  1. All right. Well, folks, let's go ahead and take the Word of God and turn to the Gospel of Matthew.

  2. We are picking up a series that we started quite some time ago. I believe it was three or four weeks ago when we started this series.

  3. And then we had Texas Baptist Sunday with Julio Guarneri, the executive director, our special speaker.

  4. We had our Lord's Supper Sunday where we kind of devote the whole service to that.

  5. And then, of course, we had Easter last week.

  6. And so we are just now diving back into this brand new preaching series called Stories of the Kingdom, going through some of the parables of Jesus.

  7. So let's go to Matthew chapter 13. Matthew chapter 13.

Matthew 13 chapter mention Matthew 13 chapter mention

  8. This is the same chapter that we were in last time. We talked about the weeds and the wheat or the tares and the wheat.

  9. And that began there in Matthew 13, verse 24.

    Matthew 13:24

  10. So we are going to back up and go to the beginning of Matthew 13 and look at verses 1 down through 23.

  11. So today we're talking about the sower and the soil.

  12. For some reason, Carson, I don't have my remote.

  13. Mike gave it to me this morning.

  14. And somehow, some way between then and now, it sprouted legs and wandered off.

  15. So if you'll just kind of watch my slides and click through, thank you.

  16. I know normally I have control over that, but I have to give up control today.

  17. So there you go.

  18. All right, so we are talking about the sower and the soil.

  19. And let's begin reading in verse 1 of Matthew 13.

  20. Matthew 13 and verse 1.

  21. On the day Jesus went out of the house, he was sitting by the sea.

  22. Such large crowds gathered around him.

  23. He got into a boat.

  24. He sat down while the whole crowd stood on the shore.

  25. He did this a few times that we have a record of in the scriptures.

  26. Hey, look at you.

  27. Thanks, man.

  28. You're on top of it.

  29. Carson, you're off duty.

  30. You can take a nap like you usually do.

  31. I'm just kidding.

  32. He doesn't.

  33. He pays attention, y'all.

  34. I'm messing around.

  35. All right.

  36. So, Jesus is in the boat.

  37. He's teaching the crowd.

  38. They're all on the shore listening to him.

  39. And by the way, just a little side note.

  40. It has nothing to do with the sermon, but I always thought that was fascinating.

  41. Jesus, of course, the creator of heavens and earth, would know that sound travels so well across the water.

  42. And so the people couldn't press up against him.

  43. Of course, they didn't have microphones like we have today.

  44. And so he would get out in the boat and he would teach.

  45. And the sound would travel across the water.

  46. And they could all hear him.

  47. Just a neat little addition that I thought to mention.

  48. Verse 3, he told them many things in parables.

  49. We can just think of them as stories or illustrations that he was using to make a greater point.

  50. Saying, consider the sower.

  51. Or, if you're reading in the New Living Translation, listen.

  52. A farmer went out to plant some seeds.

  53. As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath.

  54. The birds came in and ate them.

  55. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock.

  56. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow.

  57. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun.

  58. And since they didn't have deep roots, they died.

  59. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants.

  60. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil.

  61. And they produced a crop that was 30, 60, even 100 times as much as had been planted.

  62. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.

  63. Verse 10, his disciples came and asked him,

  64. Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?

  65. He replied, you're permitted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

  66. That's why we call this series Stories of the Kingdom.

  67. Because these were all about the kingdom of heaven.

  68. But others, he said, are not permitted to understand.

  69. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given.

  70. And they will have an abundance of knowledge.

  71. But for those who are not listening,

  72. even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.

  73. So it's important to listen, isn't it?

  74. Did everybody hear that?

  75. Thank you.

  76. You got it.

  77. It is important to listen.

  78. Especially when it's coming from Jesus.

  79. That is why I use these parables.

  80. Verse 13.

  81. For they look, but they don't really see.

  82. They hear, but they don't really listen or understand.

  83. Verse 14.

  84. This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,

  85. When you hear what I say, you will not understand.

  86. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.

  87. For the hearts of these people are hardened.

  88. Their ears can't hear.

  89. They have closed their eyes so their eyes cannot see.

  90. Their ears cannot hear.

  91. And their hearts cannot understand.

  92. And they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.

  93. But blessed are your eyes.

  94. Because they see.

  95. And your ears, because they hear.

  96. I tell you the truth.

  97. Many prophets and righteous people long to see what you see.

  98. But they didn't see it.

  99. They long to hear what you hear.

  100. But they didn't hear it.

  101. Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds.

