  1. We're starting Christmas, being the 1st of December, that means there's about 23 sleeps

  2. until we get this Christmas time on the road where we get our turkey on, where we get our

  3. Brussels sprouts on, and we're going to take the whole month of December to look at the

  4. songs in Luke's Gospel about Christmas.

  5. We called it Christmas Hits.

  6. I called it Christmas Hits, it wasn't a democracy.

  7. And today we're looking at the first one, the one that Mary sings.

  8. But I want to ask you, when do you sing?

  9. When do you yourself sing?

  10. In the shower?

  11. I sing in the shower?

  12. I think that's probably the reason Aileen moved to Brussels.

  13. Sing with the hairbrush in front of the mirror?

  14. Maybe in the car on the way to work?

  15. On the terraces?

  16. Do you support Airdrie United?

  17. By yourself?

  18. In the karaoke bar at the Christmas party?

  19. Maybe on the street in church?

  20. Or when no one else is around?

  21. When do you sing?

  22. Why do you sing?

  23. Some people sing laments.

  24. Got it in the Bible, we looked at it yesterday.

  25. By the rivers of Babylon we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion.

  26. Song about sadness, a lament.

  27. Some people sing romantic songs.

  28. The lady in red is dancing with me.

  29. There's nobody else here.

  30. Just you and me.

  31. Some people sing victorious songs.

  32. Championes, championes.

  33. Ole, ole, ole.

  34. I put that on the screen just in case now you've got your own white paper,

  35. you thought you were going to get ideas ahead of your station.

  36. Some people sing joyful songs.

  37. I'm H-A-P-P-Y.

  38. I'm H-A-P-P-Y.

  39. I know I am.

  40. I'm sure I am.

  41. I'm H-A-P-P-Y.

  42. Yet more often than not,

  43. I guess we find ourselves singing worship songs.

  44. So we get to the beginning of Luke's gospel.

  45. Luke, a doctor,

  46. who's carefully investigated the life of Jesus.

  47. And the first two chapters read like a score of a Gilbert and Sullivan musical.

  48. There's a bit of narrative and then someone will break into song.

  49. And there's a bit more narrative and someone will break into song.

  50. Today we're going to look at the first song,

  51. the song that Mary sings.

  52. A worshipful response to the unprecedented favor,

  53. attentive care and outrageous grace

  54. she has been shown by the God of the universe.

  55. It is a joy-filled, praise-home, God-focused,

  56. cosmic chorus of true worship and kingdom insight.

  57. Mary sings a biblical, theological, soteriological, doxological, canticle

  58. about the majesty, might and magnanimous nature of God.

  59. After his introduction to Theophilus, that's verses 1 to 4,

  60. Luke zooms in on an old barren couple.

  61. A couple called Zechariah, who is a priest,

  62. and he's got a wife who's old,

  63. and they have no children because she is barren.

  64. And while Zechariah is taking his turn on duty in the temple,

  65. he's waving a grain offering before the Lord,

  66. and an angel speaks to him.

  67. God hasn't spoken for 400 years.

  68. If you weren't here yesterday,

  69. you'll have trouble remembering that.

  70. If you were here yesterday, no problem.

  71. God hasn't spoken for 400 years.

  72. No angels, no miracles, no fresh revelation.

  73. But this day, the divine dialogue restarts,

  74. and the angel comes and speaks to him and says,

  75. your wife is going to have a baby.

  76. Elizabeth's been barren for years.

  77. Zechariah says,

  78. how do I know that's true?

  79. And the angel says,

  80. you'll be struck dumb until this boy is born.

  81. Zechariah finishes his stint in the temple.

  82. He goes home.

  83. Elizabeth becomes pregnant.

  84. He goes south to Judea in the hill country where they live.

  85. And Luke, then, chapter 1, verse 26,

  86. goes six months forward and 80 miles north

  87. to the despised Galilean town of Nazareth.

  88. And Gabriel comes to a girl.

  89. He's probably about 14 years old.

  90. And he speaks about another miracle pregnancy.

  91. This time, the pregnancy is not miraculous

  92. by overcoming age and barrenness,

  93. but quite the reverse.

  94. Overcoming youth and virginity.

  95. Mary, the highly favoured,

  96. the one who has received great grace from God,

  97. in being given this unique task,

  98. is told that her son is to be called Jesus

  99. because he will save his people from their sins.

  100. He will be son of the most high God.

  101. He will reign on David's throne

  102. over the descendants of David

  103. and his kingdom will last forever.

  104. Mary, unlike Zechariah, believes

  105. and submits to this outrageous plan

  106. and says,

  107. I am the Lord's servant.

  108. May your words be fulfilled.

  109. Then, in chapter 1, verse 39,

  110. we get these two women meeting.

