  1. Good evening, everyone. I was going to start with rugby as well. I was going to say, if you felt a bit down after rugby this afternoon, I'm going to really depress you over the next half hour or so, as usual, John find the more positive message than I did.

  2. But we're in Amos, we're in the difficult part of Amos in that the message is one of judgment, it's one of God's holiness, and yet I'm sure we've got lots that we can learn from it together this evening.

  3. So let's read together Amos chapter 4.

    Amos 4 chapter mention

  4. Amos chapter 4, we'll read the whole chapter, it's not that long, and it says,

    Amos 4 chapter mention

  5. Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria. You women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, bring us some drinks.

  6. The sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness. The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fish hooks.

  7. You will each go straight out through breaks in the wall, and you will be cast out towards Harman, declares the Lord.

  8. Go to Bethel and sin. Go to Gilgal and sin yet more.

  9. Bring your sacrifices every morning.

  10. Your tithes every three years.

  11. That's probably every three days, actually, for better translation.

  12. Burn leavened bread as a thank offering,

  13. and brag about your freewill offerings.

  14. Boast about them, your Israelites,

  15. for this is what you love to do,

  16. declares the sovereign Lord.

  17. I give you empty stomachs in every city

  18. and lack of bread in every town.

  19. Yet you have not returned to me,

  20. declares the Lord.

  21. I also withheld rain from you

  22. when the harvest was still three months away.

  23. I sent rain on one town,

  24. but withheld it from another.

  25. One field had rain,

  26. the other had none,

  27. and dried up.

  28. People staggered from town to town for water,

  29. but did not get enough to drink.

  30. Yet you have not returned to me,

  31. declares the Lord.

  32. Many times I struck your gardens

  33. and vineyards,

  34. I struck them with blight and milled you.

  35. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees.

  36. Yet you have not returned to me,

  37. declares the Lord.

  38. I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt.

  39. I killed your young men with the sword,

  40. along with your captured horses.

  41. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp.

  42. Yet you have not returned to me,

  43. declares the Lord.

  44. I overthrew some of you

  45. as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

  46. You were like a burning stick

  47. snatched from the fire.

  48. Yet you have not returned to me,

  49. declares the Lord.

  50. Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel.

  51. And because I will do this to you,

  52. prepare to meet your God, O Israel.

  53. He who forms the mountains,

  54. creates the wind,

  55. and reveals his thoughts to man.

  56. He who turns dawn to darkness

  57. and treads the high places of the earth.

  58. The Lord God Almighty

  59. is his name.

  60. I'm sure God will be with us

  61. as we try to make some sense

  62. of this chapter this evening.

  63. If you ever watch soaps on television,

  64. not recommending you do,

  65. but if you ever do watch soaps on television,

  66. there's one sure sign

  67. that things are about to go wrong.

  68. You have two people talking together

  69. and they say,

  70. we've been through really difficult times,

  71. it's been tough for the last little while,

  72. but things are going fine now,

  73. nothing can go wrong in the future.

  74. And that's immediately followed by a murder

  75. or a big fire

  76. or a confession of adultery

  77. or something

  78. that just blows everything up again.

  79. It's when people think things are going okay,

  80. when they become a bit complacent,

  81. that then they start to go badly wrong.

  82. I think if you can get that picture in your mind,

  83. you've essentially got what Amos 4 is all about.

  84. You can imagine the people in Israel saying,

  85. we've had pretty tough times.

  86. We've had famines.

  87. We've had droughts.

  88. We've had locusts come and devour all our crops.

  89. We've had wars.

  90. But that's all behind us now.

  91. We're doing well.

  92. We're wealthy.

  93. We're having a religious revival.

  94. We've never had so many sacrifices on the altars.

  95. God must be really pleased with us.

  96. And God says to them,

  97. and not in a good way,

  98. prepare to meet your God.

  99. It was when they felt things were going well,

  100. when they had become complacent

  101. in their religion,

  102. in their society,

  103. that God comes and says,

  104. you are about to be faced with judgment.

  105. One of the things that's come across

  106. very powerfully to me

  107. as I've been studying Amos

  108. and particularly chapter 4

  109. is the danger that we can become complacent

  110. in that kind of way.

  111. We can look at a chapter like this

  112. and say,

  113. well, this is about people a long time ago.

  114. It's about a godless people.

  115. It's about a people

  116. who were under God's judgment.

  117. We're not under judgment.

  118. We're under grace.

  119. It doesn't really apply to us.

  120. And I hope this evening

  121. we can see that a lot of this

  122. really does apply to us.

  123. Not the ultimate judgment of God.

  124. If we are believing in the Lord Jesus

  125. and we have the grace of God in our lives,

  126. then we can have confidence

  127. that when we meet God

  128. that we will be declared righteous

  129. through the blood of the Lord Jesus.

  130. But some of the practicalities

  131. of the way that the Israelites were acting

  132. and were thinking

  133. can be very relevant indeed to us.

  134. Before we get into the chapter,

  135. let's just orientate ourselves.

  136. A reminder for those

  137. who've been here the last couple of weeks

  138. or if you haven't,

  139. just a brief introduction to Amos.

  140. So Amos is a preacher, a prophet

  141. who came from the southern kingdom of Judah.

  142. He was a shepherd

  143. and God sent him to be prophet

  144. in the northern kingdom of Israel.

  145. And John presented to us very clearly

  146. two weeks ago

  147. that the code for understanding Amos

  148. is 8351.

  149. If you remember 8351,

  150. then you're starting to begin

  151. to understand what it's about.

  152. It starts with eight oracles of judgment.

  153. There are then three sermons of rebuke.

  154. There are then five visions of judgment.

  155. And right at the end,

  156. there's one oracle of salvation.

  157. And in 08351,

  158. we're halfway through three.

  159. So we had the eight oracles of judgment

  160. a couple of weeks ago from John.

  161. We had the first sermon of rebuke

  162. from Mike last week.

  163. We're on the second sermon of rebuke this week.

  164. And then John will be back next week

  165. to give us the third one.

  166. So what we're looking at this evening

  167. is very much a continuation

  168. of what we looked at last Sunday with Mike

  169. and it will be continued next Sunday with John.

  170. And this chapter, I think,

  171. divides into three main sections.

  172. So section one,

  173. it goes from verse one to verse three.

