Made For Mission: Bring Someone With You

We are all made for mission. In fact, we're in the last week of an exciting

six-week series and six-week journey that we've been on called Made for Mission.

And yes, this will be an Easter message, but a little bit different than you're used to hearing.

But yes, resurrection stories are all through this and all talking about Jesus too right here.

So over the past five weeks, though, up to date, we've talked about how all

Christians, again, have been

called by God to join in his mission to reach the world, which by the way,

there wouldn't be a mission if it were not for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

And so we're called to that. And we've talked about how we're supposed to,

you know, what we're supposed to say, who we're supposed to say it to,

why we should live on mission to begin with.

Now, if you've missed any of those first five weeks, we do have a podcast that's out there.

You can go to the church website, access it through that or our Facebook page

and catch up on those that say made for mission. It'll have different titles

there after that for the past five weeks, and today's will be out there a little

bit later today, Lord willing.

But by show of hands this morning, how many of you know your grandparents' first names?

Do many of you know your great-grandparents' first names?

I see some, but not as many, right? Well, I've got some unfortunate news,

though, partly today for everybody here.

You're more than likely only a few decades away or so for some of you from being

totally forgot brother jude why the barber i mean that's that's kind of like debbie downer right.

You've got to listen to this. Here's the good news, as we see on this slide this morning.

God's calling on your life is always bigger than your lifetime.

God's calling on your life is always bigger than your lifetime.

And while just about all of us here today can't go back three generations in

our own family trees, that's not the case with our spiritual family.

And based on how the Bible reads, I have a suspicion that in heaven we'll be

able to study our spiritual family trees forward and backwards, right?

Since God's outside of time, I wonder if we'll be able to see how ultimately

that we became Christ followers and be able to follow up to see those ripples

throughout our lifetime that were there impacting those in the future spiritually,

kind of like Ancestor.com, but on steroids, right?

Let me just say, though, if you're brand new today to this God-Jesus thing,

and you're just checking it out, if that's somebody here today,

I'm glad you're here, because you need to know that God's got something bigger for your life,

something bigger for your life, and he's inviting you to join him in his activity

and where he's already working, because God is already at work, my friends.

And today, we're going to study a scene in the life of a guy named Peter. Y'all remember Peter?

He was one of those kind of, you know, insert foot, open mouth kind of guys.

He was always getting into trouble for speaking before he thought about it, right?

And if you've ever done that before, then you'll be able to relate to him,

all right? Anybody can relate to Peter?

Okay, I see some hands just slipping up easily, right?

If you ever made bonehead mistakes, Peter's your guy, okay?

But today we're going to read two back-to-back stories found in the book of

Luke. So if you'll turn to Luke chapter 8, if you will, this morning,

Luke chapter 8, we'll start with verses 40 through 42.

Luke 8, 40 through 42, it says, Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him,

for they were all expecting him.

Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus' feet,

pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter,

a girl of about 12, was dying.

So as we pause here a moment, think, Jairus meets Jesus and his disciples at the docks.

His description here in this passage as the synagogue leader was a big deal, by the way.

In that culture, I want you to think about city council member,

city council member, even mayor of that area.

That's how big a deal it was. This could be a really big opportunity,

as we see on this next slide, for this small startup movement led by Jesus.

Because if a synagogue leader were to become a follower, he might influence

the whole city and even his surrounding region.

You've probably heard reports of different celebrities that say they got saved.

Some of them, hey, may have generally been saved, right?

But we don't know everybody's hearts, but man, we see some fruit sometimes and we're like, yes.

But so often I think the church loves to take advantage of a celebrity influence

to spread the gospel sometimes, right?

But I don't think that's normally how God works, how he chooses to work.

God loves doing extraordinary things through very ordinary people.

Y'all probably heard me share this before. God's not looking for your ability.

He's looking for your availability.

He's looking for our obedience, our availability to say, Lord.

Whatever you want me to do, whatever you have for me, Lord, I'm going to say yes to it.

We'll talk about that more as we go forward this morning. But I don't know what

Jesus is thinking, but I bet the disciples here in this passage are not blind

to the opportunity at hand,

which meant that they better get to Jairus' house fast before they miss it, right?

