  1. Well, let me just go ahead and ask you what the slide's asking you. Have you ever been triggered before?

  2. ! Does everybody even know what I mean by that?

  3. ! Some of you triggered. You're wondering if I'm asking you if you've ever been shot.

  4. It's not what that means.

  5. If you've spent any time on the curse that is social media, then you have probably come across somebody saying, you're triggering me?

  6. It means you are, something is causing in you a powerful negative emotional response.

  7. And so that's what we're talking about when we say, have you been triggered?

  8. Listen, that's not the topic of today's sermon, but it is a good lead-in to it.

  9. And so, what we're actually talking about is controlling our attitude.

  10. Attitude. Or, to keep it in the theme of our series, Summer Stretch, stretching our attitude.

  11. We've talked about stretching our time.

  12. Talked about stretching our talk.

  13. Last week, we talked about stretching our habits.

  14. We're trying to break it down into where we live, week in, week out, day in, day out.

  15. How do we stretch ourselves like God wants to stretch us?

  16. The easiest thing is to never stretch.

  17. We did this in week one of this series, and I think some of y'all really enjoyed it.

  18. So, go ahead. You have permission. Let's all stretch.

  19. Just get a nice, good one in there.

  20. That way you don't get it out when I'm about halfway through the sermon,

  21. and I think that you're falling asleep on me.

  22. Stretching can feel really nice, right?

  23. But like we said a few weeks ago, how about when you go to physical therapy?

  24. Does stretching feel nice at that point?

  25. If it does, they'll very quickly fix it and make it not feel nice, right?

  26. That's their job, is to stretch you beyond your comfort zone.

  27. Well, believe it or not, that's what God wants to do with us, too.

  28. He wants to stretch us beyond our comfort zone.

  29. Would you go to Numbers chapter 13?

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  30. Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  31. Today we're going to talk about stretching our attitude.

  32. I need to go there myself.

  33. Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  34. We're going to look at a few verses in chapter 13,

  35. and we're going to get into chapter 14 as well.

  36. We're reading quite a number of scriptures.

  37. I'm going to let you keep your seats today.

  38. But as we get into this idea of stretching our attitude,

  39. let's keep that in the back of our mind as we read through this passage from the Old Testament.

  40. The Lord spoke to Moses.

  41. Boy, that ought to get your attention.

  42. Anytime God is speaking, we ought to listen up, right?

  43. So the Lord spoke to Moses,

  44. send men out to scout out the land of Canaan.

  45. I'm giving to the Israelites.

  46. Send one man who's a leader among them from each of their ancestral tribes.

  47. So Moses did it.

  48. This is, without diving into a lot of the backstory and taking up too much time for you this morning,

  49. let's just focus on God promised this land to his people.

  50. And so they have arrived.

  51. They've gotten out of their captivity in Egypt,

  52. and they have gotten to the place where he says,

  53. all right, now it's time to go and scout out this land that I promised to you.

  54. And so he said, here's how you're going to do it.

  55. You're going to recruit some spies, some secret agents,

  56. and these guys are going to go on a top secret mission,

  57. and they are going to check out this land that I have promised to you.

  58. So they did it.

  59. Skip down now, would you, to verse 17.

  60. Tell you what.

  61. So let's look back in verse 6.

  62. One of the spies was Caleb, son of Jephunneh.

  63. I was waiting to see if anybody corrected my Hebrew, but there you go.

  64. From the tribe of Judah.

  65. Then jump down to verse 16.

  66. These were the names of the men Moses sent to scout out the land,

  67. and Moses renamed Hosea, son of Nun.

  68. That's why we didn't read verse 8, Hosea, son of Nun.

  69. Moses renamed him Joshua.

  70. Joshua, the son of Nun.

  71. Who was the only person who had no father and mother?

  72. Joshua, the son of Nun.

  73. Thank you.

  74. I'm a dad.

  75. I have to throw a dad joke in there somewhere, all right?

  76. Somebody just got that.

  77. That's good.

  78. All right, verse 17.

  79. When Moses sent them to scout out the land of Canaan,

  80. just like God had told him to do,

  81. he told them, go up this way to the Negev.

  82. Then go into the hill country.

  83. See what the land is like.

  84. Whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many.

  85. Is the land they live in good or bad?

  86. Are the cities they live in encampments or fortifications?

  87. What's the deal here, guys?

  88. Give me a good report.

  89. Verse 20.

  90. Is the land fertile or unproductive?

  91. Are there trees in it or not?

  92. Be courageous.

  93. Did y'all catch that?

  94. That was their instruction.

  95. Be courageous.

  96. Some of you who already know how this turned out know the significance of that.

  97. Bring back some fruit from the land.

  98. By the way, it was the season for the first ripe grapes.

  99. When we're talking about ripe grapes, this is what we're talking about.

  100. So let's jump down to verse 27.

  101. Tell you what, just by sake of the slide on the screen, let's look at verse 23.

  102. They scouted all this area, then they came to the valley of Eshkel.

  103. They cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes.

  104. Now look, my favorite place to buy grapes is Spring Market.

  105. Have y'all noticed?

  106. The grapes there are better than anywhere in Wichita Falls.

  107. They are awesome.

  108. I've gotten grapes at I think just about every grocery store in Wichita Falls,

  109. and the best ones are at Spring Market right here.

