  1. All right, church, are you ready for this?

  2. Let's see if we can get it up on the screen just by way of reminder.

  3. ! God gives.

  4. We give back.

  5. How do we give back?

  6. When it is open to God's love.

  7. That's right.

  8. All right, we have been studying this concept in this series on generosity.

  9. And really the whole point of this is we want your money.

  10. Right?

  11. That was a trick question.

  12. The answer is no.

  13. That is not the whole point of this at all.

  14. If that is what you have been taking away, then I got to tell you, you're just not quite

  15. paying attention very well.

  16. So what I want to draw us to today is Matthew chapter 20.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  17. Would you go to Matthew chapter 20?

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  18. As you're turning there, today's topic is this.

  19. Pick up your towel.

  20. Can you take me to the next slide?

  21. Because this one's not working right now.

  22. There we go.

  23. Thank you all.

  24. I'm going to flip this and see if that does any better.

  25. Pick up your towel.

  26. Anybody got a towel laying nearby you?

  27. No?

  28. No?

  29. Well, I guess we're out of luck then.

  30. Nobody's grabbing their towel today.

  31. Somebody's got a towel.

  32. Yes!

  33. Jaylee had a towel.

  34. Is that a towel or a blanket?

  35. By the way, hi, Jaylee.

  36. Look at it.

  37. We have so many people back from college, from out of town, coming in from Pioneer Union.

  38. It is awesome.

  39. So great to see some of you around.

  40. Matthew chapter 20.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  41. While you are turning there, some of you have already found it.

  42. That's fine.

  43. I want to share just a little story about my college exploits.

  44. And back in college, I was, well, let's just say I had a very prestigious athletic career.

  45. I don't understand why some people immediately laughed at that.

  46. Actually, yes, I was the water boy and the equipment manager.

  47. It was a dual role.

  48. I got to provide water, Gatorade, and wash the towels.

  49. It was great.

  50. Got to pick up a lot of dirty towels.

  51. It was fantastic.

  52. Did a lot of dirty laundry.

  53. Did a lot of mixing Gatorade and had my own special mix.

  54. Did you know it was actually Powerade?

  55. We couldn't afford Gatorade.

  56. Listen, did you know that if you mix lemon-lime Powerade with mountain blast Powerade, it tastes really good.

  57. It comes out green.

  58. It's fantastic.

  59. The guys called it squirrel juice.

  60. It's a long story.

  61. Don't ask.

  62. All right.

  63. Anyway, so yes, I was a very, very high-level athlete such that I washed the towels.

  64. But let me tell you, if I hadn't been there, that team would have been up a creek, man.

  65. I did it for the guys' basketball team.

  66. I did it for the guys' soccer team.

  67. And that was it.

  68. But look, those teams would have failed even more than they did on the field and court had I not been their manager.

  69. We had fun.

  70. We picked up a lot of towels.

  71. But you know, the funny thing is, if you go into any professional team or high-level college team, probably saw a lot of college football yesterday.

  72. If you got home in between Pioneer Union events at all.

  73. And there, of course, the NFL is playing today.

  74. If you walk in and you take away all the equipment staff from those teams, those high-level athletes wouldn't know what to do, man.

  75. It'd be like, how come nobody washed my towel?

  76. How come my locker doesn't smell like lavender like usual?

  77. We got some spoiled athletes out there today.

  78. Look, if you took away the whole equipment staff from all these programs, it would be a whole different ballgame.

  79. That team would not be in the right headspace.

  80. They'd be wearing dirty uniforms.

  81. It would not be any fun at all.

  82. Truth is, nobody's ever going to interview the towel guy.

  83. But he's very essential to the operation of a team.

  84. Now, look, we're having a little fun with it.

  85. But the truth is, you've experienced this too.

  86. How many of you remember COVID when they quit cleaning hotel rooms?

  87. And they just stopped that.

  88. And some of them haven't started back yet.

  89. And I'm pretty sure COVID just gave them an excuse.

  90. They were already not cleaning.

  91. Look, the truth is, when you go and you stay in a hotel and you throw the towel on the floor, what does that mean?

  92. It's dirty.

  93. You want it to be washed, right?

  94. If you hang it up, that means you're going to hold on to it.

  95. By the way, that's great.

  96. I don't think most of you throw the towel on the floor at your own home and then just expect it to magically be washed.

