  1. All right, this morning we are continuing on in our series Stories of the Kingdom.

  2. ! Man, we had all those kids and everybody sitting right down here and now we've just got this big empty space. That's all right.

  3. If anybody wants to get a better seat, it's open right here. Now you are in the spit zone.

  4. So, all right, we are going to look at Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  5. We have been in the Gospel of Matthew every week.

  6. As we're looking at the parables of Jesus, the lessons that we can learn from them,

  7. Matthew chapter 7, good job Preston, verses 1 through 5.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  8. You know, it wasn't just you. It's not working for me either, Christopher.

  9. Let me see if this got slid down on the wrong thing here.

  10. There we go.

  11. We got it going.

  12. All right.

  13. Matthew chapter 7, verses 1 through 5.

    Matthew 7:1–5

  14. As you're turning there, I want to remind you guys that there are hypocrites in church.

  15. Is that surprising to anybody?

  16. Were you all unaware?

  17. How many of you would just had no idea that there were hypocrites in church?

  18. That's a really nice young man over there.

  19. He said, are you kidding me?

  20. Yeah, unfortunately there are.

  21. How many of you are also aware there are hypocrites outside of church?

  22. You know there are hypocrites at Walmart?

  23. Hypocrites at Spring Market?

  24. It's not just grocery stores.

  25. There are hypocrites on city council.

  26. Hypocrites at Milano's.

  27. Hypocrites at...

  28. I don't know.

  29. I'm thinking about the pecan shed.

  30. I mean, probably not any hypocrites.

  31. No, there are.

  32. There are.

  33. Hypocrites at the open table?

  34. Hypocrites in your home?

  35. Sorry about that.

  36. Look, there are hypocrites everywhere.

  37. Do you know why that's true?

  38. Because we're all hypocrites.

  39. The Bible tells us we are.

  40. It says, let God be true and every man a liar.

  41. And not just males.

  42. That represents mankind.

  43. All of us.

  44. All of us, all right?

  45. We're all liars.

  46. It's part of it.

  47. We can't help ourselves.

  48. The closer we get to the truth,

  49. the closer we become like Jesus.

  50. Because he is only truth.

  51. But why is it that people say,

  52. I don't want to go to that church by a bunch of hypocrites?

  53. But they'll go every other place.

  54. There are a bunch of hypocrites.

  55. Why do you think that is?

  56. Well, maybe it's because as followers of Jesus,

  57. we're supposed to be more like him.

  58. So we're kind of setting ourselves up as,

  59. hey, we follow Jesus.

  60. He wasn't a hypocrite.

  61. Why would we be one?

  62. Well, because we struggle with the same things

  63. that everyone else struggles with.

  64. Sometimes, even though we try to follow Jesus,

  65. sometimes we find ourselves being hypocritical.

  66. Well, in the lead up in Matthew 6,

  67. to what Jesus is talking about here in Matthew 7,

  68. he talks about hypocrites.

  69. Look at verse 1, Matthew 6.

  70. You got to turn back a page.

  71. Sorry about that.

  72. Verse 1 and chapter 2.

  73. What did I say?

  74. Chapter 6, verse 1 and verse 2.

  75. Here we go.

  76. Do not, sorry, there we go.

  77. Watch out.

  78. Don't do your deeds, your good deeds publicly

  79. to be admired by others,

  80. for you'll lose your reward from your Father in heaven.

  81. When you give to someone in need,

  82. don't do as the what?

  83. Hypocrites do.

  84. Don't do as the hypocrites do.

  85. Look down at verse 5.

  86. When you pray,

  87. don't be like the what?

  88. Hypocrites,

  89. who love to pray publicly on the street corners

  90. and the synagogues,

  91. where everyone can see them.

  92. I tell you the truth,

  93. that's all the reward they will ever get.

  94. Look down at verse 16.

  95. When you fast,

  96. don't make it obvious like the hypocrites do.

  97. They try to look miserable and disheveled

  98. so people will admire them for their fasting.

  99. Look at how long I've gone without food.

  100. I've been on my knees praying that whole time.

  101. Sure you have.

  102. I tell you the truth,

  103. that is the only reward they will ever get.

  104. Listen.

  105. The consistent command there

  106. is don't be like the what?

  107. Hypocrites.

  108. We can do better.

  109. Let's say it together.

  110. Don't be like the hypocrites.

  111. Hypocrites.

  112. So we get this lesson from Jesus in chapter 6.

  113. Then we move on to chapter 7.

  114. And remember,

  115. you always got to take the Bible in context.

  116. If you pull an isolated verse

  117. or little passage out of the Bible,

  118. you can make it try to say

  119. whatever you want it to say.

  120. But if you read the Bible

  121. in the larger context

  122. of what it's teaching us,

  123. then you can really understand

  124. what Jesus was trying to communicate to us.

  125. So we read it in this context,

  126. and then we see in verse 1 of chapter 7.

  127. Do not judge others

  128. and you will not be judged.

  129. Anybody ever heard that verse quoted to you?

  130. Doesn't the Bible say something like,

  131. don't judge lest ye be judged?

  132. And they always use the King James Version

  133. because they probably heard that as a kid

  134. and they've never heard another verse since.

  135. It's the favorite verse of unbelievers often,

  136. non-Christians.

  137. They love to throw that at us.

  138. You can't tell me what to do

  139. because the Bible says don't judge.

  140. They probably couldn't quote

  141. one other verse of the Bible,

  142. but they got that one down.

  143. Why is that?

  144. Because none of us

  145. want to be called out for anything.

  146. None of us ever want to be put

  147. under the magnifying glass

  148. or the microscope

  149. and have our lives put on trial.

  150. Don't mess with me.

  151. Let me do my thing.

  152. Okay?

  153. You do you, boo.

  154. I've never had that said to me.

  155. I probably have.

  156. For you will be treated

  157. as you treat others.

