  1. A beautiful song, and I hope the Easter service has already been a blessing to you. I know it has to me.

  2. But I would like you to open the Word of God with me. If you didn't bring your own copy, that is fine. We should have one in the pew in front of you.

  3. Someone else may grab that before you get your hands on it.

  4. So if you would like to look on with the person next to you or use the Bible app on your phone, that is absolutely fine.

  5. We will be looking this morning in John chapter 11. So if you would turn to John chapter 11.

John 11 chapter mention John 11 chapter mention

  6. While you're turning there, I wanted to just share a couple of heartfelt thoughts about Easter with you.

  7. Easter egg hunts are proof that your child can find things when they really want to.

  8. Son, go bring me my keys, and they're right next to him. Where are they?

  9. But if they're looking for eggs, they can find them anywhere.

  10. The best Easter is one spent with your peeps.

  11. How many of y'all actually like peeps?

  12. Now I know why they keep making them. Okay.

  13. How many of you had the Dr. Pepper ones?

  14. Yeah, those are the only ones acceptable in Texas, I think.

  15. There you go.

  16. And then I'll just share this last one with you.

  17. It's not meant to be an accurate portrayal of Scripture, but just take it for what it is.

  18. What do you mean?

  19. That wasn't you who just said good morning?

  20. I'm not sure if that's exactly how it happened, all right?

  21. But one can imagine.

  22. All right, John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  23. Would you turn with me there?

  24. John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  25. A man was sick.

  26. Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

  27. Martha was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume, wiped his feet with her hair.

  28. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.

  29. So the sisters sent Jesus a message.

  30. Lord, the one who you love is sick.

  31. So from this we realize Jesus was really close with these sisters and this brother.

  32. They'd grown up together and they were dear friends.

  33. So when Jesus heard it, verse 4, he said,

  34. This sickness will not end in death, but it's for the glory of God,

  35. so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  36. Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.

  37. So when he heard that he was sick, he ran straight to them.

  38. I was just seeing if your Bible said that.

  39. Mine doesn't.

  40. Y'all were paying attention.

  41. Good for you.

  42. No, he loved them.

  43. So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.

  44. Then after that, he said to the disciples,

  45. Let's go to Judea again.

  46. By the way, the last trip to Judea had not gone well.

  47. Rabbi, the disciples told him,

  48. Just now the Jews tried to stone you, and you're going there again?

  49. Jesus said, Aren't there 12 hours in a day?

  50. If anyone walks during the day, he doesn't stumble,

  51. because he sees the light of this world.

  52. But if anyone walks during the night, he does stumble,

  53. because the light is not in him.

  54. You'll notice a pattern.

  55. Jesus talked like that sometimes.

  56. When he was answering their clear questions,

  57. he gave slightly less than clear answers sometimes.

  58. But it was all leading to something that they weren't quite ready to hear yet.

  59. So, verse 11.

  60. He said this,

  61. And then he told them,

  62. Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,

  63. but I'm on my way to wake him up.

  64. The disciples said to him,

  65. Lord, if he's fallen asleep, he'll get well.

  66. Don't you think he needs to sleep if he's sick?

  67. They didn't realize he had died.

  68. And Jesus knew it.

  69. And that's what he called falling asleep.

  70. Jesus, however, was speaking about his death,

  71. though they thought he was speaking about natural sleep.

  72. So, Jesus then told them plainly,

  73. Lazarus has died.

  74. I'm glad for you that I wasn't there,

  75. so that you may believe.

  76. But let's go to him.

  77. Then Thomas, called twins, said to his fellow disciples,

  78. Let's go too, so that we may die with him.

  79. They don't know what's awaiting them

  80. when they go to Judea and get to Bethany.

  81. They don't know if the Jews are once again going to try to stone him.

  82. They don't know if they're going to have to stand up for Jesus in his defense

  83. and give their very lives for him.

  84. This is a tense moment.

  85. So what happens?

  86. We get down to verse 17.

  87. Then Jesus arrived,

  88. and he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  89. They had to walk, you know.

  90. The journey took a long time.

  91. Bethany was near Jerusalem, less than two miles away.

  92. Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary

  93. to comfort them about their brother.

  94. So a lot of these Jews are there

  95. who tried to stone Jesus last time.

  96. And as soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

  97. she went to meet him,

  98. but Mary remained seated in the house.

  99. Then Mary said to Jesus,

  100. I'm sorry, Martha said to Jesus,

  101. Lord, if you had been here,

  102. my brother wouldn't have died.

  103. We've seen you heal people with sicknesses.

  104. We know you could have intervened.

  105. You ever ask that question?

  106. God, if you had just intervened,

  107. this wouldn't have happened.

  108. Why did you choose to let this happen?

  109. Martha is experiencing that

  110. in the loss of her dear loved one at this moment.

  111. So,

  112. verse 22,

  113. her faith comes through strong.

  114. Yet even now,

  115. I know that whatever you ask from God,

  116. God will give you.

  117. Jesus tells her,

  118. your brother will rise again.

  119. Now we get to look ahead

  120. and see what happened in the story

  121. so we know what Jesus is talking about.

  122. But Martha doesn't know.

  123. So she believes,

  124. like she was taught from an early age,

  125. that there would be a resurrection of the dead

  126. someday far off in the future

  127. when God would raise up those

  128. who were his children

  129. who had gone before.

  130. And so she says,

  131. I know.

  132. I know he'll rise again

  133. in the resurrection

  134. in the last days.

  135. And Jesus said to her,

  136. you don't understand.

  137. I am the resurrection.

  138. He said,

  139. I am the resurrection.

  140. I am the life.

  141. The one who believes in me,

  142. even if he dies,

  143. will live.

  144. Everyone who lives

  145. and believes in me

  146. will never die.

