  1. All right, well, would you take the Word of God with me and go to Isaiah chapter 9?

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  2. We are going to continue on in our series called His Name Will Be, an Advent series

  3. from Isaiah 9-6.

  4. By way of review, a couple of weeks ago, when Jared preached, he told us that Jesus is our

  5. wonderful counselor.

  6. And of course, we read that in the scriptures, and the takeaway is that Jesus is our living

  7. hope because in our living, we can turn to our wonderful counselor.

  8. And then last Sunday, we talked about how Jesus is our mighty God.

  9. And the takeaway is the question, who is the hero of your stories?

  10. We see that those words, mighty God, literally mean hero.

  11. Jesus is called our hero, so is He the hero of our story, or are we saving that for ourselves?

  12. And then today, we're going to be looking at the next item.

  13. You've heard about it some in our music.

  14. You've heard about it in our children's time with Sarah.

  15. And that is that Jesus is the everlasting Father, the everlasting Father.

  16. I know you've been up and down a good bit.

  17. I'm going to let you keep your seats today.

  18. But we're going to read together Isaiah chapter 9 and verse 6.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  19. Let's look at it together, Isaiah 9 and verse 6.

  20. I've got it on the screens if you don't have it in front of you.

  21. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.

  22. The government will rest on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  23. Everlasting Father is the subject matter for today's message.

  24. And I pray that you come away having had an encounter with the Father, the Father himself.

  25. Now, that's an interesting thought.

  26. We're talking about Jesus, aren't we?

  27. This whole passage is called a Christological passage.

  28. That means it has to do with the Christ, Jesus himself.

  29. So if we're talking about Jesus, who is called the what of God?

  30. Jesus is the blank of God.

  31. What is he?

  32. Son.

  33. There we go.

  34. Somebody said lamb, and that's true.

  35. He is also called the Lamb of God.

  36. But right now we're looking at son.

  37. So if the son of God is Jesus, then how is he called the Everlasting Father?

  38. Make it make sense, right?

  39. Well, let's dive into it today.

  40. Let's look at it and see what we learn from the scriptures.

  41. Let's back up a little bit to chapter 9 and verse 3.

  42. Chapter 9 and verse 3.

  43. We read here,

  44. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy.

  45. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoiced at harvest time,

  46. and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.

  47. Do you understand what it's talking about there?

  48. It says,

  49. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice.

  50. Well, that is a prophecy.

  51. That is a foretelling of how God would enlarge his people.

  52. What did he mean by that?

  53. You see, when Isaiah wrote down this prophecy,

  54. and it was read throughout synagogues for many generations of Israelites,

  55. the Hebrew people would latch on to that,

  56. and they would think,

  57. Man, our kingdom is going to be the world's greatest someday.

  58. The people of Israel, long the oppressed,

  59. maybe some of them interpreted that as,

  60. We're going to be in charge.

  61. We're going to be maybe the oppressors.

  62. We're going to be the ones calling the shots,

  63. ruling the world for once.

  64. Now, I don't know if they all thought that.

  65. You can see that some of them could have.

  66. But the actual unfolding of how God enlarged his people,

  67. his nation of Israel,

  68. was by bringing in the Gentiles,

  69. bringing in the non-Jews.

  70. When Jesus died on the cross,

  71. and then we see later in the book of Ephesians,

  72. there's now no longer Jew or Gentile,

  73. no longer Jew or Greek,

  74. no longer male or female.

  75. We are all one under the blood of Christ.

  76. Now, this nation has been enlarged.

  77. So the reality of it is,

  78. when he said that he would enlarge the nation of Israel

  79. and its people would rejoice,

  80. Jesus enlarged the nation of Israel

  81. by opening it up,

  82. opening up God's kingdom.

  83. Now God's people are all of us.

  84. And you and I are direct beneficiaries of that.

  85. I praise God that he enlarged his people.

  86. Warren Wiersbe, one of my favorite Bible teachers,

  87. said it this way,

  88. instead of protecting a small remnant of just the Jews,

  89. God would enlarge the whole nation

  90. by grafting in, the Bible teaches us,

  91. bringing in those who were before on the outside.

  92. He did that through his son, Jesus Christ,

  93. and his sacrifice.

  94. What an incredible thought.

  95. Now, we read about Jesus the king here.

  96. We read about it last Sunday.

  97. We talked about how he was the mighty king

  98. or the mighty hero.

  99. Well, contrast this king

  100. with the kings of Judah at the time.

  101. The king, the series of kings that Judah had had,

  102. had been poorly advised by their counselor.

  103. But Jesus is called the wonderful counselor.

  104. So wise.

  105. They had been unsuccessful in battle,

  106. but Jesus is now the mighty hero God.

  107. Their, Judah's kings,

  108. had largely treated their people poorly

  109. during their short reigns,

  110. but Jesus is called the everlasting father to his people.

