  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. So it's a pleasure to be here with you again at Brentsfield.

  3. I normally get invited twice to most churches, the second time once to apologise, but I keep

  4. getting back invited.

  5. So it is a pleasure, but it's also a privilege and a responsibility to share God's Word with

  6. you.

  7. So will you join me as we just pray and ask God to help us to understand it, and more

  8. importantly to put it into practice.

  9. So let's just bow in a moment's prayer.

  10. Gracious God, as we focus on the greatness of the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ,

  11. we pray that by your Holy Spirit you might make it clear to us the greatness of your love

  12. and grace, and that we might respond with hearts full of thanksgiving, and if we've never

  13. before grasped it for ourselves, that you might help us to do that also, that we might know

  14. what it is to be born again of the Spirit of God.

  15. And we ask it in Jesus' name of your glory.

  16. Amen.

  17. A few outlines on the screen, hopefully, that will help you to follow.

  18. I discover in preaching, as most of you know now, since I stepped down from Charlotte Chapel

  19. in 2009, I spent most of my time listening to sermons instead of preaching them.

  20. In fact, I don't exaggerate, in the last five years I've probably listened to hundreds of

  21. sermons, and it's a great privilege and also a great responsibility.

  22. And some people like PowerPoint, other people can't stand it, so if you can't stand it, don't

  23. look at it, alright?

  24. If you do find it helpful, then just follow along, okay?

  25. So, as many of you will know, at midnight last Sunday, April the 5th, some sweeping changes

  26. came into place to allow people over the age of 55 to access all their pension funds without

  27. limit.

  28. This is great news if you're over 55.

  29. And I should say, by the way, that if you see me in the future driving around a Ferrari

  30. instead of my Ford Focus, you'll know the reason why.

  31. This plan was a closely guarded secret.

  32. And it caught everyone by surprise when George Osborne, the Chancellor, announced it a year

  33. ago in his budget.

  34. Now, important though this is, for those who qualify, I want to say this morning, it is

  35. nothing.

  36. This plan pales into insignificance in comparison with a wonderful plan which is described in

  37. this next section of this letter written to Christians in the Greek city of Ephesus by

  38. the Apostle Paul, which you've been studying, I understand, over the past few weeks.

  39. In the new international, in the new, new international version of the Bible, this is the 1988 version,

  40. and it's pretty much the same as the new one which came out in 2011.

  41. That's about 6% of changes, nothing too substantial.

  42. But if you've got a Bible, you might want to turn to it, it's page 1174, or one of the Pew Bibles.

  43. The words will be on the screen, but in the new version, you'll see the Pew Bibles, the section

  44. beginning Ephesians 3, this is page 1174, 1174.

  45. All right, we'll help to have a Bible for other reasons in a moment.

  46. But in this version, this section is entitled, Pull the Preacher to the Gentiles.

  47. In the new version, I like the new heading.

  48. The new heading is, God's marvelous plan for the Gentiles.

  49. God's marvelous plan for the Gentiles.

  50. Now, when George gave his pension plan, you may have switched up.

  51. Those who switched off, those who was over 55 sat up and smiled.

  52. My pension advisor sent me an email and said,

  53. this is good news for you.

  54. I thank you very much.

  55. So when we read this, I simply want to say,

  56. this is good news for the over 55s here,

  57. but it's good news for the under 55s.

  58. In fact, it's good news, it says, for Gentiles.

  59. So if you're a Gentile, that is, you weren't born as a Jew,

  60. then pay attention because this is good news for you.

  61. And if you are a Jew, if you were born a Jew, a privileged position,

  62. then it also applies to you as well, as we'll see together.

  63. It's quite a complex passage, so let's read together.

  64. I've put it on the screen and let's read together.

  65. For this reason, I pull the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles.

  66. Surely you've heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you.

  67. That is the mystery made known to me by revelation,

  68. as I've already written briefly.

  69. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

  70. which was not made known to people in other generations,

  71. as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.

  72. This mystery is that through the gospel,

  73. the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel,

  74. members together of one body,

  75. and share us together in the promise of Christ.

  76. That's quite a tightly packed, complex passage,

  77. but it's a bit like,

  78. have you ever got a copy of your pension plan?

  79. All those legal details and everything.

  80. You need to study it carefully to work out what the details mean for you in reality.

  81. So, with God's help, I want to try and unpack this to help us to understand.

  82. And the first thing I want you to notice, here it is again,

  83. will you notice the key word in this section is the word mystery.

  84. It occurs three times.

  85. In fact, in the original text, it only occurs twice.

  86. The third time it's given to make it clear what it's talking about.

  87. Now, this letter was written to people living in the Greek city of Ephesus,

  88. and lo and behold, the people in the Greek city of Ephesus spoke Greek.

  89. Okay, everybody got that?

  90. Yep.

  91. And the Greeks had a word for mystery.

  92. And the Greek word for mystery is musterion,

  93. from which we get the English word mystery.

  94. In other words, our word mystery comes from the Greek word mystery,

  95. but it doesn't mean the same in English as it did in Greek.

  96. Okay, you still with me?

  97. Lod your heads, look intelligent.

  98. All right.

  99. Yeah, you all still there?

  100. Right.

  101. Okay.

  102. In English, in my dictionary,

  103. a mystery is defined as an unexplained

  104. or inexplicable event or phenomenon.

  105. But in Greek,

  106. a mystery,

  107. a musterion,

  108. in the Greek language,

  109. was a secret

  110. that had been revealed

  111. to someone.

  112. in ancient Greek,

  113. in ancient Greek,

  114. they actually had religions.

  115. They were called mystery religions.

  116. And they told people,

  117. if you paid enough

  118. or did all the right things,

  119. you got let in on the mystery,

  120. what the secret was,

  121. this wonderful divine secret

  122. that had been revealed.

