  1. Would you take your copy of the Word of God and turn with me to Luke chapter 22?

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Luke chapter 22, we're going to look at verse 14.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  4. In just a few minutes, we are going to take communion together, or otherwise known as

  5. the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Table.

  6. How many of you grew up in church taking communion or the Lord's Supper?

  7. Would you slip your hand up?

  8. Good.

  9. For many of you, this will be very familiar.

  10. It'll feel normal.

  11. The bread, the cup, the quiet reflection.

  12. It's part of what we do in church.

  13. For some of you, if you didn't grow up that way, it might feel very strange what we're

  14. about to do.

  15. And if we stop and think about it, it is kind of a strange practice.

  16. But we're going to look at what Jesus teaches about it and say, why do we do this?

  17. Why do we pass out a tiny little cracker and a tiny little cup of grape juice?

  18. And why do we read in scripture that Jesus says, when you do this, this is my body and

  19. this is my blood?

  20. Sounds weird, doesn't it?

  21. If you think about it.

  22. If you didn't grow up with it and you're not used to it, then it might feel strange.

  23. But it's also easy for those of us who did grow up with it to forget how truly radical

  24. this is, how truly life-changing this practice is supposed to be.

  25. So let's look at Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  26. We'll look at verse 19 first.

  27. And he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it.

  28. And he gave it to them.

  29. Of course, this is Jesus doing this.

  30. And he said, this is my body given for you.

  31. Do this in remembrance of me.

  32. In the same way, after the supper, he took the cup saying, this cup is the new covenant

  33. in my blood, which is poured out for you.

  34. That's what this moment is all about.

  35. Jesus for us.

  36. You can actually summarize and reduce the gospel message or the good news story of Jesus down

  37. to those three words.

  38. Jesus for us.

  39. He took our place.

  40. And what he was doing with this practice, which he then said, do it in remembrance of me as

  41. often as you'll do it.

  42. Some churches do it every single Sunday, every time they meet.

  43. Some churches do it once a month.

  44. This church does it four times a year quarterly.

  45. We'll gather together and we'll remember what Jesus did for us.

  46. But it's not just a ritual.

  47. So much more than a ritual.

  48. And it's not just a reenactment.

  49. We're not just putting the famous picture of the Lord's Supper and Jesus and his disciples

  50. up on the screen and trying to reenact what Jesus did.

  51. It's so much more than that.

  52. It's a declaration that the entire story of God and his dealings with man, thousands of

  53. years long, written across generations and covenants and kings, has reached its climax

  54. with sacrifice.

  55. And that's what we're going to talk about today.

  56. Sacrifice.

  57. Covenants.

  58. The promise and the price.

  59. A promise made long before you or I was born.

  60. And a price that was paid when you and I could not pay anything back.

  61. So let's look at number one, the price.

  62. What sacrifice really is.

  63. What sacrifice really is.

  64. We read it just a moment ago.

  65. Jesus took the bread.

  66. He gave it.

  67. He broke it.

  68. And he said, this is my body given for you.

  69. This was the sacrifice.

  70. He said, this cup is my blood poured out for you.

  71. There was a real cost, a real price to be paid in this situation.

  72. Why was that?

  73. Jesus said, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  74. Let's stop there for a moment and figure out what he's teaching us.

  75. No rabbi, Jewish rabbi.

  76. Remember, it's easy.

  77. We had our starting point course this morning.

  78. Just kick off upstairs, room 203.

  79. If you're not in Sunday school, come jump in and join us in room 203 with our starting point class.

  80. But we stopped and we had to say, look, it's easy to just look at the Christian faith as we see it today and forget its roots.

  81. Forget its origins.

  82. You realize that Jesus was seen as a Jewish rabbi.

  83. And so people expected him to be like the other Jewish rabbis or teachers.

  84. But he wasn't.

  85. He was saying different things.

  86. He was teaching radically different things than anyone else was teaching.

  87. And ultimately, he came to say that I am God.

  88. I am the Messiah.

  89. I am the one that you've been waiting for.

  90. I'm not here just to teach you about God.

  91. I'm here to reveal God to you.

  92. It's me.

  93. My father has sent me.

  94. So we have to go back to the beginnings and remember that this is the faith that we're holding on to.

  95. It's this radical spinoff of that Jewish faith that turns it on its head and says, now it's all about Jesus.

  96. It's not about the law anymore.

  97. It's not about the Ten Commandments anymore.

  98. It's not about impressing God.

  99. It's about the person of Jesus choosing him and following him.

  100. And so no rabbi had ever said, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  101. The old covenants were treasured by the Jewish people.

