  1. Well, please have a seat.

  2. Please grab your Bibles or turn them on and scroll to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  3. Just before we dig in, why don't I pray for us and then we'll get to work.

  4. Let's pray.

  5. Father God, thank you that so much of our service has been on the truth that you came.

  6. And Father, our prayer now is that you would come and meet us in your word.

  7. Father, you would come and speak to us.

  8. Father, that we would leave here loving your son more, cherishing him deeper.

  9. And Father, being more conformed to his likeness as we've already been praying.

  10. So Father, help us concentrate.

  11. Fathers, help us discern your voice in the midst of the great cacophony of noises that crowded on our lives.

  12. Father, do your work to your glory, we pray.

  13. In the name of your son.

  14. Amen.

  15. Well, this is the second installment in our series in Hebrews, Out of the Shadows.

  16. This morning we're in Hebrews 2, looking at Jesus, our unashamed brother.

  17. And the book of Hebrews is written to Jewish Christians.

  18. And the writer writes the book because these believers are tempted to turn away from Jesus and to crawl back to the safety and security and familiarity of Judaism.

  19. And the book is a letter-ish, but it's more of a sermon.

  20. And in the sermon he is telling them, stick in with Jesus.

  21. He's saying, stick in with Jesus and don't turn back to the shadowlands of the now defunct Old Testament Jewish faith.

  22. And in chapter 1 last week, Graham was telling us that Jesus was fully God.

  23. He is 100% God.

  24. He is the one as superior to the angels as the name that he's been given is superior to theirs.

  25. He's written explicitly that Jesus the Son is God's full and final word to humanity.

  26. He's written that Jesus is God's final fulfilled and finished work for us.

  27. That Jesus is God's glory revealed and his character disclosed.

  28. He is God's agent of creation and the sustainer of creation.

  29. He is the one infinitely superior to angels and given the name superior to every name.

  30. In chapter 1 he is laying out unequivocally his case that Jesus is 100% God.

  31. In the rest of chapter 1 he gives us seven Old Testament quotes to highlight all that God has said to, through, in and about his Son.

  32. Which brings us to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  33. If Hebrews chapter 1 is all about Jesus being 100% God, then Hebrews chapter 2 is all about Jesus being 100% man.

Hebrews 1 chapter mention Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  34. 100% man.

  35. I don't know about you, but as I get older, I'm amazed how small things are becoming other than myself.

  36. I seem to be swelling as time goes by.

  37. But if you think of the first mobile phone and how enormous that was, and now you get a phone that's just one and a half inches big.

  38. Or you think of the computer.

  39. I don't know how many of you were at school when computers came in, but they took up almost whole wings of the school.

  40. There was a room.

  41. Computers, tough.

  42. Huge things.

  43. And now you can get this little thing that plugs into your HD television and turns it into a fully functioning PC.

  44. Way more, infinitely more powerful than the one that used to take up a room.

  45. Or the television.

  46. Used to be huge.

  47. There used to be three of you to carry it, and you still wanted more.

  48. And now you get something that's so wafer thin and small that's curved and in 4K.

  49. If Santa was good to you.

  50. Or the car.

  51. That now is shrunk down to that kind of size.

  52. Or the library that now fits on that.

  53. It's amazing how you can shrink massive things to become tiny things.

  54. And that's true.

  55. The miraculous miniaturization that took place 2,000 years ago is unbelievable.

  56. That when a young peasant girl a long way from home amidst the squalor and stench of a stable,

  57. grasping the hand of her betrothed gives birth to God.

  58. That is miraculous miniaturization.

  59. The big message of Hebrews concerns this mind-bending doctrine that God would shrink himself and take on human flesh.

  60. That is the video at the beginning said that the God of all would come as a baby.

  61. Just look at our passage.

  62. Look at verse 9 in Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  63. But we do see Jesus who was made lower than the angels for a little while.

  64. Lower than the angels he became man.

  65. Look at verse 11.

  66. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family.

