  1. Well, pleased to have a seat and a very good evening, everyone.

  2. I hope you've had a great afternoon in 1st of November,

  3. which I heard from Lawrence in Wales.

  4. It was 22.7 degrees, Lawrence.

  5. Unheard of, November.

  6. There we go.

  7. Amos chapter 6.

    Amos 6 chapter mention

  8. Please turn there in your Bibles.

  9. Also, I've made us a sermon outline this evening,

  10. which is going to massively help us, I think,

  11. see the big idea of what Amos 6 is all about.

  12. So if you don't have one of them,

  13. then please put up your hand.

  14. And Johnny, I'm sure, will be able to get one to you.

  15. Hopefully that's going to be very helpful for us this evening.

  16. What a joy it is to be together at the end of what is a busy week,

  17. and I'm sure on the cusp of what is going to be another busy week,

  18. just to spend time in God's presence.

  19. So why don't we pause and let's pray together

  20. before we dive into Amos chapter 6.

    Amos 6 chapter mention

  21. Let's pray together.

  22. Our gracious and loving God,

  23. we are so thankful for our time together this evening.

  24. Father, we ask that as we continue to look at this book of Amos,

  25. this sometimes difficult book to understand,

  26. Lord, that you would help us,

  27. by your Holy Spirit,

  28. to understand what you are saying to us.

  29. Would you help us to know more of you?

  30. Would you help us to see more of your goodness

  31. and your glory in this passage we ask in Jesus' name?

  32. Amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. So I want to begin by taking you back to your school days.

  35. I wonder if you were like me,

  36. my dad would come home after every day from work,

  37. and he would say to me,

  38. son, how was school today?

  39. And I replied, one word answer.

  40. I wonder if anyone else did this.

  41. One word.

  42. What was that word?

  43. Fine.

  44. Every time.

  45. Fine.

  46. And so my dad, bless his heart,

  47. he would try and get a bit more out of his stroppy teenager,

  48. and he would say,

  49. son, what about maths?

  50. Did you enjoy maths today?

  51. And I said, well, yeah, it's going well.

  52. What about English?

  53. You've been doing that project in Macbeth.

  54. Are you enjoying it?

  55. How's it going?

  56. Yeah, it's going all right.

  57. Not too bad.

  58. Quite like Macbeth.

  59. I said, well, what about history?

  60. You love history.

  61. Tell us about World War II.

  62. Tell us what you're learning about German history

  63. in the Weimar Republic.

  64. Yeah, it's all right.

  65. Teacher's a good guy.

  66. Everything was always fine.

  67. But I wonder if you were like me.

  68. There was one day in the school calendar

  69. that I dreaded above all others.

  70. And it was the day when I came home

  71. with my school report cards.

  72. Because that was the day that revealed

  73. that all things weren't in actual fact fine.

  74. And I remember those days well,

  75. with trembling hands and with knobbly knees.

  76. I would hand this report card to my dad,

  77. and out the door I sprinted to play football

  78. with my friends,

  79. because I was bracing myself for the worst.

  80. We all know that experience, don't we?

  81. What our mouths kept hidden,

  82. the report card so massively exposed.

  83. And I think that is a good way to understand

  84. what is going on in Amos chapter 6 this evening.

    Amos 6 chapter mention

  85. I found this a really helpful way

  86. for understanding what's going on here.

  87. This is the last part of the first section of this book,

  88. and it's the second of these warning or woe oracles

  89. that Amos has been bringing to God's people,

  90. the first one of which we saw last week.

  91. And I think what we need to understand

  92. is that if you had asked God's people at the time

  93. how things were going,

  94. they would probably tell you they were going fine.

  95. In fact, they were going better than fine.

  96. They are flying right now as a people.

  97. We are experiencing the favor and the blessing of the Lord.

  98. It's no doubt what they would have piously

  99. and presumptuously told you.

  100. Things are going good in the land.

  101. Remember, John introduced this letter a few weeks back.

  102. Things are going very well for Israel at this point.

  103. They are prosperous and they are victorious.

  104. These are good times on the surface for God's people.

  105. Things are going fine.

  106. Amos chapter 6.

    Amos 6 chapter mention

  107. He's about to deliver to them

  108. God's report card on how he thinks things are really going.

  109. And let me tell you, it is stinging.

  110. Right at the heart of this stinging take on things,

  111. the divine looking at things,

  112. the biggest displeasure that God has with his people,

  113. the precise details that we'll look at in a minute,

  114. the very heart of this is their pride.

  115. God is disgusted with the pride of his people.

  116. Open report card, page 1.

  117. It says that,

  118. I detest, I abhor your pride.

  119. I abhor it.

  120. I hate it.

  121. And notice who Amos is addressing here.

  122. Firstly, he's addressing the people of God.

  123. Right?

  124. The people who are supposed to be God's people,

  125. representing him,

  126. as we heard this morning,

  127. shining for him and displaying God's glory to the watching world.

  128. That people, God's anger,

  129. is against them.

