  1. Good evening. Thank you for the opportunity to come back. It's been a while, I think,

  2. since I was at Brunsfield, but it's great to be back here. I'm in college with Graham,

  3. so I see Graham quite a bit. That's okay on some days. I don't know what kind of mood

  4. Graham's in, you know, depending on how much coffee he's had on the way in in the morning.

  5. The story of Joseph is, I think, in terms of the Old Testament ones, probably the one

  6. that had the biggest impact on me as a young Christian. I remember when I became a Christian

  7. when I was 17, and I was probably quite a confused Christian. I remember my stepmom giving me

  8. a copy of R.T. Kendall's book, God Meant It For Good, and she said to me, go away and read

  9. that. And she says, I think that that might solve some of your difficulties. And it certainly

  10. did, because I had lots of doubts about how God could deal with difficult situations and

  11. turn them around. I think sometimes the story of Joseph is helpful, just as you actually

  12. try to live as a human being on the planet. And to be honest with you, there's so much

  13. within it. And it's a helpful story. And also, you see Jesus almost on every page. It really

  14. points forward to Jesus as a Savior, a Messiah story coming out of the Joseph story, which is

  15. tremendous. But I thought that this evening, really, by way of introduction, rather than

  16. telling you about how much impact it had on me, I want to introduce you to a guy called

  17. Jim. My years prior to working and coming to work as a pastor were spent working for Bethany

  18. Christian Trust. I worked for 14 and a half years for Bethany Christian Trust, particularly

  19. working with addicts, those recovering from drug, alcohol, gambling problems. And as you can

  20. imagine, with that kind of lifestyle comes convictions. So probably about 85 to 90% of

  21. the guys I worked with were convicts or were ex-convicts or were waiting on a conviction case.

  22. Jim's case, though, was something slightly different. One night, he and I were chatting, and it was

  23. late at night, and he confessed to me that he had committed a crime. And it was one that he'd

  24. never been caught for. It was one that he felt extremely guilty about. It would cause him

  25. sleepless nights. And often when the police would arrive at the hostel door, which happened quite a

  26. bit when you're working with 17 guys who have charges waiting, he would wonder if this was his time up.

  27. Is this when I'm going to be found out? In fact, it wasn't uncommon to see guys jumping out their

  28. bedroom windows and diving out the back door, even if they hadn't done anything wrong.

  29. The feeling of guilt, often, I don't think it's just the criminal fraternity, to be honest. I don't

  30. know about you, but even when I'm driving down the road and I see a police car and I know I'm doing

  31. the right speed, there's that instant look down and going, am I guilty? But for Jim, that feeling was

  32. real, he had committed a crime and one that would have put him in prison, or should have put him in

  33. prison. And often he and I would discuss, you know, what would it be like if he was to be found out?

  34. Maybe it would be better for him to go and confess. Maybe that would at least remove the constant

  35. feeling of having to look over his shoulder every time he stepped out the front door.

  36. Would it be better if he felt like he could pay for this crime that he committed?

  37. I'm not going to tell you the ending of the story. Jim's no longer with us.

  38. But it had a big impact on me watching somebody in the middle of that kind of guilt,

  39. wondering if the next knock on the door was going to be the one that would bring his whole world

  40. tumbling around about him. The passage that Alistair read so well to us, thank you Alistair for reading

  41. that, it was a long passage, you did well with that. I'm glad I didn't have to do it.

  42. Joseph's brothers have lived in a similar position to my friend Jim. It's probably about 22 years,

  43. at best estimates, it's probably about 22 years since they've sold Joseph, since he's gone to Egypt.

  44. So that's 22 years since they've committed a crime that they've never been caught for.

  45. A crime that only they know about.

  46. A crime that I think they feel guilty about.

  47. And as Alistair read that passage, you'll have seen this whole web of lies starts to fall down.

  48. The title you gave me for the sermon was An Examination.

  49. And boy, oh boy, are the brothers about to get a tough examination about their life.

  50. They're about to be exposed, or the beginning of their exposure for their wrongdoing is starting

  51. in Genesis chapter 42.

    Genesis 42 chapter mention

  52. So I thought that we might look through this passage and look at the five family meetings that go on.

  53. I don't know if you come from a family where you have family meetings.

  54. Our family, they were always really short. Whatever my dad said went.

  55. So that was the way it was.

  56. But the first family meeting is one of crisis, isn't it?

  57. And I think it's probably hard for us to, today in this country,

  58. that some I'm sure maybe experience hunger,

  59. but it's not a countrywide famine that we're living in.

  60. In this situation, they are facing a huge famine.

  61. A huge famine.

  62. In fact, the final verse of chapter 41, what we read, it says that the famine is severe

  63. in all the world.

  64. In all the world.

  65. So this family meeting is convened.

  66. They are in crisis point.

  67. And if you're in crisis point and there's a severe famine,

  68. it's not a surprise, I suppose, that word reaches Jacob

  69. that in Egypt there is an answer.

  70. There is an answer to his problems.

  71. There's an answer to the famine.

  72. But, but, although he is unaware,

  73. there is also an answer to Jacob's grief.

  74. That will come in a few chapters' time.

  75. But there's lots of answers in Egypt that are about to be unfolded

  76. over the course of the next few chapters that you'll look at.

  77. It says that Jacob had decided, in chapter 37 of Genesis,

  78. to take his mourning to the grave.

  79. And actually, if you look at the impact in Jacob's life of his relationship with God,

  80. it is severely impacted.

  81. If you look at Jacob as a young man, getting these visions, wrestling,

  82. amazing things happening to him.

  83. And then you look at Jacob now,

  84. and we'll look at him a little bit towards the end of the chapter this evening.

  85. Because he has made a decision to not leave his grieving behind,

  86. to not get on with his life,

  87. to live in the middle of the problem,

  88. his relationship with God has been drastically, drastically affected.

  89. And he isn't aware that over the next few chapters,

  90. there is going to be an amazing reunion, of course,

  91. that's going to happen.

