  1. Well, quite a lot has changed in a week.

  2. Enormous things have happened, but one of the biggest things that happened is the transition we're making this morning.

  3. Because if you were here last week, we just got out of Egypt, and today we're just going into Ephesus, which is a massive change.

  4. We've changed from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

  5. We've changed from narrative to epistle.

  6. We've changed from the covenant community being Old Testament Israel to it being the New Testament church.

  7. We've changed continents from Africa to kind of the bridge between Europe and Asia.

  8. We've changed country from Egypt to Asia Minor, or if you're a 21st century person, Turkey.

  9. And we're going to study Ephesians, and Ephesians is my favorite letter.

  10. So I am so excited to be able to start it off for us this morning.

  11. It is a majestic letter.

  12. It's an enormous letter.

  13. This is what John Mackay, he's Scottish, but he was the former president of Princeton Theological Seminary said.

  14. To this book of Ephesians, I owe my life.

  15. At the age of 14, reading it for the first time, I saw a new world.

  16. Everything was now fresh.

  17. I had a new outlook, new experiences, new attitudes to other people.

  18. I loved God anew, and Jesus became the center of everything.

  19. I had been quickened by this letter, and was now really alive.

  20. And when he came to Edinburgh in 1948 to lecture at New College,

  21. he spent a whole autumn term preaching on the book of Ephesians, and this is what he wrote.

  22. Ephesians is the greatest, maturest, and for our time most relevant of all Paul's works.

  23. For here is distilled the essence of the true Christian religion,

  24. the most authoritative, consummate compendium of the Christian faith.

  25. This letter is pure music.

  26. What we read here is truth that sings, doctrine set to music.

  27. Now one of the things I love to do, being the pastor of this church,

  28. is to sample the many coffee shops there are in Brunsfield.

  29. I have particular favorites, and depending on who I'm meeting and what the purpose is,

  30. we'll go to a different place.

  31. So if it's a normal meeting, we'll go to Costa.

  32. If it's a breakfast, we'll always be at Project Coffee.

  33. If it's a difficult meeting, we'll go to the chocolate tree.

  34. And what I've discovered in the chocolate tree is that they sell chocolate cake,

  35. which is underwhelmingly small.

  36. You get it, and it's like this little triangle.

  37. And you think, 3.70 for that.

  38. And do you know what?

  39. I've been there four times.

  40. Because you're all quite happy people, so the chocolate tree is not needed that much.

  41. And I can never finish it.

  42. This tiny little triangle of chocolate cake, and I have a voracious appetite.

  43. And I can never finish it because it's so rich.

  44. It's so sweet.

  45. And it is so chocolatey.

  46. And if we're not careful, Ephesians can be like the chocolate cake from the chocolate tree.

  47. That we can't finish it.

  48. Because it's so densely packed.

  49. So full of great theological things.

  50. And so we're going to have to go steady.

  51. We're going to have to take small bites at a time.

  52. And we're going to have to chew it properly, or else we'll have indigestion that will last us till well after Easter.

  53. So we've got to go careful.

  54. It is densely theologically rich.

  55. It is like a doxological death by chocolate that is loaded with doctrine.

  56. We're going to be here for 12 weeks.

  57. We're going to do it in two chunks.

  58. And we're going to have a great time and learn wonderful things about the Lord Jesus.

  59. But if I say to you, Moby, what do you think of?

  60. If I say, Moby, what do you think of?

  61. I dare say you're thinking of one of two things.

  62. And it will be largely dependent on your age.

  63. If you're seasoned, you'll be thinking Moby Dick.

  64. The big white whale, the arch nemesis of Captain Ahab.

  65. And the book written by Herman Melville.

  66. That great American author.

  67. Or if you're young, or trendy, or both, you'll be thinking of Moby, the New York-based electronic music DJ.

  68. And if you're not thinking of either, you just missed.

  69. You're just kind of middle-aged and you missed both things.

  70. And the really interesting thing about Moby is his proper name is Richard Melville Hall.

  71. It's his real name.

  72. And the reason his real middle name is Melville is because he is a distant relative of Herman Melville, the one who wrote Moby Dick.

