  1. We have been learning to look above the sun for the last several weeks, and we have been digging

  2. ! We have been digging through this series on the book of Ecclesiastes. Listen, before we go any further, I want to introduce, I'm sorry, dismiss the children, kindergarten through second grade.

  3. There's a little bit of a ring back here, if you wouldn't mind turning me maybe down just a smidge, at least in these monitors up here.

  4. Listen, so kids, kindergarten through second grade, you are dismissed to Children's Church. If you'd like to head to the back, you can do that now.

  5. And before we go any further, can we stop and pray for our nation, for the nation of Israel, for the conflict happening in the Middle East, which, of course, our president just announced this weekend.

  6. So, if you wouldn't mind going to Lord in prayer, I'm going to lead us in a special prayer. I appreciate Joe Bill Brock, our deacon, leading us in that earlier, and I'd like to dedicate one prayer to that this morning.

  7. So, if you wouldn't mind bowing your heads with me at this time.

  8. Father in heaven, conflict is a real part of our world. We look forward to the day when all strivings will cease.

  9. We look forward to the day when we'll beat our swords and weapons into plowshares.

  10. The Prince of Peace will rule.

  11. But until that day, we live in a broken world full of conflict.

  12. There's a historic conflict which began,

  13. we read about it in the old, pages of the Old Testament,

  14. between the Muslim people, the Jewish people.

  15. We pray for peace to come to that region.

  16. We pray for the peace of your people.

  17. We pray for safety for those who are fighting on the other side of the world.

  18. We pray for those who are making decisions that they would be guided by wisdom from on high.

  19. We always pray for a peaceful resolution to conflict.

  20. Sometimes history has shown us that war is necessary.

  21. But we ask that you would reign over it, and in your timing,

  22. you would cause a peaceful resolution to come.

  23. We pray for protection for the men and women who are serving in that part of the world.

  24. We ask your spirit to build a hedge of protection around them.

  25. We ask that we would be faithful to lift them up in prayer,

  26. to do whatever we can on the home front,

  27. to support and pray for you to rule over that situation.

  28. Thank you for the hope we have in you, God,

  29. and that no matter what happens,

  30. whether things seem under control or out of control,

  31. we know that you're always in control.

  32. It's in Jesus' name we pray.

  33. Amen.

  34. Have you ever carried on a conversation with someone

  35. and you felt like they weren't really listening to you?

  36. They were just waiting for you to take a breath

  37. so they could have their turn to talk?

  38. Or have you been the person who was waiting for your turn to talk

  39. and not really listening?

  40. Look, we probably all find ourselves on both sides of that coin,

  41. but the reality is sometimes we're only half listening

  42. and we're just waiting to get a word in edgewise.

  43. You can always tell when somebody's not really dialed in to what you're saying.

  44. They might be nodding along with you.

  45. Maybe they're even smiling,

  46. but their mind is thinking about what they're going to say next.

  47. If we're honest with ourselves,

  48. sometimes our prayers look a lot like that.

  49. We do far more talking and not nearly enough listening.

  50. What would it look like to have a one-sided conversation with God

  51. where he's the one doing the talking?

  52. Let's think through that as we study in Ecclesiastes chapter 5.

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  53. So if you would take the Word of God with you,

  54. and if you don't have a copy, look on with somebody.

  55. Some of the verses we'll have up on the screen,

  56. but some of them I'd love for you to grab a copy of the Word of God in front of you

  57. or look on with somebody.

  58. Or if you want to pull up the Bible app on your device, that's fine too.

  59. But we're in Ecclesiastes chapter 5

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  60. as we're making our way through this fascinating book

  61. in our series called Catching Smoke, Living Life Under the Sun.

  62. We read a lot of typology in Ecclesiastes as he says,

  63. chasing after the wind or trying to catch smoke in your hand,

  64. something that just seems like a fool's errand.

  65. You're never really going to be able to achieve that.

  66. Nobody can catch smoke in your hand.

  67. Nobody can catch the wind.

  68. So how do we live this life under the sun?

  69. Sometimes it feels like that.

  70. We're trying to do something that we really can't ever figure out a way to do.

  71. So when we're in chapter 5,

  72. the teacher, which we've identified as Solomon, the author of this book,

  73. says that as we come before God,

  74. how we come before Him matters almost just as much as that we come before Him,

  75. the manner in which we approach Him.

  76. So let's look in verse 1 of Ecclesiastes 5.

  77. As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut.

  78. Well, that sets a precedent right there.

  79. If we could all just do that,

  80. would we enter into the presence of God

  81. and keep our ears open and our mouth shut?

  82. Would we come together?

  83. If we keep our ears open and our mouth shut,

  84. we'd all be a whole lot better off.

  85. That doesn't mean you can't say good morning to somebody.

  86. That doesn't mean you can't engage in fellowship or lift up your voice in praise to God.

  87. But sometimes we're way too quick to close our ears and open our mouths,

  88. and the teacher is teaching us,

  89. let's try it a different way.

  90. As you come into the house of God,

  91. keep your ears open and your mouth shut.

  92. Then he goes on to say,

  93. it's evil to make mindless offerings to God.

  94. What is he saying?

  95. It's evil to make mindless offerings to God.

  96. That means don't be so quick

  97. to offer the sacrifice of praise to God

  98. if your heart is not in it.

  99. God despises when we praise him from our mouth,

  100. from our lips,

  101. and not our hearts.

  102. It's not praise to him.

  103. It's just noise.

  104. It would be far better

  105. to not sing the songs of praise

  106. that the church is lifting up

  107. if your heart is not in it.

  108. I've talked to Jared about this,

  109. and he hasn't done it yet

  110. because it's going to weird some people out, okay?

  111. But one of these times,

  112. we might try a deal where we say,

  113. listen, you don't have to stand.

  114. Everybody doesn't have to stand and sing.

  115. If you'd like to stand, you stand.

  116. But if you're not really in the heart space

  117. to stand and sing right now,

  118. let's all remain seated.

  119. And if at some point,

  120. the Spirit moves you to stand up

  121. and lift your praise from a standing position,

  122. that's fine.

