  1. There we go. One, two. Hello. Good morning, guys. Good morning.

  2. Before we get into the message this morning, I'd like to thank Brother Greg for stepping in and leading music for us this morning.

  3. I could have tried to do that, but that is a hard task to do.

  4. So, Greg, thank you so much for stepping in and doing that for us this morning.

  5. And to everybody who sang for us, especially Aubrey and Kennedy, you guys, thank you guys so much.

  6. That was beautiful. Can we give a round of applause for them? That was beautiful, guys.

  7. Thank you so much.

  8. Well, this morning, church, as we prepare ourselves to get into God's Word, I want to take time to pray.

  9. So let us go ahead and go to the Lord in prayer before we begin.

  10. Father, I thank you so much for this morning.

  11. Thank you for all of the bodies that are here in service and are in service online with us.

  12. God, thank you for them and for their ears to hear.

  13. I pray that you would just, as we go through the Word this morning through Isaiah 9,

  14. God, I just pray that you would just please open our hearts, open our minds, open our ears to hear your truth,

  15. whether it be in a way that needs to be heard again and again,

  16. or in a new way that needs to be heard for our hearts.

  17. God, I just pray that you would be glorified and magnified this morning as we dive in to Scripture.

  18. It's in Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Amen.

  19. Well, as I said, if you would not mind turning in your Bibles, hopefully you have your Bibles with you.

  20. If not, you have a phone, and there's plenty of apps you can get the Bible on.

  21. So, go to Isaiah 9, verse 6 for me, if you would.

    Isaiah 9:6

  22. Well, now guys, for me, this is quite an honor to be able to preach like this.

  23. I have led camps. I've done this, that, and the other, but I've never had the chance to lead a Sunday morning.

  24. And so I'm grateful to be able to do this.

  25. I'm thankful to Pastor Sam for allowing me the privilege and honor to preach this morning.

  26. So, if you would not mind standing with me as you're able to,

  27. we will read Isaiah 9, verse 6.

    Isaiah 9:6

  28. Let me turn this little guy on. That way we can get this.

  29. There we go.

  30. And let's read this together. It says,

  31. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

  32. and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

  33. and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

  34. Amen. Amen to that.

  35. That's a beautiful thing. You may be seated.

  36. You may be seated.

  37. That's a beautiful thing to hear this morning in a world of uncertainty and darkness,

  38. knowing that there's a very certain truth that we can hold on to.

  39. And not to beat around the bush, because I totally could just spend all day

  40. trying to tease people on,

  41. Who is this Messiah? Who is this person?

  42. It's Jesus, obviously.

  43. So, I'll get right down to it.

  44. This is kind of some of our main points here.

  45. Jesus is the child born to be obedient to God,

  46. for us, when we couldn't be.

  47. Jesus is the preexistent son given to us,

  48. as a ransom for us.

  49. Jesus is the king of all kings,

  50. as his kingdom is a never-ending rule,

  51. which will bring peace and joy and order to an unruly and wicked reality.

  52. Do you see that in this life?

  53. Do you see the world's really wicked, unruly, just chaotic all the times?

  54. Do you see that in your own personal life?

  55. Sometimes life is chaotic.

  56. There's just turmoil and tumult in your life.

  57. He's not just king of all governments.

  58. He's king of your attempt at an empire, too.

  59. Don't try to build your own empire.

  60. That's free.

  61. That wasn't a sermon.

  62. That's free.

  63. So you guys get that one for free.

  64. But then also, we see Jesus as this wonderful counselor,

  65. whose wisdom and divinity is beyond measure,

  66. and Jesus is the living hope of our souls,

  67. in a hopeless and sinful world.

  68. So the main, the takeaway, the main point is,

  69. Jesus is our trustworthy and wonderful counselor,

  70. and he is the living hope we turn to.

  71. That went weird when it came up there,

  72. but that is what we're focusing on this morning.

  73. Jesus is our trustworthy and wonderful counselor,

  74. and he is the living hope we turn to.

  75. So there's some main points I put up there.

  76. If you're a note taker, you can definitely take those notes there.

  77. If you're not, please feel free just to kind of pour over that.

  78. This morning, we're looking at a child is born.

  79. That means the son of man.

  80. Child is given to us, son of God.

  81. Government shall be upon his shoulders, king of kings.

  82. He is called a wonderful counselor and living hope.

  83. So let's go ahead and dive into that first point, the son of man.

  84. I'll leave this up here for you so you can kind of piecemeal through that as you will.

  85. So the son of man.

  86. Now, I've been known in my preaching to kind of focus heavily on individual words.

  87. I had this really weird belief that words matter a lot.

  88. Nobody laughed.

  89. Gentastic.

  90. But I had this feeling that words matter a lot, and we use words to communicate.

  91. And when you use a wrong word in a sentence, it means completely different things.

  92. I watched this video the other day.

  93. This one lady, she was really angry at this guy, and she said,

  94. Listen, I don't know what you're trying to excavate here.

  95. Honey, excavate's not the right word to use there.

  96. I think you're trying to say, I don't know what you're trying to say.

  97. She used a really weird, I don't know what she was trying to even say, honestly.

  98. She just was really mad.

  99. And sometimes anger gets the better of you, and you use a word that's completely out of left field.

  100. So for me, words are really important.

  101. And you can even ask Wade Pierce.

  102. I went to one Bible study with him, and we chose, there was one word in this Hebrews we were going through,

  103. and I just stuck.

