  1. How many of you watch movies for the credits?

  2. It's your favorite part.

  3. You skip to the end and watch the credits before you watch anything else.

  4. ! Nobody?

  5. How many of you have seen a Marvel Comics movie?

  6. Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Iron Mans, the Spider-Mans, all that stuff.

  7. What do they have?

  8. Now, I'm going to test how many of you are really fans of Marvel here.

  9. What do they have after the movie ends?

  10. Extra scenes, right?

  11. Usually a mid-credits scene and then a post-credits scene.

  12. And so, if you're watching it in the theater, do you get up and leave when the movie ends?

  13. No, you got to stick it out.

  14. You can always see the people who leave when a Marvel movie ends.

  15. It's like, y'all don't really know how this works, do you?

  16. Otherwise, now what I do whenever I, we just went and watched the Sheep Detective movie.

  17. That was funny, by the way.

  18. Sheep solving a murder mystery, if you're wondering.

  19. They're scraping the bottom of the barrel for what to make movies about nowadays.

  20. But look, it was a good time.

  21. And I was Googling, is there a post-credits scene to this movie?

  22. There wasn't.

  23. So, we got up and left.

  24. Why?

  25. Because nobody wants to stick around for the credits, right?

  26. It's just kind of...

  27. Now, they should.

  28. All those people worked really hard on that movie.

  29. And you see their names scrolling by and you're like, forget it.

  30. I don't care who made this thing.

  31. It's over.

  32. We're going to start the book of Romans with the credits.

  33. So, take your Bibles, if you would, and go to Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  34. It's the end.

  35. It's the credits.

  36. He is recognizing the people he needs to acknowledge.

  37. Paul wrote this letter to the church in Rome.

  38. We're going to get into more of the background of the letter, the purpose behind it.

  39. We're going to get into more of that next week.

  40. So, come back next week if you want to know what this whole thing is about.

  41. But today, we're going to focus on some very interesting things that Paul focused on as he ended this letter to the church in Rome.

  42. This was arguably the most important, or if you look up at the slides, the most influential letter that Paul ever wrote.

  43. We don't need to skip over the credits.

  44. So, let's see what he has to say in Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  45. You say, why are we starting with the credits?

  46. Why are we starting with the end?

  47. Well, I have read Romans front to back my whole life, and only recently I was challenged by a book and a teaching series called Reading Romans Backwards, more of a lecture series, from one of my favorite Bible scholars and theologians out there.

  48. And he got into this thing called Reading Romans Backwards.

  49. And it's kind of starting toward the end of the book because we get to get the whole picture, the context of why he was writing this letter.

  50. And it serves us well to start back then.

  51. The people to whom he was writing, they already knew the context.

  52. They knew the whole situation.

  53. They were living it.

  54. So, they didn't need that context.

  55. They were the context.

  56. So, they got to start at the beginning and understand exactly what he was talking about in context.

  57. We have to go kind of get the picture.

  58. So, we're going toward the end where he shares some of the context.

  59. And then we'll work our way back toward the beginning of Paul's letter to the churches in Rome.

  60. So, let's look at verse 1 of Romans 16.

  61. Paul writes,

  62. By the way, Asia, not the continent you're thinking of.

  63. Asia was one of the provinces of Rome and about in modern day Turkey.

  64. So, that's what he's talking about when he says the province of Asia.

  65. Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.

  66. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me.

  67. They are outstanding among the apostles.

  68. They were in Christ before I was.

  69. Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend of the Lord.

  70. Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys.

  71. Greet Apelles, whose fidelity to Christ has stood the test.

  72. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.

  73. Greet Herodian, my fellow Jews.

  74. We have different names nowadays, don't we?

  75. They're a little different, aren't they?

  76. They're a mouthful.

  77. Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.

  78. Was Narcissus narcissistic?

  79. I don't know.

  80. We can move on.

  81. We don't need rabbit trails right now.

  82. Here we go, verse 12.

  83. Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa.

  84. Watch this.

  85. Those women who work hard in the Lord.

  86. Greet my dear friend Persis.

  87. Another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.

  88. And then in verse 13, we finish.

  89. Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me too.

  90. Quite some time ago, I felt like the Lord laid this epistle, this letter from Paul to the churches in Rome that we call Romans.

  91. We all have it in our New Testaments.

  92. Laid this book of the Bible in on my heart to preach through.

  93. And this has been probably the last couple months.

  94. I've been praying through and working through what sermon series to start next for our church.

  95. And he confirmed to me, yeah, Romans is the way we need to go right now.

  96. So I was thinking, well, we've got Mother's Day coming up.

  97. I kind of want to go from Romans backwards to the front.

  98. So I'm looking through, how is this going to work?

  99. And then that verse 13 stood out to me.

  100. Rufus's mother, who has been a mother to me too.

  101. Thinking, huh, that's interesting that Paul talks about mothering.

  102. And this lines up to start this series in Romans on Mother's Day.

  103. Then I went back through the rest of that chapter and I saw how many women Paul was highlighting in his credits, in his acknowledgements at the end of his letter.