  111. And then they, Judah's kings,

  112. had never been able to achieve peace,

  113. lasting peace for their people.

  114. But Jesus is called what?

  115. The prince of peace.

  116. So we've got a stark contrast here

  117. between who Judah is used to,

  118. who God's people are used to in their leadership,

  119. and then this coming king,

  120. this coming Jesus,

  121. who is called the everlasting father.

  122. So let's dive into Jesus,

  123. the everlasting father.

  124. Truth number one,

  125. what does a father do?

  126. A father protects and provides.

  127. Provides and protects.

  128. This father king would provide for

  129. and protect his people during his reign.

  130. And guess what?

  131. His reign would never end.

  132. It was eternal.

  133. It was everlasting.

  134. And Jesus' reign is still going on

  135. and will never end.

  136. Jesus is the king.

  137. He is the father king.

  138. Last Sunday,

  139. we looked at him as the hero slash God.

  140. And now he is the father slash king.

  141. The father provides and protects.

  142. You see,

  143. Old Testament patriarchy,

  144. looked very different.

  145. There's a buzzword out there in culture today,

  146. and it's patriarchy.

  147. But the Old Testament patriarchy

  148. was something established by God,

  149. and it looked very different

  150. than the self-serving patriarchy movement

  151. that we can find in today's culture.

  152. It's not what God set up.

  153. Jesus gave us the picture

  154. of what the ultimate patriarch would be.

  155. Of course,

  156. that word patriarch just means

  157. the male head figure

  158. of a group of people.

  159. And Jesus would be that ultimate patriarch.

  160. The one who protects and provides.

  161. The one full of justice,

  162. self-sacrifice,

  163. guidance,

  164. and unending love.

  165. That is Jesus,

  166. the everlasting father.

  167. That is Jesus,

  168. the patriarch.

  169. Jesus shows us

  170. what a leader should be.

  171. I love that Sarah talked with the children

  172. just a little bit ago

  173. about the male figureheads in their lives.

  174. What are some good things they love about them?

  175. Well,

  176. every one of us,

  177. and I got a couple of shout-outs in there.

  178. The coffee one,

  179. I don't know about,

  180. but

  181. every one of us,

  182. the male figureheads in our lives,

  183. myself included,

  184. as one in my family,

  185. are flawed.

  186. Oftentimes,

  187. we do our best,

  188. we try,

  189. and so often,

  190. we fail

  191. in what we are trying to achieve,

  192. what we're trying to live up to,

  193. this standard of what a father

  194. or a patriarch

  195. should be.

  196. And as I said before,

  197. that word,

  198. like so many other words,

  199. can be misused,

  200. can be bent

  201. and put toward a self-serving purpose,

  202. and that should never be the case

  203. in God's people.

  204. Real patriarchs,

  205. according to what God established

  206. in the Bible,

  207. should always be men of justice,

  208. should always be men of self-sacrifice,

  209. should be men willing

  210. to lend a guiding hand or ear

  211. and always full

  212. of undying love.

  213. That's what Jesus

  214. portrayed himself.

  215. That's who he was

  216. and who he still is today.

  217. So the father provides

  218. and protects.

  219. Let's look in Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  220. It's on the screen

  221. if you don't have time

  222. to turn there,

  223. but he protects his flock

  224. like a shepherd.

  225. He gathers the lambs

  226. in his arms

  227. and carries them

  228. in the fold of his garment.

  229. He gently leads

  230. those that are nursing.

  231. That's what an everlasting father

  232. looks like.

  233. That's what a good father

  234. looks like,

  235. and that's who Jesus is.

  236. Isaiah 64 and verse 8.

  237. Lord,

  238. you are our father.

  239. We are the clay,

  240. and you are our potter.

  241. We are all the work

  242. of your hands.

  243. This is the picture

  244. of Jesus,

  245. the everlasting father.

  246. Psalm 103.

  247. As a father has compassion

  248. on his children,

  249. so the Lord has compassion

  250. on those who fear him.

  251. And we try to have compassion

  252. on our children,

  253. don't we?

  254. We want to be men

  255. of compassion, fathers.

  256. Sometimes we have

  257. a short fuse,

  258. don't we?

  259. Sometimes we feel like

  260. we've got to bring

  261. the hammer down.

  262. And sometimes,

  263. of course,

  264. stern discipline is necessary,

  265. but it should always

  266. still come from

  267. a place of compassion.

  268. That's how God treats us.

  269. The Lord has compassion

  270. on those who fear him.

  271. And then in Matthew,

  272. going to the Gospels,

  273. we see more pictures

  274. of Jesus,

  275. God as the father.

  276. All things have been

  277. entrusted to me

  278. by my father,

  279. Jesus says.

  280. No one knows the son

  281. except the father,

  282. and no one knows

  283. the father,

  284. watch this,

  285. except the son,

  286. and anyone to whom

  287. the son desires

  288. to reveal him.

