  1. Good morning everyone. Excellent. What an encouraging and exciting morning. John and I, our summer project for this year was Delve and we are so excited about it.

  2. Regardless of whether there was a PowerPoint or not, John had fireworks and stuff coming up. I saw it earlier. He was gutted he didn't get that PowerPoint.

  3. Delve, get involved. It is excellent. Fantastic to get reading Mark's Gospel together. Get involved. Pick up your copy before you go this morning.

  4. Continuing on with the excitement, we are starting a new series this morning that's going to take us the next three Sunday mornings.

  5. Looking at this thing that we call church.

  6. One of you have ever asked yourself that question, why do we do this thing on a Sunday morning?

  7. What does it mean to be part of a church?

  8. With that in mind, why don't you turn to Acts, the book of Acts chapters 1 and chapters 2.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  9. And let's pray.

  10. And let's ask that God would help us this morning as we turn to his words.

  11. Let's pray together.

  12. Father God, we love you.

  13. And we thank you for our time together this morning.

  14. And we ask now that as we turn to your words, the Bible,

  15. as we think about this thing called church, that you would teach us by your spirit.

  16. Would you give us ears to hear?

  17. Would you give us minds to learn?

  18. Would you give us hearts to absorb and to love you more?

  19. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  20. Amen.

  21. So you've been quiet this morning.

  22. Why don't you turn to your neighbor just before we kick this off for 30 seconds.

  23. What brought you to church this morning?

  24. 30 seconds.

  25. Go for it.

  26. Okay, excellent.

  27. Going to rattle on this morning.

  28. I would love to know what you said.

  29. Maybe you're a student here this morning.

  30. I do look around and I see students.

  31. Normally they're over here, but I see them branching out over this way.

  32. It's great.

  33. Did you come for the free lunch?

  34. Maybe.

  35. Maybe you came because you love the singing.

  36. The band were great this morning.

  37. I loved it.

  38. Maybe you came because you like the teaching.

  39. Maybe you came because you like the sense of community.

  40. Your friends are here.

  41. Or maybe this is just something, church, that you've always done.

  42. What is this thing called church?

  43. And as we turn to Acts chapter 1 and 2, so this is the story of the early church.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  44. That's the question we're going to ask these people that we meet.

  45. What is this thing called church?

  46. What does it mean to them to do church?

  47. Here's the thing for us this morning.

  48. You speak to these early Christians.

  49. They're not talking about coffee or cake.

  50. Right at its core.

  51. The reason that they meet together is to celebrate the fact that there was a man who lived and a man who died and a man who rose again.

  52. Certified dead on the third day.

  53. Smashed death to smithereens.

  54. And that changes everything.

  55. Everything.

  56. Life as they know it, flipped upside down.

  57. Jesus is the reason.

  58. Not that they go to church.

  59. It's not something that you go to.

  60. Jesus is the reason that they are church.

  61. And here's the big idea for us this morning.

  62. The gospel.

  63. So there's good news about Jesus that we'll come on to see what it is.

  64. The gospel births the church.

  65. Church isn't a social club.

  66. It's not a time for a get together for a jolly sing song on a Sunday.

  67. Church is about Jesus.

  68. You see, the elders of this church, we didn't wake up one morning and have an inclination to meet together publicly.

  69. No, not a chance.

  70. The church is a people that God has birthed through the gospel.

  71. Here's what we're going to do this morning.

  72. We're going to go on a whistle-stop tour of Acts chapter 1 and 2.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  73. And I want us to see this.

  74. And I want us to love this.

  75. So this is going to require us to have eyes wide open.

  76. Fingers at the ready.

  77. A bit of a paper chase.

  78. But here's what's going on in Acts chapter 1 and chapter 2.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  79. The book of Acts, written by Dr. Luke.

  80. The sequel to his gospel.

  81. And it's really the story of all that Jesus continued to do after his resurrection.

  82. It's the story of the unstoppable gospel as it reaches and it grips the world.

  83. Here's what happens from verse 1.

  84. Look with me.

  85. Verse 1.

  86. In my former book.

  87. So there's the sequel thing, right?

  88. In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

  89. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proof that he was alive.

  90. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  91. So who is this book of Acts about?

  92. It's about Jesus.

  93. Jesus, who suffered, says Luke.

  94. Did you notice that?

  95. He suffered.

  96. He was certified dead.

  97. But he presented himself alive.

  98. And convincingly so.

  99. He is not dead.

  100. He's alive.

  101. And it wasn't a magic trick.

  102. It wasn't a delusion.

  103. It was convincing.

  104. This is what Luke is saying to this man, Theophilus, who he's investigating all this stuff for, that he's looked into this.

