  1. Please do have a seat. It's great to be here this morning. I hope you've had a great weekend.

  2. But let's just, before we turn to God's Word, let's just have a moment of silence.

  3. Let's just still our hearts and let's pray together.

  4. Gracious God and loving Heavenly Father, we praise you this morning, Lord, like we've sung.

  5. You're an awesome God.

  6. That your mercies are new to us each and every morning.

  7. And that your grace is truly sufficient for us.

  8. Lord, we come to your Word this morning desperate to hear from you.

  9. So, Father, we ask that you would send your Spirit, that he would lead us into all truth.

  10. He would be our teacher. He would be our guide.

  11. And, Father, as we look at this wonderful picture of grace, that it wouldn't just be a word that we sing.

  12. But, Father, it would be a reality and a truth that we experience.

  13. So, Father, I pray that we would leave here this morning with a bigger picture of who you are.

  14. And this is our prayer in Jesus' name. Amen.

  15. One of the television programs that Alex and I have got into recently is The Voice.

  16. I don't know if anyone else watches The Voice.

  17. Have we got any other voice freaks here?

  18. It's basically a music talent show on the BBC.

  19. Now, I don't normally go for stuff like that.

  20. It's not really my thing.

  21. But, see, when you're up with a child at five in the morning changing nappies,

  22. honestly, anything on the iPlayer will do.

  23. So, loving watching The Voice at the minute.

  24. And the way it works, for those of you who don't know, it's a singing competition.

  25. Contestant comes on the stage and really belts it out for two minutes, any song that they want to sing.

  26. And there's four judges.

  27. And as you've seen the picture there, they've got the backs to the contestant.

  28. And the whole aim of the game is for the contestant to convince the judges that they're good enough,

  29. that their voice is worth it.

  30. And then they hit the buzzer if they're good enough.

  31. And they turn around, they face the contestant, and they point at them, and they say,

  32. I want you in my team.

  33. It's a great show.

  34. It's a great idea.

  35. I was watching this the other morning,

  36. and it struck me.

  37. You know, I wonder for how many of us,

  38. actually that is what we think it is to be a Christian.

  39. You know, maybe that you're here this morning,

  40. you wouldn't describe yourself as a Christian,

  41. and you feel like you're performing for God.

  42. You're trying to live a good life, a moral life,

  43. but deep down you know,

  44. you think,

  45. you're never going to be good enough for it.

  46. Or perhaps that the problem isn't with you,

  47. actually the problem is with the judge,

  48. it's with God.

  49. To you, he seems like he's got his back to you.

  50. You think he doesn't care,

  51. you think he doesn't know you.

  52. And he comes across as harsh

  53. and faceless.

  54. Or maybe you're here and,

  55. actually you would describe yourself as a Christian,

  56. but if somebody asked you to articulate

  57. how you became a Christian,

  58. it would be along the lines of,

  59. actually I was good enough for God.

  60. And maybe you wouldn't articulate it like that,

  61. you know that you're saved by grace,

  62. but actually you're living your Christian life

  63. as if that's true.

  64. And you need to keep performing

  65. to earn God's favor.

  66. Now I think every single one of us in this room

  67. is in one of those four categories.

  68. And this is why it's so exciting

  69. to preach this this morning,

  70. because this passage speaks massively

  71. into each of them.

  72. So this is the great chapter in the Bible

  73. about Christian salvation.

  74. Effectively, it's going to tell us three things.

  75. Firstly, it's going to give us a reality check

  76. on where mankind stands before God

  77. in his own right.

  78. It's going to tell us what God has done about it.

  79. And in light of that,

  80. it's going to tell us how we should respond.

  81. So turn in your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  82. We're in at the first 10 verses this morning.

  83. It's imperative that we have God's word open to us there.

  84. If you've got a Bible in front of you,

  85. can I encourage you to open it?

  86. Just, if anything else, you can check this.

  87. It's not something I'm making up.

  88. This is actually what it says.

  89. And as you're turning there,

  90. let me give you a quick 101

  91. on what we've seen in Ephesians so far.

  92. Remember, this isn't a theology pamphlet.

  93. This is a real letter,

  94. written by a real person,

  95. written to real Christians,

  96. who've got real struggles.

  97. And Paul's rocked up in Ephesus,

  98. and he's declared,

  99. in this city where the goddess Artemis is worshipped,

  100. that a God that you can make with your own hands

  101. is no God at all.

