  1. Well, if you want to keep your Bibles in front of you,

  2. that would be helpful as we walk through the text together.

  3. It's already been read to us.

  4. For those who didn't catch it before, we're in Genesis 39 and 40.

  5. I think I'm carrying on a series that you've been doing in Genesis.

  6. What's this one, the third?

  7. Second?

  8. Third.

  9. So it doesn't matter if you haven't been to the other ones.

  10. This will stand independently,

  11. but hopefully fit nicely into what you've been learning through Genesis.

  12. Shall we ask for the Lord's help?

  13. In this, as we come to look at his word, let's do that now.

  14. Father God, we thank you for the words of that hymn,

  15. because they remind us that you are a God who is faithful to us.

  16. And when we look back on our lives, we can see just how faithful you've been.

  17. The fact that we're standing here today,

  18. praising your name still shows that you have preserved us

  19. through the ups and downs of life.

  20. And we thank you that he who began a good work

  21. and as we'll bring it to completion one day.

  22. And we'll always have his hand upon us.

  23. And Lord, we thank you that we have your words to look at this evening.

  24. We thank you that it is living and active, Lord.

  25. I pray that you'd help us to understand the text we're going to be looking at.

  26. I pray for anyone who's feeling particularly tired on this Sunday evening.

  27. I pray you give us ears to really listen to what you have to say to us.

  28. And I pray that as I preach, Lord, that I might do it faithfully to you.

  29. And that by your spirit, you might speak to each one of us.

  30. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. So I wonder if you've ever been in a place in your life

  34. where you feel like life is just all over the place

  35. and you don't know what God is doing.

  36. If life's all over the place, you don't know what God is doing.

  37. It might be that something difficult has happened to you.

  38. There's some sort of suffering or it might be that you've had a plan in your head

  39. and hasn't gone quite as you maybe planned out for it to happen.

  40. It's just like life has hit you right in the face

  41. and suddenly it's like, where is God?

  42. What's going on?

  43. What's he doing?

  44. It's like that couple that you've read in the news

  45. went up Mount Everest for their honeymoon a few weeks ago

  46. and then the earthquake hit.

  47. And suddenly their honeymoon is not so joyous anymore

  48. as their camp is filled with snow all around them.

  49. Life just hits.

  50. Happens to us, doesn't it?

  51. Well, imagine how Joseph felt

  52. as he shipped down the road by his brothers.

  53. Imagine that.

  54. He was daddy's favourite, wasn't he?

  55. With the coat.

  56. He had these mad dreams about him becoming great.

  57. Life seemed good.

  58. Joseph had plans for the future.

  59. God's blessing was on his life.

  60. God was going to sort him right out going forwards.

  61. But as we find ourselves in chapter 39,

  62. all those dreams seem crushed, don't they?

  63. I mean, Joseph is a slave in Egypt, the text says.

  64. And that would have been a pleasant experience.

  65. It's easy to skirt over the details.

  66. That would have been difficult for Joseph.

  67. I mean, he's away from his family,

  68. his place of security.

  69. He's away from the land that God had promised to his ancestors.

  70. He's in a pagan country

  71. where they literally would worship every god under the sun.

  72. And he's a slave in a ruthless society.

  73. Life has hit him in the face.

  74. Life is all over the place for this young teenager.

  75. But the key in this text that we see throughout

  76. is that although Joseph's life is difficult here,

  77. God is with him.

  78. Throughout this chapter,

  79. we see that although Joseph goes through very difficult circumstances,

  80. God's hand is on Joseph.

  81. Just look at verse 2.

  82. It says there,

  83. the Lord is with Joseph

  84. and he became a successful man

  85. and he was in the house of his Egyptian master.

  86. And at the end of a chapter,

  87. it says,

  88. but the Lord

  89. was with Joseph

  90. and showed his steadfast love

  91. and gave him favor.

  92. That's verse 21.

  93. So even though Joseph is a slave

  94. and then later on he's in prison,

  95. the God of the Bible

  96. is with him.

  97. And the word here for the Lord

  98. is the word Yahweh.

  99. Which is his personal name

  100. with which he reveals himself to his people.

  101. It's his covenant-keeping name.

  102. And it's interesting,

  103. as you read through Genesis,

  104. the word Yahweh hasn't been used

  105. for the last 10 chapters.

  106. Hasn't been used.

  107. It's only when he gets down to Egypt

  108. in this godless society

  109. as a slave

  110. that again Yahweh has used this word,

  111. his covenant-keeping name.

  112. What does this show us?

  113. This shows us that the God of the Bible

  114. is with his people

  115. in the most difficult

  116. and godless situations.