  123. Now,

  124. Paul uses this word here

  125. to describe

  126. the Christian faith.

  127. And he says it's a mystery.

  128. That doesn't mean

  129. you can't understand it.

  130. It means

  131. it's truth from God

  132. that has been revealed.

  133. So,

  134. here's a title.

  135. It's not the greatest title,

  136. but I kind of like it.

  137. So,

  138. here we go.

  139. I'm going to call this

  140. The Marvelous Mystery.

  141. All right?

  142. The Marvelous Mystery.

  143. Now,

  144. if you've been following this series

  145. in Ephesians,

  146. you will know

  147. that Paul actually,

  148. in the opening section

  149. of his letter,

  150. after giving the greetings,

  151. he gives this fantastic

  152. hymn of praise.

  153. It lasts from

  154. chapter 1,

  155. verse,

  156. after the greeting,

  157. verses 1 and 2,

  158. from verse 3

  159. right through to verse 14.

  160. Greek is a funny language

  161. because it adds things together.

  162. So,

  163. from verse 3 to verse 14

  164. is all one sentence

  165. in Greek.

  166. It doesn't make any sense

  167. in English

  168. because you've lots of track

  169. by the time you get

  170. to the third line.

  171. It's such a wonderful thing.

  172. And in it,

  173. he introduces the theme

  174. of mystery.

  175. Listen carefully.

  176. Ephesians 1,

  177. 9 to 10.

  178. He says,

  179. And he,

  180. that is God,

  181. made known to us

  182. the mystery

  183. of his will

  184. according to his good pleasure

  185. which he purposed in Christ

  186. to be put into effect

  187. when the times

  188. will have reached

  189. their fulfillment

  190. to bring all things

  191. in heaven and earth

  192. together under one head,

  193. even Christ.

  194. One writer has compared

  195. that opening section

  196. with the overture

  197. before an opera.

  198. Have you ever been

  199. to an opera?

  200. Or you've listened

  201. to some great piece

  202. of music?

  203. What they do

  204. in the overture,

  205. they play all the basic themes

  206. very briefly

  207. and then as it develops,

  208. the music focuses

  209. on each of those themes

  210. in more detail.

  211. So here's Paul introducing

  212. mystery at this point

  213. in the opening chapter

  214. and then when he comes

  215. to chapter 3

  216. he says,

  217. This is the mystery

  218. known to me by Revelation,

  219. verse 3,

  220. as I've already written briefly.

  221. In other words,

  222. he said,

  223. I told you I was going

  224. to talk about it

  225. in the opening bit,

  226. now I've come to it

  227. in chapter 3.

  228. And he impacts it

  229. in detail.

  230. So let me give you

  231. an overview

  232. of where these six verses go

  233. and then we'll try

  234. and follow it together,

  235. okay?

  236. So in Ephesians 3,

  237. 1 to 6,

  238. in the first two verses

  239. he talks about,

  240. and I'll try and explain

  241. what this means,

  242. he talks about

  243. what he calls

  244. the administration

  245. of the mystery.

  246. Then in verses 3 to 5

  247. he talks about

  248. the revelation

  249. of the mystery.

  250. And then in the last bit,

  251. in verse 6,

  252. he talks about

  253. the description

  254. of the mystery.

  255. Now maybe for dramatic effect

  256. that we have to wait

  257. until verse 6

  258. to find out

  259. what the mystery actually is.

  260. So I think it makes

  261. more sense,

  262. I'm not rewriting Paul here

  263. just to make it intelligible,

  264. I think it makes more sense

  265. if we go backwards way around

  266. and start with the description,

  267. then the revelation,

  268. and then the administration.

  269. Okay?

  270. This is hard stuff,

  271. okay,

  272. so stay with me,

  273. alright,

  274. it's really important,

  275. alright?

  276. So let's start with

  277. the description,

  278. the mystery.

  279. What is the mystery?

  280. This mystery,

  281. he says,

  282. is that through the gospel,

  283. the Gentiles,

  284. the heirs together

  285. with Israel,

  286. members together

  287. of one body,

  288. and sharers together

  289. in the promise

  290. in Christ Jesus.

  291. Now I just read that

  292. and there was not

  293. a flicker of reaction

  294. from anybody here.

  295. If I had read this

  296. to first century Jews,

  297. there would have been

  298. a riot.

  299. In fact,

  300. we're going to look

  301. in a moment

  302. at a story

  303. that precipitated this

  304. that actually caused

  305. a riot.

  306. a riot.

  307. Why?

  308. Because of the feeling

  309. of absolute superiority

  310. that the Jewish people

  311. had towards anyone

  312. who wasn't Jewish,

  313. i.e.

  314. what we call a Gentile.

  315. Here's what William Barclay,

  316. a New Testament scholar,

  317. says.

  318. The Jews had an immense

  319. contempt for the Gentile.

  320. They said that Gentiles

  321. were created by God

  322. to be fuel

  323. for the fires of hell.

  324. that God left only Israel

  325. of all the nations

  326. he'd made,

  327. that the best of serpents

  328. crushed,

  329. the best of Gentiles

  330. killed.

  331. It was not lawful

  332. to render help

  333. to a Gentile woman

  334. in childbirth,

  335. for that would be

  336. to bring another Gentile

  337. into the world.

  338. The barrier between

  339. Jew and Gentile

  340. was absolute.

  341. If a Jew

  342. married a Gentile,

  343. the funeral of that Jew

  344. was carried out.

  345. Such contact

  346. with a Gentile

  347. was the equivalent

  348. of death

  349. even to go into

  350. a Gentile house

  351. rendered a Jew

  352. unclean.

  353. Now,

  354. here is this man

  355. writing this letter.

  356. His name is Paul.

  357. By background,

  358. he's a Jew

  359. and not just a Jew,

  360. he's a Jew

  361. from the strictest

  362. group of Jews

  363. called the Pharisees.

