  1. I don't think I've actually struggled to write a talk as much as I have this one tonight.

  2. Friendship is, I think, a massive subject.

  3. I think as I've been thinking about it probably for the last three weeks,

  4. I'm conscious that it's a real blessing, isn't it, to have good friends.

  5. Everybody needs good friends.

  6. But also struck that friendship is very difficult.

  7. It's very difficult to try and nail what is a good friend.

  8. It's very difficult to keep good friends.

  9. Friendship is very difficult.

  10. So they say when it comes to Q&A and there's no questions, there's four options you can believe.

  11. Number one, everything was so clear that no one has any more questions to ask.

  12. Number two, it was so far above everyone's heads that they didn't understand anything

  13. and therefore have no limit to ask questions.

  14. Number three, it was so confused that people don't know where to start asking questions.

  15. Or number four, any of the above three that you like.

  16. There was a fourth, but I forgot it.

  17. So we'll just go for that one at the end.

  18. Yeah.

  19. Relationships.

  20. I have a PowerPoint to help us.

  21. Relationships.

  22. And tonight, authentic friendships.

  23. What is an authentic friendship?

  24. You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin to the bitter end.

  25. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours closer than you yourself keep it.

  26. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone and go off without a word.

  27. We are your friends, Frodo.

  28. Anyway, there it is.

  29. We know most of what Gandalf has told you.

  30. We know a good deal about the ring.

  31. We are horribly afraid.

  32. But we are coming with you or following you like hounds.

  33. That is what Merry Pippin and Samwise Gamgee say to Frodo just before he embarks on this great journey that will take three massive books in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

  34. It's a lovely quote, which I think gets us somewhere to thinking about what is the essence of true friendship.

  35. People with you through thick and thin who are prepared to face great adversity for you.

  36. And the only option that they don't leave him is that he's going to go to Mordor alone.

  37. Or on the Monday after Christmas, I was in Asda at the Jewel.

  38. Something I hate at the best of times, but the Monday after Christmas, horrendous.

  39. But over the tannoy came the song by the Rembrandts, I'll Be There For You, which was, of course, the theme tune to that great soap opera, Friends.

  40. And Friends, it's said, is always being shown somewhere in the world so popular was it.

  41. And as I was walking around Asda pushing my trolley, I was conscious that everybody was singing along.

  42. That this song has obviously captured people's imaginations.

  43. That when we think of Friends, we think of the Rembrandts and we think of this song, I'll Be There For You.

  44. When I think of that, I think of a very weird time at university where the very last episode of Friends where Ross and Rachel might finally get together.

  45. I was watching this program called Friends in a room full of strangers that I did not know.

  46. I was only there because somebody had a TV license and I didn't.

  47. It was very weird watching Friends around a group of strangers who, once the program was gone, everyone just disappeared.

  48. There was not even a cup of tea.

  49. It was most disappointing.

  50. Yet we are constantly aware in our lives that our friendships don't often live up to what the Hobbits describe,

  51. or that which was experienced and shown by Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe and Monica.

  52. In fact, in a recent study, Britain was shown to be the loneliness capital of Europe.

  53. It came 28th out of 28 countries that people in Britain are lonelier than anybody else in Europe.

  54. It was measured on people in Britain are the least likely to know their neighbors and the least likely to have anybody they would describe as a good friend.

  55. We come absolutely bottom.

  56. Let's bear in mind, some of that is Eastern Europe and I don't find those people the friendliest.

  57. And we come bottom.

  58. And let's also be clear that we're in Edinburgh, which has this reputation of being cold and a little bit austere,

  59. far in contrast to our dear countrymen through in the West.

  60. It's true that anything good, anything bad can be wonderful with friends and almost anything good can be terrible without them.

  61. Yet we live in a society where friendship is minimized, it takes a back seat,

  62. and it comes a country mile behind the way we pedestal romantic love and family love.

  63. No one ever buys a glossy magazine on a Saturday to find out who's friends with it.

  64. Because we're so geared, we're so honed in looking at romantic love and family love.

  65. And so pedestalling that, that friendship comes a long way behind.

  66. In days gone by, it was said, friendship seemed to be the happiest, most fully human of all loves.

  67. The crown of life and the school of virtue.

  68. To the modern person, friendship is diminished and largely disregarded.

  69. I realized this week that in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this central love between Arwen and Aragon doesn't even make it into Tolkien's proper book.

  70. It's always in the appendix.

  71. It's only when Peter Jackson and Hollywood get a hold of it that they put this romance right at the center

  72. because they don't think to the 21st century audience that friendship will be able to hold the story together.

  73. Isn't it interesting?

  74. How what Tolkien wrote needs to be reinterpreted and reinvented for our 21st century diminished.

  75. Diminishment of friendship, um, eyes.

  76. Even in the Christian world, friendship is the most important, least talked about relationship in the church.

  77. I've never given a talk on friendship before, that might be obvious already.

  78. It's not something I've particularly thought of very much.

  79. But I was also stunned how few books have been written on friendship.

  80. I think this is perhaps the first sermon I've ever preached where I think I've read a vast majority of all the books written on a subject.

  81. And I'm still pretty clueless about how to do a talk or how to tell people about friendship.

  82. Yet despite it being detrimentally overlooked, we all know, feel, understand and yearn to be good at choosing, forging and keeping terrific friendships.

  83. Put your hand up if you think you've got lots of too many good friends.

  84. Put your hand up if you'd like a few more good friends.

  85. I certainly would.

  86. We all feel the need, the yearning.

  87. We all know the benefit and blessing of having good friends.

  88. On a church level, I think it is accurate to estimate that church satisfaction is gauged on two planes.

  89. Number one, the quality of the teaching ministries and services of the church.

  90. Do you like what the church does?

  91. And number two, I think we assess our satisfaction with church with the ability we have to forge good friendships within that body of people.