  130. It's not just against any old nation.

  131. It's against God's people,

  132. which incidentally is why the lessons from this

  133. are so applicable to us this evening.

  134. This is God's people.

  135. Secondly, within that people,

  136. look halfway through verse 1.

  137. We saw Amos last week addressing,

  138. or two weeks ago,

  139. addressing the females in Israel.

  140. So the cows of Bashan,

  141. which I thought Ian so helpfully

  142. and delicately took us through.

  143. We're looking this week at the male of the species.

  144. Amos is speaking directly,

  145. did you notice it,

  146. to the notable men.

  147. So he's speaking to the men

  148. in the corridors of power,

  149. both in the north and in the south.

  150. The men at the top of society,

  151. the movers and shakers,

  152. the men of influence,

  153. the decision makers,

  154. the leaders of God's people.

  155. These are the people that Amos is speaking to.

  156. And these are the people in his sights

  157. as he delivers this stinging report card.

  158. God detests their pride.

  159. Hates it.

  160. And for that pride, says God,

  161. you are heading for destruction and exile.

  162. I think we see that emphasis

  163. come out so strongly

  164. in the way that Amos has shaped

  165. and structured this message in this chapter.

  166. Now, here's a question for you this evening.

  167. Put your hand up if you like a sandwich.

  168. Excellent.

  169. Peter, favourite sandwich?

  170. Take your time.

  171. Stuffing.

  172. Excellent.

  173. Cool.

  174. Anyone else?

  175. Favourite sandwich?

  176. Lawrence.

  177. Cheese and ham.

  178. Okay.

  179. Anyone else?

  180. One more.

  181. A BLT.

  182. Standard.

  183. Excellent.

  184. Here's the sandwich we're going to look at this evening.

  185. This is the Amos 6 sandwich.

  186. Very simple.

  187. Two bits of bread,

  188. two bits of cheese,

  189. and a bit of meat in the middle,

  190. which is the focus of

  191. and the substance of the sandwich.

  192. Amos 6 sandwich.

  193. You'll see it on your sheet.

  194. The mark of pride,

  195. number one.

  196. The mark of pride,

  197. number two.

  198. And the meat in the middle,

  199. which is the very focus of

  200. and the sharp end

  201. of what Amos is saying to God's people.

  202. God is disgusted

  203. with the pride of his people.

  204. Mark of pride,

  205. number one.

  206. His people's complacency.

  207. God hates his people's complacency.

  208. You'll see the first bit of this sandwich,

  209. verses 1 to 3,

  210. and verses 13 to 14.

  211. This is the bread of the Amos 6 sandwich.

  212. And what does he start?

  213. Verse 1, chapter 5,

  214. the word,

  215. woe.

  216. Now, I've had many a bad report card in my time,

  217. but none of them have started with woe.

  218. Started with a lot of other words,

  219. but not woe.

  220. This is shockingly surprising, isn't it?

  221. Woe.

  222. It is strong language.

  223. Who is this woe addressed to?

  224. It's to the capital cities.

  225. Capital city in the north,

  226. capital city in the south.

  227. To those who are at ease in Zion,

  228. so that's Jerusalem,

  229. and those who are secure in Samaria.

  230. These men at the top,

  231. whom the people of the land,

  232. they come to seek counsel and advice from,

  233. they are quite happy,

  234. quite happy with how things are going in the land.

  235. And that ease may suggest comfort to those leaders,

  236. but it reeks of complacency to God.

  237. Here's what they're doing.

  238. They're doing two things, okay?

  239. Firstly,

  240. they are looking at favorable comparisons.

  241. Now, you'll notice it.

  242. Johnny did excellently

  243. in reading the place names

  244. that are in here in these verses.

  245. Look at them with me, okay?

  246. The place names.

  247. Kalna,

  248. Hamath,

  249. and Gath.

  250. These are the nations that surround Israel.

  251. And we can understand that at this point in time,

  252. Israel are far better off

  253. than the nations surrounding them.

  254. And as the leaders of God's people,

  255. when they go compare.com,

  256. they come off very favorably.

  257. And it produces within them

  258. a sense of smugness

  259. as they compare themselves

  260. to the nations round about them.

  261. Now, look at verse 2.

  262. Commentators think that this,

  263. verse 2,

  264. is the propaganda of the day.

  265. So, when the people of the land,

  266. they come to the leaders

  267. with their problems

  268. and their cases of injustice,

  269. instead of dealing with them,

  270. the leaders simply fob them off

  271. by telling them

  272. that instead of complaining,

  273. what they really should do

  274. is be extremely thankful

  275. that they live in Israel

  276. and they don't live

  277. in one of the surrounding nations.

  278. Be so thankful

  279. that you live here

  280. and you don't live over there.

  281. This is what they're saying.

  282. And so, they're just fobbing them off.

  283. Now, to get your head around

  284. what this would look like,

  285. here's what I want you to picture.