  97. Maybe some of you do.

  98. Some of the wives are like, yes, they do.

  99. They do do that.

  100. It's not right.

  101. The truth is, we don't think about these little menial things.

  102. Towels don't seem very important.

  103. But in Matthew chapter 20 and then over in John chapter 13, towels are very important.

Matthew 20 chapter mention John 13 chapter mention

  104. So I gave you a little sneak peek.

  105. If you want to stick a finger in John 13 or maybe if you've got one of these little ribbon bookmarks, you can put one there.

  106. We're going to go there in just a minute.

  107. But first, Matthew chapter 20, we've been talking about generosity.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  108. And any time you're going to study a subject from the Bible, you've got to go straight to see what Jesus had to say about it first.

  109. And so Jesus gave us a lot of teachings on generosity.

  110. And we've been looking at them for the last few weeks.

  111. And we're going to continue today from this new angle, which is pick up your towel and serve.

  112. Matthew 20 and verse 28, the highlight verse there in this passage said,

  113. The Son of Man came not to, what does that say?

  114. Be served, but to serve others.

  115. He didn't come as high and holy and important as He is.

  116. He didn't come to receive all that honor and be served.

  117. He came to serve others.

  118. So let's look at Matthew chapter 20, beginning in verse 25.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  119. By the way, have y'all noticed that we've been in Matthew quite a bit of this year?

  120. Going back to the very beginning of the year and throughout the year, we've spent more Sundays in the gospel of Matthew than any other book combined from all the other Sundays.

  121. So we're really diving into this gospel and seeing what Jesus has to teach us from it.

  122. Verse 25.

  123. You know, Jesus says, that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them.

  124. Those in high positions act as tyrants over them.

  125. It must not be like that among you.

  126. So if you're going to follow me, that's not how you act.

  127. You want to act like that, go follow them.

  128. My way is different.

  129. On the contrary, he says in verse 26,

  130. Whoever wants to become great among you must be your what?

  131. Servant.

  132. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.

  133. We're going even a little deeper, a little harsher.

  134. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  135. Everybody wants the interview.

  136. Everybody wants the paycheck.

  137. Everybody wants the notoriety, the applause, the pats on the back.

  138. Nobody wants to pick up a towel.

  139. Nobody wants to serve.

  140. But in the kingdom of God, the towel is the sign of true greatness.

  141. This is an indispensable perspective on generous living.

  142. Going beyond ourselves.

  143. Going beyond what we would even want.

  144. And picking up a towel to serve.

  145. So that's what we're talking about today.

  146. The world says, go get a title.

  147. Jesus says, go grab a towel.

  148. There is a distinct difference there, isn't there?

  149. Now this seems pretty obvious.

  150. But the problem is, it still doesn't drive us very often to go pick up a towel.

  151. So, let's go to John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  152. I said we'd get there.

  153. John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  154. And we're going to look at another example where Jesus actually picked up a towel.

  155. John chapter 13 and verse 3.

    John 13 chapter mention

  156. For sake of time, I'm going to go ahead and read.

  157. Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands.