  92. The brothers, though, they're not so in the dark, are they?

  93. They have this history.

  94. They're aware that they've sold Joseph.

  95. They've sold him to the Ishmaelite traders,

  96. who are on the way to trade there,

  97. when they decided to palm Joseph off.

  98. That is going to cause some apprehension about going to Egypt.

  99. If you know that what you have done

  100. is betrayed your own flesh and blood.

  101. And so I would think that if you picture the horror

  102. on the brothers' faces,

  103. as Jacob calls this family meeting together,

  104. and he informs them that,

  105. listen guys, we are in crisis point.

  106. The famine is severe in all the world.

  107. We're in big trouble here.

  108. We aren't going to last out.

  109. We don't have enough provision of ourselves

  110. that we can kind of sit tight and make it through.

  111. The answer to our problems

  112. lies in Egypt, boys.

  113. There's grain there.

  114. And I think that Jacob's question

  115. in the very first verse that we read

  116. is really one that we can highlight this evening.

  117. It's a really insightful thing.

  118. Because I actually think that Jacob's suspicions are aroused.

  119. I wonder if he's always had some suspicion

  120. about the brothers.

  121. And he says this,

  122. why do you keep looking at each other?

  123. Here we are in the middle of a famine.

  124. We've not got enough food.

  125. We've not got enough food.

  126. We've not got enough seed to grow things with.

  127. We're just not going to make it.

  128. I've told you what we need to do.

  129. And then in the middle of this family meeting,

  130. there's just silence

  131. as the brothers kind of cast,

  132. shifting glances at one another.

  133. You know, that knowing look

  134. when you hold a secret in a group of friends

  135. that somebody doesn't know about.

  136. Were Jacob's suspicions aroused?

  137. Why do you keep looking at each other?

  138. I mean, after all, we know,

  139. we know that in previous chapters,

  140. we're told about the suspect character of these boys.

  141. Chapter 38 goes through the suspect character

  142. of one of them in particular.

  143. These guys are no good guys.

  144. I'm sure Jacob as a father

  145. must have looked at them and thought,

  146. I wonder, I just wonder

  147. what really went on between them and Joseph.

  148. He knew they didn't like him.

  149. But we know the story from the beginning to the end.

  150. Jacob's in the middle of it here.

  151. We know what's really going on.

  152. We know why they're looking at each other.

  153. The past has now got a potential

  154. to catch up with these boys.

  155. They know that they've sold Joseph as a slave.

  156. They know that it's most likely

  157. that he is in Egypt,

  158. that he's ended up there.

  159. And therefore,

  160. they now risk exposure.

  161. As they travel into Egypt,

  162. and as they stare into the face

  163. of every Egyptian slave,

  164. they'll be wondering and asking the question,

  165. is that Joseph?

  166. Is that Joseph's face staring back at us?

  167. And that's why,

  168. that's why,

  169. they're looking at each other.

  170. unspoken words between them.

  171. Perhaps a terror,

  172. as they realize now

  173. the severity of their situation,

  174. leaves them with little choice

  175. but to head down to Egypt

  176. and to face their fears.

  177. And I actually think also

  178. that they're hoping

  179. as they look from one another

  180. that one of them might just be able

  181. to come up with a plan

  182. that means they don't have to go there.

  183. each knowing the weight of guilt

  184. that the other one bears.

  185. Only they understand

  186. each other's plight.

  187. They don't know though, do they,

  188. that this is all God ordained.

  189. This family meeting here,

  190. this point we get to

  191. in the story of Joseph

  192. in the book of Genesis,

  193. is God ordained.

  194. God has ordained the famine

  195. for a purpose.

  196. He's going to use this famine

  197. not just to save the lives of many

  198. as Joseph will say

  199. in a later chapter,

  200. but he's also ordained this family

  201. to reunite the broken relationships,

  202. to give the offer of forgiveness

  203. and true repentance

  204. that these brothers really need.

  205. That is going to come later.

  206. But for now,

  207. they must endure the ordeal

  208. of a 250 to 300 mile journey to Egypt

  209. to have any possible chance

  210. of experiencing salvation.

  211. because God has left them

  212. with no choice

  213. but to go.

  214. God has left them

  215. with no choice

  216. but to go.

  217. And I do think

  218. that that is

  219. one of the first challenges

  220. for us this evening.

  221. those moments

  222. where you wonder

  223. why calamity has happened,

  224. why tragedy has happened,

  225. why you're going through tough time,

  226. why you're suffering.

  227. And we all ask these questions

  228. and we accuse God

  229. and we say,

  230. how could you let this happen?

  231. Why are you doing this to me?

  232. Perhaps you might say something like,

  233. I've served you

  234. and I've done this

  235. and I'm following you here

  236. and yet you let this happen.

  237. Of course,

  238. we know the brothers can't say that

  239. because they're of suspect character.

  240. But who in this room tonight

  241. doesn't have suspect character

  242. about them?

  243. Doesn't have little things

  244. that you wouldn't want

  245. other people to find out about?

  246. What choice do you have

  247. in those moments of suffering

  248. that are,

  249. whether we like it or not,

  250. God-ordained?

  251. I'm not saying I understand

  252. why that is the case.

  253. I'm not saying I understand

  254. why the people of Nepal

  255. are suffering the way they are.

  256. I don't think we'll ever understand that.

  257. But to say that God

  258. has been caught by surprise

  259. by those things that have happened

  260. is to doubt His sovereignty.

  261. To doubt His sovereignty

  262. is to say that God isn't big enough.

  263. To say that God isn't big enough

  264. opens a whole lot more problems for you.

  265. Is His salvation enough?

  266. Is that complete enough?

  267. God is sovereign.

  268. God ordains that suffering will come.

  269. Do we understand why?

  270. No.

  271. But when we read stories like this,

  272. we begin to see

  273. that we can trust God

  274. to be in control

  275. no matter how tough

  276. the situation brings.