  286. Imagine you write to David Cameron

  287. and you're appealing to him

  288. because your employer

  289. has tripled your contracted hours of work,

  290. is making you work without a break,

  291. and to sum it all up,

  292. he has halved your pay.

  293. So, you make your way to number 10

  294. and you meet David Cameron.

  295. He hears your complaint

  296. and he says to you,

  297. well, I could deal with your complaint.

  298. I could deal with it.

  299. But I put it to you

  300. that you should be thankful

  301. that you live in the United Kingdom

  302. where you have a job

  303. instead of living in a third world country

  304. where you don't have a job.

  305. So, here's what I suggest to you,

  306. that instead of coming to me with a complaint,

  307. just stop yourself next time

  308. and count your lucky stars

  309. that you live here

  310. and you don't live over there.

  311. Now, would you be satisfied

  312. that justice has been done

  313. in that situation?

  314. Of course you wouldn't.

  315. Of course you wouldn't.

  316. But that is exactly

  317. what is going on

  318. in the land of God's people

  319. at this precise moment.

  320. These leaders,

  321. these people at the top

  322. should not be at ease

  323. over how things are going.

  324. There's a distinct moral unjustness

  325. that is rife in the lands

  326. and they are being complacent

  327. in the way that they are leading

  328. this nation.

  329. And adding to that sense

  330. of complacency,

  331. secondly,

  332. they are exaggerating

  333. their achievements.

  334. Look at the bottom

  335. of the sandwich here.

  336. So, this is verses 13 and 14.

  337. The bottom bit of bread.

  338. So, this is,

  339. look at it with me,

  340. Lodabar and Karname.

  341. They are two place names.

  342. They are two places

  343. of recent military victories

  344. for Israel.

  345. And the fact that they are

  346. two recent military victories

  347. has led to God's people

  348. feeling super confident

  349. in their own abilities

  350. and strength.

  351. And what does Amos say?

  352. You foolish people.

  353. You foolish people.

  354. There's some irony

  355. going on here as well.

  356. These two towns,

  357. we can understand,

  358. they were not hard to conquer.

  359. They were not hard to conquer.

  360. Lodabar,

  361. the name literally means nothing.

  362. It means nothing.

  363. I mean,

  364. this is the equivalent

  365. of Scotland

  366. beating San Marino

  367. at football

  368. and thinking that we are

  369. world beaters

  370. off the back of it.

  371. Now, I say that

  372. knowing that sometimes

  373. we don't beat San Marino,

  374. but you get the point.

  375. Don't get ahead of yourself.

  376. That's Amos' point.

  377. Don't get ahead of yourself.

  378. That wasn't a difficult victory.

  379. And Karname,

  380. again,

  381. it's not a big place,

  382. but its name,

  383. it means horns.

  384. So,

  385. it's the symbol

  386. of power and authority.

  387. So,

  388. to conquer a land

  389. with horns

  390. on the emblem,

  391. it most likely

  392. fed Israel's pride.

  393. Both of these

  394. are hollow victories.

  395. They're not something

  396. to be boasting about.

  397. They're not something

  398. to be bragging about.

  399. And I think

  400. these favorable comparisons

  401. and this exaggerated

  402. sense of achievement

  403. has led to this

  404. sense of invincibility.

  405. And as they look

  406. to their army

  407. and as they look

  408. to their borders,

  409. they think they are

  410. invincible

  411. when the truth is

  412. they are anything but.

  413. They are

  414. a complacent

  415. people.

  416. They are a complacent

  417. people because

  418. they have taken

  419. their eye off the ball.

  420. They have taken

  421. their gaze

  422. away

  423. from God.

  424. They have fallen

  425. out of a right

  426. relationship with Him.

  427. and they have

  428. stopped judging

  429. things by how

  430. He views things

  431. and they have

  432. started judging

  433. things by their

  434. own standards

  435. and their own

  436. interpretation.

  437. They say things

  438. are fine.

  439. They are not.

  440. You are

  441. a complacent

  442. people,

  443. says God.

  444. And I guess

  445. we've got to ask

  446. ourselves,

  447. haven't we,

  448. as God's people,

  449. are we

  450. complacent?

  451. Would that be

  452. as we open

  453. our report card,

  454. would it say

  455. complacent?

  456. Are we

  457. settling

  458. for hearts

  459. that are

  460. at ease?

  461. Are we

  462. settling for

  463. a haphazard

  464. prayer life?

  465. Are we

  466. becoming

  467. casual

  468. in our

  469. treatment

  470. of God's

  471. words?

  472. Both

  473. indications,

  474. I think,

  475. that we are

  476. doing things

  477. in our own

  478. strength.

  479. Friends,

  480. have we become

  481. numb

  482. because of our

  483. comfortable lifestyles

  484. to the broken

  485. world in which

  486. we live?

  487. Are we

  488. being lulled

  489. into thinking

  490. that we are

  491. doing well

  492. at shining

  493. for Jesus

  494. because we

  495. are comparing

  496. ourselves

  497. to the world

  498. in which we

  499. live and we

  500. think we're

  501. just that

  502. little bit

  503. more moral

  504. than everyone

  505. else?

