  1. We look above the sun. Listen, I am thrilled to continue our brand new sermon series in Ecclesiastes.

  2. We started last week. Let me ask you all this. How many of you are figure it out people?

  3. A couple of hands shot right up. Think about it now. How many of you are figure it out people?

  4. How many of your spouses would say, yeah, he or she is a figure it out person? You're not going to call somebody to fix it for you.

  5. You're going to figure it out. That's what you're going to do. You don't need directions. You don't need an instructions manual.

  6. You definitely don't need GPS telling you where to go. You know the way there.

  7. I was telling my son recently about the Rand McNally Atlas maps.

  8. I used to be the navigator. That was fun. We were traveling all over America.

  9. It's just different back then, you know? Missed exits happened a whole lot more, I think.

  10. Wait, that was the one? Well, you got to tell me sooner.

  11. All right. Figure it out people, man. You don't need directions. You don't need GPS.

  12. You definitely don't need somebody standing over your shoulder telling you how to do something.

  13. You'll figure it out. And truthfully, that's not always a bad thing.

  14. You learn from that. You gain experience. You pick up wisdom from that.

  15. You know how stuff works because you've lived a little.

  16. Most of us have figured out a lot about different things.

  17. Maybe you're somebody who knows a little bit about a lot of things.

  18. But if you live long enough, you eventually figure something else out, too.

  19. And that is this.

  20. Figuring it out doesn't fix it.

  21. It's the truth of it.

  22. You can figure it out.

  23. But that doesn't mean it's fixed.

  24. What do we mean?

  25. You can know exactly what's wrong.

  26. You can understand why it's happening, where it went wrong.

  27. You might even have a pretty good idea of what should be done.

  28. But still, nothing changes.

  29. It might be in the lives of those around you.

  30. It might be in your own heart.

  31. Marriage is still strained.

  32. The anxiety is still there.

  33. The diagnosis doesn't go away.

  34. The family dynamic is still broken.

  35. The situation at work hasn't improved.

  36. And those are the problems that mess with us the most, aren't they?

  37. Not the ones we can't figure out.

  38. The ones we can figure out but can't fix.

  39. So, this is where the teacher, the writer of Ecclesiastes,

  40. picks up in Ecclesiastes chapter 2.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  41. So, if you would take your Bibles and turn with me to Ecclesiastes chapter 2.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  42. We're going to read from verses 12 down through verse 17.

  43. These are the problems that can keep us up at night.

  44. The ones that bring us fear, anxiety, depression.

  45. Somewhere along the way, we realize that wisdom by itself is not the solution.

  46. It can't be.

  47. Now, don't hear what I'm not saying.

  48. As you're turning to Ecclesiastes 2, understand that wisdom matters.

  49. The Bible makes it very clear.

  50. And life itself would make it very clear that wisdom matters.

  51. The Bible values matter.

  52. Wisdom.

  53. Proverbs.

  54. If we accept Solomon, King Solomon, as the writer of Ecclesiastes,

  55. we also understand that he wrote Proverbs.

  56. And in the Proverbs, we see admonishments toward wisdom over and over again.

  57. Particularly in Proverbs 4, he's teaching his son, wisdom matters so much.

  58. Make it be your goal.

  59. Pursue it.

  60. And you realize that Solomon did do that.

  61. He asked God for wisdom.

  62. God granted it to him.

  63. Possibly more than anyone else in his time.

  64. More than anyone else in recorded history, it's possible that Solomon gained wisdom from God.

  65. And so he's teaching his son in Proverbs, hey, wisdom's a big deal.

  66. It'll protect you.

  67. It'll guide you.

  68. It'll look out for you.

  69. It'll keep you from stumbling.

  70. It'll help you be successful in your life.

  71. Just look at me, son.

  72. Look at me.

  73. I have been wise.

  74. And look at all I've accomplished.

  75. And then you get to Ecclesiastes.

  76. And we got a very different picture from Solomon on the subject of wisdom.

  77. So let's look at Ecclesiastes chapter 2 as we pick up our series, Catching Smoke.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  78. How do we live this life under the sun?

  79. Verse 12.

  80. So I decided, the teacher is speaking, he's writing here, and he says, I decided to compare wisdom with foolishness and madness.

  81. For who can do this better than I, the king?

  82. I thought, wisdom is better than foolishness, just as light is better than darkness.

  83. Obviously, right?

  84. Verse 14.

  85. Verse 14.

  86. For the wise can see where they're going, but fools walk in the dark.

  87. Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate.