  174. And I've given that the title,

  175. Uncaring Comfort.

  176. You'll see why hopefully in a minute.

  177. The second section goes from verse four to verse five.

  178. And I've called that unworthy worship.

  179. And then the third section goes from verse six

  180. to the end of the chapter.

  181. And I've called that unrecognized rebuke.

  182. And then at the end,

  183. there is God's message of judgment on the people.

  184. So with that in mind,

  185. let's get ahead into the chapter.

  186. The first thing we've called Uncaring Comfort.

  187. And Amos, having talked largely to the men

  188. in chapter three,

  189. or God three,

  190. Amos having talked largely to men in chapter three,

  191. he concentrates to begin with on the woman

  192. at the start of chapter four.

  193. And he describes them as cows of Bashan.

  194. Now, in our culture,

  195. to describe a woman as a cow

  196. is about as bad an insult

  197. as you could ever get.

  198. But this wasn't in itself an insult.

  199. In that culture,

  200. cows were very important.

  201. They were a very important part of society.

  202. And to describe someone or a woman as a cow

  203. was not the insight we'd be today.

  204. To describe them as a cow of Bashan

  205. might even be treated as a bit of a compliment.

  206. The cows of Bashan lived in a part of the country

  207. or exist in a part of the country

  208. where there was lush grass,

  209. where there was lots of feeding for the cows,

  210. where they could go brig and fat.

  211. And the Bashan cows would have been,

  212. I suppose,

  213. a bit like the Aberdeen Angus in our day.

  214. They were the best of the best.

  215. And they were the cows that people would want,

  216. the beef that they ate it,

  217. that the people would want to have.

  218. And so it's not in itself

  219. describing them as cows of Bashan

  220. an insult.

  221. But what God takes from it

  222. is certainly a condemnation

  223. of the woman here.

  224. Because he says,

  225. your comparison to the cows of Bashan

  226. isn't because you're the best of the best,

  227. you're the ones everyone would want.

  228. Rather it's because the cows of Bashan

  229. have this lovely pasture,

  230. they have these great fields

  231. full of grass and flowers and everything else,

  232. and they just tramp around,

  233. they take whatever they want,

  234. and they don't care what they leave behind.

  235. And he says,

  236. you're a bit like that.

  237. You oppress the poor and crush the needy

  238. and say to your husband,

  239. bring us some drinks.

  240. He says to the woman

  241. that they're,

  242. what they are thinking of,

  243. what they want to remember,

  244. their luxury,

  245. their luxury is important to them,

  246. but they want to forget

  247. the poor and the downtrodden.

  248. Now when it says,

  249. they said to her husband,

  250. bring us some drinks,

  251. I don't think the picture is

  252. of sitting beside the pool,

  253. sipping pina coladas and saying,

  254. hey husband,

  255. come and give me another drink.

  256. I think rather it's saying to her husband,

  257. you go out

  258. and you make sure my lifestyle is funded.

  259. So I can live a life of comfort

  260. and of ease,

  261. you go and do that,

  262. and I don't really care

  263. what you do to achieve it.

  264. The women probably weren't

  265. directly oppressing the poor,

  266. but they were encouraging their husbands

  267. to exploit others,

  268. and so God says,

  269. you are oppressing the poor

  270. and crushing the needy.

  271. You who think you're the cream of society,

  272. who think that God has really blessed you,

  273. and you've got everything you need.

  274. Actually,

  275. you're getting it

  276. only through your own greed

  277. and only through exploiting others.

  278. And so God says,

  279. there's a judgment coming on you.

  280. Verse two,

  281. very strong,

  282. the sovereign Lord

  283. has sworn by his holiness.

  284. So we have to say,

  285. well,

  286. God has said you will be judged,

  287. but it actually says,

  288. the sovereign Lord

  289. has sworn by his holiness.

  290. The holy God has looked on them,

  291. and he has said,

  292. I am a God of justice,

  293. I am a God of holiness,

  294. and because of that,

  295. I must do something about it.

  296. And then you get the picture,

  297. and we're in quite difficult territory

  298. in terms of the translations here,

  299. but I think the NIV

  300. has probably got it about right here,

  301. and the picture is of

  302. the woman being led away.

  303. If you imagine a cow being led,

  304. it'll often have something

  305. through its nose,

  306. a hook through its nose,

  307. and is led by that.

  308. And God's saying to the woman,

  309. it will be the same for you.

  310. Now we know from contemporary history,

  311. and from pictures that we see,

  312. that the Assyrians,

  313. who would ultimately conquer the Israelites,

  314. quite often they led their captives away

  315. with a hook through their nose,

  316. or through their mouths.

  317. So perhaps quite literally,

  318. what God is saying here,

  319. would come true.

  320. That these women who thought

  321. they were in great comfort,

  322. that they were secure,

  323. that they had everything they needed.

  324. Ultimately,

  325. what would happen to them

  326. would be led away in disgrace,

  327. into exile,

  328. or into slavery.

  329. And they wouldn't even be led

  330. through the gates of the city.

  331. That's what verse 4,

  332. verse 3 is about.

  333. They would go through breaches

  334. in the wall.

  335. In other words,

  336. a conquering eye would come in,

  337. it would destroy the walls of the city,

  338. and as part of the humiliation

  339. of the residents of the city,

  340. it would drag them out of it

  341. through the holes

  342. that had been made in the wall.

  343. We don't know what cast out towards Harmon,

  344. and mean,

  345. Alec Matier says,

  346. it's one of the great unsolved mysteries of Amos.

  347. Let's not try and solve it this evening,

  348. but I guess it wasn't a good place

  349. for them to be going.

  350. This was a message of God

  351. against the luxury of people,

  352. people who depended on luxury,

  353. and saying,

  354. because you've got your luxury

  355. through exploiting others,

  356. then you are going to be judged for it.

  357. What's the relevance of that for us today?

  358. Well, we live in a society

  359. that in many ways

  360. has been built on exploitation,

  361. on people in positions of power

  362. and authority

  363. and exploiting others.

  364. Now, whether it's in our own country,

  365. or whether it's the way our country

  366. in some ways has treated other countries,

  367. certainly in the past,

  368. and taking advantage of them

  369. in a way which is not fair.

  370. So whether it's the sweatshops in China,

  371. whether it's the banana planters in Africa,

  372. or whatever it is,

  373. in our society,

  374. we have been quite happy

  375. to see others exploited.

