  1. All right, would you take the Word of God with me and turn to the book of Philippians?

  2. Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  3. I am preaching an entire series of sermons in one day today.

  4. I don't know why y'all laughing.

  5. We will get out of here before 6 o'clock tonight, okay?

  6. What time is the Super Bowl? 5? 5.30?

  7. We'll get out of here before then, okay?

  8. I'm kidding. We should be out around the normal time today.

  9. And actually, we have a lunch for Discovering First Baptist.

  10. Some of you received an invitation to that, so make sure you don't run out of here without coming to our lunch.

  11. That is for, specifically, some of the guests we've been having with us recently,

  12. some newer members to learn about our church, meet the staff, etc.

  13. So if you received an invitation to that, I want to remind you about our Discovering First Baptist lunch right after the service.

  14. That's at the Fellowship Hall toward the back of the building there.

  15. Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  16. We're going to be looking specifically toward the end of the chapter.

  17. But before we get into that,

  18. I want to...

  19. This really kind of is a series of sermons wrapped up in one sermon here.

  20. So we're going to just touch on it lightly,

  21. but I think it really ties in with the series we just concluded

  22. from Matthew's Gospel about salt and light.

  23. Talking, drawing from the Sermon on the Mount that Jesus preached.

  24. Probably the most famous sermon ever preached on this earth.

  25. And we took one of the core truths from it,

  26. that God called us to be salt and light.

  27. And that's who we are as a church.

  28. We are the salt of the earth.

  29. We are the light of the world.

  30. And we covered that the last four Sundays.

  31. That's available on the First Baptist Henrietta YouTube channel

  32. if you'd like to get caught up on that.

  33. But before we get into it,

  34. let's look down at Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  35. The subject we're talking about today...

  36. I don't know if I can get this to work.

  37. How many of y'all were here on Wednesday night?

  38. You remember my clicker wouldn't work?

  39. It's still not working.

  40. There we go.

  41. It worked.

  42. It worked.

  43. There we go.

  44. All right.

  45. The subject...

  46. I think I had slid the...

  47. It's usually user error.

  48. It's not usually the guys up there.

  49. Matt's laughing.

  50. He's like, yeah, he's right.

  51. It is user error.

  52. The subject we're talking about today

  53. draws straight from Philippians 1 and verse 27.

  54. That's these two words,

  55. striving together.

  56. Striving together.

  57. So,

  58. I want to

  59. focus primarily on that verse,

  60. verse 27.

  61. But for the context of it,

  62. let's read the whole chapter together.

  63. And so,

  64. out of respect for God's word,

  65. if you're able to join me in standing,

  66. would you do so now?

  67. I know we've been up and down a little bit

  68. during the service,

  69. but let's stand one more time together,

  70. if you can,

  71. and let's read Philippians chapter 1,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  72. verse...

  73. Beginning in verse 1,

  74. together.

  75. I'm reading this time from the English Standard Version.

  76. Actually, I believe I'm reading from the NIV on this one,

  77. so I apologize for that.

  78. There are many...

  79. Tell you what.

  80. How many of you,

  81. if you happen to know what translation of the Bible

  82. you're looking at right now,

  83. would you shout it out?

  84. Ready?

  85. One, two, three.

  86. Yeah, you hear all those different kinds?

  87. That's all right.

  88. There's nothing wrong with that at all.

  89. God has preserved His word

  90. in the English language

  91. for generation after generation after generation

  92. through different Bibles,

  93. the Geneva Bible,

  94. the King James Bible,

  95. the Wycliffe Bible.

  96. There's all kinds of Bibles

  97. that have come up

  98. since God's word was translated

  99. into the English language,

  100. and we're thankful for all of them.

  101. Many...

  102. Some of them may be a little far afield

  103. from the original manuscripts that were found,

  104. but normally the ones you'll find at Mardell's

  105. or at a Christian bookstore

  106. are just fine,

  107. and we'll say more or less the same thing,

  108. maybe just slightly different language.

  109. So let's read it together.

  110. I'm reading out of the NIV.

  111. Paul and Timothy,

  112. servants of Jesus Christ,

  113. to all God's holy people

  114. in Christ Jesus at Philippi,

  115. together with the overseers and deacons,

  116. grace and peace to you

  117. from God,

  118. our Father,

  119. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  120. Verse 3.

  121. I thank my God

  122. every time I remember you.

  123. Anybody say that's me?

  124. People thank their God

  125. every time they think of me.

  126. Anybody?

  127. No, nobody's bold enough

  128. to raise their hand.

  129. That was apparently

  130. the testimony of this church,

  131. and how special is that?

  132. It's actually one of the early sermons

  133. I preached at this church

  134. in my tenure here

  135. was about this church

  136. and their unique reputation.

  137. In the mind of Paul,

  138. he was able to thank God

  139. every time he remembered them.

  140. Verse 4.

  141. In all my prayers for all of you,

  142. I always pray with joy

  143. because of your partnership

  144. in the gospel

  145. from the first day until now.

  146. You see why he was so pleased

  147. to think of them?

  148. Why he had so much joy

  149. filling his heart

  150. when he prayed for this church?

  151. It was because they partnered

  152. with him in the gospel.

  153. What is the gospel?

  154. It's a word that simply means

  155. good news.

  156. Back in the old days,

  157. you would say

  158. there's a Roman general

  159. coming back to Rome

  160. from a far land,

  161. and he's bringing the gospel

  162. of victories

  163. in his battles

  164. with the Roman armies.

  165. So he would bring back

  166. the good news

  167. back to his home country.

  168. That is exactly

  169. what Jesus did for us.

  170. He went to a far country,

  171. and he fought a battle

  172. on our behalf,

  173. and he brings back

  174. good news of victory over sin.

  175. That's why we call it

  176. the good news.

  177. That's why we call it

  178. the gospel.

  179. It's the story

  180. that you and I were sinners,

  181. we were prisoners of sin,

  182. we were brought up in sin,

  183. born in sin,

  184. had no way to escape it,

  185. but Jesus came

  186. and brought us victory.

  187. He laid down his life,

  188. he fought the battle,

  189. he willingly sacrificed himself

  190. on a cross

  191. to pay that penalty of sin,

  192. and because he did that,

  193. you and I now

  194. have an opportunity

  195. to be saved,

  196. to find freedom,

  197. to find victory

  198. because of this gospel.

  199. So that's why we have churches.

  200. That's why we sing

  201. songs of praise.

  202. That's why we go out

  203. and tell this good news

  204. to other people,

  205. and when we partner together

  206. in that,

  207. it brings great joy

  208. to all of us.

  209. So that's what Paul was saying.

  210. It brings great joy to me

  211. because of your partnership

  212. in getting this gospel out

  213. from the first day

  214. until now.

  215. Being confident in this,

  216. verse 6,

  217. that he who began

  218. a good work in you

  219. will carry it on

  220. to completion

  221. until the day

  222. of Christ Jesus.

  223. Y'all, there's a lot

  224. we could stop along

  225. through this passage

  226. and spend the rest

  227. of our time together

  228. talking about,

  229. but I'm trying to give you

  230. the context

  231. as we get down

  232. to the end of the chapter.

  233. So he said,

  234. God began a good work

  235. in all of us.

  236. He's going to carry it on

  237. to its finish.

  238. We can thank God

  239. for that.

  240. He's not done with us.

  241. He's still working on us.

  242. Verse 7,

  243. And it's right for me

  244. to feel this way

  245. about all of you.