  67. That is, they are human.

  68. That Jesus became human.

  69. Look at verse 14.

  70. Since the children have flesh and blood, he too, that is, Jesus, shared in their humanity.

  71. Verse 17.

  72. For this reason, he, Jesus, had to be made like them, fully human in every way.

  73. The unfathomable truth that Hebrews 2 is looking at is the incarnation,

  74. where the infinite becomes finite, creator becomes creature,

  75. the sustainer of all things is sustained by others.

  76. The all-powerful becomes weak.

  77. The sovereign God becomes dependent on others.

  78. The one without being is born.

  79. Spirit becomes matter.

  80. Boundlessness takes on flesh.

  81. The indescribable becomes 65% oxygen, 19% carbon, 9% nitrogen, 9% hydrogen, 3% nitrogen, 2% calcium, 1% phosphorus,

  82. with a sprinkling of potassium, 2% sodium, 2% sodium, 2% sodium, 2% magnesium, thrown in for seasoning.

  83. Hebrews 2, the big thing, Jesus becomes man.

  84. Jesus becomes man.

  85. It's a potentially embarrassing truth, isn't it?

  86. That when you take your friends to the nativity service and you say,

  87. well, that inanimate object, that doll in the manger, that's God.

  88. That's what I believed to be God when God came.

  89. To focus on Jesus and his teaching and his humanitarian work,

  90. rather than the fact that he's God is a little bit more comfortable.

  91. To say that Jesus is a good man, a great teacher, a revolutionary leader, a proper prophet,

  92. is all very fine in our world, but to say he's God,

  93. that God entered human history, that's potentially embarrassing.

  94. And it seemed to be potentially embarrassing for the first readers of Hebrews.

  95. They've given up all the pomp and circumstance of the temple

  96. and now they worship God who became man,

  97. who died on a blood-spluttered cross.

  98. It's potentially embarrassing, isn't it, to say that God came,

  99. that all of God was contained in this person, Jesus Christ.

  100. So easy to think this is a pipe dream, a fairy tale you want to file alongside the tooth fairy,

  101. the Easter bunny and the Scottish qualification for a major football championships.

  102. Yet the writer to the Hebrews lovingly, pastorally and compellingly shows the readers and us

  103. that the incarnation is beautiful,

  104. that it is necessary, it is miraculous,

  105. and it is unescapably central to everything we believe.

  106. Far from ridiculous, it is glorious.

  107. The writer to the Hebrews, as we read Hebrews 2,

  108. it sounds complicated, but I want to give you four simple things,

  109. hopefully, that it means.

  110. You can tell me at the door afterwards if I've managed.

  111. Why did Jesus became man?

  112. Here's the first thing.

  113. Jesus became man to announce salvation.

  114. Read with me, one to four.

  115. We must pay the most careful attention,

  116. therefore, to what we have heard so that we do not drift away.

  117. For since the message spoken through angels was binding,

  118. and every violation and disobedience received is just punishment,

  119. how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?

  120. This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,

  121. was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

  122. God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles,

  123. and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

  124. Did you read it?

  125. First announced by the Lord.

  126. This message of salvation first announced by the Lord.

  127. After 400 years of salvation,

  128. Jesus says salvation has come.

  129. The King has come.

  130. The kingdom is here.

  131. And the message that Jesus announces,

  132. the message of salvation,

  133. is being contrasted with the message communicated by angels,

  134. which is almost certainly to say the Old Covenant,

  135. the Old Testament law.

  136. The message that came through angels to Moses,

  137. Old Testament covenants,

  138. is being compared with all that now comes in and through,

  139. spoken and delivered by Jesus.

  140. So in Deuteronomy 33 verse 2,

    Deuteronomy 33:2

  141. the Lord came from Sinai and dawned from Seah upon us.

  142. He shone forth from Mount Parah.

  143. He came from the 10,000s of holy ones,

  144. angels with flaming fire at his right hand.

  145. Or in Acts 7,

  146. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,

  147. God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

  148. This is the one who was,

  149. this is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness

  150. with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai.

  151. And with our fathers,

  152. he received living oracles to give us.

  153. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?

  154. And they killed those who announced beforehand

  155. the coming of the righteous one,

  156. whom you have now betrayed and murdered.

  157. You who received the law as delivered by angels

  158. and did not keep it.