  92. If we have appreciation for the ministries and we have friendships with the people, we'll be satisfied, I think, generally in church.

  93. So therefore, friendship for us and in our church is extremely important.

  94. What will make our church stronger is if we're better friends and have deeper fellowship one with another.

  95. C.S. Lewis in his book, The Four Loves, which is a cracking book, which I think everyone should really read.

  96. He writes a chapter on friendship.

  97. And his chapter on friendship is basically about the weirdness of friendship, the otherness of friendship.

  98. He writes, friendship is, in a sense, the least natural of loves, the least instinctive, biological, gregarious and necessary.

  99. Without eros, romantic love, none of us would have been born.

  100. Without affection, familial love, none of us would have been reared.

  101. But we can live and breed without friendship.

  102. Friendship is unnecessary.

  103. Like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself, for God did not need to create.

  104. It has no survival value.

  105. Rather, it is one of the things that gives value to survival.

  106. It is one of the things that enriches our lives.

  107. As a 12th century Cistercian monk, I told you that there's very few books on friendship.

  108. This is about one of six.

  109. And he writes a book on friendship and he says that there are three different types of friendship that we experience.

  110. They're at different levels, at different depths.

  111. And as we go deeper, they get fewer.

  112. He says the first one is we have a carnal friendship.

  113. And he would describe a carnal friendship as people whom we mutually pursue pleasure with.

  114. People whom we mutually pursue pleasure with.

  115. People we hang around for the sake of mutual fun.

  116. And I dare say we've all got friends like that.

  117. Then he talks about worldly friendships.

  118. Friendships that people maintain because it brings mutual advantage.

  119. So this might be friendships in the workplace.

  120. If you are friends with your workmates, it will go better for you at work.

  121. It might be your teammates.

  122. If you're friends with your teammates and are looking out for them and ready to do things for them,

  123. then that will only have benefit to the scoreline at the end of the game.

  124. But he says the third type of friendship, the deepest type of friendship is a friendship bounded, grounded in mutual commitment.

  125. Where you think the same as the other person.

  126. Where you start sharing about your life and they go, oh, that's how I view the world.

  127. That's what I think.

  128. Oh, you too.

  129. I thought I was the only one.

  130. There is a mutual foundation.

  131. A set of core beliefs.

  132. A common pursuit which binds people together.

  133. And Aelred of Reveaux would say that was the deepest kind of friendship.

  134. And obviously he's then going to go on and explain that friendship between Christians,

  135. where they're bound together in their mutual pursuit of Jesus Christ,

  136. is the most conducive foundation to build strong, deep, rich and fruitful friendships.

  137. He writes,

  138. That actually Jesus is a wonderful person in enabling others to forge deep and rich and good friendships.

  139. So a great goal in all our friendships is to make them spiritual friendships.

  140. By deepening and centering our friendships with Christians on Jesus,

  141. and by pursuing and being great friends to non-Christians,

  142. in order that they might trust Jesus themselves,

  143. so you can pursue him together.

  144. Last bit of wiggling on the T.

  145. Augustine writes in his Confessions,

  146. Many people, Aelred and Augustine, both say that Jesus is a wonderful starting point

  147. for building and maintaining and growing friendships.

  148. But it seems pertinent then to distinguish the difference between fellowship and friendship.

  149. They are very different.

  150. Fellowship might be described as that special sense of companionship

  151. and love among believers based on our unity in Christ.

  152. That's what fellowship is.

  153. That is, all those that know and love and have trusted the Lord Jesus,

  154. we're brought together as family.

  155. That in Jesus we're not only reconciled to God,

  156. but we're reconciled to each other.

  157. There's a family bond.

  158. I know, I'm sure we've all felt this,

  159. where you're in a foreign place,

  160. you meet a Christian brother or sister,

  161. and after a little while you feel like you've known them their whole life.

  162. So one of the wonderful fruits of the gospel.

  163. It's a wonderful thing, fellowship,

  164. and fellowship intrinsically paves the way towards spiritual friendship.

  165. Friendship, therefore, in a spiritual sense,

  166. is that fellowship taken to the next level

  167. and applied more personally,

  168. given added depth, refinement and detail

  169. through active investment in one another's life.

  170. So we have fellowship altogether,

  171. but it's going to take investment.

  172. It's going to take spending time.

  173. It's going to take sacrificing.

  174. It's going to take hanging out.

  175. It's going to take us encouraging each other

  176. and spurring each other on in our pursuit of Jesus

  177. if that fellowship is going to deepen

  178. and become deep, rewarding fellowship.

  179. So this evening I want to talk about friendship

  180. in just three quick titles.

  181. The why of friendship.

  182. Why do we need friends?

  183. The what of friendship.

  184. What are good things to look for in friends.

  185. How can we be good friends?

  186. And then the how of friendship.

  187. If friendship is so difficult,

  188. does the Bible have anything to show us or tell us

  189. or teach us about how to make it a little bit easier?

  190. So, the why of friendship.

  191. Why do I, why do you, why do we

  192. have a deep-seated yearning to have friends?

  193. Where does that come from?

  194. Why can't we just say that every man is an island

  195. and I am Ibiza?

  196. Why do we need to have this connectedness?

  197. Well, I think the Bible's clear answer

  198. is that friendship starts before the beginning.

  199. Friendship starts before the beginning.

  200. In Genesis 1.26,

  201. God said,

  202. let us make man in our image,

  203. in our likeness.

  204. Note those plurals.

  205. God talking to himself in plurality.

  206. That even before the beginning,

  207. God exists in trinity.

  208. That God forever

  209. has been one God in three persons.

  210. who forever exists in and of himself

  211. in a loving friendship.

  212. God is intrinsically community.

  213. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  214. And it is in this image that we're created.