  123. If you'd like to join in and sing,

  124. that's fine.

  125. If you'd like to just sit there,

  126. and pray,

  127. and reorient your heart

  128. back to listening to the Holy Spirit,

  129. maybe that's a good thing to do in this moment.

  130. We might try that one of these times

  131. and just see how that goes.

  132. I've attended services like that before,

  133. and it really moved me

  134. because sometimes,

  135. when we all just stand

  136. and do something together,

  137. it's like, man,

  138. if your heart's right, great.

  139. If it's not, tough luck,

  140. because this is what we're all doing right now.

  141. And it almost enables this false sacrifice of praise before God.

  142. Solomon is teaching us,

  143. it's evil to make mindless offerings to God.

  144. Just do it just to do it.

  145. Just because everybody else is doing it,

  146. it feels like you should.

  147. That's a mindless offering to God.

  148. Then he goes on and says,

  149. don't make rash promises,

  150. and don't be hasty in bringing matters before God.

  151. You sense a theme here?

  152. Make rash and hasty promises?

  153. Like, God, I swear,

  154. if you just do this for me,

  155. then I'll do this for you.

  156. Now, these things should come from the heart,

  157. not bargaining with God

  158. or making a desperate, rash, or hasty promise.

  159. He says, don't be hasty in bringing matters before God.

  160. Be intentional.

  161. Pray through it.

  162. Get your heart right first,

  163. and then pray through it.

  164. Settle yourself.

  165. Be quiet.

  166. Sit before God.

  167. He says, be still,

  168. and remember and know that I am God.

  169. After all, God is in heaven.

  170. You are here on earth,

  171. so let your words be few.

  172. If you read through Solomon's other famous writings

  173. in the Old Testament,

  174. specifically the Proverbs,

  175. how many times does he warn us

  176. and give us advice that we should be quiet

  177. and let our words be few?

  178. But what do we do?

  179. We mouth off.

  180. We like to talk.

  181. We love to get our opinion out there.

  182. And now we can get our opinion out there

  183. like never before

  184. through the miracle of the internet.

  185. Everybody can know what we're thinking.

  186. Everybody can know what we have to say

  187. about a certain thing.

  188. I'm not sure the world is better off

  189. with all of us having a voice

  190. in that way.

  191. You don't have to earn it anymore.

  192. You don't have to earn the platform.

  193. You can just go out there

  194. and broadcast it to the world.

  195. We don't always do that responsibly.

  196. We don't always do that from a place of wisdom.

  197. Solomon says,

  198. let your words be few.

  199. When God gives you something to say,

  200. say it.

  201. Otherwise, be quiet.

  202. We all need to take that advice to heart,

  203. especially in 2026.

  204. Then verse three,

  205. too much activity

  206. gives you restless dreams.

  207. Too many words

  208. make you a fool.

  209. So he's using a comparison here,

  210. an illustration.

  211. You go and you have a,

  212. you live a crazy life

  213. and you're out there

  214. doing all kinds of things.

  215. You're that

  216. are maybe out of the ordinary.

  217. Then your dreams

  218. might be a little crazier.

  219. You go and eat a bunch of Mexican food

  220. at Hefe's the night before.

  221. You might have some crazy dreams.

  222. I don't know what it is,

  223. but sometimes we find ourselves

  224. with funny dreams

  225. after we've done something

  226. along those lines.

  227. Then he says,

  228. just like that,

  229. too many words

  230. make you a fool.

  231. So he's using an illustration here.

  232. When you talk too much,

  233. the foolishness that's inside you

  234. has a far better chance

  235. of coming out.

  236. Guess what?

  237. We're all a fool.

  238. We all have foolishness in us.

  239. Not one of us is exempt

  240. from foolishness.

  241. I know we try to present ourselves

  242. that we are wisdom, wisdom, wisdom

  243. all the time,

  244. but the reality is

  245. foolishness is in there.

  246. And it's only by God's Holy Spirit

  247. that it doesn't come out.

  248. So let the Spirit prompt you

  249. when to talk,

  250. not your flesh.

  251. When your flesh does the prompting,

  252. foolishness is the result.

  253. So Solomon is giving us

  254. the same warning

  255. in different ways

  256. in the first three verses.

  257. Then he says,

  258. verse 4,

  259. when you make a promise to God,

  260. don't delay

  261. in following through,

  262. for God takes no pleasure

  263. in fools.

  264. When you make a promise to God,

  265. this goes back to,

  266. don't be hasty

  267. in bringing matters before God.

  268. Don't make mindless offerings to God.

  269. Be very intentional

  270. and very sober

  271. when you're dealing

  272. with Almighty God,

  273. the creator of the universe,

  274. the creator of you,

  275. the king of all kings,

  276. the lord of all lords.

  277. Respect him

  278. in your dealings with him.

  279. Now he's family.

  280. He is the father.

  281. If you're a child of God,

  282. you've made him

  283. your choice.

  284. You've offered yourself

  285. as a living sacrifice to God.

  286. Then he is your father.

  287. But he's your father.

  288. And you don't just treat him

  289. like somebody else

  290. that you would approach casually

  291. and not respect

  292. the awesome power

  293. that God has.

  294. So you come to him

  295. not with fear

  296. of what he might do to you,

  297. but out of respect

  298. for who he is

  299. and what he has done.

  300. And then it says

  301. when you make a promise to God,

  302. follow through with it

  303. and don't sit around and wait.

  304. You know how many times

  305. I've heard people say,

  306. I'm going to get saved

  307. saved.

  308. And if you're not sure

  309. about what that

  310. church kind of language means,

  311. it means placing your faith

  312. in Jesus

  313. to forgive your sins,

  314. make you his child,

  315. that he's the only way

  316. to be right with God.

  317. There's nothing you can do.

  318. So we call that

  319. getting saved.

  320. Saved from the punishment

  321. for our sins.

  322. Saved from

  323. a life without God.

  324. Saved from all of this

  325. apart from God.

  326. And now you get to have

  327. a relationship with God.