  158. He had come from God.

  159. And he was going back to God.

  160. So he got up from supper.

  161. Laid aside his outer clothing.

  162. Took a towel.

  163. And tied it around himself.

  164. Next he poured water into a basin.

  165. And began to wash his disciples' feet.

  166. And to dry them with a towel tied around him.

  167. Do you see what Jesus is doing here?

  168. He's stooping.

  169. Humbling himself.

  170. The Bible says Jesus literally stepped off of his heavenly throne.

  171. Took upon him the form of a mighty conquering king.

  172. Right?

  173. No.

  174. Took upon him the form of a servant.

  175. Was made in the likeness of humble men.

  176. Just like you.

  177. And just like me.

  178. And being found in fashion as a man.

  179. He humbled himself.

  180. He was obedient.

  181. Even to his death on the cross.

  182. He went all the way down to the bottom.

  183. All the way down to death.

  184. To a sad, unfortunate ending to his story on this earth.

  185. That's what Jesus did.

  186. We get to look back with the benefit of hindsight.

  187. And say, no, no, no.

  188. That wasn't the end.

  189. He rose from the dead.

  190. Yeah, but nobody knew that.

  191. Even though he had said, I will tear this temple down.

  192. And build it back in three days.

  193. And they all thought he was talking about the temple in Jerusalem.

  194. And he was talking about his body.

  195. But even though we get to look back.

  196. Knowing the end of the story.

  197. To those who had walked with him.

  198. They didn't even all get it.

  199. To those who had listened and heard him teach.

  200. And seen him do mighty miracles.

  201. But he was always poor.

  202. He never owned anything.

  203. He never had a permanent home.

  204. Came from humble beginnings.

  205. His life seemed to have a sad conclusion.

  206. That's what he endured.

  207. He didn't come down.

  208. Riding a great white horse.

  209. And coming in as the conquering king.

  210. To free the Jewish people from Roman oppression.

  211. That's what they wanted.

  212. But it's not what he did.

  213. Because he knew the secret.

  214. He knew that you and I must learn to live humbly.

  215. You and I must learn to knock ourselves down a few pegs.

  216. And be willing to pick up a towel and serve someone else.

  217. And so even here.

  218. Shortly before.

  219. His death.

  220. He stoops.

  221. Washes his disciples dirty feet.

  222. Nasty from out there.

  223. Walking through.

  224. The dust and the dirt.

  225. In those open sandals.

  226. And he washes them.

  227. And he dries them with the towel.

  228. What an act of service.

  229. And of course Peter.

  230. Is fighting him every step of the way.

  231. No, no God.

  232. Don't do that.

  233. Don't do that.

  234. He said, well if I don't wash your feet.

  235. You can't be one of mine.

  236. That is the mark.

  237. Of being a disciple of Jesus.

  238. He serves us.

  239. And then commissions us.

  240. To serve others.

  241. He humbled himself.

  242. Made himself the lowest of the low.

  243. So you and I could be saved.

  244. So we could be forgiven.

  245. And then he showed us.

  246. The pathway.

  247. The template.

  248. The model.

  249. The example.

  250. Of how to live.

  251. And it was that.

  252. It was humbling yourself.

  253. And picking up a towel.

  254. So skip down now.

  255. To verse 12.

  256. When Jesus had washed their feet.

  257. And put on his outer clothing.

  258. He reclined again.

  259. And said to them.

  260. Do you know what I have done for you?

  261. You call me teacher and Lord.

  262. And you're speaking rightly.

  263. Because that's what I am.

  264. So if I.

  265. Your Lord.

  266. And your teacher.

  267. Have washed your feet.

  268. You think you guys also ought to wash each other's feet?

  269. What a powerful point.

  270. He didn't just sit there.

  271. As we probably would have done.

  272. I would have gotten up here.

  273. And preached a sermon.

  274. On how we ought to serve each other.

  275. Jesus didn't preach a sermon.

  276. He actually did it.

  277. He actually got down there.

  278. And modeled it for them.

  279. And it was gross.

  280. And it was nasty.

  281. And there were a lot of them.

  282. And his back probably hurt.

  283. By the time he was done.

  284. And over and over again.

  285. He washed their feet.

  286. And dried them with the towel.

  287. And he said.

  288. You guys.

  289. Ought to serve each other.

  290. Like this.

  291. So.

  292. Number one.

  293. Serving.

  294. Is generosity.

  295. In action.

  296. Serving.

  297. Is generosity.

  298. In action.

  299. Do you understand?

  300. That we can say.

  301. That we'll be generous.

  302. And what is the first thing.

  303. That comes to your mind.

  304. When somebody says.

  305. Generosity.

  306. Generosity.

  307. Set yourself apart.

  308. From what we've studied.

  309. In this series.

  310. All right.

  311. Just.

  312. Not thinking about.

  313. Biblical.

  314. Jesus.

  315. Generosity.

