  1. All right, church, I want to introduce to you my friend Dan Curry.

  2. He is our Area 9 Texas Baptist representative.

  3. And more than that, he has become a friend to me over the last few years

  4. from when I was working down at Southwestern Seminary.

  5. And I think we golfed together at some point, and that was fun.

  6. But I've gotten to see his heart for the Lord and for ministry,

  7. and he's been a good advisor and voice in my ear,

  8. and I'm very grateful for our relationship.

  9. But he is our Area Representative for the Baptist General Convention of Texas

  10. from Fort Worth, I think, all the way up to Wichita Falls.

  11. And there's probably a lot of other area in there as well.

  12. But he serves a lot of churches, a lot of pastors in that way,

  13. and we're grateful for his service.

  14. Got probably close to 50 years of ministerial experience,

  15. and is a graduate of Wayland Baptist University.

  16. He got his master's degree and doctorate from Southwestern Seminary

  17. and served for about 24 years or so as the pastor of South Oaks Baptist Church

  18. in Arlington, Texas.

  19. He's currently an interim pastor for a church in Arlington,

  20. and we're grateful for him taking this time to come up here

  21. and be with us this morning.

  22. So y'all open your Bibles and be ready to hear what the Lord has given Dan Curry for us.

  23. Thank you, Sam, for the introduction.

  24. And it is a joy to be here today, and it is a wonderful opportunity for me.

  25. I have driven by this church so many times, or driven by Henrietta,

  26. and thought about this church so many times through the years

  27. because my family lived and my parents lived out in Kittiquay, Texas,

  28. out near Esteline.

  29. And if you're going that direction on 287, you know where Esteline is

  30. because it is a speed trap.

  31. And so everybody knows where that is.

  32. But yes, I am the area rep for the Baptist General Convention of Texas,

  33. and so that's a mouthful, okay?

  34. And that being a mouthful, years ago we kind of shortened that to the BGCT.

  35. All right?

  36. Well, then other organizations began to have alphabet names, you know,

  37. and we were going, maybe that's not a good idea anymore.

  38. And so the last few years we have been branded,

  39. we've branded our name as Texas Baptist.

  40. And so that's who we are.

  41. It is the Baptist General Convention of Texas,

  42. but we go by the brand of Texas Baptist.

  43. And you're a part of us as Texas Baptist.

  44. In fact, churches all across this state,

  45. over 5,000 of them make up Texas Baptist.

  46. And you are a part of us through your cooperative program, Giving.

  47. And this is budget time,

  48. or you just passed your budget or sometime recently,

  49. and many of you probably looked up there and said,

  50. cooperative program giving.

  51. When are we ever going to get the cooperative program paid off, you know?

  52. Well, hopefully never, all right?

  53. But anyway, that money is funneled through Texas Baptist,

  54. and there it goes and does ministry and missions across the state

  55. and across the world.

  56. And so it is a great thing.

  57. We're very thankful that you're a part of that.

  58. And I just represent one aspect of that.

  59. We have nine area reps.

  60. We try to be, you know,

  61. a representative for Texas Baptist

  62. to the 5,000 churches that are part of us.

  63. We also try to be a resource person for the pastors and staff

  64. when they have a thought and going,

  65. where can I turn for some advice,

  66. or where can I turn for support?

  67. Where can I turn for maybe some training

  68. in something like evangelism

  69. or something else in, you know, church growth or something?

  70. And we have those resources for that.

  71. And then my favorite part of my job is this.

  72. I get to meet pastors

  73. and be their friend

  74. and be their encourager.

  75. I like the idea of being their Barnabas,

  76. to come alongside them and encourage them,

  77. pray for them,

  78. and when they need some support,

  79. they know they can call me

  80. and I can be their friend.

  81. And so that's the part of the job that I like the most.

  82. And I've got to be that with Sam

  83. and I appreciate Sam, you know,

  84. not only turning to me occasionally

  85. and calling me

  86. and being that kind of,

  87. being able to minister to him in that way,

  88. but he's also ministered to me

  89. in my times of difficulty.

  90. And so it is a mutual thing.

  91. And so it's great to be here

  92. and it's great to be a part of Texas Baptist.

  93. And we're very thankful for your gifts

  94. as to Texas Baptist.

  95. And so enough about Texas Baptist.

  96. Y'all didn't come here today

  97. on this last Sunday of the year

  98. to hear just about Texas Baptist.

  99. I have hopefully a word from God for you today.

  100. And so I hope that you will turn with me

  101. in your Bible

  102. or look it up on your device

  103. or today

  104. in Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  105. We're going to be looking at a passage of Scripture there today.

  106. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  107. And we're going to begin in just a moment

  108. in verse 13.

  109. Romans chapter 1, beginning in verse 13.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  110. The text today,

  111. talking about being ready,

  112. is sort of one of my favorite texts.

