  1. Well, please do have a seat and a very good morning to you.

  2. As I said, I've been on a Christians in Sport camp all week.

  3. I felt 30.

  4. Felt unfit.

  5. Hands up here if you've done a bleep test.

  6. Do you remember doing that at school?

  7. The fitness test called the bleep test.

  8. There's a fitness test that we do, and we did it at Christians in Sport on the last day of the camp.

  9. Leaders in, campers in, everybody in.

  10. Ross and Daniel beat me.

  11. And I'd love to say that that didn't bother me, but I'd be absolutely lying.

  12. I am not 16 anymore.

  13. I'm 30.

  14. Here we go.

  15. If you have a Bible, why don't you turn to 1 John chapter 2.

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  16. We're in it verses 3 to 14 this morning.

  17. 1 John, one of the books of the Bible, quite easy to find.

  18. If you go to Revelation right at the back of your Bibles and flick back a few, you'll find it there.

  19. So 1 John chapter 2, verses 3 to 14.

    1 John 2:3–14

  20. Why don't we pause just before we begin and let's pray together.

  21. Let's pray.

  22. Father God, we've just been singing about the deepness of your love for us.

  23. That all-excelling, costly, sacrificial love.

  24. And so we ask now that you would come and you would move that truth from our lips down to our hearts.

  25. That as we turn to look at your words now, your spirit would come and would help us to learn and would help us to love the Lord Jesus and the truth about him.

  26. And so it's in his name that we pray.

  27. Amen.

  28. So before diving into this passage this morning, why don't we just take a minute just to remind ourselves of the situation into which John is writing this letter.

  29. So John is writing to a very unsettled church congregation.

  30. Unsettled because they've witnessed a lot of people leave their church.

  31. Now I wonder at this side of the room, I wonder if I could ask you just to stand up for a minute.

  32. And I want you to turn and I want you to face the rest of the church.

  33. Now imagine John and I, first thing on Monday morning, we get an email from these guys collectively.

  34. And it says that they are resigning their memberships and they're leaving the church.

  35. So we're courteous.

  36. We ask them why.

  37. Why are they leaving the church?

  38. Maybe they've got a job somewhere else in the country.

  39. Maybe they're moving away.

  40. Maybe they've got a job somewhere else in the city and they just want to go and be part of a local church.

  41. Why are they leaving?

  42. And we get an email back and it says, actually we're leaving because, and it's got nothing to do with relocation.

  43. But we're leaving because you guys are actually holding us back in our Christian walk.

  44. You guys are the spiritual kindergarten.

  45. And to be honest, we pity you really.

  46. And we've moved on to greater things.

  47. In the email that comes back to us, they use phrases like,

  48. we've got an inside track on hearing from God that the rest of you don't have.

  49. We don't struggle with sin like the rest of you do.

  50. In fact, we've written a book called Ten Ways to Avoid Sin.

  51. Here's a signed copy of it.

  52. We know God.

  53. You don't.

  54. And so with a superiority complex in the minds,

  55. they wave goodbye

  56. to the church

  57. and

  58. out of the door they head.

  59. And they move

  60. into Burrowmure High School,

  61. just across the road there,

  62. and they start meeting, calling themselves

  63. the true Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  64. You can sit down now.

  65. But that is the situation

  66. into which John is writing.

  67. That's what's gone on in the church

  68. behind the scenes of this letter.

  69. Now question,

  70. if you were

  71. one of the ones that were staying in the church

  72. and you witnessed

  73. all of this go on in front of you,

  74. you heard what they were saying

  75. about the rest of you,

  76. what is the question

  77. that would be

  78. front and centre in your mind?

  79. What's the question?

  80. So if I were

  81. sitting in the pew,

  82. the question in my mind would be,

  83. are they right?

  84. Are they right?

  85. As I sit in the pew

  86. each Sunday morning,

  87. as I come to meet

  88. with my fellow believers

  89. during the week

  90. in a small group

  91. or whatever it is,

  92. how do I know

  93. that I'm right

  94. and they are wrong?

  95. How do I know

  96. that I'm backing

  97. the right team

  98. and have not just

  99. completely misunderstood

  100. this Christian thing?

  101. Maybe there is

  102. a natural higher progression

  103. from the gospel

  104. that I'm missing out on.

  105. The question,

  106. front and centre

  107. of their minds,

  108. would be,

  109. how do I know

  110. that I know God?

  111. How do I know

  112. when I witness this going on,

  113. how do I know

  114. that my faith

  115. is the real deal?

  116. You see,

  117. that is the question

  118. that's in the pews

  119. behind this letter.

