  1. If you've got a Bible, please turn with me to Genesis chapter 43.

    Genesis 43 chapter mention

  2. That would be great.

  3. We're in the, I think it's the sixth installment in our Joseph series.

  4. It's been great to take somebody we've known about since youth.

  5. We've heard, we've seen on the stage.

  6. We learn at Sunday school and to dig in and find out a bit more and see some new lessons.

  7. There's Joseph and the gospel of many colors.

  8. And this evening, we're in Genesis 43 and 44.

  9. Just a small 62 verses for us to get through.

  10. Anna Levinson writes in a New York newspaper these words.

  11. By the time I was six and my brother was five, we were used to waiting.

  12. Waiting for our father to show up.

  13. On one particular afternoon, we sat in a pool of sunlight that poured through our living room bay window.

  14. We were baking in our jackets ready to go while we waited.

  15. Would he be late?

  16. Would he come at all?

  17. What state would he be in?

  18. What would he smell like?

  19. My parents had separated a year before.

  20. And when my father came to pick us up for occasional visits, his gait was often wobbly and his words were usually slurred.

  21. My mother worked full time in an insurance company.

  22. Our nanny, therefore, would be left to handle these messy transfers.

  23. Sometimes she wouldn't let us go when she saw his condition.

  24. Whilst waiting and worrying, on this occasion I made a decision.

  25. We're so stupid, I said.

  26. He's never going to come.

  27. Most days I would have been right.

  28. But late, slurring but apologetic, he appeared.

  29. We piled into the taxi and drove to Tenderloin, a rough neighborhood across town from where we lived.

  30. On arrival, he gave us a quick tour of the cluttered apartment.

  31. There was a withered pot plant and an overflowing ashtray on a long, dirty coffee table.

  32. A woman with long, stringy blonde hair entered the room and introduced herself as my father's girlfriend.

  33. Immediately, her bulging eyes and grubby fingers scared me.

  34. I was used to meeting weird people when visiting my father, but she was by far the most manic.

  35. After a brief introduction, she and my father abruptly headed to the bedroom, leaving me and my brother on the couch all alone.

  36. A few quiet moments passed before we heard yelling and objects smashing and then silence.

  37. Consumed with fear but driven by curiosity, I crept to the door and knocked softly.

  38. When no answer came, I peered through the crack under the door to see my father and girlfriend passed out on the bed with needles all over the floor.

  39. I ran to the door.

  40. I ran to the door.

  41. I ran to the phone to call my mother and begged her between sobs to come and pick us up.

  42. Although at that age of six, I couldn't then verbalize exactly what was happening, but I knew one thing.

  43. I never wanted to see my father again.

  44. After that moment, my father disappeared from my life for 18 years.

  45. Alana then writes about the ensuing years struggling with OCD, anxiety, depression, hypochondria and withdrawnness.

  46. The article then moves to when she is in her mid-twenties.

  47. Her father reappears, clean of drugs and eager to make up for lost time.

  48. Yet Alana couldn't engage with him.

  49. She was absolutely unable to trust him or respond to any of his attempts to build bridges.

  50. She writes, my shattered trust couldn't be glued back together.

  51. The article ends after a long and painful process with the barrier slowly coming down after her dad passed literally hundreds and hundreds of trust tests.

  52. Alana writes, it was too risky to let him straight back into my life.

  53. We started with monthly phone calls that he had to make when we had agreed.

  54. Then letters that he had to write and they must be delivered to me every Monday.

  55. After this, we'd meet for coffee miles from his house.

  56. Then we'd move to lunches.

  57. I would always tell him when and where and if he was late or missed, it was over.

  58. Trust is slowly built and quickly destroyed.

  59. I couldn't let him back into my life if he was going to ruin everything all over again.

  60. Testing him, she writes, was the only way I could ever move to trusting him.

  61. Horrible story, isn't it, about a six-year-old?

  62. Crushed and severely affected by her father's drug abuse.

  63. And to find out if he was clean, to find out whether he was worth investing in, she tests him in a number of ways.

  64. And Genesis 42, where we've come from, functions a bit like Alana's story.

  65. Joseph hasn't seen his brothers for 22 years.

  66. The last time they met, it didn't go very well.

  67. He turned up to see how their shepherding was going on and they stripped him and they beat him and they threw him in a well

  68. before selling him to the Ishmaelites who carried him to Egypt.

  69. That's his last memory of his brothers.

  70. Before they turn up in chapter 42.

  71. And as we saw with Paul Fred last week, Joseph sets about testing them.

  72. Testing them to see whether he's better off without them.

  73. Testing them to see whether they've changed.

  74. Testing them to see whether he could ever trust them again after being so treated by them.

  75. And in chapter 42, he sets four tests.

  76. The first one is this.

  77. Is Benjamin still alive?

  78. In verse 12.

  79. He asked them.

  80. And they say he is, but there's no evidence.

  81. So they fail the test.

  82. Then he asked for a volunteer to go and get them and no one volunteers.

  83. So they fail that test.

  84. And then he says for a volunteer to stay while the other nine go to get their brother.

  85. And no one volunteers to stay.

  86. So he has Simeon bound before their eyes.

  87. Will someone come back for Simeon?

  88. Well, no.

  89. Because he's still in Egypt.

  90. By the time we open chapter 43.

  91. Then he sets the money trap that they're on their way.

  92. And they open their sacks.

  93. And all the money they paid to Joseph was still there.

  94. Would they go back?

  95. Or would they carry on on their journey?

  96. Well, they carry on on their journey.

  97. There's no about turn.

  98. And we should go and sort this out.

  99. And then they tell him that we need to take Benjamin.

  100. Have they earned Jacob's trust?

  101. Well, no.

  102. Verse 36.

  103. He seems to blame them for absolutely everything.

  104. You have deprived me of my children.

  105. Joseph is no more.

  106. And Simeon is no more.

  107. And now you want to take Benjamin.

  108. Everything is against me.

  109. They don't trust him.

  110. And I guess implicit in the same episode is,

  111. does Benjamin trust them?

