  1. Anybody ever been to a victory parade? Anybody ever been to a victory parade? Anybody ever been to a victory parade? Anybody ever been to a victory parade? Anybody ever been to a victory parade? Anybody ever remember this one?

  2. ! This was the Dallas Mavericks back in 2011, the last time they won the NBA championship.

  3. Usually a victory parade, for those of you who don't know, is after your team wins the league championship.

  4. And then at the end of the season, they get to come back to their home city.

  5. And they get to throw a big bash, a big parade.

  6. And go through the streets and everybody cheers and claps.

  7. And it's a great time.

  8. Taking pictures.

  9. Usually they're playing, we are the champions, my friend.

  10. I don't know if Queen knew that was going to become the official song of victory parades when he wrote that.

  11. But listen, yeah, 2011, about 200,000 people lined the streets of downtown Dallas, climbing light poles, hanging off of overpasses.

  12. It was great.

  13. Then the Rangers, it was about two years ago when they won the World Series.

  14. Wasn't that great?

  15. We're getting a little more excited about that.

  16. Okay, good.

  17. Packed half a million people along the parade route in Arlington.

  18. It was awesome.

  19. I didn't get to go because I valued my life.

  20. But had a great time and got to watch it online.

  21. And then for the Dallas Cowboys.

  22. I think I was 11.

  23. It was great.

  24. You should have been there.

  25. Look, I'm mad too, folks.

  26. All right?

  27. Dak's going to get us there, maybe.

  28. All right.

  29. Anyway, that's not what this is about.

  30. But wouldn't it be great if it was?

  31. Wouldn't it be great if life was more like a victory parade?

  32. No matter what happens, a flat tire, somebody cuts you off in traffic, somebody's passive aggressive to you at work,

  33. a cold goes through your house, doesn't matter, man.

  34. Your team won the championship and everything else just doesn't compare.

  35. How great would that be?

  36. Well, let's dive back into Colossians.

  37. Paul's letter to the church at Colossae.

  38. And let's see what in the world victory parades have to do with what he's teaching us in Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  39. This is our series, Christ Over All.

  40. When you take a whole book of the Bible and you reduce it down to the main theme,

  41. this is Christ Over All, our study of Colossians.

  42. Two weeks ago, we learned that in him, Jesus Christ,

  43. all things hold together in this grand cosmos, this ordered universe in which we live.

  44. Jesus is holding it all together and he holds us together.

  45. And then last Sunday, we looked at the end of Colossians 1.

  46. We saw that once we were alienated and now we are reconciled.

  47. God has brought us into the family as his children

  48. when once we were considered his enemies because of our sin.

  49. So, this Sunday, we're going to look at Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  50. Colossians 2 verses 1 through 3.

    Colossians 2:1–3

  51. Let's go ahead and read.

  52. For I want you to know how greatly I'm struggling for you,

  53. for those in Laodicea,

  54. for all who have not seen me in person.

  55. I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love

  56. so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding.

  57. Wouldn't it be great to have complete understanding of God?

  58. Someday we'll have it.

  59. Right now, we get bits and pieces as his spirit reveals them to us through his word.

  60. But that we would have complete understanding

  61. and have the knowledge of God's mystery.

  62. What is that mystery?

  63. Christ.

  64. Jesus Christ.

  65. He is the mystery that we're beginning to have revealed to us.

  66. In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

  67. So, before we pick it up in verse 4 here,

  68. I wanted to get through these three verses because Paul sets it up here.

  69. And he says,

  70. If you understand who Christ is,

  71. if you understand who Jesus is,

  72. and who you are in him,

  73. then you'll never settle for religion again.

  74. And that's what the theme is today.

  75. Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  76. Christ over religion.

  77. Let's pray together.

  78. God, I pray that you would open up our minds to the teaching of your word today.

  79. That through this letter from Paul to this church in Colossae so many years ago,

  80. that this church in Henrietta

  81. would by your spirit have our eyes open to see that you are so much bigger

  82. than what we call religion.

  83. That you would free us from its shackles.

  84. Show us the freedom we have in you.

  85. In Jesus' name we pray.

  86. Amen.

  87. Alright, so we're picking it up in verse 4 now.

  88. I am saying this, Paul says,

  89. so that no one will deceive you

  90. with arguments that sound reasonable.

  91. Has anyone,

  92. if you're not ashamed to lift your hand,

  93. is anyone willing to admit

  94. that you've been deceived by arguments that sounded reasonable?

  95. And then later you found out they weren't.

  96. Yep, me too.

  97. I got both hands up.

  98. There have been times in my life

  99. when I was deceived by something that sounded really reasonable.

  100. Yeah, that makes sense.

  101. And then later I found out it was a bunch of crock.

  102. It was absolutely false.

  103. So, he says,

  104. I don't want this to happen to you.

  105. So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord,

  106. continue to live in him.

  107. Being rooted.

  108. Make note of that word.

  109. Rooted.

  110. And built up.

  111. So did you get the contrast there?

  112. We're going down deeper in our roots.

  113. And we're going up,

  114. built up in him

  115. and established in the faith.

  116. This is how you are established in the faith.

  117. By digging your roots deep in Christ

  118. and then letting him build this building on top of those roots.

  119. Just as you were taught

  120. and overflowing with gratitude.

  121. So Paul's saying,

  122. don't fall for reasonable sounding religion.

  123. Instead,

  124. choose Christ.

  125. Don't settle for religion.

  126. Save that for Jesus.

  127. What are we talking about?

  128. A reasonable sounding religion.

  129. The kind that says,

  130. if you just try harder,

  131. do more,

  132. follow all the rules that we've given you,

  133. by the way,

  134. then God will love you more.

  135. God will value you more.

  136. God will choose you

  137. if you

  138. follow what we say you should do.

  139. But that,

  140. in a nutshell,

  141. described most religions

  142. in the ancient times

  143. and it still describes them today.

  144. So when we say religion,

  145. I want to be very clear about this up front.

  146. When I say religion,

  147. in this sermon today,

  148. I'm talking about

  149. the man-made construct

  150. that often takes the place

  151. of what Jesus

  152. was coming to institute

  153. on this world.

  154. And if you look at Jesus' time

  155. walking around on this earth,

  156. much of it was spent

  157. fighting against religion.

  158. Fascinatingly enough,

  159. most of it was spent

  160. fighting against

  161. the Jewish religion

  162. that God had founded

  163. and then man

  164. had co-opted.

  165. Man had

  166. hijacked.

  167. Jesus was coming

  168. to turn the page

  169. and do away

  170. with what they had done.

  171. So,

  172. if you just

  173. try harder,

  174. if you do

  175. what we tell you,

  176. then you can have victory.

  177. then you can have

  178. what you're striving for.

  179. But there's a truth here

  180. that Paul is teaching

  181. all through

  182. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  183. that runs

  184. totally counteracted

  185. to that.

