain around his

  1432. neck.

1433. Then he had Joseph ride

  1434. in the chariot reserved

  1435. for his second in

  1436. command.

  1437. And wherever Joseph

  1438. went, the command was

  1439. shouted, kneel down.

1440. So Pharaoh put Joseph in

1441. charge of all of Egypt

1442. and Pharaoh said to him,

1443. I am Pharaoh, but no

1444. one will lift a hand or

1445. foot in the entire land

  1446. of Egypt without your

  1447. approval.

  1448. Don't mistake this,

  1449. Pharaoh, Joseph.

  1450. I'm still in charge,

  1451. all right?

  1452. I'm still Pharaoh.

1453. But besides me, you're in

  1454. charge of everyone else.

  1455. I finally found a guy I

  1456. can trust.

  1457. I finally found a guy I

  1458. believe in.

  1459. I finally found a guy I

  1460. have absolute confidence in

  1461. because you're different.

1462. So I'm putting you in

  1463. charge of everyone else.

  1464. Then Pharaoh gave Joseph

  1465. a new Egyptian name,

  1466. Zephanath-Paneah.

  1467. I like Joseph better

  1468. myself, but that's all

  1469. right.

1470. He gave him a wife whose

1471. name was Asenath and she

  1472. was the daughter of

  1473. Potiphar, the priest of

  1474. On.

  1475. Just in case you're

  1476. thinking, it seems like

  1477. those are two different

  1478. people, okay?

  1479. If you're thinking,

  1480. Potiphar and Potiphar,

  1481. the same people, it

  1482. seemed like they were

  1483. two different people.

1484. If you want to argue

1485. that with me, we can

  1486. talk after.

  1487. That's all right.

1488. But at first I was

  1489. looking at this.

  1490. Did he marry Potiphar's

  1491. daughter?

  1492. How crazy would that

  1493. be?

1494. It seemed like they were

  1495. two different people.

1496. For one, this guy was a

  1497. priest and the other

1498. one was the captain of

  1499. the guard.

  1500. So Joseph, sorry, a

  1501. minute, just lost my

  1502. place.

  1503. Here we go.

  1504. So Joseph, end of

  1505. verse 45, right?

  1506. There we go.

  1507. Joseph took charge of

  1508. the entire land of

  1509. Egypt.

  1510. Can you believe this?

  1511. What a transformation.

1512. And Joseph is a type of

  1513. Christ.

  1514. Joseph was first humbled

1515. and then he was exalted.

  1516. Philippians 2 says this,

1517. let us be like Christ

1518. Jesus who took the humble

  1519. position of a slave.

  1520. He humbled himself in

  1521. obedience to God.

1522. Now God has elevated him

1523. to a place of the highest

1524. honor and given him the

  1525. name above all other

  1526. names.

1527. So at the name of Jesus,

  1528. every knee should bow.

  1529. You see what was

  1530. happening in Egypt with

  1531. Joseph.

1532. They would all have to

1533. kneel to him as he drove

  1534. by in the chariot.

  1535. And someday every knee

  1536. will bow to Joseph,

  1537. to Jesus.

  1538. I'm sorry.

  1539. Not Joseph.

  1540. Yeah, not, not, not

  1541. Joseph.

1542. They're not going to bow

  1543. to Joseph anymore.

1544. That was just for that

  1545. time.

1546. But now for all ages,

  1547. every knee someday will

1548. bow to Jesus in heaven

1549. and on earth and under

1550. the earth and every tongue

1551. will declare that he is

1552. Lord to the glory of God

  1553. the Father.

1554. So once again, we see a

  1555. type of Christ here.

1556. And that is the nations

  1557. blessed through him.

1558. So we see that Jesus was

  1559. lifted up.

1560. He was a slave and then

  1561. he was lifted up.

1562. And then we're going to

1563. see that the nations were

  1564. blessed through Joseph,

1565. just like the nations will

  1566. be blessed by Jesus.

1567. So before we get there,

  1568. would you look here?

  1569. Verse 46.

1570. Let's look back at verse

  1571. 46.

1572. He was 30 years old when he

1573. began serving the court of

  1574. Pharaoh.

  1575. Can I just throw a little

  1576. interjection in here?

  1577. Don't despise young people.

  1578. Okay?

1579. Joseph was younger than I am.

  1580. I'm turning 40 in a couple

  1581. months.