  110. So, now yeah, you know, Costco, or what is it, Sam's Club has the cotton candy grapes and stuff like that.

  111. But we're not talking about your bougie, just grapes.

  112. They're good.

  113. But I have never seen a cluster that looked like that.

  114. So what did they do?

  115. They had to carry it on a pole with two guys, one cluster of grapes, unique to this valley of Eshkel.

  116. So jump down now to verse 27.

  117. They got back.

  118. They got home.

  119. And I can imagine that these guys starting out on their journey had a little different attitude than they did when they got back.

  120. Why?

  121. Well, we're going to see in just a minute.

  122. But starting out, it's like, hey man, this is cool.

  123. We got selected for a top secret mission.

  124. This is awesome.

  125. We're going to go do the spy thing.

  126. We're going to hang out with our buddies, and we're going to go out, all 12 of us.

  127. You put 12 guys together on a road trip, you think some hijinks are not going to ensue?

  128. It's going to get crazy.

  129. So I'm sure they had themselves a time.

  130. Until they got to Negev and Hebron and this area where the descendants of Anak were.

  131. Do you know the significance of that?

  132. We're about to read it.

  133. Verse 27.

  134. They reported to Moses.

  135. We did it, Moses.

  136. We accomplished our mission.

  137. Mission accomplished.

  138. We went into the land where you sent us.

  139. Indeed, it is flowing with milk and honey.

  140. That's an expression that means it was very fertile.

  141. It was great for growing crops.

  142. It was good, attractive land that you would want to settle in.

  143. Here is some of the fruit.

  144. See, Moses?

  145. Have a great.

  146. However, verse 28.

  147. The people living in the land are strong and the cities are large and fortified.

  148. We also saw the descendants of Anak there.

  149. The Amalekites are living in the land of the Negev.

  150. The Hethites, Jebusites, Amorites live in the country.

  151. And the Canaanites live by the sea along the Jordan.

  152. Do you realize who all these people are?

  153. They're all Israel's enemies.

  154. They're all big, strong, scary warriors.

  155. The descendants of Anak were mighty, mighty people.

  156. So, these guys brought back the grapes.

  157. And they also brought back this terrifying report

  158. that this land is inhabited by our strongest enemies.

  159. God didn't know what he was doing by promising it to us.

  160. This is crazy.

  161. We can't go there.

  162. So, Caleb jumps in.

  163. Remember those two?

  164. Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb.

  165. Caleb quieted the people in the presence of Moses.

  166. Now, why would he have to do that?

  167. Why would he have to quiet all the Israelite people

  168. after the ten spies got done talking?

  169. Fear.

  170. Because they're scared, right?

  171. They're freaking out.

  172. What if I got up here today and said,

  173. listen, there's a group of people that want to kill us

  174. and they're all circled outside the church waiting for us to leave.

  175. Would you all just settle in and enjoy my sermon?

  176. Some of you would be jumping up.

  177. I'm packing, baby.

  178. Let's go.

  179. Now, there might be a little unrest, right?

  180. And so, that is what is happening

  181. as the people are intent on going into this land.

  182. They've marched there.

  183. They're ready to go.

  184. And all of a sudden, it's going to be war.

  185. So, they start talking.

  186. Caleb gets up and quiets them in the presence of Moses

  187. and says, let's go up now and take possession of the land

  188. because we can certainly conquer it.

  189. Why would Caleb think that they could take on all their enemies and win?

  190. Because God's on their side.

  191. We have this thing called faith, right?

  192. We believe in the one true almighty God, right?

  193. He promised us this land, right?

  194. Okay, let's go take it.

  195. Do we think he's not strong enough to beat these armies that hate us?

  196. Of course he is.

  197. But the men who had gone up with him outvoted him.

  198. They responded and said, we can't attack the people

  199. because they're stronger than we are.

  200. We by ourselves or we with God?

  201. I'm sure that's what Caleb was trying to make the point.

  202. So, they gave a negative report to the Israelites

  203. about the land they had scouted.

  204. Now, watch this.

  205. The land we pass through to explore

  206. is one that devours its inhabitants.

  207. All the people that we saw in it are men of great size.

  208. There are no women there, apparently.

  209. Just men of great size.

  210. We even saw the Nephilim there.

  211. The descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim.

  212. To ourselves, we seemed like grasshoppers,

  213. and we must have seemed the same to them.

  214. They went from,

  215. hey, there are our enemies living in this region,

  216. to all of a sudden,

  217. the fish story just got bigger and bigger and bigger,

  218. and now there's these like mythical creatures

  219. who are going to eat you

  220. is kind of how they passed it off to the people of Israel.

  221. It just kept getting worse and worse and worse

  222. as they talked.

  223. The Nephilim,

  224. if you want to know about the Nephilim,

  225. talk to Wade Pierce.

  226. He's sitting back there.

  227. He can tell you all about it.

  228. I am not going to take the time in this sermon,

  229. but go back to the beginning of the Bible.

  230. We don't even know 100% sure what it's talking about,

  231. what it says.

  232. The sons of God came from heaven

  233. and bore children with the daughters of men,

  234. and it produced this crazy race or species of people

  235. that was like giants and huge and massive.

  236. This is kind of what we're talking about here, okay?

  237. The little guy on the left down there,

  238. he's about six feet tall.

  239. Legend has it,

  240. they grew as big as like 36 feet tall.

  241. Who knows, y'all?

  242. Well, I don't know that we've found dinosaur bones

  243. or human dinosaur bones

  244. that would correlate to that,

  245. but listen,

  246. saying the word Nephilim

  247. was like a buzzword around the Israelites.