  506. Brothers and

  507. sisters,

  508. have we

  509. taken our

  510. eyes off

  511. of God

  512. and are we

  513. stopping

  514. judging things

  515. by his

  516. standards

  517. and are we

  518. judging things

  519. by our

  520. own?

  521. You know,

  522. it was Jim

  523. Elliott who

  524. said,

  525. forgive me

  526. for being

  527. so ordinary

  528. while claiming

  529. to know

  530. so extraordinary

  531. a God.

  532. And so what

  533. does Amos say

  534. to this

  535. complacent

  536. generation

  537. of God's

  538. people?

  539. Look at

  540. verse 3.

  541. You put

  542. off the

  543. day of

  544. disaster

  545. and bring

  546. near a

  547. rain of

  548. terror.

  549. I mean,

  550. I know it

  551. was Halloween

  552. the other

  553. night,

  554. but these

  555. are scary,

  556. scary words,

  557. aren't they?

  558. Mark of

  559. pride number

  560. one,

  561. their

  562. complacency.

  563. Mark of

  564. pride number

  565. two,

  566. their

  567. carelessness.

  568. God

  569. detests his

  570. people's

  571. carelessness.

  572. And you'll

  573. see this

  574. next layer

  575. of the

  576. Amos 6

  577. sandwich.

  578. Okay,

  579. we're into

  580. the cheese

  581. section now.

  582. Verses 4

  583. to 7

  584. and verse

  585. 12.

  586. Now,

  587. why might

  588. you be

  589. asking?

  590. Why are

  591. they

  592. careless?

  593. Well,

  594. to be blunt,

  595. friends,

  596. they really

  597. couldn't care

  598. less about

  599. what's going

  600. on in

  601. their land.

  602. These

  603. notable

  604. men could

  605. not care

  606. less about

  607. the people

  608. underneath

  609. them in

  610. the pecking

  611. order of

  612. society,

  613. and they

  614. couldn't

  615. care more

  616. about

  617. prospering

  618. themselves.

  619. Look at

  620. verses 4

  621. to 7.

  622. Amos gives

  623. us such

  624. a flavour

  625. of the

  626. reality of

  627. what's going

  628. on in

  629. the land

  630. here.

  631. It's a

  632. picture of

  633. affluence,

  634. it's a

  635. picture of

  636. indulgence

  637. and luxury.

  638. All round

  639. about them

  640. there is

  641. poverty and

  642. ruin amongst

  643. God's

  644. people.

  645. Look at

  646. the words

  647. that Amos

  648. uses here.

  649. Look at

  650. this description.

  651. What's he

  652. saying here?

  653. This is

  654. what's going

  655. on in

  656. the land.

  657. Beds

  658. of ivory,

  659. lounging

  660. on couches,

  661. dining on

  662. choice lambs

  663. and fattened

  664. calves,

  665. drinking wine

  666. by the

  667. bowl full,

  668. strumming on

  669. instruments,

  670. I don't think

  671. that's anything

  672. against the

  673. harp there,

  674. using the

  675. finest lotions,

  676. bathing

  677. themselves.

  678. Do you get

  679. the picture

  680. here?

  681. Do you

  682. see what

  683. he's trying

  684. to tell

  685. us?

  686. That this

  687. stuff that's

  688. going on,

  689. God's not

  690. blind to

  691. it, God

  692. sees it,

  693. God sees

  694. how they're

  695. behaving, and

  696. he hates

  697. it.

  698. He hates

  699. their

  700. carelessness.

  701. And you'll

  702. notice two

  703. biblical

  704. characters that

  705. Amos uses

  706. there in

  707. those verses.

  708. I think they

  709. add to that

  710. sense of

  711. rebuke.

  712. Firstly, you

  713. get David

  714. in there,

  715. and I think

  716. Amos is

  717. saying, and

  718. it's a

  719. massive lesson

  720. for God's

  721. people, that

  722. just because

  723. you act like

  724. David,

  725. David, doesn't

  726. mean you've

  727. got a heart

  728. like David,

  729. and also we

  730. get Joseph in

  731. there as

  732. well.

  733. What's he

  734. doing in

  735. there?

  736. Well, we

  737. studied him, I

  738. wonder if you

  739. remember, a few

  740. months ago.

  741. We did a

  742. series in

  743. Genesis looking

  744. at his life,

  745. and you may

  746. remember that

  747. episode in

  748. Genesis 37,

  749. where his

  750. brothers, filled

  751. with jealousy,

  752. they throw him

  753. into the depths

  754. of the pit and

  755. leave him there

  756. for events to

  757. take their

  758. course.

  759. They literally

  760. just leave him

  761. for death.

  762. And then a few

  763. chapters later

  764. on in Genesis

  765. 42, the

  766. brothers are

  767. looking back on

  768. this incident,

  769. they're looking

  770. back on this

  771. incident, but

  772. Joseph now is

  773. in the place of

  774. power in Pharaoh's

  775. courts.