  159. Paul writes something very similar in Galatians 3.

  160. Do you see that he's saying,

  161. you got this message from angels,

  162. this Old Testament law.

  163. This Old Testament delivered to you,

  164. announced to you by God through angels.

  165. And he's saying,

  166. if you didn't obey that message,

  167. you were in real trouble.

  168. There was punishment for every violation and disobedience.

  169. If you disobeyed that,

  170. how will you escape if you turn away from this message?

  171. This message that Jesus comes as a fulfillment of all of that message.

  172. This message announced by Jesus,

  173. confirmed by eyewitnesses,

  174. testified by God through signs and wonders,

  175. affirmed by gifts of the Holy Spirit.

  176. Why would you go back to that message,

  177. which was just the national anthem before the kickoff

  178. that's now been announced by Jesus?

  179. If you leave this message,

  180. you leave everything.

  181. Because that was simply pointing forward to Jesus Christ.

  182. If you were punished for ignoring the old message,

  183. then it's not going to go well

  184. if you ignore this new message given by Jesus.

  185. And so there's this explicit warning.

  186. How shall we escape

  187. if we neglect such a great salvation?

  188. And the answer is we won't.

  189. We absolutely won't.

  190. And so what does he say to them in verse 1?

  191. Don't drift away.

  192. We must pay the most careful attention,

  193. therefore, to what we have heard

  194. so that we do not drift away.

  195. So we don't get lost.

  196. If we start ignoring this,

  197. if we start minimizing what Jesus has said to us,

  198. we drift away into nothingness and lostness.

  199. The writer is worried that his readers

  200. are not tied up tightly to Jesus Christ

  201. and they're going to drift away.

  202. They're going to drift back to Judaism

  203. and they're going to lose everything.

  204. He's saying don't drift away.

  205. Tie up tightly to the message of salvation.

  206. Pay the most careful attention

  207. to what God has told you

  208. in his son, Jesus Christ,

  209. or you'll suffer eternal loss.

  210. The most careful attention.

  211. Unless you keep the main thing,

  212. the main thing,

  213. you'll just drift away

  214. into nonsense and nothingness.

  215. The writer to the Hebrews

  216. is worried that some of his readers

  217. are in the haven of the church

  218. but they're not more to Jesus Christ.

  219. So when the storm comes

  220. and it's coming,

  221. they'll just float away.

  222. Maybe that's true of some people

  223. here this morning.

  224. We love church.

  225. We've got some friends here.

  226. The coffee's reasonable.

  227. The tray bakes are awesome.

  228. We quite enjoy the singing.

  229. But the Jesus stuff,

  230. we could take or leave.

  231. And the writer to the Hebrews says,

  232. if you leave the message of Jesus,

  233. you leave it all.

  234. That is the very center of everything

  235. that this place is here for.

  236. Saying this message is of eternal worth.

  237. And paying close attention to that

  238. is the only way

  239. not to drift away into lostness

  240. and nothingness.

  241. Jesus became a man

  242. to announce salvation

  243. and it's implicit

  244. that we listen to him.

  245. It's the most important thing

  246. that we hear and respond to

  247. and keep responding to

  248. unless we drift away.

  249. No, Jesus.

  250. Only punishment, he's saying.

  251. Second thing he says,

  252. and the rest of the chapter

  253. is really just fleshing out

  254. that truth

  255. that Jesus became man

  256. to bring us to glory.

  257. Verse 5.

  258. It is not to angels

  259. that he has subjected the world to come

  260. about which we are speaking.

  261. But there is a place

  262. where someone has testified,

  263. what is mankind

  264. that you are mindful of them,

  265. a son of man

  266. that you came for him.

  267. You made them

  268. a little lower than the angels.

  269. You crowned them

  270. with glory and honor

  271. and put everything

  272. under their feet.

  273. In putting everything under them,

  274. God left nothing

  275. that is not subject to them.

  276. Yet at present,

  277. we do not see everything

  278. subject to them,

  279. but we do see Jesus.

  280. He was made lower

  281. than the angels

  282. for a little while,

  283. who now crowned

  284. with glory and honor

  285. because he suffered death

  286. so that by the grace of God

  287. he might taste death

  288. for everyone.