  364. He's a former member

  365. of the ruling council

  366. of the Jewish nation

  367. and he says,

  368. I've got a secret

  369. to share with the world.

  370. And the secret is this,

  371. Gentiles

  372. are on an equal footing

  373. with Jews.

  374. And he describes

  375. what this means.

  376. He kind of,

  377. if you like,

  378. this is the,

  379. keep going back

  380. to the pension,

  381. this is the pension portfolio.

  382. He unpacks

  383. what this means

  384. in detail.

  385. He uses three

  386. compound words

  387. together.

  388. They're translating

  389. the NIV

  390. with the word

  391. with.

  392. He says,

  393. Gentiles are,

  394. look at the text,

  395. heirs together,

  396. members together,

  397. and sharers together

  398. with the Jews

  399. in all the privileges

  400. that were once

  401. only exclusive

  402. to the people of Israel.

  403. Look at them,

  404. look at them more closely

  405. with me,

  406. very briefly.

  407. Because,

  408. let me say again,

  409. this is of an estimable

  410. value to us.

  411. Because without this,

  412. you wouldn't be here,

  413. Brentsfield Evangelical Church

  414. wouldn't be here,

  415. there wouldn't be a church

  416. in Edinburgh

  417. or anywhere else.

  418. they'd just be

  419. Jewish people in Israel

  420. and scattered around

  421. in Diaspora

  422. and other parts

  423. of the world,

  424. alright?

  425. So,

  426. first of all,

  427. he says,

  428. we're heirs together

  429. with Israel.

  430. The people of Israel

  431. were God's chosen people.

  432. They belonged to him

  433. personally,

  434. intimately,

  435. as his people.

  436. As his family,

  437. they were the children

  438. of Israel.

  439. Other people and races

  440. didn't belong.

  441. And even among

  442. the Jews themselves,

  443. if you trace the history

  444. of the Jewish people,

  445. not everybody born

  446. into the family of Jews

  447. was an heir.

  448. If you know

  449. the Old Testament story,

  450. the two sons of Abraham,

  451. the father of Israel,

  452. Isaac and Ishmael.

  453. Isaac was the chosen one.

  454. Ishmael was not,

  455. contrary to what

  456. the Quran rewrites,

  457. by the way,

  458. but we won't even go there.

  459. Jacob and Esau,

  460. twin boys.

  461. The older one,

  462. Esau,

  463. was not chosen,

  464. but Jacob was chosen.

  465. So,

  466. belonging to Israel

  467. means inheriting

  468. all the privileges

  469. and wealth

  470. of God's own

  471. chosen people.

  472. But now,

  473. Paul says,

  474. as it were,

  475. Gentiles have been

  476. adopted in

  477. and they are heirs,

  478. they share together

  479. with all those privileges.

  480. What are the blessings

  481. they inherit?

  482. Well,

  483. they're the ones

  484. that we looked at

  485. in the opening section,

  486. chapter 1.

  487. I haven't got time

  488. to read it all again,

  489. but if you're a Christian

  490. and you want to know

  491. what a wonderful thing

  492. it is to be a Christian,

  493. then sit down regularly

  494. and read Ephesians 1,

  495. 3 to 14,

  496. where he says,

  497. Praise be to the God

  498. and Father of our Lord

  499. Jesus Christ,

  500. who has blessed us

  501. in the heavenly realms

  502. with every spiritual

  503. blessing in Christ.

  504. And then he lists

  505. all the blessings

  506. that belong to the people

  507. of Israel,

  508. that now belong

  509. to Gentiles,

  510. to each one of us,

  511. through faith

  512. in Jesus Christ.

  513. Christ.

  514. Not only are they

  515. heirs together,

  516. he says,

  517. we are members together

  518. of one body.

  519. See,

  520. it's not as though

  521. Gentiles were kind of

  522. let in as second class citizens.

  523. It was not even that

  524. Gentiles had to become

  525. Jews to belong.

  526. That was a big battle

  527. the early church

  528. wrestled with.

  529. It took a vision

  530. to the Apostle Peter,

  531. the conversion

  532. of a Gentile Roman centurion

  533. to convince him

  534. that Gentiles

  535. were accepted

  536. by God.

  537. No,

  538. Gentiles didn't have

  539. to become Jews

  540. and Jews didn't have

  541. to become Gentiles.

  542. Rather,

  543. they became one new family,

  544. one new people

  545. of God.

  546. I didn't have a chance

  547. to listen to the

  548. previous sermon

  549. because it's not posted

  550. on your website yet,

  551. but last time,

  552. I assume,

  553. in the last time

  554. when we looked at

  555. chapter 2 together,

  556. it's all about this,

  557. about how God

  558. has reconciled

  559. these former enemies

  560. together.

  561. It says,

  562. for he himself

  563. is our peace

  564. who has made

  565. the two groups one

  566. and has destroyed

  567. the barrier,

  568. the dividing wall

  569. of hostility.

  570. So Jews and Gentiles

  571. are members of one body,

  572. the body of Christ.

  573. Our great privilege,

  574. if we belong to Christ,

  575. if you are a Christian,

  576. that is,

  577. if you put your faith

  578. in Jesus Christ,

  579. you receive the Holy Spirit,

  580. you know God's forgiveness

  581. in your life,

  582. you are a member,

  583. it's not just Jesus

  584. and me.

  585. When I grew up,

  586. it was a long time ago,

  587. in my church,

  588. there were lots of

  589. really popular songs

  590. all about Jesus and me.

  591. There's one actually,

  592. the chorus was,

  593. now it's just Jesus and me.

  594. No, it isn't.

  595. It's Jesus and me

  596. and you and you

  597. and you and you

  598. and you and you

  599. and you.