  246. Since I have you

  247. in my heart,

  248. and whether I'm in chains,

  249. sometimes he was arrested

  250. for preaching the gospel,

  251. or defending

  252. and confirming the gospel,

  253. all of you share

  254. in God's grace with me.

  255. God can testify

  256. how I long

  257. for all of you

  258. with the affection

  259. of Christ Jesus.

  260. Sometimes he was arrested,

  261. he was thrown in prison.

  262. Sometimes his journeys

  263. would take him elsewhere,

  264. and he would miss

  265. those Christians

  266. he would leave behind

  267. in Philippi

  268. and Ephesus

  269. and Corinth

  270. and all these cities

  271. that he would go to

  272. and visit these churches.

  273. Verse 9,

  274. This is my prayer,

  275. that your love

  276. may abound,

  277. grow,

  278. more and more

  279. in knowledge

  280. and in depth

  281. of insight

  282. so that you

  283. may be able

  284. to discern

  285. what is best

  286. and may be pure

  287. and blameless

  288. for the day of Christ

  289. when Jesus

  290. comes back.

  291. This is probably

  292. a good stopping

  293. point right here.

  294. So why don't we pray

  295. and ask God's blessings

  296. on our service

  297. and then we'll continue

  298. on reading

  299. the rest

  300. of Philippians 1.

  301. Lord, I thank you

  302. for your blessing

  303. on our church.

  304. I thank you

  305. for giving us

  306. these holy scriptures.

  307. I thank you

  308. for your sacrifice

  309. for us

  310. on our behalf.

  311. May everything

  312. we do

  313. in this service

  314. and through

  315. the work

  316. of this church

  317. be to glorify you,

  318. to grow your kingdom,

  319. to partner together

  320. with this gospel.

  321. And it's in Jesus' name

  322. we ask it.

  323. Amen.

  324. You may be seated.

  325. Thanks for standing

  326. so long.

  327. Let's pick it up here

  328. when he said,

  329. my goal for you

  330. is that your love grows,

  331. your knowledge

  332. and insight grows

  333. into God

  334. so that you can discern

  335. what is best,

  336. you can be pure

  337. when Jesus comes back.

  338. Verse 11,

  339. you can be filled

  340. with the fruit

  341. of righteousness

  342. that comes through

  343. Jesus Christ

  344. to the glory

  345. and praise of God.

  346. Now let's look

  347. at verse 12.

  348. Ready?

  349. I want you to know,

  350. brothers and sisters,

  351. that what has happened

  352. to me

  353. has actually served

  354. to advance

  355. the gospel.

  356. You know what that means?

  357. Get it out more.

  358. Spread this good news

  359. everywhere.

  360. Go tell it on the mountains,

  361. over the hills

  362. and everywhere.

  363. So he said

  364. all the bad things

  365. that have happened

  366. to me

  367. when the religious leaders

  368. didn't like

  369. what I was saying,

  370. when the government

  371. didn't like

  372. what I was saying,

  373. when the soldiers

  374. didn't like

  375. what I was saying,

  376. when I got shipwrecked,

  377. when I got snakebitten,

  378. when I got diseases,

  379. all these things

  380. that have happened

  381. to me

  382. have actually served

  383. to advance

  384. the gospel

  385. and as a result

  386. in verse 13,

  387. it's become clear

  388. throughout the whole

  389. palace guard,

  390. the guys that were

  391. guarding him

  392. and to everyone else

  393. around him

  394. that I am in chains

  395. for Christ.

  396. His reputation

  397. was intact.

  398. His reputation

  399. was strong.

  400. He was not suffering

  401. because he was

  402. a terrible man,

  403. had committed

  404. terrible crimes.

  405. It was clear

  406. to the prison guards

  407. and to everybody else

  408. that this man

  409. was suffering

  410. because of his faith

  411. in Jesus.

  412. So,

  413. verse 14,

  414. because of these chains,

  415. most of the brothers

  416. and sisters

  417. have become confident

  418. in the Lord

  419. and dare all the more

  420. to proclaim the gospel

  421. without fear.

  422. Y'all,

  423. this church

  424. existed in a day

  425. when you could not

  426. freely go

  427. and share your faith

  428. like we can here

  429. in America.

  430. And because Paul

  431. was arrested

  432. and locked in prison,

  433. he was so confident

  434. and refused to give up,

  435. refused to have his spirit

  436. broken

  437. or his will

  438. to accomplish

  439. God's will

  440. deterred,

  441. this man

  442. was like a dog

  443. with a bone.

  444. He just wouldn't stop.

  445. Couldn't take it

  446. away from him.

  447. And so,

  448. the church

  449. latched onto that.

  450. They said,

  451. we need that kind

  452. of confidence.

  453. We need that kind

  454. of spirit

  455. like Paul has.

  456. So,

  457. Paul's imprisonment

  458. was actually

  459. driving them

  460. all the more

  461. to proclaim

  462. the gospel

  463. without fear.

  464. Verse 15.

  465. He addresses

  466. some problems

  467. that have come up.

  468. He said,

  469. it's true

  470. that some people

  471. that you will hear,

  472. some preach Christ

  473. out of envy

  474. and rivalry,

  475. but others

  476. preach it

  477. out of good will.

  478. The ones

  479. preaching out

  480. of good will,

  481. these latter ones,

  482. they do so

  483. out of love.

  484. They know

  485. that I am put here

  486. for the defense

  487. of the gospel.

  488. The other ones

  489. that preach

  490. the gospel,

  491. preach Christ

  492. out of poor motives,

  493. out of envy

  494. and rivalry.

  495. He said,

  496. the former

  497. preached Christ

  498. out of selfish

  499. ambition,

  500. not sincerely,

  501. supposing they can

  502. stir up trouble

  503. for me

  504. while I'm in chains.

  505. He said,

  506. some people

  507. will preach

  508. the Bible,

  509. they'll preach

  510. Jesus,

  511. they'll preach

  512. the gospel

  513. out of bad motives,

  514. serving themselves,

  515. they have their

  516. own agenda.

  517. Verse 18,

  518. this was Paul's

  519. perspective on that.

  520. We recognize that

  521. sometimes in churches

  522. you go

  523. or you turn on

  524. the TV

  525. and you hear people

  526. supposedly preaching

  527. Jesus and you just

  528. feel like they don't

  529. have the right motives.

  530. It may not always

  531. be saying

  532. the exact truth.

  533. Verse 18,

  534. Paul says,

  535. what does it matter?

  536. The important thing

  537. is that in every way,

  538. whether from false

  539. motives or true,

  540. Christ is preached.

  541. And because of this,

  542. I rejoice.

  543. Isn't that interesting?

  544. Paul would not let

  545. himself get drawn

  546. into any controversies.

  547. While Paul was locked

  548. up in prison,

  549. there'd be others

  550. out there trying to

  551. make him look bad,

  552. trying to take his

  553. place,

  554. trying to get his

  555. fame and influence

  556. throughout these

  557. churches

  558. and this world.

  559. Sometimes it was

  560. for financial gain.

  561. They'd think that

  562. Paul's got to be

  563. making all kinds

  564. of money going

  565. around traveling

  566. to all these churches

  567. and preaching.

  568. Let me see if I can

  569. get some of that money

  570. while he's in prison.

  571. Some of it was

  572. influence.

  573. There was all kinds

  574. of reasons

  575. why people

  576. would be

  577. preaching

  578. Christ

  579. out of wrong

  580. motivations.

  581. Paul said,

  582. you're not going

  583. to draw me

  584. into

  585. tearing those

  586. people down.

  587. You're not going

  588. to start a war

  589. between me and them.