  215. This relational image.

  216. The image of the eternal relational God.

  217. God.

  218. So by the time we get to chapter 2.18,

  219. and us getting a few more details

  220. about how Adam and Eve were created,

  221. we read that the first not good thing

  222. about Adam and creation

  223. is that he is alone.

  224. He has no one to relate to.

  225. Just imagine being Adam in the Garden of Eden.

  226. He has the best quiet time.

  227. 24 hours a day.

  228. He has unhindered access to God.

  229. We read in chapter 3

  230. that they used to walk together

  231. in the coolness of the day.

  232. What a beautiful picture of friendship that is.

  233. And yet the first not good thing

  234. and in other ways perfect creation

  235. is the aloneness of man.

  236. There is no one like him

  237. whom he can be a friend to,

  238. he can relate to,

  239. he can share with.

  240. Part of being image bearers of God

  241. is to pursue, develop, nurture,

  242. and maintain human relationships.

  243. Therefore,

  244. friendless living is both

  245. a rejection of God's good purpose for us

  246. as his image bearers,

  247. and also a dehumanizing tragedy.

  248. That as humans made in his image,

  249. one of the things that

  250. marks that image bearing out

  251. is our ability

  252. to maintain and grow

  253. and have friends.

  254. So no wonder when Eve shows up

  255. in 2.22,

  256. Adam knows friendship

  257. and the not goodness

  258. of that creation

  259. becomes very good.

  260. Because suddenly Adam

  261. can be fully human

  262. as the image bearer of God.

  263. Adam even sings a song.

  264. I'm not sure it translates that well.

  265. He says,

  266. this is bone of my bone

  267. and flesh of my flesh.

  268. I think if I sung that to Aileen,

  269. she'd look at me a bit weird.

  270. But,

  271. but the eye of Adam

  272. now becomes an ass

  273. and a wee.

  274. And there are they together.

  275. That they are

  276. interacting together.

  277. They are sharing

  278. together.

  279. That as image bearers of God,

  280. when Adam and Eve

  281. can share and be friends together,

  282. they reflect God's image

  283. better than Adam ever could

  284. alone.

  285. But this picture

  286. of completeness

  287. is then shattered

  288. categorically

  289. at the fall in Genesis 3.

  290. The usual evening stroll

  291. with God

  292. in the coolness of the day

  293. is forsaken

  294. for running,

  295. hiding,

  296. and isolation

  297. from the Creator.

  298. Sin has spoiled

  299. man's friendship

  300. with God vertically.

  301. And as we read,

  302. as Adam goes on

  303. this self-justifying exercise

  304. in Genesis 3 verse 10,

    Genesis 3:10

  305. when he said,

  306. it's the woman's fault.

  307. It's this woman

  308. that you gave me.

  309. He then ceases

  310. to be a we and a they.

  311. He becomes an eye.

  312. And that friendship,

  313. that relationship

  314. is tarnished forever.

  315. A fracture of relationship

  316. at Genesis 3

  317. and a fissure of friendship

  318. is now seemingly

  319. irreparably forged

  320. at the core

  321. of fallen humanity.

  322. That when sin shows up,

  323. friendship becomes

  324. more difficult.

  325. Martin Luther observes

  326. that sin curves us

  327. inward on ourselves

  328. and left unaddressed

  329. causes us to become

  330. increasingly self-focused.

  331. Nowhere is this more poisonous

  332. than in our friendships.

  333. And don't we see it

  334. that when I becomes big,

  335. friendship becomes difficult.

  336. When I am self-obsessed,

  337. it inhibits my ability

  338. to be other person focused.

  339. And so readily we get

  340. what's the definition

  341. of a boring person,

  342. somebody who talks

  343. about themselves

  344. when you really want

  345. to talk about yourself.

  346. And we start

  347. to evaluate friendships.

  348. We interact with someone

  349. and we think,

  350. do they like me?

  351. What do they think of me?

  352. Will they hurt me?

  353. How can I make them

  354. like me more?

  355. Not that any of these

  356. questions are wrong,

  357. but it's amazing

  358. how me-focused friendship

  359. can so readily become

  360. as fallen human beings

  361. in a fallen world.

  362. And so this side

  363. of the fourth,

  364. friendship is difficult.

  365. Friendship is hard.

  366. Friendship is tough.

  367. But still,

  368. as image bearers,

  369. it is intrinsically worthwhile.

  370. Friendship with God

  371. is hard as holiness

  372. and sinfulness

  373. cannot coexist.

  374. In the Old Testament,

  375. as far as I can see,

  376. there's only two people

  377. that are explicitly described

  378. as friends of God.

  379. Moses in Exodus 33,

  380. the Lord would speak

  381. to Moses face to face

  382. as one would speak

  383. to a friend.

  384. And also Abraham

  385. in Isaiah 41,

  386. also picked up in James 2.

  387. But you, Israel,

  388. my servant,

  389. Jacob,

  390. whom I have chosen,

  391. you descendants

  392. of Abraham,

  393. my friend.

  394. It's not just friendship

  395. with God that is affected,

  396. tarnished,

  397. and inhibited,

  398. but also friendship

  399. with others.

  400. So Proverbs 20,

    Proverbs 20:6

  401. verse 6,

  402. many claim to have

  403. unfailing love,

  404. but a faithful person,

  405. a faithful friend,

  406. who can find?

  407. Why is friendship important?

  408. Because as those created

  409. in God's image,

  410. we are hardwired

  411. for friendship.

  412. Friendship with God

  413. and friendship with others.

  414. But due to the fall,

  415. friendship is now hard,

  416. messy,

  417. and spoiled by sin,

  418. though still absolutely necessary,

  419. and the longing for it

  420. ever present

  421. in everyone's lives.