  277. It's tough.

  278. The Christian life is tough.

  279. I was preaching

  280. from Philippians 3 this morning

  281. where Paul basically just says that.

  282. I expect that the suffering

  283. of a Christian life

  284. is just a given.

  285. It's going to happen.

  286. In fact, Paul says,

  287. I invite it

  288. because that way

  289. I get to experience

  290. and empathize with Christ

  291. in some way.

  292. God has ordained this famine

  293. for a purpose.

  294. This famine isn't about

  295. punishment

  296. of the brothers

  297. because it's worldwide, remember.

  298. It's not just their sin

  299. that he's been talking about.

  300. It's not just their sin

  301. that he's been talking about here.

  302. This famine will bring about

  303. an amazing reconciliation

  304. between Joseph

  305. and his family.

  306. And so it can often be

  307. in our lives

  308. that those things

  309. that we go through,

  310. I think we should often

  311. ask the question,

  312. how can I be reconciled

  313. to Jesus

  314. through this circumstance,

  315. the author,

  316. the perfecter of my faith,

  317. when I'm going through

  318. a tough time?

  319. What are the things

  320. I think about Jesus?

  321. What are the things

  322. I say about him

  323. in these moments?

  324. I believe these times

  325. are often sent

  326. to reconcile us to God.

  327. So that's the first bit.

  328. The family meeting part one

  329. is done.

  330. The family meeting part one

  331. is done

  332. and we're going to come

  333. to our next part in there.

  334. Family meeting part two.

  335. The reunion.

  336. The reunion.

  337. The brothers,

  338. they embark on this

  339. arduous journey

  340. unsure of what's going

  341. to meet them at the end.

  342. Not only do they fear

  343. who they might meet,

  344. but they've also got

  345. the fear of being

  346. foreigners in a strange land

  347. where they might not be wanted.

  348. And it's not long

  349. into this scene

  350. as Alistair read

  351. through this chapter

  352. with us

  353. that we look in

  354. on the scene

  355. of their sternest test

  356. where the real examination

  357. begins.

  358. Of course for them

  359. it's a family meeting

  360. that they're actually

  361. unaware of.

  362. And the first thing

  363. that happens

  364. in this

  365. is that Joseph's dream

  366. is fulfilled.

  367. The dream that had caused

  368. all the problems

  369. in the first place.

  370. And as the brothers

  371. arrive at Joseph

  372. though they don't know

  373. who it is,

  374. they bow down

  375. and they worship him.

  376. Just as Joseph

  377. predicted would happen.

  378. But it is a tough meeting.

  379. If the brothers

  380. have aroused

  381. suspicion of Jacob

  382. back home,

  383. they've now aroused

  384. the suspicions

  385. of the man

  386. they needed the most

  387. in this whole process.

  388. And I think

  389. there's two things

  390. that we have to actually

  391. consider

  392. as we look through

  393. this next section.

  394. Firstly,

  395. we have to look at

  396. the motivation

  397. of Joseph's words.

  398. And then we have to think

  399. about how the brothers

  400. respond

  401. as they experience

  402. what Joseph

  403. has experienced

  404. for parts of his

  405. 22 years in Egypt.

  406. So let's first

  407. look at Joseph's

  408. motives.

  409. Joseph isn't willing

  410. to reveal himself

  411. yet to his brothers.

  412. And so he speaks

  413. harshly to them

  414. it says

  415. from verses 7

  416. through to 21

  417. we see this

  418. fascinating encounter

  419. within this

  420. family meeting.

  421. And the question

  422. you first ask

  423. is well

  424. is Joseph

  425. out for revenge

  426. here?

  427. Is he out

  428. for revenge

  429. on his brothers

  430. with a false

  431. accusation

  432. and an imprisonment?

  433. Is this

  434. finally the moment

  435. that he has waited

  436. 22 years for?

  437. I don't think

  438. this theory

  439. is plausible

  440. though

  441. when you consider

  442. later chapters

  443. in Genesis

  444. like Genesis 45

  445. and Genesis 50

  446. where Joseph

  447. when he is reunited

  448. reassures his brothers

  449. that he's witnessed

  450. God's hand

  451. in all that's happened

  452. despite

  453. the consequence

  454. of their sin

  455. despite the circumstances

  456. that he had to live

  457. through because of it.

  458. And in actual fact

  459. in the same way

  460. that the brothers

  461. are being examined

  462. here in this chapter

  463. so too

  464. is Joseph.

  465. Joseph

  466. he is under

  467. huge examination

  468. here.

  469. Who could blame him

  470. if he used

  471. the power

  472. that he now has

  473. to bring about

  474. revenge?

  475. I mean you've all

  476. had it haven't you?

  477. Where somebody

  478. has noised you up

  479. and you're thinking

  480. how am I going

  481. to get back

  482. at that person?

  483. Okay well

  484. I'll admit

  485. I have okay

  486. maybe you haven't

  487. but I have

  488. I have

  489. I have often

  490. felt

  491. revengeful thoughts

  492. in my heart

  493. over people

  494. who I perceive

  495. have wronged me.

  496. And if given

  497. an opportunity

  498. where I may have

  499. had power

  500. in this situation

  501. I cannot tell you

  502. what I would have done

  503. would have been godly.

  504. Abraham Lincoln

  505. says this

  506. he says

  507. nearly all men

  508. can stand adversity

  509. but if you want

  510. to test a man's

  511. character

  512. give him power.

  513. And I think

  514. that's really true.

  515. That is so true.

  516. If you have

  517. opportunities

  518. to have power

  519. over somebody

  520. very often

  521. the human will

  522. that comes out

  523. is one

  524. to dominate somebody.

  525. And you know

  526. what I think about

  527. when I was reading

  528. this story here

  529. as Joseph does

  530. something different

  531. is that of Jesus

  532. when he has power

  533. over Judah

  534. on the night

  535. of the last supper

  536. he knows

  537. who's going to

  538. betray him

  539. and it says

  540. that Jesus

  541. has power

  542. over everything

  543. it says that God

  544. has given him

  545. power over everything

  546. and in humility

  547. Jesus kneels down

  548. and washes

  549. his betrayer's feet.