  147. Do you believe this?

  148. This is a critical moment

  149. in Martha's life.

  150. And she says,

  151. yes, Lord.

  152. With as much faith

  153. as she can muster

  154. despite her grief

  155. in that moment,

  156. she says,

  157. yes, Lord.

  158. I believe you are the Messiah,

  159. the promised one

  160. that we've always been told about

  161. who would come

  162. and deliver us

  163. and bring us salvation.

  164. You are the Messiah,

  165. the Son of God

  166. who comes into the world.

  167. Having said this,

  168. she went back

  169. and she called Mary

  170. and she said in private,

  171. the teacher,

  172. Jesus,

  173. he's here

  174. and he's calling for you.

  175. And as soon as Mary heard this,

  176. she got up quickly

  177. and went to him

  178. and Jesus hadn't yet come

  179. into the village,

  180. but he was still in the place

  181. where Martha had met him.

  182. And the Jews who were there

  183. with her in the house

  184. consoling her,

  185. saw Mary gets up quickly.

  186. She runs out

  187. and they follow her

  188. supposing that she's going

  189. to the tomb

  190. to cry over her brother.

  191. Well, we got to go with her.

  192. We got to comfort her.

  193. Verse 32,

  194. as soon as Mary came

  195. to where Jesus was

  196. and saw him,

  197. she fell at his feet

  198. and she's so brokenhearted

  199. and she says,

  200. Lord,

  201. if you'd been here,

  202. my brother wouldn't have died.

  203. You see their faith.

  204. It's really strong.

  205. Their faith is really strong.

  206. When Jesus saw her crying

  207. and the Jews who had come

  208. with her crying,

  209. he was deeply moved

  210. in his spirit

  211. and troubled.

  212. Where have you put him?

  213. He asked.

  214. Lord,

  215. they told him,

  216. come and see.

  217. Verse 35,

  218. what does Jesus do?

  219. He wept.

  220. He cried.

  221. So the Jews said,

  222. see how he loved him.

  223. Couldn't he,

  224. who opened the blind man's eyes,

  225. also have kept this man

  226. from dying?

  227. Remember what these people did

  228. the last time he was around there.

  229. So not only do they see

  230. his display of emotion,

  231. think if he cared so deeply

  232. about this guy,

  233. why didn't he keep him

  234. from dying?

  235. Is he really who he says he is?

  236. I don't think so.

  237. Verse 38,

  238. then Jesus deeply moved again.

  239. You know what that word

  240. deeply moved means?

  241. It means he was angry.

  242. We see it twice here.

  243. In verse 33,

  244. Jesus sees Mary crying.

  245. He sees the family crying

  246. and weeping over their brother's loss.

  247. And it says he was deeply moved.

  248. Your Bible might say troubled.

  249. It might even say angered

  250. in his spirit.

  251. That is what it's trying to tell us.

  252. It says that Jesus was angry.

  253. Why was he angry in this moment?

  254. Well, you've got to go

  255. all the way back

  256. to the beginning of creation.

  257. You've got to go back

  258. to when God made the heavens

  259. and God made the earth

  260. and he made mankind.

  261. And what was one of the first things

  262. man did after God made him?

  263. What did he do?

  264. He sinned.

  265. He disobeyed.

  266. Right?

  267. Since then,

  268. and that's what we do too.

  269. As soon as we get the chance,

  270. we mess it up, don't we?

  271. We're experts at that.

  272. It all started way back

  273. with Adam and Eve

  274. and it's passed on

  275. in every single one of us,

  276. you and me.

  277. We look nice.

  278. We dressed up for Easter.

  279. I don't usually look like this

  280. on a Sunday morning,

  281. but that's all right.

  282. Neither do you, by the way.

  283. It's Easter.

  284. We all doll up for some reason.

  285. By the way,

  286. there's a family photo backdrop

  287. back there

  288. if you want to take advantage

  289. of everybody looks nice for once.

  290. But look,

  291. we make ourselves look

  292. as pretty as we can,

  293. but the truth is,

  294. you and I are on equal level.

  295. We're all sinners.

  296. We're all bad.

  297. At our core,

  298. we're not good.

  299. We're selfish.

  300. We're self-centered.

  301. We're unreliable.

  302. We're dishonest.

  303. At our core,

  304. that's who we are.

  305. We try to be better.

  306. We try to overcome that.

  307. We try to be there

  308. for the people we love.

  309. And you know what we do?

  310. We let them down.

  311. We let ourselves down.

  312. Jesus knows that.

  313. That is why he was angry.

  314. Because of the damage

  315. that sin had done

  316. on this world.

  317. I can only surmise that,

  318. but based on what he has taught us

  319. through his word,

  320. we can pretty,

  321. be pretty accurate

  322. and pretty sure

  323. that Jesus was moved

  324. and troubled

  325. and angry

  326. because this is only happening

  327. because of sin.

  328. These people

  329. would not experience

  330. this loss,

  331. this sadness,

  332. this sorrow,

  333. this heartbreak

  334. that was never meant for them

  335. when my father and I created

  336. this world,

  337. created them,

  338. and we're seeing

  339. the awful effects

  340. of sin.

  341. You want to know why

  342. the horrible things

  343. happen in this world?

  344. Sin.

  345. That's why.

  346. And it's awful.

  347. And God hates it.

  348. He's moved by it.

  349. He's angry at it.

  350. Moved enough

  351. to make a way

  352. to solve it.

  353. Move enough

  354. to give an answer.

  355. To give a way of escape.

  356. So,

  357. Jesus is moved again

  358. in verse 38

  359. and he comes to the tomb

  360. and it was a cave

  361. and the stone was lying

  362. against it.

  363. You know,

  364. a little rock

  365. was up against it.