  289. Do you see how the son

  290. and the father

  291. are inextricably linked?

  292. You can't separate them.

  293. The son and the father

  294. in this picture

  295. of the Trinity

  296. are absolutely inseparable.

  297. And he can reveal

  298. the father

  299. through himself

  300. to us.

  301. Jesus is portrayed

  302. as our everlasting father

  303. because he knows

  304. the father so well.

  305. And then what does he say?

  306. In the very next verses,

  307. he says,

  308. come to me.

  309. I'll show you the father.

  310. All of you who are weary

  311. and burdened,

  312. and I will give you rest.

  313. Take my yoke upon you

  314. and learn from me

  315. because I am lowly

  316. and humble in heart.

  317. Man,

  318. would God give us

  319. fathers

  320. and men

  321. who would be lowly

  322. and humble

  323. in heart,

  324. in spirit.

  325. You will find rest

  326. for your souls.

  327. It should be

  328. that when we run

  329. to our fathers,

  330. we find rest

  331. for our souls.

  332. That's what we find

  333. when we run to Jesus.

  334. That's what we find

  335. when we run to God.

  336. Why?

  337. Because his yoke

  338. is easy

  339. and his burden

  340. is light.

  341. And as a father,

  342. that's my prayer

  343. that God would make me

  344. more of a man

  345. of compassion,

  346. that God would make me

  347. someone

  348. that people can run to

  349. for rest

  350. for their souls.

  351. A little bit later

  352. in the Gospel of Matthew,

  353. we read in chapter 23,

  354. Do not call anyone

  355. on earth your father.

  356. Boy, that's interesting.

  357. Do not call anyone

  358. on earth your father

  359. because you have

  360. one father

  361. who is in heaven.

  362. Now, of course,

  363. we're not going to say

  364. that it's wrong

  365. to children

  366. to call your dads fathers,

  367. but we're recognizing

  368. that we're not allowing

  369. anyone to take

  370. that place

  371. that God has

  372. as our one

  373. true father.

  374. You are not

  375. to be called

  376. instructors either

  377. because you have

  378. one instructor,

  379. the Messiah.

  380. Who was the Messiah?

  381. Quick quiz, everybody.

  382. It's Christmas time.

  383. Who was the Messiah?

  384. Jesus.

  385. That's right.

  386. So we see

  387. that Jesus

  388. and the Father

  389. are inseparable.

  390. And then in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  391. chapter 8,

  392. you did not receive

  393. a spirit of slavery

  394. to fall back into fear.

  395. Instead,

  396. you receive the spirit

  397. of, what's that word?

  398. Adoption.

  399. By whom we cry out,

  400. Abba,

  401. Father.

  402. This is an endearing term,

  403. kind of like daddy.

  404. Dad.

  405. For a father.

  406. So this is the relationship

  407. that we can have.

  408. The Spirit Himself

  409. testifies together

  410. with our spirit

  411. that we are

  412. God's children.

  413. 2 Corinthians chapter 5,

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  414. our last one

  415. in this section here.

  416. Everything is from God

  417. who has reconciled us

  418. to Himself

  419. through Christ

  420. and has given us

  421. the ministry

  422. of reconciliation.

  423. Do you understand

  424. that the Father

  425. provides for us?

  426. Everything we have

  427. is from God.

  428. Now, we don't always

  429. give Him the credit

  430. for it.

  431. Sometimes we like to think

  432. that we earned it ourselves.

  433. Sometimes we like to think

  434. that we've gone out

  435. and done the hard work

  436. and pulled ourselves up

  437. by our bootstraps

  438. and then sometimes

  439. God has to remind us

  440. that we are in the palm

  441. of His hand.

  442. Everything we have

  443. comes from Him.

  444. So, Jesus

  445. is cast

  446. as our everlasting Father.

  447. Now,

  448. let's look for a moment.

  449. at these two concepts here.

  450. We have the Father of Israel

  451. and the Father of us all.

  452. The Father of Israel

  453. and the Father of us all.

  454. Now,

  455. Genesis 49

  456. is where we're going to go

  457. for the Father of Israel.

  458. You don't have to turn there

  459. right now.

  460. If you want to mark it down

  461. and look at it later,

  462. you absolutely can.

  463. But Genesis 49,

    Genesis 49:10

  464. verse 10,

  465. the scepter

  466. will not depart

  467. from Judah.

  468. What are we talking about

  469. when we say

  470. the scepter

  471. will not depart

  472. from Judah?

  473. It's that Jesus

  474. would be seen

  475. as the Father

  476. of Israel.

  477. Why?

  478. Because Jesus

  479. is called

  480. the Lion

  481. of the Tribe

  482. of Judah.

  483. Some of y'all

  484. would know that.

