  1. and in Peru. So it can be doctors, nurses, medics can go and work on our medical ships,

  2. or if you're just not medically gifted or you're not a medical professional, you can go to Tanzania

  3. and Peru to work with our construction teams building homes for orphans and children who

  4. have lost their parents through HIV and AIDS, and also we're working with children in Peru

  5. who are street children or vulnerable children. So that's the sort of the work that Vine Trust

  6. has been involved in for the last 30 years.

  7. Fantastic, and at least a couple from our church have been out to Peru, and indeed one came back with a very special friendship from it.

  8. Kenny, what do you do? What is your role within the Vine Trust?

  9. Yeah, well, my job title is Programmes Manager, which is very vague, and that's just to cover a multitude of different activities.

  10. Predominantly, my role is to be the link between the projects we have in Peru and Tanzania and the Vine Trust,

  11. so I'm the person that's chasing them up for reports, getting on their backs for different things,

  12. but also it's to what we call capacity building. Sounds very fancy, doesn't it? It's all about helping and equipping our partners in Peru and Tanzania

  13. to develop their skills and abilities to help the projects develop.

  14. Fantastic, thanks very much. And just anything particularly we can pray for for Vine Trust yourself at the moment?

  15. Yeah, please pray for the new health project we have in Tanzania.

  16. We had a medical ship taken away from Greenock all the way to Lake Victoria, and we're now in the final stages of getting that up and running,

  17. hopefully in the month of March, and we're working with the African Indian Church to be using that to reach out to the island communities,

  18. so that's one thing to pray for. And also please pray for the work that's going on in Peru.

  19. We're looking to develop the health work we've got there going there too, to reach more and more communities,

  20. and we're working with Scripture Union there, so just please pray for those two parts in particular.

  21. Fantastic. Let me just pray for both the work of Vine Trust and Kenny to come to speak to us now.

  22. Our Father, we thank you that here in Edinburgh we can partner with those around the world.

  23. We thank you with those who are actively involved and serve you in that way.

  24. We thank you for Kenny's work with Vine Trust, and we do pray for him as he coordinates things,

  25. as he holds things together, if you really give them wisdom and help in that.

  26. We pray for the work in Tanzania. We thank you for this exciting new project.

  27. We pray for the work that will enable them to reach many more in the motor parks, in the islands and so on,

  28. and they'll be a real blessing for you.

  29. We pray for the ongoing work in Peru as well, and as they will seek to reach further

  30. and to tell people that the Lord Jesus will provide for their medical needs.

  31. We pray that you will grant safety, that you will grant good care with the people,

  32. and that your world will really spread out and have wonderful effect,

  33. even as people's bodies too are healed.

  34. We thank you for your presence with us this morning, and we quickly commit Kenny to you now

  35. as he brings us your words, that what you have shown to him, he will be able to present to us clearly,

  36. and that you will speak through him, and that we will be listeners and hearers and doers of the words.

  37. We commit ourselves to you in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Thank you.

  40. Well, good morning.

  41. It is a real privilege to share from God's word with you this morning,

  42. but before we turn to God's word, I just want to say on behalf of the family,

  43. thank you to Brunsfield for the way you've welcomed them.

  44. We felt very welcome as soon as we walked through the door.

  45. We had about five or six people welcoming us in the first five or six minutes,

  46. and I said, the clouds are amazing.

  47. We felt so welcome since we walked in the door,

  48. and over the last, well, it was an Easter Sunday last year that we came for the first time.

  49. So it's just about a year, but we felt so welcomed here,

  50. and we just want to thank you for the way you've accepted us into the church family.

  51. We thank you for your patience with us as well.

  52. It's been quite a process for us as we've settled into life here in Scotland.

  53. When we arrived back on the plane in July 2013,

  54. we thought we were going back to Bolivia in January 2014,

  55. but God had different plans for us completely,

  56. and by November of that year, I had a new job with the Vine Trust,

  57. and I had to go back to Bolivia myself and sell the house

  58. and move all the things around and come back with three suitcases of things.

  59. And God really has blessed us as we've settled back in,

  60. but it's been a challenge.

  61. So we thank you for your patience with us, for your prayers, for your concern,

  62. for your encouragement. It's really a real blessing to us as a family.

  63. As I say, it's been a real challenge, but also a real blessing during this time

  64. to have settled back into life in Scotland.

  65. I left Scotland at the age of 23,

  66. and I was out to Bolivia 15 years.