  248. Man, what?

  249. The Nephilim are there?

  250. And then there was this rumor

  251. that they were bloodsuckers

  252. and maybe even cannibalistic,

  253. and so if we go into the promised land,

  254. we're going to get eaten.

  255. That was kind of the terror

  256. that they were experiencing at this moment.

  257. And what happened?

  258. Verse 14,

  259. the whole community,

  260. I'm sorry,

  261. chapter 14, verse 1,

  262. the whole community broke into loud cries

  263. and they wept that night.

  264. Probably had bad dreams too.

  265. And then they started complaining,

  266. and then it just got worse from there.

  267. Now look,

  268. without following this story on,

  269. you should keep reading in numbers.

  270. Fascinating reading right here.

  271. But without following to its conclusion,

  272. let's stop

  273. and see

  274. what the power

  275. of your attitude

  276. can do.

  277. Your attitude

  278. can change everything.

  279. Yours,

  280. mine,

  281. it can change

  282. everything.

  283. So,

  284. let's see what

  285. Paul has to talk about it

  286. when he was teaching

  287. Timothy.

  288. We talked about this

  289. last week.

  290. Have nothing to do

  291. with godless myths

  292. and old wives' tales.

  293. I brought this verse back in.

  294. Because last week

  295. we talked about training,

  296. we talked about habits,

  297. we talked about all that stuff.

  298. But look,

  299. this right here

  300. has exactly to do

  301. with what those ten spies

  302. were doing.

  303. Two of them had faith,

  304. Caleb and Joshua.

  305. But the ten,

  306. their attitude

  307. was completely overtaken,

  308. completely changed,

  309. completely affected

  310. by fear

  311. and lack of faith

  312. in the one

  313. who had brought them

  314. all that way.

  315. So the warning is,

  316. don't get caught up

  317. in that trap.

  318. and then don't

  319. you be the one

  320. to spread

  321. those godless myths

  322. and old wives' tales.

  323. And often,

  324. our attitude

  325. will make us

  326. do that.

  327. If we are

  328. against something,

  329. then we'll all of a sudden

  330. make it sound

  331. a whole lot worse

  332. than it really is.

  333. Because

  334. we don't want to do it.

  335. Or we don't like it.

  336. So we're going to go

  337. on the attack about it.

  338. And we're going to

  339. trump it up in our mind.

  340. And it's going to

  341. become bigger

  342. than it ever

  343. really is.

  344. Instead,

  345. train ourselves

  346. to be godly.

  347. Start those habits.

  348. And we talked about

  349. that last week.

  350. So,

  351. how do we do it?

  352. How do we stretch

  353. our attitudes?

  354. How do we change

  355. our attitudes?

  356. First of all,

  357. we have to understand

  358. that our attitude

  359. shapes our perspective.

  360. Our attitude

  361. shapes

  362. our perspective.

  363. perspective.

  364. You ever been

  365. triggered by something?

  366. Those spies

  367. got triggered

  368. by giants.

  369. Listen,

  370. I think I would

  371. probably get

  372. triggered by giants too.

  373. If all of a sudden

  374. God wanted me

  375. to go out

  376. and fight a giant,

  377. I would be

  378. a little terrified.

  379. I'd be like,

  380. God,

  381. can you put me

  382. on the phone

  383. with David

  384. or something?

  385. Because I need

  386. a lesson

  387. in how to do this.

  388. But our attitude

  389. shapes our perspective.

  390. So,

  391. if I have

  392. an attitude

  393. of faith

  394. and reliance

  395. on God

  396. and he said,

  397. you get out there

  398. and fight that giant,

  399. then I would say,

  400. God,

  401. kind of like Peter

  402. when God told him

  403. to get out of the boat

  404. or Peter

  405. when God told him

  406. to put the boat

  407. back into the water

  408. and go catch fish

  409. when we've been fishing

  410. all night

  411. and caught nothing

  412. and say,

  413. God,

  414. I don't really know

  415. what you're doing.

  416. This doesn't seem

  417. like a good idea.

  418. It doesn't seem

  419. like it's going to work.

  420. But because you told me

  421. to do it,

  422. I'll do it.

  423. Sometimes that's

  424. enough faith

  425. to change our attitude

  426. enough from a no

  427. to a yes.

  428. Listen,

  429. I'm not saying

  430. that there weren't

  431. dangerous enemy tribes

  432. waiting for the Israelites

  433. in the promised land.

  434. There were.

  435. But God was going

  436. to give them

  437. victory over them.

  438. And all they had

  439. to get to

  440. was from a no

  441. to a yes.

  442. And that is what

  443. God is waiting

  444. for me

  445. and for you

  446. to do.

  447. We don't have

  448. to be sunshine

  449. and roses

  450. all the time.

  451. We don't have

  452. to be all bubbly

  453. about everything

  454. that we feel

  455. like God

  456. is leading us

  457. to do.

  458. But we have

  459. to get from

  460. a no

  461. to a yes.

  462. And that's

  463. going to come

  464. from our

  465. perspective.

  466. So,

  467. the ten spies'

  468. perspective

  469. is fear,

  470. panic,

  471. discouragement.

  472. Joshua and Caleb's

  473. perspective

  474. was faith,

  475. courage,

  476. and truth.

  477. They knew.

  478. They knew

  479. that God

  480. would deliver them.

  481. And the attitude

  482. shaped

  483. their perspective

  484. on it.

  485. Yes,

  486. there are enemies,

  487. but we have

  488. God on our side.

  489. So,

  490. let's go

  491. take them.