  88. Both will die.

  89. So I said to myself, since I will end up the same as the fool, what's the value of all my wisdom?

  90. This is all so meaningless.

  91. Anybody ever been there?

  92. You're surrounded by something that you've pursued.

  93. You've gone after it.

  94. You've achieved it.

  95. You've gained it.

  96. You've got it.

  97. You see it every day.

  98. And at some point, you look at it and say, what good did this really do me?

  99. It's all pretty meaningless, isn't it?

  100. That's what we're getting from Solomon.

  101. Y'all, I told you last week, this is a weird book of the Bible.

  102. It's different than most of them.

  103. But it's so important.

  104. It's so crucial.

  105. It's not what we're used to when we're reading the scriptures.

  106. But we can gain so much from it.

  107. Let's pick it up in verse 16.

  108. For the wise and the foolish both die.

  109. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool.

  110. In the days to come, both will be forgotten.

  111. In my Wednesday night, Pastor's Life group, they got a little sneak peek of this.

  112. And toward the end of it, we just touched a little bit on, as we go back and dig a little

  113. deeper into the text of the sermon on Sundays.

  114. We dug into, what does Solomon mean?

  115. This is all so meaningless.

  116. We started looking at the different experiences that you have in life and how you want them

  117. and you think they're great and then you taste them.

  118. And it's like, yeah, well, what's the next thing?

  119. On to the next thing.

  120. So verse 17.

  121. After he realizes this, he says, I came to hate life.

  122. Because everything done here under the sun is so troubling.

  123. Everything is meaningless.

  124. Like chasing the wind.

  125. Something you can never catch.

  126. Like trying to catch smoke in your hand.

  127. So, where does this leave us?

  128. Let's look at number one.

  129. What can we draw from this?

  130. What are some main truths that we can take away from this unsettling passage in Ecclesiastes 2?

  131. Number one, wisdom can explain life, but it can't fix it.

  132. Wisdom can explain life, but it can't fix it.

  133. Look back at verse 14.

  134. The wise can see where they're going, but fools walk in the dark.

  135. So I saw the wise and the foolish share the same fate.

  136. Fools don't know what's coming next.

  137. They miss the life lessons.

  138. They don't learn the moral of the story.

  139. They just blindly go through their life trying to appease their own desires, trying to get what they want,

  140. trying to make themselves feel better, more comfortable.

  141. And they miss so much along the way that wisdom can teach them.

  142. But even the wise eventually share the same fate as the foolish.

  143. So they may have understood far more along the way.

  144. They may have learned valuable lessons, but the value in the end doesn't come from wisdom.

  145. It doesn't come from the learning.

  146. So the teacher speaks as someone who has reached the pinnacle, the ceiling of wisdom.

  147. He's gotten the wisdom part down.

  148. God gave it to him.

  149. This is not earthly wisdom.

  150. This isn't the wisdom that the world considers wise, but it's actually foolishness.

  151. This wisdom came from God.

  152. This is real, genuine, valuable wisdom from God.

  153. And Solomon had it in excess.

  154. And he gets to the end of his life and he says,

  155. man, it was all pretty meaningless.

  156. Didn't really help me all that much.

  157. Why?

  158. Why is that?

  159. He had all the lived experience.

  160. He had all the broad knowledge.

  161. He had deep insights.

  162. You can look at the ancient text, the wisdom of Solomon,

  163. and you can see all the records of Solomon's righteous judgment.

  164. Of course, we've got the famous one with the two women fighting over the baby.

  165. And Solomon says, okay, I'll cut the baby in half.

  166. And each of you can take half if we can't dispute over whose baby this is.

  167. And of course, the real mother said, no, no, no, don't do that.

  168. She can have it.

  169. And then he realized it was hers and awarded the baby to her.

  170. Wisdom was something that Solomon knew.

  171. The kind of wisdom that people assume should make life work.

  172. It should make you highly successful.

  173. But Ecclesiastes is honest enough to say, the teacher teaches us that wisdom alone cannot save us.

  174. There's a British corporate coach named Rashid Ogunlaru.

  175. And he says it this way, intelligence is overrated.

  176. Wisdom is underapplied.

  177. Intelligence is overrated.

  178. And wisdom is underapplied.

  179. I thought that was a very appropriate and applicable sentiment to share with you in our study of Ecclesiastes 2 this morning.

  180. Because intelligence just means gaining more information.

  181. But it's what you, what?

  182. Do with that information that matters.

  183. And wisdom can be gained but not used.

  184. Not utilized.

  185. Not applied to our lives.

  186. How many of us know a thing or two about life?

  187. And how many of us don't follow those things that we know all the time?

  188. Have you ever heard the phrase, well, I knew better?

  189. Or I should have known better.

  190. Of course you did.

  191. That means wisdom not applied.

  192. And I think this is where Solomon found himself.

  193. And I almost wonder if he overstated a little bit in Proverbs when he said, wisdom's going to do it, man.

  194. Wisdom's going to go before you.

  195. It's going to do, basically, the sentiment, he didn't put it in these words,

  196. but the sentiment that you could glean from it is, wisdom's going to do all the work.