  105. That he's asked people.

  106. And it wasn't a one-off appearance.

  107. Jesus appeared.

  108. Many proofs over 40 days.

  109. Theophilus, we're not dealing in the realm of ideas here.

  110. We are dealing in the realm of fact.

  111. Here's the thing.

  112. Jesus is still dead.

  113. If you can go to Jerusalem somewhere and you can find his skeleton,

  114. then church as we know it, Christianity stops here.

  115. Stone dead.

  116. Killed.

  117. But Jesus is alive.

  118. And that changes everything.

  119. Let me ask you this morning.

  120. What do you make of that?

  121. Jesus is alive.

  122. I remember when I was a teenager.

  123. When I was thinking through all of these things.

  124. This is what it rested on for me.

  125. Thought through it.

  126. If Jesus, regardless of what he did, if he claimed to be the son of God,

  127. and if he said he was going to defeat death and he didn't,

  128. then he isn't a wise teacher.

  129. He's an absolute fraud.

  130. He's not worth following on Twitter, let alone with my life.

  131. But, but if he did rise from the dead, then I concluded two things.

  132. Firstly, it's got to be worth my time to look into it and investigate it.

  133. Consider the evidence.

  134. Secondly, if that is true, if he did rise from the dead, my life can't remain the same.

  135. It just can't.

  136. How could my life remain the same?

  137. If Jesus holds the keys of death and life in his hands,

  138. then I need to hang all of my life on every word that he said.

  139. Friends, where are you with this this morning?

  140. Do you see, regardless of what you think, that you cannot remain neutral to this news?

  141. Here's what Tim Keller writes.

  142. Guy I love to read, a Christian author.

  143. He says this.

  144. If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said.

  145. If he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said?

  146. The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching,

  147. but whether or not he rose from the dead.

  148. So do you see what Luke is saying here?

  149. Theophilus, Jesus is alive.

  150. And Jesus talked to his disciples.

  151. What does Jesus tell them to do?

  152. We'll look at verse 8.

  153. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you,

  154. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria

  155. and to the ends of the earth.

  156. So Jesus says to these men who have seen and heard,

  157. go and tell.

  158. Now remember who Jesus is talking to here.

  159. He's talking to the disciples, which would be the 11 of them at this point.

  160. And see the thing is, as you read through the gospel accounts of Jesus' life,

  161. these are not men with spine, right?

  162. As you read it through, looking at Peter for example,

  163. in terms of his standing up for Jesus,

  164. the slightest interrogation of a little girl,

  165. and he falls to pieces, doesn't he?

  166. See, if I was to pick my dream team for world domination,

  167. this would not be my starting 11.

  168. They just wouldn't.

  169. Now as a boy, I remember I used to play top trumps.

  170. Someone else used to play top trumps as a kid?

  171. Come on, show me your hands.

  172. We're not embarrassed here.

  173. Excellent.

  174. So this is what used to happen with top trumps.

  175. Your card,

  176. your character on the card,

  177. had certain attributes out of 10,

  178. and you had to beat your opposition with your,

  179. you had to trump them, you get the idea.

  180. I like to think of the disciples like top trumps.

  181. They would have the lowest stats possible.

  182. You'd be gutted when you flipped that over.

  183. Think about it, right?

  184. Bravery, 1 out of 10.

  185. Faith, 2 out of 10.

  186. Anticipation, 0.5 out of 10.

  187. I mean, you're losing all the time with these guys.

  188. So when Jesus says,

  189. go, knowing what I know about them,

  190. I'm not that optimistic for them.

  191. But what does Jesus say to them?

  192. Look at this carefully.

  193. This bunch of unspectacular men.

  194. Where's the power going to come from?

  195. It's not going to come from them.

  196. It's going to come from him.

  197. Jesus will send his spirit.

  198. The spirit will give them power.

  199. And the spirit will enable them,

  200. give them boldness to speak.

  201. And they will be his witnesses.

  202. Now working in the legal profession for a few years,

  203. I love the term witness.

  204. I know what it means.

  205. We all know what it means, doesn't it?

  206. It means to tell what you've seen.

  207. It's basically what it is.

  208. Tell what you know.

  209. And that's what Jesus is saying to his disciples here.

  210. Go and witness.

  211. Go and make me known.

  212. And notice where they are to do this.

  213. Jerusalem.

  214. And in all Judea and Samaria.

  215. And to the ends of the earth.

  216. In other words, where they are,

  217. the regions round about them,

  218. and as far as they can possibly go.