  600. We belong together.

  601. We're part of God's people.

  602. I travel around a lot now,

  603. visiting different churches,

  604. talking to different people,

  605. telling one of my

  606. greatest concerns

  607. is that people today

  608. are giving up

  609. on the local church.

  610. And you talk to them,

  611. you say,

  612. which church are you going to now?

  613. Well, I don't go anywhere really.

  614. I've just been hurt so badly

  615. by these Christians

  616. and I've just had enough really.

  617. I go along from time to time

  618. but I don't really want

  619. to get involved.

  620. Listen,

  621. you cannot afford

  622. not to be involved

  623. because you belong

  624. to God's people.

  625. This is not a plug

  626. from the pastor,

  627. I mention it to him

  628. but if you worship here regularly

  629. then make yourself

  630. part of this body.

  631. Get intimately involved

  632. because you belong

  633. to God's people.

  634. So,

  635. heirs together,

  636. members together

  637. and he says,

  638. share us together

  639. in the promise

  640. in Christ Jesus.

  641. You see,

  642. the promise in Christ Jesus,

  643. the promise of the Messiah Jesus

  644. was one that every Jew

  645. looked forward to

  646. over many generations

  647. in fulfillment

  648. of all the promises

  649. of the prophets.

  650. and these had all

  651. been fulfilled now

  652. in the coming

  653. of Jesus Christ,

  654. the Savior,

  655. the Christ.

  656. So Gentiles

  657. who were ignorant

  658. of such promises

  659. were now sharers

  660. with the Jews

  661. in the same promise

  662. and the culmination

  663. of that promise

  664. was on the day

  665. that we call

  666. the day of Pentecost

  667. when the Holy Spirit

  668. was poured out

  669. upon the people

  670. when the Apostle Peter

  671. preached the first

  672. great sermon

  673. on the day of Pentecost

  674. and at the end of it

  675. people said,

  676. what do we have to do then?

  677. Here's what Peter said.

  678. He said,

  679. repent and be baptized

  680. every one of you

  681. in the name of Jesus Christ

  682. for the forgiveness

  683. of your sins

  684. and you will receive

  685. the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  686. The promise,

  687. notice the word,

  688. the promise is for you

  689. and your children

  690. for all who are far off

  691. for all whom the Lord

  692. our God will call.

  693. He says,

  694. you Jews,

  695. it's mostly a Jewish audience

  696. or Jewish converts listening,

  697. he said,

  698. this promise is for you

  699. and successive generations

  700. but it's also for people

  701. who are far off

  702. whom the Lord

  703. our God will call.

  704. Gentile people.

  705. And they're the people

  706. of subsequent generations

  707. down to our own day.

  708. And the mystery is,

  709. says Paul,

  710. that through the gospel,

  711. the good news of Jesus,

  712. any Gentile

  713. becomes an heir together

  714. with God's people,

  715. sharing in the promise,

  716. part of one body.

  717. Now let me pause

  718. at this point

  719. because I don't know

  720. many of you

  721. and this is really important.

  722. Do you belong?

  723. Have you repented?

  724. That is,

  725. have you turned from your sin?

  726. Here's the promise,

  727. if you turn from your sin,

  728. you put your faith

  729. in Jesus Christ,

  730. God promises two things,

  731. he will forgive you

  732. and he will give you

  733. his Holy Spirit

  734. and you'll walk out of this door

  735. as a member of God's people

  736. because Gentiles

  737. are now included

  738. in something that was exclusive

  739. only to Jews up to this point.

  740. Now,

  741. I realize most of us

  742. probably know that

  743. but I can't communicate

  744. just how dramatic

  745. and how incredible this is.

  746. But it's God's great plan.

  747. You see,

  748. God so lived the world

  749. that he gave his son.

  750. Not just Jews.

  751. Paul says,

  752. I'm not ashamed of the gospel,

  753. it's the power of God

  754. for the salvation

  755. of everyone who believes.

  756. First for the Jew,

  757. then for the Gentile,

  758. Romans 1 verse 16.

    Romans 1:16

  759. So,

  760. this is the secret

  761. that's now out into the open.

  762. Gentiles as well as Jews

  763. are included in God's plan.

  764. That's the description

  765. of the mystery.

  766. Okay,

  767. point two.

  768. Now we return

  769. to the second matter

  770. which is

  771. the revelation

  772. of the mystery.

  773. How was this mystery revealed?

  774. Again,

  775. look at the verses together.

  776. The mystery made known

  777. to me by revelation

  778. as I've already written briefly.

  779. In reading this,

  780. then you will be able

  781. to understand my insight

  782. into the mystery of Christ

  783. which was not made known

  784. to men in other generations

  785. as it has now been revealed

  786. by the Spirit

  787. to God's holy apostles

  788. and prophets.

  789. Two things Paul says here

  790. about this revelation

  791. of this news

  792. that Jews,

  793. Gentiles as well as Jews

  794. are included.

  795. First of all,

  796. he says,

  797. it was not revealed

  798. in the past.

  799. He said,

  800. it was not made known

  801. to men in other generations.

  802. Now,

  803. if you know the Bible,

  804. you will know

  805. that when God made

  806. his promise to Abraham

  807. and made an agreement

  808. to covenant with him.

  809. In Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  810. he said,

  811. through you,

  812. all nations on earth

  813. will be blessed.

  814. The prophets look forward,

  815. the Hebrew prophets

  816. look forward to people

  817. being welcomed

  818. from all over the world.

  819. But the details

  820. of the plan,

  821. the amazement,

  822. the enormity

  823. of the detail

  824. of this plan

  825. was not revealed

  826. until this present moment.

  827. But Paul says,

  828. it's now been revealed

  829. in the present.

  830. And Paul says,

  831. it's been revealed,

  832. first of all,

  833. he says,

  834. it was revealed to me

  835. personally,

  836. made known to me

  837. by revelation.