  104. I just get stuck on words.

  105. Words are big and important for us.

  106. So when Isaiah tells us in Isaiah 9, 6, his very first thing he says is,

  107. For us, for to us a child is born, and to us a son is given.

  108. Born and given are two totally different things.

  109. You can give birth, some of us in the room can, but you can give birth,

  110. but you can't just out of nowhere just give a son.

  111. No, a son is born, a son is given.

  112. Those are two different things.

  113. So the statement for to us a child is born is a statement of humanity.

  114. It's a statement of humanity.

  115. This means that the child that is born, that Isaiah is prophesying about,

  116. will be fully man, will be just like a man.

  117. We also know that this, from Isaiah, just a few little bit later, I think, in Isaiah,

  118. you'll see that he says,

  119. A virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.

  120. Which means, most of us know, means God with us.

  121. It means God with us.

  122. But in my study for this, I was kind of, you know, thinking about this.

  123. They didn't call Jesus Immanuel.

  124. Like when Jesus was born, he wasn't called Immanuel.

  125. So why?

  126. That was, that's something that kind of confused me for a little bit.

  127. But in Jewish culture, names meant things.

  128. And sometimes they were just, they were titles given to people.

  129. And so an interesting point to make is that this name does not mean the coming Messiah's name

  130. is actually going to be Immanuel.

  131. It's rather pointing to a title or a characteristic of Jesus.

  132. So this title points us to Jesus, who truly is God with us.

  133. What better picture of God with us do we have than Jesus?

  134. None.

  135. Jesus is the incarnate Word.

  136. John 1.14 would tell us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  137. Right?

  138. Literally God with us.

  139. Jesus lowered himself to be with us.

  140. And so there's many other titles that we see that are given to Jesus.

  141. But I'm just going to kind of focus on a few parts of Jesus here.

  142. So one thing about his humanity, being the Son of Man.

  143. That's the point that I wanted to get to there.

  144. The Son of Man, it's really kind of a weird statement, right?

  145. When you hear Son of Man, you probably just, you might, your first inclination is just think,

  146. yeah, he's the Son of Mankind, right?

  147. Like he's born to Mankind.

  148. Well, Son of Man means many things regarding Jesus.

  149. It means, one, he did have human nature, hardships in the world.

  150. He experienced physical limitations.

  151. This is part of that humanity point right there.

  152. He experienced physical limitations, emotions, temptations.

  153. Jesus became hungry.

  154. Jesus was betrayed.

  155. He has felt these pains.

  156. And his humanity, also, he is a perfect representation of what it means to be human.

  157. But then we also see another part about Jesus as a Son of Man.

  158. Mankind is subject to humility.

  159. Anybody ever been humbled up in here?

  160. That's what I'm talking about, okay?

  161. See, they're willing to admit it.

  162. I've been humbled many a times.

  163. Sometimes by my wife.

  164. But I've been humbled, okay?

  165. The Son of Man, and if you would, really quick with me, in Isaiah, turn to Isaiah 53.

  166. You can see this Son of Man that would become this Messiah, that would be this Messiah.

  167. He was subjugated to such great humility.

  168. It says this in Isaiah 53, verse 3.

    Isaiah 53:3

  169. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

  170. And as one from whom men hid their faces, he was despised and we esteemed him not.

  171. Verse 7 says,

  172. He was oppressed.

  173. He was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.

  174. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,

  175. so he opened not his mouth.

  176. By oppression and judgment he was taken away.

  177. And as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of living,

  178. stricken for the transgression of my people,

  179. and they made his grave with the wicked, with a rich man in his death,

  180. although he had done no violence.

  181. This Jesus was the Son of Man,

  182. was brought so low, so low.

  183. Humbled to such great depths,

  184. so as to be one who bore the griefs and the sicknesses and the trespasses of fellow man.