  219. This thing is going global.

  220. The news that Jesus is alive is for everyone.

  221. What happens next in the narrative?

  222. Jesus ascends.

  223. And Jesus sends his spirit.

  224. And we get that scene at Pentecost.

  225. Halfway through chapter 2,

  226. God's spirit falls on them.

  227. And speaking in different languages,

  228. they declare the mighty works of God

  229. to the watching world.

  230. And Peter stands

  231. and addresses the confused and mocking crowd.

  232. And he delivers what I guess is the first distinctly

  233. Christian sermon.

  234. Look at it from verse 22.

  235. Remember this guy who fell to jelly?

  236. He's now addressing a crowd.

  237. What a difference.

  238. Here's what he says.

  239. Fellow Israelites,

  240. listen to this.

  241. That's brave, isn't it?

  242. Listen to this.

  243. Jesus of Nazareth was a man

  244. accredited by God to you by miracles,

  245. wonders and signs,

  246. which God did among you through him,

  247. as you yourselves know.

  248. This man was handed over to you

  249. by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge.

  250. And you, with the help of wicked men,

  251. put him to death

  252. by nailing him to the cross.

  253. I mean, he's pulling no punches there,

  254. isn't he?

  255. No punches.

  256. This guy who turned to jelly

  257. is now accusing the crowd

  258. of crucifying Jesus.

  259. Jesus, this man that you saw,

  260. you saw him do miracles.

  261. You've heard about him.

  262. You killed him.

  263. And hang on a second, Peter.

  264. Put yourself in the crowd at this point.

  265. Hands up if you would have objected

  266. to what Peter said there.

  267. I would have objected massively.

  268. And do you know why?

  269. Because I wasn't in the crowd.

  270. I didn't kill Jesus.

  271. Did everyone who was in that crowd

  272. physically kill Jesus?

  273. Did they all physically drive the nails

  274. into his hands and his feet?

  275. Some of them weren't even on town

  276. probably on that day.

  277. And yet what does Peter say?

  278. You crucified him.

  279. Now how does that work?

  280. How does that work?

  281. Well, the Bible would say

  282. that you and I are sinners.

  283. That you and I are guilty

  284. of falling short of God's glory.

  285. By our very nature,

  286. we are in rebellion against him.

  287. We don't want anything to do with him.

  288. We don't want anything to do with him.

  289. We want everything to do

  290. with ourselves.

  291. Now I wonder if you know

  292. that's true in your life.

  293. I was reminded of it this week.

  294. Here's how this worked out in my life.

  295. I study two mornings a week.

  296. Many of you won't know this.

  297. I study two mornings a week

  298. at Edinburgh Theological Seminary.

  299. The artist formerly known

  300. as the Free Church College.

  301. Two mornings a week I do that.

  302. And BBC Alba,

  303. so the Gaelic TV channel.

  304. How's your Gaelic this morning?

  305. Mine's not very good.

  306. BBC Alba did a documentary

  307. on our class last year.

  308. And they did a documentary

  309. specifically focusing

  310. on the free church candidates

  311. that were going through the system.

  312. BBC Alba produced this documentary.

  313. It went out a couple of weeks ago.

  314. There's four of them.

  315. Four half an hour episodes.

  316. They got that much out of our year.

  317. Four half an hour episodes.

  318. And on these episodes,

  319. when I watched it,

  320. my classmates,

  321. as they're being interviewed,

  322. are pouring out their lives

  323. in front of the camera.

  324. Really interesting.

  325. My family have suffered

  326. because I've decided to do this.

  327. Financially,

  328. I've suffered

  329. because I've chosen

  330. to take a step out of work

  331. and pursue God's calling.

  332. I mean,

  333. this was really emotional stuff

  334. on this camera.

  335. But here's my question for you.

  336. As they followed us

  337. around the classroom,

  338. these boys around the classroom,

  339. who do you think

  340. I was looking for

  341. the whole time?

  342. Go on.

  343. Me.

  344. Right?

  345. I love me.

  346. My back of my head

  347. made two appearances

  348. in those four episodes.

  349. And here's the thing.

  350. Each time I was watching

  351. it on my laptop,

  352. I paused it

  353. and I shouted through to Alex,

  354. Alex,

  355. I'm on the telly.

  356. Every time,

  357. back of my head.

  358. I don't even speak Gaelic.

  359. Chloe told her,

  360. our little seven-month-old daughter,

  361. wasn't that fussed.

  362. But do we not know that

  363. to be true in our lives?

  364. Think about your own life.

  365. Think about the orbit

  366. of your own life.