  113. But it has a little history.

  114. I felt called to preach

  115. when I was in junior high.

  116. But when I turned about 15,

  117. my dad,

  118. who was a pastor of a church

  119. out in West Texas,

  120. at that time,

  121. he was pastor at

  122. First Baptist Church,

  123. Ropesville,

  124. which is just outside of Lubbock.

  125. And dad came to me

  126. and he says,

  127. son,

  128. do you think you're ready to preach?

  129. I go,

  130. whoa,

  131. you know,

  132. I just lost words.

  133. I don't know that I am.

  134. He says,

  135. I think you ought to preach

  136. this next Sunday

  137. on Sunday night.

  138. And he says,

  139. so think about that for a day.

  140. And I did.

  141. And he says,

  142. are you ready?

  143. And I go,

  144. well,

  145. I don't know.

  146. He says,

  147. do you know what you want to preach on?

  148. I go,

  149. no,

  150. I don't.

  151. He says,

  152. well,

  153. let me give you an idea.

  154. All right.

  155. And so he chose this text for me.

  156. I read the text.

  157. He read the text to me

  158. and I looked at it.

  159. I read the text.

  160. I started going over the text.

  161. My dad had,

  162. you know,

  163. a library of books.

  164. I started looking at all those things,

  165. you know,

  166. resources.

  167. And because my dad said,

  168. son,

  169. this is a really rich for,

  170. these are rich verses.

  171. This is really good stuff.

  172. There is lots of great stuff here.

  173. And so I began to look for all that great stuff,

  174. you know.

  175. And so I studied all week long,

  176. prepared,

  177. had an outline,

  178. had everything ready for Sunday night.

  179. I had this passage of scripture and he says,

  180. you know,

  181. I was thinking of what my dad said.

  182. This is really rich.

  183. It's a lot,

  184. got a lot of rich,

  185. good stuff in it.

  186. And I got up and I,

  187. and I preached.

  188. And it was the best seven minute sermon.

  189. Anyone could ever have.

  190. Well,

  191. my dad was correct.

  192. There's a lot of things in this passage of scripture.

  193. And I hate to tell you this morning,

  194. my sermon is going to last longer than seven minutes.

  195. And we're not even going to get to it all today.

  196. We're not going to get to everything in this text,

  197. but it is really rich.

  198. It is really good.

  199. And it is a good way to start out a new year with thinking about being ready.

  200. And so let's look at the text today.

  201. Paul writes to the church at Rome and he says,

  202. I do not want you to be unaware brothers that I have often intended to come to you,

  203. but thus far have been prevented in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the Gentiles.

  204. I am under obligation both to the Greeks and to the barbarians,

  205. both to the wise and to the foolish.

  206. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

  207. For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  208. for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  209. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  210. For in it,

  211. the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  212. As it is written,

  213. the just shall live by faith.

  214. There is a lot to meet here.

  215. A lot for us to chew on today.

  216. And before we really get into all of what is in this text,

  217. let's think about for a moment who wrote this text.

  218. Who shares this with us?

  219. Who is he sharing it to?

  220. It is Paul,

  221. the Apostle Paul.

  222. If we remember,

  223. the Apostle Paul was not always the Apostle Paul.

  224. He was also known as Saul.

  225. Remember?

  226. Saul,

  227. who was the Pharisee.

  228. Saul,

  229. who was the persecutor of those early Christians.

  230. He was Saul,

  231. who was there when Stephen was stoned,

  232. and Saul kept all the garments while he egged those on

  233. to throw those stones at Stephen and kill him.

  234. It is this Saul who was assigned to go to Damascus

  235. to destroy those who were a part of the movement called The Way.

  236. Those who were followers of Jesus Christ.

  237. That was his responsibility.

  238. He was on his way to Damascus in Syria to do just that.

  239. And on that road to Damascus,

  240. he encountered the Lord in a large, bright light.

  241. And his life was transformed.

  242. He immediately recognized

  243. that he needed Jesus Christ in his life.

  244. And when he finally got to Damascus,

  245. God sent someone to share with him

  246. how he could have Jesus in his life.

  247. And Jesus comes into Saul's life.

  248. And we know some of the rest of the story.

  249. He becomes the Apostle Paul.

  250. He becomes the greatest missionary of the Gospel.

  251. He, we look at our New Testament

  252. and realize, you know,

  253. as Paul writes to the churches

  254. where he helped start and helped influence,

  255. we find over half the New Testament

  256. is accredited to the Apostle Paul writing to us.

  257. So we find here, this is who writes this.

  258. This is the person who is sharing with us today

  259. this thing, if he says,

  260. I was obligated to share the Gospel.

  261. I had this obligation.

  262. He had an obligation, I think,

  263. partly because he looked back on his life

  264. and he realized,

  265. I tried to destroy the church.

  266. Now I have this obligation

  267. to make sure that Jesus Christ is known.