  120. It is a massively

  121. unsettling time

  122. for this church family.

  123. Confidence shaking,

  124. certainty bruised,

  125. assurance flagging

  126. and probably lacking.

  127. How do I know,

  128. how can I be sure

  129. that I'm a genuine,

  130. bona fide,

  131. real deal Christian?

  132. Now,

  133. before our daughter

  134. Chloe was born,

  135. Alex and I

  136. had a good spring

  137. clean of her flat,

  138. we needed to make room

  139. for her room

  140. and one of the things

  141. that we found

  142. when we were going

  143. through all lots of clothes

  144. and throwing stuff out,

  145. I found my old watch.

  146. I found the watch

  147. that my dad had given me

  148. as a skinny 17 year old.

  149. I thought I'd lost it,

  150. I was absolutely delighted

  151. that I found it.

  152. But the thing is,

  153. when my dad,

  154. I remember when my dad

  155. gave me it

  156. as a 17 year old,

  157. I'll be honest,

  158. I didn't think

  159. it was a big deal.

  160. Thanks dad.

  161. But now as a 30 year old,

  162. when I come to find

  163. this watch,

  164. I'm intrigued.

  165. I want to know

  166. how this watch works,

  167. I want to know

  168. the mechanics of it.

  169. I want to know

  170. if it's the real deal.

  171. So I'm a 21st century man,

  172. I googled it,

  173. and lo and behold,

  174. what came up

  175. to test if your church,

  176. sorry,

  177. test if your watch

  178. is the real deal,

  179. what you look for

  180. is the word

  181. Swiss made

  182. on your watch.

  183. Tiny,

  184. tiny little letters,

  185. Swiss made.

  186. That's what separates

  187. a true watch

  188. from a false watch.

  189. That's how you know

  190. you've got the real deal

  191. and not just a pretender

  192. to the watch world.

  193. And lo and behold,

  194. I looked at my watch

  195. and there it was,

  196. Swiss made,

  197. tiny little letters.

  198. And I felt good

  199. because my dad

  200. hadn't slipped me a fake.

  201. But you see,

  202. that is what John

  203. is trying to do

  204. in this section

  205. this morning.

  206. You see,

  207. these people that are

  208. still in this church,

  209. the comments

  210. from this group

  211. have left them

  212. massively unsure

  213. about their faith.

  214. Is it the real deal?

  215. And what John

  216. is doing this morning

  217. is he's writing to them

  218. and he's saying,

  219. when I look at your lives,

  220. when I see how you behave,

  221. when I see your faith

  222. in action,

  223. you've got no need

  224. to question your faith.

  225. You have got Swiss made

  226. rent all over your lives.

  227. This is all about

  228. assurance this morning.

  229. And we've got to ask,

  230. how does John know that?

  231. Is he just kind of

  232. hopefully saying that

  233. to kind of cheer them up?

  234. How does he know that

  235. for sure?

  236. Answer,

  237. because their knowing

  238. is showing.

  239. Their knowing

  240. is showing.

  241. Their Christian lives

  242. are displaying

  243. certain traits

  244. that those who are

  245. the pretenders

  246. aren't showing.

  247. And what John

  248. is doing all the way

  249. through this section

  250. and through this letter

  251. as a whole,

  252. he's got a dual aim

  253. in mind.

  254. He's seeking to

  255. unmask and expose

  256. the pretenders

  257. and at the same time

  258. he's seeking to give

  259. great reassurance

  260. to the rest of the church.

  261. And the proof of the pudding

  262. this morning

  263. in our verses

  264. that John identifies

  265. is that they

  266. obey Jesus.

  267. They obey Jesus.

  268. And most particularly

  269. what they do

  270. is that they love

  271. the fellow brothers

  272. and sisters

  273. in the church.

  274. Their knowing

  275. is showing.

  276. Look at what he says

  277. about obedience

  278. to Jesus

  279. verses 3 to 6.

  280. John writes this,

  281. we know

  282. that we have come

  283. to know him.

  284. Do you see that phrase

  285. there?

  286. We know.

  287. We know that we have

  288. come to know them

  289. if we keep

  290. his commands.

  291. Whoever says

  292. I know him

  293. but does not do

  294. what he commands

  295. is a liar

  296. and the truth

  297. is not in that person.

  298. But if anyone

  299. obeys his words

  300. love for God

  301. is truly made

  302. complete in them.

  303. This is how we know

  304. that we are in him.

  305. Whoever claims

  306. to live in him

  307. must live

  308. as Jesus

  309. did.

  310. So the logic there

  311. if you follow it

  312. is quite simple

  313. isn't it?

  314. You claim to know God

  315. you do as he says.