  112. Well, we don't exactly see him jumping up and down saying,

  113. I'll go.

  114. So they fail that test as well.

  115. In fact, you have to say,

  116. in chapter 42,

  117. Joseph brothers are an epic fail.

  118. And you kind of think Joseph is better off without them.

  119. They're still just a ragtag bag of swindlers and murderers

  120. and liars and deceivers

  121. who are all out for themselves.

  122. They don't seem to have changed at all.

  123. Yet what we're going to see in our two chapters

  124. is how God is going to providentially work.

  125. How God is going to set tests

  126. and how things are going to be transformed

  127. so that there'll be restoration, reconciliation

  128. and a glorious reunion in chapter 45.

  129. So why don't I pray?

  130. Father God, thank you that you always have your glory

  131. at the forefront of your agenda.

  132. Father, following closely after that

  133. is the blessing of your people

  134. and the ultimate transformation of them

  135. to look more and more like your son.

  136. So as we open this, your word, this evening,

  137. speak to us, we pray.

  138. Glorify our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  139. Transform us

  140. and orientate our lives once again around your gospel.

  141. Father, do this all

  142. by your grace

  143. through the power of your spirit.

  144. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  145. Amen.

  146. So here's the first test

  147. we're going to see

  148. in this little passage.

  149. God tests his people

  150. to free them from idolatry.

  151. God tests his people

  152. to free them from idolatry.

  153. As we enter chapter 43,

  154. the famine is still severe.

  155. It's gone on a long time

  156. and they've run out of food.

  157. They've gone to the cupboard

  158. and it's been like old Mother Hubbard.

  159. There was nothing there.

  160. Simeon is still in Egypt.

  161. He's been there since chapter 42, verse 24.

  162. And Egypt remains their only hope.

  163. The only place in all the world

  164. that has grain surplus enough

  165. that they can give out is Egypt.

  166. And so Jacob says,

  167. verse 2,

  168. go back and buy us a little more food.

  169. Go back and buy us a little more food.

  170. Seems like a really obvious suggestion.

  171. Egypt has food.

  172. You need to go and get it

  173. because we've run out.

  174. And yet there's a problem.

  175. There's a real problem

  176. that Judah points out

  177. in verses 3 to 5.

  178. That if Egypt is their only hope,

  179. then Benjamin is the key

  180. to unlocking that hope.

  181. Benjamin,

  182. Jacob's prize son,

  183. the one that he spent

  184. at the end of chapter 42

  185. saying,

  186. no one's getting hold of Benjamin.

  187. He's staying with me.

  188. And so Judah's reminder

  189. to his father of the fact

  190. that Benjamin is necessary

  191. to get food from Egypt,

  192. stabs Jacob in the heart.

  193. Jacob is very protective of Benjamin.

  194. I don't think it's a stretch to say

  195. that in Jacob's life,

  196. Benjamin has become an idol.

  197. Benjamin has become the center of his life.

  198. Chapter 42, verse 28.

  199. Which is the wrong verse.

  200. 38.

  201. My son will not go down there with you.

  202. His brother is dead

  203. and he is the only one left.

  204. If harm comes to him

  205. on the journey you are taking,

  206. you will bring my gray head

  207. down to the grave in sorrow.

  208. Jacob loves Benjamin that much

  209. that he says,

  210. if he dies, I'll die.

  211. If he dies, I'll die.

  212. 43, verse 6.

  213. Why did you bring this trouble on me

  214. by telling the man

  215. you had another brother?

  216. Just want to keep him for myself.

  217. Without him, I'll die.

  218. Judah's going to say in verse 44

  219. that my father's life

  220. is bound up with this boy.

  221. Jacob's affections

  222. are completely tied up with Benjamin

  223. and he will not let him go.

  224. Tim Keller writes,

  225. when anything in life

  226. is an absolute requirement

  227. for your happiness, life,

  228. and self-worth,

  229. it is essentially an idol.

  230. Something you are actually worshipping.

  231. When threatened,

  232. your anger is absolute.

  233. To diagnose what the idols

  234. in our lives are,

  235. we must ask,

  236. what am I defending?

  237. What is so important

  238. that I cannot live without?

  239. Seems to be where

  240. Jacob finds himself.

  241. Growing up,

  242. we had a dachshund called Jaffa

  243. and Jaffa was the most placid dog

  244. you will ever find.

  245. You'd let him out in the morning

  246. like you should do all dogs

  247. and if it was raining,

  248. Jaffa would go,

  249. well,

  250. don't really fancy it today.

