  1. It is wonderful to be here with you. I see some blurry eyes, which maybe means there was a football game on late into the evening last night, but it's great to be here together.

  2. Folks, if you have a Bible, please would you turn with me to the book of James and to chapter 3.

  3. And just before we begin our time this morning, let's pause just for a moment, just to pray and just commit this time together to God together.

  4. Let's pray.

  5. Father, we would think of the words of that song that we sang, draw me close to you, never let me go.

  6. I lay it all down again.

  7. Father, we pray, Lord, that you would come and bless our time together this morning.

  8. Father, as we turn to your words, Lord, I pray that my words would be your words.

  9. Father, I pray that your spirit would come and would teach us from this text.

  10. Would he illuminate, would he light up the Lord Jesus as we meet him in your word?

  11. So, Father, that's our prayer.

  12. And we make it through the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus.

  13. Amen.

  14. So, my wife, Alex, as many of you know, is training to be a GP.

  15. And I remember when she was studying for her practical exams, she announced that she needed a volunteer to help her as a patient doing practice interviews.

  16. Now, we were just married at this stage.

  17. And I was keen for her to see that she'd married an encouraging and supportive husband.

  18. So, I put up my hand and I volunteered to act as the patients in these interviews.

  19. And we were there for hours and hours and hours as we worked our way through this textbook.

  20. And I think I must have played almost every patient that I could have imagined.

  21. I mean, I played, I wrote it down, Mr. Black, the teacher who was prone to sleepwalking.

  22. And I played Mrs. Brown, the pensioner, who was struggling to read her daily newspaper.

  23. Now, why did we do that?

  24. Why did we spend hours and hours and hours doing that?

  25. Well, Alex, like any good doctor, she wanted to hone and develop the skills that she needed to get good at diagnosing.

  26. Friends, in our verses today, there's a diagnosis going on.

  27. This is James the doctor in full flow.

  28. And his patient is this church that he's writing to.

  29. Now, we've seen that over the last five weeks or so as we've studied this letter.

  30. Together.

  31. We've caught a glimpse of what the life of this church was like.

  32. And it isn't coming out too good.

  33. This is a church behaving badly.

  34. The letter's big theme, double-mindedness.

  35. That's been James' big push in this letter.

  36. What is he said?

  37. He said, stop being people who say one thing and go out and do another.

  38. Stop being people who show such blatant favoritism.

  39. Stop being people who pick and choose which ones of God's laws that you want to obey and those that you do not want to obey.

  40. And stop being people who are so blasphemy and who are so destructive with your words.

  41. But if anything, James has torn up until this point.

  42. It's been firm, but it has been gentle.

  43. I mean, look how he frames all of these things.

  44. Chapter 1, verse 2.

  45. My brothers.

  46. Chapter 2, verse 1.

  47. My brothers.

  48. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  49. My brothers.

  50. But folks, what we see in our verses that we are about to read is that James well and truly turns up the heat.

  51. I mean, he moves from the hug to the headlock.

  52. And chapter 4, verse 4, look at what he calls them.

  53. You adulterous people.

  54. You see, James here, he's got this scalpel in.

  55. The patient's skin peeled back.

  56. And he's going for the root problem.

  57. And as we look at this diagnosis, folks, what we will see is that this church isn't suffering from man flu.

  58. This church is suffering from an infectious gangrene that, if not treated and addressed, it's going to cause this church to rot away.

  59. So let's read our verses together.

  60. And as we read, I wonder if you can spot James's diagnosis.

  61. So this is James chapter 3, verses, sorry, James 3, 13 to 4, verse 12.

    James 3 chapter mention

  62. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  63. Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

  64. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

  65. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven, but it is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

  66. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

  67. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure.

  68. Then peace loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

  69. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

  70. What causes fights and quarrels among you?

  71. Don't they come from the desires that battle within you?

  72. You desire, but you do not have, so you kill.

  73. You covet, but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.

  74. You do not have because you do not ask God.

  75. When you ask, you do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

  76. You adulterous people.

  77. Don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God?

  78. Therefore, any who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

  79. Or do you think the scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?

  80. But he gives us more grace.

  81. This is why scripture says God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.

  82. Submit yourselves then to God.

  83. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

  84. Come near to God and he will come near to you.

  85. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

  86. Grieve, mourn and wail.

  87. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.

