  1. Well, pleased to have a seat and a very good morning to everyone.

  2. Just so good. I just found it so refreshing to sing songs about the glorious gospel,

  3. about God's provision, about his goodness and his kindness.

  4. And as we'll see, I'm so fitting for what we're about to look at.

  5. But let's just still ourselves for just a moment and let's pray.

  6. Father God, we thank you so much for the truths we've been singing.

  7. And Father, we ask that you would come and that you would abide with us.

  8. Thank you for our time together this morning.

  9. Help us now as we turn to your words to fix our hearts upon you

  10. and to fix our eyes upon your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

  11. Amen. Well, I wonder just by show of hands, who here has done a marathon?

  12. Wow. Okay, there's about five.

  13. Robert, what marathon have you done?

  14. Edinburgh.

  15. Paris.

  16. Yeah.

  17. There's a hand over here.

  18. Did I imagine that?

  19. Fiona.

  20. A little bit of a marathon.

  21. Excellent.

  22. So did anyone watch the London marathon last week?

  23. Bits of it.

  24. It was on during church, so I hope you got the highlights.

  25. But I noticed this guy called Rob Young.

  26. Did anybody hear about him in the news this week?

  27. So Rob Young, last week at the London marathon, broke a world record.

  28. Now, does anybody know why or how?

  29. So since last year's London marathon, he decided that for every single day

  30. until this year's London marathon, he would run a marathon.

  31. 365 marathons he ran.

  32. Just imagine the blisters on that.

  33. 365 marathons.

  34. I hate the thought of doing a marathon.

  35. Do you know why I hate the thought of doing a marathon?

  36. Because I was a short sprinter at school.

  37. I reckon you give me 100 meters, I could do that all day long.

  38. But a marathon, that's going to massively expose just how unfit I really am.

  39. I wonder if you feel like that with the thought of a marathon.

  40. That's what we're going to see about Israel this morning.

  41. They are tried.

  42. They are tested.

  43. They are put through their paces.

  44. And they are found to be massively unfit.

  45. Now, left our series in Exodus a few weeks ago.

  46. If you were here with the people of Israel at the other side of the Red Sea.

  47. So God had rescued them out of Egypt.

  48. And he delivered them in the most dramatic way possible

  49. as he leads them through the Red Sea.

  50. Halfway through chapter 15, Miriam and the girls, they get the tambourines out.

  51. Not enough tambourines in church these days.

  52. I think you'll agree.

  53. And we get this glorious song of Moses in the first part of chapter 15

  54. where people were singing praises to God.

  55. So here they are, a rescued people at the other side of the Red Sea.

  56. So, what happens next?

  57. Because I imagine if you're like all of us,

  58. the bit before is probably the bit that we know, isn't it?

  59. We know the story up until this point.

  60. And we're probably unfamiliar with what happens next.

  61. We see God hasn't rescued them and then waved cheerio to them.

  62. He hasn't rescued them and left them to fend for themselves.

  63. He knows where he is taking them.

  64. Big picture plan as they head for Canaan.

  65. But also step by step along the journey.

  66. This middle section of this book of Exodus will end with them at Mount Sinai.

  67. You see it in the screen.

  68. And today we'll see that journey from the other side of the Red Sea

  69. to just short of Mount Sinai.

  70. Now who remembers Sesame Street?

  71. Okay, today this sermon is brought to you by the word test.

  72. Okay?

  73. Test.

  74. God is putting Israel to the test.

  75. He's training them.

  76. He's teaching them.

  77. He's molding them.

  78. And he's going to teach Israel truths about themselves.

  79. And he's going to teach Israel truths about himself.

  80. Because this is the thing.

  81. If God is going to give this land to this people, his people,

  82. then he needs to teach them what it means to be his people as they live in the land.

  83. So the big idea this morning is that testing time is training time.

  84. Testing time is training time.

  85. And there's three stages to this testing that Israel are about to go on.

  86. And at each state of the testing,

  87. something about Israel, their unfitness, is going to be exposed.

  88. And something about God is going to be revealed.

  89. And each step of the journey, each stage,

  90. the question we've got to be asking as the audience looking in on this,

  91. as the readers,

  92. is when Israel are tested, how will they react?

  93. Are they going to learn to trust God?

  94. At each stage, are they growing in their faith and their love for God?

  95. Are they developing a true picture of who he really is?

  96. So here at verses 15, 22 to 15, 27,

  97. we see stage one, test one, Marah.

  98. So Moses leads the people into the wilderness

  99. only for them to find no water.

  100. Problem.

  101. They are thirsty.

  102. So how are Israel going to react?

  103. Well, verse 21 of chapter 5, if you've got it there, like we said,

  104. this is what they say.

  105. They sing,

  106. Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.

