  1. Well, good evening. I just want to read the first three verses of that again, but this time in the NIV.

  2. It's a very, as we saw, it's a great picture, Amos chapter 8.

    Amos 8 chapter mention

  3. And these two translations, the ESV and the NIV, get different bits more helpfully than others.

  4. So let me just read the first three verses and then I'll pray and then we'll have a look at it together.

  5. This is what the sovereign Lord showed me, a basket of ripe fruit.

  6. What do you see, Amos? He asked, a basket of ripe fruit.

  7. I answered, then the Lord said to me, the time is ripe for my people Israel.

  8. I will spare them no longer.

  9. And that day, declares the sovereign Lord, the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.

  10. Many, many bodies flung everywhere.

  11. Silence.

  12. Father God, we come here tonight, the end of a busy weekend, at the end of a busy day.

  13. Father, with Monday crouching at the door, so many things that we could think about in this time.

  14. But Lord, we pray you would send your spirit, that our minds would focus on what you're saying, that our ears would be open to your voice.

  15. That our hearts would be soft.

  16. Father, that we would benefit from this time.

  17. And that we would see the real treasure trove of your word.

  18. And that we might hear you.

  19. And leave here loving Jesus more.

  20. Father, help us.

  21. We pray it in Jesus' name.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. So we're in Amos chapter 8.

    Amos 8 chapter mention

  25. It's our penultimate sermon in Amos.

  26. Some of you will be mortified by that.

  27. Some of you will be absolutely delighted.

  28. For me, it's been a real joy.

  29. I think we've started to see an area of the Bible that we seldom go into.

  30. And my hope is that Amos will be a friend.

  31. A friend who tells us hard truths about what life is like and what we need to be.

  32. That he may go back on the shelf for a while.

  33. But we'll have learned lots about him and understood his message perhaps a little bit more.

  34. So next time he comes up in our personal devotions or in years to come where he's a sermon series,

  35. we might be reacquainted with him and learn to love him more.

  36. And it's been a very difficult book, if we're honest.

  37. It's not been happy stuff.

  38. It's been predominantly dark.

  39. But don't worry.

  40. Because Neil's going to make it all better next week.

  41. So tonight the big message is when the room runs out,

  42. when the room for repentance runs out.

  43. And Amos has been dark.

  44. It's been very, very dark.

  45. It just seems like week after week on a dark winter's evening,

  46. we've been trawling through judgment after judgment after judgment.

  47. And there's been very little good news.

  48. That really Israel is in God's crosshairs.

  49. And it's been pretty mortifying to those that heard Amos the first time.

  50. And pretty mortifying to us as we've gone through it again and again and again.

  51. It's very easy, isn't it, as we've read it, to think,

  52. well, Israel, why don't you just wake up?

  53. Why don't you change your ways?

  54. We can spend so long looking at them and what they've done wrong

  55. and completely miss what God's been saying to us through this book.

  56. Got to be very careful of deflection, of looking down on them

  57. and missing what's going on in our own lives as far as this is going.

  58. It's very easy, isn't it, to see the speck in Israel's eye

  59. and totally miss the plank that is totally obscuring our vision

  60. of what's really going on.

  61. And it's been quite repetitive.

  62. I'm sure we've got that.

  63. Amos has been hitting the same things over and over again.

  64. One day I'll remember my water.

  65. It's been hitting exactly the same things,

  66. that there's almost been a tediousness about it.

  67. But just think how Amos feels.

  68. He's been bringing the same stuff to the same people

  69. day in, day out, week in, week out.

  70. We come to chapter 8 and nothing's really changed.

  71. He's preached a load of times to a load of people

  72. and nothing's really altered.

  73. Amos, as I'm sure we know, is from the south.

  74. He's from Judah.

  75. He comes from Tekoa.

  76. That's just down near Bethlehem.

  77. He's a mixed farmer who keeps both sheep.

  78. We learn in chapter 1, verse 1.

  79. And last week we learned that he also does sycamore fig trees.

  80. He grows and looks after them.

  81. And he comes to Israel during a time of great affluence.

  82. Things are going great.

  83. It's boom time in Israel.

  84. Victories won.

  85. Territory gained.

  86. Bollinger flowing.

  87. Caviar heaped high on the Bellinis.

  88. This is a really good time in Israel.

  89. And Amos is sent by God.

  90. And he comes and he bursts their bubble.

  91. Though prosperous on the outside, he says,

  92. they are rotten on the inside.

  93. The upper class are swinging from the chandeliers,

  94. but the lower class are dying in the gutter.

  95. It's a picture of exploitation.

  96. It's a picture of utter chaos.

  97. And the fabric of society is completely disintegrating around them.

  98. And Amos comes speaking the roars of God in judgment

  99. to his fickle and faithless people.

  100. And we saw in week one, and we tried to repeat it,

  101. that there's a combination code to Amos.

  102. Can anyone tell me what the combination code is?

  103. Good, Graham, you can stay another week.

  104. The rest of you, we'll see.

  105. 8351.

  106. And it stands for eight oracles of judgment.

  107. That was week one.

  108. Where we had six for the surrounding nations,

  109. one for Judah,

  110. and then Israel has been the target from then on.

  111. The six nations are done for war crimes.

  112. Judah is done for having the law,

  113. but disobeying it.

  114. And Israel is done for two major sins,

  115. social injustice and hypocritical worship.

  116. We then had three sermons of rebuke.

  117. That was Mike Fernandez giving us Amos 3,

  118. where it was very bleak,

  119. but there was the hope of a remnant,

  120. like the hind legs of a deer being rescued from a lion.

  121. Then we had Ian take us through Amos chapter 4,

    Amos 4 chapter mention

  122. and again there was a little sprinkling of hope in there.

  123. And then in chapter 5,

  124. Amos is almost conducting Israel's funeral,

  125. as they look to the future of this unrepentant people.

  126. Then Graham helped us and did the second of the woes,

  127. which comes at the end of those sermons of rebuke,

  128. and then we have five visions of judgment.

  129. That was John Shearer last week.

  130. He gave us the first three.

  131. And so today we come to the fourth vision of judgment.

  132. The fourth vision of judgment,

  133. and it's going to take up the whole of chapter 8.

  134. And then Neil next week will give us

  135. the last of the visions of judgment,

  136. and then what we've all been waiting for,

  137. ever since the introduction of Sermon 1 in chapter 1,

  138. this wonderful oracle of salvation,

  139. which is this beautiful building in the midst of a very dark

  140. and dangerous town called Amos.