  102. They were lifted up.

  103. They were held onto as precious gifts from God.

  104. And Jesus is here to introduce a new covenant.

  105. No teacher had ever dared to make himself the sacrifice.

  106. But that's exactly what Jesus was.

  107. He wasn't just teaching us about forgiveness.

  108. He was literally purchasing forgiveness with his blood.

  109. The language we read in the New Testament about what Jesus did on the cross for us is transactional.

  110. He bought us back.

  111. The word is redeemed.

  112. He purchased us with his blood.

  113. Why?

  114. Why was that necessary?

  115. Because you and I had sinned.

  116. You and I still sin, don't we?

  117. We still break God's laws.

  118. We still go astray.

  119. Every one of us has gone into our own ways.

  120. And God has poured out on his son, Jesus, the iniquity or the sin, the wrongdoing of all of us.

  121. He took the punishment.

  122. He was the sacrifice.

  123. But we cheapen the word sacrifice.

  124. We'll use the word sacrifice in our day-to-day life.

  125. You say, I sacrificed my Saturday morning to go help somebody move.

  126. Maybe that was a sacrifice in your mind, but it pales in comparison to the real sacrifice that Jesus was, right?

  127. Say, I sacrificed my dessert for my diet.

  128. Sometimes that feels like a sacrifice, all right?

  129. Let's be real.

  130. They just gave me a bunch of candy.

  131. And I'm trying to think, how much of that can I actually eat?

  132. How much of that do I have to sacrifice and give away to you people?

  133. But the sacrifices we make are not real sacrifices.

  134. Jesus was a sacrifice.

  135. He gave everything.

  136. He paid the ultimate price.

  137. In the Bible, sacrifice isn't about inconvenience.

  138. It's about substitution.

  139. Placing yourself in someone else's place to receive wrath, to receive penalty, to receive suffering.

  140. Something or someone dies so that someone else can live.

  141. The Jewish people would have understood that.

  142. Because animal sacrifices had been dating back to their earliest origins.

  143. The very beginning, God had commanded them to take their very best of their flocks and go sacrifice it as a penalty, as a payment for their sins, their wrongdoing.

  144. And all this, it was never about the animals.

  145. It was all pointing forward to Jesus, who would be the ultimate final sacrifice.

  146. So we don't go out and do animal sacrifices because Jesus was the final one.

  147. So they would have understood that term.

  148. And they would have understood the strength that came behind it when Jesus painted himself as the sacrifice.

  149. And that's what he was saying.

  150. This bread that you tear apart means that I'm about to be torn apart.

  151. This bread that you break is like my body, which is about to be broken.

  152. This cup shows you that I'm about to bleed.

  153. It's not a theory.

  154. It's not something for us to argue about.

  155. This is the cost.

  156. This is the price for forgiveness.

  157. This is the price for forgiveness.

  158. Communion reminds us that grace is free, but it's never cheap.

  159. Grace is free, but it's never cheap.

  160. It came at a great cost.

  161. Jesus' own life.

  162. Jesus' own blood.

  163. We thank God that in power he raised him back up from the dead.

  164. But that does not minimize the suffering, the real pain and anguish and torment and death that Jesus experienced on that cross.

  165. So when we pause in our annual calendar and we stop everything else we're doing and we stop to remember what Jesus did,

  166. let us remember the words that we read in John chapter 10 and verse 18.

    John 10 chapter mention

  167. No one takes my life from me, Jesus said.

  168. I lay it down of my own accord.

  169. I lay it down willingly.

  170. Not only was he a sacrifice, he was a willing sacrifice.

  171. And so then when we read in Romans chapter 12 and verses 1 and 2 and he says,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  172. now you go and be a willing sacrifice for me,

  173. it's a whole lot easier for someone to tell you that when they've been a willing sacrifice for you.

  174. You say, what have you ever done for me?

  175. Why would you ask all of this?

  176. Why would you ask me to dedicate my life to you when you've never done anything for me?

  177. But Jesus can look at us and say, I did everything for you.

  178. I gave everything for you.

  179. I held nothing back.

  180. Now with that picture of generosity, we've just spent the last six weeks studying how generous God was toward us

  181. and how he wants us to be generous in return.

  182. He can say, this is generosity displayed.

  183. Me on the cross as the sacrifice, the willing sacrifice for you.

  184. Those people might have thought they took my life for me,

  185. but that was always the plan from the very beginning.

  186. You can look back at the prophets and see their prediction of this son of God

  187. who would willingly lay down his life and suffer just as he did on that cross.

