  1. I was pleased to hear that Peter said this was only the third difficult chapter in Amos

  2. because I was pretty convinced that the last four have been pretty challenging

  3. and tonight I think is the toughest.

  4. So we're in chapter 5 and we're with Amos,

  5. who is a southern prophet from Tekoa, which is down in the southeast near Bethlehem.

  6. And he's gone north. He's preaching to Israel.

  7. He is in every sense of the word a missionary who has crossed cultural lines

  8. in order to bring God's word to bear on a local population.

  9. It is about 760 BC.

  10. And as Amos is preaching, the God of the universe is roaring at Israel in judgment.

  11. Now week one we learned that there was a combination that unlocked Amos for us.

  12. Can anyone remember how we get into Amos?

  13. It's encouraging.

  14. 8351, brilliant.

  15. 8351.

  16. And we start with eight oracles of judgment.

  17. Six are to the surrounding enemies of Israel.

  18. And God is basically judging them for what in effect are war crimes.

  19. Massacring people and performing heinous acts.

  20. The seventh oracle of judgment is to Judah.

  21. And God is judging Judah for their disobedience, that they have God's law,

  22. and yet they've decided to trample over it and disobey anyway.

  23. At this point, Israel is loving Amos until we get to verse 6 of chapter 2,

  24. at which point God's cross has turned on Israel themselves.

  25. And it's a catalogue of enormous problems.

  26. The two main ones being hypocritical worship and social injustice.

  27. They're not loving God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  28. In fact, they're hardly loving him at all and just keeping up appearances.

  29. And at the same time, they're trampling over the poor in Israel.

  30. We then get three sermons of rebuke.

  31. And this is the third one we're in tonight.

  32. We started with Mike in chapter 3.

  33. And it was a very bleak chapter.

  34. It was a very bleak chapter indeed.

  35. But there was one ray of hope where God speaks about his remnants.

  36. And I think he speaks about it in rather peculiar terms in verse 12.

  37. This is what the Lord says.

  38. As a shepherd rescues from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear.

  39. That's what he's saying about the remnant.

  40. Just there's a little bit left that God is going to preserve and rescue.

  41. And then last week in chapter 4 with Ian,

  42. we had this wonderful sermon that was giving us a real way into chapter 4.

  43. And again, it was another bleak chapter.

  44. But we did see God's fatherly heart disciplining Israel in order to get their attention.

  45. He talks about all the ways in the past that God had tried to get his people to return to him.

  46. And yet they would not come.

  47. And so after the three sermons of rebuke,

  48. we get five visions of judgment, which we'll start next week with Graham.

  49. And then we get one oracle of salvation.

  50. And I have to say, Amos is tough going.

  51. It is tough, tough going.

  52. In fact, it's a bit like being a child on a long car journey.

  53. And every mile, you ask your parents, are we there yet?

  54. And the parents go, we're not there yet.

  55. In fact, we're not going to be there for quite a while.

  56. It was like when I used to drive down to Bournemouth, where I lived from Aberdeen.

  57. And you get below Birmingham and you think we're nearly there.

  58. You're not nearly there.

  59. It just gets busier and the roads get more boring.

  60. Until you finally arrive in Bournemouth, which is a wonderful place to live.

  61. And so every week from going through five and then six and then seven and then eight,

  62. we're going to go, are we there yet?

  63. And the answer will be no, but we will get there in the end.

  64. We will get to the end of chapter nine.

  65. And I promise it will be worth it.

  66. And if it isn't, Neal will give you a full refund

  67. for all the sermons that you turned up to.

  68. And so we come to this, which is the third sermon that Amos has preached.

  69. It's kind of like the story of the new preacher who went to a new church

  70. and he stood on the pulpit on his first Sunday and said,

  71. please could you open your Bibles to 1 Peter chapter two, verse 12.

  72. He read, live such good lives among the pagans

  73. that though they accuse you of doing wrong,

  74. they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits.

  75. The congregation were absolutely spellbound.

  76. They greeted him at the door with warm handshakes,

  77. saying how much they've been utterly edified by his teaching that morning.

  78. The next Sunday he gets up and he says,

  79. please would you turn in your Bibles to 1 Peter chapter two,

  80. verse 12, live such good lives among the pagans

  81. that though they accuse you of doing wrong,

  82. they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits.

  83. Everyone looks a bit permused,

  84. but they're greatly edified by his teaching

  85. and greet him warmly at the door afterwards.

  86. Week three, he says,

  87. please open your Bibles to 1 Peter chapter two, verse 12.

  88. People start to look concerned.

  89. And then week four,

  90. please open your Bibles to 1 Peter chapter two, verse 12.

  91. Finally, one of the women in the congregation

  92. grabs him at the door and says,

  93. thank you for your teaching,

  94. but is there more in our Bibles than 1 Peter chapter two, verse 12?

  95. You seem to be preaching that every week.

  96. To which he said,

  97. my dear sister,

  98. I'll keep preaching it until you start doing it.

  99. And then we'll move on to the rest of the Bible.

  100. That's kind of like what Amos is doing.

  101. The three sermons are in fact very, very similar.

  102. He is chastising God's people, Israel,

  103. for their hypocritical worship and their social injustice.

  104. He's holding those two up again and again and again.

  105. And he's going to keep preaching it until Israel do something about it.

  106. And so in chapter three, God is roaring.

  107. And in chapter four, God is roaring as Amos preaches,

  108. tells the people where they're going wrong.