  366. No,

  367. it was huge.

  368. It was huge.

  369. It would have taken

  370. multiple men

  371. to move this thing.

  372. It was huge

  373. covering the stone entrance.

  374. And Jesus says,

  375. remove the stone.

  376. How many days

  377. had Lazarus been dead?

  378. Four.

  379. That body was smelling fresh,

  380. wasn't it?

  381. Jesus says,

  382. remove the stone.

  383. The dead man's sister,

  384. Martha,

  385. told him,

  386. Lord,

  387. there's already a stench

  388. because he's been dead

  389. four days.

  390. Verse 40,

  391. Jesus said to her,

  392. didn't I tell you

  393. that if you believed

  394. you would see

  395. the glory of God?

  396. See, Martha,

  397. you didn't even know

  398. how big your faith was.

  399. You said the right thing.

  400. You had enough faith,

  401. but you didn't realize

  402. what you were saying.

  403. That what God

  404. would give me

  405. if I asked it

  406. could come to pass.

  407. So they removed the stone.

  408. Then Jesus raised his eyes

  409. and said,

  410. Father,

  411. I thank you

  412. that you heard me.

  413. He already knew.

  414. He already knew

  415. what was going to happen.

  416. I know that you always hear me,

  417. but because of the crowd

  418. standing here,

  419. I'm saying this

  420. so that they can believe

  421. that you sent me.

  422. And after this,

  423. he shouted with a loud voice,

  424. Lazarus,

  425. come out.

  426. And the dead man

  427. came out.

  428. Y'all,

  429. this had never happened before.

  430. Okay?

  431. And it's never happened since.

  432. Except for one moment.

  433. We're going to get there

  434. in just a minute.

  435. Okay.

  436. After this,

  437. he said,

  438. Lazarus came out,

  439. come out.

  440. The dead man came out,

  441. bound hand and foot

  442. with linen strips

  443. and his face

  444. wrapped in a cloth.

  445. Somebody was talking to me

  446. before the service

  447. and they said,

  448. this is a good thing

  449. that this didn't happen in Texas

  450. where you got a bunch of

  451. cowboys strapped up

  452. and they just were watching

  453. The Walking Dead

  454. the night before.

  455. Don't get me started on that.

  456. And they see

  457. the dead guy

  458. walking out,

  459. bound up.

  460. He knew the time

  461. and the place

  462. and the culture

  463. to do this.

  464. All right?

  465. It might not have gone

  466. that well in Texas.

  467. I'm not going to say

  468. who told me that

  469. right before church.

  470. But it was funny.

  471. All right.

  472. And he came out

  473. all bound up,

  474. head to foot,

  475. his grave clothes

  476. looking like a mummy,

  477. his face wrapped in a cloth

  478. and Jesus said,

  479. unwrap him,

  480. let him go,

  481. loose him,

  482. free this guy,

  483. he's alive.

  484. So,

  485. this was a great story.

  486. We're so happy

  487. for this family

  488. that lost their brother

  489. and then Jesus stepped in

  490. and he came back to life.

  491. but what about

  492. all the families

  493. whose loved ones

  494. didn't come back to life?

  495. Jesus didn't raise them

  496. from the dead.

  497. Because Jesus

  498. did not come here

  499. to extend our life

  500. on this earth.

  501. He didn't come here

  502. just to

  503. pull off

  504. the greatest miracle

  505. that we'd ever seen,

  506. raise a dead man back up

  507. after four days.

  508. I understand

  509. there have been

  510. medical marvels

  511. where the heart stops

  512. and some of you

  513. in this room

  514. I know have even

  515. experienced

  516. being pronounced dead

  517. and then

  518. God brings you back.

  519. I don't think

  520. any of you

  521. have been out

  522. for four days.

  523. That was a

  524. once in a

  525. history moment.

  526. So,

  527. why did he do it?

  528. He did it

  529. number one

  530. so the people

  531. would see

  532. that he came

  533. from God.

  534. But there was

  535. a second reason.

  536. Because he was

  537. signifying

  538. the main

  539. moment

  540. in all of history

  541. that was coming.

  542. And it was coming

  543. pretty soon

  544. after this.

  545. It's when

  546. once again

  547. he would turn

  548. death into life.

  549. Once again

  550. someone would die.

  551. Once again

  552. he would be buried

  553. in a tomb.

  554. The stone

  555. would block

  556. the door.

  557. And once again

  558. it would be

  559. rolled away

  560. at God's command.

  561. And Jesus

  562. would walk out.

  563. Would you

  564. go with me

  565. quickly

  566. to Matthew

  567. 28?

  568. While you're

  569. turning to

  570. Matthew 28

  571. I want to

  572. talk to you

  573. this morning

  574. about

  575. resurrection

  576. power.

  577. Folks,

  578. this is a

  579. different kind

  580. of power

  581. than you

  582. have.

  583. It's a

  584. different kind

  585. of power

  586. than I

  587. have.

  588. I've been

  589. going to the

  590. gym a little

  591. bit more

  592. lately.

  593. I've been

  594. trying to

  595. get more

  596. powerful.

  597. Highly mixed

  598. results on

  599. that.

  600. Okay?

  601. It's a long

  602. slow process.

  603. You might be

  604. a very

  605. powerful person

  606. in your world.

  607. You might

  608. have a lot

  609. of power

  610. at your job.

  611. You might

  612. have a lot

  613. of power

  614. in the

  615. community.

  616. Or you

  617. might be

  618. at the

  619. complete

  620. opposite

  621. end of

  622. the

  623. spectrum

  624. and feel

  625. very

  626. powerless.

  627. Everybody

  628. wants to

  629. feel powerful.

  630. Everybody

  631. wants to

  632. feel like

  633. they're in

  634. control.