  141. And so, we're ready to begin.

  142. I love a legal drama.

  143. I'm a big fan.

  144. I love The Good Wife.

  145. I'm a fan of suits.

  146. I really like law and order.

  147. I love all things to do with legal things.

  148. I think if pastoral ministry doesn't work out,

  149. I try and be some kind of legal secretary or something.

  150. I love the films,

  151. A Few Good Men,

  152. and The Firm with a very young Tom Cruise.

  153. And I enjoyed Aaron Brockovich,

  154. and The Pelican Brief.

  155. I even enjoyed Legally Blonde 1 and 2.

  156. I love novels with a legal theme.

  157. I'm a massive fan of To Kill a Mockingbird.

  158. Although I haven't got round to reading the second one yet.

  159. Has anyone read it?

  160. Set a Watchman, the sequel?

  161. Has anyone read it?

  162. No?

  163. Perhaps we could all read it together.

  164. I like The Count of Monte Cristo.

  165. I even quite enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities.

  166. I did a university dissertation on crime and punishment by Dostoevsky.

  167. My favourite Shakespeare is The Merchant of Venice,

  168. which is very legal.

  169. I like legal things.

  170. And what I like about them is the whole genre is about parry and riposte.

  171. Prosecution versus defence.

  172. That kind of backward and forward arm wrestle,

  173. as they try to outmaneuver each other,

  174. as they try to get one up.

  175. And in the midst of this,

  176. there's plea bargaining and suing and counter-suing

  177. and class actions and settlements

  178. and pre-trial hearings.

  179. I bet it's not really like that.

  180. That's just how I imagine it.

  181. But it's all against the clock.

  182. Because when the time runs out,

  183. you get these immortal words,

  184. we're going to trial.

  185. We're going to trial.

  186. The time's run out.

  187. It's time that we're going to meet in a courtroom

  188. and we're going to put this right once and for all.

  189. Chapter 8 of Amos is kind of like that moment.

  190. That moment's been reached.

  191. That God looks at his people and says,

  192. we're going to trial.

  193. I've given you seven chapters of repeated warnings

  194. in order to try and shock you into repentance.

  195. But you've not listened.

  196. So the date is set.

  197. The subpoena is issued.

  198. The summons is in the post.

  199. And so chapter 8 marks the turning point in Amos.

    Amos 1 chapter mention

  200. Chapters 1 to 7 have seen a succession of charges,

  201. accusations and evidence presented

  202. to try and get Israel to change their ways.

  203. But in chapter 8, God says the clock's run out.

  204. This is going on.

  205. It's time to get our wigs on.

  206. It's time to get a jury.

  207. It's trying to get that little hammer thing.

  208. This is court in session.

  209. Israel will be defending themselves.

  210. But their case is shot through from the start.

  211. And so Israel's trial arrives with certainty.

  212. God summons Israel to appear in his court.

  213. And he does it in the most bizarre way

  214. with the most bizarre vision.

  215. God shows Amos a basket of ripe fruit

  216. or literally a basket of summer fruits.

  217. And you might think that's a good thing.

  218. Oh, it must be so refreshing.

  219. Oh, it must be time for Wimbledon

  220. if we're getting the summer fruits out.

  221. That's not what's going on here.

  222. But,

  223. this is a very clear and present warning to Israel.

  224. The agricultural calendar of Israel

  225. runs September to August.

  226. And it's full.

  227. It's not like here where we have some times called winter

  228. where the ground's too hard to plant anything.

  229. They have a very rigorous agricultural cycle.

  230. It starts in September and November

  231. where you harvest olive oil and olives.

  232. In November and December,

  233. you sow wheat and barley.

  234. In January and March,

  235. you're planting and harvesting chickpeas,

  236. melons and cucumbers.

  237. In April,

  238. you pull the flax to make rope and other things.

  239. In April,

  240. you harvest the barley that you planted.

  241. In June,

  242. you harvest the wheat you planted.

  243. In June and July,

  244. you prune back your vines

  245. because it's grape time.

  246. And in August,

  247. at the end of the year,

  248. you have summer fruits.

  249. Figs and pomegranates and berries.

  250. And so when God says,

  251. what do you see?

  252. And Amos says,

  253. I see a basket of summer fruit.

  254. No one's in any doubt what that means.

  255. It means the season's over.

  256. It means the period's finished.

  257. He had all this time to repent

  258. and now it's over.

  259. We've come to the end of the cycle.

  260. We've come to the end of the line.

  261. The space for grace,

  262. the room for repentance,

  263. the terminus of time has arrived.

  264. There's also,

  265. and again,

  266. I take the commentators for this.

  267. There's also a wordplay going on.

  268. The word for summer fruits

  269. is the word quiet

  270. and the word for end is quick.

  271. But I think in the northern

  272. territory of Israel,

  273. they shorten vowels

  274. so it kind of sounds like quick and quick.

  275. So the fact that they see

  276. a basket of summer fruits,

  277. a basket of the end

  278. is really what's going on.

  279. I think the NIV gets the closest with,

  280. I saw a basket of ripe fruit

  281. and Israel is ripe for repentance.

  282. That seems to me to be quite alarming to a people.

  283. What do you see about our judgment?

  284. Well, it's like the end,

  285. a big basket of the end coming.

  286. I guess it's a bit like James 5.5.

  287. You have fattened yourself

  288. for the day of slaughter.

  289. You are ripe.

  290. You're full of iniquity

  291. and it's time to be judged.

  292. You're at the zenith of your rebellion.

  293. You've been caught red-handed

  294. and you must be judged.

  295. And so this is not a nice vision.

  296. This is a vision of the room

  297. for repentance running out.

  298. And so at the end of verse 2,

  299. God says,

  300. I will not pass by them.

  301. I will spare them no longer.

  302. I will never again pass by them.

  303. And this would send shockwaves

  304. if you were an Israelite

  305. because you're looking back to a time.

  306. You're looking back to a time of Passover

  307. where God definitively did pass by.

  308. That on the eve of the Exodus,

  309. God was coming to Egypt to judge Egypt.

  310. And the only safe place to be

  311. would to be found in the shelter

  312. and security that God offered

  313. sheltering under the blood

  314. of a firstborn lamb.

  315. And so when God judged,

  316. his people were safe,

  317. but now his people are told,

  318. I won't pass by.

  319. There's no means of escape.

  320. The space for grace,

  321. the room for repentance

  322. has run out.