  158. So again,

  159. we got to read this verse in context.

  160. What's he actually saying here?

  161. Don't be a hypocrite.

  162. Don't judge hypocritically.

  163. Y'all, when I do research for sermons,

  164. a lot of it comes directly from the Holy Spirit.

  165. I'm reading the scripture.

  166. He's putting thoughts into my head.

  167. I'm putting them down.

  168. Some of it, believe it or not,

  169. comes from other books

  170. that people have written,

  171. theologians,

  172. they'll go through and read the Bible.

  173. They'll make these things

  174. called commentaries

  175. and they'll put down

  176. all these thoughts

  177. and a lot of those

  178. are guided by the Holy Spirit

  179. and so you can glean a lot from that.

  180. It can be a real advantage to you

  181. as you're putting together sermons.

  182. I can also watch videos

  183. of other pastors

  184. preaching through a certain passage

  185. that I'm going to preach through

  186. and it's like,

  187. hey, if they got something valuable from that,

  188. maybe it could apply to us.

  189. If their bullet fits my gun,

  190. so to speak,

  191. maybe I'll shoot it.

  192. Anyway, I do that regularly

  193. and throughout this passage,

  194. there's a church in Georgia,

  195. this passage, this series,

  196. there's a church in Georgia

  197. that also went through

  198. a series on the parables of Jesus

  199. and I've been getting a lot from that.

  200. For this one,

  201. I got one from a pastor in Oklahoma,

  202. Craig Groeschel.

  203. I've used him before.

  204. Not putting a blanket stamp

  205. on everything that he says

  206. is exactly what I would say.

  207. I can't say that.

  208. I haven't watched everything

  209. he'd ever says

  210. but this was valuable

  211. so I want to share a few of the thoughts

  212. that I got from him

  213. as well as some

  214. that I got from you all

  215. and he says this,

  216. your harshest judgment

  217. often reveals

  218. your greatest weakness.

  219. I thought that was really good.

  220. Have you ever noticed

  221. that when somebody

  222. is calling out somebody else

  223. for something,

  224. you often find out later

  225. that they were struggling

  226. in the same area.

  227. Anybody ever notice that?

  228. Is it just me?

  229. Yeah, me too.

  230. So when Craig Groeschel

  231. said that quote,

  232. I wrote it down like,

  233. man, that's good.

  234. Now listen to the other things

  235. he had to say on this passage

  236. because there was a lot of gold in there

  237. and I want to share some of that with you

  238. but that's the first one.

  239. Your harshest criticism

  240. often reveals

  241. your greatest or deepest weakness.

  242. He actually shared this story

  243. of a young man

  244. that he had been counseling

  245. and a guy came to him

  246. and it was two roommates,

  247. young men,

  248. they were rooming together,

  249. saved money

  250. and the guy came to him

  251. and said,

  252. Pastor Craig,

  253. I'm so mad at my roommate right now

  254. and he was so just filled up with anger,

  255. righteous indignation kind of thing,

  256. you know,

  257. and he's just angry.

  258. He said,

  259. I caught my roommate

  260. looking at porn

  261. on my computer.

  262. How dare he?

  263. And he was just,

  264. I mean,

  265. as hateful as he could be.

  266. Not like,

  267. hey,

  268. let's try to get this guy some help.

  269. He's struggling.

  270. It was,

  271. I cannot believe

  272. that he would do

  273. such a horrible thing.

  274. I don't know all the story,

  275. the circumstances

  276. of how this happened

  277. but he said

  278. the very next day

  279. it came out

  280. that this guy

  281. who was so mad

  282. at his roommate

  283. for doing this

  284. had been having

  285. a multi-year affair

  286. with a married woman.

  287. The very area

  288. of sin

  289. that he was so mad

  290. at this guy

  291. for,

  292. he was having

  293. an even way more

  294. damaging issue

  295. in his own life

  296. and had been for years.

  297. That's an extreme example

  298. but there's a truth there.

  299. Often,

  300. the very thing

  301. that you and I

  302. get so mad

  303. at others for

  304. is something

  305. that we struggle

  306. with ourselves.

  307. So what does he say

  308. in verse 3?

  309. Lead up to it.

  310. Don't judge others.

  311. You won't be judged

  312. for you will be treated

  313. as you treat others.

  314. The standard you use

  315. in judging

  316. is the standard

  317. by which you will be judged.

  318. Verse 3.

  319. And why worry

  320. about a speck

  321. in your friend's eye

  322. when you have

  323. a log

  324. in your own?

  325. How can you think

  326. of saying to your friend,

  327. let me help you

  328. get rid of that speck

  329. in your eye

  330. when you can't see

  331. past the log

  332. in your own eye?

  333. What does he say

  334. in verse 5?

  335. Hypocrite.

  336. Hypocrite.

  337. First,

  338. get rid of the log

  339. in your own eye

  340. and then you will see

  341. well enough

  342. to deal with the speck

  343. in your friend's eye.

  344. Hypocrite.

  345. Don't be a hypocrite.

  346. Now y'all,

  347. we know what hypocrites

  348. look like in Texas.

  349. Right?

  350. All hat and no cattle.

  351. Now look,

  352. I was born in Fort Worth,

  353. lived in Mahea

  354. and Corsicana

  355. and various parts

  356. of the metroplex.

  357. It's just a big conglomerate

  358. of little towns anyway.

  359. So I'm a Texan,

  360. but I've lived

  361. a lot of other places

  362. in my life too.

  363. Lived in Central America

  364. as missionaries.

  365. We've lived in,

  366. I lived in California.

  367. Look,

  368. I was a missionary

  369. to California

  370. for a while,

  371. okay?

  372. Might have just been

  373. living there at the time,

  374. but I felt like

  375. I was a missionary

  376. because I was coming

  377. from Texas,

  378. you know?