  109. But in chapter five, the tone changes remarkably.

  110. And we move from God roaring at his people

  111. to almost like Amos conducting Israel's funeral.

  112. It's almost like we've got a picture of what it will look like.

  113. It seems to be a little bit too late.

  114. We're getting out of a window into Israel's future funeral

  115. with Amos standing at the front of the chapel,

  116. giving the eulogy.

  117. Let's read the first three verses.

  118. Hear this word, Israel.

  119. This lament I take up concerning you fallen is virgin Israel,

  120. never to rise again,

  121. deserted in her own land with no one to lift her up.

  122. This is what the sovereign Lord says to Israel.

  123. Your city that marches out a thousand strong

  124. will have only a hundred left.

  125. Your town that marches out a hundred strong

  126. will have only ten left.

  127. There's been a death in Israel and Israel has died.

  128. And it's been reduced to about a tenth.

  129. That it seems that as Amos stands and speaks,

  130. the lament pours out of his mouth.

  131. And I guess it's very similar to when Jesus speaks

  132. in Luke 19 verses 41 to 44.

    Luke 19:41–44

  133. So he approached Jerusalem and saw the city.

  134. He wept over it and said,

  135. If you, even you, had only known on this day

  136. what would bring you peace.

  137. But now it is hidden from your eyes,

  138. the days will come upon you

  139. when your enemies will build an embankment against you

  140. and encircle you and hem you in on every side.

  141. They will dash you to the ground,

  142. you and the children within your walls.

  143. They will not leave one stone on another

  144. because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you.

  145. It's that same idea that it's too late.

  146. That's really where we're coming to in Amos chapter 5.

    Amos 5 chapter mention

  147. And Amos chapter 5 is the very center of the book.

    Amos 5 chapter mention

  148. And if you write Hebrew,

  149. which I'm sure all of you do,

  150. you put the most important thing

  151. right in the middle of your book.

  152. So though this is the third sermon he's preached,

  153. this is the very knob of everything that Amos is about.

  154. And it's long, but I want us to see six key themes.

  155. And hopefully this will just give us a framework

  156. if we go back and look at Amos in the week.

  157. So the first thing we see is that sin is catalogued.

  158. Let me read verses 4 to 6, 7 and 10 and 12.

  159. This is what the Lord says to Israel.

  160. Seek me and live.

  161. Do not seek Bethel.

  162. Do not go to Gilgal.

  163. Do not journey to Beersheba.

  164. For Gilgal will surely go into exile

  165. and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.

  166. Seek the Lord and live

  167. or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire.

  168. It will devour them

  169. and Bethel will have no one to quench it.

  170. There are those who turn justice into bitterness

  171. and cast righteousness to the ground.

  172. Verse 10.

  173. There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in courts

  174. and detest the one who tells the truth.

  175. You levy a straw tax on the poor

  176. and impose a tax on their grain.

  177. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,

  178. you will not live in them.

  179. Though you have planted lush vineyards,

  180. you will not drink their wine.

  181. For I know how many are your offenses

  182. and how great your sins.

  183. There are those who oppress the innocent

  184. and take bribes

  185. and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

  186. Therefore, the prudent keep quiet in such times

  187. for the times are evil.

  188. And it's the same sins that he's bringing up again and again

  189. and it's hypocritical worship.

  190. Look at verse 5.

  191. There are three place names that are mentioned.

  192. Bethel, Gilgal and Beersheba.

  193. And these are all important places in Israel.

  194. But they're also chronological.

  195. So when Jeroboam, son of Nebat,

  196. Jeroboam I sets up Israel as an independent kingdom

  197. away from Judah,

  198. he sets up two special places where he has a golden calf.

  199. One Dan in the north,

  200. one Bethel in the south.

  201. And God says,

  202. this is happening,

  203. but don't think Bethel will save you.

  204. Don't think this recent relic will give you anything.

  205. And then he mentions Gilgal,

  206. which is the first place that Joshua

  207. and the 12 tribes celebrate

  208. when they get into the promised land.

  209. God says,

  210. don't even think Gilgal will save you.

  211. Don't even think Gilgal will afford you any protection

  212. when my judgment comes.

  213. And then he says,

  214. don't even go to Beersheba.

  215. Now Beersheba is all the way back in Genesis 21.

  216. This is Abraham,

  217. the very father of the nation,

  218. who forms a treaty with Abimelech there

  219. and calls on the name of the Lord as the Lord eternal.

  220. God says,

  221. don't even go to Beersheba.

  222. The only place.

  223. Don't go on some pilgrimage

  224. to all the historic relics of Israel's past

  225. because they're all empty.

  226. They're all dysfunctional now,

  227. just like your worship has become.

  228. Don't retreat to religious observance,

  229. he says.

  230. Retreat to me.

  231. Seek me and live.

  232. Turn to me.

  233. The very thing that he was trying to do

  234. in all of chapter four.

  235. I've sent this to you and that to you

  236. and this happened

  237. and it was all so you'd return to me.

  238. And so God says,

  239. don't whatever you do

  240. go on some religious tourist route

  241. through your history.