  316. You claim to be

  317. living in the truth

  318. then you'll follow

  319. the one who is

  320. the truth

  321. Jesus Christ.

  322. You see

  323. true love for God

  324. says John

  325. shows itself

  326. not in mystical

  327. experience

  328. not in theological

  329. talk

  330. not in sentimental

  331. language

  332. but true love

  333. shows itself

  334. in nitty gritty

  335. self denying

  336. all encompassing

  337. obedience

  338. to what God

  339. has said.

  340. Look with me

  341. notice the speech

  342. marks around

  343. I know him

  344. at verse 4.

  345. Notice the phrases

  346. like whoever says

  347. or whoever claims

  348. at verse 4 and 6.

  349. If that's what you're

  350. hearing out of

  351. someone's mouth

  352. I imagine that's

  353. the precise claim

  354. that this group

  355. are making.

  356. If that's what you

  357. hear out their mouth

  358. but you see something

  359. completely different

  360. in action

  361. then you know

  362. you're dealing

  363. with a fake.

  364. What does he say?

  365. He's a liar.

  366. A strong language

  367. isn't it?

  368. He's a liar

  369. in whom the truth

  370. does not reside.

  371. You listen to him

  372. you obey.

  373. You talk the talk

  374. you back it up

  375. with the walk.

  376. That's how you'll know.

  377. That's how you know.

  378. You know God.

  379. I used to live

  380. down in Bristol

  381. for a few years

  382. and I had a friend

  383. down in Bristol

  384. who used to work

  385. for UCCF

  386. the University College

  387. Christian Fellowship

  388. and he told me

  389. this story one time

  390. about an American

  391. student mission team

  392. and they went up

  393. to the north of England

  394. somewhere

  395. I think it was Durham

  396. and they were intent

  397. on sharing the good news

  398. of the gospel

  399. all around campus

  400. and the guys

  401. from UCCF

  402. once the American team

  403. were back in America

  404. they phoned them

  405. and they asked

  406. for some feedback.

  407. How had it gone?

  408. And amazingly

  409. the American team

  410. reported that

  411. revival had hit Durham.

  412. All around the campus

  413. people were becoming

  414. Christians

  415. and the guys

  416. from UCCF

  417. looked at each other

  418. they heard this

  419. and they thought

  420. somebody's forgot to

  421. tell me

  422. it's not what they were

  423. seeing happen

  424. in front of them

  425. and do you know

  426. what had happened?

  427. The American mission team

  428. had gone around campus

  429. with a religious

  430. identification survey

  431. so all it said was

  432. which religion

  433. would you describe

  434. yourself as?

  435. Now you can picture that

  436. can't you?

  437. Hindu

  438. Sikh

  439. Muslim

  440. Christian

  441. you can imagine

  442. what most people

  443. think

  444. so the report

  445. had gone around

  446. when they got back

  447. to America

  448. that revival

  449. had hit

  450. but actually

  451. the guys in Durham

  452. knew that was

  453. a very different thing

  454. they ticked

  455. the Christian box

  456. but I dare say

  457. not all of those

  458. who ticked the Christian box

  459. would actually be

  460. committed followers

  461. of the Lord Jesus

  462. now the question

  463. how would you identify

  464. the true followers

  465. committed

  466. to the Lord Jesus?

  467. Well you'd look

  468. for something akin

  469. to what John is

  470. outlining here

  471. would you not?

  472. Obedience

  473. a heart

  474. inclination

  475. and a desire

  476. that wants to go

  477. with God

  478. that wants to obey

  479. his commands

  480. not live like the world

  481. lives

  482. somebody who is seeking

  483. to glorify God

  484. every day

  485. in their lives

  486. they're saying no

  487. to the desires

  488. of the world

  489. they're saying no

  490. to themselves

  491. and they're saying yes

  492. to God

  493. and his commands

  494. someone who is seeking

  495. to walk in the light

  496. and not persisting

  497. to walk in the darkness

  498. obedience

  499. that's how you'll know

  500. a Swiss made

  501. real deal believer

  502. really simple

  503. if you know him

  504. you'll obey

  505. and you see John

  506. as we move on here

  507. John doesn't leave them

  508. to figure out

  509. what that's going to look

  510. like in their situation

  511. remember this church

  512. situation that's going

  513. he tells them exactly

  514. what obedience

  515. will look like

  516. and he sharpens his focus

  517. it was quite general

  518. in that first section

  519. wasn't it?

  520. if you love him

  521. you'll obey

  522. now he focuses right in

  523. this is a sharp end

  524. of this section here

  525. what is it going

  526. to look like?