  635. But I'm

  636. talking about

  637. a different

  638. kind of

  639. power than

  640. you or I

  641. could ever

  642. access.

  643. This is

  644. resurrection

  645. power.

  646. This is

  647. power over

  648. life and

  649. death.

  650. Matthew

  651. 28.

  652. Would you

  653. read it

  654. with me?

  655. Matthew

  656. Verse

  657. 1.

  658. I

  659. got to

  660. get there

  661. myself first.

  662. Hang on a

  663. minute.

  664. There we

  665. go.

  666. Matthew

  667. 28.

  668. And

  669. verse

  670. 1.

  671. After

  672. the

  673. Sabbath,

  674. as the

  675. first day

  676. of the

  677. week was

  678. dawning,

  679. Mary Magdalene

  680. and the

  681. other Mary

  682. went to

  683. view the

  684. tomb.

  685. For

  686. context,

  687. Jesus had

  688. just died

  689. on the

  690. cross.

  691. He had

  692. given us

  693. the ultimate

  694. sacrifice to

  695. pay for

  696. our sin.

  697. You heard

  698. the testimony

  699. from those

  700. two young

  701. ladies this

  702. morning.

  703. I believe

  704. that Jesus

  705. died for

  706. my sin.

  707. And this

  708. is what we

  709. had just

  710. seen happen

  711. in Matthew

  712. 27.

  713. So,

  714. first day

  715. of the

  716. week is

  717. coming.

  718. The two

  719. Marys go

  720. to the

  721. tomb.

  722. And there

  723. was a

  724. violent

  725. earthquake

  726. because the

  727. angel of

  728. the Lord

  729. descended

  730. from heaven

  731. and approached

  732. the tomb.

  733. He rolled

  734. back the

  735. stone and

  736. was sitting

  737. on it when

  738. they arrived.

  739. His

  740. appearance

  741. was like

  742. lightning.

  743. His

  744. clothing was

  745. as white

  746. as snow.

  747. The guards

  748. were so shaken

  749. by fear of

  750. him that they

  751. became like

  752. dead men.

  753. Yeah,

  754. if I saw

  755. this happen,

  756. I might

  757. become like

  758. a dead

  759. man too.

  760. I probably

  761. wouldn't say,

  762. did you say

  763. good morning?

  764. No,

  765. I didn't say

  766. it.

  767. Who's that?

  768. And what

  769. happened to

  770. that stone?

  771. Boom,

  772. I'm fainted,

  773. I'm on the

  774. ground.

  775. The angel

  776. told the

  777. women,

  778. don't be

  779. afraid because

  780. I know you're

  781. looking for

  782. Jesus who

  783. was crucified.

  784. He is

  785. not here.

  786. Let's say it

  787. again.

  788. Ready?

  789. He is not

  790. here.

  791. He has

  792. risen.

  793. That's right.

  794. Just as

  795. he said.

  796. Did you

  797. forget?

  798. Remember when

  799. he said,

  800. I can build

  801. this temple

  802. up and I

  803. can tear it

  804. down in three

  805. days.

  806. I can

  807. build it

  808. again.

  809. Wasn't

  810. talking about

  811. the building,

  812. he was

  813. talking about

  814. his body.

  815. Then go

  816. quickly,

  817. the angel

  818. tells the

  819. Mary's,

  820. and tell

  821. his disciples

  822. he's risen

  823. from the

  824. dead,

  825. and indeed

  826. he is going

  827. ahead of you

  828. to Galilee.

  829. You'll see

  830. him there.

  831. Matthew

  832. gives us

  833. this incredible

  834. account of

  835. something that

  836. completely

  837. changes the

  838. game.

  839. You can be

  840. reading the

  841. whole Bible

  842. starting in

  843. Genesis all

  844. the way up

  845. through Matthew

  846. 27, and

  847. then you get

  848. to Matthew

  849. 28, and

  850. it's like,

  851. whoa, wait

  852. a minute.

  853. It's all

  854. true.

  855. He actually

  856. did it.

  857. I caught

  858. the little

  859. hints maybe

  860. along the

  861. way, talking

  862. about the

  863. resurrection and

  864. saying he's

  865. got to do

  866. this, and

  867. then he's

  868. going to rise

  869. again, and

  870. he actually

  871. did it.

  872. That's

  873. something that

  874. you can't

  875. do.

  876. That's

  877. something that

  878. your power

  879. can't

  880. control, but

  881. there's a

  882. different power

  883. here.

  884. I want to

  885. share this

  886. quote with

  887. you.

  888. The resurrection

  889. with God

  890. the Father's

  891. way of

  892. authenticating

  893. all the

  894. truths that

  895. were declared

  896. by Jesus.

  897. You go

  898. back and

  899. you look

  900. at the

  901. Sermon on

  902. the Mount.

  903. You look

  904. at all the

  905. things that

  906. Jesus did,

  907. all the

  908. things he

  909. said, all

  910. of a sudden

  911. they become

  912. this little

  913. word called

  914. gospel.

  915. All of a

  916. sudden they

  917. become truth.

  918. all of a

  919. sudden they

  920. become something

  921. that we have

  922. to build our

  923. lives around.

  924. Why?

  925. Because he's

  926. God.

  927. Because he

  928. holds power

  929. over life and

  930. death and no

  931. one else does.

  932. Because then

  933. everything he

  934. said, everything

  935. he taught has

  936. been authenticated

  937. because he is

  938. who he says he

  939. is and he did

  940. what he said

  941. he would do.

  942. A couple of

  943. thoughts before

  944. we leave here

  945. this morning.

  946. Number one,

  947. resurrection power

  948. requires our

  949. faith.

  950. Resurrection power

  951. requires our

  952. faith.