  776. And they say

  777. this in Genesis

  778. 42, looking back

  779. on that, they

  780. confess to one

  781. another.

  782. This is what

  783. they say.

  784. We saw how

  785. distressed he

  786. was.

  787. So that's

  788. Joseph.

  789. We saw how

  790. distressed he

  791. was when he

  792. pleaded for his

  793. life, but we

  794. would not

  795. listen.

  796. We saw his

  797. cries and we

  798. did nothing.

  799. We heard the

  800. cries, we saw

  801. it, we turned a

  802. blind eye to it

  803. and we did

  804. nothing.

  805. And it's almost

  806. as if Amos is

  807. saying to this

  808. generation of

  809. God's people,

  810. you are at it

  811. again.

  812. You're doing it

  813. again.

  814. You turn a

  815. blind eye to

  816. injustice.

  817. You ignore it

  818. as if it wasn't

  819. there.

  820. This is happening

  821. right under your

  822. noses.

  823. You know about

  824. this stuff and

  825. you're doing

  826. nothing to stop

  827. it.

  828. As leaders of

  829. God's people,

  830. you're supposed

  831. to be those who

  832. love God.

  833. You love God

  834. and you love

  835. and you serve

  836. his people and

  837. you are doing

  838. anything but.

  839. And that

  840. mismatch behavior

  841. isn't right,

  842. it isn't right

  843. morally and it

  844. isn't glorifying

  845. to the God who

  846. you claim to

  847. represent.

  848. You're not

  849. shining for him.

  850. And as if to

  851. drive home the

  852. point, we get the

  853. second part of that

  854. sandwich at verse

  855. 12.

  856. And the big idea

  857. that Amos is

  858. painting for them

  859. here is this idea

  860. of mismatches.

  861. So this is things

  862. that everybody knows

  863. don't go together.

  864. So look what he

  865. does.

  866. What does he say?

  867. Would you take

  868. your horse out of

  869. the paddock and

  870. instead of taking

  871. it to a lush green

  872. field for a run

  873. around, would you

  874. take it to the

  875. rocks to run

  876. around?

  877. Of course you

  878. wouldn't.

  879. Of course you

  880. wouldn't.

  881. Would you take

  882. your oxen out to

  883. plow and instead

  884. of going to the

  885. lush soil of the

  886. farm to plow,

  887. would you go to

  888. the sea to

  889. plow?

  890. Of course you

  891. wouldn't.

  892. Everybody knows

  893. those things do

  894. not go together.

  895. It does not take a

  896. genius to work

  897. that out.

  898. And so follow the

  899. logic.

  900. What does he say

  901. next?

  902. Would you expect

  903. life-giving justice

  904. to produce poison?

  905. Would you expect a

  906. healthy tree to

  907. produce bitter fruit?

  908. Of course you

  909. wouldn't.

  910. Of course you

  911. wouldn't.

  912. And yet, and

  913. yet, that is

  914. precisely what is

  915. going on in your

  916. land.

  917. Precisely what's

  918. going on.

  919. Now if you've got

  920. an ESV there,

  921. you'll notice it

  922. verse 12.

  923. Instead of

  924. bitterness, it

  925. uses the word,

  926. Amos uses the

  927. word wormwood.

  928. I find that

  929. quite a helpful

  930. image in

  931. understanding what's

  932. going on.

  933. I wonder if you've

  934. had that experience

  935. in your life where

  936. you've gone to pick

  937. up an old table or

  938. an old chair that

  939. was sitting in the

  940. attic for years and

  941. years and years,

  942. and as you lift it

  943. up, it just falls to

  944. pieces beneath you.

  945. Have you had that

  946. experience before?

  947. I've had that

  948. experience before.

  949. It is rotten to the

  950. core.

  951. It is eaten by

  952. woodworm.

  953. And it gives you

  954. the impression that

  955. it is healthy and

  956. stable, while all the

  957. time it is rotten to

  958. the core.

  959. And that's what's

  960. going on here.

  961. Here is a people at

  962. face value are giving

  963. the impression that

  964. they are healthy and

  965. stable.

  966. Reality is there's

  967. nothing going on.

  968. They are rotten.

  969. You are a careless

  970. people.

  971. What does Amos say to

  972. this careless generation

  973. of God's people?

  974. By the way, you'll

  975. notice that where it

  976. says, those who

  977. strive to put

  978. themselves first.

  979. You'll notice that

  980. idea of first as you

  981. read this through.

  982. They put themselves,

  983. they are the first

  984. nation in their eyes.

  985. The leaders place

  986. themselves first in

  987. this nation.

  988. They eat and anoint

  989. themselves with the

  990. finest or the first of

  991. meats and oils.

  992. What does Amos say?

  993. Verse 8.

  994. Therefore, you will be

  995. among the first to go

  996. into exile.

  997. Your feasting and

  998. lounging will be at an

  999. end.