  590. You're not going

  591. to distract me

  592. from my focus,

  593. my calling,

  594. my purpose.

  595. He said,

  596. whatever their

  597. motivations are,

  598. I'm glad they're

  599. telling people

  600. about Jesus.

  601. I'm glad that

  602. God is using

  603. them regardless

  604. of what's in it

  605. for them.

  606. I'm glad that

  607. God's name

  608. is getting out.

  609. It's an interesting

  610. perspective that I

  611. think we could do

  612. well to learn from.

  613. And he said,

  614. because of this,

  615. I rejoice.

  616. And I will continue

  617. to rejoice.

  618. Verse 19,

  619. because I know

  620. that through your

  621. prayers and God's

  622. provision of the

  623. spirit of Jesus

  624. Christ, what has

  625. happened to me

  626. will turn out

  627. for my deliverance.

  628. God will use it

  629. for good.

  630. God will get me

  631. out of here

  632. when the time's

  633. right.

  634. God's not going

  635. to let all my

  636. work go to vain,

  637. go in vain.

  638. God is going

  639. to come through

  640. and he believed

  641. it.

  642. So verse 20,

  643. I eagerly expect

  644. and hope that I

  645. will in no way

  646. be ashamed,

  647. but now I will

  648. have sufficient

  649. courage.

  650. So now as always,

  651. Christ will be

  652. exalted in my

  653. body, whether by

  654. life or by death.

  655. For to me,

  656. to live is Christ.

  657. It's what it's

  658. about.

  659. To die,

  660. it's just gain.

  661. It's more.

  662. It's more of Christ.

  663. I get to go home

  664. and be in heaven

  665. with Jesus forever.

  666. How great is that

  667. going to be?

  668. You see how Paul

  669. was single-minded?

  670. He had such a

  671. laser focus on God's

  672. purpose for his life.

  673. Verse 22,

  674. if I am to go on

  675. living in this body,

  676. that will mean

  677. fruitful labor for me.

  678. But what should I

  679. choose?

  680. I don't know.

  681. I'm torn between

  682. these two options.

  683. I desire to depart

  684. and to be with

  685. Christ,

  686. and that's better

  687. by far.

  688. Verse 24,

  689. but it's more

  690. necessary for you

  691. that I remain here

  692. in this body

  693. with you.

  694. convinced of this.

  695. I know that I

  696. will remain.

  697. He's not going to

  698. end his life

  699. before it's time.

  700. He said,

  701. I will remain

  702. and I will

  703. continue

  704. with all of you

  705. for your progress

  706. and joy

  707. in the faith

  708. so that through

  709. my being with you,

  710. again,

  711. your boasting

  712. in Christ Jesus

  713. will abound

  714. on account

  715. of me.

  716. What's he saying?

  717. If I stay with you

  718. and pour myself

  719. into God's work

  720. for me,

  721. God's purpose

  722. for me,

  723. and become so close

  724. with Jesus

  725. through walking

  726. with him,

  727. working with him

  728. for your behalf,

  729. then your faith

  730. will grow

  731. so much more.

  732. And you're boasting

  733. and everything

  734. that you live

  735. your life for

  736. will not be

  737. about yourself.

  738. It will grow

  739. and cause you

  740. to be closer

  741. to Jesus Christ

  742. because of the work

  743. that God does

  744. through me.

  745. That's what Paul's

  746. telling us.

  747. So now we get

  748. to our key verse.

  749. It's been a little

  750. while getting there,

  751. but thanks for

  752. hanging with me

  753. through that.

  754. Verse 27.

  755. Whatever happens,

  756. here is his message

  757. to them.

  758. Whatever happens,

  759. conduct yourselves

  760. in a manner

  761. worthy

  762. of the gospel

  763. of Christ.

  764. Then,

  765. whether I come

  766. and see you

  767. or only hear

  768. about you

  769. in my absence,

  770. I will know

  771. that you

  772. stand firm

  773. in one spirit,

  774. striving

  775. together

  776. as one

  777. for the faith

  778. of the gospel.

  779. Some of the greatest

  780. words that Paul

  781. ever wrote.

  782. They clarify,

  783. they crystallize,

  784. they make very

  785. understandable

  786. and plain

  787. our purpose

  788. as followers

  789. of Jesus

  790. gathered together

  791. in a church.

  792. He makes it

  793. so clear

  794. what we are

  795. to be about.

  796. and not

  797. being frightened

  798. in any way

  799. by those

  800. who oppose you

  801. because this

  802. is a sign

  803. to them

  804. that they

  805. will be

  806. destroyed

  807. but that

  808. you will

  809. be saved

  810. by God.

  811. So folks,

  812. what it comes

  813. down to

  814. is the end

  815. of verse 27

  816. right there.

  817. Standing firm

  818. in one spirit,

  819. God's spirit,

  820. striving

  821. together

  822. as one

  823. for the faith

  824. of the gospel.

  825. That's what

  826. we are going

  827. to talk about

  828. today.

  829. And in the

  830. few minutes

  831. we have left,

  832. I hope that

  833. you leave here

  834. today with

  835. an understanding

  836. of what it

  837. means to

  838. strive together

  839. for the faith

  840. of the gospel.

  841. Let's think

  842. about that

  843. word strive.

  844. When I look

  845. at it,

  846. and I looked

  847. at it in all

  848. these different

  849. translations,

  850. and even went

  851. back to the

  852. root word that

  853. was written

  854. down originally

  855. in Greek,

  856. and looking

  857. at this,

  858. what does it

  859. mean when it

  860. says this

  861. word strive?

  862. Maybe your

  863. Bible says

  864. contend.

  865. Maybe it

  866. says struggle.

  867. And what it

  868. seems to be

  869. is that

  870. struggle.

  871. Because Paul

  872. understands that

  873. it's a struggle.

  874. We're fighting

  875. something.

  876. We're fighting

  877. an enemy.

  878. Something is

  879. resisting us,

  880. so we have

  881. to strive,

  882. we have to

  883. fight, we have

  884. to contend,

  885. we have to

  886. struggle.

  887. struggle.

  888. So, you

  889. know where

  890. my mind

  891. went?

  892. My mind

  893. went to

  894. Philippians

  895. 127.

  896. That's where

  897. it came from

  898. because that

  899. was the text

  900. we just read.

  901. But you

  902. know where

  903. it went

  904. after I

  905. realized that

  906. this is

  907. talking about

  908. a struggle?

  909. It went

  910. here.

  911. The struggle

  912. is real.

  913. Paul knew

  914. that, didn't

  915. he?

  916. He knew

  917. that this

  918. struggle that

  919. we're in

  920. is very

  921. real.

  922. Now, if you

  923. spend time on

  924. social media at

  925. all, and I

  926. can't say I

  927. recommend it,

  928. but you're

  929. probably going to

  930. do it whether I

  931. recommend it or

  932. not.

  933. I find myself on

  934. there sometimes,

  935. not as much as I

  936. used to be because

  937. I just don't have

  938. the time for it.

  939. But you will see

  940. sometimes memes or

  941. people using this

  942. phrase, the

  943. struggle is real.

  944. I don't know if

  945. that came from the

  946. millennial generation

  947. or what it was.

  948. That feels like

  949. something that came

  950. from the

  951. millennials.

  952. I is one, so

  953. I get it.

  954. The struggle is

  955. real.

  956. Now, normally,

  957. that's kind of

  958. said tongue-in-cheek

  959. about something that

  960. isn't really that

  961. much of a hardship,

  962. but it's kind of an

  963. annoyance, you know?