  117. When people's lives are all over the place

  118. and things are all at sea,

  119. God is with his people.

  120. And this is the kind of language

  121. that is used throughout

  122. the Old Testament and the New.

  123. Even just before in Genesis,

  124. in Genesis chapter 26,

    Genesis 26:24

  125. verse 24,

  126. God says to Isaac this,

  127. I am the God of Abraham,

  128. your father.

  129. Fear not,

  130. for I am

  131. with you.

  132. Fear not,

  133. for I am with you.

  134. A bit later on

  135. to his father,

  136. Jacob,

  137. he says this,

  138. Behold,

  139. I am with you

  140. and will keep you

  141. wherever you go

  142. and will bring you back

  143. to this land

  144. for I will not leave

  145. until I have done

  146. what I have promised you.

  147. That was 28.15

  148. if you're taking notes.

  149. And so no matter

  150. what we go through in life,

  151. in the ups and downs,

  152. the lefts and rights,

  153. God is with his people.

  154. He never leaves them

  155. nor does he forsake them.

  156. And while Joseph

  157. is at Potiphar's house

  158. as a slave,

  159. God's hand is upon him

  160. as we see in the text.

  161. And it says that he rises

  162. through the ranks.

  163. God is with him

  164. and so he allows

  165. his child to prosper.

  166. The text says that

  167. Joseph found favor

  168. in Potiphar's sight

  169. and he made him

  170. overseer of the house.

  171. He trusted Joseph

  172. with everything.

  173. Just look at verses 5 and 6.

  174. From that time

  175. that he made him

  176. overseer in the house

  177. and over all that he had,

  178. the Lord blessed

  179. the Egyptian's house

  180. for Joseph's sake.

  181. The blessing of the Lord

  182. was on all that he had

  183. in house and field.

  184. So Potiphar,

  185. he left all that he had

  186. in Joseph's charge.

  187. And because of him

  188. he had no concern

  189. about anything

  190. but the food he ate.

  191. That's big,

  192. that's amazing, isn't it?

  193. He's a slave

  194. and he's a foreigner

  195. and yet

  196. because God's hand

  197. is upon him

  198. he is put in charge

  199. of this house.

  200. How did Potiphar

  201. see that God's hand

  202. was on him anyway?

  203. Well one,

  204. Joseph must have been

  205. sharing his religious convictions

  206. with Potiphar.

  207. He must have been

  208. telling him about Yahweh

  209. and how he'd been

  210. leading his people

  211. and the promises

  212. that he had kept.

  213. But two,

  214. Joseph as we see

  215. throughout these chapters

  216. is a man of integrity.

  217. As we see later on

  218. he's a man who is faithful.

  219. He's a man who is trustworthy.

  220. He's a man who doesn't

  221. cut corners.

  222. He works hard

  223. for his boss.

  224. And if you think again

  225. about the circumstances

  226. this is an amazing reaction

  227. from Joseph, isn't it?

  228. I mean,

  229. rather than getting bitter,

  230. rather than getting depressed

  231. with his new surroundings

  232. which would have been

  233. difficult for him

  234. as we've seen,

  235. what does Joseph do?

  236. He gets on with the job.

  237. He doesn't moan.

  238. He doesn't complain.

  239. He doesn't sulk.

  240. Throughout the next

  241. two chapters

  242. we see that despite

  243. what is thrown at Joseph

  244. he's faithful to his God.

  245. That's a challenge

  246. to us this evening,

  247. isn't it?

  248. Because often when

  249. things don't go our way

  250. we go off in a little huff,

  251. don't we?

  252. We act like toddlers.

  253. We get impatient.

  254. We get angry.

  255. We sulk.

  256. We get frustrated with God.

  257. Oh,

  258. it hasn't worked out

  259. as I wanted it to.

  260. But Joseph shows us

  261. what to do

  262. in difficult circumstances,

  263. does he not?

  264. Stay faithful to God.

  265. Maybe you're in a situation

  266. this evening

  267. where things haven't worked out

  268. as you planned

  269. for whatever reason.

  270. Maybe you're going

  271. through a difficult time

  272. in your life

  273. as we do.

  274. The key is not to sulk

  275. and get bitter

  276. with our circumstances

  277. but to stay faithful to God.

  278. To get on with

  279. what God has called us to

  280. because he's with us

  281. even if it's difficult.

  282. Anyway,

  283. things are going well

  284. for Joseph

  285. and part of his house.

  286. He's risen through the ranks

  287. and God's hand is upon him

  288. but as we see

  289. throughout the Bible

  290. whenever there's times

  291. of prosperity

  292. the devil is lurking

  293. in the background,

  294. isn't he?