  376. But actually, most of us,

  377. I say we're happy to see them exploited,

  378. we're actually quite happy

  379. not to see them exploited.

  380. We'd like to turn a blind eye

  381. to the fact that there is injustice

  382. in our world,

  383. and it makes us more comfortable,

  384. then almost so be it.

  385. Now, we wouldn't express it

  386. in that kind of way,

  387. but that actually is probably

  388. how our society has acted.

  389. And I've seen things,

  390. certainly in the past,

  391. perhaps changing slightly now.

  392. And so there is a message here for us.

  393. God has prospered us

  394. as a society,

  395. as a country.

  396. But has he prospered us,

  397. has our prosperity,

  398. to some extent,

  399. come through taking advantage

  400. through exploiting others?

  401. Do we have a real concern

  402. as Christians

  403. for those who are being downtrodden

  404. in our world?

  405. I struck this morning

  406. when John was praying

  407. for other churches,

  408. when he mentioned P's and G's,

  409. he talked about their passion

  410. for social justice.

  411. That's a passion

  412. that all of us should have.

  413. And I'm not saying

  414. we go out with placards

  415. on the streets

  416. and demonstrate

  417. and that kind of things,

  418. but we shouldn't be willing

  419. to see injustice

  420. or to ignore injustice

  421. and to let it happen.

  422. Now, hopefully,

  423. none of us would directly exploit.

  424. Others Christians do sometimes.

  425. Hopefully,

  426. none of us would do that.

  427. But perhaps,

  428. in some of the actions we take,

  429. even the things we go out and buy,

  430. in the way we treat others,

  431. in the way we look at situations

  432. like what's happening,

  433. in the Middle East at the moment,

  434. can we look at them

  435. with the eye that says,

  436. how would God view this?

  437. And is our society,

  438. in some ways,

  439. going against God's way

  440. and exploiting others?

  441. Christians and I,

  442. early in the year,

  443. were in Miami Beach.

  444. And when we were in Miami Beach,

  445. there was only really one church

  446. that was very easy to go to,

  447. which was the community church there.

  448. Now, it wasn't,

  449. by any stretch of the imagination,

  450. evangelical.

  451. We went to the service on Sunday

  452. and the minister sent quite a long time

  453. trying to defend himself

  454. against charges

  455. that he didn't teach the gospel.

  456. And as far as I gathered,

  457. the gospel,

  458. where he was concerned,

  459. was God accepts everybody

  460. and we should too.

  461. So it wasn't the kind of sermon

  462. we'd expect here.

  463. It might be quite time

  464. to send him Graham's sermon

  465. from this morning,

  466. to teach what the gospel

  467. really is about.

  468. But the slogan of the Miami

  469. community,

  470. Miami Beach Community Church

  471. was,

  472. we do justice.

  473. And they do.

  474. We went to a soup kitchen

  475. while they were there,

  476. inviting the many poor

  477. and homeless in Miami Beach

  478. to come in

  479. and to see something

  480. of real love.

  481. If you look on their website,

  482. there are lots and lots

  483. of things that they do

  484. that make it clear

  485. that they see justice

  486. as being a key element

  487. of Christian faith.

  488. Now, very easy for us

  489. to think,

  490. well, we do gospel.

  491. And we do.

  492. And quite rightly so.

  493. At first,

  494. it doesn't preach the gospel.

  495. It is dreadfully failing

  496. the world round about us.

  497. But as we do gospel,

  498. it is really important also

  499. that we do justice.

  500. If our lives really

  501. are being transformed

  502. by the grace of the Lord Jesus,

  503. which is our vision

  504. as a church,

  505. part of that transformation

  506. is being able to look

  507. with the eyes of God

  508. and to see what's wrong

  509. in the world round about us

  510. and to do whatever we can

  511. to make things better

  512. for the poor

  513. and for the downtrodden.

  514. Remember the words of God

  515. in Hosea,

  516. I desire mercy,

  517. not sacrifice.

  518. And it's great for us

  519. to come and to enjoy

  520. as church

  521. and being together,

  522. studying God's word,

  523. preaching the gospel,

  524. inviting others

  525. to come to know

  526. the Lord Jesus.

  527. But alongside that,

  528. we have to have

  529. the concern

  530. that God has

  531. for those

  532. who are not in such

  533. a privileged position

  534. as us.

  535. The Lord Jesus,

  536. remember,

  537. came to preach

  538. good news

  539. to the poor.

  540. And while the proclamation

  541. of the gospel

  542. is our key thing

  543. as a church,

  544. we need also

  545. to have that passion

  546. for social justice

  547. and desire

  548. to see real justice

  549. in our world.

  550. And not to say,

  551. I'm all right,

  552. I'm comfortable,

  553. so I'm not going to bother

  554. about anything else

  555. or where things come from

  556. or how I came

  557. to be comfortable.

  558. We need to have

  559. that passion

  560. for justice

  561. that God has

  562. that Amos displays here.

  563. So no uncaring comfort

  564. for us.

  565. Let's move on, though.

  566. Verses 4 and 5,

  567. Amos moves on

  568. to the people's religion.

  569. And so I've called this

  570. unworthy worship.

  571. Now what you need

  572. to understand

  573. with these verses

  574. is that God

  575. is being very,

  576. very sarcastic

  577. in what he says.

  578. that he is making

  579. the point

  580. by mimicking

  581. what would be

  582. a call to worship.

  583. So the call

  584. to go to Bethel

  585. or to Gilgal.

  586. That would have been

  587. a call that would have

  588. been legitimately used

  589. for people to come

  590. and to worship God

  591. at his altars.

  592. But God is saying,

  593. you only do that

  594. because you are there

  595. to sin.

  596. Go to Bethel

  597. and sin,

  598. go to Gilgal

  599. and sin yet more.

  600. Now this would have come

  601. as a real shock

  602. to the people.

  603. Because the people

  604. of Amos' day

  605. thought that they were

  606. okay from a religious

  607. viewpoint.

  608. Bethel and Gilgal

  609. had been shrines

  610. to false gods

  611. since the day

  612. of Jeroboam.

  613. But there's no suggestion

  614. here that they're going

  615. to sacrifice

  616. to false gods.