  73. That's free.

  74. You can bring that up over lunch.

  75. But what you may not know about Moby is that Moby is a Christian.

  76. And he was on the front cover of Relevant Magazine.

  77. And this is what it said.

  78. Moby, why he loves Jesus but not the church.

  79. Moby, why he loves Jesus but not the church.

  80. And this is an incredibly prevalent view in our day.

  81. We really like what Jesus has to say, but church is a bit of a hassle.

  82. We really like Jesus, but hanging out with his people is a bit too much effort.

  83. And what we need, if we're not going to be Mobyites, that's a new word, is we need the book of Ephesians.

  84. Because the book of Ephesians tells us that we cannot love Jesus but loathe his bride, the church.

  85. Have you ever had that in your life where you have a friend who gets married to someone you don't really like and it's just awkward?

  86. Every time you have them around for fajitas, it's just really tense.

  87. And Ephesians tells us we can't do that.

  88. If we love Jesus, we've got to love and invest and be part of his bride, the church.

  89. We can't just have one-dimensional Christianity that it's me and Jesus.

  90. We've got to have three-dimensional Christianity that it's me and Jesus.

  91. Me and Jesus' people that I'm called to belong with.

  92. And me and Jesus and Jesus' people pressing out into the world.

  93. Three dimensions.

  94. And so we need Ephesians and it's going to be so helpful to us.

  95. Ephesus at the time of writing is a big metropolis, about 300,000 people.

  96. It's the most important city in the Roman province of Asia Minor.

  97. And it is the cultural melting pot where east meets west.

  98. Dominating the city skyline is the temple of Artemis.

  99. Do you remember in Acts 19 when they chant for three hours,

  100. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.

  101. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.

  102. And it's a church that Paul knows really well.

  103. We have more about Ephesus over a longer period than any other New Testament church.

  104. Paul brings the gospel to Ephesus in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  105. Luke gives it more column inches than any other city in Acts.

  106. We then have in Acts 20 the tearful goodbye between the Apostle Paul and the Ephesian elders

  107. when they gather at Miletus.

  108. We read in 1 Timothy 1 that Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to curtail and combat false teaching.

  109. Then by the time we get to Revelation chapter 2,

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  110. we have a progress report from Jesus himself.

  111. And he says three things about the church.

  112. He says,

  113. And then probably the most helpful thing we have is this book of Ephesians,

  114. this letter that Paul penned to the church sometime when he was in prison.

  115. And it is an incredible letter.

  116. It's probably a circular letter meant for all the churches in Asia Minor.

  117. This verse we're going to read, verse 1, where it says,

  118. To the saints in Ephesus.

  119. That's probably a later edition as the early manuscripts don't have that.

  120. So it's probably a circular letter, but it becomes synonymous with Ephesus.

  121. And it's a letter of two halves that we're going to see.

  122. The first half, chapters 1 to 3, a doctrine.

  123. The second half of duty.

  124. Or exposition and then exhortation.

  125. Or what God has done and then what we must do.

  126. And therefore we're going to fill our lives full of the Lord Jesus.

  127. And then we're going to work out what that looks like Monday to Saturday.

  128. The letter seeks to shape the believer by reminding them how wonderful God's work is in Christ.

  129. How significant their unity is in Christ.

  130. And what living for Christ looks like in life.

  131. So let's dig in.

  132. Let's get to work.

  133. And start reading and not talking.

  134. It is a bit like Saving Private Ryan.

  135. If you've seen that film, there's no kind of warm-up.

  136. The first thing you see is this enormous battle scene.

  137. It's like that in Ephesians.

  138. There's no warm-up.

  139. What we're reading today is like the biggest vista of salvation history you could ever hope to see.

  140. And so we're going to have to really concentrate and hold on to our hats.

  141. It's also one massive sentence what we're going to read.

  142. Verse 3 to verse 14.

  143. There's not one iota of punctuation anywhere.

  144. It's almost like Paul just gushes it out.

  145. But we're going to have to breathe because I can't do it in one breath.

  146. Martin Lloyd-Jones preached 27 sermons on these 11 verses.

  147. And we're going to be done by 25 to 1.

  148. This is what Paul writes.

  149. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  150. to God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus,

  151. grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  152. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  153. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  154. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

  155. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ,

  156. in accordance with his pleasure and will,

  157. to the praise of his glorious grace,

  158. which he has freely given us in the one he loves.