  251. One time,

  252. every month,

  253. our dog would turn

  254. into a ferocious animal

  255. after a lamb Sunday lunch.

  256. He'd throw the bone,

  257. Jaffa would sit on the lawn

  258. like gnawing at it like crazy

  259. and literally,

  260. if you got in within five meters

  261. of this dog,

  262. it would go for you

  263. in the most savage way.

  264. Jaffa became

  265. the most stupid looking guard dog

  266. anyone could ever imagine.

  267. That seems to be

  268. how Jacob is functioning.

  269. If you come close to Benjamin,

  270. there's going to be problems.

  271. And so God is really testing Jacob

  272. to free him

  273. of his idolizing of his son.

  274. Something profound

  275. happens in this text.

  276. Jacob starts by saying,

  277. no way.

  278. It's not going to happen.

  279. And then in verse 8 to 10,

  280. after Judah reasons with him

  281. and says,

  282. it's not just our lives

  283. that are at stake.

  284. It is your life

  285. and the lives of your children.

  286. You've got to let Benjamin go.

  287. I'm even going to offer myself

  288. a surety for him.

  289. Jacob agrees

  290. with Judah's proposal.

  291. It is a remarkable transformation

  292. between chapter 42

  293. and chapter 43.

  294. But Jacob says,

  295. yes,

  296. you can take him.

  297. In fact,

  298. there is a remarkable transformation

  299. going on in chapter 42.

  300. Jacob is repeatedly referred to

  301. by his name,

  302. Jacob.

  303. When we get to chapter 43,

  304. the name that Jacob

  305. is referred by

  306. is Israel.

  307. Jacob's name means

  308. the twister,

  309. the self-reliant,

  310. the one who's always

  311. in it for himself.

  312. Chapter 42

  313. and chapter 43,

  314. the covenant name of God,

  315. the one who is struggling

  316. with what God's will is,

  317. struggling to trust him.

  318. And in chapter,

  319. in verse 14,

  320. he makes three profound

  321. professions of faith.

  322. the beginning of the verse,

  323. and may God almighty

  324. grant you mercy.

  325. How is

  326. Jacob dealing with his idols?

  327. Well,

  328. he's subscribing

  329. all power to God.

  330. Almighty God,

  331. the one who's in charge.

  332. Suddenly,

  333. when we see that God

  334. is almighty,

  335. our idols are minimized

  336. in size

  337. and they become futile

  338. and worthless.

  339. Where he's blaming God

  340. in chapter 42,

  341. why has God

  342. let this happen to me?

  343. Everything's against me.

  344. Here he's saying,

  345. almighty God,

  346. I place myself,

  347. I place everything

  348. into your hands.

  349. He places his children

  350. into God's hands

  351. so that your brother

  352. will let

  353. your other brother

  354. Simeon and Benjamin

  355. come back to you.

  356. And then he places himself

  357. in the hands

  358. of the sovereign God.

  359. As for me,

  360. if I am bereaved,

  361. I am bereaved.

  362. Suddenly,

  363. he's relinquished

  364. his idol.

  365. Suddenly,

  366. he's trusted himself

  367. to the sovereign God.

  368. And he said,

  369. my life is now bound up

  370. with God's will

  371. and what he wants.

  372. Sounds remarkably,

  373. doesn't it?

  374. That last phrase,

  375. if I am bereaved,

  376. I am bereaved.

  377. Like Esther,

  378. when she goes before King Xerxes,

  379. when she says,

  380. I will go and see the king

  381. even though it is

  382. against the law

  383. and if I perish,

  384. I perish.

  385. Trusting a sovereign God

  386. with life and everything.

  387. If you want to catch

  388. a monkey in the jungle,

  389. all you need to do

  390. is put a banana

  391. in a cage.

  392. And the monkey reaches in,

  393. grabs the banana,

  394. but can't get its hand out.

  395. It can't be free

  396. because it won't let go

  397. and the hand

  398. plus the banana

  399. won't fit through

  400. the bars in the cage.

  401. That seems to be

  402. where Jacob has been.

  403. He's holding on

  404. to this idol

  405. and he can't be free.

  406. But God so tests him

  407. that he lets go

  408. in order that he would be free

  409. to enjoy all that God

  410. has for him.

  411. Even more than he thought

  412. he had.

  413. It's not about preserving

  414. Benjamin,

  415. but God has something

  416. much greater

  417. in store.

  418. And so I guess

  419. we see that God

  420. tests us

  421. so that we let go

  422. of our idols

  423. so we'd be free

  424. to worship him.

  425. So we'd be free

  426. to submit

  427. to his ways

  428. to fulfill his purposes

  429. and enjoy him forever.

  430. And I guess tonight

  431. we're all conscious

  432. that we're riddled

  433. with idols.

  434. Spurgeon will write

  435. that the human heart

  436. is the idol factory.

  437. Riddled with

  438. idolizing children

  439. and work

  440. and power

  441. and money

  442. and reputation

  443. and stuff

  444. and image

  445. and countless

  446. other things.

  447. Jacob

  448. didn't think

  449. he could let

  450. Benjamin go

  451. but God

  452. tested him

  453. to release him

  454. from his idolatry.