  550. If you want to

  551. test a man's

  552. character

  553. give him power

  554. and Jesus'

  555. example in this

  556. situation

  557. is one that

  558. we must look to

  559. to be humble

  560. in that moment

  561. and say

  562. Lord I need you

  563. to help me here

  564. I need your wisdom

  565. in this situation

  566. because humanly

  567. speaking

  568. I want to do

  569. that person in

  570. I want to do

  571. them harm

  572. these Old Testament

  573. stories are great

  574. but Jesus'

  575. example is the

  576. best there

  577. that's real

  578. humility

  579. it's guaranteed

  580. that there was

  581. nothing of humanity

  582. in Jesus'

  583. response in that way

  584. Joseph there might

  585. have been

  586. he's human

  587. he's got feelings

  588. but in Jesus

  589. we have our

  590. perfect example

  591. of a situation

  592. where you may

  593. have power

  594. over somebody

  595. Joseph has

  596. power

  597. but Joseph

  598. has

  599. experienced

  600. God's

  601. blessing

  602. in his

  603. adversity

  604. he's come

  605. from the

  606. arrogant

  607. young

  608. dreamer

  609. to a man

  610. with integrity

  611. a man of

  612. wisdom

  613. of God

  614. and so

  615. he passes

  616. his examination

  617. because he

  618. recognizes that

  619. what God is

  620. doing through

  621. him

  622. is for his

  623. brothers

  624. it's for this

  625. reunion that's

  626. going to come

  627. because Joseph

  628. could have

  629. revealed himself

  630. to his brothers

  631. straight away

  632. couldn't he

  633. Matthew Henry

  634. suggests in his

  635. commentary

  636. that given

  637. Joseph's status

  638. now in Egypt

  639. he must have

  640. had plenty of

  641. money

  642. he must have

  643. had access

  644. to horses

  645. and chariots

  646. we know that

  647. the brothers

  648. have made a

  649. 250 to 300

  650. mile journey

  651. themselves

  652. that would have

  653. been nothing

  654. for a man

  655. in Joseph's

  656. position

  657. he could have

  658. trotted off

  659. to Canaan

  660. at any point

  661. and revealed

  662. himself to his

  663. brothers

  664. it's speculation

  665. I know to say

  666. that we know

  667. that he saw

  668. God's hand

  669. in it

  670. but God

  671. ordains this

  672. meeting to

  673. happen

  674. and not for

  675. Joseph to

  676. run off

  677. and make

  678. himself known

  679. and again it's

  680. interesting when you

  681. look through the

  682. life of Joseph

  683. you remember

  684. when he interprets

  685. one of the

  686. dreams

  687. he says

  688. remember me

  689. today when you

  690. come into

  691. Pharaoh's

  692. household

  693. it's that thing

  694. that Joseph

  695. constantly wanted

  696. to run on

  697. ahead

  698. and yet here

  699. you see

  700. something

  701. different

  702. Joseph is

  703. older

  704. and wiser

  705. and has

  706. recognised

  707. that it's

  708. God's

  709. timing

  710. and not

  711. his own

  712. that's

  713. important

  714. Joseph

  715. hasn't revealed

  716. himself

  717. because he

  718. has to

  719. see them

  720. come to

  721. true repentance

  722. and in some

  723. ways they

  724. have to

  725. experience

  726. perhaps a

  727. little bit

  728. of what

  729. Joseph

  730. experienced

  731. this is

  732. what Keith

  733. Krell

  734. the associate

  735. pastor of

  736. biblical

  737. exposition

  738. and Moody

  739. Institute

  740. says about

  741. what they

  742. experienced

  743. over verses

  744. 7 to 21

  745. and Joseph's

  746. treatment of

  747. them

  748. this is what

  749. he says

  750. I would also

  751. suggest that

  752. Joseph repeats

  753. with his

  754. brothers the

  755. exact scene

  756. that has

  757. happened to

  758. him 22

  759. years earlier

  760. in chapter

  761. 37 verse

  762. 2 Joseph

  763. brought his

  764. father a bad

  765. report about

  766. his brothers

  767. in 37

  768. 14 to 17

  769. Jacob sent

  770. Joseph on a

  771. mission to

  772. find out where

  773. his brothers

  774. were and what

  775. they were doing

  776. when Joseph

  777. finds his

  778. brothers

  779. they're upset

  780. because no

  781. doubt they

  782. think he's

  783. spying on

  784. them for a

  785. second time

  786. reading between

  787. the lines it's

  788. likely that

  789. Joseph's brothers

  790. accused him of

  791. being both a

  792. spy and an

  793. ark

  794. now in an

  795. unusual turn of

  796. events Joseph

  797. accuses his

  798. brothers of

  799. being spies

  800. no doubt

  801. Joseph would

  802. have protested

  803. that he wasn't

  804. spying just as

  805. they now

  806. protest

  807. they would

  808. have answered

  809. him roughly

  810. and without

  811. any basis

  812. for their

  813. accusation

  814. just as

  815. Joseph now

  816. answers them

  817. they threw

  818. him into a

  819. pit just as

  820. Joseph now

  821. throws them

  822. into a

  823. dungeon

  824. the parallels

  825. between their

  826. treatment of

  827. Joseph and

  828. the treatment

  829. they're now

  830. receiving is a

  831. powerful stimulant

  832. to their

  833. sleeping

  834. consciences

  835. Joseph is

  836. doing all of

  837. this in the

  838. hope that his

  839. brothers will

  840. wake up to

  841. the nature of

  842. the actions

  843. he is hoping

  844. this treatment

  845. will make them

  846. come clean

  847. so the

  848. brothers at