  186. And it's this truth

  187. that we don't fight

  188. for victory.

  189. We fight

  190. from

  191. victory.

  192. We're going to dive

  193. into that a little bit more

  194. and flesh it out.

  195. But I want to lay that out there

  196. as where we're trying

  197. to get to.

  198. This is the point

  199. we're trying to arrive at

  200. today, okay?

  201. We don't fight

  202. for a victory.

  203. We fight already

  204. from the place

  205. of victory.

  206. So,

  207. as we discover

  208. that today,

  209. let's look at

  210. number one.

  211. From rules

  212. to roots.

  213. We're going to look

  214. at what Paul

  215. just taught us

  216. in verse 7

  217. being rooted

  218. and built up

  219. in Jesus.

  220. So,

  221. we're shifting

  222. from the rules

  223. of religion

  224. to our roots

  225. in Christ.

  226. What do we mean

  227. by roots?

  228. How are we rooted

  229. in Christ?

  230. Well,

  231. don't you just love

  232. roses?

  233. Aren't they beautiful?

  234. Lovely,

  235. aren't they?

  236. Wives,

  237. would you accept that

  238. as an anniversary gift?

  239. It's roses, man.

  240. It's the roots

  241. of roses.

  242. roses.

  243. How many of y'all

  244. like apples?

  245. Aren't they tasty

  246. and delicious?

  247. Don't you just want

  248. one right now

  249. looking at that picture?

  250. That's an apple tree,

  251. folks.

  252. It's the roots.

  253. One of my favorite

  254. things in all the world

  255. is a nice,

  256. crisp,

  257. juicy,

  258. green grape.

  259. Don't they look appetizing?

  260. It's the roots.

  261. roots.

  262. But I can promise you

  263. that roses,

  264. apples,

  265. and grapes

  266. would not exist

  267. without these three things.

  268. These things

  269. cause the fruit

  270. to appear

  271. that we then enjoy.

  272. But the roots

  273. are the most important part.

  274. Without the roots

  275. digging deep

  276. into good soil,

  277. we don't get to enjoy

  278. the roses

  279. or the apples

  280. or the grapes

  281. or you substitute

  282. whatever you'd like to.

  283. You don't grow

  284. by pretty fruit.

  285. You don't grow

  286. by making your fruit

  287. prettier.

  288. How do you grow?

  289. By making

  290. your roots

  291. deeper.

  292. You grow

  293. by getting

  294. your roots

  295. deeper.

  296. That is what

  297. produces fruit.

  298. That is what

  299. produces something

  300. that you would enjoy.

  301. Something of value.

  302. So just like

  303. a plant

  304. or a vegetable

  305. or a fruit

  306. that we enjoy,

  307. it comes

  308. from the roots.

  309. So,

  310. the fruits

  311. only exist

  312. because of the roots.

  313. Jeremiah 17

  314. produces a principle

  315. here.

  316. The more

  317. we're rooted

  318. in Christ,

  319. the stronger

  320. we will be.

  321. The more

  322. we're rooted

  323. in Christ,

  324. the stronger

  325. we will be.

  326. The person

  327. who trusts

  328. in the Lord,

  329. whose confidence

  330. indeed

  331. is in the Lord,

  332. is blessed.

  333. Anybody ever

  334. seen somebody

  335. on social media

  336. put in

  337. hashtag blessed?

  338. Usually when they

  339. get a new car

  340. or a new house

  341. or something great

  342. happens to them,

  343. hashtag blessed.

  344. It's great.

  345. Kind of seems

  346. a little shallow.

  347. I don't know,

  348. like they don't

  349. maybe understand

  350. exactly what

  351. the blessings

  352. of God are

  353. because they

  354. don't always

  355. manifest themselves

  356. in something

  357. of monetary value.

  358. Something that

  359. would be

  360. only for the

  361. wealthy

  362. or only for

  363. those in

  364. the financial

  365. place to be

  366. able to do it.

  367. That's not

  368. always how

  369. God's blessings

  370. manifest themselves

  371. in our lives.

  372. Sometimes they're

  373. in joy

  374. in the midst

  375. of a storm.

  376. Sometimes they're

  377. in peace

  378. when everyone

  379. around you

  380. is losing

  381. their minds.

  382. Often that is

  383. how God's blessings

  384. manifest themselves.

  385. And so it says

  386. when you trust

  387. in God

  388. and your confidence

  389. is in Him,

  390. you will experience

  391. God's blessings.

  392. You will be

  393. like a tree

  394. planted by

  395. the water.

  396. Notice that

  397. word water.

  398. And then in

  399. verse 8 it says

  400. it sends its

  401. roots out

  402. toward a stream.

  403. There it is

  404. again.

  405. The water,

  406. the stream.

  407. It doesn't fear

  408. when the heat

  409. comes.

  410. Why?

  411. Because it's

  412. near the water.

  413. Its foliage,

  414. its leaves

  415. remain green.

  416. This is what

  417. a life looks

  418. like when its

  419. roots are deep

  420. in Christ.

  421. Because who's

  422. the water?

  423. Who's the stream?

  424. It's Jesus.

  425. It's God's

  426. spirit.

  427. That's where

  428. we draw our

  429. strength.

  430. So when the

  431. heat comes

  432. and it threatens

  433. to dry you up

  434. and those around

  435. you are getting

  436. dried up,

  437. you remain

  438. productive

  439. because your

  440. roots are deep

  441. and moving

  442. toward the

  443. water.

  444. Moving toward

  445. the stream.

  446. So this is

  447. what Paul's

  448. encouraging this

  449. church to do.

  450. Move your

  451. roots toward

  452. Christ.

  453. let them

  454. grow deeper

  455. down.

  456. I can promise

  457. you there are

  458. so many people

  459. who come to

  460. church on

  461. Sundays

  462. and they live

  463. relatively upright

  464. lives in society

  465. and they say

  466. they're Christians

  467. but when the

  468. storm comes

  469. their house is

  470. built on sand.

  471. when the heat

  472. comes

  473. their roots

  474. are not

  475. deep.

  476. They're not

  477. digging toward

  478. the water

  479. of Jesus

  480. and they dry

  481. up.

  482. Their house

  483. falls.

  484. They can't

  485. last

  486. because it

  487. wasn't real.

  488. It wasn't

  489. faith.

  490. it was

  491. something else.

  492. So Paul's

  493. saying don't

  494. be like

  495. that.

  496. Dig your

  497. roots down

  498. deep.

  499. Continue to

  500. live in

  501. Christ Jesus

  502. being rooted

  503. and built up

  504. in him and

  505. established in

  506. the faith.

  507. So from

  508. rules to

  509. roots.

  510. Before we go

  511. on to number

  512. two I want

  513. to make this

  514. last point.

  515. Religion is

  516. all about

  517. rules.

  518. Jesus is

  519. all about

  520. roots.