  455. Centuries later

  456. Jesus will stand

  457. and say

  458. whoever wants to be

  459. my disciples

  460. must

  461. deny themselves,

  462. take up their cross

  463. and follow me.

  464. Oh that God

  465. would test us

  466. in such a way

  467. that we would

  468. stop worshipping

  469. futile

  470. created things

  471. that we might

  472. be free

  473. to worship

  474. him alone.

  475. God tests

  476. his people

  477. to free them

  478. from idols.

  479. We see that

  480. in the life

  481. of Jacob.

  482. So what idols

  483. are we cleaved

  484. to?

  485. What in our life

  486. is so essential

  487. that we think

  488. we cannot do

  489. without it?

  490. And if it's

  491. threatened

  492. our anger

  493. is disproportionate.

  494. Many great saints

  495. have testified

  496. to the truth

  497. it is only

  498. when Jesus

  499. is all that they have

  500. they realise

  501. that Jesus

  502. is all that they need

  503. and that God

  504. would loosen

  505. our grip

  506. so we could

  507. cling to his son

  508. alone.

  509. So they get

  510. to Egypt

  511. and here's

  512. what I think

  513. we learn from this

  514. God tests

  515. his people

  516. to free us

  517. from fear

  518. and reveal

  519. his grace.

  520. They finally

  521. arrive

  522. the eleven

  523. of their

  524. well the ten

  525. of them

  526. when Simeon

  527. is already there

  528. they make it

  529. down to Egypt

  530. and I think

  531. the whole thing

  532. revolves around

  533. verse 16

  534. when Joseph

  535. saw Benjamin

  536. with them

  537. he said

  538. to the steward

  539. of the house

  540. take these men

  541. to my house

  542. slaughter an animal

  543. and prepare a meal

  544. they are to eat

  545. with me at noon

  546. I think

  547. I'm sure

  548. that Joseph

  549. says to the steward

  550. of the house

  551. in Egyptian

  552. that he knows

  553. what's going on

  554. but the brothers

  555. don't have a clue

  556. and that's why

  557. they're so afraid

  558. that is why

  559. they're terrified

  560. because they're being

  561. ushered

  562. into Joseph's

  563. private quarters

  564. and don't know

  565. what is going

  566. to happen

  567. to them

  568. but it's stupid

  569. because Joseph

  570. is the second

  571. most powerful

  572. man in all

  573. of Egypt

  574. and therefore

  575. the world

  576. Joseph doesn't

  577. need to attack

  578. his brothers

  579. in secret

  580. he can do it

  581. out in the open

  582. because he is

  583. untouchable

  584. the brothers

  585. are frightened

  586. the steward

  587. comes in

  588. and verses

  589. 19 to 22

  590. is them

  591. pleading

  592. frantically

  593. their innocence

  594. you can imagine

  595. the scene

  596. they're all

  597. talking over

  598. one another

  599. oh we just

  600. found the silver

  601. we tried to

  602. pay you

  603. somehow it

  604. got back

  605. into our

  606. sacks

  607. please don't

  608. kill us

  609. all making

  610. a real

  611. kerfuffle

  612. then verse 23

  613. the pagan servant

  614. testifies to

  615. God's grace

  616. he says

  617. we did get

  618. your silver

  619. your God

  620. the father

  621. your God

  622. the God

  623. of your father

  624. has given us

  625. has given you

  626. treasure in your

  627. sacks

  628. then he brought

  629. Simeon

  630. out

  631. they thought

  632. they were going

  633. to get knocked

  634. off

  635. and the servant

  636. says no your God

  637. is gracious

  638. he's rewarded

  639. you don't be

  640. afraid

  641. your God is

  642. sovereign and

  643. actually here's

  644. your brother

  645. unbound

  646. fear always

  647. makes us

  648. suspicious

  649. and cynical

  650. and doubting

  651. our fears

  652. always make us

  653. think that the

  654. absolute worst

  655. case scenario

  656. is going

  657. to happen

  658. and our fears

  659. get in the way

  660. of trusting

  661. a sovereign

  662. God

  663. that actually

  664. the way that

  665. we cope with

  666. fear is

  667. doctrine

  668. that when we

  669. see that God

  670. is gracious

  671. and he's

  672. good

  673. when we

  674. see that he's

  675. sovereign

  676. we realise

  677. we have

  678. no need

  679. to be

  680. afraid

  681. because our

  682. God is

  683. unstoppable

  684. and we can

  685. trust him

  686. in every

  687. area of

  688. our lives

  689. so when you

  690. have a freak

  691. out

  692. get your

  693. Bible out

  694. verse 26

  695. and 28

  696. Joseph is

  697. reminded of

  698. God's sovereignty

  699. here are the

  700. brothers

  701. bowing down

  702. again before

  703. him just like

  704. the dream

  705. of the wheat

  706. and the

  707. stars