  367. Who does it revolve around?

  368. Are you like me?

  369. We're all like me.

  370. Aren't we all the same?

  371. Does our lives not orbit

  372. around ourselves?

  373. Are we not infatuated

  374. with ourselves?

  375. We love us.

  376. We do not love God.

  377. We are sinners.

  378. And that sin

  379. has separated us from God.

  380. And that is serious.

  381. And if it wasn't true,

  382. friends,

  383. this morning,

  384. then Jesus wouldn't have

  385. had to come

  386. to earth

  387. and to die.

  388. It was our sin

  389. that put him there.

  390. Now many of you

  391. will remember,

  392. maybe,

  393. Mel Gibson

  394. had a film out

  395. a few years ago,

  396. I think it was

  397. maybe ten years ago now,

  398. called The Passion of the Christ.

  399. I wonder if you've watched it.

  400. I remember going to the cinema

  401. and it's one of only two films

  402. I can remember in my life

  403. where it stopped

  404. and nobody's moved

  405. at the end of the film.

  406. Passion of the Christ.

  407. Mel Gibson directed it.

  408. He wasn't in one single,

  409. he wasn't in many scenes,

  410. but he was in one scene.

  411. He,

  412. it was his hand

  413. that drove the nail

  414. into Jesus' hands

  415. in the film.

  416. And he wanted to make

  417. a statement

  418. as if to say

  419. he had some responsibility

  420. for what happened

  421. at Calvary.

  422. Friends,

  423. it was our sin

  424. that put him there.

  425. And the cross,

  426. it finds us out.

  427. And I find that truth

  428. to be so liberating

  429. and here's why.

  430. I remember when I was

  431. saving up for an engagement ring.

  432. Alex had been going out

  433. with her for a year

  434. and she's far too good for me.

  435. I was punching a well

  436. above my weight.

  437. I decided this is a deal

  438. that I want to seal.

  439. And I looked

  440. at an engagement ring

  441. and I booked

  442. at the price

  443. of an engagement ring.

  444. And not long after

  445. coming out of uni,

  446. I decided that I was

  447. going to have to make

  448. some cost-cutting measures

  449. in my life.

  450. And one of the ways

  451. that I was going to save money

  452. was that I was going

  453. to cut my own hair.

  454. Has anyone tried that before?

  455. Cutting their own,

  456. not get someone else

  457. to cut your hair,

  458. cutting your own hair.

  459. Genius, I know.

  460. And here is what happened.

  461. I lived my life

  462. at work.

  463. I lived my life

  464. with my friends

  465. and nobody ever

  466. commented on it.

  467. But secretly,

  468. I gasped.

  469. It was a state.

  470. Now I wonder if you've

  471. ever had an experience

  472. like that.

  473. You've tried to apply

  474. mascara at about

  475. six in the morning

  476. and just forgot about it.

  477. Big streams down

  478. your eyes.

  479. Maybe this is what

  480. happens to me all the time.

  481. With a little girl,

  482. I find breakfast,

  483. her breakfast,

  484. randomly on me.

  485. This is what happens.

  486. Now what do you need

  487. if you know what that's like?

  488. What do you need

  489. in that situation?

  490. You need somebody

  491. to lovingly

  492. point it out.

  493. Don't you?

  494. Somebody to lovingly

  495. point it out.

  496. Here's what happened

  497. to me when this happened.

  498. I turned up to meet Alex

  499. after I cut my own hair

  500. a few times

  501. and she looks at it.

  502. One look.

  503. It's all she needed.

  504. One look.

  505. That looks ridiculous.

  506. If this is going to work,

  507. that's going to change.

  508. She didn't put it like that.

  509. But do we not know

  510. that to be true?

  511. We need somebody

  512. to tell us the truth.

  513. I need the truth.

  514. I don't need sugar coating.

  515. I've got a sweet tooth

  516. enough as it is.

  517. I need somebody

  518. to tell me

  519. exactly how it is.

  520. I cannot work

  521. with a lie.

  522. But the truth,

  523. regardless of how

  524. soul destroying it is

  525. and how much your pride

  526. is affected,

  527. the truth,

  528. you can work

  529. with the truth.

  530. truth.

  531. And that's why

  532. I love the Bible.

  533. It's why

  534. I love God's Word

  535. because God's Word

  536. gives us the ultimate

  537. reality check.

  538. We've used that phrase,

  539. don't we,

  540. all the time in our culture

  541. if somebody gets

  542. a reality check.

  543. If you're English here

  544. this morning,

  545. you'll know that your

  546. rugby team got one

  547. a few weeks ago.

  548. And speaking as a Scot,

  549. you'll know that Australia

  550. are about to get one

  551. this afternoon.