  328. So becoming God's child.

  329. So if you do this,

  330. how many times

  331. I've heard somebody say,

  332. yeah,

  333. I want to be God's child,

  334. but I'm not sure

  335. about getting baptized.

  336. And they'll delay for years.

  337. And if that's your story,

  338. I'm not shaking a finger at you

  339. or judging you

  340. or painting you

  341. in a negative light.

  342. I thank God

  343. because I've talked to people

  344. who've been years

  345. not being baptized.

  346. Then they said,

  347. you know what?

  348. It's time.

  349. Enough is enough.

  350. I'm going to go get baptized.

  351. And I'm thankful

  352. for the work God did

  353. in your heart

  354. to bring you

  355. to that place.

  356. But if you're holding off,

  357. then take that

  358. into consideration.

  359. Jesus set the example

  360. for us

  361. and he showed us

  362. how important baptism is

  363. in the life

  364. of a Jesus follower.

  365. He says,

  366. if you're going to be

  367. a follower of Jesus,

  368. this is what you do.

  369. We see that supported

  370. with the Ethiopian eunuch

  371. and Philip.

  372. There was a man

  373. who was steeped

  374. in religious knowledge

  375. and tradition

  376. and he had a high role

  377. in that

  378. and he knew the scriptures

  379. and he comes

  380. to the evangelist,

  381. Jesus follower Philip

  382. and he says,

  383. I want to follow Jesus.

  384. What should I do?

  385. And Philip said,

  386. you got to get baptized, man.

  387. This shows

  388. that you're serious about it.

  389. This shows

  390. that this is the life

  391. you're chosen.

  392. You are following

  393. the example of Jesus.

  394. This is what you do.

  395. This is one example

  396. of making a promise

  397. to God

  398. that says,

  399. I will follow you

  400. but then delaying

  401. actually following him.

  402. It's not that

  403. that's the only way

  404. to follow Jesus.

  405. There are many ways

  406. that you would follow Jesus

  407. in your life

  408. but that is an important one

  409. and that's what Jesus

  410. did himself

  411. and then said

  412. for us to do

  413. and it's part

  414. of the mission

  415. that he gave

  416. to his followers

  417. is go out,

  418. make disciples,

  419. baptize them,

  420. teach them

  421. what I've commanded you.

  422. So this is one example

  423. of making a promise

  424. to God

  425. and then delaying

  426. in following it through.

  427. So if that's you,

  428. then don't delay

  429. any longer.

  430. sit with God,

  431. get alone with God

  432. and say,

  433. God,

  434. I've been delaying

  435. too long.

  436. Give me the courage,

  437. give me the grace

  438. to follow your example

  439. in baptism.

  440. That's one way.

  441. What are other ways

  442. that maybe you've made

  443. a promise to God

  444. and you've been delaying

  445. in following through on it?

  446. keep all the promises

  447. you make to him.

  448. Verse five,

  449. it is better to say nothing

  450. than to make a promise

  451. and then not keep it.

  452. Verse six,

  453. don't let your mouth

  454. make you sin

  455. and don't defend yourself

  456. by telling the temple messenger

  457. that the promise you made

  458. was a mistake.

  459. Then you go back on it.

  460. Well,

  461. I wasn't really serious

  462. about it.

  463. I probably said that

  464. before I thought it through.

  465. Whatever the promise was,

  466. then we start hedging

  467. on it a little bit.

  468. We start backing up.

  469. We start backtracking.

  470. I'm not sure I really

  471. thought that one through.

  472. Meanwhile,

  473. God says,

  474. oh yes,

  475. you did.

  476. That was the right promise

  477. to make.

  478. That was the right decision

  479. that you made

  480. and now fear

  481. is getting in the way.

  482. Now uncertainty

  483. is getting in the way.

  484. Now reliance on yourself

  485. and not being sure

  486. that yourself

  487. can handle it.

  488. Remember,

  489. forgetting the fact

  490. that God is there

  491. to give you the strength.

  492. God is there

  493. to help you see this through

  494. and by his power

  495. and not yours,

  496. this decision

  497. will come

  498. to fruition.

  499. what you promised

  500. God can make reality

  501. but you can't start backtracking.

  502. So this is a powerful lesson

  503. that Solomon is teaching us.

  504. He says,

  505. that would make God

  506. backtracking,

  507. going back and saying

  508. the promise I made

  509. was a mistake.

  510. He said,

  511. that would make God angry

  512. and he might wipe out

  513. everything you have achieved.

  514. There are consequences

  515. consequences

  516. when we go back

  517. on our word

  518. with God.

  519. Does that mean

  520. God expects perfection

  521. from us every time?

  522. Of course not.

  523. He knows we're weak

  524. and he shows us grace.

  525. And remember,

  526. Solomon

  527. was living in this time

  528. before Jesus came,

  529. before he gave his life

  530. as the sacrifice

  531. for our sins.

  532. But there is a lesson here

  533. that you and I

  534. as the followers of Jesus,

  535. and I'm taking most of you

  536. at your word

  537. that you have chosen

  538. to be a follower of Jesus.

  539. Some of you may not be

  540. in that boat right now

  541. and that's okay.

  542. We're just glad you're here.

  543. We'd love to talk to you

  544. about what it means

  545. and how to become

  546. a follower of Jesus.

  547. So you come talk to me

  548. after the service,

  549. grab Jared,

  550. grab any of our deacons,

  551. just about anybody here

  552. and say,

  553. I would love to become

  554. a follower of Jesus

  555. and we'll get you

  556. on the right path.

  557. We'll take you to the scriptures

  558. and show you how to do that.

  559. But as the followers of Jesus,

  560. this is a powerful lesson

  561. that we need to learn.

  562. We need to take our promises

  563. to God seriously.

  564. We need to take the decisions

  565. we make before God seriously.

  566. Don't rush into them.

  567. Don't be hasty.

  568. Say, man,

  569. I'm in financial trouble

  570. so I need God

  571. to pour out the windows of,

  572. you know,

  573. the blessings

  574. from the windows of heaven

  575. and enrich my life

  576. because I'm hurting right now.