  111. Mary travels 80 miles to see Elizabeth,

  112. her relative.

  113. Mary is in a privileged position.

  114. She's given this unique task,

  115. but she's also in a precarious situation

  116. because she could,

  117. her engagement could finish,

  118. her reputation could be soiled,

  119. she could be thrown out of the family house,

  120. she could even be killed,

  121. according to Old Testament law.

  122. It is not normal

  123. for 14-year-old girls

  124. to say they are incubating God,

  125. having immaculately conceived

  126. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  127. No one does that.

  128. It's not normal.

  129. That is enough to get you called

  130. a lunatic by onlookers,

  131. a harlot by your fiancé,

  132. and worthy of death

  133. by the religious establishment.

  134. However, in visiting Elizabeth,

  135. Mary gets all the encouragement

  136. that she needs

  137. to know this is God's plan.

  138. She gets three signs.

  139. She gets her personal sign.

  140. She sees Elizabeth put on a bit of weight.

  141. It's not because she was having

  142. an early Christmas,

  143. because Christmas isn't invented.

  144. It's because she's pregnant.

  145. She's six months pregnant.

  146. She gets her physical sign.

  147. She gets her physical sign

  148. as fetal John the Baptist

  149. leaps for joy

  150. when brought into proximity

  151. with the zygotic Jesus.

  152. That was my favourite line

  153. from the sermon.

  154. It's downhill from here.

  155. Mary also receives

  156. a prophetic sign

  157. because Elizabeth,

  158. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  159. confirms everything

  160. that she knows to be true.

  161. Blessed are you among women

  162. and blessed is the child

  163. you will bear.

  164. But why am I so favoured

  165. that the mother of my Lord

  166. should come to me?

  167. She's got great confidence.

  168. And now we're going to read the bit.

  169. Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  170. 46 to 55.

  171. And this is what it says.

  172. Let me show you the outline

  173. so you can be looking for it

  174. as we go through.

  175. We see Mary models

  176. kingdom worship.

  177. Mary testifies to

  178. kingdom dynamics.

  179. That's the two things

  180. I want you to look out for.

  181. And this is what

  182. I want us to take away.

  183. We can only sing

  184. Mary's song

  185. if we're trusting

  186. Mary's Saviour.

  187. We can only sing

  188. Mary's song

  189. if we're trusting

  190. Mary's Saviour.

  191. Karen's going to read this for us.

  192. Chapter 1

  193. verse 46.

  194. Mary said,

  195. My soul glorifies the Lord

  196. and my spirit rejoices

  197. in God my Saviour.

  198. For he has been mindful

  199. of the humble state

  200. of his servant.

  201. From now on

  202. all generations

  203. will call me blessed.

  204. For the Mighty One

  205. has done great things for me.

  206. Holy is his name.

  207. His mercy extends

  208. to those who fear him

  209. from generation to generation.

  210. He has performed

  211. mighty deeds

  212. with his arm.

  213. He has scattered

  214. those who are proud

  215. in their inmost thoughts.

  216. He has brought down

  217. rulers from their thrones

  218. but has lifted up

  219. the humble.

  220. He has filled the hungry

  221. with good things

  222. but has sent

  223. the rich away empty.

  224. He has remembered

  225. his servant Israel

  226. remembering to be merciful

  227. to Abraham

  228. and his descendants

  229. forever

  230. even as he said

  231. to our fathers.

  232. Mary stayed with Elizabeth

  233. for about three months

  234. and then returned home.

  235. Let's pray.

  236. Father God,

  237. speak to us.

  238. We pray.

  239. Speak to us

  240. in a way we can't dismiss.

  241. In a way we can't forget.

  242. Father,

  243. speak to us

  244. that we might

  245. once again

  246. see the glory

  247. of your gospel

  248. in the face

  249. of Jesus Christ.

  250. Amen.

  251. The first thing we see

  252. is that Mary

  253. models kingdom

  254. worship.

  255. It is possible,

  256. isn't it,

  257. to sing the right song

  258. in the wrong way.

  259. So I was at a youth camp.

  260. 14,

  261. 15 year old boys.

  262. I've got the joy,

  263. joy, joy, joy

  264. down in my heart.

  265. As they sing it,

  266. no joy.

  267. Sung in completely

  268. the wrong way

  269. or I don't know

  270. if you saw last week

  271. the England

  272. under 15 football team

  273. played a match

  274. in the victory shield.

  275. Wasn't many people

  276. there watching.

  277. They sung the national anthem.

  278. I have never heard

  279. the national anthem

  280. sung like that.

  281. Supposed to be

  282. this vitriolic call

  283. to rally for the country.

  284. They sung it

  285. like they were

  286. whistling a tune

  287. they didn't like

  288. on the bus.