  242. Seek me.

  243. Seek me because your worship is hypocritical.

  244. It's been the case throughout all of Israel's history.

  245. This quote from Isaiah 29 picked up by Jesus.

  246. The Lord says,

  247. these people come near to me with their mouth

  248. and honor me with their lips,

  249. but their hearts are far from me.

  250. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules.

  251. They have been taught.

  252. That could be a summation of everything we're going to see

  253. in Amos chapter five.

  254. It was fine.

  255. People were going to church.

  256. People were offering sacrifices.

  257. It looked pretty good on the outside,

  258. but inwardly it was completely rotten

  259. and they were in grave danger

  260. because the tail was wagging the dog

  261. and the process of bringing sacrifices

  262. had far exceeded

  263. and become more important

  264. than the purpose for which they did it.

  265. And so in the summer,

  266. I was doing a wedding in Bordeaux

  267. and Bordeaux has got wonderful churches

  268. that you can go and visit.

  269. It's actually built on swampland

  270. so they never have the bell tower

  271. connected to the cathedral

  272. because when the bell rings,

  273. the bell tower moves,

  274. they all fall over

  275. and they don't want it affecting

  276. these huge church buildings they have.

  277. But actually,

  278. if you went to every single church

  279. and Aileen loved the holiday

  280. because that's pretty much all we did in Bordeaux,

  281. you would think that you worship God

  282. with a camera,

  283. wearing shorts,

  284. reading a guidebook in a different language

  285. because in all these churches,

  286. that's all that was going on.

  287. It looked like real

  288. church buildings

  289. in which there should be

  290. great worship of God

  291. but all there was

  292. was full of tourists

  293. with selfie sticks

  294. taking pictures in front of other people.

  295. It was all appearance without substance,

  296. empty form with no faith

  297. and that's what God is saying.

  298. Your worship is hypocritical

  299. and your past will not save you.

  300. And it's the precipice

  301. over which we all stare

  302. because we can all retreat

  303. to just playing a role,

  304. just keeping up appearances,

  305. just going through the motions.

  306. God says,

  307. there's a funeral coming

  308. because you will not turn to me

  309. and have life.

  310. The second thing he picks up

  311. is social injustice again

  312. and there's a real catalogue again.

  313. There are those who turn justice

  314. into bitterness.

  315. People came looking for justice

  316. but they were trampled down

  317. and now the bitterness just grew

  318. because what they deserved

  319. they did not get

  320. and righteousness was cast to the ground

  321. like it was worthless.

  322. People hate the courts,

  323. verse 10.

  324. The magistrate who was going to give justice

  325. had become like the traffic warden

  326. and the people that were told,

  327. the people who told the truth

  328. were just told to shut up.

  329. Shut up.

  330. Every time somebody said,

  331. no, this is what God says.

  332. Shut up.

  333. Shut up.

  334. We don't want to hear.

  335. They tax the poor.

  336. They make them pay extortionate amounts

  337. for their grain.

  338. It's meant that they've all got mansions

  339. they can live in

  340. but God is very clear

  341. you will not live in them.

  342. You've stored up all this money

  343. to build a very grand nine bedroom house

  344. but it will remain empty.

  345. Though you may have boarded off plot

  346. you will never live in it.

  347. And they've got extensive vineyards.

  348. They're thinking we can have

  349. some real vintage Merlot

  350. from these wonderful vines

  351. but the problem with Merlot

  352. is it takes time to mature.

  353. And God says,

  354. well, you may harvest

  355. and you may trample

  356. but you will not drink

  357. because there's a funeral coming

  358. because

  359. you haven't worshipped me rightly

  360. and you've oppressed the poor.

  361. And so 12a is the verdict

  362. for I know

  363. how many your offences

  364. and how great

  365. your sins.

  366. Your sin is excessive

  367. and it is

  368. extensive.

  369. Their sins are catalogued.

  370. And verse 13

  371. has one of two interpretations

  372. therefore the prudent

  373. keep quiet in such times

  374. for the times are evil.

  375. Some commentators say

  376. the times are so evil

  377. that it's not worth

  378. saying anything.

  379. So saturated in sin

  380. is Israel culture.

  381. But some people go the other way

  382. and say,

  383. well, when God does judge

  384. all this sin

  385. everyone's mouths

  386. will be stopped

  387. because there'll be

  388. absolutely no excuse

  389. for the way that they've carried on.

  390. Hypocritical worship

  391. and social injustice

  392. the sins catalogued

  393. which were the sins

  394. that God catalogued

  395. in chapter 4

  396. the sins that God catalogued

  397. in chapter 3

  398. and the sins that God catalogued

  399. at the end of chapter 2.

  400. And so what do we learn?

  401. That these two things

  402. really matter to God.

  403. These are the things

  404. so close to his heart

  405. that we worship him

  406. with all our heart, soul, mind

  407. and strength

  408. and that we love

  409. our neighbor as ourselves.

  410. Our neighbor being

  411. those like us

  412. and those not like us.

  413. Those at the very bottom

  414. of the rung

  415. of society.

  416. There is one little ray of hope

  417. and we see that mercy

  418. is offered.

  419. Look at verse 4

  420. the end of verse 4

  421. seek me and live.

  422. Verse 6

  423. seek the Lord and live.

  424. Verse 14

  425. seek good nor evil

  426. that you may live.

  427. Verse 15

  428. hate evil

  429. love good

  430. maintain justice.