  577. So God,

  578. whatever you want from me,

  579. I'll do it, okay?

  580. Just hook me up

  581. with $100,000.

  582. We'll be okay.

  583. Now that is a hasty,

  584. irresponsible promise

  585. to make before God.

  586. It would be far better

  587. to not make that kind of promise

  588. and just say,

  589. God,

  590. my heart is open to you.

  591. You know the needs that I have.

  592. You know the situation I'm in

  593. that humanly speaking

  594. looks difficult

  595. or maybe even impossible.

  596. God,

  597. please work

  598. and show me

  599. what I need to do.

  600. This is what decisions

  601. or promises

  602. from the heart

  603. looks like.

  604. So there's a couple

  605. of truths here

  606. I want to share with you.

  607. First off,

  608. God is not impressed

  609. by performance,

  610. but he is honored

  611. by our listening.

  612. So taking our cue

  613. from what Solomon

  614. is teaching us

  615. in these first seven verses,

  616. God is not impressed

  617. by performance,

  618. but he is honored

  619. by our listening.

  620. So listen.

  621. So listen.

  622. Listen to God.

  623. Listen to God's voice.

  624. God's voice can come to us

  625. in surprising ways sometimes.

  626. Most often it comes

  627. from the Holy Spirit of God.

  628. It comes from Scripture,

  629. from this book right here.

  630. We live in an age

  631. where we can carry this book

  632. around with us everywhere.

  633. If you've got this phone with you,

  634. then you can have the Bible

  635. with you everywhere you go.

  636. But I encourage you

  637. to have one of these two.

  638. It's important.

  639. I like this one

  640. because it's got wide margins

  641. and you can write in it.

  642. But whatever works for you,

  643. get God's word

  644. and get in it.

  645. And then let the Holy Spirit

  646. enlighten you

  647. to what you're reading.

  648. It's called illumination,

  649. shining a light

  650. on what you're reading.

  651. Because anybody

  652. can pick up this book

  653. and they can come up

  654. with all the wrong ideas

  655. about what it's saying.

  656. And a lot of people do that.

  657. That's why you'll go on YouTube.

  658. Little rabbit trail here.

  659. If you get your theology

  660. from YouTube,

  661. it's a very dangerous place

  662. to get it.

  663. Not everyone who's on YouTube

  664. is doing it wrong,

  665. but a whole lot of them are.

  666. So get your theology

  667. first and foremost

  668. from the Holy Spirit of God,

  669. but then secondly,

  670. from the tried and true doctrine

  671. that's been passed down

  672. from faith to faith,

  673. from generation to generation,

  674. from true Jesus followers

  675. whose fruit backs up

  676. what they're saying.

  677. I don't care.

  678. Talk is cheap.

  679. Hey, verse 7.

  680. Look with me.

  681. Ecclesiastes 5, 7.

  682. Talk is cheap

  683. like daydreams

  684. and other useless activities

  685. like scrolling YouTube

  686. to figure out what you believe.

  687. Fear God instead.

  688. Solomon was before his time, man.

  689. No, I think human nature

  690. just hasn't changed that much.

  691. If they didn't have YouTube,

  692. then they had something else.

  693. Talk is cheap,

  694. but I want to see

  695. what kind of fruit

  696. your life bears out

  697. with all the talk that you do.

  698. Some of these people

  699. that will get on there

  700. and come up with these wild ideas

  701. that are so different

  702. than anything you've heard before

  703. about God or anything else,

  704. oftentimes,

  705. usually,

  706. the fruit of their life

  707. does not back up

  708. what they're saying.

  709. Say,

  710. that's interesting

  711. what you're talking about.

  712. All the conspiracy theories

  713. or, you know,

  714. whatever,

  715. new illumination,

  716. new truth.

  717. Say, you know,

  718. I'm not really going to give you

  719. the time of day

  720. because I don't see

  721. the fruit of the Holy Spirit

  722. in your life.

  723. That's often

  724. the first litmus test

  725. that we can put

  726. against things

  727. that we see online.

  728. Far often,

  729. instead of talking so much,

  730. we need to stop

  731. and listen

  732. to what God

  733. might be teaching us.

  734. So,

  735. content creators

  736. or whatever other kind

  737. of performers

  738. are out there,

  739. I want to see

  740. how much you're listening

  741. to God

  742. and what He's doing

  743. through you that way,

  744. not by what you perform.

  745. But let's bring it home

  746. to Henrietta

  747. and First Baptist Church.

  748. God is not impressed

  749. by how many weeks

  750. in a row

  751. you've been sitting

  752. in the pew

  753. on Sunday.

  754. I am.

  755. I think it's great

  756. when you're here.

  757. I hate it

  758. when you're not,

  759. even though sometimes,

  760. you know,

  761. I get four Sundays a year.

  762. I've never taken

  763. all four Sundays a year

  764. that I'm not here.

  765. But we all have times

  766. when we're out of town

  767. or we're sick

  768. or something like that.

  769. Somebody got baptized

  770. in another church recently

  771. and some of our people

  772. were up there.

  773. I think that was

  774. really, really cool.

  775. So, I understand

  776. why you can't be here

  777. sometimes.

  778. But it impresses me

  779. when you're here.

  780. That's great.

  781. I love it.

  782. You know why that is?

  783. Because man looks

  784. on the outward appearance

  785. but God looks

  786. on the what?

  787. Yeah, y'all know.

  788. God looks on the heart.

  789. So, he's honored

  790. when we listen to him

  791. from our hearts

  792. far more

  793. than when we perform

  794. for him.

  795. So, you might have been

  796. teaching your Sunday school

  797. class for a long time

  798. and I'm so thankful

  799. you're doing that.

  800. And there's a lot of kids

  801. who are thankful

  802. you're doing that

  803. and parents probably

  804. who are even more thankful

  805. that you're doing that.

  806. But far more

  807. than your performance

  808. for God,

  809. he's impressed

  810. by how much

  811. you're listening to him

  812. as you prepare

  813. to teach that class.

  814. As you prepare

  815. to handle those children.

  816. Same thing

  817. in the school teachers.