  492. Let's go

  493. see God

  494. win a mighty

  495. victory.

  496. Not,

  497. let's run

  498. in fear.

  499. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  500. talks about this.

  501. Everyone born

  502. of God

  503. overcomes

  504. the world.

  505. I underline

  506. that word.

  507. It's in this verse

  508. three times,

  509. these two verses.

  510. This is the victory

  511. that has overcome

  512. the world,

  513. even our faith.

  514. It's not our strength,

  515. it's not our might,

  516. it's not our smarts,

  517. it's not how good

  518. looking we are,

  519. thankfully.

  520. It's not how big

  521. our bank account is,

  522. thankfully.

  523. It's not contingent

  524. on all those

  525. human things,

  526. it's contingent

  527. on our faith

  528. in almighty God.

  529. Because if we have

  530. faith in God,

  531. then that unlocks

  532. God's power

  533. to step in

  534. and move.

  535. So this is the victory

  536. that's overcome

  537. the world.

  538. It's our faith.

  539. Faith is the victory.

  540. There's an old song

  541. that said that.

  542. Who is it

  543. that overcomes

  544. the world?

  545. Only the one

  546. who believes.

  547. If you really believe,

  548. then faith

  549. will change

  550. your attitude.

  551. Faith will change

  552. your perspective.

  553. And you can go

  554. from one

  555. who cowers

  556. in fear

  557. or a negative Nancy,

  558. so to speak,

  559. into an overcomer.

  560. This is what Caleb

  561. was trying to get

  562. the Israelites

  563. to do.

  564. He was trying

  565. to break through

  566. into those spies'

  567. mind and say,

  568. listen guys,

  569. yeah,

  570. they look scary,

  571. but we can be

  572. overcomers.

  573. So are you

  574. an overcomer today?

  575. Does that characterize

  576. your life?

  577. Have you been able

  578. to overcome

  579. everything that the

  580. devil throws at you?

  581. You cannot

  582. in your strength,

  583. but by faith

  584. you can.

  585. By faith

  586. you can overcome.

  587. So attitude

  588. shapes your perspective.

  589. Can I get a volunteer

  590. up here?

  591. I need a volunteer.

  592. Christopher,

  593. I saw your hand first.

  594. Come on,

  595. let's go.

  596. Let's go,

  597. brother.

  598. Come on,

  599. son,

  600. run,

  601. let's go.

  602. Come on,

  603. let's go.

  604. I don't get to coach

  605. anymore,

  606. I just wanted to do

  607. something like that.

  608. All right,

  609. sir,

  610. can you look out there

  611. and see the crowd

  612. pretty well?

  613. Yes.

  614. You see everybody's faces?

  615. Yes.

  616. They look nice,

  617. don't they?

  618. Some of them.

  619. Some of them?

  620. Wow.

  621. I did not even

  622. coach him to do that.

  623. He just,

  624. we need to stop

  625. and pray for your

  626. heart right now.

  627. All right,

  628. cool.

  629. Would you just

  630. put these on?

  631. Do you wear glasses?

  632. Yes.

  633. You do wear glasses?

  634. I have contacts.

  635. You have contacts.

  636. That ought to make

  637. this real fun.

  638. All right,

  639. here you go,

  640. man.

  641. Would you mind

  642. looking through those

  643. and just see,

  644. do they look as clear

  645. as they did before?

  646. No.

  647. No?

  648. Can you describe

  649. how they look right now?

  650. No.

  651. No?

  652. There are no words,

  653. right?

  654. Can you see Clayton

  655. waving at you down there

  656. vaguely?

  657. Yeah.

  658. Is it a little blurry?

  659. Yes.

  660. Okay.

  661. Okay.

  662. That's great,

  663. man.

  664. So would you say

  665. that those lenses

  666. are affecting your vision

  667. and how you see

  668. our beautiful church?

  669. Yes.

  670. Okay.

  671. Good to know.

  672. Great to know.

  673. You can take those off.

  674. Would you say that

  675. distorted or changed

  676. your perspective

  677. a little bit?

  678. Yes, sir.

  679. Okay.

  680. Would you try those on?

  681. Yeah.

  682. Yeah.

  683. Look at that.

  684. Pretty cool, right?

  685. By the way,

  686. these were Dollar Tree's

  687. finest lenses right here,

  688. so.

  689. What does that do?

  690. How's everybody look?

  691. Darker.

  692. Darker.

  693. Darker.

  694. Interesting.

  695. You can see them

  696. more clearly probably,

  697. right?

  698. Yes.

  699. But everything's

  700. a little darker?

  701. Yes.

  702. That's cool.

  703. All right, man.

  704. Would you take those off?

  705. You see everybody good again?

  706. It didn't permanently damage your...

  707. No.

  708. All right, good.

  709. All right.

  710. Thanks, man.

  711. That was awesome.

  712. High five.

  713. Let's give them a clap.

  714. You did great, buddy.

  715. By the way,

  716. do you want these?

  717. Here, Chris.

  718. You can have these.

  719. Catch.

  720. Yeah!

  721. Nice catch.

  722. That was awesome.

  723. Brandy was like,

  724. you are going to kill me.

  725. Does anybody wear

  726. 3.25 reading lenses?

  727. Anybody?

  728. No?

  729. Just like,

  730. thumbs down.