  67. So you can work out how roughly how old I am.

  68. I'm not as old as I look, going by the hair.

  69. But it's amazing having spent all that amount of time outside of Scotland

  70. how little really I knew of my own country.

  71. And it's been a real pleasure to me to find out more about Scotland

  72. and do it with my family as well.

  73. One of the things we love to do as a family is go out and explore.

  74. And I must admit that part of that motivation is to find new things,

  75. but also I have three children.

  76. And if any of you have seen or know our three children,

  77. or at least I've heard our three children,

  78. they have boundless energy.

  79. And often on Saturday it's the plan.

  80. The question I ask each other is,

  81. where are we going today?

  82. Where can we go so the kids can burn up so energy

  83. and they'll sleep this evening?

  84. And so we often go to the beach.

  85. And North Berwick Beach,

  86. that's a picture of North Berwick Beach,

  87. is one of our favourite places.

  88. We also love Yellow Craigs Beach.

  89. I don't know if anyone's ever been to these places.

  90. Great places not too far from here.

  91. And the places we go and we've got to know really well

  92. just by enjoying the scenery

  93. and just walking along the beach.

  94. But what we've found as a family

  95. is often we'd go walking for long distances

  96. and get to know the area in a very general sort of way.

  97. But sometimes the visits we enjoyed most

  98. is we would go to a certain part of the beach

  99. and just stop and start looking down.

  100. And often you'll see the whole family on the beach

  101. when we were down and hunched down,

  102. looking and picking up tiny little shells.

  103. And we have a collection of different shells and stones

  104. that we've collected from all over different parts of Scotland.

  105. Really enjoying seeing some of the smaller details

  106. in this beautiful large landscape.

  107. And that image came to my mind

  108. as I turned to this passage we're looking at today

  109. in Exodus chapter 11 and 12.

    Exodus 11 chapter mention

  110. It's a passage which for many people here today

  111. it'll be very familiar.

  112. You'll have heard many times.

  113. Maybe as you came up through Sunday school

  114. you'll have heard this story over and over again.

  115. And the problem with that is when we know something

  116. we think we know something so well

  117. and become so familiar with it

  118. sometimes we can lose the small details.

  119. And my prayer has been that as we

  120. turn to these chapters today

  121. as we turn to this story today

  122. that maybe there's something

  123. we just jump out of the page

  124. from God's word to you today.

  125. It happened to me a few weeks ago

  126. when we were in Exodus chapter 5.

    Exodus 5 chapter mention

  127. And we read these words.

  128. It said, this is Pharaoh speaking.

  129. He said,

  130. Who is the Lord that I should obey him?

  131. I've read that chapter I don't know how many times.

  132. But that question he asked Pharaoh,

  133. Who is the Lord that I should obey him?

  134. And that link between knowing and obeying

  135. nearly come to my mind.

  136. And what also jumped to me from the page

  137. was that Moses didn't answer.

  138. He let God answer that question.

  139. And my prayer this morning is that

  140. as we turn to God's word

  141. and we would have that question

  142. maybe in our minds,

  143. Who is the Lord?

  144. Who is he to me?

  145. Because I think this chapter 11 and chapter 12

  146. really speak to us in a powerful way

  147. about who this true God is.

  148. And there wouldn't be that you would hear me speaking

  149. this morning.

  150. In the same way that Moses just

  151. ignored the question altogether

  152. and let God answer it.

  153. I hope this morning as we look,

  154. turn to God's word

  155. that God will really speak to your hearts

  156. as we go through his words.

  157. Last week John was going through

  158. the last nine of the ten plagues.

  159. And we now come to the final plague,

  160. probably the most gruesome of all.

  161. And chapter 11 and chapter 12,

  162. chapter 12 in particular,

  163. it's like a list of instructions

  164. when you read through it for the first time.

  165. Now, we men have a bad reputation

  166. when it comes to instructions.

  167. And if my wife asked me

  168. about me reading instructions,

  169. not often the first thing that I do

  170. when we buy something,

  171. not even in the Ikea flat pack furniture,

  172. have a go first of all,

  173. and it doesn't work,

  174. then you turn to the instructions.

  175. Before it used to be asking directions in the car.

  176. Men on the doors were not asking directions too.

  177. Now we have GPS.

  178. So we no longer don't listen to the people

  179. in the neighborhood where to go to.

  180. We now don't listen to the GPS

  181. where it's telling us where to go to.

