  1. So I'd like to talk to you about tax this morning.

  2. Who ever said church was boring?

  3. I want to talk about tax.

  4. And tax, for those of you who don't know,

  5. is a compulsory contribution you have to make to the state

  6. for different things that you earn, services that you use,

  7. and purchases that you make.

  8. You will look about as excited as this as I am.

  9. So you pay income tax, you pay inheritance tax,

  10. you pay road tax, which they certainly don't use

  11. to solve the pothole problem in Edinburgh.

  12. You pay capital gains tax, you pay value added tax,

  13. and all sorts of other kinds of tax.

  14. Benjamin Franklin said this,

  15. certainty in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.

  16. Good news.

  17. So just to give you an example of tax.

  18. Jack did some work for me.

  19. And I didn't have any money,

  20. so I'm going to pay him in kinder bars.

  21. Jack worked really hard, he did really well,

  22. so I'm going to pay him ten kinder bars.

  23. Are you ready, Jack?

  24. Hold out your hands.

  25. Check I don't shortchange you, I am English.

  26. One, two, three, four, eight, ten.

  27. Agreed?

  28. Good lads.

  29. Problem is, Jack,

  30. this is a church,

  31. so this isn't like a brown envelope under the table,

  32. say no more, say no more kind of deal.

  33. You're going to have to pay some tax.

  34. Here's your tax bill,

  35. it'll come up on the screen,

  36. and you must pay it immediately.

  37. Okay, so there's a parent tax.

  38. 20%, that's two bars,

  39. and they need to go to your mum.

  40. Parent tax.

  41. On you go.

  42. What else do you have to pay, Jack?

  43. Brother tax.

  44. Ten percent.

  45. One bar.

  46. And a bargain at the price.

  47. What else?

  48. A cleaning tax.

  49. Unfortunately, Irene's gone out,

  50. so I'll take that for her.

  51. What else?

  52. A youth pastor tax.

  53. Ten percent.

  54. You need to pay Peter.

  55. He works very, very hard,

  56. and his tax is well earned.

  57. And then there's a tech tax.

  58. You see, they're serving you

  59. by putting your tax bill on the screen,

  60. so you better go and pay them.

  61. Let's see what else you've got.

  62. That's actually it, Jack.

  63. Ten kinder bars,

  64. your total tax bill,

  65. 60%.

  66. How did you like paying tax?

  67. You didn't,

  68. but you'll need to get used to it.

  69. Thank you very much.

  70. No, you don't need to pay me tax.

  71. I'm all right.

  72. It's amazing, isn't it,

  73. that tax is kind of ubiquitous.

  74. Everyone pays it.

  75. And Romans 13 says,

  76. by obeying civil authorities,

  77. you're worshipping God.

  78. So next time you pay something

  79. to the government,

  80. think I'm actually worshipping the Lord

  81. by paying tax.

  82. Story I want us to look at this morning

  83. is about paying tax.

  84. Problem is,

  85. I'm not very good at reading,

  86. so any words that's in blue

  87. you're going to have to help me with

  88. and all read it out together.

  89. Okay, you all look very educated,

  90. if not slightly worried.

  91. Okay, here's the story.

  92. It's from Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  93. It starts like this.

  94. Later they sent some of the Pharisees

  95. and Herodians to

  96. to

  97. him in his words.

  98. They came to him and said,

  99. we know that you are a man

  100. of integrity.

  101. I was better at reading than I thought.

  102. You aren't swayed by others

  103. because you

  104. know attention to who they are,

  105. but you

  106. the way of God

  107. in accordance with the

  108. truth.

  109. Is it right to

  110. the imperial tax to Caesar or not?

  111. Should we

  112. or shouldn't we?

  113. But

  114. knew their hypocrisy,

  115. why are you trying to

  116. me?

  117. He asked,

  118. bring me a denarius

  119. and let me look at it.

  120. They bought the

  121. coin

  122. and he asked them,

  123. whose

  124. is this

  125. and whose inscription

  126. Caesar's they

  127. denarius

  128. Then Jesus said to them,

  129. back to Caesar

  130. what is Caesar's

  131. and to

  132. what is

  133. and they were

  134. at him.