  838. Again,

  839. it's hard to grasp

  840. how revolutionary

  841. and radical

  842. and offensive it was

  843. that Jews,

  844. that Gentiles

  845. as well as Jews,

  846. were equally loved by God.

  847. How radical this would have been

  848. to a first century Jew.

  849. So in order to make it known,

  850. God chose the least likely candidate

  851. to convince him

  852. that it was true

  853. so he could convince

  854. other people.

  855. And that man

  856. was Saul of Tarsus.

  857. And in order to convince him,

  858. a direct revelation

  859. was necessary.

  860. If you think about it,

  861. it's probably the only way

  862. you could convince a man

  863. like Saul of Tarsus,

  864. convince Pharisee,

  865. believe that Jesus

  866. was a heretic,

  867. crucified by the Romans.

  868. How could he possibly

  869. have been the Messiah?

  870. Imagine the Apostle Peter,

  871. an unlearned fisherman,

  872. trying to persuade Paul

  873. that Jesus was the Messiah.

  874. He'd have probably

  875. out-thought him,

  876. out-quoted him

  877. and everything else.

  878. But it took an amazing revelation,

  879. if you know the Bible,

  880. as Paul,

  881. Saul of Tarsus,

  882. was on his way to Damascus

  883. to round up more Christians,

  884. put them in prison,

  885. execute them.

  886. A light shone from heaven,

  887. a voice said,

  888. Saul, Saul,

  889. why are you persecuting me?

  890. And he recognized

  891. it was the voice of God

  892. and he said,

  893. who are you, Lord?

  894. And he said,

  895. I'm Jesus,

  896. whom you're persecuting.

  897. Interestingly,

  898. when Paul relates this story

  899. to a Jewish king,

  900. this is later on

  901. in the book of Acts,

    Acts 26 chapter mention

  902. chapter 26,

  903. when he tells his story,

  904. he says,

  905. God then said to him,

  906. now get up,

  907. stand on your feet,

  908. I've appointed you

  909. as a servant

  910. and as a witness

  911. to what you've seen of me

  912. and what I will show you.

  913. You're going to tell people

  914. about this

  915. and I'm sending you

  916. to them,

  917. to the Gentiles.

  918. I will rescue you

  919. from your own people,

  920. from the Gentiles,

  921. I'm sending you

  922. to the Gentiles

  923. to open their eyes

  924. and turn them

  925. from darkness to light

  926. and from the power

  927. of Satan to God

  928. so they may receive

  929. forgiveness of sins

  930. and a place among those

  931. who are sanctified

  932. by faith in me.

  933. So Paul says,

  934. this was revealed

  935. to me personally.

  936. But the question

  937. you need to then ask

  938. and which Paul anticipates

  939. is,

  940. was this some kind

  941. of personal delusion

  942. on his part?

  943. No, for Paul tells

  944. the Ephesians,

  945. it was also revealed

  946. to other church leaders.

  947. It has now been revealed

  948. by the Spirit

  949. to God's holy apostles

  950. and prophets.

  951. If you go back

  952. one book from Ephesians,

  953. you come to another letter

  954. written to,

  955. again,

  956. to Greek Christians

  957. in the Roman province

  958. of Galatia.

  959. And Paul relates

  960. how after his conversion

  961. on the road to Damascus,

  962. 14 years later,

  963. he's preparing

  964. for this great ministry

  965. to the Gentiles.

  966. But 14 years later,

  967. he decides to go up

  968. to Jerusalem

  969. to visit the apostles,

  970. the leaders of the church there.

  971. Why does he go?

  972. He says,

  973. I went there

  974. in response,

  975. this is Galatians 2 verse 2,

    Galatians 2:2

  976. I went in response

  977. to a revelation

  978. and set before them

  979. the gospel

  980. that I preach

  981. among the Gentiles.

  982. I did this privately

  983. to those who seemed

  984. to be leaders

  985. for fear

  986. that I was running

  987. or had run my race

  988. in vain.

  989. In other words,

  990. he said,

  991. I wanted to check this out

  992. to make sure

  993. I got this right.

  994. And he shared with them

  995. what God had revealed

  996. to him

  997. that the gospel

  998. was also for Gentiles

  999. as well as Jews.

  1000. Here's the conclusion,

  1001. Galatians 2 verse 7.

    Galatians 2:7

  1002. They saw that

  1003. I had been interested

  1004. with the task

  1005. of preaching the gospel

  1006. to the Gentiles

  1007. just as Peter

  1008. had been interested

  1009. with the task

  1010. of preaching

  1011. to the Jews.

  1012. James,

  1013. Peter and John,

  1014. those reputed

  1015. to be pillars,

  1016. gave me and Barnabas,

  1017. his colleague,

1018. the right hand of fellowship

  1019. when they recognized

1020. the grace given to me.

  1021. They agreed

  1022. that we should go

  1023. to the Gentiles

  1024. and they should go

  1025. to the Jews.

  1026. So Paul says

  1027. his insight

1028. into the mystery of Christ

  1029. is the same

  1030. as the apostles.

  1031. Now again,

  1032. you may say,

  1033. well,

  1034. why is this important?

  1035. Well,

  1036. it's really important

  1037. for one reason.

  1038. With the regularity

  1039. of Halley's Comet,

  1040. but unfortunately

  1041. much more frequently,

1042. around about every 20 years

  1043. in my experience,

  1044. people start to propagate

  1045. an interesting story

1046. and the story is this.

1047. Jesus was a simple teacher

1048. who taught this simple message

1049. and then along came Paul

1050. who was a really bright guy

  1051. and he confused everything

  1052. by developing

1053. a different kind of gospel.

1054. So the gospel of Jesus

  1055. and the gospels

  1056. is different

  1057. to what Paul preached.

  1058. No, it isn't.

  1059. Paul says

1060. we were in absolute harmony.