  268. I have a debt to pay.

  269. A debt to pay.

  270. I want to tell you today,

  271. if you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior,

  272. somewhere in your life,

  273. someone shared with you how to come to know Jesus

  274. and you have experienced that today in your life.

  275. You have experienced his forgiveness.

  276. You've experienced the freedom

  277. that Jesus Christ has given.

  278. you've experienced the full life

  279. that Jesus Christ wants you to have in your life today.

  280. Then you have also an obligation,

  281. a debt to pay.

  282. The question is,

  283. are you ready?

  284. I grew up in a time when,

  285. as a kid,

  286. that it was very important.

  287. Anyway,

  288. I joined Boy Scouts when I was 11 years old

  289. and I've been a Boy Scout ever since.

  290. I'm still a Scout at heart, okay?

  291. I love the organization.

  292. I'm not, you know,

  293. I'm very supportive of the organization.

  294. I know that they've made some weird decisions lately

  295. and all those kind of things,

  296. but the Boy Scout organization,

  297. the Boy Scout things they taught

  298. have really made an impact in my life.

  299. And if you're a Scout

  300. or know anything about Scouting,

  301. you know that there's a motto

  302. that goes with Scouting,

  303. and it is,

  304. be prepared.

  305. Not a long motto,

  306. just be prepared.

  307. Be prepared.

  308. And it is,

  309. be prepared for everything

  310. that might come your way.

  311. Be prepared.

  312. The question is,

  313. are we prepared

  314. when it comes to sharing the gospel,

  315. this debt,

  316. this obligation

  317. we have as believers,

  318. are we prepared

  319. to do

  320. what God wants us to do?

  321. Well,

  322. Paul, I think,

  323. shares with us here

  324. some hints

  325. in how to be prepared,

  326. okay?

  327. The first

  328. way that we can be prepared

  329. is this.

  330. We need

  331. to be

  332. proud

  333. of the gospel

  334. of Jesus Christ.

  335. Now,

  336. you know,

  337. I use that term,

  338. you know,

  339. we are proud

  340. of the gospel message.

  341. But let's,

  342. what is,

  343. those are real

  344. biblical terms,

  345. churchy terms,

  346. you know,

  347. gospel.

  348. We use it all the time.

  349. Do you know

  350. what it means?

  351. What is the gospel?

  352. The term,

  353. gospel itself,

  354. means good news.

  355. Well,

  356. okay,

  357. so we're proud

  358. of the good news.

  359. Good news

  360. implies that

  361. there's bad news.

  362. Okay?

  363. Let's look at

  364. the bad news first.

  365. The bad news

  366. is this.

  367. The bad news

  368. is this.

  369. Found in Paul

  370. writing here,

  371. Paul's writing

  372. in Romans,

  373. he tells us

  374. what the bad news

  375. is.

  376. The bad news

  377. is that we're

  378. all sinners.

  379. Romans 3,

  380. 23,

  381. for all have

  382. sinned and fallen

  383. short of the glory

  384. of God.

  385. That's bad news.

  386. We're all sinners.

  387. We all fall short

  388. of what God

  389. wants us to do

  390. in our life.

  391. All of us do that.

  392. We fit that mold.

  393. Let's don't get

  394. high and mighty

  395. because we go to

  396. church every week.

  397. We just really

  398. need to realize

  399. that we're all

  400. sinners,

  401. you know,

  402. okay?

  403. Now,

  404. that's bad news

  405. to some degree,

  406. but we can look

  407. around and go,

  408. well,

  409. everybody else

  410. is a sinner.

  411. Well,

  412. Paul goes on

  413. and he says

  414. the wages of sin

  415. is death.

  416. Whoa.

  417. Wages.

  418. What we deserve,

  419. what we should get

  420. for our sin

  421. is death.

  422. Wow.

  423. Well,

  424. that verse goes on

  425. and he says,

  426. but the gift of God

  427. is eternal life

  428. through Jesus Christ.

  429. There is bad news

  430. there in that

  431. because we're all

  432. sinners,

  433. we deserve death,

  434. but he also tells us

  435. there is,

  436. there is some

  437. relief here.

  438. He says,

  439. the gift of God

  440. is eternal life

  441. through Jesus Christ.

  442. We don't have to die,

  443. but it's through

  444. Jesus Christ.

  445. Now,

  446. how is that possible?

  447. Well,

  448. Paul doesn't leave us

  449. in the hole there.

  450. He tells us in Romans 5,

  451. 8,

  452. he says that Christ

  453. died for us.

  454. While we were yet

  455. sinners,

  456. Christ died for us.

  457. While we were

  458. undeserving,

  459. he died

  460. for us.