  485. It's okay if you didn't.

  486. But Jesus

  487. is the Father

  488. of Israel.

  489. He comes from

  490. the line of Judah.

  491. He is cast

  492. as the everlasting

  493. Father.

  494. And we'll get to

  495. what that means

  496. in just a moment.

  497. But I want to let you know

  498. that Jesus

  499. is the scepter.

  500. What was the scepter?

  501. What is a scepter?

  502. Something that a

  503. king would hold.

  504. Right?

  505. A scepter

  506. is something that

  507. the reigning

  508. monarch

  509. would hold.

  510. So the scepter,

  511. the royal scepter,

  512. would not depart

  513. from the tribe

  514. of Judah.

  515. That was the prophecy

  516. all the way back

  517. in Genesis 49.

  518. And then we get to

  519. read throughout.

  520. That was smack dab

  521. in the middle

  522. of the story of Joseph

  523. that we just covered

  524. a little bit ago.

  525. And Judah

  526. was one of those

  527. brothers of Joseph

  528. and the one,

  529. the tribe

  530. that God chose

  531. for the line

  532. of Jesus

  533. to produce.

  534. Jesus came

  535. from the line

  536. of Judah

  537. and the scepter

  538. as father

  539. of Israel

  540. or patriarch

  541. of Israel

  542. did not depart

  543. from the tribe

  544. of Judah.

  545. But then he is

  546. not just the father

  547. of Israel.

  548. Remember,

  549. God expanded

  550. his people.

  551. He expanded

  552. his nation.

  553. Now we get

  554. to be

  555. God's children

  556. too.

  557. We get to be

  558. God's people

  559. too.

  560. So he is seen

  561. as the father

  562. of us all.

  563. Ephesians chapter

  564. four teaches us

  565. that there is

  566. one God

  567. and father

  568. of all.

  569. So,

  570. let's look

  571. at what this

  572. word father

  573. means.

  574. Back in Isaiah

  575. chapter nine

  576. and verse six,

  577. we read that

  578. he is the

  579. everlasting

  580. or eternal

  581. father.

  582. What are we

  583. talking about?

  584. I swear we're

  585. not going to do

  586. a language lesson

  587. every time I preach

  588. from now on,

  589. alright?

  590. Because we did

  591. one last Sunday

  592. and I'm just

  593. sharing this

  594. with you again.

  595. Again,

  596. I'm not a

  597. Hebrew scholar

  598. but there are

  599. plenty of them

  600. out there

  601. and I've

  602. learned a lot

  603. from them.

  604. So,

  605. this word

  606. av-iad,

  607. the Hebrew

  608. word av

  609. means father.

  610. What does it

  611. mean?

  612. We think of

  613. father one way

  614. in our culture,

  615. in our society,

  616. but when the

  617. Hebrews would

  618. have read this

  619. word,

  620. they would

  621. have seen

  622. this as the

  623. originator and

  624. source.

  625. So,

  626. father meant

  627. the originator

  628. and source

  629. of a group

  630. of people.

  631. Y'all,

  632. this is wild.

  633. Jesus,

  634. you ready for

  635. this,

  636. is our originator

  637. and source.

  638. You could say

  639. that Jesus

  640. is our founding

  641. father.

  642. Now,

  643. that means

  644. something to

  645. Americans,

  646. doesn't it?

  647. Hashtag

  648. marka.

  649. We love to

  650. think back to

  651. our founding

  652. fathers.

  653. fathers.

  654. We see

  655. God's hand

  656. instrumental

  657. in how this

  658. nation came

  659. to be.

  660. These great

  661. men that he

  662. used to see

  663. our country

  664. founded,

  665. were they

  666. flawed?

  667. Absolutely.

  668. But,

  669. of course,

  670. God used

  671. them mightily

  672. to see this

  673. nation founded

  674. where there

  675. could be

  676. freedom of

  677. religion,

  678. etc.

  679. So,

  680. we love to

  681. look back

  682. and study

  683. the lives

  684. of our

  685. founding fathers,

  686. but listen,

  687. there is a

  688. far,

  689. far greater

  690. founding father

  691. out there.

  692. And lest we

  693. ever get

  694. confused and

  695. think that our

  696. allegiance is

  697. to America

  698. first.

  699. May I

  700. remind you

  701. that our

  702. allegiance is

  703. not of this

  704. world.

  705. It is to a

  706. kingdom that

  707. is not of this

  708. world.

  709. It's to a

  710. kingdom that

  711. is heavenly.

  712. Our

  713. allegiance is

  714. to God

  715. first.

  716. We're

  717. thankful that

  718. he allowed

  719. us to be

  720. born into

  721. this country,

  722. many of us,

  723. there may be

  724. some today who

  725. were not born

  726. in this country,

  727. and we're

  728. thankful that

  729. this country is

  730. here to serve

  731. you as much

  732. as we can

  733. with freedom

  734. of religion and

  735. freedom of

  736. speech,

  737. etc.