  1061. We agreed together

  1062. that this revelation

1063. was a revelation from God

1064. because if it doesn't include Gentiles,

  1065. we're not included.

  1066. If you're a Christian,

  1067. it's that gospel

1068. on which you stake your life

  1069. and your eternal destiny.

  1070. So,

1071. we're the most privileged people

  1072. of all

1073. for we live in the day

1074. when the mystery of God's plan,

  1075. the marvelous mystery

  1076. has now been revealed.

  1077. But great privileges

  1078. bring with them

  1079. great responsibilities.

  1080. So we're working backwards,

1081. you'll be glad to know,

1082. we now come to the opening verse

  1083. and what Paul calls

  1084. the administration

  1085. of the mystery.

1086. Look again at verse 1.

  1087. It's kind of,

1088. if you look in the NIV,

  1089. it says,

1090. for this reason I, Paul,

1091. the prisoner of Christ Jesus

1092. for the sake of you Gentiles.

  1093. And then,

  1094. did you notice,

  1095. he breaks off.

  1096. He gets diverted

1097. and he comes back in,

  1098. way back,

1099. further down in verse 14,

1100. he comes back to his,

  1101. for this reason.

1102. For this reason I kneel

  1103. before the Father.

  1104. And he talks about

  1105. what he prays.

  1106. He's diverted because

  1107. what interrupts his thought

  1108. is his present circumstances.

  1109. He says,

  1110. I, Paul,

1111. the prisoner of Christ Jesus

1112. for the sake of you Gentiles.

  1113. The reason he says,

  1114. I'm in prison

1115. is for the sake of you Gentiles.

  1116. And then he says,

  1117. surely you've heard

  1118. about the administration

  1119. of God's grace

1120. that was given to me for you.

  1121. That is the mystery

  1122. made known to me

  1123. by revelation

1124. as I've already written briefly.

  1125. Now he uses

  1126. an interesting word here.

  1127. He uses the word

  1128. translated administration.

  1129. Some versions

  1130. translate it stewardship.

  1131. It's a word

  1132. that was originally used

  1133. for a steward

1134. or a person in charge

  1135. of a rich man's wealth

  1136. who was responsible

  1137. for administering

  1138. his wealth

  1139. and his property

  1140. and his assets.

  1141. In fact,

  1142. I think,

  1143. Derek,

  1144. you're into finances.

  1145. Do you not have

  1146. pension fund administrators?

1147. Are you a pension fund administrator?

  1148. You're not?

  1149. No.

  1150. He just tells you

1151. how to spend your money.

  1152. That's a different thing

  1153. altogether.

  1154. A pension fund administrator

  1155. is someone

  1156. who looks after

  1157. the wealth

  1158. in the pension fund

  1159. and makes sure

1160. it gets to the right people.

  1161. Are you not tired

1162. of picking up your phone

  1163. and someone says,

1164. Are you aware of PPI?

1165. My wife has done everything

  1166. to stop these calls.

1167. She's written all these things,

1168. tried to block the phone.

1169. Every evening she goes mad.

1170. Just as you start your tea,

1171. you pick up the phone

  1172. and someone says,

  1173. Are you aware

1174. that the bank has set aside

  1175. millions of pounds

  1176. for PPI?

1177. I'd never heard of PPI.

  1178. I'd do until

  1179. the last few years.

  1180. But apparently,

1181. and I've hardly ever met anyone

1182. who got anything out of it,

1183. but presumably there are people

  1184. here who are living

  1185. on the proceeds,

  1186. but their role is,

1187. probably not these con people

1188. who are ringing you up

1189. and trying to get a share of it,

  1190. but the role is

  1191. that the banks

  1192. have set aside

  1193. certain funds

  1194. for people who are

  1195. mis-sold PPI.

1196. That's my understanding of it.

1197. You can correct me afterwards

  1198. if I'm wrong.

  1199. But the responsibility

  1200. of the people

  1201. in the banks

  1202. is to make sure

  1203. those who are eligible

1204. get what is due to them.

  1205. And Paul says,

  1206. My role,

  1207. I'm the administrator

  1208. of God's grace.

  1209. All the riches

  1210. that are in Christ,

  1211. all the wonderful things

  1212. that we focus on

  1213. in chapter 1,

  1214. he says,

  1215. All those wonderful things,

  1216. I've got the responsibility

  1217. of making sure

  1218. the Gentiles know

  1219. that they qualify.

  1220. He says,

  1221. Paul's administration

1222. is to share God's grace

  1223. with the Gentiles.

  1224. That's his responsibility,

  1225. that administration.

1226. But notice what he says.

  1227. He says,

1228. It is a costly calling.

  1229. For whenever Paul

  1230. carried out this responsibility,

1231. if you read the book of Acts,

1232. which is the story of,

  1233. second half at least,

  1234. of Paul's journeys

  1235. when he went around

  1236. the Mediterranean world

  1237. telling Gentiles and Jews

1238. about the good news of Jesus,

1239. if you read that account,

  1240. whenever he carried out

  1241. those responsibilities,

1242. it provoked an extreme reaction

1243. on the part of the people

  1244. who heard it,

  1245. in particular the Jews.

  1246. Whenever he said,

  1247. Gentiles are included

  1248. as well as Jews,

  1249. it caused a riot.

  1250. Because the Jews thought

1251. they were the only recipients

  1252. who qualified.

  1253. And that's why Paul

  1254. is writing this letter.

  1255. He says,

  1256. I, Paul,

1257. a prisoner of Christ Jesus

1258. for the sake of you Gentiles.

1259. Now, he's probably referring here

  1260. to a specific story.

  1261. How did Paul,

  1262. Paul is writing this

1263. from a prison cell in Rome.

  1264. He's awaiting trial

  1265. before the Emperor Nero.