  289. In bringing many sons

  290. and daughters to glory,

  291. it was fitting that God,

  292. for whom and through whom

  293. everything exists,

  294. should make the pioneer

  295. of their salvation perfect

  296. through what he suffered.

  297. He now quotes Psalm 8

  298. and in Psalm 8,

  299. God looks at the magnificence

  300. of creation.

  301. He's humbled by it

  302. and he says,

  303. well, why do you care

  304. about human beings?

  305. If you've done all this stuff,

  306. why am I significant?

  307. Why am I important?

  308. Why would God be so gracious

  309. and promise humanity

  310. glory and honor

  311. when he's obviously

  312. so powerful

  313. and so magnificent?

  314. And so in Psalm 8,

  315. there's this promise

  316. that mankind will be crowned

  317. with glory and honor

  318. and everything

  319. will be under mankind's authority.

  320. That's a great promise,

  321. but it seems that something

  322. has gone severely wrong.

  323. That it doesn't feel like

  324. we have authority

  325. over really anything

  326. in our world.

  327. We have natural disasters,

  328. we have wars,

  329. we have terrorism,

  330. corruption,

  331. domestic abuse,

  332. child poverty.

  333. Despite all the efforts,

  334. it doesn't seem we can

  335. find a total cure to cancer

  336. across the board.

  337. That this glory and honor

  338. and this authority

  339. that we're promised

  340. doesn't seem to play out

  341. in real life.

  342. So what's happened?

  343. Well, we've happened.

  344. Our sinfulness

  345. has spoiled the plan.

  346. That we are all created

  347. for God's glory,

  348. to enjoy God's glory.

  349. That is the trajectory

  350. we're on.

  351. But we turned away

  352. and we prefer to

  353. worship ourselves.

  354. We wanted glory

  355. for ourselves.

  356. We turned inward

  357. on ourselves.

  358. We forsook

  359. God's glory

  360. and sinned against him.

  361. So now we don't see

  362. everything subject

  363. to mankind.

  364. We see a world

  365. that's in real trouble

  366. and seemingly spiraling

  367. out of control.

  368. But the beautiful thing

  369. it says here,

  370. yet at present

  371. we do not see

  372. everything subject

  373. to them,

  374. but we do see Jesus.

  375. Jesus came

  376. to bring us

  377. to glory.

  378. We now can't

  379. get there ourselves,

  380. so Jesus comes

  381. to bring us

  382. and restore us

  383. to the glory

  384. for which we were

  385. created for.

  386. we lost

  387. paradise,

  388. but Jesus

  389. regained it

  390. for us.

  391. That he

  392. was made

  393. a little lower

  394. than the angels

  395. for a little while.

  396. That he

  397. maintained the

  398. trajectory

  399. towards God's

  400. glory.

  401. And therefore

  402. hope is restored.

  403. Hope is restored.

  404. He suffered

  405. our death

  406. for forsaking

  407. God's glory.

  408. glory.

  409. So we can

  410. have the life

  411. that he won

  412. for us.

  413. Hope is restored.

  414. Glory once again

  415. can be ours

  416. in Jesus.

  417. He brings us

  418. to glory,

  419. verse 10.

  420. In bringing

  421. many sons and

  422. daughters to glory,

  423. people who will

  424. trust him,

  425. that he's

  426. accomplished

  427. what we

  428. have failed

  429. to do.

  430. It was fitting

  431. that God,

  432. for whom

  433. and through whom

  434. everything existed,

  435. should make

  436. the pioneer

  437. of their salvation,

  438. the one who

  439. wins for us

  440. perfect through

  441. what he suffered.

  442. He becomes

  443. perfectly

  444. qualified

  445. to be our

  446. saviour because

  447. he suffered

  448. for us.

  449. He took

  450. what we

  451. deserved.

  452. One who

  453. has absolute

  454. authority over

  455. everything,

  456. even now.

  457. And in the

  458. future it will

  459. be utterly

  460. revealed,

  461. as so to

  462. everyone.