  316. But if somebody just said.

  317. Oh.

  318. He's a generous guy.

  319. What do you think.

  320. That means.

  321. Money.

  322. Right.

  323. They give.

  324. They give money away.

  325. You can give money away.

  326. Without being generous.

  327. Have we gotten that.

  328. Through our heads by now.

  329. I'm still trying to get that.

  330. Through my head.

  331. You can give money away.

  332. Without being generous.

  333. You can donate to charities.

  334. Without being generous.

  335. You can hand.

  336. A five dollar bill.

  337. Or a twenty dollar bill.

  338. To a homeless person.

  339. Without being generous.

  340. What matters.

  341. Whether you're generous or not.

  342. Is the condition of your heart.

  343. The how.

  344. And the why.

  345. Jesus has always been.

  346. Far more concerned.

  347. With the how.

  348. And the why.

  349. Rather than the what.

  350. The what.

  351. Can change.

  352. The what.

  353. Will adapt.

  354. To different situations.

  355. The what.

  356. For you.

  357. Might be different.

  358. Than the what.

  359. For somebody else.

  360. But the how.

  361. And the why.

  362. Will be the same.

  363. Because that.

  364. Is the change.

  365. God makes.

  366. On the inside.

  367. That's choosing.

  368. The Jesus way.

  369. All our life.

  370. He's been faithful.

  371. To us.

  372. We just heard.

  373. Heather and Jared.

  374. And the choir.

  375. Sing.

  376. All our life.

  377. He's been so good.

  378. He's been so.

  379. Generous.

  380. To us.

  381. He wants to teach us.

  382. How to be generous.

  383. That involves.

  384. Action.

  385. That involves.

  386. Serving.

  387. That involves.

  388. Going beyond.

  389. Just writing.

  390. A check.

  391. That goes.

  392. Into the area.

  393. Of giving.

  394. Yourself.

  395. There's a truth here.

  396. You can give.

  397. And we're talking.

  398. About money.

  399. You can give.

  400. Without making it.

  401. Personal.

  402. Can't you?

  403. Sometimes.

  404. It's easy.

  405. Just to cut a check.

  406. And get them.

  407. Off your doorstep.

  408. Sometimes.

  409. It's easier.

  410. Just to buy.

  411. The box.

  412. Of girl stout cookies.

  413. So they'll quit asking.

  414. Right?

  415. And then you eat them.

  416. And you're like.

  417. Oh yeah.

  418. Those are delicious.

  419. After you've frozen.

  420. The thin mints.

  421. Because everybody knows.

  422. Thin mints.

  423. Are best frozen.

  424. If you haven't had that.

  425. You're welcome.

  426. For the tip.

  427. So you can give.

  428. Without personally.

  429. Actually getting involved.

  430. But you can't serve.

  431. Without getting involved.

  432. You can't serve.

  433. Without making it.

  434. Personal.

  435. Whether you're doing it.

  436. Begrudgingly.

  437. Even if you don't.

  438. Really want to be there.

  439. You know what often happens.

  440. When you show up.

  441. And you serve.

  442. Anyway.

  443. The service.

  444. This changes your heart.

  445. It changes your want to.

  446. The feelings end up catching up.

  447. God just needed you to get your ugly mug out there.

  448. So he could use it.

  449. Right?

  450. It's been my experience at least.

  451. There's always a difference.

  452. There's always a difference.

  453. In how we look at other people.

  454. And how Jesus looks at us.

  455. We judge people whether they're worthy of our service.

  456. Whether we approve of this particular cause.

  457. Whatever it is.

  458. We have a high set of standards.

  459. Right?

  460. I don't know.

  461. I'm not sure what that person would do with the money.

  462. I don't know.

  463. What do they support?

  464. What has that organization ever supported or given money to in their time?

  465. And I'm not saying we don't be responsible with what God's given to us.

  466. But listen.

  467. There's a difference in the mindset.

  468. We've been talking about this the last couple of weeks.

  469. Bounded set versus centered set.

  470. I'm not going to spend a long time on it.

  471. But I just want to remind you of it and bring it back in.

  472. We are often bounded set.

  473. We create these boundaries.

  474. Think about this circle.

  475. These lines.

  476. And whoever's on the inside.

  477. That's our crowd.

  478. And whoever's on the outside.

  479. That's not our crowd.

  480. We don't affiliate with them.

  481. We don't associate with them.

  482. We don't want to be around them.

  483. They're not welcome here.

  484. That is often how we judge others.

  485. Jesus says, no.

  486. It's not about the lines that you've set.

  487. Because the problem is everybody's lines are going to be different.

  488. Your boundaries are going to be different than mine.

  489. And the person next to you.

  490. Maybe even your spouse.

  491. Maybe even your kids.

  492. You're going to have slightly different lines or boundaries.

  493. But listen.

  494. Jesus doesn't judge us that way.

  495. He judges us whether we're moving toward him or away from him.