  102. Hey, we get this parable explained this time.

  103. Verse 19.

  104. The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the kingdom.

  105. And don't understand it.

  106. Then the evil one comes.

  107. Snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts.

  108. The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message.

  109. And immediately receive it with joy.

  110. But since they don't have deep roots.

  111. They don't last long.

  112. They fall away.

  113. As soon as they have problems.

  114. Or are persecuted for believing God's word.

  115. The seed that fell among the thorns.

  116. Represents those who hear God's word.

  117. But all too quickly the message is crowded out.

  118. By the worries of this life.

  119. And the lure of wealth.

  120. So no fruit is produced.

  121. The seed that fell on good soil.

  122. Represents those who truly hear.

  123. And understand God's word.

  124. And produce a harvest.

  125. And produce a harvest.

  126. Of 30, 60, or even 100 times.

  127. As much as had been planted.

  128. Would you pray with me?

  129. God I pray that right now your word would take root in our hearts.

  130. That we would not be like those who hear.

  131. And don't understand.

  132. Who see.

  133. But cannot comprehend it.

  134. Reveal to us your truth.

  135. Let it take root in us.

  136. And bear fruit in your name.

  137. And we'll give you the glory for it.

  138. In Jesus name.

  139. Amen.

  140. By the way.

  141. Thank you to the choir.

  142. To June.

  143. For providing such beautiful music.

  144. For us this morning.

  145. As well as your lovely voices.

  146. Y'all sounded great.

  147. Singing out there.

  148. Really enjoyed the music.

  149. Last Sunday on Easter.

  150. And again this morning.

  151. Let's dive into this passage here.

  152. In Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  153. Number one.

  154. The path and the birds.

  155. Right?

  156. The path and the birds.

  157. That's what we see.

  158. So let's back up.

  159. To verse 4.

  160. Back up to verse 4.

  161. As he sowed.

  162. The sower went out to sow.

  163. The farmer went out to plant seed.

  164. You might say.

  165. And as he planted his seed.

  166. As he sowed his seed.

  167. Some of it fell along the path.

  168. Apparently.

  169. This was whatever crop.

  170. That Jesus is hypothetically using.

  171. This illustration.

  172. As an example in his parable.

  173. Whatever crop this sower is going out.

  174. He's not carefully digging.

  175. And planting it in intentional spots.

  176. In good earth.

  177. He's just casting it.

  178. And seeing where it falls.

  179. In this story.

  180. So some of it fell along the walking path.

  181. And what happens?

  182. Did it take deep roots.

  183. And grow up big fruit?

  184. No.

  185. Thank you.

  186. Appreciate that.

  187. You're right.

  188. It did not.

  189. The rest of y'all were like.

  190. Does he really want us to answer right now?

  191. Just making sure you're with me here.

  192. That's right.

  193. He didn't.

  194. The seed did not take root.

  195. What happened?

  196. It just lay there.

  197. Doing no good.

  198. And what happened?

  199. The birds came.

  200. And ate it.

  201. Didn't they?

  202. The kids like this story.

  203. I like this story.

  204. Who are we kidding?

  205. All right.

  206. Verse 19.

  207. Jesus then gives us an explanation of what he's talking about.

  208. So skip down to verse 19.

  209. Listen to the parable of the sower.

  210. When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn't understand it,

  211. the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart.

  212. This is the one sown along the path.

  213. So, well, there's the bird.

  214. There's the culprit.

  215. The evil flying beast that ate up the good seed that was sown, right?

  216. He doesn't look all that bad.

  217. But listen.

  218. This happens, all right?

  219. When God's word is preached,

  220. sometimes it falls on ears that will never understand it,

  221. never believe it.

  222. And what happens?

  223. The deceiver comes along.

  224. Satan comes along.

  225. The forces of Satan in this world come along,

  226. and they snatch away the truth that was told.

  227. They might distort it.

  228. They might try to change it.

  229. They might try to use it to fit their agenda.

  230. Whatever it was,

  231. it's no longer the truth that was sown.

  232. That truth is now gone.

  233. And I hate to see that happen.

  234. But I've been on missions trips all around this world,

  235. and I've seen that happen.

  236. Where you go to a place that's in spiritual darkness,

  237. been to deep, remote villages in India,

  238. where they've never heard the truth of Jesus Christ ever.

  239. And you go and you sow the seed of the gospel,

  240. the good news of Jesus,

  241. and the people listen,

  242. and you can see some of that seed is falling on good ground,

  243. and ears are hearing,

  244. and they're understanding,

  245. and God is giving them that understanding,

  246. and they're responding to it.

  247. And then others, you see,

  248. it's just not making sense.

  249. And sometimes you even go back later,

  250. and you see that the devil has been at work.

  251. And he's snatched up the truth that was planted,

  252. attempted to be planted in some of those hearts.

  253. And he's distorted.

  254. He's changed it.

  255. He's rerouted them back to the land,

  256. to the traditions of their land,

  257. to their false gods,

  258. to things that will never bring them hope,

  259. joy, and peace like Jesus can.

  260. So that is a reality.

  261. That sometimes, even in your attempts,

  262. you know, we're doing this,

  263. who's your one campaign.

  264. And sometimes in your attempts,

  265. to share the gospel with the people in your life,

  266. you might feel like it's just landing on the path,

  267. and the devil is coming,

  268. and snatching the seeds away.

  269. So that's the path,

  270. and the birds.

  271. We're not responsible for that.

  272. We can't help that.

  273. We can mourn it.

  274. We can grieve it.

  275. We can be sorry,

  276. and wish that somehow,

  277. the light of the gospel would cut through the darkness.