  617. The suggestion

  618. appears to be

  619. they're going

  620. to sacrifice

  621. to the true God,

  622. the God of Israel.

  623. And as the people go,

  624. they say,

  625. we are really going

  626. to show our devotion

  627. to God.

  628. So the normal thing

  629. would have been

  630. to bring a sacrifice

  631. once a year

  632. to God.

  633. People say,

  634. we don't just do it

  635. once a year,

  636. we do it every single day.

  637. Now,

  638. probably some exaggeration

  639. here for effect,

  640. but they're saying

  641. not once a year,

  642. every morning.

  643. Normal thing,

  644. again,

  645. would have been

  646. to bring your tithes

  647. to God

  648. every third year.

  649. And I think

  650. with the right translation

  651. which the ESV

  652. and others use,

  653. the people are saying,

  654. actually,

  655. we bring our tithes

  656. to God

  657. every three days,

  658. not every three years.

  659. The significance

  660. of the leavened bread

  661. is slightly less clear cut.

  662. It might be

  663. that the leavened bread

  664. was a kind of voluntary extra

  665. in the thank offering.

  666. So you brought

  667. your animal sacrifice,

  668. you brought

  669. your leavened bread,

  670. and if you're really,

  671. really spiritual,

  672. you brought your

  673. unleavened bread as well.

  674. Or perhaps it was the fact

  675. that it was burnt,

  676. that the offerings normally

  677. would be given

  678. and would be taken

  679. by the priest.

  680. This was totally devoted

  681. to God.

  682. Or perhaps in this context,

  683. it was simply the fact

  684. that unleavened bread

  685. would be a bit more obvious

  686. than leavened bread

  687. because the yeast

  688. had made it rise.

  689. And so people could

  690. very clearly see,

  691. oh yes,

  692. you've brought

  693. a really good sacrifice

  694. to God

  695. and you might then

  696. get credit for it.

  697. But the point in what

  698. Amos is saying here

  699. is these people

  700. weren't coming to God

  701. with real worship.

  702. They were coming to God

  703. from their lives

  704. of injustice,

  705. of oppression,

  706. of others,

  707. and they were doing

  708. what they saw

  709. as their religious duty

  710. and they thought,

  711. well,

  712. that will be okay for me.

  713. And I'll just do

  714. a bit of extra

  715. in my religious duty

  716. to particularly please God

  717. and everything

  718. will be all right.

  719. And when they looked

  720. at their worship,

  721. the first thing

  722. they wanted

  723. was that it would

  724. look good.

  725. So that's in

  726. verse 5.

  727. Brag about your

  728. freewill offerings,

  729. boast about them,

  730. you Israelites,

  731. for this is what

  732. you love to do.

  733. They were coming

  734. to God,

  735. coming ostensibly

  736. to worship God.

  737. Actually,

  738. what they were doing

  739. was they were looking

  740. around and saying,

  741. everyone should be

  742. really impressed

  743. with me

  744. and with how often

  745. I worship

  746. and with all the things

  747. that I bring

  748. to the altar.

  749. They really weren't

  750. coming to worship

  751. God at all,

  752. they were coming

  753. to look good

  754. to others.

  755. They also think,

  756. I think,

  757. coming to feel good.

  758. If you think

  759. you've come

  760. and you've done

  761. your religious duty

  762. and you say,

  763. God has prospered me

  764. and I'm giving back

  765. to God,

  766. I'm making these

  767. sacrifices,

  768. you're thinking,

  769. well,

  770. I'm all right.

  771. God's going to really

  772. think I'm a great

  773. believer in him

  774. and follower of him.

  775. I feel good

  776. about my worship

  777. of God.

  778. But perhaps what

  779. Amos is saying,

  780. what God is saying

  781. through Amos,

  782. it's no good

  783. looking good,

  784. it's no good

  785. feeling good

  786. if you're not

  787. actually doing

  788. good.

  789. if your worship

  790. isn't genuine,

  791. if your lives

  792. deny what you

  793. would attempt

  794. to portray

  795. to others,

  796. then your worship

  797. is absolutely

  798. worthless.

  799. Looking good,

  800. feeling good,

  801. may make you

  802. think you're good,

  803. but actually

  804. it's the way you act,

  805. it's the difference

  806. that God in your life

  807. makes in your

  808. everyday living

  809. that really

  810. matters.

  811. remember the

  812. parable of the

  813. Lord Jesus,

  814. of the traditionally

  815. called the Pharisee

  816. and the publican,

  817. and this guy

  818. goes into the

  819. temple and says,

  820. really thankful

  821. God that I'm not

  822. like other people,

  823. I do my fasting,

  824. I do my tithing,

  825. and I do my

  826. religious duty,

  827. unlike this guy

  828. in the corner,

  829. and it's the one

  830. in the corner

  831. who is so repentant

  832. and so broken

  833. that God hears

  834. and God forgives.

  835. Well, the people

  836. were like the

  837. Pharisee.

  838. How should we

  839. come to God?

  840. Psalm 24,

  841. Who shall ascend

  842. the hill of the

  843. Lord?

  844. Who shall stand

  845. in his holy place?

  846. He who has

  847. clean hands

  848. and a pure

  849. heart.

  850. What does that

  851. mean for us?

  852. I think it means

  853. when we come

  854. on a Sunday

  855. or at other times,

  856. when we come

  857. to do our

  858. obvious acts

  859. of worship

  860. for God,

  861. that we don't

  862. come with the

  863. attitude,

  864. either I'm here

  865. so that I can

  866. look good to

  867. others,

  868. or I'm here

  869. so that I can

  870. feel good

  871. before God.

  872. We must come

  873. with the attitude

  874. of the publican,

  875. the attitude of

  876. the one who can

  877. say,

  878. I'm not worthy

  879. to be in God's

  880. presence,

  881. and yet by the

  882. grace of God,

  883. by the marvellous

  884. things that he's

  885. done in my life,

  886. I am able

  887. to be here.

  888. And we must

  889. also come looking

  890. back at our

  891. lives,

  892. looking back

  893. and saying,

  894. in the past

  895. week,

  896. has my life,

  897. has my testimony

  898. as a Christian

  899. been consistent

  900. with how I am

  901. portraying myself

  902. today?