  521. You say

  522. what makes

  523. our church

  524. the Baptist

  525. church

  526. different from

  527. the Methodist

  528. church or

  529. the Christian

  530. church or

  531. the church

  532. of Christ

  533. or the

  534. Catholic

  535. church or

  536. whatever else.

  537. When you

  538. nail it down

  539. it comes down

  540. to whatever

  541. rules that

  542. we have

  543. decided to

  544. believe

  545. or teach.

  546. The sign

  547. on the

  548. church

  549. usually

  550. distinguishes

  551. that church's

  552. set of

  553. rules from

  554. a different

  555. one.

  556. But that's

  557. not what

  558. it's about.

  559. And I'm

  560. not telling

  561. you that

  562. there's no

  563. difference between

  564. the churches

  565. sometimes there

  566. are.

  567. But the

  568. real difference

  569. between whether

  570. a church is

  571. right or

  572. wrong.

  573. You ready

  574. for this?

  575. It's going

  576. to be a

  577. controversial

  578. statement.

  579. You can put

  580. it out on

  581. Facebook and

  582. say that

  583. preacher's

  584. lost his

  585. mind if

  586. he ever

  587. had it in

  588. the first

  589. place.

  590. Here we

  591. go.

  592. The

  593. difference

  594. and how

  595. you decide

  596. whether a

  597. church is

  598. right or

  599. wrong is

  600. whether Jesus

  601. is more

  602. important than

  603. the rules.

  604. Whether its

  605. roots go

  606. deeper than

  607. the rules

  608. that they've

  609. decided on.

  610. That's the

  611. difference on

  612. whether a

  613. church is

  614. right or

  615. wrong.

  616. So we're

  617. not going

  618. to pick on

  619. a particular

  620. denomination

  621. or say this

  622. one, there's

  623. no way that

  624. that's the

  625. case.

  626. You have to

  627. let the

  628. Holy Spirit

  629. guide you

  630. in that.

  631. But there

  632. are many

  633. that it's

  634. pretty obvious

  635. from the

  636. outside looking

  637. in that

  638. their rules

  639. are more

  640. important than

  641. Jesus himself.

  642. And I

  643. pray, literally

  644. every day, I

  645. pray that our

  646. church would not

  647. be one of

  648. those.

  649. That we

  650. would not be

  651. one that

  652. says our

  653. rules that we

  654. decided on,

  655. because I can

  656. promise you

  657. this, you

  658. take a passage

  659. of scripture

  660. and you get

  661. ten different

  662. people in the

  663. room and they

  664. can all read

  665. it and they

  666. can come away

  667. with ten

  668. different opinions

  669. on what it

  670. means.

  671. The Bible

  672. is like

  673. that.

  674. Why?

  675. Because the

  676. Holy Spirit

  677. of God is

  678. supposed to

  679. guide each

  680. of us

  681. individually.

  682. So we

  683. can come away

  684. with ten

  685. different opinions

  686. and ten

  687. different set

  688. of rules based

  689. on what we

  690. think the

  691. Bible teaches

  692. in this

  693. passage.

  694. So who's

  695. right?

  696. Which one

  697. of the ten

  698. is right?

  699. That's where

  700. God's Spirit

  701. has to guide

  702. you.

  703. and you

  704. have to

  705. hold some

  706. of those

  707. rules loosely

  708. and say

  709. my roots

  710. are going

  711. to go deep

  712. in Jesus

  713. and that's

  714. going to

  715. guide me

  716. more than

  717. my interpretation

  718. of this one

  719. particular set

  720. and how it

  721. disagrees with

  722. hers or his

  723. or his or

  724. hers.

  725. But that's

  726. not how the

  727. church has

  728. operated.

  729. For centuries

  730. splits have

  731. happened.

  732. Christians have

  733. gotten mad at

  734. each other.

  735. They say I'm

  736. done with this

  737. kind of church

  738. because they

  739. believe these

  740. rules and I

  741. don't believe

  742. this is what

  743. the Bible

  744. teaches.

  745. So I'm

  746. going to go

  747. over here

  748. and we're

  749. going to

  750. start our

  751. own church.

  752. And that

  753. happens time

  754. and time

  755. and time

  756. and time

  757. again.

  758. Why?

  759. Because the

  760. roots were

  761. not as deep

  762. as their

  763. belief in

  764. their rules.

  765. The truth

  766. is we ought

  767. to be able to

  768. set aside

  769. some of those

  770. things.

  771. Say well in

  772. this church

  773. we do this

  774. kind of music.

  775. In this

  776. church we

  777. believe in

  778. this and

  779. we absolutely

  780. do not

  781. believe in

  782. that.

  783. You say no

  784. you do.

  785. Truth is the

  786. person on the

  787. other side of

  788. the sanctuary

  789. from you may

  790. not believe

  791. that like you

  792. do.

  793. And that's

  794. all right as

  795. long as both

  796. of your roots

  797. are digging

  798. down into

  799. Jesus.

  800. That's what

  801. it's about.

  802. So I'll

  803. get off that

  804. soapbox now

  805. and we can

  806. move on to

  807. number two.

  808. It's about

  809. the roots in

  810. Christ.

  811. It's not about

  812. the rules and

  813. how good you

  814. are or bad

  815. you are at

  816. obeying them.

  817. It's about

  818. how deep your

  819. roots go in

  820. Jesus.

  821. Number two,

  822. religion's about

  823. the flesh.

  824. Jesus is about

  825. fullness.

  826. We're moving

  827. from flesh to

  828. fullness.

  829. Look down in

  830. verse nine.

  831. the entire

  832. fullness of

  833. God's nature

  834. dwells bodily

  835. in Christ

  836. Jesus.

  837. And you

  838. have been

  839. filled by

  840. him who

  841. is the

  842. head over

  843. every ruler

  844. and authority.

  845. You were

  846. also circumcised

  847. in him with

  848. a circumcision

  849. not done with

  850. hands.

  851. Does anybody

  852. need to pause

  853. here and try

  854. to figure out

  855. why Paul's

  856. talking about

  857. circumcision?

  858. Does that

  859. strike any

  860. of you as

  861. odd?

  862. Because that's

  863. something that's

  864. a procedure,

  865. a medical

  866. procedure that

  867. happens to

  868. little baby

  869. boys right

  870. after they're

  871. born.

  872. What is it?

  873. A week or

  874. ten days or

  875. two weeks after

  876. they're born?

  877. Something like

  878. that, right?

  879. You take him

  880. back in, you

  881. get him

  882. circumcised.

  883. Why is Paul

  884. talking about

  885. this?

  886. Because it

  887. was a big

  888. controversy.

  889. Because the

  890. Jews back

  891. then were

  892. pretty much

  893. the only ones

  894. circumcising

  895. their baby

  896. boys.

  897. Now are

  898. you ready

  899. for this?

  900. Men, are

  901. y'all ready

  902. for this?