  185. Can you imagine the quote-unquote shame that would have been on Jesus?

  186. Like, think of what you're shameful of in your life.

  187. What sins have beset you, have sat on you for so long.

  188. They're still in you right now.

  189. Think about the fact that Jesus wore those sins for you.

  190. What things you are ashamed to talk about.

  191. What things you won't ever say to anybody.

  192. The Son of Man bore those sins.

  193. How low was our Redeemer brought?

  194. As low as we go.

  195. As low as we go.

  196. But then there's also this other part about the Son of Man.

  197. There are many sons of man.

  198. I'm a son of a man.

  199. But only one son of man.

  200. One singular son of man is Jesus.

  201. He is the supreme and ultimate example of what mankind was intended to be.

  202. He is the true and better Adam.

  203. He is holy as his Father is holy.

  204. He has kept all the commandments of God.

  205. He is totally obedient and loves the Father fully.

  206. We can't love God fully like that.

  207. We can't.

  208. Because if we did, we'd always be obedient all the time.

  209. I'm not obedient all the time.

  210. I know that.

  211. He is what man—Jesus is what man should have been.

  212. He is not the fulfillment only of the law, but also of mankind.

  213. He is where God's Word finds its fullest fulfillment.

  214. Only a perfect man could do such a thing as that.

  215. This true and better Adam.

  216. Now, as he is the Son of Man, he is fully flesh here, or in this moment right there.

  217. There's also another aspect of Jesus that we know of, right?

  218. So he is—he has his full humanity.

  219. He has his humility that he has gone through.

  220. But he has his deity.

  221. He is also Son of God.

  222. And it seems crazy.

  223. How do you pull us from this little text right here?

  224. This is just supposed to be about becoming Messiah, right?

  225. That's exactly where you pull us from.

  226. So the Son was born to us, fully man.

  227. The next part is a Son of God.

  228. A man given, a child given to us.

  229. See, the context or the kind of context of the word born is that he had to come into the world naturally.

  230. But John MacArthur would tell us this.

  231. If you know John MacArthur, what a wonderful person to study from.

  232. Wonderful person.

  233. I fully suggest you look into some of his stuff because he helped me a lot in this.

  234. But when we look at the word given, it points us not to the incarnation or the physical coming of Christ in flesh.

  235. It points us actually to the eternal and infinite nature of Christ's godhood.

  236. For one to be given, one must first already be.

  237. Right?

  238. Because before you're born, you're not pre-born.

  239. You're born.

  240. But to be given, you have to already exist.

  241. So Christ is the pre-existent Son given for mankind.

  242. Now this title, Son of God, does not necessarily mean God's Son as in his child.

  243. Like you have your children or they have their children.

  244. But rather, it actually kind of means something a little bit different.

  245. And I got this from a website called gotquestions.org.

  246. That sounds really, really sketchy.

  247. I know.

  248. But Got Questions is actually the guys who run it.

  249. They're awesome.

  250. They're theologically very, very rich.

  251. They have a strong orthodoxy.

  252. I'd suggest you look into them too if you're interested in this stuff.

  253. But they said this about Jesus' godhood.

  254. Jesus is God's Son in that he was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit.

  255. Luke 1.35 declares,

  256. The angel answered,

  257. The Holy Spirit will come upon you,

  258. and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

  259. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

  260. So to be the Son of God is to be of the same nature as God.

  261. The Son of God is of God.

  262. Now, the importance of this knowledge reminds us that while Jesus was made like us in flesh,

  263. he came and he was physically flesh like us,

  264. he was also without sin.

  265. Right?

  266. He is totally God.

  267. Jesus is the exact imprint of God.

  268. It is imperative that the Son born to us was also the Son given for us.

  269. Because a Savior, the only Savior we can have is a Savior that is a human and is God.

  270. One who has walked through the life and kept the commands of God,

  271. but was able to also satisfy God's wrath on our behalf.

  272. I know the thing that's kind of crazy about this as I was preparing this sermon,

  273. this doesn't feel like a Christmas sermon really, does it?

  274. It doesn't feel like the, oh, we're going to talk about it.

  275. For me, this seems like a Christmas sermon.

  276. But the truth is, I think a lot of times we get caught up in the tradition of things.

  277. We follow along with what Christmas is supposed to feel like.

  278. But listen, Joy's heard me talk about this a lot of times in the office.

  279. There she is. Joy knows about this.

  280. I've said this a lot of times in the office.

  281. Silent night wasn't very silent.

  282. Can you imagine a bunch of animals around you?

  283. Animals aren't quiet, are they?

  284. Are animals really quiet?

  285. No, see, I got, Chris is back there saying, no, they're not.

  286. Animals are not quiet.

  287. It's a stinky place in a barn.

  288. Let's get our minds away from what Christmas sermons are supposed to be.

  289. But let's look and see what Christmas entails.

  290. The Son of God must be also a Son of Man.

  291. And the Son of Man is more than able to bear the weight of our sins.

  292. That's the beauty of Christmas.

  293. Is that Christ came humbly into the world, lived humbly throughout the world,

  294. went to the cross humbly, died humbly,

  295. but he was full of God.

  296. He was fully God.

  297. Man, I, I, listen, I'm not a very humble guy.

  298. Humble brag, right? There you go.

  299. I'm not a very humble guy.

  300. But no, I'm not super humble.

  301. I could not handle what Jesus went through.

  302. All I know is that when my, when my, when my child,

  303. my little sweet two-year-old boy, John Luke,

  304. when he accidentally smacks me in the face with his hands

  305. because he's playing with his toys too much

  306. and he smacks me in the face, I get mad.

  307. But this Jesus was silent before his shearer.

  308. It was like a sheep silent before his shearers.

  309. Did not say anything.

  310. This Jesus was so focused on his father's purpose.

  311. And that's what Christmas reminds, reminds us of.

  312. So we were here for to look to Jesus and remember who he is,

  313. what he's done.

  314. Why is it important?

  315. Son of Man can bear our weight of our sins.

  316. It means that he can bear the weight of the government upon his shoulders.

  317. And so to kind of be a little more lighthearted,

  318. whether you are a seasoned saint,

  319. whether you are a brand new believer,

  320. whether you are a questioning skeptic

  321. who has no affiliation with the church

  322. or doesn't, is just here because someone said,

  323. come along with me, you'll get free food after this.

  324. Whatever camp you're in, let me tell you,

  325. I know one thing we can all agree on is that

  326. you can't trust a politician further than you could throw their Porsche or Lamborghini.

  327. You can't, right?

  328. You also can't last long in politics if you tell the truth.

  329. It's the truth, right?

  330. That's the truth, right?

  331. And between the lobbyists,

  332. between the partisan or bipartisan or tripartisan or quadripartisan,

  333. whatever partisan we're at now,

  334. there's just so much confusion and unrest in the government.

  335. There's so much confusion and unrest,

  336. not just in our nation, but in the world.

  337. There's confusion and unrest, not in the national,

  338. but in the state and the local governments.

