  1. How much junk have you collected?

  2. A lot, right?

  3. How much is in your storage shed, your garage, storage closets, under the bed storage, attic storage.

  4. ! We were just in Wisconsin where they have basements.

  5. That seems to collect storage.

  6. How many of y'all think we need more storage around the church, maybe?

  7. How much junk do we collect, man?

  8. We collect a lot, don't we?

  9. We do indeed.

  10. Anybody know the name Marie Kondo?

  11. Yeah.

  12. Can you guys pull up the picture we've got of her?

  13. Marie Kondo.

  14. She had a question that she would tell people to ask when they're looking into their junk,

  15. their valuables that they've collected through the years.

  16. Does anybody know what that question is?

  17. Can we say it together?

  18. Does it spark joy?

  19. That was like an ice water bath down my back when I first heard that.

  20. Like, that's what's wrong with America today.

  21. We're looking at all this excess that we've collected over the years, and we're like, does this spark joy to me?

  22. I don't know.

  23. Do you need it?

  24. That's probably a better question in my mind.

  25. But Marie Kondo got real famous.

  26. She got a Netflix special called Tidying Up, and the whole idea of it was kind of capitalizing on all of our excess,

  27. and she challenged people to sort through it and just go through stuff and clean it out, right?

  28. Does it spark joy?

  29. Anyway, probably a real nice, shiny way of asking, do you really need this in your life?

  30. Now, this was not a new concept.

  31. People have been going through, trying to sort through their stuff for generations.

  32. But somehow, generations keep passing down their junk to the next generations.

  33. And then what happens?

  34. You have estate sales, and people try to sell off the junk from their parents and grandparents, etc.

  35. Now, look, sometimes there are family heirlooms that you get to hold on to, and those are cherished for generations,

  36. and that's always pretty cool to see.

  37. But let's not be crazy, because often the sorting process reveals that it's not all treasure.

  38. A lot of it's trash.

  39. You say, what in the world does this have to do with the parables of Jesus?

  40. Well, this is exactly the kind of sorting process that Jesus is talking about in Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  41. Would you go with me to Matthew chapter 13, verses 47 through 50.

    Matthew 13:47–50

  42. While you're turning there, I'm going to give you a piece of really good news.

  43. This is our 12th and final week in the Stories of the Kingdom series about the parables of Jesus.

  44. Can we get an amen on that?

  45. There you go.

  46. I've enjoyed it.

  47. I'm glad to move on to another section of Scripture.

  48. However, I've really enjoyed this, and I hope that we can close it out well today.

  49. We haven't covered every parable that Jesus told, but we've gone through the book of Matthew.

  50. By the way, we were not just doing a study of the parables of Jesus.

  51. I was also on the sly taking you through a study of the gospel of Matthew.

  52. And we've done that all throughout it, and we have kind of covered the themes that Matthew wrote about

  53. from his time walking with Jesus and recording what he had to say.

  54. So Matthew chapter 13, let's look down at verse 47.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  55. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a large net thrown into the sea.

  56. It collected every kind of fish.

  57. When it was full, they dragged it ashore, sat down, and gathered the good fish into containers,

  58. but threw out the worthless ones.

  59. So it will be at the end of the age.

  60. The angels will go out, separate the evil people from the righteous,

  61. and throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  62. Have you noticed that Jesus' parables always ended like that?

  63. Maybe not always, but frequently.

  64. Weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  65. It's like he was warning you of something to come, right?

  66. Let's look at that.

  67. Let's take it seriously.

  68. Y'all, a pastor can get up, and he can talk about any number of things.

  69. But I don't think it's ever wrong to talk about what Jesus himself talked about.

  70. So that's what we've been doing in these last 12 weeks.

  71. And I pray that we're able to get a good understanding of what he was warning us about and teaching us in this passage.

  72. Let's pray together.

  73. God, I pray right now that you would use this story of the net, the sorting,

  74. this process separating the trash from the treasure, separating the good from the evil.

  75. How does this apply to us?

  76. What can we learn from this?

  77. I pray that by your spirit, you would teach each one of us something that would change us, transform us from the inside out.

  78. We'll give you all the glory for it in Jesus' name.

  79. Amen.

  80. All right.

  81. So what are they talking about?

  82. He paints a very picturesque story here where you've got these people using what is called a dragnet.

  83. All right.

  84. So here's the idea.

  85. They have this dragnet, and they would stand.

  86. They would stretch it out.

  87. You see the net, the after results, the catch that they brought in from the fish.

  88. It would bring in all sorts of fish.

  89. But what they would do is they would stand on either side, and there would be a row of people, probably 8 to 12 people,

  90. or maybe even more depending on the size of the dragnet.

  91. It was also called a send net.

  92. I don't know if that's from the river Sen.

  93. I don't know.

  94. That's a whole different thing.

  95. Let's just call it a dragnet, all right?

  96. So the dragnet would be out there in the shallow water, and they would have it stretched out to its full capacity.

  97. And they would have these weights on the bottom of the dragnet to keep it underwater,

  98. and they would have these floats or bobbers attached to the top to keep it afloat on the top.

  99. And so they have this net just perfectly like creating this wall in the ocean, of course, in the shallow waters near the beach.

  100. So as they would, fish would come in, there would be kind of a pocket at the bottom that the fish would get trapped in.

  101. And eventually, when they felt like the net was full enough, they would all start retreating back toward the shore,

  102. and they would lay it out, and there would be thousands of fish caught in this dragnet.

  103. Now, normally, all these references would be about the Sea of Galilee,

  104. and there would be over 20 different kinds of fish, probably, in the Sea of Galilee.

  105. Many of those fish would be inedible, useless, not really good for much of anything.

  106. You need to throw them back in.

  107. So the sorting process would happen.

  108. And everybody would gather along the beach, and you'd have all those people that were out there fishing,

  109. and maybe some others who weren't strong enough to go out and manage the dragnet in the waters,

  110. but they could sort fish.

  111. So they'd be sitting there, going through, finding all these different varieties of fish,

  112. throwing some back in, and keeping the ones that were good and useful.

  113. So Jesus is referencing something that these people understood, many of them had partaken of,

  114. certainly all of them had seen, had experienced at some level.