  818. Same thing

  819. with our administration.

  820. Same thing

  821. with you

  822. and your workplace.

  823. God's not so impressed

  824. with how you perform

  825. as to the heart

  826. motivations behind it.

  827. The heart motivations

  828. only change

  829. by listening

  830. to the Holy Spirit

  831. of God.

  832. You and I

  833. are not wired

  834. to do things

  835. for God

  836. from the heart.

  837. We're wired

  838. to perform.

  839. So, we have to let

  840. the Holy Spirit

  841. change our wiring.

  842. Change our internal

  843. whatever you call it.

  844. Dits and dashes

  845. and zeros

  846. and numbers.

  847. DNA.

  848. There you go.

  849. That was a terrible

  850. explanation of DNA.

  851. We got there eventually.

  852. God literally

  853. has to change

  854. our DNA.

  855. You know what it's called?

  856. It's called regeneration.

  857. He changes the way

  858. we're made up.

  859. Say,

  860. well, that's just

  861. who I am.

  862. God made me this way.

  863. God wants to make you new.

  864. God wants to remake you.

  865. We have to listen

  866. to His Holy Spirit.

  867. Listening is better

  868. than offering

  869. the sacrifice of fools.

  870. The teacher's not

  871. anti-worship.

  872. He's not even

  873. anti-performance

  874. if the performance

  875. comes

  876. from a place

  877. of the heart.

  878. I saw teenagers

  879. up here

  880. practicing this morning

  881. and then they got up here

  882. and sang.

  883. They performed

  884. and they performed

  885. beautifully.

  886. And I know

  887. that many of them

  888. and I hope all of them

  889. were singing

  890. from their heart.

  891. I've seen Jessica

  892. in the way she

  893. pours herself

  894. into these

  895. performances.

  896. I know she's doing it

  897. from the heart

  898. because otherwise

  899. she would have quit

  900. a long time ago.

  901. And I'm so grateful

  902. when our hearts

  903. then produce

  904. a performance

  905. on God's behalf.

  906. When you go out

  907. and perform

  908. a good work

  909. for someone,

  910. let it come

  911. from a time

  912. of listening

  913. to God

  914. and His Spirit.

  915. Not from this

  916. need to perform

  917. or need to impress

  918. or need to scratch

  919. your itch

  920. or make you feel

  921. better about yourself.

  922. The motivation

  923. from the heart

  924. is the key.

  925. Habakkuk.

  926. We don't go to Habakkuk

  927. very often, do we?

  928. Well, here's one.

  929. The Lord is in His

  930. holy temple.

  931. Let all the earth

  932. be,

  933. what's that?

  934. Silent

  935. before Him.

  936. This is a consistent

  937. theme throughout Scripture.

  938. Let's be silent

  939. before God.

  940. Let's let Him

  941. speak to us

  942. before we hurry up

  943. and get busy

  944. and get loud

  945. before Him.

  946. Then in Isaiah

    Isaiah 30 chapter mention

  947. chapter 30,

  948. that's supposed

  949. to say 30,

  950. not 3.

  951. In quietness

  952. and confidence

  953. is your strength.

  954. In quietness

  955. and confidence

  956. is your strength.

  957. Not in loudness,

  958. confidence

  959. in who?

  960. One person

  961. said God.

  962. Confidence

  963. in who,

  964. church?

  965. God.

  966. Confidence

  967. in God,

  968. not yourself.

  969. Paul understood

  970. this.

  971. He said,

  972. I don't have

  973. any confidence

  974. in my own flesh.

  975. I could,

  976. and he even

  977. made the point,

  978. if anybody

  979. could have

  980. confidence

  981. in themselves

  982. and what they

  983. could achieve

  984. on their own,

  985. it would be me.

  986. Trust me.

  987. It's not,

  988. Paul was teaching

  989. us,

  990. he said,

  991. it's not that

  992. I couldn't achieve

  993. anything on my own.

  994. He said,

  995. don't get this idea

  996. that I chose ministry

  997. because I wasn't

  998. good at anything else.

  999. He said,

1000. that's not what it was.

1001. I chose to follow Jesus

  1002. and give my life

  1003. to him

  1004. because God

  1005. changed me,

  1006. not because it was

  1007. my best option

  1008. in life

  1009. as a career.

  1010. He said,

  1011. I have the ability

  1012. to be confident

  1013. in myself,

  1014. but I've learned

  1015. that that's not

  1016. going to get me

  1017. anywhere.

  1018. Meaningful.

  1019. So I've learned

  1020. that when I'm weak,

  1021. then God

  1022. is strong in me,

  1023. through me.

  1024. So,

  1025. in quietness

  1026. and confidence

  1027. in the Lord,

  1028. that's where you

  1029. find your strength.

  1030. So if you're not

  1031. always feeling strong,

  1032. if you're not always

1033. on top of your game,

  1034. by the way,

  1035. when you are

  1036. feeling strong,

  1037. often that's an illusion.

  1038. When you do think

  1039. you're on top

  1040. of your game,

  1041. just wait

  1042. until you turn

  1043. the corner

1044. and life hits you again.

  1045. So regardless

  1046. of whether you're up

  1047. or whether you're down,

  1048. in quietness

  1049. and confidence

  1050. in Christ,

  1051. that's where

  1052. your strength

  1053. is found.

  1054. So here's our takeaway.

  1055. Attention

  1056. honors God

  1057. more than activity.

  1058. Attention

  1059. to God

  1060. honors God

  1061. more than activity.

  1062. How many of you

  1063. your kids

  1064. like your attention?

  1065. Anybody?

  1066. Slip your hand up

  1067. if your kids

  1068. like your attention.

  1069. I'm noticing

  1070. a theme.

  1071. It's the younger kids.

  1072. Once they hit

  1073. teenage years,

  1074. they don't want

  1075. your attention anymore,

  1076. right?

  1077. That's how it is.

  1078. So think of us

  1079. as little kids.

  1080. We want God's attention,

  1081. right?

  1082. You know what

  1083. the crazy thing is?