  159. In him we have redemption through his blood,

  160. the forgiveness of sins,

  161. in accordance with the riches of God's grace,

  162. that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

  163. He made known to us the mystery of his will,

  164. according to his good pleasure which he purposed in Christ,

  165. to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment,

  166. to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

  167. In him we were also chosen,

  168. having been predestined according to the plan of him

  169. who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

  170. in order that we,

  171. who were the first to put our hope in Christ,

  172. might be for the praise of his glory.

  173. And you also were included in Christ

  174. when you heard the message of truth,

  175. the gospel of your salvation,

  176. when you believed.

  177. You were marked in him with a seal,

  178. the promised Holy Spirit,

  179. who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance

  180. until the redemption of those who are God's possession

  181. to the praise of his glorious grace.

  182. Well,

  183. doing that in one breath would just about kill you, I think.

  184. The first thing we see is blessed.

  185. Verse 3 is like the big sentence,

  186. the big theme,

  187. the thesis

  188. that he's going to unpack in the following verses.

  189. It is a doxology.

  190. He says,

  191. this is who I am,

  192. this is who you are,

  193. and his big headline is praise.

  194. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  195. He's doing this to worship God.

  196. Praise is mentioned four times

  197. in this chapter in verse 3,

  198. in verse 6,

  199. in verse 12,

  200. and at the very end in verse 14.

  201. And it's a funny thing, isn't it,

  202. that in our world,

  203. people praise the funniest things.

  204. So I thought I was going to be quite middle-aged

  205. and order some new kitchen utensils.

  206. And the only kitchen utensil I really know how to use

  207. is the wooden spoon.

  208. So I was reading a review on Amazon.com,

  209. and this is what one woman wrote

  210. about wooden spoons.

  211. The spoons arrived promptly

  212. and in excellent condition.

  213. I put them to work straight away.

  214. They are absolutely marvelous.

  215. I'm overjoyed with my purchase.

  216. They enhance my cooking experience no end.

  217. I don't know how I survived without them for so long.

  218. These spoons are my savior.

  219. The best £2.20 I've ever spent.

  220. It's incredible praise, isn't it?

  221. It seems so pathetic.

  222. And yet what Paul is praising in this letter

  223. is the only rightful person

  224. in all the universe that we should praise.

  225. There's an amazing wordplay going on.

  226. That word praise at the beginning

  227. is the word blessed.

  228. So literally it says,

  229. blessed be the God and Father

  230. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  231. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms

  232. with every spiritual blessing.

  233. We bless God,

  234. we speak rightly of Him,

  235. because He's poured out so much blessing on us.

  236. He has literally given us the kitchen sink.

  237. Just poured it out and poured it out.

  238. And therefore,

  239. and therefore,

  240. Paul says,

  241. speak rightly,

  242. speak adoringly about you.

  243. We bless Him because He's blessed us

  244. with every spiritual blessing.

  245. And He's done it in the heavenly realms.

  246. He's done it in the heavenly realms.

  247. Now what does that mean?

  248. It's a word exclusive to Ephesians.

  249. It is a way of saying

  250. this isn't the only reality.

  251. There is a spiritual reality

  252. above this physical reality.

  253. A larger reality exists

  254. where Christ is already exalted.

  255. Where believers participate in His victory

  256. and where spiritual forces are opposed.

  257. Though believers live physically on this earth,

  258. they receive spiritual resources

  259. and their identity

  260. from this higher plane.

  261. That's what it's talking about.

  262. Spiritual realm.

  263. Heavenly reality.

  264. Literally the heavenlies.

  265. That's what Paul

  266. is praising God

  267. because He's been included

  268. and blessed in that realm.

  269. And so he unveils

  270. four massive blessings.

  271. And the first one is this.

  272. Chosen and adopted.

  273. They're in verses 4, 5 and 6.

  274. For He chose us.

  275. Verse 5.

  276. He predestined us for adoption

  277. to sonship

  278. through Jesus Christ.

  279. Now when we talk about

  280. words like choosing

  281. and predestination,

  282. some people's blood pressure spikes.

  283. They want to throw things.

  284. But I don't think

  285. that it is that unusual

  286. in the Bible,

  287. this idea of choosing.

  288. I think we see it

  289. all over the place.