  422. And yet God's plan

  423. of salvation

  424. is designed

  425. to restore

  426. our vertical relationship

  427. with God,

  428. as well as our horizontal

  429. relationships with others.

  430. Why friendship?

  431. Because that's how

  432. God designed us.

  433. But what about

  434. the what of friendship?

  435. What do good friendships do?

  436. What are some marks

  437. of authentic friendship?

  438. What can I do

  439. to be a true friend?

  440. Well, I was encouraged

  441. to see that the Bible

  442. had more to say on this

  443. than you'd believe.

  444. And there's one book

  445. in particular

  446. that has loads to say

  447. on friendship,

  448. the book of Proverbs.

  449. Hugh Black

  450. in a classic work

  451. says,

  452. the book of Proverbs

  453. might almost be called

  454. a treatise on friendship.

  455. So full is it

  456. of advice

  457. about the sort of person

  458. you should consult with

  459. and the sort of person

  460. you should avoid.

  461. It is full of shrewd,

  462. prudent,

  463. and wise counsel.

  464. There is no book

  465. that so exalts

  466. the idea of friendship

  467. and is so anxious

  468. to have it truly valued

  469. and carefully kept.

  470. Proverbs gives us

  471. practical wisdom

  472. on how to live skillfully

  473. in the world,

  474. how to live well.

  475. And it says three big things

  476. about friends.

  477. Number one,

  478. true friends are rare.

  479. Many claim to have

  480. unfailing love,

  481. but a faithful person

  482. who can fight.

  483. The writers of Proverbs

  484. would also say,

  485. bad friends bring ruin.

  486. Proverbs 22,

  487. make no friendship

  488. with a man given to anger,

  489. nor go with a wrathful man,

  490. lest you learn his ways

  491. and entangle yourself

  492. in a snare.

  493. But the Proverbs

  494. would also say,

  495. friends are integral

  496. to gaining wisdom.

  497. This famous proverb,

  498. iron sharpens iron

  499. as one man sharpens another.

  500. That is,

  501. we interact and share together.

  502. Good friendships

  503. make us sharper

  504. and better.

  505. Proverbs goes further,

  506. though,

  507. and paints a very vivid picture

  508. of what good friends

  509. look like.

  510. I think Proverbs

  511. gives us four foundations,

  512. four building blocks

  513. of true friendships.

  514. Here they are.

  515. True friendships,

  516. true friends are there,

  517. they are aware,

  518. they dare,

  519. and they share.

  520. Perhaps we might say

  521. that together,

  522. stop us drifting off.

  523. True friends are there,

  524. they are aware,

  525. they dare,

  526. and they share.

  527. Let me explain

  528. what I mean.

  529. Firstly,

  530. true friends are there,

  531. they are constant,

  532. they are with you

  533. for better,

  534. for worse,

  535. they are like the hobbits,

  536. as they relate to Frodo,

  537. we're coming with you

  538. no matter what.

  539. They are in the ups and downs,

  540. in the triumphs,

  541. the trials,

  542. and the tribulations.

  543. Proverbs 17,

    Proverbs 17:17

  544. verse 17,

  545. 17,

  546. a friend loves at all times,

  547. and a brother is born

  548. for adversity.

  549. A man of friends,

  550. Proverbs 18,

  551. a man of many companions

  552. may come to ruin,

  553. but there is a friend

  554. who sticks closer

  555. than a brother.

  556. This is written in a society

  557. where family

  558. is of paramount importance.

  559. And so for the writer

  560. of this Proverbs

  561. to say there is a friend

  562. that is better

  563. than a brother

  564. is shocking.

  565. But I think it is

  566. very wise.

  567. There is a friend,

  568. a good friend,

  569. good friends

  570. can be better

  571. than brothers.

  572. Why?

  573. Because in adversity,

  574. family members

  575. out of loyalty

  576. may lend you a hand.

  577. They're almost expected to.

  578. But they may not like you.

  579. Whereas a friend,

  580. voluntarily compelled

  581. by love,

  582. says I'm sticking with you.

  583. I'm sticking.

  584. This word sticks

  585. is the Hebrew word cleaves.

  586. It is a commitment

  587. out of steadfast love

  588. that friends give

  589. voluntarily to others.

  590. Proverbs lists examples

  591. of fair-weather friends,

  592. not the friends you want.

  593. Friendships that are there

  594. in the good times,

  595. but scarper.

  596. I know you're all

  597. my good friends

  598. because you came out

  599. on a night like tonight.

  600. Whereas the fair-weather friends

  601. thought it was a little cold

  602. and a little wet.

  603. Proverbs 19,

  604. wealth brings many new friends,

  605. but a poor man

  606. is deserted by his friends.

  607. Proverbs 14,

  608. the poor is disliked

  609. by his neighbor,

  610. but the rich

  611. has many friends.

  612. Fair-weather friends

  613. are only in

  614. for the benefit

  615. they can glean

  616. for themselves.

  617. If you want an example

  618. of that,

  619. the prodigal son.

  620. He spends all his father's

  621. inheritance,

  622. he's surrounded

  623. by loads of people.

  624. When it runs out,

  625. he quickly finds himself

  626. alone in the pigsty

  627. because he's just got

  628. fair-weather friends.

  629. True friends are there,

  630. they are committed,

  631. they're constant.

  632. They're there

  633. when the chips are down

  634. and also when the ship

  635. comes in.

  636. True friends are

  637. there.

  638. But they are also

  639. aware.

  640. They're careful

  641. with you.

  642. They know you

  643. and they know

  644. how you feel.

  645. They are emotionally

  646. connected

  647. and they get you.

  648. They get you.

  649. Proverbs highlights

  650. very powerfully

  651. the danger of people

  652. and friends

  653. that are not aware,

  654. who speak

  655. unthinkingly,

  656. behave unsympathetically

  657. and act

  658. uncompassionately.