  903. Back then, if

  904. you were going

  905. to be a

  906. follower of

  907. Jesus, a

  908. lot of those

  909. early churches

  910. were telling

  911. the men that

  912. they had to

  913. get circumcised

  914. if they were

  915. going to come

  916. join their

  917. church.

  918. Like adult

  919. grown men.

  920. I'm sorry,

  921. that's not

  922. pleasant to

  923. think about.

  924. Ow!

  925. Especially with

  926. the relative

  927. lack of

  928. anesthetic

  929. back then.

  930. Tough ask.

  931. Here we just

  932. tell you to

  933. give a bunch

  934. of money and

  935. I'm kidding.

  936. We don't

  937. really put any

  938. obligations on

  939. you, restrictions

  940. on you if you

  941. want to join the

  942. church other

  943. than do you

  944. believe in

  945. Jesus?

  946. Have you been

  947. saved, baptized,

  948. and we welcome

  949. you into our

  950. fellowship as a

  951. follower of

  952. Jesus?

  953. But back

  954. then it was

  955. yeah man, you

  956. got to go under

  957. the knife.

  958. It's not going

  959. to be fun.

  960. Well Paul's

  961. fighting against

  962. that.

  963. He's saying no,

  964. absolutely not.

  965. You are so

  966. focused on the

  967. outward, the

  968. flesh, saying

  969. well they've got

  970. to look like us.

  971. Well first of all,

  972. who would even

  973. know?

  974. You know, I

  975. mean come on

  976. folks.

  977. No, that's

  978. not what it's

  979. about.

  980. It's not about

  981. whether on the

  982. outside physical

  983. appearance you

  984. fit in.

  985. But that's what

  986. these early Jews

  987. who had chosen

  988. to follow Jesus

  989. but they couldn't

  990. get past their

  991. rules.

  992. They couldn't get

  993. past their

  994. regulations.

  995. They couldn't get

  996. past their

  997. traditions.

  998. Say you've got to

  999. do it how we do

  1000. it.

  1001. you've got to

  1002. look like us.

  1003. It's all about

  1004. the flesh.

  1005. God says it's

  1006. about so much

  1007. more than the

  1008. flesh.

  1009. I'm here to

  1010. offer you

  1011. complete fullness

  1012. in me.

  1013. So verse 9

  1014. he says

  1015. the entire

  1016. fullness

  1017. of God's

  1018. nature

  1019. is available

  1020. to you

  1021. through Jesus.

  1022. it's so much

  1023. better

  1024. than your

  1025. religious

  1026. restrictions.

  1027. So

  1028. he says

  1029. this is about

  1030. a circumcision

  1031. that's not

  1032. done with

  1033. hands.

  1034. Putting

  1035. off the

  1036. body of the

  1037. flesh.

  1038. The circumcision

  1039. is done

  1040. in Christ.

  1041. This is how

  1042. we are united.

  1043. This is how

  1044. we are made

  1045. right.

  1046. it's all

  1047. in Jesus

  1048. not through

  1049. any physical

  1050. procedure.

  1051. And then he

  1052. continues

  1053. when you're

  1054. buried with

  1055. him in

  1056. baptism

  1057. which you

  1058. were

  1059. in which

  1060. you were

  1061. also

  1062. raised

  1063. with him

  1064. through

  1065. faith

  1066. in the

  1067. working

  1068. of God

  1069. who

  1070. raised

  1071. him

  1072. from

  1073. the

  1074. dead.

  1075. Paul

  1076. says

  1077. you don't

  1078. need

  1079. external

  1080. religion

  1081. to make

  1082. you

  1083. right

  1084. with

  1085. God

  1086. because

  1087. everything

  1088. that needed

  1089. to be

  1090. done

  1091. has

  1092. already

  1093. been

  1094. done

  1095. by

  1096. Jesus.

  1097. We

  1098. can't

  1099. add

  1100. anything

  1101. to the

  1102. gospel.

  1103. In our

  1104. starting point

  1105. class

  1106. this morning

  1107. we talked

  1108. about the

  1109. gospel.

  1110. We talked

  1111. about the

  1112. good news

  1113. what it

  1114. is

  1115. what it

  1116. isn't.

  1117. And I

  1118. can promise

  1119. you

  1120. circumcision

  1121. had no

  1122. part

  1123. of the

  1124. gospel.

  1125. That was

  1126. never a

  1127. requirement.

  1128. Neither

  1129. was faithful

  1130. church

  1131. attendance

  1132. every

  1133. Sunday.

  1134. Now you

  1135. ought to be

  1136. faithful in

  1137. your church

  1138. attendance

  1139. every Sunday.

  1140. Why?

  1141. Not so you

  1142. can go to

  1143. heaven when

  1144. you die.

  1145. Not so you

  1146. can have a

  1147. good relationship

  1148. between you

  1149. and God.

  1150. The relationship

  1151. is there

  1152. regardless.

  1153. It's

  1154. for your

  1155. own

  1156. benefit

  1157. and the

  1158. benefit

  1159. of the

  1160. body

  1161. of

  1162. Christ.

  1163. It's

  1164. because we

  1165. are good

  1166. for each

  1167. other.

  1168. It's

  1169. because we

  1170. need each

  1171. other.

  1172. And the

  1173. Holy Spirit

  1174. in me

  1175. communes

  1176. with the

  1177. Holy Spirit

  1178. in Bonnie

  1179. Hoff and

  1180. we can

  1181. fellowship

  1182. together

  1183. because we're

  1184. faithful in

  1185. attending the

  1186. gatherings of

  1187. the body

  1188. of Christ.

  1189. When the

  1190. body's

  1191. missing a

  1192. part it's

  1193. not whole.

  1194. But that

  1195. doesn't

  1196. affect our

  1197. standing in

  1198. God's eyes

  1199. whether we

  1200. miss a

  1201. Sunday or

  1202. not.

  1203. But we

  1204. choose to

  1205. gather because

  1206. we love each

  1207. other as

  1208. Jesus first

  1209. loved us.

  1210. That's what

  1211. fullness is.

  1212. That's what

  1213. God's offering

  1214. you.

  1215. Romans chapter

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  1216. 3.

  1217. Romans, I'm

  1218. sorry, chapter

  1219. 8 verse 3.

  1220. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1221. 8 and verse

  1222. 3.

  1223. I don't have

  1224. it on the

  1225. screen.

  1226. It's a little

  1227. bit of a

  1228. passage so if

  1229. you wouldn't

  1230. mind turning

  1231. there real

  1232. quick.

  1233. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1234. 8 and

  1235. verse 3.

  1236. It would

  1237. have been a

  1238. lot of

  1239. flipping through

  1240. slides if I

  1241. put it all

  1242. up there.

  1243. So I just

  1244. thought we

  1245. could look at

  1246. the Bible

  1247. together.