  182. And we argue with the GPS.

  183. Well, I do anyway.

  184. Have a running battle.

  185. Turn right?

  186. No, I'm turning left.

  187. Turn right?

  188. No, I'm turning left.

  189. And that is the way it goes.

  190. But this chapter here,

  191. 11 and 12,

  192. 12 in particular,

  193. is a list of instructions

  194. that we really need to turn to

  195. and listen to.

  196. And I'd like God to apply those truths

  197. to our hearts.

  198. These are sort of multi-layered,

  199. multi-purposed instructions

  200. that we have here

  201. in this part of God's words.

  202. In chapter 11,

  203. we read in verse 1,

  204. it says there'll be,

  205. God tells Moses there'll be

  206. one more plague.

  207. One more plague.

  208. So God is making it very clear

  209. here to Moses

  210. and to all the Israelites,

  211. this is the end of the plagues.

  212. And then in verse 2,

  213. we read something

  214. which is maybe unusual

  215. in the context

  216. when we're reading through this.

  217. It says here,

  218. verse 2 of chapter 11,

  219. tell the people

  220. that men and women alike

  221. are to ask their neighbours

  222. for articles of silver and gold.

  223. It seems like a very strange instruction

  224. right in the middle

  225. of all these plagues here.

  226. Tell the people

  227. that men and women alike

  228. are to ask their neighbours

  229. for articles of silver and gold.

  230. And here we have this unusual,

  231. what seems to be a usual instruction by God,

  232. but actually God is linking this back,

  233. what's about to happen,

  234. to something that happened

  235. many, many years ago.

  236. In Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  237. in verse 14,

  238. we read this,

  239. when God's speaking to Abraham,

  240. the father of the Israel nation,

  241. he says,

  242. I will punish the nation

  243. they serve as slaves

  244. and afterwards

  245. they will come out

  246. with great possessions.

  247. I will punish the nation

  248. they serve as slaves

  249. and afterwards

  250. they will come out

  251. with great possessions.

  252. So here we have God

  253. instructing them

  254. to ask for possessions.

  255. And by giving this instruction

  256. very clearly here,

  257. he's linking this back

  258. to a promise

  259. and a statement

  260. he made to Abraham

  261. many, many years ago.

  262. So what is about to happen

  263. is not something

  264. sort of random thing,

  265. it's not something

  266. which is just happening,

  267. it is part of a divine plan.

  268. This is God's plan

  269. for the Israelites,

  270. something that was planned

  271. many, many years beforehand.

  272. So when Pharaoh is asking,

  273. who is the Lord?

  274. We find that here,

  275. he is about to declare to Egypt

  276. and leave them

  277. without any doubt at all,

  278. they are dealing

  279. with the eternal,

  280. all-powerful God

  281. who is in control

  282. of everything

  283. from the past

  284. and the present

  285. and into the future.

  286. And in this demonstration

  287. of his power

  288. and this declaration

  289. of who he is

  290. will go even further

  291. than Egypt at that time.

  292. Later on,

  293. when you read about

  294. the Israelites

  295. going to the promised land

  296. and when the spies

  297. meet with Rahab

  298. in Jericho,

  299. we read this

  300. in Joshua chapter 2,

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  301. he says,

  302. she says this,

  303. we have heard

  304. how the Lord

  305. dried up the water

  306. of the Red Sea

  307. for you

  308. when you came out

  309. of Egypt.

  310. When we heard of it,

  311. our hearts melted

  312. and everyone's courage

  313. failed because of you.

  314. For the Lord,

  315. your God,

  316. is God in heaven above

  317. and on earth below.

  318. Who is the Lord?

  319. He is the all-powerful God

  320. in control of everything,

  321. past, present

  322. and future.

  323. So this last plague,

  324. a horrific plague,

  325. we're going to read

  326. from verses 4 to 8

  327. in chapter 11.

  328. It says,

  329. so Moses,

  330. verse 4,

  331. this is what the Lord says,

  332. about midnight

  333. I will go throughout Egypt.

  334. Every firstborn son

  335. in Egypt will die

  336. from the firstborn son

  337. of Pharaoh

  338. who sits on the throne

  339. to the firstborn son

  340. of the male slave

  341. who is at her mill hand

  342. and all the firstborn

  343. of the cattle as well.

  344. There will be a loud

  345. wailing throughout Egypt

  346. worse than there ever

  347. has been or will ever be again.

  348. Among the Israelites

  349. not a dog will bark

  350. at any person or animal.

  351. Then you will know

  352. that the Lord

  353. who makes a distinction

  354. between Egypt

  355. and Israel.