  289. I was speaking

  290. in Dorchester

  291. at a church

  292. and I think

  293. the average age

  294. of the congregation

  295. was about 81.

  296. I took one of my friends

  297. who was leading worship

  298. and he thought

  299. we were saying

  300. did you feel

  301. the mountains tremble?

  302. And we got to the chorus

  303. which says

  304. oh I feel like dancing.

  305. I have never seen

  306. people look less like

  307. they were feeling

  308. like dancing

  309. in my life.

  310. Mary sings

  311. the perfect song

  312. in the perfect way.

  313. And the first thing

  314. why do I keep doing that?

  315. The first thing we see

  316. is that Mary's song

  317. is informed.

  318. See this from

  319. the first three verses.

  320. None of Mary's lyrics

  321. are original.

  322. She has borrowed

  323. the entire content

  324. of her song

  325. from the Old Testament.

  326. If we take

  327. just the first three verses

  328. she explicitly quotes

  329. seven verses

  330. from the Old Testament.

  331. She quotes

  332. from the law

  333. the prophets

  334. and the Psalms.

  335. Her entire song

  336. is modelled

  337. on the song

  338. that Hannah sings

  339. in 1 Samuel chapter 2.

    1 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  340. We know Mary was young

  341. we know Mary was poor

  342. but we must also conclude

  343. that Mary was saturated

  344. in scripture.

  345. That when this good news

  346. came to her

  347. a volcanic eruption

  348. of scripture

  349. erupted deep down

  350. in her soul

  351. and overflowed

  352. from her mouth.

  353. This is a real encouragement

  354. to internalise, memorise,

  355. meditate and hide

  356. scripture in our hearts.

  357. That we would like

  358. Mary's parents

  359. give our children

  360. scripture

  361. morning, noon and night

  362. three square meaty meals

  363. a day.

  364. Let us unleash

  365. the word of God

  366. to do the work of God

  367. in our lives

  368. and in the lives

  369. of the people

  370. that we're seeking

  371. to shepherd well.

  372. Let us be those

  373. like Mary

  374. from whom

  375. scripture oozes

  376. from every pore.

  377. Let us be those

  378. who respond to God

  379. who reveals himself

  380. explicitly in scripture

  381. to us.

  382. Have you ever thought

  383. for example

  384. that the Psalms

  385. are God giving us

  386. songs to sing back

  387. to him?

  388. Have you ever

  389. thought about that?

  390. God says

  391. here's a song book

  392. and I want you

  393. to use these songs

  394. to sing my praises.

  395. That's amazing.

  396. Mary's song

  397. is sung perfectly

  398. with the right attitude

  399. because it is informed.

  400. She knows the God

  401. she's talking about.

  402. Let us be praying

  403. the scriptures,

  404. singing the scriptures,

  405. pouring over the scriptures,

  406. sharing the scriptures,

  407. encouraging each other

  408. with the scriptures.

  409. Like Mary,

  410. let us not worship

  411. God glibly

  412. or ignorantly.

  413. Let's worship

  414. God informally.

  415. We can only sing

  416. Mary's song

  417. if we're trusting

  418. Mary's saviour.

  419. The second thing

  420. we see,

  421. Mary's song

  422. is internal.

  423. See the words

  424. that she uses

  425. in the first two lines.

  426. My soul

  427. glorifies the Lord

  428. and my spirit

  429. rejoices in God

  430. my saviour.

  431. Soul and spirit

  432. are deep

  433. internal things.

  434. You don't put

  435. a new pair of trousers

  436. on your soul

  437. because it's deep

  438. in the inside.

  439. True worship

  440. is deep

  441. crying out to deep

  442. as we imbibe

  443. the resonant hum

  444. of creation

  445. praising its creator.

  446. nature.

  447. And when we're

  448. talking about

  449. worship

  450. we're talking

  451. about a deep

  452. thing.

  453. We're talking

  454. about an internal

  455. thing.

  456. We're talking

  457. about something

  458. on the inside

  459. out

  460. than something

  461. that we take

  462. in from outside.

  463. We live

  464. in a wafer

  465. thin culture

  466. that is about

  467. appearance,

  468. strap lines

  469. and sound bites.

  470. Mary shows us

  471. that our worship

  472. is never to be

  473. superficial or

  474. skin deep.

  475. Mary models

  476. for us

  477. that true

  478. worship is

  479. in to out

  480. inside

  481. to outside

  482. the heart

  483. response

  484. being the

  485. source

  486. of everything.

  487. That means

  488. my praise

  489. and worship

  490. is never

  491. dependent on

  492. the music

  493. the lighting

  494. the amplification

  495. the ambience.