  295. He's always trying to tempt

  296. and destroy the people of God.

  297. It's been like that

  298. since the garden

  299. and Joseph is no different.

  300. The text says that

  301. Joseph was a bit

  302. of a good looking guy.

  303. Look at verse 6b.

  304. The scene shifts

  305. slightly, doesn't it?

  306. Now Joseph

  307. was handsome

  308. in form and appearance.

  309. Apparently he was a bit

  310. of a Brad Pitt.

  311. A few girls like Brad Pitt,

  312. I don't know.

  313. Good jawline,

  314. nice abs.

  315. Good looking guy.

  316. Stephen knows

  317. what I'm talking about.

  318. Apopha's wife

  319. takes a bit of a shine

  320. to the young lads.

  321. In fact,

  322. she is full of lust for him

  323. and she ain't shy about it.

  324. The text says that

  325. day after day after day

  326. she gets him to try

  327. and lie in bed with him.

  328. Now think about it.

  329. The circumstances

  330. that we just built up

  331. in our heads.

  332. You're Joseph.

  333. You're a young man.

  334. You're full of testosterone.

  335. You're away from home.

  336. You're in a foreign land

  337. and you have a beautiful lady

  338. offering you sex.

  339. What would you do,

  340. lads,

  341. if you're honest with yourself?

  342. Most men

  343. would jump straight

  344. into bed with her.

  345. That's a major bit

  346. of temptation

  347. that Joseph's facing.

  348. And it would have been easy

  349. for him to justify

  350. it in his head,

  351. wouldn't it?

  352. Just a quick one.

  353. No harm done.

  354. I deserve this little bit

  355. of joy after all the

  356. difficult things

  357. I've been going through.

  358. I mean, I'm a slave.

  359. Or maybe this will help

  360. me get ahead even more

  361. and fulfill God's plan.

  362. It would have been easy

  363. for him to justify

  364. it in his head.

  365. But how does Joseph react?

  366. He's a man of integrity.

  367. He's a man of purity.

  368. Look at verses 8 and 10.

  369. But he refused.

  370. He refused.

  371. He said to his master's wife,

  372. Behold,

  373. because of me

  374. my master has no concern

  375. about anything in the house

  376. and he has put everything

  377. that he has in my charge.

  378. He is not greater

  379. in this house than I am,

  380. nor has he kept back

  381. anything from me

  382. except yourself

  383. because you are his wife.

  384. How then can I do

  385. this great wickedness

  386. and sin against God?

  387. And as she spoke to Joseph

  388. day after day,

  389. he would not listen to her

  390. to lie beside her

  391. or to be with her.

  392. He says,

  393. basically,

  394. I can't sleep with you

  395. because it will dishonor

  396. your husband

  397. and my master

  398. and more importantly,

  399. it will dishonor

  400. the Lord.

  401. God's.

  402. He knows that God

  403. is with him

  404. and he knows

  405. that this is a great wickedness.

  406. Reminds us of Psalm 51,

  407. isn't it?

  408. After David sinned

  409. against Bathsheba

  410. and he said,

  411. only against you.

  412. Against you only

  413. have I sinned.

  414. That's his main thing.

  415. That's his main

  416. drive in life.

  417. He wants to honor the Lord.

  418. He wants to stay faithful

  419. to him as we've seen.

  420. And how different

  421. is his reaction to us?

  422. He says,

  423. this is really

  424. a great wickedness

  425. against you,

  426. the Lord.

  427. Often when we

  428. want to sin,

  429. what do we do?

  430. We sweep the seriousness

  431. of the sin

  432. under the carpet.

  433. Push it to the sides.

  434. Speak to ourselves,

  435. well this sin,

  436. it's not that bad.

  437. God won't mind that much

  438. if I do this or that.

  439. What harm am I doing anyway?

  440. I deserve it.

  441. But Joseph knows

  442. the Bible.

  443. Joseph knows

  444. that God is a God

  445. of holiness

  446. and that he takes sin

  447. very, very seriously

  448. and so he says no.

  449. The thing is

  450. with Joseph

  451. that I admire,

  452. he doesn't just say no once,

  453. but day after day

  454. she's after him

  455. and he says no again

  456. and again

  457. and again

  458. and again

  459. and again.

  460. And on that final encounter

  461. when she actually

  462. pulls his cloak,

  463. he runs from her.

  464. Reminds us of

  465. the New Testament

  466. where Paul writes

  467. in 1 Corinthians 6

    1 Corinthians 6:18

  468. verse 18,

  469. flee.

  470. Flee

  471. from sexual

  472. immorality.

  473. In other words,

  474. run away from sin.

  475. That's what we've been

  476. called to do as Christians.