  104. So I worked through this and the Holy Spirit guided me into seeing how valuable a role these women played in not only Paul's life in ministry, but the work of the early church of Jesus Christ.

  105. Jesus had died.

  106. He was risen from the dead.

  107. He had given his marching orders to his people, his followers, to spread around the known world at the time and carry the message, the gospel message of Jesus, the good news.

  108. Jesus was here.

  109. Jesus had come.

  110. Jesus had risen.

  111. He was alive.

  112. And all could be forgiven of their sins and have a place in God's kingdom through Jesus Christ.

  113. This was the message.

  114. So his followers started preaching that message.

  115. They started going everywhere they could.

  116. And Paul was one of the early fathers of this movement.

  117. He was one of the people that God used in the most instrumental ways to help this catch on.

  118. And there were people all around Paul that were helping him in this ministry.

  119. And he acknowledges them in each one of his letters.

  120. And in this one, women are featured prominently.

  121. So I think it's appropriate on this Mother's Day to look at these women that Jesus valued, that Paul valued,

  122. and that God used mightily in the early days of this church.

  123. Churches are gathered all across this world, all across America celebrating Mother's Day.

  124. Let's look and see what role they played in the life of Paul.

  125. So, number one, we're going to look at the planters.

  126. We've been in Romans 16.

  127. We're going to jump around a little bit to a couple other places.

  128. But if you want to keep your Bible open to Romans 16, that'll work because we'll keep referring back to that.

  129. So let's start back at the beginning with Priscilla and Phoebe.

  130. Phoebe and Priscilla.

  131. What does he call them?

  132. He calls Phoebe our sister, a deacon, a benefactor.

  133. It's safe to say that Phoebe was instrumental in the life of Paul and the early church.

  134. Now, what do we mean by a sister?

  135. We call somebody a sister in Christ.

  136. What are we talking about?

  137. Come on, y'all.

  138. This isn't a hard one.

  139. Somebody's got this.

  140. Fellow believer, right?

  141. A fellow Christ follower.

  142. We believe the same thing about Jesus.

  143. So you're a woman.

  144. We believe the same thing about Jesus.

  145. So I can call you my sister in the faith, following Jesus together.

  146. I'm married to my wife, but she's also my sister in Christ, right?

  147. So let's move on to the next part.

  148. He calls her a deacon.

  149. This was a diakonos.

  150. That is the Greek word that was used.

  151. It's talking about a servant of the church.

  152. Usually would have some kind of ordination coupled with that,

  153. based on Paul's other teachings.

  154. So Phoebe was a sister in Christ.

  155. She was a deacon, and she was a prosthesis.

  156. That is a benefactor.

  157. That means she had means.

  158. She had income.

  159. She had some measure of wealth and was able to help support,

  160. both probably by opening her home and also giving financially to the work of the ministry.

  161. So she was an instrumental key player in Paul's ministry and in the church.

  162. So when Paul was writing this letter to the church at Rome, he wasn't in Rome.

  163. He had to send this letter by hand.

  164. They had to travel over a thousand miles to get to Rome to share this letter with the churches in Rome.

  165. We'll give you more background next Sunday on the churches in Rome.

  166. I'm not going to spend too much time diving into that.

  167. So come back next week, and you'll find out what was going on in Rome.

  168. But Paul needed somebody reliable.

  169. He needed somebody who could speak well.

  170. He needed somebody who could expound on what he was writing.

  171. When they went and read his letter multiple times to the different churches meeting in Rome,

  172. they weren't all gathering in a building like we enjoy today.

  173. There were many house churches that had sprang up throughout Rome.

  174. They were filled with a mixture of Gentile Roman believers,

  175. and they were filled with a mixture of traditional Jewish believers,

  176. all trying to follow Jesus in the days after his resurrection.

  177. And Paul needed somebody to go on his behalf and preach this letter to these churches.

  178. The most reliable person he had was Phoebe.

  179. So she played a powerful, dynamic, vital role in the early church.

  180. And God used her in this arguably most important, most influential letter that Paul wrote that we call Romans.

  181. One of the early church fathers, Origen.

  182. Noted this about Phoebe.

  183. He said there were women ordained in the church's ministry by the apostles' authority.

  184. So we see this Phoebe being called a deacon.

  185. And that would have been, like we said, coupled with some ordination.

  186. Well, that wasn't something the church would take lightly.

  187. They would identify who are the best equipped, who are the most qualified,

  188. who are the people who are going to serve the church well in this servant role of deacons.

  189. God has blessed us with some wonderful deacons here in our church.

  190. We've got nearly 20 deacons who have set themselves apart to serve the church.

  191. And they do so every week.

  192. They meet every month.

  193. They'll take meals to those who can't get here.

  194. They will pray.

  195. They'll serve.

  196. They meet together.

  197. They pray for each other.

  198. They pray over needs that you have.

  199. They serve the church well.

  200. The church has had that.

  201. The church at large, the universal church scattered around the world and identified in local individual assemblies just like ours here in Henrietta.