  496. It's all about Jesus.

  497. So you might be coming from up here or down here or over here or over here.

  498. But if you're moving toward Jesus, he's drawing you in.

  499. And if you're moving away from him, he's trying to get you back.

  500. You might be inside those lines.

  501. But you might be moving away from Jesus.

  502. That is the condition of the heart.

  503. And that shows us whether we're generous.

  504. And often that determines on who we'll serve.

  505. Usually we only want to serve people or do things for people that we get along with.

  506. That fit inside our lines.

  507. Jesus says we're supposed to serve everybody.

  508. Even our enemies.

  509. That's the hard part.

  510. If you look across America today, it is as fractured, as divided as it's ever been.

  511. And one side, by and large, sees the other side as enemies and vice versa.

  512. You know what Jesus says?

  513. Love them.

  514. Love your enemies.

  515. Do good to them.

  516. That's a hard thing.

  517. But it shows us not only whether we're generous, but if we're following Jesus.

  518. If we're actually moving toward him.

  519. So, Romans 12 and verse 1.

  520. Paul talks about it.

  521. We see this teaching from Jesus.

  522. And then each Sunday we're able to find similar teaching from Paul.

  523. Because he studied Jesus.

  524. And he had an encounter with Jesus.

  525. And he met Jesus.

  526. And Jesus guided his teaching.

  527. And so in Romans 12 and verse 1.

  528. Dear brothers and sisters.

  529. I plead with you to give your bodies to God.

  530. That's not just writing a check.

  531. That's service.

  532. Those are action words.

  533. Give your bodies to God.

  534. Because of all he's done for you.

  535. That's our motivation.

  536. That's our why.

  537. Because of what Jesus did for me.

  538. Because of what Jesus did for you on the cross.

  539. And if you don't know that story.

  540. Then stick around and anybody here will be happy to tell you.

  541. How Jesus hung on a cross.

  542. Gave up his life for your sin and for mine.

  543. And then didn't stay dead.

  544. He proved that he was God.

  545. By doing what he said and coming back to life.

  546. God raised him from the dead.

  547. And now he's alive today.

  548. And offers forgiveness for your sin.

  549. Cleansing from all your sin.

  550. Past, present, and future.

  551. And that's the gospel.

  552. John 3.16 says,

  553. For God so loved the world,

  554. He gave His one and only Son,

  555. that whoever believes in Him will not perish,

  556. will not have to pay for the punishment for your sin,

  557. but will have eternal life.

  558. So he said, because of that,

  559. because of what God's done for you,

  560. let your bodies be a living and holy sacrifice.

  561. That's a scary word.

  562. Sacrifice.

  563. How many of you have looked in the Old Testament

  564. and you've seen all the animal sacrifices

  565. written about in there?

  566. How many of you are glad

  567. we don't do animal sacrifices

  568. in the name of God today anymore?

  569. That's really good, right?

  570. It would be weird.

  571. They'd be calling us a cult.

  572. But we don't do that anymore.

  573. Because Jesus was the final sacrifice.

  574. And now He's saying,

  575. I don't need a dead sacrifice from you.

  576. I need a living sacrifice from you.

  577. I need to offer,

  578. I need you to offer up your body alive and well.

  579. And useful for my purposes on earth

  580. because my purposes are higher and greater

  581. and better than your purposes.

  582. And if you write over a blank check

  583. with your life to me,

  584. then I will take that check

  585. and do much better for it,

  586. with it,

  587. for you than you ever could on your own.

  588. So let Him be a living and holy sacrifice.

  589. Not an own holy sacrifice.

  590. A holy set-apart sacrifice.

  591. Saying, God, I'm setting this apart for you.

  592. That's what makes it holy.

  593. It's not that you're perfect.

  594. It's not that you never mess up.

  595. It's not that you ever have an impure thought.

  596. It's not that you never do something

  597. that you wish you hadn't done five seconds later.

  598. Or said something that you wish you hadn't said.

  599. Maybe online.

  600. Yes, those are unholy, unrighteous things.

  601. But what makes it a holy sacrifice

  602. is when you offer it all up

  603. and you don't hold back.

  604. Holding back makes it an unholy sacrifice.

  605. But when you say, God, here I am.

  606. As messy and messed up as it is.

  607. I'm giving it to you.

  608. That's what makes it a living and holy sacrifice.

  609. And that's what He finds acceptable.

  610. This is truly the way to worship Him.

  611. Showing up at church on Sunday morning

  612. and singing, I will sing of the goodness of God.

  613. That's not the way to worship Him.

  614. That's a way to worship Him.

  615. But if you're not willing

  616. to offer yourself and all your mess

  617. as a living and holy sacrifice to God,

  618. then those words are hollow.