  379. Got to teach y'all

  380. how to live out here.

  381. And then we lived

  382. in Nevada,

  383. we lived in Oklahoma,

  384. went to college

  385. in Tennessee

  386. for a little while.

  387. We've lived a lot of places,

  388. traveled a lot of places.

  389. So I've never really

  390. been a cowboy,

  391. right?

  392. I've never been a rancher.

  393. My dad was that.

  394. He grew up on ranches.

  395. He was a cowboy.

  396. His brother did rodeo.

  397. My dad did a little

  398. here and there.

  399. But, you know,

  400. they lived that life.

  401. That wasn't me though.

  402. I never had that

  403. even opportunity

  404. to live that life.

  405. But I always had boots

  406. and I always had a hat.

  407. Always.

  408. Always had a cowboy hat

  409. and always had boots.

  410. Why?

  411. Because I'm from Texas

  412. and that's what you do,

  413. right?

  414. You just have that.

  415. Even if you don't even

  416. wear it that often,

  417. you still have it.

  418. But there's a difference

  419. in those of us

  420. who have a pair of boots

  421. and a hat

  422. and those of us

  423. who are actual ranchers,

  424. actual cowboys,

  425. who actually need

  426. the shade

  427. that the hat provides

  428. and they need

  429. the functionality

  430. that cowboy boots

  431. give you

  432. when you're riding horses,

  433. right?

  434. There's a difference there.

  435. We know what it means

  436. when somebody's all hat

  437. and no cattle.

  438. If they don't admit that,

  439. they try to pass themselves off

  440. as something as they're not,

  441. then they're a cowboy.

  442. Call them dudes, right?

  443. But listen,

  444. they're not a real cowboy.

  445. They're hypocrites.

  446. What's that?

  447. Drugstore cowboy.

  448. That's right.

  449. There you go.

  450. Drugstore cowboys.

  451. Pastor Craig Owens

  452. said this,

  453. a Christian

  454. who carries the name

  455. of Jesus Christ

  456. but not the nature

  457. of Jesus Christ

  458. is a hypocrite.

  459. Did you catch that?

  460. A Christian

  461. who carries his name

  462. but not his nature

  463. is a hypocrite.

  464. I dare say

  465. that if we took a poll

  466. of all you in this room,

  467. every one of you

  468. would raise your hand

  469. and say I'm a Christian.

  470. I'm not going to speak

  471. for all of you.

  472. There might be a couple of you

  473. who are feeling

  474. especially honest

  475. and you're like,

  476. no, I'm not.

  477. And that's all right.

  478. Just glad you're here today.

  479. Maybe you'll learn

  480. something about Jesus

  481. you didn't know

  482. and be drawn to him.

  483. But I think most of us

  484. in this room

  485. would say,

  486. yeah, I'm a Christian.

  487. So you carry his name,

  488. Christ.

  489. Christian Christ.

  490. Follower of Jesus.

  491. But you don't carry

  492. his nature.

  493. You might think

  494. you carry a Christian nature.

  495. You might think

  496. you carry a church nature.

  497. But you don't carry

  498. the nature of the person

  499. we read about

  500. in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  501. That's the real Jesus.

  502. So do you know

  503. what you are

  504. if you carry his name

  505. but not his nature?

  506. You're a drugstore cowboy.

  507. You're all hat and no cattle.

  508. You're a hypocrite.

  509. In a very serious way.

  510. And that's what Jesus

  511. is warning against.

  512. That's what he's warning against

  513. in Matthew 6

  514. and then into Matthew 7.

  515. So he says,

  516. don't be that.

  517. Don't be a hypocrite.

  518. Why?

  519. Because number one,

  520. you're carrying his name

  521. without his nature.

  522. That is the serious crime here.

  523. We just read about

  524. his warning against hypocrites

  525. in Matthew 6.

  526. Do you understand?

  527. The examples he gave,

  528. there were three.

  529. Giving,

  530. praying,

  531. and fasting.

  532. Those were the three

  533. big religious expressions

  534. you could do back then.

  535. Not a whole lot has changed.

  536. Now we don't fast

  537. a whole lot

  538. in America,

  539. especially Baptist churches.

  540. Right?

  541. Look at me.

  542. I don't fast a whole lot.

  543. You could probably use

  544. to fast maybe a little more.

  545. But hey,

  546. I'm working on a diet plan.

  547. We're getting there.

  548. Steadily working down.

  549. Alright,

  550. here we go.

  551. Hypocrites

  552. are somebody

  553. who will do

  554. all the religious things,

  555. the religious stuff,

  556. the religious exercises,

  557. but there's no real heart

  558. to support it.

  559. They're missing

  560. the nature of Jesus

  561. while they put on

  562. this religious show.

  563. So,

  564. Mark chapter 7

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  565. and verse 6.

  566. Mark chapter 7

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  567. and verse 6.

  568. While you're looking there,

  569. it's one book over.

  570. These people

  571. honor me with their lips,

  572. but their hearts

  573. are far from me.

  574. Here's the perspective.

  575. A religious show

  576. earns no favor

  577. from God.

  578. A religious show

  579. earns no favor

  580. from God.

  581. You can do

  582. all those good things,

  583. but that's not

  584. going to earn you

  585. any brownie points

  586. with God.

  587. You can be in church

  588. every Sunday.

  589. You can sing the songs.

  590. You can give your tithes.

  591. But if your heart

  592. is far from him,

  593. what good is it?

  594. It's no good.

  595. That is the lesson

  596. that Jesus is teaching us.

  597. It doesn't accomplish anything

  598. that you think

  599. it's accomplishing

  600. because there's no magic actions

  601. that will win you

  602. favor from God.

  603. There's only a response

  604. of the heart.

  605. There's only a posture

  606. of the heart

  607. that will win you

  608. favor from God.