  708. and then he

  709. sees

  710. Benjamin

  711. and suddenly

  712. his fears

  713. are subsided

  714. they were

  715. telling the

  716. truth

  717. Benjamin

  718. is alive

  719. and his

  720. full brother

  721. the only

  722. other son

  723. born of

  724. Rachel

  725. Jacob's

  726. favourite

  727. wife

  728. is born

  729. in

  730. and it's

  731. too much

  732. for Joseph

  733. deeply

  734. moved

  735. he has to

  736. go out of

  737. the room

  738. to have

  739. a good

  740. cry

  741. I wonder

  742. what in

  743. your life

  744. makes you

  745. afraid

  746. and I

  747. wonder

  748. is the way

  749. you can

  750. conquer

  751. that fear

  752. knowing

  753. more

  754. about

  755. God

  756. trusting

  757. the God

  758. that is

  759. revealed

  760. in this

  761. book

  762. don't we

  763. read in

  764. 1 Corinthians

  765. 15

  766. that even

  767. God is

  768. sovereign

  769. and gracious

  770. and that

  771. grace is

  772. bigger than

  773. death

  774. he writes

  775. death

  776. has been

  777. swallowed

  778. up in

  779. victory

  780. where

  781. oh death

  782. is your

  783. victory

  784. where

  785. oh death

  786. is your

  787. sting

  788. sting

  789. of death

  790. is sin

  791. and the

  792. power

  793. of sin

  794. is the

  795. law

  796. but thanks

  797. be to

  798. God

  799. he gives

  800. us

  801. victory

  802. through

  803. our

  804. Lord

  805. Jesus

  806. Christ

  807. surely

  808. if God's

  809. grace

  810. is bigger

  811. even

  812. than

  813. death

  814. then fear

  815. becomes

  816. futile

  817. if you

  818. were here

  819. on Thursday

  820. you'd have

  821. heard

  822. Alexander

  823. read

  824. Psalm

  825. 23

  826. and what

  827. a beautiful

  828. reminder

  829. even though

  830. I walk

  831. through the

  832. shadow

  833. of death

  834. you're

  835. with me

  836. it gets

  837. even better

  838. than that

  839. you lay

  840. a banquet

  841. before all

  842. my enemies

  843. in the midst

  844. of my enemies

  845. well the brothers

  846. go down to

  847. Egypt

  848. they think

  849. they're going

  850. to be treated

  851. as enemies

  852. God is

  853. gracious

  854. to them

  855. and to top

  856. it all off

  857. Joseph lays

  858. on a banquet

  859. before them

  860. I wonder

  861. will we

  862. trust a

  863. sovereign

  864. gracious

  865. God

  866. in every

  867. area of

  868. our life

  869. so we

  870. will not

  871. be fearful

  872. and we

  873. remember

  874. what he's

  875. like

  876. will we

  877. trust him

  878. in our

  879. everyday

  880. lives

  881. will we

  882. trust him

  883. with

  884. tomorrow

  885. will we

  886. trust him

  887. in every

  888. area

  889. will we

  890. trust him

  891. as a

  892. church

  893. will we

  894. trust him

  895. in our

  896. evangelism

  897. is grace

  898. going to be

  899. sufficient

  900. to quell

  901. our fears

  902. and so

  903. God tests

  904. these brothers

  905. that they

  906. might be

  907. transformed

  908. that fear

  909. might be

  910. replaced

  911. by trust

  912. and they

  913. see that

  914. God is

  915. sovereign

  916. over it

  917. all and

  918. is treating

  919. them far

  920. better

  921. than they

  922. deserve

  923. okay

  924. third point

  925. here we

  926. go

  927. God

  928. tests his

  929. people to

  930. free them

  931. from

  932. individualism

  933. and bind

  934. them

  935. together

  936. do you

  937. see it's

  938. a sting

  939. operation

  940. that it's

  941. not just

  942. the silver

  943. that's

  944. replaced

  945. again

  946. but there's

  947. this cup

  948. that has

  949. special

  950. significance

  951. in

  952. Joseph's

  953. life

  954. and Joseph

  955. knows that

  956. Benjamin is

  957. still alive

  958. but he

  959. doesn't know

  960. that his

  961. brothers love

  962. Benjamin

  963. they're worried

  964. that they

  965. kind of treat

  966. him like

  967. they used

  968. to treat

  969. Joseph

  970. and when

  971. they're away

  972. when Benjamin's

  973. finally been

  974. prized away

  975. from their

  976. father

  977. will they

  978. take this

  979. opportunity

  980. to kill

  981. him again

  982. he's already

  983. partially tested

  984. them in

  985. chapter 43

  986. verse 34

  987. when Benjamin

  988. gets five

  989. times the

  990. helping

  991. will there

  992. be jealousy

  993. and rivalry

  994. then

  995. well it

  996. doesn't seem

  997. to be

  998. everyone's

  999. feasting

  1000. and drinking

  1001. together

  1002. and there

  1003. doesn't seem

  1004. to be a

  1005. hint

  1006. but then

  1007. dogs don't

  1008. turn on each