  1000. God detests his

  1001. people's carelessness.

  1002. He hates it.

  1003. And it's a real, real

  1004. challenge to us.

  1005. Friends, would God on

  1006. our report cards, would

  1007. he write careless?

1008. Are we those who are

  1009. living mismatched lives?

1010. Are we people who say

1011. one thing, claim to be

1012. living for one thing, and

  1013. are doing something

  1014. completely else?

  1015. Are we giving the

  1016. impression of health and

1017. life, but the truth of

1018. it is, on the inside,

  1019. there's absolutely nothing

  1020. going on?

1021. Now just think about your

  1022. own personal walk with

1023. the Lord for just a

  1024. second.

1025. are you good at putting on

  1026. the front in here?

  1027. Are you, have you

  1028. mastered the church

  1029. lingo?

1030. Do you know the right

  1031. times to say amen?

1032. But actually the reality is

1033. that the fire, the inward

  1034. affection and love for

1035. Jesus has long gone out.

1036. Friends, do we care about

  1037. justice?

  1038. Do we care about

  1039. injustice?

1040. Or have we got so good?

1041. Have we mastered the art

1042. of turning a blind eye to

  1043. it, and are simply

  1044. fattening ourselves and

  1045. growing callous?

  1046. You know, Neil mentioned

  1047. it earlier, are we

  1048. unconcerned?

1049. Are we concerned about the

1050. plight of our brothers and

  1051. sisters around the world

  1052. who are facing persecution

  1053. for standing for Jesus

  1054. Christ?

1055. Does that even concern us?

1056. Can I encourage you to come

1057. to the prayer meeting on

  1058. Wednesday, where we'll be

  1059. praying for the

  1060. persecuted church?

  1061. It's just a great way of

  1062. remembering them in our

  1063. prayers.

  1064. God detests his people's

  1065. carelessness.

1066. And now we come to our

1067. favorite bit, the meat of

  1068. the sandwich.

1069. This is the meat of the

  1070. sandwich here.

1071. This is the sharp end of

1072. what God is saying to his

  1073. people through Amos.

1074. You'll see it in verses

  1075. 8 to 11.

1076. And the big idea here is

  1077. that God detests his

  1078. people's pride.

  1079. He hates his people's

  1080. pride.

1081. What's going to happen to

  1082. this people?

  1083. That's the question.

1084. What's going to happen to

  1085. them?

1086. Well, says Amos, you are

  1087. headed for exile and

  1088. destruction.

1089. And he describes for them

  1090. what that destruction is

1091. going to look like as we

  1092. get this quite shocking

  1093. picture at verse 9.

  1094. Look at it there.

  1095. Verse 9, it is a shocking

  1096. picture.

  1097. And I think it's a picture

1098. of the aftermath of a

  1099. slaughtering battle.

  1100. And there's a relative

  1101. hunting for survivors

  1102. amongst the rubble,

  1103. looking for bodies to

  1104. take away and burn.

1105. And what he does, he

  1106. calls into the rubble.

  1107. He calls, is anyone

  1108. there?

  1109. Is anyone there?

1110. And a voice shouts back,

  1111. I am here.

  1112. I'm here.

  1113. But whatever you do,

  1114. whatever you do, just

  1115. don't mention God's name.

  1116. Just don't mention God's

  1117. name.

1118. Now, why is he saying

  1119. that?

1120. Well, I think the idea is

  1121. that this people have

  1122. experienced God's

  1123. judgment.

  1124. And this is the

  1125. confession of a people

  1126. who have taken God

  1127. lightly.

1128. They have not listened to

  1129. his words, and they've

  1130. experienced the

  1131. consequences of that.

  1132. Now, why?

  1133. What does God have

  1134. against his people?

  1135. Well, God is disgusted

1136. with the pride of his

  1137. people.

  1138. Their self-sufficiency,

  1139. they don't think they

  1140. need him.

  1141. Their self-assurance,

1142. it's that they can go

  1143. alone.

  1144. That they think they

  1145. have all the resources

  1146. at their disposal.

  1147. Their self-enhancement,

  1148. their false sense of

  1149. security, the fact that

  1150. they only care about

  1151. themselves.

  1152. That's what's going on

  1153. here on the surface.

1154. But I think we need to

1155. work a little bit harder

  1156. than that.

  1157. Because lying behind this

  1158. pride,

  1159. lying, I mean,

  1160. pride is just a

  1161. manifestation of it,

  1162. right?

  1163. Lying behind this

1164. pride is a people who

1165. have lost sight of who

  1166. God really is.

  1167. Because right at this

1168. root, right at the root

  1169. of this pride,

  1170. standing right behind it,

  1171. this is a worship

  1172. problem.

  1173. This is a worship

  1174. problem.

  1175. They've ceased to

  1176. worship God as he

1177. truly is, how God has

  1178. revealed himself to be,

  1179. and instead they are

1180. bowing at the altars of

1181. the God of their own

  1182. imagination and

  1183. preferences.