  278. And we never know,

  279. if at some point,

  280. God is going to allow that to happen.

  281. But there is a very real reality,

  282. and Paul warns about it in his second letter,

  283. to the church at Corinth.

  284. He says,

  285. in their case,

  286. the God of this world,

  287. has blinded the minds of the unbelievers,

  288. to keep them,

  289. from seeing the light of the gospel,

  290. the glory of Christ,

  291. who is the image of God.

  292. That is reality.

  293. This world is surrounded by darkness.

  294. That's not too hard to see, right?

  295. But the light doesn't always cut through,

  296. some of the darkness.

  297. Thank God it shined in your heart.

  298. Thank God it shined in mine.

  299. It's nothing that we did.

  300. That was all according to God's grace,

  301. and his mercy.

  302. So,

  303. some of the seed,

  304. will fall along the path,

  305. and the birds will eat it up,

  306. and it will never bear fruit.

  307. But he doesn't stop there.

  308. He goes on to the rocky ground.

  309. The rocky ground,

  310. verse five,

  311. let's look at it.

  312. Other seed fell on rocky ground,

  313. where it didn't have much soil,

  314. and it grew up quickly,

  315. since the soil wasn't deep.

  316. Y'all,

  317. now we're getting a little bit closer to home here.

  318. It's easy to look along the path,

  319. and say,

  320. yeah,

  321. some of those people,

  322. they might hear about Jesus.

  323. Maybe they'll visit church on Easter,

  324. but we'll never see him again.

  325. Some of those people,

  326. they just live like heathen all the time,

  327. and you know there's nothing about God in their life.

  328. But what about the ones,

  329. where it falls on rocky ground,

  330. and all of a sudden,

  331. you see this shoot up,

  332. and it looks like,

  333. wow,

  334. something really happens there.

  335. Boy,

  336. that person just found Jesus,

  337. didn't they?

  338. What an amazing change we see.

  339. All of a sudden,

  340. from rocky,

  341. barren ground,

  342. we see this little plant pop up.

  343. Amazing.

  344. And we celebrate,

  345. and we get excited,

  346. and what happened?

  347. The sun came up.

  348. The hot sun shined on it.

  349. You know what plants need to grow?

  350. Anybody?

  351. Sunshine,

  352. don't they?

  353. They need water too.

  354. But sunshine is one of the key ingredients,

  355. that plants need to grow.

  356. But in this case,

  357. the sun came up,

  358. and the plant was scorched,

  359. and it had no root,

  360. and it withered away.

  361. I can promise you,

  362. that this happens time,

  363. and time,

  364. and time again,

  365. with people who hear,

  366. the good news of Jesus,

  367. and they're drawn to it.

  368. They think,

  369. I want that.

  370. That promises me something better,

  371. than what I have.

  372. That's something bigger,

  373. that I could believe in.

  374. That sounds really good.

  375. I got me a free ticket to heaven.

  376. How great is this?

  377. And they latch on,

  378. but no root,

  379. takes place.

  380. They're never rooted,

  381. in the gospel.

  382. They never have,

  383. a real understanding,

  384. believing,

  385. that they are a child of God,

  386. only by His grace.

  387. They think maybe,

  388. they had something to do with it.

  389. I think maybe that,

  390. because they made a good decision,

  391. to come to church that day,

  392. and God changed their life,

  393. and now He's going to give,

  394. untold blessings to them,

  395. turn their life around,

  396. and everything's going to be okay now.

  397. But then the sun comes,

  398. the troubles come,

  399. the storms of life come,

  400. and what happens?

  401. There's no root there.

  402. They were never taught,

  403. and seemingly never drawn,

  404. by the Holy Spirit,

  405. to learn more about the Lord.

  406. Maybe they never even truly,

  407. made a commitment to follow Jesus.

  408. Maybe it was in their head,

  409. but it never made it,

  410. to their heart.

  411. Anybody know the difference?

  412. How many inches,

  413. between the head and the heart?

  414. What's that?

  415. 18,

  416. is it 18?

  417. I think that's right.

  418. 18,

  419. I had 16 in my head,

  420. but you might be right.

  421. Split the difference,

  422. 17 inches.

  423. Look,

  424. there is a difference,

  425. between knowing,

  426. knowing that God is,

  427. and even believing,

  428. that He is good.

  429. There's a difference,

  430. between that,

  431. and placing your faith,

  432. in God,

  433. and God alone.

  434. It doesn't mean,

  435. you have to know,

  436. all the theology.

  437. It doesn't mean,

  438. you have to be able,

  439. to answer all the quiz questions,

  440. about God and the Bible.

  441. But there is a difference,

  442. when it's real,

  443. and when it's shallow.

  444. And I'm afraid,

  445. that many of us,

  446. might be rocky ground,

  447. followers of Jesus.

  448. And our soil is very shallow.

  449. And that's why sometimes,

  450. the storms of life,

  451. will veer us off course.

  452. Sometimes we'll,

  453. quit coming to church,

  454. for a while.