  463. And so the

  464. writer to the

  465. Hebrews is saying,

  466. give up on

  467. Jesus,

  468. you give up

  469. on any

  470. hope of

  471. glory.

  472. Jesus is

  473. the one who

  474. brings you

  475. to glory,

  476. and if you

  477. turn your

  478. back from

  479. him,

  480. no,

  481. you won't

  482. be bought

  483. because you

  484. can't get

  485. there yourselves.

  486. Jesus became

  487. man to bring

  488. you,

  489. to bring me

  490. to glory

  491. through faith

  492. in him.

  493. The one who

  494. got there

  495. when we

  496. couldn't.

  497. So hope

  498. is restored.

  499. Jesus became

  500. man to

  501. bring us

  502. to glory.

  503. Number three,

  504. verses 11 to

  505. 16.

  506. both the

  507. one who

  508. makes people

  509. holy and

  510. those who

  511. are made

  512. holy are

  513. of the

  514. same family.

  515. So Jesus

  516. is not ashamed

  517. to call them

  518. brothers and

  519. sisters.

  520. He says,

  521. I will declare

  522. your name to

  523. my brothers

  524. and sisters.

  525. In the

  526. assembly I

  527. will sing

  528. your praises.

  529. And again,

  530. I will put

  531. my trust in

  532. him.

  533. And again,

  534. he says,

  535. here am I

  536. and the

  537. children God

  538. has given

  539. me.

  540. Since the

  541. children have

  542. flesh and

  543. blood,

  544. he too

  545. shed in

  546. their humanity

  547. so that

  548. by his

  549. death he

  550. might break

  551. the power

  552. of him

  553. who holds

  554. the power

  555. of death,

  556. that is the

  557. devil,

  558. and free

  559. those who

  560. all their

  561. lives was

  562. held in

  563. slavery by

  564. their fear

  565. of death.

  566. For surely

  567. it is not

  568. angels he

  569. helps,

  570. but Abraham's

  571. descendants.

  572. Point three,

  573. Jesus became

  574. man to

  575. free us

  576. from the

  577. power of

  578. the devil

  579. and our

  580. fear of

  581. death.

  582. Death is the

  583. great taboo

  584. in our

  585. world.

  586. We'll talk

  587. about anything

  588. but no one

  589. wants to

  590. talk about

  591. death.

  592. 80% of

  593. all American

  594. health insurance

  595. is paid out

  596. to people in

  597. the last year

  598. of their

  599. lives.

  600. That it

  601. seems that

  602. when death

  603. comes we'll

  604. pull out all

  605. the stops

  606. and throw

  607. all the

  608. money we

  609. can at it

  610. because we

  611. don't want

  612. to die.

  613. As Woody Allen

  614. famously said,

  615. I'm not afraid

  616. to die, I

  617. just don't want

  618. to be there

  619. when it

  620. happens.

  621. That's true

  622. for all of

  623. us, I

  624. dare say.

  625. Death is the

  626. great taboo

  627. of our

  628. world.

  629. Death is

  630. one each

  631. and yet

  632. the fear

  633. of death,

  634. the fear

  635. of our

  636. day coming

  637. terrifies us.

  638. The world

  639. is terrified

  640. of death.

  641. And then

  642. these verses

  643. give us the

  644. perfect antidote

  645. to the

  646. power of

  647. death and

  648. the fear

  649. of death.

  650. Jesus,

  651. who's not

  652. ashamed to

  653. call us

  654. his brothers

  655. because he

  656. loves us.

  657. Then

  658. quotes Psalm

  659. 22 in

  660. Isaiah 8

  661. to make

  662. the point

  663. that he

  664. became like

  665. us.

  666. Before

  667. verse 14

  668. applying the

  669. significance,

  670. he became

  671. human so

  672. that by his

  673. death he

  674. might destroy

  675. death and

  676. the power of

  677. the devil who

  678. holds the

  679. power of

  680. death.

  681. He breaks

  682. us out.

  683. He frees

  684. us.

  685. Jesus died

  686. our death

  687. for us,

  688. meaning that

  689. we through

  690. faith in

  691. him need

  692. not fear

  693. death and

  694. need not

  695. eternally

  696. die.