  527. well love

  528. is the commandment

  529. that John's got

  530. in view here

  531. and I think particularly

  532. in thinking of that

  533. verse from John 13

  534. that John read

  535. for us earlier

  536. he's thinking of this

  537. a new commandment

  538. I give to you

  539. love one another

  540. as I have loved you

  541. so you must love

  542. one another

  543. by this

  544. everyone will know

  545. that you are my disciples

  546. if you love

  547. one another

  548. so let's read

  549. verses 7 to 11

  550. let's see how he works

  551. that one out

  552. John writes this

  553. dear friends

  554. I am not writing

  555. to you a new command

  556. but an old one

  557. which you have had

  558. since the beginning

  559. this old command

  560. is the message

  561. you have heard

  562. yet I am writing

  563. you a new command

  564. its truth

  565. is seen in him

  566. and in you

  567. because the darkness

  568. is passing

  569. and the true light

  570. is already shining

  571. anyone who claims

  572. to be in the light

  573. but hates a brother

  574. or sister

  575. is still in darkness

  576. anyone who loves

  577. their brother and sister

  578. lives in the light

  579. and there is nothing

  580. in them to make them stumble

  581. but anyone who hates

  582. a brother or sister

  583. is in the darkness

  584. and walks around

  585. in the darkness

  586. they do not know

  587. where they are going

  588. because the darkness

  589. has blinded them

  590. so these people

  591. who have

  592. who have waved cheerio

  593. to the church

  594. this group here

  595. who are claiming

  596. to walk in the light

  597. but want nothing

  598. to do with this church

  599. family

  600. who they don't get on

  601. with

  602. John makes it crystal

  603. clear that

  604. that doesn't add up

  605. that's not how it works

  606. you cannot claim

  607. to walk in the light

  608. and yet walk

  609. in the darkness

  610. you cannot claim

  611. to love God

  612. and love his people

  613. and then have no regard

  614. for God's children

  615. and see the strong

  616. language that John

  617. uses there at verse 11

  618. it's a strong word

  619. isn't it

  620. it's one that we tell

  621. our children not to use

  622. hate

  623. and I think as John

  624. watches this scene

  625. unfolds in this church

  626. he sees that as the

  627. true reason that

  628. these people have left

  629. because to be honest

  630. they can't be bothered

  631. with the rest of you

  632. you're holding them back

  633. and John is saying

  634. if that's what's truly

  635. going on in somebody's life

  636. if that's what's going

  637. on in their heart

  638. then that's a telltale sign

  639. that they are not

  640. people who know

  641. God

  642. they're walking

  643. in the darkness

  644. and not

  645. in the light

  646. you see

  647. true light

  648. true knowledge

  649. of God

  650. a true heart

  651. that knows God

  652. will be marked

  653. by a radical love

  654. for others

  655. and I think that's

  656. what he means

  657. by this whole

  658. old commandment

  659. new commandment

  660. language

  661. it's a little bit

  662. confusing at first

  663. isn't it

  664. but the command

  665. to love God

  666. and others

  667. like we've sung

  668. it's always been

  669. part of the DNA

  670. of God's family

  671. isn't it

  672. but now in the Lord

  673. Jesus

  674. not only did he

  675. call it a new command

  676. but actually he

  677. invested in it

  678. such a deeper

  679. and richer meaning

  680. and he embodied it

  681. and the definition

  682. of love now

  683. is cross shaped

  684. and it's this love

  685. that is to mark

  686. the Christian community

  687. and so here

  688. it's a big challenge

  689. to all of us

  690. isn't it

  691. we need to see

  692. the link

  693. the inseparable link

  694. between our relationship

  695. with God

  696. and our relationship

  697. with others

  698. you want to put it

  699. another way

  700. I'm quite simple

  701. this is how I understand

  702. it

  703. my this way relationship

  704. should be the same

  705. as these way relationships

  706. you cannot separate

  707. your relationship

  708. with God

  709. and your relationships

  710. with your brothers

  711. and sisters in Christ

  712. the two are interconnected

  713. like Frank Sinatra said

  714. love and marriage

  715. they go together

  716. but that's what he's saying

  717. the gospel

  718. joins us together

  719. and the gospel

  720. compels us

  721. to love one another

  722. as Christ has loved us

  723. do you see

  724. we are connected

  725. in Christ

  726. as a church family

  727. the gospel

  728. has connected us

  729. in Christ

  730. therefore

  731. we care for one another

  732. we love one another

  733. we stick with

  734. one another

  735. we support one another

  736. why?