  455. Because we got,

  456. upset at somebody.

  457. Because the storm came,

  458. the sun,

  459. shined hot,

  460. and scorched us.

  461. And we couldn't take it,

  462. because the roots,

  463. were not,

  464. deep.

  465. I promise you,

  466. if your roots,

  467. are deep,

  468. nothing can shake you.

  469. You might feel shaken,

  470. at times.

  471. But nothing,

  472. can shake those roots.

  473. Nothing,

  474. can dig those roots up.

  475. nothing can make,

  476. your plant die,

  477. because Jesus,

  478. is the root of it.

  479. And he will continue,

  480. to feed you.

  481. He will continue,

  482. to cause you,

  483. to thrive.

  484. To cause you,

  485. to recover.

  486. To cause you,

  487. to come back.

  488. So I promise you,

  489. rocky ground Christians,

  490. are not,

  491. genuine followers,

  492. of Jesus.

  493. And someday,

  494. they'll stand,

  495. before the father,

  496. and he will say,

  497. depart from me,

  498. I never knew you.

  499. Don't let that be you.

  500. Don't be a,

  501. rocky ground Christian,

  502. because a,

  503. rocky ground Christian,

  504. is not a Christian,

  505. at all.

  506. They've just jumped in,

  507. with a nice group of people.

  508. They've done,

  509. what society expected.

  510. They've done,

  511. what felt right,

  512. at the time.

  513. They had a moment,

  514. where maybe they felt,

  515. close to God.

  516. They had a moment,

  517. where something,

  518. felt good,

  519. and felt right.

  520. And so they said,

  521. yeah,

  522. I'm in.

  523. I want to jump in,

  524. with that group.

  525. But we see it,

  526. time and time again.

  527. The sun comes up,

  528. and they can't survive it.

  529. That's how you know,

  530. their roots were never planted,

  531. in Christ.

  532. Now I pray,

  533. that at some point,

  534. God takes those,

  535. rocky ground Christians,

  536. and that seed,

  537. gets planted,

  538. in good soil.

  539. That's up to God,

  540. and their response.

  541. But so many times,

  542. that seed,

  543. falls on rocky ground,

  544. and the sun,

  545. scorches it.

  546. What are you?

  547. I'm asking you,

  548. to examine your heart,

  549. this morning.

  550. Is your heart,

  551. the hard footpath,

  552. where the birds come,

  553. and eat the seed,

  554. before it ever has a chance?

  555. Is your heart,

  556. the rocky ground,

  557. with the shallow bit of dirt,

  558. that can pop up,

  559. the little plant there?

  560. Or,

  561. is your heart,

  562. one of these others?

  563. Let's move on.

  564. So we've got,

  565. the rocky ground,

  566. we've got the,

  567. path and the birds,

  568. and then we've got,

  569. the thorns.

  570. The thorns.

  571. Jesus picks it up,

  572. in verse 20,

  573. he said,

  574. the one sown on rocky ground,

  575. this is the one,

  576. who hears the word,

  577. and immediately,

  578. receives it with joy,

  579. but he has no root,

  580. it's short lived,

  581. when distress,

  582. or persecution,

  583. comes because of the word,

  584. immediately,

  585. he falls away,

  586. and then he moves on,

  587. to the thorns.

  588. The one sown among the thorns,

  589. this is the one,

  590. who hears the word,

  591. but the worries of this age,

  592. and the deceitfulness,

  593. of wealth,

  594. choke the word,

  595. and it becomes,

  596. unfruitful.

  597. Now folks,

  598. seemingly,

  599. these are the ones,

  600. who genuinely,

  601. did become followers,

  602. of Jesus.

  603. They had a real,

  604. conversion experience,

  605. they truly placed,

  606. their faith in him,

  607. but at some point,

  608. along the way,

  609. something keeps them,

  610. from bearing fruit.

  611. You know what it is?

  612. It's the thorns.

  613. The thorns,

  614. choke,

  615. what God's trying to do,

  616. in their life,

  617. in their heart.

  618. And do you notice,

  619. what he said,

  620. the specific thorns were?

  621. He said,

  622. the worries of this age,

  623. age,

  624. and the deceitfulness,

  625. of wealth.

  626. The worries of this age,

  627. the deceitfulness,

  628. of wealth.

  629. Isn't that fascinating?

  630. Those are the two things,

  631. that he seemed to indicate,

  632. were the primary thorns,

  633. that could choke this out.

  634. Back in,

  635. what is that,

  636. verse 22,

  637. in the New Living Translation,

  638. that we read at first,

  639. it said,

  640. the seed that fell among the thorns,

  641. represents those,

  642. who hear God's word,

  643. all too quickly,

  644. the message is crowded out,

  645. by the worries of this life,

  646. and the lure of wealth.

  647. Have you ever been deceived,

  648. or lured by wealth,

  649. or the pursuit of it?

  650. I had to add that last part,

  651. because you're looking at me like,

  652. no,

  653. wealth has never really,

  654. wrapped its arms around me,

  655. and you know,

  656. carried me away.