  496. It is

  497. dependent solely

  498. on the inclination

  499. of my heart

  500. towards the

  501. God of the

  502. universe.

  503. It is about

  504. the posture

  505. of my soul

  506. and my spirit.

  507. It is about

  508. what is going

  509. on deep

  510. down

  511. inside.

  512. Mary sings

  513. the perfect

  514. song

  515. in the

  516. perfect way

  517. and we

  518. this morning

  519. can only

  520. sing Mary's

  521. song

  522. if we're

  523. trusting

  524. Mary's

  525. saviour.

  526. thirdly

  527. we see

  528. Mary's

  529. song

  530. is

  531. intense.

  532. Look at

  533. that verse

  534. in verse

  535. 46

  536. my soul

  537. glorifies

  538. the Lord.

  539. Does anyone

  540. have my soul

  541. magnifies

  542. the Lord

  543. in their

  544. Bible?

  545. That is

  546. because

  547. it is

  548. literally

  549. the Latin

  550. word

  551. that we

  552. get the

  553. word

  554. magnification

  555. from.

  556. Mary is

  557. saying

  558. my soul

  559. magnifies

  560. the Lord

  561. it is an

  562. intense

  563. experience.

  564. it is

  565. from the

  566. word

  567. magnificat

  568. that we

  569. get the

  570. word

  571. magnification

  572. and I

  573. think this

  574. is a

  575. great

  576. description

  577. of what

  578. is going

  579. on here.

  580. We use

  581. the word

  582. magnification

  583. in two

  584. ways don't

  585. we?

  586. We

  587. magnify

  588. something in

  589. a microscope

  590. that is

  591. taking

  592. something

  593. very small

  594. and blowing

  595. it up so

  596. that we

  597. can see

  598. it.

  599. That is

  600. not what

  601. Mary is

  602. doing.

  603. We

  604. also use

  605. magnification

  606. for a

  607. telescope

  608. where we

  609. take something

  610. that is

  611. enormous and

  612. vast like

  613. the moon

  614. or the

  615. stars but

  616. it is far

  617. away so

  618. it looks

  619. really small.

  620. So we

  621. magnify it

  622. through a

  623. telescope so

  624. people can

  625. see it and

  626. go wow

  627. the moon is

  628. huge.

  629. Wow

  630. Saturn has

  631. got some

  632. massive

  633. rings.

  634. that is

  635. what Mary

  636. is doing.

  637. Mary is

  638. taking the

  639. person work

  640. majesty

  641. dominion and

  642. sovereignty of

  643. gods which

  644. is vast

  645. and magnifying

  646. it in her

  647. life so that

  648. people can see

  649. what God is

  650. like and how

  651. glorious he

  652. is.

  653. She is

  654. intensely

  655. mirroring the

  656. magnitude of

  657. God for

  658. others to

  659. see and

  660. learn from.

  661. That is

  662. what we're

  663. called to

  664. do Brunsfield

  665. not just on

  666. Sunday but

  667. as we go

  668. out into

  669. our lives

  670. we are

  671. called to

  672. magnify the

  673. Lord.

  674. Because lots

  675. of people in

  676. this city

  677. don't know

  678. God.

  679. They don't

  680. know the

  681. Lord Jesus.

  682. And he's

  683. far away.

  684. He doesn't

  685. mean anything

  686. to them.

  687. And so you

  688. are a

  689. telescope.

  690. And what

  691. you're doing

  692. is you're

  693. focusing in

  694. on the

  695. Lord and

  696. you're

  697. magnifying him

  698. in your

  699. soul.

  700. And people

  701. go wow.

  702. I didn't

  703. realize he

  704. was so

  705. big and

  706. so beautiful

  707. and so

  708. gracious and

  709. kind and

  710. loving and

  711. good.

  712. Mary's

  713. worship is

  714. intense.

  715. She sings

  716. the right

  717. song in

  718. the right

  719. way because

  720. she knows

  721. God.

  722. She's trusted

  723. God.

  724. We can only

  725. sing Mary's

  726. song if we've

  727. trusted Mary's

  728. saviour.

  729. And then

  730. lastly she

  731. models kingdom

  732. worship because

  733. her worship is

  734. indefinite.

  735. The first

  736. verb glorious

  737. in the

  738. original Greek

  739. is present

  740. continuous.

  741. It is

  742. something that's

  743. happened,

  744. happening and

  745. going to happen

  746. into the

  747. future.

  748. Her worship

  749. is not

  750. restricted to

  751. this song.

  752. She is a

  753. worshipper with

  754. all of her

  755. life.

  756. The second

  757. verb is

  758. rejoices or

  759. whatever you've

  760. got in your

  761. version.

  762. question.

  763. In the

  764. original Greek

  765. it is the

  766. aggressive

  767. aorist.