But check out what happens next.

Let's look in Luke 8 still, verse 42, the latter half.

It says, as Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.

And the woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years,

but no one could heal her.

She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

Who touched me, Jesus said. He asked the question, right?

When they all denied it, Peter said, Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.

But Jesus said, someone touched me. I know that power has gone out from me.

Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell

at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched

him and how she had been instantly healed.

Then he said to her, daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.

You know, it's almost comical, though, how this scene starts.

Massive crowds. Y'all got the picture, right? Massive crowds are surrounding

Jesus, you know, pressing in to get closer to him.

Yet he stops in mid stride to ask, who touched me?

I mean, it's comical, really. I picture Peter here probably rolling his eyes, right?

You know, Jesus there, look at all these people pressing against you.

Everybody's touching you, okay? That's probably what he's thinking.

But it would be like crowd surfing, Brother Ronnie, at a rock concert,

which I know you do a lot, right?

But, you know, crowd surfing at a rock concert and then stopping to ask who

touched you. It makes no sense.

What also makes no sense, get this today, church. is that Jesus stops on his

way to a big ministry opportunity to talk to someone that everyone else ignored.

Anybody ever had inconvenience to your schedule before? You ever had something

you, I mean, it might've been something that you, it was something great for

God, even some kind of great thing that was going to be accomplished, you think.

And you have those minor anoints, as sometimes you call them,

or the things that slow you down.

Well, there are a lot of things, as we say on this next slide,

that we can probably guess about this woman.

First of all, she's poor. In another of the gospels, we read that she spent

literally all her money trying to find a cure for her issue of bleeding,

but nothing had worked. So she's poor. She's probably all alone.

We sure don't hear of anybody else with her in this thing.

And she also probably has been seriously shamed in this very city.

You see, the religious leaders taught that diseases were a punishment from God

and thus people, you know, you should stay away from these people, right?

And so, plus all that baggage that she has, all of that, she takes this massive risk.

And based on Old Testament law, some of you probably already thought of this,

that the people would believe that this woman's disease would permanently make

her unclean, and anything that she touched would become unclean as well.

And people know about this woman. She has a reputation, and she pushed her way

through the crowd to get to who?

To get to Jesus, what do

you think she most likely had to endure as she did that what

are you doing here go home where you belong

you don't need to be out here with all these people right she was probably shoved

to the side and giving dirty looks even yet get this church in all this the

woman is relentless to get to Jesus guess what it pays off and her whole life

changes in a moment 12 years, y'all.

12 years she's dealt with this. You have no idea, church, when God wants to

use you, your greatest impact will probably come at a time you're least expecting it.

You see, for the woman here, she had been suffering with this disease for how long?

12 years. She had prayed for God to remove it, remove it from her multiple times

a day over a decade, spend all her money.

And if you walked in here and you've been carrying around a prayer request,

some of you may have today, for a very long time, maybe what seems like forever,

learn a lesson from this woman.

Don't give up. Run to Jesus. Run to Jesus.

There's always hope church that he can do more in a moment than we can do in our lifetime,

man you're talking about the power of the spirit you're

talking about god's redemptive work all of it look here at luke chapter 8 verse

Luke 8:49

49 is where we pick up while jesus was still speaking someone came from the

house of jeres the synagogue leader your daughter is dead he said don't bother the teacher anymore.

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, don't be afraid, just believe, and she will be healed.

I'm just telling y'all, you're talking about resurrection power, right?

You're talking about the author of life here. And when he arrived at the house

of Jairus, it says in the scripture, he did not let anyone go in with him except

Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother.

Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her.

Stop wailing, Jesus said. She is not dead, but asleep.

They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

But he took her by the hand, and he said, My child, get up.

Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anybody about what

had happened. You think they followed that?

So they get to Jairus' place. Y'all see that here in scripture.

And his daughter is what? She's already dead.

Not mostly dead, like in the prince's bride, right? She's dead,

dead. She's already dead.