  1009. other when

  1010. there's enough

  1011. food to go

  1012. around

  1013. crisis will

  1014. reveal what's

  1015. really going

  1016. on

  1017. are they in

  1018. it together

  1019. are they a

  1020. family unit

  1021. united

  1022. or will

  1023. they go

  1024. it alone

  1025. well the

  1026. brothers wake

  1027. up in the

  1028. morning they've

  1029. had a cracking

  1030. night in the

  1031. prime minister's

  1032. house I'm

  1033. sure they've

  1034. got sore

  1035. heads and

  1036. they've still

  1037. got full

  1038. bellies

  1039. they've

  1040. partied like

  1041. Egyptians

  1042. they ride

  1043. along chatting

  1044. together

  1045. and then you

  1046. know like when

  1047. you see the

  1048. blue flashing

  1049. lights

  1050. in your

  1051. mirror

  1052. they see

  1053. the dust

  1054. of a

  1055. chariot

  1056. coming up

  1057. behind

  1058. not some

  1059. random

  1060. stop and

  1061. search this

  1062. is a sting

  1063. operation

  1064. the servant

  1065. repeats

  1066. Joseph's words

  1067. to them

  1068. why have you

  1069. repaid good

  1070. with evil

  1071. isn't this

  1072. the cup my

  1073. master drinks

  1074. from and

  1075. also uses

  1076. for divination

  1077. this is a

  1078. wicked thing

  1079. you've done

  1080. and again

  1081. they plead

  1082. their innocence

  1083. in verses

  1084. seven to

  1085. nine

  1086. if any

  1087. of your

  1088. servants

  1089. they say

  1090. is found

  1091. to have

  1092. it

  1093. he will

  1094. die

  1095. and the

  1096. rest of

  1097. it will

  1098. become my

  1099. lord's

  1100. slaves

  1101. that sounds

  1102. pretty

  1103. together

  1104. but verse

  1105. 10 he

  1106. offers them

  1107. a get

  1108. out clause

  1109. very well

  1110. then he

  1111. said

  1112. let it

  1113. be as

  1114. you say

  1115. whoever is

  1116. found to

  1117. have it

  1118. will become

  1119. my slave

  1120. the rest of

  1121. you will be

  1122. free from

  1123. blame

  1124. they've got an

  1125. opportunity

  1126. they can go

  1127. it alone

  1128. they can cut

  1129. and run

  1130. and so

  1131. they're lined

  1132. up in

  1133. age order

  1134. go to

  1135. reuben

  1136. first

  1137. clean

  1138. keep going

  1139. keep going

  1140. and i bet

  1141. with every

  1142. clear sack

  1143. that doesn't

  1144. have the

  1145. cup

  1146. benjamin

  1147. gets more

  1148. and more

  1149. sure that

  1150. he's going

  1151. to be

  1152. fine

  1153. they get

  1154. to benjamin

  1155. sack

  1156. and he's

  1157. got the

  1158. cup

  1159. and everyone

  1160. tears their

  1161. clothes

  1162. the absolute

  1163. worst case

  1164. scenario

  1165. has happened

  1166. that perhaps

  1167. benjamin

  1168. won't get

  1169. back to

  1170. jacob

  1171. after all

  1172. but isn't

  1173. it incredible

  1174. that they

  1175. stick together

  1176. as a family

  1177. at this

  1178. they tore

  1179. their clothes

  1180. then they

  1181. all loaded

  1182. their donkeys

  1183. and returned

  1184. to the city

  1185. there seems

  1186. to have been

  1187. a radical

  1188. transformation

  1189. they left

  1190. simeon

  1191. in the city

  1192. no problem

  1193. benjamin's

  1194. caught their

  1195. roar

  1196. going back

  1197. you see how

  1198. god is

  1199. testing them

  1200. and through

  1201. these tests

  1202. he's freeing

  1203. them of it's

  1204. all about me

  1205. and they

  1206. become this

  1207. family unit

  1208. bound

  1209. together

  1210. this testing

  1211. strengthens the

  1212. ropes of

  1213. fellowship

  1214. between

  1215. the brothers

  1216. and don't

  1217. we know

  1218. that in our

  1219. own lives

  1220. that when

  1221. tough times

  1222. come doesn't

  1223. it bind us

  1224. together

  1225. some of my

  1226. proudest moments

  1227. of being

  1228. pastor of

  1229. Brunsfield

  1230. evangelical

  1231. church

  1232. has been

  1233. when all

  1234. our backs

  1235. are against

  1236. the wall

  1237. because we

  1238. see just how

  1239. tightly knitted

  1240. we are

  1241. together as a

  1242. family

  1243. that no testing

  1244. is very good

  1245. when you go

  1246. through it

  1247. and yet

  1248. doesn't it

  1249. strengthen those

  1250. ropes

  1251. doesn't it

  1252. bind us

  1253. together as a

  1254. family

  1255. all together

  1256. doesn't it

  1257. make us

  1258. into a true

  1259. spiritual family

  1260. and not just

  1261. people who

  1262. rub

  1263. shoulders

  1264. Christ

  1265. 1 Corinthians

  1266. 12

  1267. but God

  1268. so composed

  1269. the body

  1270. that there

  1271. may be no

  1272. division

  1273. but that all

  1274. the members