  107. They've seen God at work.

  108. And then three days and three verses later, grumbling.

  109. What is exposed about Israel?

  110. Israel are forgetful.

  111. And this is going to be one of the big tests for Israel in the wilderness.

  112. Will they remember rightly?

  113. Will they learn to trust God

  114. and to trust that he will provide for them in the day-to-day

  115. and in the tough times

  116. on the basis of what they've already seen him do in their lives?

  117. Put it another way,

  118. will they live by faith

  119. or will they live by sight?

  120. And I guess there's not an awful lot wrong with the request.

  121. It seems pretty reasonable.

  122. If you're thirsty, you want a drink.

  123. But it's the manner and it's the tone in which they ask it that's the issue.

  124. They moan, they complain, they murmur.

  125. The point is, it's not just the water that's bitter.

  126. Their attitudes and their hearts are bitter as well.

  127. How quickly Israel forgets.

  128. And how quickly we forget.

  129. Don't we?

  130. Now I wonder how we're doing at remembering rightly.

  131. How are we doing at remembering rightly?

  132. How are we doing at cultivating a heart attitude

  133. that remembers and gives thanks to God for his goodness

  134. and his grace to us?

  135. And this is what we do, don't we,

  136. when we pray together,

  137. whether it's in small groups

  138. or whether it's the prayer meeting.

  139. We've got plenty of prayer requests.

  140. But how often, friends,

  141. do we not stop to thank God

  142. for the ways that he's been at work

  143. in our lives?

  144. Because the fact of the matter is

  145. that Israel don't remember rightly

  146. and because they don't remember rightly,

  147. it causes them to grumble.

  148. And grumbling is a heart thing.

  149. Paul Tripp,

  150. he calls the heart the steering wheel

  151. of every single human being.

  152. You know, Alex and I,

  153. we went down to Bath a few weekends ago.

  154. We took the tram.

  155. Love the tram, by the way.

  156. But do you remember that whole hoo-ha

  157. with the tram when it was here?

  158. Yeah?

  159. And if nothing else,

  160. did that not expose

  161. that as a people

  162. and as a city

  163. and as a nation,

  164. we love to grumble,

  165. don't we?

  166. We love a moan.

  167. We love a rant.

  168. I was watching with Chloe

  169. up the other night.

  170. I was watching,

  171. have I got news for you?

  172. Slating the politicians

  173. that are standing for election

  174. in a few days' time.

  175. Slating them.

  176. We live in a nation

  177. that loves to grumble.

  178. Friends, can I suggest

  179. that this is one of the key ways

  180. in which we as the people of God

  181. can stand out

  182. and be distinct from this country

  183. and this people that we live in?

  184. That we don't grumble.

  185. That we don't moan.

  186. That we don't complain

  187. just like everyone else.

  188. Would that not be

  189. an amazing testimony

  190. to the transforming power

  191. of the gospel

  192. and of God in our lives?

  193. Would that not be

  194. an amazing testimony

  195. to a transformed heart?

  196. That we don't grumble.

  197. And instead of grumbling,

  198. let's pray.

  199. When you catch yourself grumbling,

  200. whether it's in the church,

  201. whether it's in here about stuff,

  202. whether it's in the world,

  203. check your heart.

  204. what's going on deep down?

  205. Israel forgets.

  206. What is God revealing

  207. about himself?

  208. He is a God who leads.

  209. You see, this plays itself

  210. out in a few ways.

  211. God leads Moses

  212. towards the piece of wood,

  213. throws it in the water,

  214. water becomes fit to drink.

  215. God leads the people

  216. by his words.

  217. Do you see that?

  218. That God desires obedience

  219. from his people.

  220. And you'll notice

  221. that that word test comes up.

  222. This is what God is doing

  223. to his people.

  224. What will they do

  225. with his words?

  226. Will they obey it?

  227. Will they listen to it?

  228. Or will they reject it?

  229. And this is what God says.

  230. This isn't something

  231. that Israel have to figure out

  232. for themselves,

  233. what he wants them to do.

  234. Look at the words

  235. that he uses.

  236. Listen carefully.

  237. Do what is right.

  238. Pay attention.

  239. Keep it.

  240. And so the tension

  241. at this section is,

  242. will they do it?

  243. See how that plays out

  244. in a second.

  245. God leads them

  246. by his word.

  247. God leads Moses

  248. to the staff in the water.

  249. Sorry, rock in the water.

  250. And he leads them to Elam.

  251. A place of refreshment.

  252. A place of joy.

  253. Do you see what Moses

  254. is trying to tell us there?

  255. God knows his people.

  256. God knows what they need.

  257. God knows where he is taking them.

  258. What amazing grace God shows

  259. to this grumbling people.

  260. That's the lesson of Marah.

  261. That Israel is faithless,

  262. but God is faithful.

  263. Like what we were singing earlier.

  264. Israel forgets.

  265. God leads.

  266. Testing times are training times.

  267. And so they travel

  268. from Elam,

  269. chapter 16.