  477. The problem with us

  478. sometimes as Christians

  479. is this,

  480. we don't run away from sin,

  481. we run straight into it.

  482. Sometimes when our hearts

  483. going off

  484. away from the Lord,

  485. we look for it,

  486. don't we?

  487. We don't guard against sin.

  488. In fact,

  489. we dishonor the Lord.

  490. But if we're going to be

  491. people of integrity,

  492. we're going to be people

  493. who follow like Joseph,

  494. then we need to run

  495. from temptation,

  496. not straight into it.

  497. We need to know

  498. the seriousness of sin,

  499. the great wickedness

  500. that it is against the Lord.

  501. Don't sweep under a carpet.

  502. Remember that God

  503. is the holy,

  504. holy,

  505. holy God

  506. and creator

  507. who has called us

  508. to holiness as well.

  509. We need to know

  510. that our sin leads

  511. and has difficult

  512. and bad consequences

  513. in our lives.

  514. It leads to death.

  515. A famous guy

  516. called John Owen

  517. writes this,

  518. Do you mortify?

  519. Prosh word for

  520. do you kill sin?

  521. Do you make it

  522. your daily work?

  523. Be always at it

  524. while you live.

  525. Cease not a day

  526. from this work.

  527. Be killing sin

  528. or it will be killing you.

  529. Be killing sin

  530. or it will be killing you.

  531. You see,

  532. the Bible says run.

  533. The Bible says flee.

  534. The Bible says kill sin.

  535. The Bible says

  536. don't play with it.

  537. Don't play with it.

  538. Don't be like a dog

  539. that constantly returns

  540. to its vomit.

  541. As the proverb writer says,

  542. kill sin

  543. or it will literally

  544. kill us spiritually.

  545. And it's interesting

  546. that as you look at Joseph

  547. here in verse 10

  548. that it's the opposite

  549. of Adam and Eve

  550. in the garden.

  551. So in the garden,

  552. what does Satan do?

  553. He tempts.

  554. Then with the one thing

  555. they're not allowed.

  556. They've got everything

  557. that they could want

  558. and need.

  559. But God says one thing.

  560. Don't eat of the tree

  561. of knowledge

  562. of good and evil.

  563. What do they do?

  564. They disappear

  565. with that one thing.

  566. But here,

  567. Joseph has been given

  568. all things by his master

  569. as he says in verse 9.

  570. Except that one thing,

  571. his wife.

  572. And what does he do?

  573. He rejects it.

  574. He's a man of integrity

  575. and he has the honour

  576. of the Lord

  577. at the forefront

  578. of his mind.

  579. And in his actions,

  580. he points forward

  581. to the Lord Jesus,

  582. doesn't he?

  583. Hebrews 4.15

  584. says this,

  585. we do not have

  586. a high priest

  587. who is unable

  588. to sympathise

  589. with our weaknesses,

  590. but who in every respect

  591. has been tempted

  592. as we are yet

  593. is without sin.

  594. I mean,

  595. Joseph is faithful

  596. to God

  597. in this moment.

  598. And God uses him

  599. to complete

  600. his plan of salvation

  601. for his people,

  602. doesn't he?

  603. You know that

  604. from a couple of chapters

  605. later on.

  606. What did the Lord Jesus do?

  607. He resisted temptation

  608. against temptation

  609. against temptation.

  610. He was without sin

  611. and he was able

  612. to buy our salvation.

  613. Joseph points to the better

  614. and greater Joseph

  615. which is Jesus.

  616. Let me challenge you

  617. this evening.

  618. Maybe you've been

  619. dabbling with sin

  620. a little bit in your life.

  621. Maybe you're bitter

  622. with your circumstances

  623. and you've been

  624. justifying your little sins.

  625. Maybe you haven't been

  626. taking sin seriously

  627. in your life.

  628. Maybe you've been

  629. running to sin

  630. and not away from it.

  631. Well, the call here is

  632. follow Joseph

  633. and receive life.

  634. Follow Joseph

  635. and run away from sin.

  636. Leave it behind.

  637. Leave it behind.

  638. Because if you live

  639. a half-hearted

  640. Christian life,

  641. it leads to misery.

  642. That's all it leads to.

  643. When we walk

  644. with the Lord

  645. of integrity of heart,

  646. we are blessed

  647. and we receive

  648. great joy.

  649. And know that

  650. if you are in sin

  651. this evening,

  652. that there is great hope

  653. for each one of us.

  654. And that's through

  655. Jesus Christ,

  656. isn't it?

  657. Because when we run

  658. away from sin,

  659. we can run into his arms

  660. and receive mercy

  661. and find grace

  662. for our time of need,

  663. as the writer

  664. of the Hebrews

  665. later says.