  323. There's no shelter,

  324. no refuge,

  325. no sanctuary.

  326. God is coming.

  327. And he's coming to judge.

  328. Terrifying vision.

  329. The future is not bright.

  330. It is very bleak

  331. and it's not orange.

  332. It is crimson red.

  333. And these summer fruits

  334. would be particularly associated

  335. with Sokot,

  336. the feast of tabernacles.

  337. The time at the end

  338. of that agricultural calendar

  339. where everyone would gather

  340. in the temple,

  341. bring their produce

  342. and celebrate for seven days

  343. God's goodness to them.

  344. They would joyfully remember

  345. the fact that they'd had a harvest

  346. and that they would pray

  347. and rejoice expectantly

  348. at God's faithfulness

  349. that next year

  350. there would be another harvest.

  351. So here in verse three,

  352. when they're gathered

  353. in the temple,

  354. normally to sing

  355. these songs of joy,

  356. see what it says,

  357. the songs in the temple

  358. will turn to wailing.

  359. Harvest festival

  360. will no longer be

  361. a joyous occasion.

  362. And what is expected

  363. to be joy in the future

  364. is actually deafening silence

  365. because

  366. there is no future

  367. for Israel.

  368. The celebration of life

  369. and fruitfulness

  370. and abundance

  371. turns to a terrifying picture

  372. of death and destruction

  373. and decimation.

  374. Many, many bodies

  375. flung everywhere

  376. and

  377. silence.

  378. An ominous warning,

  379. the clock

  380. is ticking.

  381. God is saying,

  382. I've given you

  383. countless opportunities

  384. and yet you've carried on.

  385. You've been like

  386. that stiff-necked people

  387. this morning.

  388. You would not change.

  389. I was pulling on the reins

  390. and yet your trajectory

  391. was set.

  392. God has spoken

  393. to his people

  394. of judgment

  395. for seven chapters

  396. through Amos,

  397. trying to shock them

  398. into a response

  399. of seeking mercy,

  400. repenting of sin

  401. and pleading for forgiveness.

  402. They haven't moved

  403. a muscle.

  404. Did the sun

  405. that melts the wax

  406. has hardened their hearts?

  407. Their hearts are hard.

  408. And I wonder,

  409. friends,

  410. we must be very careful.

  411. We must be very careful

  412. about continuing

  413. to ignore God's challenge

  414. and warning in our lives.

  415. Seven chapters,

  416. God has been on

  417. at these people

  418. about this.

  419. This is wrong

  420. in your life.

  421. The way you treat

  422. the poor is wrong.

  423. The way you come

  424. to the temple

  425. is wrong.

  426. He's been putting

  427. his finger

  428. where they're going wrong

  429. and they've carried

  430. on regardless.

  431. And rather than

  432. just look at Israel

  433. and go,

  434. goodness,

  435. what a slow bunch

  436. of people.

  437. What about us?

  438. That in our own lives

  439. we read God's word,

  440. we hear God's word,

  441. we walk with God,

  442. but he puts

  443. his finger

  444. on areas of our lives

  445. that are not right.

  446. God's word,

  447. God's word,

  448. and this is a stark

  449. warning that you

  450. continue to ignore

  451. him at your peril.

  452. While he's still

  453. speaking to you

  454. about it,

  455. there's hope,

  456. but the room

  457. for repentance

  458. is not infinite.

  459. Is it a behavior

  460. we're entrenched

  461. in,

  462. an attitude

  463. we're clinging to,

  464. a past hurt

  465. that you can't let go,

  466. a sin you're feeding

  467. and not fighting?

  468. God has been

  469. on their case

  470. for ages.

  471. He has been

  472. so gracious

  473. in flagging

  474. their sin

  475. up to them.

  476. And yet they've

  477. gone,

  478. carried on.

  479. They've ignored him.

  480. They thought

  481. they were getting

  482. away with it.

  483. They thought

  484. just because judgment

  485. was delayed

  486. it would never come

  487. and God says

  488. in chapter 8,

  489. no,

  490. it's coming.

  491. The room

  492. for repentance

  493. is ended

  494. in your life

  495. as you continue

  496. to ignore

  497. what God is saying

  498. as I continue

  499. to ignore

  500. what God is

  501. challenging me on.

  502. We're doing

  503. serious damage

  504. to our relationship

  505. with Jesus,

  506. our effectiveness

  507. in God's kingdom

  508. and we may

  509. even be storing

  510. up trouble.

  511. We read

  512. repeatedly

  513. in 1 John,

  514. didn't we,

  515. that anyone

  516. who continues

  517. to sin

  518. neither loves

  519. God nor

  520. has seen

  521. him.

  522. And I wonder

  523. how true

  524. that is

  525. in our lives.

  526. Will a day

  527. come where

  528. God stops

  529. challenging us

  530. to us

  531. and he

  532. gives us

  533. over to us?

  534. He does it

  535. in Romans 1

  536. and I pray

  537. that he would

  538. never do it

  539. in our lives

  540. so our

  541. conscience is

  542. seared

  543. and we no

  544. longer bother.

  545. the gospel

  546. knows nothing

  547. of cheap grace.

  548. It doesn't.

  549. Jesus didn't

  550. die for us

  551. so we could

  552. continue regardless

  553. and have him

  554. like an insurance

  555. policy that we

  556. can slap on the

  557. desk at the end

  558. and say,

  559. well,

  560. that the great

  561. love God has

  562. shown us

  563. must invoke

  564. a response.

  565. Faith in the

  566. past,

  567. what Jesus

  568. has done,

  569. gives us

  570. infinite hope

  571. for the future

  572. which must

  573. encourage us

  574. to pursue

  575. holiness in the

  576. present.

  577. Or else we're

  578. just playing

  579. at it.

  580. And so

  581. Israel's trial

  582. has arrived.

  583. Israel's trial

  584. is here

  585. but it's

  586. not going to

  587. go well

  588. because the

  589. trial itself

  590. is a

  591. formality.

  592. This would

  593. be the worst

  594. courtroom drama

  595. anyone's ever

  596. conceived.

  597. From the

  598. opening credits

  599. everyone knows

  600. how it's going

  601. to go.

  602. No one in

  603. the jury

  604. is sitting

  605. on the edge

  606. of their

  607. seat waiting

  608. for the

  609. next bit

  610. of evidence

  611. no one

  612. in the

  613. public

  614. gallery

  615. is even

  616. dreaming

  617. of

  618. acquittal.