  1275. have the same

  1276. care for one

  1277. another

  1278. if one member

  1279. suffers

  1280. all suffer

  1281. together

  1282. if one member

  1283. is honoured

  1284. all rejoice

  1285. together

  1286. crisis comes

  1287. and it binds

  1288. people together

  1289. and yet don't

  1290. we know

  1291. sometimes when

  1292. crisis hits

  1293. we're secretly

  1294. quite pleased

  1295. when others

  1296. are brought low

  1297. I'm quite

  1298. disappointed

  1299. when someone

  1300. is lifted up

  1301. it cannot

  1302. be so

  1303. God

  1304. tests us

  1305. to knit us

  1306. together

  1307. God is for

  1308. us

  1309. he tests us

  1310. to free us

  1311. from individualism

  1312. and to bind us

  1313. together as

  1314. his family

  1315. lastly

  1316. God tests

  1317. his people

  1318. to free them

  1319. from lostness

  1320. and reveal

  1321. his true

  1322. leader

  1323. I think

  1324. we've seen

  1325. throughout

  1326. the Joseph

  1327. story so

  1328. far that

  1329. the brothers

  1330. are a bit

  1331. of a rabble

  1332. they seem a bit

  1333. rudderless

  1334. they don't really

  1335. have anyone

  1336. who's telling

  1337. them what to

  1338. do

  1339. when Joseph

  1340. says would

  1341. somebody

  1342. volunteer to

  1343. go

  1344. no one

  1345. volunteers

  1346. when somebody

  1347. says will

  1348. someone stay

  1349. behind

  1350. no one

  1351. stays behind

  1352. they're a bit

  1353. leaderless

  1354. they don't

  1355. really have

  1356. a captain

  1357. telling them

  1358. what to

  1359. do

  1360. but in

  1361. chapter 43

  1362. a leader

  1363. emerges

  1364. they're like

  1365. sheep without

  1366. a shepherd

  1367. and in

  1368. chapter 43

  1369. Judah

  1370. comes forward

  1371. he's the

  1372. fourth born

  1373. son

  1374. and yet we

  1375. see him

  1376. emerge as

  1377. the one

  1378. that

  1379. Jacob

  1380. listens to

  1381. Joseph

  1382. listens to

  1383. we saw

  1384. in chapter

  1385. 42

  1386. Reuben

  1387. says give

  1388. Benjamin

  1389. to me

  1390. and if

  1391. he's dead

  1392. you can

  1393. kill my

  1394. two sons

  1395. Judah

  1396. says in

  1397. chapter 43

  1398. if Benjamin

  1399. doesn't come

  1400. back to you

  1401. then it's my

  1402. life that

  1403. will be

  1404. ashamed

  1405. before you

  1406. all the

  1407. days of

  1408. my life

  1409. Judah's been

  1410. growing in

  1411. repentance

  1412. and transformation

  1413. ever since

  1414. that really

  1415. grisly episode

  1416. in chapter

  1417. 38

  1418. where he

  1419. gets Tamar

  1420. pregnant

  1421. and he

  1422. makes this

  1423. confession

  1424. she is

  1425. more

  1426. righteous

  1427. than I

  1428. a confession

  1429. of sin

  1430. and since

  1431. that

  1432. confession

  1433. since that

  1434. repentance

  1435. Judah's life

  1436. has been

  1437. changing

  1438. over the

  1439. last two

  1440. decades

  1441. and here

  1442. we see him

  1443. emerge as

  1444. the leader

  1445. he takes

  1446. the blame

  1447. he says

  1448. our guilt

  1449. has been

  1450. revealed

  1451. and then

  1452. he steps

  1453. forward

  1454. towards

  1455. Joseph

  1456. verse 18

  1457. then Judah

  1458. went up

  1459. to him

  1460. and said

  1461. if you

  1462. approach

  1463. Joseph

  1464. who's the

  1465. prime minister

  1466. uninvited

  1467. that's your

  1468. life

  1469. on the

  1470. line

  1471. and yet

  1472. he stands

  1473. before him

  1474. he takes

  1475. the blame

  1476. he recaps

  1477. the entire

  1478. history

  1479. verse 33

  1480. is the

  1481. most

  1482. significant

  1483. verse so

  1484. far

  1485. now

  1486. then

  1487. please

  1488. let your

  1489. servant

  1490. remain

  1491. here

  1492. as my

  1493. lord's

  1494. slave

  1495. in place

  1496. of the

  1497. boy

  1498. and let

  1499. the

  1500. boy

  1501. return

  1502. with his

  1503. brothers

  1504. this is

  1505. the first

  1506. case

  1507. in any

  1508. part of

  1509. scripture

  1510. in the

  1511. whole

  1512. unfolding

  1513. of

  1514. Genesis

  1515. so far

  1516. where

  1517. somebody

  1518. offers

  1519. their

  1520. life

  1521. for

  1522. somebody

  1523. else

  1524. you see

  1525. Judah

  1526. emerge as

  1527. a leader

  1528. and then

  1529. we see

  1530. that he

  1531. offers

  1532. himself

  1533. as a

  1534. substitute

  1535. you have

  1536. to say

  1537. that Judah

  1538. is behaving

  1539. more and more

  1540. like the

  1541. lion of

  1542. Judah

  1543. who would

  1544. come

  1545. a long

  1546. way down

  1547. the line

  1548. brothers

  1549. were

  1550. rudeless

  1551. he appears