  88. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.

  89. Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.

  90. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it.

  91. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it but sitting in judgment on it.

  92. There is only one lawgiver and judge.

  93. The one who is able to save and destroy.

  94. But you, who are you to judge your neighbor?

  95. Amen.

  96. This is God's word to us this morning.

  97. So let's walk our way through this doctor-patient consultation process.

  98. What are the symptoms that this church are exhibiting?

  99. Well, we see from these verses, I think, three symptoms that this church are showing.

  100. Symptom number one at verse 16 of chapter 3.

  101. There is disorder and evil practice.

  102. Now, the immediate context of verses 13 to 17 is teaching.

  103. That's what James has been addressing in verses 1 to 12 of chapter 3.

  104. And he's been warning them as they clamber over each other, competing for the airtime that teaching is going to give them.

  105. He says, don't rush into being a teacher.

  106. Stop and examine your own heart before you share with everyone else your so-called wisdom and understanding.

  107. If you can't control your tongue, then who are you kidding, thinking that you can teach other people?

  108. And folks, the picture that we get is that in the background of this church, there's jealousy bubbling, rivalries developing, and there's restlessness building.

  109. Symptom number two at verse 1 of chapter 4.

  110. There is fighting and quarreling.

  111. And this seems to be the real issue in this church.

  112. There is a culture of bitterness, harshness.

  113. There is finger pointing and there is folding of arms, refusing to budge.

  114. And there is talking, talking, talking, and louder talking, leading to raised voices and raised fists.

  115. As people insist on their own way and as they refuse to listen and reason with each other.

  116. I mean, there is just a complete lack of love and harmony in this church.

  117. This is a church folks who are currently at each other's throats.

  118. Symptom number three.

  119. Slandering and judging.

  120. These people are gossiping.

  121. They are going out of their way to start rumors about people that they don't like.

  122. And they're speaking about people behind their backs.

  123. There is developing a real condemnatory church culture.

  124. Criticizing the speck in other people's eyes, all the while ignoring the log in their own.

  125. And they are judging one another.

  126. Which I think in the context means that they are deciding who is and who isn't a real Christian.

  127. And they are speculating at the eternal destinies of each other.

  128. Which James reminds them is a role that only God the log ever plays.

  129. The symptoms give you the picture here folks.

  130. This church reeks of pride and it reeks of selfishness.

  131. This church is divided.

  132. It is fractured.

  133. And it is tearing itself apart.

  134. And if it continues on the trajectory that it's on.

  135. It's going to spectacularly implode.

  136. Now how does James diagnose those symptoms?

  137. Well if you look at verse four of chapter four.

  138. You find that James the doctor is in absolutely no doubt.

  139. That underneath the surface.

  140. This church is suffering from worldly-itis.

  141. Now we're back to the central idea of this letter.

  142. Double-mindedness.

  143. That the people in this church are talking the Christian talk.

  144. They're doing the religious stuff.

  145. But their hearts are yearning after the things of the world.

  146. Not the things of God.

  147. They are meant to be God's distinct people.

  148. Living as a shining light in the midst of the world's darkness.

  149. But actually.

  150. When you lift the lid off their lives.

  151. They're just like everyone else around them.

  152. Same ambitions.

  153. Same motives.

  154. Same desires.

  155. It was interesting studying this passage this week.

  156. The word desire at verse two.

  157. The original Greek is the word hedonai.

  158. Which is where we get our English words hedonist.

  159. Pleasure seeking.

  160. But these people aren't seeking pleasure in God.

  161. The picture here is that the passions of the people in this church.

  162. Are for the things that the world has to offer them.

  163. And I think that's what James means at verse three.

  164. When he's talking about prayer.

  165. That you do not have.

  166. Because you do not ask.

  167. So their proud and stubborn hearts simply will refuse to pray.

  168. And then the things that you do ask for says James.

  169. You don't get.