  552. A reality check.

  553. That's what God's Word

  554. gives us as we come to it.

  555. That I am not an accident.

  556. I am not the product

  557. of an impersonal universe.

  558. I, you and I,

  559. are fearfully

  560. and wonderfully made.

  561. We are valued.

  562. Why?

  563. Because we were made

  564. in God's image.

  565. We are loved.

  566. I am more loved

  567. than I am ever capable

  568. of grasping.

  569. But here's the thing.

  570. At the same time,

  571. I am more broken

  572. than I ever think

  573. I'll realize.

  574. My sin has separated

  575. me from God.

  576. That sin needs dealt with

  577. and that's a massive

  578. reality check.

  579. I am beautifully made

  580. but I am broken.

  581. And God,

  582. in His grace,

  583. offers the solution.

  584. Do you not know that

  585. to be true

  586. in your own life?

  587. I know that to be true.

  588. I found this so liberating

  589. at the time.

  590. I know my tendency

  591. to selfishness.

  592. I know my thoughts.

  593. I know my hearts.

  594. And as I come to God's word,

  595. God's word puts all the cards

  596. on the table.

  597. It says,

  598. I am beautiful

  599. and yet I am broken.

  600. And I found that

  601. the most liberating truth.

  602. That God knows

  603. what's going on

  604. inside of me.

  605. He knows the numbers

  606. of hairs on my head.

  607. He knows the depths

  608. of my heart.

  609. And He loves me enough

  610. to point it out.

  611. my sin

  612. put Jesus there.

  613. How does that make you

  614. feel this morning?

  615. Isn't it not massively

  616. interesting

  617. when we compare

  618. what God's word says

  619. to what our culture says?

  620. We hear this stuff

  621. all the time

  622. that you and I,

  623. we can define ourselves.

  624. We can just live

  625. how we want.

  626. We can be who we want

  627. to be

  628. and it's okay

  629. that we deserve

  630. the best,

  631. that nobody should stand

  632. in the way

  633. of our personal happiness.

  634. And friends,

  635. my question to you

  636. this morning

  637. is which voice

  638. are you going

  639. to listen to?

  640. The flattering one

  641. or the honest one?

  642. God's word

  643. tells us

  644. what it's like.

  645. It gives us

  646. the ultimate reality check.

  647. It gives us

  648. the diagnosis.

  649. But praise God,

  650. He also gives us

  651. the prescription.

  652. Back into Acts,

  653. look at verse 24

  654. of chapter 2.

  655. This is still

  656. Peter going at it here.

  657. What does he say?

  658. But God raised him

  659. from the dead,

  660. freeing him

  661. from the agony

  662. of death

  663. because it was

  664. impossible

  665. for death

  666. to keep its hold

  667. on him.

  668. What's this book about?

  669. Who is this book about?

  670. Jesus,

  671. the risen champion.

  672. How does that

  673. make you feel?

  674. Given everything

  675. that we've seen before,

  676. how does it

  677. make you feel?

  678. Well,

  679. let's look at

  680. the crowd's reaction.

  681. How did they feel

  682. when they hear

  683. this message?

  684. Verse 37.

  685. When the people

  686. heard this,

  687. they were cut

  688. to the heart

  689. and said to Peter

  690. and the other apostles,

  691. brothers,

  692. what shall we do?

  693. Peter replied,

  694. repent

  695. and be baptized

  696. every one of you

  697. in the name

  698. of Jesus Christ

  699. for the forgiveness

  700. of your sins

  701. and you will receive

  702. the gift

  703. of the Holy Spirit.

  704. The promise

  705. is for you

  706. and your children

  707. and for all

  708. who are far off,

  709. for all

  710. whom the Lord

  711. our God

  712. will call.

  713. How did they feel

  714. cut to the heart?

  715. And do you see

  716. how they do not

  717. remain neutral

  718. to what Peter

  719. has been saying?

  720. They do not sit

  721. on the fence.

  722. They repent.

  723. What it means

  724. is just in their life,

  725. they did a 180.

  726. They acknowledged

  727. their failings

  728. before God.

  729. They stopped

  730. walking their way

  731. and they started

  732. walking His way.

  733. And Peter uses

  734. two words here

  735. that I think

  736. are so wonderful.

  737. Two words.

  738. First word,

  739. forgiven.

  740. That is what God

  741. is offering,

  742. that is what God

  743. was offering

  744. that morning

  745. and that is what

  746. God is offering

  747. this morning.

  748. Forgiveness.

  749. This isn't cheap

  750. forgiveness.

  751. This is extremely

  752. costly forgiveness

  753. through the blood

  754. of Jesus.