  461. And then,

  462. in Romans 9,

  463. and 10,

  464. and 11,

  465. he tells us

  466. the way that we can

  467. receive this gift

  468. of God,

  469. of eternal life,

  470. the way we can be

  471. found,

  472. forgiven,

  473. and free in our life,

  474. the way we can

  475. experience full life

  476. is to make a commitment

  477. to Christ,

  478. to follow Him.

  479. Okay,

  480. folks,

  481. that's the gospel.

  482. That's the gospel.

  483. It is good news.

  484. The good news is,

  485. even though I'm a sinner,

  486. Christ died for me.

  487. I don't have to live

  488. in that any longer.

  489. I don't have to live

  490. there any longer.

  491. I can be forgiven.

  492. I can have a full life,

  493. an abundant life,

  494. in Christ.

  495. We need to be proud

  496. of the gospel.

  497. Are we proud

  498. of the gospel?

  499. We excited

  500. about the gospel?

  501. We excited

  502. about the fact

  503. that Jesus Christ

  504. died on the cross

  505. for us?

  506. We excited

  507. that He shed

  508. His blood for us

  509. on the cross?

  510. Are we excited

  511. about the fact

  512. that we don't have

  513. to die?

  514. Are we excited

  515. that He can give us

  516. full life?

  517. We need to be proud

  518. of the gospel.

  519. That's the first place

  520. to be ready

  521. in this new year.

  522. Let's get excited

  523. about the gospel.

  524. But Paul doesn't

  525. stop there.

  526. He goes on

  527. and he says

  528. that we should also

  529. understand the power

  530. of the gospel.

  531. For he says,

  532. it, the gospel,

  533. is the power

  534. of God

  535. for salvation.

  536. It is the power

  537. of God

  538. for salvation

  539. to everyone

  540. who believes,

  541. to the Jew first

  542. and also to the Greek.

  543. It is the power.

  544. The Greek word

  545. power there

  546. is the word

  547. dynamo,

  548. dynamite,

  549. dynamic.

  550. You get the idea?

  551. All those are

  552. English words

  553. that we've taken

  554. from that Greek word

  555. dynamo

  556. and used,

  557. but it is the ideal

  558. of great power.

  559. Exciting power.

  560. Explosive power.

  561. There is power

  562. in the gospel.

  563. Power.

  564. Here's the,

  565. the power comes

  566. in the fact

  567. that I can't change.

  568. But you know what?

  569. God can change me.

  570. He can change me.

  571. We enter,

  572. we come to the end

  573. of the year,

  574. we begin a new year,

  575. we begin to think

  576. about resolutions

  577. we make every year.

  578. I, you know,

  579. I don't know

  580. where you are

  581. in your resolutions

  582. from last year.

  583. Last year,

  584. I, I began the year

  585. and I had just

  586. one resolution,

  587. okay?

  588. Uh, and that was,

  589. I, I was resolved

  590. to lose 20 pounds

  591. during the year.

  592. I resolved to do that.

  593. Well, I, I'm just

  594. going to tell you,

  595. I'm just not very good

  596. at that, okay?

  597. I'm just not very good

  598. at that, you know?

  599. I, I am doing better

  600. this year because,

  601. you know, but, uh,

  602. I will tell you,

  603. I've had the same

  604. resolution for about

  605. 10 years.

  606. And I haven't got

  607. there yet.

  608. And the reason is,

  609. not that it's impossible

  610. to lose 20 pounds,

  611. but me doing it

  612. on my own,

  613. eh, not real good

  614. at that.

  615. You know?

  616. In fact, you know,

  617. there was a couple

  618. of years I got

  619. to December the 1st

  620. and I was going,

  621. okay, how am I doing

  622. with my goal

  623. to lose 20 pounds?

  624. And I would go,

  625. whew, I only have

  626. 25 more to go.

  627. You know?

  628. You, you see,

  629. we, we think

  630. we can change our life.

  631. And most of the time

  632. we don't have the power

  633. to even figure out

  634. how to lose 20 pounds.

  635. Much less get rid

  636. of the sin,

  637. the guilt

  638. in our life.

  639. Or to get rid of

  640. all the temptations

  641. that Satan throws our way,

  642. pulls.

  643. He knows our,

  644. he knows every button

  645. we have.

  646. And he pushes those buttons.

  647. We, we think

  648. we can just

  649. handle that on our own.

  650. We can't.

  651. We need the power

  652. of the gospel.

  653. We can look at just the,

  654. the life of the apostle Paul

  655. and see the power

  656. of the gospel.

  657. Paul,

  658. the persecutor

  659. of the,

  660. of the early church.

  661. Paul,

  662. who was,

  663. he was at that time

  664. named Saul,

  665. he was the persecutor

  666. of that early church.