  197. You just hang on to wisdom.

  198. And the truth is, wisdom can only get you so far.

  199. So, the teacher tells us that as his wisdom increased, so did his sorrow.

  200. Why would that be the case?

  201. As I got wiser, I got sadder.

  202. I got more sorrowful.

  203. Why?

  204. Because wisdom helps you see what's broken.

  205. It helps you see what's broken in the world around you,

  206. and it helps you see what's broken in your own heart,

  207. in your own soul, in your own mind,

  208. in your own relationships, in you.

  209. Wisdom helps you see yourself more clearly,

  210. but it doesn't always give you the power to heal it.

  211. Wisdom explains why relationships fall apart.

  212. Wisdom explains why injustice persists.

  213. Wisdom explains why systems fail.

  214. Wisdom reveals why life is unfair.

  215. And I hate to say that to some of the younger people in the room.

  216. Man, life's just not fair.

  217. Look, you're going to learn it at some point.

  218. That's why Jesus is so great, because he is.

  219. That's why he stands apart from everybody else,

  220. because he's different than this broken world around us.

  221. So, wisdom can reveal the brokenness,

  222. but it can't help you heal it.

  223. So, Matthew chapter 11, verses 28 and 29.

    Matthew 11:28

  224. This is where Jesus steps into the gap.

  225. Ecclesiastes needs some help here,

  226. and it points us ahead to Jesus.

  227. Jesus never criticizes wisdom,

  228. but he refuses to make it the solution.

  229. He doesn't say, figure it out.

  230. He doesn't say, learn more.

  231. He doesn't say, become more wise.

  232. You will become more wise the longer you spend with the Holy Spirit,

  233. the longer you spend in the Word of God,

  234. the longer you spend around those who have learned wisdom from God and applied it.

  235. You will become more wise.

  236. But Jesus says, this is not the end goal.

  237. This is not what you should be chasing.

  238. You should be chasing me.

  239. He says, come to me.

  240. The invitation is to me.

  241. He says, come to me, all of you who are weary,

  242. and carry heavy burdens.

  243. Maybe you've learned a little bit.

  244. Maybe it's increased your sorrow.

  245. Maybe you've realized the truth about the world around you

  246. and the truth about yourself.

  247. And he says, come to me.

  248. Carry those heavy burdens over here to me and give them to me.

  249. I will give you rest.

  250. He said, trade those heavy burdens for my burden, for my yoke.

  251. It's light.

  252. It's easy comparatively.

  253. Trust me.

  254. Let me teach you because I'm humble and I'm gentle at heart,

  255. and you'll find rest for your souls.

  256. Wisdom can name your weariness.

  257. Jesus invites you to bring that to him.

  258. Ecclesiastes helps us understand why we're tired.

  259. Jesus says, give me your tiredness.

  260. I can give you energy that you don't understand.

  261. It doesn't make any sense.

  262. I can give you peace that surpasses your understanding.

  263. So wisdom diagnoses problems, but Jesus delivers people.

  264. Let's say that one more time.

  265. Wisdom diagnoses problems,

  266. but Jesus is in the people delivering business.

  267. He can deliver your heart.

  268. He can free your soul.

  269. And I could ask for a show of hands.

  270. Let's do that.

  271. How many people in this room today would testify

  272. by just slipping your hand up and say,

  273. Jesus has delivered me?

  274. Yeah.

  275. All across this room.

  276. Those are testimonies,

  277. and you're probably thinking of something in your mind right now,

  278. if not many things,

  279. that allowed you to raise your hand and say,

  280. Jesus delivered me from that.

  281. Time and time throughout the pages of Scripture,

  282. we see the deliverance of the one they called Jesus,

  283. the Christ, the Messiah, Emmanuel, God with us,

  284. who took on human flesh to walk among us and say,

  285. this is how you live this life.

  286. There were some wise rabbis,

  287. some wise Pharisees who came before him

  288. and who were his contemporaries there during his time on earth,

  289. and they would go toe-to-toe with him in the Scriptures,

  290. and with all their wisdom,

  291. they were broken.

  292. And their whole system of religion,

  293. which was based on wisdom from God in the Old Testament,

  294. they knew it inside and out.