I can probably picture you too, probably some of his disciples,

maybe slightly shaking their heads, you know, probably thinking this,

like maybe some of us have thought before.

If we didn't have that stop along the way, I bet we would have made it.

If that woman hadn't interrupted Jesus and caused all that commotion,

I bet we would have made it.

But Jesus grabs a couple of the guys and the girl's parents,

and he goes up to see the dead girl we see in the passage.

And he says to them, she's just sleeping.

And probably out of pain, the parents, his disciples, and others close to the

family probably nervously laugh. Could probably picture that a little bit.

But Jesus ignores here that apparent lack of faith.

You notice that. What does he do? He grabs the girl's hand, and he raises her

from the dead. I mean, come on, Brother Jimmy.

Think about this girl's life. What a story for her to share.

Think about the parents. The synagogue leader of the area just became a follower of Christ, right?

And so as we see in this next slide, I got to ask you this. How old was the girl?

How long did the woman suffer from bleeding? How cool is it to think that God

has been waiting for this amazing day for 12 years?

And I want y'all to think today, how many of your prayer requests has God already

picked a day when he's going to answer it and he's eagerly waiting to see the look on your face?

We're talking about a God who is alive and well, and he is working, church.

He is working. I've read these two stories before, but to be honest with you,

I think I missed the most impactful part of them.

While Jesus heals the bleeding woman and he raises the preteen from the dead

here, it was huge. It was both huge miracles.

I don't think they were the most impactful thing. Well, Brother Joe,

what is it? Well, as I look at it, I think this is it.

When Jesus arrived at the house of Jairus, it says, he did not let anyone go

in with him except Peter, John, and James.

And the child's father and mother. Why Peter? He had just questioned Jesus in

public a minute and a half ago.

Shouldn't he by this point have just learned to stop talking back to Jesus, right?

Then Jesus brings him along to Jairus' house, and he laughs when Jesus remarks

that the girl is sleeping.

Again, church, I want you all to get this today. God's calling on your life

is bigger than your lifetime.

That's not true automatically, but if you join God in his mission,

if you live on mission, it will be.

So how do I do that? That might be your question. That's kind of been the whole

point of this whole series, but I want to end with this one huge truth as we look on the slide ahead.

Here it is. You ready? Bring someone with you.

Bring someone with you. As you live the mission you were made for, don't go alone, church.

Bring someone along for the ride.

This may be the single greatest leadership lesson I think we learn from the life of Jesus.

You could make a strong case, by the way, that Jesus is the greatest leader

of all time. He never wrote any books.

He never held a public office. He never went outside one small area of the world.

He was only on the public scene for a little over three years, and he died at age 33.

Yet here we're 2,000 years later today, and there are over 2 billion people

following him from all corners of the earth in hundreds of different languages.

The movement that he started is growing faster now worldwide than ever before.

That's pretty good leadership, right? Pretty good leadership.

Bring someone with you. You know how many times it says that Jesus took his

disciples and they went somewhere in scripture? Anybody ever counted that?

Me either, because I started counting through the gospels and I lost track because

just about every time he went somewhere, he intentionally brought people with him.

There are examples when he got alone, of course, when he pulled away to pray.

Obviously, he did certain things alone. But the evidence is abundantly clear

that with incredible intentionality, Eastwood, Jesus brought people with him.

Listen to the last words of Jesus. Let's look at Matthew 28, verses 19 and 20.

By the way, none of this is possible, again, without the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

What does he say here? You're familiar with this. This is our theme, right?

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey

everything I have commanded you.

And surely I'm with you always to the very end of the age.

You know, in the Greek, the literal translation is as you go,

as you go, make disciples. What does that mean?

As you go to work tomorrow, as you go to school tomorrow, as you go about your

day-to-day business, you may be retired, it doesn't matter.

As you live your life, as you go, make disciples of all nations.

Think about the different applications.

We're going to look at the next slide here, but to this command,

I thought about a couple here.

One is definitely that as you go through your life, intentionally share Jesus,

right, with people that you meet and then disciple them in their faith.

That is an obvious application.

