  1. He is risen.

  2. He is risen indeed.

  3. Yes, He is.

  4. If you didn't know the answer to that, that's all right.

  5. You could just be glad He is risen.

  6. But that comes from an old Christian tradition.

  7. Man, back in the old days,

  8. if you believed that Jesus really did rise from the dead,

  9. you were a radical.

  10. People would look at you like you're crazy.

  11. Now, the followers of Jesus span the entire globe,

  12. all around the world.

  13. And this morning, in all continents across this entire earth,

  14. people are gathered together,

  15. and they're celebrating the fact

  16. that death could not conquer Jesus Christ.

  17. So we're excited about that.

  18. My name is Sam Benal.

  19. I'm the pastor here.

  20. If I haven't gotten to meet you yet, I'd love to do that.

  21. I will be sticking around.

  22. I would say my wife and I, she's home with our sick kid.

  23. The devil was already fighting.

  24. He wanted to keep one of us home.

  25. But listen, I'd love to meet you after the service.

  26. If I haven't gotten to do that yet.

  27. But there's a little thing in each of your pews,

  28. a little paper here that shows you what we have coming up this spring,

  29. as well as our weekly worship schedule.

  30. We'd love for you to take that home,

  31. or if you know someone that could use that and pass it along.

  32. How many of you can imagine waking up in the morning at your usual time?

  33. I'm not going to ask what time you get up.

  34. We've probably got anything from early, early morning hours to a little bit later,

  35. depending on the stage of life and your circumstances.

  36. But whatever time you usually get up,

  37. you wake up,

  38. and it stays dark outside.

  39. How many of you would enjoy that?

  40. How many of you depend on the sun coming at you?

  41. Yeah, Clayton raised his hand.

  42. I would love that.

  43. It means you can go back to sleep, right?

  44. Look, summer break's coming, man.

  45. You'll be able to sleep in a little bit, probably.

  46. Look, we depend sometimes on the sun coming in.

  47. Maybe some of you depend on the sun coming in to get up.

  48. I've got kids in school, so, you know, we wake up before the sun comes up.

  49. But that's all right.

  50. How many of you have been in a part of the world

  51. where there is a period of polar darkness?

  52. Anybody?

  53. Anybody?

  54. Yeah.

  55. There's one, two, just a few of you.

  56. Not a whole lot.

  57. How many of you are aware that there are certain parts

  58. of the far northern part of our globe

  59. where the darkness, for a period of time,

  60. is either 24 hours a day or nearly 24 hours a day?

  61. You're aware of that?

  62. It's depressing.

  63. It's depressing.

  64. We don't realize how much we need the sun

  65. and how perfectly God made it to where we depend on the sun.

  66. Our world depends on the sun.

  67. Be weird.

  68. You woke up, the clock says it's 7 o'clock in the morning,

  69. it's still dark outside.

  70. 9 o'clock in the morning, it's still dark outside.

  71. Noon, 2 o'clock, 3.30, kids get out of school,

  72. it's still dark outside.

  73. How many of you kids would love having recess in the dark?

  74. You might have fun at first, but eventually you'd get pretty old.

  75. The teachers would not love the liability and the injuries

  76. that would happen with recess in the dark.

  77. Being in the darkness is not fun.

  78. Can be for a little bit.

  79. Can be here and there.

  80. But man, would that get old quickly.

  81. We need that sunlight.

  82. Back when I was a youth pastor, we live in northern Nevada

  83. and I'd led a missions trip up to Alaska

  84. and we visited during a time of year

  85. when it was almost all sunlight all the time.

  86. I took a picture, it was midnight outside

  87. and it was broad daylight.

  88. Midnight and broad daylight outside.

  89. Just the weirdest thing.

  90. Of course, you gotta take advantage of blackout curtains

  91. in those times when you're trying to go to sleep.

  92. But then there is the other time of year

  93. and they said, listen, you enjoy it right now.

  94. It's fun.

  95. But it's not fun when the darkness comes

  96. and it stays.

  97. And sometimes in the far northern reaches of Alaska,

  98. they'll go more than two months in a row

  99. without any sunlight

  100. or very, very little sunlight at all.

  101. So just imagine that.

  102. Put your head there a little bit on Easter morning.

  103. Can you imagine living day after day in darkness?

  104. You'd have to adjust your life to it.

  105. You'd have to rely on manufactured light

  106. as you see here

  107. just to be able to get around.

  108. Into that kind of darkness,

  109. that level of darkness,

  110. Jesus came.

  111. That was the level of spiritual darkness

  112. the world had been trapped in

  113. since the fall of man.

  114. If you've been around church for any length of time,

  115. you've probably heard about the Garden of Eden,

  116. Adam and Eve,

  117. the first man and the first woman

  118. and how Satan seduced them

  119. with the promise of power

  120. and knowledge equal to God

  121. and they believed his lies

  122. and they sinned against God.

  123. And from then on,

  124. the world was plunged into darkness,

  125. spiritual darkness.

  126. They could not see

  127. beyond their own understanding.

  128. So limited.

  129. They couldn't understand.

  130. And God would promise

  131. little bits and pieces of the future.

  132. He would say,

  133. I'm going to send a rescuer.

  134. I'm going to help you.

  135. There's going to be a way out.

  136. But you have to believe.

  137. You have to have this thing

  138. we call faith.

  139. That's what the people

  140. who lived before the coming of Jesus,

  141. all they had to hold on to

  142. was this little thing called faith.

  143. Just little points of light

  144. that would appear.

  145. God might appear to his people

  146. just for a moment.