  295. They'd studied it.

  296. Their study habits put ours to shame.

  297. These kids growing up in synagogue school,

  298. rabbi school,

  299. they knew it all.

  300. They could quote massive portions of the Old Testament.

  301. But it didn't do them any good

  302. because Jesus hadn't changed their hearts.

  303. What good does your knowledge,

  304. your information,

  305. your intelligence,

  306. your wisdom that you've gained,

  307. do you

  308. if Jesus hasn't freed you?

  309. So,

  310. that's number one.

  311. Jesus delivers people.

  312. This is discipleship.

  313. This is learning how to follow something else,

  314. how to pursue someone different.

  315. Discipleship is not about knowing more information.

  316. It's about learning how to follow.

  317. A church can grow smarter

  318. without growing more faithful.

  319. Direction,

  320. not perfection.

  321. We've been talking about it every week

  322. and we'll continue to do so.

  323. Direction,

  324. not perfection,

  325. means we pursue

  326. the person of Jesus wisely

  327. only through obedience and trust.

  328. We don't chase wisdom

  329. by itself

  330. that leaves us informed

  331. but exhausted.

  332. And that's going to lead us

  333. to our next main point.

  334. Main truth number two,

  335. wisdom without God

  336. eventually leads to despair.

  337. Wisdom without God

  338. eventually leads to despair.

  339. Would you turn back a page

  340. in Ecclesiastes?

  341. Let's go to Ecclesiastes 1.

  342. Wisdom without God

  343. eventually leads to despair.

  344. We were in Ecclesiastes 1 last week.

  345. We're going to jump ahead.

  346. I think we hit verses 1 through 11.

  347. We're going to jump into verse 12 now.

  348. Verse 12, Ecclesiastes 1.

  349. I, the teacher,

  350. was king of Israel

  351. and I lived in Jerusalem.

  352. I devoted myself

  353. to search for understanding

  354. and to explore by wisdom

  355. everything being done

  356. under the heaven.

  357. I soon discovered

  358. that God has dealt

  359. a tragic existence

  360. to the human race.

  361. I observed everything going on

  362. under the sun.

  363. And really,

  364. it's all meaningless,

  365. like chasing the wind.

  366. He repeats himself a lot

  367. in this book, doesn't he?

  368. This is the theme

  369. that we see

  370. throughout Ecclesiastes.

  371. What is wrong

  372. cannot be made right.

  373. What's missing

  374. cannot be recovered.

  375. So I said to myself,

  376. look, I'm wiser

  377. than any of the kings

  378. who ruled Jerusalem before me,

  379. including his father David.

  380. That's a big statement, isn't it?

  381. He's kind of flexing

  382. on all of them,

  383. saying, look at me, man.

  384. God has given me

  385. so much wisdom,

  386. so much wealth,

  387. so much success.

  388. I've gone higher

  389. than any of them did.

  390. I've got greater wisdom

  391. and knowledge

  392. than any of them.

  393. Verse 17,

  394. so I set out

  395. to learn everything

  396. from wisdom

  397. to madness

  398. and folly.

  399. But I learned firsthand

  400. that pursuing all this

  401. is like chasing the wind.

  402. And he did.

  403. You read about Solomon?

  404. He couldn't get enough wives

  405. to marry.

  406. And then he wasn't

  407. satisfied with that.

  408. He had a stable

  409. of what you'd call concubines

  410. in his palace.

  411. He had everything

  412. that the flesh

  413. could desire.

  414. And it left him

  415. saying,

  416. it's like chasing the wind.

  417. I keep chasing it

  418. and I can't catch it.

  419. The greater my wisdom,

  420. the greater my grief.

  421. To increase knowledge

  422. only increases sorrow.

  423. So wisdom without God

  424. eventually will lead you

  425. to despair.

  426. Being right

  427. doesn't keep you

  428. from being empty.

  429. You can be right

  430. and it doesn't always feel good,

  431. does it?

  432. You can be right

  433. and you can even win

  434. and sometimes

  435. it's not very satisfying.

  436. Gaining wisdom

  437. and knowing the end result,

  438. knowing the outcome,

  439. knowing how it should go

  440. and knowing what the problem is

  441. does not guarantee you joy.

  442. Doesn't guarantee you fulfillment.

  443. That's what the teacher

  444. is trying to teach us

  445. in Ecclesiastes.

  446. He's comparing wisdom

  447. and foolishness honestly.

  448. He's not saying foolishness

  449. is better than wisdom.

  450. He's saying none of it

  451. is going to fulfill you.

  452. None of it is going to help you.

  453. Wisdom is better than foolishness.

  454. Light is better than darkness.

  455. But wisdom still runs into a wall

  456. that it can't get through.