  188. So God's grace is given freely to us now today, but it was not cheap.

  189. It cost Jesus everything.

  190. And that's the second part.

  191. Jesus didn't lose his life.

  192. He gave it.

  193. He offered it up willingly.

  194. He wasn't the victim here.

  195. He was the author of this story.

  196. He wasn't the victim of sacrifice.

  197. He was the author of it.

  198. This was according to God's plan.

  199. Out of his great love, he offered up his greatest treasure,

  200. his greatest possession.

  201. John 3, 16 calls it his only begotten son.

  202. The greatest he had.

  203. And he said, I give it to you.

  204. From the very beginning, God's people knew that sin carried a price.

  205. In the Garden of Eden, when God created everything, Adam and Eve sinned,

  206. and an animal had to die to clothe their shame.

  207. In Exodus, a lamb's blood marked the doors so that the death angel would pass over.

  208. At the temple, sacrifice after sacrifice was offered as a substitute for sin.

  209. And all of it was pointing to this when Jesus would give his life on a hill called Calvary,

  210. a cross where the Lamb of God, the final sacrifice, would take away the sin of the world.

  211. And here's the part that just staggers you, staggers me.

  212. No one forced him.

  213. If I knew that what Jesus endured was waiting around the corner,

  214. I would have walked away.

  215. Jesus even knelt in the garden the night before and said,

  216. God, let this cup pass from me.

  217. In his humanity, knowing what he was about to endure,

  218. it almost seems as though he prayed,

  219. is there any other way?

  220. But then he came back to,

  221. not my will, but yours be done.

  222. This is the love that Jesus has for us.

  223. This is the love that the Father has for us.

  224. He would endure any amount of suffering.

  225. He would endure any amount of pain.

  226. So you and I could have a path to forgiveness.

  227. So you and I could have a fresh start with Jesus.

  228. So you and I could have eternal security for all time as the children of God.

  229. But that was impossible.

  230. The relationship was broken.

  231. There was no way we could undo what we as humans had done and continue to do.

  232. So there had to be a willing sacrifice.

  233. And there was.

  234. And that was the price that had to be paid.

  235. But thank God there's also a promise there.

  236. And that's number two.

  237. The promise is what his blood really means.

  238. In just a few minutes, we're going to take the cup and we're going to drink it.

  239. And Jesus says, this symbolizes my blood.

  240. This represents my blood that was poured out on the cross.

  241. Back in Luke 22, look at the phrase that Jesus uses with the cup.

  242. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  243. We're going to talk about what that covenant means.

  244. If you've been in church a while, you've heard that line probably a thousand times.

  245. But to a Jewish listener, those words would explode like fireworks.

  246. The covenants were important to them.

  247. They knew exactly what a covenant was.

  248. It was a part of their everyday life.

  249. It was a part of their existence, their identity.

  250. A covenant was more than a contract.

  251. It was more than a handshake.

  252. It was a binding, blood-sealed promise.

  253. They lived by covenants.

  254. The kind that could not be broken without blood being shed.

  255. So from the very beginning, God has been a covenant-making God.

  256. I wrote down some of the covenants.

  257. And these are by no means all.

  258. But some of the covenants in Genesis 12,

  259. God promised Abraham, through your offspring,

  260. all nations on the earth will be blessed.

  261. In Exodus chapter 24,

    Exodus 24 chapter mention

  262. God made a covenant with Israel on Mount Sinai.

  263. And Moses sprinkled the blood of bulls on the altar and the people,

  264. sealing this covenant that God made.

  265. In 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  266. God promised David that one of his descendants would reign forever.

  267. Remember, in Jeremiah 31,

  268. centuries before Jesus,

  269. God promised a new covenant would come.

  270. One that would forgive sin once and for all.

  271. And one that would write God's law on our hearts,

  272. not on tablets of stone.

  273. Every covenant was God saying,

  274. I will be faithful to my people.

  275. But every covenant was sealed with blood.

  276. Have you ever heard the saying,

  277. blood is thicker than water?

  278. Anybody ever heard that?

  279. Blood is thicker than water.

  280. Just real quick, what do you think it means?

  281. Somebody yell it out.

  282. Deep insight, Wade.

  283. What are they trying to say?

  284. Blood is thicker than water.

  285. The bond of blood is stronger than the bond of water.

  286. Okay.

  287. What's the context they usually use it in?

  288. Family.

  289. Family.

  290. There it is.

  291. Family, right?

  292. Well, blood is thicker than water.

  293. All right.

  294. Let's actually figure out what that meant.

  295. Back in the 1100s,

  296. a German poet named,

  297. here we go.