  431. In the courts

  432. perhaps the Lord God Almighty

  433. will have mercy

  434. on the remnant of Joseph.

  435. These verses

  436. are like patches

  437. of blue sky

  438. amidst a mounting

  439. murky sky.

  440. The nation

  441. will be judged.

  442. That's already said

  443. the funeral

  444. will happen.

  445. Israel will be

  446. carried off

  447. by the Assyrians

  448. and they will never return.

  449. But God holds out here

  450. to the individual

  451. a chance

  452. to the repentant

  453. to be part

  454. of the remnant.

  455. He's holding out

  456. mercy

  457. to the individual.

  458. He says

  459. the ship

  460. is going to sink

  461. but there is room

  462. in the lifeboat

  463. if you will

  464. but turn to me.

  465. 90

  466. will be killed

  467. from those

  468. who march out

  469. from the town

  470. but there will be

  471. 10 left

  472. and you can be

  473. amongst those 10 left

  474. if you will turn.

  475. You can be

  476. like the hind legs

  477. of the deer

  478. rescued from the mouth

  479. of the lion.

  480. There is

  481. mercy

  482. even amidst

  483. the darkness.

  484. There is

  485. hope

  486. beyond

  487. the exile

  488. for those

  489. who will repent.

  490. and I guess

  491. as we

  492. come to the

  493. New Testament

  494. when God

  495. is very clear

  496. that he will

  497. judge the world

  498. in justice

  499. by the man

  500. he has appointed

  501. Jesus Christ

  502. there is still

  503. that hope

  504. for those

  505. who will look

  506. to the son

  507. and receive

  508. eternal life.

  509. There is mercy

  510. offered.

  511. There is still

  512. space

  513. for grace

  514. and we see

  515. this right

  516. in the middle

  517. of the chapter

  518. and dotted

  519. throughout it.