  659. So Proverbs 26,

  660. like a madman

  661. who throws firebrands,

  662. arrows and death,

  663. is the man

  664. who deceives his neighbor

  665. and says,

  666. I am only joking.

  667. Proverbs 27,

  668. whoever blesses his neighbor

  669. with a loud voice

  670. rising early in the morning

  671. will be counted

  672. as cursing.

  673. Proverbs 25,

  674. whoever sings songs

  675. to a heavy heart

  676. is like one

  677. who takes off

  678. a garment

  679. on a cold day

  680. and like vinegar

  681. on soda.

  682. Proverbs 25,

  683. let your foot

  684. be seldom

  685. in your neighbor's house,

  686. lest he have his fill

  687. of you

  688. and hate you.

  689. The common threads

  690. of all of these Proverbs

  691. is that these people

  692. are not connected.

  693. They don't have

  694. the emotional savvy

  695. to work out

  696. what is really

  697. going on.

  698. So,

  699. in the first one,

  700. there's the individual

  701. who plays a trick,

  702. who maybe is sarcastic,

  703. but he doesn't know

  704. you well enough

  705. to know how

  706. you're going to take it.

  707. So,

  708. when it all goes badly,

  709. they just go,

  710. I'm only joking.

  711. So,

  712. we know that

  713. many a true statement

  714. is hidden in jest.

  715. They're not careful

  716. with you.

  717. They're not aware

  718. of what makes you tick.

  719. Or the man

  720. who has good intentions

  721. of blessing his neighbor,

  722. but has not thought

  723. that his early morning

  724. hollering on the garden lawn

  725. might be detrimental

  726. to his sleep.

  727. It's a good intention,

  728. but he's not connected.

  729. Or singing songs,

  730. these are intrinsically

  731. joy-filled songs,

  732. singing joy-filled songs

  733. to the man

  734. with a heavy heart.

  735. Someone crippled

  736. with sadness

  737. doesn't want you

  738. to start the chorus,

  739. I'm H-A-P-P-Y,

  740. I'm H-A-P-P-Y,

  741. I know I am,

  742. I'm sure I am,

  743. I'm H-A-P-P-Y,

  744. it's insensitive.

  745. Or the person

  746. who doesn't know

  747. when to leave.

  748. He's not connected enough

  749. to know when they've

  750. maybe outstayed

  751. their welcome.

  752. Let your foot

  753. be seldom

  754. in your neighbor's house

  755. lest he has his fill

  756. of you and hate you.

  757. True friends

  758. are aware.

  759. They're emotionally

  760. connected

  761. and they care

  762. about what is done

  763. and said

  764. and how it's going

  765. to impact you.

  766. They're careful.

  767. There's an emotional

  768. connectedness.

  769. Thirdly,

  770. I think proverbs

  771. say they dare.

  772. And I think

  773. this balances

  774. perfectly

  775. with the awareness

  776. points.

  777. It's not that

  778. they just tread

  779. on eggshells

  780. around you,

  781. but they're not

  782. going to hurt you

  783. unnecessarily.

  784. that true friends

  785. do tell people

  786. what they need

  787. to hear

  788. for their

  789. good.

  790. They're emotionally

  791. connected to you

  792. so they're entering

  793. into this problem

  794. with you.

  795. But they do love

  796. you enough

  797. to tell you.

  798. Haven't we

  799. so often thought,

  800. oh, we can't

  801. tell them that

  802. because we love

  803. them.

  804. But what we're

  805. really saying is

  806. we love ourselves

  807. so much that we

  808. don't want to put

  809. ourselves through

  810. the emotional

  811. ordeal of having

  812. to tell people

  813. perhaps things

  814. that they don't

  815. want to hear.

  816. True friends

  817. don't do it in

  818. a vindictive way

  819. to harm,

  820. but in a loving

  821. way to help.

  822. There is a

  823. candidness

  824. amongst true

  825. friends.

  826. Say Proverbs

    Proverbs 27:5

  827. 27 verse 5,

  828. better is open

  829. rebuke than

  830. hidden love.

  831. Better to

  832. confront people

  833. with the truth

  834. they need to

  835. hear than

  836. cover it over

  837. in an act of

  838. self-preservation

  839. and conceal

  840. seal that you

  841. love them.

  842. Proverbs

  843. 27,

  844. faithful are

  845. the wounds

  846. of a friend,

  847. profuse are

  848. the kisses

  849. of an enemy.

  850. Proverbs

  851. 28,

  852. whoever rebukes

  853. a man will

  854. afterward find

  855. more favor than

  856. he who flutters

  857. with his tongue.

  858. Good friends

  859. are not yes

  860. men.

  861. Good friends

  862. are people out

  863. of love for you,

  864. want the best

  865. for you,

  866. and are

  867. therefore prepared

  868. to share what

  869. might otherwise

  870. be difficult.

  871. Someone famously

  872. quoted,

  873. true friends

  874. stab you in

  875. the front.

  876. Fourthly and

  877. finally,

  878. true friends

  879. are there,

  880. they are aware,

  881. they dare,

  882. and they

  883. share.

  884. There is a

  885. transparency

  886. to true

  887. friendship.

  888. There is a

  889. sharing of

  890. life.

  891. There's not a

  892. stiff upper lip,

  893. rubbing shoulders,

  894. this far but

  895. no further,

  896. there's an

  897. openness.

  898. You can

  899. share with

  900. them,

  901. they can

  902. share with

  903. you.

  904. There's a

  905. two-way

  906. transaction

  907. going.

  908. Don't we

  909. find it so

  910. disarming

  911. when somebody

  912. shares their

  913. problems,

  914. and suddenly

  915. we think,

  916. oh, I

  917. could share

  918. my problems.