  298. We got some people with German roots in this.

  299. Are y'all going to correct me so badly?

  300. Heinrich der Glitcheser.

  301. I don't know how to read that face.

  302. I got the Shoffners over here looking at me like,

  303. I don't know about that.

  304. Gabe, that was the best I could do.

  305. All right.

  306. Heinrich der Glitcheser wrote that

  307. the blood of the covenant

  308. is thicker than the water of the womb.

  309. Think about that.

  310. The blood of the covenant

  311. is thicker than the water of the womb.

  312. That's where that saying came from.

  313. The idea

  314. was not that family

  315. is thicker than any other bond.

  316. The idea was that the bonds

  317. of covenant friendship

  318. or kinship,

  319. the kind made by choice,

  320. are stronger

  321. than those naturally existing

  322. because of family relationships.

  323. You ever heard somebody say

  324. you can't choose your family?

  325. And look,

  326. I'm not ragging on families here,

  327. but I'm saying it's interesting

  328. because we have actually taken this saying

  329. to express the opposite

  330. of what the author of this saying actually meant.

  331. He was writing about brothers in arms

  332. going out to fight

  333. and he said,

  334. the bond,

  335. the blood

  336. of kinship,

  337. the blood of the covenant

  338. made between soldiers

  339. or those who have become like brothers

  340. is actually stronger

  341. than that bond that exists

  342. just from being related.

  343. Covenants

  344. have always been seen

  345. as the ultimate bond

  346. and blood

  347. is usually the price

  348. of these promises.

  349. On the night before Jesus died,

  350. Jesus took the cup

  351. and he said,

  352. this is it.

  353. This is the covenant

  354. that Jeremiah was talking about.

  355. This is the promise

  356. to Abraham fulfilled.

  357. This is the plan

  358. from the Garden of Eden

  359. now come to pass

  360. in me.

  361. Go to Hebrews chapter 8,

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  362. would you?

  363. Hebrews chapter 8.

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  364. We're going to be there

  365. for just a few more minutes

  366. before we stop

  367. to take the elements

  368. of the Lord's Supper.

  369. We're going to be in Hebrews chapter 8.

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  370. and then going into chapter 9.

  371. You can follow along

  372. in your Bible as I read.

  373. Hebrews 8,

  374. beginning in verse 6.

  375. But now Jesus,

  376. our high priest,

  377. has been given a ministry

  378. that is far superior

  379. to the old priesthood.

  380. The priests were the ones

  381. who had to go

  382. and make the sacrifices.

  383. They had to be the representatives

  384. of the people

  385. before God

  386. to say,

  387. we're killing this animal

  388. to make up for the sin

  389. that we've done.

  390. It could never

  391. take away the sin.

  392. It was just a placeholder

  393. for the one

  394. who would come

  395. to actually pay

  396. and atone

  397. for the sin.

  398. So he said,

  399. Jesus

  400. is far superior

  401. to the old priests.

  402. He is the one

  403. who mediates for us

  404. a far better covenant

  405. with God

  406. based on better promises.

  407. All those covenants

  408. from God,

  409. the Israelite people

  410. would hold on to those

  411. like a lifeline.

  412. Say,

  413. this is what we have

  414. from God.

  415. This is the promise.

  416. And Jesus is saying,

  417. I'm coming

  418. with better promises.

  419. I'm coming

  420. with a new

  421. and better covenant.

  422. And it's not just

  423. for the Israelite people.

  424. It's for anyone

  425. who will come

  426. to God

  427. based on better promises.

  428. Back in Hebrews 8,

  429. if the first covenant

  430. had been faultless,

  431. there would have been

  432. no need

  433. for a second covenant

  434. to replace it.

  435. But it wasn't faultless,

  436. was it?

  437. It had faults.

  438. When God speaks

  439. of a new covenant,

  440. it means he has made

  441. the first one obsolete.

  442. It is now out of date

  443. and will soon disappear.

  444. Kind of like technology.

  445. Soon as you buy

  446. a new phone,

  447. it feels like

  448. it's out of date,

  449. obsolete,

  450. and will soon disappear

  451. and be replaced

  452. by the newest,

  453. latest,

  454. and greatest version.

  455. I'm going to have

  456. to probably buy

  457. a phone this year

  458. because my old one

  459. is starting to feel

  460. very obsolete

  461. and out of date.

  462. It's what they do to you.

  463. I've held on

  464. as long as I can.

  465. So God is replacing

  466. the old covenant.

  467. He said,

  468. this is now out of date.

  469. It's obsolete.

  470. I'm going to do away

  471. with it.