  964. Man, I ran out of

  965. coffee this morning,

  966. and I didn't know it,

  967. and so I got up,

  968. and I had to start my

  969. morning without coffee.

  970. Hashtag, the

  971. struggle is real.

  972. It's like, yeah,

  973. first world problems,

  974. man.

  975. Your life is really

  976. rough out there.

  977. Normally, that's how

  978. we use that.

  979. However, this life

  980. is a struggle,

  981. genuinely.

  982. There is real

  983. struggle that you

  984. and I have to face

  985. all the time,

  986. and it's not often

  987. the things that make

  988. us post on social

  989. media, but there is

  990. real struggle going

  991. on in our hearts.

  992. Anybody know what's

  993. happening at 530

  994. today?

  995. Y'all look quiet

  996. bunch, man.

  997. What's happening at

  998. 530 today?

  999. Super Bowl, there we

  1000. go, there we go,

  1001. there we go.

1002. We've got to cut the

  1003. air down and wake

  1004. everybody up.

  1005. I don't know.

  1006. Patrick Mahomes

  1007. recently reopened up

  1008. about the Chiefs'

  1009. journey to Super Bowl

  1010. 58.

  1011. Now, this year is

  1012. Super Bowl 59.

  1013. Last year, it was

  1014. Super Bowl 58, and

  1015. you know who won?

  1016. Chiefs, yes.

  1017. So glad for you,

  1018. man.

  1019. You did not watch

  1020. the whole entire game.

  1021. You were running in

  1022. and out some, man.

  1023. Listen, the Chiefs

  1024. won it.

  1025. They're trying to win

1026. three in a row this

  1027. year.

  1028. If you don't care

  1029. about football at all,

  1030. that's okay.

  1031. Just listen to this

1032. part of the story here.

  1033. Patrick Mahomes

  1034. opened up recently

  1035. about his team's

  1036. journey to Super Bowl

  1037. 58 last year.

  1038. revealing why this

  1039. championship holds a

  1040. special place in his

  1041. heart.

  1042. In a candid interview

  1043. with NBC Sports,

  1044. Mahomes painted a

  1045. picture of a season

  1046. filled with unexpected

  1047. challenges and hard

  1048. fought victories.

  1049. They didn't just coast

1050. to a Super Bowl last

  1051. year.

1052. If they can pull it

1053. off and beat a very

  1054. powerful Chiefs team

1055. and win this third in

  1056. a row, you can

  1057. definitely look at

  1058. their season and see

  1059. that they didn't coast

1060. to a Super Bowl this

  1061. year either.

  1062. But he's talking

  1063. about last season

  1064. and he says, this

  1065. interview says, he

  1066. didn't shy away from

  1067. accepting the team's

  1068. struggles, particularly

  1069. on offense.

  1070. Well, he's the

  1071. quarterback, so that's

1072. his part of the team,

  1073. right?

  1074. He spoke of the

  1075. constant effort to

  1076. improve week after

  1077. week, adding, this

  1078. year it was the

  1079. defense that kind of

  1080. led the team.

  1081. And the offense, we

  1082. dealt with our

  1083. struggles.

  1084. We had to continue

1085. to just work to get

  1086. better every single

  1087. week.

  1088. He even remembered a

  1089. moment that came after

  1090. the final regular season

  1091. game against the

  1092. Chargers.

  1093. Mahomes had a

  1094. conversation with

  1095. Travis Kelsey, the

  1096. tight end for the

  1097. team, surefire Hall of

  1098. Fame player, dating

  1099. Taylor Swift.

1100. For those of you that

  1101. don't follow football,

  1102. put it in context.

1103. Where he said, if we

  1104. win this one, it's

  1105. going to hurt those

  1106. guys, man, because

  1107. this isn't the one

  1108. we're supposed to

  1109. win.

  1110. See, the Chiefs have

  1111. established themselves

  1112. as a dynasty in

  1113. football, kind of the

  1114. team to beat.

  1115. Used to be the

  1116. Patriots under Tom

  1117. Brady.

1118. There was a day when

  1119. it was the Cowboys.

  1120. Feels so long ago.

  1121. So long ago.

  1122. But the Chiefs have

  1123. kind of become that

  1124. team, you know, they're

1125. the one to beat, and

  1126. that's why everybody

  1127. loves to hate the

  1128. Chiefs, because once

1129. you reach the top of

  1130. the mountaintop,

  1131. everybody's gunning

  1132. for you.

  1133. But last year, they

  1134. showed struggle.

  1135. They looked beatable.

  1136. Many times during the

  1137. regular season, it was,

  1138. man, I don't think it's

1139. going to be the Chiefs

  1140. this year.

  1141. So he said, I know it's

1142. going to hurt that team

1143. that lost to us, because

  1144. this wasn't supposed to

  1145. be our year.

  1146. This underdog mentality,

  1147. which would be unusual

1148. for the Chiefs, seemed to

  1149. fuel their playoff run.

  1150. As the postseason

  1151. unfolded, the Chiefs

  1152. found their rhythm.

  1153. Each game presented a

  1154. new challenge from the

  1155. Dolphins in the wild

1156. card, to the Bills in

  1157. the divisional round, the

  1158. Ravens in the AFC

  1159. championship, and finally,

1160. the 49ers in the Super

  1161. Bowl.

  1162. Yet with each victory,

  1163. their confidence soared.

  1164. Mahomes finished his

  1165. interview by saying, the

  1166. struggle was extremely

  1167. real.

  1168. That struggle, from a

  1169. football perspective, was

  1170. real for them.

  1171. That wasn't said tongue

  1172. in cheek, wasn't a joke,

  1173. their struggle was very

  1174. real.

1175. But it ended with that

  1176. scene.

  1177. It ended with that

  1178. picture.

  1179. I don't know what's

  1180. going to happen tonight

  1181. with this team.

  1182. I don't know what's

  1183. going to happen with

  1184. Mahomes, if he's going

  1185. to hold up another

  1186. trophy or not.

  1187. But that last year's

1188. Super Bowl itself was a

  1189. dramatic overtime affair,

1190. capped off by what is

  1191. considered one of the

  1192. greatest winning throws

  1193. of Mahomes' career.

  1194. The struggle from

  1195. beginning to end was

  1196. very real.

  1197. This word striving that

1198. we see back in Philippians

  1199. 1 and verse 27, let's

1200. look at it together here.

  1201. Whatever happens, conduct

  1202. yourselves in a manner

1203. worthy of the gospel of

  1204. Christ.

1205. Whether I come and see you

1206. or only hear about you in

1207. my absence, I will know

1208. that you stood firm in the

  1209. spirit.

1210. Can we say these two

  1211. highlighted words together?

  1212. Striving together as one

1213. for the faith of the gospel.

  1214. What does it mean?

  1215. It means fighting or

  1216. contending together.

  1217. It means fighting shoulder

  1218. to shoulder, or the

  1219. contemporary English

  1220. version says struggling

  1221. side by side.

1222. This is what Paul was

1223. hoping he would hear about

  1224. the churches he had

  1225. visited, specifically this

  1226. one here in Philippi.

1227. This is what you and I

1228. are supposed to be doing

  1229. in this life.

  1230. Struggling side by side.

1231. Is that how we would

1232. describe what we do as a

  1233. church?

  1234. This word,

  1235. synathleo, means to

  1236. struggle along with.

1237. That's the word that we

1238. get this word striving or

  1239. contending from.

  1240. To struggle along with.

  1241. Y'all, what I want to do

1242. is struggle along with you

1243. in our partnership in the

  1244. gospel.

1245. What I hope you do with

1246. each other is struggle along

  1247. together in our partnership

  1248. in the gospel.