  270. We find them

  271. in the desert of sin.

  272. I'll be honest,

  273. it sounds like a place

  274. none of us should really

  275. want to go to.

  276. Desert of sin.

  277. The question is,

  278. are they learning?

  279. Are they growing

  280. in their faith in God?

  281. Are they learning

  282. to trust Him?

  283. Well, the way they behave,

  284. absolutely they are not.

  285. You notice there's a downward

  286. trajectory to these stories.

  287. Now, would you notice as well

  288. that the grumbling

  289. has now spread

  290. to this whole community?

  291. That's what grumbling does.

  292. It's infectious.

  293. A little warning for us there.

  294. Let's not be the one

  295. who spreads the grumbling.

  296. What is exposed here

  297. about Israel?

  298. They are a denying people.

  299. And you see in this episode,

  300. they deny two things.

  301. Firstly,

  302. they deny the past.

  303. Verse 3,

  304. If only we had died

  305. by the Lord's hand in Egypt.

  306. There we sat around

  307. pots of meat

  308. and ate all the food

  309. we wanted.

  310. But you have brought us

  311. out into this desert

  312. to starve

  313. this entire assembly

  314. to death.

  315. Now, is that really

  316. what Egypt was like?

  317. Now, we looked at it,

  318. didn't we,

  319. a few weeks ago?

  320. Remember the words

  321. that were coming up?

  322. The images,

  323. slave masters,

  324. harsh labor,

  325. death.

  326. And not to mention

  327. that small matter

  328. of a genocide attempt

  329. on all the baby boys.

  330. Remember that?

  331. And what are these guys

  332. interpreting it as?

  333. Oh, we had all the meat

  334. that we wanted.

  335. We had food aplenty

  336. back there.

  337. We were in,

  338. we were in paradise.

  339. So they're rewriting

  340. the past.

  341. They're harking on

  342. about the good old days.

  343. The good old days

  344. that weren't good old days.

  345. So why are they calling

  346. them good old days?

  347. Why are they exaggerating

  348. the past?

  349. Well, they exaggerate

  350. the past because

  351. they are discontent

  352. with where God

  353. has them in the present.

  354. They doubt God's purposes

  355. and his goodness

  356. here and now.

  357. Is this not

  358. the grass is always

  359. greener syndrome?

  360. I wonder if you see that

  361. in your own life.

  362. We do it all the time,

  363. do we not?

  364. That we compare,

  365. that we doubt God's goodness.

  366. What is at the heart

  367. of that when you find

  368. yourself doing it?

  369. It's a heart that denies

  370. the goodness

  371. and the purposes of God

  372. for your life

  373. in the present.

  374. Israel deny

  375. the past

  376. and Israel also deny

  377. the sufficiency

  378. of God.

  379. You see how God supplies

  380. them with an abundant

  381. supply of manna.

  382. The way it was

  383. described here,

  384. wasn't it?

  385. That it's language

  386. at verse 18,

  387. you see it,

  388. that they had their fill,

  389. they had enough,

  390. no one was short,

  391. no one was hungry.

  392. This was an abundant

  393. supply of manna.

  394. Two tests of obedience

  395. here for Israel.

  396. Both the same thing,

  397. really.

  398. Will they trust

  399. and will they obey

  400. God's words?

  401. Firstly,

  402. God says to the people

  403. through Moses,

  404. don't keep the bread

  405. until morning.

  406. Eat it all,

  407. don't keep it

  408. for the next day.

  409. Now what's that all about?

  410. Would it not teach them

  411. that they wake up

  412. every day

  413. with nothing?

  414. And so their first thought

  415. is not,

  416. what am I going to have

  417. for breakfast?

  418. And they look to the corner

  419. of wherever they're sleeping

  420. and there's the bread,

  421. that's what I'm going to have

  422. for breakfast.

  423. They wake up with nothing.

  424. It's not going to teach them

  425. to wake up

  426. and instead of looking

  427. over here,

  428. they look up to God

  429. for their daily provision.

  430. Lord,

  431. I am wholly dependent

  432. on you today

  433. to provide

  434. what I need.

  435. That's what he's teaching them.

  436. He is to be there

  437. everything.

  438. And isn't that a great lesson

  439. for God's people to learn?

  440. It's the first line

  441. of the Lord's prayer,

  442. isn't it?

  443. Give us today

  444. our daily bread.

  445. You know,

  446. Tim Keller would say

  447. that the gospel

  448. isn't the ABC

  449. of the Christian life,

  450. it's the A to Z

  451. of the Christian life.

  452. We need God

  453. every moment

  454. of every day.

  455. There's a reason

  456. Johnny picked that song

  457. to sing,

  458. Abide With Me.

  459. Lord,

  460. I need you every hour.

  461. Our dependency on God,

  462. this is how it works out

  463. in our own lives,

  464. is not to be a mere

  465. afterthought

  466. with your elevens

  467. in the busyness of life,

  468. okay?