  619. Those words aren't worship.

  620. They're just words.

  621. So this is the way to worship.

  622. Number two, and we're almost done.

  623. God's kingdom grows

  624. when we grab our towels.

  625. Matthew chapter 5 and verse 16.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  626. Let your light shine before others.

  627. Let your light shine before others

  628. that they may see your good deeds

  629. and glorify your Father in heaven.

  630. Did you catch the difference there?

  631. It doesn't say,

  632. let your light shine before others

  633. so they can see your good deeds

  634. and think what a great gal or guy you are.

  635. That's not what it's about.

  636. It's about glorifying God.

  637. How does God get the glory?

  638. When we give Him the credit.

  639. When we do something for someone

  640. and say, you know,

  641. Jesus did everything for me,

  642. so I want to do whatever I can for you.

  643. That's how God gets the credit

  644. and that's how they end up giving Him the glory.

  645. That's letting our light shine.

  646. Not just doing something for someone,

  647. but letting the light of Jesus shine through you.

  648. That's the difference.

  649. So, I want to share this with you.

  650. The church doesn't grow on the gifts of a few,

  651. but on the service of many.

  652. It will take all of us

  653. letting our light shine

  654. to really see God's kingdom grow

  655. right here at First Baptist Henrietta.

  656. It's not just going to take the gifts

  657. or the talent or the service of me,

  658. Jared, Megan,

  659. the committee leaders,

  660. the choir members,

  661. the ushers,

  662. the Sunday school teachers,

  663. the people who really get involved, right?

  664. The people who are really committed.

  665. It's going to take all of us.

  666. It's going to take the service of many

  667. letting our light shine

  668. Monday through Saturday,

  669. not just on Sunday

  670. and not just on Wednesday night.

  671. It's letting God change us

  672. and letting that change shine out

  673. as messy as it can be sometimes.

  674. But when God does something through us,

  675. we say,

  676. that's God in me.

  677. And then the longer we walk with Jesus,

  678. the less messy it gets

  679. because He changes us.

  680. He conforms us into His image.

  681. So,

  682. God's kingdom grows

  683. when we grab our towels.

  684. What's the towel that you need to grab?

  685. What's a task

  686. that God has for you

  687. that seems beneath you,

  688. seems like something

  689. you just don't want to do?

  690. But that's a towel

  691. that you can grab

  692. and a service

  693. that you can do

  694. for God

  695. because of all He's done for us.

  696. What have we learned today?

  697. Number one,

  698. Jesus values

  699. willing service

  700. over self-importance.

  701. Every time,

  702. self-importance

  703. will lead you

  704. further away from Jesus,

  705. not toward Him.

  706. You can be self-important

  707. and stay inside that circle

  708. of how people think

  709. Christians ought to be.

  710. But you can't be self-important

  711. and moving toward Jesus.

  712. It's impossible.

  713. So,

  714. what He wants to teach you

  715. instead is willing service.

  716. Number two,

  717. serving God

  718. doesn't usually look glamorous.

  719. It usually looks like

  720. grabbing a towel.

  721. It usually looks like

  722. washing somebody's feet.

  723. It usually looks like

  724. going out of your way

  725. to do something

  726. for somebody else.

  727. It usually looks like

  728. seeing a need in the church

  729. and saying,

  730. you know what?

  731. I'm going to step in

  732. and fill that gap.

  733. I'm going to step up

  734. out of my comfort zone

  735. because I'm not serving them.

  736. I'm serving God

  737. and God wants me

  738. to serve them.

  739. And then number three,

  740. humbling ourselves

  741. can draw others

  742. to follow Jesus.

  743. When we pick up a towel,

  744. it says something

  745. to everybody else around us.

  746. when we dress up nice

  747. and dare not say a bad word

  748. and we go around

  749. looking important

  750. and say,

  751. I don't miss a Sunday

  752. over there

  753. at First Baptist Church, man.

  754. That probably doesn't draw

  755. very many people to Jesus.

  756. What does draw people to Jesus

  757. is when we go out of our way

  758. to help them

  759. and we give God

  760. the credit for it.

  761. humbling ourselves

  762. can literally draw

  763. other people

  764. into choosing

  765. to follow Jesus

  766. and that could get them

  767. out of an eternal hell,

  768. a punishment for their sin

  769. and into an eternal relationship

  770. with Jesus

  771. which will land them

  772. in heaven with God forever.