  667. He was destroying

  668. the church

  669. and God,

  670. what,

  671. changed him.

  672. He becomes the greatest

  673. missionary of all times

  674. and the writer

  675. of over half

  676. the New Testament.

  677. How'd that happen?

  678. It happened

  679. by the power

  680. of God.

  681. When I moved

  682. to Arlington

  683. back in 1992,

  684. my,

  685. my daughter

  686. who is very,

  687. she's extrovert

  688. to some degree.

  689. She began to meet

  690. all the girls

  691. in the neighborhood

  692. that were her age.

  693. I mean,

  694. every one of them.

  695. Within about a week

  696. or two,

  697. you know,

  698. we had three or four girls

  699. coming to our house

  700. all the time

  701. from the neighborhood.

  702. One of those girls,

  703. the name was Rebecca

  704. and Crystal found out,

  705. figured out really quick

  706. that Rebecca

  707. didn't go to church

  708. very often

  709. and so she invited

  710. Rebecca

  711. to go to church

  712. with us.

  713. And so Rebecca

  714. started going

  715. to church with us

  716. and on the way

  717. to church,

  718. occasionally I would

  719. have to go,

  720. Rebecca,

  721. we don't say that

  722. at church.

  723. We don't say,

  724. we don't use that word

  725. and because Rebecca's

  726. language was not

  727. necessarily the greatest.

  728. She had incorporated

  729. some terms

  730. that she had

  731. probably heard

  732. from her dad.

  733. Okay?

  734. Well,

  735. you know,

  736. I wanted to get to know

  737. the parents of these girls

  738. that Crystal

  739. was bringing around

  740. and so one day

  741. I went over

  742. and met Rebecca's dad.

  743. He was out in the garage,

  744. his garage.

  745. He had a really nice garage.

  746. I mean,

  747. he had a really,

  748. now he didn't park

  749. his car in his garage

  750. or his truck

  751. but he parked

  752. his Harley

  753. in his garage.

  754. He had a place

  755. for his Harley.

  756. He had this nice floor,

  757. it had been painted,

  758. he had a nice love seat

  759. there in his garage,

  760. he had a big screen TV,

  761. he had a little wet bar

  762. over here on the other side

  763. and his Harley.

  764. Okay?

  765. And when I went over

  766. to see him,

  767. he was messing

  768. with his Harley.

  769. He had,

  770. you know,

  771. sort of a,

  772. well it was a

  773. t-shirt with the sleeves

  774. cut off on it.

  775. Alright?

  776. And his shorts

  777. and his sandals on

  778. and he had tattoos

  779. all over his arm,

  780. on his legs,

  781. everywhere.

  782. Going,

  783. oh wow.

  784. So I met Bob.

  785. You know,

  786. I told him who it was.

  787. It was kind of cold.

  788. Like,

  789. meeting ice.

  790. Okay?

  791. Just cold.

  792. Everything just,

  793. immediately after I told him

  794. what I did,

  795. there was just this block

  796. just between me and him

  797. and, you know,

  798. and he just didn't say much.

  799. You know,

  800. on my walk back

  801. from his house

  802. to my house,

  803. I was going,

  804. you know,

  805. okay,

  806. I just don't even know

  807. if God can fix this.

  808. I don't know if God

  809. can ever change Bob.

  810. Just don't know.

  811. Me of little faith.

  812. Because,

  813. within a month or two,

  814. Rebecca got saved

  815. at church camp.

  816. And,

  817. Rebecca

  818. had to be baptized.

  819. Wanted to be baptized.

  820. So,

  821. Bob came

  822. to her baptism.

  823. He came

  824. to see her baptized.

  825. That was the first time

  826. he had been in church

  827. in who knows how long.

  828. And,

  829. then,

  830. every time the youth

  831. did something,

  832. you know,

  833. Rebecca would give

  834. a testimony or something.

  835. He was there

  836. on Sunday night.

  837. He'd come.

  838. And,

  839. then he realized

  840. on Sunday night

  841. we were kind of casual

  842. at the church.

  843. Not,

  844. well,

  845. just not on Sunday night.

  846. He just didn't know.

  847. But,

  848. on Sunday night

  849. we were especially casual.

  850. We were meeting

  851. in a sanctuasium.

  852. You know what a sanctuasium is?

  853. A gematorium.

  854. And,

  855. and every Sunday night

  856. we had to pick up

  857. the chairs

  858. and stack them

  859. and all those kind of things.

  860. And,

  861. we had this saying,

  862. you know,

  863. at,

  864. at South Oaks

  865. we stack them

  866. seven high.

  867. All right?

  868. And,

  869. so,

  870. we even had t-shirts made.