  768. Your question

  769. what is the

  770. aggressive aorist?

  771. I can see it

  772. on your lips.

  773. The

  774. aggressive aorist

  775. is something

  776. that begins

  777. now and

  778. continues

  779. forever.

  780. And Mary's

  781. worship is

  782. indefinite.

  783. It started,

  784. it's happening

  785. and it will go

  786. on forever.

  787. That's what

  788. she's singing.

  789. She sings

  790. the right

  791. way

  792. with the

  793. right attitude.

  794. Just a

  795. side note.

  796. Look at

  797. what she

  798. calls God

  799. in verse 47.

  800. And my

  801. spirit rejoices

  802. in God

  803. my saviour.

  804. The fact

  805. that Mary

  806. calls God

  807. her saviour

  808. completely

  809. flies in the

  810. face of

  811. any assumption

  812. that Mary

  813. is sinless,

  814. divine or

  815. a co-redemptrix

  816. with Christ.

  817. Mary here

  818. says I'm a

  819. sinner and

  820. I need a

  821. saviour.

  822. I'm sinful

  823. and I need

  824. a rescuer.

  825. She's in

  826. exactly the

  827. same position

  828. as us

  829. but she

  830. is a

  831. glorious

  832. model

  833. of what

  834. we're

  835. supposed to

  836. be.

  837. Mary

  838. models

  839. kingdom

  840. worship

  841. because her

  842. worship

  843. is informed,

  844. she knows the

  845. scriptures,

  846. internal,

  847. it's happening

  848. deep within,

  849. it's intense

  850. because she's

  851. magnifying God

  852. and it's

  853. indefinite

  854. because it

  855. will go

  856. on forever.

  857. We can

  858. only sing

  859. Mary's

  860. song

  861. if we're

  862. trusting

  863. Mary's

  864. saviour.

  865. And then

  866. let's look at

  867. the content

  868. of her song,

  869. Mary testifies

  870. to kingdom

  871. dynamics.

  872. Mary also

  873. gets the

  874. gospel,

  875. she understands

  876. the upside

  877. down nature

  878. of the

  879. kingdom

  880. that her

  881. unborn son

  882. will usher

  883. in.

  884. Mary testifies

  885. that God

  886. dwells,

  887. God dwells

  888. irreproachably

  889. but acts

  890. personally.

  891. Look at

  892. verses 49

  893. and 50.

  894. Look at

  895. how Mary

  896. describes God

  897. verse 49,

  898. the mighty

  899. one,

  900. the one

  901. whose name

  902. is holy.

  903. Mary testifies

  904. that God

  905. is perfect

  906. and omnipotent.

  907. omnipotent.

  908. He is

  909. glorious

  910. and irreproachable.

  911. He is

  912. bigger,

  913. superior,

  914. above,

  915. and infinitely

  916. more than

  917. anything we

  918. can understand.

  919. God who

  920. is utterly

  921. perfect and

  922. set apart

  923. from the

  924. world,

  925. that is

  926. what holy

  927. means.

  928. The

  929. unfathomable

  930. God who

  931. created the

  932. cosmos by

  933. listing a

  934. few nouns

  935. is a

  936. God who

  937. is and

  938. should

  939. remain

  940. inconceivably

  941. and

  942. unapproachable

  943. by sinful

  944. people.

  945. Mary says

  946. God,

  947. he is the

  948. mighty

  949. one.

  950. He is

  951. the holy

  952. one.

  953. But look

  954. at what

  955. he says.

  956. She says,

  957. for the

  958. mighty

  959. one has

  960. done great

  961. things for

  962. me.

  963. Look at

  964. verse 50.

  965. His mercy

  966. extends to

  967. those who

  968. fear him

  969. from generation

  970. to generation.

  971. Yes,

  972. he is big

  973. and glorious,

  974. holy and

  975. irreproachable,

  976. and yet he's

  977. personable.

  978. He does

  979. things for

  980. us.

  981. He shows

  982. mercy to

  983. me,

  984. and not

  985. just to

  986. me,

  987. but from

  988. generation to

  989. generation and

  990. all who

  991. will turn to

  992. him.

  993. Fear here

  994. is as

  995. reverent

  996. seriousness

  997. and heartfelt

  998. dependence.

  999. God dwells

  1000. irreproachably

  1001. as the

  1002. mighty one

  1003. whose name

  1004. is holy,

  1005. and yet

  1006. he acts

  1007. personally by

  1008. doing great

  1009. things on

  1010. our behalf

  1011. and extending

  1012. mercy to

  1013. us,

  1014. the unworthy.

  1015. Mary gets

  1016. the gospel.