  1084. You know what

  1085. God wants from us?

  1086. Our attention.

  1087. How many of you

  1088. parents want

  1089. your kids' attention?

  1090. Anybody?

  1091. How many of you

  1092. would love

  1093. for your teenagers

  1094. to give you

  1095. attention again?

  1096. Yeah.

  1097. God craves

  1098. our attention

  1099. more than anything

  1100. because if our minds

  1101. are fixed on him,

  1102. he can teach us.

  1103. He can help us.

  1104. He can guide us.

  1105. He can change us.

1106. We've got to give him

  1107. our attention

  1108. far more

  1109. than our activity.

  1110. Sometimes we're so busy

  1111. working for God,

  1112. we forget to actually

  1113. talk to him.

  1114. We forget to actually

  1115. listen to him.

  1116. Number two,

  1117. peace comes.

  1118. This thing's bouncing

  1119. all over the place.

  1120. Here we go.

  1121. Peace comes from

  1122. trusting God,

  1123. not managing him.

  1124. How many of you

  1125. are guilty?

  1126. Don't raise your hand

  1127. right now.

  1128. How many of you

  1129. are guilty

  1130. of managing God?

  1131. I'll raise mine

1132. because I have done that.

  1133. I have tried

  1134. to manage God.

1135. as long as I do

  1136. this and this

  1137. and this,

  1138. God will be satisfied

  1139. and I can go

  1140. about my life.

  1141. We're managing him

  1142. like he's a difficult

  1143. parent

  1144. or a difficult client.

  1145. We're managing him.

1146. Got to keep God satisfied.

1147. Got to keep God okay

  1148. so he doesn't

  1149. complicate my life.

  1150. Peace comes

  1151. from trusting God.

  1152. Not managing him.

  1153. Turning over the keys.

  1154. This is a theme

  1155. that Solomon

  1156. is teaching us

  1157. in Ecclesiastes 5.

  1158. It moves from

  1159. our words

  1160. to our posture.

  1161. Our heart posture.

  1162. It says,

1163. when you make a promise

  1164. to God,

  1165. don't delay.

  1166. You fear God.

  1167. The issue

  1168. is not commitment

  1169. on our part.

  1170. It's giving up control.

  1171. We don't make vows

  1172. to God

  1173. because God

  1174. needs reassurance.

  1175. He doesn't need

  1176. to be managed

  1177. by us.

  1178. That's not the purpose

  1179. behind making promises

  1180. to God

  1181. or decisions

  1182. before God.

  1183. It's not that God

  1184. needs to be reassured

  1185. that we love him

  1186. and it's all going

  1187. to be okay.

  1188. It's the opposite.

1189. We need to be reminded

  1190. that he loves us

  1191. and he's going to

  1192. help it be okay

1193. if we stay in tune

  1194. with him.

  1195. We make these vows

  1196. and promises

  1197. often,

  1198. unfortunately,

  1199. because we want leverage.

  1200. we bargain,

  1201. we negotiate,

  1202. we promise

  1203. future obedience

  1204. in exchange

  1205. for present blessings

  1206. or relief.

  1207. How silly is that?

  1208. How pointless is that?

  1209. So Ecclesiastes,

  1210. Solomon,

  1211. the teacher,

  1212. invites us

  1213. into something better,

  1214. a faith

  1215. that rests

  1216. instead of manages.

  1217. A reverence

  1218. before God

  1219. that releases

  1220. the illusion

  1221. of needing

  1222. to be in control

  1223. and a humility

  1224. that lets God

  1225. be God.

  1226. Jesus

  1227. tells a story

  1228. about this.

  1229. Would you turn

  1230. to Luke chapter 18?

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1231. Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1232. We'll be done

  1233. in just a moment

  1234. but before we're done

  1235. I want to share

  1236. this with you.

  1237. Now keep a finger

  1238. in Luke 18

  1239. because we're

  1240. going to go there

  1241. and then go back

  1242. to Micah

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  1243. chapter 6.

  1244. Go back

  1245. a few pages,

  1246. Mark,

  1247. Matthew

  1248. and then keep

  1249. going back.

  1250. You see Malachi,

  1251. you see some

  1252. of these minor prophets,

  1253. Zechariah,

  1254. Haggai,

  1255. then go back

  1256. to Micah.

  1257. Micah chapter 6

    Micah 6:6

  1258. verse 6.

  1259. Keep a finger

  1260. in Luke 18,

  1261. we're going to be

1262. there in just a second.

  1263. Micah 6

    Micah 6:6

  1264. verse 6.

  1265. What can we bring

  1266. to the Lord?

  1267. Should we bring

  1268. him burnt offerings?

  1269. Should we bow

  1270. before God

  1271. the Most High

  1272. with offerings

  1273. of yearling calves?

  1274. Should we offer

  1275. him thousands

  1276. of rams

  1277. and tens

  1278. of thousands

  1279. of rivers

  1280. of olive oil?

  1281. Should we sacrifice

  1282. our firstborn children

1283. to pay for our sins?

  1284. What does he want?

  1285. What does he want

  1286. from us?

  1287. Does he want

  1288. all our money?

  1289. Does he want

  1290. our bank accounts?

  1291. Does he want

  1292. our times?

  1293. Does he want

  1294. our volunteering

  1295. in the church?

  1296. Does he want

  1297. us to sit up

  1298. there on the deck

  1299. and struggle

  1300. with that system

  1301. up there

  1302. trying to make

  1303. everything sound

  1304. good and the slides

  1305. and all that stuff?

  1306. Does he want

  1307. us to get up

  1308. and sing in front

  1309. of the choir

  1310. even though we

  1311. don't like being

  1312. in front of people?

  1313. What does he want

  1314. from us?

1315. It's kind of the point.

  1316. Ooh, I like it.

  1317. Good job, Bo.

  1318. Bo jumped in there

  1319. and said our heart.

  1320. That's good.

  1321. Okay, let's see

  1322. what he says.

  1323. Verse 8.

1324. To do what is right,

  1325. to love mercy,

  1326. to walk humbly

  1327. with your God.

  1328. Fear the Lord

  1329. if you are wise.