  290. Abraham isn't having

  291. a quiet time

  292. in Ur of the Chaldeans

  293. and suddenly thinks

  294. I'd really like to be

  295. the progenitor

  296. of a great nation.

  297. And I'm going to leave Ur

  298. and go to a land

  299. that I don't know.

  300. God sovereignly chooses.

  301. I don't think Noah

  302. is studying nautical engineering

  303. at Napier University

  304. in the middle

  305. of the Saudi Arabian desert.

  306. He says,

  307. I think I'd really like

  308. to do a little project

  309. and build a big ark.

  310. even though it's not

  311. rained before.

  312. God seems to sovereignly choose.

  313. Moses,

  314. as we saw in our Exodus series,

  315. isn't chilling

  316. in the desert of Midian

  317. and thinks,

  318. at the age of 80,

  319. I should really set about

  320. the emancipation

  321. of my people in Egypt.

  322. God meets him

  323. in a burning bush

  324. and says,

  325. I've chosen you.

  326. Gideon

  327. isn't thinking,

  328. I really like to beat up

  329. to Midianites.

  330. He's hiding in a hole

  331. as a big wimp.

  332. David isn't the front runner

  333. for ascension

  334. to Israel's throne.

  335. He is from a farming family

  336. in the redneck part

  337. of Israel

  338. with seven more

  339. impressive brothers

  340. and yet God

  341. seems to choose.

  342. Jonah isn't attending

  343. a Friends of Nineveh

  344. peace rally

  345. and decides going

  346. as an envoy

  347. to Assyria

  348. would be a good idea.

  349. Not at all.

  350. He's a bigoted,

  351. nationalistic,

  352. Israelite supremacist.

  353. God says,

  354. I've got a job for you.

  355. I've chosen you

  356. for this task.

  357. Levi isn't sitting

  358. at the dock

  359. at the tax booth

  360. in Galilee

  361. collecting the money

  362. owed to the Roman government

  363. from the fishermen

  364. and yet Jesus

  365. walks straight up

  366. to him and says,

  367. follow me.

  368. Seems there's

  369. some sovereign choosing.

  370. Yes, they obey

  371. but it seems that God

  372. has taken the initiative.

  373. Even Paul

  374. who writes these words

  375. knows this to be true.

  376. He's not journeying

  377. to Damascus

  378. to attend a

  379. Christianity Explored course.

  380. He's going to

  381. put people in prison

  382. to beat some up

  383. and kill a few

  384. if necessary

  385. and yet Jesus

  386. meets him

  387. and says,

  388. I've got a job for you.

  389. There seems to be

  390. on the face of it

  391. some sovereign choosing.

  392. From the mouth of Jesus

  393. in John 15, 16

  394. you did not choose me

  395. but I chose you.

  396. Same for you and me

  397. I think.

  398. If we're believing

  399. in Jesus today

  400. yes,

  401. we put our trust

  402. in Jesus

  403. but it seems

  404. that he initiated

  405. it.

  406. He was pursuing us

  407. by his grace.

  408. That's a really good thing

  409. I think.

  410. It's almost

  411. a much nicer feeling

  412. to be the chosen

  413. rather than the chooser.

  414. It's always nicer

  415. to be the one

  416. proposed to

  417. certainly less nerve-wracking

  418. than to be the one

  419. proposed to

  420. rather than the proposer.

  421. And that seems to be

  422. what Paul

  423. is talking about here.

  424. That God has initiated

  425. he stepped towards

  426. each of us

  427. to offer grace.

  428. relentlessly pursuing us.

  429. And he started

  430. about this plan

  431. before the creation

  432. of the world.

  433. Now I don't care

  434. how old you look.

  435. You weren't there

  436. before the creation

  437. of the world.

  438. God has been

  439. in this initiating

  440. phase

  441. stepping towards

  442. each of us

  443. in grace.

  444. that we might

  445. put our faith

  446. in his son.

  447. Notice that he's

  448. chosen us

  449. for a reason

  450. to be holy

  451. and blameless

  452. in his sight.

  453. That as we accept

  454. this grace

  455. he sets about

  456. work

  457. to change us

  458. to transform us

  459. justifying us

  460. giving holiness

  461. objectively

  462. but then changing us

  463. sanctifying us

  464. to make us holy

  465. subjectively.

  466. notice in verse 5

  467. it is in love.