  202. They have had deacons throughout from the very beginning.

  203. And Phoebe was one of these.

  204. So we recognize and celebrate that a woman like Phoebe, the church believed she ought to be ordained into the ministry because she helped in many ways.

  205. There was precedent for this.

  206. Think back of Luke chapter 8 when Mary Magdalene and Joanna provided for Jesus' ministry out of their own means.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  207. Jesus was the first one to normalize women as the financial and logistical backbone of his ministry.

  208. So Paul was picking up the torch of what Jesus did.

  209. The early church was saying, yes, we see the value that women brought to Jesus' ministry, and we're going to continue that today.

  210. Back in Luke chapter 8 and verses 1 through 3, the 12 were with him, were with Jesus.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  211. And also some women, Mary, called Magdalene, Joanna, the wife of Chusa, the manager of Herod's household, Susanna, and many others.

  212. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

  213. So this is Phoebe.

  214. Then we move on to Priscilla.

  215. Along with her husband Aquila, Paul says she risked her neck or risked her very life.

  216. He called her his co-worker in Christ.

  217. She laid it all on the line for the ministry.

  218. So on this Mother's Day, we recognize these women that were instrumental in Paul's life and in his ministry.

  219. By the way, Paul's son in the ministry.

  220. We're going to test your Bible knowledge here.

  221. Does anybody know or want to guess who Paul's son in the ministry was?

  222. Timothy.

  223. We got it.

  224. Timothy.

  225. He wrote two letters to Timothy.

  226. First Timothy, second Timothy.

  227. We've got them in our New Testament.

  228. He uses the same word for Timothy that he uses for Priscilla and Aquila.

  229. This co-worker means somebody who carried the burden with them.

  230. Somebody who shared in the load.

  231. Priscilla was identified as a church planter.

  232. They would open their home, Priscilla and Aquila, and help get churches off the ground.

  233. They were the early version of a church starter, a church planter.

  234. And they were teachers, Priscilla and Aquila both.

  235. Funny thing is, in Acts chapter 18, there were two great teachers in the church in the day of Paul.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  236. One was Paul.

  237. Does anybody remember who the other one was?

  238. Apollos.

  239. It was Apollos.

  240. It was Paul and Apollos.

  241. These two great teachers of the Christian faith.

  242. Apollos was out there teaching.

  243. And you know what Priscilla and Aquila did?

  244. They invited him into their home and they corrected his teaching.

  245. They corrected his theology.

  246. In Acts chapter 18, you can read about this.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  247. They set him straight on some things.

  248. Said, Apollos, you're doing great.

  249. You're a little bit off on a few things.

  250. So they brought him in and set him straight according to the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

  251. So these women had powerful ability in ministry.

  252. A deep understanding of the faith and the scriptures.

  253. And Paul gives them credit here at the end of Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  254. So Phoebe carried the letter.

  255. Preached it to the churches in Rome.

  256. Priscilla explained the teaching of the scriptures.

  257. Without them, Paul's teachings, Paul's ministry look a lot different.

  258. So we're thankful for them.

  259. Moving on.

  260. There we go.

  261. Number two.

  262. Mary, Tryphena, Tryphosa, and Persis.

  263. Who were these women?

  264. These were the ordinary laborers.

  265. Paul calls them hard workers.

  266. Mary.

  267. And then there were seemingly the twins, Tryphena and Tryphosa.

  268. Do you know what those names meant back in that world?

  269. Tryphena meant dainty and Tryphosa meant delicate.

  270. So whatever vision their parents had for these ladies, maybe they were dainty and delicate in some ways, but they knew how to work.

  271. Paul specifically calls them out for their hard work.

  272. Look back in chapter 16 of Romans, verse 6.

  273. Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.

  274. And then jump down, if you would, to verse 12.

  275. Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who worked hard in the Lord.

  276. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.

