  1. Well, hey, church family. I know most of us are snowed in right now, and we will get through this time.

  2. And I know it's a bit of an imposition, maybe. Not what we were expecting up until just a few days ago.

  3. And so I want to just direct us for a few minutes, even though we can't gather together in person right now,

  4. if you're able to gather with us online this Sunday, or if you're able to go back and watch this later,

  5. then I want to draw your attention to John chapter 15. John chapter 15.

John 15 chapter mention John 15 chapter mention

  6. Jesus is talking about remaining, or your Bible might say abiding.

  7. And it's kind of the same word. This was a Greek word. Of course, we know the Bible was, the New Testament was written in Greek.

  8. Old Testament largely written in Hebrew. And so even though we are grateful we now have an English Bible that we can read from easily,

  9. we sometimes want to go back and find what was that original word that was used.

  10. Well, when we see this word remain or abide in John chapter 15 and verse 4, it was the Greek word meno.

    John 15 chapter mention

  11. And what it meant was to abide, to remain, to stay, to dwell, or to continue.

  12. So kind of we get the full picture of what Jesus is trying to teach us here in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  13. So as most of us are snowed in, the roads are closed, our plans have changed, or been postponed.

  14. I know many of us had games. I was supposed to coach a game this Saturday. Of course, that got rescheduled.

  15. And whether we like it or not, we're being told we need to remain inside.

  16. Sometimes we're telling ourselves, you need to remain inside.

  17. The roads may not be safe to travel, or whatever hazards this weather has brought our way is causing us to mostly stay inside for a couple of days.

  18. So I've been thinking about this over these last couple days.

  19. And what if this idea of remaining is not an inconvenience, but it's an invitation?

  20. And I think that's what Jesus was expressing to us here in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  21. He says,

  22. I am the vine. You are the branches.

  23. Our two boys, Austin and Bo, have memorized that verse.

  24. And occasionally in our family devotional time before we tuck them into bed, we'll have them say this verse along with some others.

  25. And I love how they do it.

  26. They say,

  27. It really emphasizes that idea that, look, apart from God, we can do nothing of true eternal value.

  28. He is the access.

  29. He is the key that unlocks the eternal world.

  30. And we only get access to that through Jesus.

  31. So, Jesus is not raising his voice here.

  32. He's not trying to challenge us into something big and bold.

  33. He's actually bringing it down to something quiet, something calm.

  34. It evokes the psalm that says,

  35. Be still and know that I am God.

  36. He's not taking us on a guilt trip.

  37. He's just simply issuing a very basic command.

  38. Remain in me or abide in me.

  39. And then he reminds us,

  40. I'm the vine.

  41. You as the branch will grow from me.

  42. So, a branch is not doing the work itself.

  43. It's growing out from the vine.

  44. That's why he says,

  45. You've got to remain attached to me.

  46. So, a branch, what does a branch do?

  47. Its one job is to stay connected.

  48. So, whether we're stuck at home,

  49. or we're busy with our normal, usual weekday schedule,

  50. we have the same job.

  51. To stay connected to the vine.

  52. And when we start doing that,

  53. focusing on that,

  54. then we find ourselves with less anxiety,

  55. less restlessness,

  56. our drive to go out and accomplish,

  57. it might change a little bit.

  58. Our need to feel useful and productive,

  59. it might look a little different.

  60. When we're staying connected to the vine.

  61. That's going to be uncomfortable for many of us.

  62. Because being still,

  63. like the psalmist encouraged us to do,

  64. has a way of revealing

  65. the noise in our own hearts,

  66. the noise in our own minds

  67. that we usually try to quiet down

  68. and distract with everything else

  69. going on around us.

  70. Sometimes that noise

  71. can drown out everything else.

  72. And that's the noise

  73. that Jesus wants to address directly.

  74. I'm thinking of Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  75. and the story of Mary and Martha.

  76. Many of us who have been in church

  77. for most of our lives

  78. are familiar with this story.

  79. And if you're not, that's okay.

  80. Jesus went back to his hometown

  81. to visit some of his best friends,

  82. Mary and Martha

  83. and their brother Lazarus.

  84. And he comes into their house

  85. and it's a big party

  86. and everybody's having a great time

  87. and everybody's so excited to see him.

  88. And the two sisters,

  89. Mary and Martha,

  90. responded or reacted very differently

  91. to Jesus' visit.

  92. Mary was so overjoyed

  93. at seeing the Son of God,

  94. whom they knew well,

  95. lifelong friends,

  96. come and visit her house

  97. that she just sat down

  98. and said,

  99. Jesus, I'm so glad you're here.

  100. Just teach me.

  101. I just want to listen to you.

  102. I want to listen to you talk.

  103. I don't want to miss a thing

  104. of this time with you,

  105. this experience.