  1248. Look on with

  1249. somebody next

  1250. to you if

  1251. you don't

  1252. have a copy

  1253. but there

  1254. should be a

  1255. copy in

  1256. front of

  1257. you.

  1258. If you

  1259. need to

  1260. look at

  1261. your phone

  1262. or tablet

  1263. that's fine

  1264. too as

  1265. long as

  1266. you're on

  1267. the Bible

  1268. app and

  1269. not checking

  1270. Facebook.

  1271. Alright?

  1272. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1273. chapter 8 and

  1274. verse 3.

  1275. What the

  1276. law could

  1277. not do

  1278. since it

  1279. was weakened

  1280. by the

  1281. flesh,

  1282. God did.

  1283. Remember a

  1284. few Sundays

  1285. ago when we

  1286. looked at

  1287. the law

  1288. and then we

  1289. looked at

  1290. grace.

  1291. These are

  1292. two opposing

  1293. forces.

  1294. God established

  1295. the law to

  1296. show us how

  1297. we couldn't

  1298. keep it and

  1299. to bring us

  1300. to the place

  1301. where we

  1302. needed his

  1303. grace.

  1304. And all of

  1305. us are there.

  1306. We're all in

  1307. the same boat.

  1308. So he says

  1309. what the law

  1310. could not do

  1311. since it was

  1312. weakened by

  1313. the flesh,

  1314. God actually

  1315. did it.

  1316. He condemned

  1317. sin in the

  1318. flesh by sending

  1319. his own who?

  1320. His own son.

  1321. In order

  1322. that the

  1323. law's

  1324. requirement

  1325. would be

  1326. fulfilled in

  1327. us.

  1328. But wait a

  1329. minute, how

  1330. could the

  1331. law's requirement

  1332. be fulfilled

  1333. in us?

  1334. We don't

  1335. walk according

  1336. to the

  1337. flesh but

  1338. according to

  1339. the spirit.

  1340. That's how.

  1341. When Jesus

  1342. forgives your

  1343. sin and makes

  1344. you his

  1345. child, then

  1346. you move from

  1347. under the law

  1348. to under

  1349. grace.

  1350. So now we

  1351. don't walk

  1352. according to

  1353. the law

  1354. anymore.

  1355. Am I doing

  1356. okay today?

  1357. Well, yes,

  1358. because I

  1359. fulfilled the

  1360. law mostly.

  1361. No, that's

  1362. not how we

  1363. judge our

  1364. day anymore.

  1365. It's am I

  1366. walking by the

  1367. spirit today or

  1368. am I walking

  1369. according to my

  1370. own thinking,

  1371. my own

  1372. understanding?

  1373. All right?

  1374. So for those

  1375. who live

  1376. according to

  1377. the flesh,

  1378. in parentheses,

  1379. the law,

  1380. they have their

  1381. minds set on

  1382. the things of

  1383. the flesh.

  1384. But those who

  1385. live according to

  1386. the spirit,

  1387. have their

  1388. minds set on

  1389. things according

  1390. to the spirit.

  1391. So when you

  1392. have your

  1393. mind set on

  1394. the flesh,

  1395. you're thinking,

  1396. am I doing

  1397. all the

  1398. rules right?

  1399. Am I doing

  1400. all the

  1401. circumcision?

  1402. religion?

  1403. All the

  1404. things that

  1405. man-made

  1406. religion has

  1407. placed above a

  1408. relationship with

  1409. God.

  1410. They say as

  1411. long as you're

  1412. doing that,

  1413. long as you're

  1414. not wearing your

  1415. hat in church,

  1416. long as I

  1417. didn't hear a

  1418. cuss word come

  1419. out of your

  1420. mouth.

  1421. For me growing

  1422. up, as long as

  1423. you didn't go to

  1424. the movies.

  1425. Is everything in

  1426. the movie theater

  1427. wrong?

  1428. No, but people

  1429. might think you're

  1430. watching one of the

  1431. bad ones.

  1432. What?

  1433. Do you have a

  1434. TV?

  1435. Isn't that the

  1436. same?

  1437. Anyway, the

  1438. rules can change

  1439. and they do

  1440. depending on the

  1441. church you go to,

  1442. depending on the

  1443. person you hear,

  1444. how they see

  1445. things, how they

  1446. think, the rules

  1447. change.

  1448. That's why it's

  1449. never going to be

  1450. about the rules

  1451. because you can't

  1452. follow everybody's.

  1453. You certainly

  1454. can't follow

  1455. God's.

  1456. It has to be

  1457. about our

  1458. listening and

  1459. being guided by

  1460. the Holy Spirit.

  1461. That's the new

  1462. creation.

  1463. That's the new

  1464. way.

  1465. That's the new

  1466. command that

  1467. Jesus gave to

  1468. us.

  1469. Some of us are

  1470. still stuck in

  1471. the old one.

  1472. That's called

  1473. religion.

  1474. So, the

  1475. mindset of the

  1476. flesh is death.

  1477. Verse 6.

  1478. The mindset of

  1479. the spirit is

  1480. life and peace.

  1481. In case that

  1482. wasn't clear enough

  1483. for you, verse 7,

  1484. the mindset of

  1485. the flesh is

  1486. hostile to God

  1487. because it doesn't

  1488. submit to God's

  1489. law.

  1490. Your flesh will

  1491. never submit to

  1492. God's law.

  1493. It won't.

  1494. You're wired

  1495. differently.

  1496. You're not going to

  1497. obey God.

  1498. You're going to take

  1499. every chance you

  1500. have to disobey

  1501. God.

  1502. That's what we

  1503. all want to do.

  1504. God's the one who

  1505. makes us different.

  1506. So, the mindset of

  1507. the flesh is hostile

  1508. to God.

  1509. It doesn't submit to

  1510. God's law.

  1511. Verse, the end of

  1512. verse 7, it's

  1513. unable to do so.

  1514. You think you're a

  1515. good guy without

  1516. God?

  1517. You're not.

  1518. I'm not a good guy

  1519. without God.

  1520. Trust me.

  1521. And I'm not just

  1522. picking on the guys.

  1523. You think you're a

  1524. nice lady without

  1525. God?

  1526. You're not.

  1527. None of us are.

  1528. We are unable to

  1529. be so.

  1530. Verse 8, those who

  1531. are in the flesh

  1532. cannot please God.

  1533. So, I don't care how

1534. good you look on the

  1535. outside.

  1536. This reminds me of

  1537. the passage where it

  1538. says there's going to

1539. be people who get to

  1540. heaven someday and

  1541. stand before God and

1542. they say, God, we did

1543. all this in your name.

  1544. We went to church

  1545. every Sunday.

  1546. We gave our tithe.

  1547. We were good,

  1548. upstanding citizens in

  1549. the community.

1550. And he's going to say,

  1551. depart from me.

  1552. I never knew you

  1553. because I never had

  1554. your heart.