  609. So where's your heart sitting?

  610. Where's your heart sitting today?

  611. And that's what he's

  612. trying to teach us

  613. in Mark 7.

  614. Look, we can honor him

  615. with our lips all day,

  616. but if our hearts

  617. are not close to him,

  618. let's talk about that

  619. for a second.

  620. Where is Jesus?

  621. If our hearts aren't there,

  622. then our hearts

  623. aren't close to him.

  624. Say, where is Jesus?

  625. Well, where was he

  626. when he was walking

  627. around this earth?

  628. Jesus was with

  629. the least of these.

  630. Jesus was with

  631. the sinners.

  632. Jesus was with

  633. those who were

  634. at the bottom

  635. of society's

  636. caste system,

  637. society's order.

  638. He didn't call

  639. the greatest

  640. and the best

  641. and the coolest

  642. and the most popular.

  643. He didn't call those.

  644. He called those

  645. who didn't make the cut.

  646. that's where Jesus was.

  647. He went and hung out

  648. with what they called

  649. publicans and sinners,

  650. the outcasts of society.

  651. Jesus hung out

  652. with the blind,

  653. the poor,

  654. the crippled,

  655. and he helped them.

  656. He healed them.

  657. He showed them love.

  658. He gave them something

  659. that nobody else

  660. in society

  661. was giving them.

  662. That's where he was.

  663. So if your heart

  664. is not going to be

  665. far from Jesus,

  666. then your heart's

  667. got to be where

  668. his was

  669. and still is today.

  670. And I'm living proof

  671. of what the mercy

  672. of God can do.

  673. I'm living proof

  674. that God

  675. uses those

  676. who aren't

  677. at the top

  678. of the class.

  679. If you'd seen

  680. my grades

  681. in college,

  682. I don't want you

  683. to see my grades

  684. in college.

  685. You're going to say

  686. that guy's not fit

  687. to be our pastor,

  688. okay?

  689. Look,

  690. I tried a lot harder

  691. in seminary.

  692. I was really engaged

  693. and I had better grades

  694. in seminary.

  695. But listen,

  696. you don't have to be

  697. the best of the best.

  698. Jesus is working

  699. with those.

  700. He's seeking those

  701. who usually are not

  702. the richest,

  703. not the smartest,

  704. not the best

  705. in the world's eyes.

  706. But he reaches out

  707. to them.

  708. So if your heart's

  709. going to be with him,

  710. that's where your heart's

  711. got to be.

  712. Carrying his name

  713. without his nature.

  714. A religious show

  715. earns no favor

  716. from God.

  717. Secondly,

  718. and there's only

  719. two points,

  720. by the way,

  721. so I'm on the last

  722. point already.

  723. accusing others,

  724. but excusing

  725. ourselves.

  726. Let's get back

  727. into Matthew 7.

  728. Why worry

  729. about a speck

  730. in your friend's eye

  731. when you have

  732. a log

  733. in your own?

  734. How can you think

  735. of saying to your friend,

  736. you got to get rid

  737. of that speck

  738. in your eye

  739. when you can't see

  740. past the log

  741. in your own?

  742. You understand

  743. the difference here?

  744. A log is

  745. small or big?

  746. Making sure

  747. y'all are with me here.

  748. Okay, good.

  749. We got a big log.

  750. How do you fit

  751. a log in your eye?

  752. That seems like

  753. it would be something

  754. you would notice.

  755. Right?

  756. Can you imagine

  757. me walking up

  758. to Harlan over here

  759. and I've got a big log

  760. that's in my eye

  761. and I look at Harlan

  762. and say,

  763. hey Harlan,

  764. you got something

  765. in your eye, man?

  766. He's like,

  767. really?

  768. Are you sure?

  769. Because I'm not sure

  770. how you could see it.

  771. You might have

  772. something in your own.

  773. Do you see

  774. how nonsensical

  775. and silly

  776. and ridiculous

  777. that is?

  778. But do you see

  779. that that is

  780. what we do

  781. when we can't

  782. get over

  783. a problem

  784. we see

  785. in someone else?

  786. And look,

  787. don't make any mistake.

  788. This is not

  789. you going to

  790. someone in love

  791. and saying,

  792. brother,

  793. I know you're

  794. struggling this area.

  795. I want to help you.

  796. You can't just

  797. go on in this.

  798. It's going to hurt

  799. everyone around you.

  800. It's going to hurt you.

  801. It's going to tear us down.

  802. Please let me

  803. walk through this

  804. with you.

  805. How can I pray for you?

  806. Who can we go to

  807. to get some help?

  808. There is a way

  809. to do this, right?

  810. And we'll get more

  811. into that in a minute.

  812. But that's not

  813. what we're talking about.

  814. We're talking about

  815. what you and I do

  816. which is seeing

  817. somebody do something

  818. we don't like

  819. and often

  820. we'll go to them

  821. or sometimes

  822. we'll go to

  823. somebody else.

  824. You see that

  825. speck in his eye?

  826. Can you believe

  827. she did that?

  828. I'm not saying

  829. y'all ladies

  830. ever do that

  831. when you get around

  832. each other.

  833. I'm not saying.

  834. Look, guys,

  835. truth is,

  836. we do it too.

  837. How many of you

  838. love hearing dirt

  839. on somebody else?

  840. Don't raise your hand.

  841. They might be

  842. sitting in this room,

  843. okay?

  844. Look, how many

  845. of y'all love,

  846. of course you do.

  847. Your flesh loves it.

  848. Your nature

  849. eats that up.

  850. Tell me

  851. all the dirty details.

  852. Spare nothing.

  853. I've got to hear

  854. what happened.

  855. And the truth is,

  856. we love that so much

  857. because it helps us

  858. ignore

  859. our biggest weaknesses.

  860. It helps us ignore

  861. what's going on

  862. in our life

  863. that we hope

  864. nobody ever

  865. finds out about

  866. because then we'll

  867. be the subject

  868. of the gossip.