  472. I'm going to give you

  473. a new one

  474. that's far better,

  475. but I'm not going

  476. to charge you

  477. hundreds of dollars

  478. for it.

  479. You're not going

  480. to have to get

  481. a subscription plan.

  482. It is a once for all.

  483. It's a free gift.

  484. Then get into chapter 9,

  485. Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9:1

  486. verse 1.

  487. That first covenant

  488. between God

  489. and Israel

  490. had regulations

  491. for worship

  492. and a place of worship

  493. here on earth.

  494. This is an illustration,

  495. skipped out,

  496. pointing to the present time,

  497. verse 9.

  498. For the gifts

  499. and sacrifices

  500. that the priests offer

  501. are not able

  502. to cleanse

  503. the consciences

  504. of the people

  505. who bring them.

  506. They couldn't do you

  507. any real good.

  508. The old system,

  509. sinning,

  510. having the priests

  511. go and confess

  512. your sin

  513. and kill an animal

  514. as a sacrifice,

  515. none of that

  516. could really do

  517. anything good

  518. for you.

  519. It was just a symbol

  520. of what Jesus

  521. was going to do.

  522. That old system

  523. deals with only

  524. food and drink

  525. and various

  526. cleansing ceremonies,

  527. physical regulations

  528. that were in effect

  529. only until a better

  530. system could be

  531. established.

  532. So Christ

  533. has now

  534. become the high priest

  535. over all good things

  536. that have come.

  537. He has entered

  538. that greater,

  539. more perfect

  540. tabernacle

  541. in heaven

  542. which was not

  543. made by human hands

  544. because anything

  545. made by human hands

  546. is not perfect.

  547. Y'all know that,

  548. right?

  549. Anything you've made,

  550. you might be very proud

  551. of it,

  552. but it's not perfect.

  553. It could always be

  554. improved.

  555. But in heaven,

  556. it truly is perfect.

  557. It's not part

  558. of this created world.

  559. With his own blood,

  560. what did Jesus do?

  561. Not the blood of goats

  562. and calves.

  563. His own blood.

  564. He entered

  565. the most holy place.

  566. And without taking

  567. a lot of time

  568. to get into

  569. all the rules

  570. and regulations

  571. of the temple

  572. back then,

  573. when that priest

  574. would go in

  575. to atone

  576. for the sin

  577. of his people,

  578. only he could

  579. enter into

  580. this most holy place.

  581. They called it

  582. the holy of holies.

  583. Behind all these curtains

  584. and there was this

  585. one big thick curtain

  586. that was sewn

  587. so thick

  588. no one could even

  589. cut it.

  590. It was so long

  591. and so thick

  592. and so heavy.

  593. And when Jesus died,

  594. when he gave up

  595. the ghost,

  596. his spirit left him

  597. on the cross.

  598. That temple,

  599. God tore it

  600. from top to bottom.

  601. That covering.

  602. What am I trying

  603. to say?

  604. That curtain.

  605. There we go.

  606. Thank you.

  607. That curtain,

  608. God tore it

  609. from top to bottom

  610. because the holy

  611. of holies,

  612. that most holy place

  613. was now obsolete.

  614. It held no special

  615. significance anymore

  616. because that system

  617. was now gone.

  618. No more sacrifices.

  619. No more priests

  620. going in on our behalf.

  621. That's why you don't

  622. need to come

  623. and sit in a confessional

  624. booth and tell me

  625. the wrong things

  626. you've done.

  627. I don't want to hear it.

  628. Trust me.

  629. And I don't want

  630. to tell you mine.

  631. We tell it to Jesus.

  632. You ever heard that song?

  633. Tell it to Jesus.

  634. Tell it to Jesus.

  635. There's no other

  636. such a friend

  637. or brother.

  638. Tell it to Jesus

  639. alone

  640. because God made

  641. the old way

  642. obsolete.

  643. Now,

  644. man-made religions

  645. will still try

  646. to hold on

  647. to things.

  648. And they'll try

  649. to hold on

  650. to certain traditions

  651. and say,

  652. no,

  653. this is how

  654. we got to do it

  655. because look back,

  656. it's been done

  657. for thousands of years.

  658. Yeah,

  659. until Jesus came.

  660. And now Jesus

  661. gave us a new way.

  662. The temple

  663. made with hands

  664. no longer

  665. has any significance.

  666. Now,

  667. it's the temple

  668. made in heaven

  669. waiting for you

  670. and I

  671. to get there.

  672. and the

  673. New Testament

  674. actually teaches us

  675. that our bodies

  676. are now

  677. like the temple

  678. of God.