  871. You know?

  872. Said South Oaks

  873. and on the back of them

  874. it says we stack them

  875. seven high.

  876. And,

  877. it was talking about

  878. the chairs.

  879. And,

  880. and so,

  881. Bob loved to come

  882. because after church

  883. nobody paid much attention

  884. to him.

  885. He'd be stacking chairs.

  886. And,

  887. then he'd sneak out.

  888. Okay?

  889. Well,

  890. one

  891. night

  892. on Sunday night

  893. I had noticed

  894. there was a difference

  895. in Bob.

  896. And,

  897. so he was coming

  898. out the door

  899. and I grabbed him.

  900. I said,

  901. Bob.

  902. I just looked at him

  903. and go,

  904. when did you get saved?

  905. And,

  906. he looked at me

  907. and he says,

  908. preacher,

  909. about three weeks ago

  910. what you were preaching,

  911. you know,

  912. I was preaching

  913. through Romans

  914. and he's going,

  915. he said,

  916. I got to looking

  917. at what you were preaching

  918. and I went home

  919. and I studied it some more

  920. and I,

  921. I just asked the Lord

  922. to come into my life.

  923. And I go,

  924. well Bob,

  925. I can see the difference

  926. in your life.

  927. And he goes,

  928. well,

  929. there's a true difference

  930. in my life.

  931. well,

  932. I said,

  933. Bob,

  934. you need to be baptized.

  935. Ah,

  936. yeah,

  937. I know.

  938. But I'm an old man.

  939. I wasn't that old.

  940. But anyway,

  941. he felt like,

  942. I'm old.

  943. I can't be,

  944. I said,

  945. Bob,

  946. you need to be baptized.

  947. You need to be able

  948. to share with the world

  949. that you've been,

  950. been saved

  951. and you do that

  952. through baptism.

  953. And so,

  954. I baptized Bob

  955. and,

  956. and man,

  957. you talk about somebody

  958. who was excited

  959. about being baptized.

  960. He was excited.

  961. Well,

  962. long story short,

  963. that's been about

  964. 25 years ago.

  965. Bob is still very active

  966. in South Oaks Baptist Church

  967. in,

  968. in Arlington.

  969. He has been on the finance team

  970. many,

  971. many times

  972. because he is just really good

  973. at those kind of things.

  974. He serves now

  975. as the topper Sunday school teacher

  976. and has been teaching

  977. for about 15 years.

  978. He is

  979. a great man.

  980. In fact,

  981. this week,

  982. he contacted me,

  983. talked to me,

  984. you know.

  985. Now,

  986. looking at him,

  987. you go,

  988. he's had another life.

  989. See,

  990. I gave up.

  991. But you know what?

  992. There is power

  993. in the gospel.

  994. There's people

  995. in your life

  996. right now.

  997. There's people

  998. here in this community

  999. you've given up on.

  1000. But you know what?

1001. God has not given up on them.

  1002. There is power

  1003. in the gospel.

  1004. Paul says

  1005. that power

  1006. of God,

  1007. it is the power

  1008. of God

  1009. for salvation.

  1010. Salvation

  1011. from sin.

  1012. Salvation

  1013. for eternal life.

  1014. Salvation.

  1015. salvation.

  1016. Then there's a third thing

1017. that we also need to,

1018. if we're going to be ready,

1019. we need to be proud

  1020. of the gospel.

  1021. We need to understand

  1022. there is the power

  1023. of the gospel.

  1024. But there's a third thing.

1025. We also need to understand

1026. we need to live out

  1027. the gospel

  1028. in our life.

1029. We need to live it out.

1030. Paul writes it this way.

  1031. He says,

1032. for it is the gospel

  1033. or the righteousness

  1034. of God

  1035. is revealed

  1036. from faith

  1037. for faith

  1038. as it is written.

  1039. The righteous

  1040. shall live

  1041. by faith.

  1042. See,

  1043. I grew up

  1044. in a Baptist church.

  1045. I know

  1046. about Baptists.

  1047. Okay?

  1048. We often,

  1049. not always,

  1050. not everyone,

  1051. but we often

  1052. have this tendency

  1053. as Baptists

  1054. and as believers

  1055. and all those

  1056. kind of things.

  1057. we think,

  1058. okay,

  1059. now that I'm saved,

  1060. I've got to live

  1061. by these rules.

  1062. All these rules.

  1063. Really?

1064. Where do you find that?

  1065. It says here

1066. we shall live by faith.

  1067. Faith?

1068. We all have a list.

  1069. I'd say it.

  1070. Baptists are bad

  1071. about our list.

  1072. You know,

  1073. you can't drink,

  1074. you can't dance,

  1075. you know,

  1076. all the cants,

  1077. you can't do this,

  1078. you can't do that,

  1079. can't do all those

  1080. kind of things

  1081. because you do

1082. all those kind of things

  1083. then you ain't a believer.