  339. There's so much just confusion.

  340. And then what happens when the government tries to get into moral issues?

  341. That's even more dangerous because now we're being told,

  342. I mean, here's the reality of this.

  343. Every election we are faced with choosing between a rock and a hard place.

  344. We are.

  345. That's just the reality of things.

  346. Don't care which way you swing with that one.

  347. It's always a rock and a hard place for everybody.

  348. As Christians, it seems like we can't win these days.

  349. Right?

  350. I mean, you might be voting for the Republican who's championing pro-life,

  351. the pro-life movement,

  352. but will not strike into law a statement saying that there will be no,

  353. that you will go to jail for premarital and extramarital sex.

  354. Or you're going to have a Democrat who's over here voting for

  355. or championing any number of things.

  356. It could be saying we're championing better health insurance and more medical,

  357. but they're also championing us damaging our children.

  358. You're never going to get a perfect candidate.

  359. We're always in a rock and a hard place with that.

  360. But thankfully, someday,

  361. there will come a day when the government will not rest in the hands of men.

  362. Amen?

  363. Amen.

  364. The government will solely and squarely land on the shoulders of the King of Kings.

  365. There will be no power greater than the rule of Jesus in the land.

  366. And John MacArthur says this about the son born and given to us.

  367. He says,

  368. The government will rest on his shoulders.

  369. And that looks beyond the first Christmas

  370. to a time still in the prophetic future

  371. when Christ shall reign over a literal, earthly, geopolitical kingdom.

  372. All the governments of the world will be under him.

  373. In that day,

  374. the government of the whole world will rest on his shoulders.

  375. And he will reign as sovereign over a worldwide kingdom of righteousness and peace.

  376. But in the meantime,

  377. his government operates in secret.

  378. His kingdom and sovereign rule are manifest within those

  379. who trust in him and are called his people.

  380. So right now,

  381. we are God's kingdom on the earth.

  382. We are seeking to push the kingdom out to all corners of the world

  383. because we want to bring that same rule and reign of Christ

  384. in the hearts of many.

  385. We want all to know Jesus

  386. and to come and know his peace,

  387. his rest,

  388. have true living hope in Christ.

  389. On that day when Christ is ruler over the earth physically here,

  390. there will be no hunger,

  391. no famine,

  392. no thirst,

  393. no physical need not met.

  394. There will be no hardship or unrest due to not agreeing with the king.

  395. For our king will rule justly and mercifully.

  396. And then,

  397. all who are in that kingdom

  398. will be of one mind.

  399. That is the mind of Christ.

  400. There will finally be unity,

  401. not only in the world,

  402. but in the church.

  403. There's a lot of times that

  404. I have,

  405. my wife can attest to this.

  406. She was a pastor's kid.

  407. She's seen a lot of hardships in churches.

  408. I've seen a lot of hardships in some churches.

  409. And there are times when

  410. from the most pettiest of fights,

  411. talking about,

  412. oh, well,

  413. that square carpet over there

  414. is not the same as that one

  415. because you used it from a different place

  416. from 1972.

  417. And there's also,

  418. there's also the disagreements of

  419. whatever else it may be.

  420. I don't like that Sunday school curriculum.

  421. I don't like this.

  422. I don't like that.

  423. Imagine a day

  424. when Christ the King comes

  425. and rules and reigns

  426. not only in our hearts,

  427. but physically before us.

  428. And we have no more issues like that.

  429. We can look to Christ and just say,

  430. look,

  431. the music has all faded.

  432. All has been stripped away.

  433. And now we do simply come.

  434. Greg and I talked the other day

  435. about the song Heart of Worship

  436. and how beautiful that is.

  437. But imagine a day when truly

  438. all the hardships of the world

  439. are stripped away

  440. and we simply come

  441. to the feet of Jesus

  442. to worship and glorify Him.

  443. What a day of rejoicing that will be.

  444. What a day of rejoicing that will be.

  445. I look forward to that.

  446. But until then,

  447. we as the church

  448. are the kingdom here on earth

  449. seeking to grow the kingdom.

  450. But the beautiful thing is

  451. we don't do it alone.

  452. We're not just here

  453. as foot soldiers

  454. and our commander's not just

  455. somewhere back in the tent

  456. not doing nothing.

  457. Our commander is here with us.

  458. He is our wonderful counselor

  459. guiding us.

  460. So that takes me

  461. to this next point.

  462. Hopefully I got that there.

  463. There's the king of kings

  464. and we got wonderful counselor.

  465. I'm going to butcher this word

  466. really bad

  467. because I don't speak Hebrew yet.

  468. But the Hebrew word is,

  469. I believe,

  470. Pele,

  471. I believe.

  472. Correct me if anybody

  473. who speaks

  474. biblical Hebrew.

  475. But the word Pele

  476. is used in describing

  477. something

  478. that is beyond

  479. the capabilities of man.

  480. And that word Pele

  481. is only ever used

  482. in describing

  483. the things God has done.

  484. It's never used

  485. for human accomplishments

  486. or deeds.

  487. So in Isaiah,

  488. Isaiah calls him

  489. the wonderful counselor.

  490. And the word Pele

  491. means wonderful.

  492. So those words together

  493. that's used

  494. in this text here

  495. in Isaiah 9-6,

  496. it's used towards Christ.

  497. This Pele counselor,

  498. this one who is above

  499. and beyond

  500. anything man could do.

  501. In other words,

  502. Jesus is wonderful

  503. in a way

  504. that we cannot comprehend

  505. and it completely

  506. will blow our minds.