1266. How did he get there?

  1267. It's an interesting story.

1268. If you go back again

1269. to the book of Acts,

  1270. Paul was visiting

  1271. the city of Jerusalem,

1272. and he got with him

  1273. some companions

  1274. who were Gentile

  1275. by background,

  1276. and among them

  1277. was one of the,

  1278. probably a man

1279. who was one of the church members

1280. from the church in Ephesus.

  1281. The man named Trophimus.

  1282. A man named Trophimus.

1283. And he was in Jerusalem

  1284. with these Gentiles.

  1285. This man called Trophimus,

  1286. he was visiting Jerusalem,

  1287. and the Jewish people

  1288. heard about it,

1289. and they raised a rumor

  1290. and they said,

1291. Paul has broken Jewish law,

  1292. he's taken this Gentile

  1293. into the inner courts

  1294. that are forbidden

  1295. to Gentiles.

  1296. And literally,

  1297. a riot ensued.

  1298. They dragged Paul

  1299. and his companions

1300. out of the temple area

  1301. to stone him

  1302. and kill him.

  1303. And it caused

  1304. an absolute riot.

  1305. If you picture Jerusalem

  1306. in those days,

  1307. there's this riot

  1308. in the streets.

  1309. Now the Romans knew

1310. that this was the kind of thing

  1311. that often happened

  1312. among the Jews.

1313. So right in the middle

  1314. of the complex

  1315. in Jerusalem,

  1316. they had a fortress

1317. called the Fortress of Antonia,

  1318. and the Jews put

  1319. a squadron of soldiers

  1320. up there

1321. who sat on a tower

  1322. looking down,

  1323. watching out for riots.

  1324. And when they saw

  1325. this riot ensuing,

  1326. the commander

  1327. of the forces

  1328. dashed down the stairs,

  1329. out into the streets,

1330. and ran into the middle

  1331. of the crowd

  1332. to rescue Paul

  1333. and to find out

  1334. what was happening.

  1335. It's a fantastic story.

1336. You can read it in

  1337. Acts chapter 21 and 22.

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  1338. And they literally

1339. have to carry Paul out

  1340. because he's being

  1341. literally torn apart

  1342. by the Jews.

1343. And as they're carrying him

  1344. into the fortress entrance,

  1345. Paul says to him,

  1346. can I just have a word

  1347. with them

1348. before you take me in?

  1349. You might be glad

1350. to get out of there,

  1351. wouldn't you?

  1352. And he said,

  1353. please,

1354. could I just say something?

  1355. And the commander said,

  1356. okay.

  1357. And Paul turns around,

  1358. and if you read

  1359. the book in Acts,

  1360. he speaks in Aramaic,

1361. which is the mother tongue

  1362. of the Jewish crowd.

1363. And the book of Acts

1364. says as soon as he spoke

  1365. in Aramaic,

  1366. they all were

  1367. absolutely silent

  1368. because they recognized

1369. he was one of them.

  1370. And Paul then

  1371. told his story

  1372. of how he became

  1373. a Christian.

  1374. And everybody's listening

  1375. with rapt attention

  1376. until Acts 22,

    Acts 22:21

  1377. verse 21,

  1378. he finally says,

  1379. then the Lord

  1380. said to me,

  1381. go,

  1382. I will send you

  1383. far away

  1384. to the Gentiles.

  1385. And as soon as

  1386. he said this,

  1387. the crowd turns ugly,

  1388. the crowd listened

  1389. to Paul,

  1390. Acts 22,

    Acts 22:22

  1391. verse 22,

  1392. the crowd listened

  1393. to Paul

  1394. until he said this,

  1395. then they raised

  1396. their voices

  1397. and shouted,

1398. rid the earth of him,

1399. he's not fit to live.

1400. And they had to bodily

  1401. lift him up

1402. and carry him to safety.

  1403. And the outcome

1404. of this is that Paul

  1405. appeals to the emperor

  1406. Nero,

1407. and so he's carted off

  1408. to Rome awaiting trial,

  1409. and so he writes

  1410. to the Christians

  1411. in Ephesus and says,

  1412. you know,

  1413. I'm here in prison

1414. for the sake of you Gentiles.

  1415. Probably,

  1416. for the sake specifically

  1417. of your church member

  1418. Trophimus,

  1419. who's the focus

  1420. of this riot.

  1421. You see,

  1422. sharing the marvellous

  1423. mystery,

  1424. in fact,

  1425. here's a test

  1426. of whether you really

  1427. are into gospel preaching.

  1428. It always provokes

  1429. a reaction.

  1430. It always provokes

  1431. hostility.

  1432. That's why Christians

  1433. today are suffering.

  1434. Why are Christians

  1435. so hated?

  1436. That's the politicians

1437. who finally got on board

  1438. with this.

  1439. You see last week

  1440. that David Cameron

1441. and I think Nick Clegg

  1442. and David,

  1443. yeah,

  1444. Ed Miliband,

  1445. get the right,

  1446. Miliband here,

  1447. they all mentioned

  1448. about Christians

  1449. suffering.

  1450. Why do people

  1451. go into school

  1452. in Kenya

  1453. and isolate

  1454. the Christian students

1455. and kill 147 of them?

  1456. Why do they take

  1457. Egyptian Coptic Christians

  1458. down to a beach

  1459. and behead them?

  1460. What have they done?

  1461. They're Christians.

  1462. There is a cost

  1463. to proclaiming

  1464. the gospel

  1465. of Jesus Christ

  1466. and to speaking

  1467. for Christ.

  1468. But Paul knows

  1469. that all of this

  1470. is under God's

  1471. sovereign control

  1472. and we need

  1473. that assurance.

  1474. They need that assurance

1475. for at the sharp end

  1476. of this.

  1477. We may need it

  1478. increasingly in our society

1479. the way things are going.

  1480. And Paul says,

  1481. I'm a prisoner

  1482. of Christ Jesus.