  919. Proverbs

    Proverbs 27:9

  920. 27,

  921. verse 9,

  922. oil and

  923. perfume make

  924. the heart

  925. glad,

  926. and the

  927. sweetness of

  928. a friend

  929. comes from

  930. his earnest

  931. counsel,

  932. his earnest

  933. counsel,

  934. his heartfelt

  935. openness.

  936. He lists two

  937. things that are

  938. incredibly precious,

  939. oil and

  940. perfume,

  941. and he says

  942. when somebody

  943. shares of

  944. themselves with

  945. you,

  946. that's equally

  947. as precious,

  948. if not more.

  949. That in true

  950. friendship,

  951. there's a

  952. profound

  953. openness,

  954. a deep

  955. sharing of

  956. life that

  957. is incredibly

  958. precious.

  959. To have

  960. friends with

  961. whom you

  962. can share

  963. your toughest

  964. predicaments

  965. and darkest

  966. secrets in

  967. confidence and

  968. safety in

  969. order to gain

  970. help,

  971. support,

  972. assistance,

  973. and

  974. accountability

  975. is incredibly

  976. precious.

  977. If we have

  978. people who

  979. are like that

  980. for us,

  981. we are truly

  982. blessed people,

  983. and it's

  984. something we

  985. all need,

  986. so we've

  987. all got to

  988. work at it.

  989. Proverbs

  990. 25 gives

  991. us the flip

  992. side,

  993. argue your

  994. case with

  995. your neighbor

  996. and do

  997. not reveal

  998. another

  999. secret,

  1000. lest he

  1001. who hears

  1002. you bring

  1003. shame upon

  1004. you,

  1005. and your

  1006. ill repute

  1007. have no

  1008. end.

  1009. Someone who's

  1010. not transparent

  1011. with their

  1012. own life,

  1013. but absorbs

  1014. other secrets

  1015. and then

  1016. openly shares

  1017. them with

  1018. everyone else,

  1019. and it's

  1020. incredibly

  1021. hurtful,

  1022. incredibly

  1023. dangerous,

  1024. and as we

  1025. betray the

  1026. trust of

  1027. others,

  1028. no one

  1029. will trust

  1030. us.

  1031. Like people

  1032. that criticize

  1033. people all

  1034. the time,

  1035. I find

  1036. myself so

  1037. ready for

  1038. them,

  1039. so readily

  1040. disposed to

  1041. them,

  1042. that actually

  1043. if you

  1044. criticize two

  1045. people,

  1046. they think,

  1047. well, when I'm

  1048. not in the

  1049. room,

  1050. they must

  1051. criticize me.

  1052. We're very

  1053. caged towards

  1054. our friendship,

  1055. and people's

  1056. track record

  1057. really does

  1058. have an

  1059. impact on

  1060. whether we

  1061. trust them

  1062. or not.

  1063. So Proverbs

  1064. says,

  1065. good friends

  1066. are marked

  1067. by these

  1068. four qualities.

  1069. Good friends

  1070. are there,

  1071. they're constant,

  1072. they're aware,

  1073. they're careful,

  1074. they dare,

  1075. they're candid,

  1076. and they share.

  1077. There's a

  1078. counsel,

  1079. there's an

  1080. openness.

  1081. If you want

  1082. two instead

  1083. of four,

  1084. Tim Keller

  1085. comes up with

  1086. these,

  1087. good friends

  1088. always let

  1089. you in

  1090. and never

  1091. let you

  1092. down.

  1093. Good friends

  1094. always let

  1095. you in

  1096. and never

  1097. let you

  1098. down.

  1099. I don't

  1100. know how

  1101. you respond

  1102. to those

  1103. four things.

  1104. Are you

  1105. someone who

  1106. is there,

  1107. who's aware,

  1108. who shares,

  1109. and who's

  1110. daring?

  1111. As I

  1112. responded to

  1113. these four

  1114. things,

  1115. let me tell

  1116. you what

  1117. hit me.

  1118. The first

  1119. is this,

  1120. a real

  1121. longing.

  1122. I became

  1123. conscious of

  1124. both my

  1125. lack of

  1126. and need

  1127. for

  1128. good

  1129. friends.

  1130. True

  1131. friends like

  1132. this.

  1133. I'd say

  1134. I'd have a

  1135. lot of

  1136. acquaintances,

  1137. very few

  1138. really good

  1139. friends.

  1140. It's a sad

  1141. fact of life

  1142. that friends

  1143. are harder

  1144. to make

  1145. the older

  1146. you get.

  1147. School

  1148. was easy.

  1149. Conquers

  1150. seem to be

  1151. this perfect

  1152. thing for

  1153. making

  1154. friends

  1155. kick

  1156. around the

  1157. football

  1158. field.

  1159. University

  1160. quite

  1161. simple,

  1162. work

  1163. harder,

  1164. unless you

  1165. invite your

  1166. friends to

  1167. come and

  1168. work with

  1169. you.

  1170. I dare

  1171. say the

  1172. trajectory

  1173. continues into

  1174. later life.

  1175. Friends are

  1176. harder the

  1177. older we

  1178. get.

  1179. Also,

  1180. that friendships

  1181. are taken

  1182. away faster

  1183. than we can

  1184. forge them.

  1185. Making

  1186. really good

  1187. friends takes

  1188. time and

  1189. people's

  1190. mobility makes

  1191. forging good

  1192. friends difficult

  1193. with work and

  1194. opportunity taking

  1195. people away

  1196. the minute you

  1197. think you're just

  1198. on the cusp of

  1199. good friendships.

  1200. Time

  1201. pressures.

  1202. Friendship takes

  1203. time and we

  1204. live in a world

  1205. that is so

  1206. frantically busy

  1207. and hectic.