  135. It's a very little story,

  136. isn't it?

  137. And we're going to try and understand it

  138. just very briefly together.

  139. The first thing we're going to have to do

  140. to understand this story

  141. is understand who the two groups of people are.

  142. We need to know who are the Pharisees

  143. and who are the Herodians.

  144. So let me give you a little bit of history.

  145. If tax was an exciting,

  146. history will certainly do it for you.

  147. Here we are.

  148. Now,

  149. these two groups of people usually hate each other.

  150. The Pharisees

  151. are a group of religious extremists.

  152. They hate the Romans

  153. who were the occupying force

  154. in Israel at this time.

  155. They are ultra-religious.

  156. The Pharisees hate Romans'

  157. religious extremists.

  158. Here are the Herodians.

  159. The Herodians love the Romans.

  160. They're very political

  161. and they're collaborators.

  162. They work with the Romans.

  163. Do you see how normally

  164. these two groups of people

  165. would not get along at all?

  166. They're actually

  167. opposites to each other.

  168. The Pharisees look down on the Herodians

  169. as being compromises

  170. and the Herodians look down on the Pharisees

  171. for being religious neat-necks.

  172. But here in our story,

  173. we find them working together.

  174. And the reason they're working together

  175. is because they both

  176. are threatened

  177. and they hate Jesus.

  178. In fact,

  179. this collaboration,

  180. this coalition

  181. has been going on

  182. since chapter 3, verse 6,

  183. when Jesus

  184. heals a man with a withered hand

  185. and at the end of that story

  186. it says,

  187. and the Pharisees

  188. and the Herodians

  189. went out together

  190. to plot

  191. how they might kill

  192. Jesus.

  193. It's a story about tax

  194. asked by these two groups of people

  195. and this is how it comes about.

  196. The Herodians

  197. and the Pharisees

  198. come to Jesus

  199. to catch him in his words.

  200. They want to trap him.

  201. They want to catch him out.

  202. This is part of their plot

  203. to try and shut him up

  204. forever.

  205. And so verse 14,

  206. they come with a lot of flattery.

  207. Teacher,

  208. we know that you're a man

  209. of integrity.

  210. Your insides are the same

  211. as your outsides.

  212. You're a good guy.

  213. You aren't swayed by others

  214. because you pay no attention

  215. to who they are.

  216. Single-minded

  217. and focused on teaching

  218. the way of God

  219. in accordance with the truth.

  220. It's very flattering.

  221. Slithery tongues

  222. baiting the trap

  223. and here's the trap

  224. and it is a killer question.

  225. Is it right to pay

  226. the imperial tax

  227. to Caesar or not?

  228. Should we pay

  229. or shouldn't we?

  230. The reason that is

  231. such a brilliant question

  232. is because if Jesus says yes,

  233. then the Pharisees

  234. will condemn him

  235. for being a collaborator,

  236. for being willing

  237. to go along

  238. with what the Romans say.

  239. And if he says no,

  240. the Herodians

  241. will have him

  242. as a rebel,

  243. as somebody

  244. who's usurping

  245. what Caesar says.

  246. If he says yes,

  247. he's condemned.

  248. If he says no,

  249. he's condemned.

  250. Jesus,

  251. should we pay tax

  252. or not?

  253. Brilliant question.

  254. Jesus is in

  255. a catch-22 situation.

  256. He is literally

  257. between a rock

  258. and a hard place.

  259. He's condemned

  260. if he does

  261. and he's condemned

  262. if he doesn't.

  263. What's he going to do?

  264. How's he going to get

  265. out of this trap?

  266. Well, he says,

  267. bring me a denarius.

  268. Here's to warm up.

  269. That's a two-pence piece.

  270. Whose picture is on it?

  271. Liz.

  272. Liz is on it.

  273. But that's not,

  274. they don't,

  275. Jesus doesn't say

  276. bring me a two-pence.

  277. He says,

  278. bring me a denarius,

  279. which was a coin

  280. that was paid

  281. for one day's labor

  282. for a normal person.