  679. Kind of gives us

  680. some pause

  681. when we

  682. go eat Tex-Mex

  683. or whatever.

  684. How well

  685. are we treating

  686. this temple

  687. right now,

  688. right?

  689. But individually,

  690. we are the temples

  691. of God

  692. walking around

  693. because we are now

  694. the holy place.

  695. He has made us

  696. holy.

  697. We didn't make

  698. ourselves holy.

  699. When we repent

  700. of our sins

  701. and turn to Jesus,

  702. He has made us

  703. holy.

  704. So let's get back

  705. into Hebrews 9.

  706. He has entered

  707. that greater,

  708. more perfect

  709. tabernacle in heaven

  710. which was not

  711. made by human hands.

  712. It's not part

  713. of this created world.

  714. With His blood,

  715. He entered

  716. the most holy place

  717. once for all time

  718. and secured

  719. our redemption.

  720. There's that word again,

  721. that transactional word

  722. that means buy back.

  723. He secured

  724. our redemption

  725. forever.

  726. Under the old system,

  727. the blood of goats

  728. and bulls

  729. and the ashes

  730. of a heifer

  731. could cleanse

  732. people's bodies

  733. from ceremonial impurity.

  734. It was never real.

  735. It was always ceremonial.

  736. It did nothing

  737. with the heart.

  738. It was just the bodies.

  739. Just think

  740. how much more.

  741. The writer of Hebrews

  742. says,

  743. the blood of Christ

  744. will purify

  745. our conscience

  746. from sinful deeds

  747. so that we can

  748. worship

  749. the living God.

  750. God can make you

  751. clean

  752. on the

  753. inside.

  754. Those sacrifices

  755. could never do that.

  756. And nothing

  757. you can do

  758. can clean

  759. your inside.

  760. You can take

  761. all the showers.

  762. You can use

  763. all the products.

  764. you can try

  765. to get your mind

  766. into a better

  767. state.

  768. Try to forget

  769. the wrongs you've done.

  770. Try to move on.

  771. Try to leave the past

  772. in the past.

  773. You can do all that

  774. but you cannot

  775. make your

  776. inner self

  777. clean.

  778. You can't

  779. clean your heart.

  780. You can't

  781. clean your soul.

  782. You can't

  783. clean your memory.

  784. only God

  785. can really

  786. cleanse

  787. the real

  788. you.

  789. You can

  790. clean your

  791. shell

  792. but not

  793. you.

  794. Just think

  795. how much

  796. more

  797. the blood

  798. of Christ

  799. can and

  800. will

  801. purify

  802. our

  803. consciences

  804. from sinful

  805. deeds

  806. so then we

  807. can really

  808. worship.

  809. For by the

  810. power of the

  811. eternal spirit

  812. Christ

  813. offered himself

  814. to God

  815. as a perfect

  816. sacrifice

  817. for our sins.

  818. That is why

  819. he is the one

  820. who mediates

  821. a new covenant

  822. between God

  823. and people

  824. so that all

  825. who are called

  826. can receive

  827. the eternal

  828. inheritance

  829. that God

  830. has promised

  831. us.

  832. Told you there

  833. was better

  834. promises coming.

  835. The eternal

  836. inheritance

  837. that will last

  838. forever

  839. because of

  840. Jesus and

  841. what he did.

  842. For Christ

  843. died to set

  844. them free

  845. from the penalty

  846. of the sins

  847. they had committed

  848. under that

  849. first covenant.

  850. So let's look

  851. at these old

  852. and new covenants.

  853. The old

  854. covenant

  855. the first

  856. covenant

  857. was the

  858. righteousness

  859. of the law

  860. and do you

  861. know what

  862. it accomplished?

  863. Condemnation.

  864. It condemned

  865. you over

  866. and over

  867. again and

  868. if you still

  869. live by the

  870. law open

  871. up the

  872. old testament

  873. read the

  874. law you

  875. and I

  876. break it

  877. all the

  878. time.

  879. We break

  880. the law

  881. continually.

  882. So the

  883. old covenant

  884. was there

  885. to show us

  886. just how

  887. bad we

  888. really are.

  889. Here's

  890. God's

  891. standard you

  892. can't reach

  893. it.

  894. You can't

  895. meet it.

  896. You might

  897. feel good

  898. about yourself

  899. because you

  900. feel like

  901. you're meeting

  902. it better

  903. than that

  904. guy is

  905. or better

  906. than that

  907. girl is

  908. but the

  909. truth is

  910. none of us

  911. are meeting

  912. God's

  913. standard.