But the other application I've never heard someone say, but it's obvious from watching Jesus's life.

Don't just disciple the people that you meet along the way, but also bring people

along with you and disciple them while you go through your day-to-day responsibilities.

You see, Jesus ends here in this passage with promising what? What did he promise us?

He will be with us. Always, right? Always, to the very end of the age.

If he's truly in the driver's seat of your life, then it's not so much you bringing

him with you, right? But instead, he's bringing you with him.

And what he did for the disciples' church 2,000 years ago, Jesus still wants to do in our lives today.

As he disciples us now, he invites us to do the same with other people.

I'm going to give you a few practical examples. Listen to this this morning.

Because of the resurrection of Christ, as we live on mission,

as we go, parents, bring your kids with you.

Look, when you have an opportunity, like I can remember we had an opportunity

to do a backyard Bible club, right?

Get the kids involved. Bring them with you. When you have a mission trip, bring them with you.

When you have an opportunity to share the gospel with people that are on the

street or whatever, wherever you're at, bring your kids with you.

Let them see it in action. Let them experience it as you do it. Disciple them.

Parents, bring your kids' friends with you too.

I remember we had a family that lived next door to us for a long time,

and their kids really almost became our kids, right?

I mean, they would come over, they would eat supper with us, all this kind of stuff.

They would do life with us, do things. If we were going to church or if we were

doing something in a backyard, like I said, Bible club, whatever it happened

to be, they were there too as a part of it.

They were there when we prayed and we did a devotion and we prayed for God to

bless the food, right? All those things, they were there through it all.

And I want you to get today, church, that your family may be the closest to

Jesus that your kids' friends ever get.

As you serve in ministry, invite someone to serve with you.

Hey, would you like to try and help me to go out here and do this ministry project in the community?

Can I bring you with me to go visit this person who needs to hear about Jesus?

I mean, you just name it opportunity after opportunity. Bring somebody with

you with friends and family.

Bring them with you as you try to live out your faith.

Invite them to church. Invite them to help you with a service project or to

coach your kids soccer team, right?

Together. My guess is that none of this is surprising to any of us as we sit

here today, but I want y'all to get this today.

Several studies still have shown that the average churchgoer,

those of us who are here today celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,

who are saying, hallelujah, ain't no grave going to hold my body down, right?

Who have resurrection power living inside of them. The average churchgoer in

North America brings an average of zero lost people with them to church in a given year.

The number is so low, Eastwood, that they have to round down to nobody.

I think the reasons why we normally don't bring somebody with us probably are

the reasons that Jesus would have had with Peter.

It's just easier to do it on my own. You never know what's going to come out

of old Peter, his loud mouth, right?

You never know. I just don't think they could handle it. Just a minute before,

Peter totally messed up, right?

So why do we think he's going to do better this time?

All those excuses. But I want y'all to get this today.

As we look ahead to this next slide, really, they're just two possibilities, two possible outcomes.

If you bring somebody with you, number one, your assessment might be wrong,

right? You might see it's wrong.

You invite somebody to come with you on mission and you think they can't handle

it. But actually, there was way more in them than you thought.

Or number two, you could be right. But guess what? God is going to use their failure to grow them.

I don't know about y'all. Some of my greatest times of spiritual growth in my

life have been my greatest failures.

Anybody here ever grown spiritually through a failure?

You see, that's actually the primary way I think we all grow anyway.

For example, parents, parents, listen up. Your job is not to protect your kids from ever failing.

Your job is to raise them up to trust God.

So what happens with Peter? Well, I think he got it.

I mean, if Jesus can raise the

dead, even death is not an insurmountable barrier when it comes to Jesus.

What if Jesus didn't bring Peter along? You ever thought about that in this

passage? What if he just did? He left the disciples out of all this.

Well, I can simply say this today, church, that Peter wouldn't have learned that lesson.

And this future scene that I'm going to share with you now as we close probably

wouldn't have ever happened.

Let's look quickly at Acts chapter 9, verses 36 through 42. Acts 9, 30, 60, 42.

Acts 9:36–42

It says, In Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha. In Greek, her name is Dorcas.