  953. Back in John

    John 11 chapter mention

  954. chapter 11,

  955. we saw it

  956. happen.

  957. We saw the

  958. faith give way

  959. to Jesus'

  960. miracle.

  961. And throughout

  962. all of Jesus'

  963. time, walking

  964. around this

  965. earth, healing

  966. people, you

  967. read through the

  968. gospels, Matthew,

  969. Mark, Luke,

  970. John, you see

  971. all these stories

  972. of Jesus going

  973. and healing the

  974. sick.

  975. And you know

  976. what he says

  977. almost every

  978. time?

  979. Your what?

  980. Faith has

  981. made you whole.

  982. Your faith has

  983. healed you.

  984. And that's what

  985. resurrection power

  986. requires.

  987. If you want to

  988. tap in to God's

  989. power, the power

  990. that you don't

  991. have, that requires

  992. faith in him.

  993. Resurrection power

  994. requires faith.

  995. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  996. and verse 9,

  997. Paul wrote the

  998. book of Romans

  999. as a letter to

  1000. the church in

  1001. Rome and he

  1002. says this,

  1003. if you declare

  1004. with your mouth

  1005. Jesus is Lord

  1006. and believe in

  1007. your heart that

  1008. God raised him

  1009. from the dead,

  1010. there's that

  1011. resurrection power,

  1012. you will be

  1013. saved.

  1014. Why?

  1015. Why does that

  1016. save you?

  1017. We talked about

  1018. this subject a

  1019. little bit on

  1020. Wednesday night

  1021. in our worship

  1022. training, our

  1023. evangelism training,

  1024. sorry, on

  1025. worship Wednesday.

  1026. And we talked

  1027. about this.

  1028. Why does

  1029. belief that God

  1030. raised Jesus

  1031. from the dead,

  1032. why is that

  1033. what saves you?

  1034. Anybody want to

1035. take a stab at it?

  1036. Why isn't it being a

  1037. good person?

  1038. Why isn't it going

  1039. to church every

  1040. week?

  1041. Why isn't it giving

  1042. a certain amount of

  1043. money to the church?

1044. Why isn't it being an

  1045. upstanding member of the

  1046. community?

  1047. Why isn't all these

1048. other things we read in

1049. the Bible, why is it

  1050. belief that God raised

  1051. Jesus from the dead,

  1052. why is that what

  1053. saves you?

  1054. That's right.

  1055. Because that's

  1056. something we can't

  1057. do.

  1058. Only God can do

  1059. that.

  1060. So if you believe

  1061. that Jesus raised

  1062. from the dead by

  1063. God's resurrection

  1064. power and you

  1065. declare with your

  1066. mouth, Jesus is

  1067. Lord.

  1068. You know what

  1069. Lord is?

  1070. He's in control.

  1071. He's in command.

  1072. You're giving it

  1073. over.

  1074. Folks, y'all look

  1075. nice this morning.

  1076. You really do.

  1077. But look, some of

  1078. you are genuinely

  1079. good, upstanding

  1080. people and you've

1081. tried to be that as

  1082. long as you can.

  1083. But you've never

  1084. made Jesus Lord.

  1085. You've never done

  1086. this.

  1087. You might believe

  1088. that God raised him

  1089. from the dead but

  1090. you've never humbled

  1091. yourself to say, you

  1092. know what?

  1093. I'm letting go.

  1094. I'm giving it all

  1095. up and saying, Jesus,

  1096. you are now Lord.

  1097. And because of that,

1098. I'm so sorry to tell

  1099. you that someday

  1100. there's going to be

  1101. people gathered in

  1102. heaven.

1103. We read about it in

  1104. the scriptures and

  1105. they stand before God

  1106. and say, Lord, Lord,

  1107. you were my Lord.

1108. Lord, I believed in you

  1109. and his response because

1110. he knows you never made

  1111. him Lord.

1112. His response is going to

  1113. be, depart from me.

  1114. I never knew you.

  1115. I don't want that for you.

  1116. I don't want that for me.

  1117. I don't want that for my

  1118. family.

1119. So our heart at this

  1120. church and God's heart

1121. for you and for me is

1122. the same that we would

  1123. declare with our mouth,

  1124. Jesus is Lord.

1125. And while we are doing

1126. that, we believe in our

1127. heart that God raised him

  1128. from the dead.

1129. And what happens at that

  1130. moment?

  1131. We are saved.

  1132. Saved from what?

  1133. Saved from the punishment

  1134. of sin.

  1135. Saved from the power

1136. of sin and given this

  1137. new resurrection power.

  1138. I don't want to live

1139. under the power of sin.

  1140. I don't know about you,

1141. but it's hard to break.

1142. The power of sin is

  1143. really hard to break.

  1144. But resurrection power

  1145. can break it.

  1146. Resurrection power can

  1147. break your addiction

  1148. that not even your

  1149. husband knows about.

  1150. That not even your

  1151. wife knows about.

  1152. That not even your

  1153. parents know about.

  1154. Resurrection power can

  1155. break the chains of

  1156. fear of depression that

  1157. have been holding you

  1158. back and keeping you

1159. from being the real you.

  1160. Resurrection power can

  1161. bring light into your

1162. darkness that you try to

  1163. keep hidden so well.

  1164. There are historical

  1165. proofs of the

  1166. resurrection and we

1167. don't have time to get

1168. into them all, but I can

1169. share just a couple of

  1170. them with you today.

  1171. It requires our faith,

1172. but God knows how weak

1173. our faith is and so

  1174. there are historical

  1175. proofs that Jesus came

  1176. back to life.

1177. One of them is the

  1178. accounts of so many

  1179. that came after him.