  469. It's to be an every moment

  470. of every day thing.

  471. It is absolutely central.

  472. You know,

  473. it was said of

  474. William Wilberforce

  475. that he used to walk around

  476. with a small stone

  477. in his shoe

  478. and every time

  479. he felt that small stone

  480. it would remind him

  481. to pray.

  482. It would remind him

  483. that he is a dependent being.

  484. Love that illustration.

  485. Don't know if I'll

  486. go for that one

  487. but it's a good point,

  488. isn't it?

  489. He is a dependent being.

  490. So will the Israelites

  491. obey God's words?

  492. Well,

  493. kind of.

  494. Some of them do.

  495. Some of them don't.

  496. Verse 20.

  497. See,

  498. it's not just the bread

  499. that stinks,

  500. the obedience does as well.

  501. Second test.

  502. God tells them

  503. to gather bread

  504. for five days.

  505. Why?

  506. Because on the sixth day

  507. they'll gather twice as much

  508. because on the seventh day

  509. they'll be resting.

  510. It's a Sabbath rest.

  511. Again,

  512. are the people going to trust God?

  513. Are they going to obey

  514. his words?

  515. Well,

  516. some of them do

  517. and some of them don't.

  518. Verse 27.

  519. See what's going on here.

  520. Israel disobey

  521. because they deny

  522. God's goodness.

  523. Israel

  524. don't trust

  525. because they deny

  526. God's

  527. sufficiency.

  528. Now,

  529. I wonder if that's a lesson

  530. for us here this morning.

  531. Is there some area

  532. of our lives

  533. where we're not obeying

  534. what God has said?

  535. And behind it

  536. is because we don't

  537. trust him.

  538. We don't know

  539. his goodness.

  540. Well,

  541. into this situation,

  542. what is God revealing

  543. about himself?

  544. He is a God

  545. who sustains.

  546. He gives them

  547. manna.

  548. Verse 31.

  549. You see how Moses

  550. describes this?

  551. This is wafers

  552. with honey.

  553. So this isn't

  554. kind of

  555. Tesco's

  556. saver's beans

  557. that he's given them here.

  558. This is the good stuff

  559. he's given them.

  560. This was nice to eat.

  561. That's what Moses

  562. wants us to know.

  563. Again,

  564. do you see God's

  565. goodness?

  566. And this wasn't

  567. a one-off provision.

  568. Verse 35.

  569. God provided

  570. manna every day

  571. until they are

  572. in the land,

  573. until they're in Canaan

  574. and they're living

  575. off the produce there.

  576. You know,

  577. there's that lovely

  578. little snippet

  579. in the book of Joshua.

  580. Joshua 5,

    Joshua 5:12

  581. verse 12.

  582. He tells us

  583. that the manna

  584. stopped falling

  585. the day after

  586. the day they ate

  587. from the produce

  588. of the land.

  589. God's sustaining

  590. provision.

  591. God's everyday

  592. provision.

  593. Do you see

  594. his protection

  595. here for his people?

  596. Do you see

  597. his love

  598. and his care

  599. and his concern

  600. for their well-being?

  601. God didn't leave

  602. them to fend

  603. for themselves.

  604. He provided

  605. every step

  606. along the way.

  607. everything

  608. that they

  609. needed.

  610. Alex and I

  611. went for a meal

  612. on Wednesday

  613. night,

  614. I think.

  615. First night,

  616. we'd been out

  617. without Chloe.

  618. Weird.

  619. Looking at your

  620. watch every five

  621. minutes,

  622. wondering,

  623. should we go

  624. back?

  625. Anyway,

  626. we had baked

  627. camembert.

  628. Oh,

  629. amazing.

  630. Cooked cheese.

  631. I think it might

  632. be my new thing.

  633. Incredible.

  634. The tastes

  635. were amazing.

  636. But two hours

  637. later,

  638. my stomach,

  639. completely

  640. forgotten about it.

  641. Where's the cereal?

  642. I need some cereal.

  643. This is what's

  644. happening here.

  645. Israel,

  646. they eat this manna

  647. day on day.

  648. They go hungry

  649. again.

  650. And Jesus,

  651. picking up on

  652. this imagery

  653. in John 6,

  654. he says,

  655. I am the bread

  656. from heaven.

  657. I am the bread

  658. of life.

  659. Whoever comes

  660. to me will

  661. never go hungry.

  662. And whoever

  663. believes in me

  664. will never be

  665. thirsty.

  666. Now,

  667. we live in a

  668. Mick Jagger

  669. world,

  670. don't we?

  671. I can't get no

  672. satisfaction.

  673. A world where

  674. we chase all

  675. sorts of things

  676. looking for

  677. lasting joy.

  678. But what do

  679. we find?