  170. Now why do you not get?

  171. Because you ask with bad motives in your heart.

  172. Now I want you to think back to the time when you were a kid.

  173. And you wanted to do something.

  174. But to do it.

  175. It required the permission of your parents.

  176. And you'd had that conversation before with them.

  177. And it didn't go too well for you.

  178. But you thought that you'd give it another shot.

  179. Just in case they happened to have changed their mind.

  180. And you were suspiciously kind to them.

  181. You mowed the garden.

  182. You washed the dishes.

  183. Your room was extra tidy.

  184. Before picking your exact moment to ask your parents.

  185. And then still being met with a resounding no.

  186. That is what James is saying here to these people.

  187. You don't ask God.

  188. You don't pray to God about your heart's desires.

  189. And the things that you want.

  190. Because not only do you fear the answer that you'll get.

  191. But you know what he's already said.

  192. You know what he has expressly commanded.

  193. But so great is your selfishness.

  194. That you don't even bother to ask God.

  195. Or stop yourself from doing it.

  196. You just go ahead and do it anyway.

  197. You are the rebellious teenage boy.

  198. Who has snuck out his window to be at the nightclub with his friends.

  199. You know what God has said about loving your neighbor.

  200. You know what God has said about how you are to treat one another.

  201. You know what God has said to you about coveting.

  202. About jealously wanting the things that somebody else has.

  203. And yet you still go ahead and do it anyway.

  204. You are people driven by earthly wisdom says James.

  205. And that's why he uses that phrase at verse 4.

  206. Probably one of the strongest rebukes that we find anywhere in the New Testament.

  207. You adulterous people.

  208. You cheating people.

  209. You two-timing people.

  210. All the way through the Bible, that's how the relationship between God and his people is described.

  211. It's like a marriage.

  212. God is the faithful, loving husband.

  213. And he calls his people to be his faithful, loving wife.

  214. But history would tell us time and time and time again.

  215. That while God remains the unchanging, faithful, loving, sacrificial, gracious husband.

  216. Who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

  217. His people's hearts are continually flirting and desiring the things of the world.

  218. You know the word adulterer that James uses there in the original Greek, it's in the feminine form.

  219. And he quite deliberately does it like that.

  220. His Jewish audience, they would know their Old Testament.

  221. They would know their Old Testament prophets.

  222. And so the mention of a female adulterer bring to mind Old Testament Israel.

  223. And in particular, the prophet Hosea.

  224. God commands Hosea to marry a prostitute called Gomer.

  225. And Gomer's recurrent unfaithfulness so graphically and painfully illustrates

  226. how God sees his people's constant spiritual unfaithfulness to him.

  227. As they give him their words of love and of flattery.

  228. But then they run off to the pagan temples down the roads.

  229. And they worship the so-called other gods that everyone else is worshipping.

  230. As far as God is concerned, the message is quite clear.

  231. That idolatry is adultery.

  232. Israel's divided hearts and double minds.

  233. And that's what God had said to that generation of his people.

  234. And James says that the comparisons between the two,

  235. between that generation and this generation, they're uncanny.

  236. Your discreet love affair with the world.

  237. Dr. James doesn't need to run any further tests.

  238. He doesn't need a second opinion.

  239. For him, it is so evident by the disgusting way in which this church are behaving towards one another

  240. that the cause is worldly items.

  241. And folks, this is where we need to pause.

  242. We just need to park the bus just for a minute.

  243. And we need to sit in Dr. James' chair.

  244. Now, if he were to do a diagnosis of your life,

  245. if he were to get out his scalpel,

  246. if he was to peel back your skin,

  247. and he was to have a look inside,

  248. what would he see in your life?

  249. If he were to examine

  250. what your life is like

  251. inside these walls,

  252. and compare it with your life

  253. outside these walls,

  254. what would he see?

  255. If he was to look at your thought life,

  256. if he was to look at your personal life,

  257. and if he was to compare it

  258. to the life that everyone sees,

  259. would he see a consistent life?