  738. But God

  739. has used

  740. America,

  741. to a

  742. point,

  743. but there

  744. will come

  745. a day

  746. when America

  747. ends.

  748. But God's

  749. kingdom is

  750. everlasting.

  751. He is our

  752. everlasting

  753. father.

  754. He is the

  755. originator and

  756. source of

  757. his everlasting

  758. kingdom,

  759. of which you

  760. and I get

  761. to be a part.

  762. We get to be

  763. people in

  764. that kingdom.

  765. We get to be

  766. citizens of

  767. that kingdom.

  768. Jesus is the

  769. founding father

  770. of the heavenly

  771. kingdom.

  772. kingdom.

  773. He is our

  774. founding father.

  775. Ephesians,

  776. I'm sorry,

  777. Hebrews,

  778. the book of

  779. Hebrews,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  780. chapter 12,

  781. the writer

  782. says,

  783. let us run

  784. with endurance

  785. the race set

  786. before us,

  787. looking to

  788. Jesus,

  789. the founder

  790. and protector,

  791. perfecter,

  792. I'm sorry,

  793. of our faith.

  794. Jesus is the

  795. founder of all

  796. of this.

  797. He started

  798. it way back

  799. before any

  800. of us

  801. ever came

  802. around,

  803. way back

  804. before America,

  805. way back

  806. before any

  807. of this that

  808. we know in

  809. our world

  810. to be,

  811. Jesus started

  812. it all.

  813. It all comes

  814. from him.

  815. Now,

  816. the Jews

  817. saw this

  818. term

  819. father

  820. of

  821. as

  822. originator

  823. or source.

  824. It was used

  825. for the head

  826. of a household,

  827. the head

  828. of a people

  829. group,

  830. so we can

  831. see this

  832. word founder

  833. as a synonym.

  834. You see,

  835. Satan is

  836. called the

  837. father of

  838. lies.

  839. You could

  840. look at him

  841. as the

  842. founder

  843. of lies,

  844. but Jesus

  845. is the

  846. father,

  847. the source,

  848. the originator

  849. or the

  850. founder

  851. of eternity.

  852. He is the

  853. founding father

  854. of all

  855. that is

  856. eternal.

  857. If you want

  858. something that

  859. is temporary,

  860. look elsewhere,

  861. but if you

  862. want something

  863. that is

  864. eternal,

  865. look to

  866. Jesus.

  867. And that's

  868. what the

  869. writer of

  870. Hebrews is

  871. encouraging us

  872. to do.

  873. Run this

  874. race set

  875. before you

  876. looking unto

  877. Jesus.

  878. He's the

  879. founder of

  880. our faith.

  881. Now,

  882. there's another

  883. word I'd like

  884. to introduce

  885. in here.

  886. It's the

  887. word pioneer.

  888. Pioneer

  889. means something

  890. out here in

  891. this neck of

  892. the woods,

  893. doesn't it?

  894. Pioneer is a

  895. key part of

  896. this society,

  897. of this

  898. community.

  899. Clay County

  900. Pioneer Union

  901. and Rodeo.

  902. How many

  903. Clay County

  904. pioneers do

  905. we have in

  906. the room

  907. today?

  908. Anybody by

  909. lifted hand?

  910. We actually

  911. have plenty

  912. of pioneers

  913. in here.

  914. I thought

  915. we would.

  916. Somebody

  917. explain to

  918. me what it

  919. takes to

  920. be a pioneer.

  921. I know

  922. you've got

  923. to be born

  924. here and

  925. lived here

  926. for a certain

  927. amount of

  928. time.

  929. So we

  930. take pioneers

  931. seriously here

  932. in Clay

  933. County.

  934. Can I

  935. use that

  936. term then

  937. and explain

  938. to you

  939. what Hebrews

  940. 12.2

  941. says in

  942. the Christian

  943. Standard

  944. Bible?

  945. It uses

  946. this word

  947. instead when

  948. the translators

  949. did their

  950. work and

  951. they came up

  952. with this

  953. word,

  954. keeping our

  955. eyes on

  956. Jesus,

  957. the pioneer

  958. and perfecter

  959. of our

  960. faith.

  961. What does

  962. a pioneer

  963. do?

  964. Am I

  965. correct in

  966. saying that

  967. a pioneer

  968. walks the

  969. road that

  970. others are

  971. meant to

  972. follow?

  973. That he

  974. goes first

  975. and blazes

  976. the trail

  977. and a

  978. pioneer is

  979. the one

  980. who sets

  981. the standard

  982. that others

  983. can then

  984. follow?

  985. Jesus did

  986. exactly that

  987. for you

  988. and for me.

  989. So we are

  990. challenged to

  991. keep our

  992. eyes on

  993. the pioneer.