She was always doing good and helping the poor.

About that time, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.

Lydia was near Joppa. So when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydia,

they sent two men to him and urged him, Please come at once.

Peter went with them, and when he arrived, he was taken upstairs to the room.

All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other

clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

Peter sent them all out of the room. Then he got down on his knees and prayed.

Turning toward the dead woman, he said, Get this, y'all.

This is Peter, the one who laughed when Jesus said she's not dead but asleep.

And he prayed, and he said, Tabitha, get up.

She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up.

He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers,

especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.

This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

You see, Peter heals Tabitha in an eerily similar way that Jesus had healed Jairus' daughter.

Many people came to believe in Jesus all throughout Joppa simply because Jesus

took Peter with him years earlier.

Y'all, God is a connecting the dots kind of God, isn't he?

We have no idea no idea eastwood what god wants to do through us and what he

wants to do it in us and when he wants to do it right we just don't know we're

on this journey with him right,

god's calling on your life is bigger than your lifetime there's only one thing

that will last church the stuff you're stressing about now won't don't stress

about temporary fading things church,

Don't do that. It won't last.

It probably will be no big deal in a couple of years.

And your own great grandkids that wouldn't even exist, by the way,

if it were not for you, they won't even know your name.

But if you bring somebody with you, that will be celebrated for all of eternity.

How about less investing in things that last forever?

And I want you to know something today. Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

by the way, the most historically proven fact in all of history,

there's more evidence for the resurrection than any event that's ever happened in history.

The evidence is overwhelming. In fact, probably some of you remember these two

guys that one of them was Josh McDowell that set out to disprove the resurrection, right?

Because he thought Christians, you know, were just crazy nuts, right?

And his thinking was, hey, if I can disprove the resurrection,

everything will crumble. And he was right.

And he said, I don't know a journey to do just that. And guess what?

All the evidence was so overwhelming, he gave his heart to Christ.

He said, I have no choice.

Lee Strobel, a reporter, also that same similar type concept,

set out to disprove the resurrection, destroy it all, right?

Take care of this Christianity.

Evidence so overwhelming for the resurrection of Jesus Christ that he had no

choice but to say, I got to believe. I got to believe.

What is God calling you to?

Who can you bring with you on mission. Who in your life does not know God?

I mean, did Jesus rise from the dead just so we could come to church on Easter

Sunday, go home and eat lunch and live like everybody else the rest of the week?

Is that why he rose from the dead? Did Jesus give us a mission,

a task at hand in Matthew chapter 28?

Do we not have a motto Eastwood that every week that we say together that totally

complements the Great Commission, that pushes us forward into that, right?

Who in your life doesn't know God? Who will you invite to pursue God with you?

Bring somebody with you.

Don't lose an opportunity, y'all. Let me tell you something.

Over the past few years here, and that's all I've known, right,

the times I've been here, but I can just simply say I've seen God do great things.

I still believe God is doing good things, great things. But I've also seen just

as specifically over the last year or less that some of the greatest attacks

against our church have come because people have wanted to serve God in a huge

way. I've just seen the devil attack, right?

Or circumstances attack families, right?

And we've seen all the attacks that have come. And we've also seen that sometimes

there may even be, Brother Ronnie, a little bit of complacency that has set in.

But I want you all to know today that if Jesus is alive, if we have this mission

that we talk about, that's why we're here.

That's why you should be here, right, this morning. You're on mission.

Y'all, if this is why we're here and we're on mission, it's time to bring somebody with us.

It's time to get in the game. It's time to get involved.

It's time to have a burden for the lost.

And by the way, we're starting the way of the master evangelism training this Wednesday night.

I'd love to have as many of you can be here with us Wednesday night at six o'clock.

Brother Aaron and I are going to be tag teaming on this throughout the time

together over the weeks ahead.

But I encourage you, maybe you said, hey, I don't know how to share my faith.

Hey, come on, learn with us.

Go on the ride with us. Get some real world application.

But I want to introduce you to a phrase as we close. And this is a perfect response,

I think, to what we've been talking about for the past six weeks.