  507. Here's some of the many things

  508. that the wonderful counselor

  509. would do

  510. nearly 800 years

  511. after Isaiah

  512. prophesied

  513. the coming Messiah,

  514. after Isaiah's prophecies.

  515. So,

  516. Jesus fulfilled

  517. the wonderfulness

  518. in many ways.

  519. He was on the,

  520. when he was on the earth,

  521. began with his conception,

  522. the womb of the virgin.

  523. Jesus showed

  524. how wonderful he was

  525. and his powers to heal.

  526. His amazing teachings,

  527. his perfect life he lived,

  528. his resurrection

  529. from the dead,

  530. taught many wonderful things.

  531. that are totally

  532. counterintuitive

  533. to the human mind.

  534. Like he said,

  535. blessed are those

  536. who mourn.

  537. Doesn't feel very blessed

  538. to mourn things.

  539. Rejoice and be glad

  540. in persecution.

  541. I don't know about you,

  542. but I've never been,

  543. not always been super happy

  544. about being persecuted

  545. and talked bad about.

  546. Love your enemies

  547. and do good to those

  548. who hate you.

  549. Now, that's the hardest one.

  550. That's the hardest one.

  551. I don't know about you,

  552. but man,

  553. sometimes I swear,

  554. my son starts

  555. saying mean things to me,

  556. he called me big guy

  557. one time.

  558. Boy, I tell you,

  559. that hurt my heart

  560. because I'm a big guy,

  561. you know,

  562. and so my son,

  563. I know where he comes up

  564. and he says,

  565. hey, big guy.

  566. Oh boy,

  567. I felt persecuted

  568. right there.

  569. No, I'm just kidding.

  570. No, but Jesus is,

  571. Jesus kind of wonderful

  572. is awe-inspiring

  573. and superior

  574. to any other kind

  575. of wonderful things.

  576. You may say that,

  577. like the movie,

  578. It's a Wonderful Life,

  579. that's wonderful.

  580. Look at the wonderful,

  581. look at this wonderful,

  582. all these wonderful

  583. decorations we have.

  584. That's beautiful in here.

  585. I love it.

  586. Look at your wonderful faces.

  587. Jesus is superior

  588. to all of your faces,

  589. 100% superior

  590. to all of your faces.

  591. The awe-inspiring nature

  592. of Jesus ought to

  593. at least provoke you

  594. to question,

  595. who is this King of Glory

  596. that these scriptures

  597. talk about?

  598. Who is this King of Glory?

  599. That's the least

  600. it should do.

  601. What it should be doing

  602. for you, though,

  603. is opening your eyes

  604. to the amazing

  605. and unfathomable nature

  606. of our King Jesus

  607. and of our God

  608. and of our God,

  609. our Father.

  610. And we should be filled

  611. with greater and greater

  612. adoration of God,

  613. our Savior.

  614. There's a line

  615. in one of our songs

  616. that says,

  617. Come and behold him,

  618. born the King of Angels.

  619. O come,

  620. let us adore him,

  621. Christ the Lord.

  622. And that's what we want to do.

  623. My hope this morning

  624. is that you walk away

  625. with a greater,

  626. deeper adoration

  627. for Christ the Savior.

  628. You've seen him

  629. as the Son of Man.

  630. You've seen him

  631. as the Son of God,

  632. his humanity,

  633. his humility,

  634. his deity.

  635. You've seen him

  636. as this perfect representation

  637. of God on earth for us

  638. that we may see how to walk.

  639. You've seen that he someday

  640. will have his kingdom

  641. here on earth

  642. and we look forward to that

  643. when there's no more unrest

  644. and we look forward to it

  645. not just in a way like,

  646. Oh, I can't wait

  647. until it comes here.

  648. We look forward to it

  649. in a way in which

  650. we want to live like it now.

  651. Don't live

  652. as if the kingdom's coming.

  653. Live as if it were here now

  654. because it's in you

  655. if you're a believer.

  656. If you were a believer

  657. this morning,

  658. you had the kingdom of God

  659. in you.

  660. Live as though

  661. this is the kingdom now.

  662. So when we sing these songs

  663. at this time of the year,

  664. we have a lot of carols

  665. and things we sing.

  666. Don't let those things

  667. be empty words,

  668. empty and vain

  669. melodies from memory.

  670. Don't let them be that.

  671. Let them be genuine.

  672. We sang Joy to the World

  673. this morning

  674. and you could sing that song

  675. in any time of the year.

  676. Any time of the year.

  677. You could sing it at Easter.

  678. You could sing it on Black Friday.

  679. You could sing it

  680. any time of the year.

  681. Joy to the world

  682. the Lord has come.

  683. Let earth receive her king

  684. and let every heart

  685. prepare for him room.

  686. Man, that's what we desire.

  687. We desire that every heart

  688. will prepare for him room

  689. for him to come in

  690. and make them whole

  691. as he's done for us

  692. who are in the Lord.

  693. So he's wonderful,

  694. superior above all things,

  695. but he's also a counselor.

  696. Anybody in high school

  697. ever go to their counselor

  698. because they were good kids

  699. to bad kids?

  700. Y'all scared to admit that?

  701. Yeah?

  702. No.

  703. I never,

  704. I went to the counselor one time

  705. because I told my counselor

  706. I needed to know about scholarships

  707. and it was too hard for me

  708. so I didn't do anything

  709. about scholarships.

  710. But in the Bible

  711. we see the word counselor.

  712. A counselor is portrayed

  713. as a wise king.

  714. So it's not just a common term

  715. just given to anybody.