  737. because Jesus

  738. loves you

  739. and it's really

  740. as simple as that

  741. isn't it

  742. if you love him

  743. then you'll obey

  744. so there it is

  745. plain and simple

  746. from John

  747. those who walk

  748. in the darkness

  749. will be those

  750. who don't obey

  751. God's commands

  752. and who hate the brothers

  753. that's what you'll see

  754. in front of you

  755. that's how you'll know

  756. someone who truly

  757. knows God

  758. that's how you'll know

  759. him

  760. so what about these guys

  761. who've stayed in the church

  762. because it's been quite

  763. general up to this point

  764. hasn't it

  765. if this

  766. then this

  767. if this

  768. then this

  769. how does he

  770. diagnose

  771. these guys

  772. who are left

  773. in the church

  774. well at this section

  775. verses 12 to 14

  776. we get a cascade

  777. of reassurance

  778. and confidence

  779. are they the real deal

  780. remember that's the question

  781. we're asking

  782. are they the real deal

  783. you bet they're the real deal

  784. says John

  785. and I think what he's doing here

  786. is pulling a lot of the strands

  787. together from this first section

  788. that we've been looking at

  789. over the first few weeks

  790. this is the real Swiss made

  791. section of this passage

  792. verses 12 to 14

  793. let's read it together

  794. and see how this works out

  795. John writes this

  796. I am writing to you

  797. dear children

  798. because your sins

  799. have been forgiven

  800. on account of his name

  801. I am writing to you

  802. fathers

  803. because you know him

  804. who is from the beginning

  805. I am writing to you

  806. young men

  807. because you have

  808. overcome the evil one

  809. I write to you

  810. dear children

  811. because you know

  812. the father

  813. I write to you

  814. fathers

  815. because you know

  816. him who is from

  817. the beginning

  818. I write to you

  819. young men

  820. because you are strong

  821. and the word of God

  822. lives in you

  823. and you have

  824. overcome

  825. the evil one

  826. now here's what I think

  827. John is trying to do here

  828. we've got three groups

  829. of people in this

  830. little section here

  831. you'll notice that

  832. we've got children

  833. we've got fathers

  834. we've got young men

  835. and he addresses them

  836. twice doesn't he

  837. now that's quite unusual

  838. and I think when we see that

  839. in our Bibles

  840. when we see repetition

  841. when we see authors

  842. trying to do stuff like that

  843. it's

  844. we've got to hit the pause button

  845. why is he doing that

  846. why does he mention it twice

  847. does one not suffice

  848. well here's what I think

  849. he is doing here

  850. he's talking to the family of faith

  851. and the reason he does this

  852. is because what he's about

  853. to say here

  854. is something that they need

  855. to stop and think about

  856. and grasp

  857. this is important

  858. he's talking to the family of faith

  859. so by children

  860. I think he's thinking of new Christians

  861. children in the faith

  862. by young men

  863. I think he's addressing those

  864. who are developed

  865. in the faith

  866. by fathers

  867. I think he's thinking of those

  868. seasoned and mature

  869. in their faith

  870. so he's writing to the family of God

  871. now if you're struggling to picture

  872. what that looks like

  873. just look around

  874. is that not true

  875. of the family here

  876. do we not have people

  877. who've been Christians

  878. for maybe two months

  879. maybe you've been a Christian

  880. for two years

  881. maybe you've been a Christian

  882. for two decades

  883. it's the family of God

  884. isn't it

  885. and just look at with me

  886. because I think what we need to see

  887. is

  888. who he's addressing

  889. but more importantly

  890. what is he saying to them

  891. and look with me

  892. at some of the statements

  893. he makes to these groups

  894. your sins have been forgiven

  895. on account of his name

  896. you know him

  897. who is from the beginning

  898. you have overcome

  899. the evil one

  900. you know

  901. the father

  902. you know him

  903. who is from the beginning

  904. the word of God

  905. lives in you

  906. you have overcome

  907. the evil one

  908. now just think about that

  909. for a minute

  910. remember the situation

  911. he's writing to this group

  912. of Christians

  913. who've remained in this church

  914. who are unsettled

  915. who are questioning

  916. their faith

  917. who are questioning

  918. whether they can really trust

  919. the apostles gospel message

  920. that they've heard

  921. do we know God

  922. well look what he's saying

  923. he says to the family of faith

  924. regardless of whether

  925. you've been a Christian

  926. ten years

  927. ten minutes

  928. one year

  929. because your trust is in Jesus

  930. you've confessed your sins