  1249. That is what we're

1250. supposed to be doing as a

  1251. church.

  1252. The struggle is real.

1253. And we have an opportunity

  1254. to struggle together.

  1255. You're not alone.

1256. You're not on an island.

1257. Oftentimes it feels that way.

  1258. I've visited churches in

1259. rural areas of this country

1260. that felt like they were

  1261. alone, man.

1262. They're the only ones that

1263. really care and they're the

1264. only ones trying to do

  1265. God's work.

1266. And it's so refreshing to

1267. be able to go and tell

  1268. those churches, y'all,

  1269. there's churches all across

1270. your state, all across this

1271. country, and all around the

  1272. world struggling together

  1273. with you.

  1274. Fighting the same fight.

1275. And what we read in

  1276. Philippians here, striving

  1277. together.

1278. So we are the church.

1279. And we are together for

  1280. the gospel.

  1281. That's what we're here for.

1282. We exist to propagate or

  1283. advance God's kingdom.

1284. To get this message out.

  1285. That's what we're here for.

1286. If not, if we have no purpose

1287. left here on this earth, then

  1288. what's going to happen?

1289. God's going to bring us on

  1290. home.

1291. We're all going to get

1292. together in heaven and have a

  1293. beautiful forever more.

1294. But until that day comes, we do

  1295. have a purpose.

1296. And it's to be together for the

  1297. gospel.

1298. So how do we do this?

1299. How do we strive or struggle

  1300. together?

1301. Very quickly, there's some very

1302. clear and obvious points I want

1303. to share with you today before

  1304. we leave.

1305. Number one, we gather together.

  1306. We gather together.

1307. Well, hey, y'all got that part

  1308. down because you're here.

  1309. All right?

  1310. You're gathered.

1311. That's what the word church

  1312. means.

1313. The word we get that from in the

  1314. scripture is ecclesia.

1315. It means a called out assembly.

1316. People would use it in the local

  1317. governments back then.

  1318. They'd say it's time for a city

1319. hall meeting or a town hall

  1320. meeting.

1321. So let's get together into this

1322. ecclesia and let's conduct our

  1323. business.

1324. Let's gather and get this done.

1325. That is what God established for

  1326. the church.

1327. It's what he envisioned that the

  1328. church would be.

  1329. This called out assembly.

  1330. This gathering together of

  1331. believers.

1332. It's not about this building.

1333. We could do this in the park.

1334. We could do this in somebody's

  1335. house.

1336. But this place serves our needs

1337. and purposes well and we thank God

  1338. for it.

1339. But what it is is the gathering of

  1340. people.

1341. So that is what we're called to do

1342. and that's the first thing the very

1343. basic foundation for our struggling

1344. together is we've got to get

  1345. together.

  1346. We've got to gather.

1347. So how do we do that?

1348. Well, we have Sunday school classes at

  1349. 930.

1350. We have worship service at 1045.

1351. Family worship on worship Wednesdays

  1352. at 6 p.m.

1353. We have activities for all ages

  1354. following that.

1355. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday we have

1356. evening d groups that happen.

1357. So we have all kinds of opportunities

1358. for you to gather together because

1359. the struggle is real and we've got

1360. to struggle along side by side.

  1361. So we gather together.

1362. The Chiefs were together for their

  1363. Super Bowl.

1364. They gathered every Sunday and they

1365. gave it their all and sometimes they

  1366. would mess up.

  1367. Sometimes they would lose.

1368. But in the end they won.

1369. Now listen, you might hate the Chiefs

1370. and you might not care a lick about

  1371. football and that's okay.

1372. You kind of wish I'd quit talking

1373. about them and move on to the rest

  1374. of the sermon.

  1375. That's all right.

1376. Listen, we're going to do that.

1377. But today's Super Bowl Sunday so you

1378. got to just kind of put up with a

  1379. little bit.

1380. Listen, we may not always win every

  1381. victory.

1382. We might lose some battles along the

1383. way but we know that ultimately we

  1384. will hoist the trophy.

  1385. You know why?

1386. Because Jesus paid the cost for us.

1387. Jesus already won the victory for us.

1388. So if we keep struggling along

1389. together, we are assured of certain

  1390. victory.

1391. So, how do we struggle together and win

1392. the fights that we have to fight

  1393. every day?

  1394. We gather together.

  1395. Secondly, we grow together.

  1396. We grow together.

1397. It's not just about gathering.

1398. If you stop gathering, it's very

1399. unlikely you'll get to the growing

  1400. stage.

1401. Maybe at some point you were growing.

1402. Maybe that growing has slowed down.

1403. We have so many opportunities to

1404. gather but not just gather but grow

  1405. together in those gatherings.

  1406. Sunday school.

1407. We go deeper together in these

  1408. classes.

1409. You get to know one another a little

  1410. bit better.

  1411. There's structured environment of

  1412. teaching.

  1413. Sunday school at 930.

1414. We have classes for all ages from

1415. the littles all the way up to those

1416. who are not so little or little in

  1417. age anymore.

1418. Sunday school is a wonderful

  1419. opportunity.

  1420. It's been around a long time and I

1421. encourage you all to look at a

1422. finding a class if you don't have one

1423. at 930 to go deeper together.

1424. That is a wonderful way to grow.

1425. So starting point is an outstanding

1426. option to lay a firm foundation in

  1427. this Christian faith.

1428. What does the Bible teach us?

1429. What do we know about God?

1430. And how can we get to know him

  1431. better?

1432. What purpose does he have for my

  1433. life?

1434. And these are some basic foundations

1435. of the Christian faith that we're

1436. going to be starting next Sunday.

1437. So that's why I encourage you look

  1438. into that.

1439. See if you'd like to come join us

1440. upstairs room 201 for starting

1441. point Sunday sermon proclaiming and

  1442. applying the gospel.

1443. God called certain of his shepherds to

1444. stand before his people and proclaim

1445. the good news of Jesus and apply it

1446. not just read the scriptures but give

  1447. the understanding of them.

1448. That has to come from the Holy Spirit.

1449. So you have to look and listen and judge

1450. everything that I say by the words of

1451. scripture and then learn from it and

1452. allow God to grow you from what is

1453. preached what is taught in Sunday

1454. school what is taught in starting point

1455. what is preached on Sundays Wednesday

1456. workshops these are specialized Bible

  1457. teaching.

1458. We have it for the RAs and the GAs we

1459. have it for the teens we have it for the

1460. even younger ones who aren't quite old

1461. enough for RAs and GAs with their

1462. their what is that called worship

1463. friends and what's that mission for I

1464. think it used to be called mission

  1465. friends and now Nala's calling a

  1466. worship friends or something.

  1467. I don't know I can't keep it all

  1468. straight.

  1469. That's all right.

  1470. It's a wonderful class for a little

1471. extra little kids but there is all

1472. kinds of opportunities for specialized

1473. Bible teaching on Wednesday nights.

1474. So if you're not here on Wednesday

1475. nights and you don't have a valid

1476. reason not to be pray about and talk

1477. about coming and joining us on Wednesday

1478. nights God is working here in our

1479. church all throughout this campus on

  1480. Wednesday nights and that's a great

1481. opportunity to grow together as a whole

  1482. family.

1483. It's not just a class for adults or a

1484. class for kids or teens it's all of us

1485. together worshiping together in here

1486. and then we split off and we can all

1487. grow together from our Wednesday night

1488. time and then discipleship groups.

  1489. It's a wonderful opportunity to grow

  1490. together.