  115. But what's he really trying to teach here?

  116. He's not teaching fishing methods, although it does sound fun to catch fish with a dragnet, right?

  117. For those of you who have sat in a rowboat, or sat on a dock, or sat on a shore,

  118. with your line in the water for hour after hour, and nothing seems to bite, right?

  119. It's maddening.

  120. Be kind of cool to go out there and spend a few minutes with a big dragnet,

  121. and have thousands of fish come in, even if you couldn't use most of them.

  122. Still be fun.

  123. But that's not what he's talking about here.

  124. He's talking about the sorting process.

  125. That's where the focus is.

  126. So there are two different emphases.

  127. First, the idea of the catch.

  128. The idea is the sorting doesn't happen at first, okay?

  129. So in your bulletins, if you're taking notes, and there should be a pen in front of you,

  130. point number one is God's invitation is inclusive.

  131. What do we mean by that?

  132. It includes everybody.

  133. It includes anybody and everybody who wants to come into the net.

  134. God holds the net wide open for all to come.

  135. Boy, we can be excited about that, right?

  136. We can love that.

  137. Very excited about that.

  138. 1 Timothy 2 and verse 4 sheds a little light on that.

  139. It says, God our Savior wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

  140. That is a wide open net.

  141. I want them all.

  142. I want everybody, says the Lord.

  143. Lord, I'm inviting all, everyone.

  144. The Bible teaches very clearly Jesus died not for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole world.

  145. God so loved the what?

  146. World.

  147. Let's say that together.

  148. Y'all know that.

  149. Verse John 3, 16.

  150. Ready?

  151. For God so loved the world.

  152. There you go.

  153. I watched the sermon last week, and he really got y'all talking, okay?

  154. So I'm going to try to get y'all talking a little bit, too.

  155. Y'all did great.

  156. I was so proud of you.

  157. He did a wonderful...

  158. How many of y'all were glad that Jordan came and preached to us last Sunday?

  159. Wasn't that awesome?

  160. I never even met the guy.

  161. We've had phone conversations, but we had a very trusted mutual friend, and he talked a little bit about that last week.

  162. I'm glad he came and did a wonderful job here.

  163. So we're going to talk a little bit today, but this idea that God's invitation is inclusive.

  164. The sorting process doesn't happen at first.

  165. Everyone is invited.

  166. The invitation is extended.

  167. There's a truth here.

  168. God's net, so to speak, is wide open for everyone to experience his love and salvation.

  169. He created everyone, and everyone has equal opportunity.

  170. I believe God's an equal opportunity creator.

  171. I believe God has given each one of us an equal opportunity to respond to him in faith.

  172. The sad truth is, we're not all gonna.

  173. Not everyone that God created will respond to him in faith.

  174. Many will reject.

  175. Some will seem to accept.

  176. But the truth is, in their heart, they never did.

  177. God knows how all that's gonna shake out in the end.

  178. He's gonna be in charge of the sorting process.

  179. But what we have to worry about is, God's invitation extends to all.

  180. So what we then take away, we don't go and discriminate who we invite into the net.

  181. We'll take any fish who wanna swim in, right?

  182. Do you know any fishermen who would say, no, no, no, I don't want that fish.

  183. I don't want that fish.

  184. We'll take it, man.

  185. Now, we might throw them back in once we get them on the boat,

  186. but we'll take anything that wants to bite.

  187. I say that like I'm a fisherman.

  188. I'm not a fisherman.

  189. But I can imagine.

  190. Revelation 22, 17.

  191. You don't have to turn there.

  192. I've got it on the screen unless you'd like to.

  193. But Revelation 22, 17.

  194. The spirit and the bride say, what does that say?

  195. Come.

  196. We can do better.

  197. Ready?

  198. The spirit and the bride say?

  199. Come.

  200. Let anyone who hears this say?

  201. Come.

  202. Let anyone who is thirsty?

  203. Come.

  204. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.

  205. What is God's invitation to man?

  206. Come.

  207. Come to him.

  208. Come to me, he says.

  209. Come to me.

  210. I'm the answer.

  211. Whatever stage of life you're in,

  212. if there's still breath in your lungs,

  213. the answer is come to him.

  214. Come to him for salvation.

  215. Come to him for rest.

  216. Come for him for peace.

  217. Come to him for mercy.

  218. Come to him for forgiveness.

  219. Come to Jesus.

  220. That is always and forever the invitation.

  221. So, question.

  222. Do we cast our nets as widely as Jesus casts his?

  223. Or do we create barriers for certain people?

  224. That's the hard thing.

  225. Do we cast nets or do we create barriers?

  226. Do we allow any fish to come in or are we selective?

  227. Look, we might say that anyone can come.

  228. Anyone can come and be a part of our fellowship of believers.

  229. Anyone can come and experience the goodness of God

  230. and the blessings of Christian community.

  231. The problem is,

  232. sometimes not as much with our words,

  233. but with our actions,

  234. we create barriers for those very people

  235. that we're inviting in.

  236. We say, no, no, no.

  237. You're not the kind of fish that belongs here.

  238. You're not the kind of fish that we're interested in.

  239. We're going to throw you out.

  240. The problem is, that's not our job.

  241. Our job is to do what the master commanded

  242. and go be fishers of what?

  243. Men and women too, by the way.

  244. Go be fishers of people.

  245. That's who God came to seek and to save.

  246. He'll work out the sorting process at the end.

  247. So, do we cast nets or do we create barriers?

  248. Number two.

  249. Before we get there, I want to share a quote with you.

  250. Martin Luther was one of the great fathers

  251. of the Protestant Reformation

  252. that kind of split off from the Catholic Church

  253. and from that grew Baptists and Methodists

  254. and all these evangelical Christian churches

  255. that you see around.

  256. Martin Luther was a key father in that movement.

  257. Read about him in history if you haven't already.

  258. And he said this,

  259. it is the nature of all hypocrites and false prophets.

  260. We got any of those in the room by uplifted hand?

  261. You're a hypocrite or a false prophet.

  262. Anybody?

  263. Look, I try not to be a false prophet.

  264. Thank you, Candy.

  265. But I will raise my hand on hypocrite

  266. because the truth is I am a hypocrite sometimes.

  267. And all y'all can be too, all right?

  268. So we're not alone.

  269. It is the nature of all hypocrites and false prophets

  270. to create a conscience where there is none.