  869. We'll be the ones

  870. that they're talking

  871. about

  872. in the community.

  873. So how do we

  874. avoid

  875. accusing others

  876. but excusing

  877. ourselves?

  878. Well,

  879. problem number one,

  880. we judge from a distance.

  881. We've got to avoid

  882. judging from a distance.

  883. Y'all,

  884. we could spend the rest

  885. of our time here.

  886. We all do this

  887. and it's always damaging.

  888. Even if we were right,

  889. it's still wrong.

  890. Do you understand that?

  891. Judging from a distance,

  892. what do we mean by that?

  893. Making a judgment

  894. on something,

  895. making a snap judgment

  896. without having

  897. all the details,

  898. without actually

  899. knowing the situation.

  900. Y'all,

  901. like I said,

  902. we could camp here

  903. the rest of the day.

  904. We could preach

  905. an entire series

  906. about this

  907. and I pray

  908. that God would

  909. help us to change

  910. but listen,

  911. it is always

  912. going to be something

  913. we struggle with.

  914. We are always prone

  915. in our sinful flesh

  916. to make snap judgments

  917. without having

  918. all the information

  919. we're judging

  920. from a distance.

  921. We're not really

  922. part of what's going on.

  923. We may or may not

  924. be even directly affected

  925. by what's going on

  926. but we still love

  927. to sit back

  928. on our high horse

  929. and pass judgment.

  930. And now that the advent

  931. of social media

  932. is here,

  933. we have a beautiful

  934. outlet to do that.

  935. And we get on Facebook,

  936. maybe it's a private group

  937. or maybe it's just

  938. your broad Facebook page

  939. sending it out

  940. to all your friends.

  941. Whatever your preferred

  942. social media outlet is

  943. or maybe it's a little

  944. text thread

  945. that you get on

  946. and text to your buddies.

  947. Did you hear

  948. what happened to,

  949. I can't believe

  950. they would,

  951. what is wrong with them,

  952. what are they thinking,

  953. who do they think

  954. they are,

  955. fill in the blank.

  956. We are judging

  957. from a distance

  958. and it's wrong.

  959. It's hypocritical.

  960. And it's accusing others

  961. while wanting

  962. to be excused

  963. ourselves.

  964. Secondly,

  965. we judge unfairly.

  966. we judge unfairly.

  967. What do we mean by this?

  968. Well,

  969. we mean

  970. holding others,

  971. let's put it this way,

  972. holding those

  973. outside God's family

  974. to His family standards.

  975. This is another one

  976. of the points

  977. that Craig Groeschel

  978. was making.

  979. How can you expect

  980. those who do not

  981. belong to the family

  982. of God

  983. to live according

  984. to God's family standards?

  985. His Holy Spirit

  986. is not guiding them.

  987. His Holy Spirit

  988. is not leading them.

  989. He's not prompting them.

  990. They don't have

  991. the same moral compass

  992. that the Holy Spirit

  993. gives to His children.

  994. So why would we expect

  995. them to live

  996. like they do?

  997. But we do that.

  998. And we get online

  999. and we blast

  1000. those who are

  1001. clearly without Christ,

  1002. holding them,

  1003. expecting them

1004. to live up to the standard

  1005. that Christ gives

  1006. to His children.

  1007. Paul actually had

  1008. something to say

  1009. about this in Romans.

  1010. In Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

1011. he gives this horrible list

1012. of all these bad people

  1013. out there.

  1014. Go look at it.

  1015. I mean, it's bad.

1016. He didn't leave anything out.

  1017. He even included

  1018. disobedient to parents.

1019. Just in case you thought

1020. that wasn't that bad, kids.

1021. He got you on that one.

1022. He gives this big list

1023. of all these horrible sins

  1024. and he throws disobedient

  1025. to parents in there.

1026. And then he gets into

  1027. chapter 2 and verse 1

  1028. and he says,

  1029. you people probably think

  1030. you want to condemn

  1031. all those folks, right?

  1032. You may think

1033. you can condemn those people,

  1034. but you,

1035. speaking to the church in Rome,

1036. you are just as bad

1037. and you have no excuse.

  1038. The difference is

  1039. they have an excuse.

1040. They are not children of light.

1041. They are children of darkness

  1042. and they're walking

1043. in the way of darkness

  1044. and they're producing

  1045. the fruits of darkness.

1046. You don't have that excuse.

  1047. You're supposed to be

  1048. children of light,

  1049. walking in the light,

1050. producing fruits of the light.

  1051. When you say

  1052. those people are wicked

1053. and they should be punished,

  1054. you ever caught yourself

  1055. saying something like that?

1056. Maybe about the political arena?

  1057. I can't believe

  1058. those people would do

  1059. those things.

1060. They ought to be held accountable.

1061. They ought to be punished.

  1062. I'm not saying

1063. that the whole justice system

  1064. is wrong

1065. and we shouldn't hold people

  1066. accountable for their crimes.

  1067. I'm saying

  1068. you can't expect

1069. people who are not Christians

  1070. to act like Christians.

  1071. Okay?

1072. It's not going to happen.

  1073. If it does happen,

  1074. it's usually accidental.

  1075. When you say

  1076. they're wicked

1077. and they should be punished,

  1078. you're condemning yourself

1079. because you who judge others

1080. do these very same things.

1081. Maybe you don't kill babies,

1082. but maybe you don't have

1083. the respect for human life

  1084. that you should.

  1085. Maybe you don't care

  1086. about those

  1087. who are less fortunate

  1088. and vulnerable

  1089. than you.

  1090. You'll have a standard.

  1091. Well, I hate abortion.

1092. I want to get rid of it

  1093. and everybody

  1094. who does it

  1095. or supports it

  1096. in any way,

  1097. they ought to be

  1098. thrown in prison

  1099. and killed

  1100. and all that.