  666. So what does Joseph

  667. get for his troubles

  668. of rejecting

  669. the temptation?

  670. Does he get a nice

  671. pat on the back?

  672. A little hug

  673. from his wife?

  674. No, he gets

  675. prisoned for his troubles.

  676. Pot of his wife,

  677. angry at the rejection,

  678. she calls rape.

  679. She tells the guards

  680. and tells Potiphar

  681. himself.

  682. She plays on the fact

  683. that Joseph is a foreigner.

  684. Potiphar is obviously

  685. outraged

  686. and so he throws

  687. Joseph in prison.

  688. Sometimes the reward

  689. for a godly life

  690. leads to what?

  691. Persecution.

  692. Look to that.

  693. This morning in Nidri,

  694. Matthew 5, 8,

  695. Blessed are those

  696. who are persecuted

  697. for righteousness' sake,

  698. for theirs is the

  699. kingdom of heaven.

  700. When we stand up

  701. for the truth,

  702. don't always expect

  703. a pat on the back

  704. for your troubles,

  705. but expect persecution

  706. and opposition.

  707. People will revile

  708. and reject

  709. and slander

  710. and throw us

  711. into prison

  712. for our faith

  713. in Jesus Christ.

  714. And that's what's

  715. happened to Joseph.

  716. Man,

  717. this is a rollercoaster

  718. for him,

  719. isn't it?

  720. This is a rollercoaster

  721. for Joseph.

  722. He's in slavery,

  723. doesn't know

  724. what's going on,

  725. but then he rises

  726. through the ranks,

  727. God's hand is upon him

  728. and now he's back

  729. at the bottom

  730. of the pile again

  731. in such a brief

  732. amount of time.

  733. In fact,

  734. he's even in a worse

  735. scenario than he was

  736. when he began.

  737. I mean,

  738. prison would not

  739. have been a nice place

  740. back in the day

  741. in Egypt.

  742. It's not like it is

  743. in the UK

  744. if you've ever visited

  745. a prison full of TVs,

  746. running hot water,

  747. three square meals a day,

  748. even if the meals

  749. were not that nice.

  750. But this prison

  751. would have been dank,

  752. this prison would have

  753. been dark

  754. and full of hunger.

  755. Just flick ahead

  756. to Psalm 105,

  757. gives us a little insight

  758. into what Joseph

  759. must have been feeling

  760. as a psalmist

  761. commentates

  762. on his life.

  763. Psalm 105,

  764. 18 says this,

  765. his feet

  766. were hurt

  767. with fetters,

  768. talking about Joseph,

  769. his neck

  770. was put

  771. in a collar

  772. of iron.

  773. That wasn't a hotel

  774. he was in

  775. when he was in prison.

  776. Literally,

  777. he was chained

  778. by the neck

  779. and his feet.

  780. And the question is,

  781. again,

  782. as you're walking

  783. through the text

  784. and you're walking

  785. through Joseph's life,

  786. is what is God doing?

  787. How can this man

  788. be blessed by God

  789. after he had

  790. all those dreams?

  791. It seems like

  792. Joseph is a million miles

  793. away from fulfilling

  794. the dreams that God

  795. gave him all those years ago.

  796. It feels like God

  797. is not there.

  798. Where is he?

  799. Again,

  800. as we walk

  801. through the text

  802. and we walk

  803. through Joseph's life,

  804. it says in verse 21

  805. again,

  806. but the Lord

  807. was with Joseph.

  808. You see,

  809. this is all part

  810. of God's plan.

  811. You see,

  812. God is going to

  813. use this situation

  814. as we find out

  815. in chapter 40

  816. for Joseph

  817. to interpret

  818. the dreams

  819. of the cupbearer

  820. and baker.

  821. And the cupbearer

  822. will get reinstated

  823. at Pharaoh's palace.

  824. And when Pharaoh

  825. gets dreams later on,

  826. the cupbearer

  827. will recommend

  828. that Joseph

  829. interprets them.

  830. And then Joseph

  831. is going to interpret

  832. the dreams

  833. and be made

  834. a powerful figure.

  835. And his brothers

  836. will come along

  837. and he will feed them

  838. and he will save

  839. his family.

  840. You see,

  841. right now,

  842. he doesn't know

  843. what God is doing,

  844. but when you read

  845. a couple of chapters

  846. down the line,

  847. you know what God

  848. is doing.

  849. God hasn't abandoned

  850. his servant Joseph

  851. even though he's in prison.

  852. God is sovereign

  853. and God is working

  854. behind the scenes.