  102. Now this is effectively like someone

  103. turning up to Paris,

  104. walking right underneath the Eiffel Tower

  105. and declaring that the Eiffel Tower is a fraud.

  106. It's not going to go well for that guy.

  107. But this is what Paul's done,

  108. and he's been aggressively forced out of this city.

  109. But here's the thing.

  110. These Christians remain.

  111. These Christians remain living in this hostile,

  112. pluralistic, dangerous,

  113. spiritualistic, occultic, paganistic world.

  114. A world that's not too dissimilar from ours.

  115. And he's writing to give them confidence

  116. in the incomparable power of God.

  117. And that's what we saw last week.

  118. Paul's been saying this,

  119. that there is no greater power

  120. than God against all the odds,

  121. raising Jesus from the dead

  122. and seating him above all powers

  123. and rulers and authorities.

  124. And this is what he's going to say this week.

  125. That same power,

  126. the resurrection power that God worked in Jesus,

  127. if you're a Christian,

  128. you've experienced it in your own life as well.

  129. Big idea this morning,

  130. to be a Christian is to be a living miracle.

  131. And grace,

  132. as we've been singing,

  133. as we've been looking at so far,

  134. grace is the banner that flies right across this section.

  135. Now, I love a sporting cliche.

  136. If you were watching rugby yesterday,

  137. incredible by the way,

  138. watching rugby yesterday,

  139. full of sporting cliches.

  140. My favourite,

  141. game of two halves.

  142. This section,

  143. is a game of two lives.

  144. And he's going to contrast the walk of death,

  145. and he's going to contrast the walk of life.

  146. So let's read about this,

  147. the walk of death.

  148. This is verses 1 to 3,

  149. Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  150. Paul writes this,

  151. As for you,

  152. you were dead

  153. in your transgressions and sins,

  154. in which you used to live

  155. when you followed the ways of this world,

  156. and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,

  157. the spirit who is now at work

  158. in those who are disobedient.

  159. All of us

  160. also lived among them at one time,

  161. gratifying

  162. the cravings of our flesh,

  163. and following its desires and thoughts.

  164. Like the rest,

  165. we were by nature

  166. deserving

  167. of wrath.

  168. Now, Paul uses that word once,

  169. two times in these verses.

  170. So this is what he's saying

  171. to these Ephesian Christians.

  172. This is what your life was like

  173. before God got involved.

  174. You were dead.

  175. That's really strong language.

  176. Certainly comes across at that to us,

  177. doesn't it?

  178. Especially,

  179. since these guys are physically

  180. alive and kicking.

  181. So what's Paul on about?

  182. Well, he's saying that

  183. out with Jesus Christ,

  184. you're separated from God,

  185. you're spiritually dead.

  186. This is how the Bible says it is.

  187. If you want a life of fulfillment,

  188. of purpose,

  189. of meaning,

  190. and of lasting joy,

  191. then you're only really going to get that

  192. in a relationship

  193. with the God who created you.

  194. And to be outside

  195. of that relationship,

  196. to be separated from him,

  197. is to be spiritually dead.

  198. That's the diagnosis here

  199. from Dr. Paul.

  200. And he's going to write,

  201. this death shows itself

  202. in two ways.

  203. Firstly,

  204. you were enslaved.

  205. Verse 2.

  206. I was driving our car

  207. on the M8

  208. a few weeks ago

  209. going to Glasgow.

  210. And I noticed

  211. that our car

  212. massively started

  213. veering to the left.

  214. So much so

  215. that I had to oversteer

  216. to the right

  217. just to make it go

  218. in a straight line.

  219. So I got back to Edinburgh,

  220. phoned up the garage,

  221. said I've got a problem

  222. with the car.

  223. They took a look at it.

  224. They phoned me

  225. the next afternoon

  226. and they said,

  227. Sir,

  228. your wheel alignment

  229. massively out.

  230. Now we live in that area

  231. of the city

  232. where there's lots

  233. of cobbled streets

  234. and the cobbled streets

  235. had knocked

  236. the car's alignment

  237. completely out.

  238. So instead of going

  239. in a straight line

  240. like it was designed to,

  241. actually this thing

  242. was veering all over the place.

  243. And unless we did

  244. something about it,

  245. if we left it

  246. to its own devices,

  247. it's going to veer.

  248. And it's going to crash.

  249. And that's what Paul

  250. is saying is true

  251. of these Christians

  252. outside of Christ.