  619. And so

  620. in verses

  621. 4 to 6

  622. we get

  623. the charges

  624. read out,

  625. the indictments

  626. read out.

  627. These are

  628. not new

  629. crimes.

  630. These have

  631. been the

  632. very things

  633. that God

  634. has been

  635. on that

  636. case about

  637. since chapter

  638. 2.

  639. God even

  640. uses the

  641. same

  642. imagery,

  643. these twin

  644. sisters of

  645. social injustice

  646. and hypocritical

  647. worship.

  648. Look what's

  649. mentioned.

  650. Verse 4

  651. trampling

  652. on the

  653. needy.

  654. People going

  655. to the

  656. cash machine

  657. to get

  658. their

  659. hundreds

  660. out and

  661. not even

  662. going around

  663. the beggar

  664. on their

  665. way to do it

  666. but just

  667. walking over

  668. the top

  669. of it.

  670. Keeping

  671. to oppress

  672. them.

  673. Keeping

  674. them down

  675. in the

  676. gutter.

  677. Doing

  678. away with

  679. the poor.

  680. It's not

  681. bothering.

  682. Leaving

  683. them to

  684. their own

  685. devices.

  686. No

  687. charity.

  688. No

  689. social

  690. justice.

  691. And

  692. them

  693. exterminating

  694. themselves

  695. because

  696. they

  697. can't

  698. survive.

  699. The

  700. dishonest

  701. trading is

  702. unbelievable.

  703. Look

  704. halfway down

  705. verse 5

  706. there.

  707. Skimping

  708. on the

  709. measure,

  710. boosting

  711. the price,

  712. cheating

  713. with dishonest

  714. scales and

  715. mixing in

  716. the sweepings,

  717. the chaff of

  718. the wheat.

  719. That is

  720. quadruple

  721. extortion,

  722. right?

  723. That is

  724. not giving

  725. people what

  726. they pay

  727. for,

  728. asking them

  729. to pay

  730. too much,

  731. measuring it

  732. on scales

  733. that are

  734. stacked in

  735. the vendor's

  736. favour,

  737. and what

  738. they're paying

  739. for isn't

  740. even the

  741. real deal

  742. anyway.

  743. It's just

  744. the sweepings

  745. off the

  746. factory floor.

  747. Quadruple

  748. exploitation.

  749. Quadruple

  750. extortion.

  751. And not

  752. just trading

  753. commodities,

  754. but trading

  755. people.

  756. Buying the

  757. poor with

  758. silver,

  759. taking

  760. advantage of

  761. people's

  762. destitution,

  763. buying them

  764. as slaves

  765. to ease

  766. the comfort

  767. of your

  768. own lives,

  769. but doing

  770. nothing for

  771. them.

  772. Even

  773. using a

  774. pair of

  775. sandals.

  776. What a

  777. way to look

  778. on the

  779. poor,

  780. to think,

  781. oh,

  782. buy these

  783. with my

  784. spare pair

  785. of Birkenstocks,

  786. come,

  787. come and

  788. be my

  789. slaves.

  790. social

  791. injustice

  792. woven into

  793. the very

  794. fabric of

  795. Israelite

  796. society.

  797. This makes

  798. the subprime

  799. mortgage look

  800. almost ethical.

  801. Yet now

  802. the God

  803. whose heart

  804. beats

  805. specially for

  806. the widow,

  807. orphan,

  808. and stranger,

  809. that God

  810. who defines

  811. what pure

  812. and faultless

  813. religion is,

  814. is going to

  815. roll up

  816. its sleeves

  817. and weigh

  818. into this

  819. iniquitous

  820. inequality.

  821. See,

  822. also there's

  823. hypocritical

  824. worship at

  825. the beginning

  826. of verse

  827. five.

  828. When will

  829. the new

  830. moon be

  831. over that

  832. we may

  833. sell grain

  834. and the

  835. Sabbath be

  836. ended that

  837. we may

  838. market wheat?

  839. People

  840. sitting in

  841. church,

  842. not listening,

  843. not taking

  844. part,

  845. but thinking,

  846. when can I

  847. start earning

  848. money again?

  849. This whole

  850. religion thing

  851. has become an

  852. incredible

  853. inconvenience.

  854. It's halting

  855. my commerce.

  856. stopping me

  857. getting my

  858. produce to

  859. market.

  860. Utterly

  861. distracted,

  862. utterly

  863. duplicitous.

  864. Yes,

  865. we're there

  866. in body,

  867. but our

  868. mind is

  869. thinking of

  870. the marketplace.

  871. It's a

  872. real grave

  873. warning,

  874. isn't it,

  875. to sitting

  876. in church,

  877. but just

  878. totally

  879. consumed

  880. with Monday

  881. morning.

  882. Totally

  883. consumed

  884. with this

  885. and that,

  886. being here

  887. to feed

  888. our spirits,

  889. but thinking

  890. it all about

  891. shopping and

  892. selling.

  893. That's what

  894. these people

  895. are doing.

  896. I'm sure

  897. that there's

  898. many husbands

  899. in here

  900. who will

  901. have that

  902. occasion where

  903. your wife is

  904. speaking and

  905. you've zoned

  906. out.

  907. Quite often

  908. she's telling

  909. you really

  910. important stuff

  911. and you've

  912. totally missed

  913. it.

  914. I wonder

  915. how many

  916. times we've

  917. been in

  918. church and

  919. God has

  920. been speaking

  921. to us and

  922. we've totally

  923. missed it

  924. because we're

  925. thinking about

  926. the Grand

  927. Prix or

  928. that meeting

  929. or that

  930. legal drama

  931. we were

  932. watching.

  933. I'm sure

  934. that's what's

  935. going on

  936. here.

  937. The church

  938. attendance has

  939. become a

  940. chore.

  941. Doing the

  942. religious thing

  943. has become a

  944. real inconvenience

  945. and really

  946. dented profits.

  947. God brings

  948. charges and

  949. Israel is not

  950. looking good.

  951. There's no

  952. excuse,

  953. no mitigating

  954. circumstances,

  955. no legal loophole,

  956. no technicality.

  957. The charges

  958. are read out

  959. and the

  960. defense attorney

  961. stays seated.

  962. No questions,

  963. your honor,

  964. they say.

  965. And this is

  966. what we've

  967. seen.