  855. The question is,

  856. as I was thinking

  857. through this,

  858. why does Joseph

  859. have to go through

  860. these dark times

  861. to get there though?

  862. Why couldn't just

  863. God on his

  864. bing, bing, bang thing

  865. and just got him

  866. straight to Pharaoh

  867. instead of going

  868. through the prison stuff?

  869. Well, God is preparing

  870. Joseph for the future.

  871. God is going to use

  872. these circumstances

  873. to refine his character

  874. back to Psalm 105

  875. briefly.

  876. The psalmist gives us

  877. a bit more insight

  878. in verse 18 and 19.

  879. He says,

  880. his feet were hurt

  881. with fetters,

  882. his neck was put

  883. in a collar of iron

  884. until what he had said

  885. had said come to pass.

  886. The word of the Lord

  887. tested him.

  888. It's interesting,

  889. isn't it?

  890. His feet were hurt,

  891. he was in collar

  892. of iron

  893. until what he had said

  894. come to pass.

  895. The word of the Lord

  896. tested him.

  897. You see,

  898. God was preparing

  899. Joseph for the future

  900. through this time

  901. of suffering.

  902. He was refining

  903. his character.

  904. I mean,

  905. remember,

  906. although Joseph

  907. was a man of integrity

  908. in Pharaoh's life,

  909. sorry,

  910. in Potiphar's,

  911. he was a man of integrity

  912. in Potiphar's house.

  913. Remember that Joseph

  914. was cocky.

  915. Remember that Joseph

  916. was an arrogant young man

  917. as we see earlier

  918. in Genesis.

  919. That's what got

  920. sort of into slavery

  921. in the first place.

  922. His brothers

  923. didn't like his attitude.

  924. Yes,

  925. they were jealous of him

  926. but he didn't help things,

  927. did he?

  928. And so God wanted

  929. to humble him,

  930. God wanted to test him

  931. and God wanted to change him

  932. so he was ready

  933. for the future.

  934. That's the same

  935. for us today,

  936. isn't it?

  937. God always uses

  938. suffering

  939. to humble us

  940. and to make us

  941. more like Christ.

  942. We get this image

  943. in 1 Peter 1

    1 Peter 1:6

  944. verses 6 and 7

  945. where Peter writes this,

  946. In this you rejoice,

  947. though now for a little while

  948. if necessary

  949. you've been grieved

  950. by various trials,

  951. so that the tested

  952. genuineness of your faith,

  953. more precious than gold

  954. that perishes

  955. though it is tested by fire,

  956. may be found to result

  957. in praise

  958. and glory

  959. and honour

  960. of the revelation

  961. of Jesus Christ.

  962. In other words,

  963. during times of suffering,

  964. God refines us

  965. like gold.

  966. If you know anything

  967. about the process

  968. of refining gold,

  969. it goes like this,

  970. they get the gold,

  971. they put it in a special pot

  972. called a crucible

  973. and they heat it up

  974. to a very hot temperature

  975. and what happens

  976. is that the heat

  977. melts everything

  978. but it brings the impurities

  979. to the top

  980. and the goldsmith

  981. can wipe away

  982. what's called the dross,

  983. the impurities at the top.

  984. They let it cool down

  985. and they do it again,

  986. they heat it up

  987. to a higher temperature

  988. and the dross comes

  989. and they wipe it away.

  990. And they keep on doing it

  991. until the goldsmith

  992. can see his face

  993. in the actual gold

  994. until it's nice and shiny

  995. like it has in your rings

  996. and your jewellery.

  997. That's what happens

  998. to us, isn't it?

  999. It's the heat

1000. that gets the impurities out

  1001. and it's the heat

  1002. of suffering

  1003. that humbles us

  1004. and changes us.

  1005. What does it do?

1006. It helps us to cling

  1007. to Christ more clearly.

  1008. It helps us

  1009. to not be proud.

  1010. It shows us

  1011. our sinful hearts.

  1012. It changes us,

  1013. doesn't it,

  1014. those times of difficulty

  1015. as the Lord

  1016. walks with us.

1017. Now let me be clear,

  1018. I don't want to be trite

  1019. about people's sufferings

  1020. this evening.

1021. Some of us may be

  1022. going through

  1023. very, very difficult times.

  1024. But in all things

  1025. we need to know

1026. that God is in control

  1027. and that he's working

  1028. for our good

  1029. and his glory.

1030. He is our heavenly Father.

  1031. Remember,

  1032. he's our heavenly Father

1033. who wants good for us.

  1034. He's not a cruel God.

  1035. He's not a distant God.

  1036. He's a God who is good.

  1037. He's a God who is loving.

  1038. He's a God who is wise.

  1039. And he knows

  1040. what he's doing

  1041. in every season

  1042. of our lives.