  271. Y'all, this is getting a little bit deep,

  272. but we're going to try to break it down, all right?

  273. Create a conscience where there is none.

  274. And then, after they've done that,

  275. to cause conscience to disappear

  276. where it actually does exist.

  277. What's he saying?

  278. Hypocritical Christians are real good

  279. at making rules that God never made

  280. and ignoring rules that God did make.

  281. You know what his rule is?

  282. Love people like I love them.

  283. Love me like I've told you to

  284. with all your heart, with all your mind,

  285. with all your soul, with all your strength.

  286. And love your neighbor as yourself.

  287. God's rules are pretty simple,

  288. but man, are they hard.

  289. So instead of obeying that,

  290. we go back to Old Testament laws

  291. that don't apply to us under grace anymore,

  292. or we'll just go create our own

  293. like we saw the Pharisees do

  294. in the Jewish system.

  295. Sorry.

  296. And Jesus kept butting heads with it.

  297. And they're saying,

  298. well, Jesus, you're not walking

  299. according to our laws and systems and traditions.

  300. They say, listen, you missed the point.

  301. You're creating a conscience

  302. where I never created one.

  303. But you're ignoring the conscience

  304. or even causing it to disappear

  305. that I did give you.

  306. That's hypocritical.

  307. And often, it can even get into being

  308. a false prophet.

  309. Why?

  310. Because you're painting a different picture

  311. of Jesus for people.

  312. Even without trying to,

  313. you're showing people

  314. that Jesus is someone different

  315. than who he actually is

  316. and who he revealed himself to be.

  317. That's being a false prophet.

  318. I don't want to be that.

  319. I don't want to do that.

  320. I want to stick closely to what he said,

  321. to what he did,

  322. to how he lived.

  323. So I think Martin Luther's quote

  324. is very appropriate

  325. for those of us,

  326. especially those of us in the room.

  327. I'm not going to make you lift your hands,

  328. but those of us in the room

  329. who have been Christians

  330. for most of our lives,

  331. grew up in church most of our lives,

  332. it's pretty easy

  333. for us to start to

  334. equate the traditions

  335. that we grew up with

  336. with Bible truth.

  337. Y'all, the Bible never says

  338. that we have to sit in pews

  339. in a church building.

  340. The Bible never says

  341. you have to have both

  342. an organ and a piano.

  343. The Bible never says

  344. that you have to use a podium.

  345. The Bible never says lots of,

  346. now, doesn't mean

  347. those things are wrong.

  348. Those things can serve

  349. their purpose in their season.

  350. The Bible never says

  351. that you have to

  352. wear a clown suit to church, right?

  353. The Bible never says

  354. you have to wear

  355. a big red nose to church.

  356. Thankfully, that'd be weird.

  357. But I guarantee you

  358. some people who didn't grow up

  359. how we grew up

  360. might come into church

  361. and think some of the things

  362. that we do are weird.

  363. Okay, fine.

  364. Are we leading people

  365. closer to Jesus

  366. by our traditions

  367. that we have latched onto

  368. or are we forcing people

  369. to get over them

  370. to get to Jesus?

  371. Does that make sense?

  372. Are we forcing people

  373. to climb over

  374. all these extra obstacles

  375. or barriers

  376. that we've created

  377. just to get to Jesus

  378. who is who we want them

  379. to get to after all, right?

  380. All right, that's the point.

  381. We're going to move on

  382. to number two now.

  383. God's net is inclusive.

  384. God's invitation is inclusive.

  385. But heaven's entry

  386. is exclusive.

  387. You could take this

  388. as the bad news

  389. if you wanted to.

  390. The truth is

  391. it's justice.

  392. It's justice in God's eyes.

  393. And who are we to say no?

  394. To all those

  395. who reject his son,

  396. they are excluded.

  397. They're thrown back.

  398. That's the picture

  399. he paints for us.

  400. He paints this picture

  401. of all these different fish

  402. being in the net.

  403. Look back at Matthew 13.

  404. When the net was full,

  405. they dragged it ashore,

  406. they sat down,

  407. and they gathered

  408. the good fish

  409. into containers,

  410. but they threw out

  411. the worthless ones.

  412. We have any idea

  413. what that is?

  414. It's just a speaker.

  415. All right.

  416. It's just the speaker

  417. likes what we're talking

  418. about in here.

  419. All right.

  420. It wants to have a part.

  421. All right.

  422. Don't worry about it.

  423. Just a little white noise,

  424. background noise,

  425. no big deal.

  426. Heaven's entry

  427. is exclusive.

  428. Unfortunately,

  429. there are going to be

  430. some fish thrown back.

  431. That's kind of

  432. Jesus' point here, right?

  433. There's going to be

  434. some fish

  435. not allowed in.

  436. There's going to be

  437. people excluded.

  438. Guess what?

  439. Not everybody

  440. made it on the ark.

  441. Remember Noah and the ark

  442. and the flooding

  443. of the earth?

  444. Not everybody

  445. made it on.

  446. Actually,

  447. very few

  448. made it on.

  449. Well,

  450. the Bible teaches that.

  451. Narrow is the gate

  452. that leads to life,

  453. but wide is the path

  454. that leads to destruction.

  455. More will choose destruction

  456. rather than life.

  457. Hey,

  458. let's go to Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  459. Back up a few chapters,

  460. would you?

  461. Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  462. before we end up

  463. back in Matthew 13.

  464. So,

  465. just a couple of pages,

  466. probably Matthew 7

  467. and let's look at

  468. verse 13.

  469. Matthew 7, 13.

  470. Enter through

  471. the narrow gate,

  472. for the gate is wide

  473. and the road is broad

  474. that leads to destruction.

  475. There are many

  476. who go through it.

  477. How narrow is the gate

  478. and difficult is the road

  479. that leads to life

  480. and few that find it.

  481. Matt's a hero.

  482. Let's give him a clap.

  483. Thank you, Matt.

  484. I don't know if everybody

  485. in the back of the room

  486. could hear it,

  487. but it was pretty loud up here,

  488. so thank you, sir.

  489. Narrow is the gate.

  490. Difficult is the road

  491. that leads to life.