  731. Nobody wants them!

  732. All right.

  733. Somebody come get them.

  734. They're right up here.

  735. I do not wear them.

  736. All right.

  737. The first time

  738. he looked through

  739. the enhanced readers,

  740. y'all looked blurry.

  741. I know that

  742. because I tried them out

  743. myself earlier.

  744. He's still wearing them.

  745. That's great.

  746. You're awesome, Chris.

  747. The second time,

  748. he could see clearly,

  749. but everybody

  750. looked darker.

  751. Everything looked darker.

  752. Now look,

  753. that's a silly little example.

  754. But the truth is,

  755. depending on the lens

  756. you are looking through,

  757. everything can look

  758. a little darker

  759. than it really is.

  760. Believe me,

  761. I've been there.

  762. Or,

  763. everything can look

  764. distorted.

  765. And you are not getting

  766. an accurate view

  767. of what you're looking at.

  768. It's all because

  769. of your lenses.

  770. Y'all didn't change.

  771. We didn't change.

  772. The truth,

  773. reality,

  774. did not change.

  775. Do you know

  776. who always has

  777. 20-20 vision?

  778. God.

  779. He's the only one

  780. who sees reality

  781. as it really is.

  782. The rest of us

  783. are looking

  784. through different lenses.

  785. Looking through

  786. different lenses

  787. at different moments.

  788. Those are driven

  789. by our emotions.

  790. Those are usually

  791. driven by circumstances.

  792. Those are driven

  793. by what's going on

  794. around us,

  795. the people around us,

  796. our experiences,

  797. the triggers

  798. that set us off.

  799. And that immediately

  800. changes our lenses.

  801. And now,

  802. the reality

  803. that we're seeing,

  804. the people

  805. that we're listening to,

  806. what we're watching

  807. happen in the service,

  808. what we're seeing

  809. happen in the community,

  810. what's happening

  811. with our loved ones,

  812. our friends,

  813. what's happening

  814. at home,

  815. what's happening

  816. the truth about ourselves,

  817. those all of a sudden

  818. become distorted.

  819. We're not seeing it

  820. accurately.

  821. Or,

  822. it might become

  823. darker.

  824. Everything just doesn't

  825. look as bright anymore.

  826. Everything doesn't

  827. look as cheerful.

  828. Everything doesn't

  829. look as good.

  830. The lenses

  831. are our attitudes.

  832. And that changes

  833. our perspective.

  834. Philippians 4.8

  835. tells us

  836. how to combat that.

  837. Think on

  838. these things.

  839. Whatever's true,

  840. whatever's righteous,

  841. whatever's worthy

  842. of praise,

  843. there's a whole list.

  844. Philippians 4.8.

  845. This is what you think on.

  846. This is what shapes

  847. your attitude.

  848. So,

  849. what you look through,

  850. the lens you look through,

  851. shapes how you see life.

  852. And a small shift

  853. in that perspective

  854. can have big impact

  855. in your life.

  856. number two.

  857. Number two.

  858. Before we get there,

  859. I forgot to put this up there.

  860. Do you see obstacles

  861. or a chance

  862. to overcome?

  863. Do you see obstacles

  864. or a chance

  865. to overcome?

  866. You can put that

  867. in your bulletin.

  868. Caleb was trying

  869. to get the people

  870. to be overcomers,

  871. but the lens

  872. those spies

  873. were looking at

  874. changed their

  875. opportunity

  876. to overcome

  877. into obstacles

  878. that they just

  879. could not see past.

  880. You ever been there?

  881. Had an obstacle

  882. in your life

  883. you just can't see

  884. how to get around?

  885. God says

  886. you can be an overcomer.

  887. You might have

  888. to take the long way.

  889. Might be tough

  890. going through it.

  891. But God says

  892. nothing is too hard

  893. for Him.

  894. You've got Him

  895. if you're His child.

  896. Now look,

  897. if you're not

  898. His child this morning,

  899. then I can't help you.

  900. You've got to take

  901. that first step.

  902. You have to take

  903. that first step.

  904. Become a child of God.

  905. Recognize that

  906. Jesus Christ

  907. came and died

  908. for your sins.

  909. Not for anything

  910. He did wrong,

  911. but for your sins,

  912. for mine.

  913. Sacrificed His life

  914. on the cross

  915. and then rose

  916. back from the dead.

  917. We heard a wonderful

  918. gospel presentation

  919. from Ford Bachman

  920. on his video

  921. this morning

  922. before he got baptized.

  923. He put his faith

  924. in that.

  925. So many in this room

  926. have put their faith

  927. in the saving power

  928. of Jesus

  929. to forgive your sin,

  930. to make you His child,

  931. to give you a home

  932. in heaven forever.

  933. That's step number one.

  934. And then,

  935. God can help you

  936. change your perspective.

  937. God can help you

  938. look through His lens,

  939. not yours.

  940. Point number two,

  941. wow,

  942. I am really getting

  943. ahead of myself

  944. and I apologize for that.

  945. Before we get there,

  946. oh,

  947. that was not supposed

  948. to be in there.

  949. That's like an old version

  950. of my slide.

  951. Sorry guys,

  952. I gave you the wrong thing.

  953. Let's move along.

  954. That was last week.

  955. If you missed it last week,

  956. it's on YouTube.

  957. Here we go.

  958. How do we stretch

  959. our attitudes?

  960. Our attitudes shape

  961. the people around us.

  962. Isn't that interesting?

  963. Our attitudes do not

  964. just shape our perspective,

  965. they also shape our people.

  966. They affect the people

  967. that you care about.