  1084. You can't do

1085. all those kind of things.

  1086. We have lists.

  1087. We have all this

  1088. kind of stuff.

  1089. You know?

  1090. And,

1091. we have to live by faith.

1092. And what we've done is

  1093. we've traded away

  1094. the freedom

1095. that we have in Christ

1096. and we just put chains

  1097. on ourself.

  1098. We need to understand

1099. that we need to live

  1100. by faith.

1101. How did we get saved?

1102. We get saved by our works?

  1103. No.

1104. We did not get saved

  1105. by our works.

  1106. We didn't deserve anything.

  1107. We were sinners.

  1108. There's no way

  1109. we could save ourself.

  1110. But we think now

1111. we have to live that way.

  1112. No,

  1113. you don't.

  1114. You live

  1115. in this freedom

1116. that God has given to you.

  1117. Because here's the thing.

  1118. Here's what happens.

  1119. A person gets saved

  1120. and they think,

1121. oh, now I've got Christ

  1122. in my life.

1123. I've got God in my life.

  1124. And God begins

  1125. to transform that life.

1126. He begins to change that life.

  1127. He does.

1128. And then Satan comes along.

1129. He tempts and he moves.

1130. And the first thing you know,

  1131. a person has made a mistake.

  1132. They've sinned.

  1133. In their life.

  1134. And they're going,

1135. okay, I'm not sure this works.

  1136. They've given up.

1137. And now they feel guilty

  1138. because they've got

1139. their sin in their life.

  1140. And they're going,

1141. and what do I do about that?

  1142. I'm going,

  1143. they're going,

1144. and Satan loves to use that.

  1145. They're going,

1146. you can't talk about your faith.

1147. You can't talk about the gospel.

1148. You can't talk about that

1149. because look at that sin

  1150. in your life.

  1151. because you feel guilty.

  1152. I don't know if you've ever noticed

  1153. small children,

1154. when they do something wrong

1155. and you get on to them,

1156. they immediately stop looking at you.

  1157. Immediately they,

  1158. you know,

  1159. you get on to a two-year-old,

  1160. three-year-old,

1161. you get on to them and say,

  1162. son,

1163. you shouldn't be doing that.

1164. They're not looking at you.

  1165. Why?

1166. Because the relationship is broken

  1167. because they have sinned.

  1168. They have broken something.

  1169. They've broken the relationship.

  1170. And when we sin,

1171. we break that relationship with God.

  1172. Now,

  1173. it doesn't mean we're not saved,

1174. but that relationship is hindered.

  1175. Just like a child.

1176. A child that disobeys their dad

  1177. is still a child.

  1178. Disobedient child.

1179. How do they come back?

1180. They come back the same way

  1181. through faith.

1182. And when they have faith,

  1183. in what?

1184. They have to have faith

1185. that they are going to be saved,

1186. that they're going to be forgiven.

1187. And they come back and go,

  1188. hey,

  1189. yeah,

  1190. I blew it.

  1191. I messed up.

  1192. I messed up,

  1193. God.

  1194. Can you forgive me?

  1195. Well,

  1196. yes,

1197. because when God died on the cross,

1198. He not only forgave our sins in the past,

  1199. but in the present,

1200. but all those in the future.

  1201. We're saved by faith,

  1202. friends.

1203. And what Satan likes to do is going,

1204. now you can't share the gospel.

  1205. You can't do that

1206. because you've got this sin in your life.

  1207. No,

1208. get rid of the sin.

  1209. See,

1210. Satan wants to use it going,

  1211. don't share the faith.

  1212. Don't share the gospel.

  1213. Don't do that.

  1214. Don't do it

1215. because you've got this sin in your life.

1216. And really what God wants you to do is

1217. get rid of the sin.

1218. And how do you do that?

  1219. You just say,

  1220. God,

1221. I've got this sin in my life.

  1222. Can you forgive me?

  1223. And what happens is,

  1224. even a child,

  1225. when they go,

  1226. Dad,

  1227. I'm sorry.

  1228. And the dad goes,

  1229. all of a sudden,

  1230. that's fine.

1231. I'm going to forgive you.

  1232. I forgive you.

  1233. All of a sudden,

1234. that child will stop looking down

1235. and make eye contact with their father

1236. because now that relationship is mended.

1237. That's what it means to live by faith.

1238. So my challenge for you today

1239. is if we're going to be ready here

1240. in this last challenge is this.

1241. We need to get rid of the sins in our life,

1242. lift up our eyes to Jesus Christ,

1243. renew that relationship with God

1244. so that we can complete the obligation,

1245. the debt we have to share the gospel.

  1246. Are you ready?

  1247. I have a good pastor friend,

  1248. Sam Cliff,

1249. and Cliff is a pastor

1250. of the First Baptist Church in Cleburne.