  680. We find

  681. bubbles,

  682. bubbles,

  683. don't we?

  684. They fly so high

  685. they reach the sky

  686. and like my dreams,

  687. they fade and die.

  688. Jesus truly

  689. satisfies

  690. the cravings

  691. of our hearts.

  692. This is what

  693. he's saying.

  694. Jesus gives us

  695. life and he

  696. gives us life

  697. to the full.

  698. Do you know

  699. the bread of life?

  700. Do you know

  701. what it means

  702. to have Jesus

  703. satisfy

  704. that inner

  705. craving?

  706. Do you know

  707. what it means

  708. for your

  709. restless heart

  710. to find purpose

  711. and to find

  712. contentment

  713. and to find

  714. identity

  715. in him?

  716. You know,

  717. Moses also

  718. tells us here

  719. that they put

  720. some of it

  721. in the

  722. tabernacle.

  723. Tabernacle

  724. that would

  725. journey with

  726. them,

  727. God's presence

  728. with them

  729. to the

  730. promised land.

  731. Now,

  732. what's that

  733. about?

  734. they put it

  735. in the

  736. tabernacle

  737. so that

  738. future

  739. generations

  740. would know

  741. that God

  742. provided for

  743. them.

  744. God provides

  745. because this

  746. message needs

  747. to be passed

  748. on.

  749. And I wonder

  750. how we're doing

  751. it passing

  752. on the message

  753. of God's

  754. goodness and

  755. his provision

  756. in our lives.

  757. You know,

  758. are we,

  759. as a people,

  760. are we sharing

  761. stories?

  762. Are we in

  763. each other's

  764. lives so that

  765. we know

  766. that God

  767. is at work?

  768. Are we telling

  769. each other

  770. testimonies

  771. about how

  772. God has been

  773. at work?

  774. You know,

  775. I love hearing

  776. stories.

  777. We heard the

  778. Camerons were

  779. up here a couple

  780. of months ago

  781. telling us about

  782. how God was

  783. at work in

  784. their lives,

  785. in their day-to-day

  786. lives.

  787. How is God

  788. at work?

  789. Are we passing

  790. this message

  791. on?

  792. God gives.

  793. God is

  794. gracious.

  795. That's the

  796. lesson of the

  797. manner.

  798. Israel denies,

  799. but God

  800. gives.

  801. Because testing

  802. time is

  803. training time.

  804. Now from the

  805. desert of sin,

  806. they eventually

  807. come to

  808. Rephidim.

  809. And there we

  810. see the third

  811. and the final

  812. test.

  813. And I think

  814. it's probably

  815. the climax

  816. of this

  817. section.

  818. And I

  819. wonder if

  820. you watched

  821. the BBC

  822. interview with

  823. Lance Armstrong

  824. a few months

  825. ago.

  826. I only watched

  827. about ten minutes

  828. of it.

  829. I think there

  830. was a massive

  831. thing.

  832. It was Dan

  833. Rowan,

  834. BBC

  835. correspondent,

  836. and he

  837. put this

  838. question to

  839. Lance Armstrong,

  840. really simple,

  841. a question that

  842. the world wanted

  843. to know.

  844. Lance,

  845. if you had

  846. your chance

  847. again,

  848. would you do

  849. it differently?

  850. He said this.

  851. He said,

  852. if I was

  853. racing in

  854. 2015,

  855. no,

  856. I wouldn't do

  857. it again because

  858. I don't think

  859. you need to do

  860. it again.

  861. But if you

  862. take me back

  863. to 1995,

  864. when doping

  865. was completely

  866. pervasive,

  867. I think I

  868. would probably

  869. do it again.

  870. There's a

  871. man who

  872. hasn't learned

  873. from his

  874. previous failure.

  875. Here we

  876. are,

  877. Israel,

  878. again,

  879. they're in a

  880. place with

  881. no water.

  882. Seen this

  883. before?

  884. Just happened,

  885. didn't it,

  886. a few verses

  887. ago?

  888. Is the test

  889. not?

  890. Have they

  891. learned from

  892. their previous

  893. failure?

  894. earlier?

  895. Previously,

  896. they grumbled

  897. and they

  898. doubted,

  899. so what are

  900. they going

  901. to do

  902. this time?

  903. Well,

  904. they do

  905. exactly the

  906. same and

  907. worse.

  908. I wonder,

  909. just pausing

  910. there for a

  911. minute,

  912. I wonder if

  913. that's true

  914. sometimes in

  915. our Christian

  916. lives as

  917. well.

  918. Do you

  919. find that

  920. the same

  921. stuff,

  922. the same

  923. lessons are

  924. coming up

  925. again and

  926. again and

  927. again?

  928. And I

  929. wonder if

  930. we're learning

  931. the lessons

  932. that God is

  933. trying to

  934. teach us.

