  1. All right, church. You ready for this? We practiced this last Sunday. Here we go. I say,

  2. ! And then you respond. Ready? God gives. We can do better. God gives. How do we give back?

  3. There you go. All right. I hope that can take root in our hearts as we dive back into this series

  4. called Jesus on Generosity. Listen, if we want to talk about something, we should probably see what

  5. Jesus had to say about it first. So that's what we did in our series on his parables about stories

  6. of the kingdom over the summer, and we are jumping right back into what Jesus had to teach us when we

  7. consider this idea of generosity. Now, do y'all know what I have been watching a lot of the last

  8. couple weekends? You're a really smart crowd. Yes, I have been. You know why? Because fall means football,

  9. y'all. It's what it means. Whether it's the Bearcats here locally, or maybe you're from another school

  10. district and you're cheering on your team. Maybe it's your college. I've been watching the Longhorns.

  11. Yesterday was a whole lot better than the other Saturday. If you don't know what we're talking

  12. about, don't worry about it. We're still going to win the national championship this year, all right?

  13. And then NFL happened, and you know, I expected the Cowboys to get blown out Thursday night. They

  14. actually stayed in it, had a chance to win. That was better than I expected, so standards are lower

  15. these days, all right? But football's fun, and football is almost like a religion in Texas, but

  16. look, it's not just Texas. It's all around the country. Everybody has their thing. For many,

  17. it's football or some other sports, but the truth is people commit their time and their attention,

  18. often their resources, to something that they just crave and love and they think will make them happy.

  19. And I'll tell you, in my football cheering career, I've probably been sad more than I've been happy,

  20. all right? That's just part of it, you know? And you could probably resonate with that.

  21. Truth is, football's not it. People get excited about all kinds of things. They kind of get a little

  22. obsessive about all kinds of things. Did y'all know that people camp out overnight to buy stuff

  23. when it's released? It's crazy. The new iPhone, when the iPhone 15, when the iPhone 15 launched,

  24. stores sold out of it in hours. Video games, you know, a new PlayStation comes out. In 2020,

  25. the PlayStation 5 sold out in 12 minutes. Yeah. The latest great Nike or Jordan shoes,

  26. sneakers that drop, they'll crash the websites. They'll sell out in seconds, literally seconds,

  27. and then you can resell some of those sneakers for thousands of dollars. Some of you are thinking,

  28. man, I got to get in the sneaker game. It sounds like you can flip those for a profit.

  29. Avengers, maybe you're into movies, Avengers Endgame, when that came out,

  30. people buying the tickets crashed the website in six hours, broke movie records.

  31. The truth is, we all have our thing. Now, maybe here locally, some of you may not get into some of

  32. that stuff as much. Maybe you've got your thing, but I bet you get a little bit excited the night

  33. before hunting season officially starts, whatever it might be for you.

  34. Maybe sitting out chairs the night before the Pioneer Union parade.

  35. That's always fun to go see. That's right around the corner, isn't it?

  36. The truth is, we all chase what matters to us. We will inconvenience ourselves.

  37. We will pour money, time, and effort into what we think will make us happy.

  38. Jesus has to teach us something in Matthew 6. Would you take your Bibles and turn there?

  39. Matthew 6. We're going to read from verse 19 down through 24.

  40. But as you're turning, I want to share with you Matthew 6, 21.

  41. Jesus said, wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

  42. I thought this quote was interesting.

  43. She says, I don't know what I want, but I want it now.

  44. Anybody ever resonate with that?

  45. Maybe husband and wife are trying to decide what to eat, and wife just knows she wants something,

  46. and the first six things the husband suggests, nope, I didn't want that.

  47. I haven't figured out yet what I want, but I want it now.

  48. Part of the marriage code is cracking what she wants, cracking that code.

  49. Matthew 6, 21, Jesus said, what you want, the desires of your heart,

  50. that is where your treasure will be.

  51. And vice versa.

  52. Where your treasure is, that reveals what you want, the desires of your heart.

  53. So we're going to put ourselves to the test this morning.

  54. We're going to put ourselves to the treasure test.

  55. What is your treasure?

  56. What are you treasuring?

  57. Let's look at Matthew 6, verse 19.

    Matthew 6:19

  58. Jesus teaches us, don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

  59. where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

  60. Well, that sounds smart, doesn't it?

  61. Don't store your stuff up in a sketchy place.

  62. How many of you would take your valuables and store them in an open cardboard box in front of your house?

  63. That seems unwise, doesn't it?

  64. And Jesus is kind of telling us, hey, listen,

  65. investing your earthly treasure into the things of the earth will give you a similar return.

  66. It is foolish, it's unsafe,

  67. and it's not going to bring the treasure, the happiness that you think it will.