  1043. And the question

  1044. for us this evening

  1045. is this,

1046. will we be like Joseph

  1047. who trusts the Lord

  1048. through these difficult times

  1049. and is refined

  1050. in his character?

1051. Or will we grow bitter

  1052. with the circumstances

1053. that we face in life?

  1054. You see,

1055. Joseph is an example again

  1056. of what we do

1057. when we go through suffering.

  1058. We get bitter

  1059. with his surroundings

  1060. but he stayed faithful.

1061. He trusted in the Lord

  1062. and his timing.

  1063. I mean,

  1064. he was in prison

  1065. for a long time

  1066. and I want us

  1067. to understand that.

  1068. Even after he interpreted

  1069. his fellow prisoners' dreams

  1070. he had to wait

  1071. another two years

  1072. until he got out.

  1073. Two years in prison,

  1074. can you imagine that?

1075. I struggle with one day

  1076. of suffering

  1077. yet alone two years

  1078. in prison.

  1079. Joseph asked the cupbearer

  1080. to remember him,

1081. it says in chapter 40,

1082. after he helped him out.

  1083. What did he do?

  1084. Did he remember him?

  1085. Look at verse 23

  1086. of chapter 40.

  1087. Yet the chief cupbearer

  1088. did not remember Joseph

  1089. but he forgot him.

  1090. He forgot him.

  1091. And yet Joseph knew

  1092. that although everyone else

  1093. had abandoned him,

  1094. the Lord had not.

1095. He knew from his father Jacob

1096. that God does not leave

  1097. his people.

  1098. He knew that God

  1099. was a God

  1100. who is faithful

  1101. to his people.

1102. And when we go through

  1103. times of suffering,

1104. we need to know that

  1105. as well,

  1106. don't we?

  1107. You see,

  1108. as Christians,

  1109. we need to know

  1110. that God works

  1111. on a bigger canvas.

  1112. In a bigger canvas

  1113. that is way bigger

  1114. than our lives.

  1115. You see,

  1116. when we suffer,

  1117. we can only see

  1118. the small ground level,

  1119. can't we?

  1120. But God,

1121. God can see into eternity.

  1122. It's a little bit like

  1123. going on a journey

  1124. by a boat.

  1125. You're sailing along

  1126. on the waters

1127. and a fog hits you.

  1128. And you can't see

  1129. the way forward.

  1130. That's what it's like

  1131. during suffering,

  1132. isn't it?

  1133. We cannot see

  1134. what's going on.

  1135. We don't know

  1136. what's happening.

  1137. We don't know

  1138. where God is.

  1139. We can't understand

  1140. the suffering we're facing

  1141. and how God

  1142. could be working.

  1143. Life seems all over

  1144. the place.

  1145. But the thing is,

  1146. if you're flying

  1147. on a plane

  1148. above the fog,

  1149. then you can see

  1150. exactly where you're going.

  1151. And that's like God.

  1152. He knows the future

1153. and so we can trust

  1154. our lives

  1155. into his hands

  1156. no matter what

  1157. the circumstances are.

  1158. And when we trust

  1159. in God's total

  1160. sovereign care,

  1161. we find comfort

  1162. in the middle

  1163. of life's difficulties.

  1164. I hope to say

  1165. it's easy.

  1166. It never is.

1167. We always have to battle

  1168. to get there.

  1169. We have to know

  1170. that God is

  1171. in control

  1172. and totally trustworthy.

  1173. We have to know

  1174. that God

  1175. is a God

  1176. who never leaves

  1177. his people

  1178. nor forsakes

  1179. his people.

  1180. We don't know

  1181. what the future

  1182. holds, do we?

  1183. But we know

  1184. who holds the future.

  1185. And God is

  1186. totally dependable,

  1187. utterly trustworthy,

  1188. perfectly good

  1189. and totally

  1190. in control

  1191. over all things.

  1192. When we get

  1193. to the end

  1194. of our lives

  1195. and we look back

  1196. on our life,

  1197. we will see

  1198. God's hand

  1199. on every moment.

  1200. Guaranteed.

  1201. Do you know

  1202. where we can look

  1203. when we're doubting

  1204. these things?

  1205. When we're doubting

  1206. God's goodness

  1207. and his wisdom

  1208. and his sovereignty?

  1209. When we feel

  1210. that life is all

  1211. over the place

  1212. and God is no

  1213. longer with us?

1214. All we have to do

  1215. is look up

  1216. at the cross.

1217. All we have to do

  1218. is look

  1219. at Jesus Christ.

  1220. You see,

  1221. Jesus was in

  1222. the darkest place

  1223. in history

  1224. as he hung

  1225. on the cross.