  994. You can't

  995. be a pioneer

  996. of the

  997. Christian faith.

  998. You might

  999. be a pioneer

  1000. of Clay

  1001. County and

  1002. I applaud

  1003. you for

  1004. that.

  1005. But you

  1006. cannot be

  1007. a pioneer

  1008. of the

  1009. Christian

  1010. faith.

  1011. There was

  1012. only one

  1013. and he

  1014. is the

  1015. one we

  1016. are all

  1017. meant to

  1018. follow.

  1019. Jesus

  1020. is the

  1021. founder.

  1022. He is

  1023. the pioneer

  1024. of our

  1025. faith.

  1026. Now,

  1027. let's look

  1028. just a little

  1029. bit back

  1030. in Hebrews.

  1031. We were in

  1032. Hebrews 12.

  1033. Let's go to

  1034. Hebrews 2.

  1035. In bringing

  1036. many sons

  1037. and daughters

  1038. to glory,

  1039. it was fitting

  1040. that God,

  1041. for whom

  1042. and through

  1043. whom

  1044. everything

  1045. exists,

  1046. just as a

  1047. reminder,

  1048. all of it

  1049. came from

  1050. God,

  1051. right?

  1052. It exists

  1053. for him,

  1054. it exists

  1055. by him,

  1056. through him.

  1057. And so,

  1058. in bringing

  1059. many sons

  1060. and daughters

  1061. to glory,

  1062. it was fitting

  1063. that God

  1064. should make

  1065. the pioneer

  1066. of their

  1067. salvation

  1068. perfect

  1069. through what

  1070. he suffered.

  1071. I thought

  1072. Jesus was

  1073. already perfect.

  1074. Yes,

  1075. but this word

  1076. perfect,

  1077. when it's read

  1078. like this

  1079. in the

  1080. scriptures,

  1081. means complete.

  1082. that this

  1083. would complete

  1084. the story,

  1085. that it

  1086. would bring

  1087. it all

  1088. to an end.

  1089. Jesus

  1090. completed

  1091. the salvation

  1092. story.

  1093. Jesus

  1094. completed

  1095. all of it.

  1096. He was

  1097. the pioneer,

  1098. he started

  1099. it,

  1100. he said,

  1101. I am the

  1102. alpha,

  1103. the beginning,

  1104. and he said,

  1105. I am the

  1106. omega,

  1107. the end.

  1108. Jesus

  1109. was the

  1110. beginning

  1111. and the

  1112. end

  1113. of our

  1114. faith.

  1115. He is

  1116. our pioneer,

  1117. he is the

  1118. one we have

  1119. to follow.

  1120. He is the

  1121. founder,

  1122. he is the

  1123. pioneer,

  1124. and then let

  1125. me assure

  1126. you and

  1127. give you

  1128. comfort with

  1129. this last

  1130. truth,

  1131. the father

  1132. king's reign

  1133. will never

  1134. end.

  1135. He is not

  1136. just called

  1137. the father,

  1138. he is called

  1139. the everlasting

  1140. father.

  1141. It will never

  1142. end.

  1143. What does that

  1144. have to do

  1145. with us?

  1146. Revelation

  1147. 22,

  1148. 13 reminds

  1149. us,

  1150. Jesus said,

  1151. I am the

  1152. alpha and

  1153. omega,

  1154. the first

  1155. and the

  1156. last,

  1157. the beginning

  1158. and the

  1159. end.

  1160. Let me

  1161. explain something

  1162. to you.

  1163. God's

  1164. eternality,

  1165. God's

  1166. eternality,

  1167. what do we

  1168. mean?

  1169. The fact

  1170. that he

  1171. is eternal,

  1172. the fact

  1173. that he

  1174. has no

  1175. end,

  1176. affirms

  1177. his

  1178. divinity.

  1179. That means

  1180. the fact

  1181. that he

  1182. is divine,

  1183. the fact

  1184. that he

  1185. is God.

  1186. So the

  1187. fact that

  1188. he is

  1189. eternal

  1190. brings us

  1191. to the

  1192. fact that

  1193. he is

  1194. God.

  1195. God,

  1196. so we

  1197. can get

  1198. behind

  1199. somebody

  1200. like that.

  1201. We can

  1202. trust

  1203. somebody

  1204. like that.

  1205. We can

  1206. put our

  1207. faith in

  1208. somebody

  1209. like that

  1210. because he's

  1211. the founder

  1212. of it.

  1213. He's the

  1214. pioneer

  1215. of it

  1216. in Philippians

  1217. 1 and

  1218. verse 6

  1219. tells us

  1220. this.

  1221. Before we

  1222. get to the

  1223. takeaway,

  1224. here we

  1225. go.

  1226. Are we

  1227. there?

  1228. There we

  1229. are.