  68. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

  69. where neither moth nor rust destroys,

  70. and where thieves don't break in and steal.

  71. Sounds pretty obvious.

  72. Okay, yeah, give me the one where they aren't going to steal it.

  73. Give me the place where it's not going to fall apart and turn bad.

  74. Verse 21, we read it a moment ago,

  75. for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  76. The eye is the lamp of the body.

  77. If your eye is healthy,

  78. your whole body will be full of light.

  79. He didn't just change topics.

  80. It might seem like he all of a sudden jumped into a different conversation.

  81. It's all linked together.

  82. So stick with it here.

  83. But if your eye is bad,

  84. your whole body will be full of darkness.

  85. So if the light within you is darkness,

  86. how deep is that darkness?

  87. We'll get back to that in just a minute.

  88. No one can serve two masters,

  89. since either he will hate one

  90. and love the other,

  91. or he will be devoted to one and despise the other.

  92. You cannot serve both God and money.

  93. Let's pray together.

  94. God, enlighten us from your word.

  95. Let your spirit take your words

  96. and the words of my mouth

  97. and apply them,

  98. personalize them for each one of us here.

  99. Show us what we need to take away from this morning.

  100. In Jesus' name we'll pray.

  101. Amen.

  102. Test number one.

  103. Test number one from Matthew chapter 6 and verse 19

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  104. is how safe is your treasure?

  105. How safe is your treasure?

  106. So that's what we're going to be talking about today.

  107. How safe is your treasure?

  108. Earthly wealth is temporary.

  109. Heavenly treasure is eternal.

  110. Look back at what he said.

  111. What did he say?

  112. Look at verses 19 and 20.

  113. Y'all talk back to me.

  114. What did he say could happen

  115. to your earthly treasure?

  116. Could get stolen.

  117. What else?

  118. Rust and moths could destroy it, right?

  119. So, this is a real danger.

  120. How many of you have had something stolen before?

  121. How many of you had something rusted or start to decay?

  122. How many of you had pests or moths or some other kind of pest

  123. get in and destroy something you held valuable?

  124. Yeah.

  125. So we can resonate with this, right?

  126. We can understand what Jesus is talking about.

  127. So, when he says these things could happen

  128. to the things you value on this earth,

  129. we understand it.

  130. Well, they did too.

  131. They lived in an era where they had less safeguards available to them

  132. than we have today in 2025.

  133. And so I'm sure it was even more common or more frequent

  134. for things to happen to what they held dear.

  135. That's why we're going back a little ways,

  136. but that's why it's said for...

  137. Many people would go and bury their valuables in the ground,

  138. especially when they were going out of town.

  139. Their house was really left unprotected,

  140. and so they would go and find a hole

  141. where they only knew the location of

  142. and bury their valuables in the ground.

  143. So, they understand what Jesus is saying,

  144. that there is nothing sure on this earth.

  145. You think you have a certain amount of money.

  146. You think you have a certain amount of possessions,

  147. but in reality, it's all unsafe.

  148. It's all insecure.

  149. And people will invest so much of their money

  150. into security, security systems, insurance, etc.

  151. But in reality, none of it is all that safe.

  152. So Jesus is saying, listen,

  153. recognize that nothing you have

  154. is completely safe on this earth.

  155. And at some point, it will all go away.

  156. So it might go away in your lifetime,

  157. or it might go away after you're dead.

  158. But at some point, it's all going to go away.

  159. John chapter 9 and verse 39.

    John 9 chapter mention

  160. John chapter 9 and verse 39.

    John 9 chapter mention

  161. Sorry, I didn't tell you to turn there,

  162. but if you can, flip over a few books

  163. to John chapter 39.

  164. Chapter 9, verse 39.

  165. Jesus told him,

  166. I entered this world

  167. to render judgment.

  168. Sorry, y'all, I skipped ahead.

  169. We're going to get there.

  170. Hold a finger in John chapter 9

    John 9 chapter mention

  171. and go to Luke 12.

  172. So hold a finger in John 9.

  173. We're going to get there.

  174. But look at Luke 12.

  175. Luke chapter 12 and verse 33.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  176. We're trying to hit

  177. all these different teachings

  178. that Jesus had to say on this topic.

  179. So in Luke 12, he says, verse 33,

  180. sell your possessions

  181. and give to those in need.

  182. Can we stop there for a second?

  183. What if I came to your house

  184. and said, sell everything you own

  185. and give it to the people

  186. who need things?

  187. That'd be tough, right?

  188. Excuse me?

  189. You can't tell me what to do

  190. with my possessions.

  191. That's right, but that's kind of

  192. what Jesus did here.