  697. No one

  698. else has

  699. got an

  700. antidote to

  701. death except

  702. Jesus.

  703. Jesus

  704. shared our

  705. flesh and

  706. blood so

  707. that by his

  708. death, death

  709. might forever

  710. be defeated

  711. and death's

  712. puppet master

  713. the devil might

  714. be ultimately

  715. disarmed.

  716. death.

  717. He declares

  718. by his

  719. death that

  720. death is

  721. dead and

  722. the power of

  723. the devil is

  724. destroyed.

  725. Picture it

  726. like this.

  727. You're in the

  728. school playground

  729. and every day

  730. of your life

  731. two bullies

  732. make your life

  733. an absolute

  734. nightmare.

  735. One's called

  736. the devil and

  737. the other's

  738. called death.

  739. Every day you

  740. go and they

  741. ruin your life

  742. and they leave

  743. you cowering in

  744. fear.

  745. You go home

  746. in tears

  747. every day but

  748. the bullying

  749. never stops.

  750. And one

  751. day the

  752. terror campaign

  753. ends and how

  754. does the terror

  755. campaign end?

  756. Because our

  757. big brother

  758. Jesus comes

  759. into the

  760. playground for

  761. us and

  762. gives death

  763. and the devil

  764. such a beating

  765. that they

  766. cannot touch

  767. us anymore

  768. because now

  769. our death

  770. has been

  771. died for

  772. us and

  773. the one who

  774. holds the

  775. power of the

  776. fear of death

  777. has been

  778. destroyed

  779. forever.

  780. We sold

  781. ourselves

  782. we subjected

  783. ourselves to

  784. this bullying

  785. through our

  786. sin and yet

  787. Jesus comes

  788. and he

  789. destroys the

  790. power of

  791. death

  792. the fear

  793. of death

  794. and the devil

  795. who stands

  796. orchestrating it

  797. all.

  798. Jesus became

  799. man to die

  800. so that by

  801. his death

  802. death might be

  803. destroyed.

  804. No one else

  805. has got that.

  806. death.

  807. So the

  808. writer to

  809. the Hebrews

  810. is saying

  811. you forsake

  812. Jesus you

  813. subject yourselves

  814. again to

  815. death and

  816. you return to

  817. the fear that

  818. you need and

  819. have through

  820. Jesus.

  821. Only hope of

  822. escaping death

  823. is trusting that

  824. Jesus died for

  825. us.

  826. No Jesus

  827. only death.

  828. Lastly

  829. Jesus became

  830. man to atone

  831. for sin and

  832. help us to be

  833. holy.

  834. Look at

  835. verse 17.

  836. For this

  837. reason he

  838. had to be

  839. made like

  840. them fully

  841. human in

  842. every way in

  843. order that he

  844. might become a

  845. merciful and

  846. faithful high

  847. priest in the

  848. service of

  849. God and that

  850. he might make

  851. atonement for

  852. the sins of

  853. the people.

  854. Because he

  855. himself suffered

  856. when he was

  857. tempted he is

  858. able to help

  859. those who

  860. are tempted.

  861. Jesus became

  862. man to atone

  863. for sin and

  864. help us be

  865. holy.

  866. The significance

  867. of the high

  868. priest is that

  869. he is the one

  870. who stands for

  871. the people

  872. before God.

  873. He is the

  874. intermediary.

  875. He is the

  876. go-between.

  877. There's going

  878. to be way

  879. more detail

  880. about this in

  881. this letter.

  882. But in the

  883. Old Testament

  884. it's always

  885. unsatisfactory

  886. because the

  887. place of the

  888. high priest is

  889. a human.

  890. And a human

  891. standing before

  892. God on behalf

  893. of humans will

  894. always be

  895. unsatisfactory to

  896. bring the two

  897. together because

  898. he's so biased

  899. and fallen on

  900. the side of

  901. humanity.

  902. But then we

  903. get Jesus who

  904. is a better

  905. go-between.

  906. Why?

  907. Because he is

  908. fully God and

  909. fully human.

  910. So he is the

  911. perfect bridge in

  912. that gap.