  968. These twin

  969. themes of

  970. social injustice

  971. and hypocritical

  972. worship are

  973. one thing.

  974. Jesus says

  975. the most

  976. important thing

  977. is to love

  978. God with

  979. all your

  980. heart,

  981. soul,

  982. mind and

  983. strength

  984. and to

  985. love your

  986. neighbor as

  987. yourself.

  988. You fail

  989. to do this

  990. one and you

  991. start not

  992. doing that

  993. one.

  994. The two

  995. are connected.

  996. this is the

  997. most one-sided

  998. court hearing

  999. in history

  1000. proceeding at

  1001. a pace as

  1002. God prepares

  1003. to give his

  1004. verdict and

  1005. here it

  1006. comes.

  1007. Verse 7,

  1008. the Lord has

  1009. sworn by the

  1010. pride of

  1011. Jacob.

  1012. In Amos,

  1013. God has

  1014. sworn two

  1015. oaths already.

  1016. In chapter

  1017. 4, he

  1018. swore by his

  1019. holiness.

  1020. In chapter

  1021. 6, he

  1022. swore by

  1023. himself.

  1024. And in

  1025. chapter 8,

  1026. he swears

  1027. by the

  1028. pride of

  1029. Jacob.

  1030. And that's

  1031. very interesting

  1032. because what

  1033. is God

  1034. swearing by?

  1035. He's swearing

  1036. by that

  1037. which is

  1038. immutable,

  1039. that that

  1040. does not

  1041. change.

  1042. He says

  1043. God's

  1044. holiness,

  1045. it will

  1046. not change,

  1047. so my

  1048. oath is

  1049. pure.

  1050. Because

  1051. swearing by

  1052. my holiness,

  1053. my holiness

  1054. won't change,

  1055. so therefore

  1056. my vow

  1057. won't change.

  1058. In chapter

  1059. 6, the

  1060. Lord does

  1061. not change,

  1062. so when he

  1063. swears by

  1064. himself.

  1065. It's that

  1066. same

  1067. immutability

  1068. that his

  1069. vow will

  1070. not be

  1071. broken,

  1072. but see

  1073. what he's

  1074. done here.

  1075. I swear

  1076. by the

  1077. pride of

  1078. Jacob,

  1079. they've

  1080. got to

  1081. the point

  1082. where their

  1083. pride will

  1084. not be

  1085. quelled,

  1086. where they

  1087. cannot be

  1088. humbled.

  1089. He's

  1090. using a

  1091. destructive

  1092. trade in

  1093. their lives

  1094. and saying

  1095. you're so

  1096. stiff-necked

  1097. you won't

  1098. change,

  1099. therefore

  1100. it's

  1101. worthy of

  1102. an oath.

  1103. I swear

  1104. by the

  1105. very thing

  1106. I'm judging

  1107. you for

  1108. because I

  1109. know you

  1110. will not

  1111. change.

  1112. the sun

  1113. has hardened

  1114. the clay,

  1115. their arteries

  1116. have become

  1117. so clogged

  1118. and calloused

  1119. with themselves

  1120. that they

  1121. have no

  1122. time for

  1123. God.

  1124. And the

  1125. judgment is

  1126. seismic.

  1127. I will

  1128. not forget

  1129. says God.

  1130. Chapter 2

  1131. verse 7

  1132. he says

  1133. I will

  1134. not

  1135. relent.

  1136. The

  1137. God

  1138. disposed

  1139. to

  1140. casting

  1141. sin

  1142. into the

  1143. sea of

  1144. forgetfulness

  1145. that is

  1146. his nature

  1147. is so

  1148. provoked

  1149. by his

  1150. people

  1151. that he

  1152. says I'm

  1153. going to

  1154. write

  1155. these

  1156. sins

  1157. indelibly

  1158. on my

  1159. eternal

  1160. memory.

  1161. So

  1162. heinous,

  1163. so

  1164. persistent,

  1165. so

  1166. habitual,

  1167. has this

  1168. sin

  1169. become?

  1170. Will not

  1171. the land

  1172. tremble

  1173. for this

  1174. and all

  1175. who live

  1176. in it

  1177. mourn?

  1178. that's a

  1179. very ominous

  1180. verse

  1181. considering

  1182. where we

  1183. started in

  1184. chapter 1

  1185. verse 1

  1186. two years

  1187. before the

  1188. earthquake.

  1189. And here

  1190. he's talking

  1191. about the

  1192. earth

  1193. trembling

  1194. as he

  1195. judges his

  1196. people.

  1197. And the

  1198. Nile is

  1199. symbolized,

  1200. the hydrological

  1201. cycle of the

  1202. Nile where it

  1203. floods.

  1204. and then

  1205. the flood

  1206. waters

  1207. dissipate

  1208. but leave

  1209. nothing.

  1210. Even

  1211. mentioning

  1212. the

  1213. Nile is

  1214. haunting

  1215. geography

  1216. for God's

  1217. people because

  1218. the Nile is

  1219. synonymous for

  1220. Egypt and

  1221. Egypt is

  1222. synonymous

  1223. with slavery

  1224. and bad

  1225. times.

  1226. It's kind of

  1227. like talking

  1228. about

  1229. Bannockburn

  1230. for English

  1231. people or

  1232. talking about

  1233. Glencoe if

  1234. you're from

  1235. the McDonald's

  1236. clan.

  1237. worse God

  1238. says I'm

  1239. going to

  1240. judge you.

  1241. I'm going to

  1242. judge you but

  1243. this time not

  1244. sending you to

  1245. Egypt.

  1246. And then

  1247. rescuing you

  1248. after 400

  1249. years like we

  1250. were looking at

  1251. this morning.

  1252. I'm going to

  1253. judge you and

  1254. it's going to

  1255. be Assyria.

  1256. And return is

  1257. not going to

  1258. be on the

  1259. cards.

  1260. Worse than

  1261. that it'll

  1262. be like

  1263. de-creation.

  1264. Halfway through

  1265. verse 9 the

  1266. God who said

  1267. let there be

  1268. light now

  1269. says I'm

  1270. going to

  1271. bring darkness.

  1272. I'm going to

  1273. undo all that

  1274. I did at the

  1275. beginning.

  1276. It's going to

  1277. be a complete

  1278. reversal.

  1279. Day to

  1280. night feasting

  1281. to mourning

  1282. singing to

  1283. weeping plush

  1284. garments to

  1285. sackcloth shaved

  1286. heads.