  1101. But you have

  1102. the same level

  1103. of disrespect

  1104. or lack of compassion

  1105. for others

  1106. who are less,

  1107. who are more vulnerable,

  1108. less able to care

  1109. for themselves.

  1110. There's a principle there.

1111. Yes, it's wrong to murder.

  1112. Yes, it's horrible

  1113. to kill babies

  1114. who cannot defend themselves.

  1115. It's unthinkable.

  1116. But the principle is

  1117. we value human life.

  1118. We care about those

1119. who can't care for themselves

  1120. and that goes

  1121. across the board.

  1122. So be careful

  1123. in your harsh judgment

  1124. of others.

  1125. Instead, say,

  1126. how can we

  1127. as children of God

  1128. help these people

  1129. who are clearly struggling?

  1130. We're going to oppose

  1131. the legislation

  1132. when it's there.

  1133. We're going to do

  1134. whatever we can

  1135. to help these people.

  1136. We're going to help

  1137. these women

1138. who are in this situation.

  1139. We're going to try

  1140. to give them alternatives.

1141. We're going to reach out

  1142. to people

  1143. with the life-changing message

  1144. of Jesus

  1145. because that is what

  1146. can actually help them.

  1147. Hatred will not.

  1148. So,

  1149. you may think

  1150. you can condemn

  1151. these people,

1152. but you're just as bad.

1153. And I think that brings us

  1154. all the way back

1155. to that Craig Groeschel quote

1156. I shared with you earlier.

  1157. Your harshest criticism

  1158. often reveals

  1159. your greatest weakness.

1160. And you may not even

1161. realize it at the time.

  1162. You ever

  1163. pointed out something,

  1164. man,

  1165. that's so annoying

  1166. when he does that

  1167. and somebody's looking

  1168. at you like,

1169. you realize you do that?

1170. Somebody I was talking to

  1171. just recently said,

  1172. man,

  1173. they talk so much.

  1174. I swear,

1175. they just will never shut up.

  1176. They won't stop talking.

1177. And I'm looking at the person like,

  1178. do you realize

  1179. you don't,

  1180. do you?

1181. You talk quite a bit yourself,

  1182. man.

  1183. And look,

1184. we all roll with it,

  1185. okay?

  1186. And that's a silly example.

  1187. But the truth is,

1188. we often see in others

  1189. and point out

1190. what we hate in ourselves.

  1191. So,

1192. what do we do then?

  1193. We excuse ourselves.

  1194. Excusing our sin problems

1195. as just part of our identity.

1196. That's just who we are.

  1197. So you don't understand.

  1198. You don't know me.

1199. I was raised that way.

  1200. I'm Irish, man.

  1201. I'm Italian.

  1202. I'm Latino.

  1203. Whatever it is.

  1204. You know,

1205. we throw it on our heritage.

  1206. Well,

1207. you should have met my dad.

1208. You should have met my mom.

  1209. You would understand

1210. why I am the way I am.

  1211. And we excuse ourselves

  1212. and we actually,

  1213. in doing that,

1214. and that's not the only way

  1215. we do it.

  1216. Man,

  1217. well,

  1218. I was just tired.

  1219. Yeah,

  1220. I know I said something hateful.

  1221. I know I did something terrible.

  1222. But listen,

  1223. that's not who I am,

  1224. okay?

  1225. That was just,

  1226. it was a one-off thing.

1227. It was an isolated incident.

  1228. That's not me.

  1229. Have you ever said,

  1230. that's not me?

  1231. You don't understand.

  1232. We're giving ourselves excuse.

1233. We're looking at our sin nature

1234. that God wants to change

  1235. and we're saying,

  1236. no,

  1237. that's not really a problem.

1238. That's just part of me.

1239. You just have to accept that

  1240. about me.

  1241. When in reality,

1242. God wants to change you.

1243. And when you excuse it,

  1244. he can't change it.

1245. You are not who you say you are.

1246. You are who he says you are.

1247. If you have accepted the payment

1248. of Jesus Christ on the cross

  1249. for your sins,

1250. and you believe he rose from the dead

1251. and he offered you eternal life,

1252. you put your faith in him

  1253. and said,

  1254. God,

1255. I want to be your child.

  1256. I can't save myself.

1257. You need to save me.

1258. Then you became the child of God.

1259. He now sets the rules for your life.

  1260. He has regenerated you.

  1261. He's made you new.

  1262. He's given you a new nature.

  1263. And he's saying,

  1264. this new nature

1265. has to replace your old sin nature.

  1266. So, we judge unfairly

1267. because we excuse our sin problems

1268. as part of our identity.

  1269. I'm just stubborn.

  1270. I'm just impatient.

1271. I just get mad sometimes.

  1272. I run hot.

1273. You ever heard that one?

  1274. I just have a hard time

  1275. forgiving others.

1276. I have a hard time trusting others.

  1277. I'm just shy

  1278. when in reality,

  1279. we're self-absorbed.

  1280. We're full of fear.

1281. And God wants to change us.

1282. To do powerful things through us.

  1283. So,

  1284. what's the point?

  1285. Let's look back at Matthew 7.

  1286. We'll be done.

  1287. Matthew 7.

  1288. What does it say

  1289. about seeing clearly?

  1290. First,

  1291. verse 5,

  1292. hypocrite,

1293. first get rid of the log

  1294. in your own eye.

1295. Then you will see clearly.

  1296. You'll see well enough

1297. to deal with the speck

  1298. in your friend's eye.

  1299. Do you understand

  1300. that it's never wrong?

  1301. Let me rephrase that.

  1302. It's not always wrong

  1303. to judge.

  1304. It's always wrong

  1305. to judge hypocritically.

  1306. It's not always wrong

  1307. to judge.

  1308. We have to judge

  1309. one another sometimes.