  356. All these officials of yours

  357. will come to me

  358. bowing down before me

  359. and saying,

  360. go,

  361. you and all the people

  362. who follow you,

  363. after that I will leave.

  364. Then Moses,

  365. hot with anger,

  366. left Pharaoh.

  367. It's a horrific plague.

  368. As I say,

  369. we often read these words

  370. and we've heard them

  371. so often before

  372. that we may become numb

  373. to this last plague.

  374. It is the death

  375. of the firstborn

  376. of these families.

  377. A truly tragic

  378. and horrific plague.

  379. I wonder if you can

  380. just,

  381. in your minds,

  382. just try and imagine

  383. something similar

  384. happening today.

  385. The firstborn

  386. of every family

  387. and even in the cattle

  388. dying

  389. just overnight.

  390. But we see

  391. in what is to follow

  392. in chapter 12

  393. and it's highlighted here

  394. that it says

  395. that God will make

  396. a distinction

  397. between Egypt

  398. and Israel

  399. but God had instructions.

  400. He had plans

  401. and some guidance

  402. for them

  403. so they could avoid

  404. being struck down

  405. by this horrible plague.

  406. And reading through

  407. chapter 12,

  408. I think there are

  409. three things

  410. that we can see

  411. from these instructions.

  412. First of all,

  413. these are practical instructions.

  414. Practical instructions

  415. to save them

  416. from the final plague.

  417. what the Israelites

  418. had to do

  419. at that time.

  420. Then they have

  421. a remembrance element.

  422. In God's instructions

  423. he says

  424. that they are

  425. to have a festival

  426. into the future

  427. to remind them

  428. of what God

  429. has done for them.

  430. And also these instructions

  431. are symbolic.

  432. And what I want to focus

  433. more time on

  434. this morning

  435. is just how

  436. what we see here

  437. in these instructions

  438. that God gives to them

  439. that there is

  440. an outline

  441. or a glimpse

  442. of God's

  443. great salvation plan.

  444. Not just for the Israelites,

  445. not just for one nation,

  446. but for all humanity.

  447. In chapter 12

  448. in verse 1 and 2

  449. it says this,

  450. The Lord said to Moses

  451. in Egypt,

  452. This month is to be

  453. for you

  454. the first month

  455. the first month

  456. of your year.

  457. So here we have God

  458. outlining

  459. a new calendar.

  460. Changing the whole

  461. structure of their lives

  462. even from when

  463. their calendar

  464. the year starts.

  465. This is a momentous occasion

  466. that God is saying

  467. this is a new stage

  468. in your lives

  469. a new phase

  470. in your walk

  471. with me.

  472. So much so that

  473. I'm going to change

  474. the whole calendar

  475. and you're going to

  476. start every year

  477. remembering

  478. what I have done

  479. in your lives.

  480. These are practical

  481. instructions.

  482. Verses 3 to 11

  483. in chapter 12

  484. says,

  485. Tell the whole community

  486. of Israel

  487. that on the tenth

  488. year of this month

  489. each man is to

  490. take a lamb

  491. for his family

  492. one for each household.

  493. If any household

  494. is too small

  495. for a whole lamb

  496. they must share one

  497. with their nearest neighbor

  498. having taken into account

  499. the number of people

  500. there are.

  501. You are to determine

  502. the amount of lamb

  503. in accordance

  504. with what each person

  505. will eat.

  506. The animals you choose

  507. must be year old

  508. males without defect

  509. and you may take them

  510. from the sheep

  511. or the goats.

  512. Take care of them

  513. until the fourteenth day

  514. of the month

  515. when all the members

  516. of the community

  517. of Israel

  518. must slaughter them

  519. at twilight.

  520. Then you are to

  521. take some of the blood

  522. and put it on the sides

  523. and tops of the door frames

  524. of the houses

  525. where they eat the lambs.

  526. That same night

  527. they are to eat the meat

  528. roasted over fire

  529. along with bitter herbs

  530. and bread made

  531. without yeast.

  532. Do not eat the meat

  533. raw or boiled in water

  534. but roasted over a fire

  535. with the head, legs

  536. and internal organs.

  537. Do not leave

  538. any of it

  539. until morning.

  540. If some is left

  541. until morning

  542. you must burn it.

  543. This is how you are

  544. to eat it

  545. with your cloak

  546. tucked into your belt

  547. your sandals on your feet

  548. your staff in your hands.

  549. Eat it in haste.

  550. It is the Lord's Passover.

  551. There is always a bit

  552. of a worry

  553. when you are sharing

  554. from God's Word

  555. when it is talking

  556. about food

  557. and roasting food.

  558. It is so close

  559. to lunchtime.

  560. I hope the stomachs

  561. are not rumbling too much

  562. and hopefully not

  563. be too much longer

  564. so you can get away

  565. and have that lunch

  566. but especially having

  567. roast lamb

  568. for dinner today.

  569. But these are

  570. very, very specific

  571. instructions God

  572. is giving to them.

  573. On the tenth day

  574. I take a lamb

  575. one for each household.

  576. It is to be a year old lawn

  577. without any defect at all.

  578. On the fourteenth day

  579. they are to sacrifice

  580. that one at twilight.

  581. They are to paint blood

  582. on the door frames

  583. and then they are to roast

  584. not boil

  585. but roast the lamb

  586. eat it with bitter herbs

  587. eat bread without yeast

  588. and then eat

  589. or burn

  590. all the leftovers

  591. and be dressed

  592. ready to go

  593. and eat quickly.

  594. Very, very specific

  595. instructions that God

  596. has put in place

  597. for them.

  598. But if they are complete

  599. and do what God

  600. has said

  601. and if they obey

  602. then verse 13

  603. says this

  604. The blood will be

  605. a sign for you

  606. on the houses

  607. where you are

  608. and when I see the blood

  609. this is God speaking

  610. I will pass over you.

  611. No destructive plague

  612. will touch you

  613. when I strike Egypt.

  614. What God is saying is

  615. here are some

  616. specific instructions

  617. if you obey

  618. then when I see the blood

  619. I will pass over you

  620. and my destructive hand

  621. will not touch

  622. your family.

  623. Practical instructions.

  624. But these also have

  625. instructions for remembrance

  626. into the future.

  627. In verse 14

  628. it says

  629. this is a day

  630. you are to commemorate

  631. for the generations

  632. to come

  633. you shall celebrate it

  634. as a festival

  635. to the Lord

  636. a lasting ordinance.

  637. And in verse 25

  638. it says this

  639. when you enter the land

  640. God is looking

  641. into the future

  642. when you enter the land

  643. the Lord will give you

  644. as he promised

  645. observe this ceremony

  646. and when your children

  647. ask you

  648. what does this ceremony

  649. mean to you

  650. then tell them

  651. it is the Passover

  652. sacrifice to the Lord

  653. who passed over the houses

  654. of the Israelites

  655. and spared our homes

  656. when he struck down

  657. the Egyptians.

  658. So it's a new calendar

  659. some specific instructions

  660. to save themselves

  661. from the destruction

  662. of the final plague

  663. but also a reminder

  664. a festival

  665. which God starts

  666. to help them

  667. to reflect

  668. on what he has done

  669. and help them

  670. to worship too.

  671. and it's to be passed down

  672. from generation

  673. to generation.

  674. When we're driving

  675. in the car

  676. going anywhere

  677. doesn't matter

  678. where we're going

  679. we can go to Tesco

  680. in the shops

  681. or Sainsbury's

  682. wherever

  683. it's always daddy

  684. and then there's a question

  685. daddy why is this

  686. and daddy's why that

  687. and I'm going

  688. you've got your mum

  689. sitting here too

  690. she can answer

  691. some questions too.

  692. Kids are generally

  693. inquisitive

  694. well mine are anyway

  695. always asking why

  696. why is this

  697. why is that

  698. and God is saying

  699. when you're

  700. when you're celebrating

  701. this festival

  702. in the future

  703. and your children

  704. will ask you

  705. because that's what children do

  706. why

  707. then you can tell them

  708. what God did for you

  709. in the past

  710. because in years to come

  711. that generation

  712. was no longer

  713. good to be there

  714. and as humans

  715. we have this tendency

  716. to forget

  717. we're great at forgetting

  718. what's happened

  719. in the past

  720. and what God wants to do

  721. is make sure

  722. that the next generation

  723. the next generation

  724. the generations to come

  725. will know

  726. who God is

  727. and what he has done

  728. for them

  729. but this Passover

  730. isn't just practical

  731. it's just for remembrance

  732. but it's also symbolic

  733. and I want to pick out

  734. just very quickly

  735. some

  736. some

  737. symbols here

  738. in this

  739. passage

  740. which speak to us

  741. about God's

  742. great wonderful

  743. salvation plan

  744. not just as a

  745. for one nation

  746. not just for one night

  747. but for

  748. for all humanity

  749. forever

  750. it describes

  751. at the beginning

  752. of Genesis

  753. when we started

  754. this study

  755. a number of weeks ago

  756. right at the beginning

  757. we find out

  758. these Israelites

  759. this family

  760. who'd been invited

  761. to Egypt

  762. invited as guests

  763. were no longer guests

  764. they were now living

  765. as slaves

  766. and it says in verse

  767. 23 of chapter 2

  768. that they cried

  769. for help

  770. they cried for help

  771. why?

  772. because

  773. they were completely

  774. powerless

  775. to overthrow

  776. the Egyptian rulers

  777. their overlords

  778. they had no power

  779. to get rid of them

  780. at all

  781. and this is an example

  782. of where we are

  783. the Bible clearly

  784. illustrates and tells us

  785. that we are also slaves

  786. in Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  787. it talks about

  788. we are slaves

  789. to sin

  790. that sin

  791. controls our lives

  792. our thoughts

  793. our actions

  794. our motives

  795. our desires

  796. we are controlled

  797. by it

  798. and our destiny

  799. is shaped

  800. by the sin

  801. and we are

  802. completely powerless

  803. under our own strength

  804. to do anything

  805. at all

  806. about this

  807. when I was

  808. growing up

  809. as a kid

  810. there was only

  811. one television program

  812. worth watching

  813. as far as I was concerned

  814. it was the 18

  815. now my daughter

  816. Ella's daughter

  817. Emma saw this picture

  818. and she says

  819. who are they?

  820. I was shocked

  821. I thought

  822. what have I been doing

  823. what education

  824. have I been giving

  825. to my children

  826. they have no idea

  827. who the 18 is

  828. whatsoever

  829. I wanted to be

  830. that gentleman

  831. there on the right hand side

  832. B.A. Barakas

  833. he was my favourite

  834. I wanted to be like

  835. B.A. Barakas

  836. I have kind of like

  837. the reverse Mohican

  838. going on now

  839. instead of the

  840. but he was my hero

  841. he was a big tough guy

  842. and even

  843. I'm sure you must have

  844. most of you seen

  845. the A team

  846. at some time

  847. they were always

  848. these guys are running away

  849. from the police

  850. and from the army

  851. and they'd be

  852. always holed up

  853. somewhere in a warehouse

  854. and it looked like

  855. everything was lost

  856. and all of a sudden

  857. because there was guys

  858. these guys were geniuses

  859. they could get

  860. this old bit of metal

  861. from here

  862. and this old bit of metal

  863. from there

  864. and they would put together

  865. a tank

  866. from absolutely nothing

  867. it's ridiculous

  868. I actually turned around

  869. it's true

  870. I actually watched an episode

  871. a couple of years ago

  872. I thought

  873. why on earth

  874. did I watch this again

  875. it was completely ridiculous

  876. but they

  877. through their own

  878. just sort of

  879. genius

  880. were able to save themselves

  881. from a helpless situation

  882. and sometimes

  883. of course

  884. we don't run

  885. in warehouses

  886. making tanks

  887. to escape from

  888. helpless situations

  889. in our own life

  890. but we think

  891. that sometimes

  892. when problems

  893. arrive in our lives

  894. that through our own

  895. maybe cleverness

  896. through our own skills

  897. and our money

  898. and ability

  899. and influence

  900. we try to influence

  901. situations

  902. to escape from the problems

  903. that appear in our lives

  904. but this passage

  905. this book of Exodus

  906. and the whole Passover

  907. and what happens here

  908. clearly illustrates this to us

  909. in a symbolic way

  910. that there is one problem

  911. we can do absolutely nothing about

  912. under our own power

  913. and that is sin

  914. it doesn't matter

  915. how smart

  916. how clever

  917. how wealthy

  918. or powerful you are

  919. there is nothing you can do

  920. to escape from

  921. the problem

  922. of sin

  923. and this Passover

  924. teaches in a symbolic way

  925. that freedom

  926. from the slavery

  927. of sin

  928. is God's initiative

  929. it is God's plan

  930. it is through God's power

  931. and it is through

  932. God's grace

  933. see God didn't save

  934. the Israelites

  935. from the slavery

  936. in Egypt

  937. because they were worth it

  938. because I'm worth it

  939. like the advert says

  940. on television

  941. it wasn't because

  942. they had done something

  943. that justified

  944. or made God

  945. want to do it for them

  946. it was because

  947. God's grace

  948. he wanted to

  949. save them

  950. from slavery

  951. in Egypt

  952. and then we have

  953. the image