  253. He uses a shipping metaphor.

  254. Remember,

  255. he's writing to Ephesus.

  256. It's a port city.

  257. They understand

  258. what it means

  259. to have a course.

  260. That's what he's saying

  261. as a result

  262. of sin messing up

  263. the alignment

  264. in your hearts.

  265. You're just following

  266. the default nature

  267. of your sick,

  268. human heart

  269. and you're just following

  270. the course of the world.

  271. He uses that word

  272. following three times

  273. in this section,

  274. doesn't he?

  275. You're following three things.

  276. He says you're following

  277. the flesh,

  278. you're following the world,

  279. you're following the devil.

  280. You're just behaving

  281. like everyone else.

  282. That's how he used to behave.

  283. You lived with the same

  284. priorities,

  285. you lived with the same

  286. dreams and hopes

  287. and ambitions.

  288. That's how he used to live.

  289. You know,

  290. John Stott

  291. says it so beautifully.

  292. He says that it's only

  293. dead fish that

  294. go over the stream.

  295. That's what you once were,

  296. says Paul.

  297. You were

  298. enslaved.

  299. And secondly,

  300. as well as being enslaved,

  301. you were condemned.

  302. Look at what he says

  303. in verse three.

  304. You stood guilty

  305. before a

  306. holy God.

  307. So this is because

  308. of their willful

  309. disobedience against him.

  310. They stood at odds

  311. with God.

  312. And they are in the

  313. firing line for his

  314. holy anger,

  315. his wrath.

  316. That implies,

  317. doesn't it,

  318. that there is,

  319. regardless of what

  320. our world tells us,

  321. there is an absolute

  322. standard of truth

  323. by which we will

  324. all be judged.

  325. And it's God's

  326. standard,

  327. his perfect standard,

  328. which we have fallen

  329. well short of.

  330. Our world would tell us

  331. that we're inherently good.

  332. Paul would say,

  333. you're being far

  334. too optimistic.

  335. You were enslaved

  336. and you were condemned.

  337. Outside of Christ,

  338. you were dead.

  339. And another program

  340. that I watched

  341. on the iPlayer,

  342. it's getting a lot

  343. of air time

  344. at the minute,

  345. J.K. Rowling's

  346. The Casual Vacancy.

  347. I don't know

  348. if anyone watched it.

  349. The only reason

  350. I watched it

  351. is because I read

  352. something that told me

  353. it was a bit

  354. controversial.

  355. And the reason

  356. it was controversial

  357. is because the BBC

  358. make of the book,

  359. the BBC changed

  360. the ending.

  361. I don't know

  362. if anyone noticed

  363. that,

  364. if anyone actually

  365. stomached it to the end,

  366. I made it to halfway

  367. through episode one.

  368. But the BBC changed

  369. the ending from the book.

  370. So in the book,

  371. it ends on a really

  372. desperate note.

  373. Whereas the BBC drama

  374. ended on a really

  375. positive note.

  376. In the book,

  377. the villain

  378. at the end

  379. is exposed.

  380. In the BBC drama,

  381. actually the villain

  382. ends up being

  383. the good guy.

  384. Now why did they

  385. change it?

  386. That's the question.

  387. Well the reason

  388. they changed it

  389. was because of

  390. when it was being

  391. shown.

  392. On a Sunday

  393. evening.

  394. Now I well remember

  395. that feeling on the

  396. Sunday evening

  397. before working

  398. the Monday.

  399. And that's why

  400. they changed it.

  401. Nobody wants to

  402. see tragic TV.

  403. People want to

  404. see feel good TV.

  405. People want to

  406. feel great as they

  407. go to bed on a

  408. Sunday night.

  409. And that's why

  410. they changed it.

  411. And I think the

  412. temptation for all

  413. of us as we read

  414. these first three

  415. verses here is to

  416. give it a rewrite.

  417. Is it not?

  418. Surely we weren't

  419. that bad.

  420. Surely we,

  421. that is just

  422. Paul's opinion.

  423. That's not really

  424. what's happening.

  425. But actually it's

  426. true.

  427. And what Paul

  428. outlines here is

  429. the staggering

  430. reality of what a

  431. life lived outside

  432. of Jesus Christ

  433. looks like.

  434. Now if that's you

  435. this morning then

  436. can I just point

  437. out to you where

  438. your life is

  439. heading?