  931. you're walking in the light

  932. you're loving

  933. your brothers and sisters

  934. you are the real deal

  935. you have it all

  936. forgiveness

  937. fellowship with God

  938. his word

  939. living in you

  940. victory over the evil one

  941. wonderful truths

  942. are they not

  943. imagine what it must have been like

  944. for that church family

  945. and then John writes this

  946. what wonderful assurance

  947. the benefits

  948. the truths

  949. of what it means

  950. to abide

  951. in Christ

  952. your life

  953. says John

  954. is tied up

  955. with his

  956. and these truths

  957. these glorious truths

  958. are yours

  959. because you are

  960. in Christ

  961. don't let anyone

  962. tell you that the gospel

  963. is not enough

  964. and what he's doing here

  965. is he's saying

  966. here is the test

  967. of what it looks like

  968. to live in the light

  969. and not in darkness

  970. and these guys over here

  971. the guys who have left

  972. they've failed

  973. you've passed

  974. you're the real deal

  975. what a wonderful assurance

  976. these words must have been

  977. I don't think we can

  978. fully understand it

  979. what wonderful assurance

  980. can you feel the confidence

  981. draining back into this church

  982. you've watched all this happen

  983. but what does this mean for us

  984. well I think just as we come to

  985. close this morning

  986. there's two applications

  987. that I want us to take away

  988. from this passage

  989. now I like the letter C

  990. I don't know why

  991. but both of these applications

  992. begin with the letter C

  993. there's a challenge

  994. in this passage

  995. and there's a great comfort

  996. in this passage

  997. firstly the challenge

  998. John is telling this group

  999. of Christians

  1000. that he's confident

  1001. that the real deal

  1002. why?

  1003. because their knowing

  1004. is showing

1005. and it begs the question

  1006. doesn't it?

  1007. is our knowing

  1008. showing?

  1009. with people who

1010. look in at our lives

1011. people from outside the church

1012. as they look at our lives

  1013. would they see

  1014. do they see

  1015. a living faith

  1016. in the Lord Jesus?

  1017. are we people

1018. who are striving to be

  1019. not those who just

  1020. tick the Christian box

  1021. but actually those

  1022. whose hearts tick

1023. with the sound of the gospel?

  1024. are we those

  1025. who live lives radically

  1026. that are cross shaped?

  1027. are we radical

  1028. in our obedience

  1029. to the Lord

  1030. even when it doesn't

  1031. make sense?

1032. even when we add it up

  1033. it doesn't make sense

  1034. even when it doesn't

  1035. look pretty

1036. even when it costs us

  1037. are we those

1038. who are staking it all

  1039. to follow Jesus?

  1040. and notice that word

  1041. that he uses there

  1042. at verse 6

  1043. abide

  1044. and I ask myself

  1045. as I read this

1046. and prepared for this week

  1047. am I one

  1048. who is making

  1049. every effort

  1050. to abide

  1051. in Christ?

  1052. Christ

  1053. now what does that

  1054. look like?

1055. would you want to know

  1056. something that I found

  1057. out this week?

  1058. I don't know whether

  1059. I'm coming ridiculously

  1060. late to the party

  1061. here or not

  1062. but I found out

  1063. what HMB stands for

  1064. does anyone know

  1065. what HMB stands for?

  1066. put your hands up

1067. right so I am coming

1068. late to the party here

  1069. right

1070. every day is a school day

  1071. it's great

  1072. so I never knew

  1073. what HMB stood for

  1074. but it stands for

  1075. his master's voice

  1076. doesn't it?

  1077. and again

  1078. googled it

  1079. what does it mean?

  1080. well here's the logo

  1081. it's the dog

  1082. and the gramophone

  1083. and the story goes

  1084. that the dog's name

  1085. is Nipper

  1086. it's a great name

1087. it has to be said

  1088. and the story goes

  1089. that Nipper's owner

  1090. Mark died

  1091. and his brother

  1092. Francis

  1093. from Mark

  1094. inherited three things

  1095. he inherited the dog

  1096. he inherited the gramophone

1097. and he inherited some recordings

  1098. of Mark

1099. when he used to sing

  1100. and

  1101. Francis noticed

  1102. that when he put

  1103. the recordings

  1104. on

  1105. on the gramophone

  1106. the dog would drop

  1107. everything

1108. and would come and sit

  1109. and listen

1110. he just loved being there

  1111. and that's where HMB

  1112. comes from

  1113. I didn't know that

  1114. but it's a great

  1115. illustration isn't it?

  1116. because

  1117. let's ask ourselves

  1118. this morning

  1119. are we listening

  1120. to the master's voice?

  1121. is there

  1122. a loving

  1123. relationship

  1124. there

  1125. of obedience?

  1126. if

  1127. when there's all

  1128. the noises in life

  1129. when it comes down

1130. to the crunch of it

1131. where would you want to be?