  849. the end of

  850. this first

  851. family meeting

  852. with Joseph

  853. they're banged

  854. up for want

  855. of a better

  856. word

  857. and their

  858. examination

  859. will continue

  860. further in

  861. the confinements

  862. of a prison

  863. cell left to

  864. reflect that

  865. perhaps their

  866. actions of the

  867. past have

  868. finally caught

  869. up with them

  870. of course

  871. Joseph has

  872. also revealed

  873. an ulterior

  874. motive here

  875. in his request

  876. that the only

  877. way they can

  878. prove their

  879. innocence is to

  880. bring back the

  881. younger brother

  882. by the treatment

  883. of both Benjamin

  884. and ultimately

  885. of Jacob

  886. Joseph will be

  887. able to discern

  888. here if there

  889. has been a

  890. spiritual change

  891. in the brothers

  892. since they

  893. last met

  894. and so

  895. they're in

  896. prison for

  897. three days

  898. and at the

  899. end of

  900. these three

  901. days we've

  902. got the

  903. next part

  904. of our

  905. family meeting

  906. family meeting

  907. part three

  908. the solution

  909. Joseph opens

  910. this meeting

  911. with an

  912. extraordinary

  913. declaration

  914. he has

  915. explained what

  916. they must do

  917. now he

  918. wants to give

  919. them something

  920. more specific

  921. but before

  922. he does

  923. that he

  924. informs them

  925. that he

  926. fears God

  927. he fears

  928. God

  929. it's the

  930. first explicit

  931. mention of

  932. God in this

  933. chapter

  934. and I think

  935. that we can

  936. surmise that

  937. Joseph given

  938. his wisdom

  939. is probably

  940. aware that

  941. God is now

  942. working out

  943. his bigger

  944. plan

  945. and Joseph

  946. wants his

  947. brothers to be

  948. aware I

  949. think firstly

  950. that his

  951. actions aren't

  952. just of his

  953. own thinking

  954. it's not

  955. just some

  956. random

  957. Egyptian

  958. ruler here

  959. that's decided

  960. this is what's

  961. going to happen

  962. to these

  963. boys

  964. listen guys

  965. he says

  966. I fear

  967. God

  968. I fear

  969. your God

  970. and it's

  971. that that

  972. brings about

  973. a realization

  974. in the

  975. brothers

  976. their actions

  977. have caused

  978. or have led

  979. to the

  980. situation

  981. they now

  982. find themselves

  983. in

  984. they are

  985. now facing

  986. the crisis

  987. in life

  988. because of

  989. what they've

  990. done to

  991. Joseph

  992. and the

  993. full open

  994. and honest

  995. confession

  996. begins

  997. you remember

  998. this guy

  999. some of you

  1000. as well

  1001. some of you

  1002. as look

  1003. old enough

  1004. to remember

  1005. Columbo

  1006. I didn't have

  1007. a TV

  1008. growing up

  1009. and we

  1010. would get

  1011. crammed in

  1012. the family

  1013. car on a

  1014. Friday night

  1015. to go to my

  1016. uncle and

  1017. aunties and

  1018. watch a bit

  1019. of Columbo

  1020. so Columbo

  1021. was a

  1022. favourite

  1023. in our

  1024. house

  1025. Columbo

  1026. had this

  1027. incredible

  1028. way about

  1029. him

  1030. of just

  1031. asking one

  1032. more question

  1033. to the

  1034. point of

  1035. real frustration

  1036. with the

  1037. criminal

  1038. before all

  1039. of a sudden

  1040. those who

  1041. you thought

  1042. had got

  1043. away with

  1044. it would

  1045. open up

  1046. with a

  1047. full on

  1048. confession

  1049. of how

  1050. they did

  1051. it

  1052. where

  1053. they did

  1054. it

  1055. what

  1056. they did

  1057. it

  1058. with

  1059. and yes

  1060. just bang

  1061. me up

  1062. and take

  1063. me away

  1064. to jail

  1065. now in

  1066. my dealings

  1067. my 14

  1068. years of

  1069. dealing

  1070. with the

  1071. criminal

  1072. fraternity

  1073. I never

  1074. once

  1075. really had

  1076. anybody

  1077. in the

  1078. prison

  1079. cell

  1080. confessing

  1081. in that

  1082. way

  1083. but

  1084. Columbo

  1085. could do

  1086. it

  1087. and there's

  1088. the answer

  1089. maybe they

  1090. needed to

  1091. watch more

  1092. more cop shows

  1093. with Columbo

  1094. in it

  1095. the brothers

  1096. though

  1097. are met

  1098. with this

  1099. full on

  1100. force of

  1101. God

  1102. Joseph

  1103. I fear

  1104. God

  1105. and that's

  1106. why

  1107. I've made

  1108. these decisions

  1109. and that's

  1110. why

  1111. I'm asking

  1112. you to use

  1113. this as your

  1114. solution to the

  1115. problem to

  1116. confirm that

  1117. you are not

  1118. spies

  1119. sent to see

  1120. where our

  1121. land is

  1122. vulnerable

  1123. but

  1124. within that

  1125. fear of

  1126. God

  1127. brings hope

  1128. it's a

  1129. chance of

  1130. hope for

  1131. the brothers

  1132. Joseph's

  1133. confession that

  1134. he fears

  1135. God will

  1136. allow them

  1137. to see

  1138. that perhaps

  1139. there will

  1140. be an

  1141. opportunity

  1142. of compassion

  1143. here

  1144. there will

  1145. be an

  1146. opportunity

  1147. for grace

  1148. if God's

  1149. character

  1150. is one

  1151. that they

  1152. believe

  1153. Joseph

  1154. is the

  1155. Egyptian

  1156. if one

  1157. that the

  1158. Egyptian

  1159. Joseph

  1160. is aware

  1161. of

  1162. yes

  1163. their

  1164. past

  1165. has caught