  755. forgiveness.

  756. Now friends,

  757. we need to see

  758. what is driving

  759. the cross,

  760. the great love

  761. of God for us.

  762. Because He could

  763. have quite justifiably

  764. left us on our own.

  765. We rejected Him.

  766. He could have chosen

  767. to have nothing

  768. to do with us.

  769. And yet,

  770. He sent His Son

  771. who went

  772. to the cross

  773. paying the penalty

  774. that you and I

  775. deserve to pay

  776. for our sin.

  777. Jesus gave it

  778. all for us.

  779. second word

  780. that Peter uses,

  781. gift.

  782. This is not about

  783. us earning

  784. God's love.

  785. This is all about

  786. God's grace.

  787. God giving us

  788. something that we

  789. do not deserve.

  790. The gift of the Spirit.

  791. This is what happens

  792. as men and women

  793. come to put their

  794. faith in Jesus.

  795. That God sends

  796. His Spirit,

  797. His real presence

  798. to live in their lives.

  799. so that we no longer

  800. remain detached

  801. and separated

  802. from God.

  803. We become His.

  804. No longer orphans

  805. but adopted

  806. as His children.

  807. Reconciled.

  808. Put right with God.

  809. The God who created us.

  810. Friends,

  811. you were not made

  812. by accident.

  813. You were made

  814. for a relationship

  815. with the God

  816. who created you.

  817. How do you get there?

  818. Through the gospel.

  819. The offer of the gospel

  820. is God Himself.

  821. That is the sermon

  822. that Peter preaches.

  823. And look at what

  824. Luke tells us

  825. at verse 41.

  826. How did this message

  827. go down?

  828. Well, those who accepted

  829. His message

  830. were baptized

  831. and about 3,000

  832. were added to their

  833. number that day.

  834. So the ESV,

  835. if you've got an ESV

  836. with you,

  837. it uses that word

  838. souls.

  839. And I'll admit

  840. I love that word.

  841. Because these are

  842. real people.

  843. These are real

  844. confessions.

  845. These are real baptisms.

  846. And 3,000,

  847. that's a real number.

  848. 3,000 people respond

  849. to what Peter

  850. has been saying

  851. and put their faith

  852. in Jesus.

  853. They trust in what

  854. Jesus did,

  855. that He paid their debt

  856. and His victory

  857. has become their victory.

  858. His perfect obedience,

  859. His righteousness

  860. has become their righteousness

  861. and Jesus has reconciled

  862. them to God

  863. and the resurrection

  864. proves that it's all true.

  865. It's the gospel.

  866. It's the new life

  867. that you and I have

  868. because God

  869. has given us it

  870. in Jesus Christ.

  871. Now here's the thing.

  872. Do you see

  873. this message,

  874. this gospel message,

  875. it births

  876. the church.

  877. It births the church.

  878. This isn't our doing.

  879. This is all

  880. God's doing.

  881. God saves a people

  882. through the gospel.

  883. He redeems men

  884. and women

  885. and creates

  886. a people

  887. for Himself.

  888. This message

  889. is glorious.

  890. It's glorious.

  891. No other message

  892. works.

  893. No other message

  894. could work

  895. and that's why

  896. we as a church,

  897. we stand on this message

  898. because it's the power

  899. of God

  900. unto salvation.

  901. It's the centerpiece

  902. around everything

  903. that goes on here.

  904. The gospel is glorious.

  905. And look what happens

  906. naturally

  907. as a result of that.

  908. Look what the gospel

  909. creates,

  910. verse 42.

  911. This is what Luke

  912. tells us

  913. about this group

  914. of people,

  915. this group of Christians.

  916. They devoted

  917. themselves

  918. to the apostles'

  919. teaching

  920. and to fellowship,

  921. to the breaking

  922. of bread

  923. and to prayer.

  924. Everyone was filled

  925. with awe

  926. at the many wonders

  927. and signs

  928. performed by the apostles.

  929. All the believers

  930. were together

  931. and had everything

  932. in common.

  933. They sold property

  934. and possessions

  935. to give to anyone

  936. who had needs.

  937. Every day

  938. they continued

  939. to meet together

  940. in the temple courts.

  941. They broke bread

  942. in their homes

  943. and ate together

  944. with glad

  945. and sincere hearts

  946. praising God

  947. and enjoying

  948. the favor

  949. of all the people.

  950. So they repent

  951. and they believe

  952. the good news

  953. as individuals.

  954. But do you see

  955. how quickly

  956. Luke begins

  957. to talk of them

  958. as a collective group?