  935. What is

  936. exposed here

  937. about Israel?

  938. They are a

  939. hardened people.

  940. They

  941. quarreled.

  942. Now,

  943. that's not

  944. some kind of

  945. friendly fight

  946. amongst

  947. brothers.

  948. Okay?

  949. It's got

  950. aggressive

  951. undertones to

  952. it.

  953. They are

  954. disputing

  955. with one

  956. another.

  957. And what

  958. they're doing

  959. is they're

  960. bringing a

  961. charge

  962. against God.

  963. They're putting

  964. God in the

  965. dock.

  966. You see,

  967. it's quite

  968. accusatory,

  969. isn't it,

  970. what they

  971. say?

  972. Quite

  973. demanding.

  974. They say,

  975. give us

  976. water to

  977. drink.

  978. And what's

  979. behind it is

  980. a hard

  981. heart and

  982. callous

  983. hearts that

  984. have turned

  985. away from

  986. God.

  987. They are

  988. bitter.

  989. And behind

  990. the demand

  991. lies doubts.

  992. Do you see

  993. how that

  994. finishes at

  995. 17.7 with

  996. the question,

  997. is God

  998. really among

  999. us or not?

  1000. Is God

  1001. really with

  1002. us?

  1003. Does he

  1004. really care?

  1005. That's what's

  1006. behind the

  1007. demand.

  1008. How do we

  1009. know that

  1010. God is for

  1011. us and God

  1012. is not

  1013. against us?

  1014. That's the

  1015. question.

  1016. I'm reading

  1017. this great

  1018. book just

  1019. now on

  1020. public

  1021. speeches.

  1022. It's by a

  1023. guy called

  1024. Phil Collins.

  1025. Not calling

  1026. in the air

  1027. tonight,

  1028. Phil Collins.

  1029. The guy who

  1030. used to be

  1031. Tony Blair's

  1032. speechwriter.

  1033. And what

  1034. he's doing

  1035. is he's

  1036. analysing

  1037. famous

  1038. speeches

  1039. from history.

  1040. And I

  1041. read this

  1042. the other

  1043. night.

  1044. He talks

  1045. about the

  1046. Martin

  1047. Luther King

  1048. moment.

  1049. We all

  1050. know what

  1051. the Martin

  1052. Luther King

  1053. moment is,

  1054. don't we?

  1055. In four

  1056. words.

  1057. I have

  1058. a dream.

  1059. That's all

  1060. he needed

  1061. to say.

  1062. The Martin

  1063. Luther King

  1064. moment.

  1065. Now if

  1066. you're

  1067. American,

  1068. especially,

  1069. that is

  1070. a moment

  1071. that defines

  1072. something of

  1073. your nation's

  1074. history,

  1075. isn't it?

  1076. A legendary

  1077. moment in

  1078. the life

  1079. of a

  1080. nation.

  1081. Well

  1082. Israel,

  1083. as a

  1084. nation,

  1085. they have

  1086. a moment

  1087. to look

  1088. back on.

  1089. It's not

  1090. a Martin

  1091. Luther King

  1092. moment.

  1093. It's a

  1094. Massa and

  1095. Meribah

  1096. moment.

  1097. And this

  1098. episode right

  1099. here becomes

  1100. synonymous not

  1101. so much with

  1102. liberty,

  1103. but with

  1104. loathing.

  1105. Because the

  1106. people,

  1107. there is a

  1108. deep distrust

  1109. of God in

  1110. them.

  1111. Moses picks

  1112. up on this

  1113. in Deuteronomy.

  1114. The

  1115. psalmist picks

  1116. up on this

  1117. in Psalm

  1118. 95.

  1119. The writer to

  1120. the Hebrews

  1121. picks up on

  1122. this at

  1123. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1124. 3.

  1125. All with the

  1126. same warning

  1127. to their

  1128. respective

  1129. generations,

  1130. learn the

  1131. lesson.

  1132. Hebrews 3.

  1133. If you can

  1134. see that

  1135. on the

  1136. screen,

  1137. then if

  1138. you can't,

  1139. let me just

  1140. read it

  1141. out.

  1142. This is

  1143. what the

  1144. writer to

  1145. the Hebrews

  1146. says to

  1147. his generation.

  1148. So as

  1149. the Holy

  1150. Spirit says,

  1151. quoting

  1152. Psalm 95,

  1153. today,

  1154. today, if

  1155. you hear

  1156. his voice,

  1157. do not

  1158. harden your

  1159. hearts as

  1160. you did in

  1161. the rebellion

  1162. during the

  1163. time of

  1164. testing in

  1165. the wilderness

  1166. where your

  1167. ancestors

  1168. tested and

  1169. tried me,

  1170. though for

  1171. 40 years

  1172. they saw

  1173. what I

  1174. did.

  1175. That is

  1176. why I

  1177. was angry

  1178. with that

  1179. generation.