  283. Whose image is on this?

  284. Brilliant, Aaron.

  285. Unbelievable.

  286. Tiberius Caesar.

  287. And Jesus says,

  288. whose image is this

  289. and whose inscription?

  290. They say Caesar.

  291. And then Jesus says,

  292. give back to Caesar

  293. what is Caesar's

  294. and to God

  295. what is God's.

  296. And then it comments,

  297. and they were amazed

  298. at him.

  299. They've gone from

  300. trying to trap him

  301. in his words

  302. to being amazed at him

  303. all by using a coin

  304. and asking one question,

  305. whose image is this?

  306. Why is that so brilliant?

  307. What is really going on here?

  308. Well, let me walk you

  309. through the logic.

  310. The reason that you pay taxes

  311. to Caesar

  312. is because your coin

  313. has Caesar's face on it,

  314. Caesar's image on it,

  315. and Caesar's inscription.

  316. So what bears Caesar's image

  317. and bears Caesar's inscription,

  318. you're to give back to Caesar.

  319. But he's making a very profound point.

  320. Because in the mind

  321. of these people,

  322. there's this word image

  323. and this word inscription.

  324. In Genesis 1.26,

  325. God at the very creation

  326. of the world says,

  327. let us make man

  328. in our image.

  329. That humankind

  330. is to bear the image of God.

  331. humankind is indwelt

  332. with value,

  333. dignity,

  334. and worth

  335. as image bearers

  336. of the living God.

  337. And then in Jeremiah 31.33,

  338. God says this,

  339. I will put my law

  340. in their minds

  341. and inscribe it

  342. on their hearts.

  343. The coin bears

  344. Caesar's image

  345. and Caesar's inscription.

  346. I, you, we,

  347. bear God's image

  348. and God's inscription.

  349. And so Jesus says,

  350. give the coin to Caesar

  351. because it's Caesar's.

  352. But the question,

  353. the answer behind

  354. the answer,

  355. well before you get to that,

  356. understand that everything you are

  357. and everything you have

  358. belong to God

  359. and it's important

  360. that you give yourself to him.

  361. That's why they were amazed

  362. at him.

  363. That's why they marveled

  364. at him

  365. because he took their trap

  366. and he flipped reverse to them.

  367. They were left undone

  368. as people who knew

  369. that they weren't giving

  370. all of their lives to God

  371. as those who bear his image

  372. and his inscription.

  373. And so Jesus would say

  374. exactly the same thing

  375. to each of us this morning.

  376. Give to Caesar

  377. what is Caesar's

  378. or give to Liz

  379. what is Liz's

  380. but give to God

  381. what is God's.

  382. And this presents

  383. a massive problem

  384. for each and every one of us

  385. because we're all guilty

  386. of tax evasion.

  387. We've all failed

  388. to give to God

  389. what is rightfully his.

  390. Each individual one of us

  391. has failed to love

  392. the Lord our God

  393. with all our heart,

  394. soul,

  395. mind,

  396. and strength

  397. and none of us

  398. love our neighbor

  399. as ourselves.

  400. And the problem is

  401. for this tax evasion

  402. before a holy God

  403. the penalty

  404. is not a fine.

  405. It's not a prison sentence.

  406. It's death.

  407. Romans 6.23

  408. will say that

  409. the wages of sin,

  410. the penalty for sin

  411. is death.

  412. And we're all undone.

  413. We're all guilty.

  414. We're all fraudsters

  415. and tax evaders

  416. because we haven't given

  417. to God

  418. what is God's.

  419. So a story about tax

  420. actually becomes

  421. a very condemning story

  422. about how we failed

  423. before God.

  424. But there is good news

  425. that the very center

  426. of Mark's gospel

  427. is this verse.

  428. For even the Son of Man

  429. that's a phrase

  430. that Jesus uses

  431. to refer to himself.

  432. For even the Jesus

  433. did not come

  434. to be served

  435. but to serve

  436. and to give his life

  437. as a ransom

  438. to pay the penalty

  439. for many,

  440. for us.