  1230. I am

  1231. certain

  1232. that God,

  1233. here we

  1234. go,

  1235. who began

  1236. the good

  1237. work within

  1238. you,

  1239. will continue

  1240. his work

  1241. until it

  1242. is finally

  1243. finished on

  1244. the day

  1245. when Christ

  1246. Jesus returns.

  1247. He's still

  1248. working on

  1249. me.

  1250. He started

  1251. it.

  1252. He started

  1253. it.

  1254. He's going

  1255. to finish

  1256. it.

  1257. He's going

  1258. to finish

  1259. it.

  1260. He's the

  1261. founder.

  1262. He's the

  1263. pioneer.

  1264. And he's

  1265. everlasting.

  1266. He's

  1267. eternal.

  1268. This is

  1269. our

  1270. everlasting

  1271. father,

  1272. our

  1273. protector,

  1274. our

  1275. provider,

  1276. the

  1277. founder,

  1278. the

  1279. pioneer

  1280. of our

  1281. faith.

  1282. So our

  1283. takeaway this

  1284. morning is

  1285. this.

  1286. Until his

  1287. work in us

  1288. is complete,

  1289. until his

  1290. work in us

  1291. is complete,

  1292. do we

  1293. find ourselves

  1294. in obedience

  1295. to the

  1296. founding

  1297. father

  1298. of our

  1299. faith?

  1300. What do

  1301. mean by

  1302. this?

  1303. It means

  1304. making

  1305. Jesus the

  1306. hero of

  1307. our story.

  1308. It means

  1309. submitting to

  1310. his role

  1311. and his

  1312. authority.

  1313. It means

  1314. saying,

  1315. God, I

  1316. know I've

  1317. got a lot

  1318. of preconceived

  1319. notions on

  1320. how I ought to

  1321. live this

  1322. life.

  1323. I know I

  1324. was brought

  1325. up a certain

  1326. way.

  1327. I've heard a

  1328. lot of things

  1329. taught to me

  1330. and I've

  1331. learned a lot

  1332. of things

  1333. in this

  1334. life.

  1335. But I'm

  1336. not going

  1337. to lean

  1338. on my

  1339. own

  1340. understanding,

  1341. Proverbs

  1342. 3, 5,

  1343. and 6.

  1344. Instead, I'm

  1345. going to

  1346. trust in

  1347. the founder.

  1348. I'm going

  1349. to trust in

  1350. the pioneer.

  1351. I'm going

  1352. to trust in

  1353. my father.

  1354. I'm going

  1355. to trust in

  1356. the Lord

  1357. to direct

  1358. my steps,

  1359. to direct

  1360. my decision

  1361. making,

  1362. to tell me

  1363. how I

  1364. ought to

  1365. think,

  1366. to tell

  1367. me what

  1368. I ought

  1369. to do.

  1370. I'm going

  1371. to give

  1372. up control.

  1373. Boy, that's

  1374. a scary

  1375. thing, isn't

  1376. it?

  1377. We don't

  1378. like giving

  1379. up control.

  1380. But we've

  1381. got to

  1382. recognize that

  1383. our father

  1384. knows what

  1385. he's talking

  1386. about.

  1387. Our father

  1388. is the one

  1389. to whom

  1390. all this

  1391. belongs.

  1392. Our father

  1393. is the one

  1394. who's in

  1395. control of

  1396. it all.

  1397. And say,

  1398. okay, God,

  1399. it's yours.

  1400. Maybe this

  1401. story is not

  1402. playing out

  1403. how I thought

  1404. it would.

  1405. Maybe things

  1406. aren't necessarily

  1407. going how I

  1408. thought it

  1409. would.

  1410. But God,

  1411. you're my

  1412. father.

  1413. So I'm

  1414. going to

  1415. obey you.

  1416. Whatever you

  1417. tell me to

  1418. do, that's

  1419. what I'll

  1420. do.

  1421. Whatever door

  1422. you open, I'll

  1423. walk through

  1424. it.

  1425. Whatever door

  1426. you close, I'm

  1427. not going to

  1428. try to force

  1429. it open.

  1430. Whatever hard

  1431. truth you

  1432. want me to

  1433. accept,

  1434. God, teach

  1435. me.

  1436. Teach me

  1437. as a

  1438. father.

  1439. You'll

  1440. always do

  1441. it gently.

  1442. You'll

  1443. always do

  1444. it compassionately.

  1445. You'll

  1446. always do

  1447. it full

  1448. of love.

  1449. In spite

  1450. of all

  1451. those things

  1452. lacking so

  1453. much in

  1454. this world

  1455. around us,

  1456. we have a

  1457. father who

  1458. will always

  1459. be a good,

  1460. perfect,

  1461. everlasting

  1462. father to

  1463. us.

  1464. Would you

  1465. bow your

  1466. heads and

  1467. pray with

  1468. me?

  1469. God, I

  1470. pray right

  1471. now for

  1472. our church.