  520. then look

  521. with me

  522. at verses

  523. 15 and

  524. 16

  525. verses

  526. 16 and

  527. 17

  528. therefore

  529. this is what

  530. the Lord

  531. almighty

  532. says

  533. there will

  534. be wailing

  535. in all the

  536. streets

  537. and cries

  538. of anguish

  539. in every

  540. public square

  541. the farmers

  542. will be

  543. summoned

  544. to weep

  545. and the

  546. mourners

  547. to wail

  548. there will

  549. be wailing

  550. in all the

  551. vineyards

  552. for I will

  553. pass through

  554. your midst

  555. says the

  556. Lord.

  557. I don't know

  558. if you were

  559. aware but

  560. Wednesday was

  561. back to the

  562. future day

  563. which in

  564. back to the

  565. future 2

  566. Marty McFly

  567. goes forward

  568. to the

  569. 21st of

  570. October

  571. 2015

  572. and there

  573. was this

  574. real thing

  575. about

  576. did they

  577. get it

  578. right

  579. was the

  580. movie

  581. accurate

  582. to where

  583. we are

  584. now

  585. some of

  586. it was

  587. right

  588. none of

  589. us have

  590. got a

  591. hoverboard

  592. yet

  593. but we're

  594. ever

  595. hopeful

  596. and so

  597. what we

  598. get here

  599. is like

  600. back to

  601. the future

  602. we get

  603. this snapshot

  604. of what

  605. it will

  606. be like

  607. on this

  608. day when

  609. God

  610. visits

  611. and it's

  612. terrifying

  613. there'll be

  614. wailing in

  615. all the

  616. streets

  617. George

  618. Street

  619. Princess

  620. Street

  621. Ferry

  622. Road

  623. everybody

  624. is crying

  625. it's a

  626. scene of

  627. utter

  628. desolation

  629. in

  630. St.

  631. Andrew

  632. Square

  633. and

  634. Charlotte

  635. Square

  636. people are

  637. crying in

  638. anguish

  639. look at

  640. it

  641. end of

  642. verse

  643. 16

  644. the

  645. farmers

  646. will be

  647. summoned

  648. to

  649. weep

  650. no one

  651. bothers

  652. farmers

  653. if ever

  654. you've

  655. listened to

  656. an episode

  657. of the

  658. archers

  659. the only

  660. remarkable

  661. thing that

  662. happens is

  663. that nothing

  664. remarkable

  665. ever happens

  666. because farmers

  667. just go about

  668. their field

  669. tilling and

  670. sowing and

  671. harvesting

  672. they just get

  673. on with it

  674. but it's so

  675. serious now

  676. that the

  677. farmers are

  678. joining in

  679. even they've

  680. got wind

  681. of what will

  682. happen

  683. and the

  684. mourners

  685. to

  686. wail

  687. these

  688. professional

  689. mourners

  690. that people

  691. would call

  692. in to

  693. help

  694. bring a

  695. bit of

  696. theatre to

  697. a funeral

  698. they're not

  699. playing a

  700. role

  701. they're

  702. wailing

  703. for real

  704. and in

  705. vineyards

  706. these places

  707. synonymous with

  708. celebration and

  709. joy

  710. no one

  711. is laughing

  712. there's no

  713. good times

  714. everyone

  715. is

  716. terrified

  717. why

  718. because god

  719. has arrived

  720. the holy

  721. god has

  722. passed

  723. through their

  724. midst

  725. he threatened

  726. it in

  727. chapter 4

  728. verse 12

  729. therefore

  730. this is what

  731. i will do

  732. to you

  733. israel

  734. and because

  735. i will do

  736. this to

  737. you israel

  738. prepare

  739. to meet

  740. your god

  741. and he's

  742. arrived

  743. and it's a

  744. scene of

  745. utter

  746. desolation

  747. as a

  748. holy god

  749. meets a

  750. sinful

  751. people

  752. it has

  753. not gone

  754. well for

  755. them

  756. and rather

  757. than be

  758. great joy

  759. it's resulted

  760. in great

  761. loss

  762. that a

  763. holy god

  764. and sinful

  765. people cannot

  766. mix

  767. we see it

  768. in isaiah's

  769. life in

  770. chapter 6

  771. when he

  772. sees the

  773. lord seated

  774. on the

  775. throne

  776. this is

  777. the holiest

  778. man

  779. amongst

  780. god's

  781. people

  782. and what

  783. does he

  784. say

  785. woe is

  786. me

  787. for i'm

  788. a man

  789. of unclean

  790. lips

  791. john

  792. on the

  793. island

  794. of

  795. patmos

  796. who

  797. meets

  798. the

  799. risen

  800. jesus

  801. and he

  802. turns

  803. around

  804. and sees

  805. him

  806. and he

  807. says i

  808. fell on

  809. the

  810. ground

  811. as though

  812. dead

  813. and if that

  814. was what it

  815. was like for

  816. those two

  817. people just

  818. imagine what

  819. it's like for

  820. these people

  821. when their

  822. god visits

  823. while they're

  824. playing in the

  825. slurry of

  826. their own

  827. sin

  828. and look what

  829. this god is

  830. like in verse

  831. eight

  832. he who made

  833. the pleiades

  834. and orion

  835. who turns

  836. midnight into

  837. dawn and

  838. darkens day

  839. into night

  840. who calls for

  841. waters of the

  842. sea and pours

  843. them out over

  844. the face of

  845. the land

  846. the lord

  847. is his name

  848. with a blinding

  849. flash he destroys

  850. the stronghold

  851. and brings the

  852. fortified city

  853. to ruin

  854. this is the

  855. all-powerful

  856. god visiting

  857. his people

  858. and they've

  859. not been

  860. ready

  861. and they've

  862. not been

  863. excited by

  864. his coming

  865. they haven't

  866. worshipped him

  867. rightly

  868. and they

  869. have not

  870. loved their

  871. neighbours

  872. themselves

  873. and it's

  874. all lost

  875. but it's

  876. of great