  1184. So you can think

  1185. about it this way,

1186. in the life of this

  1187. nation, God's people

1188. at the time, God has

1189. gone from being in the

  1190. driver's seat to being

1191. but a speck in the

  1192. rear view mirror.

  1193. They've just forgotten

  1194. about him.

  1195. And God reminds them

1196. here of who he really

  1197. is.

  1198. Notice the names that

  1199. God uses for himself

  1200. at verses 8 to 11.

  1201. The sovereign Lord,

  1202. verse 8,

  1203. the Lord God

  1204. Almighty,

  1205. verses 8 and 14.

  1206. He is the holy

  1207. God.

  1208. He is the awesome

  1209. God.

  1210. He is the all-powerful

  1211. God.

  1212. He is the redeeming

  1213. and loving God.

1214. He is the God who

  1215. controls the entirety

1216. of the world which he

  1217. made.

  1218. All people,

  1219. all people,

  1220. including God's

  1221. people,

  1222. answer to him.

1223. So do you see what

  1224. God is doing here?

  1225. He's committing the

1226. totality of who he is

1227. to doing what he says

1228. he is going to do.

1229. Let me ask you this

  1230. evening, let's pause

1231. just for a second and

  1232. ask ourselves this

  1233. because it is so

  1234. important.

1235. Friends, do you have a

  1236. worship problem?

1237. Have you lost sight of

  1238. who God really is?

  1239. Have you just lost

  1240. sight of it?

  1241. And instead, are you

  1242. making God into a

  1243. figment of your own

  1244. imagination and being?

1245. Is God who he says he

1246. is or is God who you

  1247. say he is?

  1248. You see, lying behind

  1249. this people, the core

  1250. of the people's

  1251. problem here is that

  1252. they have failed and

1253. they are ceasing to see

1254. God as he really is.

  1255. It's a worship problem.

  1256. I'm always reminded of

1257. the words of Lucy from

1258. The Lion and the Witch

  1259. and the Wardrobe, if

  1260. you remember that.

  1261. She's speaking about

  1262. Aslan.

1263. And what does she say?

1264. He is not a tame

1265. lion, but he is good.

1266. He is not a tame

1267. lion, but he is good.

  1268. God's people are headed

  1269. for exile and

  1270. destruction.

  1271. And of course, we've

  1272. got the privilege of

  1273. having history on our

  1274. side.

1275. We know that 40 years

  1276. or so later, the

  1277. Assyrians are going to

  1278. come marching into town

  1279. and destroy Israel.

1280. And if what we know

  1281. about the Assyrians is

  1282. true, they're not the

  1283. most humane of people

  1284. when it comes to

  1285. conquering a nation.

  1286. And Judah, of course,

  1287. the little brother of

  1288. the north and the

  1289. south.

  1290. Judah, they're not far

  1291. behind.

  1292. God is disgusted with

  1293. the pride of his

  1294. people.

  1295. Now, this Amos 6

  1296. sandwich, it's been a

  1297. hard chew, hasn't it?

  1298. It's been a hard

  1299. chew.

  1300. But here is the

  1301. aftertaste that I

1302. wanted for us to be on

  1303. our tongues as we

  1304. leave this evening.

  1305. Because believe it or

  1306. not, there are two

  1307. great encouragements.

  1308. I know, honestly, there

  1309. are encouragements in

  1310. this passage.

  1311. Two great encouragements

1312. for us in Amos chapter

    Amos 6 chapter mention

  1313. 6.

  1314. Firstly, what comes so

  1315. clearly across in this

  1316. chapter, and indeed

  1317. throughout the whole

  1318. Bible, Old and New

  1319. Testament, is that God

  1320. detests pride.

  1321. He hates it.

  1322. God opposes the

  1323. proud.

1324. But praise God that he

  1325. gives grace to the

  1326. humble.

  1327. James chapter 4 would

    James 4 chapter mention

  1328. tell us that wonderful

  1329. truth, that he gives

  1330. grace.

1331. We need to see that God

  1332. warning his people of

  1333. their pride, him

1334. pointing it out, is a

1335. mark of his loving and

  1336. great grace.

  1337. It's grace.

1338. And that gracious hand of

  1339. God is still outstretched

  1340. today through his son,

1341. Jesus Christ, the man who

  1342. John describes in his

  1343. prologue, John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

1344. as being full of grace and

  1345. truth.

  1346. Encouragement number one,

  1347. friends, that God gives

  1348. grace to the humble.

  1349. And the second great

  1350. encouragement that I think

1351. we can take from this,

1352. Amos here is addressing a

  1353. generation of God's people,

  1354. and specifically addressing

  1355. a generation of corrupt

  1356. leaders of God's people.

  1357. Complacent leaders,

  1358. careless leaders, leaders

1359. who couldn't care less about

1360. the affairs of their people,

  1361. leaders who are self-serving,

  1362. who are quite literally

  1363. leading their people into

  1364. death and destruction.

1365. And I think most importantly,

1366. they are leading this people,

1367. their people, away from the

  1368. presence of God.