  1287. I will make

  1288. you mourn as

  1289. for a first

  1290. born.

  1291. only son.

  1292. It will be

  1293. bitterness

  1294. everywhere.

  1295. This is a

  1296. verdict of

  1297. pure catastrophe

  1298. and absolute

  1299. horror.

  1300. It's a vision

  1301. of national

  1302. torment and

  1303. universal loss

  1304. that God

  1305. rains down on

  1306. a stubborn

  1307. heart-hearted

  1308. entrenched

  1309. people that

  1310. have dulled

  1311. their ears to

  1312. his voice and

  1313. seared their

  1314. hearts to their

  1315. own sin.

  1316. And see God

  1317. is intimately

  1318. involved in

  1319. verse 9.

  1320. Who is the

  1321. protagonist of

  1322. this judgment?

  1323. Well it's God.

  1324. I will.

  1325. I will.

  1326. I will.

  1327. I will.

  1328. God is there.

  1329. He is so

  1330. enraged by

  1331. their sin that

  1332. he says I'm

  1333. coming and I'm

  1334. coming to judge

  1335. and I'm going

  1336. to be at the

  1337. forefront.

  1338. That as Hebrew

  1339. says it is a

  1340. terrible thing to

  1341. fall into the

  1342. hands of the

  1343. living God.

  1344. Well Israel are

  1345. going to learn

  1346. just how terrible

  1347. it is.

  1348. in chapter 4

  1349. God has said

  1350. prepare to

  1351. meet your

  1352. God.

  1353. In chapter 5

  1354. he talks about

  1355. it all going

  1356. bad because

  1357. God is going

  1358. to pass through

  1359. their midst.

  1360. And in chapter

  1361. 8 he's here

  1362. and it's national

  1363. and it's total

  1364. and it's final.

  1365. That's not even

  1366. the worst bit.

  1367. The worst bit

  1368. comes as he lays

  1369. out the punishment.

  1370. Verse 11

  1371. God will send

  1372. a famine.

  1373. Not a physical

  1374. famine.

  1375. We're not going

  1376. to be phoning

  1377. Bono and Bob

  1378. Geldof and

  1379. trying to get

  1380. Band-Aid back

  1381. together.

  1382. It's going to be

  1383. a spiritual famine

  1384. a famine of

  1385. God's word.

  1386. God declares

  1387. that I will send

  1388. a famine through

  1389. the land not a

  1390. famine of food

  1391. or a thirst for

  1392. water but a

  1393. famine of hearing

  1394. God's word.

  1395. God has

  1396. declared it but

  1397. Israel has

  1398. incited it because

  1399. in chapter 2

  1400. they've told the

  1401. prophets to shut

  1402. up the people

  1403. that were bringing

  1404. God's word.

  1405. The Nazarites who

  1406. were to be a

  1407. pillar of God's

  1408. word are the

  1409. ones that are

  1410. told to drink up

  1411. your wine and

  1412. don't worry too

  1413. much about your

  1414. vows.

  1415. And now God

  1416. has given them

  1417. what they wanted.

  1418. A famine of

  1419. hearing God's

  1420. word.

  1421. God is going

  1422. to stop

  1423. roaring.

  1424. He's going to

  1425. stop speaking.

  1426. God's word is

  1427. going to disappear

  1428. from the land.

  1429. God will

  1430. withhold his

  1431. life-giving,

  1432. life-changing,

  1433. life-granting

  1434. word from his

  1435. people because

  1436. they've had so

  1437. much of it and

  1438. they've done

  1439. nothing.

  1440. And the picture

  1441. is horrendous of

  1442. people staggering

  1443. from sea to sea,

  1444. wandering from

  1445. north to east,

  1446. searching for the

  1447. word of the

  1448. Lord, but they

  1449. will not find

  1450. it.

  1451. it's like

  1452. the walker,

  1453. the hiker,

  1454. being lost in

  1455. the highlands,

  1456. but the mobile

  1457. phone signals

  1458. out, the map

  1459. has blown

  1460. away, the

  1461. tent is ripped,

  1462. the sleeping

  1463. bag's wet,

  1464. the fog has

  1465. descended,

  1466. and the

  1467. blizzards come

  1468. in.

  1469. That God

  1470. says you are

  1471. lost, but I'm

  1472. going to withhold

  1473. from you my

  1474. word, which is

  1475. the only thing

  1476. that will bring

  1477. you back.

  1478. God says

  1479. thirst.

  1480. The results

  1481. are devastating.

  1482. First 13, the

  1483. lovely women and

  1484. the strong young

  1485. men will faint

  1486. because of

  1487. thirst.

  1488. If you go into

  1489. a pub in

  1490. Edinburgh, there's

  1491. two groups of

  1492. people that will

  1493. be well hydrated.

  1494. There'll be

  1495. strong young men

  1496. who have the

  1497. money and the

  1498. lovely young

  1499. women who will

  1500. be the recipients

  1501. of many drinks.

  1502. thirst.

  1503. And here, they're

  1504. thirsty.

  1505. So, total is

  1506. this judgment.

  1507. The lions now

  1508. stopped roaring.

  1509. The lion, he

  1510. was roaring in

  1511. chapter 1, verse

  1512. 1, is now

  1513. prowling in the

  1514. shadows.

  1515. It is a

  1516. catastrophic

  1517. judgment.

  1518. Idolatry exposed.

  1519. What's going on

  1520. in verse 14 is

  1521. the sin of

  1522. Samaria.

  1523. I think it's a

  1524. reference to the

  1525. worship of the

  1526. God.

  1527. God as

  1528. Asherah, this

  1529. fertility God.

  1530. And I think it's

  1531. come round about

  1532. that they've been

  1533. worshipping this

  1534. fertility God in

  1535. secret who

  1536. legitimates all

  1537. their high living

  1538. and luxurious

  1539. life.

  1540. And this God

  1541. who was supposed

  1542. to bring fertility

  1543. has only actually

  1544. ripened them for

  1545. judgment.

  1546. No more

  1547. harvest.

  1548. They will fall

  1549. never to rise

  1550. again.

  1551. total.

  1552. My people are

  1553. like a basket of

  1554. ripe fruit.

  1555. They're ripe for

  1556. judgment.

  1557. Their sin has

  1558. remained unrepented

  1559. of.

  1560. It's going to be

  1561. catastrophic earthquake

  1562. and everything's

  1563. going to be

  1564. different.

  1565. And they'll fall

  1566. and never get up.