  877. surprise to

  878. them

  879. verses 18

  880. to 20

  881. woe to

  882. you who

  883. long for

  884. the day

  885. of the

  886. lord

  887. why do

  888. you long

  889. for the

  890. day of

  891. the lord

  892. that day

  893. will be

  894. darkness

  895. not light

  896. it will

  897. be as

  898. though a

  899. man fled

  900. from a

  901. lion only

  902. to meet

  903. a bear

  904. as though

  905. he entered

  906. his house

  907. and rested

  908. his hand

  909. on the wall

  910. only to have

  911. a snake

  912. bite him

  913. will not

  914. the day

  915. of the

  916. lord be

  917. darkness

  918. not light

  919. pitch dark

  920. without a

  921. ray of

  922. brightness

  923. and so

  924. you can

  925. see them

  926. they're all

  927. looking for

  928. the day

  929. of the

  930. lord

  931. this will

  932. go well

  933. where is

  934. raul

  935. we bought

  936. some sacrifices

  937. and some

  938. tithes

  939. this morning

  940. the day

  941. of the

  942. lord will

  943. be great

  944. for us

  945. and god

  946. gives them

  947. a reality

  948. check

  949. and he

  950. says you

  951. think it's

  952. going to be

  953. great

  954. it won't

  955. be great

  956. you think

  957. it's going

  958. to be

  959. light

  960. it won't

  961. be light

  962. it'll be

  963. darkness

  964. because

  965. your

  966. complacency

  967. has deceived

  968. you into

  969. thinking that

  970. you're safe

  971. and you're

  972. not safe

  973. look at

  974. verse 19

  975. isn't that

  976. the ultimate

  977. example of

  978. out of the

  979. frying pan

  980. into the

  981. fire

  982. it will be

  983. as though a

  984. man fled

  985. from a

  986. lion only

  987. to meet

  988. a bear

  989. you think

  990. you've

  991. escaped

  992. you've

  993. not

  994. escaped

  995. there's

  996. a bear

  997. waiting

  998. for you

  999. as the

  1000. lord meets

  1001. you in

  1002. your sin

  1003. as though

  1004. he entered

  1005. his house

  1006. the house

  1007. that final

  1008. place of

  1009. safety

  1010. and what

  1011. did he

  1012. do

  1013. he rested

  1014. his hand

  1015. on the

  1016. wall

  1017. to catch

  1018. his breath

  1019. and there

  1020. was a

  1021. snake

  1022. to bite

  1023. him

  1024. this is a

  1025. real reality

  1026. check for

  1027. Israel

  1028. that they

  1029. think that

  1030. God could

  1031. have nothing

  1032. against them

  1033. that when

  1034. he comes

  1035. it will be

  1036. sheer light

  1037. and sheer

  1038. delight

  1039. and it

  1040. won't

  1041. it'll be

  1042. darkness

  1043. and devastation

  1044. as a

  1045. holy God

  1046. meets

  1047. his sinful

  1048. complacent

  1049. people

  1050. who have

  1051. failed

  1052. to be

  1053. failed

  1054. with the

  1055. great blessing

  1056. he's shown

  1057. them

  1058. to be a

  1059. blessing

  1060. and a

  1061. light

  1062. to the

  1063. nations

  1064. verse 21

  1065. is where we

  1066. really get

  1067. the rub of

  1068. the green

  1069. look at

  1070. what God

  1071. says

  1072. look at

  1073. all the

  1074. words

  1075. he uses

  1076. to describe

  1077. how infuriated

  1078. and against

  1079. all their

  1080. worship he

  1081. is

  1082. I hate

  1083. I despise

  1084. your religious

  1085. festivals

  1086. your assemblies

  1087. are a stench

  1088. to me

  1089. even though

  1090. you bring me

  1091. burnt offerings

  1092. and grain offerings

  1093. I will not

  1094. accept them

  1095. though you bring

  1096. choice fellowship

  1097. offerings

  1098. I will have

  1099. no regard

  1100. for them

  1101. away with

  1102. the noise

  1103. of your songs

  1104. I will not

  1105. listen to the

  1106. music of your

  1107. hearts

  1108. but let

  1109. justice roll

  1110. on like a

  1111. river

  1112. righteousness

  1113. like a

  1114. never

  1115. failing

  1116. stream

  1117. God

  1118. peels

  1119. back the

  1120. mask of

  1121. Israel's

  1122. religious

  1123. life

  1124. and he

  1125. says this

  1126. is an

  1127. utter

  1128. abomination

  1129. rather than

  1130. being pleasing

  1131. and acceptable

  1132. to me

  1133. it actually

  1134. just riles

  1135. me to

  1136. hatred

  1137. when you

  1138. gather as a

  1139. church it

  1140. is like a

  1141. stench

  1142. in my

  1143. nostrils

  1144. look what he

  1145. says about

  1146. the harp

  1147. now who

  1148. could not

  1149. like the

  1150. noise of

  1151. a harp

  1152. blink

  1153. blink

  1154. blink

  1155. blink

  1156. blink

  1157. blink

  1158. there's

  1159. nothing

  1160. that could

  1161. be bad

  1162. about that

  1163. but what

  1164. does he

  1165. say I

  1166. will not

  1167. listen

  1168. to the

  1169. music of

  1170. your harp

  1171. this instrument

  1172. synonymous

  1173. with joy

  1174. and God

  1175. says I

  1176. want nothing

  1177. to do

  1178. with it

  1179. because it's

  1180. empty

  1181. it's

  1182. hypocritical

  1183. you're going

  1184. through the

  1185. motions

  1186. you're so

  1187. busy

  1188. in religious

  1189. activity

  1190. and yet your

  1191. heart is not

  1192. inance

  1193. it's like

  1194. you're wearing

  1195. a wedding ring

  1196. as a sign

  1197. of your

  1198. marriage

  1199. and yet you

  1200. are conducting

  1201. adulterous

  1202. relationships

  1203. in every

  1204. postcode

  1205. of the

  1206. city

  1207. it's just

  1208. simple and

  1209. ritual

  1210. without any

  1211. substance

  1212. at all

  1213. and look

  1214. what God

  1215. says in

  1216. verse 24

  1217. this is what