  1180. Historians, writers,

  1181. some Christian, some

  1182. non-Christian, some were

  1183. not even followers of

  1184. Jesus.

  1185. I encourage you if you'd

1186. ever like to, and I can

1187. point you in the right

  1188. direction if you'd like,

1189. but to do a Google search

1190. or do a study, I can even

  1191. give you some resources

  1192. that would talk about

  1193. from a non-Christian's

  1194. perspective the historical

  1195. proofs that Jesus, this

  1196. man who was crucified,

  1197. actually was seen alive.

  1198. There are historical

  1199. proofs of his resurrection

1200. and that can help our

  1201. faith, but that resurrection

  1202. power must require your

  1203. faith.

1204. It must require you to say

  1205. whether the proofs are

1206. there or not, whether the

1207. world says he did it or

1208. not, I know in my heart

  1209. because God has revealed

1210. to me that Jesus rose

  1211. from the dead.

  1212. I make him Lord.

  1213. Number two, resurrection

  1214. power responds to God's

  1215. will.

  1216. What happened?

  1217. When Jesus said, Lazarus,

  1218. come out, what happened?

  1219. He obeyed.

  1220. He obeyed that power.

  1221. He had no choice.

1222. God holds the power over

  1223. death and life.

1224. You might feel like you're

1225. in a season of death right

  1226. now.

1227. You might feel like you're

1228. trapped and you can't seem

1229. to come out of it.

1230. God holds the keys to it.

1231. He has power over it.

1232. You make him your Lord and

  1233. you taste his power.

1234. Maybe you made him Lord at

1235. some point in your life, but

1236. you've kind of strayed away

  1237. from him.

  1238. You've kind of wandered

1239. away and it's time to come

1240. back and say, God, you are

  1241. my Lord.

  1242. You are my Lord.

  1243. Rescue me.

1244. Let me taste your power yet

  1245. again.

1246. It responds to God's will.

1247. John chapter six and verse

  1248. 40.

1249. This is the will of my

  1250. father that everyone who

1251. looks on the son Jesus and

1252. believes in him should have

1253. eternal life and I will raise

1254. him up on the last day.

  1255. There's another resurrection

  1256. coming.

  1257. Isn't that crazy?

1258. We've seen one back in John

  1259. 11 with Jesus raising

  1260. Lazarus from the dead.

  1261. We've seen another one,

1262. which is what Easter is all

  1263. about with Jesus himself

  1264. rising from the dead.

  1265. There's another resurrection

  1266. coming.

1267. When our time on this earth

1268. comes to an end, someday we

  1269. don't know when it's up to

  1270. God.

1271. We don't have to worry about

  1272. it.

  1273. Might be tomorrow.

1274. Might be a thousand years

  1275. from now.

  1276. I don't know, but Jesus is

1277. coming back and there will be

  1278. another resurrection of the

  1279. dead.

1280. You and I will be caught up

1281. together to meet him in the

1282. clouds and they will get to

1283. be forever with the Lord.

1284. Now we might already be dead by

1285. then and they will be with the

1286. ones that are coming down to

1287. receive all those who are

  1288. alive and still here.

1289. But there is a resurrection

1290. coming and we will be raised up

  1291. on the last day.

  1292. That's God's will.

1293. And we must always obey God's

  1294. will.

1295. The dead have no choice but to

1296. rise to life when God speaks

  1297. it.

1298. Darkness has no choice but to

1299. flee when God's will is spoken.

1300. It has no power over resurrection

  1301. power.

  1302. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1303. Would you turn there?

1304. It's our final passage for you to

  1305. turn.

  1306. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

1307. If you'd like to just listen,

  1308. that's fine too.

  1309. We're just going to read a

  1310. couple verses.

  1311. Ephesians 1 verse 19.

    Ephesians 1:19

1312. For sake of time, I'm going to

1313. go ahead and read Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:19

  1314. 1 verse 19.

1315. I'm going to back up and read

  1316. 18 for you.

  1317. I pray.

1318. Paul's writing this one to

1319. another church in Ephesus and

1320. he says, I pray that the eyes

1321. of your heart may be

  1322. enlightened.

1323. By the way, Paul himself is

  1324. another historical proof of

  1325. Jesus' resurrection.

1326. He wasn't there when it

  1327. happened.

1328. But God himself stopped him on

1329. the road to a place called

  1330. Damascus.

1331. Stopped him in his tracks and

  1332. completely changed his life.

  1333. Completely rerouted his life

1334. instead of being the axe man,

1335. the hit man for the government

1336. with a license to kill and going

  1337. out and hunting illegal

  1338. Christians.

1339. Because that was illegal back

  1340. then.

1341. We couldn't do then what we do

1342. today, meeting in church like

  1343. this.

1344. And Paul was the hatchet man for

1345. the government to go hunt them

1346. down and bring them to a bloody

  1347. justice.

1348. God stopped him in his tracks and

  1349. converted him that day.

1350. Revealed him and that he tasted

1351. resurrection power like he had

1352. never known or believed in before.

1353. And all of a sudden, Paul became the

1354. most dogmatic, the most public,

1355. the most dedicated, and loud

1356. proponent of faith in Jesus Christ.

  1357. Became his follower.

1358. Even though he wasn't one of the

  1359. original twelve.

1360. Yet another proof of the power of

  1361. Jesus' resurrection.

1362. So this guy then is writing all

1363. these letters to these churches

1364. as God uses him over the years.

  1365. And he says,

1366. I pray that the eyes of your

1367. hearts may be enlightened so that

1368. you may know what is the hope of

  1369. his calling.

1370. What is the wealth of his glorious

  1371. inheritance in the saints?

  1372. That's us.

1373. And what the immeasurable greatness

1374. of his power toward us who believe

1375. according to the mighty working of

  1376. his strength.

1377. Yeah, I would say his strength is

  1378. pretty mighty, isn't it?