  1567. What a thoroughly

  1568. depressing evening,

  1569. right?

1570. A lot of you are

  1571. thinking I should have

  1572. just stayed.

  1573. antiques,

  1574. roadshow and

  1575. songs of praise

  1576. would have done

  1577. me tonight

  1578. rather than

  1579. come and

  1580. listen to this.

  1581. It's heavy.

  1582. However,

  1583. before we give

  1584. up,

  1585. I think there

  1586. is hope.

  1587. Hope,

  1588. not from this

  1589. passage.

  1590. This passage is

  1591. devoid of hope,

  1592. but as those

  1593. that know the

  1594. end of the

  1595. story,

  1596. I think we

  1597. can read

  1598. hope into

  1599. it.

  1600. That way in

  1601. the shower on

  1602. Monday morning,

  1603. we might not

  1604. just be tempted

  1605. to just stay

  1606. there.

  1607. We stand

  1608. here this

  1609. evening as

  1610. those not

  1611. just given

  1612. the written

  1613. word of

  1614. God,

  1615. but those

  1616. given the

  1617. living word

  1618. of God.

  1619. That we're

  1620. not here

  1621. suffering a

  1622. famine of

  1623. God's word,

  1624. we have an

  1625. abundance,

  1626. a full

  1627. disclosure of

  1628. God's word

  1629. in the Lord

  1630. Jesus.

  1631. We are not

  1632. famished,

  1633. we are privy

  1634. to God's

  1635. word in all

  1636. its fullness.

  1637. But I think

  1638. it's even

  1639. better,

  1640. because as I've

  1641. read this this

  1642. week,

  1643. I realize I'm

  1644. not actually

  1645. that different

  1646. to Israel,

  1647. I want to

  1648. condemn them,

  1649. but they're

  1650. kind of as

  1651. sinful and as

  1652. rebellious and

  1653. hard-hearted as

  1654. me.

  1655. But this is

  1656. the truth,

  1657. that God

  1658. sent his

  1659. son,

  1660. the living

  1661. word,

  1662. to take all

  1663. of this

  1664. judgment on

  1665. himself that

  1666. I might have

  1667. life,

  1668. that I might

  1669. never suffer

  1670. these consequences.

  1671. God himself

  1672. was the one

  1673. who mourned

  1674. as for an

  1675. only son.

  1676. Jesus was

  1677. the one who's

  1678. hair was

  1679. ripped out

  1680. as he went

  1681. to the cross

  1682. that I

  1683. deserved,

  1684. because I

  1685. too have

  1686. hypocritically

  1687. worshipped God

  1688. and continued

  1689. in my sin

  1690. and repented.

  1691. He was a

  1692. young man

  1693. who cried

  1694. out in

  1695. thirst from

  1696. the cross.

  1697. He was the

  1698. one for whom

  1699. the son really

  1700. did go down

  1701. at noon

  1702. as he died

  1703. for my sin

  1704. on that

  1705. terrible

  1706. and awful

  1707. hell.

  1708. He was

  1709. the one

  1710. who shed

  1711. his blood

  1712. so that God

  1713. would not

  1714. say,

  1715. I will no

  1716. longer pass

  1717. by,

  1718. but he was

  1719. the one who

  1720. said,

  1721. if you

  1722. shelter under

  1723. my blood,

  1724. I will pass

  1725. by.

  1726. And you

  1727. can be one

  1728. whom

  1729. condemnation is

  1730. not a part of

  1731. your life

  1732. because you

  1733. are in

  1734. Christ Jesus.

  1735. And so

  1736. while this is

  1737. bad news for

  1738. Israel,

  1739. I think,

  1740. I hope,

  1741. it only paints

  1742. a bleak

  1743. dark black

  1744. ground so

  1745. that the

  1746. jewel,

  1747. the precious

  1748. cornerstone

  1749. of Jesus

  1750. Christ might

  1751. shine all

  1752. the more.

  1753. Because we

  1754. deserve this

  1755. and we get

  1756. that.

  1757. We deserve

  1758. this judgment

  1759. but we get

  1760. that life.

  1761. And so

  1762. three quick

  1763. things.

  1764. As we sum

  1765. up.

  1766. Response

  1767. time is

  1768. finite.

  1769. We see

  1770. that so

  1771. clearly in

  1772. this chapter.

  1773. They had

  1774. seven chapters

  1775. to repent.

  1776. There was

  1777. space for

  1778. grace but

  1779. now it's

  1780. run out.

  1781. And yes,

  1782. the Assyrians

  1783. won't come

  1784. for a while

  1785. but they're

  1786. coming.

  1787. They won't

  1788. turn back.

  1789. And this is

  1790. important for

  1791. us.

  1792. I don't care

  1793. how long

  1794. we've been

  1795. coming to

  1796. church.

  1797. If we have

  1798. not come to

  1799. Jesus in

  1800. repentance and

  1801. faith,

  1802. these guys

  1803. went to

  1804. church all

  1805. the time

  1806. but it

  1807. made no

  1808. difference to

  1809. them.

  1810. The real

  1811. difference is

  1812. made by

  1813. trusting the

  1814. Lord Jesus

  1815. that he took

  1816. our judgment

  1817. for us.

  1818. But also,

  1819. we can so

  1820. easily go out

  1821. from this

  1822. into Monday

  1823. morning.

  1824. We can so

  1825. easily go and

  1826. hang out with

  1827. friends and

  1828. colleagues and

  1829. relatives.

  1830. ourselves.

  1831. But the

  1832. clock is

  1833. ticking for

  1834. them in a

  1835. very real

  1836. way.

  1837. Because Jesus

  1838. is coming

  1839. back and

  1840. their life

  1841. is slipping

  1842. away.

  1843. And their

  1844. only hope is

  1845. to respond to

  1846. this living

  1847. word.

  1848. Response

  1849. time is

  1850. finite.

  1851. And true

  1852. life comes

  1853. through God's

  1854. word.

  1855. That's why

  1856. when God

  1857. takes his

  1858. word away,

  1859. famine and

  1860. death is the

  1861. only option.

  1862. that we

  1863. know about

  1864. the living

  1865. word by

  1866. reading the

  1867. written word.

  1868. And so if

  1869. we have no

  1870. access to

  1871. this, we

  1872. have no hope

  1873. of meeting

  1874. Jesus.

  1875. And so

  1876. true life

  1877. comes through

  1878. this living

  1879. word.