  716. It's a term given to people

  717. who were like wise kings

  718. or very, very wise consultants

  719. and advisors.

  720. In the Old Testament,

  721. a good example would have been

  722. Solomon.

  723. He was a wise counselor

  724. giving guidance

  725. and wise judgment

  726. for his people.

  727. And as it pertains

  728. to the Lord,

  729. Isaiah writes

  730. in Isaiah 28, 29,

  731. this also comes

  732. from the Lord of hosts.

  733. He is wonderful in counsel

  734. and excellent in wisdom.

  735. Jesus, our Lord,

  736. gives very, very wise counsel.

  737. In fact,

  738. it's so wise

  739. that we base

  740. our entire living

  741. off of it.

  742. In 1 Peter 2, 21,

  743. it says this,

  744. it says,

  745. For to this you have been called

  746. because Christ also

  747. suffered for you,

  748. leaving you an example

  749. so that you might follow

  750. in his steps.

  751. And we need guidance

  752. in our lives.

  753. We need guidance

  754. and we need leading

  755. or else we don't know

  756. what to do with our lives

  757. and how to do things in life.

  758. Those of you

  759. who are believers,

  760. before you came to Christ,

  761. life was,

  762. life may have been

  763. really easy for you,

  764. I don't know.

  765. But you're always wondering,

  766. what's next?

  767. How do I do this?

  768. Where do I get my ethics?

  769. I remember when I was younger,

  770. my dad,

  771. I was a very sensitive kid.

  772. Very sensitive kid.

  773. That was a nice way to say

  774. I cried a lot.

  775. But no,

  776. I was a very sensitive kid

  777. and my dad,

  778. I remember one day

  779. I was just broken over something.

  780. I must have failed a class

  781. or something like that

  782. in high school.

  783. And I was hiding in my room

  784. and closed the door

  785. and I was just weeping,

  786. just crying so hard.

  787. And so my dad came in

  788. and because of my failing

  789. of a class,

  790. I said,

  791. I'm never going to be a man.

  792. I'll never be a fully-fledged,

  793. strong man like my dad is.

  794. Because I'm not,

  795. I'm never going to be a man.

  796. My dad came in

  797. and told me

  798. what it meant to be a man.

  799. You know,

  800. strong,

  801. loving,

  802. kind person.

  803. And he said all great things.

  804. But it was devoid

  805. of Christ.

  806. It was devoid

  807. of Christ.

  808. And so

  809. the,

  810. the reason why

  811. I bring that up

  812. is my father

  813. is a great counselor.

  814. My father gives me

  815. a lot of great counsel.

  816. My father would not give me

  817. necessarily the counsel

  818. I needed to hear.

  819. What does it mean

  820. to be a man of the scriptures?

  821. A man of God?

  822. But when we turn our lives

  823. to Christ

  824. and we do what

  825. 1 Peter 2,

  826. 1 Peter 2.21 tells us,

  827. he's left us an example.

  828. He shows us how to live.

  829. We walk in that living.

  830. And

  831. he can advise his people

  832. very thoroughly

  833. because he knows our hearts

  834. and he knows

  835. everything we need to know.

  836. And he's very qualified

  837. for this too

  838. because he's walked

  839. the same life we have.

  840. Remember,

  841. he's been betrayed,

  842. hungry,

  843. thirsty.

  844. Maybe he's had

  845. some sort of

  846. questions about

  847. people

  848. because Jesus

  849. would sometimes

  850. limit his

  851. divinity

  852. so we could see

  853. that full humanity.

  854. In Christ

  855. is hidden

  856. all the treasures

  857. of wisdom and knowledge.

  858. That's from Colossians 2,

  859. 3.

  860. And that includes

  861. all the knowledge

  862. of human nature.

  863. Jesus always knows

  864. what we're going through.

  865. He always knows

  866. the right course of action.

  867. He's our wonderful counselor.

  868. Beyond what we could

  869. ever imagine,

  870. wiser than we could

  871. ever be,

  872. we can trust him

  873. to hear us

  874. and lead us

  875. in the right way.

  876. We can turn to Jesus

  877. and hear him say

  878. to us in the scriptures

  879. so many times,

  880. do not be afraid.

  881. He always has

  882. our best interests

  883. at heart.

  884. Always has them.

  885. And even though

  886. we are told

  887. not to be afraid,

  888. when we are afraid,

  889. when we do

  890. struggle in our hearts

  891. to be confident

  892. in Christ,

  893. we can surely

  894. come to him

  895. with our prayers,

  896. our petitions,

  897. and he will meet us

  898. where we are.

  899. Because he's been there.

  900. He knows all things

  901. we've faced.

  902. And lastly,

  903. the most important part,

  904. I think,

  905. for the believer

  906. is he is our living hope.

  907. Now,

  908. I asked Greg

  909. if he would sing

  910. that song

  911. at the very end

  912. because it's very,

  913. very poignant

  914. for this moment.

  915. He is our living hope.

  916. hope.

  917. And when the world

  918. looks at hope,

  919. they say,

  920. you know,

  921. I hope the next iPhone

  922. doesn't have,

  923. or I hope the next iPhone

  924. has buttons on it

  925. because I sure wish

  926. the next iPhone

  927. would have buttons on it.

  928. I'm tired of just

  929. the full-on screen

  930. with no buttons.

  931. I miss the days

  932. of flip phones.

  933. The world may also say,

  934. I hope someday

  935. I find a wife.

  936. I hope someday

  937. I find a husband.

  938. I hope someday

  939. my husband actually

  940. takes the trash out

  941. without me saying anything.