  277. Here's what I want to leave you with.

  278. Ordinary work is the invisible strength of God's kingdom.

  279. So on this Mother's Day, I think it's appropriate to highlight how hard these women work.

  280. How many of you would say mothers work as hard or harder than anybody else?

  281. You better have your hand up right now.

  282. It's Mother's Day, y'all.

  283. Of course they do.

  284. The role of motherhood demands hard work.

  285. These women worked very hard.

  286. Paul noted them for their work.

  287. There were plenty of other people who worked hard.

  288. Listen, it wasn't easy being a Jesus follower.

  289. And starting point this morning, we talked a little bit about that.

  290. In today's world, it's different.

  291. You get up.

  292. Sometimes you fulfill a societal expectation of going to church on Sunday.

  293. Sometimes it's more than that.

  294. But sometimes it's just, well, it's Sunday.

  295. I guess we're going to church.

  296. Church, we've got Christian radio.

  297. We've got Christian bookstores.

  298. We've got Christian music.

  299. We've got Christian insurance.

  300. We've got Christian everything, man.

  301. That was not so in their world.

  302. It was a very pagan world.

  303. It was a very anti-Christ world, anti-Christian world.

  304. And this church was trying to get its feet under it.

  305. And it was hard being a follower of Jesus.

  306. You know what Christian means, right?

  307. Like Christ.

  308. So when we call ourselves Christian, as just a side note, what we're telling people is,

  309. I'm like Christ.

  310. I'm like Jesus.

  311. I'm like the one who called himself the Christ.

  312. Well, that's a lot to live up to.

  313. So by God's power, by his spirit, we can reach that.

  314. We can become more and more like him with each passing day.

  315. But man, being a Christian back then, it was dangerous.

  316. It required a lot of hard work.

  317. You didn't have a beautiful building to come in and have your service and go off to your classroom and all that.

  318. We didn't have any of that back in the early church.

  319. We, as a church, as a universal church, were just trying to get our feet under us.

  320. We were trying to get going.

  321. We were trying to stay out of prison, trying to stay off the government's radar,

  322. and still propagate or spread the gospel message of Jesus.

  323. And it did spread.

  324. It spread like wildfire because of the hard work of the men and the women of the early church.

  325. And Paul notes four of them here specifically.

  326. Mary, Tryphena, and Tryphos of the twins, and Persis.

  327. And you know what he uses when he says work?

  328. He uses the word copiao.

  329. Copiao means we're not just working a job.

  330. It means laboring to the point of exhaustion.

  331. It means working until you're ready to drop.

  332. Working your fingers to the bone.

  333. Now think back on your own mom.

  334. How many of you would say,

  335. I remember seeing my mom work to the point of exhaustion.

  336. I remember seeing her work, laboring, hard.

  337. She's exhausted.

  338. She's tired.

  339. And she kept working.

  340. Kept a smile on her face.

  341. God has given mothers this unique gift,

  342. this unique ability to sometimes, often set themselves aside

  343. and prioritize those whom they love

  344. and work their fingers to the bone for those people.

  345. And Paul's calling out these women for doing that

  346. on behalf of the Lord and his work and his church.

  347. So we should value our moms.

  348. Value the women in our midst

  349. who work tirelessly,

  350. who work to the point of exhaustion

  351. for their families,

  352. for their church family,

  353. for their community.

  354. And I've seen it in this church.

  355. I've seen it in our school system.

  356. I've seen it in your families.

  357. I've seen so many examples sitting in this room

  358. of women who tirelessly are used by God

  359. to work, to labor for the faith,

  360. for their families.

  361. This is the same word that Jesus used in John 4

  362. when he was tired.

  363. He had worked himself to the point of exhaustion.

  364. And he sat at a well.

  365. And a Samaritan woman came up

  366. to draw water from the well.

  367. And while he's recovering from the point of exhaustion,

  368. he shares Jesus.

  369. He shares himself.

  370. He shares the way, the truth, and the life

  371. with this woman.

  372. But that's the word.

  373. It's what Jesus needed.

  374. He needed to do the work

  375. that his father had sent him to do.

  376. And so many of you,

  377. specifically, I'm looking at you moms today,

  378. work yourselves tirelessly

  379. for the same work that Jesus did

  380. that we're all called to do as his church.

  381. So Paul noted these women for that.

  382. These women represent the invisible strength

  383. of God's church,

  384. the invisible strength of God's kingdom.

  385. I'm thinking of, man,

  386. I'll start calling out examples

  387. and then we're gonna leave out way too many people.

  388. But one specifically,

  389. I'm thinking of Jaquita Graves,

  390. who has taught her class for so many years.

  391. And so many people have been used,

  392. have been, she's been used in their lives.

  393. She's taught them so much.

  394. Their knowledge has expanded.

  395. Their faith has grown.

  396. Their walk with God has been cemented.

  397. Roots have dug down deep

  398. because of the ministry

  399. that God has done through her.

  400. Not only that,

  401. but she's chairman of the committee on committees.

  402. And listen, y'all,

  403. we could do a dozen other examples

  404. off the top of my head

  405. from this church.

  406. So we're only gonna take time for one.

  407. And if you got mad that it was Jaquita,

  408. I can't help you, all right?

  409. But she's one that comes to mind immediately.

  410. But there are so many other women in this church

  411. that we could highlight

  412. and just thank God for their faithful service,

  413. tireless service.

  414. But you know they do get tired.

  415. But they continue on.

  416. And we thank God for that.

  417. They aren't always in the spotlight.

  418. Sometimes they might be in the scullery.

  419. Sometimes they might be in the background.

  420. Sometimes they might be

  421. in a seemingly low level position.

  422. Sometimes they might be taking care

  423. of a screaming baby in the nursery.

  424. Who else wants to do that?

  425. I don't.

  426. I don't want to take it.

  427. I don't covet their role in the nursery.

  428. No, thank you.

  429. But they are making sure

  430. that the hungry are fed.

  431. They are making sure

  432. that the babies are comforted.

  433. They're making sure

  434. that the ministry gets done.

  435. They're making sure

  436. that people get taught the word of God.

  437. They're making sure

  438. that prayers are continually

  439. being prayed on behalf

  440. of those in need.