  1310. Recently,

  1311. something came out

  1312. about a pastor

  1313. in our general area.

  1314. Something terrible.

  1315. God,

  1316. his church,

  1317. his church,

  1318. had to pass judgment

  1319. at that time.

1320. They had to make a judgment.

  1321. There are moments

1322. when we have to judge

  1323. one another.

  1324. But we do it

  1325. from a posture

  1326. of our heart

  1327. that is trying

  1328. to be like Jesus.

  1329. Not trying to place

  1330. ourselves

  1331. as better

  1332. than anyone else.

  1333. Or as exempt

  1334. from any criticism

  1335. ourselves

  1336. or judgment

  1337. ourselves.

  1338. The Bible

  1339. has something

  1340. to say about this.

  1341. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1342. and verse 15.

  1343. We will speak

  1344. the truth

  1345. in love

  1346. growing in every way

  1347. more and more

  1348. like Christ.

  1349. That's how you become

  1350. more like Jesus

  1351. when you speak

  1352. the truth

  1353. in love.

  1354. You know

  1355. what's not loving?

  1356. Going on social media

  1357. and bashing one another.

  1358. That's not loving.

  1359. You don't speak

  1360. the truth

  1361. in love

1362. in front of a crowd

  1363. when you haven't

  1364. gone to that person

  1365. privately

  1366. and spoken

  1367. the truth

  1368. in love.

  1369. Another verse

  1370. Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  1371. and verse 16

  1372. the day is coming

  1373. when God will judge

  1374. everyone's secret life.

  1375. Is that enough

  1376. for you?

  1377. Is it enough

  1378. for you to know

  1379. that God is

  1380. coming to judge?

  1381. The wrong

  1382. that you see

  1383. that you have

  1384. such a hard time

  1385. accepting

  1386. that just gets

  1387. under your skin

  1388. and you can't

  1389. bear it

  1390. and you have

  1391. to just do

  1392. something about it?

  1393. Is it enough

  1394. for you to know

1395. that God will judge it?

  1396. God will right

  1397. the wrongs

1398. or is that not enough?

  1399. Do you have

  1400. to get involved?

  1401. Do you have

  1402. to stick your neck

  1403. into it?

  1404. There are times

  1405. when we will

  1406. have to judge.

  1407. Something is

  1408. directly involving us.

  1409. Something is

  1410. directly affecting us

  1411. and it's

1412. we have to step in

  1413. and in the love

  1414. of Christ

  1415. with as small

  1416. a group

  1417. as possible

  1418. we have to say

  1419. we have to deal

  1420. with this.

  1421. Please let us

  1422. help you deal

  1423. with this.

  1424. But

  1425. we can see

  1426. clearly

  1427. when we judge

  1428. how Jesus

  1429. wants us to judge.

  1430. When we deal

  1431. with the issue

  1432. ourselves

  1433. and that's not

  1434. saying you have

  1435. to be sinless

  1436. or you can't

  1437. ever point out

  1438. anybody else's sin

  1439. but it's

  1440. my heart

  1441. has to be

  1442. pursuing God

  1443. for me

  1444. to be able

  1445. to go

  1446. and deal

  1447. with somebody

  1448. else.

  1449. That will

  1450. allow me

  1451. to see

  1452. clearly.

  1453. And you

  1454. know what

  1455. happens

  1456. when you

  1457. see clearly?

  1458. You see

  1459. the nature

  1460. of Jesus.

  1461. So when you

  1462. go to deal

  1463. with somebody

  1464. else's problem

  1465. you do it

  1466. how Jesus

  1467. would.

  1468. You do it

  1469. according to

  1470. his nature.

  1471. You're not

  1472. just carrying

  1473. his name

  1474. into this

  1475. conversation

  1476. you're also

  1477. carrying

  1478. his nature

  1479. into this

  1480. conversation.

  1481. This is the

  1482. truth that I

  1483. firmly believe

  1484. and will stand

  1485. on is being

  1486. taught in this

  1487. passage.

  1488. You want to

  1489. talk about it

  1490. with me?

  1491. You want to

  1492. dive further?

  1493. Let's meet

  1494. up and we'll

  1495. talk about it.

  1496. But listen

  1497. here's our

  1498. takeaway today.

  1499. See a problem

  1500. take it to

  1501. Jesus.

  1502. See a problem

  1503. tell it to

  1504. Jesus.

  1505. How many of

  1506. y'all remember

  1507. the song?

  1508. Tell it to

  1509. Jesus

  1510. tell it to

  1511. Jesus

  1512. there's no

  1513. other

  1514. such a

  1515. friend or

  1516. brother

  1517. tell it

  1518. to

  1519. Jesus

  1520. alone.

  1521. Yeah thank

  1522. you.

  1523. There's a

  1524. couple of

  1525. you.

  1526. Old song

  1527. been around

  1528. a long

  1529. time

  1530. probably

  1531. hadn't

  1532. sung a

  1533. whole lot

  1534. anymore

  1535. but there

  1536. is a

  1537. truth there

  1538. that you

  1539. and I

  1540. have to

  1541. wrap our

  1542. heads

  1543. around.

  1544. Do you

  1545. see a

  1546. problem?

  1547. Tell it

  1548. to

  1549. Jesus.

  1550. He'll

  1551. tell you

  1552. what to

  1553. do

  1554. next.

  1555. Don't

  1556. tell it

  1557. to your

  1558. buddy.

  1559. Don't

  1560. tell it

  1561. to your

  1562. girlfriend.

  1563. Don't

  1564. tell it

  1565. to your

  1566. little

  1567. friend group.

  1568. Don't

  1569. tell it

  1570. to your

  1571. Facebook

  1572. group.

  1573. Don't

  1574. tell it

  1575. to all

  1576. the people

  1577. that you

  1578. think will

  1579. give you

  1580. a sympathetic

  1581. ear.

  1582. Tell it

  1583. to Jesus.