  1132. are you somebody

  1133. who wants to be

1134. right at the master's feet?

  1135. listening to the

  1136. master's voice?

  1137. are you reading

  1138. your bible

  1139. to hear

  1140. what God

  1141. is saying

  1142. in his words?

  1143. are you exposing

  1144. yourself to his voice

  1145. at every single

  1146. given opportunity?

  1147. because in order

  1148. to obey

  1149. we need to know

  1150. what he's saying

  1151. don't we?

  1152. you see the people

  1153. who have left

  1154. this church

  1155. they're like dogs

  1156. who are running

  1157. after novelties

  1158. even though they

  1159. claim to be

  1160. listening to the master

  1161. John knows

  1162. that they're not

  1163. because if they were

  1164. they'd be obeying

  1165. what he was saying

  1166. I know

  1167. that you are

  1168. listening to the

  1169. master's voice

  1170. because not only

  1171. are you there

  1172. listening to it

  1173. but you're obeying

  1174. him

  1175. are we those

  1176. who are abiding

  1177. in Jesus?

  1178. are we making

  1179. every effort

  1180. to abide in him?

  1181. is our knowing

  1182. showing?

  1183. and I think especially

  1184. let's kick it up

  1185. a gear

  1186. especially in the way

  1187. that we are

  1188. with one another

  1189. are we those

  1190. who demonstrate

  1191. this radical love

  1192. to each other

  1193. that Jesus spoke about?

  1194. would the world

  1195. looking in at us

  1196. would they see us

  1197. as the real deal

1198. by the way that we love

1199. and we care for one another

1200. by the way that we stick

  1201. with one another

  1202. through thick and thin

1203. by the way that we

  1204. encourage one another

1205. you know I was challenged

  1206. this week

1207. do I play it safe

1208. with the way I love?

1209. when somebody in this family

1210. when they rub you up

  1211. the wrong way

  1212. what's your reaction?

1213. do you run a mile?

1214. or do you stick with them?

  1215. do you love them?

1216. do you pray for them?

1217. do you care for them?

1218. and do you love them again?

  1219. simply because

  1220. they are your brother

  1221. and sister

  1222. in Christ

1223. you know when was the last time

  1224. on a Sunday morning

  1225. you spoke to somebody

1226. who was not like you?

  1227. you spoke to them

  1228. and the primary motivation

1229. for you speaking to them

1230. was simply that you wanted

  1231. to love them

  1232. and encourage them

1233. and to spur them on

1234. John knows that this church

1235. they walk in the light

  1236. because they listen

  1237. and they obey

  1238. their loving

  1239. is showing

1240. so there's the first scene

  1241. second scene

1242. and we'll finish with this

  1243. see the comfort

1244. that these verses are to us

  1245. John is writing

  1246. to this church

  1247. and he's saying

1248. no matter what's being said

  1249. over here

  1250. you've got everything

  1251. in Jesus

  1252. what the departed

  1253. are claiming

  1254. let's be honest

  1255. it looks quite impressive

  1256. doesn't it?

  1257. victory over sin

  1258. new insights into God

  1259. higher spiritual knowledge

  1260. of God

  1261. victory over sin

  1262. I mean that sounds

  1263. impressive

1264. and I bet those who stayed

1265. they looked at their own lives

  1266. having hearing all this

1267. they looked at their own lives

  1268. and they felt

  1269. seriously deflated

  1270. I long for that

  1271. and I wonder if that's true

  1272. in your own life

  1273. as well

  1274. do you

  1275. feel that

  1276. in your Christian life?

  1277. let's take it on a

  1278. global sense first

1279. do you look at the church

  1280. in Edinburgh?

1281. do you look at the 2%

  1282. of this population

1283. that goes to an evangelical church

1284. under the scent of the gospel?

1285. and then do you look

1286. at the size of the city?

1287. do you look at the size

  1288. of the nation

  1289. of Scotland?

  1290. and you think

  1291. boy we are seriously

  1292. not impressed

  1293. do you look then

  1294. at your own life

  1295. and you still struggle

  1296. with sin?

  1297. you are so aware

1298. of it in your life

1299. you know where you want

1300. to be in your Christian walk

1301. but you can never seem

  1302. to get there

1303. and you think to yourself

  1304. why can I not

  1305. just

  1306. shrug this one off?

1307. I wonder if you feel like that

  1308. do you feel deflated

  1309. in your faith?

1310. let me ask you a simple question

  1311. are you more aware

1312. or are you less aware

  1313. of your sin

1314. since you became a Christian?