  441. In the kingdom of God,

  442. there is no menial work.

  443. It is all missionary work.

  444. It is all important work

  445. for God's kingdom.

  446. Ordinary, what we might call

  447. ordinary work,

  448. is the invisible strength

  449. of God's kingdom.

  450. When we're lacking

  451. that ordinary work,

  452. something breaks.

  453. we're weaker.

  454. So, I was supposed

  455. to take you to this slide

  456. when I read that word out,

  457. kopio.

  458. But that's the Greek word

  459. that Paul was using there.

  460. Then we go to number three,

  461. verse seven.

  462. Would you go back with me

  463. to verse seven,

  464. Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  465. There's a married couple here,

  466. Andronicus and Junia,

  467. my fellow Jews

  468. who have been in prison with me.

  469. They are outstanding

  470. among the apostles.

  471. They were in Christ

  472. before I was.

  473. Now, if you want to dive deep

  474. on Junia,

  475. there's some controversy

  476. over whether or not

  477. she was an official apostle,

  478. whether she and her husband

  479. were called official apostles,

  480. or were just recognized

  481. by the apostles.

  482. But it seems like

  483. most Bible scholars

  484. who seem to do the best work

  485. and really pour themselves

  486. into the study of the scriptures

  487. and exegete correctly,

  488. they seem to agree

  489. that this title was given

  490. to this married couple,

  491. Andronicus and Junia,

  492. that they were recognized

  493. as apostles.

  494. Now, that could only come

  495. from the apostles themselves

  496. saying,

  497. we recognize you

  498. to be an apostle.

  499. That had to be given

  500. by the apostles.

  501. Each church couldn't just vote

  502. and say,

  503. we're going to vote

  504. on an apostle.

  505. It was different

  506. than a pastor, okay?

  507. Very different.

  508. So this was a very special role,

  509. a very special title.

  510. John Chrysism,

  511. another early church father

  512. who's long been dead,

  513. but whose work was valuable

  514. in the early church,

  515. wrote this about Junia.

  516. He said,

  517. how great is the devotion

  518. to the work of God

  519. that this woman had,

  520. that she should be worthy

  521. of the title,

  522. the appellation,

  523. the title of apostle.

  524. This was rare.

  525. Somebody would be given

  526. this title,

  527. that they would be recognized

  528. by the apostles themselves

  529. in this way.

  530. So we should pay

  531. close attention to this.

  532. What was so special

  533. about this woman?

  534. Well, when we study,

  535. Junia and her husband,

  536. Andronicus,

  537. they had been in prison

  538. with Paul.

  539. How many of y'all know

  540. what Paul got put in prison for?

  541. You're thinking through it?

  542. You don't have to raise your hand.

  543. You can just say it out.

  544. What did Paul go to prison for?

  545. Yes, he did.

  546. Preaching the gospel.

  547. He would run afoul

  548. of the local government.

  549. He'd run afoul

  550. of the Roman government.

  551. He would get put

  552. in local prison.

  553. He'd get put on prison

  554. transport ships

  555. and get transported

  556. to another island.

  557. And then he would get

  558. shipwrecked along the way.

  559. And crazy things

  560. would happen

  561. in the life of Paul.

  562. Somebody's got to make

  563. a movie at some point

  564. about the life of Paul.

  565. It would be amazing

  566. cinema.

  567. But clearly,

  568. these women,

  569. this man and his wife,

  570. were out there

  571. preaching the gospel

  572. with Paul

  573. because they got jailed too.

  574. So these people

  575. had a side-by-side

  576. laboring role

  577. in the ministry

  578. of Paul.

  579. Think of the resurrection

  580. in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  581. Jesus chose someone

  582. to be called

  583. the apostle

  584. to the apostles.

  585. You know who that was?

  586. Mary Magdalene.

  587. He entrusted

  588. the most important news

  589. in human history

  590. to a woman first.

  591. Junia,

  592. being called

  593. an apostle

  594. by the apostles

  595. of the early church,

  596. reminds us that

  597. God does not

  598. call the qualified.

  599. He qualifies

  600. the cult.

  601. Regardless of

  602. your gender,

  603. regardless of

  604. your status,

  605. God can use

  606. you

  607. in powerful

  608. ways.

  609. Just like

  610. he used

  611. these women.

  612. So,

  613. we have

  614. the planters,

  615. Phoebe and Priscilla.

  616. We have

  617. the ordinary laborers,

  618. Mary,

  619. Tryphena,

  620. Tryphosa,

  621. Persis.

  622. We have

  623. the apostle,

  624. Junia.

  625. And now we're

  626. going to bring it back

  627. to the heart

  628. of the home.

  629. And this is

  630. the mother

  631. of Rufus.

  632. Paul said

  633. of the mother

  634. of Rufus

  635. back in verse 13,

  636. the last verse

  637. we read,

  638. Greet Rufus

  639. chosen in the Lord

  640. and his mother

  641. who has been

  642. a mother

  643. to me too.

  644. This woman

  645. was not seemingly

  646. related to Paul.