  492. How many of you

  493. have been on the road

  494. to life for a while

  495. and you'd say,

  496. yeah, it is difficult sometimes?

  497. Anybody?

  498. Is it just me?

  499. I think some of y'all

  500. not raising your hand

  501. also believe the road

  502. to life can be difficult

  503. at times, right?

  504. It's not just me.

  505. Look,

  506. let's keep reading.

  507. Verse 15.

  508. Be on your guard

  509. against false prophets

  510. who come to you

  511. in sheep's clothing

  512. but inwardly

  513. are ravaging wolves.

  514. Hey,

  515. there's some of those

  516. false prophets

  517. we were talking about

  518. just a minute ago.

  519. We like to think

  520. of false prophets

  521. always as those

  522. who are preaching

  523. something totally different

  524. than the Bible.

  525. It's not hidden at all.

  526. It's just like,

  527. man,

  528. Jesus isn't God.

  529. Joe Schmo is God,

  530. be it Mohammed

  531. or Confucius

  532. or whoever,

  533. Buddha.

  534. Usually those

  535. aren't the false prophets

  536. who lead God's people astray.

  537. Usually it's the ones

  538. who disguise themselves

  539. in sheep's clothing

  540. and they'll preach something

  541. that's very similar

  542. to what Jesus taught

  543. and what Jesus lived.

  544. But they'll throw

  545. extra obstacles in there.

  546. They'll say,

  547. yeah,

  548. but you also gotta do this.

  549. Yeah,

  550. but you also gotta give me money

  551. and buy me my second jet.

  552. Or,

  553. yeah,

  554. but you gotta go

  555. say 40 Hail Marys

  556. or go confess

  557. and light this many candles

  558. and do all these

  559. extra things

  560. to have right standing

  561. before God

  562. and forgiveness

  563. with God.

  564. And I'm sorry,

  565. look,

  566. some of these people

  567. are well-meaning.

  568. But that's preaching

  569. a different gospel

  570. than Jesus brought us.

  571. That's not the good news.

  572. So be careful of that.

  573. And then jump down,

  574. would you,

  575. to verse 21.

  576. There are all kinds of things

  577. that might lead people

  578. onto that wide,

  579. broad,

  580. more easy path

  581. away from the narrow,

  582. more difficult path,

  583. but you don't wanna end up

  584. where that wide path

  585. takes you.

  586. Verse 21,

  587. not everyone who says to me,

  588. Lord, Lord,

  589. will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  590. Only the one

  591. who does the will

  592. of my Father in heaven.

  593. What is the will

  594. of the Father in heaven?

  595. That all would be saved.

  596. That all would turn to Him.

  597. So if you turn to Him,

  598. then you're doing the will

  599. of His Father in heaven.

  600. And you will be saved.

  601. He will keep you

  602. on that narrow path.

  603. But if you don't,

  604. then you're stuck

  605. on that wide path

  606. until you do the will

  607. of the Father in heaven.

  608. On that day,

  609. many will say to me,

  610. Lord, Lord,

  611. didn't we prophesy

  612. in your name?

  613. Yes,

  614. but you were a false prophet.

  615. Didn't we drive out

  616. demons in your name?

  617. Didn't we do many miracles

  618. in your name?

  619. Didn't we do all this stuff

  620. that we thought

  621. you would have liked?

  622. Seemed like a Christian

  623. kind of thing.

  624. Seemed like a religious

  625. type deal.

  626. Seemed like a church

  627. kind of thing.

  628. Seemed like a Jesus

  629. type thing.

  630. We did all this stuff

  631. for you for all these years.

  632. I was a good,

  633. upstanding citizen.

  634. I was a member

  635. of First Baptist Church

  636. for how many years?

  637. What do you mean

  638. I can't get into heaven?

  639. Because you never

  640. humbled yourself

  641. and repented

  642. of your sin

  643. and said,

  644. God,

  645. be merciful to me,

  646. a sinner.

  647. Save me.

  648. I can't save myself.

  649. Verse 23,

  650. then I will announce

  651. to them,

  652. I never knew you.

  653. depart from me,

  654. you lawbreakers.

  655. You lawbreakers.

  656. Well, that's rude.

  657. You're comparing me

  658. to those fish

  659. that I was throwing

  660. out of the net?

  661. You're saying

  662. I don't belong

  663. with the upstanding citizens?

  664. You're saying

  665. I don't belong

  666. with the good people?

  667. Are you telling me

  668. I'm a bad person,

  669. Jesus?

  670. Yes.

  671. You're a lawbreaker.

  672. And you were never

  673. cleansed.

  674. You're still

  675. a lawbreaker.

  676. Do you understand

  677. that without Christ,

  678. every single person,

  679. man,

  680. woman,

  681. child,

  682. is a lawbreaker.

  683. All of us

  684. in this room

  685. are lawbreakers.

  686. We've all broken

  687. God's law.

  688. The only way

  689. you can be

  690. not a lawbreaker

  691. anymore

  692. is if Jesus

  693. washes you,

  694. if Jesus

  695. cleanses you.

  696. You have to invite

  697. him to do that.

  698. He's not just

  699. going to do it.

  700. You have to say

  701. God,

  702. cleanse me,

  703. forgive me,

  704. wash me clean

  705. with your blood.

  706. Then he says

  707. now you're not

  708. a lawbreaker anymore.

  709. You were

  710. but I made you new.

  711. Now you're

  712. my child.

  713. A lot of people

  714. call themselves

  715. God's children

  716. and they're going

  717. to get to heaven

  718. and he's going to say

  719. I never knew you.

  720. You can't come in.

  721. You're out.

  722. It's a terrible

  723. picture.

  724. It's a terrible

  725. illustration

  726. but it's one

  727. that is most

  728. important,

  729. most essential

  730. and that's why

  731. Jesus repeats

  732. this theme

  733. throughout the

  734. parables.

  735. We've hit on

  736. similar topics

  737. to this

  738. in our study

  739. of the parables

  740. over the last

  741. 12 weeks.

  742. Heaven's entry

  743. is exclusive.

  744. George Barna

  745. runs a research

  746. firm,

  747. probably the

  748. foremost

  749. faith-based

  750. Christian

  751. research firm

  752. in America.