  1315. I don't know if you're like me

1316. I am massively more aware

  1317. of my sin

  1318. of my shortcomings

  1319. now that I'm a Christian

  1320. than I was before

1321. and we can feel deflated

1322. but I think the assurance

  1323. in this passage

1324. is if you feel like that

1325. then that is what it looks like

1326. to be in the light

  1327. because you see

  1328. this isn't about us

  1329. being perfect

  1330. this is about Jesus

  1331. this isn't about me

  1332. this is about him

1333. this isn't about my kingdom

1334. this is about his kingdom

1335. and Christ is all we need

  1336. he is all sufficient

  1337. he is all powerful

1338. it is all about him

  1339. because Jesus

  1340. he isn't just a good start

  1341. in your Christian walk

1342. actually he's the every breath

  1343. of your Christian walk

1344. we have everything in him

  1345. forgiveness

  1346. fellowship with God

1347. his spirit living in us

  1348. final victory

  1349. all in him

1350. because we abide in Christ

  1351. now maybe you're here

  1352. this morning

  1353. and actually

  1354. you're not

  1355. abiding in Jesus

1356. well can I just point out

1357. to you from this passage

  1358. lovingly

  1359. that actually

  1360. outside of him

  1361. there is no assurance

  1362. there is no forgiveness

1363. there is no final victory

1364. and you need to repent

  1365. you need to stop

1366. and you need to turn

1367. and you need to start

  1368. walking towards him

1369. you need to put your faith

  1370. in him

1371. and you need to follow

  1372. Jesus

  1373. but if you are

  1374. trusting in him

  1375. this morning

  1376. then see the wonderful

  1377. assurance that we have

  1378. from these verses

  1379. and see to it

1380. that you never move on

  1381. from the glorious

  1382. gospel of Christ

  1383. Charles Spurgeon

  1384. one of my heroes

  1385. he said this

  1386. we hope to understand

  1387. the truth better

  1388. but we shall never

  1389. discover better truth

  1390. let me ask you

  1391. honestly as we come

  1392. to a close

  1393. does Jesus

  1394. does the gospel

  1395. does it still

  1396. thrill your heart

  1397. does Jesus

  1398. still move your heart

  1399. to sing

  1400. have you grown cold

  1401. in your affection

  1402. for him

  1403. in your understanding

  1404. of the gospel

  1405. are you tempted

  1406. to move on

  1407. to seemingly

  1408. greater things

  1409. have you become

  1410. distracted

  1411. by something else

  1412. and allowed it

  1413. to push the gospel

  1414. from the centre

  1415. of your life

  1416. well can I

  1417. encourage you

  1418. as we close

  1419. we never move on

  1420. from the gospel

  1421. we never move on

  1422. from the gospel

  1423. but we do

  1424. gaze deeper

  1425. into it

  1426. it is glorious

  1427. not that we are

  1428. glorious

  1429. but that he

  1430. is glorious

  1431. now we're going to

1432. stand in just a second

  1433. and finish

  1434. by singing

1435. all glory be to Christ

  1436. let me just read

  1437. some of the lyrics

  1438. to you

  1439. and then we'll stand

  1440. to sing this together

1441. all glory be to Christ

  1442. our king

1443. all glory be to Christ

  1444. his rule and reign

  1445. will ever sing

1446. all glory be to Christ

  1447. his will be done

  1448. his kingdom come

  1449. on earth

  1450. as is above

  1451. who is himself

  1452. our daily bread

  1453. praise him

  1454. the lord

  1455. of love

  1456. all glory

  1457. be to Christ

  1458. our king

1459. all glory be to Christ

  1460. his rule

  1461. and reign

  1462. will ever sing

  1463. all glory

  1464. be to Christ

  1465. amen

  1466. amen

  1467. let's pray together

  1468. oh father god

  1469. we are so thankful

  1470. so thankful

  1471. for our time

  1472. together this morning

  1473. as we've gazed

  1474. at the glorious gospel

  1475. as we've gazed

  1476. at the glorious Christ

  1477. and it's our prayer

  1478. this week

1479. that you would help us

  1480. to be those

  1481. who live

  1482. and love

  1483. as those who

  1484. truly treasure

  1485. Jesus Christ

  1486. in our lives

  1487. may we seek

  1488. your kingdom first

  1489. so help us lord

  1490. to be ever looking

  1491. to him

  1492. and his victory

1493. and to find our identity

  1494. in him this week

  1495. we pray

  1496. amen

  1497. peace

  1498. rem露

  1499. and

  1500. amen

  1501. why

  1502. and

  1503. so

  1504. and

  1505. so

  1506. you

  1507. ah