  1491. It's slightly a different vibe from

  1492. Sunday school.

1493. Both are necessary and both are

1494. important but discipleship groups are

1495. we call them d groups are more about

1496. community and sharpening each other and

1497. we will maybe study through a book of

1498. the Bible or study through a book about

1499. the Bible or whatever the curriculum

1500. might be for that that group each one

1501. decides their own right now.

1502. But these are wonderful opportunities to

1503. get to know each other to let the the

1504. walls drop to let trust start to build and

1505. we'll talk about that more in just a

  1506. moment.

1507. But growing together say man I can I can

  1508. read the Bible.

1509. I've got everything I need right here.

1510. Why do I need to go do it with other

  1511. people around?

1512. Because if you've read the Bible then you

1513. know a verse that says iron sharpens what?

  1514. Iron.

  1515. We sharpen one another.

1516. God determined because he knew us because

  1517. he created us.

1518. He set this whole thing up.

1519. He knew that we would need each other in

  1520. order to grow well.

1521. You can grow a little bit by yourself.

1522. You can grow a whole lot more together

1523. because that's how God designed it.

1524. So if you want to take what he designed

1525. and do it your own way you're never

1526. going to see the results that he planned

  1527. to give you.

1528. You've got to follow his recipe.

1529. So we gather together for the purpose of

  1530. growing together.

  1531. Go to these dGroups.

1532. We went to one on Wednesday night this

1533. last semester at the Clark's house.

1534. And I can tell you I know everyone in

1535. that group so much better now than I did

  1536. when we started.

1537. We've shared things that I would never

1538. have known had we not been in that dGroup

  1539. together.

  1540. We prayed for things.

  1541. Talked about things.

1542. We exposed vulnerability struggles in our

  1543. own lives.

1544. Talking about faith over fear in our group.

1545. This is an opportunity for growth that

1546. does not happen outside of Christian

  1547. community.

1548. So pray and seek God's face.

1549. How can I grow together?

1550. How can I see the opportunities that are

1551. right in front of me that I could grow

  1552. together?

  1553. Take that next step.

  1554. One to gather together.

  1555. Two to grow together.

1556. And then third we give together.

  1557. We give together.

  1558. Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 15 and 16.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

1559. Look carefully then how you walk.

1560. Not as unwise but as wise.

1561. Making the best use of the what?

  1562. Time.

1563. So that's one thing we give.

  1564. We give our time.

1565. We give our time to the Lord.

1566. Say God I have a lot going on.

1567. Especially if you've got kids.

1568. How many of your kids are not involved in

1569. anything that ever takes you away or ties you

  1570. up for anything.

  1571. I don't think there's a soul in here that

  1572. could raise their hand.

1573. Kids are always involved in stuff.

  1574. And that's a good thing.

1575. Keeps them out of trouble.

  1576. Right?

1577. But it also can tie up your time.

1578. So you've got to be very intentional in

1579. giving your time to the Lord.

1580. Because everybody's going to be coming for

  1581. your time.

  1582. Your family.

  1583. Your family.

  1584. The school.

  1585. Your work.

  1586. Your friends.

  1587. Your neighbors.

  1588. The government sometimes.

  1589. Yourself.

  1590. Your own desires.

  1591. Passions.

  1592. Weaknesses.

1593. It will all be coming for your time.

1594. And usually who loses out on your time

  1595. is the Lord.

1596. That should be the first fruits.

1597. We've got to look wisely at our schedule

1598. and how we walk every day

1599. and make the best use of our time.

1600. Say number one, I've got to make sure

1601. my family's taken care of.

1602. I've got to make sure they're safe,

  1603. healthy, provided for.

1604. But I've got to also give my time to the Lord.

1605. What does he want from me today?

1606. Maybe there's a conversation he wants me to have.

1607. Maybe there's a group he wants me to attend.

1608. Maybe there's a gathering of the church

1609. I need to make sure we're at.

1610. Because I understand we've got to gather together.

1611. We've got to grow together.

  1612. And we give together.

1613. We give our time together.

1614. If it was only a very few who gave their time,

1615. this church would not be able to be

1616. the church that it is today.

1617. And if there are not more

1618. who are willing to give their time,

1619. then this church will never be the church

1620. that God wants it to be tomorrow.

1621. So we've got to together

1622. make the best use of our time.

  1623. 1 Peter chapter 4 and verse 10.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

1624. Each of you should use

1625. whatever gift you have received.

  1626. To do what?

  1627. To serve others.

1628. As faithful stewards of God's grace.

  1629. So we have talents.

1630. We have time to give,

1631. but we also have talents to give.

1632. How many of y'all think

1633. you are just super talented?

1634. You're all too scared to raise your hand.

  1635. Thank you, Harlan.

1636. We all know you're talented, man.

  1637. Listen, I appreciate somebody.

  1638. Yes, Tripp.

  1639. Yes, Bo.

  1640. Love you guys.

  1641. You're awesome.

  1642. Tripp's talented.

1643. I'm not sure about Bo.

  1644. He takes after me.

  1645. I'm kidding, dude.

  1646. You're super talented too.

  1647. Look, truth is,

1648. every one of you should be raising your hand.

  1649. You know why?

1650. You may not be talented

1651. at the things you wish you were talented at,

  1652. but the truth is,

1653. God has given you talents,

1654. and he's given you all you need

1655. to use that talent for his glory.

1656. That talent might be listening to somebody talk.

1657. The talent might be praying for somebody.

1658. The talent might be thinking kind thoughts

  1659. about somebody else

1660. that then turn into actions of kindness.

1661. There could be all kinds of talents

1662. that you haven't necessarily been giving

1663. or using to serve others

1664. as faithful stewards of God's grace.

1665. God has shown enough grace to us

1666. to give us what we need

1667. to make a powerful impact for his kingdom.

1668. Why isn't a powerful impact being made?

  1669. Because so often,

1670. we don't use the gifts and the talents we have

  1671. to serve him,

  1672. much less others.

1673. So we give our talent together,

1674. we give our time together,

  1675. and then finally,

1676. we give our treasure together.

  1677. Matthew 6, 21,

  1678. where your treasure is,

  1679. there will your what?

  1680. Heart be also.

  1681. So.

  1682. What do you treasure?

1683. Well, normally we treasure money.

1684. Why do we treasure money?

1685. Because of what money can do for us.

1686. We think money is going to buy us happiness.

1687. We think money is going to give us

1688. that retirement that we need.

1689. We think money is going to allow us

1690. to go on that trip

  1691. or buy that toy

  1692. or whatever it is.

  1693. Kids are saying,

  1694. buy toys.

  1695. Adults buy toys too?

1696. Just go look at the amount of big trucks

  1697. or ATVs or whatever.

1698. You'll see the toys that adults buy, okay?

  1699. Boat, whatever.

  1700. There's nothing necessarily wrong

  1701. with those things

1702. unless they become God to you,

1703. unless they become more important

1704. than giving that treasure to the Lord.

1705. So we have to look,

1706. take a hard look at ourselves

1707. and say, where is our heart?

1708. Where does our heart lie?

1709. Where does the bulk of our treasure lie?

1710. That's where our heart is.

1711. So if you're not choosing to willingly,

1712. from a willing, happy heart,

1713. contribute some of your treasure

  1714. back to God's work,

  1715. then you're not investing

1716. in what will bring you God's blessings.

1717. If you invest in God's kingdom,

1718. the return on that is so much greater

1719. than any other investment you can make

1720. because it's an eternal return.

1721. Something that will never tarnish.

1722. Something that will never fade away.

1723. Something that will never break.

  1724. So God's kingdom is a place

  1725. for your treasure.