  753. It does a lot

  754. of valuable

  755. research on

  756. churches,

  757. on religious

  758. trends in

  759. America.

  760. Back in 2020

  761. released through

  762. the Arizona

  763. Christian University

  764. Cultural Research

  765. Center,

  766. he released

  767. this information

  768. that says

  769. that nearly

  770. half,

  771. I want to make

  772. sure I get this

  773. right,

  774. nearly half,

  775. you ready for

  776. this,

  777. of evangelical

  778. Christians.

  779. Christians.

  780. Let me break

  781. that down for

  782. you.

  783. I referenced

  784. it a minute

  785. ago.

  786. That's like

  787. the Baptists,

  788. the people that

  789. go to churches

  790. that talk about

  791. Jesus and preach

  792. the real gospel

  793. of Jesus,

  794. salvation by

  795. God's grace

  796. through our

  797. faith.

  798. We believe

  799. the correct

  800. salvation.

  801. People that go

  802. to those kinds

  803. of churches,

  804. they're called

  805. evangelical,

  806. nearly half,

  807. I believe it was

  808. around 46%

  809. of people

  810. who attend

  811. evangelical

  812. gospel preaching

  813. churches in

  814. America

  815. believe that

  816. good works

  817. are necessary

  818. to get into

  819. heaven.

  820. Now look,

  821. I'm not trying

  822. to make you feel

  823. singled out

  824. if you are one

  825. of the nearly

  826. half of

  827. evangelicals

  828. that believe

  829. that good works

  830. are necessary

  831. to get into

  832. heaven.

  833. but I'm

  834. sorry to have

  835. to tell you

  836. that you're

  837. wrong.

  838. Actually,

  839. I'm thankful

  840. to get to

  841. tell you

  842. that you're

  843. wrong.

  844. Because look,

  845. you're never

  846. going to be

  847. good enough.

  848. How much

  849. good can you

  850. do that

  851. will wipe

  852. away the

  853. bad you've

  854. already done?

  855. If I go

  856. out and

  857. murder somebody,

  858. I can do

  859. good works

  860. for the rest

  861. of my life,

  862. but it will

  863. not bring

  864. that innocent

  865. person back

  866. to life.

  867. I can't

  868. undo

  869. what I've

  870. done.

  871. Now folks,

  872. I might be

  873. crazy,

  874. but the data

  875. would suggest

  876. that there are

  877. people in this

  878. room still

  879. believing

  880. that good works

  881. in your life

  882. are going to

  883. get you to

  884. heaven.

  885. That they're

  886. going to get

  887. you right

  888. standing with

  889. God.

  890. Let's see

  891. what God

  892. actually has

  893. to say

  894. about that.

  895. Let's go

  896. to the

  897. Bible.

  898. Titus

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  899. chapter 3

  900. and verse

  901. 5.

  902. He saved

  903. us,

  904. not because

  905. of the

  906. righteous

  907. things we

  908. had done,

  909. but because

  910. of his

  911. what?

  912. Let's do

  913. it again.

  914. Not because

  915. of the

  916. righteous

  917. things we

  918. had done,

  919. but because

  920. of his

  921. that's it.

  922. He was

  923. merciful,

  924. not because

  925. we earned

  926. it.

  927. Romans 10

  928. and verse

  929. 9 makes

  930. it very

  931. clear on

  932. how to be

  933. saved.

  934. If you

  935. openly

  936. declare that

  937. Jesus is

  938. Lord and

  939. believe in

  940. your heart

  941. that God

  942. raised him

  943. from the

  944. dead,

  945. you will

  946. be saved.

  947. Say,

  948. Jesus,

  949. you're my

  950. Lord now.

  951. You're in

  952. charge.

  953. I'm not.

  954. I believe you

  955. rose from the

  956. dead.

  957. You didn't

  958. just die

  959. like all

  960. of us

  961. die.

  962. You proved

  963. you were

  964. God by

  965. rising from

  966. the dead.

  967. I put

  968. all my

  969. faith in

  970. you.

  971. That's what

  972. saves you,

  973. not anything

  974. you can do.

  975. So the

  976. question is,

  977. are you

  978. caught up in

  979. the net,

  980. or have

  981. you truly

  982. decided to

  983. follow Jesus?

  984. Are you

  985. really a

  986. Jesus

  987. follower?

  988. Or have

  989. you been

  990. hanging around

  991. the good

  992. fish?

  993. Maybe

  994. your whole

  995. life you've

  996. been hanging

  997. around the

  998. good fish.

  999. I don't want

  1000. God to throw

  1001. you out.

  1002. I don't want

  1003. God to throw

  1004. me out.

  1005. God,

  1006. that's why

  1007. I've got to

  1008. constantly verify

  1009. in my heart,

  1010. yes, I do

  1011. believe in

  1012. Jesus.

  1013. I have

  1014. confessed all

  1015. my sins,

  1016. past,

  1017. present,

  1018. and future

  1019. to him.

  1020. Say,

  1021. God, I

  1022. know I'm

  1023. a sinner.

  1024. I'm always

  1025. going to be

  1026. a sinner

  1027. while I'm

  1028. in this

  1029. flesh.

  1030. Please

  1031. forgive me.

  1032. Make me

  1033. your child.

  1034. I don't want

  1035. to be

  1036. lawbreaker

  1037. Sam anymore.

  1038. Are you

  1039. still

  1040. lawbreaker

  1041. Doyle and

  1042. Molly?

  1043. Felt like

  1044. the least

  1045. lawbreaker

  1046. people I

  1047. know.

  1048. Are you

  1049. still

  1050. lawbreaker,

  1051. Jared?

  1052. That makes

  1053. way more

  1054. sense.

  1055. I'm

  1056. messing

  1057. with you.

  1058. Are you

  1059. still the

  1060. lawbreaker

  1061. version of

  1062. you, or

  1063. have you

  1064. been redeemed

  1065. by Jesus?

  1066. Have you

  1067. been made

  1068. new by

  1069. Jesus, or

  1070. have you

  1071. just been

  1072. hanging out

  1073. with those

  1074. who have?

  1075. That's the

  1076. takeaway from

  1077. the sermon

  1078. today.

  1079. Am I

  1080. really a

  1081. disciple?

  1082. I told you

  1083. we'd go back

  1084. to Matthew

  1085. 13.

  1086. Look at

  1087. verse 52.