  193. He said, sell your possessions

  194. and give to those in need.

  195. This will store up treasure

  196. for you in heaven.

  197. And the purses of heaven

  198. will never get old

  199. or develop holes.

  200. Your treasure will be safe.

  201. No thief can steal it.

  202. No moth can destroy it.

  203. It's kind of referencing back

  204. to what he taught

  205. back in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  206. Wherever your treasure is,

  207. the desires of your heart

  208. will also be.

  209. I love how the different

  210. gospel records

  211. give slightly different tweaks

  212. or slightly different perspectives

  213. on the same moments

  214. of Jesus' teaching.

  215. So I like to compare

  216. what Luke had to say

  217. with what Matthew had to say.

  218. Of course, Luke was not

  219. one of those disciples early on.

  220. He spoke into it afterwards

  221. based on accounts

  222. that he was told.

  223. And so this is fascinating

  224. to see this different angle on it.

  225. Sell your possessions,

  226. give to those in need.

  227. The purses of heaven

  228. never get old

  229. or develop holes.

  230. God never runs out of resources.

  231. We will.

  232. We can.

  233. So examine your daily investments,

  234. your time,

  235. your energy,

  236. your money.

  237. It's a good place to start.

  238. Where are you storing

  239. your treasure

  240. right now?

  241. There's a principle here.

  242. You can't lose

  243. what you give

  244. to God.

  245. You can't lose

  246. what you give

  247. to God.

  248. Like that's what Jesus

  249. is trying to teach us.

  250. So parents,

  251. some of us have a hard time

  252. not being

  253. helicopter parents

  254. and constantly just

  255. holding on to our kids

  256. and we don't want

  257. to let them go.

  258. Give them to God.

  259. You can't lose

  260. what you give

  261. to God.

  262. There might be

  263. a burden

  264. on your heart

  265. that you just

  266. can't set free.

  267. You have to keep

  268. trying to fix it

  269. and you're beating

  270. your head against the wall

  271. out of frustration

  272. just trying to

  273. figure out

  274. how to solve

  275. this problem

  276. this burden

  277. you're carrying

  278. and I can promise you

  279. if you give it

  280. to God

  281. you won't lose

  282. that battle.

  283. God will help

  284. you win.

  285. You can't lose

  286. what you give

  287. to God.

  288. So if a tornado

  289. hit

  290. if a thief

  291. broke in

  292. the stock market

  293. crashed

  294. everything we have

  295. materially speaking

  296. on this earth

  297. could be gone.

  298. but treasures

  299. invested

  300. in God

  301. and his kingdom

  302. prayer

  303. generosity

  304. acts

  305. of Christ

  306. like love

  307. those are safe

  308. forever

  309. and the results

  310. of that

  311. are safe

  312. forever

  313. so you can't lose

  314. what you give

  315. to God.

  316. Test number two

  317. test number two

  318. is what you see

  319. is what you get.

  320. How do we know

  321. what our treasure

  322. is?

  323. How do we know

  324. if we're being

  325. generous?

  326. Listen to this

  327. principle

  328. what you see

  329. is what you get.

  330. John chapter nine

  331. again

  332. told you to turn

  333. there I told you

  334. we'd get there

  335. John chapter nine

  336. verse 39

  337. Jesus told him

  338. I entered this

  339. world to render

  340. judgment

  341. to give sight

  342. to the blind

  343. and to show

  344. those who think

  345. they see

  346. that they

  347. are blind.

  348. some Pharisees

  349. who were standing

  350. by near him

  351. told him

  352. and said

  353. asked him

  354. say are you

  355. saying we're

  356. blind?

  357. If you were

  358. blind Jesus

  359. replied you

  360. wouldn't be

  361. guilty but you

  362. remain guilty

  363. because you

  364. claim you

  365. can see.

  366. Did you hear

  367. what they just

  368. said?

  369. Jesus has said

  370. I didn't come

  371. to give sight

  372. to those who

  373. think they can

  374. see I gave

  375. sight to those

  376. who are blind

  377. I'm here to

  378. show those

  379. who think

  380. they can

  381. see that

  382. they're

  383. actually

  384. blind.

  385. In the

  386. Pharisees it

  387. was no secret

  388. that he was

  389. talking about

  390. them.

  391. So they said

  392. you're saying

  393. we're blind?

  394. How dare you?

  395. You're saying

  396. we're spiritually

  397. blind?

  398. We don't have

  399. spiritual understanding

  400. when we read the

  401. scriptures?

  402. Are you kidding

  403. me?

  404. This is our

  405. life's work.

  406. From early on

  407. training up through

  408. rabbi school

  409. we've been

  410. dedicating our

  411. lives to this

  412. we know what

  413. we're talking

  414. about.

  415. It's kind of

  416. the unwritten

  417. words that

  418. they're trying

  419. to communicate

  420. to Jesus.

  421. He said if

  422. you were blind

  423. you wouldn't

  424. be guilty

  425. but you remain

  426. guilty because

  427. you claim you

  428. can see.

  429. Back in

  430. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  431. 6 our text

  432. I told you we'd

  433. get back to it

  434. verse 22

  435. the eye is the

  436. lamp of the

  437. body.

  438. If your eye is

  439. healthy you'll

  440. be able to see.

  441. Your whole body

  442. will be full of

  443. light.

  444. But if your eye

  445. is bad you'll

  446. be blind.

  447. Your whole body

  448. will be full

  449. of darkness.

  450. So if the

  451. light that you

  452. think is inside

  453. you is actually

  454. darkness how deep

  455. is that darkness?

  456. It's the same

  457. principle that he's

  458. teaching the

  459. Pharisees here.

  460. It's not just that

  461. you're spiritually

  462. blind and you know

  463. you're blind.

  464. You think you can

  465. see.

  466. You have light.

  467. light.

  468. And I pray that

  469. none of us in

  470. this room are in

  471. that boat where

  472. we think we've got

  473. it all figured

  474. out.

  475. We think we've

  476. got Jesus figured

  477. out.

  478. We've got him in

  479. our nice little

  480. box.

  481. We think that we

  482. have spiritual

  483. sight and Jesus

  484. is way over there.

  485. And he's telling

  486. us you are blind.

  487. You don't have the

  488. sight you think you

  489. have.

  490. Once you realize

  491. you're blind then

  492. he can help you.

  493. Then he can save

  494. you.

  495. Then he can give

  496. you sight.

  497. So spiritual

  498. blindness happens

  499. when you think

  500. you're seeing

  501. clearly but you're

  502. actually walking

  503. in darkness.

  504. Like those

  505. Pharisees you and

  506. I are able fully

  507. able to wander in

  508. religion.

  509. Wander in church

  510. attendance.

  511. Wander in acting

  512. like a nice

  513. person.

  514. But inside our

  515. hearts are far

  516. away from Jesus.

  517. There's a principle

  518. here that I want to

  519. share with you.

  520. It's called bounded

  521. set versus centered

  522. set.

  523. Now stick with me

  524. here.

  525. It's getting a little

  526. analytical, a little

  527. out there but stick

  528. with me.

  529. This bounded

  530. set means I

  531. will base

  532. my religion

  533. on who is

  534. inside my

  535. lines.

  536. I will create

  537. lines and I

  538. will say this is

  539. what it takes to

  540. be a part of my

  541. religion.

  542. You've got to think

  543. like I do.

  544. You've got to look

  545. like I do.

  546. You've got to act

  547. like I do.

  548. and I'm going to

  549. determine what the

  550. lines are.

  551. Then there's a

  552. different type of

  553. religion.

  554. It's the centered

  555. set thinking.

  556. And it doesn't

  557. judge people based

  558. on whether they're

  559. inside or outside

  560. the lines.

  561. It judges people

  562. whether they're

  563. moving toward

  564. Jesus or away

  565. from Jesus.

  566. So there's two

  567. different kinds of

  568. thinking.

  569. The Pharisees were

  570. absolutely bounded

  571. set.

  572. they set the

  573. lines.

  574. Some of it they

  575. took from Old

  576. Testament teaching

  577. and then they

  578. took that and

  579. they ran with it.

  580. And they set

  581. their own lines.

  582. They created

  583. their own

  584. boundaries.

  585. And they said

  586. you're either in

  587. or you're out

  588. depending on how

  589. well you live

  590. inside our

  591. boundaries.

  592. Jesus came to

  593. them and said

  594. no.

  595. You've got it

  596. all wrong.

  597. that's never

  598. what it's been

  599. about.

  600. It's always

  601. been about God.

  602. It's always been

  603. about your

  604. relationship with

  605. him.

  606. It's always been

  607. about whether

  608. your heart is

  609. toward him or

  610. away from him.

  611. So you can

  612. live inside the

  613. boundaries on the

  614. bounded set

  615. religion.

  616. You can be

  617. inside the fence.

  618. You can make

  619. your life look

  620. like those around

  621. you.

  622. But your heart

  623. is never moving

  624. toward Jesus.

  625. and Jesus

  626. says that's

  627. not my

  628. religion.

  629. That's not

  630. what I came

  631. to this earth

  632. to bring.

  633. And so many

  634. people and so

  635. many churches

  636. will name

  637. Jesus' name

  638. but they're

  639. living in

  640. bounded set

  641. religion not

  642. centered set

  643. religion.

  644. And they're

  645. actually doing

  646. more harm to

  647. the true

  648. religion of

  649. Jesus than

  650. good.

  651. So I don't

  652. judge you and

  653. you shouldn't

  654. judge me based

  655. on if we're

  656. inside or

  657. outside whatever

  658. these lines are

  659. because everybody's

  660. lines are in

  661. different places.

  662. We should judge

  663. one another

  664. whether our

  665. hearts are moving

  666. toward Jesus or

  667. away from Jesus.

  668. How do you know

  669. that?

  670. The fruit of our

  671. life will show

  672. it.

  673. Who was Jesus?

  674. That's who we

  675. should be like.

  676. We should have

  677. his true heart

  678. for people.

  679. We should have

  680. his real

  681. compassion.

  682. We should have

  683. his grace,

  684. his mercy,

  685. his kindness.

  686. That should be

  687. what our lives

  688. should be showing

  689. out.

  690. Not this bounded

  691. set but centered

  692. on Christ.

  693. So

  694. Jesus said

  695. it's like you're

  696. spiritually blind.

  697. It's like you're

  698. spiritually asleep.

  699. Imagine sleepwalking

  700. through your house

  701. at night.

  702. In your dream

  703. you're walking

  704. through a field,

  705. you're running

  706. down a football

  707. field,

  708. whatever it is,

  709. I don't know,

  710. wherever you are

  711. and you feel like

  712. you're navigating

  713. safely.

  714. The truth is

  715. you're bumping

  716. into walls,

  717. tripping over

  718. furniture.

  719. Hopefully you're

  720. not walking

  721. outside your

  722. house and into

  723. the street,

  724. right?

  725. Anybody have a

  726. sleepwalking problem?

  727. You don't have

  728. to raise your

  729. hand,

  730. that's alright.

  731. But that's what

  732. life looks like

  733. when you think

  734. you're spiritually

  735. awake and in

  736. reality you've been

  737. asleep for a long

  738. time.

  739. And you keep

  740. bumping into

  741. things and you

  742. keep tripping

  743. over things and

  744. God puts things

  745. in your path to

  746. wake you up but

  747. you don't want to

  748. wake up because

  749. you're just fine

  750. where you are,

  751. you think you

  752. can see.

  753. So my question

  754. is are you really

  755. following Jesus or

  756. are you spiritually

  757. sleepwalking?

  758. Maybe the Holy

  759. Spirit today through

  760. His Word can

  761. wake you up.

  762. Now it's not fun to

  763. wake up when you're

  764. sleepwalking and it

  765. can be a little

  766. dangerous but God's

  767. got you, alright?

  768. And we've got you

  769. and we're here to

  770. help you.

  771. If you're spiritually

  772. sleepwalking, wake

  773. up now and we'll

  774. help you as a

  775. church together be

  776. more centered on

  777. Jesus.

  778. See the blindness

  779. and let God

  780. restore sight.

  781. Are you following

  782. Jesus or spiritually

  783. sleepwalking?

  784. Test number three

  785. and we're almost

  786. done.

  787. One master, one

  788. treasure.

  789. One master, one

  790. treasure.

  791. Back in Matthew

  792. chapter six, our

  793. text, no one can

  794. serve two masters.

  795. He's either going to

  796. hate one and love

  797. the other or he'll

  798. be devoted to one

  799. and despise the

  800. other.

  801. You cannot serve

  802. both God and

  803. money.

  804. There's a truth

  805. here.

  806. Who you serve

  807. tells you what

  808. you'll chase.

  809. Who you serve

  810. tells you what

  811. you'll chase.

  812. Why?

  813. Because they

  814. dictate everything

  815. in your life.

  816. your master tells

  817. you what to be

  818. interested in.

  819. Your master tells

  820. you what's valuable,

  821. what's important.

  822. Your master sets the

  823. rules that you then

  824. have to follow.

  825. You say, well, I've

  826. got no master.

  827. I'm my own master.

  828. You're deceiving

  829. yourself.

  830. You are mastered by

  831. something.

  832. Even if it's your

  833. own pride, you're

  834. mastered by

  835. something.

  836. If it's your desire

  837. for money, if it's

  838. your desire for

  839. popularity, if it's

  840. your desire for

  841. importance or power

  842. or control, if it's

  843. your desire for

  844. safety, comfort,

  845. stability, whatever

  846. it is, you are

  847. mastered by something

  848. and that determines

  849. what you'll go after.

  850. what you'll pursue,

  851. what you'll chase.

  852. And so you've

  853. probably spent your

  854. life chasing

  855. whatever your

  856. master told you

  857. to chase.

  858. Jesus wants to

  859. be your master.

  860. And he's going to

  861. tell you to chase

  862. something.

  863. He's going to tell

  864. you to chase him.

  865. He's going to tell

  866. you to spend time in

  867. the gospels, reading

  868. about who he was,

  869. what he did, how

  870. he did it, why he

  871. did it, and chase

  872. after becoming like

  873. him.

  874. The difference in

  875. Christ being our

  876. master and anything

  877. else being our

  878. master is he will

  879. always lead us to

  880. greener pastures.

  881. He will always lead

  882. us to still waters.

  883. The path through

  884. that might be the

  885. valley of the shadow

  886. of death.

  887. It might be hard

  888. and rocky mountains,

  889. but we will always

  890. arrive at a place

  891. where we look back

  892. and say, God worked

  893. all that together

  894. for good.

  895. He told me to

  896. chase after this.

  897. I wasn't even sure

  898. if I really wanted

  899. it.

  900. I wasn't sure if it

  901. would bring me what

  902. I thought it would

  903. bring me.

  904. But I followed my

  905. shepherd, my good

  906. shepherd.

  907. I followed my

  908. master.

  909. I chased after it.

  910. And look what he's

  911. done in my life.

  912. Anybody testify to

  913. that?

  914. Look what God has

  915. done in my life.

  916. Amen.

  917. So, what is God

  918. telling us to chase?

  919. What is he telling

  920. us to pursue and

  921. focus our lives on?

  922. Deuteronomy 10

  923. gives it to us

  924. plainly.

  925. What does the

  926. Lord your God

  927. ask of you but

  928. to fear him, to

  929. live in obedience

  930. to him, to love

  931. him, to serve him

  932. with all our hearts,

  933. with all our souls,

  934. and to obey his

  935. commands and decrees

  936. that he's giving us

  937. today for our own

  938. good?

  939. It's for our own

  940. good.

  941. He works all things

  942. together for our

  943. good.

  944. Yes, man, y'all are

  945. right there.

  946. I love it.

  947. So,

  948. our master determines

  949. our treasure.

  950. Who or what we

  951. serve dictates what

  952. we'll chase, what

  953. we'll value, where

  954. our hearts go.

  955. Does money matter?

  956. Does money matter?

  957. It does.

  958. Money matters.

  959. Should money

  960. master?

  961. No.

  962. Money cannot

  963. master.

  964. It's a cruel

  965. master.

  966. It can be a

  967. useful tool, but

  968. it is a cruel,

  969. unfair master.

  970. promises everything,

  971. but it steals what's

  972. truly important.

  973. That's why people say

  974. follow the money.

  975. You ever heard of

  976. that?

  977. Follow the money, man.

  978. Why?

  979. Because so many people

  980. are mastered by

  981. money.

  982. And so they'll

  983. compromise their

  984. ethics.

  985. They'll do things that

  986. they would never have

  987. otherwise done because

  988. their master told them

  989. what to pursue.

  990. Their master told them

  991. what to chase.

  992. You've got to get

  993. this promotion.

  994. You've got to keep

  995. this out of the

  996. press.

  997. You've got to keep

  998. this private.

  999. You can't let this

  1000. get out.

1001. You've got to go get

  1002. this.

  1003. And so they'll

  1004. pursue it at all

  1005. costs because they're

  1006. mastered by it.

  1007. things.

1008. But when Jesus is your

  1009. master, you follow his

  1010. way, not your wallet.

  1011. When Jesus is your

  1012. master, your treasure

  1013. aligns with his

  1014. kingdom priorities.

1015. You want to know what

  1016. his kingdom priorities

  1017. are?

1018. Go back and listen to

1019. the series on stories of

  1020. the kingdom.

  1021. He was very clear.

1022. You don't even have to

  1023. listen to the series.

  1024. Just open up the

  1025. gospels and read the

  1026. parables where Jesus

1027. told us all about the

  1028. kingdom of God.

  1029. What is important in

  1030. the kingdom of God?

  1031. It's opposite of what's

  1032. important in our little

  1033. kingdom.

  1034. So, Joshua 24 15 issues

  1035. us a challenge.

  1036. Choose today whom you

  1037. will serve.

  1038. Choose today whom you

  1039. will serve.

  1040. The wonderful truth is

1041. you can choose a new

  1042. master.

  1043. Why?

  1044. Because Jesus died on

  1045. the cross.

  1046. That's why you can

  1047. choose a new master.

1048. Before that, you were a

  1049. slave to sin.

  1050. Humanity was in

  1051. slavery.

1052. We had no way out.

  1053. But then Jesus broke

  1054. the chains of sin.

1055. When he died on the

  1056. cross laying himself

  1057. down as the punishment

1058. for our sin and he

  1059. didn't stay dead

  1060. otherwise he just would

1061. have been a man like

  1062. you and me.

1063. But he rose from the

  1064. dead proving he's

  1065. different, he's

  1066. supernatural, he's

  1067. powerful, he's divine,

  1068. he's everything he said

  1069. he was.

  1070. He really is God.

  1071. So he broke those

  1072. chains and he said

1073. you can stay a master

  1074. to everything else

1075. or you can choose me

  1076. as your master.

  1077. I'm offering a different

  1078. way.

  1079. I'm offering a different

  1080. path.

  1081. I'm offering a different

  1082. life.

  1083. wealth.

  1084. So what have we

  1085. learned?

  1086. Heavenly wealth is

  1087. eternal.

  1088. Earthly wealth is not.

  1089. It's very temporary.

1090. Open your eyes to what

  1091. God is doing.

  1092. You might think you're

  1093. spiritually seeing

  1094. everything.

  1095. You've got it all

  1096. figured out.

1097. God wants to show you

  1098. you've been sleepwalking.

  1099. Maybe you're still

  1100. spiritually blind.

  1101. You're still a slave to

1102. sin and Jesus wants to

1103. open your eyes for the

  1104. first time.

  1105. Or maybe you're a child

1106. of God but you've been

  1107. sleepwalking through this

  1108. life completely blind to

  1109. what God's doing around

1110. you and he wants to open

1111. up your eyes and say you

1112. come over here and walk

  1113. with me now.

  1114. You'll be tripping over

  1115. less stuff.

  1116. And then number three

  1117. money matters but it

  1118. cannot master.

  1119. It cannot master.

1120. So what do we do this

  1121. week?

1122. Maybe you need to give

1123. your life to Jesus for

  1124. the first time.

  1125. Say I don't want to be a

  1126. slave to sin anymore.

1127. I want to choose my own

1128. master and I want it to

  1129. be Jesus.

  1130. Because I trust him.

  1131. He's different than

  1132. everybody else.

  1133. He's different than I am.

  1134. He's different than all

  1135. of you.

  1136. He's the only one that I

1137. can really get behind and

1138. say yeah that's what my

1139. life needs to look like

  1140. is who Jesus was.

  1141. And still is today.

1142. So what do we do?

  1143. Give something away.

  1144. Stop holding on so

1145. tightly to the things of

1146. this earth where rust and

1147. moth and thieves can get to

  1148. it.

  1149. hold it loosely.

  1150. Eyes up.

  1151. Hands open.

  1152. Hold it loosely.

  1153. Give something away.

1154. And then pause to pray.

  1155. Pause to pray.

  1156. Stop.

  1157. Eyes up.

1158. That first part was hands

  1159. open.

1160. This part is eyes up.

  1161. Looking unto Jesus.

1162. He's the one who started all

  1163. this.

1164. And then you ask God where to

  1165. look right now.

1166. Say God I don't want to be

  1167. sleepwalking through my day.

  1168. I don't want to be

  1169. spiritually blind or asleep.

1170. Wake me up and open my eyes

1171. to see what you see.

  1172. Maybe you're sending someone

1173. across my path that I can be

  1174. generous to.

  1175. Maybe you're showing me

1176. something about myself that I

  1177. need to see.

1178. So pause wherever you are in

  1179. your day to pray.

1180. Before you go to bed at night

1181. when you wake up in the

  1182. morning.

  1183. Throughout your day when

1184. life is just piling on.

1185. It's always okay to stop.

  1186. It's always okay to take a

  1187. breath.

1188. It's always okay to pause.

1189. Look at Jesus and pray.

1190. And then finally serve in one

  1191. small way.

1192. Maybe you're already serving in

  1193. the church.

  1194. Maybe there's a way to serve

  1195. somebody in the community.

1196. Maybe you're not serving in the

  1197. church.

1198. Or maybe God wants you to take

  1199. another small step.

1200. I'm not saying you've got to go

1201. from zero to hero overnight.

1202. But I'm saying you do have to

  1203. take a small step.

  1204. Why?

1205. Because Jesus is always going to

  1206. be leading you forward.

1207. He's going to be moving you

  1208. along toward those greener

  1209. pastures.

1210. Toward those still waters like we

1211. read about in Psalm 23.

1212. Sometimes that path is going to

1213. be rocky and difficult and

  1214. dangerous.

1215. But keep taking small steps.

  1216. So what's a small step?

  1217. You can take today.

1218. Maybe God wants to make you a

  1219. more generous person today.

1220. What does God want to do with

  1221. you today?

1222. Phil Wickham sings a song.

  1223. He's a Christian songwriter and

  1224. singer and he says,

  1225. Jesus is the treasure.

  1226. He is the answer.

1227. I choose the Jesus way.

  1228. I love that line.

  1229. He is the treasure.

1230. Too often through this life,

1231. we're looking for the reward

  1232. to meet the effort.

1233. We're saying this Christian thing,

1234. what do I get out of it?

  1235. This church thing,

1236. what do I get out of it?

1237. And if that's your thought,

1238. even if you wouldn't necessarily

  1239. put it to words,

1240. you wouldn't necessarily voice it

  1241. that way,

1242. but you know deep down,

  1243. you're thinking,

1244. what can I really get out of it?

  1245. Then I don't think you've

  1246. encountered Jesus.

  1247. Because if you've really

  1248. experienced Jesus,

1249. look at him in the Bible,

1250. look at who he is.

1251. It'll be pretty obvious to you,

  1252. he's the treasure.

  1253. He's the reward.

1254. And if you need more than him,

  1255. you're out of luck.

1256. Because there's nothing on this earth

1257. that will satisfy like he will.

1258. You can throw it all into family.

1259. Because family never disappoints anybody, right?

1260. You can throw it all into wealth.

  1261. Because that's always stable

1262. and never goes up or down, right?

1263. You can throw it all into anything else

  1264. that people are pursuing.

  1265. But I'm telling you,

  1266. Jesus is the treasure

  1267. that doesn't rust,

1268. that they can't take away.

1269. No one can touch it.

  1270. So our takeaway today

  1271. is what you treasure

1272. tells your eyes where to look,

1273. your hands what to do,

1274. and when Jesus is your treasure,

1275. it's hands open, eyes up.

  1276. God gives.

  1277. Let's try it again.

  1278. God gives.

1279. How do we give back?

  1280. Amen.

  1281. Let's pray.

1282. God, I pray that right now

  1283. you would teach us

  1284. to give freely,

  1285. to pause, to pray,

  1286. to serve your church,

  1287. this church,

  1288. in some small way.

  1289. Hands open, eyes up.

1290. Jesus is my treasure today,

  1291. every day.

1292. I pray that you would

  1293. remind us of that.

  1294. Jesus is our treasure.

  1295. You are our treasure.

  1296. You are the answer.

1297. Let us choose the Jesus way.

  1298. You were so generous.

1299. You held nothing back from us.

  1300. As we study

1301. what you have to teach

  1302. about being generous,

  1303. not just writing checks

1304. like we talked about last week,

1305. but truly being a generous person

  1306. like you were,

1307. teach us this treasure principle.

1308. Help us pass this treasure test

1309. that says you are my treasure.

1310. Everything else is a means to an end.

1311. Everything else can be useful

  1312. or unuseful tools

1313. in our journey toward our Savior.

1314. Teach us how to be like you, God.

1315. Church, with our heads bowed

  1316. and our eyes closed,

1317. I'm going to give you

1318. just a moment to pray.

1319. There's someone in the room

  1320. that says,

1321. you talked a little bit ago

  1322. about Jesus' sacrifice

  1323. for our sin.

1324. I need Him to save me today.

1325. I need to turn from my sin

  1326. and turn to Jesus

  1327. for the first time.

1328. Would you slip your hand up right now

1329. and I'll pray for you.

  1330. Thank you.

1331. Let me ask another question.

1332. How many of you would say,

  1333. I need prayer

1334. about this idea of the treasure?

  1335. Maybe I've been treasuring

  1336. the wrong thing.

  1337. Maybe I've been pursuing

  1338. the wrong thing.

  1339. Maybe I've been

  1340. spiritually sleepwalking.

  1341. Maybe God's put something

  1342. on my heart.

  1343. Maybe there's a way

1344. that I can start serving

  1345. because I treasure Jesus.

  1346. Now, that's my goal.

1347. I want to treasure Jesus.

  1348. There's something in there

  1349. that you say,

  1350. I'd love for you

1351. to pray for me as well.

1352. Would you slip your hand up

  1353. right now

1354. and I'll pray for you.

  1355. Thank you.

  1356. Thank you.

  1357. Thank you.

  1358. Thank you.

1359. God, you see the hands

  1360. all around the room,

  1361. but most importantly,

1362. you know what's going on

1363. in their hearts and minds.

1364. You know what's going on

1365. in my heart and mind?

1366. I pray that you would

  1367. keep teaching me

  1368. and them

1369. how to treasure you, God.

  1370. Wake us up

  1371. from our spiritual sleep.

1372. Remind us what's truly valuable,

1373. what truly gives heavenly return

  1374. on our investment.

1375. And it's in Jesus' name we pray.

  1376. Amen.