  1218. he's after

  1219. which is where

  1220. it links

  1221. with Psalm

  1222. 51 that

  1223. Peter read

  1224. for us at

  1225. the beginning

  1226. but let

  1227. justice

  1228. roll on

  1229. like a river

  1230. righteousness

  1231. like a

  1232. never failing

  1233. stream

  1234. you are

  1235. exhausting

  1236. yourself in

  1237. religious

  1238. activity

  1239. but what

  1240. do I

  1241. want

  1242. I want

  1243. justice

  1244. and

  1245. righteousness

  1246. and I

  1247. want it

  1248. to flow

  1249. I want

  1250. it to be

  1251. this constant

  1252. cycle

  1253. this thing

  1254. that is

  1255. always

  1256. prevalent

  1257. in your

  1258. lives

  1259. justice

  1260. right

  1261. living

  1262. towards

  1263. your

  1264. fellow

  1265. man

  1266. and

  1267. righteousness

  1268. right

  1269. living

  1270. before

  1271. God

  1272. that's

  1273. what I

  1274. want

  1275. I don't

  1276. want your

  1277. offerings

  1278. I don't

  1279. want your

  1280. sacrifices

  1281. I don't

  1282. want your

  1283. harp

  1284. quartet

  1285. I'm not

  1286. bothered

  1287. how many

  1288. offerings

  1289. you bring

  1290. because until

  1291. you get

  1292. those two

  1293. things right

  1294. it's utterly

  1295. useless

  1296. and you're

  1297. wasting

  1298. everybody's

  1299. time

  1300. and you're

  1301. just storing

  1302. up judgment

  1303. for yourself

  1304. and so we

  1305. look at our

  1306. lives and

  1307. could we

  1308. say that

  1309. my life

  1310. is a

  1311. constant

  1312. flow of

  1313. justice

  1314. where I

  1315. am

  1316. passionate

  1317. about

  1318. loving those

  1319. that God

  1320. loves and

  1321. this special

  1322. place he

  1323. has in his

  1324. heart for

  1325. those that

  1326. are poor

  1327. and downtrodden

  1328. is there

  1329. this constant

  1330. desire to

  1331. help them

  1332. in and

  1333. through my

  1334. life

  1335. and what

  1336. about how

  1337. I walk

  1338. before God

  1339. is there

  1340. this constant

  1341. desire that

  1342. I will live

  1343. life before

  1344. an audience

  1345. of one

  1346. knowing that

  1347. he sees

  1348. all and

  1349. longs to

  1350. be glorified

  1351. in all

  1352. because until

  1353. I get those

  1354. two things

  1355. right church

  1356. attendance

  1357. doesn't matter

  1358. the songs I

  1359. sing don't

  1360. matter if

  1361. my heart

  1362. is not right

  1363. before him

  1364. it is

  1365. possible

  1366. for God

  1367. to hate

  1368. the fact

  1369. that you're

  1370. going to

  1371. church if

  1372. you go to

  1373. church wrongly

  1374. to not

  1375. accept the

  1376. songs out

  1377. of your

  1378. mouth if

  1379. it is just

  1380. brubble

  1381. and froth

  1382. with no

  1383. substance at

  1384. all

  1385. so by the

  1386. time we get

  1387. to the end

  1388. of the old

  1389. testament

  1390. and Israel

  1391. has gone

  1392. from bad

  1393. to worse

  1394. and has

  1395. been in

  1396. exile

  1397. and Judah

  1398. is back

  1399. in the

  1400. town but

  1401. they're

  1402. miles away

  1403. from where

  1404. they would

  1405. be

  1406. God just

  1407. says I

  1408. wish someone

  1409. would shut

  1410. the temple

  1411. door

  1412. put out the

  1413. fires on the

  1414. altar because

  1415. it's

  1416. abominable

  1417. to me

  1418. this has

  1419. not gone

  1420. well for

  1421. Israel

  1422. neither will

  1423. it go well

  1424. for us

  1425. it's just

  1426. bubble and

  1427. froth with

  1428. no substance

  1429. let me finish

  1430. with this

  1431. verses 25

  1432. to 27

  1433. did you

  1434. bring me

  1435. sacrifices

  1436. and offerings

  1437. for 40

  1438. years in

  1439. the wilderness

  1440. people of

  1441. Israel

  1442. you have

  1443. lifted up

  1444. the shrines

  1445. of your

  1446. king

  1447. the pedestal

  1448. of your

  1449. idols

  1450. the star

  1451. of your

  1452. God

  1453. which you

  1454. made for

  1455. yourselves

  1456. therefore I

  1457. will send

  1458. you into

  1459. exile beyond

  1460. Damascus

  1461. says the

  1462. Lord

  1463. whose name

  1464. is God

  1465. almighty

  1466. here's the

  1467. question

  1468. did the

  1469. people of

  1470. Israel bring

  1471. sacrifices

  1472. and offerings

  1473. to God

  1474. in the

  1475. wilderness

  1476. oh yes

  1477. they did

  1478. because they

  1479. had this

  1480. tent of

  1481. meeting where

  1482. they could

  1483. go and

  1484. offer them

  1485. but here's

  1486. what's in

  1487. view

  1488. that Israel

  1489. did all

  1490. these things

  1491. they got up

  1492. in the morning

  1493. they unzipped

  1494. their tent

  1495. and they went

  1496. and did their

  1497. religious duty

  1498. before Yahweh

  1499. who had

  1500. brought them

  1501. out of Egypt

  1502. the problem

  1503. was is when

  1504. they went

  1505. into their

  1506. tent at night

  1507. and the

  1508. flaps came

  1509. down

  1510. then out

  1511. from under

  1512. the pillow

  1513. came the

  1514. gods of

  1515. Egypt

  1516. sack off

  1517. your king

  1518. Kaiwan your

  1519. idols and

  1520. your star

  1521. gods

  1522. do you see

  1523. how duplicitous

  1524. they were

  1525. we'll worship

  1526. gods

  1527. but we'll

  1528. keep these

  1529. as well

  1530. and so I

  1531. wonder as we

  1532. come into

  1533. land

  1534. that we're

  1535. here tonight

  1536. and we're

  1537. singing trust

  1538. and obey

  1539. there's no

  1540. other way

  1541. to be happy

  1542. in Jesus

  1543. we're singing

  1544. all that

  1545. thrills my