  968. I can promise you,

  969. when I've got a rotten attitude,

  970. everyone in my home knows it.

  971. And Bo is like the biggest

  972. empath in the world,

  973. you know,

  974. he feels deeply

  975. and so he will come to me

  976. and be like,

  977. Dad,

  978. are you stressed?

  979. I'm like,

  980. man,

  981. you're too young

  982. to be asking me that.

  983. Yes,

  984. I am.

  985. Sorry.

  986. But you know what?

  987. It helps me start

  988. changing my attitude

  989. because it's like,

  990. yeah,

  991. you know,

  992. it's affecting the kids

  993. and they don't need

  994. to carry that burden

  995. right now.

  996. Truth is,

  997. I don't even need

  998. to carry that burden

  999. right now.

1000. I need to give it

  1001. back to Jesus.

  1002. He's the one

  1003. who can carry it.

  1004. So our attitude

  1005. shapes our people.

  1006. Ephesians 4,

  1007. 29,

  1008. do not let any

  1009. unwholesome talk

1010. come out of your mouths

1011. but only what is helpful

  1012. for building others up.

  1013. We talked about that

  1014. a couple weeks ago.

  1015. We talked about shaping

  1016. our talk,

  1017. building others up,

  1018. not tearing them down,

  1019. according to their needs

  1020. that it may benefit

  1021. those who listen.

  1022. I promise you,

  1023. someone is always listening.

  1024. Someone is always watching.

  1025. Someone is always affected.

  1026. And I'm not even

  1027. talking about the sense

  1028. in that someone's

  1029. checking up on you.

1030. I'm talking about the sense

  1031. that whatever you do,

  1032. say,

  1033. think,

  1034. it affects others.

  1035. And usually,

1036. the ones that affect the most

1037. are the ones you care

  1038. about the most.

1039. The ones I care about the most.

  1040. So let's benefit

  1041. those under the sound

  1042. of our voice.

  1043. Those in our circle

  1044. of influence.

  1045. The ten spies

  1046. fear,

  1047. spread,

  1048. panic.

1049. You know what else it did?

  1050. Their negative attitude

  1051. caused Israel

  1052. to wander

  1053. in the desert

  1054. for 40 years.

  1055. But Joshua

  1056. and Caleb,

  1057. their response

  1058. was faith.

  1059. The people of Israel

1060. still had to pay the price.

  1061. But Joshua

  1062. and Caleb

  1063. and all their families

  1064. got to go

  1065. into the promised land

  1066. someday.

  1067. Because they had faith.

  1068. Their attitude

  1069. of faith

  1070. affected

  1071. those around them

  1072. positively.

  1073. Those spies'

  1074. attitude of fear

  1075. affected all the people

  1076. negatively.

  1077. Ephesians 4.29

  1078. told us

  1079. to speak

  1080. words that

  1081. build up,

  1082. not tear down.

1083. Can I tell you something?

  1084. Attitudes

  1085. are contagious.

  1086. You saw what happened

1087. with the children of Israel.

  1088. Those guys

  1089. started telling

  1090. their tall tales

1091. of just how bad it was

1092. and they're going to get eaten

  1093. and all that stuff.

  1094. And what happened?

  1095. The people

  1096. lost it.

  1097. They freaked out.

  1098. That attitude

  1099. was contagious

  1100. and it spread

  1101. like wildfire

  1102. through the people.

  1103. So if attitudes

  1104. are contagious,

  1105. make yours worth catching.

  1106. Caleb and Joshua's

  1107. attitude was worth

  1108. catching that day.

  1109. Not too many

  1110. caught it.

  1111. So,

  1112. look at the person

  1113. next to you,

  1114. would you?

  1115. Say,

  1116. watch your attitude

  1117. around me.

  1118. Come on,

  1119. y'all can do it.

  1120. Say,

  1121. watch your attitude

  1122. around me.

  1123. I don't want

  1124. to catch

  1125. your bad attitude.

  1126. The kids

  1127. are having

  1128. way too much fun

  1129. saying this

  1130. to their parents,

  1131. man.

  1132. Bible says

  1133. respect your parents,

  1134. alright?

  1135. Honor them.

  1136. But listen,

  1137. sometimes parents,

  1138. we got to watch

  1139. our attitudes

  1140. around our kids.

  1141. Sometimes kids,

  1142. you got to watch

  1143. your attitude

  1144. around your parents

  1145. or around your siblings

  1146. or around your friends.

  1147. sometimes parents,

  1148. we got to watch

  1149. our attitudes

  1150. around each other.

  1151. We got to watch

  1152. our attitudes

  1153. in moments of conflict,

  1154. moments of disagreement.

  1155. Watch your attitude

  1156. around me.

  1157. Why?

  1158. Because it's contagious.

  1159. Because it can affect

  1160. so much.

  1161. It not only

  1162. affects your perspective,

  1163. it affects the people

  1164. around you.

  1165. And then number three,

  1166. your attitude

  1167. shapes your path.

  1168. It shapes

  1169. where you're going.

  1170. It shapes

  1171. what you're heading,

  1172. where you're heading.

  1173. Anybody like

  1174. Patti LaBelle?

  1175. Nobody likes

  1176. Patti LaBelle

  1177. in that room.

  1178. Okay, alright,

  1179. thank you.

  1180. Penny,

  1181. count on somebody.

  1182. I'm feeling good

  1183. from my head

  1184. to my shoes,

  1185. know where I'm going

1186. and I know what to do.