  468. We're not talking

  469. about a mechanical

  470. celestial lottery

  471. the motivator

  472. for this

  473. is because

  474. he loves us

  475. and he's chosen us

  476. and he's stepping

  477. towards each of us.

  478. Notice as well

  479. this idea of adoption.

  480. Adoption is always

  481. at the bequest

  482. of the parents

  483. I think.

  484. There are many children

  485. who just force

  486. themselves on two

  487. adults and say

  488. adopt me.

  489. And God says

  490. I've adopted

  491. speaking of children

  492. God says

  493. I've adopted you.

  494. I've adopted you

  495. for a purpose

  496. and adoption

  497. in this culture

  498. is a big deal.

  499. It's not only

  500. status being

  501. brought into a family

  502. but it's also

  503. vocational.

  504. That you always do

  505. what your father did.

  506. If your dad was a baker

  507. you were a baker.

  508. If your dad was a fisherman

  509. you were a fisherman

  510. if your dad was a carpenter.

  511. You ended up a carpenter.

  512. Just put your hand up

  513. if you do the same job

  514. your father or mother did.

  515. Not many.

  516. A few.

  517. More than I thought.

  518. But in this culture

  519. you did what your father did.

  520. And so Jesus

  521. is the son

  522. par excellence

  523. because he says

  524. I only do

  525. what I see my father doing.

  526. I only do the work

  527. that I see my dad doing.

  528. And so when he adopts us

  529. as sons

  530. he adopts us

  531. to do what he's doing.

  532. To put his character

  533. on full display.

  534. To mirror what he's like

  535. to the watching world.

  536. God.

  537. I've adopted you

  538. to sonship

  539. to display what I'm like.

  540. What does this look like?

  541. Well surely the first thing

  542. is that we're always

  543. stepping towards people

  544. in grace.

  545. No matter who they are.

  546. Not because they're

  547. meritorious

  548. or virtuous

  549. but because we're

  550. reflecting what God is like.

  551. That he steps towards us.

  552. The first great

  553. spiritual blessing

  554. that Paul says

  555. is that we're chosen

  556. and adopted

  557. by God.

  558. Second spiritual blessing

  559. and these are less controversial

  560. so we'll spend less time.

  561. Is that we're redeemed

  562. and forgiven.

  563. We don't really have

  564. the concept of redemption

  565. in our world.

  566. I guess the closest we get

  567. is when you buy your laptop

  568. back from cash converters.

  569. Or you get your wedding ring

  570. back from the pawnbrokers

  571. if it's gone really bad.

  572. Either way.

  573. Redemption though

  574. is absolutely tied

  575. to slavery.

  576. And the problem

  577. we have

  578. when we think of slavery

  579. is we think of

  580. American colonialism.

  581. But in the Roman world

  582. you could become a slave

  583. for a number of reasons.

  584. One would be

  585. military conquest.

  586. But the main way

  587. you became a slave

  588. is you became bankrupt.

  589. So if I was living

  590. in Ephesus

  591. I'd think

  592. I'm going to open

  593. a perfume shop.

  594. And I open it

  595. in downtown Ephesus

  596. and it goes really well

  597. for a while.

  598. But then competition

  599. increases

  600. and demand decreases

  601. and the bills rise

  602. and there's more

  603. going out than coming in

  604. and I can't cope

  605. I can't keep up.

  606. But I can't declare

  607. myself bankrupt

  608. because there's no

  609. bankruptcy laws.

  610. I can't call in

  611. the receivers.

  612. I have to sell myself

  613. into slavery

  614. until I've paid back

  615. the debt that I owe.

  616. And the only way

  617. I'll get out

  618. is either that I pay

  619. the debt back myself

  620. or somebody

  621. pays it for me.

  622. This is exactly

  623. what has happened

  624. in the gospel.

  625. That we by choice

  626. and compulsion

  627. have sold ourselves

  628. voluntarily

  629. and absolutely

  630. into slavery

  631. of sin.

  632. We've accrued

  633. an insurmountable debt

  634. that even given

  635. all eternity

  636. we could never pay back.

  637. And yet God

  638. steps towards us

  639. in grace

  640. and he pays it for us

  641. but he doesn't do

  642. a bank transfer.

  643. He doesn't use

  644. his mobile phone

  645. to ping it.