  457. It still slams up against a wall

  458. that there's no doorway through

  459. until Jesus steps in and says,

  460. I'm the door.

  461. I'm the way.

  462. The wisdom should lead you to me.

  463. And if it doesn't,

  464. you'll never be happy.

  465. It'll never do you any real good.

  466. It must lead you to me

  467. because death is coming.

  468. Death is coming for you.

  469. It's coming for me

  470. and it doesn't care how smart you are.

  471. It doesn't care how much wisdom you've gained

  472. or how much you accomplished

  473. or how successful or unsuccessful

  474. you were on this earth.

  475. It comes for all of us.

  476. The wise and the foolish

  477. share the same ending.

  478. Both are eventually forgotten.

  479. Both lose control

  480. of what they've built,

  481. of what they've accomplished

  482. on this earth

  483. and your family

  484. and your job,

  485. your career,

  486. your friendships,

  487. your hobbies.

  488. It's where wisdom runs out.

  489. And so if wisdom is your ultimate hope,

  490. what happens

  491. when it can't save you?

  492. It's a gift,

  493. but it's never meant to be God.

  494. Wisdom cannot be God.

  495. But here's the good news

  496. that Ecclesiastes cannot yet announce.

  497. Go to John chapter six.

  498. Jesus steps directly into this limitation.

  499. This is the good news

  500. that it was too soon

  501. for the teacher to write about

  502. in Ecclesiastes.

  503. John six,

  504. chapter six,

  505. chapter six,

  506. verse 64.

  507. Jesus is teaching his followers,

  508. large group of followers

  509. gathered around Jesus,

  510. many more than just his 12.

  511. He had a large group

  512. of those who had jumped on board

  513. and said,

  514. man,

  515. this guy's great.

  516. I love his teaching.

  517. He's teaching something different.

  518. We want to follow him.

  519. And Jesus says,

  520. some of you,

  521. some of you don't believe me.

  522. Y'all,

  523. I'm sorry to say

  524. we could probably look out

  525. across a group this large,

  526. statistics would say

  527. and say some of us,

  528. some of us probably

  529. don't believe Jesus.

  530. We'll act like we do.

  531. But just like this large group

  532. of followers

  533. that Jesus attracted,

  534. he said,

  535. some of you don't believe me.

  536. And then he said,

  537. this is why I said

  538. people can't come to me

  539. unless the Father

  540. gives them to me.

  541. At this point,

  542. many of these disciples

  543. turned away

  544. and deserted him.

  545. They quit following.

  546. Said,

  547. oh, well,

  548. this is a different vibe here,

  549. Jesus.

  550. Thought you were just

  551. teaching all the feel-good stuff.

  552. You're going to bring

  553. life and peace

  554. and joy and hope

  555. and this is all great.

  556. What do you mean

  557. some of us don't believe you?

  558. What do you mean

  559. we can't follow you

  560. unless the Father

  561. has given us to you?

  562. And they started

  563. to drift away.

  564. And then Jesus

  565. turned to his 12

  566. that he called out

  567. specifically

  568. and he said,

  569. are you also

  570. going to leave?

  571. And Simon Peter,

  572. of course,

  573. the spokesman of the group

  574. speaks up

  575. and what does he say?

  576. Lord,

  577. to whom would we go?

  578. you have the words

  579. of eternal life.

  580. We believe

  581. and we know

  582. that you

  583. are the Holy

  584. One

  585. of God.

  586. Notice what Peter said.

  587. Notice what he didn't say.

  588. He doesn't say,

  589. Jesus,

  590. you explain everything.

  591. You make it all

  592. make sense.

  593. Y'all,

  594. the truth is

  595. if you've ever

  596. opened up the Gospels,

  597. Matthew,

  598. Mark,

  599. Luke,

  600. and John

  601. and you've got

  602. a red letter Bible

  603. and you see the words

  604. of Jesus

  605. in red

  606. but even if you don't,

  607. you go read

  608. the words of Jesus,

  609. he usually didn't

  610. explain everything.

  611. He usually didn't

  612. make it all fit together.

  613. He was pretty cryptic.

  614. He was pretty hard

  615. to understand

  616. about a lot of things.

  617. And so this wasn't

  618. based on Peter saying,

  619. oh wow Jesus,

  620. you just overwhelm us

  621. with all this wisdom.

  622. Half the time

  623. they couldn't figure out

  624. what he was saying.

  625. But what they did

  626. figure out was

  627. he's got the words

  628. of eternal life.

  629. This is different.

  630. This means something.

  631. He's different

  632. than all these other rabbis

  633. just spouting their wisdom.