  657. It's stayed pretty far away,

  658. from me in my life.

  659. But how about the pursuit of it?

  660. The pursuit of wealth,

  661. the obsession with wealth.

  662. Has that ever deceived you?

  663. Has that ever lured you?

  664. All of our bank accounts,

  665. look different,

  666. don't they?

  667. All of our retirements,

  668. look different.

  669. All of our savings,

  670. look different.

  671. Some of it,

  672. we're happy with.

  673. Some of it,

  674. we wish,

  675. was a whole lot better,

  676. better than it is.

  677. But I can promise you,

  678. that it's not money,

  679. that's the root of all evil.

  680. How many of you knew that?

  681. Money is not the root of all evil.

  682. Some of you are looking at me like,

  683. isn't that in the Bible?

  684. What is it?

  685. What is the root of all evil?

  686. The love, right.

  687. The love of money.

  688. Why?

  689. Because then you've been deceived.

  690. Money is an inanimate object.

  691. It's a means to an end.

  692. But if you love it,

  693. then you've been lured by it.

  694. You've been deceived by it.

  695. And your love is misplaced.

  696. Money will never make you happy.

  697. God can make you happy.

  698. And God can provide resources

  699. along the way

  700. that will help you fulfill

  701. what he has you to do in your life.

  702. But the love

  703. or being deceived by

  704. or lured by money,

  705. that will absolutely become a thorn

  706. that chokes out

  707. whatever God's trying to do in your life.

  708. Because your agenda

  709. will never be God's agenda.

  710. Do we realize that?

  711. Our hearts will on their own

  712. never pursue

  713. what God's heart has for us.

  714. They will always lead us

  715. towards something

  716. that we can't ultimately ever achieve.

  717. They will always lead us

  718. down a path

  719. that ends in destruction.

  720. That's where our hearts

  721. will lead us.

  722. But if God has a different plan for you

  723. and a different path

  724. for you to walk,

  725. be careful of the thorns.

  726. Because those thorns

  727. can come up

  728. and even without you realizing it,

  729. they can choke out the fruit

  730. that God's trying to bear

  731. in your life.

  732. Young people,

  733. be careful

  734. of the lure

  735. of money.

  736. Be careful of the lure

  737. of the pursuit,

  738. the love

  739. of wealth.

  740. It can absolutely

  741. be seductive.

  742. It can absolutely

  743. lead you to concentrate

  744. on that

  745. and all of a sudden

  746. you're making decisions

  747. not based on

  748. what is good

  749. for my soul.

  750. What does God want

  751. with me

  752. in my life?

  753. Instead,

  754. you're making decisions

  755. based on

  756. what makes the most sense

  757. financially for me.

  758. Sometimes,

  759. those things

  760. might coincide.

  761. Sometimes,

  762. God might have you

  763. make the soundest

  764. financial decision.

  765. But sometimes,

  766. your financial advisor

  767. might say,

  768. you tithe money

  769. to the church

  770. every month.

  771. Do you realize

  772. what you could do

  773. with that?

  774. Do you realize

  775. the investments

  776. you could make

  777. with that?

  778. You give extra money

  779. to this church

  780. and what does that do

  781. for you?

  782. How does that

  783. improve your bottom line?

  784. How does that

  785. ensure your financial security?

  786. Doesn't make sense

  787. on the balance sheet.

  788. And so,

  789. you choose

  790. not to follow

  791. God's command

  792. in giving back

  793. a portion of what

  794. he's given to you.

  795. And the thorn

  796. has come up

  797. and it's choked out

  798. the blessings

  799. that God wanted

  800. for you.

  801. Because when you invest

  802. in the kingdom of God,

  803. God returns that to you

  804. more than you could

  805. ever,

  806. ever imagine.

  807. And I'm not talking about

  808. you give $10

  809. and God's gonna turn it

  810. into a thousand

  811. in your bank account.

  812. That's not what

  813. I'm talking about.

  814. I'm talking about

  815. God reaps

  816. great rewards

  817. in your life.

  818. In the areas

  819. that only he can know.

  820. Whether it's relationships

  821. being put back together.

  822. Whether it's you

  823. being used

  824. to bring other people

  825. to the saving knowledge

  826. of Jesus

  827. brought from darkness

  828. to light.

  829. You don't know

  830. what God's gonna do

  831. in your life

  832. transform you

  833. and those you love

  834. in ways that you

  835. can't imagine.

  836. But when you invest

  837. in God's kingdom

  838. you see it happen.

  839. That's your time.

  840. That's your energy.

  841. And yes,

  842. that's also your finances.

  843. So the lure

  844. of wealth

  845. can be a thorn

  846. that chokes

  847. what God's trying to do.

  848. Also the worries

  849. of this life.

  850. The cares of this life.

  851. Say man,

  852. I'd love to come help

  853. with the teens,

  854. you know.

  855. They're doing

  856. Wednesday night

  857. activities.

  858. They're going out

  859. and going to youth camp.

  860. They're doing

  861. all kinds of things.

  862. I'd love to help

  863. in the children's department.