  1473. I pray for

  1474. our people.

  1475. I pray for

  1476. your children.

  1477. I'm not

  1478. going to

  1479. assume that

  1480. every person

  1481. in this

  1482. room is

  1483. your child.

  1484. Showing up

  1485. to church

  1486. doesn't

  1487. guarantee us

  1488. a place in

  1489. your family,

  1490. but repenting

  1491. of our sin,

  1492. turning to

  1493. Jesus,

  1494. letting go

  1495. of control

  1496. and placing

  1497. all of our

  1498. faith in

  1499. you is

  1500. what grants

  1501. us the

  1502. privilege of

  1503. being your

  1504. children.

  1505. children.

  1506. So if

  1507. there's

  1508. anybody in

  1509. the room

  1510. today that

  1511. says, I

  1512. need to

  1513. do that,

  1514. I need to

  1515. make that

  1516. decision, I

  1517. need to

  1518. place my

  1519. faith in

  1520. Jesus right

  1521. now before

  1522. I leave

  1523. this room,

  1524. would you

  1525. slip your

  1526. hand up and

  1527. I'll pray

  1528. for you?

  1529. Pray for

  1530. you first.

  1531. Thank you.

  1532. Thank you.

  1533. You can put

  1534. your hand down.

  1535. God, I pray

  1536. for the one

  1537. who's thinking

  1538. right now that

  1539. they need to

  1540. put their faith

  1541. in Jesus and

  1542. become your

  1543. child.

  1544. I pray that

  1545. you would

  1546. give them

  1547. the understanding,

  1548. give them the

  1549. grace to be

  1550. able to say,

  1551. yes, I know

  1552. I'm a sinner.

  1553. I repent of

  1554. my sin.

  1555. I know Jesus

  1556. died for that

  1557. sin.

  1558. He rose from

  1559. the dead.

  1560. He can hear

  1561. me.

  1562. He's alive.

  1563. He hears me

  1564. when I pray.

  1565. And right now

  1566. I'm going to

  1567. ask him to

  1568. cleanse me from

  1569. my sin,

  1570. wash him

  1571. clean forever.

  1572. Make me

  1573. your child.

  1574. And then be

  1575. that good

  1576. father to us.

  1577. The son of

  1578. God and

  1579. God the

  1580. father cannot

  1581. be separated.

  1582. And Jesus

  1583. knows how to

  1584. be the father

  1585. to his people.

  1586. We get to

  1587. be his people.

  1588. God, I thank

  1589. you for that

  1590. privilege.

  1591. Thank you for

  1592. that truth that

  1593. we can take

  1594. through the

  1595. Christmas time

  1596. and say,

  1597. God, I give

  1598. up.

  1599. I surrender.

  1600. I let go.

  1601. You be my

  1602. father.

  1603. You make the

  1604. decisions.

  1605. Church, how

  1606. many of you

  1607. would by lifted

  1608. hands say,

  1609. would you pray

  1610. for me?

  1611. I've got something

  1612. on my heart

  1613. this morning I

  1614. need prayer for.

  1615. You slip your

  1616. hand up right

  1617. now and pray

  1618. for you.

  1619. Thank you.

  1620. Thank you.

  1621. Thank you.

  1622. Thank you.

  1623. God, I pray

  1624. for those that

  1625. raised their

  1626. hand and many

  1627. others who are

  1628. in the midst

  1629. of prayer right

  1630. now.

  1631. And I just

  1632. ask that you

  1633. would step in,

  1634. that you would

  1635. reveal your truth

  1636. in our minds.

  1637. Our minds are

  1638. so weak.

  1639. We think

  1640. sometimes we've

  1641. got it all

  1642. figured out and

  1643. we don't.

  1644. help us to

  1645. remember that

  1646. we are the

  1647. children, you

  1648. are the

  1649. father.

  1650. Help us to

  1651. submit to

  1652. your authority,

  1653. your leadership

  1654. in our lives.

  1655. It's in Jesus'

  1656. name we pray.

  1657. Amen.

  1658. Church, would

  1659. you join us in

  1660. standing if you're

  1661. able to?

  1662. If you'd like to

  1663. keep your seats

  1664. and be in

  1665. prayer, that's

  1666. absolutely fine.

  1667. If you'd like to

  1668. come down here and

  1669. use these steps to

  1670. kneel and just do

  1671. some private prayer,

  1672. that's absolutely

  1673. fine.

  1674. If you'd like to

  1675. come talk to me

  1676. down front, I'm

  1677. available for that.

  1678. If you'd like to

  1679. think about joining

  1680. this church or

  1681. placing your faith

  1682. in Jesus, being

  1683. baptized, whatever

  1684. God's put on your

  1685. heart, let's just

  1686. spend a couple of

  1687. minutes before we

  1688. dismiss this morning

  1689. doing business with

  1690. God.