  1166. up with

  1167. them

  1168. finally

  1169. but the

  1170. mention

  1171. of God

  1172. is what

  1173. they need

  1174. to hear

  1175. that though

  1176. they've

  1177. tried to

  1178. hide their

  1179. actions

  1180. from human

  1181. perception

  1182. God

  1183. God has

  1184. been aware

  1185. of it

  1186. all along

  1187. and they

  1188. have lived

  1189. for 22

  1190. years

  1191. trying to

  1192. hide it

  1193. which sin

  1194. do you fear

  1195. being found

  1196. out for

  1197. because we

  1198. are not

  1199. unlike the

  1200. brothers here

  1201. simply

  1202. living as

  1203. I've

  1204. already

  1205. said

  1206. brings

  1207. about

  1208. guilt

  1209. it

  1210. will

  1211. friendships

  1212. betrayed

  1213. perhaps that

  1214. gossiping word

  1215. you uttered

  1216. that you

  1217. pray the

  1218. person

  1219. will never

  1220. hear about

  1221. maybe

  1222. that fiddling

  1223. of the

  1224. expenses

  1225. account

  1226. that you

  1227. hope

  1228. will remain

  1229. unnoticed

  1230. but what

  1231. the story

  1232. of Joseph

  1233. shows us

  1234. is

  1235. and the

  1236. story

  1237. of his

  1238. brothers

  1239. in a

  1240. sense

  1241. because

  1242. this is

  1243. really

  1244. the story

  1245. of Joseph's

  1246. brothers

  1247. here

  1248. it's

  1249. their

  1250. examination

  1251. here

  1252. it shows

  1253. us that

  1254. God sees

  1255. and knows

  1256. everything

  1257. and that

  1258. from human

  1259. perspectives

  1260. we may

  1261. think that

  1262. we've got

  1263. away with

  1264. it

  1265. and we

  1266. might well

  1267. get away

  1268. with the

  1269. sin for

  1270. many years

  1271. maybe until

  1272. the day

  1273. we face

  1274. God on

  1275. judgment

  1276. that is

  1277. the reality

  1278. that might

  1279. happen

  1280. but as

  1281. the brothers

  1282. remind us

  1283. here

  1284. we will

  1285. have to

  1286. make an

  1287. account

  1288. on judgment

  1289. day

  1290. for the

  1291. way that

  1292. we've

  1293. lived

  1294. in front

  1295. of a

  1296. God

  1297. who has

  1298. seen

  1299. it all

  1300. who has

  1301. known

  1302. it all

  1303. are there

  1304. dark

  1305. places

  1306. in your

  1307. life

  1308. that you're

  1309. holding

  1310. unconfessed

  1311. sin in

  1312. and what

  1313. is that

  1314. doing to

  1315. you on a

  1316. daily basis

  1317. as you

  1318. try to

  1319. live

  1320. for Jesus

  1321. Christ

  1322. confession

  1323. of sin

  1324. doesn't just

  1325. happen at

  1326. conversion

  1327. or shouldn't

  1328. just happen

  1329. at conversion

  1330. and yet

  1331. for a lot

  1332. of Christians

  1333. that is the

  1334. way it

  1335. works

  1336. are you

  1337. wondering why

  1338. you're not

  1339. connecting

  1340. with Christ

  1341. are you

  1342. wondering why

  1343. there's this

  1344. constant weight

  1345. on your

  1346. shoulders

  1347. what is that

  1348. sin that you

  1349. really worry

  1350. about the

  1351. person sitting

  1352. next to you

  1353. tonight

  1354. finding out

  1355. about

  1356. the one

  1357. that you

  1358. know

  1359. is damaging

  1360. the relationship

  1361. you have

  1362. with your

  1363. work

  1364. with your

  1365. church

  1366. family

  1367. with your

  1368. work

  1369. colleagues

  1370. with your

  1371. wife

  1372. with your

  1373. husband

  1374. with your

  1375. kids

  1376. I can

  1377. imagine

  1378. if you're

  1379. anything

  1380. like me

  1381. sometimes

  1382. there's dark

  1383. thoughts that

  1384. go through

  1385. our mind

  1386. and you

  1387. wonder how

  1388. on earth

  1389. can that

  1390. be

  1391. sin doesn't

  1392. make sense

  1393. in the life

  1394. of believers

  1395. it doesn't

  1396. apostle Paul

  1397. says you're

  1398. dead to sin

  1399. so why do

  1400. you end up

  1401. doing the

  1402. things

  1403. that we

  1404. don't want

  1405. to do

  1406. I would

  1407. say it's

  1408. better to

  1409. keep short

  1410. accounts

  1411. finding that

  1412. someone you

  1413. can trust

  1414. in your

  1415. church family

  1416. that you

  1417. know you

  1418. can go to

  1419. and talk

  1420. about this

  1421. sin with

  1422. and you

  1423. know the

  1424. reality of the

  1425. situation is

  1426. unconfessed

  1427. sin if it

  1428. remains that

  1429. way if you're

  1430. not a believer

  1431. tonight and

  1432. you have

  1433. unconfessed

  1434. sin when

  1435. you stand

  1436. before God

  1437. in judgment

  1438. that

  1439. unconfessed

  1440. sin

  1441. well it

  1442. will take

  1443. you to

  1444. hell

  1445. as a

  1446. Christian

  1447. you'll

  1448. stand before

  1449. God with

  1450. unconfessed

  1451. sin and

  1452. you'll have

  1453. nothing to

  1454. make an

  1455. account of

  1456. yourself for

  1457. in that

  1458. way

  1459. there is

  1460. hope

  1461. there is

  1462. hope

  1463. that if we

  1464. confess our

  1465. sins he's

  1466. faithful and

  1467. just to

  1468. forgive us

  1469. our sins

  1470. and cleanse

  1471. us from

  1472. all unrighteousness

  1473. what a great

  1474. verse that is

  1475. it's a promise

  1476. that we have

  1477. an offer

  1478. and perhaps

  1479. it's something

  1480. that we'd

  1481. be better

  1482. taking up

  1483. now sooner

  1484. rather than

  1485. later

  1486. family meeting