  913. And therefore

  914. he's able to

  915. make atonement.

  916. That word

  917. atonement is

  918. literally at

  919. onement.

  920. He is able to

  921. bring two things

  922. separated by sin

  923. back together as

  924. one.

  925. By removing sin,

  926. by paying the

  927. ultimate sacrifice

  928. for sin,

  929. by crawling onto

  930. the altar

  931. himself.

  932. Therefore,

  933. he's able to

  934. be merciful to

  935. sinners whilst

  936. also being

  937. faithful to

  938. God.

  939. He is the

  940. perfect high

  941. priest.

  942. So in Jesus

  943. and only in

  944. Jesus,

  945. God and you

  946. can be brought

  947. back together.

  948. You can be at

  949. one where your

  950. sin has utterly

  951. formed a

  952. barrier.

  953. He deals

  954. with our

  955. sin,

  956. but see that

  957. it's not just

  958. something that

  959. he's done for

  960. us.

  961. It's something

  962. that he

  963. continually does

  964. for us.

  965. Verse 18,

  966. because he

  967. himself suffered

  968. when he was

  969. tempted,

  970. he is able to

  971. help those who

  972. were being

  973. tempted.

  974. Because Jesus

  975. became human,

  976. he knows all

  977. about temptation.

  978. He knows more

  979. about it than

  980. any of us

  981. because he was

  982. the one who

  983. never gave

  984. into it.

  985. And therefore

  986. he's able to

  987. help us,

  988. he's able to

  989. strengthen us,

  990. he's able to

  991. give grace to

  992. us,

  993. he's able to

  994. teach us how

  995. to resist when

  996. we're so readily

  997. and often

  998. tempted.

  999. And so I

  1000. don't know what

  1001. your New Year's

  1002. resolutions were,

  1003. dare say they're

  1004. in the bin

  1005. already.

  1006. But there are

  1007. some sins,

  1008. aren't there,

  1009. that we just

  1010. commit habitually.

  1011. We're going to

  1012. stop gossiping,

  1013. we're going to

  1014. stop using our

  1015. internet badly,

  1016. we're going to

  1017. stop being so

  1018. aggressive when we

  1019. drive.

  1020. we're going to

  1021. stop worshipping

  1022. money,

  1023. we're going to

  1024. stop twisting

  1025. and being

  1026. economical with

  1027. the truth.

  1028. I don't know

  1029. what it was.

  1030. But the truth

  1031. here is,

  1032. Jesus is able

  1033. to help us.

  1034. We're conscious

  1035. of these sins

  1036. year after year

  1037. after year and

  1038. we're never able

  1039. to break them.

  1040. But this says

  1041. Jesus is ready

  1042. and willing

  1043. and able to

  1044. help us.

  1045. So next time

  1046. you're going into

  1047. a situation where

  1048. you're tempted

  1049. to speak badly

  1050. of others in

  1051. order to make

  1052. yourself feel

  1053. better.

  1054. When you're

  1055. tempted to

  1056. gossip and

  1057. just relay

  1058. truth from the

  1059. grapevine

  1060. to diminish

  1061. others.

  1062. What about

  1063. praying?

  1064. Jesus, thank

  1065. you that you

  1066. always use your

  1067. words well.

  1068. Thank you that

  1069. you only told

  1070. the truth to

  1071. people, about

  1072. people, for

  1073. people, that you

  1074. only ever built

  1075. people up.

  1076. thank you that

  1077. now you're

  1078. using your

  1079. words really

  1080. well to pray

  1081. for me before

  1082. the Father.

  1083. And I'm going

  1084. into this

  1085. situation today

  1086. where I'm

  1087. tempted.

  1088. Where I'm

  1089. going to be

  1090. tempted to

  1091. speak badly

  1092. and just

  1093. join in

  1094. with everyone

  1095. else in the

  1096. banter.

  1097. Jesus, would

  1098. you give me

  1099. grace and

  1100. help so that

  1101. when I'm

  1102. tempted to do

  1103. that I might

  1104. be able to

  1105. withstand it as

  1106. you were able

  1107. to withstand it?