  942. You know,

  943. the world says hope

  944. in such a meaningless way

  945. and their hope

  946. is so empty.

  947. There's no depth

  948. to the hope

  949. of the world.

  950. And so,

  951. when as Christians

  952. we look at this,

  953. we look at it

  954. in a much different way.

  955. But I'm getting ahead

  956. of myself.

  957. I want to kind of

  958. read a little thing

  959. I wrote for you.

  960. Christmas time

  961. is a time of joy,

  962. a time of peace.

  963. And there may be

  964. very nostalgic feelings

  965. for some of us.

  966. Though it's usually

  967. really cold

  968. this time of the year,

  969. I, personally,

  970. am always filled

  971. with warm feelings.

  972. For most people,

  973. Christmas time

  974. is a feel-good season.

  975. But all too often

  976. we forget

  977. those who have

  978. suffered great pains

  979. and heartaches

  980. at this time of the year.

  981. It's easy

  982. to forget that.

  983. And these times

  984. of the year,

  985. it's either bittersweet

  986. or entirely bitter

  987. for many people

  988. across the nation,

  989. even in our congregation today.

  990. To know a few hardships,

  991. you may have faced

  992. loss of a loved one,

  993. destruction of a family

  994. entirely,

  995. the ruining of friendships

  996. and relationships,

  997. financial struggles.

  998. The list goes on.

  999. We all are familiar

  1000. with the pains

  1001. in some way.

  1002. But for some reason,

  1003. it strikes us harder

1004. at this time of the year.

  1005. Because we're supposed

  1006. to be joyful.

  1007. Right?

  1008. Always rejoicing.

1009. Jesus is our wonderful counselor.

  1010. You can trust him

  1011. to hear us,

1012. lead us in the right way.

  1013. But,

  1014. the hardship

  1015. that we oftentimes face

  1016. in this,

  1017. we feel alone sometimes.

  1018. Christmas time

  1019. can feel really,

  1020. really tight

  1021. for your family

  1022. or can feel really,

  1023. really separating

  1024. from your family.

  1025. But here's the thing.

  1026. The son of man

  1027. has been humiliated

  1028. in front of his

  1029. dearest friends,

  1030. his mother,

  1031. his enemies,

  1032. his own people.

  1033. The son of God

  1034. has shown us

  1035. the greatest act

  1036. of grace

  1037. towards mankind

  1038. in his death

  1039. and resurrection.

1040. And it is only he

  1041. who could do

  1042. such a thing.

  1043. This king of kings,

  1044. he came to us

  1045. in a lowly fashion

  1046. to make much

  1047. of God the Father.

1048. He came as a child,

  1049. an infant.

  1050. But one day,

  1051. his kingdom shall reign

  1052. on the earth

1053. and not just in the hearts

1054. and souls of his people.

  1055. This kingdom will be,

1056. this kingdom will be full

  1057. of peace

  1058. and joy unimaginable.

  1059. The wonderful counselor

  1060. is able to save

  1061. to the utmost

  1062. and fully

  1063. those who are

  1064. brokenhearted,

  1065. crushed in spirit,

  1066. physically hurting.

  1067. He's able to lead

  1068. his people on

  1069. in perfect

  1070. and wise counsel.

  1071. And here's the thing,

  1072. his works and deeds

  1073. cannot be done

  1074. by man.

  1075. His counsel

  1076. is nothing like

  1077. the fleeting

  1078. and faulty counsel

  1079. of the world.

  1080. No matter how

  1081. flowery and helpful

  1082. it may sound,

  1083. there's no counsel

  1084. like the Lord's.

  1085. So here's the beauty

  1086. of all this.

  1087. This is kind of

  1088. the landing point.

  1089. If you,

1090. if any of my youth

  1091. are here,

  1092. you guys know

  1093. I'm going to say,

  1094. I'm going to land

  1095. the plane.

  1096. I always say that.

  1097. I'm going to land

  1098. the plane here though.

  1099. Jesus was born

1100. to suffer on our behalf.

  1101. He was given

  1102. as a ransom

1103. for those who would believe.

  1104. He will one day

  1105. reign here

  1106. and we shall live

  1107. with Him.

  1108. We do not suffer

  1109. in this life

  1110. in vain

  1111. because Jesus was born,

  1112. lived,

  1113. died,

  1114. and rose again

  1115. from the grave.

  1116. And Christmas,

  1117. though it may have

  1118. many meanings

  1119. to many of us

  1120. here on earth,

1121. it only has one meaning

  1122. in heaven

  1123. and that is one

  1124. of redemption

  1125. and of true

  1126. living hope.

  1127. The last parting word

  1128. is this.

1129. I hope that Jesus brings

  1130. it's not fleeting.

  1131. It's not just this

  1132. fly by night,

  1133. fill your heart

  1134. happiness feeling.

1135. If you are a believer

  1136. in this room,

  1137. you will see Jesus.

  1138. That's for certain.

  1139. You may not see

  1140. physical healing.

  1141. You may not see

  1142. your billfold

  1143. fill up

  1144. really full.

  1145. And you may never

  1146. experience the joy

  1147. you had when you

  1148. were a kid again.

1149. But I can promise you

  1150. that you will see

  1151. joy everlasting

  1152. in God's kingdom

  1153. with Him.

  1154. But,

  1155. there's the

  1156. converse side of it.