  1369. Well, praise God.

1370. Praise God, friends, that the

1371. true and perfect leader of

  1372. God's people, Jesus Christ,

1373. came as one who was fully

1374. obedient to God, who was fully

  1375. dedicated to his people,

1376. and who fully gave it all to

  1377. save them.

1378. For Jesus came not into riches

1379. and palaces, but into poverty,

1380. with nowhere to lay his head.

1381. He left his throne room.

  1382. He humbled himself.

1383. And he took our poverty.

  1384. He took it.

1385. So that we, through him,

  1386. might become rich.

1387. Jesus came not eating and

1388. dining with the high and

  1389. mighty, but associating himself

1390. with the meek and lowly.

1391. He came not wearing the

  1392. sweetest smelling aromas of

1393. finest perfumes, but he was

1394. born into the stench of a

  1395. stable.

1396. And Jesus is the true leader of

  1397. God's, true leader of God's

  1398. people, through whose costly

1399. sacrifice on the cross took

1400. God's disgust and judgment that

  1401. we deserved.

1402. He took it on himself.

1403. And his self-giving for his

1404. people has opened the way back

1405. up for us to come to the

  1406. Father.

1407. Do you see what's going on

  1408. here?

  1409. This is beautiful stuff.

1410. These leaders of God's people

1411. are leading their people away

1412. from the presence of God.

1413. Jesus leads his people straight

1414. into the very presence of God.

1415. The contrast couldn't be any

  1416. greater between these two

  1417. leaders of God's people.

1418. Friends, let me ask you this

  1419. evening.

1420. What leader are you trusting

  1421. in this evening?

1422. Are you like Israel in Amos 6?

1423. Are you trusting in yourself?

1424. Do you rate your own

  1425. achievements and capabilities?

1426. Or are you trusting in Jesus,

1427. the true and perfect leader of

  1428. God's people?

1429. If that's you this evening, if

1430. that's where you are, then this

1431. is a great cause for rejoicing.

1432. That we have been saved from

  1433. death and destruction.

1434. And we are now found in the

1435. true and perfect leader of

  1436. God's people.

1437. And what does he tell us to do

  1438. as his followers?

1439. To live now for his kingdom.

1440. The kingdom that he will bring

1441. when he returns in glory, where

1442. all social injustice will be

  1443. abolished, all oppression

1444. ceased, and where he will rule

1445. his people in grace and truth

1446. in the very presence of God.

1447. And what does he tell us to

  1448. pray and to do?

1449. That it would be done on earth

1450. as it is in heaven.

1451. You see, there's that wonderful

1452. cause for rejoicing this evening

1453. that we are found in the

1454. perfect leader of God's people,

  1455. Jesus.

  1456. What a great thing.

1457. But as we close, let me just

1458. take you back to school for a

  1459. minute.

1460. When it comes to the report

1461. card of our lives, friends,

1462. let's be honest with one another,

1463. none of us are getting straight A's,

  1464. are we?

1465. I mean, not even close to that.

1466. None of us are perfect.

1467. But the gospel tells us that

1468. Jesus has taken our blotted

  1469. report card.

1470. The report card of our lives that

  1471. justifiably read guilty and

  1472. excluded and dead.

1473. And he's given us his unblemished

  1474. perfect one.

1475. And so we don't come in fear and

  1476. unbelief before God.

1477. We come before him with confidence

1478. and assurance in Jesus Christ that

1479. we are acceptable to him and

1480. praise God that we can call him

  1481. father.

1482. That is what God has done for us in

  1483. the gospel.

1484. He's taken spiritually dead people

1485. and he's made them alive.

1486. He has turned enemies, his enemies,

  1487. into his friends.

1488. And he's turned orphans into sons and

1489. daughters of the living God.

1490. What a great and wonderful God that we

  1491. serve.

  1492. Why don't we pray?

1493. And I'm just going to allow just a

  1494. few minutes,

1495. maybe just 30 seconds actually,

  1496. let's just respond

1497. to what God has been saying to us

1498. through his word this evening.

  1499. God with you.

1500. Let me just read you one of the verses

1501. of one of my favorite hymns called Here is Love.

1502. Let me all thy love accepting,

1503. love thee ever all my days.

1504. Let me seek thy kingdom only

1505. and my life be to thy praise.

1506. Thou alone shalt be my glory,

1507. nothing in the world I see.

1508. Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me.

1509. Thou thyself hast set me free.

1510. So Father God, we thank you so much for Jesus.

1511. We praise you, Lord, for the gospel.

1512. We praise you for our great leader,

  1513. Captain, King, and Savior,

1514. who has saved us, rescued us from death,

1515. and transported us into your wonderful family.

1516. Help us, Lord, this week as we live our lives in this world

1517. to seek your kingdom above all.

1518. Lord, help us to be people who don't live for ourselves,

1519. but live for your glory.

1520. And this is our prayer in and through Jesus' wonderful name.

  1521. Amen.