1330. To do what is right,

  1331. to walk humbly,

  1332. to love mercy,

  1333. to walk humbly

  1334. with your God.

1335. That is a heart posture.

  1336. You cannot accomplish

  1337. those things.

  1338. Without giving him

  1339. your heart.

  1340. So what he wants

  1341. from you

  1342. is your heart.

  1343. It's your desires.

  1344. It's your motivations.

  1345. It's the why.

  1346. He wants the why.

1347. Now go to Luke 18.

  1348. Hopefully you've

  1349. got a finger there.

  1350. If not,

  1351. you've got to hurry

  1352. and turn there

  1353. because we're already there.

  1354. Luke 18, verse 9.

    Luke 18:9

  1355. Here we go.

  1356. Then Jesus told

  1357. this story to some

  1358. who had great confidence

  1359. in their own righteousness.

  1360. There's nobody

  1361. in this room

  1362. that has great confidence

  1363. in your own righteousness.

  1364. Right?

  1365. Again,

  1366. don't raise your hand.

1367. Just look in your own heart.

  1368. These were the Pharisees.

  1369. They scorned everyone else.

  1370. So he teaches them

  1371. something through this story.

  1372. He says,

  1373. two men went into

  1374. the temple to pray.

  1375. One was a Pharisee.

  1376. The other was

  1377. a despised tax collector.

  1378. Boy,

  1379. you couldn't get

  1380. more despised

  1381. or lower

  1382. in that society

  1383. than tax collector.

  1384. Everybody hated that guy.

1385. He was working on behalf

  1386. of the Romans.

  1387. He was the scourge

  1388. of their existence.

  1389. He was the one

  1390. who was the physical

  1391. manifestation

  1392. of everything

  1393. they hated about Rome,

  1394. collecting taxes

  1395. that they thought

  1396. were unfair

  1397. and shouldn't have

  1398. to be paid.

  1399. So this guy

  1400. is the despised

  1401. tax collector.

1402. The other is at the

  1403. opposite end

  1404. of the social spectrum.

  1405. You couldn't get

  1406. more respected

  1407. and revered

  1408. than a Pharisee.

  1409. She got two guys

  1410. going into the temple

  1411. to pray.

  1412. The Pharisee stood

  1413. by himself

  1414. and prayed this prayer.

  1415. I thank you, God.

  1416. That's my fancy voice.

  1417. That I am not

  1418. like these other people.

  1419. And I imagine

  1420. he's kind of

  1421. cocking his head

  1422. over that way

  1423. like this tax collector

  1424. guy over here.

  1425. Cheaters,

  1426. sinners,

  1427. adulterers.

  1428. I'm certainly

  1429. not like that

  1430. tax collector.

  1431. He literally

  1432. calls the guy out

  1433. during his prayer.

  1434. He thought

  1435. that one

  1436. was getting

  1437. through to God.

  1438. I think that was

  1439. bouncing on the roof.

  1440. It wasn't going

  1441. up to heaven.

  1442. I fast twice a week.

  1443. I give you,

  1444. oh God,

1445. a tenth of my income.

  1446. And I imagine

1447. he went on and on

1448. and Jesus had the mercy

  1449. to not give us

  1450. the whole prayer here.

  1451. But the tax collector

  1452. stood at a distance.

  1453. He dared not even

  1454. lift his eyes

  1455. to heaven.

  1456. He didn't feel worthy.

  1457. To lift his eyes

  1458. up to heaven

  1459. as he prayed.

  1460. Instead,

  1461. he beat his chest

  1462. in sorrow.

  1463. Now,

  1464. I don't think

  1465. he's doing

  1466. like gorilla style.

  1467. Okay?

  1468. Back then,

  1469. different culture,

  1470. right?

  1471. But what we can

  1472. take away from this

  1473. is he was sorrowful.

  1474. He felt terrible.

  1475. He felt unworthy.

1476. Felt like he was wrong

1477. and he was a sinner.

  1478. And he says,

  1479. oh God,

  1480. be merciful to me,

  1481. a sinner.

  1482. That was it.

  1483. It's the extent

  1484. of his prayer.

  1485. God,

1486. please just show me mercy.

  1487. I'm a sinner.

  1488. I've done terrible things.

  1489. Please show me mercy.

  1490. Jesus says,

  1491. I tell you,

  1492. this sinner,

  1493. not the Pharisee,

  1494. returned home

  1495. justified before God.

  1496. What does he mean

  1497. by justified?

  1498. Made right.

  1499. He was made right

  1500. before God.

  1501. The guy who was

  1502. the sinner,

  1503. not the quote,

  1504. quote,

  1505. righteous man.

  1506. For those who

  1507. exalt themselves

  1508. will be humbled.

  1509. And those who

  1510. humble themselves

  1511. will be exalted.

  1512. Can I repeat that

  1513. to you, church?

  1514. If you exalt yourself,

  1515. God will humble you.

  1516. If you humble yourself,

1517. then God can exalt you.

  1518. If I exalt myself,

  1519. God has humbled me.

  1520. When I've humbled myself,

  1521. God's often chosen

  1522. to exalt me.

1523. He does that for all of us.

  1524. I know that's the testimony

1525. that many of you share.

1526. You know the greatest example

  1527. of this?

  1528. Jesus humbled himself.

  1529. Took on the form

  1530. of a servant.

1531. Was made in the likeness

  1532. of men.

  1533. Common,

  1534. lowly,

  1535. sinful men.

1536. And at the right time,

  1537. God

  1538. lifted him up

  1539. and set him

  1540. on the right hand

1541. of the throne of God.

  1542. And he says,

  1543. someday,

  1544. every knee

1545. of all those sinful men

  1546. and women,

  1547. every knee will bow

  1548. and every tongue

  1549. will confess

  1550. that Jesus,

1551. the one who humbled himself,

1552. he is Lord over all.

  1553. He set the example

  1554. and he says,

  1555. this is the rule

  1556. in my kingdom.

  1557. You humble yourself

1558. and then I can exalt you.

  1559. So,

1560. this is where we're finishing.