  1552. as the

  1553. shepherd

  1554. for the

  1555. sheep

  1556. of his

  1557. brothers

  1558. and we

  1559. see him

  1560. offer his

  1561. life

  1562. for

  1563. Benjamin

  1564. Judah

  1565. becomes

  1566. the

  1567. substitute

  1568. shepherd

  1569. shepherd

  1570. John

    John 10:14

  1571. 10

  1572. verse

  1573. 14

  1574. I am

  1575. the

  1576. good

  1577. shepherd

  1578. I

  1579. know

  1580. my

  1581. sheep

  1582. and my

  1583. sheep

  1584. know

  1585. me

  1586. just as

  1587. the

  1588. father

  1589. knows

  1590. me

  1591. and I

  1592. know

  1593. the

  1594. father

  1595. and I

  1596. lay

  1597. down

  1598. my

  1599. life

  1600. for the

  1601. sheep

  1602. seems

  1603. that there's

  1604. a shadow

  1605. and a

  1606. type of

  1607. a greater

  1608. one to

  1609. come

  1610. emerging

  1611. in the

  1612. life of

  1613. Judah

  1614. it's been

  1615. a bit

  1616. of a

  1617. whistle

  1618. stop

  1619. tour

  1620. I

  1621. hope

  1622. that

  1623. God

  1624. takes

  1625. what

  1626. is

  1627. for

  1628. us

  1629. and

  1630. keep

  1631. it

  1632. and

  1633. sear

  1634. it

  1635. on

  1636. our

  1637. hearts

  1638. God

  1639. tests

  1640. his

  1641. people

  1642. to

  1643. free

  1644. them

  1645. from

  1646. idols

  1647. see that

  1648. in the

  1649. interplay

  1650. between

  1651. Jacob

  1652. and

  1653. Benjamin

  1654. God

  1655. tests

  1656. his

  1657. people

  1658. to

  1659. free

  1660. them

  1661. from

  1662. fear

  1663. and

  1664. reveal

  1665. his

  1666. grace

  1667. God

  1668. tests

  1669. his

  1670. people

  1671. to

  1672. free

  1673. them

  1674. from

  1675. individualism

  1676. and

  1677. bind

  1678. them

  1679. together

  1680. God

  1681. tests

  1682. his

  1683. people

  1684. to

  1685. free

  1686. them

  1687. from

  1688. lostness

  1689. and

  1690. reveal

  1691. his

  1692. true

  1693. leader

  1694. let

  1695. me

  1696. pray

  1697. father

  1698. god

  1699. we've

  1700. romped

  1701. through

  1702. your

  1703. word

  1704. of

  1705. breakneck

  1706. speed

  1707. father

  1708. we've

  1709. left

  1710. a lot

  1711. out

  1712. but

  1713. lord

  1714. i pray

  1715. these

  1716. four

  1717. lessons

  1718. might

  1719. encourage

  1720. us

  1721. that

  1722. as

  1723. we

  1724. face

  1725. the

  1726. test

  1727. that

  1728. you

  1729. put

  1730. in

  1731. our

  1732. way

  1733. father

  1734. they

  1735. might

  1736. relinquish

  1737. the

  1738. grip

  1739. the

  1740. idols

  1741. have

  1742. on

  1743. us

  1744. father

  1745. that

  1746. we

  1747. might

  1748. trust

  1749. you

  1750. when

  1751. we're

  1752. afraid

  1753. of

  1754. what's

  1755. coming

  1756. against

  1757. us

  1758. knowing

  1759. that

  1760. you're

  1761. sovereign

  1762. and

  1763. you're

  1764. good

  1765. all

  1766. the

  1767. time

  1768. father

  1769. that

  1770. we

  1771. wouldn't

  1772. go

  1773. in

  1774. alone

  1775. but

  1776. it

  1777. would

  1778. strengthen

  1779. us

  1780. as

  1781. a

  1782. family

  1783. as

  1784. problems

  1785. come

  1786. as

  1787. storms

  1788. erupt

  1789. that

  1790. it

  1791. might

  1792. strengthen

  1793. the

  1794. ropes

  1795. of

  1796. fellowship

  1797. between

  1798. us

  1799. and

  1800. lord

  1801. that

  1802. it

  1803. might

  1804. make

  1805. all

  1806. the

  1807. more

  1808. us

  1809. trust

  1810. your

  1811. son

  1812. the

  1813. good

  1814. shepherd

  1815. father

  1816. thank

  1817. you

  1818. that

  1819. we

  1820. see

  1821. it

  1822. in

  1823. a

  1824. type

  1825. as

  1826. judah

  1827. emerges

  1828. as

  1829. a

  1830. leader

  1831. amongst

  1832. his

  1833. brothers

  1834. lord

  1835. thank

  1836. you

  1837. that

  1838. jesus

  1839. is

  1840. our

  1841. leader

  1842. who

  1843. offers

  1844. himself

  1845. for

  1846. us

  1847. who

  1848. takes

  1849. our

  1850. place

  1851. that

  1852. we

  1853. might

  1854. go

  1855. free

  1856. that

  1857. we

  1858. might

  1859. know

  1860. forgiveness

  1861. that

  1862. we

  1863. might

  1864. not

  1865. be

  1866. slaves

  1867. anymore

  1868. father

  1869. father

  1870. thank

  1871. you

  1872. that

  1873. the

  1874. one

  1875. who

  1876. knew

  1877. no

  1878. sin

  1879. became

  1880. sin

  1881. for

  1882. us

  1883. so

  1884. that

  1885. in

  1886. him

  1887. we

  1888. might

  1889. become

  1890. the

  1891. righteousness

  1892. of

  1893. God

  1894. father

  1895. bless

  1896. these

  1897. things

  1898. to us

  1899. we

  1900. pray

  1901. in

  1902. jesus

  1903. name

  1904. amen