  260. Would he see consistency,

  261. or would he see

  262. compromised men

  263. and women

  264. who are riddled

  265. with worldly items?

  266. Now, folks,

  267. as I've studied this passage this week,

  268. that is the challenge.

  269. Because,

  270. when we look at this church,

  271. and we see their symptoms,

  272. are we any different?

  273. I don't think we are that much

  274. far removed

  275. from what we see going on

  276. in this church.

  277. And can I make the observation

  278. at this stage

  279. that there is such a close link

  280. between our relationship

  281. with God

  282. and our relationships

  283. with other people?

  284. That's been such a central idea

  285. in this letter of James

  286. already,

  287. that there should be

  288. a holy consistency

  289. to the life

  290. of God's people.

  291. You flick back to chapter 3,

  292. you see James saying

  293. exactly that.

  294. That you can't be

  295. praising God with your lips

  296. one minute,

  297. and then as soon as

  298. you get outside,

  299. you go cursing

  300. the same brothers and sisters

  301. that you've just been with.

  302. That's just not on.

  303. Because their attitude

  304. towards people

  305. and our attitude

  306. towards people,

  307. it reveals an awful lot

  308. about what our attitude

  309. is to God.

  310. You know,

  311. if you find yourself

  312. exhibiting

  313. any of these symptoms,

  314. can I encourage you

  315. to do a self-diagnosis?

  316. If you find yourself

  317. bitter

  318. towards anybody

  319. in this church,

  320. if you find yourself

  321. agitated,

  322. if you find yourself

  323. impatient,

  324. if you find yourself

  325. bad-mouthing somebody

  326. in here

  327. or having a critical spirit,

  328. then God tells you

  329. right here

  330. in his word

  331. to stop.

  332. To examine

  333. your own heart

  334. and see that

  335. the problem

  336. is actually

  337. something within

  338. that you need

  339. to repent of

  340. and bring yourself

  341. to pray

  342. that God

  343. in his mercy

  344. would change you.

  345. Folks,

  346. I know that

  347. is so true

  348. in my own life.

  349. that the things

  350. that get me riled,

  351. the things

  352. that get me going,

  353. actually,

  354. when I stop

  355. to think about it

  356. and when I stop

  357. to examine

  358. my own heart,

  359. I realize

  360. so often,

  361. in fact,

  362. all the time,

  363. I realize

  364. that the problem

  365. is in here.

  366. You know,

  367. that seems to be

  368. the problem

  369. with this church,

  370. that they are

  371. nowhere with each

  372. other corporately

  373. because they are

  374. nowhere with God

  375. individually.

  376. these people

  377. always view

  378. the problem

  379. as being out there

  380. and never in here

  381. because worldly-itis

  382. has well and truly

  383. got under the skin

  384. of these people.

  385. It is rife

  386. in the life

  387. of this church

  388. and if it's not

  389. treated,

  390. it's going to

  391. kill this church.

  392. So what does

  393. James the doctor

  394. prescribe?

  395. For worldly-itis?

  396. What is going to be

  397. the thing

  398. that will transform

  399. the life of this

  400. church

  401. and it will

  402. transform

  403. the lives

  404. and relationships

  405. of the individuals

  406. in the church?

  407. Well,

  408. the prescription

  409. that James gives

  410. is found

  411. at verse 6

  412. of chapter 4.

  413. God's

  414. God's

  415. God's

  416. God's

  417. God's

  418. God's

  419. God's

  420. God's

  421. God's

  422. God's

  423. undeserved

  424. favor,

  425. God's

  426. blessing

  427. and kindness.

  428. It is available

  429. to them

  430. if,

  431. and there is a

  432. massive

  433. if here folks

  434. that we need to

  435. see,

  436. if they will humble themselves before God.

  437. If they will get down low on their knees

  438. and repent of their selfishness.

  439. Now, why is that the case?

  440. Well, it's spelled out in such black and white language

  441. at verse 6.

  442. Now, I know memory verses have gone out of fashion,

  443. but if you wanted a memory verse for this week,

  444. if you wanted a memory verse for all of your life,

  445. then can I suggest go for this one?