  1226. He was abandoned

  1227. by his friends,

  1228. he had all the

  1229. dark forces

  1230. of the world

  1231. unleashed against him

1232. and as he hung there

  1233. he shouted,

  1234. my God,

  1235. my God,

  1236. why have you

  1237. forsaken me?

1238. He was at death's doors.

1239. He was in the darkest

  1240. place.

  1241. Even God had

  1242. turned his back

  1243. on him.

  1244. But the good news

  1245. is that

  1246. he was forsaken

  1247. so that no matter

  1248. how we feel

  1249. about our relationship

  1250. with God

  1251. or the circumstances

  1252. we're going through

  1253. we can know

  1254. that we never,

  1255. ever,

  1256. ever

  1257. will be separated

  1258. from the love

  1259. of God

  1260. in Christ Jesus.

  1261. Amen?

  1262. Let's finish

  1263. by just reading

  1264. Romans 8 together.

  1265. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:34

  1266. verse 34.

  1267. It's a brilliant

  1268. truth in this passage.

  1269. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:34

  1270. verse 34.

  1271. Who is to condemn?

1272. Christ Jesus is the one

  1273. who died,

  1274. more than that,

  1275. who was raised.

1276. Who is at the right

  1277. hand of God,

  1278. who indeed is interceding

  1279. for us?

  1280. Who shall separate us

1281. from the love of Christ?

  1282. Shall tribulation

  1283. or distress

  1284. or persecution

  1285. or famine

  1286. or nakedness

  1287. or danger

  1288. or sword,

  1289. as it is written,

  1290. for your sake

  1291. we are being killed

  1292. all the day long.

  1293. We are regarded

1294. as sheep to be slaughtered.

1295. Now in all these things

1296. we are more than conquerors

1297. through him who loved us.

1298. For I'm sure that neither death

  1299. nor life

  1300. nor angels

  1301. nor rulers

  1302. nor things present

  1303. nor things to come

  1304. nor powers

  1305. nor heights

  1306. nor depth

  1307. nor anything else

  1308. nor creation

1309. will be able to separate us

1310. from the love of God

1311. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1312. Sometimes life

  1313. does not make sense.

  1314. Sometimes our heads

  1315. are battered.

  1316. Sometimes we feel

  1317. all over the place.

  1318. But in those times

  1319. of suffering

  1320. we must come back

  1321. to the cross

  1322. and remember Jesus.

  1323. He is our hope

1324. in the day of trouble

  1325. because He was forsaken

1326. so that we will never

  1327. be forsaken again.

  1328. Life is difficult

  1329. but the cross proves

  1330. that,

  1331. this,

  1332. that God

  1333. is always

  1334. with His people.

  1335. Amen?

  1336. Shall we pray together?

  1337. Lord God,

  1338. we know that

  1339. there's many troubles

1340. in life that we face.

  1341. many difficulties,

  1342. many ups and downs.

1343. Thank you that you are

  1344. the God

  1345. who is always

  1346. with His people.

  1347. We see this

1348. in the life of Joseph

1349. as you walk beside him

  1350. and lead him

  1351. through slavery

  1352. and prison.

  1353. Lord,

  1354. I pray for anyone

  1355. who's maybe

  1356. going through

  1357. a difficult time

  1358. at the moment

  1359. for whatever reason,

  1360. maybe there's small

  1361. things going on,

  1362. maybe there's big things,

  1363. feeling confused

  1364. about the future,

  1365. Lord.

1366. I pray that they would know

1367. that you are with them

  1368. this evening,

  1369. you are leading

  1370. and guiding them.

  1371. I pray for those

  1372. who might be going

  1373. through suffering,

  1374. Lord,

  1375. that although it's difficult

  1376. that you might continue

  1377. to refine people's characters.

  1378. I pray for those

  1379. maybe who are having

1380. a good time at the moment,

1381. maybe feel full of joy,

1382. don't feel any of this

  1383. suffering or difficulty.

  1384. I pray when suffering

  1385. comes that they might

  1386. be like Joseph

  1387. and trust in you.

1388. Thank you for the cross

1389. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  1390. that reminds us

  1391. that he was forsaken

1392. so that we might not

  1393. be forsaken again.

1394. Help us to trust in Christ.

  1395. Always remember that

1396. he is good and loving

  1397. and wise.

  1398. We are his children

1399. and he never puts us

  1400. through anything

  1401. unnecessary.

  1402. Lord,

  1403. we need your help

1404. because we can't do this

  1405. by ourselves,

  1406. so send your spirit

1407. to lead and guide us.

  1408. In Jesus' name,

  1409. Amen.