1555. You were doing it in

  1556. your flesh.

1557. You were doing it under

  1558. the law.

1559. You were trying to earn

  1560. it yourself.

1561. And God says, get out.

  1562. You have no standing

  1563. here.

  1564. You have no place

  1565. here.

  1566. You never humbled

  1567. yourself and accepted

  1568. my grace as a

  1569. substitute for your

  1570. religion.

1571. Those who are in the

  1572. flesh cannot please

  1573. God.

  1574. Verse 9, you,

  1575. however, are not in

  1576. the flesh.

  1577. You are in the

  1578. spirit, if indeed the

1579. spirit of God lives in

  1580. you.

  1581. And that's what we

  1582. got to remind ourselves

  1583. of every day.

1584. Does the spirit of God

  1585. live in me?

1586. Then I am not under

  1587. the flesh.

  1588. I'm not under the

  1589. rules.

  1590. I'm not under the

  1591. law.

  1592. I have a real

  1593. relationship with God.

  1594. I'm family.

  1595. I'm family.

1596. Let me live like it.

1597. Let me live like God

  1598. loves me.

  1599. And because he loves

  1600. me, I can love

  1601. others.

  1602. That's the new way.

  1603. The law could expose

  1604. sin, but it couldn't

  1605. erase it.

1606. The law was unable to

1607. do so much that Jesus

  1608. instead did for us.

  1609. The law could diagnose

  1610. the problem, but it

  1611. could never deliver a

  1612. cure.

  1613. Your religion can

  1614. expose sin, but it

  1615. cannot erase it.

  1616. Your religion can

  1617. diagnose a problem, but

1618. it can never deliver a

  1619. cure.

  1620. So where does that

  1621. lead us?

  1622. Religion is no

  1623. substitute for

  1624. relationship.

  1625. And Jesus' forgiveness

  1626. is no substitute for

  1627. his fullness.

1628. You see, it doesn't just

  1629. start with his

  1630. forgiveness.

  1631. Oh, your sin's gone.

1632. You get a blank check.

1633. You get a get into

  1634. heaven free card.

  1635. That's not what it's

  1636. about.

  1637. It's about experiencing

  1638. the fullness of God.

  1639. God, we have unlocked

  1640. the fullness of God.

  1641. His forgiveness was

1642. just the path to his

  1643. fullness.

1644. It was what opened the

  1645. door.

1646. Now we can experience the

  1647. fullness of God, not

  1648. hollow religion.

  1649. Finally, from chains to

  1650. change.

  1651. religion offers you

  1652. chains.

  1653. Jesus offers real

  1654. lasting change.

  1655. Look back at verse

  1656. eight.

1657. We skipped it a minute

1658. ago, but I want to go

  1659. back to it.

  1660. Colossians chapter two

  1661. and verse eight.

1662. Be careful that no one

  1663. takes you captive

  1664. through philosophy and

  1665. empty deceit based on

  1666. human tradition.

  1667. Does that sound like

  1668. religion to you?

  1669. It does to me.

  1670. Taking you captive

  1671. through philosophy and

  1672. empty deceit based on

  1673. human tradition, based

1674. on the elements of the

  1675. world rather than

  1676. Christ.

1677. Now skip down to verse

  1678. 16.

  1679. Therefore, don't let

  1680. anyone judge you in

  1681. regard to food and

1682. drink or in the matter

  1683. of a festival or a new

1684. moon or a Sabbath day.

  1685. These were the

  1686. controversial topics for

  1687. them back then.

  1688. Insert your own

  1689. controversial topics

  1690. that religions argue

  1691. about and people argue

  1692. about.

  1693. Should I?

  1694. Shouldn't I?

  1695. Don't let anyone judge

  1696. you in regards to

  1697. these controversies.

1698. These are a shadow of

  1699. what was to come.

  1700. The substance is Christ.

1701. Is your religion a shadow

1702. or does it have the

  1703. substance of Jesus?

1704. Because most of what we

  1705. get in arguments about

1706. and we go online and we

  1707. bash each other about,

  1708. it's a shadow.

  1709. It's not the substance.

1710. Jesus is not a real part

  1711. of any of that.

  1712. It's just people getting

  1713. caught up in silly,

  1714. vain arguments.

1715. So, let no one condemn

  1716. you by delighting in

  1717. ascetic practices.

1718. I'm not going to get

  1719. into asceticism and all

  1720. that.

  1721. I preached a sermon about

  1722. a year and a half ago

  1723. that talked about

  1724. asceticism and how they

1725. were trying to be more

  1726. holy than everybody else

  1727. by renouncing all the

  1728. pleasures of life.

  1729. They wouldn't allow

  1730. themselves any earthly

  1731. pleasures in saying,

  1732. I'm more like God

  1733. because I've done all

  1734. this.

1735. It's not at all what

  1736. Jesus ever asked them

  1737. to do.

  1738. The worship of angels,

  1739. claiming access to a

  1740. visionary realm.

  1741. Such people are inflated

  1742. by empty notions of

  1743. their unspiritual mind.

1744. He doesn't hold on to

1745. the head from whom the

  1746. whole body, nourished and

  1747. held together by its

  1748. ligaments and tendons,

  1749. grows with growth from

  1750. Christ.

1751. I'm not saying that you

  1752. can't, God doesn't

  1753. sometimes give you a

  1754. vision of something.

  1755. He certainly did that

  1756. in the scriptures and

  1757. he could certainly, if

1758. he chose to, do that

  1759. again today.

1760. But it has to be based

  1761. on the substance of

  1762. Christ.

  1763. It can't ever run

  1764. counteractive to the

  1765. teaching of Jesus or

  1766. lead you someplace that

  1767. Jesus doesn't lead us.

  1768. He is the head.

  1769. He is what guides

  1770. everything else.

  1771. That's what Paul's

  1772. teaching here.

1773. And so verse 20, if

1774. you died with Christ to

  1775. the elements of this

1776. world, why do you then

1777. live as if you still

  1778. belong to the world?

  1779. Folks, he's not just

  1780. talking about going out

  1781. and getting drunk and

  1782. living like a heathen.

  1783. He's saying, why do

1784. you live as though you

1785. belong to this world by

  1786. submitting yourself to

1787. all these rules of the

  1788. law?

  1789. And not just submitting

  1790. yourself, but trying to

  1791. bring everybody else under

  1792. it with you.

1793. That's the context of what

  1794. he's talking about here.

  1795. Why instead don't you

1796. release that and live with

1797. open hands and say, God,

  1798. teach me.

  1799. You guide me now.

1800. I'm not going to be stuck

  1801. in my tradition, my

  1802. expectations, what I'm

1803. used to, what I grew up

  1804. with.

1805. I want you to reprogram me.

1806. Change the way I think.

1807. Why do you submit to

  1808. regulations?

  1809. Don't handle.

  1810. Don't taste.

  1811. Don't touch.

  1812. Anybody ever heard that

  1813. before?