  634. He's giving us

  635. real hope.

  636. He's giving us

  637. real truth.

  638. Peter doesn't say

  639. your teaching,

  640. Jesus,

  641. lines up with the

  642. historical Jewish

  643. doctrine handed down

  644. to us from generation

  645. to generation.

  646. He doesn't say,

  647. Jesus,

  648. you are everything

  649. that we've been

  650. studying about

  651. and how it all,

  652. you make it all

  653. fit together,

  654. Jesus.

  655. Funny thing is,

  656. Jesus did make it

  657. all fit together

  658. but they couldn't

  659. even understand

  660. all that back then.

  661. But instead,

  662. Peter says,

  663. you have the words

  664. of eternal life.

  665. We believe

  666. and so that's

  667. how we know.

  668. Because we believe,

  669. you have born

  670. faith in our hearts.

  671. How many of you

  672. remember the day

  673. when you said,

  674. I believe in Jesus

  675. and faith was birthed

  676. in your heart

  677. by the Holy Spirit

  678. of God that day?

  679. Can you remember

  680. that day?

  681. Yeah.

  682. Stoney just gave

  683. testimony of that day

  684. when he was a child

  685. and he stood up

  686. and said,

  687. yes,

  688. I believed then,

  689. I still believe today,

  690. I have this faith

  691. that God gave to me

  692. and he has established

  693. it in my life.

  694. I'm going to get up

  695. and testify

  696. and identify

  697. as a follower,

  698. a disciple of Jesus.

  699. And he set the example

  700. for his family

  701. and many others

  702. to come

  703. who are going to do

  704. the same thing.

  705. Peter said,

  706. we believe

  707. and now we have

  708. this wisdom from you.

  709. This knowledge

  710. of you

  711. has come

  712. from us believing

  713. you

  714. and the faith

  715. that you have given

  716. then to us.

  717. We believe

  718. so this is how we know.

  719. Our faith in you

  720. has unlocked

  721. wisdom for us.

  722. Wisdom runs out

  723. but Jesus does not.

  724. The teacher

  725. in Ecclesiastes

  726. shows us the wall

  727. and Jesus says,

  728. I'm the door

  729. through the wall.

  730. We don't follow Jesus

  731. because we have

  732. all the answers.

  733. We follow him

  734. because we believe

  735. he is the answer.

  736. So even when wisdom

  737. runs out

  738. and certainty

  739. is not available,

  740. we follow

  741. the direction

  742. of Jesus

  743. and that is what

  744. I believe God

  745. has laid out

  746. for our church.

  747. Jamie referenced it

  748. in her prayer

  749. just a moment ago.

  750. God has been working

  751. in this church.

  752. I can only testify

  753. for the last few years

  754. since I've been here

  755. but I've seen

  756. with my own eyes

  757. God working

  758. in our church

  759. throughout our Sunday

  760. school classes,

  761. throughout our small groups,

  762. the men's group

  763. that meets

  764. on Monday night,

  765. the couples group

  766. that meets

  767. on Tuesday night.

  768. Penny has her

  769. Bible study

  770. that she leads

  771. over in Lily's.

  772. Listen,

  773. God is working

  774. through the people

  775. of this church.

  776. That's what he does.

  777. He doesn't use institutions.

  778. He uses people

  779. and he called

  780. a bunch of people

  781. together

  782. to say fellowship

  783. together,

  784. stick together,

  785. do this life

  786. together

  787. as a church.

  788. You're my church.

  789. I died for you.

  790. I love you.

  791. I care about you.

  792. Care about each other

  793. the same way.

  794. So that's the wisest

  795. direction for our church.

  796. Practically speaking,

  797. what does this look like?

  798. Discipleship.

  799. God,

  800. help me follow you

  801. more closely

  802. and if we're all

  803. doing that together

  804. then our church

  805. will follow you

  806. more closely.

  807. God,

  808. make me more hospitable

  809. to each other.

  810. Make me actually

  811. care enough

  812. to go out of my way

  813. to help somebody.

  814. You want to see

  815. what Jesus was

  816. on this earth?

  817. He was hospitable.

  818. He was kind.

  819. He would help people.

  820. He would meet

  821. their immediate needs.

  822. They were hungry.

  823. He would feed them.

  824. They were hurting.

  825. He would heal them.

  826. Their souls were broken.

  827. He would speak life

  828. to them.

  829. How can we be hospitable

  830. in the way of Jesus?

  831. And then the mission.

  832. We've seen the mission

  833. clearly laid out

  834. for our church.

  835. We love God best

  836. by loving whom

  837. he loves.