  440. What's going on?

  441. You know Sinclair

  442. Ferguson would

  443. write that the

  444. gospel sobers us

  445. before it satisfies

  446. us.

  447. I have a good

  448. friend of mine who

  449. I met up with this

  450. week.

  451. He's a pastor down

  452. in Leith.

  453. And he was telling

  454. me, and the church

  455. plant there has been

  456. going for two,

  457. three years, and he

  458. was telling me that

  459. there's a woman who's

  460. been going for that

  461. whole time.

  462. Not interested in

  463. any of this God

  464. stuff.

  465. And actually she

  466. was converted a few

  467. weeks ago through

  468. these verses.

  469. That actually it

  470. made sense to her

  471. because she couldn't

  472. figure out why she

  473. kept going back to

  474. church week on week.

  475. She couldn't fathom

  476. why she suddenly took

  477. a notion to read

  478. the Bible.

  479. She couldn't

  480. understand why she

  481. liked hanging out

  482. with Christian people

  483. because this detested

  484. her.

  485. And then it

  486. clicked.

  487. She realized that

  488. God was pursuing

  489. her by his

  490. spirit.

  491. That God is into

  492. making dead people

  493. alive.

  494. If you don't believe

  495. that, come back a few

  496. weeks time for Easter.

  497. We go big on it.

  498. It's kind of what it's

  499. all about.

  500. And she realized that

  501. God was pursuing her.

  502. And she gave her life

  503. to Jesus.

  504. I wonder if that's

  505. something that's true

  506. for some people in

  507. here this morning.

  508. Actually, you don't

  509. really know why you

  510. come to church.

  511. You don't really know

  512. why you like singing

  513. these songs.

  514. You don't really know

  515. why you kind of read

  516. the Bible.

  517. Well, guys, can I say,

  518. could it be that God

  519. is pursuing you by

  520. his spirit?

  521. Could this stuff be

  522. beginning to make

  523. sense because God is

  524. at work in your life

  525. transforming you?

  526. Have a think about

  527. that.

  528. But you were dead,

  529. writes Paul.

  530. Here is mankind shown

  531. to be totally inadequate

  532. to save themselves

  533. apart from God's

  534. intervening grace.

  535. Dead.

  536. You know the thing

  537. about dead people?

  538. They can't make

  539. themselves alive.

  540. This isn't like

  541. Sherlock where he

  542. puts the squash ball

  543. under his arm,

  544. he stops the pulse,

  545. he's declared dead,

  546. but he's not actually

  547. dead.

  548. Okay, this isn't like

  549. your first aid certificate.

  550. I don't care what

  551. qualification you have,

  552. you cannot revive

  553. a dead person.

  554. Okay, no kind of

  555. Heinleck maneuver

  556. in one, two, three

  557. is going to resuscitate

  558. a dead person.

  559. A dead person's

  560. only hope,

  561. resurrection.

  562. Only hope.

  563. Now that is pretty

  564. bleak reading as we

  565. move on to our

  566. next section.

  567. The walk of darkness.

  568. And it leads us to

  569. ask the question,

  570. is that it?

  571. What's going to

  572. happen next?

  573. Well, this is where

  574. I want you to think

  575. of the first school

  576. disco that you

  577. ever went to.

  578. Okay, do you

  579. remember that?

  580. Boys, you maybe

  581. put on a bit of

  582. your dad's Paco

  583. Rabanne,

  584. a bit of

  585. bro cream in the

  586. hair.

  587. Girls, you maybe

  588. borrowed your

  589. sister's lipstick

  590. for the evening,

  591. and you went to

  592. the village hall,

  593. and you went into

  594. the village hall,

  595. only to be greeted

  596. with the great

  597. divide.

  598. Yeah?

  599. Boys on this

  600. side of the hall,

  601. playing keepy-ups

  602. with balloons,

  603. if you were me,

  604. and girls on this

  605. side of the hall.

  606. And there was a

  607. massive separation.

  608. And the tension,

  609. you could feel it,

  610. it was palpable

  611. in the room.

  612. The tension was,

  613. the question was,

  614. who's going to

  615. make the first move?

  616. Who is going to

  617. make the first move?

  618. And as we leave

  619. verse 3,

  620. that is the

  621. question that's

  622. there.

  623. Who is going to

  624. make the first move?

  625. Our sin has

  626. separated us from

  627. God.

  628. There's a massive

  629. chasm there.