  1017. Mary,

  1018. we can

  1019. sing,

  1020. we can

  1021. only sing,

  1022. I thought I

  1023. would have

  1024. known it by

  1025. now,

  1026. we can

  1027. only sing

  1028. Mary's

  1029. song if

  1030. we've

  1031. trusted,

  1032. if we're

  1033. trusting

  1034. Mary's

  1035. saviour.

  1036. We also

  1037. know that

  1038. she gets

  1039. the gospel

  1040. because she

  1041. says,

  1042. God exalts

  1043. the humble

  1044. but scatters

  1045. the proud.

  1046. Look at

  1047. 51 and

  1048. 52.

  1049. He has

  1050. performed

  1051. mighty deeds

  1052. with his

  1053. army,

  1054. he has

  1055. scattered

  1056. those who

  1057. are proud

  1058. in their

  1059. inmost

  1060. thoughts,

  1061. he has

  1062. brought down

  1063. rulers from

  1064. their thrones

  1065. but has

  1066. lifted up

  1067. the humble.

  1068. will.

  1069. This is

  1070. God's

  1071. glorious

  1072. plan,

  1073. this is

  1074. the way

  1075. that God

  1076. always

  1077. operates.

  1078. The

  1079. nauseating

  1080. pride of

  1081. rebellious

  1082. humanity

  1083. incurs

  1084. wrath and

  1085. judgment

  1086. from the

  1087. God who

  1088. is worthy

  1089. and yet

  1090. to those

  1091. who are

  1092. meek and

  1093. respond in

  1094. submissive

  1095. humility and

  1096. awe are

  1097. blessed and

  1098. exalted.

  1099. Wasn't that

  1100. the case?

  1101. You can tell

  1102. I did a

  1103. Bible overview

  1104. yesterday.

  1105. Wasn't that

  1106. the case on

  1107. the plains of

  1108. Shinar?

  1109. that humanity

  1110. said I want

  1111. to build a

  1112. tower to

  1113. be like

  1114. God that

  1115. reaches to

  1116. the heavens?

  1117. I don't

  1118. need God

  1119. anymore.

  1120. What does

  1121. God come

  1122. down and

  1123. do?

  1124. He scatters

  1125. them.

  1126. Because he

  1127. scatters the

  1128. proud.

  1129. Or what

  1130. about Moses

  1131. and the

  1132. Pharaoh?

  1133. Pharaoh in

  1134. God-like

  1135. fashion says

  1136. I'm going to

  1137. enslave this

  1138. people in

  1139. order that they

  1140. can facilitate

  1141. my own

  1142. hubris and

  1143. be brought

  1144. into

  1145. worshipping

  1146. me.

  1147. Moses the

  1148. shepherd from

  1149. Midian comes

  1150. and is the

  1151. instrument through

  1152. which God

  1153. humiliates the

  1154. Pharaoh by

  1155. utterly decimating

  1156. him and

  1157. showing that he

  1158. is mightier than

  1159. all the gods of

  1160. Egypt.

  1161. God scatters the

  1162. proud but he

  1163. exalts the

  1164. humble.

  1165. Or Saul the

  1166. king, no

  1167. heart, head and

  1168. shoulders above

  1169. everyone else.

  1170. I am the

  1171. big cheese.

  1172. His knees

  1173. knock at

  1174. facing Goliath

  1175. and he

  1176. ends up

  1177. committing

  1178. suicide.

  1179. And his

  1180. whole household

  1181. is destroyed.

  1182. God scatters

  1183. the humble.

  1184. And little

  1185. David who

  1186. wasn't even

  1187. invited to

  1188. Israel's Got

  1189. Talent as

  1190. Samuel comes to

  1191. anoint the

  1192. kings is

  1193. actually the

  1194. one God's

  1195. chosen to

  1196. be king.

  1197. God exalts

  1198. the humble

  1199. but scatters

  1200. the proud.

  1201. Do you

  1202. see the

  1203. gospel isn't

  1204. for good

  1205. people who

  1206. want to add a

  1207. little religion

  1208. to their lives,

  1209. who want a

  1210. little Jesus on

  1211. the dashboard of

  1212. their car.

  1213. God

  1214. the gospel is

  1215. for repentant

  1216. sinners who

  1217. know they

  1218. deserve nothing

  1219. and therefore

  1220. through faith in

  1221. Christ are

  1222. able to receive

  1223. everything.

  1224. It is the

  1225. ones who

  1226. realise they

  1227. are sick

  1228. who will go

  1229. to the

  1230. physician of

  1231. souls and

  1232. find healing

  1233. for their

  1234. lives.

  1235. People who

  1236. are proud

  1237. have no

  1238. room for

  1239. God.

  1240. People who

  1241. are humble

  1242. and desperate

  1243. say God I

  1244. need you.