1379. There is nothing our God can't do

  1380. even when facing death.

  1381. Verse 20,

1382. He exercised this power in Christ

1383. by raising him from the dead

1384. and seating him at his right hand

1385. of the heavens far above every

1386. ruler, far above every authority,

  1387. every power and dominion,

  1388. every president, every congressman,

1389. every boss, everyone who abuses

1390. their power, abuses their authority.

1391. He is far above them all.

1392. Not only in this age,

1393. but also in the one to come.

1394. And he subjected everything under

1395. his feet and appointed him,

1396. Jesus, as head over everything for

1397. the church, which is his body,

1398. the fullness of the one who fills

1399. all things in every way.

1400. When we are called as the church,

  1401. the body of Christ,

1402. you realize what that is?

1403. Jesus raised his body back to life.

1404. We are the living embodiment

  1405. of resurrection power.

1406. That's what the church is.

1407. That's what it must be.

  1408. So,

1409. I want to take you here

  1410. and we'll be done.

1411. Resurrection power renews our hope.

  1412. It renews our hope.

  1413. 1 Peter chapter 1 and verse 3.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

1414. According to his great mercy,

1415. he has called us to be born again

  1416. to a living hope

  1417. through the what?

1418. According to his great mercy,

  1419. he's called us,

1420. caused us to be born again

  1421. to a living hope

  1422. through the resurrection.

  1423. Of who?

  1424. Jesus.

  1425. Yeah.

1426. That's where we get our hope.

  1427. Because he's not dead,

  1428. he's alive.

1429. You didn't know you were going to have

  1430. to participate this morning.

  1431. He's not dead,

  1432. he's alive.

  1433. Amen.

1434. You'll hear some people saying this morning

1435. and if you've never heard it,

  1436. that's alright,

  1437. you're hearing it now.

  1438. He is risen.

  1439. He is risen indeed.

  1440. You said,

  1441. I knew this was a cult.

  1442. No, y'all,

1443. we just really believe it, okay?

1444. We just really believe it.

  1445. Because we have experienced

  1446. resurrection power,

1447. many of us in this room.

1448. We have tasted that living hope

  1449. and we know

1450. that he has caused us

  1451. to be born again

  1452. through

1453. the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  1454. from the dead.

  1455. That renews our hope.

1456. If you are without hope this morning,

1457. if you have a relationship

  1458. that seemed hopeless,

1459. if you have something in your life

1460. that just bears no hope,

  1461. may I introduce you

  1462. to a living hope.

  1463. May I introduce you

  1464. to resurrection power

  1465. and I can understand

  1466. why your situation

  1467. seems hopeless.

  1468. I can understand

  1469. like Martha and Mary

  1470. thought Lazarus' situation

  1471. was hopeless.

  1472. I can understand

  1473. how Jesus' followers

  1474. thought his death

  1475. was hopeless,

  1476. but I promise you

  1477. there is nothing

  1478. that is hopeless

  1479. when faced

  1480. with resurrection power.

  1481. Isaiah 43, 19,

1482. you don't need to turn there,

  1483. I'm just gonna

  1484. read it for you.

  1485. Look,

  1486. I'm about to do

  1487. something new,

  1488. a new thing.

  1489. Even now it's coming.

  1490. Don't you see it?

  1491. I will make a way

  1492. in the wilderness,

  1493. rivers in the desert,

  1494. life

  1495. in a tomb

  1496. and turn it empty.

  1497. I will bring death

  1498. to life.

  1499. I will bring

  1500. dry bones

  1501. back to life.

  1502. God can do

  1503. anything.

  1504. God can do

  1505. all this

  1506. and so much more.

  1507. You have every reason

  1508. to hope.

  1509. Robert Platt said this,

  1510. the resurrection

  1511. gives my life

  1512. meaning

  1513. and direction

  1514. and the opportunity

  1515. to start over

  1516. no matter what

  1517. my circumstances.

  1518. Maybe somebody

  1519. in this room

  1520. needs to start over.

  1521. Maybe you're looking

  1522. for meaning

  1523. and direction.

  1524. You've come

  1525. to the right place.

  1526. It's not me.

1527. It's not this church even.

  1528. It's Jesus

  1529. and his resurrection.

  1530. Easter Sunday,

  1531. there's no better time

  1532. than to renew

  1533. your faith

  1534. or maybe place it

  1535. for the first time

  1536. in Jesus

  1537. and his resurrection

  1538. and what it means

  1539. for you.

  1540. The power

1541. that you have access to.

  1542. You will receive

  1543. power

  1544. when the Holy Spirit

  1545. comes on you

  1546. and you will be

  1547. my witnesses.

  1548. You've got a room

  1549. full of witnesses

  1550. in this church.

  1551. But we must

  1552. not only

  1553. wear witness

  1554. of this

  1555. to each other

  1556. but to those

  1557. who don't know.

  1558. We must take

  1559. the power

  1560. of his resurrection

  1561. to the ones.

  1562. You know

  1563. what we're talking

  1564. about, right?

  1565. The ones.

  1566. Slip your hand

  1567. out if you know

  1568. what I mean

  1569. by the ones.

  1570. Yep.

  1571. Yep.

  1572. All over.

  1573. We're doing this thing

  1574. called who's your one

  1575. and everybody

  1576. is praying

  1577. for someone

  1578. in their life

  1579. who they want

  1580. so desperately

  1581. to meet Jesus.

  1582. follow him.

1583. We can be his witnesses

  1584. of resurrection power.

  1585. So our takeaway

  1586. this morning

  1587. are you missing out

  1588. on the resurrection power

  1589. that God

  1590. is offering you?