1726. It's a safe place for your treasure.

  1727. Say, I don't always like everything

  1728. the church does

  1729. or I don't always like everything

  1730. that Christian organization does.

  1731. Say, that's true

1732. because it's run by humans.

1733. But God takes our investment

  1734. into his work,

1735. however flawed it might be,

  1736. and blesses us accordingly.

1737. That principle is all throughout the Bible.

1738. If you give according to what God,

1739. that thing just came undone

  1740. and I apologize.

1741. Don't laugh at me, Nancy.

  1742. There we go.

  1743. All right.

1744. That little clip came off.

1745. That's what we give together.

  1746. We give our treasure.

  1747. Willingly.

  1748. Not because we're thinking,

1749. not because we're guilt tripped

  1750. into doing it

  1751. and not thinking,

1752. man, somebody's gonna be mad

1753. if I don't give my tithe this month.

  1754. That's not what it's about.

  1755. That's not even what

1756. will get God's blessings in return.

1757. He blesses those who give

  1758. from a willing spirit.

1759. So we give our time,

  1760. we give our talent,

1761. and we give our treasure.

  1762. We gather together,

  1763. we grow together,

  1764. we give together,

1765. and then here's the last thing.

  1766. We go together.

  1767. The Bible says,

1768. you will be my witnesses,

1769. Acts chapter one and verse eight,

  1770. in Jerusalem,

  1771. in Judea and Samaria,

1772. and to the ends of the earth.

1773. This is where we are supposed to go.

1774. So what does that mean?

1775. Do we all have to pack up

  1776. and go to Jerusalem,

  1777. Judea, Samaria,

1778. and the ends of the earth?

  1779. No.

  1780. We can apply that.

1781. Remember how we take scripture

  1782. and we read it

1783. and then we apply it to ourselves?

  1784. What does it mean?

1785. Jerusalem would mean our family,

  1786. our town,

  1787. our immediate area,

  1788. where we live.

  1789. That's where we go.

1790. What do we go to do?

1791. We go to share the gospel.

1792. We go to share the good news.

1793. We go to be salt and light.

1794. So we go to our family,

  1795. our town,

  1796. our area,

1797. then we move on to Judea and Samaria.

  1798. What would that be?

  1799. Our state,

  1800. our nation,

  1801. America,

1802. the people that we understand sometimes,

1803. the people that theoretically think

1804. and look like us as Americans,

  1805. as Texans.

1806. That's our Judea and Samaria.

1807. And then the ends of the earth.

1808. We can't forget about those

1809. who have never heard the gospel,

1810. those who don't have the same amount

  1811. of churches and opportunities

  1812. to grow together,

  1813. to gather together.

1814. So we go there as well.

1815. And that's through this idea

  1816. called foreign missions.

  1817. And we support it

1818. through the International Mission Board.

1819. We support what's being done

  1820. across our nation

1821. through the North American Mission Board.

1822. We support what's being done

1823. across our state in missions

  1824. through Texas Baptists.

1825. And we have a chance

  1826. to fulfill the command

  1827. that God gave us

  1828. all throughout.

  1829. Mark 16,

  1830. Matthew 28,

  1831. Acts 1,

  1832. to go together

  1833. to Jerusalem,

  1834. Judea,

  1835. Samaria,

  1836. and the ends

  1837. of the earth.

  1838. Now,

  1839. practically,

1840. how do you do that?

  1841. Because I'm pretty sure

  1842. y'all have heard before

  1843. from a preacher

  1844. or a teacher

  1845. to go out

  1846. and share the gospel.

  1847. But practically,

1848. how do you do that?

  1849. We've got invite cards.

1850. See the top picture there?

  1851. We've got little square

  1852. invite cards,

1853. have our logo on it,

  1854. have our service times

  1855. on the back.

  1856. Very,

  1857. very simple thing

  1858. to hand to somebody.

1859. You can go to the office

  1860. and pick them up.

  1861. If we run out,

  1862. we'll order more.

  1863. They're not that expensive,

1864. pretty easy to keep on top of.

  1865. We've got a budget line

  1866. item for it.

1867. And we can equip you

1868. with as many invite cards

  1869. as you need.

  1870. Men,

1871. stick a couple of them

  1872. in your wallet.

  1873. Or if your wallet's

  1874. not the right size,

1875. stick them in your pocket.

  1876. Ladies,

1877. stick them in your purse.

  1878. Have those invite cards,

1879. keep them in your car.

  1880. You never know

1881. when God's gonna give you

  1882. an opportunity

1883. to invite someone to church.

1884. Why do we care about

  1885. them coming to church?

  1886. Talk back to me.

1887. Why do we care about

1888. people coming to our church?

  1889. Exposure to the gospel.

1890. They'll hear the gospel here.

  1891. We know that.

  1892. We don't know

  1893. if they go to

  1894. just any church

  1895. around the whole area

  1896. if they're gonna hear

  1897. a clear presentation

  1898. of the gospel.

  1899. Some of them,

  1900. they will.

1901. And we thank God for that.

  1902. But we know

  1903. they will hear

  1904. the gospel here.

  1905. They'll have a chance

1906. to find Christian community here.

  1907. They'll have a chance

  1908. to grow together,

  1909. to gather together,

  1910. to give together,

  1911. and then in turn

1912. to go back out together.

  1913. We know the opportunity

  1914. is here for them

  1915. to become disciples,

  1916. followers of Jesus.

  1917. So that's why

1918. we invite them to come.

1919. Now that doesn't always mean

  1920. that they're gonna come

  1921. right away.

  1922. Sometimes it takes

  1923. a long established

  1924. relationship and friendship

  1925. before someone opens up

  1926. to you enough

  1927. to trust you

1928. to go try your church.

  1929. You know?

  1930. And that's alright.

  1931. Maybe that's how

  1932. it should be sometimes.

  1933. But we have opportunities,

  1934. utilities,

1935. tools for you to take

  1936. and go invite somebody

  1937. to church.

1938. And then that can start

  1939. a conversation

1940. that could maybe allow you

  1941. to share the gospel.

1942. How do you do that?

  1943. Man, your testimony,

  1944. your personal testimony

  1945. is a wonderful way

  1946. to share the gospel

  1947. with somebody else.

  1948. You know why?

  1949. Because they can't disagree

  1950. with you.

  1951. They can't argue

  1952. with your testimony.

  1953. Your story of how

  1954. you became a follower

  1955. of Jesus,

  1956. that's individual

  1957. and unique to you.

1958. They can argue with you

1959. about something in the Bible.

1960. They can argue with you

  1961. about something you believe.

  1962. But they cannot dispute

  1963. your personal experience

  1964. with Jesus.

1965. And if you share that

  1966. and use scripture

  1967. in doing it,

  1968. even if it's just

  1969. John 3, 16,

  1970. that is something

  1971. that God could use

1972. to touch that person's heart

  1973. and over time

1974. change their way of thinking

  1975. where they respond

  1976. to God calling them

  1977. into a relationship

  1978. with Him.

  1979. So your personal testimonies

  1980. are powerful.

  1981. I would have three

  1982. testimonies ready.

  1983. I would have the

  1984. 30-second version.

  1985. You know,

  1986. I used to be a mess

  1987. and over time

  1988. God changed my life

1989. and made me who I am today

  1990. and I'm not perfect

  1991. but He has made

  1992. such a powerful impact

  1993. in my life

  1994. and I give Him

1995. all the glory for it.

  1996. It's your 15,

  1997. 20-second version.