  1208. And the

  1209. pedestalling of

  1210. family life,

  1211. the protection

  1212. of time

  1213. inhibit our

  1214. friendships,

  1215. the deception

  1216. of Facebook,

  1217. he knew it

  1218. was coming,

  1219. the deception

  1220. of Facebook

  1221. and social

  1222. media and

  1223. email that

  1224. deceive us

  1225. into thinking

  1226. we have a

  1227. broad matrix

  1228. of spectacular

  1229. friendships,

  1230. when really

  1231. we have a

  1232. disconnected list

  1233. of strangers,

  1234. well-wishipping

  1235. acquaintances,

  1236. all in place

  1237. of flesh and

  1238. blood face-to-face

  1239. friendships.

  1240. We also spend

  1241. a lot of time

  1242. on one-way

  1243. friendships,

  1244. where we

  1245. expend emotional

  1246. energy as we

  1247. bond with

  1248. sports stars,

  1249. actors and

  1250. other icons,

  1251. or reducing

  1252. our ability

  1253. to make good

  1254. friends.

  1255. All these

  1256. things,

  1257. though maybe

  1258. increasing the

  1259. quantity of

  1260. our relationships,

  1261. definitely

  1262. reduce the

  1263. quality of

  1264. our friendships.

  1265. So as I

  1266. thought of

  1267. what is a

  1268. true friend,

  1269. I had a

  1270. real longing

  1271. to have

  1272. better friends,

  1273. not that my

  1274. friends are not

  1275. good friends,

  1276. but to have

  1277. deeper friends

  1278. and stronger

  1279. friendships.

  1280. Secondly,

  1281. as well as a

  1282. sense of

  1283. longing,

  1284. this study in

  1285. true friendship

  1286. created a sense

  1287. of conviction.

  1288. It revealed that

  1289. I am not always

  1290. a very good

  1291. friend,

  1292. and I think

  1293. as a general

  1294. rule of thumb,

  1295. good friends

  1296. have good

  1297. friends.

  1298. people that

  1299. are there,

  1300. who share,

  1301. who dare,

  1302. who are

  1303. aware,

  1304. find that

  1305. there's other

  1306. people in

  1307. their lives

  1308. who do

  1309. the same

  1310. for them.

  1311. So it

  1312. is, I

  1313. think,

  1314. as I go

  1315. on from

  1316. here with

  1317. God's help,

  1318. I seek to

  1319. exhibit these

  1320. qualities to

  1321. others,

  1322. that a

  1323. hope will

  1324. find them

  1325. reciprocated to

  1326. me and my

  1327. friendships

  1328. deepened.

  1329. we need

  1330. to raise

  1331. the bar

  1332. of friendship.

  1333. So many

  1334. of us are

  1335. looking for

  1336. people around

  1337. whom we

  1338. can be

  1339. ourselves,

  1340. but the

  1341. true genius

  1342. of true

  1343. friendship is

  1344. that true

  1345. friends make

  1346. us better

  1347. than

  1348. ourselves.

  1349. People that

  1350. are always

  1351. encouraging us,

  1352. particularly in a

  1353. Christian sense,

  1354. people that are

  1355. always encouraging

  1356. us to pursue

  1357. Jesus more.

  1358. Proverbs 13

    Proverbs 13:20

  1359. verse 20,

  1360. whoever walks

  1361. with the wise

  1362. becomes wise,

  1363. but the

  1364. companion of

  1365. fools will

  1366. suffer harm.

  1367. Which brings

  1368. us into land

  1369. on the how

  1370. of friendship.

  1371. How can we

  1372. be better

  1373. friends?

  1374. Well, the

  1375. answer, I

  1376. think, is that

  1377. universal Sunday

  1378. school answer,

  1379. Jesus.

  1380. Some remarkable

  1381. things about

  1382. Jesus.

  1383. They crucify him

  1384. because he's

  1385. friends with the

  1386. wrong people.

  1387. Always being

  1388. told, why are

  1389. you friends with

  1390. them?

  1391. Why are you

  1392. hanging out with

  1393. sinners and tax

  1394. collectors?

  1395. Why are you

  1396. their friends?

  1397. Jesus known as

  1398. the friend of

  1399. sinners.

  1400. Jesus who's

  1401. open, who

  1402. shares his

  1403. life, who

  1404. tells people

  1405. what they

  1406. really need

  1407. to hear,

  1408. who is very

  1409. careful with

  1410. people.

  1411. In John 15,

  1412. something remarkable

  1413. happens.

  1414. This is my

  1415. commandment,

  1416. that you love

  1417. one another as

  1418. I have loved

  1419. you.

  1420. Greater love

  1421. is no one

  1422. than this,

  1423. that someone

  1424. lay down his

  1425. life for his

  1426. friends.

  1427. You are my

  1428. friends, if you

  1429. do what I

  1430. command you.

  1431. No longer do

  1432. I call you

  1433. servants, for

  1434. the servant

  1435. does not know

  1436. his master is

  1437. doing.

  1438. But I have

  1439. called you

  1440. friends, for

  1441. all that I

  1442. have heard

  1443. from my

  1444. father I

  1445. have made

  1446. known to

  1447. you.

  1448. Do you see

  1449. Jesus lets

  1450. us in?

  1451. He lets us

  1452. know his

  1453. business, not

  1454. just his

  1455. business but

  1456. he tells us

  1457. about the

  1458. father's

  1459. business as

  1460. well.

  1461. That he

  1462. never lets

  1463. us down,

  1464. even when it

  1465. cost him his

  1466. own life, he

  1467. willingly went

  1468. all the way

  1469. for us.

  1470. Jesus always

  1471. lets us in

  1472. and he

  1473. never lets

  1474. us down.