  647. She was the mother

  648. of Rufus

  649. and Alexander.

  650. Rufus is mentioned

  651. here.

  652. Alexander is mentioned

  653. in Mark 15.

  654. Let's go over

  655. to Mark 15.

  656. Look at verse 21.

  657. A certain man

  658. from Cyrene,

  659. the father

  660. of Alexander

  661. and Rufus

  662. was passing by

  663. on his way

  664. from in

  665. from the country

  666. and they forced him

  667. to carry the cross.

  668. Now y'all,

  669. I wasn't there.

  670. So I can't say

  671. with absolute certainty.

  672. But the vast

  673. consensus

  674. among those

  675. historians

  676. and Bible scholars

  677. who have done

  678. the work

  679. of piecing

  680. the scriptures

  681. and historical documents

  682. together

  683. believe

  684. that the Rufus

  685. mentioned right here

  686. in Romans 16

  687. is the same Rufus

  688. who was the son

  689. of Simon

  690. from Cyrene

  691. who carried

  692. the cross

  693. of Jesus.

  694. And his wife

  695. became like a mother

  696. to Paul

  697. who God used

  698. arguably more

  699. powerfully

  700. with greater impact

  701. than anybody else

  702. we've seen

  703. in the early church history.

  704. So we thank God

  705. for the letters

  706. of Paul

  707. that he used

  708. so powerfully

  709. and is still using

  710. today

  711. to teach churches

  712. like ours.

  713. But then we've also

  714. got to thank

  715. Simon's wife

  716. who God used

  717. so powerfully

  718. in his life.

  719. She wasn't

  720. his mother.

  721. His mother

  722. likely was not

  723. a follower

  724. of Christ.

  725. but Simon's

  726. wife was.

  727. And because

  728. God allowed

  729. Simon

  730. to be picked

  731. from the crowd

  732. that day

  733. Simon

  734. from Cyrene

  735. Cyrene was a country

  736. in Africa

  737. a region

  738. in Africa

  739. about where

  740. Libya is today

  741. seemingly

  742. he was

  743. a Hellenistic

  744. or Greek Jew

  745. who was probably

  746. living there

  747. at the time

  748. and he came back

  749. during the Passover week

  750. to celebrate

  751. the Passover

  752. back in his homeland

  753. and the Roman soldiers

  754. plucked him

  755. from the crowd

  756. well

  757. I think God

  758. allowed that to happen.