  1880. Are we

  1881. obsessed with

  1882. this book?

  1883. Not because

  1884. we like

  1885. reading words

  1886. on a page,

  1887. but we like

  1888. meeting the

  1889. God who

  1890. perfectly

  1891. reveals himself

  1892. in it.

  1893. And as I

  1894. was telling

  1895. the students

  1896. yesterday,

  1897. it's the

  1898. most glorious

  1899. virtuous circle.

  1900. As we were

  1901. reading in

  1902. 1 Peter 2,

  1903. crave the

  1904. pure spiritual

  1905. milk of

  1906. God's word.

  1907. How do you

  1908. build up a

  1909. craving?

  1910. How do you

  1911. become addicted

  1912. to God's

  1913. word?

  1914. Well,

  1915. exposing yourself

  1916. to it all

  1917. the time.

  1918. That as we

  1919. learn of God,

  1920. we learn how

  1921. lovely and

  1922. beautiful and

  1923. majestic and

  1924. glorious he

  1925. is.

  1926. We see his

  1927. plan in

  1928. fulfilled and

  1929. gloriously

  1930. accomplished in

  1931. Jesus,

  1932. which makes

  1933. us love him

  1934. more,

  1935. which makes

  1936. us want to

  1937. read more

  1938. of him,

  1939. which makes

  1940. us understand

  1941. him better,

  1942. which makes

  1943. us love

  1944. Jesus more,

  1945. which makes

  1946. us want to

  1947. read more

  1948. of God's

  1949. word.

  1950. The reason

  1951. we all

  1952. struggle so

  1953. much with

  1954. Bible study

  1955. and daily

  1956. devotions is

  1957. because we

  1958. don't do

  1959. Bible study

  1960. and daily

  1961. devotions.

  1962. But if we

  1963. start,

  1964. we'll get a

  1965. real taste

  1966. for it.

  1967. We'll get a

  1968. real craving.

  1969. We'll become

  1970. obsessed with

  1971. what God has

  1972. done.

  1973. And then I

  1974. guess connected

  1975. to that,

  1976. substitutes for

  1977. God's word

  1978. bring death.

  1979. Israel does

  1980. a lot of

  1981. church,

  1982. it does a

  1983. lot of

  1984. religious

  1985. activity.

  1986. But it's

  1987. not done

  1988. them any

  1989. good because

  1990. God's word

  1991. is ignored.

  1992. God's truth

  1993. is sidelined.

  1994. As you look

  1995. through church

  1996. history,

  1997. there's been

  1998. many occasions

  1999. where God's

  2000. word has been

  2001. sidelined,

  2002. where the

  2003. sacraments

  2004. have taken

  2005. into stage,

  2006. where spiritual

  2007. gifts,

  2008. where the

  2009. traditions of

  2010. man,

  2011. war,

  2012. where the

  2013. type of

  2014. worship music

  2015. where social

  2016. justice has

  2017. taken center

  2018. stage.

  2019. Let's be

  2020. clear, a lot

  2021. of that is

  2022. really good

  2023. stuff.

  2024. But if it's

  2025. not driven

  2026. by God's

  2027. word, it's

  2028. not doing

  2029. us any

  2030. good.

  2031. And so

  2032. the main

  2033. thing is that

  2034. the main

  2035. thing remains

  2036. the main

  2037. thing.

  2038. And this

  2039. is the main

  2040. thing and

  2041. that's going

  2042. to drive and

  2043. bear all this

  2044. fruit and

  2045. bring real

  2046. significance.

  2047. But if this

  2048. isn't the

  2049. first brick in

  2050. the war,

  2051. if it's

  2052. not God's

  2053. word we're

  2054. coming to

  2055. that is

  2056. shaping our

  2057. lives and

  2058. giving us

  2059. life, then

  2060. we're in just

  2061. as much danger

  2062. as Israel

  2063. found themselves

  2064. in.

  2065. So chapter

  2066. eight is

  2067. dark.

  2068. The beginning

  2069. of chapter

  2070. nine is

  2071. dark.

  2072. But by the

  2073. time we leave

  2074. next week,

  2075. we'll be

  2076. skipping off

  2077. into the

  2078. day as we

  2079. see Jesus

  2080. so clearly.

  2081. Let me

  2082. pray.

  2083. Father God,

  2084. as we go

  2085. out into

  2086. this week,

  2087. Father,

  2088. would you

  2089. keep our

  2090. feet pointed

  2091. towards what

  2092. is good?

  2093. Father,

  2094. would you

  2095. keep our

  2096. hearts soft?

  2097. Would you

  2098. keep our

  2099. minds fixed

  2100. on things

  2101. above?

  2102. Would you

  2103. keep our

  2104. ears open

  2105. to your

  2106. voice that

  2107. we might be

  2108. responsive to

  2109. all that you're

  2110. calling us

  2111. to?

  2112. And

  2113. Father,

  2114. that our

  2115. eyes might

  2116. be fixed

  2117. with laser

  2118. precision on

  2119. your son

  2120. Jesus.

  2121. Father,

  2122. we confess

  2123. we're just

  2124. like Israel,

  2125. prone to

  2126. the same

  2127. selfishness.

  2128. Father,

  2129. prone to

  2130. the same

  2131. just going

  2132. through the

  2133. motions and

  2134. trying to

  2135. keep up

  2136. appearances.

  2137. But we're

  2138. so thankful

  2139. for what we

  2140. read in

  2141. your written

  2142. word of

  2143. your living

  2144. word,

  2145. the Lord

  2146. Jesus

  2147. coming,

  2148. taking the

  2149. judgment we

  2150. deserve so

  2151. that we

  2152. might have

  2153. life.

  2154. And Lord,

  2155. even more,

  2156. you've given

  2157. us your

  2158. spirit that we

  2159. might be

  2160. shaped and

  2161. molded.

  2162. That we

  2163. might be

  2164. those that

  2165. because of

  2166. Jesus uphold

  2167. the rights

  2168. and the needs

  2169. of poor

  2170. people and

  2171. have every

  2172. hope of

  2173. worshipping you

  2174. in spirit

  2175. and in

  2176. truth.

  2177. So Lord,

  2178. bless these

  2179. things to

  2180. us.

  2181. Send us

  2182. off into

  2183. this week to

  2184. be dangerous

  2185. and different

  2186. for Jesus,

  2187. we pray.

  2188. In his

  2189. holy name.

  2190. Amen.