  1487. part four

  1488. I've not got

  1489. long to go

  1490. Joseph sends

  1491. them on the

  1492. way but he

  1493. initiates the

  1494. next part of

  1495. God's plan

  1496. he sends

  1497. them for

  1498. what they

  1499. came for

  1500. but he

  1501. sends them

  1502. back with a

  1503. full refund

  1504. of the

  1505. cost

  1506. and I

  1507. think it's

  1508. in this

  1509. discovery that

  1510. we finally have

  1511. the brothers

  1512. acknowledgement

  1513. that God

  1514. is at work

  1515. that he is

  1516. explicitly at

  1517. work

  1518. verse 28

  1519. it says

  1520. that their

  1521. hearts sank

  1522. what is this

  1523. that God

  1524. has done

  1525. to us

  1526. yes there's

  1527. been a

  1528. jailhouse

  1529. confession

  1530. there's

  1531. recognition

  1532. that they've

  1533. finally been

  1534. found out

  1535. the realisation

  1536. fully that

  1537. they are now

  1538. answerable to

  1539. God for

  1540. this

  1541. maybe

  1542. Joseph's

  1543. motivation was

  1544. to see if his

  1545. brothers could

  1546. still be bought

  1547. off with money

  1548. as they had

  1549. been with him

  1550. but I suggest

  1551. more appropriate

  1552. it was an act

  1553. of love

  1554. he knew

  1555. that they were

  1556. going to have

  1557. to return

  1558. that they were

  1559. going to have

  1560. to buy

  1561. more

  1562. and I

  1563. think he

  1564. knew that

  1565. given their

  1566. dealings he

  1567. would also

  1568. have known

  1569. that they

  1570. would have

  1571. felt and

  1572. been fearful

  1573. of accusation

  1574. of theft

  1575. whatever his

  1576. motivation in

  1577. this instance

  1578. God uses

  1579. elements of

  1580. grace and

  1581. fear to

  1582. bring about

  1583. a realisation

  1584. of their

  1585. guilt

  1586. and what I

  1587. was just

  1588. saying a few

  1589. moments ago

  1590. that is a

  1591. sign of the

  1592. Lord's

  1593. discipline in

  1594. our lives

  1595. that he

  1596. often uses

  1597. this combination

  1598. of grace

  1599. and fear

  1600. remember reading

  1601. a book by

  1602. Jackie Chan

  1603. not Jackie

  1604. Chan

  1605. I hope it

  1606. wasn't Jackie

  1607. Chan

  1608. maybe does he

  1609. write commentaries

  1610. I don't know

  1611. Francis Chan

  1612. where he talks

  1613. about you

  1614. shouldn't be

  1615. frightened about

  1616. preaching about

  1617. hell

  1618. because it

  1619. appears in

  1620. scripture the

  1621. reality is there

  1622. that if you

  1623. never come to

  1624. know Christ

  1625. hell is there

  1626. elements of

  1627. grace and

  1628. fear

  1629. well I think

  1630. that's okay

  1631. but there is

  1632. grace in this

  1633. situation and

  1634. that's how God

  1635. brings them to

  1636. this situation

  1637. it's a real

  1638. picture here

  1639. Isaiah 55

  1640. come and buy

  1641. without money

  1642. without cost

  1643. and Joseph

  1644. sent them on

  1645. the way saying

  1646. listen you've

  1647. got what you

  1648. needed without

  1649. money without

  1650. cost because I

  1651. know that you're

  1652. going to come

  1653. back to something

  1654. even greater

  1655. fear and grace

  1656. should bring us

  1657. to a place of

  1658. repentance in

  1659. our lives a

  1660. place of

  1661. dependence and

  1662. accountability on

  1663. God on the

  1664. work of Jesus

  1665. because that is

  1666. the only way

  1667. folks it's the

  1668. only way that

  1669. life can work

  1670. the last family

  1671. meeting back to

  1672. the beginning

  1673. the return to

  1674. Jacob

  1675. probably brought

  1676. back men

  1677. very different

  1678. from the ones

  1679. who had left

  1680. perhaps more

  1681. conscious of God

  1682. than they'd ever

  1683. been before

  1684. Jacob on the

  1685. other hand

  1686. not so

  1687. the story of

  1688. the journey

  1689. the discovery

  1690. of the silver

  1691. the confession

  1692. that Simeon

  1693. was left behind

  1694. that Benjamin's

  1695. release from

  1696. Jacob's apron

  1697. strings is the

  1698. only possibility

  1699. of Simeon's

  1700. freedom

  1701. brought about a

  1702. response from

  1703. Jacob that was

  1704. not godly

  1705. and yet in my

  1706. dealings with

  1707. Christians and

  1708. my conversations

  1709. and perhaps my

  1710. own experiences

  1711. it's a response

  1712. toward God that

  1713. is not uncommon

  1714. Jacob's first

  1715. thing is to be

  1716. faithless

  1717. he blames

  1718. you have deprived

  1719. me

  1720. his next response

  1721. is one to be

  1722. pessimistic

  1723. everything is

  1724. against me

  1725. his next response

  1726. is to be

  1727. fearful

  1728. fearful that his

  1729. son will be

  1730. harmed

  1731. and that question

  1732. again is do you

  1733. recognize any of

  1734. these things

  1735. that when you're

  1736. met with a

  1737. solution and

  1738. response to

  1739. what's going

  1740. on in your

  1741. life

  1742. and God

  1743. says do it

  1744. my way

  1745. and you say

  1746. you've done

  1747. all this to

  1748. me how on

  1749. earth can I

  1750. trust you

  1751. now

  1752. how can I

  1753. have faith

  1754. in you now

  1755. God when I'm

  1756. going through

  1757. this difficulty

  1758. maybe you're

  1759. tempted this

  1760. evening to

  1761. respond in the

  1762. way that Jacob

  1763. did under the

  1764. sternest of