  864. I know they need

  865. more teachers.

  866. They need more volunteers.

  867. I know there are places

  868. that God has

  869. for me to serve.

  870. But you see,

  871. I can't right now

  872. because the cares

  873. of this life

  874. are thorns

  875. that are choking me.

  876. So what you're saying is,

  877. and I'm not picking

  878. on anybody in this room,

  879. but what you're saying is

  880. these thorns

  881. are bigger than God.

  882. These thorns,

  883. I can't handle

  884. and if I can't handle them,

  885. God can't handle them.

  886. So I can't do

  887. what I was placed

  888. on this earth to do,

  889. which is let God use me

  890. to impact others.

  891. I can't do that

  892. because the cares

  893. of this world

  894. are choking me.

  895. Y'all, I promise you,

  896. we serve a God

  897. who understands

  898. what you're going through.

  899. He's been there.

  900. He's been rejected

  901. by everyone.

  902. He's had those

  903. he loved

  904. and loved him

  905. turn on him.

  906. He's been tempted

  907. in every way

  908. that you could possibly

  909. be tempted.

  910. He's been tired.

  911. He's been hungry.

  912. He's been poor.

  913. He's been without.

  914. He's been through it all

  915. and he says,

  916. I am enough for you.

  917. I will sustain you.

  918. I will see you through.

  919. Don't cut out

  920. the healthiest part

  921. of your life

  922. when you're going through

  923. difficult times.

  924. Maybe you've got

  925. to cut back certain areas.

  926. Maybe you've got

  927. to cut back certain things

  928. you're involved in,

  929. certain obligations you have,

  930. but don't cut out

  931. serving Jesus.

  932. That's where your lifeline is.

  933. That's where your strength

  934. comes from.

  935. Maybe God places you

  936. in a situation

  937. where you can't

  938. physically do something.

  939. Or maybe you're in a season

  940. where you're exhausted.

  941. And you understand

  942. that I've got to step back

  943. from teaching,

  944. but I'm going to find

  945. another way to serve.

  946. I'm going to jump

  947. on the prayer team.

  948. I'm going to do

  949. whatever I can do

  950. to be a part

  951. of God's kingdom

  952. because that's where

  953. I get my strength from.

  954. That's where I get

  955. my lifeline from.

  956. What are our priorities?

  957. And what thorns

  958. are choking out

  959. what God wants to do

  960. in our lives?

  961. The path

  962. had seeds on it.

  963. The birds came

  964. and ate it.

  965. The rocky ground

  966. had seeds,

  967. but the sun scorched them

  968. because they had no roots.

  969. The thorns

  970. grew up.

  971. The roots went down,

  972. but it choked out.

  973. What God wanted to do

  974. with the cares

  975. of this world

  976. and the lure

  977. of wealth.

  978. But then you get

  979. to the good ground.

  980. You get to the good ground.

  981. Let's look at verse 23.

  982. The seeds that were sown

  983. on the good ground,

  984. this is the one

  985. who hears

  986. and understands the word,

  987. who does produce fruit

  988. and yields.

  989. Sometimes a hundred,

  990. sometimes sixty,

  991. sometimes thirty times

  992. what was sown.

  993. The good ground

  994. is what God desires

  995. all of us to be.

  996. All of us

  997. can be good ground.

  998. Say, man,

  999. if you think I can be good ground,

1000. you don't know me very well.

1001. I'm more like that rocky ground.

  1002. I've got a pretty rough exterior.

1003. I'm more like that thorns,

  1004. you know,

  1005. I'm kind of thorny.

  1006. So I'm not

  1007. this good ground,

  1008. this soft,

  1009. fertile soil.

  1010. God can make you

  1011. good ground

  1012. if you'll let him.

1013. If you will open up

  1014. your heart

  1015. to the Lord,

  1016. God can change you.

  1017. He can soften you.

  1018. He can make you

  1019. into good ground

  1020. that bears fruit

  1021. for his kingdom.

  1022. There are four types

  1023. of soil here.

  1024. A sower went out

  1025. to sow.

  1026. You've got your pathway.

  1027. It was trampled on.

1028. The birds ate it up.

  1029. And what happened?

  1030. The seeds were destroyed.

1031. You've got your rocky ground.

  1032. There were no roots.

  1033. The sun scorched it

  1034. and the plant

  1035. withered away.

1036. You've got your thorny ground.

  1037. The thorns

  1038. choked it out.

  1039. It suffocated

  1040. and it died.

  1041. God might bring you

  1042. home to heaven

  1043. if you're not going

  1044. to bear fruit

  1045. for his kingdom.

  1046. He warns about that

  1047. time and time again.

  1048. He's warned entire churches

  1049. about that.

  1050. In Revelation,

  1051. he says,

  1052. I'll shut you down,

  1053. church,

1054. if you don't bear fruit

  1055. for me.

1056. The way he put it,

  1057. he said,

  1058. I will remove

  1059. your

  1060. lamp stick.

  1061. I will remove

  1062. your lamp stand.