  903. Or am I

  904. actually as

  905. hypocritical as

  906. these Israelites

  907. here,

  908. that I come

  909. to present

  910. apparently to

  911. God and to

  912. engage fully

  913. in worship,

  914. and yet the

  915. real worship,

  916. the worship

  917. that is in

  918. my transformed

  919. life before

  920. God,

  921. that is just

  922. not there.

  923. The fact that

  924. I come to

  925. three services

  926. on a Sunday,

  927. however many I

  928. do,

  929. the fact that

  930. I'm enthusiastic

  931. in my worship,

  932. the fact perhaps

  933. I lead worship

  934. or lead services

  935. or preach,

  936. or whatever I

  937. do,

  938. these things

  939. are all

  940. worthless,

  941. unless I come

  942. before God

  943. in sincerity

  944. and with a

  945. desire that

  946. he is glorified

  947. and not

  948. that I

  949. am glorified.

  950. It is so

  951. important that

  952. when we come

  953. before God,

  954. we come to

  955. give our

  956. thanks,

  957. our praise,

  958. our worship

  959. to him,

  960. and that we

  961. come with our

  962. sins confessed,

  963. and that we

  964. come with lives

  965. where we are

  966. trying to follow

  967. him and to

  968. live for him

  969. and to be

  970. obedient servants

  971. of the Lord

  972. Jesus.

  973. So easy to be

  974. guilty of

  975. unworthy

  976. worship.

  977. Finally,

  978. unrecognised

  979. rebuke.

  980. Now I'm

  981. going to have

  982. to turn around

  983. because I

  984. can't read

  985. that on

  986. the back

  987. screen.

  988. The words

  989. of C.S.

  990. Lewis,

  991. very well

  992. known,

  993. God

  994. whispers to

  995. us in

  996. our

  997. pleasures,

  998. speaks to

  999. us in

  1000. our

  1001. conscience,

  1002. but shouts

  1003. in our

  1004. pains.

  1005. It is

  1006. his megaphone

  1007. to rouse

  1008. a deaf

  1009. world.

  1010. In other

  1011. words,

  1012. very often

  1013. the way in

  1014. which God

  1015. tries to

  1016. gain our

  1017. attention

  1018. and to

  1019. point out

  1020. what's wrong

  1021. in our

  1022. life can

  1023. be through

  1024. the bad

  1025. things that

  1026. happen to

  1027. us.

  1028. And that's

  1029. what the

  1030. rest of

  1031. this chapter

  1032. is all

  1033. about.

  1034. Five times

  1035. God describes

  1036. bad things

  1037. that happened

  1038. to the nation

  1039. of Israel.

  1040. And five

  1041. times he

  1042. says,

  1043. despite that

  1044. you have

  1045. not returned

  1046. to me.

  1047. The megaphone

  1048. was on at

  1049. full blast.

  1050. It should

  1051. have been

  1052. obvious to

  1053. the people

  1054. that God

  1055. was trying

  1056. to say

  1057. something to

  1058. them.

  1059. And yet

  1060. they totally

  1061. ignored it.

  1062. They didn't

  1063. realise that

  1064. God was

  1065. speaking to

  1066. them through

  1067. the pains

  1068. they were

  1069. suffering.

  1070. So I have

  1071. to look

  1072. briefly at

  1073. these five

  1074. things.

  1075. Verse six,

  1076. I've called it

  1077. clean teeth and

  1078. empty stomachs.

  1079. NIV talks

  1080. about empty

  1081. stomachs.

  1082. The literal

  1083. translation with

  1084. some other

  1085. versions use

  1086. is clean

  1087. teeth.

  1088. Now the

  1089. idea is if

  1090. you've got

  1091. clean teeth

  1092. it suggests

  1093. you've not

  1094. been eating

  1095. so it has

  1096. the same

  1097. idea as

  1098. empty

  1099. stomachs but

  1100. it's just

  1101. a slightly

  1102. different

  1103. idiom.

  1104. So in

  1105. other words

  1106. God says

  1107. in the

  1108. past I've

  1109. sent famine

  1110. to you.

  1111. You've had

  1112. times when

  1113. you couldn't

  1114. eat when

  1115. there wasn't

  1116. enough when

  1117. I was trying

  1118. to speak

  1119. to you

  1120. through that

  1121. famine and

  1122. yet you

  1123. ignored me.

  1124. When things

  1125. got better,

  1126. when you got

  1127. the food,

  1128. you forgot

  1129. about it

  1130. and my

  1131. message to

  1132. you wasn't

  1133. received.

  1134. He then

  1135. said you

  1136. had parched

  1137. fields and

  1138. dry mouths.

  1139. So with a

  1140. picture of

  1141. God withholding

  1142. rain and

  1143. the quite

  1144. strong imagery

  1145. of there'd

  1146. be rain in

  1147. one place and

  1148. everyone would

  1149. rush to that

  1150. place, find the

  1151. rain had gone

  1152. there and

  1153. rush somewhere

  1154. else and

  1155. it'd be going

  1156. all over the

  1157. place trying

  1158. to get water,

  1159. trying to get

  1160. something to

  1161. drink and

  1162. hoping that

  1163. somewhere the

  1164. crops would

  1165. have come at

  1166. the time of

  1167. harvest.

  1168. God says

  1169. to them,

  1170. you had

  1171. this as a

  1172. second warning.

  1173. You had

  1174. these droughts

  1175. that should have

  1176. spoken to you

  1177. and help you

  1178. to recognise

  1179. that I was

  1180. judging you

  1181. and you

  1182. ignored them,

  1183. you still

  1184. didn't return

  1185. to me.

  1186. Third thing

  1187. that God

  1188. sent was

  1189. blighted

  1190. plants and

  1191. devoured

  1192. fruits.

  1193. Verse 9,

  1194. I struck

  1195. your gardens

  1196. and vineyards

  1197. destroying

  1198. them with

  1199. blight and

  1200. mildew,

  1201. locusts

  1202. devoured

  1203. your fig

  1204. and olive

  1205. trees,

  1206. yet you

  1207. have not

  1208. returned to

  1209. me,

  1210. declares

  1211. the Lord.

  1212. So plants

  1213. were diseased,

  1214. became

  1215. unfruitful,

  1216. inedible because

  1217. of that,

  1218. or when there

  1219. was fruit,

  1220. the locusts

  1221. came along

  1222. and they

  1223. took it all

  1224. so the people

  1225. had nothing,

  1226. again a time

  1227. of a shortage

  1228. of what the

  1229. people needed,

  1230. a time when

  1231. they should have

  1232. looked and

  1233. said,

  1234. what is

  1235. God saying

  1236. to us?