  446. One of the most sobering verses in the Bible, verse 6,

  447. that God opposes the proud,

  448. but gives grace to the humble.

  449. You see, what James calls for here

  450. in the life of this church is humility.

  451. Now, I think it's fair to say that humility

  452. isn't an attribute that is envied in our culture.

  453. And it certainly wasn't valued in the culture

  454. that this church are operating in.

  455. It's a word that was associated with lowliness,

  456. of weakness, and of grovelling.

  457. But James says, folks,

  458. that that is exactly the heart stance before God.

  459. That not only is the appropriate and right one,

  460. but it's the one that if you adopt,

  461. God promises that he will see

  462. and he will shower with his grace.

  463. And of course, this humility

  464. that James calls for,

  465. we see it most fully in the life of Jesus.

  466. That Jesus humbled himself

  467. by leaving the glories of heaven

  468. to come down to earth to save us.

  469. He humbled himself while he was here

  470. by washing his disciples' feet.

  471. And he humbled himself ultimately

  472. to death on a cross.

  473. Taking the punishment,

  474. dying the death that you and I deserve to die

  475. because of our sin against the holy God

  476. and accrediting us with his perfect life.

  477. The Bible uses the word righteousness.

  478. And because of his life of humility,

  479. because of his life of obedience,

  480. because of his life of faithfulness

  481. and single-mindedness,

  482. folks, we are the recipients of amazing grace.

  483. And not only has God saved us by his son,

  484. but when we gave our lives to God,

  485. the Bible would say that he adopted us

  486. as his children.

  487. And he put his spirit in us.

  488. His spirit in us,

  489. not to be a casual lodger,

  490. not to be a roommate that we wave to on the stairs,

  491. but right into our hearts

  492. to be a permanent dweller.

  493. That is the gospel.

  494. And brothers and sisters,

  495. can I encourage you

  496. that if we truly capture that

  497. with our hearts and our minds,

  498. then it leaves absolutely no room

  499. for us to be proud.

  500. It leaves no wiggle room

  501. for self-exaltation,

  502. but rather it should produce in us

  503. deep gratitude

  504. and deep humility.

  505. But James says here

  506. that God's grace,

  507. it wasn't exhausted

  508. at salvation,

  509. in salvation, sorry.

  510. James tells his readers

  511. that God's grace,

  512. it is a Niagara Falls

  513. for them to sit under

  514. and swim in.

  515. Because God desires

  516. to give them

  517. more grace.

  518. And God desires

  519. to give them

  520. more of himself.

  521. even though they look

  522. undesirable,

  523. and folks,

  524. let's be honest,

  525. even though we look

  526. so undesirable,

  527. God gives

  528. more grace.

  529. God wants

  530. his people

  531. for himself,

  532. warps and all.

  533. How good

  534. is God?

  535. God.

  536. I mean,

  537. this church

  538. is on the brink.

  539. But James

  540. tells them

  541. the wonderful truth

  542. that God's grace

  543. is their only hope.

  544. But what a hope

  545. it is.

  546. And folks,

  547. listen,

  548. I don't know whether

  549. you paid attention here

  550. or not,

  551. but if you haven't,

  552. can I say that you

  553. jump in here

  554. and remember

  555. this phrase.

  556. It is a wonderful

  557. hope,

  558. God's grace,

  559. because God's grace

  560. is greater,

  561. deeper,

  562. and wider

  563. than his people's

  564. failings,

  565. unfaithfulness,

  566. and weakness.

  567. God's grace

  568. is greater.

  569. Friends,

  570. can I urge you

  571. never to doubt

  572. that God is willing

  573. and desires

  574. to graciously

  575. provide the things

  576. that his children

  577. need.

  578. He doesn't withhold

  579. any good gift

  580. that his children

  581. need.

  582. Not that they want,

  583. but that they need.

  584. But we also need

  585. to see the warning

  586. here

  587. of how God

  588. views a proud

  589. and a stubborn

  590. human heart.

  591. God opposes

  592. the proud,

  593. but he gives grace

  594. to the humble.