  1245. Do you

  1246. see they

  1247. have pride

  1248. in their

  1249. inmost

  1250. thoughts?

  1251. That deep

  1252. down inside

  1253. it is them

  1254. that they're

  1255. worshipping.

  1256. And yet

  1257. Mary will

  1258. say my

  1259. soul magnifies

  1260. the Lord.

  1261. My spirit

  1262. rejoices in

  1263. God, my

  1264. saviour.

  1265. Mary gets

  1266. the gospel.

  1267. We can only

  1268. sing Mary's

  1269. song if we're

  1270. trusting Mary's

  1271. saviour.

  1272. Thirdly,

  1273. God fills

  1274. the hungry

  1275. and empties

  1276. the rich.

  1277. Mary is

  1278. not here

  1279. talking about

  1280. physical hunger

  1281. but spiritual

  1282. hunger.

  1283. In a few

  1284. chapters Luke

  1285. will relay

  1286. a sermon

  1287. that Jesus

  1288. gave on the

  1289. plane to

  1290. the watching

  1291. world and

  1292. he would say

  1293. blessed are

  1294. those who

  1295. hunger now

  1296. for they

  1297. will be

  1298. satisfied.

  1299. We read

  1300. about a man,

  1301. you're going to

  1302. read about him

  1303. just after

  1304. Christmas,

  1305. a man called

  1306. Simeon who

  1307. is old and

  1308. what it says

  1309. about him is

  1310. he was waiting

  1311. for the

  1312. consolation of

  1313. Israel.

  1314. That word

  1315. waiting is

  1316. literally the

  1317. word hungry.

  1318. He was

  1319. ravenous for

  1320. God to come

  1321. and do

  1322. something in

  1323. his world.

  1324. Those who

  1325. know they are

  1326. incomplete without

  1327. God find

  1328. themselves filled

  1329. by God whereas

  1330. those who are

  1331. full of everything

  1332. else remain

  1333. ravenously

  1334. restless.

  1335. That's all

  1336. over the

  1337. gospel.

  1338. Jesus makes

  1339. us aware of

  1340. our blindness

  1341. and then gives

  1342. us sight.

  1343. Jesus makes

  1344. us aware we

  1345. are wrong and

  1346. then he puts

  1347. us in the

  1348. right.

  1349. Jesus makes

  1350. us aware we

  1351. are lame and

  1352. then enables us

  1353. to walk.

  1354. God creates

  1355. in us a hunger

  1356. and then fills

  1357. us with his

  1358. goodness.

  1359. So I'm

  1360. working in my

  1361. office,

  1362. concentrating on

  1363. what I'm

  1364. doing and the

  1365. time goes by.

  1366. 1.30 comes,

  1367. Graham knocks on

  1368. the door.

  1369. Have you had

  1370. lunch?

  1371. Didn't even

  1372. think I was

  1373. hungry.

  1374. hungry.

  1375. The minute he

  1376. says have you

  1377. had lunch?

  1378. I am starving.

  1379. I don't think I'm

  1380. even going to be

  1381. able to make it

  1382. to Greg's for a

  1383. nutritious and

  1384. delicious lunch.

  1385. I didn't even

  1386. realize I was

  1387. hungry.

  1388. Then I go to

  1389. look for

  1390. sustenance.

  1391. We read the

  1392. Bible and all

  1393. of a sudden we

  1394. read a forgiveness

  1395. in Jesus Christ

  1396. and we've

  1397. never really

  1398. thought about

  1399. being guilty

  1400. but now it's

  1401. on our mind.

  1402. We read of the

  1403. peace that Jesus

  1404. brings and it is

  1405. then we see how

  1406. restless and chaotic

  1407. everything in our

  1408. life is.

  1409. We read the

  1410. Bible and we

  1411. read about life

  1412. in all its

  1413. fullness and it's

  1414. then that we

  1415. realize how

  1416. drab and

  1417. mediocre and

  1418. soulless our

  1419. existence is.

  1420. God fills the

  1421. hungry but

  1422. those who are

  1423. self-satisfied,

  1424. self-reliant and

  1425. seemingly self-sufficient

  1426. will get to the

  1427. end of their

  1428. lives and realize

  1429. that they are in

  1430. fact impoverished

  1431. without the Lord

  1432. Jesus.

  1433. We can only sing

  1434. Mary's song if

  1435. we're trusting

  1436. Mary's saviour.

  1437. And then

  1438. lastly before we

  1439. finish.

  1440. God keeps his

  1441. covenant but

  1442. extends his

  1443. parameters.

  1444. Look at these

  1445. last two verses.

  1446. He has helped

  1447. his servant Israel

  1448. remembering to be

  1449. merciful to

  1450. Abraham and his

  1451. descendants forever

  1452. just as he promised

  1453. our ancestors.