  1237. But they

  1238. didn't,

  1239. they ignored

  1240. him.

  1241. Number 4,

  1242. called diseased

  1243. bodies and

  1244. rocked

  1245. corpses.

  1246. I sent

  1247. plagues

  1248. among you

  1249. as I did

  1250. to Egypt,

  1251. I killed

  1252. your young

  1253. men with

  1254. the sword

  1255. along with

  1256. your captured

  1257. horses,

  1258. I filled

  1259. your nostrils

  1260. with the stench

  1261. of your

  1262. camps,

  1263. yet you

  1264. have not

  1265. returned to

  1266. me,

  1267. declares

  1268. the Lord.

  1269. Comparison

  1270. of Israel

  1271. and Egypt.

  1272. Egypt for

  1273. the Israelites

  1274. was the

  1275. place where

  1276. there had

  1277. been slavery,

  1278. it had

  1279. been a

  1280. place of

  1281. wickedness

  1282. where God

  1283. had judged

  1284. the people

  1285. of Egypt

  1286. to force

  1287. the Pharaoh

  1288. to let

  1289. the Israelites

  1290. go.

  1291. And Amos

  1292. says,

  1293. God says

  1294. to Amos,

  1295. I sent

  1296. the kind

  1297. of things

  1298. on you

  1299. that I

  1300. sent on

  1301. Egypt

  1302. and even

  1303. then you

  1304. didn't

  1305. recognize it

  1306. and didn't

  1307. return to

  1308. me.

  1309. And

  1310. then the

  1311. final one

  1312. I've

  1313. called

  1314. destroyed

  1315. cities

  1316. and

  1317. scarred

  1318. survivors,

  1319. not quite

  1320. so clear

  1321. exactly

  1322. what's

  1323. in mind

  1324. here,

  1325. but it

  1326. appears to

  1327. be again

  1328. that there

  1329. was some

  1330. kind of

  1331. distraction.

  1332. I

  1333. overthrew

  1334. some of

  1335. you as

  1336. I

  1337. overthrew

  1338. Sodom and

  1339. Gomorrah.

  1340. You

  1341. were like

  1342. a burning

  1343. stick

  1344. snatched

  1345. from the

  1346. fire,

  1347. yet you

  1348. have not

  1349. returned

  1350. to me,

  1351. declares

  1352. the Lord.

  1353. If

  1354. Egypt

  1355. was bad,

  1356. Sodom and

  1357. Gomorrah

  1358. was much

  1359. worse.

  1360. Sodom and

  1361. Gomorrah

  1362. would speak

  1363. of the

  1364. utter

  1365. depravity

  1366. of man,

  1367. the cities

  1368. which were

  1369. so wicked

  1370. that God

  1371. had to

  1372. destroy them

  1373. completely.

  1374. And God

  1375. says to

  1376. Amos,

  1377. you were

  1378. like that.

  1379. I came

  1380. and visited

  1381. you,

  1382. and we don't

  1383. know what

  1384. it was,

  1385. it might

  1386. be the

  1387. earth

  1388. grace,

  1389. it might

  1390. be something

  1391. like that,

  1392. but something

  1393. happened that

  1394. God could

  1395. say it was

  1396. a bit like

  1397. my judgment

  1398. of Sodom and

  1399. Gomorrah,

  1400. but in my

  1401. mercy I

  1402. spared you

  1403. like a

  1404. burning

  1405. stick

  1406. snatched

  1407. from the

  1408. fire,

  1409. so you

  1410. just about

  1411. got away,

  1412. and yet

  1413. still you

  1414. didn't

  1415. return

  1416. to me.

  1417. And so

  1418. says God,

  1419. now is

  1420. the time

  1421. to prepare

  1422. to meet

  1423. your

  1424. God.

  1425. You've

  1426. had all

  1427. the warnings,

  1428. you've

  1429. had all

  1430. the opportunities

  1431. to turn

  1432. back to

  1433. me.

  1434. It's too

  1435. late now,

  1436. and this

  1437. isn't a

  1438. gospel message

  1439. that Amos

  1440. is preaching

  1441. or God

  1442. is preaching

  1443. through Amos,

  1444. this is a

  1445. message that

  1446. says you

  1447. are going

  1448. to be

  1449. judged

  1450. because you

  1451. have ignored

  1452. me,

  1453. prepare for

  1454. that time

  1455. of judgment.

  1456. Look in a

  1457. minute at

  1458. verse 13,

  1459. but let's

  1460. just apply

  1461. this a

  1462. little bit

  1463. just now.

  1464. God

  1465. speaks to

  1466. us as

  1467. C.S.

  1468. Lewis

  1469. says,

  1470. he shouts

  1471. at us

  1472. through our

  1473. pain.

  1474. And I

  1475. wonder how

  1476. often when

  1477. things happen

  1478. to us,

  1479. when things

  1480. go wrong

  1481. and are not

  1482. the way that

  1483. we would

  1484. want them

  1485. to be,

  1486. how often

  1487. do we

  1488. look and

  1489. say,

  1490. well,

  1491. what is

  1492. God saying

  1493. to us

  1494. through it?

  1495. We might

  1496. pray that

  1497. God will

  1498. take us

  1499. out of

  1500. it.

  1501. We might

  1502. pray that

  1503. God will

  1504. send healing

  1505. or restoration

  1506. or whatever

  1507. it is.

  1508. We will

  1509. pray to

  1510. God for

  1511. his help

  1512. in the

  1513. situation.

  1514. How often

  1515. do we

  1516. examine

  1517. ourselves

  1518. and say,

  1519. what is

  1520. it that

  1521. God is

  1522. saying to

  1523. me

  1524. through

  1525. this?

  1526. Sometimes

  1527. God sends

  1528. bad things

  1529. or allows

  1530. bad things

  1531. to happen

  1532. so that

  1533. he will

  1534. be glorified.

  1535. Not always

  1536. remember

  1537. John 9

  1538. and the

  1539. blind man

  1540. disciples say,

  1541. well,

  1542. who's in

  1543. this man

  1544. or his

  1545. mother

  1546. or his

  1547. parents?