  959. Now if you just look

  960. at those verses there,

  961. how often he uses

  962. the words together.

  963. Together.

  964. That's not an accident.

  965. That is emphasis.

  966. These people

  967. were together.

  968. This new community,

  969. this community

  970. of Jesus'

  971. living people

  972. had been brought

  973. together

  974. through their

  975. common faith

  976. in Jesus.

  977. And that common faith,

  978. the gospel,

  979. shaped their community.

  980. And I think

  981. there are two

  982. really quick marks

  983. of this community

  984. that Luke draws

  985. their attention to.

  986. First mark,

  987. devotion.

  988. Did you notice

  989. that word

  990. as we went through?

  991. Devoted to what?

  992. Well three things.

  993. Devoted to the words.

  994. That is the apostles

  995. teaching,

  996. what they heard

  997. from the apostles

  998. about this man Jesus.

  999. Devoted to fellowship.

  1000. Do you see that?

  1001. That they're looking

  1002. out for one another.

  1003. They're meeting needs

  1004. that arise

  1005. in their community.

  1006. They're eating together.

  1007. They are together

  1008. in their homes.

  1009. They've got everything

  1010. in common.

  1011. And they are devoted

  1012. to,

  1013. can anyone guess it?

  1014. Prayer.

  1015. Devoted to prayer,

  1016. to seeking God,

  1017. to humbling themselves

  1018. and asking for

  1019. his help and power.

  1020. As they seek

  1021. in their community

  1022. to impact it

  1023. with the good news

  1024. of Jesus.

  1025. Here's my question

  1026. for us this morning.

  1027. As a church,

  1028. as individuals,

  1029. are we devoting

  1030. ourselves to these things?

  1031. That's where

  1032. our three things

  1033. come from

  1034. in our transformation

  1035. statement.

1036. I'm pointing at the wall

  1037. because it's over there.

  1038. Okay,

  1039. I've not lost it.

  1040. It's over there.

  1041. Prayer,

  1042. word,

  1043. fellowship.

  1044. These are the things

  1045. that we devote

  1046. ourselves to.

  1047. And we've not just

1048. got that out of thin air.

  1049. This is where

  1050. we've got it from.

  1051. Are we devoting

  1052. ourselves to God's words?

  1053. Are we committed

  1054. to one another

  1055. because we are

  1056. connected in Christ?

  1057. Are we,

  1058. as a family

  1059. of God's people,

  1060. are we devoting

  1061. ourselves to prayer?

  1062. They are a devoted

  1063. community.

  1064. Second mark

  1065. of this community,

  1066. praise.

  1067. Do you see that?

  1068. That they attend

  1069. the temple together.

  1070. Look at the description

  1071. of these people.

  1072. Praising God

  1073. with glad

  1074. and sincere hearts,

  1075. giving thanks to him

  1076. for what he's done

1077. for them in the gospel.

  1078. Do you see that

  1079. there's a distinct

  1080. sense of joy

  1081. as we read

  1082. about them here?

  1083. This joy inspired,

1084. given by the Holy Spirit.

  1085. And notice that phrase

  1086. at verse 47.

  1087. Back in the text,

  1088. what does it say?

  1089. We're almost done.

  1090. Verse 47,

  1091. they enjoyed favor

  1092. with all the people.

1093. So what is going on here?

  1094. The outside world

  1095. is looking at

  1096. what's going on

  1097. in this community,

  1098. this transformed community,

  1099. and they are dumbfounded.

1100. The way that these people act,

1101. the way that they speak,

1102. the way that they live

  1103. their lives,

1104. the way that they witness

  1105. for Jesus,

  1106. clearly caused

  1107. the watching world

  1108. to see something different.

  1109. What a challenge

  1110. is that is

  1111. for us this morning.

  1112. Think about the circles

  1113. that you move in.

  1114. Think about the people

1115. that are in and out

1116. of your lives every day.

  1117. The office,

  1118. the classroom,

  1119. the lecture hall,

  1120. the sports team.

  1121. Do people see

  1122. something different

  1123. in us?

  1124. Are our neighborhoods

  1125. here at Brunsfield,

  1126. are they thankful

  1127. that we are here?

1128. Do we enjoy their favor?

  1129. Why?

  1130. Because they know

  1131. that we are people

  1132. who deeply,

  1133. deeply care.

  1134. See,

  1135. this news about Jesus,

  1136. it has transformed

  1137. and it has created

  1138. a people individually,

  1139. but it has created

  1140. a people corporately.

  1141. This is the church,

  1142. God's people

  1143. who has transformed,

  1144. this community

  1145. of cross-shaped people.