  1187. I tidied up

  1188. my point of view.

  1189. I got a

  1190. new attitude.

  1191. There you go,

  1192. alright.

  1193. Nobody listens

  1194. to that stuff.

  1195. That's alright.

  1196. Listen,

  1197. I went through

  1198. that song,

  1199. I was like,

  1200. is there anything

  1201. wicked or unbiblical

  1202. in this song?

  1203. We're like,

  1204. no,

  1205. alright,

  1206. we're safe.

  1207. Look,

  1208. did you catch

  1209. that line though?

  1210. That's a silly

  1211. kind of example,

  1212. but did you catch

  1213. that line,

  1214. I know where I'm going

1215. and I know what to do.

  1216. Why?

  1217. Because I got

  1218. a new attitude.

  1219. You know when you

  1220. usually don't know

  1221. where you're going

  1222. or what to do

  1223. is when you got

  1224. a rotten attitude

  1225. about life.

  1226. And that's when

  1227. you're kind of

  1228. sitting around like,

  1229. I don't know

  1230. what to do.

  1231. Like,

  1232. no,

  1233. but God does.

  1234. If you start

  1235. looking through

1236. the lens of the Holy Spirit,

  1237. all of a sudden

  1238. He tells you

  1239. what to do.

  1240. The next thing is,

  1241. go make up

  1242. with your wife.

  1243. Go make up

  1244. with your kids.

  1245. Go make up

  1246. with your brother

  1247. or sister in Christ.

  1248. Go open the Bible

  1249. and read it.

  1250. Go for a walk.

  1251. The dog probably

  1252. wants to.

  1253. God will help you

  1254. figure out

  1255. what to do next.

  1256. It'll shape

  1257. your path.

  1258. And usually

  1259. what God's going

  1260. to do

  1261. is give you

  1262. the next thing,

  1263. not the next

  1264. hundred things

  1265. that's going to

  1266. take you ten years

  1267. to accomplish.

  1268. He's got all that

  1269. figured out,

  1270. but your attitude

  1271. day in

  1272. and day out,

  1273. moment by moment

  1274. will shape

  1275. the path

  1276. that you're on.

  1277. So,

  1278. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1279. and verse 6,

  1280. the mind governed

  1281. by the flesh

  1282. is death,

  1283. but the mind

  1284. governed

  1285. by the Spirit

  1286. is life

  1287. and peace.

  1288. I love that

  1289. it uses

  1290. the word governed.

  1291. We've got some

  1292. people in the room

  1293. who are in

  1294. county government.

  1295. We've got some

  1296. people in the room

  1297. who are in

  1298. school government.

  1299. We've got some

  1300. people who understand

  1301. firsthand what

  1302. governing is.

  1303. It's a legal

  1304. term.

  1305. Whose laws

  1306. are you living

  1307. by?

  1308. Whose laws

  1309. are governing

  1310. your mind?

  1311. Is it your

  1312. own?

  1313. Is it mine?

  1314. Is it society's?

  1315. Is it culture?

  1316. What's governing

  1317. you?

  1318. Your weaknesses?

  1319. Your flesh?

  1320. Your rotten

  1321. attitude?

  1322. The mind

  1323. governed

  1324. by the Spirit

  1325. equals

  1326. life

  1327. and peace.

  1328. We're all

  1329. chasing peace,

  1330. aren't we?

  1331. We all just

  1332. want that

  1333. inner peace.

  1334. Gurus

  1335. and shamans

  1336. and everybody

  1337. out there,

  1338. self-help

  1339. people,

  1340. they're all

  1341. trying to

  1342. figure out

  1343. how to get

  1344. inner peace.

  1345. Jesus

  1346. is the

  1347. only way

  1348. to find

  1349. peace.

  1350. God

  1351. gave us

  1352. his Spirit

  1353. to walk

  1354. with us

  1355. every moment,

  1356. never leaves

  1357. us.

  1358. So let

  1359. him govern

  1360. your mind.

  1361. And that's

  1362. kind of how I

  1363. want to close

  1364. this morning.

  1365. Whose laws

  1366. are you living

  1367. by?

  1368. Or we could

  1369. ask it this

  1370. way.

  1371. What lens

  1372. are you looking

  1373. through?

  1374. Christopher,

  1375. thanks for being

  1376. a good sport

  1377. up here.

  1378. He's still

  1379. looking through

  1380. those lenses.

  1381. It was a

  1382. little bright

  1383. in the room,

  1384. wasn't it?

  1385. Now it's all

  1386. darker,

  1387. yeah.

  1388. The lenses

  1389. make a

  1390. difference.

  1391. That cityscape

  1392. is so blurry

  1393. until you put

  1394. on the

  1395. correct lenses.

  1396. Change

  1397. your lens,

  1398. change

  1399. your life.

  1400. That's our

  1401. takeaway this

  1402. morning.

  1403. Change your

  1404. lens,

  1405. change your

  1406. life.

  1407. It's my

  1408. challenge to

  1409. all of you,

  1410. to all of

  1411. us.

  1412. Whatever

  1413. is going

  1414. on,

  1415. it doesn't

  1416. really

  1417. matter.

  1418. What

  1419. triggers me

  1420. is different

  1421. than what

  1422. might trigger

  1423. you.

  1424. When the

  1425. longhorns

  1426. lose,

  1427. I get

  1428. triggered,

  1429. all right?

  1430. But there's

  1431. serious stuff,

  1432. isn't there?