  1088. We're nearly

  1089. finished.

  1090. And y'all,

  1091. this time we're

  1092. not just

  1093. finishing a

  1094. sermon, we're

  1095. finishing a

  1096. 12-week

  1097. series.

  1098. It's a big

  1099. day.

  1100. I'm excited.

  1101. Matthew

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  1102. chapter 13

  1103. and down in

  1104. verse 52,

  1105. Jesus says,

  1106. he gets done

  1107. telling them

  1108. this whole

  1109. story.

  1110. There's going

  1111. to be weeping

  1112. and gnashing

  1113. of teeth for

  1114. the bad fish

  1115. that are thrown

  1116. back, that are

  1117. separated the

  1118. evil people from

  1119. the righteous.

  1120. Man, that's

  1121. hard, right?

  1122. Am I really

  1123. evil?

  1124. Yes, we are.

  1125. Without Christ

  1126. and his forgiveness,

  1127. we are evil.

  1128. So Jesus then

  1129. turns to them

  1130. and says,

  1131. have you understood

  1132. all these things?

  1133. And his

  1134. disciples said,

  1135. yes.

  1136. Therefore, he

  1137. said to them,

  1138. watch this,

  1139. every teacher of

  1140. the law who has

  1141. become a disciple

  1142. in the kingdom

  1143. of heaven.

  1144. Did you catch

  1145. that?

  1146. not every teacher

  1147. of the Bible

  1148. is a disciple.

  1149. Not every teacher

  1150. of the Bible

  1151. is a follower

  1152. of Jesus.

  1153. I can promise

  1154. you, you can

  1155. get up here,

  1156. not have a

  1157. strong relationship

  1158. with God,

  1159. be at a really

  1160. far off from God

  1161. point in your

  1162. life, and you

  1163. can get up here

  1164. and teach the

  1165. Bible.

  1166. There's not

  1167. going to be a

  1168. whole lot of

  1169. God's power

  1170. behind it.

  1171. God might use

  1172. something just

  1173. from the Bible

  1174. that's quoted

  1175. to stir something

  1176. in someone's

  1177. heart, but

  1178. something's going

  1179. to be missing.

  1180. He said,

  1181. you have to be

  1182. a disciple.

  1183. So even you,

  1184. my disciples,

  1185. who have been

  1186. walking with me,

  1187. I want you to

  1188. be teachers of

  1189. the law.

  1190. That was the

  1191. whole point.

  1192. Remember,

  1193. Jesus was a

  1194. rabbi.

  1195. He wasn't just

  1196. a rabbi.

  1197. He was a rabbi

  1198. with Shmiha.

  1199. Remember that

  1200. whole thing?

  1201. He had

  1202. authority to

  1203. teach, to

  1204. uncover new

  1205. truth.

  1206. Yeah, you

  1207. think so?

  1208. He is the

  1209. truth, the

  1210. way, the

  1211. truth, and

  1212. the life,

  1213. right?

  1214. And so

  1215. Jesus has

  1216. these guys

  1217. following him.

  1218. Man, I

  1219. can't believe

  1220. we get to

  1221. go with this

  1222. famous rabbi

  1223. everywhere he

  1224. goes and

  1225. learn from

  1226. him.

  1227. He's going

  1228. to make

  1229. us rabbis

  1230. too.

  1231. No, boys,

  1232. listen, I'm

  1233. going to make

  1234. you better

  1235. than rabbis.

  1236. I'm going

  1237. to make

  1238. you not

  1239. just teachers

  1240. of the law,

  1241. I'm going

  1242. to make

  1243. you disciples.

  1244. So he

  1245. says,

  1246. every teacher

  1247. of the law

  1248. of a house

  1249. who brings

  1250. out of his

  1251. old storeroom

  1252. treasures both

  1253. new and

  1254. old.

  1255. We're all

  1256. the way back

  1257. to Marie

  1258. Kondo again.

  1259. We're all

  1260. the way back

  1261. to the

  1262. storeroom,

  1263. the store

  1264. closet, the

  1265. garage, the

  1266. attic.

  1267. It's like you

  1268. go into

  1269. that and you

  1270. bring out

  1271. the good

  1272. stuff.

  1273. God's going

  1274. to use his

  1275. disciples

  1276. disciples to

  1277. bring out

  1278. the good

  1279. treasures.

  1280. Is God

  1281. doing that

  1282. in your

  1283. life?

  1284. Is he

  1285. using you

  1286. as a

  1287. disciple to

  1288. bring out

  1289. the good

  1290. treasures,

  1291. the good

  1292. fish?

  1293. Is he

  1294. using you

  1295. to reproduce

  1296. another

  1297. disciple?

  1298. Maybe in

  1299. your children,

  1300. maybe in

  1301. your neighbor,

  1302. maybe in

  1303. your co-worker,

  1304. maybe in

  1305. your friend,

  1306. maybe in

  1307. your parents,

  1308. a sibling?

  1309. Is he

  1310. using you

  1311. to be a

  1312. disciple

  1313. that he

  1314. can use

  1315. to make

  1316. another

  1317. disciple?

  1318. It's a

  1319. powerful truth

  1320. he's teaching

  1321. his followers.

  1322. So,

  1323. we have to

  1324. ask ourselves,

  1325. we got to

  1326. do a gut

  1327. check,

  1328. heart check,

  1329. gut check,

  1330. mind check,

  1331. soul check,

  1332. whatever.

  1333. We got to

  1334. check it all

  1335. and we got to

  1336. ask this

  1337. question.

  1338. Is my

  1339. faith a

  1340. dull

  1341. routine?

  1342. Is my

  1343. faith a

  1344. dull

  1345. routine

  1346. or a

  1347. dynamic

  1348. relationship?

  1349. Would you

  1350. bow your

  1351. heads with

  1352. me?

  1353. Is my

  1354. faith a

  1355. dull

  1356. routine

  1357. or a

  1358. dynamic

  1359. relationship?

  1360. I'm not

  1361. going to ask

  1362. you to

  1363. raise your

  1364. hand,

  1365. but would

  1366. you ask

  1367. yourself

  1368. right now

  1369. and be

  1370. completely

  1371. honest?

  1372. Look at

  1373. your faith

  1374. in God.