  1475. It's

  1476. remarkable as

  1477. friendship with

  1478. God lost at

  1479. the fall, only

  1480. seen twice in

  1481. the Old

  1482. Testament, is

  1483. now available

  1484. to you and

  1485. me through

  1486. Jesus Christ.

  1487. At the start

  1488. we said that

  1489. sin spoiled

  1490. relationship because

  1491. it focused us on

  1492. ourselves and

  1493. yet in Jesus

  1494. and his

  1495. sacrifice for

  1496. us we have

  1497. one who dies

  1498. for us to

  1499. disarm the

  1500. power of

  1501. sin and

  1502. self in

  1503. our lives and

  1504. liberates us

  1505. to be good

  1506. friends.

  1507. We have one

  1508. who gave up

  1509. his eternal

  1510. Trinitarian

  1511. friendship so

  1512. that our

  1513. friendship with

  1514. God and

  1515. others could

  1516. be restarted.

  1517. At the cross

  1518. the God's

  1519. head's friendship

  1520. was ruptured so

  1521. that our

  1522. friendship could

  1523. be repaired.

  1524. And his

  1525. wounds are

  1526. ultimately the

  1527. wounds of a

  1528. friend.

  1529. wounds that

  1530. he doesn't

  1531. afflict on

  1532. us but

  1533. wounds that

  1534. he takes

  1535. in our

  1536. place.

  1537. Crucified for

  1538. being friends

  1539. with the wrong

  1540. people, sinners

  1541. and tax

  1542. collectors, you

  1543. and me.

  1544. Jesus is a

  1545. wonderful friend.

  1546. He comes so

  1547. far to be

  1548. friends with you

  1549. and me.

  1550. It dissolves

  1551. this idea that

  1552. we can only be

  1553. friends with people

  1554. like us.

  1555. Jesus is not

  1556. like us at

  1557. all.

  1558. There's no

  1559. one less

  1560. like us.

  1561. And yet he

  1562. comes and he

  1563. befriends us.

  1564. The ultimate

  1565. friend who does

  1566. make us better

  1567. than ourselves.

  1568. Jesus is the

  1569. ultimate friend

  1570. who liberates us

  1571. to be a true

  1572. friend and pursue

  1573. true friendships.

  1574. Greater love

  1575. has no one

  1576. than this that

  1577. one lay down

  1578. his life for

  1579. his friends.

  1580. Than the

  1581. greatest friend

  1582. is the one

  1583. who laid down

  1584. the most

  1585. for his

  1586. friends.

  1587. Jesus is

  1588. the ultimate

  1589. friend, a

  1590. divine friend

  1591. better than

  1592. any other

  1593. friend.

  1594. The friend

  1595. who is always

  1596. there, promising

  1597. to be with us

  1598. to the very

  1599. end of the

  1600. age.

  1601. The friend

  1602. who is slow

  1603. to anger,

  1604. who is

  1605. thoughtful and

  1606. tender, who

  1607. is eternally

  1608. trustworthy, who

  1609. will never let

  1610. us down.

  1611. One who

  1612. shares our

  1613. pain, comforts

  1614. us in sorrow

  1615. and sympathizes

  1616. with us in

  1617. weakness.

  1618. He rescues us

  1619. from our great

  1620. trouble and

  1621. liberates us

  1622. to ripple

  1623. his friendship

  1624. of loving

  1625. us to death

  1626. out to

  1627. others.

  1628. He is the

  1629. ultimate friend

  1630. who is

  1631. constantly working

  1632. to make us

  1633. better than

  1634. ourselves and

  1635. from one

  1636. degree of

  1637. newness to

  1638. another.

  1639. It is right

  1640. to conclude

  1641. what a friend

  1642. we have in

  1643. Jesus.

  1644. All our sins

  1645. and griefs

  1646. to bear, what

  1647. a privilege to

  1648. carry everything

  1649. to God in

  1650. prayer.

  1651. Here's the

  1652. big lesson

  1653. of the day.

  1654. How can we

  1655. be better

  1656. friends?

  1657. By having

  1658. a deeper

  1659. friendship

  1660. with Jesus

  1661. Christ.

  1662. And as we

  1663. befriend him

  1664. closer, he

  1665. rubs off onto

  1666. us, which

  1667. enables us to

  1668. be the kind

  1669. of people that

  1670. others love and

  1671. benefit and

  1672. grow from being

  1673. friends with.

  1674. How do you

  1675. become a tree

  1676. friend?

  1677. Look at love

  1678. and imitate the

  1679. Lord Jesus who

  1680. is our ultimate

  1681. friend forever.

  1682. Let me pray.

  1683. Father God,

  1684. thank you that

  1685. you don't call

  1686. us servants.

  1687. Father, we

  1688. weren't even

  1689. worthy of that.

  1690. Father, but you

  1691. call us friends.

  1692. That in Jesus,

  1693. our ultimate

  1694. friend, the hope

  1695. of friendship, the

  1696. benefit of friendship,

  1697. the glory of

  1698. friendship with

  1699. you is possible.

  1700. And so our

  1701. prayer is that you

  1702. would make us

  1703. more like the

  1704. friends that Jesus

  1705. has been to us.

  1706. That we would be

  1707. friends that are

  1708. constant, friends

  1709. that are careful.

  1710. Father, friends that

  1711. are candid.

  1712. Friends that are

  1713. continuously encouraging

1714. each other to be more

  1715. like Jesus.

  1716. Father, we don't just

  1717. want to rub

  1718. shoulders.

  1719. Father, we don't

  1720. want to just stop

  1721. at fellowship and

  1722. think that that's

  1723. enough.

  1724. But Father, I pray

  1725. in our church we

  1726. would have deep and

  1727. rich and fruitful

  1728. and edifying

  1729. friendships that

  1730. would help us in

  1731. our journey of

  1732. faith pursuing your

  1733. son Jesus.

  1734. In whose name we

  1735. pray.

  1736. Amen.