  914. We continually

  915. break the

  916. law.

  917. So the

  918. new covenant

  919. came.

  920. Jesus brought

  921. the second

  922. covenant

  923. which is the

  924. righteousness

  925. of Christ

  926. and that

  927. brings us

  928. reconciliation.

  929. We can be

  930. reconciled.

  931. things made

  932. right only

  933. by Jesus.

  934. The old

  935. covenant

  936. showed us

  937. how far

  938. apart God

  939. and us

  940. are.

  941. The new

  942. covenant

  943. shows us

  944. how that

  945. distance

  946. can be

  947. overcome,

  948. can be

  949. brought

  950. together

  951. because of

  952. what Jesus

  953. did.

  954. So the

  955. old covenant

  956. was concerned

  957. with a clean

  958. outside,

  959. clean hands,

  960. clean rituals,

  961. clean appearances,

  962. clean habits.

  963. The new

  964. covenant is

  965. the righteousness

  966. of Christ

  967. concerned with

  968. a clean

  969. inside,

  970. a forgiven

  971. heart,

  972. a transformed

  973. spirit,

  974. a life made

  975. new from

  976. the inside

  977. out.

  978. The cross

  979. was not

  980. God changing

  981. his plan,

  982. it was God

  983. completing

  984. his plan.

  985. This was

  986. always the

  987. plan.

  988. He didn't

  989. see how

  990. badly we were

  991. keeping the

  992. law and say

  993. okay I gotta

  994. pivot and I gotta

  995. figure something

  996. else out here.

  997. Jesus why don't

  998. you go and

  999. make all this

  1000. right?

  1001. It was the

  1002. plan from the

  1003. beginning to

  1004. show us how

  1005. we needed

  1006. him.

  1007. You can't get

  1008. somebody saved

  1009. until they

  1010. realize they're

  1011. lost.

  1012. You and I

  1013. could not turn

  1014. to Jesus until

  1015. we realized we

  1016. needed to be

  1017. forgiven.

  1018. Until we

  1019. realized we're

  1020. not good enough,

  1021. we're not strong

  1022. enough, we need

  1023. him.

  1024. the blood of

  1025. bulls and

  1026. goats could

  1027. only cover

  1028. sin but the

  1029. blood of

  1030. Jesus can

  1031. cancel it.

  1032. And it

  1033. has.

  1034. He's canceled

  1035. mine.

  1036. He's canceled

  1037. many of

  1038. yours.

  1039. And if you're

  1040. here today and

  1041. you don't have

  1042. that kind of

  1043. relationship with

  1044. Jesus, please

  1045. don't walk out of

  1046. here today without

  1047. starting it.

  1048. God, this is

  1049. the moment, this

  1050. is the day of

  1051. salvation for

  1052. you.

  1053. Now is the

  1054. time for you to

  1055. turn from sin and

  1056. say, I turn to

  1057. Jesus.

  1058. God help me.

  1059. I can't do it on

  1060. my own.

  1061. Colossians chapter

  1062. two and verse

  1063. 13 talks about

  1064. that.

  1065. When you were

  1066. dead in your

  1067. sins and the

  1068. uncircumcision of

  1069. your flesh, God

  1070. made you alive with

  1071. Christ.

  1072. We're not going to

  1073. get into the whole

  1074. circumcision part.

1075. That was part of the

  1076. rituals to make you

  1077. clean.

  1078. But it was a

  1079. practice that of

  1080. course now is

  1081. practiced today with

  1082. babies born in the

  1083. hospital.

  1084. But when you were

1085. dead in your sin and

  1086. all these rituals that

  1087. you couldn't keep up

  1088. with, God made you

  1089. alive with Christ.

1090. He forgave us all of

  1091. our sins having

  1092. canceled the charge of

  1093. our legal indebtedness

  1094. which stood against

  1095. us.

  1096. It condemned us.

  1097. The law always

  1098. condemns you.

  1099. But then he's taken

1100. it away and he nailed

  1101. it to his cross.

  1102. What an awesome

  1103. picture of

  1104. how Jesus treated

  1105. this.

  1106. How he bought us

  1107. our salvation.

1108. What he has to do

  1109. with the law now.

1110. He said I take it and

1111. I mail it to the

  1112. cross.

1113. This is now where it

  1114. hangs.

1115. It has no rule over

  1116. you anymore.

1117. Now I'm to be the

  1118. sole ruler over you

1119. and I want that to be

  1120. a relationship.

  1121. That's the difference

  1122. the cross makes.

  1123. every drop of blood

1124. that fell at the cross

  1125. of Jesus is God

  1126. saying I keep my

  1127. promises even to the

  1128. death.