  759. God directed

  760. their choice

  761. to the right man

  762. for the job

  763. because then

  764. when Simon

  765. carried the cross

  766. for Jesus

  767. seemingly

  768. if he hadn't yet

  769. he converted

  770. his whole family

  771. to the way

  772. of Christ

  773. and then Rufus

  774. was chosen

  775. in the Lord

  776. his son

  777. because

  778. Simon had been

  779. chosen by the Lord

  780. even though

  781. those Roman soldiers

  782. thought they were

  783. doing the choosing

  784. God directed

  785. their choice

  786. to the person

  787. you see how it all

  788. fits together

  789. because then

  790. Rufus was chosen

  791. in the Lord

  792. his whole family

  793. turned

  794. his wife

  795. became a mother

  796. figure

  797. to Paul

  798. father of the

  799. early church

  800. so let me say this

  801. to the moms

  802. in the room

  803. God has given

  804. you your children

  805. to have an impact

  806. to

  807. but you can have

  808. so much of an impact

  809. even beyond

  810. your own children

  811. Rufus' mom

  812. was not content

  813. just to be a mother

  814. to Alexander

  815. and Rufus

  816. God used her

  817. as a matriarch

  818. of the early church

  819. to fill that role

  820. of support

  821. encouragement

  822. love

  823. teaching

  824. to Paul himself

  825. so

  826. it's appropriate

  827. on Mother's Day

  828. to recognize

  829. who Paul looked at

  830. as a mother

  831. in his life

  832. Paul was a giant

  833. of the faith

  834. he was a Pharisee

  835. he knew the scriptures

  836. knew them inside

  837. and out

  838. his teaching

  839. often revealed

  840. that

  841. but he had

  842. a spiritual mother

  843. that God brought

  844. into his life

  845. and he felt

  846. that it would

  847. not be complete

  848. this letter

  849. to Rome

  850. would not be complete

  851. without recognizing

  852. her

  853. and the impact

  854. she had

  855. and then he goes

  856. on and greets more

  857. there are a few

  858. more women

  859. that he greets

  860. but this is all

  861. the time we have

  862. to highlight today

  863. so let me conclude

  864. with this

  865. the most important

  866. credential

  867. in God's kingdom

  868. is answering

  869. his call

  870. you might not

  871. have all the

  872. Pharisee training

  873. like Paul had

  874. you might not

  875. have all the

  876. seminary degrees

  877. you might not

  878. have all the

  879. history of

  880. serving in

  881. particular roles

  882. in the church

  883. etc etc

  884. the most important

  885. credential that

  886. every single one

  887. of these women

  888. answered

  889. in God's kingdom

  890. is answering

  891. his call

  892. if you say

  893. yes to Jesus

  894. there's no limit

  895. on what Jesus

  896. can do

  897. through you

  898. whether you're

  899. a husband

  900. or a wife

  901. a father

  902. or a mother

  903. a sister

  904. or a brother

  905. a woman

  906. or a man

  907. a child

  908. or an adult

  909. a teenager

  910. or college age

  911. regardless of

  912. your age

  913. your gender

  914. your wealth

  915. your abilities

  916. if you say

  917. yes to Jesus

  918. he can use you

  919. in ways

  920. that you will

  921. never dream

  922. Galatians chapter

  923. three verse

  924. twenty eight

  925. Paul affirms

  926. this

  927. he says

  928. in Christ

  929. there is neither

  930. Jew nor Gentile

  931. there is neither

  932. slave nor free

  933. man

  934. there is neither

  935. male nor female

  936. we are all

  937. one

  938. under Christ

  939. so Phoebe

  940. shows us

  941. that the gospel

  942. is authoritative

  943. she carried

  944. the authority

  945. of

  946. and Junia

  947. as well

  948. but she carried

  949. the authority

  950. of the ordination

  951. into the

  952. the deaconhood

  953. from the early church

  954. and the apostles

  955. Junia carried

  956. that authority

  957. of the apostles

  958. that they had

  959. bestowed upon her

  960. collaborative

  961. the gospel

  962. is collaborative

  963. this letter

  964. was collaborative

  965. and Priscilla

  966. shows us that

  967. as they were

  968. co-workers

  969. co-laborers

  970. with Christ

  971. it is transformational

  972. we see what happened

  973. in the lives

  974. of all these women

  975. but Junia

  976. specifically

  977. having been in prison

  978. and then God

  979. transformed

  980. what seemed to be

  981. a terrible thing

  982. a setback

  983. into a powerful thing

  984. that God used

  985. to spread the gospel

  986. message

  987. every time

  988. the Romans

  989. or the Jewish

  990. traditionalists

  991. tried to stamp out

  992. this way of Christ

  993. God would use it

  994. to transform

  995. more lives

  996. and more hearts

  997. and the mother

  998. of Rufus

  999. shows us

  1000. that it is relational

1001. that is one of the most

  1002. important aspects

  1003. all are important aspects

  1004. but that relational part

  1005. is maybe the part

  1006. we feel the most

  1007. that warmth

  1008. that dependability

  1009. that steadiness

1010. so we thank you moms

  1011. we thank you ladies

  1012. for your service

1013. back in the day of Jesus

1014. back in the day of Paul

  1015. and all throughout

1016. the history of the church

  1017. to today

  1018. right here

  1019. in First Baptist Church

  1020. Henrietta, Texas

  1021. we thank you

  1022. for your giftings

  1023. in the spirit

  1024. we thank you

  1025. for your willingness

  1026. to serve us

  1027. to serve the Lord

  1028. to serve our church

  1029. to serve your families

  1030. to serve your community

1031. the gospel came to Rome

1032. in the hands of a woman

  1033. the gospel has come

  1034. to your heart

  1035. so many of you

  1036. through the hands

  1037. through the love

  1038. of those

  1039. who have labored

  1040. for you

1041. may we be a church

  1042. that honors the women

  1043. the mothers

  1044. in our lives

  1045. not just with flowers

1046. today in just a moment

  1047. but with the dignity

  1048. the respect

  1049. and the appreciation

  1050. that both Paul

  1051. and Christ

  1052. showed to mothers

  1053. and women

  1054. would you join me

  1055. in praying

  1056. God you took time

  1057. out of your ministry

  1058. for everyone

  1059. for the great

  1060. for the small

  1061. for the old

  1062. for the young

1063. for men and women alike

  1064. those who wrote

  1065. the records

  1066. of your ministry

  1067. on this earth

1068. knew that it would be

  1069. important to highlight

  1070. the women

  1071. the mothers

  1072. who you used

  1073. powerfully

  1074. in your kingdom work

  1075. and Paul did

  1076. the same thing

1077. so we would be wrong

  1078. to not recognize

  1079. the impact

  1080. they had

  1081. and on this

  1082. Mother's Day

  1083. I pray that we

  1084. would not only

  1085. just say thank you

  1086. to mom

  1087. and say happy

  1088. Mother's Day

  1089. hand them a flower

  1090. or maybe a card

  1091. or whatever else

  1092. we have planned

1093. maybe give them a call

  1094. if they're not here

  1095. but God

  1096. I pray that we

  1097. would take it

  1098. a step further

  1099. and say

  1100. we recognize

  1101. the impact

  1102. you've had on us

  1103. we've recognized

  1104. the impact

  1105. that God

  1106. has had

  1107. through you

  1108. that we would

  1109. give them

  1110. the dignity

  1111. the honor

  1112. the respect

  1113. that you

  1114. showed them

  1115. that we would

  1116. not stifle

  1117. when you want

  1118. to use them

  1119. in your work

  1120. that we would

  1121. celebrate that

  1122. that we would

  1123. support it

  1124. God however

  1125. you choose

  1126. to work

  1127. through the lives

  1128. of women

  1129. in your church

  1130. I pray that

  1131. we would not

  1132. stand in the way

  1133. but just like

  1134. the early church

  1135. did

  1136. that we would

  1137. say yes

  1138. God is working

  1139. through them

  1140. we celebrate

  1141. that

  1142. we honor

  1143. it

  1144. we make

  1145. room for

  1146. it

  1147. God

  1148. work

  1149. through

  1150. every one

  1151. of us

  1152. if there's

  1153. somebody

  1154. here

  1155. who doesn't

  1156. know you

  1157. today

  1158. I pray

  1159. that they

  1160. would see

  1161. that you

  1162. are a God

  1163. who values

  1164. every one

  1165. of them

  1166. everyone

  1167. equally

  1168. that there

  1169. is no one

  1170. who would

  1171. say I'm

  1172. too far

  1173. gone

  1174. I'm out

  1175. of the

  1176. reach

  1177. of God's

  1178. love

  1179. every one

  1180. of us

  1181. regardless

  1182. of status

  1183. regardless

  1184. of identity

  1185. you love

  1186. us all

  1187. and you

  1188. died for

  1189. us all

  1190. you rose

  1191. for us

  1192. all

  1193. and you

  1194. offer

  1195. each one

  1196. of us

  1197. eternal

  1198. life

  1199. through

  1200. Christ

  1201. with our

  1202. heads

  1203. bowed

  1204. and our

  1205. eyes

  1206. closed

  1207. I'll

  1208. just

  1209. ask

  1210. this

  1211. question

  1212. church

  1213. there's

  1214. someone

  1215. today

  1216. maybe a

  1217. guest

  1218. or maybe

  1219. someone

  1220. who's been

  1221. coming here

  1222. for a long

  1223. time

  1224. and you

  1225. would say

  1226. I know

  1227. today is

  1228. the day

  1229. that I

  1230. need to

  1231. surrender

  1232. to Jesus

  1233. I need

  1234. to open

  1235. my heart

  1236. to Jesus

  1237. and say

  1238. I want

  1239. to follow

  1240. you

  1241. I believe

  1242. I believe

  1243. that you

  1244. are God

  1245. I believe

  1246. that you

  1247. died on

  1248. the cross

  1249. to take

  1250. the burden

  1251. of my sin

  1252. to forgive

  1253. me

  1254. I believe

  1255. that you

  1256. rose

  1257. from the

  1258. dead

  1259. by the

  1260. power

  1261. of God

  1262. and I

  1263. believe

  1264. you're

  1265. alive

  1266. today

  1267. and I

  1268. want to

  1269. follow

  1270. you

  1271. through

  1272. the rest

  1273. of my

  1274. life

  1275. if that's

  1276. you

  1277. today

  1278. would you

  1279. slip

  1280. your hand

  1281. up

  1282. and I'd

  1283. love to

  1284. pray for

  1285. you

  1286. thank you

  1287. how many

  1288. of you

  1289. would say

  1290. God

  1291. is working

  1292. on my

  1293. heart

  1294. about

  1295. something

  1296. else

  1297. and I

  1298. need

  1299. prayer

  1300. would you

  1301. slip

  1302. your hand

  1303. up

  1304. and I'd

  1305. love to

  1306. pray for

  1307. you

  1308. as well

  1309. I need

  1310. prayer

  1311. thank you

  1312. thank you

  1313. thank you

  1314. how many

  1315. of you

  1316. well I'm

  1317. not going to

  1318. ask you to

  1319. raise your

  1320. hand right

  1321. now but I'll

  1322. just throw

  1323. this out

  1324. there

  1325. if anyone

  1326. would like

  1327. to join

  1328. us in

  1329. membership

  1330. in this

  1331. church

  1332. if you've

  1333. been maybe

  1334. attending

  1335. for a little

  1336. while

  1337. and you say

  1338. I'd like

  1339. to commit

  1340. I'd like

  1341. to make

  1342. this my

  1343. home

  1344. church

  1345. and be

  1346. a part

  1347. of this

  1348. body

  1349. of Jesus

  1350. followers

  1351. please come

  1352. down front

  1353. after the

  1354. service

  1355. is over

  1356. or meet

  1357. me in the

  1358. back

  1359. I would love

  1360. to set up

  1361. a time

  1362. to talk

  1363. with you

  1364. and discuss

  1365. what it

  1366. looks like

  1367. to join

  1368. us as we

  1369. follow Jesus

  1370. we want to

  1371. welcome you

  1372. into our

  1373. number

  1374. God thank you

  1375. for meeting

  1376. with us

  1377. today

  1378. we love

  1379. you

  1380. we want

  1381. to do

  1382. our best

  1383. to follow

  1384. you

  1385. and to

  1386. honor you

  1387. as we

  1388. also honor

  1389. the moms

  1390. in our

  1391. lives

  1392. in Jesus

  1393. name we

  1394. pray

  1395. amen