  1814. Don't.

  1815. Don't touch this.

  1816. Don't be around this.

  1817. Don't taste this.

1818. Why do you submit to

  1819. these things?

  1820. All these regulations

1821. refer to what is destined

1822. to perish by being used

  1823. up.

1824. They are human commands and

  1825. doctrines.

  1826. Although these have a

  1827. reputation for wisdom,

  1828. isn't that true?

1829. Some of this stuff, oh

1830. yeah, man, that's the way

  1831. to live right there.

1832. You see how that guy, he

  1833. doesn't do anything wrong.

1834. They have a reputation for

  1835. wisdom.

  1836. But why?

  1837. Verse 23, by promoting

  1838. self-made religion.

1839. Y'all, if we had to focus

1840. on one verse in this

  1841. entire chapter, in this

  1842. entire sermon today, it's

  1843. verse 23.

  1844. Promoting self-made

  1845. religion, false humility,

  1846. and severe treatment of

  1847. the body.

1848. These are not of any value

  1849. in curbing self-indulgence.

  1850. You know why?

1851. Because you end up faking

  1852. it.

1853. You end up focused on the

  1854. outside.

1855. You end up focused on the

1856. flesh, and your heart is

  1857. far from God.

  1858. That's what religion offers

  1859. you.

  1860. Chains.

  1861. Jesus instead wants to

1862. change you, not what you

  1863. do.

  1864. Hello.

  1865. The wasp enjoyed the

  1866. preaching too.

  1867. He's just like, hey, I

1868. got to get a closer look at

  1869. this.

  1870. All right, anyway.

1871. Y'all, we got to do

  1872. something about these

  1873. wasps, all right?

  1874. It's the devil fighting

  1875. right there.

1876. Jesus wants to bring real

  1877. change, all right?

1878. And the wasp wants to

  1879. fight against that.

  1880. That's our final point

  1881. today, from chains to

  1882. change.

1883. Religion will chain you to

  1884. performance, but Jesus

  1885. changes you by his

  1886. presence.

1887. Are you more interested in

  1888. performing according to

  1889. religious expectations than

1890. you are basking in the

  1891. presence of Jesus?

  1892. Galatians 5.

1893. Christ has set us free.

  1894. This means we're really

  1895. free.

1896. Stand firm and don't get

1897. tied up again in the what?

  1898. Chains.

  1899. In the what?

  1900. Chains of slavery.

1901. Time and time again, this

  1902. imagery is used.

1903. And then in verse 4, he

1904. says, if you try to be made

1905. right by the law, you cut

  1906. yourself off from Christ.

  1907. That's strong language, isn't

  1908. it?

1909. The only thing that counts is

  1910. faith working through love.

1911. Don't cut yourself off from

  1912. Christ.

1913. But you do that when you get

1914. out from under his grace and

1915. you go try to live according to

  1916. the law again.

1917. That is not what that's about.

1918. That's not how this life is

  1919. meant to be lived.

1920. Religion is a cage, but Jesus

  1921. is the key.

1922. That sounds strong, doesn't it?

1923. How many of you said when you

1924. came to church this morning, I

1925. bet he's going to call religion a

  1926. cage today.

1927. When I was writing this last

  1928. week, I'm thinking, man, how's

1929. that going to go over?

  1930. Religion is a cage.

1931. But Jesus is the key.

1932. And until he unlocks the cage

1933. for you, can I tell you

  1934. something?

1935. Then religion ceases to be a

  1936. cage.

1937. Once Jesus unlocks the door and

1938. he lets you out and he says,

1939. you don't have to live here

  1940. anymore.

1941. You don't have to live according

1942. to these harsh rules and

  1943. regulations.

1944. I have now freed you by my

  1945. grace.

1946. Then religion becomes a house

1947. that can be built up.

1948. And Jesus is the foundation of

  1949. it.

1950. And then he's building this

1951. house and he says, true

1952. religion, undefiled by God, is

1953. to visit those who need help.

  1954. It's to be a blessing to

  1955. those.

1956. It's to keep yourself unspotted

  1957. from the world.

1958. It's to not be like everybody

  1959. else, think like everybody

  1960. else.

  1961. Why?

1962. Not because we're trying to

1963. obey a list of rules.

1964. Not because we're trying to

1965. check a bunch of boxes.

1966. It's because Jesus is making

  1967. us different.

  1968. It's because he's changing

  1969. us.

1970. And we're not looking at each

1971. other like, huh, that guy, I

1972. saw him drinking a beer the

  1973. other night.

  1974. No way he's saved.

1975. No way he's going to heaven.

1976. That's not the religious, the

1977. religion that Jesus is talking

  1978. about.

  1979. That's the cage.

1980. And maybe the Holy Spirit's

  1981. telling you drinking alcohol

1982. would be a terrible thing.

  1983. Do not do it.

1984. Then you listen to that because

1985. God's got your best interest in

  1986. mind.

1987. Maybe for someone else he's

1988. saying, you worry about you,

  1989. I'm dealing with them.

1990. We don't compare each other

1991. and judge each other according

1992. to this list of legal rules or

  1993. regulations or anything else.

1994. What our religion espouses, we

1995. judge each other according to

  1996. our pursuit of Jesus.

1997. We start right here in our own

  1998. heart.

1999. So, I said this was the last, this

  2000. is the last one.

  2001. From guilt to grace.

  2002. From guilt to grace.

2003. This is my favorite part.

  2004. Verse 13 and 14.

  2005. Finishing it up.

2006. When you were dead in

  2007. trespasses and in the

2008. uncircumcision of your flesh, he

2009. made you alive with him, forgave

  2010. you all your trespasses.

2011. He erased the certificate of debt

2012. with its obligations that was

2013. against you and he opposed you

2014. and opposed to you and he has

2015. now taken it away by nailing it

  2016. to his cross.

  2017. That's what Jesus did.

2018. With all your law breaking, all

2019. your rule breaking, he took it

2020. away so it can't be held against

2021. you anymore and he nailed it to

  2022. his cross.

2023. We read in Romans 8 just a

2024. moment ago and I want to go back

  2025. there.

2026. There is now therefore no

2027. condemnation for those who are in

  2028. Christ Jesus.

2029. No one can condemn you, not even

  2030. yourself.

  2031. I don't know about y'all, but I'm

2032. way harder on myself than I think

  2033. anybody else is.

2034. I can get myself depressed like

  2035. hardly anybody else can.

2036. I can condemn myself and you can

  2037. too.

2038. But no one can truly condemn you if

2039. you are in Christ Jesus.

2040. So don't live under religious rules

2041. and regulations because that opens

  2042. you up for condemnation.

  2043. Yeah, you know what?

2044. You didn't follow all the rules.

  2045. You're a mess.

2046. But if you abandon that and say,

2047. no, God freed me from that.