  1433. If everything's

  1434. not okay with

  1435. me and my

  1436. wife,

  1437. I get

  1438. triggered.

  1439. She knows

  1440. that.

  1441. It's like,

  1442. I gotta have

  1443. everything okay.

  1444. I don't need

  1445. to be looking

  1446. through my

  1447. lens at that

  1448. moment.

  1449. I need to be

  1450. looking through

  1451. the lens of

  1452. the Holy Spirit.

  1453. So moment

  1454. by moment,

  1455. whatever the

  1456. conflict is,

  1457. whatever triggers

  1458. you,

  1459. whatever's going

  1460. on in your

  1461. little world,

  1462. give it to

  1463. Jesus and

  1464. say,

  1465. God,

  1466. change my

  1467. lens.

  1468. Change my

  1469. lens right

  1470. now.

  1471. I might be

  1472. looking through

  1473. a blurry

  1474. lens and it's

  1475. distorted.

  1476. I'm not seeing

  1477. an accurate

  1478. picture of

  1479. this situation.

  1480. I might be

  1481. looking through

  1482. a polarized

  1483. lens and

  1484. everything's a

  1485. little darker

  1486. and it changes

  1487. the color and

  1488. things just

  1489. don't look

  1490. as good as

  1491. I know you

  1492. really are.

  1493. So God,

  1494. change my

  1495. lens.

  1496. Would you

  1497. make that your

  1498. prayer this

  1499. morning?

  1500. Would you

  1501. bow your

  1502. heads with

  1503. me right

  1504. now?

  1505. I've been

  1506. trying to give

  1507. you a little

  1508. prayer to say

  1509. and listen,

  1510. this is not

  1511. anything magical,

  1512. it's just

  1513. helping you

  1514. out if you

  1515. need that.

  1516. So I'll

  1517. give you this

  1518. right now and

  1519. if you'd like

  1520. to pray it in

  1521. your heart,

  1522. if you'd like

  1523. to pray it

  1524. out loud,

  1525. you can do

  1526. this.

  1527. God,

  1528. help me see

  1529. through the

  1530. lens of

  1531. trusting you.

  1532. I'll say it

  1533. one more time

  1534. if you need

  1535. to hear it

  1536. again.

  1537. God,

  1538. help me see

  1539. through the

  1540. lens of

  1541. trusting you.

  1542. Change my

  1543. attitude and

  1544. change my

  1545. life.

  1546. Change my

  1547. attitude and

  1548. change my

  1549. life.

  1550. In Jesus'

  1551. name,

  1552. amen.

  1553. God,

  1554. that is what

  1555. we pray for

  1556. in this room.

  1557. God,

  1558. there are

  1559. people who

  1560. don't know

  1561. you personally

  1562. as Savior

  1563. in this room.

  1564. I believe

  1565. that in a

  1566. group this

  1567. size,

  1568. it'd be

  1569. foolish to

  1570. think otherwise.

  1571. I'm sure

  1572. the majority

  1573. of the people

  1574. in the room

  1575. would raise

  1576. their hand

  1577. and say,

  1578. yes,

  1579. I'm a

  1580. Christ follower.

  1581. I do my

  1582. best to

  1583. follow Jesus.

  1584. Truth is,

  1585. we don't

  1586. always do

  1587. our best.

  1588. But God,

  1589. we just

  1590. don't want

  1591. to say no.

  1592. We want

  1593. to get to

  1594. that amount

  1595. of faith

  1596. where we say

  1597. yes to

  1598. whatever you're

  1599. telling us

  1600. to do.

  1601. There might

  1602. be somebody

  1603. in the room

  1604. who needs

  1605. to put on

  1606. the lens

  1607. of your

  1608. Holy Spirit

  1609. and say,

  1610. I see

  1611. how God

  1612. wants me

  1613. to see

  1614. this.

  1615. I'm going

  1616. to stop

  1617. looking at

  1618. it through

  1619. the lens

  1620. of my

  1621. selfishness,

  1622. my pride,

  1623. my self-centeredness,

  1624. my lack

  1625. of experience,

  1626. my lack

  1627. of wisdom.

  1628. God,

  1629. you're the

  1630. fountain of

  1631. all that,

  1632. so let me

  1633. see through

  1634. your lens

  1635. and trust

  1636. you

  1637. in this

  1638. situation.

  1639. How many

  1640. of you would

  1641. raise your

  1642. hand and say

  1643. there's something

  1644. going on in

  1645. my life

  1646. that I need

  1647. to trust

  1648. God in

  1649. and ask

  1650. him to help

  1651. my perspective

  1652. on it,

  1653. change my

  1654. attitude on it.

  1655. Would you

  1656. slip your hand

  1657. up right now?

  1658. Thank you.

  1659. Thank you.

  1660. Thank you.

  1661. Thank you.

  1662. Some of you are

  1663. in prayer and I don't

  1664. want to disturb you

  1665. from that.

  1666. Would you just

  1667. keep your seats

  1668. for a moment?

  1669. Linda's praying.

  1670. If you need somebody

  1671. to come pray with,

  1672. Jared and I are

  1673. up here,

  1674. you can come

  1675. grab us.

  1676. If you need

  1677. to turn around

  1678. and kneel

  1679. in your seat,

  1680. do that.

  1681. If you need

  1682. to come kneel

  1683. at these steps,

  1684. do that.

  1685. Whatever you

  1686. need to do

  1687. to do business

  1688. with God

  1689. for just a

  1690. moment.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.