  106. Martha, on the other hand,

  107. responded differently, didn't she?

  108. She was so distracted by her task.

  109. And in chapter 10

  110. of the Gospel of Luke

  111. in verse 38,

  112. it says,

  113. Martha was distracted

  114. by her many tasks,

  115. but Mary sat at the Lord's feet

  116. and was listening to what he said.

  117. Martha wasn't being lazy.

  118. She was being responsible.

  119. She was serving Jesus.

  120. Isn't that what we're called to do?

  121. We're called to serve God?

  122. That's literally what Martha

  123. was trying to do in that moment.

  124. Her heart was in the right place,

  125. and yet,

  126. her heart was also

  127. not in the right place.

  128. It missed what was most important.

  129. And that's what Jesus said

  130. to Martha.

  131. It seems that

  132. he addressed her gently,

  133. and he said,

  134. Martha, Martha,

  135. you're worried,

  136. and you're upset about

  137. many things,

  138. but only one thing

  139. was truly necessary.

  140. And Mary chose that.

  141. She sat at my feet.

  142. Her heart was toward me.

  143. It wasn't just toward

  144. serving me.

  145. You know what's interesting there?

  146. Is you and I

  147. can get caught up

  148. in a lot of good things

  149. that can actually

  150. cause us to get

  151. disconnected

  152. from the vine.

  153. It can cause us

  154. to stop

  155. abiding

  156. or remaining

  157. in Jesus.

  158. We can be so busy

  159. trying to keep

  160. all his commandments

  161. that we read

  162. in the scriptures,

  163. trying to do

  164. all the work

  165. that we feel like

  166. he's laid out

  167. for us to do,

  168. trying to keep up

  169. with all the things

  170. that God has given

  171. to us in our life

  172. that we forget

  173. that really the main

  174. pursuit is him.

  175. It's a relationship

  176. with him.

  177. Mary chose that.

  178. She chose presence

  179. over productivity.

  180. Martha was so concerned

  181. with being productive,

  182. she missed

  183. just the presence

  184. of Jesus.

  185. Mary chose

  186. abiding

  187. over activity.

  188. Martha was so

  189. caught up in

  190. I've got to go do something.

  191. I've got to get this

  192. all taken care of.

  193. And some of us

  194. are just wired that way.

  195. others,

  196. it's just easier

  197. to sit down and say,

  198. you know what?

  199. I'm just going to sit here

  200. right in this moment.

  201. I'm going to be with Jesus

  202. right now.

  203. I'm going to soak in

  204. everything

  205. that he has to teach me.

  206. Everything else

  207. can wait.

  208. So,

  209. Jesus doesn't

  210. shame Martha,

  211. but he invites her

  212. just like he invited

  213. all of us

  214. in this passage

  215. in John

  216. to rest in him,

  217. to abide in him,

  218. to remain in him,

  219. to stay connected

  220. in him.

  221. And so maybe

  222. in your life,

  223. maybe there's been

  224. a time when you

  225. were connected

  226. very closely.

  227. Maybe you've gotten

  228. a little disconnected.

  229. And that's why

  230. Jesus says remain.

  231. Stay there.

  232. Don't break

  233. the connection.

  234. The connection

  235. can always come back,

  236. but don't break it.

  237. because if we want

  238. the fruit

  239. that will grow

  240. from God,

  241. we read about

  242. the fruit of the Spirit.

  243. Love, joy, peace,

  244. long-suffering,

  245. gentleness, goodness,

  246. patience.

  247. All these things

  248. that we need

  249. in our lives,

  250. our souls know

  251. we need them,

  252. our relationships

  253. know we need them,

  254. our spouse knows

  255. we need them,

  256. those in our life

  257. that interact with us

  258. on a daily basis,

  259. they know we need

  260. this fruit of the Spirit

  261. and we want it.

  262. But often we don't

  263. see that fruit

  264. because we've become

  265. disconnected

  266. and we're not remaining.

  267. We're not abiding.

  268. So let's take advantage

  269. of this time,

  270. these snow days.

  271. I don't know

  272. if school's going

  273. to be canceled

  274. on Monday,

  275. I'm sure we'll know

  276. that soon,

  277. but listen,

  278. whatever our situation

  279. is in the next hours

  280. or days that come

  281. and then as we get

  282. back into regular life,

  283. let's abide in Him.

  284. Let's remain in Him.

  285. Slow our pace,

  286. soften those reactions,

  287. loosen our grip,

  288. hands open,

  289. eyes up,

  290. and God,

  291. teach me to abide.