1582. But I'm still young, right?

  1583. How many of y'all think I'm

  1584. young?

1585. The rest of you can just leave,

  1586. all right?

  1587. I'm young.

  1588. Messing.

  1589. Don't leave.

1590. I am young, all right?

1591. Young people, I am young.

  1592. You're old, man.

  1593. No, I'm not.

  1594. Don't despise young people.

1595. The Bible even says, as a

  1596. challenge to young people,

1597. don't let anyone despise your

  1598. youth.

1599. Let it be an example of the

  1600. believers.

1601. Boy, that's exactly what we see

  1602. Joseph doing here.

1603. This guy was in the prime early

1604. years of his life when all this

  1605. was going on.

1606. And by age 30, he sees himself

1607. second in command of all of

  1608. Egypt.

1609. That had to be just a shocking

1610. reality for him to wake up to

  1611. every day.

1612. God brought Joseph from the pit to

1613. the palace, but he was careful to

1614. give God credit for every blessing.

1615. Now, as predicted, God came

  1616. through.

1617. Every time that Joseph predicted

1618. something, we know it came from

1619. God because God came through just

1620. as Joseph had predicted it.

1621. In verse 47, seven years the land

1622. produced bumper crops, and Joseph

1623. gathered all the crops grown in

1624. Egypt and stored the grain from the

1625. surrounding fields in the city,

1626. piled up huge amounts of grain like

  1627. sand on the seashore.

1628. Finally, he stopped keeping records

1629. because it was too much to

  1630. measure.

1631. And during this time, before the

1632. famine years, two sons were born to

1633. Joseph and his wife, Asenath, the

1634. daughter of Potiphar, the priest of

  1635. On.

1636. His oldest son was named Manasseh,

1637. and he said, God has made me forget

1638. all my troubles and everyone in my

  1639. father's family.

1640. And then the second one was named

1641. Ephraim, for he said, God has made

1642. me fruitful in this land of my

  1643. grief.

1644. God gave Joseph everything that he

1645. thought maybe was never going to come

  1646. to pass.

1647. Sitting in that jail cell for two years,

1648. wondering, is God ever going to come

  1649. through?

1650. His faith stayed with him.

1651. And in just a blink of an eye, his

  1652. moment came.

  1653. Your moment will come.

  1654. I don't know what it's going to look

  1655. like.

1656. Can't promise you that you're going to

  1657. be made wealthy.

1658. Can't promise you you're going to be

1659. put in charge of anything.

  1660. I don't know what it's going to look

1661. like for you, but I know that at some

1662. point, God is going to have a moment

1663. for you like he had for Joseph.

1664. And then the waiting period will end.

1665. The in-between period will end.

1666. And then God will say, I need you now.

  1667. And Joseph was ready.

1668. He was called, dragged from the prison

  1669. cell.

1670. Before Pharaoh, boy, his faith had to be

  1671. strong.

1672. Had to be ready in that moment.

  1673. God, I need you.

1674. I need you right now.

1675. Tell me the meaning of this dream.

  1676. And he did.

1677. And then God brought Joseph from nothing

  1678. to everything.

1679. And then gave him a family.

  1680. Gave him sons.

1681. And these names of his sons show that God

1682. gave, Joseph gave God credit for every

  1683. success and every blessing.

1684. And then the nations were blessed

  1685. through him.

  1686. Galatians chapter 3, verse 8.

    Galatians 3:8

1687. The scriptures look forward to this

1688. time when God would make the Gentiles

1689. right in his sight because of their

  1690. faith.

1691. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham

  1692. long ago.

1693. This is the Abrahamic covenant we learned

1694. about a couple Sundays ago.

1695. All nations will be blessed through you.

1696. So all who put their faith in Christ

1697. share the same blessing that Abraham

1698. received because of his faith.

1699. And now Christ has rescued us from the

1700. curse pronounced by the law.

1701. So all of us can now partake in the

1702. same promise that God gave to Abraham

  1703. because of Jesus.

1704. When he was hung on the cross, he took

1705. upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.

1706. Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the

1707. Gentiles with the same blessing that he

  1708. promised to Abraham.

1709. So now we who are believers might receive

1710. the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

1711. Listen, God blessed the nations through

1712. Joseph, but that was just a pale picture of

1713. someday that how God would bless all

  1714. nations through Jesus Christ.