  1180. I said,

  1181. their hearts

  1182. are always

  1183. going astray

  1184. and they

  1185. have not

  1186. known my

  1187. way.

  1188. So I

  1189. declared on

  1190. oath in

  1191. my anger,

  1192. they shall

  1193. never enter

  1194. my rest.

  1195. Then the

  1196. writer to

  1197. the Hebrews,

  1198. to his

  1199. generation,

  1200. he goes

  1201. on and

  1202. he says,

  1203. see to it

  1204. brothers and

  1205. sisters,

  1206. that none

  1207. of you

  1208. has a

  1209. sinful,

  1210. unbelieving

  1211. heart that

  1212. turns away

  1213. from the

  1214. living God,

  1215. but encourage

  1216. one another

  1217. daily as

  1218. long as it

  1219. is called

  1220. today,

  1221. so that

  1222. none of

  1223. you may

  1224. be hardened

  1225. by sin's

  1226. deceitfulness.

  1227. Do you see

  1228. what he's

  1229. saying?

  1230. He's telling

  1231. his generation

  1232. of God's

  1233. people,

  1234. don't make

  1235. the same

  1236. mistakes that

  1237. the Israelites

  1238. made in

  1239. the desert.

  1240. Learn the

  1241. lesson.

  1242. Don't have

  1243. for yourself

  1244. a Massa

  1245. and Meribah

  1246. moment.

  1247. Don't have

  1248. hearts that

  1249. are hard

  1250. and callous,

  1251. that fail to

  1252. believe in the

  1253. purposes and

  1254. the goodness

  1255. and the

  1256. plans and

  1257. the promises

  1258. of God.

  1259. Wash your

  1260. heart.

  1261. And that's a

  1262. lesson for our

  1263. generation as

  1264. well today.

  1265. I wonder if

  1266. some of us

  1267. this morning,

  1268. deep down,

  1269. are asking

  1270. that question

  1271. in our

  1272. hearts.

  1273. is God

  1274. really among

  1275. us or not?

  1276. Are we

  1277. slipping

  1278. into unbelief?

  1279. Maybe you're

  1280. here and you're

  1281. not a Christian

  1282. this morning and

  1283. actually your

  1284. question is,

  1285. how do I know

  1286. that God

  1287. loves me?

  1288. How do I

  1289. know,

  1290. how do I

  1291. know that

  1292. he's for

  1293. me?

  1294. We'll see

  1295. what God

  1296. reveals about

  1297. himself.

  1298. He is a

  1299. God who

  1300. provides.

  1301. Now see,

  1302. if this was

  1303. me and

  1304. Israel were

  1305. moaning again

  1306. and again

  1307. and again,

  1308. if this was

  1309. my child,

  1310. I think I'd

  1311. be tempted to

  1312. leave them,

  1313. would you

  1314. not?

  1315. I wouldn't

  1316. leave her if

  1317. she'd.

  1318. But do you

  1319. see how God

  1320. is so gracious

  1321. with his

  1322. people?

  1323. Do you see

  1324. how he's so

  1325. patient with

  1326. his people?

  1327. They ask,

  1328. is the Lord

  1329. really among

  1330. us or not?

  1331. It's almost

  1332. as if God

  1333. says,

  1334. to answer

  1335. that question,

  1336. look to

  1337. the rock.

  1338. This is what

  1339. happens.

  1340. Moses goes to

  1341. the rock

  1342. and he

  1343. strikes it

  1344. and out

  1345. comes life

  1346. giving water

  1347. to have

  1348. people who

  1349. are going

  1350. to die

  1351. if they

  1352. don't

  1353. drink.

  1354. That's how

  1355. you know

  1356. I'm for you.

  1357. It's almost

  1358. what God

  1359. is saying.

  1360. And Paul

  1361. picks up on

  1362. this in

  1363. 1 Corinthians

  1364. 10 and

  1365. he says

  1366. that the

  1367. rock is

  1368. Christ.

  1369. that rock

  1370. was Jesus.

  1371. Now how on

  1372. earth has he

  1373. got to that

  1374. conclusion?

  1375. It's an

  1376. inspired word,

  1377. it must be

  1378. right.

  1379. So how has he

  1380. got there?

  1381. We see

  1382. Moses

  1383. strikes the

  1384. rock

  1385. and out

  1386. comes

  1387. life-giving

  1388. water.

  1389. Jesus

  1390. struck,

  1391. killed,

  1392. and John

  1393. records for

  1394. us in

  1395. chapter 1,

  1396. I think

  1397. it's chapter

  1398. 19 I've

  1399. written one,

  1400. that as

  1401. Jesus was

  1402. struck and

  1403. as he was

  1404. pierced,

  1405. out came

  1406. blood and

  1407. water.