  1546. heart is

  1547. Jesus

  1548. he is

  1549. everything

  1550. to me

  1551. but I

  1552. wonder what

  1553. the reality

  1554. will be on

  1555. Monday morning

  1556. what idols

  1557. we'll bring

  1558. out from

  1559. behind up

  1560. from under

  1561. our own

  1562. pillows

  1563. whether it

  1564. will be

  1565. materialism

  1566. and we'll

  1567. be ogling

  1568. the Amazon

  1569. catalogue

  1570. I wonder

  1571. where our

  1572. security will

  1573. be found

  1574. whether it's

  1575. in the God

  1576. who's revealed

  1577. himself

  1578. or whether

  1579. it's in the

  1580. bank statement

  1581. that drops

  1582. through the

  1583. door on

  1584. Tuesday

  1585. morning

  1586. and here's

  1587. the thing

  1588. the people

  1589. in the

  1590. wilderness

  1591. thought they

  1592. were getting

  1593. away with

  1594. it and they

  1595. weren't

  1596. God says

  1597. I saw you

  1598. pull those

  1599. idols out

  1600. and let's

  1601. be clear

  1602. he sees

  1603. the idols

  1604. that we

  1605. cleave to

  1606. and cling

  1607. to

  1608. and he

  1609. finishes by

  1610. saying you'll

  1611. go into

  1612. exile into

  1613. Damascus and

  1614. it's all your

  1615. own fault

  1616. I gave

  1617. you

  1618. everything

  1619. but you

  1620. still chose

  1621. to worship

  1622. me wrongly

  1623. and oppress

  1624. the poor

  1625. I was preaching

  1626. at Kirk

  1627. Liston this

  1628. morning

  1629. and I was

  1630. trying to

  1631. challenge them

  1632. about this

  1633. Old Testament

  1634. idea of being

  1635. blameless

  1636. we read of

  1637. Noah and

  1638. Job and

  1639. David being

  1640. blameless before

  1641. the Lord

  1642. blameless doesn't

  1643. mean they were

  1644. sinless

  1645. it just

  1646. meant that

  1647. their insides

  1648. were the

  1649. same as

  1650. their outsides

  1651. that the

  1652. reality of

  1653. how they

  1654. love God

  1655. in their

  1656. hearts

  1657. seeped out

  1658. into every

  1659. area of

  1660. their lives

  1661. and I

  1662. wonder if

  1663. that's the

  1664. challenge

  1665. coming to

  1666. us from

  1667. this chapter

  1668. is to put

  1669. away hypocrisy

  1670. to put away

  1671. going through

  1672. the motions

  1673. out of

  1674. religious duty

  1675. and to

  1676. let Jesus

  1677. take his

  1678. right place

  1679. in our

  1680. hearts

  1681. that it

  1682. might

  1683. transform

  1684. every area

  1685. of our

  1686. lives

  1687. and it

  1688. might make

  1689. a real

  1690. difference

  1691. to our

  1692. neighbours

  1693. wherever they

  1694. might be

  1695. God

  1696. catalogues

  1697. their sin

  1698. they're

  1699. terrified by

  1700. his presence

  1701. he extinguishes

  1702. their light

  1703. on the day

  1704. of the Lord

  1705. he says

  1706. I hate

  1707. your worship

  1708. and I

  1709. saw your

  1710. idolatry

  1711. we read

  1712. in the

  1713. New Testament

  1714. that many

  1715. people come

  1716. to Jesus

  1717. on the last

  1718. day and

  1719. say Lord

  1720. Lord

  1721. we prophesied

  1722. in your

  1723. name and

  1724. we even

  1725. healed people

  1726. and Jesus

  1727. says away

  1728. with me

  1729. I never

  1730. knew you

  1731. the same

  1732. reality seems

  1733. to be there

  1734. so let's be

  1735. very careful

  1736. as we listen

  1737. to these

  1738. words

  1739. that we

  1740. don't leave

  1741. here

  1742. without

  1743. having our

  1744. whole lives

  1745. committed

  1746. to and

  1747. connected

  1748. to the

  1749. Lord

  1750. Jesus

  1751. who makes

  1752. our worship

  1753. acceptable

  1754. and transforms

  1755. our lives

  1756. that we might

  1757. love what

  1758. God loves

  1759. and do

  1760. what God

  1761. calls us

  1762. to do

  1763. let's pray

  1764. Father God

  1765. was so

  1766. challenged

  1767. that Israel

  1768. was just

  1769. playing at

  1770. it

  1771. they were

  1772. privileged as

  1773. your people

  1774. and yet

  1775. walked away

  1776. and rebelled

  1777. in such a

  1778. complacent

  1779. way

  1780. and Lord

  1781. we thank

  1782. you so

  1783. much

  1784. that you've

  1785. given us

  1786. so much

  1787. you've given

  1788. us your

  1789. word

  1790. you've given

  1791. us your

  1792. spirit

  1793. you've opened

  1794. your eyes

  1795. to you've

  1796. opened our

  1797. eyes to your

  1798. son

  1799. Father you've

  1800. placed us in

  1801. a church and

  1802. yet we're so

  1803. conscious

  1804. we're so

  1805. conscious that

  1806. we're tempted

  1807. to just play

  1808. and go through

  1809. the motions

  1810. we're tempted

  1811. to just do

  1812. the little bit

  1813. that we need

  1814. to do in

  1815. order to keep

  1816. up appearances

  1817. and so Lord

  1818. I pray that

  1819. your spirit

  1820. would so

  1821. glorify your

  1822. son in our

  1823. lives that he

  1824. might transform

  1825. everything about

  1826. us

  1827. that we might

  1828. worship you

  1829. rightly

  1830. wholeheartedly

  1831. that we might

  1832. be those that

  1833. are blameless

  1834. and Father

  1835. that we might

  1836. love justice

  1837. Father whether

  1838. it's the taxes

  1839. we pay or the

  1840. people we walk

  1841. by on the

  1842. streets

  1843. Father may we

  1844. not just turn a

  1845. blind eye

  1846. but Lord may we

  1847. love what you

  1848. love and as a

  1849. God who loves

  1850. them may we

  1851. love them and

  1852. help them and

  1853. serve them also

  1854. we pray this in

  1855. Jesus name and

  1856. for Jesus sake

  1857. Amen