  630. So who's going to

  631. make the first move

  632. towards reconciliation?

  633. Well, we've just

  634. seen, haven't we,

  635. quite categorically,

  636. it wasn't us.

  637. It couldn't have

  638. been us.

  639. We were dead.

  640. It's not like we

  641. were crying out in

  642. God's direction for

  643. forgiveness.

  644. We weren't trying to

  645. make ourselves look

  646. pretty before God.

  647. In fact, the

  648. opposite is true.

  649. that we were

  650. shoving God's

  651. kindness back in

  652. his face.

  653. We wanted nothing

  654. to do with him.

  655. We preferred the

  656. darkness.

  657. So who's going to

  658. make this first move

  659. towards reconciliation?

  660. Who's going to

  661. make the first move

  662. to bring people

  663. back to God?

  664. Well, this is where

  665. Paul pens two of

  666. the most beautiful

  667. words that you'll

  668. find anywhere in

  669. Scripture.

  670. If you've got an

  671. ESV, it just

  672. reads, but God.

  673. But God.

  674. The two words on

  675. which the whole

  676. future of the

  677. human race rests.

  678. And it hits you,

  679. doesn't it, given

  680. everything that's

  681. gone on before?

  682. We were dead in

  683. our transgressions

  684. and sins, but

  685. God.

  686. We were enslaved,

  687. but God.

  688. We were condemned,

  689. but God.

  690. Do you see how

  691. that works?

  692. That God is the

  693. one who makes the

  694. first move towards

  695. reconciliation.

  696. Praise God that

  697. it's him who

  698. steps forward in

  699. grace and it's

  700. him that comes

  701. down to us.

  702. You know, when we

  703. weren't looking for

  704. him, he came

  705. looking for us.

  706. This is what it's

  707. telling us.

  708. That God is the

  709. loving pursuer.

  710. That God is the

  711. gracious initiator.

  712. And God is the

  713. one who changes

  714. absolutely everything

  715. but God.

  716. You know, let's

  717. read verses 4 to

  718. 10 and we'll see

  719. how this works.

  720. Paul writes this,

  721. God.

  722. But because of his

  723. great love for us,

  724. God, who is rich in

  725. mercy, made us alive

  726. with Christ even

  727. when we were dead

  728. in transgressions.

  729. It is by grace you

  730. have been saved.

  731. And God raised us up

  732. with Christ and seated

  733. us with him in the

  734. heavenly realms in

  735. Christ Jesus in order

  736. that in the coming

  737. ages he might show

  738. the incomparable

  739. riches of his

  740. grace expressed in

  741. his kindness to us

  742. in Christ Jesus.

  743. For it is by grace

  744. you have been saved

  745. through faith and

  746. this is not from

  747. yourselves, it is the

  748. gift of God.

  749. Not by works so that

  750. no one can boast.

  751. For we are God's

  752. handiwork created in

  753. Christ Jesus to do

  754. good works which God

  755. prepared in advance for

  756. us to do.

  757. So what has God done?

  758. See verse 6.

  759. God has done in our

  760. lives exactly what he

  761. did to Jesus back in

  762. chapter 1 and verse

  763. 18.

  764. Have a little look at

  765. it there.

  766. God made Jesus alive,

  767. he makes us alive.

  768. He seated Jesus in

  769. the heavenly realms and

  770. he seats us with Jesus

  771. in the heavenly realms.

  772. God's power raises

  773. Jesus from the grave and

  774. the same power raises

  775. us from the spiritual

  776. grave.

  777. We were dead, God has

  778. made us alive.

  779. We were condemned, now

  780. God has saved us.

  781. We were enslaved to the

  782. flesh, now God has

  783. freed us from its grip

  784. and he's seated us, us

  785. with Christ above every

  786. rule and authority and

  787. power.

  788. What's the point,

  789. caller?

  790. We share in Christ's

  791. victory.

  792. If we are in Christ, we

  793. share in his victory.

  794. And this is something I

  795. noticed this week.

  796. Notice that it's in the

  797. plural all the way there.

  798. It's us.

  799. So Paul's including

  800. himself in this.

  801. It's us.

  802. And I think something that

  803. hit me this week, this

  804. has implications for the

  805. way that we deal with

  806. one another.

  807. You know, I caught

  808. myself this week, every

  809. time that I was tempted

  810. to gossip about

  811. something, every time I

  812. was tempted to speak

  813. badly of someone, every

  814. time I was tempted to

  815. belittle someone.