  1584. He'll

  1585. give you

  1586. his nature

  1587. to deal

  1588. with it.

  1589. Would you

  1590. bow your

  1591. heads with

  1592. me now?

  1593. God

  1594. please get

  1595. this truth

  1596. across to

  1597. us.

  1598. You warn

  1599. us more

  1600. in the

  1601. New Testament.

  1602. You warn

  1603. us more

  1604. about the

  1605. dangers of

  1606. disunity

  1607. sinning.

  1608. God

  1609. more

  1610. than

  1611. anything

  1612. else.

  1613. This is

  1614. the kind

  1615. of thing

  1616. that can

  1617. tear

  1618. churches

  1619. apart

  1620. from the

  1621. inside.

  1622. We think

  1623. our biggest

  1624. threats are

  1625. on the

  1626. outside,

  1627. but God,

  1628. our biggest

  1629. threats is

  1630. each other.

  1631. We are

  1632. flawed,

  1633. sinful

  1634. people.

  1635. By your

  1636. spirit,

  1637. through your

  1638. grace,

  1639. we can

  1640. stop sinning

  1641. more and

  1642. more,

  1643. but we're

  1644. never ultimately

  1645. going to

  1646. stop sinning

  1647. until we

  1648. get to

  1649. heaven someday.

  1650. We're

  1651. still dealing

  1652. with this

  1653. flesh.

  1654. So it's

  1655. inevitable

  1656. that we're

  1657. going to

  1658. see problems.

  1659. It's

  1660. harder for

  1661. us to

  1662. see them

  1663. in ourselves.

  1664. It's

  1665. easier for

  1666. us to

  1667. see them

  1668. in others.

  1669. But God,

  1670. how we

  1671. deal with

  1672. this,

  1673. it's

  1674. everything.

  1675. It's

  1676. so important.

  1677. Let us

  1678. see your

  1679. nature,

  1680. not just

  1681. carry your

  1682. name.

  1683. Let us

  1684. carry your

  1685. nature.

  1686. Let it

  1687. infect us,

  1688. get deep

  1689. inside of

  1690. us,

  1691. so when we

  1692. see a

  1693. problem,

  1694. when we

  1695. see something

  1696. bad happen,

  1697. our response

  1698. is not,

  1699. ha,

  1700. I knew it.

  1701. Told you

  1702. so.

  1703. Our response

  1704. is grief.

  1705. Our response

  1706. is godly

  1707. sorrow,

  1708. and we take

  1709. it to you.

  1710. God,

  1711. there's got to

  1712. be a

  1713. difference

  1714. in how

  1715. your people

  1716. handle these

  1717. problems,

  1718. than how

  1719. those without

  1720. you handle

  1721. this stuff.

  1722. Let our

  1723. church be

  1724. the beacon,

  1725. let our

  1726. church be

  1727. the ones

  1728. who are

  1729. different.

  1730. Say,

  1731. I know

  1732. those First

  1733. Baptist

  1734. people,

  1735. I know

  1736. they're not

  1737. going to

  1738. get online,

  1739. talk about

  1740. each other.

  1741. I know

  1742. they're going

  1743. to keep

  1744. family business

  1745. private.

  1746. I know

  1747. they're not

  1748. just going

  1749. to bash

  1750. what's going

  1751. on in the

  1752. community,

  1753. or what's

  1754. going on

  1755. with something

  1756. they don't

  1757. like.

  1758. I know

  1759. they are

  1760. going to

  1761. take it

  1762. to Jesus

  1763. and they're

  1764. going to

  1765. leave it

  1766. there.

  1767. And if

  1768. it's

  1769. something

  1770. that Jesus

  1771. says,

  1772. you've got

  1773. to come

  1774. together and

  1775. deal with

  1776. this,

  1777. then they're

  1778. going to

  1779. do it

  1780. according to

  1781. how he

  1782. teaches them

  1783. in Scripture.

  1784. They're

  1785. going to

  1786. do it

  1787. according to

  1788. his nature

  1789. and not

  1790. ours.

  1791. God,

  1792. convict

  1793. us.

  1794. We'll give

  1795. you the glory

  1796. in Jesus'

  1797. name.

  1798. Amen.

  1799. Church,

  1800. there might

  1801. be somebody

  1802. that you need

  1803. to go to

  1804. and you need

  1805. while our

  1806. heads are

  1807. bowed for

  1808. you to

  1809. get up

  1810. and go to

  1811. somebody else

  1812. and say,

  1813. please forgive

  1814. me.

  1815. That's what

  1816. church is

  1817. about.

  1818. That's what

  1819. family is

  1820. about.

  1821. Forgiveness,

  1822. relationships.

  1823. She talked

  1824. about how

  1825. relationships are

  1826. important in

  1827. Bulgaria.

  1828. They're important

  1829. here too.

  1830. It's how it

  1831. works.

  1832. It's how we

  1833. relate to one

  1834. another.

  1835. Would you

  1836. bow your

  1837. heads with

  1838. me?

  1839. And we're

  1840. going to have

  1841. a moment of

  1842. quiet prayer.

  1843. Jared's going

  1844. to play.

  1845. He's going to

  1846. sing something

  1847. over us.

  1848. We're going

  1849. to have a

  1850. moment of

  1851. quiet prayer.

  1852. If you need

  1853. to come

  1854. down front,

  1855. talk to me

  1856. about something.

  1857. I'm here.

  1858. If you just

  1859. want to stay

  1860. in your seat,

  1861. do business

  1862. with God,

  1863. if you want

  1864. to boldly

  1865. get up and

  1866. go approach

  1867. someone,

  1868. ask for

  1869. prayer,

  1870. ask for

  1871. forgiveness,

  1872. whatever the

  1873. Holy Spirit's

  1874. doing in your

  1875. heart right now,

  1876. say yes to it.