  1129. Every drop of blood

  1130. is God's promise to

  1131. you.

1132. I paid for your sin.

  1133. So in conclusion

  1134. that's what this

  1135. moment is about.

  1136. It's a price that

  1137. was paid

  1138. and it's a promise

  1139. that was kept.

  1140. So when we hold

  1141. the bread this morning

1142. and we hold the cup

  1143. don't let it become

  1144. a routine.

1145. Or if it has become

  1146. a routine for you

  1147. repent of that

  1148. and say no

  1149. I'm going to think

  1150. about this

  1151. how God wants me

  1152. to think about it.

  1153. We're doing it for

  1154. him.

  1155. And so it's a

  1156. reminder.

  1157. This is what it

  1158. costs.

  1159. It's a testimony.

  1160. This is what he

  1161. promised.

  1162. And it's an anchor.

  1163. This is how much

  1164. we are loved.

  1165. I'm going to ask

  1166. the men to come

  1167. forward.

  1168. We have some of

  1169. our deacons

  1170. to serve us

  1171. with the Lord's

  1172. supper this morning.

  1173. As they come

  1174. forward

  1175. I want to remind

  1176. you that this

  1177. moment is not

  1178. about what we

  1179. bring to God.

  1180. It's about what

  1181. he brought to

  1182. us.

  1183. A promise kept.

  1184. A price paid.

  1185. So would you

  1186. keep that in your

  1187. mind as we bow

  1188. together in just a

  1189. moment and we

  1190. receive these

  1191. elements.

  1192. And let me give

  1193. a little bit of

  1194. instruction here.

  1195. For those of you

  1196. who are guests

  1197. with us this

  1198. morning.

  1199. If you know in

  1200. your heart that

  1201. you're a child of

  1202. God and there's

  1203. been a moment of

  1204. salvation for you

  1205. when you turn to

  1206. Jesus said please

  1207. forgive me of my

  1208. sin.

  1209. Make me your

  1210. child.

  1211. Then we invite you

  1212. to join us with

  1213. this time of

  1214. communion Lord's

  1215. supper.

  1216. You'll receive the

  1217. elements together.

  1218. Would you wait and

1219. hold on to those and

1220. be in an attitude of

  1221. prayer until the

1222. time comes for us to

  1223. all take them

  1224. together.

  1225. We'll do that

  1226. twice.

  1227. We'll have a prayer

  1228. before each one.

  1229. But what this is

  1230. about is a

  1231. reminder of the

  1232. price that was

  1233. paid.

  1234. So we look at

  1235. that bread and we

  1236. think of Jesus'

  1237. body and the

  1238. suffering that he

  1239. endured as our

  1240. sacrifice.

  1241. We look at that

  1242. cup and we think

  1243. of the blood that

  1244. is the new covenant

1245. that we get to be a

  1246. part of.

  1247. not just with the

  1248. people of Israel

1249. with all of us who

  1250. will accept the

  1251. invitation that God

  1252. extends.

  1253. So let's keep our

  1254. minds locked in there

  1255. when we have that

  1256. bread and we have

  1257. that juice.

  1258. What do these

  1259. represent?

  1260. Would you bow with

  1261. me in prayer?

  1262. God at this moment

  1263. we ask for our

  1264. hearts to be quieted

  1265. our minds to be

  1266. cleared of all the

  1267. distractions.

  1268. sins.

  1269. That every man,

  1270. woman, and child in

  1271. this room would know

  1272. you as their savior,

  1273. know you as their

  1274. friend, know you as

  1275. their father, know you

  1276. as the forgiver of

  1277. their sins, the

  1278. sacrifice for their

  1279. sins.

  1280. God you didn't just

1281. come to give us a

  1282. better life on this

  1283. earth.

1284. You came as a very

  1285. real, very needed

  1286. sacrifice.

  1287. sacrifice.

  1288. Let us not forget

  1289. that.

1290. Let us in the next

  1291. few moments consider

  1292. that.

  1293. Speak to us.

  1294. Speak to our hearts.

  1295. Change us from the

  1296. inside out.

  1297. It's in Jesus' name

  1298. we pray.

  1299. Amen.

  1300. All right, the deacons

  1301. are going to distribute

  1302. the elements.

  1303. Music's going to play

  1304. in the background.

  1305. And as you receive

  1306. them, just sit quietly

  1307. in prayer and then

  1308. I'll read a scripture

  1309. and we'll pray and

  1310. we'll take the

  1311. elements together.

  1312. And as youiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseiseise
