  1. Please take a seat.

  2. This evening is the second in our series.

  3. I'm not a Christian because we had a cracking start last week.

  4. Great time of fellowship together and looking at why all religions aren't the same.

  5. Tonight we've got I'm not a Christian because you can't trust the Bible.

  6. An absolutely world class speaker called Bob Aykroyd, the principal of Edinburgh Theological Seminary,

  7. what used to be the Free Church College, is coming to speak.

  8. So whatever it takes, whatever the cost, whatever needs to be sold or given up,

  9. make sure you get yourself there because it will be well worth it.

  10. And the coffee's not bad either.

  11. Let's pray and then we'll get to work.

  12. Father God, thank you so much for this morning.

  13. Thank you for all the truths that we've sung.

  14. Thank you that we've been able to seek your face in prayer.

  15. Father, thank you that that's all possible because of Jesus.

  16. And so, Lord, we pray now as we come to study this written word.

  17. Father, would you show us ever more clearly your son, your living word.

  18. Father, bless us and help us in his glorious name.

  19. Amen.

  20. We love escape stories.

  21. We love stories about escape.

  22. We love this idea of incarceration to freedom.

  23. Although I dare say that goldfish is going to find it's not actually greener on the other side.

  24. We love bondage to redemption.

  25. We love prison bars exchanged for open spaces.

  26. Escape stories really resonate with us.

  27. We like them.

  28. We have films like Papillon with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman trying to escape from prison.

  29. We have stories like 12 Years a Slave, that box office hit of last year.

  30. We have Amazing Grace, William Wilberforce and William Pitt trying to end the slave trade.

  31. That classic, the wooden horse where the inmates take up gymnastics in order that they can tunnel out of the prison.

  32. We have that world famous Shawshank Redemption.

  33. We have Les Mis as Jean Valjean tries to escape the clutches of Inspector Javert.

  34. Escape stories seem to resonate with us.

  35. We like the idea of escaping.

  36. We have TV series like Prison Break and Breakout Kings.

  37. Harry Houdini captured imaginations with his escapology.

  38. Children play games like Stuck in the Mud, where people are stuck and then they're freed.

  39. We have fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty.

  40. Even Aladdin's classic is about Princess Jasmine trying to escape the life of luxury she has in the palace,

  41. whilst at the same time Aladdin trying to escape the clutches of poverty that he has.

  42. The theme of escape resonates with us, but there's no more famous escape story than the aptly named The Great Escape.

  43. If we were feeling more joyous we could perhaps sing the theme tune, but I'll save it.

  44. But the film is based on the true story of 76 prisoners of war

  45. who set about escaping from the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Lower Silesia in modern day Poland by tunneling.

  46. They built three tunnels.

  47. One of them was viable.

  48. They left.

  49. 76 got out.

  50. But what we learn in the story is getting out is only half the story.

  51. Getting out is only half the story.

  52. There is a massive difference between getting out and getting to safety.

  53. Of the 76 who escaped, 50 were shot dead.

  54. 23 were recaptured and severely punished.

  55. Only three made it to safety.

  56. There is a massive difference between getting out and getting to safety.

  57. Good old Alcatraz.

  58. For its 29 years as a state penitentiary in America in San Francisco Bay,

  59. 36 prisoners tried to escape.

  60. Six were shot dead.

  61. Seven drowned.

  62. 23 recaptured.

  63. There is a massive difference between getting out and getting to safety.

  64. And as we turn to Exodus 14, this is what hangs in the balance.

  65. The Israelites have gotten out.

  66. In chapter 12, verse 31, Pharaoh lets the people go.

  67. But they're not safe.

  68. They're not safe yet.

  69. It's impossible to exaggerate just how key the crossing of the Red Sea is to the rest of the Bible.

  70. There are 24 explicit references to it in the rest of the Old Testament.

  71. Countless in the New Testament.

  72. Most famous, Luke chapter 9, verse 31.

    Luke 9:31

  73. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

  74. The word for departure is the word Exodus.

  75. So as Moses and Elijah chat to Jesus on top of the mountain,

  76. they very much see it as a second better Exodus.

  77. Hebrews 11, by faith, the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land.

  78. But when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.

  79. Probably most famous and awkwardly, 1 Corinthians 10.

  80. For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters,

  81. that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.

  82. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

  83. And a little bit later down it says,

  84. Now these things happened to them as an example,

  85. but they were written down for our instruction.

  86. This crossing of the Red Sea isn't just a historical fact.

  87. It's important for us.

  88. What we're looking at this morning is about the Hebrews not just getting out,

  89. but getting to safety.

  90. But it's written for us.

  91. It helps us get out of our bondage and get us to our safety, which is the Lord Jesus.

  92. So if you've got a Bible, it will be massively helpful.

  93. If you could turn to Exodus chapter 14.

    Exodus 14 chapter mention

  94. And I want to start reading at verse 5.

  95. Exodus chapter 14 and verse 5.

    Exodus 14 chapter mention

  96. When the king of Egypt was told that the people have fled,

  97. Pharaoh and his officials changed their mind about them and said,

  98. What have we done?

  99. We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services.

  100. So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him.

  101. He took 600 of the best chariots,

  102. along with all the other chariots of Egypt,

  103. with officers over all of them.

  104. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt,

  105. so that he pursued the Israelites who were marching out boldly.

  106. The Egyptians, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots,

  107. horsemen and troops,

  108. pursued the Israelites and overtook them

  109. as they camped by the sea near Pi-ha-hiroth,

  110. opposite Baal-zaphon.

  111. As Pharaoh approached the Israelites,

  112. looked up,

  113. and there were the Egyptians marching after them.

  114. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord.

  115. They said to Moses,

  116. Was it because there were no graves in Egypt

  117. that you brought us to the desert to die?

  118. What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

  119. Didn't we say to you in Egypt,

  120. Leave us alone.

  121. Let us serve the Egyptians.

  122. It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians

  123. than to die in the desert.

  124. Moses answered the people,

  125. Do not be afraid.

  126. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance

  127. the Lord will bring you today.

  128. The Egyptians you see today will never,

  129. you will never see again.

  130. The Lord will fight for you.

  131. You need only be still.

  132. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  133. Why are you crying out to me?

  134. Tell the Israelites to move on.

  135. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea

  136. to divide the waters

  137. so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.

  138. I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians

  139. so that they will go in after them.

  140. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh

  141. and haul his army through the chariots and his horsemen.

  142. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord

  143. when I gain glory through Pharaoh,

  144. his chariots and his horsemen.

  145. Then the angel of God,

  146. who had been traveling in front of Israel's army,

  147. withdrew and went behind them.

  148. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front

  149. and stood behind them,

  150. coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel.

  151. Throughout the night,

  152. the cloud brought darkness to the one side

  153. and light to the other,

  154. so neither went near the other all night.

  155. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea

  156. and all that night,

  157. the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind

  158. and turned it into dry land.

  159. The waters were divided

  160. and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground

  161. with a wall of water on their right

  162. and on their left.

  163. The Egyptians pursued them

  164. and all Pharaoh's horses and chariots

  165. and horsemen followed them into the sea.

  166. During the last watch of the night,

  167. the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire

  168. and cloud at the Egyptian army

  169. and threw it into confusion.

  170. He jammed the wheels of their chariots

  171. so that they had difficulty driving.

  172. And the Egyptians said,

  173. let's get away from the Israelites.

  174. The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.

  175. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  176. stretch out your hand over the sea

  177. so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians

  178. and their chariots and horsemen.

  179. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea

  180. and at daybreak,

  181. the sea went back to its place.

  182. The Egyptians were fleeing towards it

  183. and the Lord swept them into the sea.

  184. The water flowed back

  185. and covered the chariots and horsemen.

  186. The entire army of Pharaoh

  187. that had followed the Israelites into the sea,

  188. not one of them survived.

  189. But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground

  190. with a wall of water on their right

  191. and a wall of water on their left.

  192. That day, the Lord saved Israel

  193. from the hand of the Egyptians

  194. and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.

  195. And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord

  196. displayed against the Egyptians,

  197. the people feared the Lord

  198. and put their trust in him

  199. and in Moses, his servant.

  200. They'd taken a kind of roundabout route

  201. to get to Pi-Hahiroth.

  202. You saw that last week

  203. that they didn't take the most obvious route

  204. so that they would perhaps evade

  205. the Egyptians should they come after them.

  206. But back in Egypt,

  207. the Pharaoh is freaking out.

  208. You can just imagine

  209. he's woken up in the morning

  210. and he had to get his own slippers

  211. because there were no slaves in the house.

  212. He had to spread his own marmalade

  213. on his sourdough toast.

  214. He had to retrieve the paper himself

  215. and open his own post

  216. and he thinks,

  217. what have we done?

  218. I love verse 5.

  219. It's so English.

  220. We have let the Israelites go

  221. and have lost their services.

  222. He really means that we don't have any slaves anymore.

  223. So what does he do?

  224. He throws the kitchen sink

  225. in this retrieval protocol.

  226. This idea of 600 best chariots

  227. is the phrase for his imperial guards.

  228. He calls the boys and says,

  229. right, we're going after them.

  230. His best chariots,

  231. his very own soldiers.

  232. And just for good measure,

  233. he sends everybody else as well.

  234. It's like Barack Obama

  235. sending the Navy SEALs

  236. and the rest of the US Army.

  237. And they overtook them

  238. and they blocked them in.

  239. This is what it looks like.

  240. The Hebrews have been moving left to right.

  241. The Egyptians have overtaken them.

  242. They're penned in by the sea

  243. and if they go back,

  244. it's towards Egypt.

  245. They are trapped.

  246. It's like,

  247. it's going to be like

  248. shooting fish in a barrel.

  249. What we have on our hands

  250. is a potential massacre.

  251. The Egyptians are a fierce,

  252. fighting superpower.

  253. And the Israelites

  254. perhaps have a pitchfork

  255. between all of them.

  256. And I want us to see three things

  257. this morning.

  258. Here's the first.

  259. Salvation is freedom from bondage.

  260. Salvation is freedom from bondage.

  261. If you just flick back

  262. to chapter 13,

  263. verse 18,

  264. it says,

  265. the Israelites went out of Egypt

  266. ready for battle.

  267. You can imagine them.

  268. They've got camo paint,

  269. back slaps.

  270. They're like,

  271. we're going for this.

  272. And they give a good grunt,

  273. like,

  274. ha!

  275. Look at chapter 14,

  276. verse 8.

  277. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh,

  278. the king of Egypt,

  279. so that he pursued the Israelites

  280. who were marching out boldly.

  281. You can just imagine

  282. they're singing like one of those

  283. army songs,

  284. like,

  285. do,

  286. do,

  287. do,

  288. do,

  289. do,

  290. do,

  291. do.

  292. Do you know,

  293. as they march along,

  294. they look up for it.

  295. But look at chapter 14,

  296. verse 10.

  297. The Israelites looked up,

  298. and there were the Egyptians

  299. marching after them.

  300. They were terrified

  301. and cried out to the Lord,

  302. utterly melted.

  303. It was all for show

  304. that when they saw

  305. their old slave masters

  306. in the distance,

  307. terrified.

  308. And they start to moan.

  309. It seems like God's people

  310. have that kind of

  311. genetically embedded in them.

  312. Why didn't you leave us

  313. in Egypt,

  314. Moses?

  315. Were there not enough

  316. graves for us?

  317. We really loved

  318. being slaves

  319. to the Egyptians.

  320. Why have you brought us

  321. out here to die?

  322. They've got terrible

  323. recollection.

  324. Like,

  325. horrendous recollection.

  326. Back in chapter 4,

  327. this is what really happened.

  328. Then Moses and Aaron

  329. gathered together

  330. all the elders

  331. of the people of Israel.

  332. Aaron spoke all the words

  333. of the Lord

  334. that were spoken to Moses

  335. and did the signs

  336. in the sight of the people.

  337. And the people believed.

  338. And when they heard

  339. that the Lord had visited

  340. the people of Israel

  341. and that he had seen

  342. their reflection,

  343. they bowed their heads

  344. and worshipped him.

  345. Didn't read in that bit

  346. much like,

  347. actually,

  348. we're quite happy here.

  349. I quite like making

  350. yasmin tea

  351. for the Pharaoh.

  352. Do you see,

  353. geographically,

  354. they're free.

  355. But spiritually,

  356. when their old slave masters

  357. are in the distance,

  358. they're back in bondage.

  359. Let's go back.

  360. Let's go back

  361. to once we,

  362. once were.

  363. It's like this guy,

  364. Brooke Hanlon

  365. from Shawshank Redemption.

  366. He's been in prison

  367. for 50 years

  368. and finally,

  369. he gets a parole hearing

  370. and is set free

  371. from Shawshank Prison.

  372. But though he's free

  373. geographically,

  374. inside,

  375. he's still a prisoner

  376. and he ends up

  377. committing suicide

  378. because he cannot cope.

  379. Just like the Israelites.

  380. They got out

  381. but they didn't get

  382. to safety.

  383. Getting Israel

  384. out of Egypt

  385. is easy

  386. compared to getting

  387. Egypt

  388. out of the Israelites.

  389. You know the struggle

  390. in your own life.

  391. You know what it is

  392. to be free in Jesus

  393. and yet still

  394. to be bound

  395. by so many things.

  396. What about things

  397. like this?

  398. On believing

  399. in Jesus,

  400. you're objectively

  401. free

  402. from trying to make

  403. yourself acceptable

  404. to God.

  405. You're objectively

  406. free.

  407. In Jesus,

  408. you can boldly

  409. approach God

  410. because of who

  411. Jesus is

  412. and yet subjectively,

  413. we all still think

  414. that it's about

  415. our performance.

  416. That when we mess up,

  417. it's much more about

  418. running from God

  419. in fear

  420. than running to God

  421. for forgiveness.

  422. just like the Israelites.

  423. Geographically

  424. out of bondage

  425. but spiritually

  426. still so enslaved.

  427. What about this?

  428. Sin.

  429. Still in bondage

  430. to sin.

  431. All of us.

  432. That in Jesus

  433. we're no longer

  434. what we once were

  435. but are what we were

  436. one day be.

  437. The old has gone,

  438. the new has come.

  439. And yet still,

  440. doesn't the old man

  441. still creep up

  442. and show his face

  443. so often?

  444. So we were playing

  445. football on Friday night

  446. and Aaron,

  447. in all of his

  448. youthful enthusiasm,

  449. took a massive

  450. swipe at the ball.

  451. Fortunately,

  452. the ball had long

  453. since left

  454. and all that was

  455. in the way

  456. was my leg.

  457. And I just,

  458. in that moment,

  459. just snapped.

  460. And it was the old man,

  461. the one who got

  462. really cross and angry

  463. and started shouting.

  464. And would have

  465. sought retaliation

  466. if I could have

  467. walked at the point.

  468. Isn't it true?

  469. Free, but still.

  470. So often in bondage

  471. and then in idols.

  472. Idols that so readily

  473. creep up in our lives

  474. and say,

  475. serve me.

  476. Serve us.

  477. The idol of Korea

  478. that you are,

  479. how high up the ladder

  480. you get.

  481. Money.

  482. That secretly

  483. we do all think

  484. that we're the exception

  485. to the rule.

  486. And that we can serve

  487. both God and money

  488. and our bank account

  489. is actually what defines us.

  490. Our relationships

  491. and they all bow at the door

  492. and they say,

  493. serve me.

  494. That though we're free

  495. in Jesus forever,

  496. so often we're still

  497. in bondage.

  498. It's like our

  499. systematic theology.

  500. Past,

  501. when we believed in Jesus,

  502. we're justified,

  503. we're free from the penalty

  504. of sin.

  505. Present,

  506. being sanctified.

  507. sanctified.

  508. We are being freed

  509. from the power of sin

  510. that it's losing

  511. its grip on us.

  512. And then in the future,

  513. glorification,

  514. we will be free

  515. from the very presence

  516. of sin.

  517. The problem is

  518. that middle one

  519. is a story.

  520. The other two

  521. are kind of instantaneous,

  522. but this one

  523. is a story.

  524. God is working out

  525. his purposes

  526. to loosen the grip

  527. of idols

  528. and sin

  529. and still trying

  530. to do it

  531. by our works

  532. from us,

  533. so it's going

  534. to take time.

  535. John 8,

    John 8:36

  536. verse 36,

  537. so if the sun

  538. sets you free,

  539. you will be free

  540. indeed.

  541. Two weeks ago,

  542. I had three sets

  543. of people over

  544. for fajitas.

  545. I can only really

  546. make fajitas,

  547. so if you're invited

  548. around,

  549. that's what we're having.

  550. If you're a vegetarian,

  551. bring something.

  552. And I made three sets

  553. of fajitas,

  554. and I have to say,

  555. every time I made them,

  556. they got a little better.

  557. And the reason

  558. they got a little better

  559. is because on Monday,

  560. I made a massive

  561. bowl of chicken,

  562. and I poured the marinade

  563. in,

  564. and it sat in my fridge.

  565. So on Monday,

  566. the chicken was

  567. slightly spicy.

  568. On Tuesday,

  569. the chicken was

  570. a little bit more spicy,

  571. but by Thursday,

  572. man,

  573. beautiful.

  574. so much spice

  575. and juiciness

  576. and flavor

  577. because the marinade

  578. had penetrated

  579. right into the meat.

  580. This is the thing.

  581. We're all

  582. still in bondage

  583. to many,

  584. many things.

  585. And how are we going

  586. to get ourselves free?

  587. We're going to

  588. marinate ourselves

  589. in the gospel.

  590. We're going to

  591. remind ourselves

  592. every day

  593. that we are free

  594. in Jesus,

  595. that we don't need

  596. to worship

  597. what we once worshipped.

  598. We don't need

  599. to perform

  600. like once

  601. we used to think

  602. that we had to perform.

  603. That we're going

  604. to let his salvation,

  605. his freedom,

  606. work its way

  607. into every part

  608. of our lives.

  609. Abraham Lincoln

  610. signed the

  611. Emancipation Proclamation

  612. on the 1st of January,

  613. 1863.

  614. However,

  615. because the Civil War

  616. in the South

  617. still went on,

  618. and the Confederates

  619. still had control,

  620. if you were a slave

  621. in Texas,

  622. you weren't actually

  623. free until the 19th

  624. of June,

  625. 1865.

  626. The two and a half

  627. years,

  628. your status

  629. was declared free.

  630. But it took

  631. two and a half years

  632. for the news

  633. to travel

  634. and for you

  635. to finally be free.

  636. News travelled

  637. really slowly.

  638. But I have to say

  639. in our lives,

  640. news travels

  641. even slower.

  642. And therefore,

  643. we need to keep

  644. telling ourselves

  645. this good news.

  646. Jesus has set us free.

  647. And he's set us free

  648. forever.

  649. Tell yourself

  650. you're free in Christ

  651. every day

  652. because we forget

  653. all the time.

  654. Salvation is

  655. freedom

  656. from bondage.

  657. Second point,

  658. salvation is crossing

  659. over by grace.

  660. Salvation is crossing

  661. over by grace.

  662. Just look back

  663. at verse 13.

  664. Moses answered

  665. the people,

  666. do not be afraid,

  667. stand firm

  668. and you will see

  669. the deliverance

  670. the Lord will bring

  671. you today.

  672. The Egyptians

  673. you see today

  674. you will never see

  675. again.

  676. The Lord will fight

  677. for you.

  678. You need only

  679. be still.

  680. You don't get

  681. a better representation

  682. of grace

  683. than that.

  684. Stand over there,

  685. don't do anything,

  686. just watch

  687. and see that God

  688. will win for you.

  689. Seems like

  690. it's all grace.

  691. seems like

  692. they're going

  693. to get free

  694. not because

  695. of their efforts

  696. in fighting

  697. but because

  698. God is going

  699. to set them free.

  700. And all night

  701. the wind blows,

  702. the waters part

  703. and they go by

  704. on dry ground

  705. with a wall

  706. on their left

  707. and a wall

  708. on their right.

  709. And this division

  710. is explicit.

  711. Do you see

  712. how the Israelites

  713. have light

  714. in verse 20

  715. but the Egyptians

  716. are still in darkness.

  717. they cross over

  718. by grace

  719. because God

  720. won the day.

  721. Bondage

  722. to freedom.

  723. Instantaneous

  724. death to life.

  725. Darkness

  726. to light.

  727. Unadopted

  728. to adopted.

  729. Dominion of darkness

  730. to the kingdom

  731. of the sun.

  732. Old creature

  733. becomes new creature.

  734. Unregenerate

  735. becomes regenerate.

  736. Condemned

  737. becomes saved.

  738. The area

  739. of bondage

  740. becomes new.

  741. Freedom.

  742. It's a change

  743. of status.

  744. salvation is

  745. crossing over

  746. by grace.

  747. So someone

  748. asks,

  749. are you a Christian?

  750. How would you

  751. answer,

  752. are you a Christian?

  753. Perhaps you'll

  754. answer,

  755. I'm really trying.

  756. Some days

  757. more than others

  758. I'm working

  759. hard on it.

  760. can I say

  761. if that's your answer,

  762. you haven't understood

  763. this at all.

  764. Because what we

  765. talk about

  766. in Christianity

  767. is crossing

  768. over by grace.

  769. We believe

  770. in Jesus

  771. instantly,

  772. we're justified.

  773. It's binary,

  774. yes or no.

  775. It's not about

  776. effort.

  777. One point

  778. they were in

  779. the land

  780. of bondage,

  781. the next

  782. moment

  783. they're free

  784. as they

  785. cross over.

  786. It's crossing

  787. over

  788. by grace.

  789. There's no

  790. middle,

  791. there's no

  792. almost justified,

  793. there's no

  794. quasi-righteous,

  795. there's no

  796. diet

  797. Christian.

  798. It's in

  799. or out.

  800. But I know

  801. what some people

  802. say,

  803. but you need

  804. faith,

  805. that's what I

  806. need to add.

  807. You need a

  808. good,

  809. strong faith.

  810. Well that's

  811. where I think

  812. this is so

  813. helpful.

  814. Because all

  815. the Israelites

  816. cross over,

  817. and as they

  818. walk through

  819. on dry ground,

  820. there's a wall

  821. of water on

  822. their right

  823. and a wall

  824. of water

  825. on their left.

  826. And I dare

  827. say some

  828. people swagger

  829. across.

  830. Isn't God

  831. great?

  832. He's won

  833. the day

  834. for us.

  835. Woo!

  836. But I bet

  837. there's some

  838. other people

  839. who are

  840. clinging to

  841. their friends

  842. going,

  843. we're going

  844. to die,

  845. we're going

  846. to die,

  847. we're going

  848. to die.

  849. Do you

  850. see,

  851. it's not

  852. the quality

  853. of faith.

  854. It's the

  855. object of

  856. our faith.

  857. That God

  858. has won

  859. the day

  860. so that

  861. we don't

  862. have to.

  863. Do you

  864. know I

  865. had the

  866. awesome

  867. privilege

  868. before

  869. Christmas

  870. of hanging

  871. out with

  872. Ruby,

  873. before she

  874. went to be

  875. with the

  876. Lord,

  877. and she

  878. had absolute

  879. confidence of

  880. where she's

  881. going because

  882. she crossed

  883. over by

  884. grace.

  885. Similarly

  886. with Ruth

  887. as I've

  888. seen her

  889. and so

  890. many of

  891. you have

  892. seen her,

  893. real

  894. confidence.

  895. She'll be

  896. with the

  897. Lord because

  898. she knows

  899. what it

  900. is to

  901. cross

  902. over by

  903. grace.

  904. She's not

  905. trusting in

  906. her performance

  907. but trusting

  908. that Jesus

  909. nailed her.

  910. Salvation is

  911. crossing over

  912. by grace.

  913. It's what

  914. it is.

  915. Here's the

  916. last thing.

  917. Salvation is

  918. possible through

  919. only through

  920. a mediator.

  921. Look at

  922. verse 11.

  923. they were

  924. terrified and

  925. cried out to

  926. the Lord.

  927. They said to

  928. Moses and

  929. then they

  930. have this

  931. big moan.

  932. Drop down

  933. to verse

  934. 15.

  935. Then the

  936. Lord said

  937. to Moses,

  938. why are you

  939. crying out

  940. to me?

  941. Moses hasn't

  942. been crying

  943. out.

  944. In fact,

  945. he's been

  946. the one

  947. who's been

  948. getting

  949. moaned at.

  950. And yet,

  951. do you see

  952. that Moses

  953. is so

  954. associated

  955. with his

  956. people that

  957. their sin

  958. becomes his

  959. sin?

  960. But then

  961. drop down

  962. to verse

  963. 21,

  964. that as

  965. Moses stretches

  966. out his

  967. hand,

  968. the Lord

  969. sets about

  970. parting the

  971. sea because

  972. Moses is

  973. so associated

  974. with God

  975. that his

  976. power works

  977. through

  978. Moses.

  979. What a

  980. brilliant

  981. mediator,

  982. someone associated

  983. with the

  984. people and

  985. someone associated

  986. with God,

  987. so can be a

  988. perfect middle

  989. man.

  990. And yet,

  991. doesn't that

  992. point so

  993. much better

  994. to the

  995. Lord Jesus

  996. who's not

  997. associated

  998. with us

  999. but became

  1000. like us

  1001. in every

  1002. way?

  1003. And someone

  1004. who wasn't

  1005. just associated

  1006. with God

  1007. but was

  1008. God and

  1009. dwelt

  1010. amongst us

  1011. to be the

  1012. perfect

  1013. mediator.

  1014. God.

  1015. And he

  1016. wasn't just

  1017. condemned

  1018. for the

  1019. sins of

  1020. the people

  1021. on one

  1022. occasion like

  1023. Moses,

  1024. he was

  1025. condemned

  1026. for all

  1027. our sins,

  1028. carried out

  1029. in all

  1030. our lives

  1031. and he

  1032. took them

  1033. upon

  1034. himself.

  1035. Such a

  1036. better

  1037. mediator,

  1038. fully man

  1039. yet fully

  1040. God,

  1041. taking on

  1042. the sins

  1043. of man so

  1044. we can be

  1045. brought to

  1046. God.

  1047. And let's

  1048. not lose

  1049. the significance

  1050. of the

  1051. water.

  1052. Genesis 1-2

  1053. talks about

  1054. the spirit

  1055. of God

  1056. hovering over

  1057. the face

  1058. of the

  1059. water.

  1060. This picture

  1061. of being

  1062. uncreated

  1063. and what

  1064. does God

  1065. do?

  1066. He takes

  1067. uncreation

  1068. and makes

  1069. it creation.

  1070. So what's

  1071. he doing

  1072. in Exodus

  1073. 14 to

  1074. the Egyptians?

  1075. Because they

  1076. don't have

  1077. a mediator.

  1078. Well the

  1079. water comes

  1080. back in over

  1081. the top,

  1082. it's an

  1083. act of

  1084. uncreation,

  1085. it's an

  1086. act of

  1087. decreation

  1088. as they're

  1089. disintegrated.

  1090. Do you

  1091. see it's

  1092. judgment?

  1093. God judges

  1094. the Egyptians

  1095. and gets

  1096. glory for

  1097. himself,

  1098. that for

  1099. enslaving his

  1100. people they're

  1101. called to

  1102. account.

  1103. But let's

  1104. not make the

  1105. fatal error to

  1106. think that

  1107. Israel was

  1108. good and

  1109. the Egyptians

  1110. were bad,

  1111. that's not

  1112. it.

  1113. The Israelites

  1114. would have

  1115. tried to

  1116. fight back

  1117. against the

  1118. Egyptians if

  1119. they could.

  1120. But they

  1121. couldn't,

  1122. they didn't

  1123. have the

  1124. technology.

  1125. Why is

  1126. Israel saved

  1127. and Egypt

  1128. isn't simply

  1129. because God

  1130. showed his

  1131. grace to

  1132. his people

  1133. and not to

  1134. the Egyptians.

  1135. Moses stretched

  1136. out hands over

  1137. waters of

  1138. God's wrath

  1139. and saw them

  1140. separate so his

  1141. people could

  1142. cross over and

  1143. be safe.

  1144. Jesus stretched

  1145. out his hands

  1146. on a cruel

  1147. Roman cross

  1148. and was

  1149. thrown into

  1150. the sea of

  1151. God's wrath

  1152. for us

  1153. so that we

  1154. might cross

  1155. over and be

  1156. safe forever.

  1157. Jesus was

  1158. decreated and

  1159. judged so

  1160. that we could

  1161. be recreated

  1162. and set free.

  1163. There's

  1164. beautiful bookends

  1165. to this story.

  1166. In Exodus

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  1167. chapter 2

  1168. what do we

  1169. start with?

  1170. We start with

  1171. Hebrew infant

  1172. boys littering

  1173. the banks

  1174. of the Nile

  1175. as Egypt

  1176. kills

  1177. and performs

  1178. this infanticide.

  1179. The end of

  1180. chapter 14

  1181. what do we

  1182. have?

  1183. We have

  1184. Hebrew men

  1185. the soldiers

  1186. who came to

  1187. once again

  1188. enslave them

  1189. littered on

  1190. the shore

  1191. dead

  1192. as God

  1193. judges them

  1194. for their

  1195. acts against

  1196. his people.

  1197. Salvation

  1198. you see

  1199. is only

  1200. possible

  1201. through a

  1202. mediator

  1203. and that's

  1204. what we

  1205. perfectly

  1206. have in

  1207. Jesus.

  1208. Just imagine

  1209. then if Sky

  1210. News had a

  1211. roving reporter

  1212. amidst the

  1213. Israelites just

  1214. after they've

  1215. crossed over

  1216. and kind of

  1217. George Alagia

  1218. or one of

  1219. those guys

  1220. gets up and

  1221. puts the

  1222. microphone in

  1223. their face

  1224. of

  1225. let's call him

  1226. Jeremiah and

  1227. says Jeremiah

  1228. how is it

  1229. going?

  1230. This is what

  1231. he might say.

  1232. He says I

  1233. was a foreigner

  1234. in a foreign

  1235. land not my

  1236. home.

  1237. I was in

  1238. cruel bondage

  1239. and under

  1240. judgment and

  1241. sentenced to

  1242. death but I

  1243. took shelter

  1244. under the

  1245. blood of the

  1246. lamb.

  1247. I followed

  1248. my mediator

  1249. to freedom

  1250. and he

  1251. stretched his

  1252. hand so I

  1253. could cross

  1254. over by grace.

  1255. Now we're on

  1256. the way to the

  1257. promised land

  1258. but we're not

  1259. there yet.

  1260. We're following

  1261. God's lead.

  1262. He's going to

  1263. give us this

  1264. law to make us

  1265. a distinct

  1266. people and he's

  1267. going to dwell

  1268. with us in the

  1269. tabernacle to

  1270. remind us

  1271. constantly of our

  1272. need of his

  1273. grace.

  1274. forgiveness.

  1275. One day we'll

  1276. arrive home to

  1277. be with him in

  1278. the place he

  1279. has prepared

  1280. and we'll

  1281. receive fully

  1282. all that he

  1283. has promised.

  1284. It's not

  1285. radically different

  1286. is it to what

  1287. we might say

  1288. this side of

  1289. the cross.

  1290. As Christians

  1291. all that

  1292. language is

  1293. exactly what we

  1294. see in the

  1295. New Testament.

  1296. Two quick

  1297. things to finish.

  1298. number one.

  1299. God gets them

  1300. out and then

  1301. gives them the

  1302. law.

  1303. Grace first.

  1304. He's not

  1305. getting them

  1306. out because

  1307. they've

  1308. obeyed.

  1309. He's getting

  1310. them out so

  1311. they can

  1312. obey.

  1313. They're

  1314. obeying as a

  1315. response to

  1316. grace not a

  1317. requirement for

  1318. grace.

  1319. And this bit

  1320. blew my mind

  1321. this week.

  1322. Just go back

  1323. to verse 13.

  1324. Do not be

  1325. afraid.

  1326. Stand firm and

  1327. you will see

  1328. the deliverance

  1329. the Lord will

  1330. bring you

  1331. today.

  1332. Do you know

  1333. what's so

  1334. beautiful about

  1335. that phrase?

  1336. The deliverance

  1337. of the Lord

  1338. could literally

  1339. be the phrase

  1340. God saves.

  1341. Now we all

  1342. know one bit

  1343. of Hebrew and

  1344. it's that that

  1345. God saves.

  1346. Because it's

  1347. the word

  1348. Yeshua.

  1349. Which will

  1350. become

  1351. in Aramaic

  1352. the word

  1353. Jesus.

  1354. So literally

  1355. God says

  1356. to his people

  1357. through Moses

  1358. stand still

  1359. don't

  1360. do

  1361. anything.

  1362. Your salvation

  1363. will come and

  1364. it will be

  1365. through looking

  1366. at the Jesus

  1367. of the Lord.

  1368. It will be by

  1369. staring at Jesus

  1370. where you will

  1371. be saved.

  1372. And so what

  1373. do we learn

  1374. from Exodus

  1375. 14?

  1376. We learn that

  1377. salvation is

  1378. freedom from

  1379. bondage and

  1380. we need to

  1381. work it into

  1382. every part of

  1383. our lives.

  1384. Salvation is

  1385. crossing over

  1386. by grace.

  1387. Trusting that

  1388. God has done

  1389. it and walking

  1390. through from

  1391. one side to

  1392. the other

  1393. instantaneous

  1394. justification.

  1395. And salvation

  1396. is only possible

  1397. through the

  1398. mediator.

  1399. There is a

  1400. great difference

  1401. between getting

  1402. free and

  1403. getting safe.

  1404. life.

  1405. But in the

  1406. Lord Jesus

  1407. he sets us

  1408. free and

  1409. will bring us

  1410. safely all the

  1411. way home

  1412. because he's

  1413. that good to

  1414. us.

  1415. Why don't we

  1416. pray?

  1417. The writer to

  1418. the Hebrews

  1419. says how

  1420. shall we

  1421. escape if

  1422. we ignore

  1423. such a

  1424. great

  1425. salvation?

  1426. And so

  1427. Lord as we've

  1428. looked at your

  1429. son through the

  1430. lens of Exodus

  1431. 14, Father we're

  1432. so thankful to

  1433. him.

  1434. We're so thankful

  1435. for him.

  1436. And Father we

  1437. pray that his

  1438. news of free

  1439. grace, of

  1440. absolute

  1441. forgiveness,

  1442. might work

  1443. its way into

  1444. every part of

  1445. our lives.

  1446. Father that we

  1447. would trust him

  1448. that he's won

  1449. where we

  1450. failed, that

  1451. he succeeded

  1452. where we

  1453. flunked, and

  1454. that it is in

  1455. him and only

  1456. in him that

  1457. we are righteous

  1458. and able to

  1459. cross over.

  1460. Father may grace

  1461. be so precious

  1462. to us.

  1463. And Father may

  1464. we love him for

  1465. what he's done.

  1466. May we be those

  1467. this morning who

  1468. simply stand

  1469. still and gaze

  1470. upon him,

  1471. gazing upon him

  1472. in his perfect

  1473. life, in his

  1474. atoning death,

  1475. and in his

  1476. glorious resurrection

  1477. that keeps us

  1478. free for all

  1479. eternity.

  1480. Father bless us

  1481. and be with us.

  1482. Commit these

  1483. things to our

  1484. hearts we pray

  1485. in Jesus glorious

  1486. name.

  1487. Amen.

  1488. Thank you.

  1489. Thank you.

  1490. Thank you.

  1491. If you have any

  1492. questions about

  1493. anything that's

  1494. being said

  1495. this morning

  1496. then please

  1497. feel free to

  1498. speak to either

  1499. myself or the

  1500. John

  1501. after the service.

  1502. When I'm going to

  1503. move into

  1504. short...