1715. And you and I get to be part of that

  1716. blessing.

  1717. D.L.

  1718. Moody said this quote.

1719. Famous preacher, one of the most famous

1720. preachers in our nation's history.

1721. He said, no one can sum up all God is able to

1722. accomplish through one solitary life,

1723. wholly yielded, adjusted, and obedient to

  1724. him.

1725. We have a hard time with the adjusting part,

  1726. don't we?

1727. We're willing to say, God, I yield myself to

  1728. you.

1729. Whatever you want, I'll do it.

1730. God, I will obey you.

1731. If you command me to do something, I'll do it.

1732. The hard part is adjusting.

1733. What if God wants you to change something?

1734. What if God wants you to stop doing something?

1735. What if God wants you to start doing something?

1736. We fight that sometimes, don't we?

1737. But I think he got it right when he said,

  1738. there's nothing that God can't accomplish.

1739. We can't even begin to sum up what God can

1740. accomplish through one person, adjusted to God.

1741. God, always willing to adjust to what God says.

1742. So, we see at the end of Genesis 41,

1743. the nations carried out what Joseph said.

1744. The wisdom of God came through.

1745. Egypt prospered when the famine came.

  1746. They were ready.

1747. The grain was stored up.

1748. And he was able to feed the nations because of

1749. the wisdom that God had given him.

1750. Folks, there's no limit to what God can do through you.

  1751. There's no limit.

1752. The only limit is us.

1753. Joseph was filled with the Spirit of God.

1754. So much so that the heathen Pharaoh saw it,

  1755. called it out, said,

1756. this man is filled with the Spirit of God.

1757. But to be filled, we have to be empty.

1758. We have a hard time being filled with God's Spirit

1759. because we're filled with everything else, aren't we?

1760. We fill ourselves with everything else under the world.

1761. So we don't have room left for God's Spirit to adjust us,

  1762. to change us.

1763. But there's no limit to what God can do.

1764. Our takeaway this morning is God can do what I cannot do

1765. when I am empty and he fills me.

1766. We saw that play out in Genesis 41.

1767. I can't do it, God, but you can.

1768. So I empty myself and I offer myself to you.

1769. God, fill me and use me to accomplish what you want to do.

1770. Maybe you're going to bless the nations through me.

1771. Maybe you're going to bless my family through me.

1772. Maybe you're going to bless my friends through me.

1773. Maybe you're going to bless my workforce through me.

1774. Maybe you're going to bless my coworkers.

1775. Maybe you're going to bless this county.

1776. Maybe you're going to bless this church.

1777. Maybe you're going to bless far beyond

1778. what I could ever see or predict.

1779. But I've got to empty myself so you can fill me.

1780. Would you bow your heads with me right now?

1781. God, we ask you to do what only you can do.

1782. There are people in this church who love you.

1783. There are people in this church who've been following after you

  1784. for many, many years.

1785. But God, sometimes over the course of following you,

1786. we get filled up with things other than you.

  1787. God, empty us today.

1788. Church, can I ask you this question?

1789. How many of you would say, I know I'm a sinner

1790. and I know that Jesus died for me

1791. and I've never placed my faith in Jesus

1792. for the forgiveness of my sins.

1793. I believe that he died, that he rose again,

1794. that he's alive, and I want to place my faith in Jesus

1795. for the forgiveness of my sins to become his child.

1796. Would anybody here who would say that,

1797. say, I've never done that and I'd like today to be the day.

  1798. Thank you.

  1799. Thank you.

1800. Let me ask you this question.

1801. How many of you would say,

1802. I need to empty myself this morning

1803. so the Holy Spirit can fill me and work through me?

1804. Would you slip your hand up and just say, that's me.

  1805. Thank you.

  1806. Thank you.

1807. God, there's too many hands to count.

1808. And I just need you right now

1809. to work with each person supernaturally.

1810. You can speak to each of us at the same time

1811. and you can show us exactly what we need to let go of,

1812. exactly what we need to change,

1813. exactly what we need to start.

  1814. Empty us, God.

  1815. We're full of pride.

  1816. We're full of fear,

  1817. full of jealousy,

  1818. full of discontentment,

  1819. full of worry,

  1820. full of fatigue.

1821. Sometimes we find our joy in things other than you.

1822. Sometimes we find our confidence in things other than you.

1823. And God, that just fills us up,