  147. God might speak through his prophets

  148. in the Old Testament

  149. in increasingly obscure ways

  150. and it was hard to always understand

  151. exactly what they were talking about.

  152. It didn't all line up

  153. until God himself came down.

  154. We talk about it at Christmastime.

  155. I think Christmas and Easter

  156. are inextricably linked.

  157. You can't separate them.

  158. My mom always likes to talk about Easter

  159. and sing Easter songs at Christmastime

  160. and then she likes to talk about Christmas

  161. and sing Christmas songs at Easter time.

  162. But I get it

  163. because they're very connected.

  164. It's all part of the story.

  165. So you go back

  166. to how it began

  167. then you go back

  168. to not how it ended

  169. but how our hope

  170. then began.

  171. And you've been hearing this story read

  172. in little bits and pieces

  173. from the young

  174. all the way up to adults

  175. from the word of God

  176. about how Jesus came

  177. and what he endured

  178. at the hands of mankind.

  179. So, number one,

  180. before we get there,

  181. if you'd like to take any notes

  182. there's a spot in your bulletin

  183. to do that.

  184. If not, if you just want to listen

  185. that's absolutely fine.

  186. But I want to share this quote with you.

  187. We're all stumbling in the dark

  188. and that makes for some pretty

  189. interesting collisions.

  190. Think about that.

  191. You and I are all stumbling around

  192. in the darkness.

  193. Spiritually speaking,

  194. we're all stumbling around.

  195. Except for the light

  196. of the Holy Spirit of God,

  197. we can't see clearly.

  198. So God's Holy Spirit

  199. has to give us that light.

  200. He has to pull the veil

  201. away from our eyes.

  202. And until he does that,

  203. we stumble around

  204. and we smack into each other.

  205. And then you've got wars

  206. and you've got strivings

  207. and you've got fightings

  208. and you've got disagreements

  209. and you've got greed

  210. and jealousy and anger

  211. and all these things

  212. that come from people

  213. stumbling around in the dark.

  214. So this was the world,

  215. get that in your head,

  216. this picture,

  217. this was the world

  218. that Jesus came into.

  219. It was utter darkness.

  220. We could turn the lights off

  221. in this room,

  222. but we've got this stained glass

  223. and we've got the windows

  224. where natural light

  225. would come in.

  226. But can you imagine

  227. if it was the dead of night

  228. and then we turned off

  229. all the lights?

  230. It would be hard

  231. to get around.

  232. It would be hard

  233. to get out of your pew probably.

  234. It would be stumbling

  235. all over each other.

  236. It would be mass chaos

  237. in here

  238. and the fire marshal

  239. would take us to court

  240. or something.

  241. Wouldn't be good.

  242. But this is Jesus'

  243. solution.

  244. Jesus brings the light.

  245. So number one,

  246. Jesus is God's light

  247. in darkness.

  248. This is not anything profound,

  249. but I hope that you can

  250. wrap your head around it

  251. and begin to have faith

  252. in this statement

  253. that Jesus is God's light

  254. in the darkness.

  255. John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  256. we read about exactly

  257. how he triumphed over death.

  258. You've heard little bits

  259. and pieces,

  260. but in John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  261. actually, you know what?

  262. I'm going to go to Luke 24.

  263. So if you were in John 20,

  264. that's okay.

  265. Flip over,

  266. flip back one book

  267. and let's go to Luke 24.

  268. Very early on Sunday morning,

  269. the women went to the tomb

  270. taking the spices

  271. they had prepared.

  272. If you just want to listen,

  273. that's fine as well.

  274. They found that the stone

  275. had been rolled away

  276. from the entrance,

  277. so they went in.

  278. But they didn't find

  279. the body of the Lord Jesus.

  280. Can you imagine

  281. how shocked they were

  282. to get to the tomb

  283. and see this stone

  284. rolled away?

  285. They'd watched him die.

  286. They'd heard he was buried

  287. in this garden tomb

  288. that belonged to

  289. Joseph of Arimathea,

  290. a prominent member

  291. of the Sanhedrin,

  292. and he had graciously,

  293. as a follower of Jesus,

  294. offered up his tomb

  295. for Jesus' burial.

  296. So they go here

  297. to try to honor

  298. Jesus' memory,

  299. brought spices

  300. in lieu of flowers,

  301. and they go in,

  302. seeing the stone

  303. is rolled away.

  304. Who rolled the stone away?

  305. The stone is massive.

  306. Nobody could have done it

  307. on their own.

  308. Who did this?

  309. And his body's not there.

  310. And they're standing there

  311. trying to wrap

  312. their heads around it.

  313. What's going on?

  314. Did somebody break in here

  315. and steal Jesus' body away?

  316. And then two men

  317. appeared to them,

  318. clothed in dazzling robes,

  319. and the women were terrified,

  320. and they bowed

  321. with their faces

  322. to the ground,

  323. and the men asked,

  324. Why are you looking

  325. among the dead

  326. for someone who is alive?

  327. He isn't here.

  328. He is risen from the dead.

  329. Remember what he told you

  330. back in Galilee?

  331. The Son of Man

  332. must be betrayed

  333. into the hands

  334. of sinful men,

  335. and he must be crucified,

  336. but he would rise again

  337. on the third day.

  338. Then they remembered

  339. that he had said this.

  340. So then they rushed back

  341. to tell his disciples.

  342. What Jesus said

  343. came true.

  344. Now it started

  345. to make sense.

  346. Now the scales

  347. started to fall

  348. from their eyes.

  349. Now the veils

  350. started to be lifted.

  351. Because even before,

  352. when Jesus was predicting

  353. his own resurrection

  354. from the dead,

  355. they thought maybe

  356. he was talking

  357. allegorically.

  358. Maybe he was

  359. not being literal.

  360. Like, what?

  361. What does he mean?

  362. Tear the temple down

  363. and in three days

  364. I'll build it back up again.

  365. What's he talking about?

  366. And then he does it.

  367. And he triumphs

  368. over death.

  369. And he triumphs

  370. over darkness.

  371. So Jesus' resurrection

  372. is not an isolated miracle.

  373. It's the culmination

  374. of all the law

  375. and the prophets

  376. that came before.

  377. So when you read

  378. through the Old Testament,

  379. you've got all the law.

  380. You know,

  381. the most famous

  382. illustration of that

  383. is the Ten Commandments.

  384. And we look at that,

  385. that Moses gave

  386. to the people

  387. that God gave to him.

  388. And we say,

  389. this is the law.

  390. But that was not

  391. the only part of the law.

  392. The law went much

  393. beyond that.

  394. It was a very expansive law.

  395. And God's point

  396. with all that

  397. was to point

  398. at how mankind

  399. could never free itself

  400. from bondage

  401. to failure.

  402. failure.

  403. You're never going

  404. to be able

  405. to live up

  406. to this standard

  407. of perfection.

  408. God created

  409. this world perfectly.

  410. This is all

  411. how it's supposed to go.

  412. And you're never

  413. going to be able

  414. to meet that standard.

  415. So this was the law.

  416. And then you had

  417. the prophets.

  418. And you read

  419. through the Old Testament book

  420. and they've got

  421. the prophets

  422. talking about

  423. little bits

  424. and pieces about God.

  425. Revealing a little bit more.

  426. Pointing ahead

  427. to Jesus.

  428. But nobody exactly knew

  429. what that meant

  430. or what it looked like

  431. until Jesus

  432. came.

  433. And then Jesus

  434. was the perfect

  435. picture of God.

  436. The law

  437. and the prophets

  438. was an imperfect

  439. picture of God.

  440. It was

  441. not fully clear.

  442. It was not

  443. fully realized.

  444. But then Jesus

  445. came

  446. and he

  447. was the perfect

  448. clear picture

  449. of who God is,

  450. what he's about.

  451. So if you want

  452. to know

  453. who God is

  454. and what he's about,

  455. you can read

  456. the law,

  457. you can read

  458. the prophets,

  459. they're going to give you

  460. an imperfect picture.

  461. When you look at Jesus,

  462. it all comes

  463. into focus.

  464. That was the difference.

  465. Before,

  466. they couldn't see

  467. clearly.

  468. But then Jesus

  469. came.

  470. He said,

  471. this is who God is.

  472. Now he's with you.

  473. Now you get to hear

  474. him speak

  475. to you

  476. directly.

  477. Now you get to see

  478. how he lives.

  479. Now you get to see

  480. what he cares about.

  481. Jesus is

  482. God's

  483. light.

  484. Without

  485. Jesus,

  486. you're living

  487. in the dark.

  488. And you're

  489. stumbling around.

  490. And you're

  491. bumping into each

  492. other.

  493. And that's what we do.

  494. But Jesus

  495. turns the light on.

  496. And you get to see

  497. God clearly.

  498. You get to see

  499. what he's about.

  500. So,

  501. let's go to Malachi

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  502. chapter 4

  503. and verse 2.

  504. Malachi 4

  505. and verse 2.

  506. But for you

  507. who revere

  508. my name,

  509. the son

  510. of righteousness

  511. will rise

  512. with healing

  513. in its rays.

  514. and you will

  515. go out

  516. and you'll

  517. frolic

  518. like well-fed

  519. calves.

  520. Does anybody

  521. raise cattle

  522. in here?

  523. There are

  524. people who

  525. raise cattle

  526. who are not

  527. raising their

  528. hand.

  529. Raise your

  530. hand if you

  531. raise cattle.

  532. There we go.

  533. I'm looking at it.

  534. I know you

  535. raise cattle.

  536. All right.

  537. Or you have

  538. maybe at some

  539. point.

  540. We're in

  541. Clay County,

  542. y'all.

  543. Y'all know

  544. cattle,

  545. all right?

  546. If we go down

  547. in Dallas,

  548. they don't know

  549. cattle as well.

  550. But y'all know

  551. cattle.

  552. When you've

  553. got a young

  554. well-fed

  555. calf,

  556. it wants to

  557. go out

  558. and have

  559. some fun,

  560. right?

  561. But for you

  562. who revere

  563. my name,

  564. the sun

  565. will rise

  566. in the

  567. darkness.

  568. And it'll

  569. be healing

  570. in its

  571. warmth.

  572. And you'll

  573. be like a

  574. young calf

  575. who's getting

  576. enough to

  577. eat.

  578. And it's

  579. got no

  580. worries.

  581. And it

  582. can go

  583. out and

  584. enjoy that

  585. warmth of

  586. the sun.

  587. In a

  588. green

  589. pasture

  590. when the

  591. sun

  592. rises.

  593. Now,

  594. would you

  595. take that

  596. U and

  597. turn it

  598. into an

  599. O?

  600. Because that's

  601. the title

  602. of my

  603. talk today.

  604. Is the

  605. sun

  606. has

  607. risen.

  608. The

  609. S-O-N.

  610. But Malachi

  611. imperfectly

  612. prophesied and

  613. gave us a

  614. little clue.

  615. someday the

  616. sun will

  617. rise.

  618. But we're

  619. not talking

  620. about the

  621. sun that

  622. hangs in

  623. the sky.

  624. We're

  625. talking about

  626. the sun

  627. of

  628. righteousness

  629. or the

  630. S-O-N,

  631. the sun

  632. of God.

  633. And when

  634. he rises,

  635. then healing

  636. will come.

  637. And then joy

  638. will come.

  639. And then

  640. happiness

  641. will come.

  642. And you'll

  643. get to

  644. fully experience

  645. this life

  646. that God

  647. intended for

  648. you.

  649. until then

  650. were still

  651. in the

  652. dark.

  653. The only

  654. thing they

  655. had was

  656. faith.

  657. You know

  658. what the

  659. only thing

  660. that we

  661. have today

  662. is?

  663. Faith.

  664. It's the

  665. same faith.

  666. It's after

  667. the fact

  668. looking back

  669. instead of

  670. before the

  671. fact when

  672. this was

  673. written looking

  674. ahead.

  675. During

  676. Jesus'

  677. time he

  678. was there,

  679. he was

  680. present,

  681. but they

  682. still had

  683. to have

  684. faith that

  685. he was

  686. from God,

  687. that he

  688. was God

  689. himself,

  690. that he

  691. was the

  692. perfect

  693. revelation

  694. of the

  695. father in

  696. the son.

  697. So Malachi

  698. 4.2

  699. teaches us

  700. that Jesus

  701. wasn't just

  702. a little

  703. pinpoint of

  704. light.

  705. Jesus was

  706. not just

  707. another prophet

  708. coming to

  709. talk about

  710. God.

  711. Jesus was

  712. God present

  713. with us.

  714. The son

  715. of righteousness

  716. had risen

  717. and it was

  718. shining down

  719. into the

  720. dark world,

  721. the spiritually

  722. dark world.

  723. Now you

  724. don't have

  725. to stumble

  726. around anymore.

  727. Now there's

  728. something,

  729. a physical

  730. perfect being

  731. to place

  732. your faith

  733. in.

  734. It wasn't

  735. just the

  736. imperfect

  737. lives and

  738. words of

  739. the prophets,

  740. it was

  741. the perfect

  742. revelation of

  743. Jesus Christ.

  744. Now we

  745. get the

  746. complete

  747. picture,

  748. not just

  749. a partial

  750. picture.

  751. Jesus is

  752. God's light

  753. in the

  754. darkness.

  755. We see

  756. this

  757. mentioned

  758. in

  759. Matthew.

  760. Let's go

  761. to Matthew

  762. 17.

  763. This is

  764. the perfect

  765. picture.

  766. Jesus backs

  767. up what I'm

  768. talking about

  769. here.

  770. The Father

  771. backs it up.

  772. You ready?

  773. Matthew 17,

  774. we call it

  775. the

  776. transfiguration.

  777. Everybody say

  778. transfiguration.

  779. Just making

  780. sure y'all

  781. are with me.

  782. You are.

  783. That's great.

  784. Let's go.

  785. We're nearing

  786. the conclusion

  787. here.

  788. So let's

  789. dive into

  790. Matthew 17.

  791. After six

  792. days,

  793. Jesus took

  794. with him

  795. Peter,

  796. James,

  797. and John,

  798. the brother

  799. of James,

  800. and he led

  801. them up a

  802. high mountain

  803. by themselves.

  804. There he

  805. was transfigured

  806. before them.

  807. What does

  808. that mean?

  809. His face

  810. shone like

  811. the sun.

  812. His clothes

  813. became as

  814. white as

  815. the light.

  816. We get

  817. to see

  818. this divine

  819. light of

  820. Jesus.

  821. Like how

  822. you would

  823. think God

  824. looks,

  825. he shows

  826. that to

  827. them.

  828. Yeah,

  829. this is the

  830. good stuff

  831. right here.

  832. This is what

  833. you've been

  834. waiting on.

  835. I've been

  836. telling you,

  837. I've been

  838. giving you

  839. little clues

  840. that I

  841. am sent

  842. from God

  843. and I

  844. am the

  845. Father

  846. one.

  847. I am

  848. God

  849. himself,

  850. but now

  851. I'm

  852. showing you

  853. this divine

  854. light.

  855. I can't

  856. imagine

  857. what that

  858. was like.

  859. And then

  860. just right

  861. then,

  862. there appeared

  863. before them

  864. Moses and

  865. Elijah.

  866. What did

  867. Moses and

  868. Elijah

  869. represent?

  870. The law

  871. and the

  872. prophets.

  873. This is who

  874. they had

  875. hope in

  876. before.

  877. This is

  878. whose word

  879. they believed.

  880. Moses and

  881. Elijah for

  882. centuries,

  883. if you were

  884. going to

  885. trust in

  886. the one

  887. true God,

  888. you were

  889. going to

  890. believe the

  891. words and

  892. the teachings,

  893. the law

  894. of Moses

  895. and Elijah

  896. because they

  897. spoke on

  898. behalf of

  899. God.

  900. They were

  901. imperfect men.

  902. They didn't

  903. do always

  904. everything right.

  905. They didn't

  906. make all the

  907. right decisions

  908. all the time.

  909. Sometimes they

  910. get angry.

  911. Sometimes they

  912. would lead

  913. imperfectly.

  914. This is the

  915. law and the

  916. prophets

  917. represented

  918. by Moses

  919. and Elijah

  920. appearing with

  921. Jesus,

  922. talking with

  923. him.

  924. And in

  925. verse 4,

  926. Peter said

  927. to Jesus,

  928. God, this

  929. is amazing.

  930. Lord, it's

  931. good for us

  932. to be here.

  933. Look at

  934. this.

  935. It's you.

  936. It's Moses.

  937. It's Elijah.

  938. This validates

  939. you, Jesus.

  940. I mean, I

  941. believed in

  942. you.

  943. I had faith

  944. in you.

  945. But look,

  946. you're right

  947. here with

  948. Moses and

  949. Elijah.

  950. Like they're

  951. appearing from

  952. the dead and

  953. they're giving

  954. validation to

  955. you.

  956. God, I tell

  957. you what, I

  958. got a great

  959. idea.

  960. I'm going to

  961. build a little

  962. shelter, one

  963. for you, one

  964. for Moses, one

  965. for Elijah,

  966. Elijah.

  967. Peter was a

  968. guy who liked

  969. to kind of

  970. dive in and

  971. mix it up a

  972. little bit.

  973. I got this.

  974. I got this,

  975. Jesus.

  976. Brilliant idea.

  977. Let us just

  978. stay here for a

  979. while.

  980. While he was

  981. speaking, while

  982. Peter was

  983. talking, the

  984. father interrupts

  985. him.

  986. And he says,

  987. a bright cloud

  988. covered them,

  989. and a voice from

  990. the cloud said,

  991. this is my son,

  992. whom I love,

  993. with him I

  994. am well

  995. pleased, listen

  996. to him.

  997. Peter, it's

  998. not about

  999. Moses and

  1000. Elijah anymore,

  1001. buddy.

  1002. The law and

  1003. the prophets,

  1004. that was

  1005. partial.

  1006. Now you have

  1007. the full

  1008. picture.

  1009. You don't

  1010. need Moses

  1011. and Elijah

  1012. to validate

  1013. Jesus.

  1014. And then

  1015. what happens?

  1016. The disciples

  1017. heard this,

  1018. they freaked

  1019. out.

  1020. They fell

  1021. face down to

  1022. the ground

  1023. terrified,

  1024. but Jesus

  1025. came over and

  1026. touched them

  1027. and said,

  1028. get up,

  1029. don't be

  1030. afraid.

  1031. You know

  1032. Jesus always

  1033. did that.

  1034. This is a

  1035. little rabbit

  1036. trail, but

  1037. anytime you see

  1038. something amazing

  1039. happening and

  1040. people are just

  1041. freaking out,

  1042. you know,

  1043. and Jesus

  1044. told Peter,

  1045. hey, let's go

  1046. out and let's go

  1047. fishing again.

  1048. You've been

  1049. fishing all night

  1050. and the fish

  1051. weren't biting,

  1052. but I tell you

  1053. what, let's go

  1054. one more time.

  1055. And Peter goes

  1056. out there and

  1057. Peter's like,

  1058. God, let me tell

  1059. you that the fish

  1060. aren't biting.

  1061. I'm an experienced

  1062. fisherman, been

  1063. doing it a long

  1064. time, I know.

  1065. Okay, if you

  1066. want to go fishing

  1067. sometime, I'll

  1068. take you out when

  1069. it's a better

  1070. time.

  1071. But okay, fine,

  1072. since you're

  1073. Jesus, we'll go,

  1074. but I'm warning

  1075. you, it's not

  1076. going to work.

  1077. And then he gets

  1078. out there and

  1079. Jesus says, put the

  1080. nets down one

  1081. more time.

  1082. And all the fish

  1083. in the entire sea

  1084. came in and

  1085. pulled him in.

  1086. And what did

  1087. Peter do?

  1088. He fell down to

  1089. his knees and

  1090. said, oh God, I

  1091. messed up.

  1092. Depart from me.

  1093. I don't even

  1094. deserve to be

  1095. around you.

  1096. I'm a sinful

  1097. man.

  1098. And Jesus said,

  1099. get up, fear

  1100. not, don't worry

  1101. about it.

  1102. Jesus' response was

  1103. always compassion.

  1104. It was never, I

  1105. told you so.

  1106. It was never, why

  1107. didn't you have

  1108. faith the first

  1109. time?

  1110. It was never, when

  1111. are you going to

  1112. learn?

  1113. That's our

  1114. responses.

  1115. Jesus' response

  1116. was, don't be

  1117. afraid.

  1118. It's okay.

  1119. I have compassion

  1120. for you.

  1121. So if there's

  1122. somebody who

  1123. speaks for

  1124. Jesus, and

  1125. that's not their

  1126. demeanor, that's

  1127. not their

  1128. response, then

  1129. maybe they're not

  1130. speaking for

  1131. Jesus like they

  1132. present themselves

  1133. to be.

  1134. Because we see

  1135. who God is in

  1136. the person of

  1137. Jesus.

  1138. We see the full

  1139. picture.

  1140. This is who

  1141. Jesus is.

  1142. So if you're not

  1143. perfect and

  1144. somebody's shaking

  1145. their finger at

  1146. you for it, that's

  1147. not coming from

  1148. Jesus.

  1149. Jesus says, don't

  1150. be afraid.

  1151. Fear not.

  1152. I have compassion

  1153. on you.

  1154. I have a plan for

  1155. you.

  1156. Come on, let's

  1157. walk together.

  1158. That's Jesus.

  1159. That is the

  1160. Father.

  1161. That is God.

  1162. And that's what

  1163. Jesus said,

  1164. this is my

  1165. son.

  1166. Hear him.

  1167. Listen to

  1168. him.

  1169. The resurrection

  1170. of Jesus would

  1171. confirm that that

  1172. moment back on

  1173. Mount Tabor, when

  1174. the transfiguration

  1175. happened and Jesus

  1176. was shown to be

  1177. God early.

  1178. They got a little

  1179. picture.

  1180. Peter, James, and

  1181. John, that was a

  1182. decisive moment.

  1183. That was an

  1184. integral moment,

  1185. especially if you

  1186. were a Jew,

  1187. especially if you've

  1188. been following the

  1189. law and the

  1190. prophets your whole

  1191. life, and the

  1192. Torah was what

  1193. your life completely

  1194. revolved around.

  1195. The teachings of the

  1196. Old Testament.

  1197. That was your

  1198. world.

  1199. That was your God

  1200. almost.

  1201. And now God

  1202. himself is saying,

  1203. this is what it's

  1204. about now.

  1205. It's about Jesus

  1206. Christ.

  1207. He's not one voice

  1208. among many.

  1209. He's the final

  1210. revelation of me

  1211. that you'll ever

  1212. need.

1213. I want to share this

  1214. quote with you.

1215. It's going to be hard

1216. to read, so I'll read

  1217. it for you.

  1218. The resurrection is

  1219. not only God's

  1220. vindication of his

  1221. son, where he

  1222. showed and justified

  1223. and proved that

1224. Jesus is who he says

  1225. he is.

  1226. It is the vindication

  1227. of all that Jesus

  1228. taught.

  1229. Easter Sunday,

  1230. today, ready?

  1231. It's nothing less

  1232. than the triumph,

  1233. the victory of the

  1234. peaceable kingdom of

  1235. Christ.

  1236. The peaceable kingdom

  1237. of Christ.

  1238. Jesus' kingdom came

  1239. to bring peace, not

  1240. war.

  1241. So if somebody is

  1242. trying to act like

  1243. Jesus' kingdom brings

  1244. war and conquest,

  1245. that's what the Jews

  1246. wanted it to bring.

  1247. That's why they

  1248. turned on him after

  1249. they weighed the

  1250. palm branches and

  1251. said, yes, Hosanna,

  1252. Jesus our king is

  1253. coming to give us

  1254. victory and conquest.

  1255. And then, fast

  1256. forward, and they're

  1257. yelling, crucify him.

  1258. He's not who he

  1259. thought he was.

  1260. The peaceable kingdom

  1261. of Christ.

  1262. Easter changes

  1263. everything.

  1264. Easter is the hope

  1265. of the world.

  1266. Easter is the dawn

  1267. of a new age.

1268. It is the rising of

  1269. the new Jerusalem

  1270. that someday we read

  1271. in Revelation is

  1272. going to come down

  1273. to this earth.

  1274. God is bringing

  1275. the new.

  1276. He said, I saw

  1277. the holy city,

  1278. the new Jerusalem

  1279. coming down out

  1280. of the heavens.

  1281. That's what Easter

  1282. is about.

  1283. And it's on the

  1284. horizon of humanity's

  1285. burned out landscape.

  1286. Easter is God

  1287. saying, once again,

  1288. because this has been

  1289. his theme from the

  1290. beginning, this is my

  1291. beloved son with whom

  1292. I am well pleased.

  1293. Listen to him.

  1294. him.

  1295. Jesus is the fulfillment

  1296. of all of it.

  1297. Jesus is built

  1298. on the father.

  1299. He's the impersonation.

  1300. He's the personification,

  1301. not impersonation.

  1302. He's the personification

  1303. of the father.

  1304. Jesus and the father

  1305. are one.

  1306. Christianity is built

  1307. on the person

  1308. of the risen Jesus.

  1309. It's not built

  1310. on principles.

  1311. It's not built

  1312. on ethics.

  1313. It's not built

  1314. on tradition.

  1315. Christianity

  1316. is built

  1317. on Jesus.

  1318. If your version

  1319. of Christianity

  1320. doesn't look like

  1321. who Jesus was,

  1322. then what you have

  1323. is not Christianity.

  1324. It might be religion,

  1325. but you're missing

  1326. the resurrection.

  1327. You might have religion,

  1328. but you're missing

  1329. the resurrection.

  1330. You don't get

  1331. to claim Jesus.

  1332. You don't get

  1333. to claim the Christ,

  1334. so you shouldn't

  1335. be calling it Christian

  1336. or Christianity

  1337. because Christ,

  1338. what he taught

1339. is not what you have.

  1340. Now, I pray

  1341. that the vast majority

  1342. of you,

  1343. either already have

  1344. what Jesus taught

  1345. and who he was

  1346. or you're ready

  1347. to accept it today

  1348. because there'd be

  1349. no better day

  1350. than on Easter Sunday

  1351. to say,

  1352. I choose Jesus.

1353. I choose the risen one.

  1354. And that leads us

  1355. to our final thought.

  1356. Because Jesus rose,

  1357. your world has hope.

  1358. Your world,

  1359. not just the world,

  1360. but your world

  1361. has hope.

1362. With all of your hangups,

  1363. all of your problems,

  1364. all of your circumstances,

1365. maybe all of your pride,

  1366. all of your accomplishments,

1367. all of that has hope,

  1368. not because of you,

1369. not because of your neighbor,

1370. not because of your family,

1371. not because of your finances,

1372. not because of your status,

  1373. not because of anything

  1374. that you can do

1375. or anything that you can earn.

  1376. Your world has hope

1377. because of one single fact,

1378. Jesus rose from the dead.

  1379. Otherwise,

  1380. you're still in darkness

1381. like the rest of us.

  1382. Otherwise,

  1383. we're all still

  1384. stumbling around

  1385. convincing ourselves

  1386. to believe in somebody

  1387. that really wasn't

  1388. any different

  1389. than anybody else.

  1390. But he was different

  1391. because he did die

1392. and he did rise from the dead.

1393. And that makes it different.

  1394. That makes it somebody

  1395. to put hope in.

  1396. So if your hope

  1397. is in anything else

  1398. than a risen Jesus,

  1399. your hope is unfounded.

  1400. So,

  1401. people build their lives

  1402. around other things.

  1403. They build their lives

  1404. around control,

  1405. success,

  1406. comfort,

  1407. identity,

  1408. even religion.

  1409. But not enough people

  1410. in politics,

  1411. not enough people

1412. on either side of the aisle,

  1413. not enough people

  1414. in churches,

  1415. not enough people

  1416. in county government,

  1417. not enough people

  1418. in school systems,

  1419. not enough people

  1420. in the workplace

  1421. build their lives

  1422. around Jesus Christ.

  1423. Let that be different

  1424. for you and me.

  1425. Let us wake up

  1426. every morning and say,

  1427. today,

1428. I'm going to follow Jesus.

1429. He might lead me places

  1430. I'm not expecting.

  1431. He might require things

1432. in me I'm not expecting.

  1433. He might make me

1434. go against my better judgment

  1435. because his judgment

  1436. is better than mine.

  1437. But because Jesus rose,

  1438. your world has hope.

1439. You don't have to be trapped

  1440. in your best abilities.

1441. You don't have to be trapped

  1442. in your own wisdom.

1443. You have hope beyond that

1444. because Jesus rose from the dead.

  1445. 2 Peter,

1446. this is the last scripture

  1447. we'll read today.

  1448. 2 Peter 1 and verse 19,

1449. we have this prophetic word

  1450. more fully confirmed.

1451. You see what it's saying there?

1452. The prophecies that you read about

  1453. in the Old Testament,

1454. all those books of prophecy

1455. and you go through Micah

  1456. and Nahum

1457. and you read about Elijah

  1458. and Elisha and Samuel

1459. and you read all these

  1460. Old Testament prophets

1461. and you see what they had to say

1462. and sometimes it's hard to understand.

1463. You got to really study it out

1464. to try to figure out

  1465. what they're talking about.

  1466. But Peter,

  1467. who walked with Jesus

1468. and was there on Mount Tabor

  1469. when the transfiguration happened,

  1470. Peter says,

  1471. trust me,

1472. we have this prophetic word

  1473. more fully confirmed.

  1474. I was there

  1475. when Moses and Elijah

  1476. disappeared from view.

1477. Because you know what happened

  1478. back on the transfiguration?

  1479. Moses and Elijah appeared

1480. and they're talking with Jesus

  1481. and then God speaks,

1482. this is my beloved son,

  1483. hear him.

1484. You know what happened then?

1485. Moses and Elijah faded away.

1486. They were left with the only one

  1487. they truly needed,

1488. which was Jesus Christ himself.

  1489. Peter says,

  1490. I was there.

1491. And we have those prophecies

  1492. now confirmed.

  1493. We have those prophecies

  1494. now confirmed.

  1495. Fully confirmed.

1496. We've got the full picture now.

  1497. And you'll do well

1498. to pay attention to it.

  1499. Because it's like a lamp

1500. shining in a dark place.

  1501. It's like a sun

1502. rising and shining its light

1503. down into this dark world.

  1504. It's like the morning

  1505. dawning after a long

  1506. and hard night.

  1507. until the day dawns

  1508. and the morning star

  1509. rises in your hearts

1510. like it's risen in mine.

  1511. That's what Peter's saying to us.

1512. This is what it's about.

  1513. It's about Jesus.

  1514. Paul said,

  1515. I can't really know anything

  1516. among you

  1517. except this one thing.

  1518. Jesus Christ

  1519. and him crucified.

1520. And I can tell you,

  1521. I don't know

  1522. everything about everything.

1523. You might know more than me

  1524. about some things.

1525. We might have different ideas

  1526. about some things.

1527. But this one thing I know,

  1528. Jesus Christ

  1529. and him crucified

1530. and him risen from the dead.

  1531. Because of that,

  1532. I was spiritually blind.

  1533. I was in darkness.

  1534. I was stumbling around.

1535. Like all of you were.

  1536. Until the morning star,

  1537. Jesus,

1538. the light of the world.

1539. Can we say that together?

  1540. Jesus,

1541. the light of the world

  1542. rose in my heart

  1543. and I pray

  1544. he's risen in yours.

1545. Would you bow your head with me?

  1546. Jesus does not fit

  1547. into your life.

1548. Your life depends on him.

  1549. Jesus is the answer.

1550. Jesus is the light of the world.

  1551. You've heard it

  1552. from the moment

1553. you walked into this building

  1554. this morning.

  1555. You've heard it

  1556. in every song,

  1557. every scripture reading,

  1558. every prayer

  1559. that's been lifted up.

  1560. Jesus is the way.

  1561. Jesus is the truth.

  1562. Jesus is the life.

1563. Jesus is the full picture

  1564. of God revealed

  1565. to you and me.

  1566. don't build your life

  1567. around control,

  1568. success,

  1569. comfort,

  1570. identity,

  1571. even religion.

  1572. Build your life

  1573. around Jesus

  1574. and who he is,

  1575. what he said,

  1576. how he lived.

  1577. You read something

  1578. in the Old Testament

  1579. that doesn't seem

1580. to line up with Jesus.

  1581. Compare it to Jesus.

  1582. Say,

  1583. is this something

  1584. in the Old Testament

  1585. that I need to

  1586. let define me

1587. or do I need to

  1588. let Jesus Christ

  1589. define me

  1590. and whatever I read

  1591. in the Old Testament

  1592. or the New Testament

  1593. point me to Jesus?

  1594. Whatever I experienced

  1595. in church,

  1596. that might have been

  1597. like Jesus,

1598. it might not have been

  1599. like Jesus.

1600. I need to let it

  1601. point me

  1602. to Jesus.

  1603. That's who God is.

  1604. A lot of people

  1605. will talk about God.

  1606. A lot of people

  1607. will claim God.

  1608. A lot of people

  1609. will call themselves

  1610. Christians.

  1611. Say,

  1612. this is Christian.

  1613. The Bible told me

  1614. to do this.

  1615. Here's what I want

  1616. to know.

  1617. How like Jesus

  1618. are you?

  1619. How like Jesus

  1620. am I?

  1621. That's how I know

1622. if I'm right with God.

1623. If I'm like his son.

  1624. Because he said,

  1625. hear my son.

  1626. Listen to him.

  1627. Hear what he has

  1628. to say.

  1629. See how he lives.

1630. See who he cares about.

  1631. See what he does

  1632. with his time.

  1633. I pray right now

1634. while our heads are bowed

1635. and our eyes are closed

  1636. and we're just

  1637. in communion

  1638. with the Holy Spirit

  1639. of God,

1640. I pray that you would

1641. open your heart to him

  1642. and say,

  1643. God,

  1644. change me.

  1645. Take over my life.

  1646. Make me like you.

1647. Jared's going to lead us

  1648. in a song

  1649. in just a moment.

1650. you can listen to him sing.

  1651. We won't stand.

1652. You can remain in your seats.

  1653. You can sing along

  1654. if you'd like,

  1655. quietly.

  1656. But during these next

  1657. couple of minutes

  1658. before we all leave,

1659. would you open your heart

  1660. to Jesus today?

  1661. I'm not asking you

1662. to think I'm the best preacher

  1663. you've ever heard

  1664. because that's not going

  1665. to be true.

  1666. I'm not asking you

1667. to think that this is

  1668. the greatest church

  1669. you've ever been in,

  1670. but you know what?

1671. It is if this is

  1672. where you find Jesus,

  1673. the real Jesus.

  1674. So would you open

1675. your heart to him today?

  1676. Jared,

1677. go ahead and lead us.

  1678. It was my cross

  1679. you bore

  1680. so I could live

  1681. in the freedom

  1682. you died for.

1683. If you need to pray down here,

1684. this is open for that.

  1685. If you need somebody

  1686. to talk to,

1687. I'd be happy to meet you

1688. down here and pray with you.

  1689. Forevermore.

  1690. Worthy is your name,

  1691. Jesus.

  1692. You deserve the praise.

  1693. Worthy is your name.

  1694. Worthy is your name,

  1695. Jesus.

  1696. You deserve the praise.

  1697. Give him the praise.

  1698. Worthy is your name.

1699. If you need to turn

  1700. to Jesus today,

1701. don't walk out these doors

  1702. without making that decision.

  1703. Most important decision

  1704. you'll ever make

  1705. in your life

  1706. because he changes everything.

  1707. He's not a dead man.

  1708. He's alive.

  1709. He's there for you.

  1710. He's ready to listen.

  1711. He's ready to work.

1712. His spirit wants to take up

  1713. residence in you today.

1714. And now my shame is gone

  1715. and I stand amazed

  1716. in your love undeniable.

1717. Your grace goes on and on.

1718. I will sing of your goodness

  1719. forevermore.

1720. If you're able to stand,

1721. would you join us in standing

1722. and sing this to Jesus?

  1723. Worthy is your name,

  1724. Jesus.

  1725. You deserve the praise.

  1726. Worthy is your name.

  1727. He is worthy.

  1728. Worthy is your name,

  1729. Jesus.

  1730. Yes.

  1731. You deserve the praise.

  1732. Worthy is your name.

  1733. One more time.

  1734. Just the voices.

  1735. Worthy is your name,

  1736. Jesus.

  1737. You deserve the praise.

  1738. Worthy is your name.

  1739. Worthy is your name,

  1740. Jesus.

  1741. You deserve the praise.

  1742. Worthy is your name.

  1743. Amen.

1744. God, that's our prayer to you today

1745. is you do deserve all our praise.

1746. You deserve all our faith.

  1747. You deserve complete control

  1748. over our spirit,

1749. over how we conduct ourselves,

  1750. over how we think,

  1751. how we make decisions.

1752. It must line up with the person

  1753. of the risen Christ.

1754. I pray that you would change us today,

1755. make us more like you.

1756. Let us truly be Christian.

1757. living like Christ in this world,

  1758. showing people the darkness

1759. can have full, complete light

  1760. shown into it,

1761. just like you've shown in our hearts.

1762. We'll thank you for it.

1763. We'll give you for it.

1764. All the praise for it.

  1765. All the glory.

1766. It's in Jesus' name we pray.

  1767. Amen.

1768. Church, thank you so much

  1769. for being with us

  1770. for Easter Sunday worship.

  1771. You are dismissed.

  1772. No activities tonight,

1773. but we'll see you back here Wednesday

1774. at six o'clock and next Sunday.

  1775. God bless.

  1776. Thank you.