  1375. Is it

  1376. more

  1377. honestly

  1378. described

  1379. as a

  1380. dull

  1381. routine

  1382. or a

  1383. dynamic

  1384. relationship?

  1385. You know

  1386. what dynamic

  1387. means?

  1388. It changes.

  1389. It doesn't

  1390. stay the

  1391. same.

  1392. Sometimes it

  1393. might feel

  1394. closer.

  1395. Sometimes you

  1396. might feel

  1397. further away.

  1398. That's the

  1399. nature of a

  1400. dynamic

  1401. relationship.

  1402. But it

  1403. keeps

  1404. changing.

  1405. And over

  1406. time it

  1407. grows.

  1408. And you

  1409. don't stay

  1410. in the

  1411. same place

  1412. with God

  1413. as you've

  1414. been.

  1415. He keeps

  1416. sending you

  1417. back into

  1418. the storeroom

  1419. for new

  1420. treasures,

  1421. new nuggets.

  1422. He keeps

  1423. using you

  1424. to make

  1425. new disciples.

  1426. That's what

  1427. it's like

  1428. to follow

  1429. Jesus.

  1430. Go back

  1431. in the

  1432. Gospels.

  1433. We've

  1434. gone through

  1435. Matthew.

  1436. Go back

  1437. to Matthew.

  1438. Go to

  1439. Mark.

  1440. Go to

  1441. Luke.

  1442. Go to

  1443. John.

  1444. See what

  1445. Jesus did

  1446. with his

  1447. disciples.

  1448. And then

  1449. look at

  1450. your life.

  1451. Is he

  1452. doing that

  1453. with you?

  1454. Has he

  1455. been doing

  1456. that with

  1457. you over

  1458. the last

  1459. five years?

  1460. Ten years?

  1461. Twenty years?

  1462. Thirty years?

  1463. I'm going to

  1464. stop there

  1465. to not

  1466. offend you.

  1467. But look,

  1468. is our

  1469. relationship

  1470. with him

  1471. dynamic?

  1472. Or has it

  1473. become dull?

  1474. people?

  1475. So our

  1476. takeaway this

  1477. morning, if

  1478. you'll look

  1479. up at the

  1480. screen one

  1481. more time,

  1482. don't settle

  1483. for proximity

  1484. to God.

  1485. What do

  1486. I mean by

  1487. proximity?

  1488. Just being

  1489. close to

  1490. him.

  1491. Being

  1492. physically

  1493. close.

  1494. Don't just

  1495. settle for

  1496. proximity to

  1497. God.

  1498. Let him

  1499. change you.

  1500. Don't just

  1501. be around

  1502. God.

  1503. Don't just

  1504. be around

  1505. Christians.

  1506. Be a

  1507. Christian.

  1508. Don't just

  1509. be around

  1510. disciples.

  1511. Jump in.

  1512. Be one.

  1513. Say, man,

  1514. I'm not ready

  1515. for all that.

  1516. I'm not going

  1517. to do it

  1518. very well.

  1519. Right.

  1520. None of us

  1521. do it very

  1522. well.

  1523. He wants

  1524. us to,

  1525. though.

  1526. He's inviting

  1527. us to.

  1528. And if you

  1529. don't want to

  1530. get thrown

  1531. out of the

  1532. net, you

  1533. got to take

  1534. the plunge.

  1535. You got to

  1536. become a

  1537. disciple.

  1538. You got to

  1539. say, God,

  1540. change me.

  1541. Our series

  1542. can be summed

  1543. up in

  1544. Matthew 6

  1545. 33.

  1546. We didn't

  1547. actually cover

  1548. this in a

  1549. parable.

  1550. This is kind

  1551. of the whole

  1552. theme verse of

  1553. the series.

  1554. It says,

  1555. seek the

  1556. kingdom of

  1557. God above

  1558. all else.

  1559. Live

  1560. righteously,

  1561. and he will

  1562. give you

  1563. everything you

  1564. need.

  1565. what a

  1566. life verse.

  1567. What a

  1568. verse to

  1569. make the

  1570. theme of

  1571. your life.

  1572. I'm going

  1573. to seek

  1574. God's

  1575. kingdom above

  1576. the kingdom

  1577. of my

  1578. world.

  1579. I'm going

  1580. to seek

  1581. God's

  1582. kingdom above

  1583. any other

  1584. kingdom on

  1585. this earth.

  1586. Y'all,

  1587. everybody's got

  1588. their own

  1589. kingdom, and

  1590. usually they're

  1591. the king of

  1592. it.

  1593. And all

  1594. these other

  1595. kingdoms are

  1596. going to vie

  1597. for your

  1598. allegiance.

  1599. They're going

  1600. to come try

  1601. to steal your

  1602. allegiance away

  1603. and make you

  1604. pledge allegiance

  1605. to their

  1606. kingdom.

  1607. And you know

  1608. who's going to

  1609. do that more

  1610. than anybody?

  1611. You.

  1612. I try to get

  1613. myself to swear

  1614. allegiance to

  1615. my kingdom more

  1616. than anybody else

  1617. does.

  1618. I'm my own

  1619. biggest enemy.

  1620. But if I'm

  1621. swearing allegiance

  1622. to God's

  1623. kingdom, what

  1624. is the last

  1625. part of that

  1626. verse promise?

  1627. Do we believe

  1628. the promises

  1629. of God?

  1630. Do we believe

  1631. the promises

  1632. of God?

  1633. So he says

  1634. he will give

  1635. you everything

  1636. you need.

  1637. You seek

  1638. his kingdom,

  1639. he'll give

  1640. you everything

  1641. you need,

  1642. and nothing

  1643. you don't

  1644. need.

  1645. What a

  1646. promise.

  1647. What a

  1648. powerful promise

  1649. from God,

  1650. from Jesus.

  1651. Seek the

  1652. kingdom.

  1653. Are we a

  1654. kingdom-seeking

  1655. church, and

  1656. is it God's

  1657. kingdom?

  1658. Or have we

  1659. created our

  1660. own?

  1661. God, let

  1662. our castle

  1663. become so

  1664. big that

  1665. it's blotting

  1666. out God's

  1667. kingdom.

  1668. God, let

  1669. your kingdom

  1670. work be

  1671. done.