  816. And guys, listen, I still

  817. struggle with that.

  818. Don't think that just

  819. because I'm standing up

  820. here makes me immune from

  821. those struggles.

  822. But I'd reminded myself

  823. that that person that I

  824. was thinking about,

  825. actually somebody that

  826. God's raised from the

  827. world.

  828. God has put his spirit in

  829. that person.

  830. So who on earth am I to

  831. belittle them?

  832. To gossip about them.

  833. To try and put them

  834. down.

  835. Do you see how that has

  836. implications for us in

  837. this room?

  838. Have a think about that.

  839. The next time you're

  840. tempted to do something

  841. about that, actually

  842. that's the reality of

  843. what you're doing.

  844. He has seated us with

  845. Christ.

  846. You know, there's that

  847. famous quote from C.S.

  848. Lewis.

  849. An inquirer came up to

  850. him and he asked him to

  851. summarize the difference

  852. between Christianity and

  853. every other religion in

  854. the world.

  855. Maybe it's a question

  856. that you've got this

  857. morning.

  858. And Lewis said it's

  859. simple really.

  860. It's the difference

  861. between do and done.

  862. All the other religions

  863. in the world, it's about

  864. making your way up to

  865. God by your good works.

  866. But somehow we can make

  867. our way up the ladder

  868. to God.

  869. I hope, if anything,

  870. you've seen the futility

  871. of that in these verses

  872. this morning.

  873. But Christianity is not

  874. about us going up the

  875. ladder to God.

  876. Actually, it's about God

  877. coming down the ladder

  878. to us.

  879. Our salvation is based

  880. on what Jesus has done

  881. for us.

  882. His atoning work on the

  883. cross is he takes our

  884. filth, the death that we

  885. deserve to die, and he

  886. gives us his righteousness.

  887. It is not in what we can

  888. do for ourselves.

  889. What has God done?

  890. He's saved us by his

  891. grace.

  892. Friends, this should

  893. humble us.

  894. Do you see how we can

  895. take absolutely no credit

  896. for our salvation?

  897. That we absolutely have no

  898. boast about the fact that

  899. we're Christians.

  900. It wasn't like we performed

  901. well enough for God to be

  902. impressed by us, and he

  903. chose us.

  904. Do you see how God gets

  905. all the credit here?

  906. It should humble us, and

  907. it should also cause to

  908. dwell up within us a deep,

  909. deep gratitude, a heart of

  910. thankfulness.

  911. It's a wow factor that

  912. Paul's going for here, that

  913. God saved us, us.

  914. Wow.

  915. And do you see as well how

  916. this massively takes the

  917. pressure off?

  918. We're free to take off our

  919. masks and stop pretending

  920. that we're perfect people.

  921. Two reasons for that.

  922. First of all, because we're

  923. not.

  924. And second of all, if you

  925. think about it, doesn't it

  926. rob Jesus of his glory?

  927. You know, actually, if we've

  928. added something to our

  929. salvation, if we added 5% and

  930. God was 95%, then actually we

  931. can take some credit for the

  932. fact that we're Christians.

  933. But if we take off the mask

  934. and we say, actually, amazing

  935. grace saved the rich like me.

  936. Do you see how God gets all the

  937. glory of that?

  938. That Jesus has glorified, not

  939. me.

  940. There's something practical I've

  941. tried to do this week every

  942. time I've come to pray, is I've

  943. just simply gone, but God.

  944. But God.

  945. You can do it, but God.

  946. I don't know how you pray, but

  947. you can do that.

  948. Just reminding ourselves of what

  949. God has accomplished for us, all

  950. by grace.

  951. Why has God done this?

  952. Because he's a loving, heavenly

  953. father.

  954. Do you see how that works?

  955. Verse 4, the adjectives that

  956. Paul uses.

  957. What's driving this whole

  958. salvation venture is the great

  959. love that God has for us.

  960. You know, I used to think of God

  961. a bit like the, I'm quite into

  962. football, you may have guessed

  963. that.

  964. I used to think of God like the

  965. football referee.

  966. Actually, he's there just to spoil

  967. my fun and he's just there to

  968. keep the score.

  969. He is somebody to be

  970. begrudgingly obeyed, certainly

  971. not enjoyed.

  972. Maybe that's your opinion of

  973. God this morning.

  974. Well, can I ask you, is this the

  975. God that you see Paul describing

  976. here?