  646. He pays

  647. with the costliest

  648. resource

  649. in the whole

  650. entire world.

  651. He pays

  652. with the blood

  653. of his own

  654. son.

  655. And as he dies

  656. our death

  657. in our place

  658. for our sin

  659. he holds out

  660. to us forgiveness

  661. and life.

  662. Spiritual blessing

  663. number two

  664. is redemption

  665. and forgiveness.

  666. Putting grace

  667. on glorious display

  668. God is that good.

  669. Now perhaps

  670. you're here

  671. this morning

  672. and you don't

  673. know this Jesus

  674. you don't know

  675. what it is

  676. to be redeemed

  677. and forgiven

  678. and actually

  679. if you're honest

  680. you think

  681. I don't really

  682. need it.

  683. I'm not really

  684. a sinner

  685. God could really

  686. have no beef

  687. with me.

  688. I'm really

  689. not a slave.

  690. Well I want

  691. to lend you

  692. the church

  693. for a week.

  694. I want to lend

  695. you the church

  696. to put a display

  697. up of your life

  698. and we're going

  699. to display it all.

  700. We're going

  701. to display

  702. every thought

  703. and attitude

  704. idea

  705. and word

  706. you've said.

  707. We're going

  708. to plaster

  709. the whole thing.

  710. It's a good job

  711. we've got such

  712. a big church

  713. because some

  714. of you

  715. look quite old.

  716. Now there'll be

  717. some bits

  718. that you really

  719. want to show

  720. people.

  721. Look at this

  722. this is where

  723. I got my

  724. five metre

  725. swimming badge.

  726. Look at this

  727. this is where

  728. I got grade

  729. eight on the

  730. cello.

  731. Look at this

  732. this is where

  733. I made my

  734. first fajita.

  735. There's some

  736. bits that you'd

  737. be really proud

  738. of and say

  739. come on in

  740. and see this.

  741. There'd be

  742. other stuff

  743. that you would

  744. be appalled

  745. if people saw

  746. thoughts that

  747. you'd had

  748. things that

  749. you'd done.

  750. The Bible

  751. will call that

  752. sin.

  753. It's not just

  754. being judged

  755. by a human

  756. authority

  757. it's being judged

  758. by a holy God

  759. whose standard

  760. is perfect.

  761. If that's

  762. us

  763. there's even

  764. one square

  765. inch of the

  766. wall we

  767. would want

  768. people to

  769. see.

  770. We need

  771. Jesus.

  772. We need

  773. redemption

  774. and forgiveness.

  775. Number three

  776. disclosed and

  777. revealed.

  778. Look at

  779. verse 10

  780. look at

  781. verse 9

  782. rather

  783. he made

  784. known to

  785. us the

  786. mystery of

  787. his will

  788. according to

  789. his good

  790. purpose which

  791. he purposed

  792. in Christ

  793. to be put

  794. into effect

  795. when the

  796. times reach

  797. their fulfilment

  798. to bring

  799. unity to

  800. all things

  801. in heaven

  802. and on

  803. earth

  804. under

  805. Christ.

  806. It's the

  807. word mystery

  808. you see

  809. is where

  810. we sometimes

  811. go wrong.

  812. He's not

  813. thinking

  814. Hercule Poirot

  815. Miss Marple

  816. or Sherlock

  817. Holmes.

  818. It's not that

  819. kind of

  820. mystery.

  821. It's a

  822. secret

  823. that's been

  824. concealed

  825. that has

  826. now been

  827. revealed.

  828. It's something

  829. that can only

  830. be known

  831. by being

  832. disclosed.

  833. Christ.

  834. And the

  835. Bible says

  836. that now

  837. we know

  838. that mystery

  839. now we're

  840. copied

  841. into the

  842. memo

  843. we're now

  844. in the

  845. divine

  846. loop

  847. and know

  848. what all

  849. the world

  850. is about

  851. and where

  852. it's

  853. heading.

  854. Spiritual

  855. blessing

  856. number three

  857. is that we

  858. have seen

  859. the whole

  860. picture.

  861. We've seen

  862. how it

  863. started

  864. and where

  865. it's

  866. heading.

  867. We're

  868. privy to

  869. the entire

  870. eschatological

  871. plan of

  872. God's.

  873. It's again

  874. such good

  875. news.