  1108. What if we

  1109. actually believe

  1110. that Jesus was

  1111. there to help

  1112. us?

  1113. As one who

  1114. knows what it

  1115. is to be

  1116. tempted,

  1117. withstood it

  1118. all, and

  1119. now stands

  1120. there ready to

  1121. help us when

  1122. we're tempted

  1123. to turn away.

  1124. You know, it's

  1125. a great truth

  1126. that Jesus

  1127. became man for

  1128. us.

  1129. No other

  1130. religion, no

  1131. other God has

  1132. got something

  1133. like this going

  1134. on.

  1135. A God who

  1136. is so

  1137. magnificent and

  1138. majestic.

  1139. He made

  1140. himself small,

  1141. crumpled

  1142. himself,

  1143. into human

  1144. history so

  1145. that we

  1146. might have

  1147. hope.

  1148. Jesus

  1149. becomes man

  1150. to give us

  1151. the absolute

  1152. essential and

  1153. only message of

  1154. salvation that

  1155. we must hear

  1156. and not drift

  1157. away from.

  1158. Jesus became

  1159. man to bring us

  1160. to glory because

  1161. we've fallen

  1162. short and are

  1163. utterly lost,

  1164. and yet he

  1165. brings us

  1166. through faith

  1167. in him.

  1168. Jesus became

  1169. man to free us

  1170. from death

  1171. and the power

  1172. of the devil.

  1173. No one else

  1174. is promising

  1175. that.

  1176. Jesus became

  1177. man to atone

  1178. for our sins

  1179. and be our

  1180. constant helper

  1181. in our pursuit

  1182. of holiness.

  1183. holiness.

  1184. And so he

  1185. writes,

  1186. love Jesus,

  1187. tie up tightly

  1188. to Jesus,

  1189. or else you'll

  1190. suffer loss

  1191. for everything.

  1192. Give up Jesus,

  1193. you give up

  1194. every hope,

  1195. every joy,

  1196. and every

  1197. comfort.

  1198. It's a wonderful

  1199. chapter,

  1200. one that exalts

  1201. Jesus to us,

  1202. one that's been a

  1203. joy to study this

  1204. week and highlighting

  1205. my absolute need

  1206. to stick in

  1207. and keep on

  1208. with Jesus

  1209. Christ.

  1210. Let me pray

  1211. and then we're

  1212. done.

  1213. Father God,

  1214. thank you that

  1215. Jesus became

  1216. man.

  1217. Thank you that

  1218. he gave up the

  1219. boundless glory of

  1220. heaven for us.

  1221. That he won

  1222. where we failed.

  1223. That he succeeded

  1224. where we gave up.

  1225. That he

  1226. persevered when

  1227. we tapped out.

  1228. Father,

  1229. thank you that

  1230. he is so

  1231. gracious to us.

  1232. He's so

  1233. understanding of

  1234. us.

  1235. He is the one

  1236. able to save

  1237. completely those

  1238. who come to

  1239. him in faith.

  1240. So Lord,

  1241. I pray for those

  1242. that do not

  1243. know Jesus.

  1244. Father,

  1245. may they trust

  1246. him as one

  1247. who knows

  1248. everything about

  1249. them and wants

  1250. to help and

  1251. to love forever.

  1252. Father,

  1253. I pray for those

  1254. who are tempted

  1255. to drift away.

  1256. Father,

  1257. I pray that

  1258. we might tie

  1259. up tightly

  1260. to Jesus

  1261. Christ and

  1262. know his

  1263. help and

  1264. comfort forever.

  1265. And Father,

  1266. I want to pray

  1267. for those that

  1268. are sticking in

  1269. with Jesus.

  1270. Father,

  1271. may we love

  1272. him more,

  1273. serve him

  1274. better and be

  1275. conformed to

  1276. his likeness.

  1277. More and more

  1278. we pray.

  1279. Father,

  1280. thank you so

  1281. much for Jesus

  1282. in whose name

  1283. we pray.

  1284. Amen.

  1285. that

  1286. and

  1287. we savior

  1288. so

  1289. as

  1290. we

  1291. do

  1292. have