  1483. John Stutt

  1484. in the Bible

  1485. Speaks Today

  1486. Comanche and Ephesians

  1487. writes,

  1488. Humanly speaking,

  1489. Paul was not

  1490. Christ's prisoner

  1491. but Nero's.

1492. But Paul never did speak

  1493. or think in purely

  1494. human terms.

  1495. He believed

  1496. in the sovereignty

  1497. of God

  1498. over the affairs

  1499. of men.

  1500. Therefore,

  1501. he called himself

  1502. literally a prisoner

  1503. of Christ Jesus.

  1504. So convinced

  1505. was he

  1506. that the whole

  1507. of his life,

  1508. including his

  1509. wearisome

  1510. imprisonment,

  1511. was under

  1512. the lordship

  1513. of Christ.

  1514. See,

  1515. there is a cost

  1516. to administering

  1517. the gospel.

  1518. There's a cost

  1519. to administering

  1520. the gospel.

  1521. But all of that

  1522. is under God's

  1523. sovereign control.

  1524. I wonder,

  1525. do you and I

  1526. have that same

  1527. conviction as well?

  1528. Or do we look

  1529. and think,

  1530. this is just terrible.

  1531. It's happening

  1532. all over the world

  1533. to Christians.

  1534. It's terrible

1535. how even in our society

  1536. Christians are being

  1537. discriminated against.

  1538. But it's under

  1539. God's sovereign

  1540. control.

  1541. Paul has this

  1542. responsibility

  1543. to share this

  1544. marvelous mystery.

  1545. The administration

  1546. of God's grace,

  1547. the good news

  1548. of Jesus Christ,

  1549. the gospel.

  1550. That is our mandate

  1551. as Christians.

  1552. We have this

  1553. amazing portfolio

  1554. of everything

  1555. that is offered

  1556. to us in Christ.

  1557. All these wonderful

  1558. promises.

  1559. Read them again

  1560. in Ephesians 1.

  1561. And as a church,

  1562. we have the responsibility

1563. of sharing this good news

  1564. for everybody out there.

  1565. That you're included

  1566. in this.

  1567. You may say,

  1568. people don't want

  1569. to listen.

  1570. People don't want

  1571. to listen to people

  1572. telling you about PPI,

  1573. but it isn't stopping,

  1574. does it?

1575. But this really is true.

  1576. It is for everyone

  1577. who will believe.

  1578. That is our mandate.

  1579. Almost finished.

  1580. Midnight last Sunday,

  1581. the 5th of April,

  1582. sweeping changes

  1583. came into effect

  1584. to allow people

1585. to use their pension funds

  1586. as they pleased.

  1587. It's good news,

  1588. especially for over 55s.

  1589. 2,000 years ago,

  1590. at 3 o'clock

  1591. in the afternoon,

1592. on the day we call

  1593. Good Friday,

  1594. an infinitely more

  1595. important change

  1596. took place

  1597. when Jesus of Nazareth

  1598. died on a cross

  1599. outside the city

  1600. of Jerusalem.

  1601. Mark tells us

  1602. in his Gospel,

  1603. with a loud cry,

  1604. Jesus breathed

  1605. his last

  1606. the curtain

  1607. of the temple

  1608. was torn in two

  1609. from top to bottom.

  1610. The temple,

  1611. the curtain

  1612. that separated sinners

  1613. from a holy God,

  1614. was torn in two.

  1615. The door to heaven

  1616. was open wide

  1617. for all.

  1618. And Mark tells us

  1619. something quite amazing.

  1620. At that moment,

  1621. the first guy

1622. to step through the door

  1623. was a Roman centurion.

  1624. when the centurion

  1625. who stood there

  1626. in front of Jesus

  1627. saw how he died,

  1628. he said,

  1629. Surely,

  1630. this man

1631. was the Son of God,

  1632. the first of

  1633. an innumerable company

  1634. of Gentiles

  1635. who through faith

  1636. in Christ

  1637. enter into God's presence

  1638. and know in person

  1639. for their sins forgiven

  1640. with the hope

  1641. of eternal life

  1642. and all the promises

  1643. of God.

  1644. I hope we're among

  1645. that company,

  1646. each one of us,

  1647. if not,

  1648. make this your day.

  1649. And if we are,

  1650. it's good news

1651. that we need to share

  1652. with other people,

  1653. with the Gentiles

  1654. out there

  1655. in Edinburgh

  1656. and to the ends

  1657. of the earth

  1658. until Christ returns.

  1659. It's a marvellous mystery

  1660. now been revealed.

  1661. Let's rejoice in it.

  1662. Let's just pray briefly

1663. and then I'll hand back

  1664. to Paul.

1665. Let's be bound in quietness

  1666. just for a moment.

  1667. Perhaps you've not yet

  1668. entered into all these

  1669. wonderful privileges

  1670. that are offered

  1671. in the gospel.

  1672. Never really repented

  1673. of your sin.

1674. Put your faith in Jesus.

  1675. Take this opportunity today.

1676. Now is the day of salvation.

  1677. Now is the day

  1678. of God's grace.

  1679. God's grace.

1680. And for those of us

  1681. who have,

  1682. let's rejoice

1683. in all that it means.

  1684. All the privileges

1685. that are ours in Christ.

  1686. Gracious Father,

1687. thank you for the good news

  1688. of the gospel.

  1689. That is good news

  1690. for all people,

  1691. Jews and Gentiles.

1692. May we rejoice in it.

1693. May we live in it.

  1694. May we not live

  1695. as spiritual purpose

  1696. when we have

  1697. all the resources

  1698. and riches of Christ

  1699. available to us.

1700. May we rejoice in it

  1701. and as a church,

1702. may we share this good news,

  1703. this mystery,

  1704. with the watching world

  1705. outside.

1706. And we ask it in Jesus' name

  1707. for your glory.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Thank you.