  954. of the lamb

  955. this was to be

  956. sacrificed

  957. in place

  958. or in substitute

  959. for the firstborn

  960. it was to be a lamb

  961. without defect

  962. and here we have

  963. such a beautiful picture

  964. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  965. do we not

  966. he who was without sin

  967. he who gave his life

  968. as a sacrifice

  969. as a substitute

  970. for us

  971. John the Baptist

  972. when he saw Jesus coming

  973. he said

  974. look

  975. the lamb

  976. of God

  977. who takes away

  978. the sin

  979. of the world

  980. one of my favourite

  981. bible commentators

  982. is a man called

  983. Warren Wearsby

  984. he's tremendous

  985. way of opening up

  986. God's word

  987. in simple ways

  988. for people who are

  989. simple like me

  990. can understand

  991. and he turns

  992. to these verses

  993. of verse 3

  994. to verse 5

  995. of Genesis

  996. of Exodus

  997. and he says here

  998. he points out

  999. three things

  1000. in verse 3

  1001. it says

  1002. each man

  1003. is to take

  1004. a lamb

1005. and then in verse 4

  1006. he says

  1007. according to what

  1008. each can eat

  1009. you shall make

  1010. your count

  1011. for the lamb

1012. and then in verse 5

  1013. he says

  1014. your lamb

  1015. shall be

  1016. without blemish

  1017. and he points out

  1018. the progression

  1019. here that is

  1020. from a lamb

  1021. to the lamb

  1022. to your lamb

  1023. to general

  1024. to specific

  1025. to personal

  1026. and he points out

  1027. that this

  1028. this image

  1029. of the lamb

  1030. becoming something

  1031. very general

  1032. to specific

  1033. and then to personal

  1034. is also the plan

  1035. that God has

  1036. for our lives

  1037. towards the lamb

  1038. of God

  1039. Jesus Christ

  1040. he should be

  1041. no longer just

  1042. a lamb

  1043. he would then move

  1044. to the lamb

  1045. of God

  1046. and then our lamb

  1047. or my lamb

  1048. of God

  1049. this wonderful

  1050. progression here

  1051. because God

  1052. wants Jesus Christ

  1053. to become personal

1054. to each one of us

  1055. we're talking about

  1056. the study in John

    John 17 chapter mention

  1057. chapter 17

  1058. this week

  1059. from the young people

  1060. of the day away

  1061. John 17 verse 3

    John 17:3

  1062. gives us a wonderful

  1063. definition of what

  1064. eternal life is

  1065. it says

  1066. now this is

  1067. eternal life

  1068. definition

  1069. that you may know

  1070. the one true God

  1071. and Jesus Christ

  1072. whom he has sent

  1073. the eternal life

1074. which God has to offer

  1075. each one of us

  1076. is a personal

  1077. relationship

  1078. with God

  1079. from a lamb

  1080. to the lamb

  1081. to my lamb

  1082. and then there's

  1083. the blood

  1084. which we've been

  1085. singing about

1086. in many of the songs

  1087. this morning

  1088. that people

  1089. would understand

  1090. clearly that blood

  1091. was a symbol

  1092. of life

  1093. in the book

  1094. of Deuteronomy

  1095. we read

  1096. the blood

  1097. is the life

  1098. the blood

  1099. is the life

  1100. I wonder

  1101. what the Egyptians

  1102. were thinking

  1103. as they saw

  1104. these Israelites

  1105. slaughtering a lamb

  1106. at twilight

1107. and all of a sudden

  1108. starting to paint

  1109. their doors

  1110. with lamb's blood

  1111. it must have been

  1112. a shocking

  1113. a worrying

  1114. image to see

  1115. but this painting

  1116. of blood

  1117. onto their door frames

  1118. was an act

  1119. of faith

  1120. how on earth

  1121. can just by painting

1122. blood onto a door frame

  1123. save you from

  1124. your firstborn

  1125. dying

  1126. but the thing is

  1127. you have to understand

  1128. that this simple

  1129. blood of a lamb

  1130. the power was in

  1131. what God understood

  1132. that lamb to represent

  1133. that that blood

  1134. being painted

  1135. there was an act

  1136. of faith

  1137. an act of obedience

  1138. an act of trust

  1139. and that that blood

  1140. of that lamb

1141. was to be in place

  1142. or that sacrifice

1143. that lamb was in place

  1144. of the firstborn

  1145. in that household

  1146. and that blood

  1147. there was nothing else

  1148. they can do

1149. there was no other way

  1150. there was no other

  1151. instruction

  1152. just the blood

  1153. of the lamb

  1154. on the doorpost

  1155. that's what they were

  1156. to do

  1157. and because God

  1158. says when I see

  1159. the blood

  1160. I will pass

  1161. over

  1162. this is a wonderful

  1163. symbolic expression

  1164. of what Jesus Christ

  1165. has done for us

  1166. his blood

  1167. that covers us

  1168. and our sin

  1169. so that God

  1170. passes over us

  1171. he sees his

  1172. son's blood

  1173. that was shared

  1174. on the cross

  1175. for us

  1176. and we no longer

  1177. receive the punishment

  1178. that we deserve

  1179. in Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:7

  1180. verse 7

  1181. it says

  1182. in him

  1183. in Jesus Christ

  1184. we have

  1185. redemption

  1186. through his

  1187. blood

  1188. the forgiveness

  1189. of our sins

  1190. according to the

  1191. riches

  1192. of his grace

  1193. again

  1194. because of his

  1195. grace

  1196. in the same way

  1197. that Israelites

  1198. did not deserve

  1199. to be forgiven

  1200. and to be pardoned

  1201. from this final plague

  1202. we do not deserve

  1203. to be pardoned either

  1204. but it's from God's grace

  1205. that he

  1206. forgives us

  1207. so Jesus Christ

  1208. is our

  1209. Passover

  1210. lamb

  1211. this Passover

  1212. passage is not just

  1213. about a new calendar

  1214. it's not just about

  1215. salvation from the

  1216. tenth plague

  1217. it's not just the

  1218. introduction of a

  1219. new festival

  1220. that they are to

  1221. celebrate

  1222. but points us to

  1223. very clearly

  1224. the

  1225. Passover

  1226. lamb

  1227. Jesus Christ

  1228. his life

  1229. his death

  1230. his sacrifice

  1231. once and for all

  1232. his

  1233. victory

  1234. you see

  1235. that is the only

  1236. way

  1237. to salvation

  1238. is to do

  1239. to come before God

  1240. and trust in him

  1241. and receive what

  1242. Jesus Christ

  1243. done for us

  1244. in faith

  1245. and when

  1246. they did this

  1247. it says

  1248. here

  1249. it is the

  1250. Passover

  1251. sacrifice

  1252. to the Lord

  1253. who passed

  1254. over the

  1255. houses of

  1256. Israelites

  1257. in Egypt

  1258. and spared

  1259. our homes

  1260. when he

  1261. struck down

  1262. the Egyptians

  1263. when Moses

  1264. explains these

  1265. things to the

  1266. people

  1267. what was the

  1268. response

  1269. when they

  1270. heard this

  1271. message

  1272. it says

  1273. then the

  1274. people bowed

  1275. down

  1276. and worshipped

  1277. bowed down

  1278. and worshipped

  1279. it was the

  1280. only true

  1281. response

  1282. and understanding

  1283. fully

  1284. that as they

  1285. were grasping

  1286. what God

  1287. was about

  1288. to do

  1289. for them

  1290. their

  1291. response

  1292. was

  1293. worship

  1294. and that

  1295. should be

  1296. our

  1297. response

  1298. this

  1299. morning

  1300. that as we

  1301. understand

  1302. and appreciate

  1303. what God

  1304. has done

  1305. for us

  1306. to Jesus

  1307. Christ

  1308. it's to turn

  1309. round

  1310. and worship

  1311. him

  1312. I want to

  1313. leave you

  1314. with a quote

  1315. from a hymn

  1316. that was written

  1317. almost 100 years

  1318. ago

  1319. in 1917

  1320. it says this

  1321. the chorus

  1322. of the hymn

  1323. and I pray

  1324. that these

  1325. will be the

  1326. words of our

  1327. hearts

  1328. and our

  1329. worship to

  1330. God

  1331. this morning

  1332. O

  1333. Jesus

  1334. Lord

  1335. and Saviour

  1336. I give

  1337. myself

  1338. to you

  1339. for you

  1340. in your

  1341. atonement

  1342. did give

  1343. yourself

  1344. for me

  1345. I owe

  1346. no other

  1347. master

  1348. my heart

  1349. shall be

  1350. your throne

  1351. my life

  1352. I give

  1353. henceforth

  1354. to live

  1355. O Christ

  1356. for you

  1357. alone

  1358. may God

  1359. bless the

  1360. reading of

  1361. his words

  1362. this morning

  1363. thank you

  1364. I love you

  1365. God

  1366. will

  1367. let's

  1368. bless you