  838. So we go share

  839. the gospel,

  840. the good news of Jesus

  841. with anyone

  842. that once

  843. we were all sinners

  844. and Jesus came

  845. and died

  846. for the punishment

  847. for our sin.

  848. He took our place

  849. when he hung

  850. on that cross

  851. and allowed himself

  852. to be killed,

  853. put to death,

  854. suffer all that torment

  855. for your sin,

  856. for mine,

  857. so we wouldn't have

  858. to face the eternal

  859. wrath of God.

  860. And instead,

  861. we get to place hope

  862. not in just the one

  863. who died,

  864. but also the one

  865. who rose from the dead

  866. and said,

  867. I'm alive today.

  868. I've proved I'm God.

  869. I've walked with you.

  870. I've showed you

  871. how to live this life.

  872. Put your faith in me,

  873. Jesus says.

  874. Come to me

  875. and I will give you hope.

  876. I will give you rest.

  877. And that's the mission.

  878. We take that message

  879. to everybody

  880. who will listen

  881. and we show them

  882. hospitality.

  883. That's how we become

  884. more and closer

  885. disciples of Jesus.

  886. That's how we obey him.

  887. That is the direction

  888. for our church.

  889. We obey God

  890. and we strive

  891. to walk more closely

  892. with him.

  893. We're kind

  894. and loving

  895. and going out

  896. of our way

  897. to help those around us

  898. and we keep his mission

  899. above our own.

  900. That's wisdom

  901. unlocked

  902. by our faith.

  903. Ecclesiastes

  904. does not instruct us

  905. to abandon wisdom.

  906. It warns us

  907. to stop

  908. worshiping it.

  909. Wisdom matters,

  910. but it was never meant

  911. to carry the weight

  912. of eternal meaning.

  913. Only God

  914. can handle the weight

  915. of eternal meaning.

  916. That weight belongs

  917. to him alone.

  918. Ecclesiastes

  919. shows us

  920. the limits

  921. of wisdom

  922. under the sun.

  923. Jesus invites us

  924. to take all

  925. of our wisdom,

  926. our earthly wisdom,

  927. all of our understanding,

  928. even that which we've

  929. gained from him

  930. and say,

  931. God,

  932. thank you

  933. for teaching me

  934. in this life.

  935. Thank you

  936. for showing me

  937. things,

  938. for guiding me

  939. through,

  940. for helping me

  941. learn valuable lessons,

  942. but God,

  943. that's not the end goal,

  944. not to say,

  945. look how much I know.

  946. That puffs us up.

  947. Paul teaches us

  948. that knowledge

  949. puffs up.

  950. I get the picture

  951. of a balloon head,

  952. you know,

  953. just getting bigger

  954. and bigger

  955. the more it learns.

  956. And I just want

  957. to stick a pin

  958. in it sometimes.

  959. Watch it pop.

  960. That's not how

  961. God wants us

  962. to live this life.

  963. Just puffing

  964. ourselves up

  965. with more knowledge,

  966. more wisdom.

  967. He says,

  968. take all that wisdom,

  969. hand it back to me

  970. and say,

  971. God,

  972. teach me

  973. how this

  974. will lead me

  975. to you.

  976. Teach me

  977. how this

  978. will make a difference

  979. in your kingdom

  980. on this earth.

  981. Teach me

  982. how this will help

  983. accomplish your mission

  984. on this earth.

  985. Then we can get

  986. to the end of our life

  987. and we don't have

  988. to look back

  989. and say,

  990. man,

  991. I did it all,

  992. I gained it all,

  993. and it didn't really

  994. mean anything.

  995. We can look back

  996. and say,

  997. all the wisdom

  998. that God gave me,

  999. all the resources

  1000. he gave me,

  1001. all the experiences,

  1002. good and bad,

  1003. he gave me,

  1004. he used to make

  1005. a difference

  1006. in something

  1007. that matters.

  1008. So when we live

  1009. life under the sun,

  1010. what do we do?

1011. We look above the sun.

1012. Can we say it together,

  1013. church?

  1014. We're going to keep

  1015. asking this question

  1016. and answering it together

  1017. throughout this series.

  1018. How do we live

  1019. under the sun?

  1020. Let's say it together.

1021. We look above the sun.

  1022. One more time,

  1023. how do we live

  1024. under the sun?

1025. We look above the sun.

  1026. God,

  1027. that's what we're doing

  1028. right now.

  1029. We're casting our eyes

  1030. above the sun,

  1031. above this world,

  1032. above the highest point

  1033. that we can see.

  1034. We're casting our eyes

  1035. on you.

  1036. Hebrews 12 says,

  1037. we look to Jesus.

  1038. He's the author

  1039. of our faith.