  1146. They are not

  1147. a perfect people.

1148. Do not fall into the trap

  1149. of romanticizing this.

  1150. You just look at

  1151. Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1152. okay,

  1153. a few more on.

  1154. Look at the book

  1155. of 1 Corinthians.

  1156. This early church,

1157. they do not have it sorted.

1158. But there are two marks

  1159. that I think

  1160. we should be seeing

  1161. in our community

1162. as we look at this.

  1163. A people marked

  1164. by devotion

  1165. and a people marked

  1166. by praise.

  1167. The gospel births

  1168. the church.

1169. And just as we close,

  1170. look at the end

  1171. of verse 47.

  1172. We'll just look right.

  1173. And the Lord

  1174. added to their number

  1175. daily

  1176. those who were being

  1177. saved.

  1178. The gospel message

  1179. went forth.

  1180. It continued

  1181. to transform lives.

  1182. God continued

  1183. to give his spirit,

  1184. his power,

  1185. so that this thing

  1186. would go global

1187. and it would hit Jerusalem.

  1188. It would hit Asia.

  1189. It would hit Europe.

  1190. This thing went global.

  1191. And 2,000 years later,

  1192. it continues

  1193. to transform lives today.

  1194. Here's some stats

  1195. as we close

  1196. that I read

  1197. on the Bible Society's

  1198. website this week.

  1199. Here's what's going on

  1200. in our world today.

  1201. This gospel is still

  1202. transforming lives.

  1203. In China,

  1204. thousands are turning

  1205. to Christ

  1206. every single day

  1207. with 500,000

  1208. baptisms

  1209. every year.

1210. Get your head around that.

  1211. 500,000

  1212. baptisms.

  1213. That's bigger

  1214. than our population

  1215. of this city.

  1216. In Nepal,

  1217. the church in Nepal

  1218. has grown from zero

  1219. to over 2 million

  1220. in 65 years.

  1221. In Cuba,

  1222. people are now free

  1223. to attend church services

  1224. where they hear

  1225. the gospel,

  1226. they hear God's words,

  1227. and churches are flourishing

1228. and more and more people

  1229. daily are coming

  1230. to faith.

  1231. In Cambodia,

  1232. 1970s,

  1233. Christianity

  1234. almost wiped out.

  1235. Now,

  1236. the church is expanding

  1237. at an extraordinary rate.

  1238. Here is a quote

  1239. from a young woman

  1240. in Cambodia.

1241. She's receiving her first Bible

  1242. through the Bible Society.

  1243. Here's what she says.

  1244. I've been waiting

1245. for the Bible for a year

  1246. ever since I became

  1247. a Christian.

  1248. We have no money,

  1249. just enough for food

  1250. and sometimes

1251. not even enough for that.

  1252. I am so happy

  1253. about getting a Bible.

  1254. I am so excited.

  1255. Do you see it?

  1256. That the gospel,

  1257. this message,

  1258. 2,000 years ago,

  1259. transformed this community.

  1260. Life's God won them

  1261. through the gospel.

  1262. He saved a people

  1263. and it still transforms

  1264. lives today.

  1265. Friends,

  1266. we are here

  1267. because the gospel works.

  1268. We are here

  1269. because God chose

  1270. to save us

  1271. through this message.

  1272. The gospel

  1273. forms the church.

  1274. Now,

  1275. here's what we're going to do

  1276. just before we pray.

1277. I want you to turn back

  1278. to that neighbor

  1279. that you talked to

  1280. two seconds,

  1281. about 30 minutes ago.

  1282. It wasn't two seconds,

  1283. was it?

1284. Turn back to that neighbor

1285. and in light of what we've seen

  1286. in Acts chapter 1 and 2,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

1287. why did you come to church

  1288. this morning?

1289. And then we'll close in prayer.

  1290. Why don't you talk

  1291. to your neighbor

  1292. and then we'll close.

  1293. Okay, let's pray.

  1294. Father,

  1295. we are so thankful

  1296. for our time together

  1297. this morning

  1298. and we thank you

  1299. for the church.

  1300. We thank you

  1301. for Jesus.

  1302. We thank you

  1303. for the gospel message.

  1304. We thank you

  1305. for the wonderful news

1306. that he is not dead,

  1307. that he is alive

  1308. and reigning in heaven.

  1309. Father,

1310. I pray that you would help us

1311. to know that this week.

  1312. Help us to live

  1313. as people

  1314. whose lives

  1315. are marked

  1316. by love

  1317. for people

  1318. and for him

  1319. in everything

  1320. that we do.

1321. And this is our prayer

  1322. in his name.

  1323. Amen.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.