  876. Because from

  877. the ground

  878. zero of

  879. our lives

  880. it seems

  881. like it's

  882. all out

  883. of control.

  884. Seems like

  885. the news

  886. isn't getting

  887. better.

  888. Human

  889. wickedness

  890. seems to

  891. be getting

  892. worse.

  893. Seems like

  894. it's running

  895. amok.

  896. That there's

  897. no one at

  898. the helm

  899. of the

  900. universe.

  901. We see

  902. ISIS and

  903. Ebola and

  904. Ukraine and

  905. Jihadi John and

  906. Greece and the

  907. financial collapse

  908. and cancer and

  909. Syria and

  910. Darfur and

  911. Iraq and

  912. Afghanistan and

  913. Charlie Hebdo and

  914. child poverty and

  915. child soldiers and

  916. child abuse and

  917. the Danish cafe

  918. atrocities in North

  919. Korea, corruption,

  920. broken promises and

  921. a widening poverty

  922. gap and on and on

  923. and on and we

  924. think it's out of

  925. control.

  926. And yet Paul tells

  927. us that it's all

  928. heading somewhere.

  929. It's all heading

  930. to the point where

  931. God's patience is

  932. exhausted and he

  933. sends the Lord

  934. Jesus and the

  935. ultimate aim is to

  936. bring to unity all

  937. things in heaven and

  938. on earth under

  939. Christ.

  940. That's where it's

  941. heading.

  942. To the time and

  943. place where God

  944. enforces the rule of

  945. his son to rule over

  946. absolutely everybody,

  947. absolutely everywhere.

  948. And the glorious

  949. thing is because he's

  950. made known that plan to

  951. us we can be on board

  952. with that plan before

  953. it happens.

  954. That's what happens in

  955. the church.

  956. This is like a

  957. microcosm showing what

  958. the future is going to

  959. look like.

  960. What draws us all

  961. together?

  962. The fact that Jesus

  963. reigns.

  964. He reigns in each of

  965. our lives and as he

  966. reigns in each of our

  967. lives he draws us

  968. together in a family.

  969. The best apologetic for

  970. the church is the

  971. church.

  972. The people looking in

  973. go what a diverse group

  974. of people who seem to

  975. hang out as family and

  976. yet not many of them are

  977. related to each other

  978. biologically.

  979. And as the world sees

  980. that they go there is

  981. something different.

  982. Paul tells us the

  983. reason that's attractive

  984. is because that's where

  985. it's all headed.

  986. To the point where

  987. everybody who loves

  988. Jesus is gathered

  989. together where he

  990. rules and reigns.

  991. Unity is not an

  992. optional byproduct of

  993. church.

  994. It's an absolute

  995. necessity that we cling

  996. to Jesus and cling

  997. together.

  998. because it makes

  999. Jesus look glorious.

  1000. Brings praise from

  1001. our lips.

  1002. Spiritual blessing

  1003. number three is

  1004. disclosed and revealed

  1005. and lastly sealed and

  1006. guaranteed.

1007. Do you see it there?

  1008. When you believed you

1009. were marked in him with

  1010. a seal the promised

1011. Holy Spirit who is a

  1012. deposit guaranteeing our

  1013. inheritance until the

  1014. redemption of those who

  1015. are God's possession.

  1016. This is good news.

  1017. This is good news.

  1018. Because when I believe

  1019. in Jesus the Holy

  1020. Spirit comes and dwells

  1021. within me as the

  1022. resident boss of my

  1023. life.

1024. And as he comes he

1025. molds and shapes me and

  1026. he gives me perseverance

  1027. and things like that

1028. meaning that I will get

  1029. to the end.

1030. Meaning that I can have

  1031. absolute certainty.

1032. When I believe in Jesus

1033. I'm sealed by the Holy

  1034. Spirit who dwells within

  1035. me who's not going

  1036. anywhere and will

1037. ensure and be able to

1038. keep me until the very

  1039. end like a guarantee.

  1040. Like a deposit.

1041. Like paying a bit of

  1042. something up in advance

1043. but quite a big chunk

1044. because you paid for it

1045. in the blood of your son

  1046. and you have this

  1047. guarantee which means

1048. that there will be a

1049. collection day at the end

1050. when it's all brought in.