  1548. And the

  1549. Lord says

  1550. it's so

  1551. that God

  1552. will be

  1553. glorified

  1554. that he's

  1555. in this

  1556. condition.

  1557. So sometimes

  1558. it is

  1559. God

  1560. sending

  1561. things for

  1562. his glory

  1563. and through

  1564. the way

  1565. that we

  1566. are able

  1567. to trust

  1568. in God

  1569. and be

  1570. a witness

  1571. to his

  1572. grace

  1573. in our

  1574. lives.

  1575. That can

  1576. be a

  1577. powerful

  1578. thing

  1579. that he

  1580. uses.

  1581. I think

  1582. we also

  1583. need to

  1584. recognize

  1585. that those

  1586. whom God

  1587. loves,

  1588. he disciplines

  1589. and God

  1590. does send

  1591. things,

  1592. sometimes

  1593. allow things

  1594. to happen

  1595. to us

  1596. because there

  1597. is something

  1598. in our

  1599. lives that

  1600. needs to

  1601. be put

  1602. right and

  1603. we need

  1604. to be

  1605. willing to

  1606. listen to

  1607. God's

  1608. voice in

  1609. these

  1610. circumstances.

  1611. Five times

  1612. he's spoken

  1613. to the

  1614. Israelites,

  1615. five times

  1616. he's spoken

  1617. very powerfully

  1618. to things

  1619. that happened

  1620. to them,

  1621. five times

  1622. they ignored

  1623. him.

  1624. We need

  1625. to make

  1626. sure that

  1627. we don't

  1628. ignore

  1629. God when

  1630. he comes

  1631. with warnings

  1632. to us.

  1633. But then

  1634. there is

  1635. the message

  1636. of judgment.

  1637. By the

  1638. grace of

  1639. the Lord

  1640. Jesus

  1641. through his

  1642. death

  1643. for us,

  1644. we don't

  1645. need to

  1646. be concerned

  1647. about the

  1648. fact that

  1649. when the

  1650. Lord returns

  1651. or when we

  1652. go to be

  1653. with him,

  1654. if our

  1655. trust is

  1656. in him,

  1657. then we

  1658. are secure,

  1659. not because

  1660. of any

  1661. good in

  1662. us,

  1663. but by

  1664. the blood

  1665. of the

  1666. Lord Jesus

  1667. and by

  1668. his wonderful

  1669. grace to

  1670. us.

  1671. And yet

  1672. there is a

  1673. world round

  1674. about that

  1675. doesn't know

  1676. him.

  1677. There is a

  1678. world round

  1679. about of

  1680. people who

  1681. are going

  1682. towards an

  1683. eternal

  1684. destiny which

  1685. is separate

  1686. from God

  1687. where they

  1688. will face

  1689. the full

  1690. wrath of

  1691. God.

  1692. And we

  1693. can still

  1694. go out to

  1695. them and

  1696. we can

  1697. say,

  1698. perhaps not

  1699. in these

  1700. words,

  1701. perhaps in

  1702. these

  1703. words,

  1704. we can

  1705. say,

  1706. prepare to

  1707. meet your

  1708. God,

  1709. but we

  1710. can go

  1711. with a

  1712. message that

  1713. is not

  1714. hopeless,

  1715. this is not

  1716. a saying

  1717. that judgment

  1718. for you is

  1719. inevitable.

  1720. We can go

  1721. with a message

  1722. of hope that

  1723. says if you

  1724. do prepare,

  1725. if you do

  1726. trust in the

  1727. Lord Jesus,

  1728. then you

  1729. can have

  1730. forgiveness,

  1731. you can be

  1732. ready to

  1733. meet your

  1734. God.

  1735. What a

  1736. motivation it

  1737. should be to

  1738. us.

  1739. There are

  1740. people around

  1741. about who

  1742. are going not

  1743. knowing anything

  1744. about the

  1745. Lord Jesus,

  1746. not knowing

  1747. the message

  1748. of the

  1749. gospel,

  1750. heading towards

  1751. judgment.

  1752. And we

  1753. have the

  1754. opportunity to

  1755. give them

  1756. that warning

  1757. and to

  1758. give them

  1759. the opportunity

  1760. to trust

  1761. in the

  1762. Lord Jesus

  1763. and to

  1764. know his

  1765. forgiveness.

  1766. Let it be

  1767. a motivation

  1768. to us as

  1769. well as

  1770. a self

  1771. examination

  1772. as we

  1773. look at

  1774. these

  1775. verses.

  1776. Let me

  1777. look briefly

  1778. at verse

  1779. 13.

  1780. This is

  1781. verse 13

  1782. where the

  1783. Lord having

  1784. said,

  1785. prepare to

  1786. meet your

  1787. God,

  1788. he presents

  1789. his

  1790. credentials.

  1791. Why should

  1792. they be

  1793. concerned about

  1794. falling into

  1795. the hands

  1796. of the

  1797. living God?

  1798. Because he

  1799. is all

  1800. powerful.

  1801. He is the

  1802. one who

  1803. created,

  1804. he is the

  1805. one who

  1806. sustained,

  1807. he formed

  1808. the mountains

  1809. so the

  1810. physical

  1811. things around

  1812. about us

  1813. are his.

  1814. He created

  1815. the wind

  1816. so it's not

  1817. just the

  1818. visible,

  1819. it's the

  1820. invisible as

  1821. well.

  1822. And he

  1823. reveals his

  1824. thoughts to

  1825. mankind.

  1826. He is able

  1827. to provide

  1828. information for

  1829. us that

  1830. is vital

  1831. to life.

  1832. We live,

  1833. they tell

  1834. us,

  1835. in the

  1836. information

  1837. superhighway,

  1838. more information

  1839. available now

  1840. at the

  1841. top of a

  1842. button than

  1843. the whole

  1844. of human

  1845. history.

  1846. And yet

  1847. anything that

  1848. has been

  1849. truly revealed

  1850. to us has

  1851. been revealed

  1852. by God.

  1853. Now,

  1854. that revelation,

  1855. of course,

  1856. is in his

  1857. word.

  1858. And he is the

  1859. one who turns

  1860. on to

  1861. darkness,

  1862. night and

  1863. day,

  1864. treads the

  1865. height of

  1866. the earth,

  1867. the Lord

  1868. God Almighty

  1869. is his

  1870. name.

  1871. What a

  1872. marvellous

  1873. God it

  1874. is we

  1875. know and

  1876. we worship.

  1877. The one who

  1878. is the

  1879. creator,

  1880. the sustainer

  1881. of life,

  1882. without whom

  1883. the universe

  1884. could not

  1885. exist.

  1886. He is our

  1887. God and

  1888. he is

  1889. all-powerful.

  1890. But as he

  1891. is all-powerful,

  1892. so he is

  1893. all-just as

  1894. well.

  1895. He is the

  1896. holy God and

  1897. that is why

  1898. we have

  1899. chapters like

  1900. Amos chapter

  1901. four,

  1902. pointing out

  1903. that there

  1904. are consequences

  1905. for those

  1906. who don't

  1907. believe in

  1908. him,

  1909. who don't

  1910. follow in

  1911. his ways.

  1912. Our time's

  1913. pretty well

  1914. gone,

  1915. so let me

  1916. just finish

  1917. with three

  1918. conclusions just

  1919. to summarise

  1920. the key

  1921. points that

  1922. we've looked

  1923. at.

  1924. The first

  1925. thing is

  1926. let's examine

  1927. ourselves and

  1928. see have

  1929. we got an

  1930. attitude of

  1931. uncaring

  1932. comfort.

  1933. Thou do

  1934. my selfish

  1935. desires blunt

  1936. my desire

  1937. for justice

  1938. in this

  1939. world.

  1940. Have I

  1941. got that

  1942. consumerist

  1943. attitude that

  1944. says I

  1945. want everything

  1946. I can get

  1947. I'm not

  1948. going to

  1949. ask too

  1950. many questions

  1951. about how

  1952. it came

  1953. to be.

  1954. Second

  1955. thing is

  1956. about unworthy

  1957. worship.

  1958. When I

  1959. come to

  1960. God in

  1961. my acts

  1962. of worship

  1963. whether it's

  1964. in church

  1965. or in

  1966. other contexts

  1967. in private

  1968. as well,

  1969. is my

  1970. worship God

  1971. honouring?

  1972. Or is

  1973. it sinful?

  1974. It's going

  1975. to be one

  1976. or the

  1977. other.

  1978. There's

  1979. going to be

  1980. no middle

  1981. course on

  1982. this.

  1983. Either

  1984. when I

  1985. come to

  1986. God,

  1987. it's

  1988. honouring

  1989. to God

  1990. because I

  1991. come with

  1992. the right

  1993. motives and

  1994. with the

  1995. right

  1996. lifestyle,

  1997. or it's

  1998. dishonouring

  1999. to God,

  2000. it's sinful

  2001. because I've

  2002. come with

  2003. the wrong

  2004. motives or

  2005. with a

  2006. life that

  2007. is not

  2008. consistent

  2009. with what

  2010. I would

  2011. present in

  2012. my

  2013. worship.

  2014. Let our

  2015. worship be

  2016. worthy

  2017. before God.

  2018. And then

  2019. there's the

  2020. unrecognised

  2021. rebuke.

  2022. Do I

  2023. hear God's

  2024. voice?

  2025. Am I

  2026. willing to

  2027. listen to

  2028. what God

  2029. has to

  2030. say to

  2031. me?

  2032. And am I

  2033. willing to

  2034. put it into

  2035. practice and

  2036. to change my

  2037. life if

  2038. necessary?

  2039. And have I

  2040. got that

  2041. desire to

  2042. help others

  2043. to hear it

  2044. too?

  2045. To bring to

  2046. them the

  2047. glorious news

  2048. of the

  2049. gospel of

  2050. the Lord

  2051. Jesus,

  2052. that they

  2053. may truly

  2054. be prepared

  2055. to meet

  2056. their God

  2057. and prepare

  2058. to meet

  2059. them because

  2060. they know

  2061. the saviour,

  2062. because they

  2063. know their

  2064. sins have

  2065. been forgiven.

  2066. So a

  2067. hard passage

  2068. in many ways

  2069. in terms of

  2070. the messages

  2071. that God

  2072. would bring

  2073. to us.

  2074. But let's

  2075. take them,

  2076. let's apply

  2077. them in

  2078. our hearts

  2079. and let's

  2080. go out and

  2081. live lives

  2082. that are

  2083. worthy of

  2084. the Lord

  2085. Jesus who

  2086. died for

  2087. us and

  2088. who called

  2089. us to be

  2090. his own.

  2091. Let's pray

  2092. together.

  2093. Father,

  2094. we thank

  2095. you for

  2096. your word

  2097. to us.

  2098. We thank

  2099. you for

  2100. this prophet

  2101. Amos and

  2102. for the

  2103. way that

  2104. you,

  2105. through him,

  2106. are able

  2107. to present

  2108. your truth

  2109. to us.

  2110. We thank

  2111. you for

  2112. your passion

  2113. for justice,

  2114. that you

  2115. hate injustice,

  2116. that you

  2117. hate hypocrisy

  2118. and those

  2119. who would

  2120. present

  2121. themselves as

  2122. being religious

  2123. and upright

  2124. before you,

  2125. but actually

  2126. in their

  2127. hearts and

  2128. their actions

  2129. disprove it.

  2130. We pray

  2131. that we may

  2132. not be like

  2133. that.

  2134. That we

  2135. may have

  2136. a concern

  2137. for justice

  2138. in our

  2139. world,

  2140. that we

  2141. may have

  2142. a concern

  2143. for those

  2144. in our

  2145. world who

  2146. don't know

  2147. the Lord

  2148. Jesus and

  2149. a real

  2150. desire to

  2151. bring them

  2152. to him.

  2153. And that

  2154. when we

  2155. worship,

  2156. when we

  2157. actively come

  2158. before you

  2159. with our

  2160. songs of

  2161. thanksgiving,

  2162. with our

  2163. words of

  2164. praise,

  2165. that it

  2166. may be

  2167. done with

  2168. clean hands

  2169. and pure

  2170. hearts,

  2171. and that it

  2172. may truly be

  2173. honouring to

  2174. you.

  2175. Thank you for

  2176. our presence

  2177. this evening.

  2178. We ask

  2179. for your

  2180. blessing now

  2181. on us as

  2182. we part,

  2183. as we

  2184. give thanks

  2185. in Jesus'

  2186. name.

  2187. Amen.