  595. So what is the

  596. management

  597. of this prescription

  598. that Dr. James

  599. prescribes?

  600. So how is this

  601. humility that we've

  602. been looking at,

  603. how is it going to

  604. play out in their

  605. daily lives?

  606. And how is it going

  607. to play out in ours

  608. as well?

  609. Because James

  610. isn't saying,

  611. take the grace

  612. pill and kick

  613. back,

  614. go to the armchair,

  615. and everything's

  616. going to work out.

  617. They're going to

  618. have to work at

  619. this.

  620. And if you've got

  621. your Bibles there,

  622. just follow with me

  623. the imperatives

  624. that James lists

  625. at verses 7 to 10

  626. of chapter 4.

  627. This is what it's

  628. going to look like.

  629. Submit yourselves

  630. to God.

  631. So James is calling

  632. them to bow the

  633. knee,

  634. raise the white

  635. flag of surrender,

  636. stop rebelling,

  637. and stop resisting

  638. God in the way

  639. that you currently

  640. are.

  641. you know what

  642. he said.

  643. You know how he

  644. has commanded you

  645. to behave to one

  646. another.

  647. So do it.

  648. Resist the devil

  649. and he will flee

  650. from you.

  651. Now that word

  652. resist, it's a

  653. military metaphor.

  654. And James is

  655. telling them to

  656. say no to

  657. ungodliness.

  658. Say no to

  659. gossiping.

  660. Say no to the

  661. devil when he

  662. tries to get a

  663. hold of your

  664. tongue.

  665. and of your

  666. thoughts.

  667. But rather to

  668. resist him and

  669. stand firm.

  670. Draw near to

  671. God and he will

  672. draw near to you.

  673. Friends, what a

  674. wonderful promise

  675. that God makes

  676. here.

  677. That God is

  678. lovingly

  679. desperate

  680. that these

  681. running religious

  682. rebels,

  683. they turn to

  684. him and receive

  685. his grace.

  686. love for his

  687. returning son.

  688. Now this is the

  689. heart of the

  690. loving father.

  691. That while his

  692. son, the

  693. running rebel,

  694. who had openly

  695. rejected him to

  696. his face, as his

  697. son does a U-turn

  698. and makes his way

  699. back home, what

  700. does it say?

  701. The father sees

  702. him a long

  703. distance off and

  704. runs out to meet

  705. him.

  706. such as the

  707. father's great

  708. love for his

  709. returning son.

  710. Now hear the

  711. promise this

  712. morning, folks,

  713. that God makes to

  714. us in his

  715. words.

  716. A word for you

  717. this morning, if

  718. you currently have

  719. your back towards

  720. God, that if you

  721. draw near to him,

  722. he will draw near to

  723. you.

  724. wash your hands,

  725. your sinners, and

  726. purify your hearts,

  727. you double-minded.

  728. Grieve, mourn, and

  729. wail.

  730. Change your laughter

  731. to mourning and

  732. your joy to gloom.

  733. Now what James is

  734. saying here to

  735. these people is that

  736. you need to get

  737. right with God.

  738. You should be

  739. weeping, you

  740. should be crying

  741. over your sin-riddled

  742. hearts.

  743. And what it's

  744. doing to this

  745. church.

  746. You should mourn

  747. the state of

  748. affairs that are

  749. currently going on

  750. in your church.

  751. And as they do

  752. these things, folks,

  753. as they humble

  754. themselves,

  755. amazingly, God

  756. will lift them

  757. up.

  758. God will

  759. exalt them.

  760. And God

  761. will honor

  762. them.

  763. And why?

  764. Why?

  765. Because God's

  766. grace is

  767. greater,

  768. deeper,

  769. and wider

  770. than his

  771. people's

  772. failings,

  773. unfaithfulness,

  774. and weakness.

  775. so the patient

  776. has been

  777. diagnosed,

  778. and the

  779. prescription

  780. has been

  781. given.

  782. And as we

  783. draw our time

  784. to our

  785. close this

  786. morning,

  787. let's see

  788. what James

  789. says health

  790. is going to

  791. look like.