  1063. I don't want to see

  1064. that happen to you.

  1065. I don't want to see

  1066. that happen to me

  1067. and my family.

  1068. I don't want to see

1069. that happen to this church.

1070. So what can we do

  1071. to be good ground,

  1072. good soil?

  1073. Because what happened there?

  1074. It grew up.

  1075. It increased.

  1076. It yielded

  1077. many times

  1078. what was originally planted.

1079. Would you go one more

  1080. place with me

  1081. and we'll be done.

  1082. Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1083. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1084. in verse 6.

1085. Paul is writing this letter

1086. to the church at Colossae

  1087. and he says,

  1088. so then,

1089. just as you have received

  1090. Christ Jesus as Lord,

  1091. Colossians 2.6,

  1092. continue to walk

  1093. in him.

1094. Just as you have received

  1095. Christ Jesus as Lord,

1096. continue to walk in him,

  1097. being rooted

  1098. and built up

  1099. in him.

1100. This is how you know

1101. if you are good soil.

  1102. Are you being rooted

  1103. and built up

  1104. in Christ Jesus?

  1105. established in the faith

1106. just as you were taught

  1107. and overflowing

  1108. with gratitude.

  1109. Verse 8.

  1110. Be careful

  1111. that no one

  1112. takes you captive

  1113. through philosophy

  1114. and empty deceit

  1115. based on human

  1116. tradition.

  1117. Based on the elements

  1118. of this world

  1119. rather than Christ.

  1120. Do you see

  1121. what he's saying here?

1122. This is how you know

  1123. if you're good ground.

1124. This is how you know

  1125. if you're good soil

  1126. if you're being rooted

  1127. and built up

  1128. in Christ.

  1129. You see that?

  1130. Being rooted

  1131. and built up.

  1132. Trying to give you

  1133. a visual here.

  1134. Being rooted

  1135. and built up.

1136. That is how we know

  1137. we're good ground.

  1138. Are you being rooted

  1139. and built up

  1140. in Christ?

  1141. I love how the

  1142. New Living Translation

  1143. puts this.

  1144. It says,

  1145. let your roots

  1146. grow down

  1147. into him.

  1148. And then the Christian

  1149. standard,

1150. which is what I've got

  1151. right here,

  1152. says being built

  1153. up in him.

  1154. So you put that

  1155. together,

  1156. what do you have?

  1157. Let your roots

  1158. grow down into him.

  1159. Being built up

  1160. in him.

  1161. Let's say this

  1162. together.

  1163. Ready?

1164. If we can get to it.

  1165. Here we go.

  1166. Here we go.

  1167. Ready?

  1168. As my roots

  1169. grow down,

  1170. I'm built up.

  1171. One more time.

  1172. Ready?

  1173. As my roots

  1174. grow down,

  1175. I'm built up.

  1176. That is how we

  1177. avoid being rocky

  1178. ground,

  1179. being the path

  1180. that the birds

  1181. eat from,

  1182. and being thorny

  1183. ground.

  1184. When my roots

  1185. grow down,

  1186. I'm built up.

  1187. Grow down into what?

  1188. Rooted,

  1189. built up,

  1190. established

  1191. in Christ Jesus.

  1192. There are a lot

  1193. of voices

  1194. calling for your

  1195. attention,

  1196. but one voice

  1197. you must hear.

  1198. One voice

  1199. you must listen.

  1200. The words

  1201. are in red

  1202. in some of your

  1203. Bibles.

  1204. How many of you

  1205. have seen a red

  1206. letter Bible

  1207. that has all the

  1208. words of Jesus

  1209. in red?

  1210. Isn't that neat?

  1211. Crowder wrote

  1212. a song about it.

  1213. A Christian singer

1214. wrote a song about it.

  1215. It said,

  1216. then I read

  1217. the red letters

  1218. and the ground

  1219. began to shake.

  1220. Prison walls

  1221. started falling.

  1222. I became a free man

  1223. that day.

  1224. Why?

  1225. What changed him?

  1226. What changed his life?

  1227. The words of Jesus.

  1228. When he said,

  1229. I came to seek

  1230. and to save

  1231. those who were lost.

  1232. He said,

  1233. I,

1234. if I am lifted up,

  1235. I will draw

  1236. all men unto me.

  1237. He said,

  1238. I am the way,

  1239. the truth,

  1240. and the life.

  1241. No man can come

  1242. to the Father

  1243. except through me.

  1244. He is the one.

  1245. He's the source

  1246. of strength.

  1247. He's got all

  1248. the nutrients.

  1249. He's got the power

  1250. and the grace

  1251. and the love

  1252. to save you

  1253. from sin

  1254. and to change you

  1255. into who he wants

  1256. you to be.

  1257. The only enemies

  1258. are the rocky ground,

  1259. are the thorns,

  1260. the things that can

  1261. derail that.

  1262. So where are you?

1263. This is a check your heart

  1264. moment right now.

  1265. Where are you

  1266. in your life?

  1267. Maybe you've been

  1268. saved for six months.

  1269. Maybe you've been

  1270. saved for two weeks.