  441. We were tax evaders

  442. who failed to give

  443. to God

  444. everything that was his.

  445. Jesus came

  446. and gave all of himself

  447. all of the time

  448. to God.

  449. He paid it in full.

  450. And yet he goes

  451. to a cross

  452. and dies a death.

  453. And why?

  454. That the only one

  455. who gave to God

  456. what was truly God's fully

  457. died on the cross

  458. so that we

  459. who have failed

  460. to give to God

  461. what is rightfully God's

  462. could go free.

  463. Could have

  464. a clean bill of health

  465. from HMRC

  466. in the heavenly places.

  467. This is good news.

  468. Give to Caesar

  469. what is Caesar's

  470. but give to God

  471. what is God's

  472. and we failed

  473. but Jesus won

  474. for us.

  475. And therefore

  476. we get a great

  477. credit score

  478. by trusting in him.

  479. How do we

  480. take hold

  481. of this bailout?

  482. By trusting in Jesus

  483. and saying

  484. you did it for me.

  485. I accrued

  486. a load of debt

  487. that I couldn't pay

  488. and yet you came

  489. and died in my place

  490. so that your

  491. perfect credit history

  492. could be replaced

  493. by my fallen

  494. failing

  495. pitiful

  496. credit history.

  497. so you died

  498. for me

  499. so I

  500. can go free.

  501. Start Romans 6.23

  502. for the penalty

  503. of sin

  504. is death

  505. but the gift

  506. of God

  507. is eternal life

  508. in Christ Jesus.

  509. Why?

  510. Because Jesus

  511. didn't come

  512. to be served

  513. but to serve

  514. and to give

  515. his life

  516. as a ransom

  517. for many.

  518. I wonder

  519. if you're

  520. a Christian

  521. here today

  522. in response

  523. to this great news

  524. are you

  525. giving to God

  526. what is God's?

  527. Are you giving

  528. your all to him

  529. trusting him

  530. with everything

  531. and saying

  532. if Christ Jesus

  533. did this for me

  534. then nothing

  535. I can do

  536. is too much

  537. for me

  538. to do for him.

  539. But perhaps

  540. you're not a Christian

  541. here today

  542. and this is the first

  543. time you've even heard

  544. that you owe a debt

  545. that you cannot pay.

  546. Well the only answer

  547. is to trust Jesus

  548. who pays it

  549. for you

  550. and say

  551. Jesus

  552. I'm sorry

  553. that I haven't

  554. loved the Lord

  555. my God

  556. with all my heart

  557. soul mind

  558. and strength

  559. and I haven't

  560. loved my neighbour

  561. as myself

  562. thank you

  563. that you came

  564. and you died

  565. my death

  566. please

  567. will you

  568. forgive me

  569. that I might

  570. go free

  571. that you might

  572. pay my ransom

  573. for me

  574. why don't I pray

  575. Father God

  576. we can come

  577. and we confess

  578. that we owe

  579. a debt

  580. that we cannot

  581. pay

  582. we've sinned

  583. in ways

  584. that we

  585. ourselves

  586. cannot atone

  587. for

  588. but Lord

  589. we thank you

  590. so much

  591. that you

  592. loved us

  593. that you

  594. sent your son

  595. that he

  596. came

  597. that he

  598. died

  599. in our

  600. place

  601. for our

  602. sins

  603. that he

  604. gave to you

  605. what was

  606. rightfully

  607. yours

  608. which was

  609. all of

  610. himself

  611. and so

  612. Lord

  613. would we

  614. trust him

  615. would we

  616. lean our

  617. whole life

  618. upon him

  619. and Father

  620. now those

  621. who are

  622. free

  623. free of

  624. sin

  625. would we

  626. give to

  627. you

  628. our

  629. lives

  630. our

  631. dreams

  632. our hopes

  633. our

  634. possessions

  635. our

  636. all

  637. because you

  638. Lord are

  639. worthy

  640. so come

  641. and take

  642. your rightful

  643. place in

  644. our lives

  645. we pray

  646. Amen