  1561. Peace begins

  1562. where self-importance ends.

  1563. Peace begins

  1564. where self-importance ends.

  1565. You can't keep up

  1566. appearances enough.

  1567. You're not good enough

  1568. to be flawless.

1569. And if you want people

1570. to be drawn to you

1571. because of how important you are

1572. or how righteous you are

1573. or how good you are,

  1574. you're not good enough.

  1575. You are flawed.

  1576. You'll never keep up

  1577. the illusion long enough.

  1578. You can't.

  1579. God says,

  1580. I can make you

  1581. truly righteous.

  1582. I can make it

  1583. not an illusion.

1584. I can make it real.

1585. But you gotta humble yourself.

1586. You gotta turn to me

  1587. from your heart.

  1588. You gotta listen

  1589. to my voice

  1590. and my spirit

1591. and let me change you

  1592. from the inside.

  1593. I wanna share a quote

  1594. with you

  1595. by Blaise Pascal.

  1596. He said,

  1597. all of humanity's problems,

  1598. this was back

  1599. in the 1600s,

  1600. by the way.

  1601. There was another guy

1602. who was before his time.

  1603. He said,

  1604. all of humanity's problems

  1605. stem from man's inability

  1606. to sit quietly

  1607. in a room alone.

  1608. Now,

  1609. I don't know about

  1610. all of humanity's problems,

1611. but I think he understood

1612. that this was a problem

  1613. even back then.

1614. We have a hard time

  1615. sitting quietly

  1616. in a room alone.

  1617. And I think

  1618. our modern day adaptation

  1619. of that

  1620. is alone

  1621. without the outside world

  1622. available

  1623. at our fingertips.

  1624. Alone without this.

  1625. How many times

  1626. do I find myself

  1627. with a moment's

  1628. peace and quiet

1629. and what do I do?

1630. I pull this out immediately.

1631. Gotta check what's going on.

  1632. Gotta check my emails.

  1633. Check the social medias.

  1634. Check whatever's going on.

  1635. Gotta be informed.

1636. Gotta stay up on everything.

1637. And this can be a blessing.

1638. It can be a blessing

  1639. to be informed,

1640. to know what's going on.

1641. But we've lost the ability

  1642. to sit quietly alone.

  1643. You know what happens

1644. to the follower of Christ

1645. when you sit quietly alone?

  1646. God has space

  1647. to speak to you.

1648. He's got your attention now.

  1649. He can cut through

  1650. because there's nothing else

  1651. competing for his voice.

1652. So how do we become

  1653. a listening church?

1654. First, we gotta slow down.

1655. Then we gotta quiet down.

1656. Then we've gotta open up.

1657. What do we mean by this?

1658. We gotta slow our bodies.

  1659. Physically,

1660. you might need to slow down.

1661. You might be doing too much.

1662. Your schedule might be too full.

1663. If you never have any time

  1664. to sit quietly,

  1665. you're too busy.

  1666. So you may need

  1667. to physically slow down.

  1668. Two,

1669. you need to quiet your mind.

  1670. That's a discipline.

  1671. It takes practice.

  1672. It takes years.

  1673. Truly,

  1674. I'm in the middle

  1675. of practicing that.

  1676. I'll let you know

1677. when I've finally gotten there.

1678. But I'm working on it

1679. and you need to work on it with me.

1680. We all need to work

  1681. on quieting our minds.

  1682. And then thirdly,

1683. we need to open our hearts.

  1684. Open our hearts.

  1685. Open our minds.

  1686. God might be ready

  1687. to change our mind

  1688. on something.

  1689. Romans 12,

1690. we say it like every other Sunday.

  1691. God is changing

  1692. the way we think.

  1693. So slow the body.

  1694. Quiet the mind.

  1695. Open the heart.

  1696. Peace begins

  1697. where self-importance ends.

  1698. That progression

  1699. is exactly right.

  1700. It's got to start

  1701. with our body.

1702. Then it goes to our mind.

  1703. And then our hearts

  1704. become open.

  1705. And the Holy Spirit

  1706. can speak to us.

1707. This is how we live

  1708. under the sun.

  1709. What makes us different

  1710. from anybody else?

1711. The same sun shines down

  1712. on all of us.

1713. So how can our lives

  1714. be different?

  1715. How can they be

  1716. more peaceful?

  1717. More full of joy?

  1718. More full of hope?

1719. More able to bless others?

  1720. How can we

1721. as the people of God

  1722. be any different?

1723. It's by slowing the body,

  1724. quieting the mind,

  1725. open the heart.

  1726. Lift our eyes

  1727. toward heaven

  1728. above the sun.

1729. And that's how we do it.

  1730. That's what we've been

  1731. saying every week.

1732. Let's say it again, church.

  1733. Ready?

  1734. How do we live

  1735. under the sun?

1736. We look above the sun.

  1737. Let's pray.

1738. God, that's what we want

1739. you to do right now

1740. as we lift our eyes

  1741. to you.

  1742. We can't be distracted

  1743. by anything else

  1744. under this sun

  1745. and everything is competing

  1746. to distract us.

1747. So I pray that we would

  1748. quiet our minds,

1749. that we would slow down,

1750. that we would sit still,

  1751. that we would learn

  1752. how to sit quietly

  1753. and listen to you

  1754. instead of just

  1755. constantly running

  1756. or constantly doing

  1757. or constantly performing

  1758. or constantly talking,

  1759. that we would learn

  1760. to sit quietly

  1761. and listen.

1762. Make us a listening church,

  1763. listening families.

  1764. Relationships are saved

  1765. or restored

  1766. because often

  1767. listening comes back.

  1768. Communications is important,

  1769. but listening is even

  1770. more important.

1771. As the music begins to play,

1772. would you listen right now?

1773. God, we open our hearts to you.

1774. We open our ears to you.

1775. You speak to us right now, Lord.

  1776. In our words,

  1777. in our worship,

1778. we want to honor you.

  1779. In our hearts,

  1780. we turn to you.

1781. We lift our eyes above the sun

1782. to the sun of God.

  1783. Amen.