  1408. His point,

  1409. John's point,

  1410. Paul's point,

  1411. that through

  1412. the death

  1413. of Jesus,

  1414. through the

  1415. striking of

  1416. Jesus,

  1417. we have

  1418. life.

  1419. That is the

  1420. wonderful news

  1421. of the gospel.

  1422. How do I know

  1423. that God is

  1424. for me?

  1425. How do I know

  1426. that God cares

  1427. for me?

  1428. How do I know

  1429. that he loves

  1430. me?

  1431. God would say

  1432. to that

  1433. generation,

  1434. God says

  1435. to this

  1436. generation,

  1437. look to

  1438. the rock.

  1439. The question

  1440. for us is,

  1441. have we

  1442. drunk from

  1443. the rock

  1444. and have we

  1445. received life

  1446. from its

  1447. life-giving

  1448. water?

  1449. Paul writes

  1450. in Romans 9,

  1451. he who did

  1452. not spare

  1453. his own son

  1454. but gave him

  1455. up for us

  1456. all,

  1457. how will he

  1458. not also

  1459. give us

  1460. all things?

  1461. Romans chapter

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  1462. 9.

  1463. We mustn't

  1464. doubt the

  1465. sufficiency

  1466. and the

  1467. goodness of

  1468. God.

  1469. How do we

  1470. know that

  1471. he loves

  1472. us?

  1473. We look

  1474. to the

  1475. rock.

  1476. You see,

  1477. testing time

  1478. is training

  1479. time.

  1480. Just as we

  1481. bring a few

  1482. of these

  1483. things together

  1484. as we

  1485. close,

  1486. to see how

  1487. God takes

  1488. us,

  1489. his people,

  1490. through

  1491. afflictions,

  1492. to help us

  1493. see our own

  1494. helplessness,

  1495. to help us

  1496. bring our

  1497. own self-confidence

  1498. to an end,

  1499. and to teach

  1500. us to

  1501. exclusively

  1502. trust in

  1503. him alone.

  1504. That he

  1505. doesn't beam

  1506. us up

  1507. magically from

  1508. the trials

  1509. and the

  1510. pressures of

  1511. life,

  1512. but he

  1513. uses them

  1514. to demonstrate

  1515. our complete

  1516. inadequacy

  1517. and his

  1518. complete

  1519. dependability.

  1520. You know,

  1521. I wonder as we've

  1522. looked at his

  1523. word this

  1524. morning,

  1525. what has been

  1526. exposed about

  1527. your life?

  1528. What areas

  1529. are you

  1530. unfit in?

  1531. Maybe you've

  1532. got a lack

  1533. of patience.

  1534. Maybe you're

  1535. going through

  1536. that just

  1537. now.

  1538. You lack

  1539. trust in

  1540. God's

  1541. perfect and

  1542. good timing.

  1543. Maybe you've

  1544. got misplaced

  1545. identity in

  1546. a job or

  1547. a relationship

  1548. that's let

  1549. you down.

  1550. Maybe you

  1551. need to

  1552. learn and

  1553. understand and

  1554. grasp your

  1555. identity in

  1556. Jesus Christ.

  1557. What has

  1558. God revealed

  1559. to you about

  1560. himself?

  1561. from his

  1562. words,

  1563. his unfailing

  1564. provision,

  1565. his purposes,

  1566. his goodness.

  1567. What is God

  1568. teaching us

  1569. this morning?

  1570. I hate

  1571. marathons.

  1572. I hate being

  1573. put through my

  1574. paces,

  1575. but I know

  1576. it's good for

  1577. me.

  1578. Let's pray

  1579. together.

  1580. And maybe

  1581. let's just

  1582. have a moment

  1583. quiet.

  1584. just if there's

  1585. some business

  1586. that we need

  1587. to do with

  1588. God,

  1589. this opportunity

  1590. now to

  1591. confess and

  1592. get right with

  1593. him,

  1594. to ask him

  1595. that you

  1596. truly abide

  1597. with us.

  1598. God,

  1599. let's

  1600. hear it.

  1601. And so,

  1602. Father,

  1603. we just

  1604. close with

  1605. the words

  1606. of that

  1607. hymn that

  1608. we sang

  1609. earlier and

  1610. declare that

  1611. great is

  1612. your faithfulness.

  1613. Oh,

  1614. God,

  1615. my Father,

  1616. there is

  1617. no shadow

  1618. of turning

  1619. with you.

  1620. You

  1621. change

  1622. not,

  1623. your

  1624. compassions,

  1625. they fail

  1626. not.

  1627. As you

  1628. have been,

  1629. you will

  1630. forever

  1631. will be.

  1632. Lord,

  1633. help us

  1634. by your

  1635. spirit to

  1636. trust you

  1637. more,

  1638. to know you

  1639. more intimately

  1640. this week,

  1641. we pray.

  1642. In Jesus'

  1643. name,

  1644. Amen.

  1645. Amen.