  1765. tests

  1766. when your

  1767. examination

  1768. begins

  1769. and as I

  1770. said near the

  1771. start perhaps

  1772. God is

  1773. ordained in

  1774. fact not

  1775. perhaps

  1776. God ordains

  1777. everything

  1778. and this

  1779. difficult time

  1780. that you're

  1781. going through

  1782. do you need

  1783. to come back

  1784. to a place of

  1785. repentance

  1786. you'll see that

  1787. in the upcoming

  1788. weeks that

  1789. unlike Jacob

  1790. Joseph has

  1791. come to know

  1792. and trust

  1793. that in

  1794. adversity God

  1795. will work out

  1796. his purposes

  1797. he's learned

  1798. the beauty

  1799. of being

  1800. carried by

  1801. God

  1802. to allow

  1803. God's plans

  1804. to be

  1805. outworked

  1806. Jacob must

  1807. and will

  1808. come to

  1809. learn this

  1810. but at

  1811. present he's

  1812. so far from

  1813. doing so

  1814. and finally

  1815. this evening

  1816. I think we

  1817. should consider

  1818. more about

  1819. Jesus in

  1820. this situation

  1821. Peter Granger

  1822. in his book

  1823. Foundations for

  1824. Faith has a

  1825. really helpful

  1826. suggestion for

  1827. finishing the

  1828. thoughts on

  1829. this chapter

  1830. he says we

  1831. could look at

  1832. the actions of

  1833. Joseph in

  1834. this chapter

  1835. and ask the

  1836. question is

  1837. he judge or

  1838. is he saviour

  1839. is he judging

  1840. the brothers or

  1841. is he saving

  1842. them and I

  1843. think perhaps

  1844. it's an element

  1845. of both

  1846. he must lead

  1847. them to a

  1848. place of

  1849. considering their

  1850. sin before he

  1851. can grant them

  1852. freedom from it

  1853. and so it is

  1854. with Jesus

  1855. Jesus like

  1856. Joseph suffered

  1857. an injustice

  1858. a crime against

  1859. him

  1860. but Jesus

  1861. unlike Joseph

  1862. the crime

  1863. against him

  1864. was the

  1865. perfect crime

  1866. a friend of

  1867. mine at

  1868. college recently

  1869. described the

  1870. murder of

  1871. Jesus as the

  1872. perfect murder

  1873. and I remember

  1874. sort of taking a

  1875. step back going

  1876. what do you

  1877. mean by that

  1878. but it was

  1879. the perfect

  1880. murder

  1881. father forgive

  1882. them they don't

  1883. know what

  1884. they're doing

  1885. they don't

  1886. know that in

  1887. putting Christ

  1888. on the cross

  1889. salvation for

  1890. the world is

  1891. possible

  1892. that's why it

  1893. was the

  1894. perfect murder

  1895. and so judge

  1896. or save you

  1897. when we think

  1898. about Jesus

  1899. and Joseph

  1900. Joseph does

  1901. judge his

  1902. brothers

  1903. to bring about

  1904. true repentance

  1905. to bring about

  1906. God's plan

  1907. for the eventual

  1908. salvation

  1909. of many

  1910. it says

  1911. Romans 2

  1912. 16 tells us

  1913. that God will

  1914. judge us all

  1915. one day

  1916. through Jesus

  1917. Jesus is the

  1918. judge

  1919. but then

  1920. Hebrews 9

  1921. says just as

  1922. people are

  1923. destined to die

  1924. once and after

  1925. that to face

  1926. judgment

  1927. so Christ

  1928. was sacrificed

  1929. once to take

  1930. away the sins

  1931. of many

  1932. and he will

  1933. appear a second

  1934. time

  1935. not to bear

  1936. sin

  1937. but to bring

  1938. salvation for

  1939. those who are

  1940. waiting for him

  1941. you see

  1942. forgiveness is

  1943. possible

  1944. salvation is

  1945. made possible

  1946. for the people

  1947. of Israel

  1948. and the world

  1949. as they come

  1950. to Egypt

  1951. through God's

  1952. ordained life

  1953. and Joseph's

  1954. circumstances

  1955. however God

  1956. ordains the

  1957. death of Christ

  1958. to lead to the

  1959. salvation of the

  1960. world

  1961. and then as we

  1962. examine ourselves

  1963. in light of this

  1964. and ask ourselves

  1965. that question

  1966. do I need

  1967. forgiveness of

  1968. my sin

  1969. like Joseph's

  1970. brothers did

  1971. the only

  1972. conclusion we

  1973. can come to

  1974. is that we do

  1975. because there is

  1976. not one of you

  1977. is perfect out

  1978. here tonight

  1979. not one of you

  1980. is

  1981. and you know

  1982. that you would

  1983. admit to that

  1984. in private

  1985. conversations

  1986. and because

  1987. you're not

  1988. perfect you do

  1989. not meet God's

  1990. standard

  1991. because God's

  1992. standard is

  1993. perfection

  1994. that's why Jesus

  1995. met his standard

  1996. perfection

  1997. perfection

  1998. him who knew

  1999. no sin

  2000. died in our

  2001. place

  2002. and so as you

  2003. answer yes to

  2004. that question of

  2005. needing forgiveness

  2006. I'll leave you again

  2007. with that verse

  2008. for some reason

  2009. it's repeated twice

  2010. but maybe that's not

  2011. a bad thing

  2012. if we confess our

  2013. sins he is faithful

  2014. and just

  2015. to forgive us our

  2016. sins

  2017. and cleanse us

  2018. from all unrighteousness

  2019. as you will see

  2020. in the chapters coming

  2021. this reunion between

  2022. Joseph and his

  2023. brothers

  2024. is a glorious one

  2025. but there's still

  2026. got things that they

  2027. need to work through

  2028. but confession is the

  2029. place where they begin

  2030. let's pray

2031. father we do thank you

  2032. for your word

2033. we thank you for all

2034. that it can teach us