  1157. There's the opposite side.

  1158. There's a side that

1159. hurts us to talk about.

  1160. If you are not

  1161. a believer

  1162. in this room,

1163. if you are a skeptic,

  1164. if you are

  1165. a casual Christian,

  1166. which I might

  1167. title you

  1168. Christian Atheist then,

  1169. there's a true danger

  1170. that lies before you.

  1171. There's a danger

  1172. of hell

  1173. and damnation

  1174. and separation

  1175. from an eternal God.

  1176. Eternal damnation,

  1177. I might add too.

1178. It's not one of those

1179. things where you can just,

1180. oh, I did my time,

  1181. Lord, I got out.

1182. There's no getting out of it.

  1183. There ain't no purgatory.

1184. Go try to read those books

  1185. from other things,

  1186. there ain't no purgatory.

  1187. Promise you that.

1188. If you do not trust

  1189. in the hope

  1190. of eternity

  1191. that's Christ,

  1192. you have no hope.

  1193. That means Christmas

  1194. is merely a circumstantial,

  1195. happy,

1196. or sad time of your life.

  1197. And that means

  1198. you will die

  1199. without hope.

  1200. Die in your sins

  1201. without hope.

  1202. So as Jesus says

  1203. to his people

  1204. in front of him,

  1205. he says,

  1206. while you still

  1207. have the light,

  1208. while you're under

  1209. the grace of God

  1210. right now,

  1211. turn to him.

  1212. Today is a day

  1213. of salvation.

  1214. Listen,

  1215. I've told my students

  1216. this a couple times,

  1217. I'm 27,

  1218. 28,

  1219. wow, gosh,

  1220. I'm getting old.

  1221. I know,

  1222. 28's not old,

  1223. I know.

  1224. But I'm 28,

1225. I did not come to Christ

  1226. until I was 21 years old.

  1227. That means for

  1228. seven years

  1229. I've been a believer,

  1230. but 21

  1231. long years,

  1232. God patiently

  1233. suffered through my sin.

  1234. God waited

1235. for me in my sin.

  1236. God,

1237. blessed me in my sin.

  1238. Not blessing my sin,

1239. but he still gave me life.

  1240. He did not immediately

1241. let me die in my sin.

  1242. God was kind

  1243. and gracious to me

  1244. for 21 long years.

  1245. Imagine if somebody

  1246. was constantly

  1247. in your ear,

  1248. in your face,

  1249. transgressing against you

  1250. for 21 long years.

  1251. Yo,

  1252. I'd be like,

  1253. I'm tapping out,

  1254. I'm done.

  1255. I'm walking away.

  1256. But God,

  1257. because he is great,

  1258. gracious,

  1259. right?

  1260. Romans 5,

  1261. 8's my favorite verses.

  1262. It's,

  1263. it's that,

1264. and yet while we were

  1265. still sinners,

  1266. Christ died for us.

1267. So if we did not have

  1268. this incarnation of Christ,

  1269. the birth of Christ

  1270. on Christmas,

  1271. we would not have

  1272. the death of Christ.

  1273. That brings us hope.

  1274. He's our wonderful counselor.

  1275. Father,

  1276. in your living,

  1277. you have Christ

  1278. to turn to.

  1279. Turn to him.

  1280. He's not,

  1281. he's not like a,

  1282. like your,

1283. your father or your friends

  1284. who would say,

  1285. you know,

  1286. oh,

  1287. you,

  1288. you,

  1289. you messed up.

1290. I'm not talking to you anymore.

  1291. When you mess up,

  1292. God says,

  1293. come.

1294. I want to fix it.

1295. Come to him with that.

  1296. If you're not a believer

  1297. this morning,

  1298. I,

  1299. I ask you,

  1300. you know,

  1301. I'll,

  1302. I'll be around here.

1303. I'll be back there too

  1304. after,

  1305. after the service.

  1306. Please,

  1307. feel free to come

  1308. talk with me

  1309. about

  1310. knowing Christ

  1311. as your Savior

  1312. this Christmas season.

  1313. What a sweet time

  1314. it would be

1315. to come and know Christ

  1316. in Christmas.

  1317. Church,

  1318. thank you so much

  1319. for this morning.

  1320. Thank you so much

  1321. for listening

  1322. through God's word.

  1323. I'll take some time

  1324. to pray for us

  1325. and then I'll ask,

  1326. Greg,

  1327. if you'll come back.

  1328. Do you have,

1329. do you have music for us?

  1330. Okay.

  1331. I'll ask Greg

  1332. to come back up

1333. and lead us in song again.

1334. Let me go and take some time

1335. to pray for us this morning.

  1336. Let us pray.

  1337. Father,

  1338. thank you so much

  1339. for this morning.

  1340. I just pray

  1341. that you would,

  1342. allow your word

  1343. to do as,

  1344. as it always does.

  1345. It never returns void.

  1346. It always accomplishes

1347. what it sets out to do.

  1348. So Lord,

  1349. this morning,

  1350. whatever the hearts

  1351. of these people

  1352. need to hear,

  1353. whatever the hands

  1354. and the feet

  1355. of these people

  1356. need to do,

  1357. God,

  1358. guide us.

1359. You are a wonderful counselor.

  1360. You are the one

1361. who is above all else.

  1362. You're the one

  1363. who leads us

  1364. in ways of righteousness.

  1365. So God,

  1366. I pray,

  1367. turn our hearts

1368. and our eyes to you now.

  1369. It's in Jesus' name I pray.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Amen.

  1372. Amen.