  977. God's rich in mercy.

  978. God's rich in grace.

  979. Why does he love us?

  980. He loves us because he loves us

  981. because he loves us.

  982. Actually, do you see how he's not

  983. the referee?

  984. He's the one who steps in off the

  985. sidelines and gets involved in my

  986. mess, gets his hands dirty to save

  987. me.

  988. You know, Rico Tice in the

  989. Christianity Explored course, he

  990. puts it like this.

  991. You are more sinful than you ever

  992. realized, but you are more loved

  993. than you ever dreamed.

  994. But you see, there's another reason

  995. that God saves us.

  996. And I wonder if you remember doing

  997. show and tell at school.

  998. I certainly do.

  999. Maybe you brought in your pet

  1000. budgie.

1001. Maybe it was your ninja turtle

  1002. figurine.

1003. Show and tell at school.

1004. Something that you were proud of

1005. that you wanted to show the rest of

1006. the class and tell them the story

  1007. behind it.

1008. Well, these verses tell us that God's

1009. doing a show and tell with his

  1010. church of the world.

1011. Every single person that God has

1012. saved is a trophy of his amazing

  1013. grace.

  1014. I don't know if you've ever thought

1015. about that, that God's intention for

1016. Brunsfield Evangelical Church is that

1017. he can showcase his incredible grace

  1018. to the world.

1019. As he does a resurrection job on dead

  1020. people.

1021. As he forgives and transforms outrageous

  1022. sinners like us.

1023. As people see that, his grace shines

  1024. forth.

1025. Maybe you're here this morning and like

  1026. Paul alluded to earlier.

1027. We didn't even talk about this

1028. beforehand so it must be something in it.

1029. If you have a hard time believing

  1030. that God loves you.

1031. If you have a hard time believing that

1032. grace really is sufficient for you.

1033. Well, can I ask you from this passage

  1034. to look around.

  1035. You can do it.

  1036. Move your neck.

  1037. Look around.

1038. This is a community of grace.

  1039. None of us

  1040. have earned

1041. our right in God's kingdom.

  1042. This is all grace.

1043. And this is a place where it's okay

  1044. not to be okay.

  1045. Grace.

1046. If you don't believe me, listen to Mumford

  1047. and Sons.

1048. They put it like this.

1049. It seems that all my bridges have been

  1050. burnt.

  1051. But you say

1052. that's exactly how this grace thing works.

1053. It's not the long walk home

1054. that will change this heart.

1055. But the welcome I receive

  1056. with the restart.

  1057. Amazing grace.

1058. What should be our response?

1059. We'll see that God saves

  1060. every Christian

1061. in order that they might do good works.

1062. Saves them so that they can do good works.

1063. So important we get that order right.

1064. I hope you've enjoyed the Exodus series

1065. that we've been going through

  1066. the last few mornings.

1067. Taking a little break from it for a while.

1068. We'll go back to it in a few weeks.

  1069. And we'll see them

  1070. being given the law

  1071. by God.

  1072. So this is what

  1073. is happening here.

  1074. God saved them

  1075. and he's saying

1076. because you're my holy people

1077. this is how I want you to live.

1078. And notice that it's not

  1079. the other way around.

  1080. It's not that

  1081. you

  1082. obeyed me.

1083. You lived up to my standards.

  1084. Therefore

  1085. I think you're worthy enough

  1086. to be saved.

  1087. No, no, no.

  1088. It's grace.

1089. And it's the same for us.

  1090. God saved us

  1091. and he says

  1092. live for me.

1093. This is how I want you to live.

1094. And do you see how it's a

  1095. worshipful response?

  1096. We are

  1097. God's workmanship

  1098. at verse 10

  1099. created in Jesus

  1100. for good works.

1101. Good works that you'll notice

  1102. that God has prepared

1103. beforehand for us to do.

1104. So these works that we're doing

1105. we can't even take the credit

  1106. for them

  1107. because it's God

  1108. that's prepared them

  1109. for us to do.

  1110. You know,

1111. I know a lot of you here

  1112. are in that transition

  1113. stage of life.

  1114. You know,

  1115. maybe you're a graduate.

  1116. Maybe you're leaving uni

  1117. this summer.

  1118. You're going somewhere else.

1119. Maybe your job's finishing up

1120. and you're about to move on

  1121. from this city.

  1122. Well,

  1123. can I

  1124. encourage you to see

  1125. the wonderful promise

  1126. here at verse 10?