1051. Now I know what we

  1052. think of guarantees.

  1053. Even John Lewis.

1054. We root around for the

  1055. receipt.

  1056. Still within guarantee

1057. and you take it and you

1058. hold the two things and

  1059. look apologetically towards

  1060. them and just hope

1061. they're going to say yes

  1062. or no whether the

  1063. deposit and guarantee is

  1064. still available.

  1065. This guarantee is

  1066. absolutely sure.

  1067. It's lifelong.

1068. It'll last you all of

  1069. your life.

1070. And if we will but

  1071. trust in Jesus

  1072. sealed and guaranteed

  1073. and welcomed

  1074. forever by God.

1075. I went down to see

  1076. Ruth last Monday.

1077. So frail and so weak

  1078. and yet so steadfast

1079. in her love for the

  1080. Lord.

  1081. Because she had

  1082. absolute confidence

  1083. that it wasn't how

  1084. hard she could cling

  1085. to him.

  1086. It was how much

  1087. he was holding

  1088. on to her.

  1089. Because she knew

1090. what it was to trust

  1091. Jesus to be indwelt

  1092. by the Holy Spirit

  1093. and to be sealed

  1094. and guaranteed.

  1095. Which has been

  1096. cashed in

  1097. just yesterday.

  1098. And she is

  1099. welcome forever

  1100. in the Lord Jesus.

  1101. It's great spiritual

  1102. blessings here.

  1103. Chosen and adopted.

  1104. forgiven and redeemed.

1105. And what are we to do

  1106. with it?

  1107. Well we're to praise

  1108. God.

  1109. We're to thank him

1110. that he's been so good

  1111. and gracious and kind

  1112. to each of us.

1113. This isn't meant to be

  1114. theological ranting.

  1115. This is meant to

  1116. spark our hearts

  1117. and kindle praise

  1118. from our lives.

  1119. The second thing

  1120. is all over this

  1121. chapter is

  1122. in Christ

  1123. in the beloved

  1124. in him

  1125. eleven times

  1126. in him

  1127. in him

  1128. in him

  1129. and therefore

1130. what are we to do?

1131. Well if we want to

  1132. take hold of these

  1133. spiritual blessings

  1134. more and more

  1135. it's about walking

  1136. closer and closer

  1137. with Jesus

1138. that all of our lives

  1139. would be found

  1140. in him

  1141. all of our lives

  1142. would be lived

  1143. for him

  1144. that he would take

  1145. everything from us

  1146. because he alone

  1147. is worthy.

  1148. Therefore how do we

  1149. take hold of this

  1150. and become praiseful

  1151. people?

  1152. By being in him

  1153. and fully in him.

  1154. Here's number three.

  1155. We have absolute

  1156. security.

  1157. God has chosen

  1158. in the past

1159. keeps us in the present

  1160. and he'll get us

  1161. through to the end

  1162. and therefore it

  1163. frees us to live

  1164. risky, bold,

  1165. outrageous,

  1166. radical lives

  1167. for him.

  1168. To go out there

  1169. and be the sons

  1170. that he's called us

  1171. to be

  1172. to put his character

  1173. on full display

  1174. to the world.

  1175. To be gracious

  1176. and loving.

  1177. To disclose the plan

  1178. of God

  1179. to anyone

  1180. we come into contact

  1181. with.

  1182. Because we're free.

  1183. Finally and fully free.

1184. Free to be the people

1185. that God has called us

  1186. to be.

  1187. Living life

  1188. in the light

  1189. of these spiritual

  1190. blessings.

  1191. And therefore I think

  1192. we can simply say

  1193. with Paul.

1194. Praise be to the God

  1195. and Father

1196. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1197. who has blessed

  1198. each of us

  1199. in the heavenly realms

  1200. with every

  1201. spiritual blessing.

  1202. Let's pray.

  1203. Father God

  1204. you have been so

  1205. kind to us.

  1206. You've been so

  1207. good to us.

  1208. Father you've loved us

  1209. even though we were

  1210. unlovable.

  1211. You chose us

1212. even though no one else

  1213. would ever choose us.

  1214. Because you love us

  1215. that much.

  1216. Therefore Lord

  1217. may this love

  1218. be at work

  1219. in our lives.

  1236. afresh today

  1237. that we are free

  1238. to be yours.