  1591. I hope not.

  1592. I pray not.

  1593. And if you are,

  1594. if you know deep

  1595. in your heart

  1596. that you are,

  1597. I pray that you'll use

  1598. these next couple minutes

  1599. to seek deeply

  1600. in your heart

  1601. number one,

  1602. am I a child

  1603. of God?

  1604. God,

  1605. not am I a good person,

  1606. not do I try

  1607. to go to church

  1608. when I can,

  1609. not do I try

  1610. to help my neighbor.

1611. Those are all good things.

  1612. There's a lot of people

1613. trying to do those things.

  1614. But have you confessed

  1615. with your mouth

  1616. that Jesus is Lord?

  1617. Have you declared

  1618. that publicly?

  1619. Do you believe

  1620. in your heart

  1621. that God raised him

  1622. from the dead?

  1623. is he your Lord?

  1624. Then if he is,

  1625. you have that

  1626. resurrection power.

1627. We don't always use it.

1628. Sometimes we miss out on it

  1629. when it's right there

  1630. for us to claim.

1631. Would you bow your heads

  1632. with me now?

  1633. God,

  1634. every heart in here

  1635. needs you.

  1636. Starting with me,

  1637. we are desperate

  1638. for you, God.

  1639. We're all busy.

  1640. We're all overwhelmed.

  1641. We're all distracted.

  1642. We're all hurting

  1643. in some way.

  1644. We're all broken.

  1645. We're all imperfect.

  1646. But Jesus Christ,

  1647. you hold the keys

  1648. to something

  1649. far more powerful,

  1650. the ultimate enemy,

  1651. and you've conquered him

  1652. time and time again.

  1653. Conquer him again

  1654. in our lives.

  1655. Conquer him again

  1656. in our hearts.

  1657. Let the wife

  1658. and the mom

  1659. who can't seem

  1660. to figure out

1661. what it's all there for,

1662. got hurt in her heart

  1663. that nobody knows about.

  1664. You be the great

  1665. comforter for her, God.

  1666. You show her

  1667. your power.

  1668. The busy man

  1669. who's trying to hold

  1670. it all together,

1671. not sure how finances look,

1672. not sure how relationships look,

  1673. got his own struggles

  1674. and demons.

1675. I pray that you would

  1676. have power over that

  1677. right now.

1678. That you would draw them,

  1679. that you would say,

1680. I am here for you.

  1681. You didn't just walk

  1682. in this morning

  1683. to check a box

1684. that you went to church

  1685. on Easter.

1686. You came to encounter Jesus.

  1687. You came to taste

  1688. his resurrection power.

  1689. And God,

1690. I pray that you would not

  1691. let my words be

  1692. what are echoing

  1693. in their ears,

  1694. but let your words,

  1695. I am the resurrection,

  1696. I am the life,

  1697. let that be

  1698. what takes root.

  1699. Church,

  1700. with that in mind,

  1701. our heads are bowed,

  1702. our eyes are closed.

  1703. I'm going to extend

  1704. one invitation to you.

  1705. Would you keep

  1706. your heads bowed

  1707. and your eyes closed

  1708. for privacy?

1709. If God's drawing you now

  1710. and you say,

1711. I want to respond to him

1712. and maybe for the first time

  1713. in my life,

  1714. I want to genuinely

  1715. make Jesus my Lord.

  1716. I want to become

  1717. a follower of Jesus

  1718. and taste his resurrection

  1719. power today.

  1720. If that's you,

  1721. would you just slip

  1722. your hand up now

1723. and I'll pray for you.

1724. So I want to choose

  1725. Jesus today.

  1726. Thank you.

  1727. Thank you.

  1728. Thank you.

1729. You can put your hands down.

  1730. Thank you.

  1731. God, you see those

  1732. who raised their hands.

  1733. Work on their heart.

1734. Draw them right now, God.

  1735. don't let them

  1736. walk out of here

  1737. without finding out

  1738. how they can become

  1739. your child.

1740. If you slipped your hand

  1741. up a moment ago,

  1742. please find me

  1743. right after the service.

1744. I'll be in the back.

1745. Would you come to me

1746. and we can go off,

1747. we can find a quiet spot,

  1748. we can sit,

1749. open the word of God

  1750. and just very briefly

1751. show you the simple way

  1752. of placing your faith

  1753. in Jesus.

1754. For the rest of us

  1755. in this room,

  1756. if you say there's

1757. an area of my life

  1758. that I'm struggling with

  1759. and I need God

1760. to show his resurrection power,

1761. I'm praying for that now.

1762. Would you slip your hand up

1763. and I'll pray for you too.

  1764. Thank you.

  1765. Thank you.

  1766. Thank you.

  1767. Thank you.

1768. God, I need his resurrection power

  1769. in my life.

  1770. There's an area

  1771. Satan's got a stronghold.

  1772. It's hard.

  1773. It's tough.

  1774. Thank you.

  1775. Thank you.

1776. You can put your hands down.

  1777. Thank you.

  1778. Thank you.

1779. God, I might have missed some hands,

  1780. but you saw everyone

  1781. and you know

1782. what's going on in their hearts

  1783. right now, God.

  1784. Move.

  1785. Show them.

1786. Let them hear your voice.

1787. Let them feel your peace

  1788. and then teach them

1789. how to run to you every day.

  1790. Choose you

  1791. over their own strength.

1792. Jared's going to lead us

  1793. very briefly

1794. in a verse of this song.

  1795. This is a time

  1796. you can sing along.

1797. You can keep your seats.

  1798. You can stand.

1799. You can come down here

  1800. at these steps.

1801. You can kneel and pray.

1802. If you'd like to talk to me,

1803. I'll be right down here.

  1804. This is a time

1805. for God to just do some business

  1806. in this church.

1807. Give us a couple minutes

1808. before we dismiss this morning.