And here it is on this last slide.

Will you put your yes on the table? Will you put your yes on the table?

When it comes to God, in other words, will your answer be yes before you even

know what the question is?

Will you put your yes on the table? You see, so many of us will bend our schedules

like crazy to do whatever we want to do.

But when it comes to the work of God and the mission he's called us to,

somehow it always seems to take a back seat.

Yet we say we serve a risen Savior.

Come on, church. It is time to take this seriously.

Will you put your yes on the table? Will you put it on the table no matter what?

God, I don't know where, how, when, or who, but my yes is on the table.

My yes is on the table. I challenge you today. I want y'all to stand with me.

I want you to bow your heads for just a moment. Close your eyes.

Not because there's anything magical about that, but just to shut out some distractions.

And I want you honestly to ask yourself today, is your yes on the table?

Have you been making excuses about serving God on this mission that he's called us to?

Have you been involved in the game? Have you been a part of what God is doing

here at Eastwood Baptist Church?

Do you believe Jesus is alive? Do you believe he rose from the dead?

Man sometimes I wonder you know old Keith Green said years ago Jesus rose from

the dead and I can't even hardly get out of bed.

I mean, we serve a risen Savior, Eastwood.

We serve a Savior that no situation is impossible for Him to heal.

There's no situation that's impossible for Him to rescue.

There's no one who has committed sin so gross that the blood of Jesus,

the blood of Almighty God, can't cover it.

You see, a lot of us, we like to pretend sometimes that we're going to make

everything right ourselves, but we can't do it, and there's none of us good, no, not one.

Only Jesus lived that perfect sinless life. And it's only his righteousness,

the blood of Christ that was shed for us on the cross, and his righteousness

imputed or credited to our account.

When God looks at you, he sees Jesus.

He sees his righteous life lived instead of your sin-filled life, full of filthy rags.

If you've never come to that place today, guess what, church?

You know what? The most important miracle, I believe, the most amazing miracle

that can ever happen is someone who is dead in their sins.

That Jesus Christ performs a spiritual resurrection and he makes them alive

in Christ. He regenerates them in Christ. He calls them to himself.

Today, maybe you have been visiting. Maybe you've been around for a while.

If you have never come to that place in your life where you have repented of

your sin, put your faith and trust in Christ alone.

Not depending on any good works you've done or ever will do.

If you've never done that, today can be your day to experience this resurrection power in your life.

You can be made alive for the first time in Christ Jesus.

All your sins are washed away through the blood of Jesus. That can be you today.

I encourage you right now, if that's you, if you don't know Christ,

maybe you've been coming to

church. Let me just tell you, coming to church is not going to save you.

But if you've come today, if you've experienced that tugging of the Holy Spirit,

And today you know you need to repent and put your faith and trust in Christ alone.

I ask you right now to step out where you are and come down this aisle.

I'll meet you down here. Let me tell you something. You take that one step of

obedience. I promise you Jesus will be with you all the way.

Somebody else here may just need to come forward today. Maybe you want to talk to me. That's great.

I'll be happy to talk to you, pray with you. But maybe you just need to come

to this altar today and say, Lord, I put my yes on the table.

Lord, I'm tired of making excuses. I'm tired of making up things.

Lord, I'm tired of putting you last on my calendar.

Lord, I'm ready to be on mission. I'm ready to bring somebody with me, Lord.

I want to invest my life in something for eternity instead of temporary that's

going to fade away and wash away in the wind.

If that's you today, I encourage you, step out in faith and come to this altar.

Put your yes on the table.

Put it on the table. Father God, right now I pray as you move in our midst,

Lord, that we'll obey you, Lord.

God, I thank you for your resurrection power. I thank you you have conquered

death, hell, and the grave.

Lord, I thank you that you believe so much, Lord, that in those with you,

Lord, in the power of the Spirit working within them, Lord, and Lord,

you bringing them with you,

Lord, that you chose to bring fallen, sinful people, people that needed encouragement,

people that needed to be saved, people that needed to see what it's like to live on mission.

God, I pray you'd move mightily in our midst.