1998. No more than 30 seconds

  1999. because oftentimes

  2000. you don't have time

2001. to get into the whole story

  2002. with somebody

2003. of what Jesus has done for you.

  2004. But you might have

  2005. 30 seconds with them.

  2006. So have that ready.

2007. And then I would have

  2008. a two-minute version

  2009. of your testimony ready.

2010. Something a little bit longer,

  2011. a little more details

  2012. but it's still not

2013. going to bog them down

  2014. where they feel like

2015. they're never going to get

  2016. out of this conversation.

2017. And then I would have

  2018. the full story ready.

2019. If you have an opportunity,

  2020. you've got 10,

  2021. 15,

  2022. 20 minutes with somebody

  2023. where you could really

2024. go through the whole story,

  2025. the fascinating,

  2026. powerful,

  2027. divine story

2028. of what God has done

  2029. in your life.

  2030. That's your testimony.

2031. I would have three of them ready.

  2032. Go back,

  2033. talk to your spouse,

  2034. look at yourself

  2035. in the mirror

  2036. and tell that story,

  2037. all three versions.

  2038. 30 seconds,

  2039. two minutes

2040. and then the full thing.

  2041. And then finally,

  2042. who's your one?

  2043. This is an initiative,

  2044. a campaign

2045. that we're going to be

  2046. starting very soon.

2047. So in the next several weeks,

  2048. we'll be rolling out

  2049. this evangelism campaign.

2050. So this is to equip

  2051. our church

  2052. with tools

  2053. that will allow you

  2054. to go out

  2055. and share the gospel

  2056. with somebody else.

2057. What it boils down to

  2058. is you thinking through

2059. the people in your life

  2060. and choosing one name,

  2061. one face

  2062. that needs to hear

  2063. the gospel of Jesus

  2064. and then praying through

2065. how can God use me

2066. to help see that one person

  2067. respond to Jesus Christ,

2068. choose to become his follower.

2069. You'll hear so much more

  2070. about that

2071. in the weeks to come,

2072. but keep an eye out

  2073. for that.

  2074. Who's your one?

  2075. And start thinking

  2076. who is one person

2077. that I could share Jesus with?

2078. So our takeaway from today

  2079. is this.

  2080. We are the church

  2081. together for the gospel.

  2082. So let's ask ourselves,

2083. what are the next step

  2084. that I can take

  2085. in gathering,

  2086. growing,

  2087. giving,

  2088. or going

  2089. so together

  2090. we can actually

  2091. make a difference

  2092. for God's kingdom?

  2093. Everybody has something

  2094. they wish was different

  2095. about their life.

  2096. Everybody has something

  2097. they wish was different

  2098. maybe about this church.

  2099. Everybody has something

  2100. they wish was different

  2101. about America.

  2102. You can't make a difference

  2103. on your own,

  2104. but together we can.

  2105. God never designed us

  2106. to do this life

  2107. on our own,

  2108. but together

  2109. we can.

2110. Sounds like a political slogan

  2111. or something.

  2112. Together we can.

  2113. Probably has been.

  2114. But that is how

  2115. God decided.

  2116. So,

  2117. what about you?

2118. Would you bow your heads

  2119. with me right now?

  2120. What about you?

  2121. Is it gathering?

2122. Do you need to be more faithful

  2123. to the gatherings

  2124. of this church?

  2125. Is it growing?

  2126. Have you been ignoring

  2127. opportunities

  2128. to grow your faith

  2129. together?

  2130. Is it giving?

  2131. You've been holding back

  2132. in your time,

  2133. your talent,

  2134. or your treasure?

  2135. Or is it going?

  2136. Is there somebody

  2137. you can share

  2138. your testimony with?

2139. Give an invite card to.

  2140. Who's the one person

2141. that God could use you

  2142. to help change

  2143. their life?

2144. What is the next step

2145. in one of these areas?

2146. Maybe it's more than one.

  2147. Maybe it's gathering

  2148. and growing.

  2149. Maybe it's giving

  2150. and going.

2151. Whatever it is for you,

  2152. I'm asking right now

  2153. that God would speak

  2154. to you.

  2155. My voice isn't going

2156. to get you far enough.

  2157. God's voice

  2158. has to come through

  2159. and speak to you

  2160. right now

  2161. to show you

2162. what is my next step.

  2163. It's going to be

  2164. a struggle, folks,

2165. but we can struggle together.

  2166. We can strive together

  2167. for the faith

  2168. of the gospel

  2169. and that's what's

  2170. going to change.

  2171. That's what's going

  2172. to make a difference.

  2173. God, right now,

2174. I pray for this church.

2175. I pray for your people

  2176. that are gathered here

  2177. in this room today.

2178. I pray that you would

  2179. show us

2180. how to do this life together,

  2181. how to struggle together

  2182. side by side

2183. so our world is impacted

2184. in ways that only you can.

  2185. It's in Jesus' name

  2186. we ask it.

  2187. Church,

  2188. if there's somebody here

  2189. who doesn't know

  2190. Jesus as Savior,

  2191. you need to place

  2192. your faith in Him

  2193. for the first time,

  2194. please come down

  2195. and talk to me.

  2196. I'd love to have

  2197. that conversation with you.

2198. If you'd like to place

  2199. your membership

  2200. in our church,

  2201. let's meet down here

  2202. and talk about it.

2203. If you'd like to get involved

  2204. in a different way

  2205. than you have been,

  2206. let's sit down

  2207. and talk about it.

  2208. But whatever it is,

2209. you do business with God

  2210. right now

2211. as Jared leads us in song.

  2212. love you, Lord.

2213. Oh, your mercy never fails me.

  2214. all my days

  2215. I've been held

  2216. in your hand

2217. the moment that I wake up

2218. until I lay in my head

  2219. I will sing

  2220. of the goodness

  2221. of God.

  2222. and if you can

  2223. on this chorus

  2224. all my life

  2225. He's been faithful

  2226. all my life

  2227. you have been faithful

  2228. sir, if you need

  2229. to pray

  2230. all my life

  2231. you have been

  2232. so, so good

  2233. with every breath

  2234. that I am made

  2235. Oh, I will sing

  2236. of the goodness

  2237. of God

  2238. I love your voice

  2239. You have led me

  2240. through the fire

  2241. in darkest nights

  2242. You are close

  2243. like no other

  2244. I've known you

  2245. as a father

  2246. I've known you

  2247. as a friend

  2248. Oh, I have lived

  2249. in the goodness

  2250. of God

  2251. Chorus out

  2252. all my life

  2253. All my life

  2254. you have been faithful

  2255. All my life

  2256. you have been

  2257. so, so good

  2258. with every breath

  2259. that I am made

  2260. Oh, I will sing

  2261. of the goodness

  2262. of God

  2263. I will sing

  2264. I will sing

  2265. God, you are good

  2266. You're so good

  2267. We are not

  2268. We struggle

  2269. we mess up

  2270. but thank you

  2271. for giving us

  2272. each other

  2273. to struggle together

2274. Help us to be faithful

  2275. to gather

  2276. to grow

  2277. give and go

  2278. together

  2279. so your light

  2280. can shine brightly

  2281. in this world

  2282. in Jesus

  2283. in Jesus' name

  2284. we pray

  2285. Amen

  2286. Y'all, thanks for being

  2287. in church today

  2288. We will see you

  2289. next Sunday

  2290. Don't forget

  2291. Wednesday night

2292. and if you are part

  2293. of our Discovering

  2294. First Baptist Lunch

  2295. we will see you

  2296. in the back

  2297. through the전

  2298. through the

  2299. Thank you.

  2300. Thank you.