  1672. Let your

  1673. will be

  1674. done in

  1675. this earth,

  1676. in this

  1677. church, in

  1678. this town, in

  1679. my family, in

  1680. my heart, in

  1681. my life.

  1682. Let your

  1683. kingdom come.

  1684. Would you

  1685. pray with me

  1686. now?

  1687. God, that's

  1688. what we go to

  1689. you with.

  1690. God, you

  1691. want our

  1692. hearts more

  1693. than anything

  1694. else.

  1695. We can

  1696. swear allegiance

  1697. to you with

  1698. our lips.

  1699. We can hang

  1700. around you for

  1701. years.

  1702. We can show

  1703. up.

  1704. We can sit in

  1705. the pews.

  1706. We can sing

  1707. the songs.

  1708. We can clap

  1709. for the choir.

  1710. We can do

  1711. all the things

  1712. that look like

  1713. we're a follower

  1714. of Jesus, but

  1715. when the great

  1716. sorting comes,

  1717. I don't want

  1718. to get sorted

  1719. out.

  1720. to get sorted

  1721. out.

  1722. I don't want

  1723. to get thrown

  1724. out.

  1725. This net

  1726. catches all

  1727. kinds.

  1728. Sometimes we

  1729. think we've

  1730. got a pretty

  1731. good idea who

  1732. belongs and

  1733. who doesn't,

  1734. but the truth

  1735. is some of

  1736. us are

  1737. hypocrites.

  1738. Some of us

  1739. have even

  1740. become false

  1741. prophets.

  1742. We've been

  1743. preaching a

  1744. different Jesus

  1745. than the one

  1746. that you

  1747. actually were.

  1748. Forgive us,

  1749. God, where

  1750. we failed you.

  1751. touch our

  1752. hearts, break

  1753. our hearts

  1754. for what

  1755. breaks yours.

  1756. If there's

  1757. somebody here

  1758. today who

  1759. needs to

  1760. finally take

  1761. the plunge

  1762. and say,

  1763. I'm not going

  1764. to settle for

  1765. just being around

  1766. God.

  1767. I want God.

  1768. I want him to

  1769. change me.

  1770. I want him to

  1771. start on the

  1772. inside.

  1773. I want to

  1774. follow Jesus.

  1775. Let him make

  1776. that decision

  1777. today.

  1778. Church, with

  1779. your heads

  1780. bowed and

  1781. your eyes

  1782. closed, I'm

  1783. going to lead

  1784. with that

  1785. question.

  1786. Nearly half

  1787. of churches

  1788. like ours

  1789. across America

  1790. don't believe

  1791. the true way

  1792. of salvation

  1793. that Jesus

  1794. taught.

  1795. They think

  1796. they can earn

  1797. it.

  1798. Jesus said,

  1799. no, you

  1800. can't.

  1801. I paid for

  1802. your sin on

  1803. the cross.

  1804. You can't

  1805. pay for it

  1806. yourself.

  1807. How many of

  1808. you would say

  1809. by uplifted

  1810. hand, I've

  1811. had the wrong

  1812. picture of

  1813. salvation, or

  1814. maybe I've

  1815. just put it

  1816. off, whatever

  1817. it is, I

  1818. need to come

  1819. to Jesus

  1820. today?

  1821. Would you

  1822. be bold enough

  1823. to slip

  1824. your hand

  1825. up and say

  1826. that's me?

  1827. I need to

  1828. be bold enough

  1829. right now to

  1830. turn to Jesus.

  1831. Slip your hand

  1832. up and I'll

  1833. pray for you.

  1834. Thank you.

  1835. Thank you.

  1836. Let me ask

  1837. this follow-up

  1838. question.

  1839. How many of

  1840. you would say,

  1841. I have not

  1842. been seeking

  1843. God's kingdom

  1844. above all else?

  1845. And maybe

  1846. that's why I

  1847. don't have

  1848. everything I

  1849. need.

  1850. Because I've

  1851. been focused

  1852. on my

  1853. kingdom.

  1854. I've been

  1855. focused on

  1856. some other

  1857. kingdom, but

  1858. I have not

  1859. been seeking

  1860. God's kingdom

  1861. with my whole

  1862. heart.

  1863. Y'all, this

  1864. whole thing

  1865. has been about

  1866. the heart.

  1867. God wants

  1868. your heart

  1869. more than

  1870. anything else.

  1871. Would you

  1872. slip your hand

  1873. up and just

  1874. say pray for

  1875. me?

  1876. And I'll

  1877. pray for

  1878. you, I

  1879. promise you.

  1880. Thank you.

  1881. Thank you.

  1882. Thank you.

  1883. Thank you.

  1884. Thank you.

  1885. God, you see

  1886. the hands.

  1887. I don't know

  1888. what's going

  1889. on across the

  1890. room, but

  1891. God, you know

  1892. exactly what we

  1893. need in our

  1894. hearts, and I

  1895. pray that you

  1896. would cut through.

  1897. That you would

  1898. pierce our

  1899. hearts, that you

  1900. would not give

  1901. us rest.

  1902. Don't allow us to

  1903. go to sleep

  1904. peacefully at night

  1905. when we are not

  1906. settled on your

  1907. kingdom.

  1908. That doesn't mean

  1909. we're going to be

  1910. perfect.

  1911. That doesn't mean

  1912. we're not going to

  1913. trip up.

  1914. But God, we're

  1915. going to keep

  1916. coming back to

  1917. your kingdom and

  1918. say, your kingdom

  1919. over mine.

  1920. Your will be done,

  1921. not mine.

  1922. Teach us, God.

  1923. Grow us.

  1924. We'll give you the

  1925. glory for it.

  1926. We'll thank you for

  1927. it.

  1928. Church, Jared's

  1929. going to lead us

1930. in just a verse of

  1931. a song.

  1932. You can keep your

  1933. seats.

  1934. If you'd like to

  1935. meet me down front

  1936. and pray, we're

  1937. happy to do that

  1938. with you.

  1939. If you'd like to

  1940. come down and pray

  1941. by yourself at

  1942. this altar, come

  1943. do that.

  1944. But if you respond

  1945. to the Holy Spirit

  1946. however he's guiding

  1947. you right now.

  1948. Amen.

  1949. Amen.

  1950. Amen.