2048. That's not the world I live in

  2049. anymore.

2050. Now I live under grace.

2051. Now I'm in Christ Jesus and he

2052. says you can't condemn me and I

  2053. can't condemn myself and Satan can't

  2054. condemn you.

2055. In the middle of the night when

  2056. you're having a hard time sleeping,

  2057. Satan can't condemn you.

2058. No one can condemn you because

2059. you're not living according to how

2060. good you are or how bad you are.

2061. You're living according to how

2062. great Jesus is, how forgiving he is,

  2063. how good he is.

2064. Say, no, Jesus is my advocate.

2065. He's the one who stands in for me.

2066. So Max Lucado, a famous Christian

2067. writer, said the same hand that

2068. still the sea stills your guilt.

2069. The same hand that cleansed the

  2070. temple cleanses your heart.

2071. The hand is the hand of God.

2072. The nail is the nail of God.

2073. As the hands of Jesus opened for

2074. the nail, the doors of heaven

  2075. opened for you.

2076. I thought that was beautifully

  2077. written.

2078. This is what Jesus offers to us.

2079. It's what he did for us.

2080. So you could say it this way, and

2081. I read this from Max Lucado, when

2082. grace moves in, guilt has to move

  2083. out.

2084. It has to move out.

2085. God might convict you of sin after

2086. the fact to lead you back to him

2087. and away from something that will

2088. take you down a wrong path.

2089. But you don't get to be overwhelmed

  2090. by guilt anymore.

  2091. Say, no, you've got a new standing, a

  2092. new identity in Christ.

  2093. We're finished.

2094. I want to make this last point before

  2095. we leave today.

2096. Back in Colossians 2, our final text

  2097. here.

  2098. Verse 15.

2099. On that cross, Christ freed himself

2100. from the power of spiritual rulers

  2101. and authorities.

2102. He made a public spectacle of them

2103. by leading them as captives in his

  2104. victory procession.

  2105. Do you see that?

  2106. Everybody look up there.

  2107. His victory procession.

2108. Your translation of the Bible might

2109. put it a slight different way, but

2110. it's saying the same thing.

2111. Jesus, when he forgave us from sin and

2112. he triumphed over sin through his death

2113. and his resurrection, it says he took

2114. all the spiritual rulers and

2115. authorities, religion, and he made a

2116. public spectacle of them by leading

2117. them as captives in his victory

  2118. procession.

2119. Do you realize that when Roman

2120. generals would come back from

2121. fighting in other lands and they would

2122. lead back the victory procession of

2123. their armies, they would have their

2124. captives bound in chains leading them

2125. along saying, look who we captured.

2126. Look at the spoils of war.

2127. Jesus is saying, I took religion

2128. and all those who would legislate

2129. against you and I'm leading them as my

2130. captives in a victory procession.

2131. This reminds me of another victory

  2132. procession.

2133. When Jesus was sitting on a donkey

2134. and he was riding into Jerusalem and

2135. they were waving the palm fronds saying,

  2136. Hosanna, Hosanna.

  2137. Hosanna.

2138. You know what Hosanna means?

  2139. Deliver us.

  2140. Save us.

2141. It's a form of praise saying our

2142. deliverer, our savior has come.

  2143. Please save us.

  2144. The crowd went wild.

2145. They thought Jesus was going to offer

  2146. them political victory.

2147. They thought he was going to free

  2148. them from those chains.

2149. Jesus was offering a different kind of

  2150. victory.

2151. He wasn't interested in freeing them

2152. from Roman chains right then.

2153. He was interested in freeing them

2154. from the chains of religious

  2155. obligation.

2156. Of sin that bound them and held

  2157. them by their flesh.

2158. That's what Jesus was doing.

2159. He was coming to go to a wooden

2160. cross because his victory was not

  2161. about a nation winning.

2162. It was about salvation winning.

2163. And then in 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

    2 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

2164. But thanks be to God who always

2165. leads us in Christ's triumphal

  2166. procession.

2167. And through us spreads the aroma of the

2168. knowledge of him in every place.

2169. That's what this life is.

  2170. It's a victory parade.

2171. This life with Jesus is a victory

  2172. parade.

2173. You're not out there trying to earn the

  2174. victory.

2175. You're not trying to win the game or win

  2176. the championship.

  2177. Jesus already didn't.

  2178. You couldn't.

2179. We were destined to lose.

2180. The enemy against us was greater than

  2181. us.

  2182. But Jesus triumphed.

  2183. He won the victory.

2184. So now he's offering you to go along

2185. with him through this life on his victory

  2186. parade.

  2187. His triumphal procession.

  2188. That's the victory.

  2189. The deliverance.

  2190. Freedom.

  2191. He's offering to you.

  2192. So.

2193. With Jesus instead of religion.

2194. You're not walking toward victory.

  2195. You're walking in it.

  2196. When someone accuses you.

2197. Or you feel like you're not meeting all

2198. the rules or expectations of religion.

2199. I want you to remember.

  2200. The parade isn't canceled.

2201. Jesus still has the victory.

2202. And you're on the winning side.

2203. Would you pray with me now?

  2204. God.

2205. God we went a little longer today than

  2206. usual.

2207. But I just pray that.

2208. I pray that by your spirit you can reveal

  2209. to us.

  2210. The freedom you offer.

2211. That this is not about.

2212. Obeying this church's rules or another

  2213. church's rules or.

  2214. Anybody else.

2215. This is about having a real meaningful

  2216. relationship with you.

  2217. That frees us.

2218. And let's just experience your victory.

2219. And that we're not guided by.

  2220. Somebody says.

2221. This is what you need to do.

2222. Or this is what you shouldn't do.

2223. We're instead guided by your Holy Spirit.

2224. And that will truly change us.

2225. Then we'll become more loving.

  2226. Then we'll become more.

  2227. Grace filled.

  2228. And grace giving people.

2229. It's how you treated us.

2230. And it's how you want us to treat others.

2231. So I pray that you would change your people

  2232. by your spirit.

  2233. Through your word.

2234. We'll give you the glory for it.

  2235. In Jesus name.

  2236. Amen.

2237. Church for sake of time.

2238. We're going to dismiss in just a moment.

  2239. Before we do.

  2240. Linda can you play.

  2241. Amazing grace.

  2242. How sweet the sound.

2243. That saved a wretch like me.

2244. Let's just sing this through.

  2245. The first verse.

  2246. One time together.

  2247. Think about the grace.

2248. That God's given to us.

  2249. How sweet it is.

  2250. Amazing grace.

  2251. How sweet the sound.

2252. That saved a wretch like me.

  2253. I once was lost.

  2254. But now am found.

  2255. Was blind.

  2256. But now.

  2257. I see.

2258. Never forget the grace that we've been shown.

2259. And let's show it to others.

2260. Jared would you come and close us in prayer.

  2261. Amen.

  2262. Amen.

  2263. Thank you.