  773. You can change

  774. someone's destiny.

  775. I can change

  776. someone's destiny.

  777. We can do it

  778. by humbling ourselves.

  779. You all know

  780. who this guy is?

  781. What's that?

  782. AI.

  783. Well, yes,

  784. it is, I believe,

  785. an AI picture

  786. but that guy

  787. is a real guy

  788. who lived

  789. and is no longer alive.

  790. President John F. Kennedy

  791. many years ago

  792. toured NASA.

  793. Everybody know

  794. what NASA is,

  795. right?

  796. Right?

  797. astronauts.

  798. JFK was touring NASA.

  799. It was pretty cool.

  800. This was the height

  801. of the space race.

  802. America was going

  803. to the moon.

  804. Everybody was excited.

  805. They were racing Russia

  806. to try to get there first.

  807. It's a lot of confidence

  808. in America

  809. and their space program

  810. and all that

  811. and everybody was,

  812. a lot of money

  813. was being thrown at it

  814. so JFK goes

  815. and tours NASA

  816. as the president

  817. and he's talking

  818. with all the important people

  819. and the scientists

  820. and the astronauts

  821. and everybody

  822. and then they're walking

  823. him through a hallway

  824. and he sees this guy.

  825. He was a janitor

  826. and JFK

  827. trying to be

  828. a good leader,

  829. trying to notice

  830. the little people,

  831. he stops

  832. and he says,

  833. sir,

  834. what's your name

  835. and what do you do here?

  836. And the guy

  837. gave his name.

  838. I think it was Roy something

  839. and he said,

  840. Mr. President,

  841. I'm putting a man

  842. on the moon.

  843. He was the janitor

  844. but he felt like

  845. he was putting

  846. a man on the moon.

  847. Why?

  848. Because if they didn't

  849. have the facility,

  850. then they wouldn't

  851. be able to send

  852. a man to the moon

  853. and if they didn't

  854. keep the facility clean,

  855. then it wouldn't

  856. be usable.

  857. He had done the math

  858. and he had figured out

  859. my job is essential

  860. to the mission.

  861. My job

  862. will help

  863. put someone

  864. on the moon.

  865. If they didn't

  866. have me,

  867. they couldn't do it.

  868. I really believe

  869. God wants to get

  870. that mindset

  871. in every one

  872. of us here today.

  873. You might look up

  874. at me who gets up

  875. here most Sundays

  876. and preaches.

  877. You might look

  878. at Jared who leads

  879. the singing.

  880. You might look

  881. at Heather and the

  882. others in the choir

  883. who have these

  884. beautiful voices

  885. and they lead us

  886. in singing

  887. and they get more

  888. face time

  889. than most people.

  890. Maybe you're a child

  891. and you think

  892. of your Sunday

  893. school teacher,

  894. oh, they're the one,

  895. you know,

  896. that they're really

  897. getting it done.

  898. Maybe you're thinking

  899. of the building

  900. and grounds committee

  901. that goes around

  902. and puts in such

  903. time and labor

  904. into this church

  905. keeping the property

  906. up and guiding

  907. us forward.

  908. The finance committee,

  909. the committee

  910. on committees,

  911. that's a thing.

  912. All these

  913. different committees

  914. spend so much

  915. of their time

  916. but I promise you

  917. it's not just

  918. the people

  919. who sit around

  920. making important

  921. decisions.

  922. It's not just

  923. the people

  924. who actively

  925. are up in front

  926. of people

  927. on Sundays.

  928. It's the people

  929. who pick up

  930. the trash

  931. in the pew

  932. or on the floor.

  933. It's the people

  934. who show up

  935. and pray

  936. when nobody

  937. else is praying.

  938. It's the people

  939. who stop

  940. and check on

  941. somebody

  942. who just seems

  943. like they're

  944. not themselves.

  945. It's the people

  946. who go over

  947. to somebody

  948. they don't recognize

  949. and introduce

  950. themselves

  951. and say,

  952. welcome,

  953. thank you for

  954. joining us today.

  955. That is what

  956. sends the man

  957. to the moon.

  958. That is what

  959. builds God's

  960. kingdom on this

  961. earth.

  962. Let us not

  963. be another

  964. self-important

  965. First Baptist

  966. church in

  967. small town

  968. Texas.

  969. There are

  970. plenty of them.

  971. Okay?

  972. And I'm not

  973. going to go

  974. around naming

  975. names.

  976. I wouldn't

  977. want to do

  978. that and I'd

  979. probably get

  980. it wrong.

  981. But y'all

  982. know I'm not

  983. wrong.

  984. We don't

  985. have to be

  986. that.

  987. We can

  988. recognize

  989. that God

  990. needs every

  991. single one

  992. of us,

  993. myself included,

  994. to stop

  995. what we're

  996. doing and

  997. pick up a

  998. towel sometimes

  999. or grab a

  1000. broom and

  1001. sweep or

  1002. speak a kind

  1003. word to

  1004. somebody else.

  1005. Greatness in

  1006. God's kingdom

  1007. isn't found in

  1008. grabbing a

  1009. title.

  1010. It's found in

  1011. picking up a

  1012. towel.

  1013. When you

  1014. change a

  1015. baby's diaper

  1016. in the nursery,

  1017. what are you

  1018. doing?

  1019. You're actually

  1020. building God's

  1021. kingdom.

  1022. kingdom.

  1023. When you

  1024. pick up trash

  1025. in the pews,

  1026. you're not

  1027. just picking up

  1028. trash, you're

  1029. building God's

  1030. kingdom.

  1031. When you step

  1032. out of your

  1033. comfort zone and

  1034. volunteer to help

  1035. out in a kid's

  1036. Sunday school

  1037. class, you're

  1038. not just helping

  1039. a kid's Sunday

  1040. school class,

  1041. you're building

  1042. God's kingdom.

  1043. When you click

  1044. through the words

  1045. on the computer

  1046. up there so the

  1047. screen changes on

  1048. time for the

  1049. songs, you're not

  1050. just clicking a

  1051. button, you're

  1052. building God's

  1053. kingdom.

  1054. kingdom.

  1055. This is what I'm

  1056. talking about when I

  1057. say pick up a

  1058. towel.

  1059. So, we build

  1060. God's kingdom when

  1061. we pick up a

  1062. towel.

  1063. How do we do

  1064. that this week?

  1065. Sign up for

  1066. service.

  1067. Sign up for

  1068. service.

  1069. You can go back,

1070. you can check in at

  1071. the office, they'll

  1072. give you a gazillion

  1073. different ministries

  1074. that you could sign

  1075. up for.

  1076. Right now, I'll

  1077. mention the sound

  1078. deck up there.

  1079. Harlan's up there

  1080. clicking through the

  1081. slides, Matt's up

  1082. there at the

  1083. sound deck, they

  1084. need more people.

  1085. We had somebody

  1086. retire from after

  1087. years of serving up

  1088. there, they retired

  1089. from that.

  1090. We need somebody to

  1091. take their place.

1092. We need to see this

  1093. choir loft filled.

  1094. We need more people

  1095. involved in the

  1096. children's ministry

  1097. to specifically the

  1098. nursery.

  1099. There are ways

  1100. right now today for

1101. you to pick up a

  1102. towel.

  1103. So, sign up for

  1104. service.

  1105. Try it out.

1106. If God tells you it's

  1107. a bad fit, try

  1108. something else out.

1109. But try it out first.

1110. And let's see how it

  1111. goes.

  1112. And number two, look

  1113. for more opportunities.

  1114. Don't just say, all

1115. right, I signed up to

1116. help with a kids class,

  1117. now I'm done.

  1118. Keep picking up a

  1119. towel wherever you

  1120. go.

  1121. Church, let's say it

  1122. together.

  1123. God gives.

1124. How do we give back?

  1125. And so

  1126. give us back.

1127. So let's pick up our

  1128. towels.

  1129. God, right now I

  1130. pray that you would

1131. show us the towel you

1132. have for us to pick

  1133. up.

  1134. You stopped what you

  1135. were doing.

  1136. You humbled yourself.

1137. You got down and you

  1138. washed your disciples'

  1139. feet.

1140. You dried them with the

  1141. towel.

1142. Help us to be willing

1143. to go to that level for

  1144. each other, for you,

1145. for those that you love

  1146. and died for.

1147. We'll give you all the

  1148. glory for it.

  1149. We'll praise you.

  1150. We'll see the change

  1151. that you're making in

  1152. us.

  1153. And it's in Jesus'

  1154. name we pray.

  1155. Amen.