  1040. He'll be the finisher

  1041. of our faith.

  1042. And until that day,

  1043. teach us

1044. how to keep our eyes

  1045. fixed above the sun.

  1046. because everything

  1047. under it

  1048. is meaningless.

  1049. But you bring

  1050. the meaning.

  1051. You bring

  1052. what matters.

  1053. You bring

  1054. the why.

  1055. Help us

  1056. to never

  1057. forget it.

  1058. There's somebody

  1059. here today

  1060. who doesn't know you.

  1061. Help them

  1062. to make this

  1063. the day.

  1064. Speak to their hearts

  1065. right now.

  1066. Convict them

  1067. of their need

  1068. for you.

  1069. And let this

  1070. be the day

  1071. that they make

  1072. the decision

  1073. and say,

  1074. I believe.

  1075. I put my faith

  1076. in you.

  1077. We'll give you

  1078. the glory for it.

  1079. Church,

  1080. while your heads

  1081. are bowed

  1082. and your eyes

  1083. are closed,

  1084. I'm going to ask

  1085. that question.

  1086. If there's somebody

  1087. here,

  1088. maybe a guest

  1089. or maybe somebody

  1090. who's been coming

  1091. for a long time,

  1092. but you say,

  1093. today is the day

1094. that I want to make

  1095. this decision

  1096. for myself,

  1097. not because I was

  1098. raised around the church

  1099. or not because I

  1100. always figured

  1101. I was a Christian,

  1102. but I'm going to,

  1103. for myself

  1104. and my family,

  1105. today,

  1106. I'm going to put

  1107. my faith in Jesus.

  1108. Would you slip

  1109. your hand up?

  1110. I'd love to talk

  1111. with you.

  1112. I'd love to pray

  1113. with you.

  1114. If that's you

  1115. right now,

  1116. I want to put

  1117. my faith in Jesus

  1118. today,

  1119. I believe.

  1120. And slip your hand

  1121. up now.

  1122. Thank you.

1123. For the rest of you,

  1124. let me ask you

  1125. this question.

  1126. If God's working

  1127. on your heart

  1128. to keep your eyes

  1129. fixed on him,

  1130. to not chase

  1131. what you think

  1132. will fulfill you,

  1133. what you think

1134. you need in your life,

  1135. but to chase

  1136. Jesus first,

  1137. whether it's wisdom,

  1138. whether it's wealth,

  1139. whether it's anything

  1140. else.

  1141. You say,

  1142. God's working on me.

1143. I need to place him

  1144. as the most important

1145. thing that I can gain

  1146. on this world.

  1147. Would you slip

  1148. your hand up now

  1149. and I'll pray

  1150. for you as well.

  1151. Thank you.

  1152. Thank you.

  1153. God,

  1154. across the room,

  1155. your people

  1156. are in an attitude

  1157. of prayer with you.

  1158. Your spirit

  1159. has free reign

  1160. in this place.

  1161. I pray that you

  1162. would move

  1163. in our hearts,

  1164. that you would

  1165. reveal to us

  1166. how we can learn

  1167. from this valuable

  1168. writing centuries ago.

  1169. It says,

  1170. don't fix your eyes

  1171. on wisdom.

  1172. Don't fix your eyes

  1173. on anything else.

  1174. Fix your eyes

  1175. above the sun

  1176. on God himself,

  1177. Jesus Christ,

  1178. the one

  1179. who will always care.

  1180. We'll give you

  1181. the glory for it.

  1182. church,

  1183. let me close us

  1184. in prayer this morning.

  1185. God,

  1186. we thank you

  1187. for worshiping

  1188. with us today.

  1189. We thank you

  1190. for joining us

  1191. as we gather together.

  1192. We don't want this

1193. to be a one time.

  1194. We meet on Sundays

1195. and then we get back

1196. to the rest of our week.

1197. We want to carry you

  1198. with us

  1199. when we go home,

1200. to carry you with us

  1201. whatever we're doing

  1202. in this life.

  1203. That's what will

  1204. make the impact.

  1205. That's how we apply

  1206. the wisdom we learn

1207. is when we live it out

  1208. through the filter

  1209. of Jesus,

  1210. guiding our thoughts,

  1211. guiding our words,

  1212. guiding our actions.

  1213. Would you remain

1214. in an attitude of prayer

  1215. for me

1216. for just a minute longer?

  1217. Linda's going to

  1218. keep playing

  1219. and

  1220. if there's something

  1221. God's working

  1222. on your heart

  1223. about right now,

  1224. give him time

1225. to speak to you clearly

  1226. in the stillness

  1227. of this moment.