  792. How do we

  793. know this

  794. patient is

  795. being

  796. rehabilitated?

  797. So as God

  798. pours out his

  799. grace into

  800. their lives

  801. individually and

  802. corporately,

  803. what fruit

  804. should they

  805. see in

  806. their lives?

  807. Well, back

  808. in chapter

  809. one, we saw

  810. James encourage

  811. this church

  812. that if any

  813. of them lacks

  814. wisdom, to

  815. pray and to

  816. ask God who

  817. gives generously.

  818. Now, we so

  819. often read that

  820. and we read it

  821. as asking for

  822. divine wisdom,

  823. for guidance.

  824. So making

  825. life's big

  826. decisions.

  827. Now, of course,

  828. there is an

  829. application there,

  830. but I think

  831. James has much

  832. more in mind

  833. divine wisdom

  834. for conduct.

  835. So wisdom

  836. for how they

  837. are to behave

  838. rightly towards

  839. one another

  840. and how they

  841. are to live a

  842. life that is

  843. pleasing and

  844. honoring to

  845. God.

  846. So in

  847. contrast to the

  848. earthly wisdom,

  849. the disorder

  850. and the evil

  851. practice that

  852. currently

  853. characterizes

  854. this church,

  855. here at

  856. verses 17

  857. and 18,

  858. James describes

  859. for us what

  860. divine wisdom

  861. is going to

  862. look like in

  863. their lives.

  864. Humble,

  865. self-sacrificing,

  866. peaceful,

  867. merciful,

  868. reasonable,

  869. and gentle.

  870. Wonderful

  871. characteristics that

  872. James encourages

  873. them to adorn

  874. and wear.

  875. And we'll

  876. finish, folks,

  877. by reading these

  878. verses together.

  879. And I encourage

  880. you, just like I

  881. was challenged

  882. this week in my

  883. own life,

  884. do you see

  885. divine wisdom

  886. on show in

  887. your life?

  888. And if you

  889. don't,

  890. can I ask you

  891. to seriously

  892. pray to God

  893. who gives

  894. generously

  895. and who

  896. gives

  897. graciously?

  898. Let's read

  899. these verses

  900. together as we

  901. close.

  902. But the

  903. wisdom that

  904. comes from

  905. heaven is

  906. first of all

  907. pure,

  908. then peace

  909. loving,

  910. considerate,

  911. submissive,

  912. full of mercy

  913. and good fruit,

  914. impartial and

  915. sincere.

  916. Peacemakers

  917. who sow in

  918. peace reap a

  919. harvest of

  920. righteousness.

  921. Let's pray

  922. together, folks,

  923. as we close.

  924. these are the

  925. ones I look

  926. on with

  927. favor,

  928. those who

  929. are humble

  930. and contrite

  931. in spirit

  932. and who

  933. tremble

  934. at my

  935. words.

  936. Father, we

  937. come before

  938. you, Lord,

  939. as people

  940. knowing that

  941. we have

  942. unclean

  943. hearts.

  944. Father, that

  945. our thoughts

  946. are full of

  947. unclean

  948. things, that

  949. our hearts

  950. are wicked

  951. and deceitful.

  952. But Father,

  953. thank you this

  954. morning that

  955. you've reminded

  956. us in your

  957. words that

  958. you give

  959. more grace.

  960. And so,

  961. Father, it's

  962. that grace

  963. that we

  964. throw ourselves

  965. on.

  966. Father, we

  967. ask for that

  968. spirit of

  969. humility.

  970. We ask for

  971. that wisdom

  972. from above as

  973. we seek to

  974. witness for

  975. you, as

  976. we seek to

  977. live for

  978. you in

  979. this world

  980. this week,

  981. we pray.

  982. Amen.

  983. Amen.

  984. Amen.

  985. Amen.

  986. Amen.

  987. Amen.

  988. Amen.

  989. Amen.

  990. Amen.

  991. Amen.

  992. Amen.

  993. Amen.

  994. Amen.

  995. Amen.

  996. Amen.