1127. That whatever you go on

  1128. to do

  1129. you can walk sure

  1130. knowing that God

  1131. has gone before you

  1132. and that

  1133. no matter what you

  1134. encounter there

1135. he has got good works

  1136. for you to do

  1137. in that new situation.

  1138. He knows what you're

  1139. going to face.

  1140. He's prepared works

  1141. for you to do

1142. and you can trust him.

  1143. So sovereign and gracious

  1144. is God's

  1145. that he's

  1146. prepared good works

  1147. for us to do.

  1148. I find that incredible

  1149. and I find that

  1150. amazingly humbling.

  1151. So do you see

  1152. the contrast in walk

1153. as we bring this thing

  1154. to a close?

  1155. Verse 2

  1156. we're walking in darkness

  1157. without a hope.

  1158. Verse 9 and 10

  1159. we're walking in grace.

  1160. We're walking in

  1161. good works.

  1162. What an amazing God

  1163. we serve.

  1164. What an amazing God

  1165. that we know.

  1166. Now let's finish

  1167. by going back

  1168. to the voice.

  1169. Is the voice

  1170. theologically sound?

  1171. That's our question.

  1172. Well what picture

  1173. is Paul painted

  1174. in Ephesians here?

  1175. Can we do anything

  1176. to earn our way

  1177. onto God's team?

1178. Is God the harsh judge

  1179. who's got his back

  1180. to us?

1181. Did we earn our way

  1182. onto his team

  1183. by performing

  1184. well enough?

  1185. And are we

  1186. outwith God's

  1187. love

  1188. and grace?

  1189. No, no,

  1190. no, no.

  1191. Do you see

  1192. this picture

  1193. in Ephesians 2?

  1194. Do you see

  1195. how we're the contestant

1196. that's dead on the floor?

  1197. Do you see

1198. how God is the one

  1199. who turns towards us

  1200. in grace?

  1201. Do you see

1202. how God is the one

  1203. who breathes

  1204. new life into us?

  1205. And do you see

1206. how God is the one

  1207. who tells us

1208. for the rest of our days

  1209. to sing a song

  1210. of worship to him

  1211. telling the world

  1212. how incredible

  1213. his grace is?

1214. This is our great God.

  1215. You know,

  1216. one of the songs

  1217. I've been listening to

  1218. in preparation for this,

  1219. I don't know if that's

  1220. too small to read.

  1221. If it's not,

1222. I'm going to read it out.

  1223. It's called

  1224. Grace Unmeasured.

  1225. It's a sovereign grace song

1226. that we used to sing,

  1227. Alex and I,

  1228. at our church

  1229. back in Bristol.

  1230. And I've been listening

  1231. to it this week

  1232. and I just think

  1233. it's so poignant.

1234. Let me read it to you

  1235. as we close.

  1236. Grace Unmeasured,

  1237. vast and free,

  1238. that knew me

  1239. from eternity,

  1240. that called me out

  1241. before my birth

  1242. to bring you glory

  1243. on this earth.

  1244. Grace amazing,

  1245. pure and deep,

  1246. that saw me

  1247. in my misery,

  1248. that took my curse

  1249. and owned my blame

  1250. so I could bear

  1251. your righteous name.

  1252. Grace abounding,

  1253. strong and true,

  1254. that makes me long

  1255. to be like you,

  1256. that turns me

  1257. from my selfish pride

  1258. to love the cross

  1259. on which you died.

  1260. Grace unending

  1261. all my days,

  1262. you'll give me strength

  1263. to run this race.

  1264. And when my years

  1265. on earth are through,

  1266. the praise will all

  1267. belong to you.

  1268. Let's pray together

  1269. as we close.

  1270. Amen.

  1271. Amen.

  1272. Father God,

  1273. we worship you,

  1274. Lord,

  1275. for your outrageous grace.

1276. Thank you that you are

1277. the God of all grace.

1278. You have shown us favor,

  1279. Father,

  1280. sinful and disobedient

  1281. people like us.

  1282. Lord,

1283. I pray for us this week

1284. that you would help us

  1285. grasp grace more.

1286. I pray that you would

1287. help us love grace more.

1288. And I pray that you would

  1289. transform our lives

  1290. by grace

  1291. more and more

  1292. into the image

  1293. of your Son,

  1294. Jesus Christ,

1295. in whose name we pray.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.