  1271. Maybe you can save

  1272. for 50 years.

  1273. Maybe you've been

  1274. a follower of Jesus

1275. as long as you can remember.

  1276. Maybe you've been

  1277. part of this church

1278. as long as you can remember.

1279. I'm not asking about that.

  1280. I'm asking what kind

  1281. of soil your heart

  1282. is right now.

  1283. What is Jesus

  1284. working with?

1285. As my roots grow down,

  1286. I'm built up.

  1287. Man,

  1288. you wonder why

  1289. God hasn't changed

  1290. you that much.

  1291. Maybe you're rocky ground.

  1292. Maybe your soil

  1293. is very shallow.

1294. Maybe the sun scorched you

  1295. at some point

  1296. along the way.

  1297. Maybe the thorns

  1298. have choked out

  1299. the fruit that God's

  1300. trying to bear

  1301. in your life.

1302. As my roots grow down,

  1303. I'm built up.

  1304. Here's our takeaway

  1305. this morning.

  1306. is God's truth

  1307. taking root

  1308. and changing

  1309. you.

  1310. How much have you

  1311. changed

  1312. since last year?

  1313. How much have you

  1314. changed

1315. in the last 10 years?

  1316. how much of that

  1317. was God?

  1318. How much of that

  1319. was Him?

  1320. Your roots

  1321. going down

  1322. into Him

  1323. and Him

  1324. building you up.

  1325. If not,

  1326. it's not too late.

  1327. It's not too late

  1328. to change.

  1329. Number one,

  1330. it's never too late

  1331. to turn to Jesus.

  1332. We might have

1333. one of our young people,

  1334. we might have

1335. one of our older folks,

  1336. we might have

  1337. somebody in between

  1338. who says,

  1339. you know what,

  1340. I've been holding out

1341. but today is the day

  1342. I'm going to turn

  1343. to Jesus

  1344. and say,

  1345. okay God,

  1346. I hear,

  1347. I'm going to listen

  1348. and the Holy Spirit

1349. is going to help me

  1350. understand what you're

  1351. talking about.

  1352. I know I'm a sinner,

  1353. I know Jesus died

  1354. for my sin,

  1355. I know God raised

  1356. Him from the dead

  1357. and I'm choosing

1358. to place all my faith

  1359. in Him

  1360. to forgive me

  1361. of my sin.

  1362. I'm not good enough,

  1363. I never will be

  1364. but Jesus

  1365. wants to save me

1366. so I'm going to say yes.

  1367. Save me from hell,

1368. the punishment of my sin

  1369. and I can become

  1370. God's child.

  1371. If that's you,

1372. if you want to make

  1373. that decision today,

1374. would you bow your heads

  1375. with me together

  1376. all across this room?

1377. Would you bow your heads

1378. and let's be in prayer

  1379. right now.

1380. If you know in your heart

1381. that you are a child of God,

  1382. you are signed,

1383. sealed and going to be

  1384. delivered someday,

1385. then would you do me

  1386. a favor and pray

1387. for those in this room

  1388. right now

  1389. who are still struggling

  1390. with that.

  1391. There are people

  1392. in this room

  1393. who think they're

  1394. not quite good enough,

  1395. they wonder

1396. if somewhere along the way

  1397. they didn't measure up.

1398. would you in your heart

1399. pray that the Holy Spirit

  1400. would reveal

  1401. God's love to them

  1402. that it's nothing

  1403. that they can do

  1404. that can earn

  1405. forgiveness of sins.

  1406. It's only

  1407. what Jesus did

  1408. on the cross.

  1409. Would you pray

  1410. for them right now?

  1411. I'm going to address

  1412. those of you

  1413. who I just mentioned

  1414. a moment ago,

  1415. maybe you're not sure.

  1416. Maybe you don't know

  1417. if you're completely forgiven.

  1418. Maybe you don't know

  1419. if your imperfections

  1420. have cost you

  1421. heaven,

  1422. cost you

  1423. the chance

  1424. to be God's child.

  1425. But today

1426. you want to get that settled.

1427. Would you slip your hand up?

  1428. Thank you.

  1429. Thank you.

  1430. Thank you.

  1431. Anybody else?

  1432. Thank you.

  1433. Thank you.

  1434. In a moment

1435. the music's going to play.

1436. Those who raised their hand,

1437. would you just slip out of the aisle?

  1438. Everybody's going to stand.

1439. We'll try not to draw

  1440. any attention to you,

1441. but would you slip out of the aisle

1442. and just come meet me

1443. at the front pew down here?

1444. We'll sit and talk about it.

  1445. Let me address

1446. the rest of the room

  1447. before we dismiss here.

  1448. Those of you

  1449. who have full assurance

1450. that you are God's child

  1451. and He's forgiven you

  1452. and you know

  1453. you're standing

  1454. before God.

  1455. Let me ask

  1456. what kind of soil

  1457. you are.

  1458. Have your roots

  1459. gone down into Him?

  1460. Have you been

  1461. built up

  1462. into Him?

  1463. Thank you.