  1454. Mary now brings us

  1455. to the Old

  1456. Testament characters

  1457. of Israel and

  1458. Abraham.

  1459. The figureheads of

  1460. all that it means

  1461. to be God's chosen

  1462. people.

  1463. Abraham the pagan

  1464. moon worshipper

1465. who is met by God

  1466. and transformed into

  1467. the progenitor of

  1468. a great nation.

  1469. And Jacob the

  1470. twisted wrestler who

  1471. wrestles God and

1472. is given a new name

  1473. and great blessing.

  1474. The people on whom

  1475. God has set his

  1476. affection when he

  1477. related to them

  1478. through covenant and

  1479. promised blessing if

  1480. they obey and

  1481. cursing if they

  1482. disobey.

  1483. Yet we know the

  1484. story.

  1485. You especially know

  1486. the story if you

  1487. were here yesterday.

  1488. Think I could make

  1489. that clearer.

  1490. Despite prophets,

  1491. priests, kings,

  1492. miracles, battles,

  1493. signs, symbols,

  1494. oracles, parables and

  1495. patience, Israel

  1496. categorically failed to

  1497. keep the covenant and

  1498. fell short of its

  1499. requirements.

  1500. God's chosen people

  1501. had categorically come

  1502. under God's curse on

  1503. account of their

  1504. unfaithfulness.

  1505. Yet see these verses,

  1506. God remembers mercy.

  1507. And see how it

  1508. overflows out of

  1509. Abraham's descendants

  1510. forever.

  1511. Now, how much Mary

1512. knew of this, of what

  1513. she is singing about,

  1514. but inspired by the

  1515. Holy Spirit, she

  1516. alludes to the truth

  1517. that in Jesus, the

  1518. true and better

  1519. Israel, there is

  1520. absolute covenant

  1521. faithfulness leading

  1522. to the availability of

  1523. unqualified covenant

  1524. blessing.

  1525. Israel messed up and

  1526. they should have been

  1527. cursed.

1528. And yet Jesus came as

  1529. the new and better

  1530. Israel.

1531. He came and kept the

  1532. covenant.

1533. He came and did all

  1534. that God required.

  1535. He was the only

  1536. person who loved the

1537. Lord his God with all

  1538. his soul.

  1539. So, heart, soul, mind

1540. and strength for all of

  1541. his life.

1542. And yet he dies on a

1543. cross and he does that

1544. for us that we might get

  1545. all the blessing through

  1546. him that Old Testament

  1547. Israel was promised.

  1548. Christ.

1549. It is this Jesus that God's

1550. people are now found in.

  1551. It's not about covenant

  1552. blessing being ethnically

  1553. Jewish.

  1554. It's not about speaking

  1555. Hebrew.

1556. It's not about living in

  1557. Israel.

1558. It's about being found in

  1559. Jesus Christ and having

  1560. life and forgiveness, joy,

  1561. peace, eternal blessing

  1562. offered unconditionally

  1563. through faith in Jesus

  1564. Christ.

1565. We can only tune our

  1566. hearts to sing Mary's

  1567. song if we're trusting

  1568. Mary's saviour.

  1569. She gets kingdom worship.

  1570. She understands kingdom

  1571. dynamics and sings again

1572. and again about the gospel.

  1573. And so must we.

1574. We must be those who

  1575. worship God.

  1576. Informally.

  1577. Intensely.

  1578. Indefinitely.

  1579. Internally.

1580. We must sing of the gospel.

1581. Throughout all of our lives

1582. when the world squeezes in.

  1583. Sing the gospel louder

  1584. and prouder.

  1585. Not quieter

  1586. in the closet.

  1587. We can only sing

  1588. Mary's song

  1589. if we've trusted

  1590. Mary's saviour.

  1591. Let me pray.

  1592. Father God,

1593. we want to worship you

  1594. as humble worshippers.

1595. We want to worship you

  1596. in the way

  1597. modeled to us

  1598. by your servant Mary.

  1599. We want to sing

  1600. informed,

  1601. internal,

  1602. intense and

  1603. indefinite worship

  1604. back to you

  1605. because you have been

  1606. so good to us.

1607. We want to sing of your

1608. grace to us in the gospel.

  1609. The gospel that will

1610. turn this world upside down

1611. and has turned our lives

  1612. upside down.

  1613. Father God,

  1614. thank you for Jesus

  1615. our saviour.

1616. and we pray that we

  1617. might sing Mary's song

  1618. as those who have

  1619. trusted

  1620. and are trusting

  1621. and will

  1622. always

  1623. trust

  1624. Mary's saviour,

  1625. Jesus Christ

  1626. our Lord.

  1627. Amen.