  1251. And he's a pretty neat guy.

  1252. He's got a lot of energy.

1253. He was a high school coach

1254. and God called him to ministry.

1255. Now he's a pastor of First Baptist Church in Cleburne.

1256. But he's still got the energy

1257. of a high school football coach

  1258. just buzzing around.

1259. I just love to call him.

  1260. I go,

  1261. Hey Cliff,

  1262. you know,

  1263. I go,

  1264. How are you doing?

  1265. He goes,

  1266. I'm ready.

  1267. I mean,

  1268. he always says that.

  1269. I go,

  1270. Cliff,

  1271. how are you doing?

  1272. I'm ready.

  1273. I said,

  1274. Ready for what?

1275. Ready for whatever God wants me to do.

  1276. I'm ready.

  1277. Wow,

  1278. I like that.

1279. I like that kind of spirit.

1280. That's the spirit we need.

  1281. That's the spirit

1282. First Baptist Church Henrietta needs.

  1283. That's the spirit

1284. the believers in this church need

  1285. to spread the gospel

  1286. in this community

  1287. in 2025.

1288. We need to have that kind of spirit

  1289. that says,

  1290. You know,

  1291. I'm ready.

  1292. I'm ready.

1293. I'm proud of the gospel.

  1294. The gospel has power

  1295. to change people's lives.

  1296. It has the power

  1297. to mend their lives.

  1298. It has the power

1299. to give people full lives.

  1300. It has that power

  1301. to do that.

1302. And Satan is not going

1303. to keep me from doing it

  1304. because I am going

1305. to continually live by faith

  1306. by trusting him.

  1307. Can you do that?

  1308. Let's be ready.

1309. Some of you have been in church

1310. as long as I have.

1311. Maybe not as long as I have,

  1312. but 50 something years,

  1313. 60 years,

  1314. 70 years,

  1315. nearly 70 years,

  1316. Sam.

  1317. I've been in church.

1318. There is this old song.

1319. It's in the hymn book.

  1320. Ready.

  1321. Ready to go.

  1322. Ready to stay.

1323. Ready my place to fill.

  1324. Ready for service,

  1325. lowly or great.

1326. Ready to do his will.

1327. Ready to suffer grief or pain.

1328. Ready to stand the test.

1329. Ready to stay at home

  1330. and send others

  1331. if he sees best.

  1332. Ready to speak.

  1333. Ready to think.

1334. Ready with heart and mind.

  1335. Ready to stand

  1336. where he sees fit.

1337. Ready his will to find.

  1338. Can you say,

  1339. today,

  1340. today,

  1341. today,

  1342. I'm ready.

  1343. Would that be,

1344. could that be your motto

  1345. for this year?

  1346. In 2025,

  1347. could you say,

  1348. I mean,

  1349. the Boy Scouts,

  1350. it's,

  1351. I,

  1352. be prepared.

  1353. In this church,

  1354. in this time,

  1355. could you just say,

  1356. my motto is,

  1357. be ready.

  1358. Be ready.

1359. And I'm going to be ready.

1360. Let's stand with heads bowed,

  1361. all right?

  1362. Our Heavenly Father,

  1363. Lord,

  1364. you know the hearts

1365. of those that are here.

  1366. And Lord,

1367. those who need to respond

  1368. to your will today.

  1369. And Lord,

1370. we give you this invitation.

1371. We give you this time.

  1372. And give this,

  1373. this opportunity

1374. for these to make a,

  1375. a decision

  1376. and to respond

  1377. to the gospel

  1378. and to respond

  1379. to the challenge

1380. that they have been given.

  1381. And so,

  1382. Lord,

  1383. we ask that

  1384. as we give you

  1385. this invitation,

  1386. that your people

  1387. would respond

  1388. in obedience

  1389. to you.

  1390. In Jesus' name,

  1391. amen.

1392. Sam is going to be

1393. right here at the front

1394. as we sing this time

  1395. and sing this song.

1396. And this is the time

  1397. to respond.

  1398. I am a thorough believer,

  1399. in this,

  1400. that every time

  1401. that we hear

  1402. God's word,

  1403. he demands a response.

  1404. Now,

  1405. it doesn't mean

1406. that you need to come down

  1407. every Sunday

  1408. and grab Sam's hand,

1409. but maybe sometimes you do.

  1410. But you shouldn't leave

  1411. here today

  1412. without saying,

  1413. God,

1414. this is how I'm going

  1415. to respond

  1416. to your word today.

  1417. So,

  1418. during this time,

  1419. as we sing together,

  1420. you think about

1421. how you need to respond

  1422. to the challenge

  1423. of God's word

  1424. today.

  1425. All right, Sam.

  1426. Thank you.
